30 years up for ladies

Members with their 25-year anniversary pins.

Silver service at Trafalgar At the March meeting, the Trafalgar and District Probus Club celebrated our 25 years anniversary following the AGM held on the same day. This was a busy day as the club had the normal general meeting and morning tea followed by the AGM where members were able to elect a full committee and new chairman, Anne Brennan. The club has been fortunate to have a great spirit of volunteerism as it has 19 members on committee and support roles. The 25th anniversary celebrations

included secretary Elly Fallon reading out the minutes of the very first meeting, which was followed by a report on the history of the early days from one of the remaining two Foundation members, being Jean Farmer, followed by a presentation from Glenys Ralls on the history of Trafalgar over the 25 years. This was followed by the presentation of 25 year anniversary pins to nine members who joined in that first year. These members are Peter and Jean Farmer, also Foundation members, Ivan and Elvie King,

Betty McCulloch, Isobel Robins, Margaret Swain, Edna Mynard and Joy Morrison (unfortunately Joy did not make it for the photo). Peter and Jean Farmer were also made life members on the day in recognition of their service to the club. Members finished with a wonderful lunch provided by our ladies and a toast to the club from president Anne, followed by a share of a gigantic cake to top off the day. The club is looking forward to the next 25 years.

February 15 marked the 30th anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the Traralgon Ladies Probus Club. The club now has 41 members, five of whom are foundation members and four members who joined later in 1988. Foundation secretary Val Skinner is still the club treasurer. A total of 39 ladies attended the birthday, held at the Traralgon Vineyard on Monday 5 February. The club had 36 members and three past presidents as guests. Members were thrilled to have 13 past presidents attend the celebrations. Thirty years of photo albums and other memorabilia provided lots of memories and laughs. A booklet celebrating the life and times of the club has also been produced. The club has provided many local women with close and long lasting friendships over the years.

IN early March, just over 100 members and 15 guests of The Glen Waverley Ladies Probus Club donned their pearls and joined in the 30th birthday celebration of their club, in Glen Waverley Uniting Church. President Kay Moore welcomed the Mayor of Monash, Paul Klisaris, who spoke briefly of the importance of the club to its members. Peter Jeffries from Rotary remembered warmly the close association with the club, which he has enjoyed since its initiation in 1988. The presence of 12 foundation members was acknowledged and welcomed with enthusiasm. Sixteen past presidents came forward one by one with their colourful feather dusters, and with gusto rendered a new version of ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’, complete with actions! The amazing talent of some members was further demonstrated, firstly by Eileen Scott, who recited a couple of poems by Pam Ayres and another titled ‘The Messiah’, all in a very convincing Yorkshire accent. Noela Sutherland then played a most enjoyable medley of pieces on the piano. Finally the ladies enjoyed a quick review of the club’s 30 years via a screen presentation, completing the formal part of the morning.

ON behalf of all club members of Watsonia Probus Club, president Trish Jordan was delighted to present Ian Hamilton, a 25 year inaugural member, with life membership, for his outstanding service and contribution to the club. Over the years Ian has been president, served three years as Treasurer, had three years on Trips and Tours, a great committee member and is currently secretary and public officer, a position he has held for the past eight years due to popular demand. All agreed that Ian’s dedication, leadership and mentoring has made him a most worthy recipient of this award as he continues to uphold the club’s values of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship.

DELEGATES MEETING Delegates Meeting on Monday 28 May at 10am at the Dandenong Club The winners from Ocean Grove with the shield and Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Services represenative Alyson Burchell.

Ocean Grove takes shield home

- Christine Kershaw

OCEAN Grove took out the annual Tuckers Funeral Harry Kirkland Shield Bowls competition at Werribee Bowls Club. The team of Jim Rogan, Bill Ryan , Bryan Olson and skipper Barry Hoar showed their skills by winning the annual Probus bowls tournament with 41 shots up, five shots ahead of the runner-up team of Werribee skipped by Jim Rayner. The annual event has been a feature of the Werribee Probus Club for the last 22 years. It hosted 18 representative teams of visitors from the Bellarine area, Colac and Maryborough as well as several teams from local clubs.

PAV Commitee

It was Ocean Grove’s first win since 2009 when a team skipped by G Joseph took the shield back to their club. The weather turned out well and, with play being on two grass and one carpet greens (similar to Ocean Grovet), the guys were excellent at adapting to the change of pace of the greens. Lunch was provided and it was considered a great day by the competing teams. Clubs wishing to compete next year can contact the Werribee Probus Club on 9748 8867.

HELLO Probians, It is Autumn, the most popular and pleasant time of the year. Now is the time to get out and about, both with your own clubs and to events that are sponsored by PAV. Please check with your Club’s Delegate for information that may not be heard through your normal channels. At our February delegates meeting we welcomed new members to our committee, but there are still more places to fill as we had two resignations from our longer serving members. It is not arduous and we usually enjoy our meetings where there is the opportunity to hear suggestions from each one. Friendship Days and various sports are offered to all Probians, ask your mates at your club to attend with you and make the days really great. Yours in Probus friendship, Joan Vogels OAM.

Northern Arctic adventure name a few. We were treated to a spectacular showing of the Northern Lights during the northern part of our cruise. We were starting to think we were very blessed… We then ventured into neighbouring Finland including a quick stop at the Russian border and the spectacular scenery continued. From the Santa’s Hotel in Saariselka on a brilliant clear day we had the pleasure of being pulled buy a fleet of Reindeer through snow and forests amazing.

FORTY years working in tourism….but I had never experienced anything quite like this! Leaving Melbourne in the middle of summer to visit winter on the other side of the earth to take on trains, planes and automobiles. You can’t be serious? Well this is exactly what our Probus group did and it was one of the best tours of my life and for others in our group. Nothing prepared me for the magnificence and a spellbinding assault on the senses on our recent journey to Norway, Finland and Estonia. The scenery was out of this world with clear blue skies and stunning sunsets. It’s a photographer’s paradise. Concerns about being cold was never an issue. Take plenty of layers and good footwear then it is not a problem. In fact, inside hotels, restaurants and even during our igloo stay it was always toasty warm. We started our journey in the beautiful city of Oslo in Norway. The first thing we noticed was the abundance of electric cars, they want to phase out petrol and diesel cars within five years. A visit to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and guided tour around the magnificent Vigeland Sculpture Park was a great way to start the tour. A ride on the famous Flam Railway

introduced us to the wonderful vistas of country Norway before a relaxing ferry ride and transfer to the beautiful Fleischers Hotel in Voss. We then enjoyed a few nights in the wonderful city of Bergen including a cable car ride to the top of the mountain overlooking the city. We enjoyed a great meal at one of the local restaurants and soaked up the local sights which included the most amazing fish market I have ever seen. The food in Norway is first class. For a change of pace, we commenced our six-night cruise on board our

Hurtigruten ship to a variety of fjord coastal villages as we headed north. It’s hard to believe the scenery could get any better but it did. Being part of a voyage, which delivered mail and supplies to isolated communities was a great way to see this part of the world. All of us enjoyed a number of optional shore excursions which is a must if you want to get a sense of what the country is all about. A range of tours was enjoyed including climbing a mountain, meeting the Vikings, dog sledding (that gets a wow tick) fishing villages and the North Cape to

A stay in Sinetta in glass igloos was unique as was the amazing carvings and rooms in the ice hotel. Did I mention the ice bar and ice fishing? We really enjoyed the Ranua Wildlife Park near Rovaniemi - close up views of polar bears, all sort of owls, an arctic wolf and wolverines and plenty of other wildlife was dramatic to say the least. Heading south to Helsinki we sailed on a very large ferry to the beautiful capital of Tallinn, Estonia. A great guide showed us the highlights on a walking tour visiting unique and ancient churches, paved roadways in one the best preserved medieval towns in the world. Sadly, we returned on the ferry back to Helsinki for a grand farewell dinner in a unique local restaurant. A spectacular lifetime experience Bucket List - tick! You too can experience this magical Northern Arctic Wonderland adventure of a life time in January/February 2019. Isle be back - return to Tassie IT was with a real sense of excitement that 20 members and friends of the Monash Combined Probus Club boarded the Spirit of Tasmania for a crossing of Bass Strait to commence and 11-day tour of Tasmania with Chris Grafen and his trusty “Highland Explorer” vehicle. Tasmania, like much of Victoria, was beginning to show the signs of low rainfall but the beautiful pasture land and magnificent Wilderness Rain Forests still delighted us with their beauty. This tour was entitled Tasmania ‘’Second Time Around’’ and as it was assumed that most of the group had already visited many of the well-known attractions, Chris included a number of less frequented points of interest. Members of the group voted the following as the most spectacular, enjoyable, interesting, dramatic or amazing inclusions. Jacob’s Ladder - A hair- raising switch back ascent to the summit of Ben Lomond, the second highest peak in Tasmania. The Wall In the Wilderness - An amazing wall of solid Huon Pine which has been intricately carved to illustrate Tasmania’s colourful history both natural and historical. It will be 110 metre in length when finally completed and the carving is absolutely brilliant. Pieman River Cruise - A spectacular and enjoyable four hours spent gliding down the Pieman through the pristine beauty of the Tarkine Wilderness. M.O.N.A. - A controversial collection of new art. Ask tour members for their impressions of this visit.

Members at the End of the Earth.

Jacob’s Ladder.

Home Hill- The home of Enid and Joseph Lyons and their 12 children. Joseph was Prime Minister of Australia from 19321939.Enid was the first female member of The House of Representatives and Federal Minister and became a Dame of The British Empire. The End Of The Earth -Following a coastal drive where we enjoyed majestic west coast scenery we were rewarded with a further spectacular view from The End of the Earth Lookout. More beautiful coastal scenery was enjoyed as we traversed the north-west area. Embarking on the Pieman River Cruise. 12354340-LB26-17

Donview’s adventures SINCE news of our exploits was last splashed across the pages of The Probian, members of Donview Heights Probus Club have continued to explore near and further with our latest adventures. A Mystery Tour in October last year took members to Geelong with visits to the historic National Wool Museum and the new, space-age Geelong City Library. The guided tours of both venues were both entertaining and educational - it was fascinating to inspect the technology of the old knitting and weaving machines (still in working order) and compare it to the computer-driven world of the futuristic library where everyone was riding the information highway. As the weather warmed up, we travelled to the Daylesford Convent in November with its colourful gallery displays and brilliant garden setting - the bright, clear air of the Central Highlands was refreshingly therapeutic for us city-dwellers. This year, we have been extremely fortunate with our outings to Arthurs Seat in February and Marysville in March, enjoying bright, sunny weather on both occasions. At Arthurs Seat, the return journey on the new Eagle Skylift gondola ride was blissful - absolutely silent with glorious views of the Mornington Peninsula and the bay stretching out forever before us. The journey through the Black Spur to the reborn village of Marysville was equally magical and breathtaking - it was so important that all of us could experience the opportunity to see how a devastated community could rebuild after a catastrophe. The sturdy old oak trees (planted by the early settlers in 1865) survive, lining the main street in all their leafy grandeur. The new dwellings springing up year by year are testament to the determination of the locals - of the original 520 buildings in the old town only 20 survived the fires. The current permanent population of around 200 supports a new primary school of only 26 students - our visit to this village was memorable. Further outings this year include a Werribee Zoo Safari and a tour of the Spirit of Tasmania at Station Pier. In November, a multi-day tour is planned to the Mount Gambier region. Our club calendar also includes supporting local venues through delicious “Chat and Chew’ luncheons and outings to cinema and theatre-group productions as well as a monthly guest-speaker program. Our club believes that members should always have something exciting and interesting to look forward to keeping both mind and body engaged in social activity.

Members enjoy the wool museum and library in Geelong and the Marysville outing.

Fun and games on the Bellarine

These were all excellent dishes and the trophy was hotly contested. The Service team, Pam and Noel, were very efficient but did give a little too much cheek to the diners who were after all paying customers. Topping it all off were the waiters’ outfits with custom bow ties (thank you Pam) and the team colour swatches and bow ties made by Glenda . In the end the Red team

prevailed with their delicious desserts and they took home the Golden Spatula trophy. After the big night on Wednesday, there were a few slow starters on Thursday, but most made it for the 8.30am Brekkie Girls and Men’s Muster breakfast at the Shelter Shed Cafe in Queenscliff. Following breakfast, the group took a guided heritage tour of Queenscliff led by a guide from the tourist information centre. It was a relaxed

group for happy hour that night followed by and informal barbecue or pizza. On Friday, after many goodbyes and a few more laughs, the group was off home to their regular lives. What a fabulous friendship group it is at Ringwood Clocktower Probus. Everyone contributed with their enthusiasm and participation to make a fun time for all.

The weather was kind, starting the week fine and sunny and ending cooler and cloudy, with only one burst of rain. Most caravaners arrived on the Sunday and the festivities kicked off with happy hour with a focus on masked wine tasting. Monday started with coffee at Point Lonsdale and then off to Jack Rabbit winery in Portarlington for lunch, with fabulous food and an equally fabulous outlook across Swan Bay. Happy hour again had a masked wine focus with lots of wine talk. Tuesday morning there was a guided tour of the Queenscliff Museum Fort. In the afternoon the balance of the travellers arrived and Tuesday night, after squeezing into the courtesy coach, the group was off to the bowls club for dinner. Wednesday started with coffee in Queenscliff followed by a game of barefoot bowls with 26 novice bowlers. Lots of fun and two of our crack team members managed to rest the bowl on the kitty. Well done Herb and David. Wednesday night was the Chef Challenge where four teams vied for the Probus Chef Trophy. The Blue team, John and Glenda , served beef koftas; the Black team, Irving and Clive, served Asian style salmon; the Yellow team, Rod and Margot, served Crème de menthe shots and ham and chicken bake and, last but not least, the Red team, Mary-Ann and Sue, served berry and white chocolate cheese cake and sticky fruit pudding and ice cream.

Wonderful tour on Tidemaster ON Monday 12 February, 36 members of the Noble Park Combined Probus Club set out from the clubrooms for a days’ outing to Tooradin, where they boarded the Tidemaster for a sight-seeing tour on the waters of Western Port to French Island. The day was perfect weather-wise and members enjoyed the hospitality of Lindsay

and Irene Mitchell, with Rex at the helm. The wonderful barbecue lunch provided by Irene was superb, so fresh and yummy, the best ever. Members arrived back at the clubrooms at 4pm after a wonderful outing, which would be highly recommended for other clubs.

Whirlwind tour of New Zealand

The Botanic Garden/Lady Norward Rose Garden feature 61 acres of landscapes and 3000 rose bushes were well worth a visit. Then there was the cable car which rises 390 feet from the heart of the city and offers spectacular views. These were some of the many features which some of our group experienced. In addition to points of interest there was the usual retail therapy which many took advantage of.

Our next port of call was Gisborne, another port where the ship’s tenders were used to ferry passengers ashore. Gisborne can and does lay claim to being the home town of the great opera diva, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, the capital of the chardonnay producing country and one of the highest Maori population areas in New Zealand. We spent most of our time browsing the various shops and admiring the views around this pleasant city before

returning to the ship. Leaving Gisborne we set sail for Tauranga, the ship actually docked in Maunganui. From the wharf it’s a short walk to one of the most spectacular beaches in New Zealand and a little further to Mount Maunganui 232m high and offers spectacular views across the Bay of Plenty. While we did not have anyone brave enough to venture to the top we did have some who walked around the base, hardy souls. As with most of our port of calls some members took advantage to explore the area and the town of Tauranga while others browsed the shopping area and relaxed. Due to a technical fault in the cruise ship our visit to Auckland was cancelled. This was most disappointing as all our group and the rest of the passengers were looking forward to visiting this beautiful city. Our next port of call would be our home port, Melbourne. One of the aspects about cruising is that the discoveries are not all scenic. Aboard there are so many events to keep a person interested and busy. There are various games, trivia, group meetings, films, music, dancing and of course the evening shows; we had some excellent shows. For those who like a little bit of retail therapy there are a number of shops aboard the ship. There were also many exciting dishes on the dining room menus to try or sample and many of our group did just that. Reality kicked in after 14 days of good food and great company and a wine or two when we arrived back in Melbourne and headed for home, not by the expected train but instead by coach. Well! We were back in Victoria. - Denis Hallinan

12381999-ACM15-18

A group of members from the Probus Club of Traralgon Combined, together with three guests, embarked on a voyage of discovery aboard the Golden Princess, destination New Zealand. Our first discovery should have been scenic cruising in the Fiordland National Park, taking in the wonderful views in the Milford and Doubtful Sounds; unfortunately Mother Nature played havoc with these plans by sending a cyclone across our course. The captain wisely took evasive action by altering course to avoid contact with the cyclone. Port Chalmers, the port for Dunedin was our first opportunity to stretch our sea legs. Some of our group took advantage of going on one of the many shore excursions while others visited Dunedin with its impressive architecture and of course Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle. Leaving Port Chalmers we sailed to our next port, Akaroa, there we anchored in the beautiful harbour. We were ferried into the dock by the ship’s tenders. Akaroa has a distinct French flavour about it. Here you will find the street signs in French; it is a very picturesque town, with breath taking scenery and friendly people. Many again took advantage of shore excursions, this time to the beautiful city of Christchurch, where they were able to see some of the after affects of the devastating earthquake. We up anchor and set sail for Wellington, New Zealand’s capital and for a change it did not live up to its name Windy Wellington. We had very pleasant weather. There are so many things to see and do in this city, many found that eight hours was very inadequate but had to accept that this was all there was.

Six new members at Ballarat

Sailing the Lady Nelson PAYNESVILLE Probus Club continues to thrive with 120-plus members enjoying the regular weekly and monthly activities, with some extraordinary ones thrown in as well. An example this month was an early morning cruise on the tall ship Lady Nelson, which was visiting Paynesville for the annual Classic Boat Rally being held in March. Thirty-three members boarded the ship at 7.30am for a 90 minute cruise on the

Gippsland Lakes and being a cool and breezy morning all were glad of their jackets and beanies.

PROBUS Club of Ballarat North hit the ground running for 2018 with a bumper attendance at the February meeting, and the induction of six new Probians. The room was buzzing with chat and laughter as folk caught up after the summer break. Indeed bringing the meeting to order proved quite a challenge. Leading Senior Constable Des Hudson spoke to members about the dangers of scamming. He delivered a very useful, timely and entertaining address. It was well received and there were lots of questions and comments. The Book Exchange table was groaning under the weight of discarded summer reading titles available for recycling. It proved a popular spot for discussions and reviews. Earlier in the month a sizable group spent a few days at Philip Island. Everyone enjoyed the getaway in a beautiful spot with weather that was mostly kind. The 2018 year is well under way with the many and varied groups settling into the swing of the new year.

Other activities over the next two months are the caravan and cabin trip to Ballarat and Daylesford and a Linga Longa bus trip for seven nights to Yarrawonga. The regular Explorers Group will be visiting the Sale Wetlands also during March and the monthly Happy Hours continue to be enjoyed.

Beating the heat on the Murray ON 7 February 2018, 40 members of the Echuca Moama District Probus Club kept it local at Echuca, and took a cruise on the MV Maryanne Cruising Restaurant, enjoying the air conditioned comfort on a very hot day. They took in the lovely sights the Murray River has to offer, with the many paddle steamers and houseboats passing by, all the while listening to the interesting commentary by the captain of the Port and surrounds, as well as doing a ‘How well do you know Echuca/Moama’ quiz. The MV Maryanne offers free cruising daily, with either Devonshire teas or a lunch option. Members enjoyed a lovely meal during the hour long cruise, with some of the group staying aboard to enjoy another hour of free cruising, and a cuppa and cake. It was a very pleasant way to spend some time on a very hot Echuca day.

Josie does birthday honours SANDBELT Ladies Probus Club foundation member Josie Wright turned 100 last year so members felt it fitting that she should cut the club’s 27th birthday cake. Last year, Josie had lunch at Victoria’s Government House hosted by the State Governor Linda Dessau. Having been a keen tennis player, Josie’s daughter and grandson arranged

for her to attend the Australian Open Tennis Tournament on three occasions this year, including the men’s final, where she received some red carpet treatment in the players’ area. Josie, a much respected member of Sandbelt, never misses monthly meetings. She takes care of her own shopping while still living independently in her home.

David’s epic drive Having an adventure is easy. Step 1- Drive down your street. Step 2 - Keep driving. Step 3 - Stop at London! You want double the adventure? Jump in the same four-wheel-drive. Drive a different route. Stop at London. David Gairns had great adventure going from Melbourne to London. Twice! The first was not only a journey from Melbourne to London via Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, China, Mongolia, Russia and Ukraine but involved precise organisation of border crossings, and contending with different cultures, languages and religions. It was also a journey of bonding between a father and son that was inspiring and maturing for each. For his next adventure he shipped his four-wheel-drive to Vladivostok and headed west to London. David told the story of his epic journeys recently to the Balwyn Central Probus Travel group’s monthly meeting with unusual images and graphic detail.

Probians soar on seat PAKENHAM East Probus Club jumped aboard the state of the art Eagle chairlift at Arthur’s Seat on Friday, 23 February. Despite the dull day, it was still a spectacular ride with magnificent news. Remembering the rather hair-raising ride of the early days when an open-air, tiny two-seated gondola creaked, bumped and swayed its way to the top, with only a metal bar to stop you from falling, these all-weather gondolas are so smooth, quiet and safe. True to its name, eagles soared above us on our journey. The day finished with a visit to Austplant nursery nearby. Over 600 species of native plants are for sale plus a great range of weird and wonderful sculptures. Year 2018 has started with a great outing, thanks to club events organiser Laurie Hudgson. If we've captured your interest, why not enquire about membership!

Different view of home FORTY members of the Leopold Gateway Probus, and their guests, took a tour of Corio Bay on the Hygeia in February. Despite a bad forecast, it was a beautiful sunny day.

The group met first for coffee at a cafe on Geelong’s amazing foreshore, before boarding the boat for a two hour lunch cruise. A crew member gave a short history of Geelong.

It was quite an experience for the group to see their home town from a different angle. Members left feeling very proud of their city - it’s not the ‘sleepy hollow’ of repute by those from the Big Smoke!

As much as possible, we provide whatever is necessary to allow people to keep living in their own homes.” Kellie says that helping people to socialise and connect with the local community is a common part of the support that Baptcare provides. “I take my customers out to all sorts of places. It might be to the opp shop or the cricket, or just for a nice drive. Whatever they want to do, we try our best to accommodate it.”

Having locally based workers makes a big difference to home care customers, Kellie says. “Our customers feel that they know the people who are looking after them, so it’s a more personalised service. But it’s also reassuring for them to know that their carers understand the local area, including other community services they can access.” Another important aspect of Baptcare’s home care service, according to Kellie, is that every person’s care is overseen by a Care Coordinator with healthcare qualifications. “All our Care Coordinators have a nursing or allied health degree, which is a great advantage. It means they have more insight into our customers’ needs, and can bring in the right people to help when those needs change.”

Caring in more ways than one Kellie says that Baptcare is more than just a service provider. “Baptcare is a truly caring organisation that goes out of its way to make sure older people receive the best possible care. This is not just a job for me – I do it because I love it. And it really means a lot to me that when I visit someone, it can make their day.”

Baptcare provides a wide range of home care services, both through government and selffunded services. These include: > Home Care Packages > Transport to social events or appointments > Social support groups > Day/overnight respite > Meal preparation > Home maintenance, vacuuming, changing sheets, cleaning, gardening > Help with daily tasks such as showering or dressing > Nursing and allied health.

Sand art at Romsey BALLARAT South Probus Club members enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Sand Sculpture Art at Romsey on 21 February. The club had a record of 50 members attend this activity.

All that jazz...

Guide Rosie fills members in on the details.

IN March, 36 members of Blackburn Bellbird Probus enjoyed a return visit to the Australian Jazz Museum. The club had visited the museum some years earlier when it was known as the Victorian Jazz Archive. The museum, located in Koombah Park at Wantirna, is dedicated to saving the rich and wonderful tradition of jazz in this country for future generations to enjoy. Members were broken into smaller groups which were guided through the

museum by some of their enthusiastic volunteers, who explained the diverse collection of Australian jazz music and memorabilia. After their tour of the museum, members were treated to just under an hour of great music from a trio, Blue Tango, followed by an enjoyable light lunch. The museum welcomes groups of up to 40 from Probus and other organisations and provides a very enjoyable experience at a reasonable cost.

The Q&A column aims to discover a bit more about people in the Probian community, beginning with members of the PAV executive.

Q&A With PAV vice-president, Christine Kershaw, How long have you been involved with Probus and with which club/clubs? I have been with Frankston Probus since 2014 and the PAV since 2016. What is something most people don’t know about you? People don’t know that I am type 1 Diabetic and have been for the past 48 years, also that I had triple bypass heart surgery in 2012 and micro clips fitted in 2013 have a kidney condition - but I can’t complain. What was your most memorable outing or event with Probus? A Wanderers Caravan Trip, where I was made most welcome, and the other one would be one of Glen’s information mornings for Probus groups.

Special recognition for Stan and Edie The Broadford Combined Probus Club’s AGM was held on Monday 12 March and Graeme Marshall was re-elected president for the 2018-19 year. At this meeting two members were presented with special awards. Stan and Edie Simpson received life membership plaques and certificates for their outstanding service to the club.

Free from the chain KARDINIA Probus Club recently decided the “president’s chain” was getting too heavy to wear for all the meeting and so decided to manufacture an A-frame display board to place on the front table at meetings and for the president to wear only a single badge. The attached photographs are selfexplanatory and in our case it was mainly constructed out of random material one of our members had within his workshop. Nevertheless to give some indication of

what we used, should other clubs wish to provide a similar A-frame, the size of the front face is 30cm by 60cm with a hand grip at the top. The rear stand is 24cm by 45cm with a rebate at the bottom. Both pieces are of 9mm plywood and stained/varnished before applying the felt to the front face with craft glue. The edges of the front face are covered with plastic “plasterboard edge strip“

(available from a plasterer or Bunnings, etc). A short piece of Piano Hinge is required to attach the two pieces together and we used narrow strips of wood as support for the hinge and toward the top of the back of the main board for fixing the velcro (refer to photo for their location) as this avoided screws projecting through the ply. The only other requirement is a long shoelace and a handyman to put it all together.

Call Now! This will be the best tour your group has done!

Classic way to spend day IN 2018, Boroondara Arts and Inventi Ensemble will present a series of Sunday afternoon classical music concerts at Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Sculpture in the frame THE Dingley Central Probus Camera Club, on its first outing in 2018, visited the Sculpture Park at Point Leo. This is a beautiful park, with its many sculptures and the opportunity to walk along the paths to view and photograph the works of art displayed. The setting on Western Port was spectacular and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. At short drive to Balnarring was where lunch was bought and then it was home to Dingley after a very interesting day.

Let Inventi Ensemble guide visitors through a delightful journey of classical music, from operatic arrangements to enchanting baroque and classical masterworks to amazing Australian repertoire. Artistic directors Ben Opie (oboe) and Melissa Doecke (flute) have drawn together some of Australia’s finest soloists and chamber musicians. Internationally, Inventi musicians have performed at the BBC Proms, London’s Southbank, with San Francisco’s Ensemble Parrallele, as well as at music festivals in the UK, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Prague, Italy and USA. The Sunday Classics series will feature harp, strings, piano and woodwind in an intimate chamber music setting. Each concert will be custom programmed by Inventi Ensemble and you are invited to meet the musicians following the concert. Sunday Classics are held on Sunday 13 May, 26 August and 25 November at 2pm all tickets are just $15. Another satisfied customer The team at Vergos VIP Tours received this lovely letter from a happy customer. HI Leonie and Joe Everyone came to me to say what a great outing we had and it was all thanks to you giving us such a lovely tour before and after lunch and making it so easy for everyone to get from and to the pier. Also, of course, your knowledge of Portarlington and your very friendly and warm welcome. A big thank you to you Leonie for taking the responsibility of organising the ferry and hotel. I just had to mention my name and we were ’on’ the ferry and ’in’ the hotel. For me, other than doing the initial research, the rest was a breeze. Everyone said they would love a repeat

of this outing so I will give it some thought may be for next year. Thanks too for the great photos another plus. Good luck with the great facility you are offering Portarlington. Everyone there should be very proud of your contribution to your community. I will always recommend you to everyone. Best wishes and another big thank you from all our Probus Club of Kew members who attended. Kind Regards, Bea.

news

Seeing a lot of this joint Healthy Ageing Dr Lorraine Baker I see a patient who has had some type of knee surgery - be it an arthroscopy or partial or full knee replacement - at least once a week. For every one of those there are many more who will have reported knee pain at some time including recently, a former gymnast who had her first major knee problem at nine years old! Knee problems can present at any time of life. In younger adult years, I often see torn cartilages and ligaments from skiing and ball sport injuries. There is excellent imaging available (MRI) which can assess these and sometimes a surgical procedure (arthroscopy) may be recommended. Arthroscopy is a procedure where a surgeon looks into the knee and can, by using special instruments remove, for example, a torn piece of cartilage which may be catching and “locking” a joint. In this younger age group, arthroscopy can be helpful for a single cartilage tear, but as we age, our cartilage in joints begins to weaken and become more fragile. When small fragments roughen up across the joint surface the research suggests arthroscopy is less useful. This “wear and tear” happens earlier in previously injured joints, and also sets in earlier in life and worsens the bigger the

load through the joint. That means people who are overweight or obese are much more likely to wear out their knees, and at a younger age. Once osteoarthritis of the knee is identified as the cause for knee pain it is important we discuss with patients that a knee joint replacement is neither the first line of treatment nor a quick fix - but used when the arthritis is so severe mobility or pain cannot be managed well. Joint replacement surgery is major surgery. Apart from careful use of antiinflammatory medication and paracetamol to reduce pain, weight loss for anyone who is overweight and obese will significantly

reduce the load through the knee joint, so sometimes referral to a dietitian may be advised. Referral to an allied health professional such as a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist allows a careful exercise regime to be developed to strengthen the muscles that support and stabilise the knee joint and allow for increased exercise to assist weight loss. It is important that the correct exercise technique is used or knee pain may increase, but once mastered, patients can do a home-based program. Enthusiastic exercisers, such as joggers, can have trouble adapting their lifestyles to

accommodate sore knees. It can take a lot of counselling to find a substitute exercise that brings the same satisfaction and sustained intensity. Waterbased exercise can be useful but certain swimming techniques can be detrimental - so always seek advice first. This is only a brief overview of issues around knee pain. As for many things in health, the best prevention is keep fit, maintain a healthy weight, exercise with correct technique and don’t despair! * Dr Lorraine Baker is a GP from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and President of AMA Victoria.

NO-ONE like going to visit the dentist, but we all know the value of looking after our teeth - and that goes for pets too. Tooth and gum problems are actually quite a big concern for many pets, and occur in eight out of ten cats over the age of three, and are the most commonly diagnosed health condition in all dogs over the age of three. They can also be found in younger pets - even puppies and kittens. Dental disease can be distressing for pets, and can cause severe pain and discomfort. Strong and well looked after teeth and gums help your pet to eat well, which in turn leads to general health and improved quality of life. Additionally, there is growing evidence that chronic oral disease causes problems in the heart, kidneys, and possibly the liver. So what can you do to help your furry friend’s chompers stay in tip-top condition? Make sure you take your pet in for regular dental check-ups every six to 12 months with your vet. This will allow early detection of dental disease and timely intervention. You can also regularly check inside your pet’s mouth between visits. Keep an eye out for teeth that are too long or broken, inflamed gums and any swelling or bleeding.

Cats Signs of dental problems for cats include: bad breath, reddened gums, yellowish-brown tartar on teeth, drooling or dropping food - but they may not show overt signs of pain.

· You can teach your cat to accept having its teeth brushed - ask your vet for advice.

· Specific dental food are ideal for cat’s oral health. Rabbits and guinea pigs Guinea pig and rabbit teeth constantly grow, so they need to have uninterrupted access to high fibre, low carb foods that help them keep the growth in check.

· Constant chewing will make their upper Treatment options for dental problems are limited in pets, and usually involve removal of problem teeth entirely. This means prevention is certainly better than cure.

Dogs Dogs are born without teeth and get all 28 baby teeth by eight weeks of age - too many, or too few teeth, may be a concern.

· Rabbits and guinea pigs need a good supply of grass hay in their enclosure, which should make up 80% of their diet. (The remaining diet should be around 15% leafy greens and 5% high quality pellets).

Huge hike in greyhound adoption

Lort Smith’s Pet Legacy Program can provide you with peace of mind knowing that, should the need arise, Lort Smith will find your pet/s a loving home and provide for all their medical needs for the rest of their days.

GREYHOUND Racing Victoria has set a new record for greyhounds rehomed in 2016-17 with 1314 dogs adopted out through the organisation’s Greyhound Adoption Program. It is the first time the program has adopted more than 1000 dogs in a financial year, smashing the previous record of 812 set in 2015-16. The 65 per cent increase in adoptions is one of many statistics revealed in GRV’s 2016-17 annual report that show a significant cultural improvement in Victorian greyhound racing over the past two years. A total of 2693 Victorian greyhounds found forever homes in 2016/17, with 1379 rehomed through channels such as thirdparty adoption agencies Gippsland Greys, Greyhound Safety Net and the RSPCA, as well as industry participants. Other key findings announced in the report tabled in Victorian Parliament were: A 15 per cent reduction in track injuries thanks largely to new measures implemented to improve track safety. A 54 per cent reduction in euthanasia numbers (1,429 down from 3,098 in 2015-16). A 35 per cent reduction in breeding of pups and litters. A 56 per cent increase in swabbing with 16,154 swabs conducted during 2016-17 resulting in only four more positive and irregular swabs (98) than in 2015-16. National turnover on Victorian greyhound racing increasing by 11.8 per cent to a record $2.03 billion. Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said Greyhound Racing Victoria had met the majority of the 68 recommendations from the Office of the Racing Integrity

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s adoption program now has a city-based showcase with the opening of the GAP cafe. Based in King Street, Melbourne, it is the first in Melbourne to have a greyhound theme and unlike most other food and beverage venues, dogs are allowed inside the premises as well as an outdoor area featuring decking and grass. The cafe was built to promote to people the beautiful greyhounds and increase the interest in greyhound adoptions. Opening the new facility are Racing Minister Martin Pakula with GRV board members Emmett Dunne and Peita Duncan and CEO Alan Clayton. Commissioner and the Chief Veterinary Officer in 2015; and with the Department of Justice and Regulation is continuing to work on the remainder. “Two years ago Victorian greyhound racing came under intense scrutiny and everyone involved understood that significant change was needed to the way our sport was conducted,” Mr Clayton said. “GRV and Victorian greyhound racing participants understood that for the sport to be viable, an increased emphasis on animal welfare and integrity was needed and these findings are indicative of what has been

significant cultural reform right across the state. “These results show that GRV has established itself as an effective regulatory body with animal welfare as an overriding priority.” New rules, improved assessment processes, new facilities, expanded foster care and adoption day programs were just some measures introduced to bring GAP adoption numbers well above 1000 for the first time ever. An upgrade of the Horsham track for animal safety reasons, new hoop arm lures and lighter catching pen gates were some of the measures introduced to increase track safety. “It’s a great result to rehome 1314 greyhounds through our Greyhound Adoption Program and to see 2693 dogs rehomed overall,” Mr Clayton said. Mr Clayton said while the key performance areas outlined in the report were very encouraging, GRV would continue to dedicate resources into its animal welfare and integrity functions, balanced with appropriate promotional efforts to ensure the industry has a sustainable, clean and prosperous future. “It has been a priority for GRV to engage with our participants in an ongoing manner on a number of issues so we can listen to their concerns and suggestions, while offering help wherever possible,” he said. “There has been widespread consultation through our stakeholder engagement workshops and our Industry Consultative Group while we are also focusing on building our partnership with the 13 Victorian greyhound racing clubs to deliver new and upgraded racing, welfare and industry development facilities and processes.”

Teddy couldn’t bear arms My Word Laurie Barber TEDDY bears were once called Roosevelt bears. I walked past a shop window one day and I remarked “they aren’t teddy bears and the person I was walking with (don’t say wife unless you want to start an argument) said something like “oh yes they are – the sign says they are. We kept on walking. But I knew they weren’t teddy bears. It was just that, coward that I am, I didn’t want to start at argument in the street. The name teddy bears originated in the United States, as you ascertained by reading the first paragraph, The bears were named after Theodore Roosevelt, who became a United States president. In the book The Inaugural Addresses of the Presidents (a book I bought in Florida) he said “much has been given us. Some said he was given a bear to kill, but he couldn’t do it. Others said an injured bear was let loose in his presence, but he still couldn’t kill it. I wasn‘t there at the time, so go with the story that suits you best. Apparently, President Roosevelt went to Mississippi at the invitation of the Mississippi Governor, Andrew Longino, to settle some dispute between that state and Louisiana. This is where the story becomes clouded.

Roosevelt was a keen hunter, but he couldn’t find a bear to kill. One story is that in his absence somebody found a sick bear and bound it to a tree expecting Roosevelt would shoot the bear. Another story says they found a sick bear that dogs had attacked and invited him to kill it. A third story says they released a bear cub so Roosevelt would find the bear and shoot it. Whatever story is correct, Roosevelt couldn’t shoot the bear, saying that would be unsportsmanlike. This all took place near a town called Onward .in 1902. Another person killed the bear with a knife after Roosevelt had left. But the story surrounding Roosevelt spread. The Washington Post on November 16, 1902, published a cartoon of Roosevelt looking the other way while a person holds the bear. The bear was a cub. The cartoon was drawn by Clifford Berryman. The cartoon was headlined Drawing the Line in Mississippi. It was also seen as a criticism of lynching in the south. Other cartoons depicted something

US President Ted Roosevelt with a 'teddy bear'. similar and over time a link developed between Theodore Roosevelt and bears. The New York Times of January 7, 1906, published the story of two bears, nicknamed Teddy B and Teddy G, that by this time were known as the Roosevelt Bears. They were presented to the Bronx Zoo.

Then a New York candy operator, Morris Michtom, put in the window two stuffed bears his wife had made and he asked Roosevelt for permission to call his bears “Teddy’s bears. An original Michtom teddy bear is on display at the National Museum of American History.

Taking in the Bellarine “

TUESDAY 13 February was a very beautiful summer morning when members of the Donvale Hill Probus Club met at Docklands for an excursion to the Bellarine Peninsula. They travelled on the regular catamaran ferry service down the western side of Port Phillip Bay (which was very calm) to the recently completed harbour facility at Portarlington. Arriving in Portarlington all were met by the Christians Bus Service and coach driver cum guide, Tom, who gave a commentary on the historic township. The Bellarine Hills area was first explored in 1803 and the original expedition was impressed by the fine pasture and soil. Wealthy Melbourne land owners in the late 1800 travelled to ‘Portarlington’ for holidays and the area later became a fishing village. Overfishing in the Bay saw deterioration of the environment and water quality, and thus the State Government introduced strict restrictions on catch limits. The recently established mussel fleet is now flourishing and operates from Port Arlington and Queenscliff. There are many fine homes built on the foreshore, along with new housing developments; residents can commute daily to Melbourne on the recently introduced regular ferry service. In 1803 Matthew Flinders named the area ‘Indented Heads’ as seen from Mount Martha on the eastern side of the Bay. Travel by road was slow and therefore three paddle steamers were in use for many years to serve the community of Indented Heads. In 1835, John Batman was sent by the Port Phillip Authority to Indented Heads to report on the suitability for sheep farming.

Fort Queenscliff, famous for firing the first shots in World War 1, when a German Freighter tried to leave Port Philip Bay. Warning shots were fired across its bow and it turned around and sailed back to Port Melbourne…

Whilst camped, a massacre was planned by a group of aborigines. Earlier, in 1803, five convicts had escaped in the area and it was thought that William Buckley had perished. In fact, he was saved from near death by three aborigine women who cared from him, thinking he was a re-incarnated spirit. He lived with this group for 32 years, marrying and living as one of them. Learning of the planned attack William Buckley negotiated between the Aborigines and the Batman camp preventing a massacre. Thus, after 32 years, he resumed contact with the early settlers and consequently received a pardon. Passing through St Leonards (where “Every day is a Sunday”) the group were reminded that much of the TV series “Sea Change” was filmed in this area. On the foreshore there is a labyrinth outlining William Buckley’s story. Offshore one could see a small cluster of boats indicating the whiting were running. Since the clean-up of the Bay, fish including the Southern blue fin tuna have again become more widespread. Land-care groups - Friends of Swan Bay, Friends of the Railway Line, Friends of Port

Philip Bay, Friends of Bellarine, etc. - are very active with plantings along creeks and streets, preventing soil erosion and an improvement of the water quality in the Bay. After a brief visit to Swan Bay, the group arrived at Queenscliff. Scotchmans Hill is the highest point on the Peninsula with a communication tower used, together with optical fibre and radio, as a link across the Bay. The lighthouses are a feature of Queenscliff. Black Lighthouse, one of only three in the world, is a directional lighthouse significant to marine navigation in the Bay. When large ships enter Philip Heads (only three kilometres wide) they have to navigate a one kilometre stretch of water (The Rip). A local pilot boards the ship and has to line up the black lighthouse with two other lighthouses, a white tower and green tower (with green and red lights), to safely enter through the Heads. The Marine Research Centre, together with the Marine Discovery Centre, has shown that efforts to clean up the Bay are succeeding. The award winning architectural building is an environmental design using recycled timber, a grass roof and natural light, natural ventilation and air conditioning.

Students of the Bellarine Secondary College have an environmental program collecting local indigenous plant seeds, propagating and growing them. The plants are available for local farmers to improve soil erosion, water run-off and habitat. The driver then took us past a native Yellow gum forest, the only one left on the peninsula, which is a nesting place for the White-crested Sea Eagle and refuge for the Orange Breasted Parrot that migrates from Tasmania each year, along with many other migratory birds. Many famous landmarks in the area were passed, namely Cottage by the Sea, the old Town Hall, the Hotel Q, the Esplanade Hotel, The Ozone Hotel and the Vue Grand Hotel. The Victoria Tavern is the oldest licenced establishment in Victoria. A memorial to the “George Tobin”, an unsinkable pilot boat, has been placed above the entrance to the Anglican Church. The pilot boat sank in 1991 and three pilots lost their lives. After lunch in Queenscliff. The driver took all to Fort Queenscliff, famous for firing the first shots in World War 1, when a German Freighter tried to leave Port Philip Bay. Warning shots were fired across its bow and it turned around and sailed back to Port Melbourne. From Point Lonsdale. All had a good view of Point Nepean and Cheviot Beach where Harold Holt disappeared. On the return bus trip to Portarlington the coach passed boutique wineries, and many other Bellarine attractions. This visit was but a ‘small taste’ of the delights of the Bellarine Peninsula. Thank you to Ken Falconer AOM for arranging this Probus tour. - Beverley McArthur and Michael White
