Shot of redemption By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park tattoo parlour that was the scene of an alleged bikie-gang related shooting in February has shut down and sought a form of ’redemption’. Nitro Ink, which was based at a shopping strip at Fordholm Road, has apparently changed its name to Redemption Tattoo Studio and is set to open in Somerville this month. A message on Nitro Ink’s Facebook page on 28 March boasted of the “exciting news”. “Facebook isn’t allowing us to re-name the page so we will be starting from scratch. “See you all real soon. I miss our loyal customers so much.” The shop had been closed since a customer was shot nine times by two hooded, armed men in front of staff and customers in the early afternoon of 22 February. During the ambush, two bullets from semiautomatic handguns blasted through the studio’s back wall into the offices of an adjoining real estate agent and a law firm, narrowly missing workers. The attack has been linked to an internal feud between the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang’s national president Michael Murray and former leader Amad ‘Jay’ Malkoun. The 36-year-old Malvern victim, a member of the gang, was believed to have fallen out with the jailed Murray. He was targeted by the shooters, according to police. At least 10 shots were fired. Nine of the “well directed” shots struck the prone victim, mainly to the upper body. “It’s only by pure miracle that our victim is alive today,” Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Topham, of Victoria Police’s Echo taskforce, said. “One of our priorities of investigation is how the offenders knew the victim was in the tattoo parlour when he was.” The ambush also posed a serious risk of harm to other people in the shopping centre, he said. CCTV footage shows panicked bystanders running inside a nearby pizza shop and others fleeing down the footpath during the shooting.

People flee in a panic from Nitro Ink during the shooting.

Seconds before, a stolen silver Audi stops in front of the shop. The alleged shooters emerge from the car’s passenger side and stride into the shop with guns in hand. They escape in the Audi, which was found burnt-out shortly afterwards in Robjant Street, Hampton Park. From there, the driver and the two shooters drove away in a black Jeep Wrangler, police say. The offenders are believed to be Victorians, part of a Comanchero faction aligned with the overseas-based Malkoun. Police had yet to find a link between the Nitro Ink shooting and the gun murder of former Comanchero leader Mick Hawi - who was buried in New South Wales on the same day. Det Sen Sgt Topham said Nitro Ink had closed down partly due to some of its tattooists refusing to return to the worksite.

Star News has been told of neighbouring businesses being conjoined in a push to have Nitro Ink evicted. A relieved business owner, who didn’t wish to be named, said the parlour’s departure was a victory for “people and media power”. Fourteen businesses jointly threatened to leave the shopping centre unless Nitro Ink was banished, he said. “We were handing our keys back to the landlord. “If this place doesn’t go, we would have all moved out.” Some traumatised staff from his business and other nearby enterprises had not returned to work since the incident, he said. Customers had also been reluctant to return. There had however been no blow-back from Nitro Ink. “They’re nice people, they were

just doing their jobs,” the neighbour said. Victoria Police’s anti-outlaw bikie gang Echo taskforce is also investigating a Comanchero member’s attempted murder in a Reservoir park in August. It is also believed to be related to the Murray-Malkoun feud. Det Sen Sgt Topham said “no stone was being left unturned” to bring the shooters to justice. “Further acts of violence are always a concern ... when we’re dealing with the Comanchero motorcycle gang. “We know they are a violent gang. “Right now it doesn’t appear to be a great time to be a member of the Comanchero motorcycle gang.” Any information on the shooting, the silver Audi and the black Wrangler to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

It’s not difficult to make the argument that housing affordability is the biggest problem we face in the South-East. And this in an area of Melbourne in which, generally, property is more affordable. Scarcely a week goes by without more bad news on the homeless front. Some of these people, we are told, have been spending 70 per cent of their income in a desperate attempt to keep a roof over their heads. It’s a feeling particularly keen among blue-collar males, who see their manufacturing jobs going overseas and their employment becoming more casual and insecure. Spare a thought for the young people, too, denied that wonderful feeling of building their first nest with their chosen partner. But here’s the rub - it’s a hot-button issue almost everywhere, that’s being politically ignored on every level. And we can only wonder as to why. Imagine, if you can, an Australia transformed by some serious political attention being directed to solving this first-order issue. Imagine an Australia in which, rather than being near the top of the housing price league ladder, we were nearer the bottom, or perhaps even just the middle. Imagine the homeless largely gone from our streets, and our young people rediscovering the Australian dream of home ownership. If you’d like to see an example of a prosperous Western nation with housing more within the reach of its citizens, have a look at what you get for your housing dollar in the United States. You’ll be surprised. - Jason Beck

Car thief nabbed by swift social thinking By Brendan Rees The owners of a $100,000 luxury sports car were left gutted after their pride and joy was pinched from Cranbourne West on Thursday, 31 March. Keith Sloan was devastated to find his home broken into at about 2pm. He said intruders had ransacked his home where they made off with jewellery and his Holden HSV GTS that was parked in the driveway. Minutes later, his wife Nicola posted a post on Facebook's Casey Crime Page about the burglary and the stolen car. "Within five minutes a lady sent a message saying that she was pretty confident the car was in her street, parked in the driveway," Mr Sloan said. He said he called police before jumping in a spare car and racing towards Taplan Crescent in Cranbourne West. "I was pulling into the street and saw the car sitting in the driveway with a bloke with his head under the bonnet," he said. "Within 30 seconds the police were behind us. As soon as the bloke saw the cops and us turn up, he bolted." Mr Sloan said the man jumped over a nearby fence. "We're driving around the streets to see if we could locate him." At this stage, he said the air wing and dog squad where also on scene, searching for the man. "It was funny how they caught him in the end," he said. "They roughly knew where he was from the air wing but they couldn't quite locate him." "He turned up to the house where he was

which wasn't his place to use his friend's mum's phone. So when he's run off he still had her phone in his pocket." "So the police have asked this lady 'What's your phone number?' and rung him back, pretending to be the friend to try and save him going 'Where are ya? Where are ya?'." He said the man yelled out to a passer-by asking which street they were in thinking his friend would come pick him up. After the man told police on the phone that he was in Calais Circuit in Cranbourne West, "Four divvy vans have then gone and got him," Mr Sloan said.

A 20-year-old Pakenham man was arrested at the scene. The man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle and burglary and remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 June. Mr Sloan was grateful for the quick response by Narre Warren police. "The cops were amazing. Senior Constable Pope and Acting Sergeant Buxton - their response was absolutely phenomenal." He added if it wasn't for the Casey Crime Page, "There's no way we wouldn't been able to find it (car)."

A Great Gatsby Gala Ball is being held next month to raise money for cancer research and the community is invited. Money raised will help expand the number of patients participating in the Monash Health Clinical Cancer Trials. Cancer victim Effie Atkins turned her life around when she volunteered for an experimental trial at Monash Hospital - a new form of cancer treatment that mobilises a person's immune system to fight the disease. Following the success of a High Tea fundraiser last November when the community rallied behind Ms Atkins, more than $25,000 has been raised. Ms Atkins said tickets were selling fast for the Dr Hope Gala Ball fundraiser. "I have been working hard to make sure this will be an outstanding, high class, dinner dance event with a band and Gatsby-era dance group, and complemented by its great location," she said. "I am so appreciative of the support of so many local businesses that have sponsored elements of the ball or have donated raffle prizes," she said. "There has been great progress with informing the Federal Minister of Health about the campaign, and starting the process of securing some significant government support." The Gala Ball will be held at 6.30pm on Saturday, April 14 at Bunjil Place. To book visit: trybooking.com/335491 under 'The Dr Hope Great Gatsby Gala Ball.' Tickets are $135 per person for a three course meal. Live band and entertainment included. People wishing to donate may visit Dr Hope on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ DrhopeMH.

A young Berwick brother-and-sister team has launched a phone app that reports crimes in real-time. Like many good ideas, the free CrimeChat app began with a chat over the dinner table. Darien and Karissa Narain and their family were talking about car break-ins in their normally-quiet neighbourhood. "One problem was we hadn't heard about (the break-ins) until two weeks later." The Narains' solution was a platform to connect neighbours in a suburb with real-time reports of local crimes, as well as a chat forum for safety issues. It also has an SOS function to alert loved ones if the user is in danger. In its infancy, the app has about 50 subscribers. So far, reported incidents included stolen bikes and car break-ins across a range of South-East suburbs. The incident posts are "user-generated" which has some pros and cons, Mr Narain said. It allows for rapid reporting but how do you ensure the reports are real and accurate? One of the safeguards is that users are verified through their mobile numbers to prevent

He said safety was more troubling in his homeland where high fences and security guards outside gated communities were commonplace. "It's not at the same extreme level over here, but it could get worse if we don't deal with it. "We wanted to be proactive, be part of the solution." Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani successfully moved for the council to meet with the CrimeChat creators in coming weeks. She backed the collaborative approach of using a social app to reduce crime. "There are some similar methods of communication but there is really no other competitor in this space. "At the very least, CrimeChat would increase communication to enhance neighbourhood unity and strengthening." Cr Crestani said despite crime rate drops in Casey in the past year, family violence, theft, home invasions and gang violence remained a concern. "I believe, that if families are strengthened and their associated support structures, then this will have a flow on effect and reduce other crimes."

Berwick Station car park upgrade

SE in need

VicTrack is delivering the Station Car Park Upgrades Program on behalf of the Victorian Government.

The South-East needs funding for an airport, rail links, irrigation and more, says an advocacy group. South East Melbourne (SEM) requested a meeting with Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher after the area missed out in the latest Infrastructure Australia priority projects list. SEM chair Simon McKeon said the SouthEast was home to 1.2 million people - a quarter of Melbourne's population - provided 470,000 jobs and was responsible for 20 per cent of the state's economic output. "Our population is growing so rapidly that jobs growth is falling behind population growth," he said.

An 18-year-old driver modified his Commodore's suspension into an unsafe state and then crashed while speeding through a chicane in a Berwick estate, a court heard. The man had rendered his car unroadworthy by removing its rear suspension and lowering the springs, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Gary Van Der Poel told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 29 March. With two passengers on board, the Pplate driver clipped a chicane at 60km/h on a 50km/h section of Bellevue Drive on 8 January about 8.30pm. He lost control of the car due to a combination of speed and the reconfigured suspension, Lead Sen Const Van Der Poel said. The car crashed head-on into a parked vehicle, causing "considerable damage" to the front of both, the court was told. When police arrived, both vehicles were

"It is imperative that the people and businesses of South-East Melbourne - which is one of Australia's biggest manufacturing regions and one of its fastest growing population centres - get the support that is needed." Mr McKeon said key initiatives included integrated an airport servicing the South-East, freight links and vital road upgrades, commuter and freight rail extensions, re-purposing the Port of Hastings and irrigation infrastructure to support agriculture. "These are just some elements of SEM's positive vision for this exciting and dynamic region," he said. Mr McKeon said missing out in the list was an opportunity.

facing in the same direction. The front passenger suffered shock and a soft-tissue injury to her left arm. She was taken to Casey Hospital by ambulance, the court heard. The man faced charges of dangerous driving, and driving as a P-plate holder with more than one peer passenger. The accused's car had hit a pothole just before entering the chicane, defence lawyer Esan Pilai told the court. He hadn't had a licence for long, had compensated the other car owner and expressed remorse, Mr Pilai said. The crash could have had far worse consequences, he conceded. Magistrate Julie O'Donnell warned the man that a dangerous driving charge carried a potential jail term. He was fined $800 without conviction, and ordered to complete a safe-driving program.

Church ‘tax’ in sights

Fight to save kids By Cam Lucadou-Wells

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Julie Cini and Anthony Byrne, middle, flanked by parents and children lobbying for the PBS listing. illness, losing two baby daughters Montanna and Zarlee to type-1 SMA. She founded and heads the Hallam-based charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia, and has fought for the PBS listing for the past two years. She said she was "blown away" by the support of a 11,201-signature petition, which was tabled in Parliament by Holt MP Anthony Byrne on 28 March.

Mr Byrne said he was honoured to present the petition, watched on by families with children with SMA. "Every day that passes without this drug means that parents have to watch their children's motor skills deteriorate, unable to do simple tasks ... "These families live in hope that one day soon they too will be able to access this vital drug."

Two Casey councillors have taken aim at a State Parliament bill against tax exemptions for religious groups' profitable businesses. Crs Rosalie Crestani and Susan Serey, in separate motions, called for Casey officers to investigate the impact of the proposed Charities Amendment Bill. Their motions were withdrawn at a 3 April meeting after the Bill was ruled unconstitutional by State Parliament's upperhouse president. Cr Crestani told Star News that the "wolf-insheep's clothing" Bill was a "war on religion", "pure evil" and "communistic". It would potentially damage the "fabric of our society" and destroy "our Judeo-Christrian roots", she said. Cr Crestani said she would be strongly opposed if the legislation again "reared its ugly head". The viability of religious groups and their services such as soup kitchens, food banks, play groups, markets and emergency assistance was at risk, she said. She had also sought Casey to investigate the impact on tax exemptions for hall hire, as well as rates reductions and exemptions for religious groups. It may fall upon Casey Council to sustain the services, she said. The two councillors are both linked to state political parties; Cr Crestani is part of Rise Up Australia and Cr Serey is running as a Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South. Ms Patten said the Bill was not an attack on religious organisations or their "fantastic charitable work". It codified protections for religiousrun charities, and would not impose land tax on places of public worship, for instance. "Soup kitchens, food banks, prayer meetings, schools, play groups, support groups as well as many other events and activities will all be protected under the current definitions of 'charitable purpose' - as they should be."

A Berwick woman has travelled to the halls of Federal Parliament in the latest step to make a life-saving drug accessible to children afflicted by a rare, cruel disease. Julie Cini met with Health Minister Greg Hunt on 28 March, arguing for the drug Nusinersan (Spinraza) to be fast-tracked onto the PBS list for children suffering Spinal Muscular Atrophy by June. She is hopeful of favourable news when Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee announces new PBS listings on 20 April. "Every time I go to bed I will have to talk with the man upstairs." Without the PBS, the drug is prohibitively expensive - about $750,000 for a 12-month course of six injections, she says. Up to 25 families have been given access to the drug - under a compassionate scheme offered by its pharmaceutical manufacturer. More than 200 families still await access. Without the drug, the illness destroys motor neurons and muscles - the means for children to crawl, walk, feed, sit, cough, swallow and breathe. Dubbed the childhood version of Motor Neuron Disease, it is the No.1 genetic killer of infants aged under 3. The drug Nusinersen has "phenomenal" properties, halting the disease's degenerative march and increasing patients' motor-function. "Normally type-1 SMA children have only 12 months of life," Ms Cini says. "Children on this treatment are now seeing their second birthday and they're growing stronger." Timely access is the difference between living and dying, walking and not walking, she says. Ms Cini knows too well the cruelty of the

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On the 29 March the Cranbourne Star News Facebook Page shared a story about the City of Casey opening applications for five different grants which offer support for services, projects, programs and events that benefit the Casey community. Here is how readers reacted online: Katie Atkin: Pity they're not supporting schools any more though!!! Our kids were trying to get a grant to clean up our neighbourhood parks but they stopped the funding this year. I'm tipping the council aren't going to pick up the rubbish! Charles William Mizzi: There needs to be education for the new immigrants who know nothing about littering. Remember the keep Australia beautiful campaigns, you may be too young, however it did work. Needs to happen again. I have been to Africa (Kenya) one day in Niorobi l picked up some litter and binned it; they looked at me like l was from another planet!

Disability access to the $125 million Bunjil Place is in sharp focus.

Buggy plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells A buggy had been suggested to transport people from Bunjil Place to its distant disabled car parks, a Casey Council report reveals. The proposal with possible volunteer drivers was discussed at a Casey Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee meeting on 12 February, but has not been enacted by the council. The lack of accessible parking has become a hot issue since Bunjil's 85-space basement car park - including disabled parking and a lift - was closed to the public. The nearest disabled parking bay is at least 200 steps from the customer service desk, and requires crossing in the elements over Patrick North East Drive. "Feedback is that they are quite a distance away and some have been unavailable when large events are taking place in the plaza," the minutes of the meeting state. Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon said she loved the buggy idea. "It came from a suggestion from one of the access and inclusion members, who would

look to providing the buggy. "I'm passionate about access being available to everyone to Bunjil Place." She said she was pleased by the response of council officers to fixing up access issues since the building opened in October. Casey has followed up suggestions for an accessibility improvement audit and handrails on the footbridges over the northern dry moat. The committee also spoke about the difficulty of finding entry and exit points in Bunjil's glass wall, and "many more" accessibility issues inside the building. Bunjil's design complied with disability access and building code standards. But there was an identified "gap between best practice and ... baseline requirements," according to the committee's minutes. Bunjil Close Out Projects manager Mark Dibsdale recently told Star News that 22 accessible parking bays were located as close as possible to the entrances of Casey ARC and Bunjil. An additional two accessible parking bays were set to be installed in the ARC car park.

Casey Hospital, like every Victorian hospital, seems caught in a legal "grey zone" unable to enforce a four-metre smoking ban outside its entrances. As a regular visitor in recent weeks, 'David' told Star News there were non-complying smokers nearly every time he'd attended the hospital. He requested a smoker to obey the ban and she laughed in his face, he says. "Every time we went to the hospital - which was over 20 times - there's someone smoking at the entrance. "A staff member told me to write to the newspapers about it. "Why don't they put up signs saying there's on-the-spot fines?" 'David' worries about the patients - including those with respiratory problems - who are wheeled through the entrances. "Babies are being brought in and out of the entrances - and people are still smoking. "They are so selfish. They don't give a crap." Concerns have been raised about the safety of patients and medical staff requesting smok-

ers to comply since a surgeon died outside Box Hill Hospital in May 2017. A man has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in a Supreme Court hearing over the allegedly fatal punch on the surgeon. It was alleged that the punch was prompted by a request for the man not to smoke near the hospital's entrance. In a statement, Monash Health backed the smoking ban, with smoking ban signs at each of its hospitals. "If our security staff at Casey Hospital observe someone smoking, the person will be asked to smoke away from the Hospital." However, Australian Medical Association president Lorraine Baker said there was an enforcement "grey zone" around the smoking ban. There was a public expectation that hospitals would enforce the ban, but the authority lay with local government officers, Dr Baker said. "It's difficult and one hopes that given a prompt, people would respond favourably not to smoke outside hospitals." In this situation, if there were repeated breaches, Casey Council could be called to enforce the ban, she said.

Erratic driver faces charges Dandenong Divisional Response Unit members have charged a man following an incident on the Monash Freeway on Sunday 1 April. It is alleged a man was driving erratically along the outbound lanes of the freeway in Berwick about 3.40am. The car caught fire about 4.10am near the Tynong Road exit in Tynong. The driver, a 23-year-old Traralgon man, first caught police attention about 3.40am on Intrepid Drive, Berwick, and refused to stop when officers tried to intercept him.

Police said the man then drove his white 2003 Holden Commodore outbound along the Monash Freeway’s inbound lanes. About 500 metres from the Tynong Road exit in Tynong, the man’s vehicle caught fire about 4.10am. Police alleged the driver ran from the car but they arrested him in nearby bushland a short time later with help from the Dog Squad. The driver was charged with conduct endangering life and other unrelated offences and has been remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 April.

What's the best thing about being being a butcher? You get to meet a lot of interesting people. What is your favorite movie? Enemy of the State with Will Smith and Gene Hackman. What's the funniest thing you have seen or heard in your shop? A funny story in my shop many years ago. We had a regular customer who always wanted to smell the lamb's fry before she bought it to make sure it was fresh. So one of my butchers was presenting the lamb's fry to her, holding it on his hand and was trying to put it directly under her nose. She came down as he went up and smack, bang lamb's fry right in her face!!! At school I...... At high school I wasn't the best student, I just wanted to work and earn money. At the time I had a part time job in a butcher shop as a clean up boy which then led to an apprenticeship. If you could play in any sporting event world-wide ,what would it be? Moto GP, love motorbikes, actually lets go crazier, Aisle of Mann.

Elvis Presley and John Lennon.

Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? For dinner I would have Mick Doohan, Michael Schumacher, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee,

What's something you love to throw on the BBQ or cook in the oven? I love to cook a trio of Meats which is a combination of a rib eye of beef, pork fillet, lamb

back strap trussed up into a roll and covered in pork crackle! By the way we do sell these by special order!! Best concert you have been to? Haha back in my day, Jesus Christ Superstar.

WHEN QUALITY AND STYLE MATTER

A significant local landmark and one of Berwick’s earliest places of worship, the former Christ Church and Anglican Church is situated on a level corner block of about 650 square metres in the very heart of the village, with features including a historic bell tower and extensive paved forecourt. Since its cessation as a church, it has seen use as a dance studio. Alternatively, it could see a sympathetic conversion into residential use.

Inner city warehouse-style residential conversions have not only become accepted they have become sought after. Church conversions are arguably even more highly regarded due to their individuality. With works already carried out making the property liveable it presents an opportunity for those with creative flair to give it new life. â—?

It's covered For those on the lookout for the right window covering this winter, look no further than Dollar Curtains and Blinds custom made curtains. As Dollar Curtains and Blinds Marketing Manager Danielle Crosby explained, curtains are back in a big way. "In recent years curtains have had a facelift with our sleek and contemporary, Wavefold curtains," Danielle said. "These curtains are unique in that they drape with a smooth continuous wave effect creating a relaxed and elegant look. The floating fabric adds softness and warmth to a room, dramatically transforming any space." Best designed to hang the full length of windows, Danielle advised that floor to ceiling curtains are a must. "Hanging curtains as high as possible creates the illusion of height to a room, making windows look bigger and rooms feel more spacious, so it's no surprise they are becoming more and more popular in Australian homes," she said. "Curtains ensure complete light control, privacy and most importantly thermal insu-

lation. They are the most popular choice for homeowners interested in a more energy efficient home that's warmer in winter and can help save on their power bills. Curtains help to keep the chills out and the warmth in!" Dollar Curtains and Blinds has specialized in manufacturing custom made curtains for over 50 years, which are all made in its workrooms in Melbourne. Call the Fountain Gate team on 9704 8654 to get in touch with an interior consultant and arrange a free in-home measure and quote.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Tasty tale of a saucy star By Rebecca Skilton Don’t be fooled by the name. This business is anything but grumpy. Based in Cranbourne East, Grumpy Gary’s is the manufacturer and distributor of awardwinning, natural, handcrafted hot sauces. The exciting new kid on the block taking the chilli world by storm, Grumpy Gary’s is 100 per cent Australian, home-made and the absolute joy and passion of the Muhar family. “It started about four years back when I was working my full-time job,” Grumpy Gary himself, Gary Muhar, explained. “I used to make some hot sauces on the weekend just for myself and I would take them to work to spice up my food. “People started trying the hot sauce from my lunch and began asking ‘what was that hot sauce you had two weeks back?’ ... So I started keeping a record of what I was making and then people started buying and the orders grew. “I continued my full-time work for about a year and a half but (I couldn’t) keep both up and I thought; ‘That’s it, chilli wins!’” Struggling to handle all aspects of the Grumpy Gary’s business alone, Gary’s eldest daughter Nancy was the next to join the chilli venture. The 28-year-old left her full-time position as a nurse to become Grumpy Gary’s national sales manager. “Together Nancy and I were both (putting in) 100 per cent and trying to squeeze 110 per cent out of what we were doing,” Gary said. “So we turned to (my wife Archna and 22-year-old daughter Sabina) and said ‘Guys come on, help us out, we are drowning.’ “That’s when my wife quit her full-time work and she jumped into Grump Gary’s fulltime. She’s now looking after the back of house work. She is basically the brain behind Grumpy Gary’s that makes it function so efficiently. “And then we have Sabina. She’s looking after our social media and our branding. So all that you see on the Grumpy Gary’s website or social media, she’s the person behind it. She’s the one who designs our logos - every graphic you see is designed by Sabina.” Despite having little business training between them, the Muhars joined forces to bring their passion to life; a move that now sees them personally produce more than 1000 bottles of nine hot sauce flavours a week. And while Grumpy Gary’s sauces are stocked in 30 locations Australia wide, customers will still find the Muhars at local and interstate markets, events and festivals, where they love watching their sauces ‘wow’ customers. “This is what we love. This is our passion. Every day we work hard but we are having a good time. Life is a holiday and we are truly blessed,” Gary said. “But you want to know what fires up the whole Grump Gary’s network? It’s the response we get from the customers. It’s the expression

Archna, Gary, Sabina and Nancy Muhar are the passionate family team behind Grumpy Gary's hot sauces. 176940 we see in the customer’s eyes when they taste my hot sauce ... their eyebrows will rise up and their eyes will widen ... It’s like WOW! So that’s what fires us.” While Grumpy Gary’s has already rocked the chilli world, the future is looking just as bright with a number of new chilli products set to enter the Grumpy Gary’s range as well as the introduction of their hottest sauce yet. “It’s all thanks to our customers,” Nancy said.

“We came to Australia 15 years ago now as migrants and the way that this country and its people have accepted us with open arms (is amazing). And now they are giving us incredible feedback about our sauces. There’s nothing better. “We’re blessed to be a part of this amazing culture and this beautiful country. Just the fact that we are able to share a little bit of our food, our culture and our story with people that have so amazingly accepted us, it’s just great.”

Pictures: ROB CAREW.

And for anyone wondering about the Grumpy Gary’s name? “When he stops doing his smile, he has this resting grumpy face!” Nancy laughed. “I mean look at me,” Gary said. “What you guys fail to see that behind this grumpy looking guy is a big smiling heart. So that’s what it is, I thought okay the family calls me grumpy, says I look grumpy but I’m not grumpy, okay so if we go on the looks Grumpy Gary is what I am ... Grumpy Gary’s Hot Sauces it is!”

Students invited to choose the job of their dreams The City of Casey is holding two industry information forums in April designed to help people make informed choices regarding further education, training and career paths. SPORT

Lynbrook's fab four titles By Hayley Wildes When thinking of a successful season, many would regard one Premiership as being just that. At Lynbrook Junior Cricket Club, they do things bigger - think four Premierships! Having fielded six teams in the DDCA's 2017/18 season, four Lakers' teams made Grand Finals and all of those tasted the ultimate success. The Under 13-1, 13-3, 15-3 and 15-4s brought Premierships home to Lynbrook in stunning style. There were match-winning performances all over the place, but it's hard to go past Ryan Blake's unbeaten 50 to steer the Under 15-3's to the flag. Kevin Clare, Junior Vice President at Lynbrook Cricket Club talked about the season and that hectic grand final day. "We've been going for 12 years and this has been the most successful year for the juniors. It's been fantastic." Clare said. "There were people running around everywhere and we hosted two of the grand finals. We had a good local turnout with a lot of the senior club getting behind the juniors - even for the away games." With the senior players supporting the juniors, there's no doubt that that connection is helping the club flourish. "There has been a really strong connection this year - that's been one of the goals to bring the two closer together and it's really worked well. We have some of the senior guys helping with coaching all the time." Clare said. With over 100 registered junior players, and another 30 Milo Cricketers, the Lakers future is certainly a bright one. "The kids actually come from far and wide;

All four Lynbrook Premiership teams with their silverware. they don't just come from the Lynbrook/Lyndhurst area." Clare said. "We have kids travelling from Berwick to come and play with the club - they're kids who may have moved away from the area but still want to have ties to the club." The club also have a host of talented female cricketers coming through the ranks - with two

girls playing key roles in the Under 13-3s Premiership; Meera Hyderabad and Hasrat Gill. Hyderabad was a key figure all season for the Under 13-3s, with her wicket-keeping prowess shining through. With so much young talent, Lynbrook have no shortage of future stars and the name Jay Singh is one to keep an eye on.

Photo: SUPPLIED Playing in the Under 13-1s, he dominated at the crease and was near impossible to get out. In 14 innings' he was only dismissed twice. Believe it or not, that's not the most impressive stat from his season. He scored 372 runs for the season with an average that beggars belief; 186. Eat your heart out, Donald Bradman.

Improved Cavs are building By Hayley Wildes

Sharon Smallwood, Troy Henson and the members of the Narre Warren North CFA - including Ty Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Murray - combined for a great cause on Good Friday. 179511

It was all for the kids By Russell Bennett All for the kids - it’s a simple moto, and it’s one the whole community rallies around every Good Friday for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Last Friday at Timbarra Reserve in Narre Warren, sections from the local sporting community, business, and even the CFA combined to raise some much-needed funds for the RCH. Spearheaded by Troy Henson from SES Taekwondo and Little Martial Arts, a whole day of exercises was planned for the community. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time in being community focussed,” Henson said. “We’ve always advertised ourselves for many years as being a club for the community and over the past six months in particular we’ve done a lot of growth and I felt it was the right time to now step up and do something with the community. “We thought working with charities would be the best way to do that and kicking off the year with the Good Friday Appeal, this is certainly something for the kids and it’s something that’s very close to the hearts of a lot of people.” 40 STAR NEWS

All up, over $2200 was raised to go towards the Good Friday Appeal. “There are a lot of kids out there that do it a lot tougher than some of the kids we get through our doors and we certainly want to throw our weight behind that and do as much as we can to support it, and in turn let the community know that this is who we are,” Henson said. “We are a community-based club, we are here for the local community, and we want to do our best for a few charities throughout the year and this was just a great place to start.” Members of both martial arts clubs, as well as other community members, joined with some volunteers from the Narre Warren North fire brigade for a day of fun-filled activities including some which pitted the fire fighters against those from the martial arts clubs. “I know a couple of guys who’ve been part of my clubs for some time who are in the CFA and because we know they’re very community-focussed, we approached them and had a chat with them about the idea and they stood up right behind us,” Henson said, adding that the City of Casey council had also been hugely supportive in letting the reserve at Timbarra be used for the day.

The Casey Cavaliers will be looking to continue their hot run of form after making it four wins from four last round, with all their Big V teams proving too strong for their opposition. Round 3 will see the State Championship Men take on the Blackburn Vikings at Knox Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Blackburn are without a win after two rounds and Casey should be full of confidence after a strong win over the Knox Raiders in Round 2. Two games into the season, Casey's leaders have started strongly. The likes of Ben Louis (16.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game), Brandon Polk (15 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) and Raheem Lemons (15 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) have been their usual selves. Matt Donlan, in his first season with Casey, has provided a nice offensive lift to the squad. His 13.5 points and 2 assists have been a welcome addition to the offensive arsenal of the Cavs. Taking on the winless Vikings will not be an easy task. Brendan Trewella has got off to a scorching start to his season; averaging 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Keeping him

in check will be key for the Cavs. For the Division 1 Women, they will be hoping to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive against the Werribee Devils at Casey Stadium on Sunday at 3:30pm. The vastly improved Lady Cavs boast offensive firepower that they simply didn't possess last season. Tanarly Hood (14 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) and Billie Lucas (12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds) have been exactly what Cavs fans were hoping they would be - leaders and producing a strong offensive output. Amanda Hobba is putting her hand up early for most improved player in Division 1. After averaging 3 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists last season for the Lady-Cavs, she is off to a flyer in season 2018; averaging 13 points and 6 rebounds. Alyssa Bennett (11.5 points, 13 rebounds) and Sam Moodie (10.5 points, 13.5 rebounds) have been massive for Werribee. Curtail them and Casey will go a long way to beating the Devils. In other Casey Big V action, the Youth League 1 Men travel to Coburg to take on the Giants on Saturday night, while the Youth League 2 Women will be taking on Werribee prior to the Division 1 Women at Casey Stadium. Casey's Raheem Lemons has started his 2018 Big V campaign strongly. 167974 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

By Nick Creely Tom Donnell, Brett Forsyth, Peter Siddle, Darren Pattinson, Lincoln Edwards, Cam Forsyth, Akshat Buch, Ed Newman, Jacques Augustin, James Nanopoulos, Peter Cassidy and Jak Jowett. These are the names of champions, all etched into Dandenong history as premiership players, and as one of the great sides of the Victorian Premier Cricket modern era. Throughout what has been an extraordinary 2017/18, in which Tom Donnell's ruthless squad has built a reputation and standing that will be talked about for a long time, the Panthers have exceeded every challenge in its wake. Throwing back to the demolition of Carlton to claim the one day premiership, champion batsman Brett Forsyth declared "We're a hungry group and a hungry club, and we're always chasing titles." They've certainly played as such. Donnell's side, with its mix of exceptional young talent and dedicated veterans are a side to marvel at. And as they faced Fitzroy-Doncaster, a power club searching for its third premiership in a row over the Easter weekend, the Panthers were simply marvellous. The selectors were faced with a tough decision after former Test cricketer Peter Siddle suddenly became available for the Panthers, forcing impressive recruit Jak Jowett out of the match. It was a decision that ultimately proved inspiring, with a day one burst on Junction Oval the match winner. Siddle, with all his class and experience, shredded apart the Lions after being sent in, taking 6/45 to remove the reigning premiers for just 105. It didn't take long for Siddle to make his almighty impact known, removing opener Jack Rudd in his first over, before claiming the scalps of Matt Frith and Nat Vardi early to have the Lions 3/7 and on the back foot. Highly talented with bat or in the field, Cam Forsyth provided moments of magic in the field. His first was a catch of pure reflexes, with Vardi caught at back pad above his head with one hand. Later, Forsyth used incredible judgment to take another stunner in the outfield, removing the dangerous Trent Lawford as he looked to swing the game back. These were the moments that defined the game, and ultimately became the source of inspiration.

Peter Siddle lets it fly. Going in at stumps 3/119, with Lincoln Edwards and Ed Newman showing resolve to help the Panthers cross the Lions on first innings, it was just about batting time on day two and the cup was destined to make its way to Shepley Oval. Edwards finished on 56, taking his total 541 for the season, but the Lions fought back admirably, eventually dismissing the Panthers for 229 after Lawford (4/84) bent his back to give his side a fighting chance. Heading into the final day, the Lions rolled over for 161, with Darren Pattinson ending his extraordinary comeback season with 4/29 off 13 brilliant overs, and the task was simple, score 38 runs, and the title is Dandenong's. In a fitting moment, the Panthers' champion pair, a duo that has been a beacon of hope, leadership and class for the best part of a decade, found the runs. Tom Donnell (28) and Brett Forsyth (10) ran down the runs in just 5.1 overs, with Donnell belting the ball to deep square leg to bring up the winning runs. It ends a season where the Panthers truly bounced back from last year's heartbreak, with two titles in 2017/18 making them one of the more dominant sides in recent memory. The Panthers now have three premierships next to their name, with the 2017/18 cup set to sit next to the glory of 2006/07 and 2010/11, premierships that both Pattinson and Siddle also played in. A Stingray storm strikes By Hayley Wildes In blustery conditions at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Good Friday, the Dandenong Stingrays made it two wins from two to begin their season. Taking on the Gippsland Power, the first three quarters of the game were tough and tight. It was a back and forth battle, with neither team able to gain full ascendency. The first quarter was largely dominated by the Stingrays but they were unable to make the Power pay as they struggled to convert forward forays into goals. The wind certainly played a role in their wayward kicking (seven behinds in the first quarter). Gippsland's Xavier Duursma was absolutely everywhere in the first quarter, showcasing his running ability and clean skills. The Stingrays defence frustrated the Power as their loose gobbled up everything, thwarting almost all of the Power's attacks. A Josh Wykes goal early in the second term, by way of some composed play from Irving Mosquito, had the Power just a goal down. Stingray Jai Nanscawen's first goal of the game was a beauty; a couple of running bounces through the centre of the ground and a clean finish from 30 metres out. It was a sign of things to come. Back and forth goals followed, before another Nanscawen goal. Gippsland lifted late in the quarter, but much like Dandenong in the first quarter, were unable to put their domination onto the scoreboard. The third quarter kicked off with some Mosquito magic. His running goal from a tight angle had Gippsland trailing by just four points. The third quarter was owned by Gippsland, as they held Dandenong goalless and slotted through two of their own. They started to move the ball better, able to find more space and switch the play. Dandenong did have their chances late in the quarter though, but all attacking moves seemed to find their way to the right forward

Stingrays coach Craig Black has his team off to a 2-0 start in 2018. 171054 pocket, and the wind simply kept it there as countless kicks sailed over the boundary to the right of the goals. Heading into the final quarter, it was Gippsland 6.3 (39) leading Dandenong 5.8 (38). Dandenong's Mitch Riordan's ability to find the ball was impressive, whilst Jai Taylor also found plenty of the ball in the final quarter, playing a key role in transitioning smoothly into attack. trell and Gippsland's Mosquito looked to have the final term shaping up as a thrilling one. Bailey Williams, who had dominated all day for Dandenong slotted a major at the halfway point of the term to give his side a seven-point lead. From there, it was the 'Jai Nanscawen Show'. The dangerous forward, who had been buzzing around all day was simply irresistible in the final ten minutes of the game. He scored three goals in five minutes (six in total) to break the game open as the Power were un-

able to keep up with his speed and agility. Another goal to Williams after the siren saw the Stingrays post an impressive four-goal win over the Power, 11.10 (76) to 8.4 (52). Dandenong's Williams was enormous; his ability to take strong contested marks was vital both in defence and offence. As was Angus Paterson's performance; able to read the flight of the ball better than most in the windy conditions. For Gippsland, Brock Smith, Ryan Sparkes and Matthew McGannon were valiant all day.

Eagles are soaring as they embark on life in Division 2 By Hayley Wildes There is something exciting brewing at Power Reserve. The Doveton Eagles are hell bent on proving their worth in Division 2 of the SFNL, after winning the Division 3 Premiership last year. President of the club, Shane McGrath talked about the expectations heading into the 2018 season. "We're hoping to solidify our Division 2 position and stabilise as a Division 2 club. We've worked pretty hard to get out of Division 3 - we've done it once before in 2014 and weren't quite able to go up a Division and hold it." McGrath said. "We feel like we're in a much better position this time around. We feel like the club has come a long way through a lot of hard work from a lot of people, we certainly don't intend on going backwards, put it that way." That strengthened position on-field has a lot to do with the returning Premiership stars and plenty of class added into the mix. Nick Battle has crossed from the Doves and having played TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays and VFL with Casey and Frankston, is set to have a massive 2018 for the Eagles. Talking about those who have stood out over the preseason, two names - Battle and Russell Robertson - come to mind for McGrath. "[Battle] is a gun onballer and I think he'll have a real impact on our competition - he's a running machine and got good skills to go with it." McGrath said. "Robbo [Russell Robertson] last year was very injury-riddled, he carried sore ribs for three quarters of the season and kind of limped home in the end, but he was still more than serviceable - I think he averaged five or six goals a game." "He has managed to get a preseason under his belt this year and work has allowed him to be available every week, so we're really expecting big things from him this year." With new coaches at helm; Clint Wilson (head coach) and Ryan Hendy (playing assistant coach), the Eagles boast an abundance of experience and knowledge. Wilson is well-known to the Eagles, having played in the 2013 Division 3 Premiership and 42 STAR NEWS

The 2017 Southern Football Division 3 premiers, Doveton Eagles. coached the team in 2014. His return has been welcomed. "He's got a good connection to the club and knows the playing group really well." McGrath said. "With that in mind, he's probably able to identify our weaknesses and what we need to work on. He takes his footy seriously and brings a level of expectation that hopefully we will thrive on." Wilson is excited to back with the Eagles and the opportunity to coach the team in Division 2 was enticing.

"I've been out of footy and was always going to coach again. I thought we're going up and the footy club is in a really good position, what better way to come back than to take on a Premiership side and try to be a really strong Division 2 club?" Wilson said. "We went up last time I was coach and we were underprepared and we lost half the side, so I'm really excited to see what we can do this time around." The Eagles have brought in some other handy names as they build a list glittered with

depth, in a hectic off-season that should see them make a splash. Aside from Battle and Hendy, Nathan Wilson and Peter Dye also cross over from the Doves and will add to the overall depth. Ferntree Gully midfielder Josh Henry also comes to Power Reserve, and will be jostling for a spot in the Eagles' on ball brigade. The Eagles will begin their season on Saturday 7 April, with a clash against Clayton at Meade Reserve, a side that went through the Division 1 season winless in 2017. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
