Recycling horror By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong South recycling business has been fined over the workplace death of its director's brother in 2016. AAD Services Australia Pty Limited had pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to provide a safe workplace but its culpability was at the "lower end of the scale", Victorian County Court Judge Julie Condon stated. Agron Tahiri, 34, died of significant leg injuries while alone and operating an automatic paper-and-cardboard bailer at the Cahill Street factory. His body was discovered inside the bailer by his father Bejtulla at the small family business about noon on 9 April 2016. Agron's brother Adem, 30, of Dandenong South, was the sole owner of the small family business. "Given the devastating consequences here, the remorse experienced by ... sole director Adem Tahiri ... can only be described as profound," Judge Condon said during sentencing on 9 April. "The victim impact statement ... was a moving testament to the consequences of Agron Tahiri's fateful decision." Agron had climbed through the rear doors of the bailer while the machine was running. He had apparently bypassed safety switches designed to prevent the machine running while the doors were open. After the incident, AAD Services was ordered to close the factory for a "period of hiatus". The business suffered irretrievable financial pressure and was sold. It notionally exists but is no longer operational, Judge Condon noted. Judge Condon said that though the timing was uncertain, the bailer's safety switches were bypassed and a mesh protective guard was removed around the day of Agron's death. There was no evidence before the court to justify why the switches were bypassed, Judge Condon said.
Let it snow - in Springvale Springvale will again welcome snow this winter. The award-winning Springvale Snow Fest will return to Buckingham Avenue from noon to 7pm on Sunday 29 July. The streets will be filled with snow from Mt Buller, rides, free activities, sled-pulling huskies, market and food stalls, and more. Isabelle met huskies Kanka and Togo in Multicultural Place on a pre-event scouting mission. The Journal will bring readers more details closer to the event. 178859 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
However it was an act engaged by Agron Tahiri with "undoubtedly tragic consequences for him and his family". The judge found AAD's culpability was at the "lower end of the scale", having no knowledge of the switches' bypassed. It was on the "outer limit of foreseeability" that Agron would then climb into the bailer
while by himself and in contravention of safety training organised by AAD. By pleading guilty, AAD acknowledged it was "reasonably practicable" to provide and maintain those safety features, Judge Condon said. An expert report for the prosecution stated that a lockable control isolation switch would have prevented the safety switches' bypass.
It could have been installed for less than $1000. AAD Services had no prior convictions and had pleaded guilty at an early stage, the judge noted. Each charge was punishable with a maximum fine of $1,365,030. Judge Condon fined AAD a total of $120,000.

IN BRIEF
Ice injection claim By Casey Neill A Springvale-based legal service says claims it is seeking a local ice injecting room are completely untrue. Liberal candidate for Mulgrave Maree Davenport posted the claim on her Facebook page on Thursday 12 April. She shared a video from Opposition Leader Matthew Guy regarding State Government plans for a safe drug injecting room in North Richmond. "The Springvale Monash Legal Service has called for at least one to be set up in Monash and Greater Dandenong - in Daniel Andrews'
electorate of Mulgrave," she said. SMLS executive director Kristen Wallwork said this claim was untrue. "We had a very unfruitful conversation with Ms Davenport regarding her uninformed comments and have formally requested a retraction," she said. Dr Kate Seear is a Monash University academic who has a teaching role at SMLS. She said Ms Davenport might have mistakenly attributed her individual comments to SMLS. "I'm a drug researcher," she said. "I put a submission into the Victorian drug law reform inquiry.
"I gave the submission in my own name, in favour of injecting rooms. "I made no comments about ice in my own submission. "I don't think I made any comments about specific locations either." Dr Seear said she spoke at an event a few months ago about multiple areas needing to be considered for safe injecting rooms. "I have no problem if she wants to quote me as an academic," she said. "But I'm not employed by Springvale Monash Legal Service, I'm employed by Monash University."
Good growing for Green spot on block By Casey Neill Will Green is transforming a Bangholme block into a thriving farm. The 32-year-old former chef worked in city kitchens before studying a food science and nutrition degree at Deakin University. He landed a research and development role at Chelsea bakery Temptation. His drive to work led him past the Harwood Road site he's now in the process of transforming. "This block came up for lease," he said. "I've always been really interested in gardening. "I've always wanted to do my own thing. "I thought I'd give it a go and see if I could build a market garden based on permaculture." "Permaculture is permanent agriculture. "You interplant. I'm inter-planting with fruit trees and permanent berries and perennials and I'm putting my annuals in between. "They all support each other. "They all take away different bits of the soil and they all give bits back. "They work together and they improve the soil rather than just taking out of the soil." Will said he'd always been a pretty keen gardener. "My target market is going to be cafes and restaurants, because my background is restaurants," he said. "I can grow specifically for a chef if they want me to. "Most of the suppliers, they're not the ones growing the crops. They're just wholesalers." He's got a community share program in mind for down the track. "You can buy in and get a box of vegetables every week," he said. "I'm starting to organise that now, through Facebook and stuff. "Once I get big enough, I'll try to sell to
Police are searching for this man.
Thief climbs for cash Video from a Dandenong liquor store shows a nimble thief climbing a metres-high perspex screen to reach a cash register. Police hope someone will recognise the man in the footage, taken at the Lonsdale Street store about 8.25am on Sunday 18 March. He can be seen scaling the wall before grabbing cash from the register while a staff member flees. The man is described as 20 to 30 years old and tall with a slim build. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au with any information.
Driver sprung in Springvale Police allegedly spotted a man smoking ice while he was driving in Springvale. The Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives were on the way back to the office when they allegedly saw the driver on Westall Road about 6.45am on Saturday 7 April. They said he was lighting drug paraphernalia while driving so they pulled him over and searched his car. Police seized what was believed to be cannabis and methylamphetamine, or ice, from the vehicle. They took the 33-year-old Mount Eliza man back to a police station where he returned a positive result for methylamphetamine. He is expected to be charged on summons with a range of drug and traffic-related offences.

some of the smaller supermarkets." He also hopes to involve volunteers and school groups, to share the farming experience. Will wants to turn the farm into his fulltime job. "It's very daunting," he said.
A Greater Dandenong Council candidate was convicted for failing to disclose campaign funding. Dandenong Magistrate Julie O'Donnell fined Ha Dang Quach $800 and ordered him to pay $1750 in court costs on Thursday 5 April. The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate initiated the prosecution action. Mr Quach pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to give an election campaign donation return (CDR) to Greater Dandenong Council CEO John Bennie within 40 days after the 2016 election day. Ms O'Donnell said that a conviction was appropriate given the seriousness of the offence and the considerable maximum penalty that applied. She took into account Mr Quach's prior convictions and said that despite a defence submission that his failure to submit the return was an oversight, Mr Quach's failure would be more accurately considered a "significant oversight".
But a Greater Dandenong Council business grant is helping him along. He plans to put the $8000 towards a cool room. "I have submitted a planning application for a shed, the cool room will go in there," he said.

"Large parts of the regiment were based at Dandenong drill hall," he said. "The naming of the bridge would bookend the Dandenong CBD with the Peace Memorial

Care for charity’s struggle Greater Dandenong Council will give at-risk charity Avocare "as much support and assistance as we can". The social enterprise announced through an emotional online video that it needed to raise $100,000 in the next 90 days to survive. Councillor Matthew Kirwan asked the Monday 9 April council meeting whether the council help Avocare to find a new home. The lease on its Dandenong South warehouse is about to expire and a six-month quest for another space turned up nothing. Community services director Martin Fidler said the council had contacted Avocare and would tap into its business community contacts on the charity's behalf. He said the council would also provide advice on grant programs and on co-location and partnership opportunities. "We'll continue to be in touch with Avocare
and provide as much support and assistance as we can," Mr Fidler said. Founder Trish Keilty said Avocare rescued 23 tonnes of food each week for 125 charities to distribute to people who'd otherwise go hungry. About 150 people in training and employment programs work in the Avocare warehouse. "The cost to deliver one of our meals is just $3.30," she said. Ms Keilty started Avocare in 2003. "Over the last decade the demand for our services has dramatically escalated," she said. "In the last three years demand has increased more than 40 per cent." Dandenong's Anzac Day commemorations will be a fittingly multi-cultural affair. "We're going to have a speaker from the Afghan community as part of our Anzac Day service," Dandenong Cranbourne RSL SubBranch president John Wells said. "It's entirely appropriate in 2018 that we no longer see it as a purely Anglo-Saxon occasion. "We have Sikhs marching with us. "There were Sikhs in Gallipoli on our side. They were allies in the war." Mr Wells encouraged the community to attend a service on Wednesday 25 April. "It's about a time of people volunteering to do the hard things," he said. "It's about a time of people who were developing and creating a real pride in this country and in themselves." He said Dandenong had strong physical connections to the world wars, starting with its drill hall. "That's where the big welcome homes were held," he said. "They actually had lots of fundraising celebrations in there, even one where people parked cars around the outside and shone their headlights in because there was no electricity." Mr Wells said Hemmings Park was Anzac Park for many years after World War I and The Castle and a tin shed that used to sit beside it "were used as a casualty clearing station, mainly in the Second World War, mainly to service the army camp that was up at Endeavour Hills". "The Princes Highway bridge out of the main street of Dandenong is the Peace Memorial Bridge, built after the great war," he said. See page 20 for Anzac Day service details.

A Noble Park bridge will soon be named in honour of the region's war veterans. The Heatherton Road overpass at EastLink will become known as the Gippsland Regiment Bridge. Former Dandenong mayor and retired army major Kevin Walsh led the charge to make the name happen. "In 1993 I was the guard commander for the Royal Victoria Regiment Guard to VillersBretonneux in France," he said. "I was the mayor of Dandenong. I was trying to find a link somewhere between Dandenong and Villers-Bretonneux." Mr Walsh found that the 52nd Battalion known as the Gippsland Regiment - took part in many battles in France including the now famous battle of Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day in 1918. "After the First World War the Battalion was re-raised as a part time/militia battalion in Victoria and named The Gippsland Regiment and had its headquarters in Dandenong," he said. He said it was amalgamated with the 37th Battalion in 1930 and sent to New Guinea during World War II. Mr Walsh thought a tribute 100 years on from the battle of Villers-Bretonneux would be fitting. He'll be in France himself to mark the anniversary. "I led the lobbying for EastLink. That's why that bridge was on my radar," he said. "To me, it was a logical place to have it." He was hoping to unveil the name on 25 April but will instead plan a grander commemoration around Remembrance Day or the 75th anniversary of the 52nd Battalion assault on Fortification Point, New Guinea, in December.

Virginia Trioli asked a packed Drum Theatre for a show of hands from anyone afraid to go out to a restaurant at night. "Anybody at all? One up the back," she said. "Well, that's the sense in the room." She was hosting ABC panel show Q and A's live broadcast from Dandenong on Monday 9 April. Ms Trioli's question followed audience member Patrick Stephenson asking the panel about Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton's recent claims that people were too scared of "African gangs" to go out at night. "As someone that's lived and studied in this area for a number of years, I know that I've never been too scared to go out and grab a bite," Mr Stephenson said. Panellist and Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Minister, Alan Tudge, said data showed that many people were fearful. "We do have to accept and admit that there has been a problem with crime in this state," he said. "That's the first step towards solving it. "And within Melbourne there has been an issue with crime within the South Sudanese community. "Even the South Sudanese community leaders that I've engaged with will admit that, and
want to work with the government and the police to address it." African-born commercial litigator and panellist Nyadol Nyuon said the leaders conceded ground because to defend the situation "seems as if we're dismissing someone's fear". "For the majority of African people this has been a really tough time," she said. "We've been made to feel like criminals, honestly. "I give advice to my young brothers, who are very tall six-foot boys, because I'm afraid that the three of them walking together constitute a gang. "I tell them to behave nicely. I tell them to dress nicely. "I tell them to minimise their presence in public." Ms Nyuon also said that media coverage was driving the fear. "If you've watched the television for the last few months, you've had pictures of black African young people splashed across your screen over and over again," she said. "You've been told that we're in the midst of a crisis, that, you know, we can't go to restaurants." She said this was "the opposite of the facts on the ground". She said crime figures for people born in South Sudan were at one per cent, the same as 18 months ago.
"There's not been an increase. There's no crisis," she said. The program received mixed reviews from the Greater Dandenong community. On the Journal Facebook page, Judi Miller said that "for some reason it was nothing to talk about, totally different to the usual Q and A". "Better representation of community leaders would have been better," she said. Gaye Guest questioned whether the audience members lived in Greater Dandenong. "If we had true local representation on the panel it would have been far better," she said. "Not panel members from other electorates who wouldn't know what it was like to live, work or socialise in the City of Greater Dandenong." Also on the panel was Shadow Justice Minister, Hotham MP and former Greater Dandenong Mayor Clare O'Neil, award-winning journalist Andrew Rule, and Victorian Police Commander Stuart Bateson. Deb Isme said she and her cousin were among the audience members, and they both lived in Dandenong. Robert Roe said the show was great. "Some important issues discussed and the panel were informative and generally debating well," he said. "Some of the audience questions and comments were ill-informed and irrelevant, however."
Consumers rank your online reputation When was the last time you gave a local business or service a star rating? Whether you’ve had a great service or an absolutely bad experience, the internet rating you give a company will impact the future of their business. You’d be surprised at what an impact those online star ratings can have on the decision of other consumers to use a business. In fact, 92% of consumers read online reviews before making a decision to purchase a product or service. Businesses that achieve a star four rating or higher rating are in the most trusted group with 94% of consumers saying they would use a business with rating over four stars. For those businesses with just 1 or 2 stars, consumers speak with their feet and head for the exit with only 14% considering doing business. Online Solutions Manager, Paul Bewicke of Star Media Platform advises businesses it’s vital that they mange their online reputation by maintaining responses to both positive and negative reviews and taking steps to win customers with great service, not just in the store or job site, but also online. “80% trust reviews as much as personal recommendations,“ Mr Bewicke said. He advises business operators that it’s not just about positive reviews, but an honest mix of positive and negative. Surprisingly all positive reviews can be an issue too with 30% of consumers assuming online reviews are fake if there are no negative reviews. “It’s so important to respond quickly online. LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 18 April 1918 Dandenong State School Patriotic Fair A large and enthusiastic meeting was held in the council chambers last Friday evening to make arrangements for the patriotic fair to be held on 24 and 25 May. The chair was occupied by the head teacher Mr G Talbot, who explained that the Australian Red Cross was badly in need of funds. The meeting decided to have a fair. It was at first intended to hold the fair in the town hall, but the meeting decided that a larger hall was needed and application has been made for the drill hall. The Director of Education has been asked to open the fair, which is expected to eclipse all previous efforts. The following stalls were decided on: fancy stall, sweets, flowers, produce, refreshments
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
and cakes, mystery stall, kitchen stall and doll stall. Besides these there will be the usual sideshows. The next meeting will be held in the council chamber on 26 April.

They are part of the current Top 40 with Cinderella Rockefella, a "send up" record. It is sung by Ann and Johnny Hawker of Ed-
ward Avenue, Dandenong, who recorded their version and released it on the Australian market before the English. Away from the recording business - on the flip side, you might say - Anne Hawker is a busy devoted mother of three children aged three, two and one.
20 years ago 20 April 1998 Bag snatch Courageous bystanders recovered a woman's handbag after she was rushed by a hooded bag-snatcher at Dandenong. The 47-year-old woman was walking along a laneway off Thomas Street about 6.45pm when she was attacked. Two bystanders chased the bandit until he dropped the bag. Police said the bandit yelled abuse at his pursuers before fleeing.

15 April 2013 Green Wedge bulldoze anger Environmental groups are insisting they were not consulted before Greater Dandenong Council approved plans to bulldoze endangered green wedge vegetation to build the Dingley Bypass. The council did not publicly advertise VicRoads's proposal to remove the 0.19 hectare habitat in Westall Road Reserve prior to councillors's approval on Monday night. However, in a nod to four environmental groups who got wind of the plan and objected, the council granted third-party rights to objectors if they appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Greater Dandenong engineering services director Bruce Rendall said VicRoads presented seven options for the bypass route demonstrating that "appropriate steps" had been taken to minimise damage.
Jim Hardy Park pays dues What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s best-known street and location names. This week the Journal looks at Dandenong’s Jim Hardy Park, found where Macpherson Street, Clow Street and Foster Street East meet. Jim Hardy was born in 1913 at Warrnambool, one of eight children in a family with strong Irish heritage. His parents, Winifred and Thomas Hardy, moved several times between Warrnambool and Bacchus Marsh when he was a child. Sport and music were important elements of the Hardy family life and both have been keen interests in Jim’s own life. He left school at age 14 to become an apprentice in a barber’s shop, but during the The Great Depression he took any work he could

NAME find and eventually followed his father into the Federal Milk Company. In 1940 he left and enlisted in the Army. Jim served in the 3rd Australian Light AntiAircraft Regiment in the Middle East and also on New Guinea, where he became a member of the concert party and performed for troops. Jim was affectionately known as Crackers, a name his gun crew in Palestine first coined. In 1940, he married Anne Moylan at St
Mary’s Catholic Church in Dandenong. After the war, they settled there and for 27 years Jim worked for Westminster Carpets. His warmth and generosity, together with
his wit and humour, made him many friends around Dandenong. He was an active contributor within St Mary’s Parish, particularly with the cricket club as a player and a junior teams coach. Well into his eighties Jim was still fit and continued to devote himself to helping others, particularly through the Dandenong SubBranch of the RSL and ‘Thuruna’ Homes for the Aged. He was president of both organisations for 10 years and guided the RSL through the challenging task of relocating. Jim was a strong advocate for the RSL and its role in protecting the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families. He was named a Greater Dandenong Living Treasure before his death in 2003. - Compiled with assistance from the City of Greater Dandenong.

Des’s lifetime of giving By Casey Neill Des Custerson's family has welcomed news that a Dandenong park will soon bear his name. Greater Dandenong Councillors agreed to ask the Office of Geographic Names to rename Dawn Reserve the Des Custerson Reserve at their Monday 9 April meeting. "Des was a well-known Dandenong identity," Cr Matthew Kirwan said. He started the Chubbies Dance Band with his wife Maureen and they performed at venues in the region for 50 years, until Des was 84. The duo raised money for charities, including Dandenong and District Hospital. Des also had a long association with the St Mary's Parish and Dandenong football clubs and worked for the council for nearly 30 years. "Des and Maureen embraced the diversity of Dandenong and always welcomed new migrants to the area," Cr Kirwan said. "He was a gentle and ethical man that shared his love of Dandenong and football with his neighbours." Neil Custerson said his dad battled cancer for 20 years and died four weeks shy of his 87th birthday, in April 2016. "To have it renamed is just extremely humbling but also well-deserved for lifetime of giving," he said. He said the name was collective recognition for both parents. "My mum's family were born and bred in Dandenong," he said. "Dad really was a bit of a pioneer. "He stood up for the new migrants. "Dandenong's really become a thriving multicultural melting pot. "Back then the seeds were sewn. "A lot of people came to dad and asked for general life advice.
Des and Maureen dressed in their band attire at a dance, aged in their early eighties. "He was a great communicator on all levels, from princes to paupers." Neil and his sister Rose Custerson-Ahrens both said their dad instilled in them a respect for "new Australians". "I just find it really lovely that he's going to have that park after him because it's so diverse in Dandenong now," Ms Custerson-Ahrens said. "Dad would not have thought this in a million years, he was such a humble man." She said her mum was now in care in Kooweerup, aged 85. Cr Jim Memeti said he'd known the family since the late '70s and spent time with them in Sunset Grove. He said the council needed to look at its policy of not naming locations after living people. "The family came to me a few years ago while he was alive," Cr Memeti said.

Matthew Victor Pastor with cinematographer Matt Quattro at the Sinag Maynila Film Festival.
Filipino tale hits screens By Casey Neill A South-East Melbourne filmmaker is hitting big screens across the Philippines. Matthew Victor Pastor's full-length movie MELODRAMA / RANDOM / MELBOURNE! played in SM Cinema Manila for a week for the Sinag Maynila Film Festival. "When it came to awards night, we were nominated in best film, best director, best cinematography and best original score," he said. "We ended up taking best original score for my composer, who is a childhood friend who originally went with me to Nazareth College. "His stage name is Fergus Cronkite. "He's been my composer since back in film school." Mr Pastor, who moved from Dandenong to Hampton Park since he last spoke to the Journal, said he was nervous about the film screening. "You kind of just make films, but you don't really know what's going to happen with them," he said. "When you get acknowledged for your hard work it's an overwhelming feeling." He said MELODRAMA / RANDOM / MELBOURNE! was about a Filipino-Australian feminist documentarian "who is making a film dealing with race, gender, sexism in the context of the Asian diaspora".
"It's a film about a filmmaker making a film, which is very meta," he said. "It doesn't happen a lot in Australian feature film. "It's not really a narrative we pursue. "Another reason for the film's narrative is to reflect a part of the community that I feel needs representation. "I feel these films are important because Filipinos are the fourth largest migrant group in Australia." He hopes to bring it to Australian audiences. In May last year, the he told the Journal about hitting the red carpet at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival to promote his silent film I am Jupiter I am the Biggest Planet. That movie also tapped into his Filipino heritage. Mr Pastor has more films in the pipeline. MAGANDA! Pinoy Boy vs Milk Man will continue the narrative. "It's edited, it's in the can. We're sending that out and hoping someone wants to screen it," he said. "Also, we've done another feature film. This one is called Repent or Perish! "It's set with a Filipino conservative family against the backdrop of the same sex marriage plebiscite."
Heart disease claims the lives of thousands of Australians each year and that’s why the Heart Foundation is focusing on the importance of physical activity in reducing the prevalence and impact of the disease during its annual Heart Week being held from 29 April to 5 May. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death, killing one person every 12 minutes and accounting for nearly 30 per cent of all deaths in this country. Largely preventable, heart disease affects one in six Australians with more than one million people aged 30-65 at a high risk of having a heart attack or stroke—many of whom may not even know it. Knowing your individual risks is the first step in avoiding a heart attack or stroke and the best way to find out your overall risk is to see your doctor or health practitioner for a heart health check. While there are some risks that can’t be changed-for example - increasing age, being male, ethnic background (Indian sub-continent and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and family history, there are plenty of risk factors that can be mitigated such as smoking; high cholesterol; high blood pressure; diabetes; being inactive; being overweight; unhealthy diet; depression/isolation. Fortunately for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities, St John of God Berwick Hospital offers a range of cardiac services and specialises in the management of patients who are experiencing symptoms associated with heart failure. Along with a cardiovascular interventional laboratory, which allows cardiologists to look inside a heart and enables them to diagnose and treat heart conditions, the hospital offers cardiac/high dependency care to patients who have experienced a cardiac event such as a heart attack.
Constant support offered Belgrave Hallam Road Medical Centre has full nurse support with experienced nurses Sujatha and Helen always ready to help. Both Su and Helen assist the centre's doctors in chronic disease management and help complete care plans for patients with various medical conditions. Belgrave Hallam Road Medical Centre practice supports patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma (just to name a few!) Cash boost eases squeeze The Mordialloc Bypass will become a four-lane freeway thanks to $75 million in next month's state budget. Premier and Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews announced funding for the upgrade on Monday 9 April. He said it would remove three sets of traffic lights from the existing design. The $375 million project will connect the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens to the Dingley Bypass in Dingley Village, creating a continuous freeway from Frankston to Clayton. The new freeway will have entry and exit ramp interchanges at Springvale Road, Gov-

Here to help Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre is urging men diagnosed with prostate cancer to 'get as much information as possible from urologists and oncologists'. "Prostate cancer is now the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men (after skin cancer) and over 3000 men die from the disease every year in Australia," Mr McCahy said. "Whilst this may sound alarming, prostate cancer only accounts for about 4% of all male deaths and the average age of death is over 80 years. So prostate cancer is common, but slow growing and frequently not fatal." Mr McCahy explained that there are few specific symptoms associated with prostate cancer and the majority of men are now diagnosed after a blood test - prostate-specific antigen (PSA). "Despite its name, PSA is not that specific - infections, big benign prostates and trauma can all cause the test to be raised," he said. "But if it is higher than expected it is a warning sign that something may be going on and the best advice would be to see a urologist. Options include prostate biopsy, MRI scan or just keep an eye on things." Mr McCahy also advised of possible treatments. "If cancer is found with a biopsy, treatments include removing the prostate (radical

"This latter strategy has reduced the significant complications associated with the traditional treatments." Devine’s baseball dream By Hayley Wildes There's never a bad time to hit a home-run. But there are times when a home-run is needed more than others, and Pakenham local Emily Devine, 15, understands that better than most. Playing for Victoria in the gold medal match at the 2018 Youth Women's Australian Baseball Championships in Geelong earlier this month, Devine stepped up in the biggest of moments. With scores tied 0-0 at the midpoint of the game, with pitchers dominating proceedings, it was Devine who broke the deadlock. She didn't just break the deadlock though, she smashed it. A two-run homer that sailed over the heads of her New South Wales counterparts sent the crowd and her teammate's wild. Speaking about that hit, Devine admits she knew she'd hit it sweetly the moment it left her bat. "When I hit it, I was like, 'Oh that felt really good off the bat', and I was hoping it went over. I sprinted really hard up the first base line, and then I was realised it was a homer." Devine said. The game needed a hero and it was Devine's massive hit that proved the match-winner as Victoria claimed the Championship, 2-0. Devine who plays locally in the Dandenong Baseball Association for the Springvale Lions over the summer and Berwick Dodgers in the winter, began her baseball journey five years ago with the Pakenham Pumas after watching movies and falling in love with the game. Devine just had to try the sport and she wasn't disappointed. "It was just like what I'd seen [in the movies] and I just wanted to keep playing." Devine said. The Pakenham Pumas allowed Devine to hone her skills from a young age and were key to her development. "The Pumas were really good. They taught me well and really showed me how to play the game." Devine said. Whilst all three clubs have played a massive role in Devine becoming one of the brightest young prospects in Victoria, one particular mentor stands out.
Local baseballer, Emily Devine is making a name for herself. "Shae Lilywhite." Devine said. "She's helped me with technique, she's helped me focus on the game and she's just done so much in every aspect of the game for me." Baseball has taken her across the globe. Last July, Devine jetted off to Japan with a selection of the very best U25 Australian female baseballers. It was an experience that Devine won't soon forget.
"We all went to Japan to learn about how the Japanese play and how they train - just to really build on our skills. It was amazing." Devine said. What does the future hold for Devine in baseball? Whilst she hopes to continue to compete at the highest level possible, she also wants to focus on having fun. "I just want to keep having fun with it - I'm in love with it so much." Devine said.
Picture: SUPPLIED. "I really love the people - it's a great community and everyone helps each other out, everybody is just there for you and it's just very supportive." That community and support was evident in the lead up to the Nationals, as the Springvale Lions helped Devine tremendously with fundraising. "I would really love to thank Springvale for fundraising and helping me get to Nationals." Devine said.
Clinics for local basketballers take it to an elite level By Hayley Wildes For males and females aged between 14 and 20, there is the opportunity to be a part of an elite basketball training program in Dandenong. For those already playing basketball, Safe Lace Basketball Clinics provide an avenue for locals to improve their game in a number of areas. Loretta Batten, Director of Safe Lace Basketball, noticed a 'lack of specific training' in
the community and started the clinics in September last year. The clinics, which take place at Dandenong Basketball Stadium, focus on strength and conditioning & game skills and shooting techniques. Term two kicks off on the 26th of April and will run until the 28th of June. Every Thursday afternoon at Dandenong Basketball Stadium, Court 4, there will be two clinics; first, at 4.305.15pm is strength and conditioning and sec-
ond, at 5.15-6pm is game skills and shooting techniques. The clinics are run by Kevin Benn, a former USA college player who has trained with the Orlando Magic, has a vast amount of knowledge and is eager to pass it on those in the local community. The two clinics run back-to-back, allowing participants to work on extra training skills that basketball players need to advance, further than their regular basketball training al-
lows them to. Batten talked about the positive effects that clinics have had on those who regularly attend them. "The improvement has been noticeable - not just to us and their coaches, but to the players themselves." Batten said. "There is a real sense of achievement felt by the kids as they improve." A decade of Warrior pride The Greater Dandenong Hockey Club has never been in a stronger position - on or off the field. And in what is the clubs 10 year anniversary season, it is all coming together for the Warriors. When the Springvale Hockey Club and Dandenong Hockey Club's merged 10 years ago to form what is now the Greater Dandenong Warriors, there were challenges. It is human nature to not want to let go of your club and the merge was met with some resistance. That seems like a lifetime ago. Mark Fernandez, Men's Section, talks about the 10-year journey and getting the club right off-field in order to be competitive on-field. "Off-field success for the last 10 years was all about trying to establish the identity. For the first few years, as you can imagine, you still have those different factions trying to hang onto their previous identity." Fernandez said. "It was trying to get people to think about us being the one new club, rather than Springvale or Dandenong." "If you asked me what kind of club the Greater Dandenong Warriors resembles, it is a family club. We've got grandfathers that play in our veteran's side, fathers that play in our men's side and sons that play in the junior sides. There's that entire family focus for us." That identity and culture drove the Warriors to their best season in 2017. "Last year was probably our most successful year on the park; we played in 8 grand finals across and secured four premierships." Fernandez said.
"That really set us up for this year in targeting someone to take us to the next level - that being Matt Freeman." The appointment of Matt Freeman as Senior Men's Coach, who boasts an impressive resume, has been huge for the club. Freeman brings a wealth of experience and knowledge. He is a five-time premiership player with Waverley, two-time Best and Fairest winner in premiership years, boasts international experience in the UK and has been a member of the Australian Development Team. Fernandez talks about what welcoming a coach of Freeman's stature means to the club. "It's a massive, massive deal. Matt was a junior with one of our clubs [Springvale] about 20 years ago and he has played the last 20 years at the highest level." "Last year was his last season of Premier League Hockey and he wanted to explore the next stage of his hockey career being coaching and it's a testament to his character to invest back in our club where it all started, and we were lucky enough to be able to entice him to come back and work with us." The diversity is what makes the Greater Dandenong Warriors the club it is today. Whilst members are from all walks of life and nationalities, there is also a program to support refugees within the community. With about 250 members, the Greater Dandenong Warriors are still accepting new players for all sections across Juniors, Seniors (Men and Women) and Masters for the upcoming winter season, with no experience necessary. For more information, contact the club via; gdwhcpresident@hotmail.com

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Softball Association hosted the 2018 Under 19 Softball Victoria State Championships from the 7th to the 8th of April at Police Paddocks in Dandenong North. In what was a battle of future stars of the sport, there was action aplenty in both the men's and women's competitions. Local teams; Casey and Dandenong, mixed it with the very best teams from all over the state. In the women's Championships, Casey progressed through the pool stage and further qualifiers to make it to the Grand Final. Taking on Waverley in the Grand Final, it was a battle of the undefeated teams and the crowd had a sense of deja vu after these two teams also faced off in the 2017 Grand Final. In what was a tight game, Waverley made the most of their chances down the stretch, winning the Under 19 Women's State Championship, 5-3 - claiming back-to-back titles.

Unfortunately, Casey met a Sunshine team on a mission in the Grand Final and were unable to counterpunch the firepower Sunshine was sending down.
Sunshine's big-hitters came to play and matched the intensity of their pitchers. Sunshine eventually ran out 7-0 winners, claiming the Under 19 Men's State Championship. With both Casey teams making it through to grand finals, it is clear that the young softball talent coming through the ranks has never been better.
