Car thief nabbed By Brendan Rees The owners of a $100,000 luxury sports car were left gutted after their pride and joy was pinched from Cranbourne West on Thursday, 31 March. Keith Sloan was devastated to find his home broken into at about 2pm. He said intruders had ransacked his home where they made off with jewellery and his Holden HSV GTS that was parked in the driveway. Minutes later, his wife Nicola posted a post on Facebook's Casey Crime Page about the burglary and the stolen car. "Within five minutes a lady sent a message saying that she was pretty confident the car was in her street, parked in the driveway," Mr Sloan said. He said he called police before jumping in a spare car and racing towards Taplan Crescent in Cranbourne West. "I was pulling into the street and saw the car sitting in the driveway with a bloke with his head under the bonnet," he said. "Within 30 seconds the police were behind us. As soon as the bloke saw the cops and us turn up, he bolted." Mr Sloan said the man jumped over a nearby fence. "We're driving around the streets to see if we could locate him." At this stage, he said the air wing and dog squad where also on scene, searching for the man. "It was funny how they caught him in the end," he said. "They roughly knew where he was from the air wing but they couldn't quite locate him." "He turned up to the house where he was which wasn't his place to use his friend's mum's phone. So when he's run off he still had her phone in his pocket." "So the police have asked this lady 'What's your phone number?' and rung him back, pretending to be the friend to try and save him going 'Where are ya? Where are ya?'." He said the man yelled out to a passer-by asking which street they were in thinking his friend would come pick him up. After the man told police on the phone that he was in Calais Circuit in Cranbourne West, "Four divvy vans have then gone and got him," Mr Sloan said. A 20-year-old Pakenham man was arrested at the scene.

The man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle and burglary and remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 June.
Mr Sloan was grateful for the quick response by Narre Warren police. "The cops were amazing. Senior Constable Pope and Acting Sergeant Buxton - their re-
sponse was absolutely phenomenal." He added if it wasn't for the Casey Crime Page, "There's no way we wouldn't been able to find it (car)."

It’s not difficult to make the argument that housing affordability is the biggest problem we face in the South-East. And this in an area of Melbourne in which, generally, property is more affordable. Scarcely a week goes by without more bad news on the homeless front. Some of these people, we are told, have been spending 70 per cent of their income in a desperate attempt to keep a roof over their heads. It’s a feeling particularly keen among blue-collar males, who see their manufacturing jobs going overseas and their employment becoming more casual and insecure. Spare a thought for the young people, too, denied that wonderful feeling of building their first nest with their chosen partner. But here’s the rub - it’s a hot-button issue almost everywhere, that’s being politically ignored on every level. And we can only wonder as to why. Imagine, if you can, an Australia transformed by some serious political attention being directed to solving this first-order issue. Imagine an Australia in which, rather than being near the top of the housing price league ladder, we were nearer the bottom, or perhaps even just the middle. Imagine the homeless largely gone from our streets, and our young people rediscovering the Australian dream of home ownership. If you’d like to see an example of a prosperous Western nation with housing more within the reach of its citizens, have a look at what you get for your housing dollar in the United States. You’ll be surprised. - Jason Beck

Fire ripped through units By Brendan Rees
A fire ripped through a unit in Cranbourne North, causing damage to neighbouring properties.
Matthew Finnigan inspects the damage in his unit. alarms going off in her three-storey unit, which was damaged in the fire. “The neighbours were banging on the garage,“ she said.“I was down on the bottom floor. I just ran straight out of the house. I didn’t really see any smoke or anything.” She said her partner, Matthew Finnigan, got a garden hose before going back up to the second floor. “Then he said ‘No get out the lounge room’s on fire.’”
A couple's home was badly damaged in the fire. The couple escaped the blaze unscathed thanks to the efforts of firefighters. “We were really lucky,” she said. She said the fire crews were able to move all of her belongings away from the fire including sentimental photos of her brother who died two years ago. “It was fantastic, they did a great job.” “There is a bit of damage. We can’t live there anymore.“
Trailer theft caught on cam By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne North man has been left frustrated after footage captured brazen thieves allegedly stealing his custom-made trailer from the front of his home last week. Andrew Lyt posted on Facebook’s Casey Crime Page of a man pulling up in a white sedan before connecting the trailer to his car and driving off just before 9am on Thursday, 22 March. Mr Lyt’s said a CCTV camera installed at his home captured the moment his small enclosed, twin wheel trailer was taken from his nature strip. He asked not to reveal the street but added it happened near Glasscocks Road. The trailer, worth about $500, was matt black in colour with a sticker on the right side saying ‘Nick Wiseman.’ Mr Lyt added the trailer was not registered and the tow ball was not locked.
Grants open
He said he couldn’t believe such low lives had taken the trailer which was used for trips to carry motorbikes for his sons, aged 10 and 12. “It was a handy little trailer we would use all the time. My son races motocross,” he said. “They were spewing. The 10 year old wanted me to take him riding. I was going to take the car and the trailer. Next thing the frigging trailer’s gone so he couldn’t go.” “I’ve actually got a van as well but I put all the bikes normally in the trailer then I put all the other stuff in the van and we go away.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Mr Lyt on 0427 835 891.

Firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed a three-storey unit in Cranbourne North last Thursday, 29 March. Emergency services were called to the Paxford Drive building which was completely engulfed in flames at about 4.50am. CFA units from Cranbourne, Dandenong, Narre Warren, and Hallam extinguished the fire which caused extensive damage to two adjoining units. The fire was brought under control within an hour with the help of a ladder platform truck. Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said police are treating the fire as suspicious, adding there was a fire at the same Paxford Drive address on Monday, 26 March. “Police will investigate the cause of both fires however they are currently treating the blazes as suspicious,” she said. There were reports that the fire may have been linked to the death of a woman at a property on Collison Road in Cranbourne East on 23 March, however Ms Johnson confirmed this suspicion had been ruled out by police. CFA Operations Officer Paul Summons said an investigation would be conducted into the cause. “It looks like it was done potentially on purpose. The crews found a jerry can out the front of the fire that we believe may be linked.” He said police safely evacuated about 30 residents from the block of six adjoining units. “One unit was fully engulfed in fire with damaged sustained to one of the neighbouring properties. It was a good save by crews in the end through a challenging fire,” he said. A neighbour, who was able to flee her house with her partner, described the incident as “pretty scary.” Kim Cavanagh said she woke up to smoke

Homelessness crisis By Cam Lacadou-Wells and Brendan Rees Casey’s growing tide of homelessness has swelled well over 1000, according to the latest statistics. There were about 1280 homeless in the municipality in the 2016 official Census period up by 33 per cent from 2011 figures. It soared by double the rate of Casey’s population, while at the same time Victoria’s homelessness rate remained steady. Leanne Petrides, who runs Cranbourne Community Information and Support Service (CCISS), said the 1280 figure was almost certainly an under-estimation. “While there was quite assertive outreach at census time, I can guarantee that there would be many people who were homeless on the night but were not counted despite best efforts. “The homelessness issue is a real problem, and certainly growing in our community.” A massive boost to public and social housing was needed for hundreds of people without a home in Casey, she said. “We just find so many people who literally on the brink of losing their accommodation.” “They do everything in their power to keep that roof over their head even if that is costing 70 per cent of their income every fortnight,” she said. Ms Petrides welcomed City of Casey’s proactiveness, including the establishment of a Casey-Cardinia homelessness leadership group in February. The group includes service providers, charities, housing agencies, Victoria Police, Monash Health, Eastern Region Mental Health Association and the Department of Health and Human Services. Casey’s connected communities manager Jo Smale said a collaborative strategic approach was important in response to the “emerging housing crisis”.

Cranbourne Salvation Army's Support Services manager Kelly Jose says they have seen a rise in Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS the number of people needing breakfast and lunch. 179485 Since hosting a housing summit in October, Casey Council is applying for a grant for a social and affordable housing strategy and has developed a rooming-house planning policy. It is also investigating how to provide for affordable housing in the planning scheme. Ms Petrides added many people were forced to live in rooming houses, which was still eating most of their income, adding they were “often over-crowded and potentially dangerous.” “We would love for them to be able be actually get housing as opposed to just being a sleeping bag that we give them. And that number has certainly risen over time,” she said. Cranbourne Salvation Army’s Support Services manager Kelly Jose said they were under the pump, with a number of people sleeping
outside the building. “The other morning there was two but there have been cases where there have been five or six around the building, not necessarily in a car because some don’t have cars unfortunately,” she said. “We’ve got tents and sleeping bags here but unfortunately that’s all we can offer in the respect.” Ms Jose said they assisted more than 100 people per week seeking breakfast and lunch. “Most people come in here for food because their mortgages are just too high or all the other bills as well. “We’ve had a lot of people come in for blankets,” she said. “Food is probably at the end of the list for a lot of families unfortunately.”
Former racer Supreme, a four-year old male Greyhound, who was up for adoption at Peninsula’s RSPCA shelter, has found a new home. He was one of six Greyhounds from the shelter in Pearcedale to find a loving home following the RSPCA’s “50 Shades of Grey” adoption promotion in March. Twenty Greyhounds were successfully rehomed across the state. They were available for a reduced fee of $50, from Monday March 19 through to Sunday March 25. Supreme completed the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) assessment, making him exempt from wearing a muzzle in public under current Victorian legislation. RSPCA Victoria Animal Care Manager Liz Walker said she was delighted with the result. “It’s wonderful to think of them curled up on a couch with their new family. We still have gorgeous, sweet-natured Greyhounds available at several locations across Victoria, and encourage anyone interested in adoption to visit rspcavic.org.”

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On the 29 March the Cranbourne Star News Facebook Page shared a story about the City of Casey opening applications for five different grants which offer support for services, projects, programs and events that benefit the Casey community. Here is how readers reacted online: Katie Atkin: Pity they're not supporting schools any more though!!! Our kids were trying to get a grant to clean up our neighbourhood parks but they stopped the funding this year. I'm tipping the council aren't going to pick up the rubbish! Charles William Mizzi: There needs to be education for the new immigrants who know nothing about littering. Remember the keep Australia beautiful campaigns, you may be too young, however it did work. Needs to happen again. I have been to Africa (Kenya) one day in Niorobi l picked up some litter and binned it; they looked at me like l was from another planet!

Silent on cash plea By Brendan Rees Casey Council will write another letter to the State Government desperately seeking funds to restore the Cranbourne Public Hall - despite a year without a response. Council officers have made multiple attempts through emails and phone calls to seek the support of Deputy Secretary of Local Infrastructure and the Minister of Energy Environment and Climate Change, but have not received a response to date. Cr Amanda Stapledon said Casey Council was hopeful in obtaining about $2 million to restore the hall to its former glory. "All we're asking is for them to consider our request and let us know what they're thinking," she said "We would've expected them to come back to us, definitely. A year is a long time. We need their help." Casey Council resolved at a council meeting on 20 March to write to the Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D'Ambrosio calling on the State Government to provide funding opportunities to restore the hall, which was built in 1973 on crown land. Councillors agreed to request two separate meetings, one with Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera and Ms D'Ambrosio, and another with the State Opposition in seeking funding to upgrade the hall. Cr Stapledon said the hall was a wonderful community facility but was dilapidating. "It would be wonderful to see it able to provide modern facilities," she said. "A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into fund raising and constructing this hall many years ago. It is very loved by the community now and historically." Cranbourne Public Hall president Judy Davis said the committee could only carry out smaller jobs.
Laptop stolen from shop Police have released images of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the theft of a laptop in Cranbourne this month. It is believed a male entered the South Gippsland Highway business about 7.20pm on 8 March and walked to the laptop bench. He allegedly played with the tablets and stayed in the store for about 40 minutes before cutting a security wire attached to a laptop and walking away. Death driver guilty plea Cr Amanda Stapledon and Cranbourne Public Hall president Judy Davis are advocating funds to Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS refurbish the ageing Cranbourne Public Hall. 175532 "We're just trying to keep on top and do things as we can afford them," she said. Ms Davis said upgrading the asphalt in the carpark would cost the hall nearly $200,000, which was simply out of reach. "On top of that you've got to include the drainage. You've also got to have a civil engineer to get your all levels right." She said it wasn't good enough that neither state party had responded to the council's requests. "We're caught between a rock and a hard
place because we've got nothing. We're sitting here with a hall that badly in need of funds and we've got nothing." "If the State Government would put in money to do it all, it could all be done and bring this place up beautifully," Ms Davis said. "We're a non-profit and we do things where we can and thank the Casey Council because they have helped us." A report will come back to Council once these meetings have taken place with the Labor and Liberal party members.

BUSINESS IN FOCUS
Customers come first Pakenham Isuzu achieved the fourth highest sales figure in the nation in 2017 - ranking it ahead of 106 other dealerships in the group. It’s a remarkable achievement for a dealership that opened its doors barely three years ago in the then fledgling South East Business Park at Pakenham South. The outstanding sales figure reflects the popularity of the Isuzu product with customers from Phillip Island right through to Cranbourne and throughout Cardinia Shire. “When we first opened in 2015 we were selling four or five cars a month. Now we sell 50 to 60 new Isuzus a month,“ said principal dealer Peter Johnson. A good deal of that sales success can be attributed to Pakenham Isuzu’s good, old-fashioned country customer service. Even if customers don’t buy a car, Peter and his team are adamant that they walk away from the Commercial Drive showroom having had a good experience. Peter recounts the story of one customer who spent three hours with the Isuzu team, before deciding the range wasn’t right for him. “The very next week he walked people through our front door and his friends bought a car off us,“ Peter said. “We are a family run business and we like to provide a warm environment for customers. “Everyone who walks through the door here will feel valued. Whether they buy a car or not, we want them to feel like they’ve had a good experience.“ That intense focus on the customer experience earned the dealership third place for customer service at the 2017 national Isuzu Dealer Evaluation Awards. Peter grew up in a country family who were in the car dealership business. His parents still run dealerships across the Latrobe Valley. He remembers sitting at the dining table as a child listening his parents talk business.
The Pakenham dealership services customers from Phillip Island through Casey and Cardinia.
Isuzu Pakenham Dealer Principal Peter Johnson and New Car Sales Manager Luke McCubbin. After 12 years working with his parents, Peter had the opportunity to leave the Valley for Melbourne. The group identified Pakenham as the perfect place to open a new Isuzu dealership and continue the family’s association with the trusted Japanese brand. “We believed there was an opportunity in Pakenham, especially in a predominately rural community which was what we were used to,“ Peter said. “When we opened three years ago there was ARB across the road, Car Megamart and there might have been four or five other businesses here. There were dirt patches everywhere. “Now the business park is thriving.“
The Isuzu range includes the D-Max Ute and the seven seat MU-X. The brand has broad appeal among customers ranging from tradies and horse lovers, to soccer mums and grey nomads towing caravans. “We like it because it suits the lifestyle of the people in this area,“ Peter said. “Having previously engaged with the Isuzu Ute product, we saw what it was capable of and knew the reputation the brand had. “I am passionate about the product. It’s a fun product to be a part of.“ The dealership now employs 25 staff, all of them locals. “We are considered metro but we run it as a
country dealership,“ Peter explained. “ Farmers at Lang Lang get treated the same way as a buyer from Ringwood. A lot of our business is referral business for that reason. “We’ve worked really hard to build that reputation as a community dealership that looks after its own people.“ Part of that philosophy is Pakenham Isuzu’s commitment to community sponsorship. This financial year the dealership has contributed significantly to community groups including sporting and equestrian clubs. It is also a major sponsor of this year’s Farm World at Lardner Park. The dealership also gives back through its buddy bonus, whereby customers receive $150 if they refer a friend or family member to Pakenham Isuzu. It also offers a free pick-up service anywhere in Victoria. “50 per cent of our business is referral, which is extremely high in the car industry,“ Peter said. “I’ve never worked with a product everyone who buys it wants to tell everyone else about it. “It’s a vehicle that once people have a drive it sells itself.“

Cameras to catch dumpers By Brendan Rees
Thieves damaged the locks to the victim's toolbox. A Cranbourne West man's ute was targeted by thieves who allegedly stole his tools.
Easter theft By Brendan Rees A tradie has been left gutted after tools worth thousands of dollars were stolen from his ute at the Cranbourne Racecourse last weekend. Andy Nassau, of Cranbourne West, said his car was parked on the grass at the racecourse at about 12pm on Sunday, 1 April while he spent time with his eight month old daughter at the Easter Show. Mr Nassau returned to his ute about 2pm to find the locks on his tool boxes forced opened. Thieves allegedly made away with his WIA arc welder, a Milwaukee cordless kit, including a hammer drill, grinder, impact gun, six batteries and a six dock charger - valued at $2,500. "I was there not even two hours and came back to my car and it's busted open," he said. "They've put a set of vice grips on there or some sort of locking mechanism and they've bent it." Mr Nassau said he was absolutely devastated. "For all I know when I was standing around my car realising that all my tools are gone, it
could've been in a car with 10 to 15 metres of me." "I wish I could have my own vigilant justice put it that way." He said he tried to park closer to the racecourse entrance but was directed to park further out onto the grass area. "Somebody could've packed it (the tools) into their car and gone and enjoyed the rest of the festival," he said. "I've had terrible luck lately. I'm getting an operation in a few weeks because I've got a crushed artery in my left arm." "Falling behind in funds and then somebody goes and pinches $2,500 worth of my stuff." Unfortunately, he said he couldn't claim the loss on insurance as it wasn't part of his policy. Mr Nassau has appealed on Facebook's Casey Crime Page for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Cranbourne Police on 5991 0600. He said he may also be contacted on 0401 798 710.
Casey Council has resorted to installing surveillance cameras in a bid to catch illegal rubbish dumpers. Each year, the city pays about $1 million in collecting and disposing of illegally dumped rubbish. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said in last 12 months, council had responded to more than 1,300 litter reports and issued 216 notices resulting in 85 fines. He said council disposed of 600 tonnes of dumped rubbish each year. Council has recently begun the installation of cameras in various hot spots across the municipality to help clamp down on the issue. Council issues on the spot fines, including a $317 infringement for illegal dumping. Friends of Pearcedale's Colley Street Reserve treasurer Helen Beaver is fed up and said
she had seen plenty of old clothing and furniture being dumped it all sorts of places. "Really strange places you find these bags of clothes, some of them have been opened so you've got actually clothes on nature strips and things like that." Hampton Park resident Sue Florence said rubbish had been scattered across the River Gum Creek Reserve. "It's very unsightly. It's a shame people don't seem to have pride in their local area." Cr Ablett urged residents to be mindful about how they can dispose of waste responsibly. "There are plenty of easy and accessible ways that you can get rid of your litter without dumping it on the side of the road or leaving it behind," Cr Ablett said. If you would like to report a case of littering or illegal dumping, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/ litterreport.

Flying visit to school
Harmony at school By Brendan Rees Harmony Day celebrations filled Cranbourne's Rangebank Primary School on Wednesday, 21 March. The school was treated with a special visit from their Indian sister school, Bluebells School International, which is based in Delhi. Year Five students from Bluebells gave a presentation about the Indian culture and their way of schooling life, before performing an Indian dance. Rangebank Primary School principal Colin Avery said it was a memorable occasion, "full of culture and interest." "The bonds that have been established
through regular skyping sessions and visits to each other's school, has cemented a long term relationship that provides benefits to both schools." He added: "Harmony Day is about acceptance not tolerance". Special guests at the assembly in the school's newly extended hall included Pauline Richards, who stepped in Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera; Sophie Colquitt from the international division of the Department of Education and Training; Education Improvement Leader from the Education Department Anne Martin and school council president Lawrence Hamilton as well as Indian delegates from Bluebells School International and Bluebell's teacher Sarbani Kaur.

A former student of Cranbourne's St Peter's College returned to his old stomping ground last week, inspiring many students to become future leaders in the Australian Defence Force. Royal Australian Air Force (RAFF) traffic controller Flight Lieutenant Adon Lumley visited the school with members of the men's and women's RAAF football team who conducted a training session at the school's west campus oval on Friday, 23 March. The team were down for the Australian Defence Force Aussie Rules National Carnival for a two week period where they played against the Navy and Army football teams at Punt road Oval. Mr Lumley has served in the RAAF since 2003 after graduating from St Peter's College in 2002. "We are grateful to have been hosted by St Peter's. I am where I am because of St Peter's College. We aim to give back and inspire young men and women," he said. After training, Mr Lumley joined other RAAF personnel including a combat jet pilot, loadmasters, air-movements physical training instructors, and air combat officers in speaking with students about different careers in the RAAF. St Peter's College spokeswoman April Hampson said students were keen to learn about life in the Air Force. Students were told of the importance of doing well in English, maths and science subjects which are looked upon favourably when entering the RAAF. "Many students stayed behind, where the members of the team generously gave more of their time to meet with the students, and answer their individual questions," Ms Hampson said.

Cross cash By Brendan Rees Casey Council has boosted its school crossing funding to more than $1 million thanks to VicRoads pitching in half the funds. Last year the city got nearly $250,000 in funding, bringing the total to $894,968 for this financial year. But this was short of the 50/50 commitment promised by the Minister for Roads in December 2016. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said after negotiating with VicRoads, funding had increased to $1,147,790, returning the funding to that of the 50/50 partnership level. Cr Ablett said school crossings were a crucial service for Council and services could not be delivered "without adequate financial contributions." He said 50/50 split for the 2018/19 School Crossing Program would be announced in the May 2018 State Budget. "Children are one of our most vulnerable road users and are at a higher risk when cross-
ing roads due to their size and inability to judge speed and distance. "Our School Crossing Supervisors do a remarkable job positioned day-in-day-out come rain, hail or shine ensuring that we keep our children safe when travelling to and from school," Cr Ablett said. "We hope this arrangement continues on for future years and will continue to work with VicRoads to maintain not only this partnership but to ensure that the School Crossing Program continues to meet the needs of our community." Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the school crossing supervisor program was a shared responsibility between state and local governments, "and we need to work together to ensure its success." "We've provided more than $1 million to the City of Casey as part of a fair and equal 50/50 share of the actual program costs," he said.
Cranny’s medal detectors By Brendan Rees Cranbourne Little Athletics were all smiles after returning home with 18 medals from the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships earlier this month. Cranbourne was one of 89 Little Athletics Centres that competed in the competition, which was held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park on March 10-11. Agostino Cecilia took out three gold medals in the under-nine 100 and 200 metre runs as well as high jump. Keenan O’Hanlon snagged gold in the under-15 long jump and triple jump, and narrowly missed third place in the 100m in his final 100 metre run. Shahd Mohamed also won gold by smashing the 400 metre run. She also bagged a silver medal in the 200 metre run for the under-15 events. Nancy Agostino fought hard in three events before bringing home gold in triple jump in the girls under-13. In the Multi Class Athletes section (athletes with disabilities), Teagan James snagged two gold medals in the 800 metre run and long jump, as well as two silver medals in the shot put and 100 metre run events in the girls 9-12. It was the first time the multiclass teams have been able to compete at Albert Park, who took home five medals. Cranbourne came fourth in the medal tally, coming home with nine gold, four silver and five bronze medals. Cranbourne Little Athletics president Michelle Baxter-Hanna said she was impressed with the efforts all athletes who competed. “I cannot express how proud I am of our athletes as well as the parents who help out on the track at these events,” she said. “We are extremely proud as a club of the opportunities we have given these kids to be involved in a sport.”

As Dollar Curtains and Blinds Marketing Manager Danielle Crosby explained, curtains are back in a big way. "In recent years curtains have had a facelift with our sleek and contemporary, Wavefold curtains," Danielle said. "These curtains are unique in that they drape with a smooth continuous wave effect creating a relaxed and elegant look. The floating fabric adds softness and warmth to a room, dramatically transforming any space." Best designed to hang the full length of windows, Danielle advised that floor to ceiling
curtains are a must. "Hanging curtains as high as possible creates the illusion of height to a room, making windows look bigger and rooms feel more spacious, so it's no surprise they are becoming more and more popular in Australian homes," she said. "Curtains ensure complete light control, privacy and most importantly thermal insulation. They are the most popular choice for homeowners interested in a more energy efficient home that's warmer in winter and can help save on their power bills. Curtains help to keep the chills out and the warmth in!" Danielle also suggested that curtains should also be combined with pelmets to en-
sure ideal window covering solutions to insulate windows. "This combination can preserve as much as 20% of heat in your home," she said. Hampton Park LJ Hooker Hampton Park named on national ranking Call the No. 1 LJ Hooker Office in Victoria for all your Real Estate needs LJ Hooker Hampton Park has again cemented its position in the real estate industry’s pre-eminent rankings, this year being named the 32nd best performing sales agency in Australia by industry publication REB (Real Estate Business Online).
CoreLogic Data showed the median house price in Hampton Park had risen 20.4 percent over the past 12 months (to $487,000) whilst units rose 14.6 per cent ($370,000). “The cash rate remained unchanged over 2017 and that has encouraged both owner-occupants and investors to compete in the marketplace, placing pressure on property prices,” Mr Deo said.

The office was last in the ranking in 2016 ranking in at number 42.
“Being named in the Top 50 best real estate offices in the country is a vast achievement for LJ Hooker Hampton Park and is a testament to the offices commitment to their local community,” Mr Hyde said.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Tasty tale of a saucy star By Rebecca Skilton Don’t be fooled by the name. This business is anything but grumpy. Based in Cranbourne East, Grumpy Gary’s is the manufacturer and distributor of awardwinning, natural, handcrafted hot sauces. The exciting new kid on the block taking the chilli world by storm, Grumpy Gary’s is 100 per cent Australian, home-made and the absolute joy and passion of the Muhar family. “It started about four years back when I was working my full-time job,” Grumpy Gary himself, Gary Muhar, explained. “I used to make some hot sauces on the weekend just for myself and I would take them to work to spice up my food. “People started trying the hot sauce from my lunch and began asking ‘what was that hot sauce you had two weeks back?’ ... So I started keeping a record of what I was making and then people started buying and the orders grew. “I continued my full-time work for about a year and a half but (I couldn’t) keep both up and I thought; ‘That’s it, chilli wins!’” Struggling to handle all aspects of the Grumpy Gary’s business alone, Gary’s eldest daughter Nancy was the next to join the chilli venture. The 28-year-old left her full-time position as a nurse to become Grumpy Gary’s national sales manager. “Together Nancy and I were both (putting in) 100 per cent and trying to squeeze 110 per cent out of what we were doing,” Gary said. “So we turned to (my wife Archna and 22-year-old daughter Sabina) and said ‘Guys come on, help us out, we are drowning.’ “That’s when my wife quit her full-time work and she jumped into Grump Gary’s fulltime. She’s now looking after the back of house work. She is basically the brain behind Grumpy Gary’s that makes it function so efficiently. “And then we have Sabina. She’s looking after our social media and our branding. So all that you see on the Grumpy Gary’s website or social media, she’s the person behind it. She’s the one who designs our logos - every graphic you see is designed by Sabina.” Despite having little business training between them, the Muhars joined forces to bring their passion to life; a move that now sees them personally produce more than 1000 bottles of nine hot sauce flavours a week. And while Grumpy Gary’s sauces are stocked in 30 locations Australia wide, customers will still find the Muhars at local and interstate markets, events and festivals, where they love watching their sauces ‘wow’ customers. “This is what we love. This is our passion. Every day we work hard but we are having a good time. Life is a holiday and we are truly blessed,” Gary said. “But you want to know what fires up the whole Grump Gary’s network? It’s the response we get from the customers. It’s the expression
Archna, Gary, Sabina and Nancy Muhar are the passionate family team behind Grumpy Gary's hot sauces. 176940 we see in the customer’s eyes when they taste my hot sauce ... their eyebrows will rise up and their eyes will widen ... It’s like WOW! So that’s what fires us.” While Grumpy Gary’s has already rocked the chilli world, the future is looking just as bright with a number of new chilli products set to enter the Grumpy Gary’s range as well as the introduction of their hottest sauce yet. “It’s all thanks to our customers,” Nancy said.
“We came to Australia 15 years ago now as migrants and the way that this country and its people have accepted us with open arms (is amazing). And now they are giving us incredible feedback about our sauces. There’s nothing better. “We’re blessed to be a part of this amazing culture and this beautiful country. Just the fact that we are able to share a little bit of our food, our culture and our story with people that have so amazingly accepted us, it’s just great.”
Pictures: ROB CAREW.
And for anyone wondering about the Grumpy Gary’s name? “When he stops doing his smile, he has this resting grumpy face!” Nancy laughed. “I mean look at me,” Gary said. “What you guys fail to see that behind this grumpy looking guy is a big smiling heart. So that’s what it is, I thought okay the family calls me grumpy, says I look grumpy but I’m not grumpy, okay so if we go on the looks Grumpy Gary is what I am ... Grumpy Gary’s Hot Sauces it is!”

Shelby flies to air force Cranbourne's Shelby Cooksley hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of her father who served in the Australian military. She was one of eighteen young Australian's from around the country who explored Defence training facilities in a week-long tour from March 5-9. The tour, which promoted the Defence Technical careers, included visits to RAAF Base Wagga, Kapooka Army Barracks in Wagga Wagga and HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point. Shelby said she's now more excited than ever to fulfil her dream and fly Navy helicopters and aeroplanes. "I've always had an interest in aviation so it was really interesting to see the different technical training facilities along the tour," she said. The tour exposed participants to the variety of technical roles and trades available within the Navy, Army and Air Force, allowing them to get up close to sophisticated equipment and experience living 'on base'. Born in South Africa, Shelby speaks Afrikaans and attended McClelland College in Frankston. She said she was inspired to join the ADF and follow in the footsteps of her father who previously served. "The lifestyle really appeals to me. You're able to learn new skills, meet new people and have so many amazing experiences. It's a very unique and exciting career path," Ms Cooksley said. The group was joined by eight career advisers and teachers, who learned about the diverse range of trades on offer in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) so they can support young Australians to make informed decisions about their futures.

Youngsters get into Easter By Brendan Rees
Isabella Condello and Cranbourne's Shelby Cooksley (right) inspect the RAAF Base at Wagga during a tour of the Defence Force's training facilities. Picture: Australian Defence Force Chief Petty Officer Daniel Freebody of the Specialist Recruiter Trades, said tradespeople in the ADF develop their skills by receiving world class training. "As a tradesperson in the ADF, you will work on some of the most technically advanced equipment and systems in the world," he said. "The work environment is varied and diverse so you'll be exposed to a broad range of experiences not available in the civilian world. "In the ADF you'll also gain leadership skills and the ability to respond to and take on challenges you never thought you were capable of," he said. The Defence Technical Scholarship tour is an initiative of the Defence White Paper 2016 focused on recruiting young Australians with science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills.
With Easter fast approaching, three year-old Seagulls at Tooradin Primary School have been enjoying an array of fun Easter activities. From decorating Easter eggs with stickers, stamps and ink to playing games - these excitable Seagulls can't wait for the Easter bunny to arrive. "They have been exploring and drawing what they wish the Easter bunny to bring them and share stories (made up or real) about why they love Easter and why they are excited for the celebrations to begin," said Three Year Old Seagulls Coordinator, Eilleen Baker. "They have been joining in playing games such as 'How many Eggs in the Basket' and 'Bunning Hopping Race' and learning the song 'Easter Bunny'." The children have embraced the spirit of Easter so much they even wear a set of bunny ears and hats during their sessions, she said. "Many children expressed their love for chocolate, hot cross buns and spending time with mum and dad to find presents and chocolate eggs." "We are even hoping that a special furry friend might visit school before the end of term," Ms Baker said.

Lynbrook's fab four titles By Hayley Wildes When thinking of a successful season, many would regard one Premiership as being just that. At Lynbrook Junior Cricket Club, they do things bigger - think four Premierships! Having fielded six teams in the DDCA's 2017/18 season, four Lakers' teams made Grand Finals and all of those tasted the ultimate success. The Under 13-1, 13-3, 15-3 and 15-4s brought Premierships home to Lynbrook in stunning style. There were match-winning performances all over the place, but it's hard to go past Ryan Blake's unbeaten 50 to steer the Under 15-3's to the flag. Kevin Clare, Junior Vice President at Lynbrook Cricket Club talked about the season and that hectic grand final day. "We've been going for 12 years and this has been the most successful year for the juniors. It's been fantastic." Clare said. "There were people running around everywhere and we hosted two of the grand finals. We had a good local turnout with a lot of the senior club getting behind the juniors - even for the away games." With the senior players supporting the juniors, there's no doubt that that connection is helping the club flourish. "There has been a really strong connection this year - that's been one of the goals to bring the two closer together and it's really worked well. We have some of the senior guys helping with coaching all the time." Clare said. With over 100 registered junior players, and another 30 Milo Cricketers, the Lakers future is certainly a bright one. "The kids actually come from far and wide;
All four Lynbrook Premiership teams with their silverware. they don't just come from the Lynbrook/Lyndhurst area." Clare said. "We have kids travelling from Berwick to come and play with the club - they're kids who may have moved away from the area but still want to have ties to the club." The club also have a host of talented female cricketers coming through the ranks - with two
girls playing key roles in the Under 13-3s Premiership; Meera Hyderabad and Hasrat Gill. Hyderabad was a key figure all season for the Under 13-3s, with her wicket-keeping prowess shining through. With so much young talent, Lynbrook have no shortage of future stars and the name Jay Singh is one to keep an eye on.
Photo: SUPPLIED Playing in the Under 13-1s, he dominated at the crease and was near impossible to get out. In 14 innings' he was only dismissed twice. Believe it or not, that's not the most impressive stat from his season. He scored 372 runs for the season with an average that beggars belief; 186. Eat your heart out, Donald Bradman.
It was all for the kids at Timbarra on Good Friday By Russell Bennett All for the kids - it’s a simple moto, and it’s one the whole community rallies around every Good Friday for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Last Friday at Timbarra Reserve in Narre Warren, sections from the local sporting community, business, and even the CFA combined to raise some much-needed funds for the RCH. Spearheaded by Troy Henson from SES Taekwondo and Little Martial Arts, a whole day of exercises was planned for the community. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time in being community focussed,” Henson said. “We’ve always advertised ourselves for many years as being a club for the community and over the past six months in particular we’ve done a lot of growth and I felt it was the right time to now step up and do something with the community. “We thought working with charities would be the best way to do that and kicking off the
Sharon Smallwood, Troy Henson and the members of the Narre Warren North CFA - including Ty Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Murray - combined for a great cause on Good Friday. 179511 year with the Good Friday Appeal, this is certainly something for the kids and it’s something that’s very close to the hearts of a lot of people.”
All up, over $2200 was raised to go towards the Good Friday Appeal. “There are a lot of kids out there that do it a lot tougher than some of the kids we get
through our doors and we certainly want to throw our weight behind that and do as much as we can to support it, and in turn let the community know that this is who we are,” Henson said. “We are a community-based club, we are here for the local community, and we want to do our best for a few charities throughout the year and this was just a great place to start.” Members of both martial arts clubs, as well as other community members, joined with some volunteers from the Narre Warren North fire brigade for a day of fun-filled activities including some which pitted the fire fighters against those from the martial arts clubs. “I know a couple of guys who’ve been part of my clubs for some time who are in the CFA and because we know they’re very community-focussed, we approached them and had a chat with them about the idea and they stood up right behind us,” Henson said, adding that the City of Casey council had also been hugely supportive in letting the reserve at Timbarra be used for the day.
Casey Masters Athletics dominates once again By Nick Creely They've done it again. The brilliant Casey Masters Athletics group have once again dominated the medal tally at the 2018 Victorian Track and Field Championships, held on 24 and 25 March in Doncaster. The Casey Masters have made a name for themselves over recent years, dominating several Masters events to bring mountains of medals to the south-east. Nine Casey Masters athletes accumulated a remarkable 29 medals, 17 of which were gold, six in silver and six in bronze. Venue manager Paul Olsson did a brilliant job, claiming three golds and one bronze in the M60-64 in his events, being the Hammer, Weight Throw, Triple Jump and 60 metres. This was followed up by the evergreen Mike Hall in the M75-79, claiming gold in six events, 60 metres, 200, 80 metre hurdles, Pole Vault, High Jump, Long Jump and silver in the 100 metres. 28 STAR NEWS

National champion Rhiannon Lester also had a great time of it, picking up golds in the 60, 100, 200 and 400 metres, as well as the Long Jump and Triple Jump, and a bronze in the Javelin and Shot Put. Shaun Taylor also picked up a gold in the 200 metres and a silver in the 100 metres. The last gold for Casey was by VMA Registar Judy Farrell, who claimed gold in her W70-74 Javelin. Pramesh Prasad picked up silver in both of his 1500 and 3000 metre walks for the M40-44 division, newcomer Arlene D'Monte got a silver in the 60 metres and bronze in the 1500 walk for the W55-59 division, and Albin Hess (silver in 3000 walk and bronze in 1500 walk) and John Hallo (bronze in 3000 walk) picked up medals in a terrific achievement. The Casey Masters Athletics group invites anyone interested to join up. They meet every Monday at 7pm at the Casey Fields Athletics Track.

REVIEW - GRAND FINAL
Panthers are champions By Nick Creely
mirably, eventually dismissing the Panthers for 229 after Lawford (4/84) bent his back to give his side a fighting chance. Heading into the final day, the Lions rolled over for 161, with Darren Pattinson ending his extraordinary comeback season with 4/29 off 13 brilliant overs, and the task was simple, score 38 runs, and the title is Dandenong's. In a fitting moment, the Panthers' champion pair, a duo that has been a beacon of hope, leadership and class for the best part of a decade, found the runs. Tom Donnell (28) and Brett Forsyth (10) ran down the runs in just 5.1 overs, with Donnell belting the ball to deep square leg to bring up the winning runs. It ends a season where the Panthers truly bounced back from last year's heartbreak, with two titles in 2017/18 making them one of the more dominant sides in recent memory. The Panthers now have three premierships next to their name, with the 2017/18 cup set to sit next to the glory of 2006/07 and 2010/11, premierships that both Pattinson and Siddle also played in.
Peter Siddle lets it fly.

Tom Donnell, Brett Forsyth, Peter Siddle, Darren Pattinson, Lincoln Edwards, Cam Forsyth, Akshat Buch, Ed Newman, Jacques Augustin, James Nanopoulos, Peter Cassidy and Jak Jowett. These are the names of champions, all etched into Dandenong history as premiership players, and as one of the great sides of the Victorian Premier Cricket modern era. Throughout what has been an extraordinary 2017/18, in which Tom Donnell's ruthless squad has built a reputation and standing that will be talked about for a long time, the Panthers have exceeded every challenge in its wake. Throwing back to the demolition of Carlton to claim the one day premiership, champion batsman Brett Forsyth declared "We're a hungry group and a hungry club, and we're always chasing titles." They've certainly played as such. Donnell's side, with its mix of exceptional young talent and dedicated veterans are a side to marvel at. And as they faced Fitzroy-Doncaster, a power club searching for its third premiership in a row over the Easter weekend, the Panthers were simply marvellous. The selectors were faced with a tough decision after former Test cricketer Peter Siddle suddenly became available for the Panthers, forcing impressive recruit Jak Jowett out of the match. It was a decision that ultimately proved inspiring, with a day one burst on Junction Oval the match winner. Siddle, with all his class and experience, shredded apart the Lions after being sent in, taking 6/45 to remove the reigning premiers for just 105. It didn't take long for Siddle to make his almighty impact known, removing opener Jack Rudd in his first over, before claiming the scalps of Matt Frith and Nat Vardi early to have the Lions 3/7 and on the back foot. Highly talented with bat or in the field, Cam Forsyth provided moments of magic in the field. His first was a catch of pure reflexes, with Vardi caught at back pad above his head with one hand. Later, Forsyth used incredible judgment to take another stunner in the outfield, removing the dangerous Trent Lawford as he looked to swing the game back. These were the moments that defined the game, and ultimately became the source of inspiration. Going in at stumps 3/119, with Lincoln Edwards and Ed Newman showing resolve to help the Panthers cross the Lions on first innings, it was just about batting time on day two and the cup was destined to make its way to Shepley Oval. Edwards finished on 56, taking his total 541 for the season, but the Lions fought back ad-

A Stingray storm strikes By Hayley Wildes In blustery conditions at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Good Friday, the Dandenong Stingrays made it two wins from two to begin their season. Taking on the Gippsland Power, the first three quarters of the game were tough and tight. It was a back and forth battle, with neither team able to gain full ascendency. The first quarter was largely dominated by the Stingrays but they were unable to make the Power pay as they struggled to convert forward forays into goals. The wind certainly played a role in their wayward kicking (seven behinds in the first quarter). Gippsland's Xavier Duursma was absolutely everywhere in the first quarter, showcasing his running ability and clean skills. The Stingrays defence frustrated the Power as their loose gobbled up everything, thwarting almost all of the Power's attacks. A Josh Wykes goal early in the second term, by way of some composed play from Irving Mosquito, had the Power just a goal down. Stingray Jai Nanscawen's first goal of the game was a beauty; a couple of running bounces through the centre of the ground and a clean finish from 30 metres out. It was a sign of things to come. Back and forth goals followed, before another Nanscawen goal. Gippsland lifted late in the quarter, but much like Dandenong in the first quarter, were unable to put their domination onto the scoreboard. The third quarter kicked off with some Mosquito magic. His running goal from a tight angle had Gippsland trailing by just four points. The third quarter was owned by Gippsland, as they held Dandenong goalless and slotted through two of their own. They started to move the ball better, able to find more space and switch the play. Dandenong did have their chances late in the quarter though, but all attacking moves seemed to find their way to the right forward

Heading into the final quarter, it was Gippsland 6.3 (39) leading Dandenong 5.8 (38). Dandenong's Mitch Riordan's ability to find the ball was impressive, whilst Jai Taylor also found plenty of the ball in the final quarter, playing a key role in transitioning smoothly into attack. trell and Gippsland's Mosquito looked to have the final term shaping up as a thrilling one. Bailey Williams, who had dominated all day for Dandenong slotted a major at the halfway point of the term to give his side a seven-point lead. From there, it was the 'Jai Nanscawen Show'. The dangerous forward, who had been buzzing around all day was simply irresistible in the final ten minutes of the game. He scored three goals in five minutes (six in total) to break the game open as the Power were un-
able to keep up with his speed and agility. Another goal to Williams after the siren saw the Stingrays post an impressive four-goal win over the Power, 11.10 (76) to 8.4 (52). Dandenong's Williams was enormous; his ability to take strong contested marks was vital both in defence and offence. As was Angus Paterson's performance; able to read the flight of the ball better than most in the windy conditions. For Gippsland, Brock Smith, Ryan Sparkes and Matthew McGannon were valiant all day.
Eagles are set to soar as they embark on life in Div 2 By Hayley Wildes There is something exciting brewing at Power Reserve. The Doveton Eagles are hell bent on proving their worth in Division 2 of the SFNL, after winning the Division 3 Premiership last year. President of the club, Shane McGrath talked about the expectations heading into the 2018 season. "We're hoping to solidify our Division 2 position and stabilise as a Division 2 club. We've worked pretty hard to get out of Division 3 - we've done it once before in 2014 and weren't quite able to go up a Division and hold it." McGrath said. "We feel like we're in a much better position this time around. We feel like the club has come a long way through a lot of hard work from a lot of people, we certainly don't intend on going backwards, put it that way." That strengthened position on-field has a lot to do with the returning Premiership stars and plenty of class added into the mix. Nick Battle has crossed from the Doves and having played TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays and VFL with Casey and Frankston, is set to have a massive 2018 for the Eagles. Talking about those who have stood out over the preseason, two names - Battle and Russell Robertson - come to mind for McGrath. "[Battle] is a gun onballer and I think he'll have a real impact on our competition - he's a running machine and got good skills to go with it." McGrath said. "Robbo [Russell Robertson] last year was very injury-riddled, he carried sore ribs for three quarters of the season and kind of limped home in the end, but he was still more than serviceable - I think he averaged five or six goals a game." "He has managed to get a preseason under his belt this year and work has allowed him to be available every week, so we're really expecting big things from him this year." With new coaches at helm; Clint Wilson (head coach) and Ryan Hendy (playing assistant coach), the Eagles boast an abundance of experience and knowledge. Wilson is well-known to the Eagles, having played in the 2013 Division 3 Premiership and 30 STAR NEWS

The 2017 Southern Football Division 3 premiers, Doveton Eagles. coached the team in 2014. His return has been welcomed. "He's got a good connection to the club and knows the playing group really well." McGrath said. "With that in mind, he's probably able to identify our weaknesses and what we need to work on. He takes his footy seriously and brings a level of expectation that hopefully we will thrive on." Wilson is excited to back with the Eagles and the opportunity to coach the team in Division 2 was enticing.

"I've been out of footy and was always going to coach again. I thought we're going up and the footy club is in a really good position, what better way to come back than to take on a Premiership side and try to be a really strong Division 2 club?" Wilson said. "We went up last time I was coach and we were underprepared and we lost half the side, so I'm really excited to see what we can do this time around." The Eagles have brought in some other handy names as they build a list glittered with
depth, in a hectic off-season that should see them make a splash. Aside from Battle and Hendy, Nathan Wilson and Peter Dye also cross over from the Doves and will add to the overall depth. Ferntree Gully midfielder Josh Henry also comes to Power Reserve, and will be jostling for a spot in the Eagles' on ball brigade. The Eagles will begin their season on Saturday 7 April, with a clash against Clayton at Meade Reserve, a side that went through the Division 1 season winless in 2017. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Cavs are on a roll By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers will be looking to continue their hot run of form after making it four wins from four last round, with all their Big V teams proving too strong for their opposition. Round 3 will see the State Championship Men take on the Blackburn Vikings at Knox Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Blackburn are without a win after two rounds and Casey should be full of confidence after a strong win over the Knox Raiders in Round 2. Two games into the season, Casey's leaders have started strongly. The likes of Ben Louis (16.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game), Brandon Polk (15 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) and Raheem Lemons (15 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) have been their usual selves. Matt Donlan, in his first season with Casey, has provided a nice offensive lift to the squad. His 13.5 points and 2 assists have been a welcome addition to the offensive arsenal of the Cavs. Taking on the winless Vikings will not be an easy task. Brendan Trewella has got off to a scorching start to his season; averaging 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Keeping him in check will be key for the Cavs. For the Division 1 Women, they will be hoping to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive against the Werribee Devils at Casey Stadium on Sunday at 3:30pm. The vastly improved Lady Cavs boast offensive firepower that they simply didn't possess last season. Tanarly Hood (14 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists) and Billie Lucas (12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds) have been exactly what Cavs fans were hoping they would be - leaders and producing a strong offensive output. The mighty Redbacks are on the march By Nick Creely Hampton Park’s gutsy Good Friday win against Springvale Districts could arguably be the most important moment in the club’s revival. There’s no secret that it’s been a horror period at Robert Booth Reserve, a time where wins have been almost non-existent in the latter stages of their time in SEFNL. But this win, which means more than just the four points for the club, is the first step back to gaining respect in the region. Joining up to the Southern Football League for 2018, the Redbacks fully understood they had to be aggressive if they wanted to make a name for themselves. The first task of the off-season, signing a new look coaching outfit, was warmly welcomed. Bringing in former coach Jason Chapple, who coached the club in a successful period from 2005 to 2007, the Redbacks immediately become aggressive in their hunt for talent. Signing some big names, such as Jackson Fry (Chelsea Heights), a group of stars from Doveton, including Michael Henry, and Lyndale’s 2016 Best and Fairest Taylor Rainey meant the Redbacks were always going to field a different squad in 2018. It had been since August of 2015, a 29 point win over Tooradin-Dalmore, that the Redbacks had last won a senior game, and a whopping seven years that both the seniors and reserves won on the same day. But not anymore. The Redbacks’ talent filled new squad fought tooth and nail to run out 11.13(79) to 10.4(64) winners over the Demons, in a standalone SFNL blockbuster to kick off the season. “It was a real contest right to the end, and on a hot day in round one, there were a lot of contests throughout the game, and it didn’t really open up, there was no real easy kicks,” Redbacks coach Jason Chapple said. “Blokes really earnt what they got, we’re rapt to get away with it (the win).” Chapple said that he hopes the win can help turn the club around, and act as a cornerstone for how they want to play their footy. “The thing is, it’s really important for the cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
Matthew will never give up There’s a saying that fits Matthew Pongracic perfectly - you haven’t failed until you’ve given up. Since starting his journey at Kooweerup as a player, Pongracic’s involvement with footy has taken him down the umpiring pathway to the point where he’s now among the most elite in the state. He was recently promoted to the VFL’s senior field umpires list for the 2018 season - a far cry from when he first umpired on the Peninsula and in the South East in 2012. But it hasn’t always been a smooth, easy journey. Far from it. Pongracic has long dreamt of umpiring in the AFL, and his recent promotion is another significant step in him realising that dream. But the hard yards he’s already been through along the way will only continue as he moves forward. He’s umpired at every level, from local juniors and seniors, to the TAC Cup, and the VFL. Although he’s been tested time and time again along the journey, his self-belief has never wavered. In reality, it’s a trait that any elite umpire needs to make it. Who’d be an umpire? The reality is, most wouldn’t dare. They’re constantly scrutinised at every level and can do no right in the eyes of some. But the reality is that footy simply would not exist without them. There’s a belief, though it’s not understood by many, that the hardest football to umpire is at local level. The critiquing comes from all corners, and not just from players and coaches. It’s often from fans standing just metres beyond the boundary. But umpires such as Pongracic know it’s part of the job - to cop it on the chin, and keep producing at their best. As they rise through the ranks, they’re critiqued by umpiring departments too - on everything from their match management, to their decision-making, to their running, their workrate, their positioning, and their bouncing. If it sounds cut-throat, it’s because it is - and it’s a levelling experience. But elite umpires such as Pongracic never stop in their relentless pursuit to take their footballing journeys as far as they can. It’s believed he has a personal best time of 6:04 for a two kilometre time-trial. It’s worth remembering - that kind of running has to be combined with elite in-game decision making. One false move, and they’re criticised from the outer. Who’d be an umpire? Matthew Pongracic would. Remember that name.

Jackson Philpin, pictured here kicking the ball in 2017, is one of few Redbacks still around as the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS club embarks on a new year journey. 167484 supporters and the club itself, the playing group’s a pretty new one - we’ve spoken about what we can do (this year), we can change the whole attitude of the club in a few good weeks, that’s how quickly it can change,” he said. “We won our first game in seniors and reserves since 2011 on the same day, so yeah, it was pretty good. “We’re just happy to get a few wins and start the year off on the right foot.” While the Redbacks have now got some glittering talent on the books, Chapple said the new blokes, combined with some extremely loyal servants, have made the club a unified place. “That’s one of the things I’m really happy
with, they’re a tight bunch of boys, after a strong and gutsy win like that, we’ve bonded even quicker - that was our focus before the game, to be honest, was to see how quickly we can bond, they’re definitely tight,” he said. “Since day one, the new recruits have really bought in, and the guys who have been there a while, and have been through what they’ve been through, have seen that. “It’s not hard to bond going to a game of footy knowing that you’re a chance, so now we’ve got that, they’re on top of the world.” “The guys coming in and have obviously helped that, so it’s all going well.” The Redbacks get the chance to move to 2-0 when they host Hallam on Saturday 14 April at Robert Booth Reserve.
Title time at Cranbourne That winning feeling continues at the Cranbourne Bowls Club. Cranbourne's six-a-side team remained undefeated for the entire season by out-bowling opposition team Burwood District by nine shots in the divisional grand final to take the premiership flag. Skip, Rob Sorensen and his team of Brian Turton and Frank Coulter played superb bowls to win by 12 shots while skip Scott Di Piazza and his team of Denis Tomlin and John Forsythe steadied the ship to ensure victory and the premiership flag. Cranbourne claimed the 2018 Division 1 sixa-side premiership with a final score of 40-31. Thursday, 5 April, 2018
