THE LATEST IN FOOD

Will you be getting a flu shot this year? About this time every year businesses, chemists, doctors, workplaces, community health clinics and some schools start mentioning the arrival of the latest flu vaccine and each year it becomes a discussion around the office. This year the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee has recommended the Therapeutic Goods Administrator adopt the September 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for the strains to be covered by the 2018 seasonal influenza vaccines. This year there's s choice of three or four strains of influenza including one from Brisbane that was developed after last year's horrendous flu season. Experts say the vaccine lasts three to four months and the peak flu period varies so when is the best time to roll up your sleeve. AMA president Dr Michael Gannon says late April, early May is the best time. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

THEATRE PURCHASE POSSIBLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Councillors are calling for a report into the possibility of council purchasing the Majestic Theatre at Pomona. The State Heritage-listed Majestic Theatre, the only silent movie theatre in the world, is managed by Pomona Arts Inc (PAI), run by a group of volunteers who established only eight months ago, having inherited an overdraft and mortgage. PAI manages the Majestic Theatre, The Railway Station Gallery and the Pomona Country Markets. Councillors at Mondays General Committee meeting praised the efforts of PAI for their hard work and success in operating the theatre but with heavy costs and maintenance required on the ageing building the community group is in need of financial assistance. Cr Frank Pardon said when he looked at the value of the building and the

opportunity to purchase it with no interest, buying it was "a no-brainer". "You can't buy a house for the cost of this," he said. He said considering the success of the newly formed PAI if the mortgage costs were removed they could likely go on into perpetuity. He named other buildings including the Butter Factory in Cooroy, Tait Duke House, the Cooroy Memorial Hall which council had assisted financially. Mayor Tony Wellington said council needed more ageing assets like a hole in the head and council should see if the organisation could reach sustainability. Cr Ingrid Jackson said she supported saving Pomona's Majestic Theatre. She said the community have a lot of people contributing to make it work and the community in Pomona and across Noosa enjoyed the Majestic Theatre. The building was State Heritage listed

and she believed Noosa should play a role to protect it. But she wanted to see a business case to see financial figures to know what the costs would be into the future and what the capacity of PAI was to fund it. Council officers recommended council undertake a condition assessment of the 1921 building with a view to developing a Conservation Management Plan and maintenance in conjunction with PAI. They recommend assisting the PAI on condition the with a one-off payment of $16, 667 from the Heritage Levy on condition it was used for heritage activities and PAI develop a business plan to improve its financial position to achieve sustainability over three years and increases its partnership with Tourism Noosa. Council will decide on the recommendation at its Ordinary Meeting on 19 April. ●

WAR PRACTISE MAKES COAST A BLAST ZONE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Grenades, mortars and anti-tank ammunition have been discovered in Noosa, left-over from military activity in World War II, and air-to-ground rockets and bombs were used in the area. As ANZAC Day approaches Noosa Today contacted the Australian Defence Force to discover what military activity occurred on the coast from Coolum to Noosa Heads to rate the area as an unexploded ordinance (UXO) hot spot. The ADF has compiled a map that shows where UXOs have been found. The area from Coolum to Noosa Heads is marked in red indicating a substantial occurrence of UXO. An ADF spokesperson said SouthEast Queensland was a major staging and training location for Commonwealth and Allied Forces during WWII and the region around Noosa to Coolum Beach was used by a number of Commonwealth formations and units for encampment and training purposes during this time. "The Australian 7th Division had brigades based at Caboolture, Kilcoy and Woombye in 1943. To support this level of activity a large artillery range was established north of Caloundra, which was used between 1939 and 1944 for artillery, infantry and armour live firing and demonstrations," the spokesperson said.

ADF map showing UXO zone in red. "Another artillery range, the NoosaPeregian Artillery Range, was established in late 1942 south of Noosa to Mt Peregian (Emu Mountain). The area was used by Australian Commonwealth Forces for military field firing and encampment purposes until 1959." "Many types of ammunition were used during military training on these ranges. The types of UXO discovered in this area cover a broad range of that ammunition, including grenades, mortars, and anti-tank and artillery ammunition. There is evidence some areas were also used for air-to-ground practices including rocket, gunnery and bombing."

It wasn't until an increase in developments in the late 1980s that ADF identified the areas and levels of UXO contamination. Working with council and the Environmental Protection Agency ADF supplied safety information to the public and UXO remediation was undertaken to enable development. It was generally conducted by commercial UXO companies with ADF support, the ADF spokesperson said. ADF continues to advise on the management of the area. Defence advises anyone suspecting they have found a UXO should contact police who would request ADF assistance to either remove it, dispose of it or demolish it on site. ADF says there are no known instances in Australia where an incidentally discovered item of UXO has injured a member of the public. However UXO can be dangerous if disturbed or handled. If found do not touch, note its appearance and location. If possible take its photograph, inform the property owner and police. To view ADF's UXO map visit http://52.65.9.125 and for more information visit http://www.defence.gov.au/uxo/. ●

HITTING THE HIGH NOTES Young rock loving music sensation Morgan Smith is wowing audiences wherever he performs. It just comes naturally for the 10-yearold Noosa boy who thinks his singing and guitar abilities are normal - it's just what you do. Morgan's mum Lorraine said it was just "who he is". "He just absolutely loves it. He says he'll be playing like Jimi Hendrix one day," she said. "He wants to make it big time." Lorraine said since he was old enough to hold a stick he was tapping out tunes. She believes it's in the genes with a number of extended family members musically inclined. It's surprising to find out Morgan only started guitar lessons a year ago but he hasn't wasted any time getting out into the music scene. He has performed at several venues including the Noosa Heads Surf Club and Imperial Hotel. He recently obtained his busking licence, played at the Pomona Music Muster and has been out and about looking for the best busking spots around the area. Keep an eye out for Morgan around the traps or see more on his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MorganMusic-760797314113929/ ●

COVER STORY Ann Podobnik, Jeanette Alfredson and Brian O'Connor at Noosa Shire Museum. Pictures: DAVE GLEESON surfshots.com.au

KEEPERS OF HISTORY BY MARGARET MACCOLL tepping into the Noosa Shire Museum at Pomona is like being transported to a past time. Its rabbit warren-like rooms are laden with treasures, which tell the story of the shire. At each turn there are items of interest from photographs and clothing to documents and displays. Significantly, the museum is also the Keeping Place of objects and memorabilia sacred to the local Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi people, setting it apart from regional museums that restrict their displays to European history. The museum is no longer a place where history is stored away in boxes. It has changed its focus to become an information and education centre relevant to present day life, according to Cooroora Historical Society president Jeanette Alfredson. Noosa Today dropped by the facility recently to speak to the keepers of the regions history.

S

The Noosa Shire Museum has been based in Pomona since the mid-1980s at the former Shire Council Chambers, which moved to its current facility at Tewantin in 1980. The museum is operated by a committee and a group of dedicated volunteers and one paid employee, operations and development officer Ann Podobnik. Jeanette was among the museum's founders, members of the Cooroora Historical Society, who lobbied Noosa Council to establish the Heritage Levy which helps preserve the shire's significant buildings and culture. As a descendant of one of the area's pioneering European families Jeanette has a long-standing interest in the shire's history. Her family was a timber family whose father operated his business from Pomona's Alfredson building which now houses a brewery. After WWII housing was in short supply and her father, a cabinetmaker, built pre-cut houses which were sent by rail

across the state to be assembled. The museum's role has been to preserve and interpret its past. It contains 6000 items of historical significance and 1500 manuscripts and family histories. The museum also houses an extensive and impressive collection of 9000 photographs, capturing many moments of the shire's pioneering past as well as modern moments that will one day be an important part of local history. Ann said her role has included sorting through collections that had been stored away for 30 years. "About 90 per cent of the collection has come out of storage boxes. It's a good opportunity to show the community what we're housing," she said. The museum benefits from a small annual grant from the Council. However, this year, Noosa Council set aside an additional $20,000 to help the Cooroora Historical Society prepare a new strategic plan, train volunteers in conservation practices and purchase a computer program,

known as Mosaic, which is used to track the collection items and report on each item's history and condition. The museum has embarked on its plan to make its collection more relevant to visitors by reorganising exhibits into 'themes' of history, innovation, environment, community engagement and education and are beginning a process of refreshing displays. "We should be relevant to what is happening today," Jeanette said. "There's a responsibility to the community to provide information on social issues." Committee member Brian O'Connor said two matters which stood out in the review were the need to do more to focus on coastal Noosa history and to showcase local Indigenous culture. Brian said through its participation in the review those who guide the museum have been challenged to accept change and have become emboldened with the confidence to tackle it head-on.

The museum has an extensive range of historic clothing.

Wedding clothing through the ages will feature at the museum in May.

"We realise that, while our task is to preserve and interpret the past, it is not where our thinking belongs," he said. The changes wrought by this process have already begun in the areas of governance, removing items for sale and procurement, he said. "And we realise more the importance of our volunteers and the additional training we must give them." The museum is also co-operating with Pomona's other historic sites to enhance the historic experience for visitors. The museum and the Majestic Theatre aim to attract visitors for a 'blast of the past', combining a silent movie, lunch in the park and a guided tour of the museum and its memorabilia.

"So interpreting ourselves and who we are ... the Noosa Shire Museum sits at the heart of Noosa Shire's Living Heritage Town at the centre of the Noosa Biosphere. That is a pretty important space to occupy. We should be the Biosphere Museum. That sets us apart from other museums in country towns. Ours is a bigger role, on behalf of the entire shire. Noosa's story is important and needs to be told well." Yesterday was World Heritage Day and marked the beginning of the Australian Heritage Festival which continues into May. The Noosa Shire Museum will celebrate the occasion with two major events showcasing its spectacular collection from weddings through the ages.

The museum welcomes visitors from far and wide. Jeanette said about 10-15 per cent came from Britain, some from New Zealand and many from Victoria. "A lot of people come here to do their family histories," she said. In addition a steady stream of students visit as part of their school curriculum and learn about the changes that have happened over time. Brian said the museum provided people with a sense of place. He sees the museum having a significant role to play in relation to the Noosa Biosphere "We are a people that, in everything we do, we must consider our impact on the environment ... and that goes to the heart of how we live," he said.

Dennis Massoud on Noosa beach.

SCULPTURES OF SAND Cooroy Fusion Festival will be highlighting all that is fantastic about the beautiful Noosa Hinterland. One of those is how close it is to the beautiful beach at Noosa Heads so this year thanks to the sponsorship of Tourism Noosa, the festival will bring the beach to the hinterland with the help of renowned sand sculptor, Dennis Massoud. "Based in Noosa, Dennis Massoud is a world champion sand sculptor and has turned sand sculpting into a performing art. He has sculpted sand around the world, and at most major events throughout Australia and his sculptures have been used in television advertisements. So, having him at Fusion Festival just made perfect sense." "In addition to creating a work of art in front of the

Butter Factory on the day, Dennis will also be sharing some of his skills and secrets by way of workshops in the afternoon" event organiser Chris Bell said. Other activities at Cooroy Fusion Festival include an Entertainment Tent; Cooroy Library activities; Cooroy RSL Pickled Possum Bar; Cooroy IGA Tastes of the Hinterland Marquee; Mother's Day Activities; Geckoes Wildlife Show and a Rock Climbing Wall. There is also the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Annual Show in the Memorial Hall, displays at Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Camphor Laurel, and the Butter Factory Arts Centre; plus market stalls and many other free activities such as rides, face painting and a great entertainment program. For more information on the festival head to www.cooroyfusionfestival.com.au ●

Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will work together over the next three months on its coastal fox control program in coastal bushland from Mudjimba to Peregian. The European red fox is a declared pest in Queensland, and the program is designed to control fox breeding activity and reduce fox predation on native species such as the water mouse, ground parrots and loggerhead turtles at the egg and hatchling stage. The program will run until June 2018. Cr Jenny McKay said the program had run for three years with more than 100 foxes removed from beaches and coastal reserves and more than 150 fox dens inspected for signs of activity and control. “Our aim is to protect our native species in these areas so it’s important that we ensure the coastal fox population doesn’t recover to pre-control levels,” she said. The control program involves the use of fox detection dogs to locate dens, monitoring cameras, soft catch traps and baiting. Nearby residents will be notified and areas affected by the control program will be clearly identified by warning signs.

NEW PERCH SPECIES FOUND In the past 12 months, Queensland Museum Ichthyologist Jeff Johnson has described eight new species of Sand Perch, and the most recent Parapercis algrahami, can be found along the eastern Australian coastline from Townsville right down to Sydney. Mr Johnson and the team of scientists at the Queensland Museum use a variety of techniques to identify new species of fish from colour, morphology and DNA testing. Many of these new species of fish have been caught by deep sea trawlers, but it just goes to show, you never know if today’s catch could be a new species of fish waiting to be described! ●

TRAVELLING ECONOMY FOR CANCER BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Chris Murray readies his Shitbox Rally car. travelling an average 600km/day over a week from 19-25 May over as many dirt roads as they can track down. As the name suggests the cars must be two-wheel not 4WD and cost the teams no more than $1000 but part

of the challenge is making sure they all reach the finish line where they are auctioned off. Each team fundraises a minimum of $4000 for the Cancer Council and this year's target is $1,400,000.

Chris and Cameron have already raised more than $3000. To donate to Cancer Council and support the Distinguished Jetsetters visit https:// donate18.shitboxrally.com.au/ distinguished-jet-setters ● 12384982-ACM16-18

It was four years in the making but finally Chris Murray and his son Cameron have made it into the Shitbox Rally and their Distinguished Jetsetters team will be ready to roll in May. Chris has personal reasons for entering the event to raise money for Cancer Council. Not only has the former pilot beaten serious bouts of cancer - twice - his father died from bowel cancer and his hospital experiences made him very aware of the damage the disease inflicts on families. "The saddest thing for me was during my radiation treatment to see the number of young children waiting to receive their treatments," he said. "I'd wonder whether they'd be there the next time. "I've had a reasonable life. They're just starting off." Having been a pilot with Qantas for almost 40 years Chris has seen more of the world than most and seen the industry change enormously. When he first started flying to London the return journey would include 24 refuelling stops, landing in some exotic places. The annual Shitbox Rally is Cancer Council's largest community-led fundraiser. There will be about 200 cars in the rally and a further 25 support vehicles

YOUNG STARTERS PITCH IDEAS Setting up local fish cleaning facilities around the Noosa waterways and helping the elderly with internet technology were among the business ideas raised last week at Innovate Noosa's Young Starters Pitch like a Pro workshop. The workshop attracted 17 young people aged 16-24 years, including a group from the Noosa Community Training Centre, who were mentored by young entrepreneur Macca Reardon. Spokeswoman Kate Bowmaker said the

event aimed to help young locals progress their business ideas and help solve problems they encountered. "They were taken through a series of activities, which included defining the problem, the target audience, the value of the idea and what they'd need to progress their venture to the next stage," she said. An innovation networking evening followed the workshop and was attended by 75 local business people and state and local government politicians. It promoted the

sharing of new projects being developed in the region "The networking evening was also a chance for some of the young participants to share the ideas they'd started working on during the workshop to a captive audience of business leaders," Kate said. "Young participants reiterated to the group the need for these training and workshop opportunities, and to continue to focus on building the innovation ecosystem in Noosa."

In a broader project Innovate Noosa in partnership with CCIQ Noosa has received federal government funding to create a "capacity development tool" specific to the Noosa region. The tool, scheduled for release in July, will give Noosa residents access to guidance and tips for starting a new business venture, along with information about the resources available to them in the Noosa region such as mentoring groups, courses and coworking spaces, Kate said. ● 12385223-RA17-18

ON THE TRAIL OF THE HINTERLAND Stakeholder feedback is being sought from bike clubs, commercial operators, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services, community groups and Noosa Council to form the Noosa Trail Network Master Plan. The project to maximise the recreational use of Noosa's eight hinterland trails is being led by Tourism Noosa and conducted in partnership with Noosa and District Landcare and Noosa Council's Economic Development Department. The trails pass through national park, state forest, private property, council parks and road reserves. A grant of about $20,000 from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation has been awarded for a trails consultant to develop an action and implementation plan based on stakeholder feedback. NBRF deputy chair Clare Cartwright said the master plan's purpose was to "raise the profile of our biosphere reserve and enhance the experience for bushwalkers and mountain bikers". "The plan will address ways to prevent misuse of environmental assets through improving trails, infrastructure requirements as well as addressing issues such as erosion and revegetation. "It will also identify economic benefits for the community such as funding models, sustainable jobs, tourism, trail markings and educational information." SNAPPY SHORTS SHOWN OFF Globe-trotting pilot Ben Sheriff is combining his travel time and love of photography in a new retail business creating Rwenzori shorts. "Last year I got the idea of putting my photos on to swimming shorts for men," he said. Ben designed the shorts in a European style, cut above the knee with side buckles, and has them made in China. The photos, including drone shots, he has snapped in some amazing locations including the French Riviera, Hawaii, the Philippines, South America, Bali and Noosa. One of the most difficult aspects of the business was coming up with a name that suited the product and was unique on social media. "I went travelling and thought something will pop up, it'll be unique and I'll take that

on board," he said. The name Rwenzori he found while in Africa. The Rwenzori Mountains are a World Heritage Site located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Ben grew up in Noosa and learnt to fly at the Sunshine Coast airport. After gaining his pilots licence at 19 years of age he headed off to Western Australia to fly. He progressed from there to pilot planes for Jetstar and other small companies. Now he flies the "big jets" working for a Japanese airline. Based in Tokyo he describes his flying career as "fun and rewarding" and he still manages to visit Noosa on a regular basis. Ben's shorts are available online at www. rwenzori.com.au ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE

RON LANE

MEN’S SHED EXTENSION FOR NOOSA The first visit to the Noosa Men's Shed by Noosa Today was to cover the hand-over of a ride on mower by representatives of the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club and it was indeed an eye opener. To see first- hand the buildings, lawns and gardens that were spread over 2.5 acre block of land was indeed inspiring. Now some ten weeks later the occasion for the return visit was to attend the opening of the extention of an existing building. This building, to be used for the purpose of wood turning was henceforth to be known as the Gordon Craig Shed; a mark of respect to a member who had recently lost his battle with cancer. Built under the supervision of one of their members retired local builder Ray McEwan it covers an area of 6x6 mts; consists of a concrete floor, timber frame and a roof of trim deck sheeting. On the floor stands the required work benches plus the necessary machinery that is consistent with wood turning. All in all a fitting tribute to a past and highly regarded mate. To mark the occasion and perform the small ceremony local member Sandy Bolton was the invited guest. Before a gathering of some 35 Shed members President Paul Asbury introduced the guest of honor and then thanked and congratulated all who were involved in the project. He then invited Vice President Ian Broardfoot to give details and information regarding the construction. When also extending his thanks to the members he drew a laugh when he

remarked, "At our elderly stage of life ageing is inevitable but when you are with good friends happiness is a part of lifes journey." When one witnesses the spirit and mateship that exists their successes are understandable. In performing the opening Ms. Bolton also extended her best wishers and in particular drew attention to those "in our local community who have made contributions to this project. And regarding the grant that you received, those thousands of dollars that helped make this a reality will, in times to come be worth millions in good will and friendship." Immediately following, vice-president Broardfoot presented Ms. Bolton with a beautiful hand carved wooden bowl in recognition of her attendance; this was in fact the first such article to come from the workshop. Also in attendance was Ken Kipping, State Representative for Sunshine Coast Sheds and member of the State Committee. "What these men have achieved is amazing. A short time ago they had just 34 members now it is 220; and to think that the local Catholic Parish took the roof off their carpark and donated it to the building tells us that this group is indeed held in high regard throughout the community. There are now 184 Sheds throughout Queensland and we are still growing." A great organization with a major role to play within the borders of our shire; and they are all- Our people. ●

ARTISTS LEARN TO BEAT BURNOUT Students travelled from Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to join the University of the Sunshine Coast's inaugural Master of Performing Arts course which graduated last Friday. Drama lecturer Dr Lynne Bradley said the course stood out for looking at both artistic skills development and long-term career sustainability. "We have a strong focus on mental health, so we have a whole unit in mental health and psychology. A lot of artists can be very sensitive and the nature of the performing industry is very high-pressure, so we need to build mental tenacity and strategies for self-care," she said. "We also had a boot camp on financial literacy because the aim is to thrive, not just survive in the arts."

IN THE SWIM - WHAT’S UP SKIP? Tourists on Andy Phipps' (Phippsy) Smooth Water Charters were treated to an unexpected wildlife encounter last week when a kangaroo swam past the boat off Makepeace Island in the Noosa River and

it happened just after they'd hooked a bull shark. Andy said once up river from the Noosa North Shore ferry crossing wildlife was abundant and it was not uncommon to see

kangaroos, wallabies and even wild pigs swimming across the river. "I see them every day. There are plenty of kangaroos. One day I saw a koala sitting in a mangrove tree." ●

Residents are using too many councilprovided dog-poo bags and council is calling for restraint. A council spokesman said the call followed a massive spike in the number of bags taken from local dispensers. "In one area we're struggling to refill the dispensers fast enough," he said. "On Gympie Terrace alone we went through more than 2000 bags in 24 hours and that was midweek. Previous usage is around 350 for a week day and 1000 across a weekend. "We're pleased to see people cleaning up after their pets, but clearly some people are either taking more bags than they need or simply taking them for other uses. Council staff have noticed the run on bags after switching to new compostable bags. Made from corn starch and containing no plastic they break down into organic matter. APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION Apparently not despondent about the 30th straight newspoll of polling behind Labor, the government ministers continue to follow a set of policies that makes them look lemming-like in their desire for destruction in the next election. How can a group of supposedly literate people be ignorant of the huge potential of renewable energy with storage? “Base load” is a meaningless term with solar and adequate storage, as has been proven in South Australia where the new Tesla battery bank has picked up the slack in milliseconds when power was needed. The formation of the Monash Forum places the right wing of the conservative parties in close association with flat earthers, holocaust deniers, and creationists. The Monash family has even come out disassociating the name of Sir John with the antiscience and anti-intellectualism offered by the Monash Forum. How can sanity in government decisions be expected when such an atrocious stance is taken by a former prime minister and socalled leaders in the Coalition? Steve Hall, Cooroy

IS MEAT ESSENTIAL? The current debate surrounding the proposed abattoir seems to stem on the pro side from a belief that meat is an essential part of a healthy diet. The largest population and research studies ever done by the most highly regarded universities and organisations find exactly the opposite. Even on our own Australian government’s website regarding red and processed meat identifies convincing evidence that increased consumption of red and processed meat with increased risk of colorectal cancer (referenced is the World Cancer Research Fund and The American Institute for Cancer Research). The World Health Organisation conducted a formal investigation into red and processed meat, assembling 22 experts from 10 countries looking at 800 studies from around the world including Australia. Interestingly prior to viewing the evidence the panel was divided in their opinions, after however, they were unanimous and placed processed meats (e.g. bacon, ham and sausages) in the top category class 1 carcinogens, the same category as asbestos and tobacco, and red meat as a class

longest-living populations all featured diets that were 95 per cent and more plant-based. Two separate dietary interventions were done by Dr Ornish and Dr Esselstyn on patients suffering from chronic heart disease by giving them a whole food (non-processed) plant based diet similar to the ones found in regions that have virtually nil deaths from the disease and were able to stop and in a number of patients actually reverse their disease. Dr Ornish’s diet has been voted the number one heart diet in the US for the past seven years. Dr Esselstyn claims heart disease need never exist while it remains our biggest killer. Major studies by Harvard University involving 170,000 participants dating back to 1976 with 24,000 previously healthy individuals dying by 2008, 15,000 from heart disease and cancer with the researchers finding: “Red meat is associated with an increased risk of total cardio vascular disease and cancer mortality. Substitution of other healthier protein sources for red meat is associated with lower mortality risk”. The largest study of diet and health in history was the NIHAARP study, involving 545,000 participants over the course of a decade. The researchers agreed with Harvard - meat consumption increased the risk from dying of heart disease, cancer and just dying prematurely in general. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (named the EPIC study) by Oxford University involved 512,000 participants from 10 countries over nine years. A 2013 study of the full EPIC database found a significant correlation between meat and processed meat and all-cause

mortality. They also found that meat is significantly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. The Adventist studies by the American Cancer Society found: “Not eating meat is important because it seems to have an impact on heart disease and cancer”. They also found that weekly consumption of meat over a 17-year period increased the risk of diabetes by 74 per cent over that of vegetarians, with vegans having the lowest risk overall. Since 1960 meat consumption in Australia has more than doubled and so has bowel cancer, while in some parts of the world the disease is virtually non-existent - every one of those areas is where a plantbased diet is consumed. Major population studies like the China Study support these findings, with researchers from Oxford and Cornell University’s finding the highest rates of cancer (up to 100 times) were found in the regions with the highest rates of animal consumption. In response to your article regarding Pomona’s Majestic Theatre, I would like to assure your readers and the community, that Pomona Arts Inc. is in good hands and trading profitably. It is true we inherited debts and an overdraft from the previous management, and seek council support, however I like to point out that the new committee, which was formed on the 24 June last year has turned things around, especially for the Majestic Theatre, which was struggling to meet overheads. Our dedicated committee, and enthusiastic bunch of volunteers, with the support of the local community, has ensured the doors stay open, and we have posted a record profit for their first six months of trading. President Cherry Bright’s commitment to bring more shows and events to the Majestic has resulted in increased profits and lots of fun for the community and our happy bunch of vollies. The Railway Station Gallery and Pomona Country markets are also part of Pomona Arts Inc, providing a vital service for the arts and the local community. To be part of the friendly family of volunteers, give The Majestic a call on 5485 2330 or come to one of our many fabulous events. All the funds from ticket sales, memberships and donations all help keep the theatre alive. All donations are gratefully received and are tax-deductible. Rose Berry, Treasurer Pomona Arts Inc.

Once in a Lifetime

46 Elanda Street, Sunshine Beach Owned by the one family since 1966, 46 Elanda holds the highest position in the street & once commanded 360 degree views of the ocean & district.

A couple of hundred metres stroll to the beach & surf club, less to the shops & restaurants that have made Sunshine Beach one of the most desirable locations in Noosa to live, this is prime investment grade real estate. One of only a handful of houses in Sunshine Beach when built in 1970, it is a large solid brick construction with an over-sized double garage on WKH JURXQG ÂżRRU DQG EHGURRPV ZLWK EDWKURRP and kitchenette behind.

Retaining its character all these years, it is a classic 1970s style home & in near original presentation. A remarkable step back in time, this home has not just been owned by the one family, it is part of the family, and a little part of Sunshine Beach history. But now the decision is made, the home must be sold at auction or before. Zoned for duplex redevelopment, it offers an array of exciting options to its new owners. 5HQRYDWH WR FUHDWH D PDJQLžFHQW KRPH * Renovate to split into two apartments * Rebuild as new contemporary duplex or home

HIGHLIGHT HOME

VALUE BUYING IN A GREAT AREA WHILE all of Noosa has enjoyed strong price growth over the past three years, the Doonella estate remains a stand out. With its new homes and native landscapes, forest trails and parks, it is a neighbourhood embracing its natural environment, inspiring outdoor activities. Doonella is an easy two-minute drive to the local bakery, bottle shop or Thai restaurant for takeaway, a four-minute drive to Noosa Civic and a four-minute walk to schools, and just five minutes to the Yacht Club on Gympie Terrace. You’ll meet the neighbours walking the forest trails in the mornings, at the Park Run on Saturdays, or in the front garden of a Sunday afternoon. This is easy living in the heart of Noosaville. And on a lovely tree-lined street within the established Stage 1 of Doonella, is this immaculately presented single-level home. From the welcoming front entry of this contemporary home and every step throughout, you can see this is a meticulously maintained property. You will enjoy the spacious open plan living zone with soaring ceilings, the neutral colour palette and easy-care large format tiled floor. And you will love the modern kitchen with Caesarstone bench tops, 900mm oven and large pantry perfectly positioned for entertaining. You will appreciate the peace and privacy of a master suite with walk-in robe

and ensuite well away from children’s or guest bedrooms, a built-in study in the hallway to the master, white plantation shutters adorning bedroom windows, and an oversized garage with gleaming epoxy flooring. A large level north-facing rear yard with established low-maintenance landscaping

hugs a covered patio, providing for comfortable year-round outdoor entertaining or simple alfresco dining, with room for a pool or a game of cricket. This property also features plantation shutters and screens on all windows, cool air-conditioning and ceiling fans throughout, Brita water filter tap and

5000-litre underground rainwater tank and to keep the gardens beautiful with ease a watering system has been installed. The garage is easy care with an Epoxy coating to the floor. This is value buying for a modern home in a great area showing strong capital growth. ●

ON THE COVER

LOCALS PUT GREEN FOCUS ON BUILDS AS children in the 1980s, Alex Rigby and his fellow Altum Property Group director Rob McCready had epic adventures around what is now the Noosa Springs resort. Today the local developers are responsible for the hugely-popular Parkridge Noosa community. “Both Rob and I have lived around Noosa since we were young children,” Mr Rigby said. “We used to play within what is now the Parkridge site as kids so we have developed a real affinity with the area as well as an understanding of what is required to ensure it is in keeping with the local environment.” With sweeping, 180-degree water views and surrounded by protected bushland, it’s easy to see why the pair are so passionate about ensuring Parkridge Noosa fulfils its obligation as a high-quality, sustainable development. Mr McCready is a licensed builder with over 21 years of experience in design, construction management and sustainable building, and Mr Rigby has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Property Economics and 20 years in property development. The pair came together a decade ago to create Altum Property Group. “We first started working out of a three-bedroom house and one of the first projects we did was to build a new office complex,” Mr McCready said. “We chose Peregian to base ourselves because we saw a gap for a quality local builder with the same values as the people who live there, that means a strong focus on community, family and sustainability.” Over the years Altum has won dozens of industry awards for sustainability as well as quality workmanship and Mr McCready believed these are two key factors that separated Altum from the crowd. “Altum is the Latin word for sustainable and this is very much a focus of what we do in all aspects of our business,” he said. “We’ve always focused on creating projects which have been designed and built with sustainability in mind, we use hard-wearing, long-lasting materials where possible and offer our clients value for money options to help them choose a more sustainable building. “We have a simple and successful strategy to achieve affordable longterm sustainable building solutions that address climate change issues and reduce future energy costs. “At Parkridge, we continue this theme by offering buyers the opportunity to secure carbon neutral options within their residence.” Learn more at www.parkridgenoosa.com. ●

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND HOT TO TROT IN news that is likely to surprise virtually nobody, it’s been confirmed that Queensland apartment values are faltering. Don’t fear - this is good news for our landlords. Many experts in the industry have warned about an apartment oversupply in Queensland over the last 12 months with unit values slipping 1.3 per cent in the December quarter. The latest Queensland Market Monitor report from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) reveals that house prices increased slightly across the same period, listing from $460,000 to $467,375. The figure sat at $448,000 12 months ago. While the unit market’s lacklustre performance was not much of a shock, punters may be interested to note some surprising results throughout the state. Regional markets may be struggling, but the larger markets of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts are not. They have been solid performers over the past 12 months, with median values increasing around six per cent in both cities. Greater Brisbane’s housing market has also performed reasonably well over the past 12 months, with its annual median sale price growing by 3.6 per cent. “Noosa is the dearest market for threebedroom townhouses, with a median rent of $595 per week,“ the REIQ notes. For landlords, this is fantastic news, as it translates to that illusive double whammy of strong capital growth and high yields. ●

RAW VOCAL POWER HITS NOOSA BY HOLLIE HARRIS If you only go to one gig this year, this is it. Jon Stevens comes to Villa Noosa with his Best Of tour, traversing all the hits of his career, from his solo work, right through to Noiseworks, INXS, The Dead Daisies and even Jesus Christ Superstar. With a back catalogue jampacked with smash hits, and no shortage of great songs to choose from, the revered singersongwriter is looking forward to reliving the different times of his musical journey, and sharing those experiences with audiences. Hot off the heels of his latest release, Starlight, which received international acclaim after its release last year, Jon has picked 2018 as the time to embark on the tour that fans have been asking him to do for years. "After doing back-to-back albums - WOMAN in 2015 - and then Starlight in 2017, and touring those albums, I played a few of the older songs on those tours, but it was pretty much all new material," says Jon. "Fans are always asking me to play certain songs that I haven't done in years, so here we are in 2018 and it just feels like the right time to explore my back catalogue. It's interesting for me as I always try to keep moving forward, always adding something new, but I have to say that dusting off some of the old tunes has been nothing short of a revelation. "While I can't play every song, as there are way too many, I have chosen my favourites and I think fans will love it." With songs like Welcome To The World, Lock N Load, RIP Millie, Don't Change and Superstar, to name a few included in the setlist, the show is guaranteed to delight. While Jon has been working on the setlist over the festive break, ready to hit the road, he acknowledges that once the tour starts, it will no doubt be a work in progress. "It's been really difficult as there are so many songs, but I think there we have a good balance," he says. "But, by the same token, once we start touring I'm sure the fans will have their say in wanting to add to the setlist." Jon Stevens hasn't really stopped working touring, writing or recording - since he first started out in the industry as a young musician. More recently, the 2017 release of Starlight saw him cowriting and producing with Eurythmics legend Dave Stewart, who enlisted the great Ringo Starr on drums alongside Australia's own Orianthi and Richie Sambora on guitars. All that hard work has paid off, as Jon Stevens is now considered one of the country's premier artists. For Jon though, it is all about getting out on the road and connecting with fans - the most important part of his job. "My main focus now is getting out and performing all around Australia," he says. "Time seems to be going by at such a rapid rate and I have missed being on the road in Oz, as I have spent so much time overseas the last couple of years. We are going to play in as many places as possible over the next four months. I also spent January in the studio writing and recording and am well on the way to completing a new album. I will continue to create and experiment and do my very best every time I climb on the stage and share with the fans a moment in time that you only get when you see a performer live." See one of Australia's biggest music legends on Friday 4th May at 8pm, Villa Noosa Hotel. Tickets are only $39.80 via www.villanoosa.com. au and don't forget to book the courtesy bus online too! The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa

Jarrow by Expensive Hugs

Isle of Dogs

Dan Oke, the gent behind the tunes, has a firm hand on the rudder to steady what could be a wayward ship that veers between jangly, upbeat rock to some funked-up, vocal-affected bangers. Single Kelp is where it all kicks off in a very guitar-driven manner, scooping up some neat kit work alongside a simple-but-catchy melody. Dreams is an instrumental-surf noodler, Hybrid is a bit raw around the edges, Emoji coyly takes on some AutoTune-ish vocal effects and Season has some cheek to its lyrics as well as fun, chaotic guitar lines. Jarrow is criminally underrated and Expensive Hugs is just further proof that he should be on your radar. ●

Here's one for the family to together. Just out in cinemas and recieving 91% on Rotten Tomatoes comes the new stop-motion-animated film from writer/ director Wes Anderson, Isle of Dogs. An outbreak of canine flu in Japan leads all dogs to be quarantined on an island and a boy (voice of Koyu Rankin) journeys there to rescue his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber). He gets help from a pack of misfit canines who have also been exiled and his quest inspires a group of dog lovers to expose a government conspiracy. The voice cast also includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban, Greta Gerwig, and Yoko Ono. In cinemas now. Rated PG13. ●

A charming and original story of a single mother who is engaged to housekeep for a brilliant mathematics professor, who has lost his memory after a car accident. His short term memory lasts only 80 minutes. His ancient suit is pinned with scraps of paper, reminders to him of daily routines, and that the strange woman on his doorstep each morning is his housekeeper. When he discovers that she has a latchkey son he insists the boy comes to his house after school. He calls the boy "Root" after the square root symbol. The relationship between the three makes for delightful reading. Available at the Noosa Library. Review by Jenny Carter of Friends of the Noosa Library. ●

WHAT’S ON NON-STOP LAUGHTER AT THE MAJESTIC It's been two and a half years on the road for Women Like Us comedians Ellen Briggs and Mandy Nolan who have chalked up an impressive 72 shows performing to almost 20 000 people from Moree to Melbourne, Townsville to Tamworth, Bundaberg to Brisbane, Surfers to Sydney, Pottsville to Perth! Just 18 months ago they filled Perth's State Theatre and the Heath Ledger and after requests from fans in WA they made their way back to the Perth Fringe earlier this year where they scored themselves a nomination for Best Comedy Act at what is the world's third biggest Fringe Festival. Pretty impressive for a couple of wise cracking middle aged mums with too much muffin top and not enough restraint. The show is an hour of stand up comedy, half an hour a piece by these powerful, no holes barred, tell it how it is pin up girls for what they call Real Women. 'We want our comedy to demystify a lot of the garbage that we're fed about being women' says Briggs. 'We tell everyday stories about our struggles, our failure to parent, the beauty industry, getting fatter, strange surgeries, obsessions, frustrations, and at the end of the day 'who unpacks the dishwasher.' Women Like Us guarantees an hour of non stop laughter with crowds declaring it the funniest show they've seen. The most common refrain is 'I can't believe you girls aren't on TV!' TV wouldn't handle Women Like Us. It has to be seen to be believed.

FUNNY GIRL OPENS TONIGHT

Laugh 'til your sides hurt this Saturday 21 April. Doors Open 7.30pm and the show starts at 8pm at the Majestic The-

This "exhilarating" musical celebrates the exuberant and elegant flavour of Broadway in 1910s and 20s, and tells the real life story of beloved singer, actress and comedienne Fanny Brice, whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her (despite the discouragement of her friends and neighbours, who tell her that she isn't pretty enough for the stage), rise from Brooklyn music hall singer to Broadway star. As she awaits her husband's release from prison (entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein), Fanny reflects on her incredible true story in a series of flashbacks. Cut price preview tonight at 7.30pm. Evenings: April 19, 20, 25, 26, 27. May 2, 3, 4, 5 at 7.30pm Matinees: April 21, 22, 28, 29 at 2pm Adults $38 | Concession $33 Member/Group $31 | U18 $28 Tickets from www.noosaartstheatre. org.au or the Box Office at 163 Weyba Road, Noosaville, Tuesday to Friday 10am to 2pm. ●

YUM-MUNDI IS ONE FOR THE FOODIES BY HOLLIE HARRIS The menu at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi has some fabulous new additions that will be sure to impress the foodies in your tribe on your next visit. Head chef Cale Dempsey says his menu features fresh, seasonal produce with classic pub favourites and a selection of contemporary dishes. "Fresh and local is where it's at," says Cale, adding that the menu "features some great flavour combinations that all match well with a Eumundi Brewery beer." The Imperial Hotel is of course home to the Eumundi Brewery, with a range of magnificent brews on offer including the popular Eumundi Brewery Lager, Eumundi Brewery Pale Ale and other seasonal beers. Delicious new additions to the dining menu include gold band snapper croquettes with a smoky romesco sauce; seared scallops on a saffron cauliflower puree with prosciutto shards + a sensational watermelon rice noodle salad. Stand-out new mains include a mouthwatering Braised beef cheeks on soft polenta with roasted Dutch carrots and finished with a red wine jus; and a prawn and chorizo pappardelle tossed with cherry tomatoes, red onion and pesto cream sauce, then topped with ricotta and lemon zest. Another main that had us wanting more was the wild mushroom and thyme gnocchi with baby spinach in a truffle oil cream.

A stunning selection of meals to choose from at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi.

Head chef Cale Dempsey.

Seriously good food. The Imperial has long boasted a fine selection of burgers (including Wagyu beef or cajun chicken and bacon), and they've now introduced a new player - a yellowfin seared tuna burger with avocado salsa, pickled cucumber and wasabi mayonnaise

well received. A terrific match with the local brews too. And let's not forget the kids. Only $5 for 'Little Munchkins' meals with any main purchased and a fantastic kids room to keep them entertained. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner (and all day dining on weekends). â—?

INGREDIENTS · 1 tablespoon olive oil · 300g beef sausages · 150g button mushrooms, quartered · 1 onion, chopped · 2 cups cooked sweet potato, cut into 2cm cubes · 1 red capsicum, seeded, chopped · 2 garlic clove, crushed · 1 sprig rosemary, finely chopped · 2 cups finely shredded cabbage · 4 fried eggs, to serve · Chopped parsley, to serve · Sriracha chilli sauce, to serve

METHOD Step 1 Heat 2 tsp olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the sausages, turning, for 8 minutes or until browned and almost cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Step 2 Add the remaining 2 tsp oil to the pan. Increase heat to medium-high. Add the onion, sweet potato, capsicum, garlic and rosemary. Season. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until vegies are browned and crisp. Add the root vegetables to the pan. Cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until warmed through. Slice the sausages. Add to pan with shredded vegies. Toss to combine. Cover and cook for 5 minutes or until wilted. Season. Step 3 Top hash with fried eggs. Serve sprinkled with parsley and drizzle with sriracha if you like it spicy.

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellbeing and Beuty

GET AN ACTIVE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sunshine Coast Council has joined forces with the health and wellbeing sector for Heart Week from April 29 to May 5 to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. National Heart Week is an initiative of the National Heart Foundation which aims to promote heart health. Research outlines regular physical activity and healthy eating reduces the risk of a number of chronic diseases that are

the major cause of death and disability in Australia. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said in 2018 the theme for Heart Week is all about the importance of physical activity for heart health. "It has been documented that participating in regular physical activity is important for your health and during Heart Week, council and the health and wellbeing sector encourages the community to get involved in a range of activities," Cr McKay said.

WELLBEING … ❖ HEALTH ❖ WELLNESS ❖ FITNESS ❖ BEAUTY ❖ SPIRITUALITY Call Noosa Today on 5455 6946 to book your advertising space

There is something for everyone including council's free Healthy Sunshine Coast yoga, group fitness or over-55s classes which are all about getting people active and improving their long-term health. People can take positive steps to help reduce stress, have a healthier body, build stronger relationships, and most of all be happy by attending one of the many free Heart Foundation walks happening across the region. There's a Stockland Heart Foundation walk and morning tea at 9am on Sunday, April 29 which includes a walk around the new hospital precinct and the beautiful surrounds of Lake Kawana followed by a free morning tea and health checks by an Exercise Physiologist. Join a free parkrun in five locations at

7am on Saturdays. Walk, skip or jump to raise funds to support Sunshine Coast patients and their families in the Wishlist fun run on April 22. Bring your bike and join in the Travelsmart Sunday Social Ride on April 29 or participate in a morning of games or yarning circle at the Traditional Indigenous Games from 9am to noon on May 1. "These are just some of the activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity to improve heart health," Cr McKay said. To find out how to improve your health and wellbeing, head to council's website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search 'heart week' to download the Heart Week brochure. ●

If your child is keen to take up jogging or running with you, here is some advice from The Athletes Foot.

2

How do I ensure that they don't get hurt? Even if they want to run every day, a child should have one to two days off per week. And the parent or guardian should be alert to possible burnout if the child complains of non-specific muscle or joint problems, fatigue, or poor academic performance.

3

If my child does strain a muscle, how do I ensure they heal properly, but still stay interested in running? Even children can overdo it and develop a stress injury. Rest is the best cure. However, we do not want to discourage exercise so cross training is appropriate. In other words, pick a different activity: brisk walk, cycle, play ball, swim etc.

12381582-CG11-18

1

What are the benefits of running for children? An early introduction to exercise will have a lifelong influence into health and general well being; 30 minutes of running, walking, basketball etc. Three times a week will mean 30 less minutes, three times a week, of screen time and lead to improved overall health development, in addition to life wellness, less obesity, less diabetes, less heart disease and generally improved mental and physical health.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR’S GREATEST LOVE - JEWELS Renowned Australian jeweller Adrian Dickens will discuss Elizabeth Taylor's famous jewels when will he visits the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) Noosa as their guest speaker on Saturday 21 April. Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor has long been associated with jewels, particularly diamonds, but the true extent of her staggering collection is not so well known. Said to be worth more than $200 million, her collection contains many pieces which have become as legendary as the star who wore them, and the man who bought most of them - Richard Burton. The lecture includes the fascinating stories behind such jewels as the great Bulgari Sapphires, La Peregrina Pearl, the Mike Todd tiara, the Taj Mahal pendant and the unforgettable Taylor-Burton Diamond. A breathtaking jewellery collection to rival Cleopatra's. Adrian was born and grew up in the UK. He trained for six years before migrating to Australia in 1988. Since then, Adrian has become a fixture on the Australian jewellery scene. His jewellery roles have included managing Paul Bram in Melbourne and Jan Logan, opening her initial shop in Toorak Rd, South Yarra and moving it to Collins Street, Melbourne where it became her flagship store. More recently he was manager of BUNDA Fine Jewels in Sydney. Adrian created CIRCA AD Jewels in late 2012 with the purpose of providing a genuinely unique personal jewellery in which the jeweller visits his clients or they visit him in his small and private excursions ... fun, learning, new friends. Just turn up - or contact Tara 0402 764 574.

At Noosa Parks Association's Friday Environment Forum on 20 April, former veterinarian and avid bird watcher Jessica Drake will present a fascinating talk about the amazing world of birds. When we compare the anatomy of humans to that of birds we find that there are a lot of similarities, even though our body shape looks so very different to that of our avian friends. Birds and humans have a similar skeletal layout, similar organs and many equivalent anatomical features. Whilst the most obvious difference is wings and the ability to fly there are many other amazing anatomical features that birds possess which give them abilities we could only dream of. The forum starts at 10.30am with coffee on offer at 10am. The morning concludes at 12.15pm. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for information. For those interested in an interpretive birding walk before the forum, you are invited to meet Valda in the Environment Centre car park at 8.30am.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

SURF CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP Volunteer lifesavers give to the community each time they patrol the beautiful and popular yet treacherous Sunshine Beach and now collectively they are asking for some help in return. The beach is patrolled by a dedicated team of volunteers, each weekend and public holiday during the patrol season. The Sunshine Beach Supporters Club is

the major contributor to the costs of more than $450,000 it costs to run its lifesaving program. The surf club is scheduled to undergo an exciting redevelopment beginning in February 2019 and will be closed for business during construction. Throughout this time volunteers will continue to keep the beach safe, with continued patrolling,

however, funding will be limited. In anticipation of the change in available funding to the Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club a series of fundraising initiatives is being undertaken within the community. The first initiative is a Sea Eagle Fundraiser. By visiting the club (or making a phone call) you can purchase a Sea Eagle

for $5, $10, $20, $50 or more. Every Sea Eagle purchased will directly contribute to the funding of lifesaving operations. The Sea Eagles will also be on sale at the Noosa Today Office at Mary Street, Noosaville. To find out more about how you can help our lifesaving club please email future@ sunshinebeachslsc.com.au or call Clay on 0488 303 619. ●

CLOSE GAME IN FIRST MATCH OF PENNANT SEASON BY DOUG MCCONNELL The Sunshine Coast pennant season is under way again with Noosa Croquet Club playing its first match against Nambour last Monday at Nambour. In the golf form of croquet each round consists of 10 matches - 4 singles followed by 4 reverse singles and 2 doubles. Matches are the first measure of

win/loss and if matches are tied then the total of games won decides the outcome. At Nambour, after the first 4 singles the matches were tied at 2 all. Noosa players are shown first. Niven Gugich defeated Theo Kleiberg (7:5) while Galina Makarova narrowly lost to Bill Habner (6:7). In their reverse singles Niven defeated Bill Habner

(7:4) and Galina fell to Theo Kleiberg (2:7). In the three/four singles Colin Hindson beat Roz Pagliarino (6:3) while Peter Richardson won against Eileen Kleiberg (7:6). In their reverse singles Peter lost to Roz Pagliarino (5:7) and Colin lost to Eileen Kleiberg (5:7). Thus matches were tied at 4 all and hoops won were also tied at 55 all. After morning

NOOSA TODAY 43

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

GOING TROPPO AT THE GAMES As I write this we're on countdown to hometime at the International Broadcast Centre, and not a moment too soon for this little buggered black duck. Even though your correspondent's contribution to the marathon effort of bringing the Commonwealth Games into your living room is so inconsequential as to be laughable, the energy expended by everyone on the broadcast team over these two long weeks of 12-hour graveyard shifts makes the laughter somewhat hysterical by this time. In fact as we wind down to Sunday night's closing ceremony, it's all getting a little on the surreal side of hysterical. Right now I've got one eye on the second round at the Margaret River Pro on the desktop in front of me, and the other on a bank of monitors along the far wall where Australia is going for gold in the women's rugby sevens and the Diamonds are neck and neck with England in the netball, while I write this column on my laptop and scribble a list of "magic moments" on a notepad. So far Benjy the boy dancer at the track and field is a neck in front of the Canadian basketballers' group grope when they beat the Kiwis on the buzzer. Please god get me out of here before it's too late. I've seen virtually nothing of these Games other than on TV monitors, but this morning with four hours sleep under my belt I walked the couple of hundred metres from Cockroach Towers to the beach esplanade to watch the frontrunners in the marathon pass by. Unfortunately, I mistimed my run and missed the lead runner, but I was there in time to see defending champion Michael "Turtle" Shelley struggle by with just a few kilometres to go and no hope of catching Scotland's Callum Hawkins. Back at the apartment I wiped a few hundred shellbacks off the remote and turned the TV on just in time to see Hawkins approaching the Southport bridge on the last run to the finish, but he wasn't running, he was staggering. His legs gave out and he collapsed to the tarmac. It was distressing to watch, but the 25-year-old Scot got back to his feet and bravely staggered on. I sat down to watch, transfixed. I tried to run the Honolulu Marathon once, many

between him and the finish line. They got the young Scot to hospital and he was okay, but he might have died on the Southport Bridge, his dehydrated body fast shutting down. It wasn't a magic moment, but it was certainly a moment - one I never want to see again. So back to the magic, and I'm sticking with Benjy the boy dancer, and the incomparable Kurt Fearnley, whose heroic para marathon finish I also watched this morning with tears in my eyes, but they were tears of a very different kind.

years ago, with similar results. Hawkins was on the bridge now, but he was wonky. He crashed into the safety fence and went down, and this time he couldn't get up. Commentator Bruce McAvaney, who's seen it all in his long career, was in danger of losing it himself. "Can you believe this?" he said, "Callum Hawkins, who has demolished this field, is completely and utterly distressed. What we're

MORE MAGIC AT NORTH POINT And speaking of magic, what about that first round of the Margaret River Pro at North Point! Mixed in with some bumpy sideshore up-the-face stuff, there were some heroic rides and deep barrels the other day, not the least of them by our own Julian Wilson. It's early days as I write, of course, but it would be good to see him back in the yellow jersey by the end of the week. And I hope that's not the kiss of death. ●

seeing is hard to watch." The cameras kept trained on Hawkins for long, dreadful moments, while he tried to rally, then slumped again, and lay on the hot road waiting for the medics. Michael Shelley, who had been more than a minute behind, appeared on the bridge, struggling somewhat himself, and passed the fallen Hawkins, throwing him a brief look of anguish, but also staring ahead beyond the mental wall

CAPPER LETS LOOSE AT LUNCH With his signature mullet and flamboyant style Warwick Capper entertained a packed house at Noosa Tigers Presidents lunch on Saturday. Capper talked about his love of football, his many adventures on and off the field and his success at attention grabbing and demonstrated his famous mark making ability with the help of a couple of guests. He spoke about his first meeting with former Carlton and Sydney Swans player David Rhys-Jones at the Oakleigh District Football Club. "I was seven, he was eight," he said.

He recalled how he adopted his trademark look while playing with the Sydney Swans in 1983. "I didn't feel comfortable. I had baggy shorts, bad hair. I thought I'll make a name for myself," he said. "I got my son's size three shorts. I squeezed in. I got my hair touched up. It was beautiful. I was the face of Sydney for 10 years." Capper described football as "a great equalizer" that had given him many wonderful years and had introduced him to many people. ●

ROUND 3 – APRIL 21 NOOSA AFC V MAROOCHYDORE AFC

NOOSA TIGERS TEMPLETON PUTS ON A SHOW FOR FIRST WIN BY JULIAN PITTS 2017 senior club champion Tom Templeton booted nine goals from the midfield in a sublime individual showing as the Noosa tigers completely outclassed Burleigh to the tune of 21 goals last Saturday. In front of a strong home town crowd the Noosa boys answered any critics willing to write them off after a first up loss last week with a commanding performance particularly in the final three quarters. Noosa’s ball movement from defence to goal was a highlight with Lambourn, Wallace, Laskey and the ever improving Harry Maher continually showing poise and skill for the majority of the match. New recruit Jack Gleeson from the Warrnambool area showed the Tiger faithful he will be here for the long haul with an outstanding senior debut for the tigers whilst young Corey Boardman and Tyler Stack again dominated throughout the entire day. Another new recruit Liam Kenny impressed the Tiger followers bagging four goals on debut but more so his attack on the ball and contest was terrific. Delbridge as usual contributed with three goals whilst pint sized 16 year old Will O’Dwyer was a

live wire bagging three goals in a really ‘eye catching’ second senior game for the Tigers. In fact in a win such as this the Noosa boys had no passengers but it was Templeton’s day. The dynamic on ballers explosive dash from the contest and his finishing skills were breathtaking as he showed Burleigh and the large crowd why he is one of the key playmakers in this competition. A massive thank you to Warwick ‘The Wiz’ Capper who entertained a strong 130 person crowd with his self promoted antics. For all those people who make our President’s Luncheons a success, the club thanks you for your contribution. Speaking of Presidents Luncheons, there are no guests this week as we welcome all club sponsors to Rococo Oval where we will take on our arch rivals and last year’s premiers Maroochydore in what will be a fantastic clash. The Tigers dominated the green slime for nearly all of last season only to drop the one that matters most. I’m sure Sammy Faure and his men will be out for some form of redemption this Saturday in front of what will be a huge attendance. All the best to all our junior teams whose season begins this weekend and see you at the local footy. Go tigers! ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

LIFESAVERS’ COMPETING DEMANDS Despite the National Titles, which at present are being held in Perth and drawing lots of lifesavers from their clubs the Noosa Seahorse Nippers on Saturday morning still had enough members to work as helpers; thus ensuring that the little people were as always, properly supervised. A spokesman for the nippers Nikki Mawby said, "We are very grateful for the support we received; word obviously got around and a mixture of parents and other patrol members were on hand to help. At present we have a very good youth membership and they are only too happy to be involved.'' With sand erosion and seas still a problem the nippers were again shifted to the Lions Park. Big Peter Williams a senior helper said, "When you talk to the kids they all like the Park but they want to get back to Main Beach; it's their beach and they love it." On Saturday and Sunday morning the IRB squads were once again in training at Noosa with six crewies being put through their paces; all being well their final assessments will be conducted this weekend. With consistent big surf over the last couple of weeks the role of the IRBs performing courtesy patrols from Noosa to National Park and Sunshine patrolling into Alexandria Bay, the role of the IRB has again come into the forefront. As a result the training of these teams has become never ending.

Kai Thompson wins gold. In the rookie department Noosa last week had 9 Bronze and 9 SRC successfully complete their final assessment. "This is always well received," said Education

Manager Greg McLaughlin. "The new members add to our patrol roster and with our crowds on the increase this is of the utmost importance."

HOOK, LINE & SINKER TUNA SCHOOLS ARE IN TUNE In the Noosa River, whiting have still been in good numbers and have been the perfect target for the kids, with the dog beach, Gympie Terrace and the Frying Pan fishing good spots on the incoming tide. Live worms, yabbies and pealed prawns have been the baits of choice. Bream have also been in good numbers in Woods Bay on prawns, pillies and strips of bonito. Small soft plastics and blades have also been a couple of good lure choices. Lots of trevally have started making their way into the river and as the water temp drops this will only get better. Prawn profile soft plastics have been accounting for good numbers of golden and big eye trevally. Tailor are also being hooked on plastics. Mangrove jack are still on the chew right throughout the system. If you are trolling and casting lure around the various rock bars and jetties located around Noosa you should see these hard fighting red fish. The flathead population seems to be improving every year with more and more larger females being caught and released. The stretch between Tewantin and the first lake, Weyba Creek, and down towards the river mouth seems to be a hot spot. Good numbers of long tail (northern bluefin) and yellow fin tuna are prevalent in both Laguna Bay and Sunshine Reef. Best methods for targeting these hard fighting fish are small, long casting stick baits and slugs. Cast, let sink and then a rapid retrieve has been the best method for hooking up. noosatoday.com.au

Results coming in from the National Titles at Perth indicate that for our two clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa it has definitely been a great start; no surf but great results. For Sunshine Beach in the Youth Category their u/15 Surf Team Jade Hooper, Francesca McKinley, Grace Otto and Abbie Tolano won gold and in the u/15 Iron Woman, Sarah Perkins won silver. Then to finish the day in the u/14 iron woman Abbie Tolano received her second medal when she won the bronze. Michelle Burnett Lifesaving Manager said, "Coach Josh Minogue is over the moon with these results from such a small team." Competing for Noosa in the u/15 beach events Kai Thompson won gold in both the sprint and the beach flags; and in the swims Kareena Lee won gold in the elite female ocean swim and Nick Sloman won the gold in the mens. This has been an outstanding performance from young Kai, for to win both the sprint and the flags is indeed somewhat unique. A great start for both clubs. The long awaited renovations for the Surf Club at Noosa are finally under way and general manager Anton Mogg and staff are smiling. "Things are really moving. I would like to apologies to our customers for any inconvenience it may cause: we will certainly keep our supporters updated," said Mr.Mogg. ●

MANGROVE JACK

Make sure you have a variety of colours and sizes so you can match what they are feeding on. The inshore reefs are again the place to be with large schools of bait congregating on them. Halls, Sunshine Reef and Jew shoals have all been producing with good catches of sweetlip, snapper, coral trout, tuskfish, tuna and mackerel. Trolling diving lures around the reef edges and drop off has seen some great results. Micro jigs have also been accounting for a great mixed bag of reefies as well as pelagics. Those closer inshore reefs are perfect for this style of fishing. Soft plastics have again been getting there fair share of reefies. Don't forget to scent your plastics to get them working a treat. Mackerel sizes are improving with some good catches of both spotted and Spanish mackerel, as the water clears we will see those larger Spanish that this time of the year is famous for. North Reef has also seen a fantastic bag of reefies with pearl perch, snapper, tuskfish, maori cod, sweetlip, just to name a few. On the beaches we are starting to see some good catches of winter bream coming through, dart are still hitting baits as soon as they hit the water. The odd tailor is starting to show up and larger jew have been reported from the southern beaches on the new moon. Most fish have been over the metre mark with fresh mullet being the prime bait. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ● Thursday, 19 April, 2018
