Home owner Jamie Moroney inspects the damage to his home after a car slammed into his master bedroom. 179673

A driver was trapped for a short time after careering his car off The Promenade in Narre Warren Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS South. 179673

The car came to rest on the bed. 179673

Mr Moroney said had it not been for his wife's roster she could have easily been killed. "Normally my wife would be lying back in bed after I'd gone to work because she is a shift worker." "There were a few stars lined up for us not to be in the house," he said. "There's an amazing bit of damage." It is the second crash on the property in recent months. Neighbours say the brick letterbox at the front was damaged by an out-ofcontrol vehicle about six months ago. The road adjoins Hillsmeade Primary School and is frequently blighted by hoons, sliding around the corner especially in wet conditions, neighbours say. Casey Council's city design and construction manager Trevor Griffin said the council

straight starting from a roundabout at Robinswood Parade. The stretch is unimpeded by traffic controls but for a set of rubber speed humps about 200 metres from the corner. A former traffic island just before the corner successfully slowed down vehicles, neighbour Chris Hyde said. The island was removed to allow buses to steer around the corner some years ago, he said. Mr Hyde heard the "whoosh" of a car as it "barrelled" down The Promenade apparently well above the 40 km/h speed limit. "It hit the kerb, and hit the fence, then there was that sickening thud," he said. "Even if there were rocks in the front yard, it wouldn't have stopped the car."

would conduct a survey of the housing estate's roads including The Promenade to "assess the need for traffic calming devices". "Council notes that the alleged cause of the (9 April) accident was due to a medical condition with the driver and was not a result of speeding or hoon behaviour." Chris Politis, a resident on the corner, described the council's response as "disappointing". "I think we might have to have a barrier there before something serious happens in the area. "If there was some sort of barrier there it could have veered the driver away from the house. "I would have thought there would have been a duty of care." The corner is at the end of a 400-metre

Residents are calling for urgent safety upgrades after an out-of-control ploughed into a family home's bedroom at high speed at The Promenade, Narre Warren South, on 9 April. The driver, a Cranbourne North man in his 40s, was said to have been overcome by a medical condition when his red Mazda missed the tight bend and launched airborne up a lawn rise into the brick home about 7.20am. He was extracted from his car wedged in rubble and the bedroom's walk-in wardrobe. He was hospitalised in a stable condition with chest injuries and grazes, and is not expected to be charged. Fortunately, none of the home's occupants were in the car's path at the time. One of the residents, a shift-work nurse, would often be sleeping off in the same bedroom at that time of morning. The owner of the house, Jamie Moroney spoke of his shock saying he had left for work just minutes before the accident. "My son rang me. He straight away freaked out because he wasn't sure that I'd left for work," he said. His son was about to have breakfast in the kitchen but luckily not injured, he said. Mr Moroney said he found the car sitting on top of his bed, adding the driver was incoherent and "didn't know what was going on". "I just wanted to get the ignition off the car," he said. "The last thing I wanted was the car to catch fire." "The roof was crashed down on top of him," he said. "So they (emergency services) had to cut the roof off and then relieve the pressure on his legs to get him out." Mr Moroney said the car took out two windows and caused extensive damage to the brick work. "There's about two metres of damage on the front lawn and then he's gone through the air," he said. "I've got a box hedge which is about close to two foot high and he hasn't touched it."

Pensioner terrified By Kyra Gillespie and Brendan Rees A group of thugs including boys from Cranbourne have been charged with aggravated home invasion after allegedly storming into a Berwick home and terrorising an elderly pensioner last weekend. Police allege ten teenagers raided a house on Michelle Drive where they stole a gaming console just before 2.30pm on Saturday, April 7. A mobile phone was also allegedly stolen from a fast food restaurant on Clyde Road a short time later. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged 10 youths following the theft and home invasion. Five boys from Cranbourne, aged 14 to16, and a 15 year-old Cranbourne North boy were among those charged. They were bailed to appear in a Children’s Court at a later date. An 18-year-old Narre Warren man was also charged and remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 9. A 13-year-old Hampton Park boy and a 16-year-old Narre Warren South boy will be charged on summons with theft related offences. Two 15-year-old Pakenham boys were also charged with aggravated home invasion and will face the Children’s Court. Disability pensioner Shelly Dean says she barricaded herself in her bedroom when the youths smashed their way into her Berwick home and allegedly bashed her autistic son. CCTV footage shows the daylight raid, where the brazen youths stormed into Ms Dean’s front yard armed with baseball bats. One young man is seen kicking the front door repeatedly shouting abuse. “I was terrified, when they first came in I thought they had guns,” Ms Dean said. “It was very very scary.” Her son’s 16-year-old girlfriend, who asked not to reveal her name, said she was holding

Shelly Dean, who suffers from progressive MS, barricaded herself in her room with her dogs when Pictures: KYRA GILLESPIE her home was attacked. 179676 the front door shut in an attempt to keep the intruders from entering. “I slammed the door in their faces and held it shut while they tried to break in,” she said. When they couldn’t get in the front, some of the youths can be seen running down the side of the house and smashing a CCTV camera while another films the rampage on a mobile phone. The youths allegedly assaulted Ms Dean’s autistic teenage son with a bat and stole a video game console and $400 cash. Ms Dean, who suffers from progressive

multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair, said she is now terrified to leave the house. “We moved here nine years ago and it’s become so bad ... This has become a really scary area,” she said. Ms Dean said she had little faith in the justice system. “They’re just going to get a slap on the wrist and end up out on the street again, what if they come back?” she said. “We want to move but because I need specialised disability housing it can take years and I can’t afford a private rental.“

to educate operators about the smoking bans. Ms Bell said no council officers had made education visits to public hospitals due to receiving "very few" smoking complaints. Star News has received a stream of complaints about smokers flouting the law and also the lack of an undercover smoking area. Monash Health security officers can "ask" smokers to smoke away from the hospital but aren't authorised to enforce the ban. On a visit to the hospital, cigarette butts were observed on the rims of exterior rubbish bins - right next to 'No Smoking' signs. Australian Medical Association president Lorraine Baker said there was an enforcement "grey zone" around the smoking ban. There was a public expectation that hospitals would enforce the ban, but the authority lay with local government officers, Dr Baker said. Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation acting state secretary Paul Gilbert said

there remained questions over who was meant to enforce the bans. "It's certainly not up to health care workers to enforce the smoking bans and we have seen a number of incidences of violence and aggression towards our members who have stepped in to point out the smoke-free areas at their workplaces. "Some hospitals have gone as far as issuing their staff with health and safety policy which prevents them from approaching smokers to avoid potential conflict." Concerns have been raised about the safety of patients and medical staff requesting smokers to comply since a surgeon died outside Box Hill Hospital in May 2017. A man has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in a Supreme Court hearing over the allegedly fatal punch on the surgeon. It was alleged that the punch was prompted by a request for the man not to smoke near the hospital's entrance.

A Berwick cafe’s former manager has been convicted for stealing thousands from the till while in the grip of a pokies addiction. Priyantha Rohana Yatawatta, 52, admitted to using false supplier invoices to steal about $5000 cash from his employer, The Main Cafe Bar Restaurant, a court heard on 9 April. He repaid that sum, though the cafe owners estimated the thefts totalled $21,000 when they confronted Yatawatta in September 2016. Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that some of the disputed ‘invoices’ had been keyed in by other employees, not Yatawatta. “We say it’s around $5000 - which he has made full admissions to.” Emigrating from Sri Lanka in 2010, Yatawatta worked at a hotel on Kangaroo Island and developed an addiction for pokies. He started work at The Main Cafe about 2014. Ms Strugnell said there was no prior criminal history in Sri Lanka, South Australia or locally. A “deeply Catholic” Yatawatta had sought counselling, hypnotherapy as well as advice from Gambler’s Help on his road to rehabilitation. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said Yatawatta - his family’s sole bread-winner - had gone “over and above” in trying to pay back the theft. He was not required to pay further compensation, Ms Spencer said. “You’ve tried very hard to make good that debt yourself, which is a sign of remorse.” The case was a clear example of the “insidious” nature of gambling, Ms Spencer said. Problem gambling from poker machines had become an “all-too common” issue before the courts. Their addictive nature led Yatawatta - who was of “otherwise good character” - to stealing from his employer. “I’m pleased that you’re getting help for your problem gambling,” Ms Spencer said. “I’m confident that with that help you can put that behind you.” Yatawatta accepted a sentence indication of a community corrections order with conviction. He was ordered to perform 150 hours of volunteer work in 12 months, and to continue his gambling-addiction counselling.

No smoker has been fined by Casey Council under a routinely-ignored smoking ban at Casey Hospital's entrances. The council's environmental health officers and local laws officers have authority to enforce the ban within four metres of public hospital entrances. Casey officers can issue official warnings or $158.57 fines, but no infringements had been issued, Casey safer communities manager Caroline Bell said. "To enforce bans within Victorian public premises (such as hospital entrances) officers need to observe individuals smoking to identify that a breach of the Tobacco Act has occurred. "It is often difficult to catch people smoking as they have often left the location before officers can attend." Casey Council officers routinely make visits to tobacco retailers, eateries, schools and pools

We need to talk about the smoking. Because a ban means a ban - and a ban that isn’t enforced is no ban at all. As a general rule, banning anything is usually a second-best solution. But it should be apparent that lifesaving hospitals and life-threatening smoking is not exactly a match made in heaven. The notorious death of a medical professional in Melbourne, through smoking-related argy-bargy, was a case in point. It seems remarkable that, with a hospital smoking ban implemented, the authorities have been unable to hand out one penalty notice. Not one. In fact, we are told, the ashtrays are strategically placed under the “no smoking“ signs - and that’s no joke. Now, it may be that the ban has not been well thought out. It may equally be that the wrong bodies have been chosen to enforce (or in this case, not enforce) it. But, frankly, we expect better - and it’s time for the powers that be to put up or shut up. So if the ban’s on, let’s see some enforcement. And if it’s not, then let’s hear no more of it ... and someone will need to take those “no smoking“ signs down. Because any medical professional will tell you that smoking can’t be a little bit banned ... any more than you can be a little bit pregnant. - Jason Beck

Riding for a future

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Sharyn Wyatt and Geoff Ablett with riders and volunteers. 179422 poured its precious funds into a new outdoor arena roof, state-of-the-art sand and fibre surface, water tanks, LED lighting and a sprinkler system. "If you saw this facility, you wouldn't want to get it knocked down for houses," Cr Ablett said. Urban development has chased Oakwood from previous homes at Waverley, Dandenong North and Narre Warren South. It settled on 100 acres in Smiths Lane 12 years ago. Next door at the time was Minta Farm, an apple orchard, Hillcrest Christian College and countryside.

Picture: GARY SISSONS

The riding school has already successfully lobbied against a Thompsons Road extension, which threatened to bisect the property. The road now cuts 10 acres off the edge of the school. The school, with its unique lessons for children, is worth fighting for, says Ms Wyatt. Such as learning to look after and take responsibility for the care of a horse. Most of all, horses are a bonding experience. They're a gentle 500 kilogram giant commanded by riders a tenth of their weight. "It's growing in popularity, absolutely. "All girls want a horse and to learn to ride." 12384085-ACM16-18

Casey mayor Geoff Ablett is saddling up to help save a 60-year-old Clyde North riding school from soaring council rates. The Oakwood Riding School's extensive paddocks, stables and under-cover arena at Smiths Lane are surrounded by suburban sprawl. The once rurally-set school is on the fringe of the urban growth zone, 100 metres from the nearest estate. If rezoned into the UGZ, its already hefty $12,000 rates bill will exponentially skyrocket. Oakwood general manager Sharyn Watt said the not-for-profit centre may be forced to pack up and move out of Casey. Ms Wyatt says it's important to keep riding opportunities so close to home for up to 100 children and riders who live in Casey and greater Melbourne each week. The school also keeps and agists about 60 horses, plus 20 school ponies. Cr Ablett said Casey can't lose what is the "jewel in the crown" of its great equestrian industry and traditions. "We have to find a way to take them out of the UGZ." One method may be to lobby the state's Planning Minister to zone the site as farmland, or otherwise classify Oakwood as an educational facility. The school with its expert instructors was a vital pathway for children to find a future in the sport, Cr Ablett said. Whether as an Olympic rider, jockey or in any of the other equestrian professions in Casey. It is a key plank in Cr Ablett's vision for Casey to be a more significant equestrian centre, complementing the state equestrian hub in Werribee. Largely volunteer-run, Oakwood recently

The much-maligned former tip near Brookland Greens estate could potentially have a shinier future as a solar farm, according to a Casey Council report. The Stevensons Road landfill in Cranbourne was described as having "excellent orientation and topography" for solar in the report tabled on 3 April. It is claimed the landfill could potentially host a 11 million Watt solar system that could supply half of the power requirements for Casey Council's buildings. A decade ago, the disused tip infamously leaked methane into adjoining homes, leading to an expensive clean-up and class action bill for Casey Council and EPA Victoria. Other potential sites include suitable rooftops on 150 Casey Council buildings and facilities and the Quarry Road landfill in Narre Warren. The report also earmarked 325 hectares of vacant high-voltage transmission corridor land that could generate solar power for 33,000 households. A solar system mounted on a shade over Bunjil Place car park could potentially supply all power needs for Casey ARC and Bunjil, the report stated. It stated the benefits of local solar investment were cheaper, renewable energy, less price volatility and new revenue streams. "Large scale solar investment is an excellent opportunity for the City of Casey and its residents." Petra Stock, senior energy analyst for the Climate Council of Australia, said former landfills were a sensible solar farm option, as well as for the extraction of utilisable gases. "It makes sense. It's land you can't necessarily use for other purposes." Renewable systems on council rooftops and land was a "win-win" that slashed costs for ratepayers, Ms Stock said.

Melody Reedman: Each time I have ever been to Casey hospital I have had to walk through toxic smoke on the way in and again on the way out but it is the arrogance of these people that is staggering to me, they stare you down daring you silently to rebuke them as they blow the disgusting plume your way! When you're faced with this kind of defiance and belligerence from a majority of smoker's it always astounds me when they bleat about being persecuted for smoking. Showing consideration for others shouldn't have to be enforced and these smoker's obviously need a huge reminder that they are members of a community. Peter Guild: As a regular visitor to different hospitals over the years some of the worst offenders are nurses and doctors. Rebecca Blackmore: There should definitely be on the spot fines for smoking within a certain amount of feet from a hospital entrance. Even smoking around the hospital grounds isn't good. I am not against anyone smoking, but it isn't fair to share second hand smoke to those who are either sick or who could get sick. People need to stop being selfish and think about other's over themselves. They wanna smoke? Do it away from others. Jai-lee Anderson: It's at EVERY hospital. Tracey Robertson: Casey has ashtrays under the no smoking signs. Julia Thomas: They should provide a smoking area outside the entrance area e.g. near the helipad with tables and chairs, why not? That way they aren't smoking near the en-

trance to the hospital or emergency department. Tony O'Hara: Agree, what is the use of having signs though if no one takes notice or police's it. Rebecca De Fina: If you don't want to be inconvenienced by a smoker. Provide a place for them to smoke. Simple! Joanne Van Rijn-Portelli: Give smokers an area to go so they can go away from the doors. Sally Mylonas: More times than I can count I've had to 'ask' ppl to move who are smoking near the entrance to Monash hospital. There's only one way in and one way out when attending respiratory clinic for my 6 year old daughter. Selfish and ignorant people. Michele Halsall: I think the only way out is for hospitals to provide smoking areas, like at least 100m from the entrance, but with a door into the hospital for patients. It is a problem at every hospital entrance, and very annoying. Arnold Van Rijn: Armadale hospital in Western Australia has sensor automatic public address message speakers at each public entrance. It basically tells smokers to smoke off the hospital site. It has stopped smokers from smoking at the entrances which was the intentions. But smokers are still smoking at other areas on site. Sue Baldizoni: I'm not a smoker, but these laws are now ridiculous! We must have the only airport in the world that doesn't provide a smoking room or area! Some pubs are even prohibited from having a smoking area outside ... Nanny State when it suits them!!! Sue Baldizoni: By the way heaps of Drs and nurses actually smoke. The best solution is to provide an area, well signed and away from the general public. Smoking is NOT illegal in Australia, but smokers are treated as though it is...

YMCA wins pools tender By Cam Lucadou-Wells YMCA Victoria will continue to manage Casey Council's three aquatic centres until at least 2024 after winning a competitive tender process. The confidential six-year contract with two optional two-year extensions covers Casey ARC, Casey RACE and Doveton Pool in the Park from 1 July 2018. The YMCA bid provided the "best financial guaranteed net lump sum return" to the council, according to a Casey report. Its cost has been kept confidential to "preserve competitive tension" in future tender processes. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said a strong emphasis was placed on "innovative and inclusive programming", in particular YMCA's 'One Casey branding strategy. "(The strategy) will assist in unifying all stadium and aquatic facilities under one single brand to provide maximum benefits to our community. "As the YMCA (is) already operating these three facilities there will be no transition impact on our users." The YMCA bid included "streamlining" staff numbers across the three centres, providing 24/7 health club access, launching Casey Care Foundation and partnering with Melbourne Football Club. Unsuccessful bids came from Belgravia Leisure Group, Blue Fit and the Richmond Football Club-owned Aligned Leisure group, which runs aquatic and health facili-

YMCA executive officer Anthony Neal said the deal built on YMCA's local partnerships in Casey over 20 years. "From our world-leading swimming lesson program to delivering the latest in virtual group fitness and supporting those less fortunate through our Casey Care Foundation, we are ready for the exciting challenge of helping more people enjoy the active, healthy lifestyle they deserve."

Turning a new leaf at Bunjil By Brendan Rees Wind trees that use turbine leaf-like blades to generate electricity could pave the way for the future of the City of Casey. Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said council would consider purchasing the trees to power the outdoor screen, lighting, and water fountain at Bunjil Place. The steel structured trees, which stand just above nine metres tall, comprise of 54 aero leaves—essentially micro wind turbines—which work at speeds as low as 4.5 miles per hour, regardless of the wind's direction. Each tree weighs two and half tonnes and generates 5,400 watts through turbine leavelike blades that spin on a vertical-axis without the need for belts or gears. Cr Stapledon said the cost for one tree was just over $71,000 but would pay for itself within three years. "They tick a number of boxes. That actually are an energy source," she said. "It doesn't have any impact on people. It is very, very effective and it actually captures all types of wind." Cr Stapledon said the trees were more than just being a renewable power source. "It's also a wonderful piece of art, very attractive and they add to the visibility that we have already at Bunjil Place," she said. Casey councillors voted at their meeting on 6 March to investigate the efficiency of the wind trees and whether to buy them for the outdoor community space at Bunjil Place. President of the Tooradin Business Association, Marlene Hargreaves said residents of Tooradin would also explore the idea of installing wind trees. "Our newsletter helps bring people forward into the future and the wind tree was one of those things," she said. "It all looks like a very exciting idea that

President of the Tooradin Business Association, Marlene Hargreaves holds a picture of a wind tree, a form of renewable energy that she says could also boost tourism in Tooradin. 179672 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS kind of fits in with the smart technology down at Bunjil." Ms Hargreaves said the trees were not only an alternative power source but would also boost tourism in Tooradin. "Many projects like it that help resolve high energy prices and create interest in the area." "Wind trees in Tooradin would be something we would like to see happen in the future as part of tourism attraction and eco-tourism attraction," she said. Cr Damien Rosario was also impressed with the concept. "I fully support this. It's so simple. I don't know how much power that screen uses outside (at Bunjil Place) but something like this that could power that and some of the other aspects are fantastic," he said. A report will come back to council in May. 1213124-EB02-16

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Esan Pilai, principal lawyer at Jay & Co Lawyers

What is something people don't know about you? That as I grew up until 27 I was a rapper/singer, songwriter and musician. In 2007 I made the top 140 in Oz Idol. What an experience that was for me.

THREE ‌ things for the kids to enjoy at the end of school holidays

What was your most memorable moment? I can verily state that at 27, having been in practice for six months, winning my first criminal law contested hearing. The positive difference I made to that young man's life was memorable before he tragically committed suicide years down the track with avid ice use . What would your last meal be? Haha, anything that my amazing mother would put together. She's a woman of many talents; and her culinary skill set is nothing short of remarkable. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? Definitely the late great Nelson Mandela's release from prison and/or Martin Luther King's speech.

Get a 30-minute taste of ballet in a performance of Coppelia by Australian Ballet Education team. It is followed by a Q&A with performers. 11am, 12 April at Selandra Community Hub, Clyde North. Bookings essential

Get up close to dingos, pythons and "off limit" animals as part of the Holiday Keeper program at Moonlit Sanctuary, Pearcedale. Again bookings are essential.

3

It's a teens-only zone on Friday the 13th after closing time at Endeavour Hills library. Games, free snacks and prizes for bestdressed. Bookings are of course essential.

What is your favourite television show? At the moment, a combination of Lucifer and also Suits. Growing up, it would have been the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Practice. What is your favourite book? I have a few, but definitely The Tibetan Book of Living & Dying. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? In no particular order, Michael Jackson, Nelson Mandela, Gough Whitlam, Hellen Keller, 2Pac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.

What has been your most embarrassing moment? Haha, I've had too many to pin point one. However, being very weak in Geography at school, I once asked the question "what is the capital of Africa?" in class. Being an ex-Haileyburian, you can only imagine the uproar. At school I ... Never belonged to any collective or group. I

Brief shows for acrobats Circus Oz will trade the big top for Bunjil Place's theatre to stage its acrobatic show Model Citizens. Daring performers complete the improbable with over-sized everyday objects such as a clothes peg, cotton reel, deck of cards and hanging underpants. The show energetically unpacks myths of modern Australia with a cheeky sense of hu-

They were selected from a series of circus masterclasses held by Circus Oz at Bunjil in recent months. Model Citizens is at Bunjil Place Theatre on 13 and 14 April.

It is a trailer full of bars, racks, cables, a punching bag and other fitness equipment. And most important, it comes with a sound system. Aptly, the gym made a recent outing during Active April at Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick. Casey ARC health and wellness coordinator Mo Mudaliar says the go-anywhere gym is part of trying to activate people outdoors. It caters for people who can't make it to gyms, getting them confident using gym equipment, Mr Mudaliar said. The gym can also be taken out to sports groups for specialised strength and conditioning.

Great Estate Agents

“The difference between a good price and a great price is a great estate agent”

JUST LISTED!

Debbie Brettoner of Harcourts Berwick (centre) with assistants Jack and Paris.

BIG WIN FOR DEBBIE Debbie Brettoner of Harcourts Berwick has taken out Berwick’s Agent of the Year for the second year running in the 2018 RateMyAgent awards. Debbie, who has been in the property industry for over 20 years, attributed her win to the hard-working and dedicated team at the Berwick agency and her two assistants, Jack and Paris. “It’s great to be recognised and it’s nice to know all your hard work pays off,” Debbie said. “But it’s not just about myself; it’s my (team) and our level of commitment to our vendors and the feedback we give them ... our vendors love the prices we achieve for them as well as the whole service we’re able to provide. “My two assistants, Jack and Paris, are brilliant, which is why the level of service we provide is much higher,” Debbie said. “It’s not just me (in the team) and vendors can always get hold of one of us so it’s great.” The RateMyAgent Awards recognise agents and agencies that have been the most consistently recommended by

customers who have sold their property in the last 12 months. The awards also honour leading agents and agencies on a city, state and national level, highlighting the most recommended across the country so sellers can make informed choices. Having lived and worked locally for over two decades, Debbie has a high appreciation and love for Berwick, as well as the services and infrastructure available throughout the busy growth corridor. “I think Berwick is a beautiful place to raise a family,” Debbie said. “It’s sensational for lifestyle with its cafes, restaurants and schools everything about Berwick I love. And working and living in Berwick is a huge advantage as I understand the town and know how it works.” Harcourts Berwick also took out Berwick’s Agency of the Year at the annual customer-driven awards, with the agency stating that it was an honour to win the awards by doing what they love most. ●

ENTERTAINMENT

Celebrating the South East Celebrating the cultural diversity of the Casey region, Nossal High School has teamed up with Berwick Rotary Club to celebrate the first South East Feast, taking place on Saturday, 21 April. In what it envisaged to become an eagerly anticipated annual community event, the South East Feast will combine and celebrate authentic cuisine and entertainment from a range of different cultural groups that make up the thriving Berwick community. Featuring locally produced gourmet products, craft beers and wines, as well as a number of entertainment options including multicultur-

al cooking demonstrations, performance artists, buskers and stage performances, Nossal High principal Roger Page promises the day will have something for everyone. “We’ll have two stages running throughout the day,” Mr Page said. “The large performance stage will be surrounded by food trucks and gourmet food sales areas ... people can watch performances from a range of local community, school and cultural bands and we will also be running some lessons, so people can try a range of cultural cooking and dancing.

“There will also be a petting zoo, face painting and amusement rides for the very young family members.” With an entry fee of only $5 per adult and child over 12 or $10 for a family, 50 per cent of the funds raised from the South East Feast will go to Youth Mental Health programs in the South East. The South East Feast will be located at Nossal High School at 100 Clyde Road in Berwick on Saturday, April 21 and will run from 10am to 4pm. For details visit nossalhs.vic.edu.au. Book tickets at https://www.trybooking.com/RPVH.

South East committee including Nossal staff, students and PFA, Rotary Club Berwick and community members are set for the upcoming South East Feast. 177658 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Three out of four ain't bad By Hayley Wildes In Casey Big V basketball action, the Division 1 Women continued their undefeated start to season, handling the Werribee Devils, 71-64. After a slow start, which saw the Devils control the game, Tarryn Wilkin (11 points, 9 rebounds) and Tanarly Hood (14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) led the Lady Cavs back into the game, but it was a total team effort with major contributions from the entire squad. Trailing by one-point heading into the final quarter, the Lady Cavs picked up the defence and held the Devils to 14 points, whilst scoring 22 of their own. Hood's game was one of leadership and determination as she played all 40 minutes, whilst Keeley Patterson's 16 points - including four triples - were crucial down the stretch. The Lady Cavs are one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the division, highlighting the massive turnaround after finishing last in 2017 with just four wins. They can match last season's win total with a win this weekend. Unfortunately for the State Championship Men, the Blackburn Vikings were too strong as they recorded their maiden win in season 2018. It was a frustrating game for the Cavs, with three starters - Mitch Chapman, Ben Louis and Matt Donlan - fouling out. Despite the 84-71 loss, there were some fine individual performances that prove, if they can pull it all together in time, this team can make some noise. Raheem Lemons (17 points, 11 rebounds), Brandon Polk (10 points, 15 rebounds) and Matt Donlan (15 points, 6 rebounds) continued their strong starts to the season. Donlan's three-point shooting is vital to

Raheem Lemons has been doing it all for Casey. 167974 the Cavs; his ability to create his own shot and shoot off the catch makes him a tough cover for any defence. Brendan Trewella, who has dominated this season for Blackburn proved to be the matchwinner for the Vikings. He was simply unstoppable, recording 25 points (10/13FG), 7 assists, 6 steals and 4 rebounds.

The Youth League Men 1 were dominant against the Coburg Giants, recording a 6592 win. In doing so, much like the Division 1 Women, they also remain undefeated. Casey had control of the game from start to finish, but a dominant 23-8 third quarter put the game beyond doubt heading into the final quarter.

Luke Beard poured in 29 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, whilst Hunter Marks continued his strong run of form with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Marks is having himself a season thus far, averaging 21.5 points - third best in the division - along with 8 rebounds. Marks and Luke Beard (20 points per game) are driving the Cavs offence to new heights this season. The Youth League Women 2 took care of business against the Werribee Devils. The win also sees them remain undefeated, setting up a clash of the titans this weekend against Pakenham, who are also yet to suffer a loss. Casey put together a strong first half to lead by 15 at the main break, but to Werribee's credit, they came out firing after half time. The Devils lifted their defensive intensity and cut the lead to just five points heading into the fourth. The fourth quarter saw the Lady Cavs turn their defence up a notch to match the Devils' third quarter effort and Werribee were unable to make inroads, with Casey running out 66-51 winners. Lauren Tuplin again showed her class with 23 points and 5 rebounds, whilst Tess Young added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in a commanding performance. There is plenty of hoops action to look forward to this weekend at Casey Stadium, with three games of BigV. On Saturday night, the State Championship Men take on the Keilor Thunder at 8pm, whilst on Sunday a Youth League 2 Women and Division 1 Women double-header kicks off from 1:30pm. The Division 1 Women also take on the Warrandyte Venom on Saturday night and the Youth League 1 Men travel to Sunbury to take on the Jets on Saturday night.

"I'm really just looking forward to stepping up behind the blocks knowing that I've got the support of my family and friends, coaching staff, but the whole of Australia behind me - I'm really looking forward to that moment." Beaver said in March. It's fair to say that support had a positive effect on Beaver as he recorded the fastest reaction time in the final and set a time of 1:57.04.

Dees run riot By Hayley Wildes

Sam Weideman's performance was full of class. 171057

The Casey Demons kicked off their 2018 VFL campaign in style over the weekend. Taking on Coburg at Piranha Park, Casey were ruthless as Sam Weideman dominated up forward as he controlled the forward line and made the most of his opportunities. With 18 AFL-listed players lining up for Casey, the class of the Demons’ was just too much for the Lions. After conceding the opening goal of the game, from there it was all one-way traffic for Casey. Weideman’s four first half goals had Casey humming along and at the main break, they led by 55 points. The composure of Angus Brayshaw (22 disposals) around the stoppages was key, as was Cam Pederson’s ability to find the ball and make the most of his game-high 26 disposals. AFL-listed players Jayden Hunt and Corey Maynard performed strongly and will be hoping for a senior re-call sooner rather than later. With many big names lining up for Casey, it was new recruit Harley Balic who made the biggest impression. Balic was electric, booting six majors and gathering 20 disposals as he ran amok through the centre and in the forward fifty. His day was highlighted by a massive screamer in the final quarter. Mitch Hannan (three goals) was impressive, as was defender Harrison Petty - pick #37 in the 2017 AFL Draft - whose performance would have warmed the hearts of Melbourne supporters. Despite the game being well in hand at heading into the final quarter, the Demons were clearly not satisfied as they continued to pile the pain on Coburg. A destructive final quarter saw the Demons

score nine goals, pushing the final margin out to triple figures. Despite Balic and Weideman combining for 11 goals, there were a further 11 individual goal kickers, highlighting the pure dominance that Casey enjoyed. This facet that was sure to have pleased coach Jade Rawlings, who recorded a 107-point victory in his first game as head coach of Casey - against the team he coached a decade ago. Coburg’s Ryan Exon, Lochlan Dickson and Nicholas Mellington battled valiantly as they tried their best to put up some resistance against the Casey wave that engulfed the Lions. The final score of Coburg 11.7 (73) to Casey 28.12 (180) reflected the Demons’ absolute dominance on the day.

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays continued their impressive start to the season with a comprehensive win over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels at Bendigo's Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday. Playing as part of a TAC Cup triple-header, the Stingrays - who are still yet to play at home this season -now sit at 3-0, despite a gruelling opening couple of rounds. With Bailey Williams and Riley Bowman unavailable due to AFL Academy duties, which saw them take on North Melbourne's VFL side, it meant others had to stand up for the Stingrays. And stand up they did. The team came out firing as they piled on five goals in 15 minutes. The Rebels, to their credit, fought back strongly towards the end of the quarter, trimming Dandenong's lead to just 11 points by the opening break. But from there, it was all Dandenong. The Stingrays were superb as their attacking forays produced plenty of return on the scoreboard. A 12-minute blitz to end the second quarter saw the Stingrays pile on six unanswered goals. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for 'Rays fans would be the team's ability to share the load, as all six goals were scored through different avenues. It was supposed to be a challenge to cover the losses of Williams and Bowman, but Craig Black's men had a steely resolve about them and appeared to relish the opportunity. The Stingrays headed into halftime with a 79-22 lead - outscoring the Rebels 49 points to three in the quarter. Bailey Schmidt was everywhere for the Stingrays as he dominated in the air. After halftime, the Rebels came out with some added fire in the belly and battled hard. They held the Stingrays out for the first eight minutes of the quarter, before a Jai Taylor goal broke the deadlock. Zac Foot's third goal saw the Stingrays extend their lead to 64 points halfway through the term. With the game well and truly over, the Stingrays continued to play their game and in

The Stingrays ball movement and willingness to work for one another shone bright as the Rebels failed to find any answers in defence. With one quarter remaining, it was Dandenong leading 18.8 (110) to Greater Western Victoria 4.5 (29). A three-goal to one final quarter saw the Stingrays defeat the Rebels, 20.12 (132) to 5.5 (35). It was a total team effort from the Stingrays, as their offence flowed both freely and dangerously, finishing with an incredible 13 individual goalkickers, led by Zac Foot who booted four goals. Dandenong was ruthless, scoring 15 of the final 17 goals of the game. Foot's goal sense was on full display and provided plenty of excitement up forward for the Stingrays, whilst Campbell Hustwaite, Matthew Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell were instrumental in setting the tone for the Stingrays. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Wickers are just too good By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 1 Too slick, too fast, too good. Nothing has really changed for reigning premiers Berwick, despite them not being at their absolute best to start the season. The Eagles brought their best intensity early to Saturday's 'Battle of the Creek' clash at Edwin Flack Reserve, and within five seconds of the ball being thrown in the air, they had a perfect chance to silence the strong home crowd, and immediately put the reigning premiers under the pump. Highly touted recruit Nathan Langley marked the ball on the lead with the first centre clearance, but his set shot never looked likely, beginning an afternoon where the Eagles wasted opportunities, and where Langley had fleeting moments but was unable to capitalize. The Wickers were full of running, and with Madi Andrews prolific early with his incredible vision by foot, the home side looked dangerous going forward. Andrew Morozoff found the opening goal for the home side courtesy of a beautiful set shot from 40 out, and from there, the Wickers began to gain the ascendency. Despite some searing runs from Jimmy Munro, and some excellent work by champion ruckman Scott Meyer, the Wickers' midfield were on top, and running in waves, as Andrews kicked a brilliant goal on the left from 40 moments after several wasted chances on the other end. As the Wickers held an 11-point advantage nearing quarter time, a moment of magic had the crowd on their feet. A brave and skilful contested mark running back with the flight from sharpshooter Brody Connelly gave the Wickers a goal as the siren blared to end the quarter. From there, Travis Tuck's midfield dominance and ability to drift forward was pivotal, in a blistering second quarter from the high profile recruit seeing the margin skip out to 31 points at half time. The Eagles were brave in the second half, but again, wayward inaccuracy resulted in a 2.5 to 1.2 quarter, and despite slashing the margin all the way to 22 points, the wastefulness was always going to bite them back. As Wickers coach Stewart Kemperman said, it was pleasing to run away with a 44-point win, 14.15(99) to 7.13(55), in a scintillating five goal burst in the final term. "It was good to get the result, but probably not the method we wanted to follow - we just build on that and move into Narre," he said. "There's a bit to work on, and some tidying up- we need to improve on what we put out on the weekend." Down at Starling Road, Officer emerged as the round's biggest winner, absolutely dismantling the struggling Doveton to the tune of 92 points at home on Saturday, in a mighty statement of the Kangaroos' intentions for 2018. Adding to that, the Kangaroos had a whopping 41 shots, a far cry from 2017 where they averaged just less than 73 points a match. In fact, the Doves actually settled quicker than the home side, with an incredible long range goal from Alex Mastromanno giving the visitors the opening goal and some needed momentum. But it was a brilliant piece of bravery that got the Kangaroos going, right on quarter time as Charles' side threatened to open up the game. A stellar contested mark at the 29th minute mark from Matthew Clarke (six goals) was duly put through, pegging the margin back to six points at quarter time. From there, it was an utter rout, and one that is sure to draw the attention of opposition clubs. With the Doves kicking just six more goals for the entire contest, Doug Koop's men clicked into gear, taking control of the midfield and using the ball cleanly going inside 50, racing out to a match winning lead of 35 points. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Jack Toner is pumped after kicking a vital goal for Narre Warren on Saturday. 179623 Not content with just the stock standard win, Koop's chargers completely dominated, running in waves, feeding an attacking side with silver service to kick a further 14.8 to 5.5 in the second half, running out 23.18(156) to 9.10(64) winners. Down at Casey Fields, all Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners could probably do is breathe a sigh of relief that they were able to walk away with an opening round victory. In incredible circumstances, Cranbourne kicked nine straight behinds in the opening term before a Ryan Jones dribbler got the home side on the board. It proved crucial in the end, with the Eagles kicking a horrid 10.22 to the Magpies' more accurate 15.8 to gift Shinners a perfect start to his return as coach. There was a worrying moment in the second term, with Cranbourne's Nick Darbyshire collapsing on the field, pausing the game for almost 15 minutes as medical assistance rushed on the field. The delay in play certainly helped Shinners' side, who were breaking the lines superbly with raw pace and energy, and opened up a 23-point advantage after more horror goal kicking plagued the Eagles. It was too little too late for the Eagles in the final term, finally finding their kicking boots after being at one stage 4.18 to kick 6.4 in the final term to peg the margin back to 16 points at full time, 10.22(82) to 15.8(98) "For the first round of the year, and to play Cranbourne and to play on the main ground, it was really good," Magpies coach Matt Shinners said. "It was probably unfortunate that the opposition didn't kick straight, but we had a lot of the ball. The Magpies fielded a younger looking side, and Shinners was pleased that they took the on the challenge and rallied behind the senior leaders. "I was happy in our first game that we had plenty of young kids playing, and that'll hold them in good stead," he said. "But it was a nice test on a hot day, and we got through pretty well." In the final game of the season opening round, an injury ravaged Tooradin-Dalmore withstood a late Pakenham charge to claim the four points under lights at Toomuc Reserve., The Gulls had seven scoring shots in the first quarter, racing out to a 16-point lead that eventually ballooned out to 33 at half time, cutting apart the Lions with speed and efficient ball use off half back. But this lead proved pivotal as injuries took

Travis Tucks flies high to take a brilliant contested mark. 179621 a toll, with the injury of Kris Sabbatucci and a couple of head knocks resulting in concussions severely hampering the interchange rotations. And with the natural fatigue of a season opening clash, the Lions capitalized, closing in to 22 points at three quarter time after sparks from the likes of Jake Barclay, Stephen Morey (three goals) and impressive recruit Trent Wreford in the ruck. But the Gulls stood firm despite the barrage in the last quarter, with coach Lachie Gillespie admitting that his players were out of legs and

had to fight for the 13-point win, 8.8(56) to 10.9(69) after being up by as much as 26 with only 10 minutes to play. "We had some injuries, which sort of stuffed up our rotations," Gillespie said. "We were down a bloke early, and a couple of head knocks, it was always going to be tough from there without a bench, but I'm really proud of the boys for hanging tough and getting through it. "We walk away with four points, so we're happy." Thursday, 12 April, 2018

Tyler’s gift with numbers By Nick Creely Tyler Finn first learnt his craft as a budding statistician in the grandstands of the MCG, watching the mighty Hawthorn battle it out. The 13-year old Narre Warren South youngster loves his footy stats, so much so, that he gave himself the hardest task for a statistician, compiling the numbers of one of the AFL’s biggest ball magnets. “I just love tallying stats - I used to always go to Hawthorn games and watch one specific player, and follow them around and do their stats,” he said. “Last year, I did Tom Mitchell’s stats against Geelong - he racked up like 46 disposals. “I did kicks, handballs, marks, contested and uncontested possessions, tackles, inside 50’s, clearances, frees for, frees against, goals, behinds and score assists. “After the game, I have one sheet of paper with stats I counted, then I’d have another sheet of paper with the AFL Live stats, and I’d correct any stats I’d miss.” But he hardly missed a stat, and he was so impressive that he caught the eye of Cranbourne coach Steve O’Brien, also his uncle. “He had a chat with me around December, he asked me if I wanted to do the stats for the seniors, and I was so pumped and said ‘yes please’, and then he organised merchandise for me, it’s great fun,” he said. Tyler’s job is vitally important for the coach, and a hectic one, as he explains. “He’s (O’Brien) keen on the forwards hav-

ing the pressure, so he wants me to do forward tackles, marks inside the 50, inside 50’s, centre bounce and stoppage clearances, intercept marks in the backline, so it’s a fair bit,” he said. “It’s been awesome, I’m learning heaps, like the tactics, and it’s really good fun. “I’m not trying to brag, but I have some experience, and I know what inside 50’s are and stuff like that, and I find it all a bit easy.” While Tyler learns the craft of a statistician, he is a talented young footballer, who plays his junior footy in the powerful Eastern Football League and is coached by some esteemed names in junior development, and hopes to one day play in the big time. “I’m at a new club this year at Waverley Blues, last year I played at Narre South Lions,” he said. “I also go to school at Rowville Secondary College, where Darren Bewick and Mark Fisher are my coaches, and they’ve been so good with me, I’ve learnt so much. “I play my 100th game this week against East Ringwood - so it’s my first game for the club, but my 100th game of football.” “That’s one of my dreams (being a statistician), but every footballers dream is to play AFL, but if that doesn’t happen, I’d love to do stats.” But does the young man count his own stats when he plays? “Not necessarily, but I played a practice match on the weekend and Dad counted my stats - I had 19 touches, and two goals, but I wasn’t happy with my tackles, I’m normally a really good tackler.”

The Panthers show their class to kick off their season By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 1 - DIVISION 2 Devon Meadows got its Division 2 journey off to the perfect start, knocking off rivals Pearcedale in ominous fashion, 17.12(114) to 8.13(61). The arch rivals started their season off at Glover Reserve, with the Panthers heavy favourites after a brilliant pre-season. Both sides had a genuine crack early, and drew level at quarter time with two goals apiece. A burst by Troy Aust (five goals) gave the home side the break in the match, kicking 6.7 to 2.3 in the second term to take a five goal half time lead. The Panthers - who look to be a side to beat in 2018 - flexed their muscles to blow away the visitors with a powerful nine goal second half. Returning star Troy Aust was brilliant for the Panthers, Kyle Beveridge was dangerous up forward, while Mat Fletcher went well in his first game for the club after joining from Cranbourne. In a fairly tight round of footy, Hastings 24.14(158) were the biggest winners, with Crib Point 7.5(47) put through a world of pain at Thomas Barclay Oval. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 The Doveton Eagles looked right at home in

Enayte Samadi and his Doveton Eagles teammates got their Division 2 season off to an incredible start. 171303 Picture: ROB CAREW Division 2 in what was a very impressive first round win for the 2017 Division 3 Premiers. Taking on Clayton, who were a Division 1 side in 2017, the Eagles were ruthless under new head coach Clint Wilson and sent a strong message to the rest of the divsion. The new on-field recruits were on show too, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Nick Battle was involved in everything and booted three goals as his class shone through and Ryan Hendy was sublime up forward, snagging six goals. Returning Premiership players; Travis Graeske, Michael Callinan and Peter Dye (six

goals) continued where they left off last season as they powered the Eagles to a comprehensive 22.14 (146) to 6.8 (44) win. Keysborough also got off to a winning start in 2018, as they dispatched Mount Waverley with ease. 11 individual goal kickers, led by Chris Bryan and Tim Werner who kicked four each, saw Keysborough run away 23.9 (147) to 9.6 (60) winners. Jack Cole and Luke Damato were influential all day. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 1 Lyndhurst’s season got off to a flying start with a 17.19 (121) to 3.4 (22) win over Sandown at Marriott Waters Reserve. Jason Twite, Charlie Gardiner and Hugh Cullen-Scholes were impressive for Lyndhurst as Sandown had no answers for the Lightning’s slick ball movement. Sandown’s Aaron Lucas and James Tate (two goals) battled hard, but too few were had an impact on the contest for the Cobras. Dandenong were no match for Frankston at Greaves Reserve. The Dolphins were a class above the Redlegs, claiming the win, 23.13 (151) to 5.7 (37). Jayke Hopkins, Cameron Riley and Ben Rawlings were Dandenong’s best, whilst Luke Kirkland and Ben White both kicked four majors for Frankston as Hayden Anderson and Jacob Holland run amok. Lyndale were unable to get off to a winning start in 2018, as they fell to Moorabbin, 9.8 (62)

to 12.10 (82). Jayden Denmead, Nicholas Cunningham and Brian Grundy (three goals) were among the best for Lyndale, but the Pumas were unable to stop Dylan Bone (six goals). TAC CUP - GIRLS ROUND 5 The Stingrays fell to the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in a heartbreaker on Sunday. Trailing by 20 points at half time and yet to kick a goal, the Stingrays lifted in the second half as they were able to find more of the ball and get out in space. Trailing by seven points heading into the final quarter, a Shaneece Stratton goal with seven minutes remaining had the ‘Rays down by just three points. The Rebels were able to hold on in the final minutes and came away with a 4.4 (28) to 3.6 (24) win. Tyanna Smith was brilliant with two goals and looked more dangerous as the game went on. The Gippsland Power continued their impressive run of form with a 12-point win over the Bendigo Pioneers on Sunday. Nikia Webber (three goals), Emily Haeusler and Maddison Shaw were impressive for the Power as Bendigo were unable to stifle the Power’s ball movement and willingness to run. The Power lead from start to finish, eventually running out 3.4 (22) to 5.4 (34) winners to claim their third victory of the season.
