Hungry need help By Casey Neill

A world of cultures

Greater Dandenong's most vulnerable will go hungry unless Avocare can raise $100,000 in the next 90 days. Founder Trish Keilty made an impassioned plea for help online after the social enterprise's six-month quest for a new home turned up nothing. The lease on its Dandenong South warehouse is about to expire. "Finding a suitable site in the City of Greater Dandenong has proven far more difficult and far more expensive than we anticipated," she said. Every week, Avocare rescues 23 tonnes of fresh, perishable and non-perishable food items. "At our distribution warehouse, 150 people on our training and employment programs actively assist in the dissemination of the donated food and material aid," Ms Keilty said. Weekly, 125 charities in the Greater Dandenong and surrounds pick up and distribute food to struggling families and those who would otherwise go hungry. Ms Keilty, Greater Dandenong's reigning Citizen of the Year, said the food delivered was equivalent to 32,000 meals. "The cost to deliver one of our meals is just $3.30," she said. "Imagine if everyone in Dandenong could spare just $3.30. "We could reach our target." She also called out to anyone who might know of a suitable warehouse in the Dandenong area that Avocare could relocate to. Ms Keilty started Avocare in 2003. "Over the last decade the demand for our services has dramatically escalated," she said. "In the last three years demand has increased more than 40 per cent." Contact at trish@avocare.org.au or visit www.avocare.org.au to help.

Thomas Mitchell Primary students shone a light on different cultures to build understanding and respect. The Endeavour Hills school celebrated Harmony Day on Wednesday 28 March. “The purpose of Harmony Day is to strengthen our sense of belonging, respect and understanding of cultural diversity,” teacher Stephanie Mackenzie said. “Our families represent 70 countries and we speak 54 different languages at home. “Our staff represent 31 countries, and can speak 17 languages. “We teach both Indonesian and Mandarin as additional languages.” On Harmony Day, students participated in an Indigenous Australian dance workshop and performed a Sri Lankan dance at a special assembly. “Harmony Day at our school is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home - from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world,” Ms Mackenzie said. “By participating in cultural diversity activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds belong to this nation and enrich it.”

Dandenong - we’ve got this. If ever a city was well-placed to find some warehousing space to help feed the masses, then Greater Dandenong is that city. Our front page this week tells the tale of charity Avocare’s looming challenge in its fight to feed the homeless. For six months, Avocare has been struggling to find a new home, with its current Dandenong South warehouse lease about to expire. They need $100,000 in the next 90 days ... or $1000 a day, which seems hard to achieve. So it’s time to work a little media magic. Maybe there’s another way. It seems hard to believe that, somewhere in Greater Dandenong, there is not someone with some warehousing space who can help. So far, the search for that space has been a lot more difficult - and expensive - than organisers thought it might be. Yes, the premises would have to be suitable. And yes, the price would have to be right. But are we really saying that warehousing is not an area in which industrial Greater Dandenong excels? If we can’t solve it here, then forget trying to solve it anywhere in Australia. So, business, put your formidable thinking caps on and see if you can find a way forward. The alternative - that the 23 tonnes of perishables Avocare rescues each week would be wasted, and the hungry would not be fed - is unthinkable. Avocare founder Trish Kealty - Greater Dandenong’s reigning Citizen of the Year - has put out the call. Will Dandenong hear it? - Jason Beck

IN BRIEF

School porn charge By Casey Neill A Dandenong deputy principal is suspended from teaching after police charged him with child pornography offences. Quentin Paul Smith is due to face a committal mention in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday 6 July. St John's Regional College principal Tim Hogan said Victoria Police brought allegations regarding a staff member to his attention during the last week of the school term. He said that in line with school procedures and obligations under the Reportable Conduct Scheme, the staff member was immediately suspended from work.

Mr Hogan said his deputy was also referred to the Victorian Institute of Teachers (VIT) and the Commission for Children and Young People. "The staff member has had no contact with students since the school was made aware of the allegations," he said. "The college community has been notified but as the matter is now subject to legal proceedings we are unable to comment further." VIT CEO Peter Corcoran confirmed Mr Smith was suspended from teaching on Tuesday 27 March, immediately after police arrested and charged him. "VIT will monitor the Victoria Police prosecution of Mr Smith in the criminal courts," he

said. "Should he be found guilty of a sexual offence relating to a child he will be automatically disqualified from teaching in Victoria. "In the event Mr Smith is not convicted of a criminal offence, VIT may conduct an investigation to determine his fitness to teach." A spokeswoman for the Commission for Children and Young People said she could not comment on individual cases. "The commission's legislation makes it an offence to disclose information about specific cases, including whether we have received a notification of a reportable allegation," she said.

Woman dies at crash scene A car struck and killed a woman in Dandenong. The pedestrian, believed to be aged in her late fifties, was hit while crossing Stud Road about 1.05pm on Thursday 5 April. Emergency services tried to revive her but she died at the scene. The 24-year-old man behind the car that hit her stopped at the scene and was assisting police. Investigators urged anyone who witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Look out for firebugs Police are appealing for public vigilance following a "disturbing" arson spree. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Craig West said firebugs struck in Kyla Avenue, Dandenong, overnight on Saturday 31 March, into the early hours of Sunday. He said there'd been "a couple" of fires in the same location on another occasion. Sgt West said the street ran along the EastLink Trail and the arsonists set grass alight. There was no evidence of an accelerant. He described the series of fires as quite disturbing. "We're really wanting people to keep an eye out in that area," he said. Sgt West said a couple of cars were seen in the area around the time of the fires. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Book builds true understanding of war By Casey Neill

“Some perished on home soil and others struggled to survive back here in civilian life.” The Springvale War Cemetery is Victoria’s official war cemetery and is within the Springvale Botanical Cemetery grounds. Dr Sagazio said it had 612 burials and was the second largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Australia. “This cemetery, together with the war graves located within SBC, comprise the most comprehensive war graves history in Victoria,” she said. The meeting place for the Anzac Day tour is the cafe at the Clarence Reardon Centre. Victorian War Heritage is available free of charge in hard copy from the Springvale Botanical Cemetery office and electronically from smct.org.au.

A new book is exploring Springvale’s rich war heritage in time for Anzac Day. Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) is giving free copies of Victorian War Heritage to schools in the area. It will host a tour through graves in the Springvale War Cemetery and Springvale Botanical Cemetery from noon on Wednesday 25 April. Author Dr Celestina Sagazio, SMCT historian and cultural heritage manager, said researching and writing the book was a fascinating process. “There are so many moving stories of those who put their lives on the line in their individual efforts to protect Australia from attack,” she said.

“Learning about their individual heroics and struggles helps us to deepen our compassion and understanding of their sacrifices, and also enhances our admiration for their courage, resilience and commitment to public duty.” The Veterans Council of the Department of Premier and Cabinet funded the project. “Victorian citizens have been involved in wars since the nineteenth century and this booklet commemorates the war service of many individuals who participated in major conflicts,” Dr Sagazio said. “These brave Victorians, both men and women, came from various religious and cultural backgrounds and from numerous sections of our military forces. “Many died in conflict and others died later through injury or illness.

A Doveton motorcyclist will be without their bike for 30 days following Operation Nexus. The 30-year-old was among 4119 motorists nabbed speeding during the state-wide Easter operation. Police allegedly detected the rider travelling at 102km/h in a 60 zone on Heatherton Road, Noble Park, and impounded the bike. They will be summonsed to appear in court in relation to excessive speeding, unlicensed driving, displaying false plates and using an unregistered vehicle. Nexus also detected more than 550 drink and drug drivers and 352 people using their mobile phone. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was disappointing that motorists still chose to do the wrong thing when behind the wheel and risk not only their own lives but the lives of others. Operation Nexus ran from 12.01am on Thursday 29 March until 11.59pm on Monday 2 April.

Workers owed $400,000 By Casey Neill A Fair Work blitz in Dandenong recovered $400,000 in wages and found 42 per cent of businesses were breaking workplace laws. Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Kristen Hannah said the proactive compliance and education campaign audited 253 businesses. She said 23 per cent were non-compliant with record-keeping and pay slip requirements, while 26 per cent were not paying their employees correctly. Fair Work inspectors recovered $428,676 in wages and entitlements for 185 workers in the region. The campaign also led to an enforceable

A "squawk box" is broadcasting bird sounds across Harmony Square to deter seagulls. The Journal received reports in recent weeks that a $60,000 light system installed last September to tackle Dandenong's seagull plague was no longer keeping the birds at bay. But Greater Dandenong Council's city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council was satisfied with the equipment's effectiveness. "Council is currently trialling a device called a Squawk box in the Harmony Square area," he said. "This box periodically emits sounds like those made by birds that are predators of seagulls. "The purpose is to discourage seagulls from landing and staying in these areas." Mr Bosman said that if found to be effective, the method might be used in other areas

where the reflector-based system was not appropriate. Complaints about swooping seagulls causing havoc first surfaced in July last year. Ready access to food and breeding space was deemed the cause. Some Dandenong CBD workers reported being swooped while trying to get into their cars, and removing baby seagulls that had nested in their wheel arches during the day before driving home. The council installed UV exclusion systems on top of the Dandenong Civic Centre, the Drum Theatre and the Thomas and Walker streets multi-deck car parks in September. "Council also encourages other building owners in the Dandenong activity centre to take similar steps if they want to effectively and humanely manage seagull problems on their buildings," Mr Bosman said. Tullamarine Airport and the Epping Fruit Market use the same solar-operated systems.

undertaking between the Fair Work Ombudsman and a sheet metal manufacturer found to have underpaid 16 casual employees from non-English speaking backgrounds. Fair Work focused on Dandenong because it was home to a potentially vulnerable workforce, with 58.2 per cent of people from nonEnglish speaking backgrounds compared to the state average of 23.1 per cent. Ms Hannah said the campaign betterequipped businesses to ensure they were compliant with workplace laws in the future. "Non-compliant employers are now on notice that there are no excuses for further breaches," she said.

More room for apartments By Casey Neill Apartment towers need to take the place of Central Dandenong's old office spaces. Greater Dandenong Council's business group manager, Paul Kearsley, said encouraging more people to live in the centre would in turn encourage more retailers to move in. The Journal reached out to Mr Kearsley after several traders expressed concerns about commercial vacancies in the Dandenong CBD. He said that in 2016 the vacancy rate was 11 per cent in the centre "which is pretty much average for Melbourne" and that the council would take another look. "We want to see what that 11 per cent is

now," he said. "We want to see if it's significantly higher. We don't think it is." He said that one of his staff took a mini audit of Lonsdale Street and found that most vacancies related to banks. Mr Kearsley said ANZ, the Commonwealth Bank and Bank of Melbourne all moved into Dandenong Plaza. They already had facilities in the shopping and their Lonsdale Street presence was a double-up. "We're not losing them, which is the crucial thing," he said. "We're still getting a sense of turnover.

"Businesses move out but after a couple of months, new businesses are moving in." He said there were a number of empty spaces in Thomas Street. "The biggest factor of the commercial vacancies is the old tax office," he said. He said the owner had refurbished and upgraded the space but there were many new spaces with high sustainability standards available. "The older stuff over time needs to transition to residential," he said. "The value of the land becomes more for residential than offices. "Once a few start happening it will encour-

age a few others to start." Mr Kearsley said Dandenong had a very high amount of retailing, so getting people to live in the centre was a key support. "For us to attract new retail and different types of retail, that's where we have to encourage population growth," he said. "If we can get these residential towers up, that will start us on the way towards people living in the centre and buying in the centre." Spectra broke ground on a 20-storey, 56-apartment Thomas Street tower last November. In March last year, Orion International Group announced plans for a $60 million, 140-apartment block in Foster Street.

Space to share some skills By Casey Neill

Chaw Po is sharing the skills she learned through Space2b with other migrant women. The Springvale South woman has gone from trainee to trainer in less than two years. In June 2016, the Journal reported that social enterprise Space2b had brought its St Kilda-based mentoring program to Heritage Hill in Dandenong to help budding entrepreneurs to finesse and potentially monetarise their skills. "When I finished my training at Heritage Hill they invited me to go to the shop (in St Kilda)," Ms Po said. "They taught me how to run a business." She's on a disability pension so couldn't set up her own business. "At the beginning I wanted to do a business but I had no idea where to contact, so that's why I missed out," she said.

"That's why I want to encourage other ladies not to miss out like me." Ms Po is mentoring in sewing, crochet and knitting at Noble Park Community Centre. Her students are working on lavender bags, children's blankets, crochet koalas and more. "They are happy because they've never done it before, especially in this country," she said. "They had no idea where to go, what to do. "I am so happy because I want to share my experience and knowledge to other women. That's why I'm doing it."

South-East wants wings

Nobody in Ebony Rech's family has a driver's licence or a car, so clocking up her learner driver hours was a struggle. Fellow Noble Park resident Silvie Parizek leant a hand through the L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. Ebony got her licence in February. "I called my family straight away," she said. "They were screaming over the phone saying 'well done we're so proud of you'. "My mum and my Nan started crying over the phone. "Helping my Nan with the groceries is a lot easier. "Before we would always walk home from the shops with our groceries or catch public transport." Ms Parizek got involved with Dandenongbased Jesuit Social Services about three or four years ago, first as a mentor and then as a L2P volunteer. "I've supervised a number of drivers, and two successfully with getting their licence," she said. "Ebony's learnt a lot, and I've learnt a lot from her." They spent just under 60 hours together on country and city drives in different weather and traffic conditions. Ms Parizek said an hour a week was the minimum requirement. "People have got busy lives, but an hour a week, it's so rewarding for both of you," she said. "We spend an hour breezing through Facebook. Jesuit Social Services's John Wall said L2P was a state-wide VicRoads-managed initiative that followed the introduction of mandatory 120 hours driving practice for learners.

The South-East needs funding for an airport, rail links, irrigation and more, says an advocacy group. South East Melbourne (SEM) requested a meeting with Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher after the area missed out in the latest Infrastructure Australia priority projects list. SEM chair Simon McKeon said the SouthEast was home to 1.2 million people - a quarter of Melbourne's population - provided 470,000 jobs and was responsible for 20 per cent of the state's economic output. "Our population is growing so rapidly that jobs growth is falling behind population growth," he said. "It is imperative that the people and businesses of South-East Melbourne - which is one of Australia's biggest manufacturing regions and one of its fastest growing population centres - get the support that is needed." Mr McKeon said key initiatives included integrated an airport servicing the South-East, freight links and vital road upgrades, commuter and freight rail extensions, re-purposing the Port of Hastings and irrigation infrastructure to support agriculture. "These are just some elements of SEM's positive vision for this exciting and dynamic region," he said. Mr McKeon said missing out in the list was an opportunity. "Myself and representatives of the SEM board would welcome the opportunity to meet with the minister in Canberra or Melbourne to ensure he is aware of the opportunities and challenges facing Melbourne's South-East and identify a pathway that will deliver new opportunities for the region," he said.

Ebony Rech with mentor Silvie Parizek. 178844 "TAC funds it. That gets auspiced out to different local councils to run," he said. "City of Greater Dandenong passed the program onto Jesuit Social Services to run." The charity provides the vehicles and training for mentors. It desperately needs more people to sit in the passenger seat for young people aged 16 to 20 years. "We have about a six-month waiting list," he said. "We connect them with a couple of driving

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS schools initially to get some lessons and get them up to scratch. "Then we connect them with a mentor. "We just don't have enough mentors so we tend to keep them longer on professional lessons until we can find a match." Volunteers need to be aged over 25 years, hold a full licence and a Working With Children Check, and pass a police check and a VicRoads check "to make sure they don't have huge numbers of demerit points". Contact John or Rose on mentoring@jss. org.au or 9791 6596 to get involved.

LOOKING BACK

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 11 April 1918 About people I regret to chronicle the death of Mr E M Sutherland JP which occurred at his late residence Novar, Melbourne Road, Dandenong, on Saturday afternoon after a short illness. Deceased, who was 81 years of age, was amongst Dandenong's earliest residents and was the first manager at the local branch of the Commercial Bank, a position which he retained for very many years, and it was owing to his efforts in the early days that the bank gained such a prosperous connection. Mr Sutherland took an active interest in local affairs. He was chairman of the Mechanics' Institute Committee and for many years was chairman of the local bench of justices. The funeral, which was of a private nature,

took place on Sunday, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Dandenong Cemetery. Deceased leaves a widow, four sons and two daughters to mourn their loss and to them we render our deepest sympathy.

further plans for either the bowl or the arcade and theatre have yet been announced, however Mr Gordon Norris, the purchasing agent, said a full statement will be issued shortly. The last film shown was Don't make waves and Pistoleor of Red River staring Glen Ford.

9 April 1968 The Mayfair Theatre has lost curtain call The last picture show was screened at the Mayfair Theatre, Thomas Street, on 30 March and with the final curtain dropped, a further page was turned in the progressive history of our thriving city. Masaga Investments, a Melbourne development company, last week purchased the theatre and the Mayfair arcade in Thomas Street. The same company also purchased the Bowl-a-Matic building opposite for $145,000. No official statement as to renovations or

13 April 1998 Burglaries on the rise Springvale police have reported a dramatic increase in burglaries in the Noble Park, Keysborough and outer Springvale areas since the start of April. They say the rise may be due to the increased police presence in the Springvale central business district forcing burglars into peripheral areas. "People should be more vigilant and if they see suspicious activity they should not hesitate to notify police."

5 years ago 8 April 2013 Tackling the bullies A Keysborough mother who spoke out after being evicted from a Dandenong cafe for breast feeding is organising an anti-bullying forum for young people. Kalyan Ky, who gained national media attention for tweeting her disgust about her treatment at Cloud Cafe, has lined up schools, politicians and police officers to discuss bullying with teenagers in the next school term. "As a community we can be proactive on bullying. This campaign is a speak out campaign." She said standing up for herself against the cafe led to a "positive" recent conciliation meeting with the cafe's owner. After last year's incident, Ms Ky received widespread praise and empathy but also felt "stigmatised".

Dutchies serve up treats Johan and Mariette Tegrotenhuis are tightlipped about what goes into their poffertjes. "There are lots of recipes out there on the internet, but nothing comes close to what we have," Johan said. The husband and wife team have served the tiny Dutch pancakes from a small van at Dandenong Market since 2001. "I was in the building industry. I was retrenched because I was getting too old and too expensive," Johan said. "We bought the van from another lady. We just tweaked it a bit and just ran with it. "There was an opening at Dandenong Market which we grabbed with both hands. "We were determined to make this work. There were no ifs and buts. "We stuck at it and stuck at it. "It was relentless, both trying our hardest to make it work."

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL Dutch Poffertjes has built a loyal following over the 17 years since. They have customers who first tasted the poffertjes when they were children now bringing their own kids along. "We haven't changed anything - the recipe is still exactly the same," Johan said. "A lot of people appreciate that we're not changing anything." He said they cook their pancakes "with love, lots of love".

Johan and Mariette Tegrotenhuis at their van. 179460 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS "A lot of people have got no idea about how to cook them," he said. "It's the technique. Ingredients are crucial. "Temperature, timing and all these factors ... "We still cook on the original pans. It should be cooked on a single pan.

"It's like cooking a steak. "You seal your steak first and you let it rest. This applies to poffertjes." Johan said the dish was breakfast, lunch, a snack or dessert. "In the west of the Netherlands you see them everywhere," he said. "We are Dutch ourselves. "Sometimes customers say in the Dutch language 'I wonder if these people are really Dutch'." They get quite a surprise when he responds in the same tongue. "People who've never had poffertjes, I tell them 'these things are extremely addictive' and they crack up laughing," he said. "They take the first one ... "They saltiness of the butter, the sweetness of icing sugar, with maple syrup on top ... holy moly."

Greater Dandenong wants to change the way it responds to packaged liquor licence applications. At their Monday 26 March meeting, councillors decided to seek permission from the Planning Minister to put reducing harm front and centre when deciding on such applications. A South East Melbourne Councils Group (SEMCG) research project looked at the relationship between packaged liquor outlet density and increases in alcohol-related harm. It focused on links between alcohol sale and use, and family and public realm violence. "The research in this report shows that increasing packaged liquor outlet density leads to increases in assaults, family violence incidents and alcohol related chronic diseases," Cr Matthew Kirwan said. "Packaged liquor outlet density is a serious problem in Greater Dandenong and it is getting worse. "In most parts of the municipality, including where I live, packaged liquor is accessible from multiple venues for long hours within walking distance." The research recommended that the councils needed stronger policy support in planning schemes to tackle packaged liquor harm. "The successful implementation of a local

planning policy will provide greater guidance to planners when considering applications for packaged liquor licences, ensuring more informed decision-making which takes into consideration the safety, amenity, health and wellbeing of communities," a council officer report said. If the Planning Minister grants permission, the council will exhibit the proposed amendment for community feedback. Cr Kirwan said the policy would include looking at community health, wellbeing and safety in assessments; discouraging packaged liquor outlets in areas of highest social disadvantage; considering oversupply; and more. Cr Sean O'Reilly said the council didn't want to establish "too much red tape and hoops to jump through if they're unnecessary, but we do want to have a degree of harm minimisation". "We don't want to be the fun police, because most people enjoy a tipple and we want them to enjoy a tipple with relative convenience," he said. "At the same time, as a council knowing some of the damaging parts of alcohol consumption when done to excess, we want to do what we can to minimise that." The other councils involved are Bass Coast, Cardinia, Mornington Peninsula, Casey, Kingston and Frankston.

Breaking the rules RE: Four storey renewal I am perplexed why when the council has a 'Great Homes, Greater Neighbourhood' policy, that our councillors agree collectively to go against its fundamental principles which council officers are trying to uphold. In the present climate, with Labor being accused of rorting and our local councillors being heavily aligned to this arm of government, this decision is "on the nose" with our pro-development councillors supporting developers over residential amenity. Our present council should also be taking notice of its cultural and heritage committee and trying to protect our heritage buildings and sites, and only approving appropriate development for the local area that is aesthetically pleasing. We definitely don't need more cafes. They open and then close down quicker than you can blink your eyes! We don't need another 41 apartments clogging our main thoroughfares! We do not need to be a part of the 13-104

Storey Tree House series by Andy Griffith and Terry Denton! The local government area (LGA) is being ravaged by poor council decisions and lack of suitable parking. If the council has a policy to try and protect the LGA from inappropriate dwellings and its building heights, then the councillors should abide by the rules without tampering with the rules. Australians are getting a bad name worldwide. We flip and flop around making firm decisions and it would appear from recent events that some people think rules are meant to be broken! When one councillor is allowed to make decisions on a sensitive issue, when he is about to vacate his seat and ward, it smacks of nepotism when his replacement may view matters differently. Sadly, I believe our councillors have lost their way in decision matters and are dabbling in matters that are immaterial to local government. They need to lift their game! Gaye Guest, Keysborough.

War on the dance floor By Casey Neill Battles will bring people together at a hip hop Youth Week event. Breakdancing crew Kings Only is partnering with Greater Dandenong Council to bring Floor Wars to Dandenong Market from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 15 April. Dancer Chino said young people aged 12 to 25 could participate in the two versus two allstyle battle. "It basically welcomes any dancer that branches from hip hop," he said. "It's not a one-category type battle. "It's just hip hop dancing coming together." Chino would love the event to become an annual feature. "I hope to see a lot of different faces, a lot of different cultures and ages," he said. Victorian Youth Week will run from Friday 13 to Sunday 22 April. In other celebrations, Greater Dandenong will host the 2K18 April Soccer Tournament with Entrepreneurship Movement Club (EMC) at JC Mills Reserve in Dandenong from 9am to 5pm on Friday 13 April. It will also hold a Young Women's Gala Day from 9am to 3.30pm on Friday 20 April at Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough.

Panthers become champs By Nick Creely Tom Donnell, Brett Forsyth, Peter Siddle, Darren Pattinson, Lincoln Edwards, Cam Forsyth, Akshat Buch, Ed Newman, Jacques Augustin, James Nanopoulos, Peter Cassidy and Jak Jowett. These are the names of champions, all etched into Dandenong history as premiership players, and as one of the great sides of the Victorian Premier Cricket modern era. Throughout what has been an extraordinary 2017/18, in which Tom Donnell's ruthless squad has built a reputation and standing that will be talked about for a long time, the Panthers have exceeded every challenge in its wake. Throwing back to the demolition of Carlton to claim the one day premiership, champion batsman Brett Forsyth declared "We're a hungry group and a hungry club, and we're always chasing titles." They've certainly played as such. Donnell's side, with its mix of exceptional young talent and dedicated veterans are a side to marvel at. And as they faced Fitzroy-Doncaster, a power club searching for its third premiership in a row over the Easter weekend, the Panthers were simply marvellous. The selectors were faced with a tough decision after former Test cricketer Peter Siddle suddenly became available for the Panthers, forcing impressive recruit Jak Jowett out of the match. It was a decision that ultimately proved inspiring, with a day one burst on Junction Oval the match winner. Siddle, with all his class and experience, shredded apart the Lions after being sent in, taking 6/45 to remove the reigning premiers for just 105. It didn't take long for Siddle to make his almighty impact known, removing opener Jack Rudd in his first over, before claiming the scalps of Matt Frith and Nat Vardi early to have the Lions 3/7 and on the back foot. Highly talented with bat or in the field, Cam Forsyth provided moments of magic in the field. His first was a catch of pure reflexes, with Vardi caught at back pad above his head with one hand. Later, Forsyth used incredible judgment to take another stunner in the outfield, removing the dangerous Trent Lawford as he looked to swing the game back. These were the moments that defined the game, and ultimately became the source of inspiration. Going in at stumps 3/119, with Lincoln Edwards and Ed Newman showing resolve to help the Panthers cross the Lions on first innings, it was just about batting time on day two and the cup was destined to make its way to Shepley Oval. Edwards finished on 56, taking his total 541 for the season, but the Lions fought back ad-

mirably, eventually dismissing the Panthers for 229 after Lawford (4/84) bent his back to give his side a fighting chance. Heading into the final day, the Lions rolled over for 161, with Darren Pattinson ending his extraordinary comeback season with 4/29 off 13 brilliant overs, and the task was simple, score 38 runs, and the title is Dandenong's. In a fitting moment, the Panthers' champion pair, a duo that has been a beacon of hope, leadership and class for the best part of a decade, found the runs. Tom Donnell (28) and Brett Forsyth (10) ran down the runs in just 5.1 overs, with Donnell belting the ball to deep square leg to bring up the winning runs. It ends a season where the Panthers truly bounced back from last year's heartbreak, with two titles in 2017/18 making them one of the more dominant sides in recent memory. The Panthers now have three premierships next to their name, with the 2017/18 cup set to sit next to the glory of 2006/07 and 2010/11, premierships that both Pattinson and Siddle also played in.

Peter Siddle lets it fly.

Stingrays set the pace By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays continued their impressive start to the season with a comprehensive win over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday. Playing as part of a TAC Cup tripleheader, the Stingrays - who are still yet to play at home this season -now sit at 3-0, despite a gruelling opening couple of rounds. With Bailey Williams and Riley Bowman unavailable due to AFL Academy duties, which saw them take on North Melbourne’s VFL side, it meant others had to stand up for the Stingrays. And stand up they did. The team came out firing as they piled on five goals in 15 minutes. The Rebels, to their credit, fought back strongly towards the end of the quarter, trimming Dandenong’s lead to just 11 points by the opening break. But from there, it was all Dandenong. The Stingrays were superb as their attacking forays produced plenty of return on the scoreboard. A 12-minute blitz to end the second saw the Stingrays pile on six unanswered goals. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for ’Rays fans would be the team’s ability to share the load, as all six goals were scored through different avenues. It was supposed to be a challenge to cover the losses of Williams and Bowman, but Craig Black’s men had a steely resolve about them and appeared to relish the opportunity. The Stingrays headed into halftime with a 79-22 lead - outscoring the Rebels 49 points to three in the quarter. Bailey Schmidt was everywhere for the Stingrays as he dominated in the air. After halftime, the Rebels came out with some added fire in the belly and battled hard. They held the Stingrays out for the first eight minutes of the quarter, before a Jai Taylor goal broke the deadlock. Zac Foot’s third goal saw the Stingrays extend their lead to 64 points halfway through

Matthew Cottrell, pictured here recently, was important all day for the Stingrays against the Rebels. 167431 the term. With the game well and truly over, the Stingrays continued to play their game and in doing so, push the lead out with goals galore. The Stingrays’ ball movement and willingness to work for one another shone bright as the Rebels failed to find any answers in defence. With one quarter remaining, it was Dande-

nong leading 18.8 (110) to Greater Western Victoria 4.5 (29). A three-goal to one final quarter saw the Stingrays defeat the Rebels, 20.12 (132) to 5.5 (35). It was a total team effort from the Stingrays, as their offence flowed both freely and dangerously, finishing with an incredible 13 individual goalkickers, led by Zac Foot who

booted four goals. Dandenong was ruthless, scoring 15 of the final 17 goals of the game. Foot’s goal sense was on full display and provided real excitement up forward for the Stingrays, whilst Campbell Hustwaite, Matthew Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell were instrumental in setting the tone for the Rays.

Tornado Tears Sandown to shreds By Jason Adams Tornado Tears set the greyhound racing world alight on Thursday night at Sandown with an unbelievable performance on his staying debut. He sprung out of Box 1 and then set some white hot sectionals, before completing the 715-metre trip in a phenomenal time of 41.20, just half a length outside of Miata’s long standing track record of 41.17. “Mind-boggling, absolutely mind-boggling,” said Rob Britton Greyhound Training representative Peter Riley. The time ran by Tornado Tears is the fastest over the distance since Space Star went 41.26 in a heat of the 2015 RSN927 Sandown Cup. “I thought he would run out an okay ‘700’, but how can you expect that, 41.20,” Riley said. “I’ve never seen a run like that from a greyhound on debut over the distance. It’s a track record that was set by an absolute superstar in

Miata and I thought it was one of those ones that’s untouchable, just like Brett Lee’s 28.88 at Angle Park.” Although it was Tornado Tears’ first go at the staying trip, that didn’t shy punters away as he started the $1.60 favourite with strong support coming late with tab.com.au. “In his ‘500’ runs he’s always been a bit tardy away but finished off well, like the rest of his litter,” Riley said. “Greyhounds running for the first time over ‘700’ don’t run times like that.” Tornado Tears looks destined to follow in the footsteps of his litter brothers by competing at the sport’s highest level. Fernando Express and Rippin’ Sam were placegetters in the recent G1 Golden Easter Egg and G1 Association Cup at Wentworth Park respectively. “It’s an awesome litter. Fernando Express in the Egg final, Sam was up there as well, now this bloke has come out and done this,” Riley

said. Tornado Tears is now a chance to head to Perth’s Sky Racing Galaxy heats next Saturday night. The speedster’s time unsurprisingly now has him at the top of the 715-metre Speed Star standings, six lengths ahead of Rippin’ Sam’s 41.56. Payton added to the theme of fast times at Sandown on Thursday with a flying 29.19 win in the following race. She sprung out of the widest alley to lead clearly, and then set a flying 18.70 to the back split to go on and win by an easy eight-and-a-half lengths. Payton’s winning time placed her fourth on the 515m Speed Star standings, behind Elevated, Aston Dee Bee and Quick Jagger. “We’ll take ‘em on,” said her trainer Billy McMahon. “We’ll take anything on.”

Tornado Tears set a mind-boggling pace at Sandown on Thursday night, putting the greyhound racing world on notice. Picture: SUPPLIED

Last year's Southern Football Netball League Division 3 premiers, the Doveton Eagles, will be hoping for plenty of wins as they enter Division 2 in 2018. 172644

Picture: ROB CAREW

Eagles set to soar in Div 2 There is something exciting brewing at Power Reserve. The Doveton Eagles are hell bent on proving their worth in Division 2 of the SFNL, after winning the Division 3 Premiership last year. President of the club, Shane McGrath talked about the expectations heading into the 2018 season. "We're hoping to solidify our Division 2 position and stabilise as a Division 2 club. We've worked pretty hard to get out of Division 3 we've done it once before in 2014 and weren't quite able to go up a Division and hold it." McGrath said. "We feel like we're in a much better position this time around. We feel like the club has come a long way through a lot of hard work

from a lot of people, we certainly don't intend on going backwards, put it that way." That strengthened position on-field has a lot to do with the returning Premiership stars and plenty of class added into the mix. Nick Battle has crossed from the Doves and having played TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays and VFL with Casey and Frankston, is set to have a massive 2018 for the Eagles. Talking about those who have stood out over the preseason, two names - Battle and Russell Robertson - come to mind for McGrath. "[Battle] is a gun onballer and I think he'll have a real impact on our competition - he's a running machine and got good skills to go with it." McGrath said. "Robbo [Russell Robertson] last year was very injury-riddled, he carried sore ribs for

three quarters of the season and kind of limped home in the end, but he was still more than serviceable - I think he averaged five or six goals a game." "He has managed to get a preseason under his belt this year and work has allowed him to be available every week, so we're really expecting big things from him this year." With new coaches at helm; Clint Wilson (head coach) and Ryan Hendy (playing assistant coach), the Eagles boast an abundance of experience and knowledge. Wilson is well-known to the Eagles, having played in the 2013 Division 3 Premiership and coached the team in 2014. His return has been welcomed. "He's got a good connection to the club and knows the playing group really well." McGrath said.

DDCA’s finest awarded By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association ran their senior presentation on Thursday 29 March, with many great cricketers and teams rewarded for a fine 2017/18 season. Fresh off winning a premiership and the Damien Fleming Medal, Mordialloc's Ian Daniel took out the Turf 1 Champion award after a stellar season. Beaconsfield captain and star all-rounder Matt Golding took out the Wearne Honour Board for a brilliant Turf 2 season, while rising Narre Warren spinner Imran Laghmani was named the association's Most Improved Cricketer. The senior batting and bowling, as well as the premiership winners were announced throughout the night, with notable names such as Scott Phillips, Daniel Watson and Steven Spoljaric all claiming an award.

"With that in mind, he's probably able to identify our weaknesses and what we need to work on. He takes his footy seriously and brings a level of expectation that hopefully we will thrive on." Wilson is excited to back with the Eagles and the opportunity to coach the team in Division 2 was enticing. "I've been out of footy and was always going to coach again. I thought we're going up and the footy club is in a really good position, what better way to come back than to take on a Premiership side and try to be a really strong Division 2 club?" Wilson said. "We went up last time I was coach and we were underprepared and we lost half the side, so I'm really excited to see what we can do this time around."
