Tribute to the VC By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Footy Record. All of the book's proceeds will go to the TPI Association. Mr Madden and the book's publisher Blue Sky Publishing have entirely donated their labour. Mr Madden speaks of a profound indebtedness to the TPI Association for saving his veteran father's life by helping him secure his TPI pension. He remembers how at the time the association helped lift his family from homelessness. The association is the least well-known of the veteran support groups. It ought to be regarded as the most important, helping the most disadvantaged of veterans, Mr Madden said. Four weeks out from the book's deadline, Mr Madden says he was nearly at breaking

Mr Madden will be on hand to sign copies of the book, with 60 Minutes reporter Ross Coulthart as the event's MC. In all, 120 family members representing 33 Victoria Cross recipients are expected in attendance - believed to be the largest-ever gathering of VC families. Under strict security, visitors will get the chance to view an actual Victoria Cross medal. As a further flourish, there will be fly-overs by Yakovlev Yak-52 and North American T-6 Harvard planes at 12.12pm. The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers will be launched at Bunjil Place, Narre Warren at 12pm, 21 April. point with his father critically ill and facing a quintuple heart bypass. At the same time, he was stressed about the 30 stories he still had to write. Mr Madden told his father he would give up the project to be by his bedside. His father told him to finish the project that had obsessed over for the past four years. "I want my son back," his father said. TPI Association president Michael Williams says Mr Madden's commitment has shone throughout the project. "It's been done for the right reasons." On 21 April, the book will be festively launched in a free public event at Bunjil Place's 838-seat theatre. Victoria Cross medallist Keith Payne and

At the end of a four-year labour-of-love, Berwick author Michael Madden has produced an instant classic in Australian military literature. His meticulous 420-page tome The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers is set to be launched on the eve of Anzac Day - a year that marks 100 years since the end of World War I. The book ambitiously features all of the nation's 100 Victoria Cross medal recipients over the past 130 years. Each of these soldiers is honoured with a hero-shot and a detailed account of their awarded act of extreme valour. Remarkably, Mr Madden was able to collect a current photo of each recipient's medal. He travelled the world to grave-sites and to interview 67 VC recipients or families, capturing the essence and background of each hero. "It's been done through the families - that's where it's got its power and energy from. "I wanted to make sure it wasn't just a history book - not just a list of bullet points and facts." Aside from the literary triumph, the project will have a lasting legacy in different ways. For one, some of the neglected grave-sites were discovered and are set to be restored to a fitting state. Australia's UK ambassador Alexander Downer was moved to demand the repair of Neville Howse VC's resting place, which had been condemned due to public safety concerns. In the course of the project, the Victoria Cross 'families' have been brought together. A VC Families Association spanning Australia and New Zealand has been formed. And most nobly, the book will raise the profile for the critical service The Totally and Permanently Disabled Soldiers Association of Victoria. Both book and association will be featured in a five-page special in the upcoming AFL

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk As we have in so many dawn services before, we prepare to honour the men who came before. They seem further away than ever, now, these Anzacs, these khaki men of rifle and pack who would never know the internet from their elbow. In 21st century Australia, these men of a century ago seem almost mythic now. Sometimes, they seem as removed from us as a Roman legion. And yet, they gave us our finest hour. Not at Gallipoli, that flawed and failed campaign that became synonymous with its sacrifice - but on the Western Front, when as shock troops they broke the German line and started the final push to an elusive peace. Bronzed Aussies, clean of limb, the historians are apt to say. Yet the average WWI Australian Digger was just five foot seven, and 147 pounds, for a typical 21-year-old enlistee. No supermen here - just ordinary men volunteering to deliver for King and Country. These men fought not for what they would come home to, but for what they had previously - because after so many years of war, the world they came home to would never be the same as the one they left. The real legend of Anzac is not that these men were extraordinary - quite the opposite. The true power of their deeds comes from the fact that they were ordinary men, who did extraordinary things. And that required a level of courage that a superman would never need. - Jason Beck

Blake’s top of his trade A Cranbourne welder has been named the best in the state. Chisholm TAFE student and Dandenong South worker Blake McDonald took home the Best Welder in Victoria title at the third annual welding triathlon at its Frankston campus on Saturday 14 April. The 12 competitors ranged from apprentices to professional welders and instructors. They demonstrated their skills in three timed events designed to showcase their knowledge of three different welding processes, materials and positions. Judges assessed their speed, accuracy, skill and adherence to welding procedures. Competitors used industry-standard welding tools plus a Lincoln virtual reality welding machine. Mr McDonald, who works at Bar Crusher Boats in Dandenong South, won first place. "I found it challenging this year having to use the Lincoln VR machine. That was a surprise!" he said. "I've competed the last two years and came last in 2017. "I was determined to do better this year I've done a full 180." Event organiser and Chisholm teacher Rodney Bentvelzen said the event promoted welding as an attractive career choice, allowed

State’s $5m cash kick for women’s footy in Casey Casey Fields will get a $5 million cash boost to improve facilities for women’s footy at the grounds which is home to the AFLW Melbourne Demons. The State Government announced the funding last week which will deliver femalefriendly change rooms, new team benches and an upgraded public-address system. In February the Victorian Greens called on the Andrews Government to fund urgent upgrades at Casey Fields in Cranbourne in a letter to the Victorian Treasurer. Member for the South East Metropolitan Region and the Victorian Greens spokesperson for women, Nina Springle said the facilities were not up to scratch. “This funding will be a huge boost for women’s football in the south-eastern suburbs and also for AFLW,” she said. “The Casey Demons have gone from strength to strength in the last few years, achieving record membership and attendance levels last year. But the facilities just can’t keep up with growth, in particular the impressive

growth of women’s football in the South-East.” “Our footballers need their own changing rooms to prepare for games and they need decent toilets, and Casey Fields just didn’t have those facilities or the money to get them,” Ms Springle said. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the revamp would boost the experience for their footy fans. “This will build a true home for the Demons at Casey Fields,” he said. “We’re investing in the future of sport in Victoria - from the suburbs to the ‘G.” Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said it was a win for the community. “We’re upgrading local grounds, change rooms and pavilions right across Victoria - so everyone has the facilities they need to play and watch the sport they love,” he said. The upgrade is part of a $241.6 million boost for women’s and community sport in the Victorian Budget 2018/19.

Plea to catch Zabi’s killer By Cam Lucadou-Wells Distraught family members have pleaded for justice for their late brother and son Zabi Ezedyar who was murdered at a home in Kurrajong Road, Narre Warren last year. Zabi's sister Deana Ezedyar and mother, Mariam Ezedyar travelled from Perth to make a public plea for information on the unsolved murder on 16 August. Deana said her much-missed brother as an "innocent" victim who was "naive", "trusting" and a "kid at heart". "He died innocently so we want justice ... To put this person away so he doesn't do it again. "If you have a brother, sister, wife or kids, you come out (with information)." Homicide Squad police are exploring whether Zabi was gunned down as a result of mistaken identity, with the killer possibly linked to the Comancheros or another outlaw motorcycle gang. Detective Inspector Tim Day said there was nothing to suggest in Zabi's background that he would have been the intended target. Police are closing on a link between a Honda CRV seen driving in the area shortly before the shooting about 7.40pm on 16 August and a white late model Toyota Corolla. The 2014-15 Corolla was possibly used by the offenders in the lead-up, Victoria Police believe. Zabi had moved to Melbourne seven months before the shooting. It was the first time he'd moved out by himself. Deana and Mariam had visited Zabi for two weeks up to the day before the shooting. "It was like we were meant to go there," Deana said. She described him loving to box on a punching bag at home, loving food and loving his close-knit extended Afghan family in Perth

A late-model Toyota Corolla is believed to be linked to the shooting. and Melbourne. "He had a heart of gold," Deana said of her younger brother. "It's had a big impact on all of us ... We think of him every day." Zabi's mother Mariam and relatives had originally moved to Australia as refugees. They never imagined something like this would happen in Australia, Mariam said. His sister added that Zabi would have never been capable of carrying out such a shooting himself - or even thinking about doing it. Det Insp Day said "any piece of information no matter how small" could help solve Zabi's killing. He said there were a number of suspects identified by police, but wouldn't elaborate on the number. He said there was "absolutely no reason for Zabi's family to go through this." "We have a young man who has senselessly lost his life through the unnecessarily violent actions of others. "No family should have to lose their son or their brother like this." Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Ex-manager jailed for ‘ice’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells

12385479-EPJ17-18

A 50-year-old Endeavour Hills man has been jailed after police seized a large amount of ice, more than $400,000 cash, a stolen motorbike and firearms from his home. John Koutsogiannakis pleaded guilty to trafficking ice, illegally possessing firearms as well as proceeds of crime charges at the Victorian County Court. During a police raid of his home on 9 November 2015, officers seized 152 grams of meth - more than 50 per cent above the commercial trafficking threshold. It was found in 31 zip-lock bags in a bedroom safe and in a box along with traffickinglike paraphernalia such as scales, an array of mobile phones and a notebook of names and figures. Meth had also been flushed down the master bedroom's en suite toilet, Judge Paul Lacava said during sentencing on 13 April.

The former trucking manager was an ice addict at the time but the bulk of the seized drug was for trafficking purposes, the judge said. Police also found 211 grams of the recreational drug 1,4-butanediol and $400,199.45 cash in various locations - including $1214.45 in coins. Koutsogiannakis was also charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a Browning sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun and a 0.455 silver Webley Patents Mark I revolver and an imitation eight-millimetre Bruni P4 handgun. Since the raid, the accused had responded well to 27 days in intensive drug-addiction therapy to overcome his 1.5-gram a day ice habit, the court heard. He was only likely to re-offend if he relapsed into drug use, the judge said. Koutsogiannakis was convicted and jailed for up to four years, with a non-parole period of at least 32 months.

THREE ‌ autumn gardening tips

1

Mulch for your garden Mulch is your garden's best friend. It helps the soil hold in moisture so you don't have to water it as often and it also keeps down weeds. Over time, mulch will break down into your soil and improve it by adding nutrients. There are a few different types of mulch, including organic and inorganic varieties.

2

Fertilise your lawn Fertilising your lawn will ensure that it stays green and healthy throughout the year. Autumn is a great time to fertilise because it protects your lawn through the winter months. You should aim to fertilise twice a year for the best results.

3

Plant bulbs Planting bulbs is a great way to add a splash of colour to your garden. You'd be surprised how many different colours, sizes and types of bulbs that you can choose from. Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant them as they'll have enough time to grow before they are ready to flourish in spring. Bulbs are really easy to grow although make sure that you choose a spot with plenty of sunlight.

What event past, present or future would you like to witness? Humankind at peace across the world What is your favourite television show? Yes Prime Minister What is your favourite book? Shakespeare's Sonnets What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Thomas Jefferson, Muhammed Ali, Angela Merkel, Groucho Marx, Gough Whitlam, Emily Pankhurst What has been your most embarrassing moment? When I completed a long proforma providing very detailed measurements of the outdoor toilet facility at Neerim North Primary School in my first year of teaching as the Head Teacher and sent it Mr R. U. Daft, to the Department of Education, Melbourne oblivious to the fact that it was a prank played on me by colleagues. That became a local teachers party joke for the rest of the year! At school I.... enjoy the challenge of providing children with the best chance of daring to believe in their capacity to realise their dreams. What was your first or best concert? By Cam Lucadou-Wells A brilliant bunch of Berwick teenagers are taking on the world in a robotics world championships in Houston USA. Jadimo and Oriyla, Jayden and Riley, and Fletcher and Hudson are part of IC Robotics club won their place by blitzing all-comers at a South Pacific regional robotics championship in Sydney in March. The tech whizzes - three sets of siblings were brimming with excitement as they head off to the States on 16 April. They can't wait to meet 400 other teams from around the world as well as make an exclusive tour of NASA - perhaps witnessing a rocket launch, weather permitting. At the Sydney regionals, IC Robotics and their self-designed robot were ranked first across 60 frantic games of picking up, lifting and delivering 'power cubes' around an arena. They also took out the much-sought Chairman's Award for best embodying the spirit of not-for-profit organisers FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. This award doesn't just recognise robotic genius, but the articulate spruiking and entrepreneurship of these bright sparks. "We work in the community as part of the community," says Oriyla. In their own time, the youngsters have mentored and taught robotics at six schools. They hope their international success will further inspire their proteges.. The team has presented demos for up to 20,000 people at Stringybark Festival at Knox. They've met Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and won corporate sponsors to their cause. Even critics say proposed mandatory sentencing for aggravated car jackers and home invaders will play out favourably in the electorate. As part of the State Government's new $115 million law-and-order policy, community corrections orders will no longer be handed down for those offences. The offences will only be punished by jail or a drug treatment order. "We're further restricting the use of Community Corrections Orders to make sure that people who commit the most serious violent crimes get jail time," Police Minister Lisa Neville said. Less serious forms of car jacking and home invasion will also be punishable by only jail or a drug treatment order unless there are "special reasons". The special reasons include offenders with acquired brain injuries and intellectual disability. But drug-induced impairment is not included in the exemptions. The Government has been steadily building a tougher law-and-order regime. At the same time, after years of rising crime, the official rate in Casey has dropped by 13 per cent in 2017. But the raw numbers in the region are still alarming. There were 1834 reported burglaries and break-ins, more than 6900 thefts and 2315 assaults for the year in Casey. Opposition attorney-general John Pesutto said the changes were a step in the right direction, but a "half-hearted" attempt to tackle soft-sentencing of violent criminals. "The changes don't go nearly far enough because they won't stop soft sentences being handed down. "Victorians don't just want to see mandatory sentencing, they want to see mandatory minimum sentencing."

Berwick mother 'Anne', a victim-of-crime featured by Star News in July, says she supported mandatory jail terms but didn't trust courts to follow through. She hoped the "overdue" change would prevent others suffering like her daughter 'Beth' who was viciously stabbed and beaten unconscious by a man in her home. The crime "robbed" Beth, lumbering her with a significant brain injury and permanently maimed. A decade on, her condition has deteriorated to the point that she's confined to a wheelchair. "There's so much crime happening out there ... something has to change," Anne said. Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council chairman Arie Freiberg conceded the community felt reassured by mandatory sentences. "There's a perception out there that judges are lenient on crime, that if judges were more willing to be tough then the community will be safer. "There's not much evidence supporting that." Professor Freiberg said removing community correction orders took away options for judges to consider individual circumstances. Mandatory jail gave the community a "short reprieve" from the offender, he said. But it would probably not deter young offenders with short-term motivation and not much long-term planning. It would be unlikely to sway those influenced by gang and peer group pressure, or by drugs and alcohol, he argued. They don't think they will be caught, nor of the consequences of being caught, Prof Freiberg said. Casey Crime Page administrator Aaron Grant said stricter jail use should apply for those crimes but there should be still room for judicial discretion.

Bear witness As we approach winter, when motorists can expect the weather to impact on road conditions, it is crucial that we not only concentrate on driving safely, but that we also support members of our community involved in accidents. Recent crashes in and around Cranbourne last month led to police appealing for information from witnesses. In today’s fast-paced life, it is easy to think that someone else will help or someone else will wait around for the police to attend crash scenes, particularly if

12356737-ACM29-17

SOCIALLY SPEAKING

you become aware that emergency services have been alerted to the incident. But when people are injured in road accidents and pursue compensation claims due to their injuries, witnesses to the incident or its aftermath are crucial. An injured person might not remember key details of what happened, either because of their injuries or because they couldn’t see everything around them at the time of impact. Even when an injured person is able to tell their story, if the circumstances are unclear

and they don’t have the details of any witnesses, compensation for their injuries can be drastically reduced. So when you see something happen on the roads, it’s important that you speak up and pass on your contact details to those involved. You just might hold the key to completing the picture about who did what and whether or not their health and financial security is protected moving forward. On the 16 April the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a leading child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg dropping out of a City of Casey forum against the State Government’s Building Respectful Relationships school program, describing it as a “brain-washing exercise”. The panel’s composition however had “no balance at all”; he said and demanded an apology from the council. Casey’s forum fallout By Cam Lucadou-Wells A controversial forum against a State Government anti-bullying program has been scrapped and then reinstated at a dramatic Casey Council meeting on 17 April. The council narrowly voted to dump the 19 April forum against the Building Respectful Relationships schools program after one of its panellists Dr Michael Carr-Gregg dropped out and publicly labelled it as a "brain-washing exercise". Minutes after the vote, the forum was revived when dissenting councillors Susan Serey, Sam Aziz, Rosalie Crestani and Milla Gilic lodged a recission motion. The recission put the forum's cancellation on hold until the next council meeting in two weeks' time - too late to stop the forum from going ahead. During the heated and emotional meeting, forum proponent Cr Rosalie Crestani broke down as he spoke of protecting "our children" and "our future". "I don't cry that much. Forgive me, I get emotional because it's close to my heart. "There are stories of children getting mentally ill because of their exposure to this. "I just want to protect our babies." At the meeting, forum supporter Cr Serey said cancelling the promoted event would be an embarrassment. Cr Aziz said that it would be a defeat of freedom-of-speech and caving into political correctness or cowardice. Cr Gilic said the forum's presenters were required to be factual and evidence-based which would ensure the event's balance. Cr Tim Jackson introduced the motion to cancel the event, declaring there was a lack of balance on the forum's panel. "People have a right to their views but if we're presenting this to the Casey commu-

nity, it has to be a balanced forum." Councillor Wayne Smith described the forum as being founded on "ignorance" and "radical Christian ideology". He had it confirmed that extra security detail had been rostered at Bunjil Place for the forum, having heard "whispers" that a protest would be held. A high-school teacher, Cr Smith has observed the Building Respectful Relationships program cut down on homophobic bullying against LGBTI students. "I work with a lot of kids in the LGBTI community. They have issues with being bullied, not being respected and not being included," he told Star News. "So we ran Respectful Relationships for kids to know about this community. "It's not about promoting sexuality, just that anyone should be respected regardless of their race, religion, colour and sexual orientation." An "angry and disappointed" Dr CarrGregg told Star News he'd accepted an invitation to be part of the 19 April public event on the basis of a "balanced debate".

The panel's composition however had "no balance at all", he told Star News on 16 April. "I think City of Casey owe me an apology. It's used my name and reputation to promote what sounds like a brain-washing exercise. "They need to take a hard look at themselves. "It's incredible that in this day and age we can have that blinkered way of thinking." In June 2017, Casey councillors voted to lobby against the Building Respectful Relationships curriculum due to its "premature sexualisation" of young people and "sexual political agenda". The impending forum was born from that motion. Dr Carr-Gregg said the panel lacked a representative from the Royal Childrens' Hospital and the LGBTI community. Though he disagreed with "aspects" of the Safe Schools anti-bullying program, he said the program's proponents had a right to be heard. The panel includes three parents against

the program - one who claims her child was admitted to hospital with an anxiety attack as a result of the curriculum. Cr Crestani responded to Dr Carr-Gregg's comments with an unreserved apology. "As a renowned child psychologist Dr Carr-Gregg was an obvious choice to address the forum and share his considerable expertise. "I am saddened and disappointed that he feels misled and apologise unreservedly." There had been efforts to inject more balance with unrequited invitations to child psychologist Steve Biddulph, Education Minister James Merlino as well as Dr CarrGregg, Cr Crestani said. She said no invitations were sent to representatives of the LGBTI community. "It may have been an uncomfortable situation for the LGBTI community to be on that panel." There would be opportunity for questions and varying opinions from the floor, she said. "If you look at (ABC TV's) Q&A you very rarely see a fully balanced panel. Conservatives are left off or one is left in a lonesome situation," Cr Crestani said. Dr Carr-Gregg's place on the panel has been taken by conservative ethicist and writer Bill Muehlenberg who wrote Dangerous Relations: The Threat of Homosexuality. Mr Muehlenberg was a "detailed researcher" who had written "evidence" and "statistically"-based books on the subject area, she said. On 16 April, Dr Carr-Gregg was taken aback that he had yet to receive a response, explanation or an apology from the council to his concerns. "This is not the Casey Council I've known and done a lot of work for in the past. "I conclude that the council members either don't care or they are just rude."

A Dandenong North man arrested as part of extensive police raids against commercial drug and firearm trafficking has been offered 18 months' jail as a sentence indication. Adam Tadros, 40, was among 14 people arrested in Operation Bonito raids across Melbourne including Cranbourne North, Clyde North, Hallam and Dandenong North on 17 April. He faced charges of possessing a firearm as a prohibited person, retaining a firearm as a stolen good and possession of cannabis at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on the same day. The court heard Tadros became linked to the investigation during a transaction between a police covert operative and a Hallam man who organised the trafficking ring. The operative had allegedly arranged by text-message to buy a M200 bolt-action rifle from the alleged Hallam ringleader. On 20 December, they drove to Tadros's

edly being under surveillance for the past five months. "He's tainted in some respects by the whole operation and the offending that took place." Prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court that Tadros was prohibited to possess a weapon due to recently undergoing a supervised community corrections order. Police sought a jail term due to Tadros's similar prior offences and being part of a larger-scale illegal operation. "Community safety and protection should be at the forefront of sentencing." Magistrate Pauline Spencer offered Tadros 18 months' jail as a sentence indication if he pleaded guilty. Ms Spencer said firearms were a significant risk to the community, noting that Tadros was particularly culpable being prohibited to possess guns. She said she'd remand him in custody for two weeks to seek further legal advice. He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 May.

A man has tried to deceptively get refunds for expensive goods by returning cardboard boxes filled with stones, a court has heard. Paul Sergides pleaded guilty to two counts of deception at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 April. He had purported to return a $1399 drone to a JB Hi-Fi store in Narre Warren on 25 November after buying the item from the store the day before. A staff member noticed the sealing on the box was scratched. There was no drone but just stones inside, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 17 April.

family home address, described by the Hallam man as a "safe house" for stored weapons, the court heard. The man spoke to Tadros at the home's front door and then entered a horse float in the front yard, emerging with the weapon down his pants. The weapon was transferred to the police operative's car boot. The operative paid $1700 for the gun, which had been stolen during a burglary in Berwick in 2015, the court heard. During the 17 April raid, Tadros was arrested at home with a small amount of cannabis seized from the garage. His lawyer told the court that Tadros did not know the weapon was stored in the horse float. He'd just moved back to what was his parents' home. "My instructions are he didn't know it was there and he was angry with Mr Singh for putting it in their moveable property." The lawyer noted Tadros was not linked to any other trafficking activity despite undoubt-

Sergides took the drone to JB Hi-Fi in Pakenham the same day and exchanged it for a Sony camera worth $1399. He later returned to the Pakenham store with the camera's box filled with stones, in an attempt for a 'refund'. Sergides was foiled by a store security guard who had witnessed his deception at the Narre Warren store. His lawyer told the court that Sergides also had relevant priors for "almost identical" offending in 2016 - except it involved the 'return' of a phone. Sergides had spent the past 33 days in remand while awaiting a committal hearing

for aggravated car-jacking charges, the court heard. Despite being on two community corrections orders, Sergides' drug issues had escalated up to the time of his arrest on the latter charges in March, the lawyer said. Corrections officers had requested Sergides not to attend their Pakenham office due to concerns that he would be tempted to reoffend at a nearby JB Hi-Fi store, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Sergides faced a lengthy time in custody and would not be eligible for a further community corrections order. Sergides was sentenced to seven days in jail.

Recycling changes By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Casey Council has renegotiated with its recycling contractor in the wake of Chinese restrictions. ers are seeking variations from their respective councils. The proposal seems reasonable under the current circumstances and is required to ensure continued service." The variation comes soon after Casey Council declared its recycling operations were unaffected by the Chinese Government's restrictions. Casey waste and landfill manager Michael Jansen told Star News in February that "SKM already produces recyclable product to the higher standard now required by China, and is currently developing additional processing facilities with the latest sorting technology." The Municipal Association of Victoria says after that date, all Victorians face extra rate rises of between 1.1 and 2.5 per cent to cover recycling costs. China is reportedly the largest importer of recyclable materials in the world. Its ban on 24 categories of solid waste this year is believed to affect an annual average of 619,000 tonnes of material in Australia.

Casey Council will shell out more than $500,000 to its recycling contractor due to China's recycling import restrictions. According to a council report, the council is varying the rebate it receives for recycled material under its seven-year contract with SKM Industries. The terms have been kept confidential but will result in a $560,550 shortfall in expected income in 2017-18, the report states. The defecit is expected to be offset by waste management savings, according to the report. SKM argues the fixed-rate rebate level is unsustainable due to the Chinese government's tighter contamination rules and import permits for recycled products. "In the present climate it is not considered an advantage for Casey to terminate the contract and retender. "It is highly unlikely that a more favourable tender will be submitted than the SKM offer and it is highly likely that termination would result in recyclables being sent to landfill for a period." The variation will apply from February-June 2018, with Casey officers requested to negotiate a further "cost-sharing" variation from 1 July. The report states that the council will be taking advantage of a $13 million State Government rescue package to help renegotiate with recycling contractors. SKM - as well as other major Victorian recyclers Visy Paper and Polytrade Recycling - are strongly reliant on the Chinese market, the report notes. "It is understood that all three service provid-

Times to honour our fallen By Brendan Rees The community will have the opportunity to honour the sacrifices of the brave men and women who served the country in a range of Anzac Day commemorative services and remembrance marches in Casey. Casey Council invites residents and visitors to come along and pay their respects at a service on Anzac Day, Wednesday 25 April which has been driven by the dedicated people-power of local RSL sub-branches and community groups. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said it was an important day for the community to keep the ANZAC spirit alive and encouraged everyone to attend a service. "ANZAC Day is a day that I believe is to be treated with great reverence and a day to reflect on the service, sacrifice and spirit of fighting for what is right and preserving what is good," she said.

For king and empire they answered the call to war other nurse from 65 local families. The walk and book are titled They Answered The Call: a World War I Walk in Cranbourne Cemetery. Two of the soldiers buried at Cranbourne didn’t even make it to the battlefields, dying while at the Seymour training camp. Nine died in France, six in Belgium, one at Gallipoli and one on Lemnos. Five enlisted aged 18, the eldest to enlist said he was 50 but was closer to 60. Two enlisted with an alias. The first to enlist was H. Smethurst on 18 August 1914; the first death was W. Thyer on 29 August 1915. Two career soldiers served in two wars, a 13-year-old enlisted in the Navy and served continuously for 44 years and in both World War I and II.

One soldier was a prisoner of the Germans, one soldier survived the battlefields of the Western Front only to die as a civilian prisoner of the Japanese in World War II. Nurse Robertson served at the same time as her two brothers, while the extended Ridgway family waited for seven men to return. Twenty-eight sets of brothers enlisted, four men were wounded three or more times and five soldiers returned home accompanied by their new wives. Some of the returned men took up Soldier Settlement blocks. Others involved themselves in the local community life on many committees and with the newly established Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). One mother had 10 sons, the eldest four enlisted in World War I only two returned, then in

World War II she waited while her three youngest went to the battlefields and thankfully all returned. “All these men and women are part of the collective story that is our local community’s involvement in World War I,” said Narre Warren and District Family History Group member Jane Rivett-Carnac. The walk is on Sunday 22 April 2018 at 10am at Cranbourne Cemetery corner of Sladen Street and Cemetery Road, Cranbourne. The cost is $5 per adult payable on the day. Ball from a bygone era By Brendan Rees A spectacular night of 1920s elegance and jazzy revelling was embraced by 220 guests at a ‘Great Gatsby’ themed ball held at Bunjil Place on Saturday 14 April. The event, organised by cancer victim Effie Atkins, raised $65,000 to help boost the number of patients to undertake Monash Health’s Clinical Cancer Trials. There was plenty of fashion and styles with guests arriving in vintage cars before being welcomed with canapes and champagne. Head of the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (Monash University) Professor Eric Morand and Latrobe MP Jason Wood were among the special guests. Ms Atkins said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of all the sponsors and the community’s support. “We knew we were fighting for a worthy cause but have been so humbled by all the help that has made this event such an amazing success,” she said. “A very special thank you to our major sponsors, Mercedes Benz Berwick, Melbourne Racing Club and the wonderful team at Harcourt Real Estate Berwick.” Ms Atkins also hosted a High Tea fundraiser at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick last November which raised $10,000. Ms Atkins turned her life around after undergoing an experimental trial at Monash Hospital - a new form of cancer treatment that mobilises a person’s immune system to fight the disease. Her daughter Kerry Georgiou said they hoped to raise $135,000 per year over the next three years. “This will help Monash Health employ an extra oncology fellow that will in turn add over 100 extra people to these clinical cancer trials,” she said.

Hounded by the "Press", "Famed Movie Star" "Dolores Delightful" welcomed guests on the Red Carpet. 179249 “Incredibly, over 80 per cent of patients on these trials are responding. That means their cancers are decreasing size, resolving and walking away in remission. Even more incredible, the side effects are very minor and in some cases non-existent,” Ms Georgiou said. FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Foot and leg care Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities so it's no wonder most people suffer foot, ankle, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can be done about it? Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia's leading musculoskeletal podiatrists and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. "The most common concerns include knee pain, injuries and arthritis, heel, shin and forefoot pain ankle and achilles concerns," Dr Dowie said. "Foot and leg pain is often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist." Dr Dowie also explained that foot and leg pain is often due to bad foot posture which continually pulls the body out of alignment, placing undue stress on joints and tissues causing pain and injury. "Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet so it is advisable to get any pain, skin or tissues changes or irregularities in the feet looked at as soon as possible," he said. "If you're prescribed an arthroscopy, cortisone injections or anti-inflammatory medications as treatment for pain, injury or arthritis, get a second opinion. These treatments may be considered to assist in some cases but are definitely not long-term solutions. "The latest research shows that traditional treatments like these can actually delay healing or cause further tissue damage in many cases. Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre is urging men diagnosed with prostate cancer to 'get as much information as possible from urologists and oncologists'. "Prostate cancer is now the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men (after skin cancer) and over 3000 men die from the disease every year in Australia," Mr McCahy said. "Whilst this may sound alarming, prostate cancer only accounts for about 4% of all male deaths and the average age of death is over 80 years. So prostate cancer is common, but slow growing and frequently not fatal." Mr McCahy explained that there are few specific symptoms associated with prostate cancer and the majority of men are now diagnosed after a blood test - prostate-specific antigen (PSA). "Despite its name, PSA is not that specific - infections, big benign prostates and trauma can all cause the test to be raised," he said. "But if it is higher than expected it is a warning sign that something may be going on and the best advice would be to see a urologist. Options include prostate biopsy, MRI scan or just keep an eye on things." Mr McCahy also advised of possible treatments. "If cancer is found with a biopsy, treatments include removing the prostate (radical prostatectomy) which can involve robotic surgery, various forms of radiotherapy and what is called active surveillance, where PSA is monitored along with other signs, and surgery or radiotherapy offered if the cancer appears to be progressing," Mr McCahy said. "This latter strategy has reduced the significant complications associated with the traditional treatments." Philip McCahy is also a Consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. Heart disease claims the lives of thousands of Australians each year and that’s why the Heart Foundation is focusing on the importance of physical activity in reducing the prevalence and impact of the disease during its annual Heart Week being held from April 29- May 5. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death, killing one person every 12 minutes and accounting for nearly 30 per cent of all deaths in this country. Largely preventable, heart disease affects one in six Australians with more than one million people aged 30-65 at a high risk of having a heart attack or stroke—many of whom may not even know it. Knowing your individual risks is the first step in avoiding a heart attack or stroke and the best way to find out your overall risk is to see your doctor or health practitioner for a heart health check. While there are some risks that can’t be changed—for example—increasing age, being male, ethnic background (Indian sub-continent and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and family history, there are plenty of risk factors that can be mitigated such as smoking; high cholesterol; high blood pressure; diabetes; being inactive; being overweight; unhealthy diet; depression/isolation. Fortunately for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities, St John of God Berwick Hospital offers a range of cardiac services and specialises in the management of patients who are experiencing symptoms associated with heart failure. Along with a cardiovascular interventional laboratory, which allows cardiologists to look inside a heart and enables them to diagnose and treat heart conditions, the hospital offers cardiac/high dependency care to patients who have experienced a cardiac event such as a heart attack.

Get your hands on Casey Cardinia Kids magazine!

A time when old men rule By Brendan Rees The average Victorian councillor is male, middle-aged, married or in a de-facto relationship and has a second job. That's according to the results of this year's Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) Councillor Census released on Friday 6 April. Sixty per cent of councillors spend 11 to 30 hours a week on councillor duties, in addition to other employment responsibilities, which has not changed since 2009 according to the MAV's survey. Most councillors are men aged over 46 years and two-thirds of councillors are either working in paid employment or self-employed with the majority earning above $52,000 per year (excluding councillor allowances). Despite 86 per cent of councillors being born in Australia, more than 30 per cent of these had one or more parents born overseas. The state government in December approved a two per cent increase to mayoral and councillor allowances across Victoria, meaning Casey councillors could earn up to $30,223 in 2017-18 and the mayor up to $96,534. MAV President, Cr Mary Lalios said that the MAV's fifth councillor census helped to shed light on profiling the elected membership of Victorian councils. "The number of councillors that have served four to six years in local government decreased since 2013, however, the number of longer-serving women councillors with over 10 years' experience has increased," she said. "Women have higher levels of postgraduate qualifications than male councillors despite almost 50 per cent of them have caring responsibilities compared to less than 30 per cent of male councillors." Of City of Casey's 11 council-

Of City of Casey’s 11 councillors, only four are women. Picture: CITY OF CASEY lors, only four are women. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said Casey council had a good balance of councillors but believed they should be paid-full time. "Having to work part-time for council and then to hold down a full-time job is just unrealistic in this day and age," she said. Cr Stapledon said she worked about 40 hours a week dedicated to councillor duties. "It is a real privilege but it is really a commitment," she said. "I think people underestimate the value of a councillor and the work that they do. "If we were given the opportunity to work full time it would take a lot of stress off us. "It is really important that you attend the events and show the community how appreciated they are," Cr Stapledon said. "If you're in it for the right reasons, you're hard working; committed to the community you can make a really significant difference. So that money would be well invested." She said a university degree should never have to be a requirement to be a councillor: "I think what you need is life experience." The survey collated responses from 336 councillors across 79 councils.

When was the last time you gave a local business or service a star rating? Whether you’ve had a great service or an absolutely bad experience, the internet rating you give a company will impact the future of their business. You’d be surprised at what an impact those online star ratings can have on the decision of other consumers to use a business. In fact, 92 per cent of consumers read online reviews before making a decision to purchase a product or service. Businesses that achieve a star four rating or higher rating are in the most trusted group with 94 per cent of consumers saying they would use a business with rating over four stars. For those businesses with just 1 or 2 stars, consumers speak with their feet and head for the exit with only 14 per cent considering doing business. Online Solutions Manager, Paul Bewicke of Star Media Platform advises businesses it’s vital that they mange their online reputation by maintaining responses to both positive and negative reviews and taking steps to win customers with great service, not just in the store or job site, but also online. “80 per cent trust reviews as much as personal recommendations,“ Mr Bewicke said. He advises business operators that it’s not just about positive reviews, but an honest mix of positive and negative. Surprisingly all positive

reviews can be an issue too with 30 per cent of consumers assuming online reviews are fake if there are no negative reviews. “It’s so important to respond quickly online. When a business resolves its issue quickly and efficiently, 95 per cent of unhappy customers return to your business.’’ Mr Bewicke said Media Platform is a comprehensive solution for those businesses struggling to stay on top of their online footprint. He said businesses risk damaging their online reputation if they are not actively engaging with customers, responding to reviews and generating insights through social media. More and more consumers and businesses are engaging online before they shop and on average, a consumer will look at over 10 information sources before making a purchase. If you’re a local business you’ll no doubt benefit from a digital health check report. Star Media Platform offers a zero-cost audit of a business’s online presence that will help put them in the right direction to better service customers and achieve the star rating they deserve. To take advantage of the digital health check just visit mediaplatform.starcommunity.com. au to request this powerful online scorecard for your business or give Paul Bewicke a call at 5945 0653 to get an idea of the services available on the platform. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Wins keep coming for Cavs By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers had another strong weekend of Big V basketball, with all four teams competing hard. The State Championship Men made the most of their chances, and in doing so climbed from bottom of the ladder (12th) all the way up to fifth with two important wins. Their first win came against the Keilor Thunder on Saturday night at home and was the product of a blistering start. Raheem Lemons' (22 points, 7 rebounds) fine form continued, with another game-winning performance and was well supported by Brandon Polk (10 points, 11 rebounds). Both were vital down the stretch as the Thunder attempted a comeback. The Cavs eventually claimed the win, 71-63. Less than 24 hours later, the Cavs travelled to Werribee to take on the Devils in what was an offensive-minded game from both teams. Once again, the Cavs got off to a flying start. Raheem Lemons (24 points, 8 rebounds) put up another dominant performance and it was Matt Donlan (30 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) who stood up when Casey needed him most. Donlan's hot shooting from beyond the arc was vital as his five triples helped keep Werribee at bay, leading the Cavs to a high-octane 105-101 win. Whilst the State Championship Men got their season back on track, the Division 1 Women continued on their merry way. The Lady Cavs remain undefeated with a 5-0 record after recording two comprehensive wins over the weekend. A 20-6 start meant the game was well in control from the outset as Jamie-Lee Jeffs (14 points, 11 rebounds) stamped her authority on

the game. Rebecca Borham chipped in with 14 points and 5 rebounds as Casey claimed a 7450 win. Another quick start saw the Lady Cavs take care of business against the Hawthorn Magic on Sunday at home. A 23-7 lead at the first break set up the win as Tanarly Hood (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Tarryn Wilkin (8 points, 10 rebounds) were too much for the Magic. The Lady Cavs ran out 7545 winners. The Youth League 1 Men suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to the Sunbury Jets, 62-94. The Jets were impressive and led from outset, despite the best efforts of Brendon Head (15 points, 7 rebounds). Unfortunately for the Cavs, there just weren't enough contributors on the night. The Youth League 2 Women won an intense battle against the Pakenham Warriors. Both teams headed into the match-up undefeated and it's the Lady Cavs' record that remains untarnished. In what a spectacle that showcased the very best of BigV basketball, Lauren Tuplin (23 points, 8 rebounds) and Tess Young (15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) led Casey to a thrilling 72-70 win. Casey were able to make the big plays when needed as their ball movement and willingness to share the rock proved crucial. Ellie Coutts was phenomenal for Pakenham, posting 9 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals. In Round 5 Big V action, the State Championship Men have the weekend off, whilst the Youth League 2 Women travel to Mornington to face the Breakers on Saturday night.

Locals shine on the Gold Coast

The Comets bounce back

By Hayley Wildes Our local hopes at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have done us proud. In what was a highly successful Games for Australia as a whole, our local competitors have also claimed multiple medals in an array of competitions. Laetisha Scanlan, who was born and raised in Berwick, had a 28th birthday to remember, claiming gold in the women's trap shooting event. The defending Champion didn't have it all her own way, after just making it through the qualification stage in a sudden death shootout. As she often does, she held her nerve and performed under the intense pressure of that shootout. Scanlan lifted for the final to make it backto-back gold medals, hitting 38 of 50 targets a new Games record - one ahead of Northern Ireland's Kirsty Barr. Scanlan wasn't the only shooter from Berwick to have great success at the Games, as Sergei Evglevski claimed a silver medal in the men's 25-metre rapid fire pistol event. He made it through two qualification stages to make it to the final - a final dominated by Evglevski and eventual gold medal-winner, Anish Bhanwala from India. 20-year-old Evglevski was competing at his maiden Commonwealth Games and first major meet in the senior grade. It's clear that he has an extremely bright future in the sport. Steph Blicavs and Daniel Kickert, from Endeavour Hills and Berwick respectively, claimed gold medals as Australia dominated their rivals on the basketball court. The Opals claimed gold in women's basketball with a dominant 99-55 win over England in the final, with Blicavs draining two triples and finishing with seven points. The Boomers took care of business against Canada, 87-47, to claim gold in men's basketball. Kickert posted eight points, three rebounds and two assists in the final. Both teams went through the tournament undefeated, with the Opals averaging a ridiculous 53-point winning margin, whilst the berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Both teams then have a game less than 24 hours later, with the Division 1 Women travelling to Latrobe to take on the Energy and the Youth League 1 Men head to Geelong.

By Nick Creely

Steph Blicavs won gold with the Opals. 173518 Boomers averaged a massive winning margin of 37 points. In the pool, Tooradin-raised Josh Beaver took home bronze in the men's 200-metre backstroke. After qualifying sixth quickest, Beaver turned it up a gear in the final, capping an Australian sweep of the medals in the event, with Mitch Larkin claiming gold and Bradley Woodward taking home silver. The bronze medal was Beaver's fourth Commonwealth Games medal, after taking home two silvers and a bronze at the 2014 Games in Glasgow. Overall, Australia claimed an incredible 198 medals in total; 80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze. That total was streaks ahead of next best England, who finished with 136 medals; 45 gold, 45 silver and 46 bronze.

FFV SOCCER WRAP ROUND 3 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH/EAST The Casey Comets well and truly bounced back from last week's drubbing, knocking off Beaumaris under lights 2-1 on Friday night. In front of their home crowd, the Comets were almost immediately on the board after Dejan Radojicic found the back of the net in the eighth minute, before Radojicic struck once more before half time to have the home side in a strong position. The Sharks found a late goal in the second, but were unable to break through the defences of the home side in an otherwise disappointing performance. As a result of the win, the Comets sit in fourth spot, only one point off Richmond SC in third. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH/EAST Berwick City is finally on the board in 2018, grinding their way to an 0-1 victory against Heatherton United away on Saturday night. After two opening round losses, the pressure was on City - a side expected to be in the running for a premiership - to claim a win and get their season off and running. In a hard fought battle of territory in what was a horrible Melbourne day, Christopher L'Enclume found the goal City needed, finding the back of the net in a match winning strike. Down at Waratah Reserve, Doveton thumped North Caulfield 3-1. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH In State 5 Rowville District was far too strong for Bunyip at Park Ridge 6-0, while Lyndale United defeated Casey Panthers 0-5 in a powerful display. In other matches across the round, Chelsea FC thumped Knox United 6-1, White Star Dandenong couldn't quite pip Endeavour Hills Fire 1-3, while Somerville Eagles kept it's good form going with a cruisy win against Aspendale SC 3-1. Old Mentonians had the bye. Thursday, 19 April, 2018

The Rays reap the rewards By Hayley Wildes It's fair to say the Dandenong Stingrays were handed a tough schedule to begin their 2018 TAC Cup campaign. As if trips to Geelong, Morwell and Bendigo for the first three games of the season weren't challenging enough, they also had to contend with just a four-day break between facing the Falcons and Power. But if there is one thing we know about the 'Rays, it's that they don't make excuses - they get on with the job and continue to work hard. That hard work and determination has so far been rewarded. The Stingrays have seen off all challenges before them and sit on the top of the TAC Cup ladder with an impressive 3-0 record. Mark Wheeler, Dandenong Stingrays Talent Manager, admitted the travel was a test, but is happy to have got past it without suffering a loss. "We'd rather have our travel at the start of the year than the end of the year, so you will see at the end of the year we're limiting our travel. It's definitely been a great start to the season." Wheeler said. The depth of the team has been a standout thus far. 13 individual goal kickers in the 97-point demolition of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in their last game is evidence of that. Talking about that performance against the Rebels, in which the 'Rays were without stars Riley Bowman and Bailey Williams who were on AFL Academy duties, Wheeler was thrilled with the unselfishness of the team. "All of us were sitting in front of the coach's box in the last quarter and we were just sitting there going 'this is probably the tightest group we've seen'." Wheeler said. position, so there was no selfish football out there. We've just got to hold this group together and see if they can continue to do it." Another factor that has seen the team get off to the strong start is the experience of the group. Wheeler explains, "Most of our boys had

played four TAC Cup games already. It is very unusual where at the start of the season, half your team has already played four or five TAC Cup games." "I think that depth has really helped us out. We played most of our 17 year olds last year and I think that's what has held us in good

stead for this year." If you need more evidence that the Stingrays are in one of the strongest positions in recent memory, you need not look any further than the recently released initial Victoria Country squad for the 2018 NAB AFL U18 Championships. With 17 players named, and Angus Patterson being added in since, there will be a huge Stingrays presence at the Championships later this year. "Definitely it's the most we've had." Wheeler said. "The two Cumming's boys [Stephen and Matthew] will be playing for the Northern Territory, and if they weren't, they would've been in the Vic Country squad too. So to have 18 players in the Vic Country squad is definitely a record." Those named in the squad have all had impressive summers and improved over the preseason, but Wheeler highlighted a couple who have really stood out. "Zac Foot from Langwarrin really struggled to make it into our program as a 17-year-old. He was playing against men last year and I watched him and I'd say he had one of the best summers out of our group." Wheeler said. "Bailey Schmidt is another good story as well. He broke his leg as a 16-year-old and it took him all the way through to his 17th year to get that right. Now he's starting to show why he's one of the best big men around and as the season goes on, he'll only get better." In their first home game of the season, the 'Rays will be looking to add another win on Sunday at 12:30pm against the Western Jets. With a curtain-raiser beforehand, it will be a big day of footy at Shepley Oval. "It's great to be getting a game back at home on a big deck. With a Tasmania v NT curtain-raiser before it, there will be a plenty of recruiters around and the boys are really looking forward to a home game." Wheeler said.

17. HOW many runs did Sir Donald Bradman score in his last Test innings?

There's never a bad time to hit a home-run. But there are times when a home-run is needed more than others. Pakenham local Emily Devine, 15, understands that better than most. Playing for Victoria in the gold medal match at the 2018 Youth Women's Australian Baseball Championships in Geelong earlier this month, Devine stepped up in the biggest of moments. With scores tied 0-0 at the midpoint of the game, with pitchers dominating proceedings, it was Devine who broke the deadlock. She didn't just break the deadlock though, she smashed it. A two-run homer that sailed over the heads of her New South Wales counterparts sent the crowd and her teammate's wild. Speaking about that hit, Devine admits she knew she'd hit it sweetly the moment it left her bat. "When I hit it, I was like, 'Oh that felt really good off the bat', and I was hoping it went over. I sprinted really hard up the first base line, and then I was realised it was a homer." Devine said. The game needed a hero and it was Devine's massive hit that proved the match-winner as Victoria claimed the Championship, 2-0. Devine who plays locally in the Dandenong Baseball Association for the Springvale Lions over the summer and Berwick Dodgers in the winter, began her baseball journey five years ago with the Pakenham Pumas after watching movies and falling in love with the game. Devine just had to try the sport and she wasn't disappointed. "It was just like what I'd seen [in the movies] and I just wanted to keep playing." Devine said. The Pakenham Pumas allowed Devine to hone her skills from a young age and were key to her development. "The Pumas were really good. They taught me well and really showed me how to play the game." Devine said. Whilst all three clubs have played a massive role in Devine becoming one of the brightest young prospects in Victoria, one particular mentor stands out. "Shae Lilywhite." Devine said. "She's

Local baseballer Emily Devine is making a name for herself. Picture: SUPPLIED. helped me with technique, she's helped me focus on the game and she's just done so much in every aspect of the game for me." Baseball has taken her across the globe. Last July, Devine jetted off to Japan with a selection of the very best U25 Australian female baseball players. It was an experience that Devine won't soon forget. "We all went to Japan to learn about how the Japanese play and how they train - just to really build on our skills. It was amazing." Devine said. What does the future hold for Devine in baseball? Whilst she hopes to continue to compete at the highest level possible, she also wants to focus on having fun. "I just want to keep having fun with it - I'm in love with it so much." Devine said. "I really love the people - it's a great community and everyone helps each other out, everybody is just there for you and it's just very supportive." That community and support was evident in the lead up to the Nationals, as the Springvale Lions helped Devine tremendously with fundraising. "I would really love to thank Springvale for fundraising and helping me get to Nationals." Devine said. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Narre end the Wickers' run By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 2 The streak is finally over. Berwick's amazing run of 19 consecutive wins came to a grinding halt, in a grand final rematch against Narre Warren in extremely wet and torrential conditions at Edwin Flack Reserve. Matt Shinners' men settled beautifully, but were unable to place enough scoreboard pressure despite flicking the ball around the ground as if the turf was dry. It didn't take long for the Magpies to kick the opening goal of the day, with a long range goal opening their account, and as the rain tumbled, the visitors were simply cleaner, keeping their feet and using the ball smartly. A Mitch Cox set shot that sailed through the goals gave the Magpies a second, stretching the margin out to 16 points, before a beautiful curler from Aaron Wilson courtesy of a free kick only moments later threatened to take the game away from the Wickers. But the reigning premiers were never going to lie down, with Stewart Kemperman's side slowly working back into the contest through some gutsy efforts of defenders Will Arthurson and Joe West, as well as leaders in Luke Jellyman-Turner and Luke Sheppard. The equation remained simple enough; the Wickers trailed by 18 at three quarter time and were charging hard, and all the Magpies had to do was dip deep and play solid, old fashioned wet weather football. While the margin hovered around the 13 point mark for a lot of the final term, there was a sense that the Wickers may just overrun the brave Magpies. Only moments after a Harrison Money goal brought the margin back to just seven points deep in the final term, Mitch Cox drew a free kick only 20 out, slotting the set shot and snuffing out any come from behind victory. The Magpies ran out 19 point winners in the end, 5.10(40) to 8.11(59), with a goal in the dying seconds by Stewart Scanlon sealing a memorable day for the club. "You never know what to expect with conditions like what we faced on Saturday," Magpies coach Matt Shinners said. "I was saying to my players, you get sunburnt one week, and frostbite the next. "We fielded a pretty good side, and we were confident we could take it up right up to them, we just wanted to put our best foot forward against a side that's been so good for so long." At Starling Road, It was wet weather footy at its finest, a hard slog between Officer and Tooradin-Dalmore, clubs desperate to continue on with their winning form. But Officer was always one step ahead. Doug Koop's side have found a ruthless edge to their football, and if the first two rounds are anything to go by, they will be up to their eyeballs in the race to break a finals drought that dates back to 2004. It appeared the Gulls had settled quicker, and as the rain poured down they handled the slippery conditions well. Until the Kangaroos clicked into gear. A brilliant contested mark from Matthew Clarke was duly slotted in the fourth minute, before Jesse Longmuir made the Gulls pay for a turnover from a kick in. Kangaroos ruckman Sean Roach was particularly prominent early, especially at ground level, acting like an extra midfielder around the stoppages, while backman James Waldon repelled everything in his path in a brilliant opening quarter where the Gulls peppered their forward 50 in a burst. A terrific running goal from the impressive Jake Ingaliso after a missed opportunity at the other end was costly, and despite having periods of play where they found the footy, the Gulls were in trouble. Missed opportunities were quickly counting against them, and it seemed like every time a six point opportunity was squandered, the hunger that the 'Roos possess in the early stages of 2018 drove the ball quickly the other way. With the Kangaroos fierce at the contest and exciting on the outside, the past players of the club watched on as the revitalised club showed maturity, restricting the Gulls to just 1.7 for the berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

second half, running away 43 point winners, 10.8(68) to 2.13(25) in a dour defensive performance led brilliantly by Waldon, who turned heads with an eye catching display. Another to play a brilliant game was Colac recruit Stephen Heppel, who looks a composed player set for a big year down at Starling Road. An extremely disappointed TooradinDalmore coach Lachie Gillespie admitted his side failed to match Officer's intensity, despite some key players missing from the side. "The boys and the coaches are disappointed with the game, we fell away badly," he said. "We had a few blokes out (Adam Galea, Nick Lang, Nathan Goodacre and Dean Warry), while it's not an excuse, we back our game plan with those guys in - in the end we were lucky to have Kitcho (Ryan Kitchin) cleared on Friday night. "And adding to that, we had some umpiring decisions go against us that resulted in Officer goals, but that's a story for another day." At Holm Park in a clash between Beaconsfield and Cranbourne, it all came down to the crunch moments, periods of play that were pivotal in deciding who would walk away with the four points. In the opening stages of the final term at Holm Park in the battle of the Eagles, with Beaconsfield locked on 4.4(28) and Cranbourne on 3.8(26), an opportunistic, and sublime goal gave the home side a momentum unable to be contained. From a boundary throw in deep in the Eagles' forward 50, a handball fell in the hands of Riley Verbi, who bended a banana off balance straight through the goals from just outside the boundary, an extremely difficult piece of magic made to look easier than it was. Only seconds later, Verbi struck again, soccering the ball through from the goal square to give the Eagles a 14 point buffer, and more

importantly, a match winning lead. Beaconsfield ran out eight point winners, 6.6(42) to 4.10(34) in a welcome return to form. In the final game of the round, Pakenham bested Doveton in a massive clash for both sides, 5.6(36) to 5.12(42) Staring down the barrel of a 0-3 record to start the season, the pressure was certainly on Doveton when the Lions made their way to AJ Robinson Oval in horrendous conditions on Saturday. Finding plenty of the footy early, and winning the ball cleanly at the stoppages, a piece of brute strength from big ruckman Russ Gabriel got the Doves the opening major of the afternoon. Only 20 metres from goal, Gabriel outmuscled Lions ruckman Trent Wreford from the throw in, snapping a goal from nowhere. A clever piece of work from Pakenham's Jake Thompson gave the visitors the perfect reply only minutes later with a snap goal, but the Doves were full of life, playing a tough brand of footy through the likes of Mitch Cotter, Matt Stapleton and the highly touted Gach Nyuon, who was leaping high into the sky to give the home side first use. But after taking the seven point lead into quarter time, it began to unravel. The Lions started getting it on their own terms, but some wasteful goal kicking in the third quarter - 2.4, squandered a chance to gain a considerable lead, and had to be content with a five point margin heading into the final term. With Liam Tyrrell oozing class, Chris Cardona and James Harrison providing valuable leadership, the Lions roared home with some impressive pressure, restricting the Doves to just one more goal for the match, a Mitch Cotter set shot after the final siren. Pakenham coach Ash Green was proud that his side was able to grab the win in trying conditions.

Officer forward Jesse Longmuir is happy after his first quarter goal. 179817 "We came into the weekend knowing it wasn't going to be high scoring, similar to the other games," he said. "It was really pleasing seeing the work rate at the weekend; we worked extremely hard to get the result." While the Lions managed 5.12 and could have potentially won by more than just six points, Green highlighted some key areas that were dominated by his team. "Our defensive stuff, tackling and pressure were great, and we got some reward for that, but our kicking wasn't straight," he said. "Overall we had some really good signs." Thursday, 19 April, 2018

Casey wears down Werribee By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons have claimed back-toback wins to begin their 2018 VFL season. In what was a hard-fought battle against Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday night, the Demons fought back after a slow start to take care of the Tigers. With Werribee taking a one goal lead into quarter time, it was the Tigers who came out with intensity and took their chances going forward. Jayden Hunt was impressive for Casey, but the first half was won by Werribee, with the home team up by 11-points at the main break. Werribee's intensity and attack on the ball was outstanding, but Casey weren't lacking in that department either. The likes of Joel Smith and Mitch King were making their presence known as Casey competed with Werribee's big bodies. Thomas Gribble and Ben Moloney were everywhere for Werribee and the Tigers were looking irresistible as they held a three-goal lead in the third quarter. The Tigers early third quarter form threatened to tear apart the game, but the Demons had other ideas. A Tim Smith banana goal from deep in the pocket halfway through the term cut into the lead, and then two quicks goals from AFL-listed players Cam Pedersen and Jayden Hunt had Casey well within striking distance. When Sam Weideman booted his first major for the day with time running down, Casey found themselves with a two-point lead at the final change. That barrage not only got Casey back into the contest, it gave the team a renewed sense of confidence as they took the game on and were duly rewarded. Corey Maynard was too slick for Werribee in the opening minutes of the final term as

he slotted a beautiful running goal to push Casey's lead out to eight points. Jason Robinson replied for Werribee, as he put one through at the five minute mark. With a goal needed, it was Harley Balic who produced the goods for Casey. A terrific snap from a pack of players highlighted his goalsense and ability to find room when there appears to be none. Casey's senior players took over the game late as their ability to control possession and use up the clock proved crucial. Despite their possession dominance, Casey's attacking forays were mostly thwarted by Werribee's defence, but the Tigers could only hold them out for so long. With just minutes remaining, Cam Pedersen slotted his second major of the night and Casey looked home. They were - claiming a brilliant come-frombehind win against a valiant Werribee team; 8.7 (55) to 10.11 (71). Jay Lockhart and Billy Stretch were in fine form for Casey and there's no doubt that Jayden Hunt pushed his case for a senior recall in a dominant best-on-ground performance. His trademark run and carry were on full display, as was his ability to battle in oneon-one contests. Despite some wayward kicking and missed opportunities in the forward line, it was Casey's defence that really stood up, holding Werribee to just three goals in the second half. That defensive effort was led by Mitch White who was a general down back for the Demons. The Demons now sit on top of the ladder after two rounds, boasting a very healthy percentage of 196. Round three action will see Casey will travel to Richmond, taking on the Tigers at the Swinburne Centre on Sunday afternoon in what should be a terrific contest.

A breakthrough Victorian title for Trish In almost three decades of speedway racing, Trish Dike had never been able to win a Victorian title. However, last Sunday on home soil at Drouin Speedway, she finally managed to get the monkey off her back. Having spent the last few seasons contesting Ladies Standard Saloons, Trish had previously come close to achieving Victorian title success, qualifying on pole for the 2011 running of the event at Darlington’s Mid-Western Speedway, before unfortunately being pushed wide by a lapped car and ultimately coming second. Determined to go one better in last Sunday’s Victorian Title, the competitive racer, who is based in Eumemmerring, tried to keep her nerves at bay during the event, placing second in her first heat race and fifth in heatrace two due to experiencing clutch problems. Trish put in a hard-charging performance, driving from position seven to take the win, before later finding out that she had qualified in pole position for the Victorian title-deciding feature race. Trish managed to make the most of her start, taking the early lead and holding her position on the pole line on what was a smooth track surface. Following a few stoppages, where she was able to retain her lead, Trish eventually saw the white flag and knew that success was just moments away. Reminding herself to breathe as she completed her final lap, Trish didn’t put a foot wrong, going on to claim what could only be described as an emotion-charged victory. “I was absolutely ecstatic when I crossed the finish line in first place and realised that I’d just won the Victorian title,” commented Trish, who, along with fellow racer Michelle Sinclair, created history by becoming the first ever nannas to occupy the front row in a Victorian title. “There were so many emotions in the cockpit and I was quite overwhelmed by them all, particularly the relief of finally managing to pull it off after being second numerous times previously, as well as seeing my son Cam place second in the men’s Victorian title. “To say that it’s a huge family effort would be an understatement. I had so many family members and friends at the track cheering 50 STAR NEWS
