Geelong goodwill firing up
By Luke Voogt More than a dozen Geelong volunteers are helping farmers rebuild their burnt out properties after fires devastated Victoria’s southwest. Highton retiree John Howie joined efforts to rebuild more than 3000km of fencing lost in four fires that tore through nearly 300 farms. “Some of the farmers have been in tears - they have nothing left,” the 67-year-old told the Indy from Cobden on Wednesday. “Honest to God, you’ve only got to see the devastation of how the wind can blow one way and wipe out everything, but 10 feet away it’s like brand new. “Some people have got properties that are purely scorched earth - that’s their life savings all gone.” The gratitude of farmers and their families amazed Mr Howie, who grew up on his parents’ farm in the Mallee before moving to Geelong. “We had a family who have come around with beautiful cut sandwiches on the back of a trusty Falcon ute,” he said. He and Lara friend Alan ‘Darkie’ Lewry travelled to Cobden on a “spur of the moment” decision last weekend. Continued page 5

Homeless clean up By Luke Voogt A Geelong school and family have raised $110,000 for a new laundry van for the homeless. Charity laundry service Orange Sky unveiled the van after the Indy last week revealed homelessness was rising at twice the rate of population growth in Geelong. Orange Sky's Lucas Patchett said Geelong went “on the radar“ after a spike in homeless numbers. “(Geelong) is quite high above the national average for homeless people and people doing it tough,” he said. “Looking at the data that just came out, there's a large need for this service.
“A lot of factors are going on with changes in the workforce and people really struggling to get by.” Mr Patchett and fellow 2016 Young Australian of the Year winner Nic Marchesi established Orange Sky to help the homeless with their self-confidence, health and dignity. “When we first started we wanted to improve their hygiene, now we have an environment where people from all walks of life come together and have a genuine conversation,” Mr Patchett said. Geelong's ’Bluey’ is the 25th van in Orange Sky’s national fleet and the charity’s first in regional Victoria. The Muir family donated $67,000 for the van, while Geelong Grammar students, like Ar-
chie Whitford, raised $63,000. “We chose Orange Sky because we saw the amazing work they were doing across the country, not only helping provide for vulnerable people but also giving them someone to talk to,” Archie said. Fellow grammar student Matilda von Bibra said the van would also provide the homeless with a point of social contact. “It’s beautiful to think it all starts with the simple act of talking.” Andrew Muir said his family was privileged to help the project become a reality. “We’ve long been passionate supporters of the important work that Orange Sky do,” he said.

City joins goat war By Luke Voogt Lara campaigners have won their bid for Geelong's council to appeal a proposed goat farm. Hundreds of protesters erupted in cheers at City Hall on Tuesday night as council narrowly voted in favour of taking their fight to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VACT). “I’m really proud of our community,” said emotional No Nuchev campaigner Browen Baker. Lara residents grilled councillors in question time over concerns the “intensive” farm could cause a Q fever outbreak and about a perceived “lack“ of public notice. More than 4500 signed petitions urging the council appeal, noting that VCAT had overturned
a larger farm at Moorabool. The petition also alleged undue pressure on objectors to compromise with council and Nuchev in an earlier VCAT conference. Council officers recommend against appealing, stating the last successful similar planning appeal was in 2002. Council met all obligations for public notification and the appeal could cost up to $60,000, they said. Council voted six to four in favour of ward councillor and Lara resident Kylie Grzybek's alternative recommendation to appeal. “I don’t think (the recommendation) met with standards of the community who we represent,“ she said.
IN BRIEF Parliament ‘misled’ Lara MP John Eren faces a privileges committee investigation over claims he misled parliament on the Andrews Government election rorts scandal, exposed in an Ombudsman's report. Opposition leader Matthew Guy has sought an investigation of Mr Eren's September rejection of questions about whether his taxpayer-funded staff worked on Bellarine MP Lisa Neville's campaign, which the Ombudsman confirmed last week.
Cr Ron Nelson, Eddy Kontelj, Anthony Aitken, Stephanie Asher and Trent Sullivan backed the motion. Mayor Bruce Harwood and Crs Peter Murrihy, Pat Murnane and Jim Mason opposed the motion. Cr Sarah Mansfield was on maternity leave. Nuchev issued a statement yesterday describing the split decision as “perplexing and disappointing.” “We appreciate the concern within the Lara community regarding the permit, however, this is largely driven by information that is factually incorrect or incomplete,” Nuchev said. “We continue to encourage people to reference the correct information that was submitted to council or to visit our website for facts about the permit.”
Storages down The region’s water storages have continued falling despite recording 48mm of rain in the past week, according to official measurements. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 53.7 per cent of capacity on Wednesday, down 700 million litres in seven days despite the first significant rain in weeks.
Bigger deal Federal politicians should consider giving the Great Ocean Road region a share of funding from a pending City Deal package initially intended for Geelong only, according to lobbyists. A delegation including the City Hall-funded G21 Region Alliance of local councils suggested widening the geographic scope of City Deal while visiting Canberra this week.
Blood shortage Geelong’s blood service is 130 donors short of keeping up with anticipated demand over Easter, according to its operator. Australian Red Cross Blood Service urged local donors to come forward “to prevent a seasonal shortage” as some residents left the region for holidays while visitors arrived in their thousands along the coast.
Train changes “Operational reasons” have forced changes to V/Line’s schedule for Geelong’s Easter Monday clash with Richmond. Services to and from Melbourne would use Southern Cross station rather than Richmond while trains leaving Geelong would depart from Marshall without stopping at the station on return, V/Line said.

Woman wanted Security cameras have captured images of a woman who might have “information” about the disappearance of a distracted shopper’s $270 at Coles Lara, according to police. The shopper left the cash when he walked away from a register but returned to find it missing at 9pm on 16 March, police said.
Holiday crackdown Local owners of properties claimed as holiday rentals face a tax office crackdown. Tax officials were “setting their sights” on deductions for holiday homes actually unavailable to renters other than family and friends, the Australian Taxation Office warned.

Ceres ‘most advantaged’ By Luke Voogt Ceres has emerged as the most “advantaged” area of Geelong, according to latest Census statistics. The 254-person town ranked highest in Geelong in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’(ABS) Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas, which ranks places by relative advantage and disadvantage. The ranking assesses factors like education, long-term unemployment and criminal convictions. Ceres ranked in the top three percent of towns and suburbs in Australia. Wandana Heights, Drumcondra, Barwon Heads and Batesford were the next on the list with all localities placing in the top seven per cent in Australia. Norlane emerged as most disadvantaged
GO NORTH: Cr Anthony Aitken. suburb in Geelong, followed by Whittington and Corio. Northern suburbs councillor Anthony Aitken said Geelong’s council had a responsibility to develop the city’s north and address the imbalance.
“It was an issue that was raised during the last council election,” he said. “The Norlane community believe they are being left behind in the transformation of Geelong.” Council had been successful in creating white-collar jobs in the city’s centre, Cr Aitken explained. “What it hasn’t been very successful in is creating significant blue-collar and low-skilled jobs.” Council “could not accept” Corio and Norlane’s unemployment rate of 18.4 per cent, he added. Cr Aitken urged state and federal governments to fund a proposed Northern Arts, Recreation and Community (ARC) project as part of the Turnbull Government’s recently announced City Deal.
Council recently awarded a design tender for the $61.6 million Northern ARC Health and Wellbeing Hub and committed $20.6 million to the project. Cr Aitken said council needed to create a “jobs corridor in the northern part of Geelong” and take advantage the Avalon industrial precinct. “This will help address the significant jobs disadvantage in the community we represent.” Cr Aitken said a Bay West port would be vital to addressing the jobs imbalance. Infrastructure Victoria recommended the Bay West proposal, near Werribee, as its favoured option for the state’s second port. But Infrastructure Victoria chief Michael Masson said at the time that Port of Melbourne would not reach its capacity until 2015, meaning Victoria would not need Bay West for 37 years.

FIRED UP: Grateful farmers bring John Howie and Alan Lewry lunch as they work alongside other volunteers to rebuild fire-stricken properties.
Local volunteers rush to help burnt farms From page 1 “On Saturday I printed out the information and showed Darkie, and on Sunday we were hooking up the caravans to go out,” he said. “We did a couple of kilometres of fence yesterday and we’ll do couple more today. If we can make their day easier that’s worth the journey.” Money has flowed in to BlazeAid since the fires hit, said the organisation’s founder and president Kevin Butler, a Kilmore sheep farmer.
But Mr Butler said BlazAid desperately needed $1 million to rebuild fences. The recent milk crisis had left many dairy farmers with “zero ability” to put money away for a natural disaster of this magnitude, he said. “We know there are some farmers that won’t make it but we know there are many farmers that will with the community’s help.” Scores of volunteers aged in their late teens to 70s had set up tents at base camps to help the farmers rebuild.
“It’s always a bit emotional for (farmers) when a team of strangers pulls up in their driveway with their sleeves rolled up ready to go.” But BlazeAid needed many volunteers more to get the job done, he said. “It’s a great sense of camaraderie and you get to sit down and enjoy a feed and a drink and have a good chin wag at the end of the day.“ WestVic Dairy regional manager Lindsay Ferguson thanked BlazeAid for coming to the aid of the region’s farmers.
Police are hunting a pair of suspects in the separate thefts of high-fashion sunglasses the same day at Westfield Geelong. Police this week released images of a female and a male wanted for questioning over the alleged thefts, hours apart last Friday. An “unknown female offender” allegedly stole a pair of Bvlgari sunglasses worth $520 around 2.30pm. The women in the surveillance camera image “maybe able to provide some information” about the theft, police said. The images showed her in a white-andblack-stripped dress with a handbag over a shoulder and tattos on her upper left arm and chest. The unknown male might hold “valuable information” about the earlier theft, at 9.50am. Police alleged the suspect thief entered a Westfield shop, “selected” a pair of Prada sunglasses worth $350, then “left the store without making any attempt to pay”, police said. Police urged anyone with information about either incident to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting incident number 180096344 for the alleged theft involving the woman or 21709136 for the incident with the male.

Moolap plan ‘now secret’ By Luke Voogt The Victorian Government’s 10-month “secrecy” on its Moolap coastal plans has prompted a local coalition MP to call for their release. "The government must release the plan so the Geelong community can move on and real things can start happening,” Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay said. The Andrews government remained secretive on its Moolap Coastal Strategic Framework Plan despite competing consultation in May 2017, Mr Ramsay said “This report is well overdue and it begs the question: what is going on? “Why the secrecy? Why the delay?” The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) began working on the plan in December 2014, Mr Ramsay said. “More than three years on the outcomes remains unknown. Clearly there are issues here that the Premier is struggling with. “What is the government really planning, or contriving, with this land and 10 kilometres of coastline?” The 1200-hectare study area includes a former Alcoa aluminium smelter site and rolling mill at Point Henry along with a disused Cheetham Salt works, farming land and existing industrial areas. In 2014 Ridley entered negotiations with the former state coalition government to redevelop the area with marinas, housing, commercial precincts and a golf course. “The Andrews government scrapped those discussions and began the Moolap plan in De-

But Victorian Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said she made no apology for the government “doing more work to get this right.” “The Geelong community don’t want rushed, ill-informed decisions about the future of this important site and I would encourage Mr Ramsay to get involved in a meaningful way," she said. “This is a huge opportunity for the Geelong region so we’re taking the time to do the consultation, get the facts and put in place the right plan to revitalises the area.” DELWP received feedback identifying the need to “better understand” impacts of “buffer areas around existing industry” after releasing draft plans last year, Ms D’Ambrosio said. DELWP then commissioned a buffer assessment for completion in May, she added. Ms D’Ambrosio said she anticipated making a decision on the final Moolap plan in the middle of this year.

DOUBLE TAKE Certain residents of Geelong’s southern suburbs might want to ease up on the choccies over Easter given some daunting figures out this week. Apparently Waurn Ponds has recorded the most sales of hot cross buns in Coles’ vast network of Victorian supermarkets, with customers snapping up more than 13 tonnes - and that's only as of last Friday! What's the total now, a week later? Only the Easter Bunny would know, or what it will be by Monday after the bun-munching peak. To make matters worse for bulging local waistlines, the most popular flavour of the buns sold was, of course, chocolate! Waurn Ponds shoppers seemed to love the “gooey centre” in particular, noted bakery manager Trent Kelly. Yes, Trent, but will feel the same way about their own “gooey" centres after Easter?
Survivor backs jab By Luke Voogt Imagine waking up deaf - Belmont mum and meningococcal survivor Renee D’Offay experienced that firsthand on a Sunday morning in 2002. “I woke up unable to hear myself speaking,” the 34-year-old said. “It’s almost like I was standing on the outside looking in.” Renee relived the experience as she urged teenagers to get vaccinated for meningococcal. “There’s absolutely no harm in having every single (vaccination) to prevent your friends, kids and babies from getting sick,” she said. The State Government expanded its vaccination program to target year 10 students last week, after eight cases of meningococcal in Victoria so far this year. Renee said nothing could have prepared her for her brief but near-deadly encounter with the disease, which left her naturally deaf. The then-19-year-old apprentice hairdresser had virus-like symptoms including headache, stomach pain and aching joints on Friday night, and her mum took her to a clinic on Saturday. “It’s certainly a blurry time,” she said. The doctor ran tests and advised the family to keep an eye on her but her symptoms progressively worsened over the weekend. “The Sunday morning was when I woke up and I couldn’t hear,” she said. “I felt empathy for my mum and my sister because I could tell how upset they were. I just had their concerned facial expressions to look at.” Her family rushed her to the ER after calling the doctor. “It wasn’t until the Sunday evening I got the diagnosis,” she said.

Animal rights need “international legal recognition”, according to the latest research out of Deakin University. Certainly the prospect of representing a cat at a newly constituted United Nations Animal Rights Council might appeal to a certain breed of lawyer. However, Deakin’s Dr Jane Kotzmann and Cassandra Seery argue that the rights of our furry friends really do deserve the same legal treatment as humans. And it’s all about dignity, the pair contends. They explain that animals exhibit everything from intentional behaviour to emotions and intelligence, indicating they have the mental building blocks for comprehending indignity. “There are no compelling reasons why the concept of dignity could not extend to animals,” Dr Kotzmann declares. Fair enough, maybe, but before Fido takes off for Geneva with his legal team we need to address the basics first. Such as, what can be less dignifying than wandering about without pants? Steers in strides, dogs in dungarees! Now there’s a test case for the UN!

Top cop back after dispute
East Geelong’s Lynne Foreman journeyed to Canberra on Tuesday to urge the Commonwealth to fully fund a scheme that would put her “in the driver’s seat”. The local grandmother was one of the first participants in the Federal Government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which changed her life. “I couldn’t even have a bath a under the old system,” the 61-year-old said. “Now I can have a bath and go swimming with the appropriate funding.“ Ms Foreman uses a motorised wheelchair because she has arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, a rare condition affecting joint movement. Her NDIS funding means she can choose from a range of carers and equipment to help her with daily activities. “Under the old system they told you what to do - now I have the choice,” she said. Ms Foreman even hits the waves twice a year with the Ocean Grove Disabled Surfers Association. “Back then there was no way known I could get a wetsuit on, let alone go surfing,” she said. “I just want to be able to do the same things every Australia can do.” But a lack of funding for the system has left some Geelong people with a disability behind, Ms Foreman said. “I have a friend - I won’t mention her name - but she’s having problems getting through the system. “While the NDIS has worked well for me and lots of other members of our community, it’s not working well for everyone. “If they can’t get into the NDIS they can’t get onto the basics.” Ms Foreman joined seven other campaign-
Geelong’s top cop has returned to work on Monday after agreeing to apologise for comments he accidentally pocket-dialled to a superior, Victoria Police has announced. Superintendent Craig Gillard was off work since late last year following the incident involving Melbourne-based Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh. The pair had made “good progress” toward resolving the “workplace dispute” from Supt Gillard’s unintentional call, Victoria Police said in a statement released last Friday ahead of his return on Monday. “Both Supt Gillard and AC Walsh have committed to re-establishing a productive and professional working relationship,” Vcctoria Police said. “Nothing is more important to our management team in Geelong than the quality of the policing service being provided and the continuing safety of the community. At Victoria Police our leadership team is committed to community safety first and foremost. Where disputes arise these are worked through with a view to ensuring workplace harmony and a continued focus on the safety of all Victorians.” Victoria Police said the incident was “not connected in any way to the Surf Coast Shire’s flying of a rainbow flag at their council offices”. Earlier this month the Indy reported concerns that the pair of top cops had fallen out over Surf Coast policeman and councillor Brian McKiterick’s opposition to flying a rainbow flag at his shire’s offices. Cr McKiterick confirmed the concerns, saying superiors had pressured him to go quiet on the flag issue while he was mayor in 2017. His claims led federal MP Sarah Henderson to call for an investigation into alleged interference in Cr McKiterick’s role as a councillor.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS: Lynne Foreman (right) joins Kirsten Deane, Carleeta Manser, Lynne Tully, Terri Warner, Ben Paior-Smith, Chris Riordan and Peter Tully at Parliament House calling for the Federal Government to fully fund the NDIS. ers at Parliament House urging politicians to fully fund the scheme. The Turnbull Federal Government announced in the 2017-18 Budget it would increase the Medicare Levy by 0.5 per cent to fund the NDIS. The legislation passed the House of Representatives in August 2017, but has since languished in the Senate. “The longer this uncertainty drags on, the more anxiety and stress builds within our community,” Ms Foreman said.
“We worry that soon the scheme may not be there when we need it. “We’re calling on our politicians to get moving and show their support for Australia’s disability community.“ Ms Foreman said increasing the funding would help streamline the scheme and provide more education on how to access it. “We want the problems with the scheme to be fixed, but we also want it to be funded. “We don’t want the problems to become an excuse for not funding the scheme.”

LETTERS Hear our Vision Richard Worland’s letter last week, headlined ‘Check this splendid work’, prompted me to remind Geelong Indy readers they can listen to fascinating articles from Investigator, the magazine of Geelong Historical Society, from 2pm every Tuesday on Vision Australia Radio Geelong. Readers can also listen at 2 pm Friday for readings from the Indy. I urged readers to check out both programs on Vision Australia Radio, 99.5 FM Geelong. Dawn Evans Highton
Compassion on parade I thank the many volunteers and organisations who helped in the response to the southwest fires nearly two weeks ago. Winds of 100km/h whipped the landscape into a blazing frenzy, with locals literally escaping fireballs by just seconds. The fires destroyed 26 homes and 63 sheds. Livestock was lost in the thousands. Mover 2000 sheep were destroyed and more than 1000 cattle died, 80 per cent of which were dairy cows. It was devastating. The animal losses alone were cruel, representing not just the loss of that animal but also the time and investment that went into them prior to the fires. The Cobden peat fire continues to cause disruptions and concern for the aged, young and those with vulnerable health conditions. Students in the area are either temporarily attending other schools safe from the peat impacts or are staying at home. The fires burnt 290 properties, totalling around 15,000Ha of land. About 2000km of fencing must be replaced. Seventy of the farms devastated were dairy farms. It is the first fire in Victorian to devastate an intensive agricultural area for some time. It exposed the impacts of a lack of power and water. While politicians parade at these times and love to be seen among the ashes, it is the nameless helpers, or the lifetime neighbours, who deserve our thanks and praise. We wish those recovering from the loss rest and resilience and we stand by to help. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria
Conventional Geelong thinking Why should the Geelong Shuffle, of one step forward and two steps back, come to the fore regarding an undersized convention centre and boutique hotel plonked for political expediency sake on the under-scaled Deakin University car park site? As it stands, it's parochial, blinkered, squarepeg-in-a-round-hole mentality from City of Greater Geelong, the big end of town and underperforming advocacy groups that are content with more of the same by surfing on the coat tails of the aforementioned. By far former mayor Darren Lyons best economic-driver suggestion was for a bayside icon incorporating a much-needed five-star hotel complex, with which federal MP Sarah Henderson has concurred. A last-minute, go-it-alone Andrews Coalition commitment prior to the November 11 state poll to fund the dud proposal would not only provide an underwhelming outcome but would also deny Deakin University CBD campus expansion scope down the track. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
BUCKETS & BOUQUETS Buckets to the Indy. Last week’s front page picture of the tippers showed Mark Zimmer wearing a Cats shirt, so how could he tip Melbourne? I’m following the mayor. He might have the inside information on Danger! Damo, Corio Bouquets to anyone who can tell the whereabouts of Sue Kelley. She lived in Chaffey Square before moving overseas many years ago. Graeme, Bell Park Bouquets to governments if they can make another public hospital in Geelong, or cut down on the city’s population of children. Caught out on morals The amazing revelation of cheating by out test cricketers is another cause to take note of the moral dilemma we face as a nation. A politician recently lost his position as Deputy Prime Minister because of an adulterous affair. The second highest officer in the military was also questioned about a failure to maintain his marriage vows. Banks are confessing their theft of customers’ funds through deceitful practices. Sport associations profit through their association with alcohol and gambling, the two greatest blights on society. We are rapidly becoming a non-Christian nation. Recent surveys have shown a rapid rise in youth atheism, which is accompanied by a decline in the concepts of truth and moral absolutes. The beliefs that gave strength to our pioneers and our nations as they faced great conflicts are neglected today. My grandchild received a catalogue of recommended reading in her primary school. Of the over 300 titles not reflected or presented a Bible story, but plenty included wizardry and some had doubtful language. This departure from our traditional strengths, from the morality founded on the 10 Commandments and the teaching of Jesus, has left a void where any behaviour is acceptable if personally satisfying and advantageous. These developments should cause every parent and concerned citizen to reflect on where society is going, and hopefully to seek the better way. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen Street Baptist Church
Power cost claim correct Darren Nash (Letters, 9 March) didn’t believe Alan Barron’s assertion (Letters, 26 April) that three proposed South Australian renewable energy projects would produce only the same output power as a new gas plant under construction near Adelaide but at seven times the cost. The three renewable projects are: a Port Augusta wind and solar farm costing $600 million

South Australia will spend an astounding $2050 million on these three projects with a total average output power of 207MW. The new gas plant will cost $295 million and produce 210MW! So what Alan Barron wrote was true. Mr Nash also believed that gas cost only 90c/ MWh. At that price it would generate the cheapest electricity on the planet. The reality is that gas prices have tripled in the last 10 years, mainly due to the closing down of 10 coal plants that used to produce 6000MW of cheap electricity. Perhaps Mr Nash could enlighten us as to where he obtained the 90c/MWh gas price. Peter Rees Bell Park
Ample electricity for all cars The dinosaur club is at it again, but it seems more like a last gasp against extinction than anything of substance. Alan Barron (Letters, 23 March) again tried to use scaremongering tactics rather than facts when he wrote that we won’t have enough electricity to power electric cars. A few facts are: personal vehicle, or car, utilisation is around four per cent. Even if this four per cent use occurred during the best six hours of sunlight each day, which it won’t, plenty of time would remain to recharge electric cars from the Sun; electricity generated from the Sun is cheaper than that generated from coal, and it does not require significant infrastructure. In fact, charging an electric car smooths demand and can be beneficial to the grid; and most electric vehicles have a range of 200kmplus. I don’t know about you, but I have real trouble getting a tradie to venture more than 20km from home! Some readers might remember that six or so months ago Mr Barron agreed to a meeting with

Mr Barron and his cohort received my details from the Indy but found all sorts of reasons not to meet, such as I was too arrogant, we could instead communicate by email, et cetera. It seems science and facts threated their little club. No doubt it is much easier for these dinosaurs to pull out 30 to 70-year-old articles, often from dubious sources, to use as evidence of why man is not changing the climate. Derek Lipka Geelong West
Minority’s flag redundant At a meeting in April 2017 a few Surf Coast councillors seemed to have lost direction of their agenda by broaching the subject of flying the rainbow flag at the civic precinct. Why should this have been a council issue? Why, before the flag was raised in June 2017, had council not traversed the whole community, by mail or other means, so it could have a say on the issue? On 14 September four councillors were pictured in a ‘Surf Coast Community Column’ with local advocates holding the rainbow flag and stating that they had supported marriage equality since 2014. “We are also proud that the rainbow flag flies at our civic precinct following a unanimous council resolution in June,” their column said. In November the contentious decision to fly the LBGTIQ flag made divisions between councillors and members of the community. Over the years many Surf Coast charity organisations and other groups of fundraisers have worked for their causes without pay or $6000 of ratepayers’ money for flag poles in their civic precinct, their patch of turf. Why should the unauthorised rainbow flag take priority over all these other groups? Senate has passed the bill for marriage equality, so why still fly the flag for equality? Tom McKechnie Torquay
Nothing but ’net Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has revealed massive deficiencies in the rollout of the NBN across regional Australia. The ACMA’s independent survey has found that one in three households left without phone or internet services when connecting to the NBN. What’s worse, more than 10 per cent continue to be without services after more than a month. This is a far cry from what NBN Co and the Federal Government claim. It’s not good enough for business or households relying on these services for work, study and online transactions. It is a shocking indictment on Malcolm Turnbull and his second-rate copper NBN. Labor has long called for action to improve people’s experience of connecting to the NBN. The government must update Australia’s telecommunications consumer-rights framework to include real consumer protections and guarantees. It is absurd that our Universal Service Obligation provides rights for phone boxes but not a household internet connection. The Government needs to act without delay. FINALLY FRIDAY
He’s Angry to everybody By Luke Voogt Only one person is allowed to call Angry Anderson by his given name, and it's definitely not a telemarketer. "They ring up and say 'is this Gary?' and I reply 'oh hey mum' - whether they're male or female," the 70-year-old said. "They go 'what?' And I say 'that's what my mother calls me. The only person that's allowed to call me Gary is my mother.'" The Australian rock icon spoke to the Indy ahead of Rose Tattoo's long-awaited return to Geelong at the Gateway Hotel on 21 April. The working-class city had always supported his band, Anderson explained. "It was a big deal to make the trip down to Geelong, go to the beach and hang out for a weekend there," he said. "There are a couple of gigs that stand out one at a pub that's not there anymore. We did a couple of really memorable gigs at the uni. "The other thing is how friendly the girlies are. The girls down there weren't scared of us they breed them tough down there." But Rose Tattoo is sporting a different lineup - with five members dying of cancer over the years and drummer Paul DeMarco going to jail for illegal gun possession in 2014. "We were struggling with Paul's dependencies," Anderson said. "Paul being in jail sort of knocked the wind out of me - I thought 'it's not working for me anymore.'" But Anderson reformed the band last year, picking the people he "always wanted to play with" for the Blood Brothers tour of Europe in June. "By that time I'd sort of got over my melancholy at losing the last of the originals," he said.
BAD BOYS: Angry Anderson (front) with Mark Evans, Bob Spencer, John Watson and Dai Pritchard. (Darryl Edwards)
The new line-up features bassist Mark Evans (AC/DC), guitarist Bob Spencer (The Angels and Skyhooks), John Watson (Australian Crawl) and Dai Pritchard. "I've known some of them for 40 years," Anderson said. "Johnnie Watson has been one of my favourite drummers since I first saw him play as a fresh-faced kid." Anderson was thrilled to see a mix of "oldguard faithful out the front wearing the t-
neck and choke myself." Anderson was abused as a child and grew up in a rough neighbourhood, but he channelled that pain into his music. "You can't write a song like Scarred for Life without going through it," he said. "People come up to me and say 'it's as if you wrote that song for me or about me.' And the simple answer is, yes, I did. There are so many of us out there who are survivors."
shirts" and young people inheriting the music from their parents. "It's the music that they're identifying with and that's the most rewarding thing." Even at 70 Anderson goes hard, although he admits he no longer does the "maniacal things" he used to. "In the old days I'd do things like head butt stuff," he said. "At the end of each set we would play Suicide City - I used to put a mike cord around my

they retrace the originals’ musical history from the '60s to Abbey Road. McCarthy grew up to the Beatles at his parents’ Melbourne home in the '60s. “It was sort of embedded into the brain box - I didn’t have much choice,” he said. McCarthy said getting the vocals right was challenging, but loved earning a living performing as the Beatles. “You need to practice a lot even though the Beatles haven’t written a song since the 1970s.” The Beatlez Tribute Show plays at Club Italia on 14 April.
More than 600 runners of all ages will tackle the sands of the Barwon River in the 39th Sheepwash Classic on Saturday. The run is the major fundraiser for Barwon Heads Primary School, with a dedicated group of parent volunteers and staff from the school running the event. Organisor of seven years Sarah Jackson said the event raised roughly $11,000 a year for the school, which has more than 450 local students. “It’s a beautiful course and it has a really fun vibe to it - some people dress up and walk it and we have some serious runners too.” Ocean Grove athlete James Dalton, 37, took out back-to-back Sheepwash Classics last year, with a time of 28.34 in the 8km event. Young up-and-coming runner Emilie Guy took out the women’s event in 31.15, placing an impressive fifth overall. The start gun fires at 8am, with runners taking off from near the mouth of the Barwon River. Runners then cross the footbridge and head down to the beach towards Ocean Grove, returning along the walking track. Fun runners and serious runners alike can take on either the 8km or 4km courses which wind around the Bellarine Peninsula’s spectacular coastline.

The authentic Beatles sound takes more than good vocals and musicians, according to tribute artist Scott McCarthy. His band, The Beatlez Tribute Show, uses all the same instruments and sound equipment that the originals did, the 53-year-old said. “You need that old equipment to create the sound. You can’t do it any other way.” The lifelong Beatles fan already had a collection of vintage gear before he put the tribute act together four years ago.
He and his bandmates jumped on the internet to find the rest. “It took a long time to dig all that stuff up because most of it you can’t buy today,” the band’s ‘John Lennon’ said. Occasionally people who saw the Beatles live commented on his band’s similar sound, McCarthy said. “They also take pictures of all the instruments. I think it’s the authenticity that sets our band apart.” The Beatlez go through at least 20 guitars and several costume changes each show as

The Rock Adventure Centre owner Richard Lodge loves helping kids push their limits and have a good time. “I’m actually halfway up a cliff at the moment,” says 45-year-old as he teaches a school group at Mount Arapiles. And with 12m walls and more than 100 climbs to test every level, The Rock is perfect for school holiday fun, with fitness mixed in. “It’s a great place for the entire family to get together and challenge themselves,” Richard says. “Lots of different ages and abilities can climb at the same time and have fun at the centre.” For those who find heights daunting or have never rock-climbed, the centre’s profes-
sional and experienced staff are happy to show them the ropes. “It’s a really safe and well-controlled environment for people to approach their limits and face their fears,” Richard says. “We have people who don’t want to leave the ground but at the end of the day they’re climbing to the top of the walls.” The centre also has an upstairs bouldering cave with a fully-padded floor and more than 500 square metres of constantly-changing problems of every style and grade. Richard has owned the centre for seven years, which has been open since 2001, and has climbed for 26. He recently came second in the masters section of the Australian Lead Championship.
Local kids traverse The Rock's bouldering cave with one of the centre's experienced instructors.

Fun for kids at Rollerway Take a walk through Lara Museum & Historical Centre's beautiful gardens to see what's hidden inside.
Museum gives kids a break
12383641-RC13-18
Parents can give their kids a break from mobile phones, tablets and TVs by journeying back in time at the Lara Museum & Historical Centre. Located in one of Lara’s oldest buildings, the museum gives kids a firsthand look at how their grandparents had fun the good old-fashioned way. “We’ve got old-time games that the kids can play, like quoits, hooky and hopscotch,” says museum president Ian Board. “It’s important for kids to get away from the screens a bit.” The museum has tools, machinery and an old Pianola for children to have a go at. “They tend to enjoy that,” Ian says. The best-behaved kids can even climb into the museum’s Model A Ford, which a local farmer converted into a ute in the 1930s.
“It still goes but not at the moment - it’s got a flat battery,” Ian says “He used it to cart hay and do his farm jobs with it.” And for parents there are plenty of crockery, farming and fashion displays, and photos, from a bygone era. Ian, a 70-year-old born-and-bred Lara local, set up the museum in 2013 with the help of generous locals and businesses. He and a friend collected a large array of antiques and memorabilia from the cupboards of Lara residents. “Lara had nothing at the time, so my mate and I thought we should try to capture some of the history before the oldies disappear,” he said.
As school holidays approach, Rollerway is again gearing up for another fun holiday. Centre manager Ashlie Aparicio says there is nothing like seeing kids “who can barely do up their skates” learn to skate in a matter of minutes. “It inspires me to keep training myself,” says the Australian Inline Hockey team rep. Ashlie has skated almost since learning to walk and grew up playing inline roller hockey at the Newtown rink. She’s the fourth generation of the 40-yearold family business. “My great-grandfather helped my grandparents as their skate mechanic at this centre,” she says. And now, with her nephews hitting the rink, the fifth generation is raring to go. Ashlie’s father Raul, who owns the centre, reckons skating is perfect for family fun. “Anyone can have a go, regardless of age; from one-year-olds to their grandparents,” he says. “Generations of people who have skated here as little kids have come back here as adults, with kids of their own.” Rollerway even caters for birthdays; a fun, active and great value alternative to children’s parties, according to Raul. Hundreds of kids and adults will roll up to the centre to hire roller skates and rollerblades for its holiday sessions, Ashlie says. “I think the key is the amazing atmosphere we create - who doesn’t like music and bright lights?”
Kids can learn to skate in minutes at Newtown's Rollerway centre. Rollerway Skate Centre is open every day over the holidays except Easter Sunday at 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. Phone 0411 335 544 or visit rollerway.com. au for information and opening times.

Experts in Geelong for the range of German cars Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealerstandard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

By Ewan Kennedy This is the one driving enthusiasts worldwide have been speculating on for years; a hot-hatch from Korea to compete with those from Japan and Europe. The Hyundai i30 N is aimed squarely at Subaru WRX, Volkswagen Golf GTi and the like. Being a brand new design it has the latest performance components both in mechanical and electronics. You get a lot of car for a pretty modest $39,990 plus on roads. Hyundai's ’N’ Performance Division is named for both the Namyang R&D Centre in Namyang, South Korea and for the famed Nurburgring in Germany where Hyundai has another test centre. Such is Australians taste for high-performance variants - we often come number one in global sales on a per capita basis with other marques - that the i30 N comes to Australia only in its topline version. That is the 202 kW (270 horsepower) ’Performance’ model which is the equivalent to i30 N ‘Performance Package’ vehicle sold in the countries. Development work was also carried out in Australia, including local suspension and steering setups, as well as hot weather testing. The powerplant is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder unit that delivers 202 kW at 6000rpm and 353Nm from 1450 to 4700 revs. Using overboost maximum torque can be as high as 378 Nm (1750 - 4200) for up to 18 seconds. Drive to the front wheels is though a six-speed manual gearbox. An eight speed double-clutch automatic transmission is under development but won't be here until late 2019. This delay in introducing the auto may initially hinder sales, but true high-performance drivers often prefer to do their own gearchanges. This despite the fact that modern autos are generally quicker than manuals. The N styling takes the standard i30 hatch and adds genuine aero aids to improve stability and downforce. A front under-bumper, side skirts, flics on the rear guards and a high-level rear wing all play their part. Inside is a pair of cloth-upholstered sports front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, alloy pedals, an ’N’ race computer and gearshift lights. In addition to the standard factory Satellite Navigation system, the i30 N has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well

as a wireless inductive charging pad for mobile phones (Qi standard) on the Luxury Pack option. Hyundai’s i30 N comes in six exterior colours. The hero shade is Performance Blue as seen on the World Rally Championship. Can’t say I liked the light blue when I first saw photos of it, but in the metal it's far more attractive and ties in well with the black details. Other colours available are: Clean Slate, Polar White, Micron Grey, Phantom Black and Engine Red. Colour enhancements include black side sills and gloss black exterior mirror shells. In a fascinating move Hyundai in Australia is keen to align the i30 N with motorsports. Believe it or not the standard Hyundai five-year, unlimited distance warranty covers track use, that is provided the car is used in non-competition events. The new i30 N is built in Europe at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Nosovice, Czech Republic. We have carried out extensive road and track tests on the new Hyundai i30 N in the Snowy Mountains and at Winton Motor Raceway. However Hyundai has put an embargo on this until March 29. When the South Koreans get serious they really do go all the way: high-performance Pirelli P-Zero HN 235/35x19 tyres were developed specifically i30 N. The i30 N’s Launch Control System manages engine torque, speed and turbo boost for standing start acceleration. Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) independently, manages front and rear bodyroll, as well as pitch and dive. This can be adjusted by the driver through the 8.0-inch touchscreen, with settings across a wide range, from comfort-oriented daily driving to high-intensity track work.

Battered Cats face sharp Hawks outfit By Justin Flynn After a heart-stopping last-gasp win against Melbourne in round one, Geelong faces a mouth-watering Easter Monday match-up against Hawthorn. The Cats have won their past four games against the Hawks - a three-point thriller in round 17 last year, an 86-point thumping in round three, and wins by two points and 30 points in 2016. The annual Easter Monday clash between the two teams has become a genuine blockbuster. The MCG is predicting a crowd of 60,000 for the game. Thanks to Max Gawn’s miss from 30 metres out in the dying seconds last week, Geelong started the season off nicely. Perhaps that’s being a bit harsh. The Cats hung on despite having an injury riddled bench for much of the second half. Mature aged recruit Tim Kelly was the big talking point in the aftermath. Kelly gathered 27 touches and kicked a goal on debut at the age of 23 and looks every bit the readymade player pundits were predicting he would be during the preseason. Gary Ablett enjoyed a successful homecom-
WELCOME: Gary Ablett's back in town with a 39-disposal second coming for the Cats. ing with a signature performance. His 39 possessions was equal to that of 200 gamer Joel Selwood. The Cats’ opponent on Monday, Hawthorn, looked sharp in a big win over Collingwood. Chris Scott is not known for employing the role of a tagger, but he may need to reconsider as Tom Mitchell ran amok, gathering the footy an astonishing 54 times, beating the previous record of 53, held by Gary Ablett and Greg Williams. Luke Breust was lively up forward for the Hawks with four goals, but then so was Daniel Menzel for the Cats with an identical haul,
although some misses in the last quarter could have proved costly. And while everyone at GMHBA Stadium was buzzing about Kelly’s debut, two other young Cats came under the spotlight in their first games. Esava Ratugolea, a 197cm and 102kg mountain, bursting onto the scene when he beat high-profile Demon recruit Jake Lever and kicked a goal with his first kick in the big league. Lachlan Fogarty’s turn came soon after, when he slammed one on the boot to also snag a goal with his first kick in AFL footy. Star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield declared himself a certain starter for the game during the week after missing round one with a slight hamstring strain. If Dangerfield plays, as expected, the Cats’ midfield bats deeper than any other team in the competition. Let these names roll off your tongue - Dangerfield, Selwood, Ablett and Duncan. Throw in Kelly, Fogarty and Brandon Parfitt and the future looks bright. The game, a designated Geelong home game, is at the MCG from 3.20pm Monday. Cats by eight points in another close one.
CHAMPION LINE-UP: Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Tyler Wright, Lakey Peterson and John John Florence with the Rip Curl Pro trophy. 179314
Stars descend on Pro but locals wipe out The world’s best surfers have gathered at Bells Beach for the Rip Curl Pro as local hopefuls lament losing their opportunities to compete against them over Easter. World champion John John Florence, threetime title holder Mick Fanning and reigning Bells victor Jordy Smith joined counterparts Tyler Wright and Lakey Peterson to launch the event this week. Fanning, competing in his final world tour event before retirement, said Bells was still a special place to him after winning the event four times during his career. “I really love Bells and how pretty this place is with the cliffs and surroundings,” he said. “There are also so many moments in surfing folklore from this place that it just feels 26 GEELONG INDY

special to be here. I first came here in 1998, and now 20 years later I’m coming here for my last event. “I’ve come full circle. It’s my last event but definitely not my last time here at Bells. “I’ll be surfing here for a long time to come.” Hawaiian Florence was looking forward to redemption at Bells after a shock secondround exist at the Gold Coast’s Quiksilver Pro earlier this month. “The Bell is probably the most legendary trophy in surfing. I’d be super excited to ring it but it’s a hard one to win because a lot of guys seem to have this wave dialled. “I do feel at home here. It’s a challenging wave but I love the raw ocean power and how
it’s always changing - it keeps you on your toes.” The event began on Wednesday, with forecasts for favourable surfing conditions over the Easter long weekend. A handful of local surfers will watch the competition enviously after failing to win wildcard entries in trials competitions earlier this week. Philip Island’s Carl Wright won his first men’s wildcard in 10 years of attempts, consigning hopes of Jan Juc’s Jack Perry to second place in overhead surf. Jan Juc’s India Robertson had the region’s highest placing in the women’s trials, finishing third behind wildcard winner Kobie Enright, of the Tweed Coast.
St Leonards feast of fish ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Wild weather spurred anglers on to some impressive captures over the past week. Most boats had no trouble securing a feed of whiting at St Leonards in the lead up to Easter. Picking a break in the weather was the only challenge but when the winds eased anchoring up along the well know area Bourke St was ideal. Fishing baits of pippies or tenderised squid along with timing trips around sunrise or sunset worked a treat. St Leonards also held some impressive squid, with land-based anglers having a ball landing numerous specimens of impressive size. The key was decent water clarity and using a size-three artificial jig. Heading around the corner, Queenscliff still caught the attention of anglers chasing kingfish, which should still hang around for another month or so. The fishing was tough due to the challenging weather but fish to 10kg were on offer. Inside the shelter of Queenscliff Harbour, silver trevally and Australian salmon devoured soft plastics worked on a slack tide. The Barwon River estuary, which fishes well at this time of year, produced some mulloway over 1m in length. Fishing fresh squid on the last hour of the incoming tide worked best, with the lower reaches of the system a great place to chuck out a bait. Black bream over 40cm were also on the chew, again with fresh baits ideal. Smaller-model whiting and salmon were banked by fishing small amounts of pippie on a running sinker rig. Surf anglers who timed trips with north winds beached excellent-conditioned salmon over 2kg on lures. Fishing pilchards on a paternoster rig also produced results, too. The smaller estuary systems along the Surf Coast were ideal for bream, as Trelly’s Geelong Peri Stravropoulos discovered. Both bait and lures caught fish. Corio Bay’s inner-harbour fished well again for pinkie snapper. Soft plastics like Gulp turtleback worms worked well when rigged on 1/6oz, 1/0 jig heads. The pinkies reached 50cm, with a few snapper among them along with some flathead bycatch. Freshwater fishos found Lake Purrumbete giving up brown trout along with large numbers of redfin, which were mostly located on sounders and caught with soft plastics. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir remained a solid option for redfin but reports of trout were thin, which should change as the weather cools. Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt ventured up to Bright last weekend, catching plenty of brown and rainbow trout from the streams. Adam chose to fly fish, which worked a treat in the small waters. Over the Easter break anglers should have a look at St Leonards for whiting, while Clifton Springs could be a great location just a short trip from the boat ramp for mixed bags also including squid, flathead and pinkies.
