TWO DOUBLE PASSES UP FOR GRABS

It's Easter and traditionally the last chance to catch a bit of sunshine and beach activity before winter.

There's so much happening at The J these school holidays, so to celebrate Noosa Today is giving away a double pass to each of these two fantastic events. In Control, local elite dancers from the Neo Vida Dance Company will impress audiences with their soulful modern dance sequences as they explore what we do to take control (more in What's On). Or witness hilarious comedy, incredible circus stunts and tricks that are out of this world at the Comedy Circus Stunt Show. In this family friendly comedy show, stunt man Joel will climb inside a balloon, juggle chainsaws, squeeze through a toilet seat and ride a ginormous unicycle. The show will also feature mind blowing magic and a lie detecting chicken. For your chance to win a double pass, simply email your name, phone number, and which show you would like to see, to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 3. ●

The weather forecast is for a few showers but with any luck Noosa will work its magic to bring a little sunshine into the week or two ahead. These holidays will also be the last couple of weeks to walk the normal pathway along Park Road before work begins on the new boardwalk and the road is reduced to one lane, so make the most of it. There are plenty of school holiday activities organised around Noosa beaches and the hinterland. And while everyone is taking a

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

BATON PASSES TO HUGE APPLAUSE BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was a patriotic Noosa that filled the streets and Noosa Main Beach on Monday afternoon as the 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay travelled through the region. Residents and tourists lined the baton route waving flags and cheering as the baton bearers and cavalcade went past. There was a heavy police presence

but their friendly manner added to the celebratory atmosphere. When the baton reached Noosa Main Beach baton bearers Emma Snowsill and Jordan Mercer were joined by well wishes running alongside. The baton will now be heading toward the Gold Coast for the opening of the Commonwealth Games next Wednesday 4 April. ●

Crowds line the beach to see the baton go past.

GROUPS EXPAND IN SURF CLUB BATTLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Two weeks ago representatives from five Peregian community organisations met, agreeing to "work together to develop a community engagement strategy that will explore community expectations about the future of life saving at Peregian Beach". The meeting brought together Peregian Family and Friends Association (PFaFA), Peregian Beach's Community and Businesss Associations, Peregian Beach Community House and Peregian Springs Residents Association. On Saturday morning another newly formed group, Peregian Beach Surf Club inc, held its first committee meeting and sign on for lifesavers and nippers. The new group, which met at Peregian Beach Community House, has been set up by former Noosa Surf Club members. It aims to reopen Peregian's current clubhouse in September to provide lifesaving and a nippers program. The group's goal is to enlist 100 local lifesavers either through transfer from another lifesaving club or training and begin operation after obtaining Surf Life Saving Queensland accreditation. Club president and former Noosa SLSC deputy director of lifesaving Rob Neely

said community members had come out in droves with 27 signing up for the new nippers program. Just a block from where the group met on Saturday members of PFaFA set up a meet and greet stall at the Peregian Village market to sign on its own supporters and collect contributions towards the consultation process. PFaFA spokeswoman Leigh McCready said their aim was to inform the community on the group's progress and community consultation."PFaFA do not have a formal position on the future location, income streams or timeline for a fully operational surf club, we are waiting to hear what the community have to say prior to forming any official position on the way to move forward," she said. The group signed up 50 new members and have so far raised $5000 towards the consultation and aim to raise $10,000. A second consultation meeting is set down for 14 April to discuss which tools to use to best collect the views of the community. The Peregian Beach Surf Club group will be holding more sign-on days on 13 April with a BBQ in the Peregian Beach Village park and at the Peregian Beach Community House on 28 April. ●

COVER STORY Darryl Munck gets ready to test a Nauticycle. Photo: Rob Maccoll.

BLIND AMBITION BY MARGARET MACCOLL

H

ow many blind people in Noosa are riding bicycles, kayaking, rock wall climbing and even driving cars? If you said none you'd be wrong. A group of local vision impaired and blind people are changing public expectations of how blind people should behave and led by Darryl Munck are "getting out of the house" and "enjoying the outdoors". About six months ago and having struggled with depression Darryl became aware that he wasn't alone, that depression was a condition not uncommon amongst visionimpaired people, and research backed that up. A British study published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology found people with visual impairment were more likely to experience problems performing activities

which in turn leads to depression. It sparked in Darryl the idea to broaden his experiences and help people in his situation to do the same. "I thought how do we get to everyone," he said. So he went online. A Meet Ups website - Vision impaired Sunny Coasters, family, friends, supporters was established and within a few months a group formed who have since been exploring activities, including driving. "I had an idea to get vision impaired people accepted in the community," Darryl said. "A lot of people don't come across a blind person their whole life." "I got on to the small businesses and said how do you feel about a group of vision-impaired people coming along." Darryl' request has met with positive responses from local businesses and generally a single query. "Most just say how can we do it," he said.

Over the past few months Darryl and his group have been road testing various activities. "The first thing we did was double kayak with Kayak Noosa," he said. "Then I went to Abseil Noosa. "They were prepared to give us a go. "They also wanted to know, how can we do this? "Then I contacted Roadcraft Driver Training Centre and they said how can we do this." After trying it himself Darryl is working on getting a group together for a Vision Impaired (VIP) driving experience. "It was fantastic," he said. "It's a normal car. A driving instructor sits beside you. He has dual controls. You're on a track, not on a public road. He says a little bit left, a little bit right, slow down now, you're coming to a hill.

Free riding on the river. Working though the challenges that arise, whether it's accommodating mobility needs or using more auditory services were steps in the process. For Darryl living with vision impairment has been a lifelong experience. He grew up in a family with vision impairment. His mother, brother and sister were vision impaired and he was born with a hereditary illness, retinitis pigmentosa. When he was a boy he had tunnel vision which he describes as like looking through a pin hole. His reduced vision didn't prevent him having a regular childhood. "You just ran into a lot more things than other kids," he said. Darryl's condition is progressive and for the past 15 years he has been totally blind. It has meant he is frequently dependent on others, something that can be difficult to accept and requires a lot of trust. "I have to give over total trust," he said. "But I have to feel safe. If I don't trust someone I'll say no." For Darryl and many vision impaired people the dependence and difficulties result in them avoiding contact and getting stuck at home on their own and can put them on a path of mental health issues

Riding solo gives vision impaired locals a chance to ride alone. such as depression. It happened to Darryl but with the help of mental health service STEPS Group Australia he now regards himself as a person in recovery. He said STEPS had helped support and empower him to be more involved in the community and now Darryl is helping others. "I feel like I'm helping people, helping others to get out there and hopefully not go down the road I went down," he said.

Having accomplished a range of tasks to date they are searching for more adventures as they embrace life in their own way. "We just try things that blind people aren't supposed to - just enjoy the outdoors." On Tuesday 10 April a group of VIPs will be getting behind the wheel, some for the very first time, to embark on a driving experience at the Roadcraft Driver Training Centre. â—?

"It's like driving off into blackness." After some driving around the track they tried the short fast run. "It's done in a safe, controlled environment," he said. "We got up to 80-90km then slammed on the brakes. You could feel it skidding. "It gets the adrenalin flowing - you're doing something different. It's not in our comfort zone. "The instructor said he felt so good after it. It gave him a big kick to see the smiles on our faces." I caught up with five members of the group on Noosa River foreshore as they were about to give Nauticycles Noosa a try. They walked along the Noosa River foreshore with their white canes to guide them and someone to provide direction. Each was slightly apprehensive but determined to take to the river solo on the cycle-powered boats. On this occasion it was Nauticycles Noosa owner Marc Van der Vegt who initiated the experience. Marc had seen Darryl and his tandembicycle co-rider Phil stopping off at Sandbar coffee shop on Gympie Terrace and offered them a Nauticycle ride. "I thought this would be such a safe way for Darryl to have a go being in control of the bike for a change," Marc said. "Darryl came back a few weeks later and took me up on the offer, He loved it so much we thought we should offer this to some other people that Darryl knows in the same situation. "My interest in this is to give the cyclists an experience they will remember with a great sense of freedom." Once at Nauticycles the group folded their canes away and with a little guidance climbed on the bikes and rode off on the river. Each one was accompanied by a spotter who rode alongside to call out directions. Darryl and the group have a wider ambition to bring blind tourism to Noosa. "There's a hundred thousand of us in Australia and international companies organise holidays for vision impaired people," he said. "Noosa has so much to offer." Former councillor Russell Green is working with Darryl and the group as they explore tourist opportunities in Noosa. Russell now director of RG Strategic provides clients with expertise to navigate toward achieving their goals "There's potentially a good opportunity to provide tourist opportunities that are delivered in a different way," he said. Russell said to cater to the niche market it was a matter of determining how others needed to experience an activity.

IMMUNISATION RATES RISE Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network (PHN) has released immunisation rates for children which show a second consecutive rise in fully immunised children across every age group for 20162017. PHN chair Dr Peter Dobson said the number of children immunised had risen to 93.3 per cent, up from 91.6 per cent last year. Dr Dobson said that while this improvement is welcome, rates need to be as high as 95 per cent to provide community-wide protection. “In our region we are still seeing pockets of preventable diseases such as whooping cough and measles putting vulnerable members of our community at risk,” he said. ●

LIFESTYLE FOR TECH HEADS Noosa Council is hoping to lure tech workers and digital entrepreneurs to its Peregian Beach Digital Hub with the attraction of Noosa's enviable lifestyle, surfing beaches, popular national park, restaurants and cafes, closeness to the Sunshine Coast Airport and warm climate. The Hub is due to open in May and is calling for tenants such as technology entrepreneurs that are looking to employ local software developers, designers and other technologists. Digital Hub director Chris Boden, former Lonely Planet innovation head and founder of Create Noosa, said it was the lifestyle of Noosa that attracted he and his family from Silicon Valley in the US. Chris will be providing entrepreneurial support to tenants of the Hub which has as its brief to host mentoring and skills development programs to "help build Noosa's technology talent and foster a culture of collaboration and collegial support". Council officers said there had been a lot of interest in the hub and a high demand was expected for tenders for tenancies and registration. The building is designed to accommodate a mix of technology enterprises occupying their own private space as well as individual technologists or small teams wanting to co-work in a shared office space environment. The tender closes Tuesday 17 April. For more information visit www.peregianhub.com.au. â—?

HEALTH PLAN FOR AGEING NOOSA SHIRE Noosa Council aims to extend its role in the delivery of health services by setting up a reference group to design a Health and Wellbeing Plan for the shire. Council's public health responsibilities include licensing and inspecting food premises and managing disease-carrying pests such as mosquitoes, but through the plan it will be looking at other ways to effect health and wellbeing efforts and obtain state and federal government funding. The reference group is to be chaired by Councillor Ingrid Jackson and made up of state health department and agency representatives plus Council staff, academics and community groups who will draft the plan. "The reference group will assess how current national and state health strategies are meeting Noosa's needs and how we might either influence those strategies or plug any gaps," she said. "With a median age 10 years older than the state's, Noosa's health needs may differ considerably from those of other parts of Queensland." Council aims to establish the reference group next month and present a draft Health and Wellbeing Plan to the community for feedback in September. â—?

"We get down and dirty with a variety of activities each week," teacher Bec Kennett said. "We've made succulent planters wrapped in paper bark, natural teepees and so much more," she said. "Our team work together to provide a fun filled environmentally charged journey each week that families will remember way into the future." BIG THINGS FOLLOWER

VACCINE LETS COELIACS EAT GLUTEN

BY MARGARET MACCOLL

The idea of researching oversized kitsch like The Big Pineapple started out as a joke for Dr Amy Clarke but the topic quickly grabbed attention and has become a serious research project for the University of the Sunshine Coast historian. Her research has uncovered more than 500 Big Things built across Australia and Queensland leads the way with 155, proudly beating NSW with 149. Surprisingly, these objects which Amy first thought to be products of the 1970s and 1980s when their popularity peaked first appeared in the 1950s and are still being built today. There have been 13 constructed in Queensland in the 1910s. But researching the objects had become problematic with little official information available as many of the big things were built "on the sly" almost as weekend projects without council approval. "Normally with architecture you have names of the builder and plans lodged with council," she said. Some have been purpose built to attract tourist attention and others, including the Big Pelican on the Noosa River foreshore had former uses such as parade floats. Amy last week told Noosa U3A guests how much communities treasured their big things. Despite many of them being made of flimsy construction suggestions over the years to demolish deteriorating items have

Dr Amy Clarke talks to U3A Noosa about Big Things. been met with public outcry, she said. When the Big Pineapple at Woombye came under threat a few years ago community demand led to the tourist attraction being heritage-listed by the state government

The research has raised many questions about the character of communities, the value of heritage items and how to define a big thing. Amy plans to compile her research into a book to appeal to all readers. ●

USC's Clinical Trials Centre last Friday launched a clinical trial of a new vaccine that aims to switching off the immune response to gluten for coeliac disease sufferers. Coeliac disease is a serious chronic medical condition in which the ingestion of gluten, even in small amounts, leads to an immune response that causes damage to the small intestine. Currently, the only way to manage the disease is by the strict avoidance of gluten in the diet. USC's Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said the investigational vaccine would be given to adult trial participants as an injection twice a week for seven weeks. He said the trial would be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr James Daveson. Dr Daveson said a gluten-free diet was exceptionally demanding for patients, expensive and difficult to maintain as gluten was used extensively in modern food production. He said the vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance in coeliac disease sufferers. For more information visit www.joinourtrials.com or phone 5456 3797. ●

There are a lot of incredible bars on the Sunshine Coast and that's what I love about the region as a whole, as long as you have passion and belief in your brand and product then I think people resonate with that. All the businesses on the coast have their unique point of difference and we recommend people just come and give us a try.

What was your first job? My job background is in design, branding and creating the feel of a product. The fact that our product is beer, makes it all the more fun. What is your favourite dish at the moment? We are known for our famous ribs, they are slow cooked in our in house BBQ Sauce then flash fried in seasoned flour and Dressed in sticky sauce to serve, comes with our ranch. THE BOLTON REPORT

SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP

BULLYING - IT’S A HOT TOPIC ALL AROUND Earlier this month we celebrated the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. However, I feel it appropriate we start to tackle an aspect of bullying that for too long has not been spoken about, adult bullying. In my Maiden Speech last month in Parliament I spoke of the need for bickering and poor behaviour in the political realm to stop. As politicians, we need to lead. How can we expect our school children to stop bullying behaviour, when the lead-by-example is not evident? I also followed this up with a Question on Notice to the Premier last week, asking Ms Palaszczuk, to advise of the learnings and initiatives that are available to improve productivity and behaviour in the Chamber. In the last month alone I have seen multiple examples on Facebook and elsewhere with targeting of individuals and organisations in the name of ‘advocating’ and/or ‘public information’. Regardless of the label, when you name names, it’s bullying. It impacts our people and our community through creating divisions, the loss of collaboration and solution building. One of our greatest assets in Noosa are those that selflessly give of their time - our volunteers. Working towards a resolution through credible lobbying and negotiations, as well offering solutions, is always the favourable course of action. It’s pleasing to see Local Government supporting initiatives regarding cyber bullying, and the realm of appropriate discourse on and off line with the hashtag #pledgenot2sledge. The Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying

Sandy Bolton. Taskforce held its first meeting last week and submissions are now open at www.qld.gov.au/ cyberbullyingtaskforce and close June 1, 2018. Between Local and State leaders taking a stand together, with the help of communities, we can make an enormous difference to this scourge. Recently I was asked why as an MP I do not takes ‘sides’ on issues. This is very simple. I was elected to represent the Noosa community in state issues in Parliament. Making comment

on local and Federal government issues, saying what I do or do not support, or taking a personal stance forward as a community stance is inappropriate, divisive and not conducive to good outcomes. We live in a community with many diverse perspective and perceptions. These should be embraced, as that is both interesting and ensures that we move forward in a creative and innovative space to source solutions.

Good informed discussion is productive and fruitful. Communication, collaboration and respect for diversity of thought is our way forward and will demonstrate that Noosa is a leader in the most important of ways - maintaining the culture needed for us to achieve in our collective and individual endeavours, and set a wonderful example to next generation. #togetherwecan ●

SUPPORTER CLUB WINS THROUGH and our involvement and support for community organizations will definitely continue," said club Manager Anton Mogg. The success of the recent Beach Party of the Year, held on Noosas Main Beach was a great indication of what can be achieved within our community when organisations such as the Noosa Festival of Surf and the Surf Club combine their resources for the benefit others. At the Annual Clubs Queensland black tie dinner held to recognize outstanding achievements by clubs throughout Queensland, the Noosa Surf Club, the support arm of Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving came home with one of the major awards of the evening, The Best Club on the Sunshine Coast. In Brisbane's Centennial Hall where the function was attended by some one thousand guests, the atmosphere was electric. Their attendance gave a broad representation to all aspects of club life; and above all the opportunity to publically recognize the hard work and dedication that goes into the successful running of these clubs. Board of Directors Chairman for the Noosa Club Ian Young said, "The award was well received and is a great achievement. Led by club manager Anton Mogg and ably supported by assistant manager Les Evans and staff, it goes to show that our support of not only our local lifesaving club but other organisations within our community has been acknowledged. So on behalf of our board many thanks to Moggie, our staff and our supporters." ''With renovations about to commence we will be looking to another great year

BRING BACK SKIPPY I am well aware it takes all kinds to make the world go round but it doesn’t seem that long ago when we were content with seeing paid actors and actresses at the movies and on TV playing deceitful, abusive and disrespectful bullies. Some were so good at it the public in certain cases never forgave these villains, but then there were those who voted for them to receive awards because of their talents and acting ability. It didn’t take long for the TV moguls to realise they could create reality shows where there was plenty of contestants only too willing to show millions of viewers they could fill those categories by just being themselves. The TV screens are now filled daily with promotional snippets of these contestants proudly showing their distasteful characters just to entice viewers to sit through the evening watching and waiting to again see what has been already shown during the day. And some perhaps for weeks in advance. I doubt if there are many viewers who take much notice of the adverts put on by the companies who are paying for this type of show. We are not forced to watch the shows but along with young who are easily influenced have to put up with these daily promotions put on at every opportunity from dawn to dusk. Changing channels only gives you the same from a rival station but with a different format. Don’t be surprised if we see a bit of “how’s your father“ at the Commonwealth Games. Where are you Skippy? DIETARY EVIDENCE I write to respond to the epistle from the parallel universe of veganism. Am I to assume that the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition does not exist there? Your correspondent asked for credible evidence that a vegan lifestyle is unhealthy. This can be found in the aforementioned journal. For example, in relation to micronutrients; Vitamin D in preschool children, was one eighth of the recommended daily intake, serum alkaline phosphatase values were elevated, mild iron deficiency existed in a quarter of the subjects, and serum cholesterol an important nutrient in cell membrane formation was low. These findings, and there are more, indicated that careful planning is required for vegan diets in children. This is not a fanciful statement! At the other end of life osteoporosis is a common chronic condition associated with progressive loss of bone mineral density

The longer they lived on the river and through newer generations they would have learnt the importance of having a minimal impact on the natural resources to make sure the resource was plentiful into the future - as evidenced by Mr Clarey's stories about the development of the beam trawlers' nets and systems over the years. Something the original inhabitants of our beautiful river knew only too well, having cared for and thrived in for thousands of years. The white man’s impact in less than 200 years is pitiful in comparison. It is one of the reasons there is a “bring back the fish project" in the first place and which has caused all this hullabaloo. While Mr Clarey is demanding an apology on behalf of his family and those of the original fishing families from Mr Gloster maybe he could man up himself and publicly apologise to what is left of our local Indigenous community on behalf of those pioneering families. That would truly show character and maybe then he might get the apology he deserves from Mr Gloster and the respect from the wider local community not just from those with an axe to grind. Andrew Anderson Noosaville

LENSCAPE

Feeding time at the water’s edge. Andrew McCarthy captured this picture of pelicans hoping for a for a morsel. Have you snapped a great shot? Send it to us at newsdesk@noosatoday.com. au and it might be featured as our next Lenscape. (BMD) and compromised bone strength, with increasing risk of fracture over time. Vegetarian diets have been shown to contain lower amounts of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B-12, protein, and n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids, all of which have important roles in maintaining bone health. With an ageing population this is a concern and is likely to become a costly tsunami. Sarcopenia (muscle wasting in the aged) a further complication of low protein intake and ageing adds to my concerns. Other scientific journals, eg Global Food Security Vol 14, 2017 challenge the contribution of grass-fed cattle to global warming and indicate that they are in fact a carbon sink. I am happy that individuals, such as your correspondent, are committed vegans. My commitment is to responsible animal management, access to grass-fed meat, grown locally and the reopening of an ethical meat processing plant at a local facility. The 2020 Dietary Guideline, developed by the US department of Agriculture is now calling for scientific input, not before time. You only have to look around you to see the disastrous outcomes evident in the obesity epidemic and the escalating rates of cancer, all nutrition based. This has been a concern to the US Congress. And yes, they do affect us as we adopt them for use in Australia. Vanessa Gregory Noosa

LOSS OF BECKER HELICOPTERS I have to say I am in agreement with others who have written in about the loss of Becker Helicotpers due to noise complaints by a few. Dr Spence states in his letter that noise pollution can cause various health problems e.g. stress, depression, hearing loss. Whereas I fully agree with him on that account, I wonder what he would do if he lived, as I do, in an area inhabited by varying numbers of flying foxes (up to half a million), who were not here when we purchased our property. Not only do they screech all day, and then return early in the morning waking us up, there is

Thursday, 29 March, 2018

constant pollution associated with the mess and smell. When the bats are at their worst we can be inside with the windows closed and the TV on and we can still hear them, so that our mayor suggested we might get double glazing! We cannot just say “your lease is up and not being renewed - move on”. We have helicopters flying over to the hospital, and personally I would prefer the noise of helicopters - at least we know they will soon pass. Norah Lilley Tewantin

APOLOGY CALL TO FIRST NATIONS So Mr Clarey put his petition to council to try to highlight that his relatives and colleagues, local prawn trawlers, were not responsible for the destruction of the local oyster reefs. The real issue here is one of pedantry and personal affront. Mr Clarey has taken umbrage at Mr Gloster publicly stating that the prawn trawlers were one of the causes of the destruction of the oyster reefs. The petition was about demanding an apology for this specific issue, which anyone with a passing interest in this issue could easily see that Mr Gloster was incorrect. In relation to the prawn trawlers ONLY. Mr Clarey hasn’t done himself any justice by not acknowledging the fishing industry's role in depleting the natural fish stocks and destruction of the oyster reefs all those years ago. This is made very clear in Dr Thurston’s report that exploitation of the fish stocks has occurred for well over a century. For people now to be mentioning the pioneering fishing families as conservationists is laughable. No-one is suggesting that these original settlers and fishing families were not incredibly hard-working and resourceful. But just like the early timber cutters they completely plundered the natural resources around them, not to mention the abhorrent treatment of the local Indigenous population. Conservation and sustainability would not have been concepts they understood, nor words in their vocabularies.

CHAIRLIFT TO OVERCOME TRAFFIC I visualised a potential solution to our traffic congestion in the Hastings Street region and would like to put it out there for others to comment on. As we blindlessly continue to promote Noosa, the matter will only worsen. Council needs to find the balance to allowing developing estates/events and charging those developers for infrastructure growth to accommodate it. One house can introduce six cars into the area. One global event can introduce 6000. We seem to be focused on solutions via the road system which, once implemented, if it fails we still have traffic jams. Whether we go the concept of buses, paid parking, multistorey car parks, our problem still resides with cars. Why not lift our heads up and seek a solution via the air? We can’t go underground due to the water table but we can place a chairlift to convey pedestrians from their cars into the area. This gives more car space for hotel guests, freight, resident owners and emergency vehicles. By developing a three level car park in the Noosa Junction already existing council car park, from this ride-on point, tourists, surfers, shoppers and staff can be conveyed into the area, leaving their cars at the Junction. In turn Noosa Junction traders seek more activity in the area and this ‘get on point’ would encourage that. The chairlift could convey passengers from the Junction over Noosa Hill and down into Hastings street shouldering the Lions Park where their ‘lay down’ point meets the bus depot or a station in the current Lions Park Car Bay. When an international student comes to stay with me the first place of introduction is the Bay. As we drive through the Junction I take them up over the hill and it’s at that Reef Hotel point you hear them gasp at the beautiful vista ahead. Visitors choose Noosa Bay as it’s safer than our ocean beaches to swim in. Ratepayers could receive a specified yearly ticket and the concept could be automated, requiring little staff just regular maintenance. It’s a complementary, clean manner oif transporting people through our area without the damage of car pollution. Jen Oakley Noosaville noosatoday.com.au

NEW LANDMARK PRESENCE THERE is a new player on the block in Noosa Junction, and they have lifted the bar on the on local building standards. Formerly based in Sunshine Beach, Aspire Property Management’s new headquarters is now at 10 Sunshine Beach Road, Noosa Junction, on the old Westpac building site. The site has been totally reconstructed, with extensive renovations inside and out. The Aspire Building, designed by architect Andrew Bock and build by St Andrews Constructions, incorporates generous use of glazing and natural timbers. The result is a fresh, contemporary design that raises the bar on building standards in Noosa Junction. Owner Dave Langdon from Aspire said the previous building design had some issues, particularly in relation to an awkward ramp-way entry that was removed as it limited optimal street frontage. “Sunshine Beach Road provides us with such a high-profile location and street exposure; we are already getting a lot more interest in our property management services,” Mr Langdon said. “By backing our vision and investing properly in good design we wanted to show what is possible. “The days of Noosa Junction being a semi-forgotten second cousin to Hastings Street are now officially over.” The building will house Aspire Property Management as its anchor tenant, with the major benefit for clients and suppliers being off-street parking underneath the building. Other tenants include Global Journeys online travel agency, relocating from Noosaville and existing long-term tenants on the second level, Noosa Yoga Centre, OD on Movement Performance Centre and Noosa Tutoring Centre.

FARMING LAND VALUES JUMP

Aspire Property Management's new headquarters are at Noosa Junction. According to Aspire Holidays manager, Michal Svoboda, the move to Noosa Junction has been a good one for Aspire. “While our office at Sunshine Beach served us well, our new office has much better exposure and access and a more central position for our owners, guests and tenants,” he said. “We are getting a lot of walk-ins and the new-look building is generating a lot of buzz around town which is great to see. “We are very confident that our office move will be a positive step forward as

we continue to service the needs of our clients.” Aspire specialises in holiday, residential and commercial property management and are the quiet achievers on the block, quietly growing a portfolio over the past seven years that equals other well-known agencies in town. The new-look Aspire Building is a fresh addition to Noosa’s architectural streetscape and a statement of architectural excellence in Noosa Junction.

THE value of rural primary production land on the Sunshine Coast has jumped by more than 30 per cent in the past two years. Newly-released land valuations showed significant increases rural land values in various parts of Queensland. Properties in the Maranoa in the state’s south west increased in value by 59.6 per cent while in Far North Queensland’s Douglas values increase by 47 per cent. Queensland Valuer-General, Neil Bray, said the new land valuations echoed the spur in economic activity and a continued level of optimism that surrounded rural land markets during 2017. “This increase in rural land values can be attributed to the continued effects of strengthened beef prices and low interest rates, which have generally resulted in increases in Queensland’s rural property markets,” Mr Bray said. “Increases in rural values have generally occurred throughout the majority of areas revalued in 2018. “There were significant increases in rural land sales across Maranoa, Goondiwindi and Sunshine Coast, Murweh and Douglas shires.” No change in land value was made in the Fraser Coast and Gladstone council areas, and values in Bulloo and Paroo in south-west Queensland increased by just 2.7 and 3.5 per cent respectively. ●

ON THE COVER

LOCAL TALENTS CREATE UNIQUE LIFESTYLE HOW do you create a stunning suite of homes inspired by the beauty of its unique site in Noosa? You commission the best local architects and designers to bring their unique vision to the master-planned project. Two of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa’s most experienced and awarded architectural firms, along with a leading interior designer, have combined their collective experience to create Parkridge Noosa. The design brief was to create a prestigious modern-living destination, reflecting the Noosa lifestyle and the breath-taking natural surroundings, Maroochydore’s Blackburne Jackson director Rohan Jackson said. “We wanted to create a relationship between building elements and the site environs which would be reinforced through a selection of natural textures and finishes,” he said. “Ultimately we’ve tried to capture the outstanding natural elements that make the location so special. “For example the Lake Weyba view will be constantly changing in response to weather conditions and the moon patterns, there’s also the long-distance views to the hinterland, the fauna sounds of the national park as well as the setting sun which marks the close of the day as shadows lengthen and light fades. “The sloping nature of the site’s topography has enabled our architects to distribute the different apartment stock in a tiered or levelled fashion that

LOCAL VISION: Rohan Jackson, Brooke Marsh and Dan Sparks are the faces behind Parkridge Noosa's architecture and design. enables commanding views to the lake to be captured from most parts of the development.” From high-level inclusions within apartments, to the recreational facilities, open spaces and cafe and the prominent landscape spaces that tie the entire precinct to the park surroundings, Mr Jackson said the architectural design answered modern lifestyle expectations. Parkridge is set among outstanding natural beauty, including the pristine white sands of Lake Weyba that inspired interior design concepts. “The aesthetic is quintessentially Noosa,” interior designer Brooke Marsh said.

“We pay homage to Noosa’s light, bright, balmy days and its relaxed energy. “This coupled with the close proximity to Noosa’s beaches led us to a relaxed yet elegant, beachy interior of soft greys, whites, light timbers and stone textures. “The use of stone, timber and warm greys against a classic white backdrop result in elegant spaces that acknowledge the site surrounds while providing a clean base to which residents can add their own personal touch.” Peregian Beach-based architect Dan Sparks, responsible for the design of the Parkridge villas, was inspired by the organic forms, textures and colours of ‘found objects’ within a coastal

environment such as sea shells, driftwood and pebbles. “They (the villas) also pay a respectful nod to traditional beach house vernacular with their simple skillion roofs and fibre cement cladding - albeit in a more refined way,” he said. “This philosophy is embraced for both exterior and interior elements of the design and results in a sophisticated yet casual and undeniable coast aesthetic and ambience.” See the vision for yourself at the Parkridge Noosa display suite, which is open from 10am to 2pm daily. RATES STING IN PROPERTY PRICE JUMP? BY TESSA MAPSTONE What is your land value? THE new land valuation data can be access online at qld.gov.au/ landvaluation, along with a new online tool helping landowners better understand their valuation and local property market. The valuation list can also be viewed at Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy business centres and local government offices during normal business hours until 5 June. Landowners who believe their valuation is incorrect can lodge an objection online, via post at the address shown at the top of their valuation, or by phoning 1300 664 217 for an information kit. Objection notices must be submitted by 8 May. ●

service provision and to ensure Council financial sustainability. “The differential rating structure used to levy general rates regulates property valuation increases.” Mr Shave said differential general rating used by local government was not a perfect science, but was structured as equitably as possible for rate-payers. “Usually with property valuation changes there are winners and losers within each rating category, and council always looks to minimise impacts where

possible,” Mr Shave said. Landowners in the Sunshine Coast Council area will find out how their increased land values (up by 10.4 per cent for median price across the shire) in July when the first rates notices for the 2018/19 financial year will be issued. A spokesperson for Sunshine Coast Council said the majority of ratepayers pay the minimum general rate, and their rates category would not change as a result of the revised valuations. ●

NOOSA’S land valuations have jumped by more than 11 per cent in two years, but ratepayers will have to wait until the new financial year to see what impact it will have on their rates bill. Queensland’s Valuer-General Neil Bray recently released the 2018 land valuations, in which he described a 13.7 per cent average rise in median land value across the shire as a minor increase. “Residential values have risen in all coastal and hinterland centres, while some commercial and industrial lands increased, and the rural residential and primary production markets increased, reflecting the demand for hinterland properties,” Mr Bray said. “Some localities, such as Peregian Beach and Castaways Beach, reflected moderate increases in median values due to the demand for well-located coastal properties with the median value of residential land in Peregian Beach rising from $295,000 to $340,000.” That’s a 15.3 per cent jump, the highest in the Noosa council area. Statutory land valuations are used to establish council rates, state land and rental tax. Noosa Council Corporate Services director Michael Shave said council staff would use the new valuations to conduct rates modelling, determining new rate-inthe-dollar and minimum general rate levels for each category. “For approximately 70 per cent of Noosa properties on the minimum general rate, property valuation increases won’t result in an automatic rate increase,” Mr Shave said. “Council determines what overall rate increase is required each year during the budget process based on the cost of

TASSIE WILL ROCK YOU BY TESSA MAPSTONE

IT IS not the tallest mountain in the world, nor even the tallest in Australia, but fewer people get to the summit of Tasmania's Federation Peak than the summit of Mt Everest. Yet an intrepid team set out to summit the peak - described by Sir Edmund Hillary as "Australia's only real mountain" - during the wettest winter on record. "Occasionally an idea comes to you, and you have no choice but to pursue it," one-time city-slicker, now Tassie mountain guide and filmmaker, Andy Szollosi said. "It refuses to disappear. "No matter how terrifying, irrational or ludicrous it may seem - there is nothing for it, but to begin." That is just what he, along with climbers Mark Savage and Mick Wright and film team Simon Bischoff, Dan Haley and Olivia Page, did. The plan was to ascend the most aesthetic line on Federation Peak. For most rock climbers, there are enough deterrents about this route to rule out a summer ascent, when conditions are relatively favourable. The rock is loose, gear placements are limited, the route description is vague and the tough alpine vegetation that hangs onto the rock face with death defying resilience creates a whole new set of problems for the climber to negotiate. To attempt to scale Federation Peak in winter, when the storms of Tasmania's notorious south west blow in with full force, and the rock face is saturated (or frozen),

may appear purely idiotic. Yet, for this team of misfits, this trip was the adventure of a lifetime. Mark Savage had already attempted the route in winter 24 years previously. In 1992, as a young man with much confidence and perhaps not so much experience, he went out to Federation Peak with the idea of climbing Blade Ridge, and failed miserably. Perhaps it was this experience that led him to predict a "less than 1% chance of successfully climbing the Blade". Winter on the Blade is one of six inspiring adventure films screening at The J on April 20 when the world's most prestigious mountain film festival - the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour comes to town. It promises to be a night of short stories that prove life is what you make it, festival director Jemima Robinson said. "These films prove there is still a lot of space on our big planet for new expeditions, unclimbed peaks, unknown destinations, and true adventure," she said. "We all carry crazy dreams of walking, riding, or skiing across the world; this festival lets us meet the people who make theirs happen." Whether cycling across 43 countries paddling a hand-made canoe down the Ecuadorian Amazon, or climbing Tasmania's notorious Federation Peak in winter - Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour stories are chosen to celebrate more than outdoor exploration. They also celebrate the characterbuilding that adventure inevitably sparks: inner explorations of mateship, trust, and how we value one another and our world. Banff Mountain Film Festival will have you will be planning your next adventure before the credits roll. 2018 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour screens at The J on April 20, 7pm. LISTEN You will remember The Fratellis for their 2006 debut album, Costello Music, with loveable tunes like Chelsea Dagger and Flathead. Now, two-and-a-half years after releasing Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied in 2016, The Fratellis are back. In Your Own Sweet Time has been called the labelled the band's most enjoyable release since Costello Music. The ruckussy anthems have bene somewhat tideied up into a cleaner, jangly sound, but there's still plenty of the playful, boyish ' 70s rock swagger that put them on the map. The opening single Stand Up Tragedy brims with Jon Fratelli's raspy pipes, fuzzy guitars and pop-rock attitude, Sugartown is laden with innuendo and I've Been Blind's downshift in pace then crashing chorus. ●

Call of the Reed Warbler by Charles Massey

Peter Rabbit Starring: Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, Sam Neill

This is an important book. The wellqualified author points out the relatively recent degradation of the world's agricultural and grazing lands - especially those of Australia - leading towards a planet which will no longer be able to sustain us. We have lost native grasses, trees and plant species that maintained a healthy biodiversity underground. Artificial fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, tree clearing, and water mismanagement not only lead to loss of top soil and to salinity, but also to dangerous chemicals entering our food chain. Many examples are given as to how this process can be reversed. Reviewed by Jenny Carter, Friends of the Noosa Library. ●

Once upon a time there was a beautiful set of books written a very long time ago and featuring beautiful paintings of woodland creatures - it was sweet and lyrical and lovely. While the paintings are still there (thanks to artist Bea - Rose Byrne who lives next to McGregor’s farm), this Peter Rabbit is wisecracking, contemporary, irreverent, mostly funny and not quite as charming as it could have been. The animals are cute and there’s plenty of music and giggles to keep the young kids entertained. ●

WORLD OF NARNIA COMES CLOSER "They open a door and enter a world." Let Little Seed Theatre Company take you on a journey with its latest production, Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, at the Majestic Theatre on Easter Saturday. This is the first time that the company has toured a show and the team is excited to perform at The Majestic. "The opportunity to work within the classic theatre space and the people of the Hinterland is something to be cherished," director Johanna Wallace said. A heroic tale of love, faith and the triumph of good over evil, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has enthralled people of all ages since C.S. Lewis published the fantasy novel in 1950. Little Seed's dramatisation shares the story of the four Pevensie children, who discover a magical portal to the mythical land of Narnia. Expect talking animals, mythical crea-

tures, a white witch, and a cast of talented young performers supported by live and locally-composed music. A 13-member orchestra has worked tirelessly over the past few months to create a score that adds to the mood, works with the actors and enhances the story. The score complements the dazzling array of characters - the great lion Aslan is accompanied by strings and brass, while Mr Tumnus, the faun, is followed by the sound of panpipes. Two handmade bamboo flutes, made by Pomona's Windelf, are on loan to add an extra atmospheric touch. Little Seed Theatre Company presents Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at The Majestic Theatre Noosa. Saturday March 31 J performances at 2pm and 6.30pm. KNOWLEDGE OF NUTRITION Celebrity chef and My Kitchen Rules judge Colin Fassnidge has served up his realworld knowledge to nutrition students at the University of the Sunshine Coast ahead of his Noosa visit in May. Fassinage, who owns Sydney gastro pub Banksia Bistro, will be a guest at the Noosa Food and Wine Festival, took questions on how chefs and nutritionists could work more cooperatively to create healthier menus. He joined the class of about 10 USC students by Skype, his face displayed on a huge interactive screen in the university's Collaboration Studio. USC academic and nutritionist Tara Leong, who runs the new Food, Nutrition and Menu Design course, which is run outside of standard semesters, would help students find work as consultants to develop new food products, or work with chefs to redesign restaurant menus to focus on more nutritional foods. "Colin was actually able to inspire students by telling them about the huge role they could play in the food industry," she said. "He believes more nutritionists need to work alongside chefs to advise the industry on how to cater for food allergies and intolerances. "Currently, a lot of the time, chefs do that themselves without the knowledge." Ms Leong said the Food, Nutrition and Menu Design subject took a holistic approach to nutrition, even teaching students about food writing, photography

and how to create environmentally sustainable menus. "It teaches them how to pull everything together in a practical way," Ms Leong said. "They're literally in a commercial kitchen at the university cooking almost every day of the course, so it's really hands on." Ms Leong said the subject, which is run outside of standard semesters, would help students find work as consultants to develop new food products, or work with chefs to redesign restaurant menus to focus on more nutritional foods. â—?

RISK ISN’T SWEET New research from Cancer Council Victoria and University of Melbourne has revealed that regardless of body size, drinking sugary soft drinks can increase cancer risk. According to the study, published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, people who regularly drank sugary soft drinks were found to be more at-risk of several types of cancer than those who didn’t. A regular 600ml bottle of soft drink contains no nutritional benefits, but about 16 teaspoons of sugar, and drinking one can of sugary drink a day can lead to 6.5kgs of weight gain in a year. To find out if the drinks you are consuming are bad for your health refer to the amount of sugar on the nutrition panel and consider the size of the bottle as well. ●

The average soft drink can contain 16 teaspoons of sugar.

SPORTS & REMEDIAL MASSAGE Clint Smith has been a remedial / sports massage therapist in Noosa for over 20 years. He has worked with the Aust. Wallabies Rugby Union team, Olympic swimmers, and Tri-Athletes, Ironmen and women, and, more recently the Paralympic swimmers based at the Uni of the Sunshine coast in Sippy Downs. Clint blends a holistic approach to all of his clients, whether sports people or tired office workers or anyone for that matter who’s physical body is out of balance. Deep tissue therapy, myo-fascial release and acupressure / trigger point therapy are all combined with various relaxation techniques to relieve tight neck/shoulders, and/or painful lower/ back /hips legs. Adding to his treatments, Clint has incorporated a multi-direction vibration plate to his business, similar to those used within the NRL for injury rehab, for improving muscle/soft tissue elasticity and/or strength/cardio workouts. Sessions can be combined with massage or based on a weekly regime, tailored to the individuals circumstances and fitness levels. A twenty minute session is equivalent to a one hour gym workout!

C

NASA and the soviet union first created these “vibration plate” machines to help, restore and maintain health and fitness for astronauts whilst in space travels, due to massive physical challenges. They have been adapted in the last few decades for the health and fitness industry. Clint has a home-based clinic in Noosaville and also works at sports physiotherapy in Lanyana Way, Noosa junction. Mobile massage sessions are also available.

Among the general classification swimmers, Rob Jolly was outstanding, dominating his age group with ten gold medals. Rob also joined Lois Hill, Brian Hoepper and Jo Matthews in breaking the Queensland state record in the 4x50 Medley Relay. LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Simon Anderson paddles out for a legends exhibition on opening day at the 2017 NFOS.

MAKING SURF SENSE While we were at First Point conducting one of the most successful events in the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing's long history, Noosa Council was debating whether we - and other major tourism events - should be allowed to be there, apparently in response to increasing community and visitor pressure. As co-founder of Noosa's (and the world's) biggest surfing event I am well aware that you can't please all of the people all of the time. At various times over the past quarter of a century, recreational surfers have spoken quite clearly about perceived infringements on their liberty to surf wherever and whenever they like. However, we have worked long and hard to create an inclusive community environment, while pointing out that the "eight days of pure stoke" represents only two percent of the total surfing time available to them, and the results have been largely positive. The current policy argument is somewhat different, centering on use of the sand rather than the surf, and how much of a good thing is too much? The catalyst for this debate is the increasing use of marquees on Main Beach for entertainment, including live music, which apparently annoys the hell out of visitors who are trying to relax and pretend there is no event taking place in front of them. While I sympathize with them to a degree, it's a bit like going to New Orleans for a quiet weekend. Maybe it's the hoteliers' duty of care to ensure that people are made aware of Noosa's events calendar when they book - just sayin'. But also it's worth noting that during the surf festival, for example, many beachfront and beachside accommodations are filled with people who have come from around the world to attend said festival, even if they are incognito in ironed tee shirts and better quality thongs than the rest of us. That said, I have my own concerns about the preponderance of beach bars and entertainment stages, but more from a destination marketing perspective. When every event has the same look and feel, each begins to lose its point of difference, and that process has already begun to happen. 12352455-LB20-17

than I do, from the PLB website: "Fifth morning I went for an early surf at Sunset with (surf entrepreneur) Randy Rarick. It wasn't big, but big enough, and too good for me as it turned out. I wasn't feeling great, short of breath paddling, and just out of sorts. Randy called me onto one that stood up in just the right spot for me. Longest drop I've had in quite a while, got a couple of turns in but I knew I just had to get out of there, so surfed it as far as I could straight in over Val's Reef. I got up on the sand, crazy dizzy and spinning, sat down on a rock wall, lay down and died. "Sharon and great friend and North Shore local John Wade were watching from about 80 metres away. They began walking towards me, and then running when I didn't respond to calls. Short version, Sharon and John gave me frantic, amateur CPR and bought me back from the other side. Then the lifeguards arrived, firemen, ambulance, and through three hospitals I went over the next two weeks." A bypass and a new calf 's valve later, JB is back home on the Gold Coast recovering, slowly but surely. Thanks to a wife and a mate who both deserve medals, JB dodged two bullets - dying on the sand at Sunset and losing a house to pay the American private health system. Too close, buddy. I know JB's many Noosa friends will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery. ●

Always a strong competitor at the festival, Jack Norton surfed beautifully throughout the week. Photo Ian Borland/NFOS. In my opinion, Mayor Tony Wellington's proposal to restrict Main Beach East (in front of the surf club) to events that actually involve ocean sports, while over time creating a cultural events zone at West Beach and the Woods was a good one - let's not forget that it's bloody beautiful down there with better parking - but it got rolled by a single vote at Council, so the general thrust of the beach events policy for now is to accept the status quo while placing restrictions on all seven events. We don't know what that means yet, but it doesn't sound good. It's worth noting that Tourism Noosa's long-term policy of support for major events has made a major difference in evening out the peaks and valleys of our local economy while underlining Noosa's amenity as a year-round tourist destination. The vast majority of Noosa's population came to live here because it was a tourist destination (my own family included, almost 30 years ago)

so the NIMBY response is a bit rich coming from us. And finally (he says, dismounting his soapbox), it's worth remembering that even with seven major events taking place on Main Beach, it remains event-free 93 percent of the year. JB back from the other side Our great mate John Brasen was sorely in need of a holiday, after years of running a ma and pa publishing operation 24/7 in a tough market, so I was stoked when he told me that he and wife Sharon were switching off their phones and going to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. He'd be back in time for the surf festival (which he and John Lee helped me create) to cheer on the Pacific Longboarder Magazine juniors. Over and out. Less than a week later I received a text from JB, laid up in a Honolulu hospital awaiting open heart surgery. I've been sitting on the story ever since, but he tells it better

SUNSHINE BEACH PLANS FOR THE FUTURE There can be no doubt about it. The Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club, now in its 38th year of service to the community, is definitely in a progressive and positive state of mind. As things stand February 2019 should see the first sod of earth turned heralding the commencement of the building of what will be the new Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Club spokesperson Michelle Smallman said, ''Approval from council has been ratified and a project manager has been appointed. Present indications are that all designs will be available for public viewing by May. This will be a multi-million dollar project with the end result being an ultramodern club that will cater for all aspects of surf club life: while at the same time always being respectful of the environment.'' At Sunshine we have what is termed an open beach, that is a beach that is totally exposed to the elements and not protected by points such as we have at Noosa; this can leave it somewhat dangerous to the general public. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that a surf club on such a beach be capable of fulfilling its obligations as a white water rescue organization. By this we mean fully trained and fit patrol members backed up by the stateof-the-art rescue craft and patrol vehicles, including ATVs. (All Terrain Vehicles.) The latter is an essential vehicle for a club that can and does receive many distress calls into the very dangerous Alexandria Bay. Also we have a long stretch of unpatrolled beach south of the flagged area; again emphasizing the increasing need for the ATV.

To maintain its high standard of beach safety, it is important that they have premises that can support all needs; parking for vehicles, workshops, storage rooms, board racks, a gymnasium and lecture rooms. Then there is the section for officers that will cater for administration and also that essential fundraising and socializing arena, the Supporter Club. Since 1981/82 season when patrols in the modern generation of surf life saving were restarted on Sunshine Beach, they

have established a record that is definitely second to none, in both beach safety and competition. For example in 2017 for the first time in Australian lifesaving history both the Australian Lifesaver of the Year Scott Summers and Lifeguard of the Year Max Pettigrove, came from the same club, Sunshine Beach; add to this another national award the Australian Volunteer of the Year Warick Redwood . Finally the most recent award the State Operations Support Person of the Year also went to Scott Summers. This gives a good indication

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

as to the high standard of lifesaving within this club. As regard to competition their medal count at both state and national titles for such a small club, is definitely second to none. So in February 2019 when the existing building is demolished and Sunshine is reduced to working out of sea containers, there can be no doubt that with their club spirit and community support they will come through with flying colors. To lifesavers, supporters and all involved-good luck to all. â—?

MANGROVE JACK

RAIN BRINGS ON THE FISH With the recent weather it is quite obvious that offshore anglers have been a little challenged when it comes to getting outside. Most anglers have been getting out early to try and beat the breezes that has been springing up mid-morning. Sunshine Reef has still been producing the odd Spanish mackerel. It has also been a great spot for Coral Trout, venus tusk fish, Maori cod, pearl perch and northern Bluefin tuna. Micro jigs have accounted for Moses perch, Grass Sweetlip and Squire. The odd school of keeper size Cobia have also been cursing around. Long tail tuna are in great numbers and have been caught in Laguna Bay area. The dead giveaway is the bird activity which can you easily see from Noosa Main beach. The key to getting onto tuna is to cast your lure to the edges of the schools rather than right into the middle. The fish are taking a range of metal slugs, weighted and floating stick baits and soft plastics on a fast retrieve. For the larger boats that have headed a little further afield, Double Island has still been fishing well for Long tail tuna, Mahi Mahi, gold spot cod, moses perch, sweetlip, pearl perch and good sized Venus tusk fish. The Barwon Banks have also fished well for snapper, Venus tusk fish, squire, hussar, Maori cod, red throat emperor, gold band snapper and the odd red emperor. In the river; with the water being the colour it is, the run in tide has been the noosatoday.com.au

Ryan Fox with a nice trevally from the river. most productive. Whiting have been in particularly good numbers with the amount of bait in the river. As whiting are predominantly bottom feeders and with the amount of water moving through the system at the moment there is a good amount of food for them to feed on. Trevally are also

on the chew, and Woods Bays have been full of them! Schools of baitfish are regularly chased around by hungry trevally and are easily spotted by looking for splashes on the surface. Small surface popper have been doing most of the damage. Soft plastics imitating a prawn seem to be a very popular

option at the moment as there are plenty of prawns starting to run. For the night angler creeping quietly around structures like the Tewantin Harbor and the structures around the Sound should see you tangling with mangrove jack. Fishing a slow rolled paddle around the deep holes in the river will also give you a really good chance of tangling with one of these prized fish. If you love your bait, then give free floating baits like frog mouth pillies, live poddy mullet/ herring, whitebait and fresh mullet strips a go. For the crabbers there have been an abundance of crabs around with the fresh water in the system. Mud crabbers should try the deeper sections near mangroves while for the sand crabs set your pots a little closer to the mouth. Of course the best bait is fresh mullet. Plenty of anglers are planning a trip to the Noosa North Shore over the upcoming Easter break where good numbers of whiting, bream and smaller dart are present in the deeper beach gutters. Using fresh baits like strip mullet and worms is working very well. The area north of Teewah is traditionally where most of the Jew and tailor hunters head and this year is no different. Live or fresh mullet is always a good starting point when it comes to tangling with one of these great predators. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
