‘Memorial lies’ By Peter Douglas

Director of the Australian War Memorial, and former defence minister Dr Brendan Nelson AO (second from left), has been a big supporter of the project. George Ingram's return. Captain Ingram VC MM, who will also feature on one of the panels, is the Yarra Valley's only Victoria Cross recipient. Other individuals to feature at the memorial will be Trooper George Cassidy, who was sent to the Middle East as reinforcement for the 4th Australian Lighthorse Regiment, who

Rumours circulating the Yarra Ranges about misappropriation of funds for the Seville War Memorial are unfounded and untrue, according to Chair of the Seville War Memorial Committee, Anthony McAleer. Responding to comments within the community that large sums of money have been stolen out of its finances, Mr McAleer said the committee was "an open book" and could "account for every dollar that has come in and gone out". Mr McAleer is also a member of the Mount Evelyn RSL sub-branch, which has been a key driver of the project. Designs for the highly anticipated memorial were unveiled to the community in April 2016, with the project being promoted as 'a war memorial for the 21st century'. The project aims to pay tribute to the town's war history, through detailed words and images in the memorial, which comprises four 4m-high panels. Mr McAleer said he couldn't understand the logic behind such rumours, which he said have circulated for around 12 months. "What I find disgraceful is that somebody out there is purposefully trying to derail this valuable community project by making up vicious lies and then spreading them," he said. "What they have got against the Seville township having their own war memorial, I have no idea. "But to be as nasty as to try to stop it from happening, by making up shameful lies, is contemptible, as far as I'm concerned." Mr McAleer said the committee has been working diligently over the past few years, trying to raise funds to make the project a reality. The total cost is $167,000 with $87,000 raised to date. Apart from one generous donation from a local family, most of the funds have been raised or donated through groups and individuals outside of Seville. "We are at the point where we can show the community the designs and what it will exactly look like," Mr McAleer said. "There is no denying that this will be a memorial that will be unique in Australia - it will be educational, it will be emotive and it will serve as a public work of art in its own right." Upon completion, the memorial will include Seville's Roll of Honour, with a list of

‘Mick’ much-loved In recent days, the family of Edward (Mick) Sherry have mourned the loss of a long-time resident of Cockatoo and Emerald. Mick lived in this area for most of his 92 years. He grew up in Cockatoo and went to Cockatoo Primary School when it was one small room in Ivy Street, and later to Upwey High School where he became House Captain of 'Crow'. He played cricket, tennis and football; and was captain and coach of both Cockatoo and Gembrook football clubs. He was to become the Rover of the Century for Gembrook (1906-2006). He had various jobs before running a sawmill in Fielder. However, many families, particularly in Gembrook, would remember him as the manager of Russell's Hay and Grain Store in the Main Street. He worked there for many years before joining the Shire of Sherbrooke staff until he retired in 1990. He lived with his wife, Margaret, in Emerald; in between travelling the length and breadth of Australia numerous times. They were often seen on their daily walks around the township. He loved the hills of home, and even when they travelled, always believed the best part was coming home. He passed away peacefully on 11 April and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, Mick.

Flash safety By Peter Douglas The installation of flashing electronic speed signs at Kallista Primary School has received bipartisan support. Monbulk candidate John Schurink this week confirmed the state Liberal Party would join Labor, if elected, in providing funds for the project, which aims to improve road safety for the school. The announcement means that irrespective of who wins this year's state election, the school will receive the signs. Mr Schurink said while it's one thing to have speed zones, restrictions need to be made clear for drivers. "Although Kallista Primary is a small school, with enrolments of about 168 students, parents have become increasingly concerned about the high number of speed of vehicles passing within metres of the school," he said. "Ensuring drivers know the 40km/h speed limit, although no guarantees, will give drivers and other children a better chance of seeing and avoiding each other, thereby reducing the risk to our children." Mr Schurink said the installation of flashing school zone signs around schools has been roundly acclaimed by road safety experts and school communities as being very effective. The candidate's comments come as incumbent Monbulk MP, James Merlino, confirmed the Victorian Government would take action, investing $80,000 to install four flashing electronic speed signs. Earlier this month, a parent concerned for the lives of his children and other students at the school told the 'Mail' the installations were a must. Jason Fox said, due to the location of the school, drivers weren't being made fully aware of the school zone restriction. "People don't realise there's a school there," Mr Fox said. "The school is close to Grant's (Picnic Ground) so you get tourists that don't know the roads and don't know that the school zone is there ... if the light is there, it'll help them see it."

Kicking off Pride By Wendy Williamson Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve will erupt in an explosion of colour during this year's Pride Cup on Saturday 28 April. The goal posts will be wrapped in rainbow colours and the 50m arc will be painted in the same bright colours. The players will sport the colours of the rainbow, too. The Pride Cup's message of support for diversity and inclusion in sport for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) communities has spread exponentially in a few short years. There are now nine Pride Cups across Victoria, but Yarra Glen is where it all began, and a newly painted mural celebrates this. Yarra Glen Football Netball Club treasurer, David Ball, met the 'Mail' in downtown Yarra Glen on Friday 20 April to show off the eyecatching mural on the wall of the post office. "Australia Post has been very supportive," Mr Ball said. Painted by Healesville artist and graphic designer Paul Sonsie, the mural consists of wings in rainbow colours with a football soaring high above. "The rainbow wings are spreading the message of inclusiveness," Mr Ball said. Paul is no footballer, but he said he was delighted to be able to make his contribution to the Pride Cup as an artist. "Having this mural in the centre of town is a great opportunity for the community to connect with the Pride Cup's message of inclusiveness," he said. The football and netball will run all day from 10am on April 28, with Yarra Glen hosting Alexandra. At this celebration of inclusiveness and diversity there will also be face painting for kids, broadcasts from JOY 949 and Yarra Valley FM,

Couple killed in hit-andrun crash The Basin community is in mourning after a recently married couple from the region died after a hit-and-run crash during the early hours of Thursday 19 April. The couple from the Basin, Matt Goland, 38, and Bita Zaeim, 32, had only been married for 12 months. A Boronia man, 19, and a Belgrave teenage girl, 15, allegedly stole a Lexus four-wheeldrive from a Lysterfield house. They are alleged to have driven at high speeds, before running a red light and crashing into the couple's Holden Commodore in Wantirna South. The crash occurred at the intersection of Stud and Boronia roads, shortly after 1am The pair had been chased from the scene of the crash by nearby security guards, but they were later arrested at a Belgrave home on Saturday 21 April about 1.15pm. News of the crash has led to an outpouring of grief from family, friends and the nearby communities, with many paying their respects through visiting the crash site.

IN BRIEF Monbulk Alpine Mowers Detectives at Yarra Ranges CIU have charged three people so far regarding burglaries and ram raids at Alpine Mowers, though are still seeking information to find other offenders. Detectives report that so far a 27-year-old male and 25-year-old female from Cranbourne North have been charged with handling stolen goods in relation to a ram raid that occurred at Alpine Mowers in Monbulk on 20 March. Both the male and female have been bailed and will appear at Dandenong Magistrates Court on 6 June. This ram-raid is believed to have been the first incident at the Alpine Mowers and it has since been the target of a number of break-ins, pushing the owner Adam Robinn to employ a security guard to protect his business. Though, on 12 April, it was broken into again. Detectives at Yarra Ranges ICU told the Mail that as a result of a search warrant, which was

Now celebrating its 15th year, the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios is an annual weekend program that invites visitors to meet, greet, and learn from artists working in their private studios. With each studio space offering unique stories, histories and contexts, the weekend is an opportunity to get an exclusive 'sneak peak' into the vibrant creative spaces of the region. The 27 participating studios will open their doors for visitation on May 5 and 6. Let your curiosity guide you as you immerse yourself in the beauty of the Dandenong Ranges, the perfect inspiration for an incredible weekend. It would be interesting to see if there are any statistics to back up the supposition that dental decay rates in our local area must be way in excess of the Melbourne norm. That would surely be the only justification for the addition of fluoride to the water supply. My 22-year-old son has been raised here, gone to both primary and secondary school in the area, participated heavily in local basketball and football, and we have both been involved in many and varied social/community activities. We cannot think of one instance when we though 'wow, that person's teeth are really bad, shame we don't have fluoride in the water?'. He is yet to need a filling. Maybe the rest of Melbourne would be better off 'falling in line' with our community. Liz Arnold, Emerald

Red Baron witness By Peter Douglas While many incredible war-time stories surround the Yarra Ranges region, few tales may be more interesting than that of Private Dick Bowman of Monbulk (dec. 1899-1994). On 21 April, 1918 - one century ago - Pvt Bowman laid a strong claim to witnessing one of the most historic events of World War I, the shooting down of the Red Baron. On that particular day, it has been welldocumented the ace of aces, Manfred von Richthofen, had been pursuing an enemy plane near the Somme River, when Canadian Captain Roy Brown spotted the Red Baron and pursued. The German fighter ace, renowned for his bright red tri-planes, had fled and was flying low to the ground when a bullet pierced through his heart and lungs. Von Richthofen landed roughly, right near where an Australian Imperial Force unit was located, but died soon after. Apart from Captain Brown, many Australian soldiers present on that day claimed to have shot down the Red Baron, though no single person is credited with this historic moment. Many theories have been put forward, among those including Australian Sgt Cedric Popkin, who many sources claim is the person most likely to have killed the Red Baron. But, despite such debate, Pvt Bowman’s eyewitness account is made more legitimate because he never claimed to have caused the fatal wound. Before Mr Bowman’s death in 1994, local historian Anthony McAleer, from Mount Evelyn RSL, was fortunate enough to speak with him. In 1993, when Mr Bowman was aged 94, he relayed a vivid recollection to Mr McAleer: ‘One day I was on this machine gun, they used to put them on a post and they had a sight fixed on it, and this particular day it was a

dirty, wet day. Well, I don’t know how it flashed about but the next thing we were told the Red Baron was coming,’ he said. ‘The plane was flying low and I saw him, he looked wounded. I fired but it was hard to make out what a distance he was and I’d say a tenth of my bullets were wasted going up. I did see him crash. The funny thing is that there weren’t that many machine-gunners there but, since, I’ve heard so many that claimed to have been there.’ That same year, Mr Bowman travelled back to France as a guest of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He visited the site where the Red Baron was shot down, but said it looked completely different and couldn’t recognise the area at all. Meanwhile, Mr McAleer said this wasn’t the only local connection to the Red Baron. He said the altimeter from the Red Baron’s plane had been sitting on the mantelpiece, for many years, of the Silvan home of Major Hastings A’Beckett. Major A’Beckett had brought the piece home after the war, although no-one knows where it is today. After the Red Baron’s heavy landing, it’s well-documented that many items from the plane were taken by soldiers as trophies.

Students at the ready It's almost NAPLAN time and as the community debate re-commences, students and teachers at Mater Christi College are at the ready. Students nationwide in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete four tests covering reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy between 15 - 17 May. "It is important to understand the limitations of NAPLAN. It is only a snapshot assessment, but students can gain positive feedback on their progress in basic skills and they experience the rigour of taking a test and seeking to perform at their best," said Marlo VanderZalm,

Head of Middle School. NAPLAN aims to measure educational outcomes and create data for parents, schools and government policy makers but there are many other important attributes that standardised tests cannot assess, suggests Ms VanderZalm. "NAPLAN can't measure a student's engagement with or deep understanding of an issue, the ability to collaborate, communicate constructively and generate solutions let alone real-world attributes of leadership, respect and kindness." Mater Christi College teachers recognise

the shortcomings of the data, but always analyse the reports to learn from the activity. "We believe in continuous improvement and the NAPLAN data can be useful for our planning and practice. The results can provide insights about individual students and build our understanding of their needs," said Ms VanderZalm. While the mere mention of NAPLAN can create concern for some students, parents can reassure their children through calm conversation and simple advice including: A bit of nervousness is normal. These are not pass or fail tests. There are no repercussions of not doing so well. Be positive. Challenge yourself to do your best.

OPEN DAYS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

Put tests into perspective In May this year, over one million students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will participate in an assessment of their literacy and numeracy skills. According to the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) As with any test in life - whether academic, sport or hobby-related - some students may feel anxious about NAPLAN. In these cases, it is up to the adults in students' lives to help explain what NAPLAN is all about and keep it in perspective. For students, NAPLAN is a short assessment they take only four times during their

school life, which checks what they normally learn in the classroom every day. For parents, NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment for seeing how their child, compared with the rest of Australia's children, is progressing the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy. The information NAPLAN provides supports conversations between parents, teachers and schools working together to help children achieve their full potential. NAPLAN data are also used to support school improvement processes by enabling

teachers to monitor their students' progress over time against a national measure, and to identify areas of strength and development. NAPLAN data, when used in combination with other school-based assessments, provide teachers with diagnostic information for planning their teaching programs, and guiding and supporting their students' learning journey. Literacy and numeracy are fundamentally important for all young people, but NAPLAN is not, and should never be, the sole measure of

a child's achievement at school or the success of a school. School curriculum has so much to offer. All students should have an opportunity to study a rich curriculum for literature, science, humanities and social sciences, technology, health and physical education, languages and the arts. So, if you child is sitting NAPLAN this year, simply encourage them to do the best they can and treat the test day as any other school day. NAPLAN starts on Tuesday 15 May.

Students shouldn''t feel too anxious. 180112

KNOW YOUR LOCAL TRADESPERSON

Automotive specialists Omega Automotive Services Centre has been operating in Upwey for 14 years, following over 17 years at Wandin North. Business owner David Clark has 30 years' experience in the automotive industry. Not only is he a qualified motor mechanic, but also a highly qualified automatic transmission specialist. David is a member of the VACC Automotive Transmission Specialist committee, so he receives up-to-date information. Due to the industry changing rapidly, David and his staff attend frequent seminars to keep their training at the absolute peak. They also have the latest workshop equipment to communicate with all modern vehicles. "Most people think having your vehicle serviced includes an automatic transmission service," David said. "Unfortunately, this is not the case. "Just like you service your engine every six months or 10,000 kilometres, your automatic transmission should be serviced every 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first." A transmission service involves replenishing the oil and filter, just like your engine. "As the sump is removed, this generally enables us to recognise a problem before it becomes serious or costly," David said. "You will prolong the life of your transmission, improve vehicle reliability and save money in the future. "Need a little more motivation? Ask us how much it would cost for a complete transmission rebuild - you might be shocked." Omega not only provides service for the local community, it also supplies reconditioned automatic and manual transmissions to the trade. Omega Automotive Services Centre is at 76 Main Street, Upwey. Call David and Lisa Clark on 9754 7533.

Omega's David Clark has over 80 years' experience in the automotive industry.

Calling all ‘Ruff Mudders’ By Derek Schlennstedt Animal Aid is welcoming dog lovers and their canine pals to take part in 'Adventure Dog, a Cross Country Challenge', which will help raise funds to care for the animals at Animal Aid. On Sunday 27 May, at the picturesque Wandin Park Equestrian Centre, participants will be mentally and physically challenged by 25 obstacles spread over almost 4km. A dog's dream come true, the event is perfect for those particular pups which love getting out and about, leaping and bounding, and wading through water and muddy meadows. Mark Menze, Animal Aid chief executive officer, said the event would be reminiscent of the popular Tough Mudder, "but ruffer". "Picture Tough Mudder with your dog," Mr Menze said.. "You will venture over the hills, under the logs, through the mud, you will enter the bush and into the water." Friends and family are welcome to come along on the day to give their support. There will be plenty of activities to keep them busy once they've you hit the course. You can also involve your family and enter a team, which is a maximum of four people and a minimum of one dog per team. After completing the challenge, you and your four-legged friend can refuel the tank, with plenty of food and drink on offer in the event village. Participants must register via our Go Fundraise page before 13 May. Human entrants must be aged 16 or over (consent form signed by legal guardian for those under 18). Dog entrants must be aged one year or over

Lorraine O''Connell with ''Nemo'' and Mud on Her face. 179928 on event day. All the money raised goes to Animal Aid, with individuals who raise enough money and reach their goal receiving a prize. "Those who accept the challenge and reach their fundraising goal, will join the ranks of our fundraising heroes and will receive a specially commissioned Adventure Dog - A Cross Country Challenge tee!" Mr Menze said. To register and find out more, visit: www. adventuredogacrosscountrychallenge.gofundraise.com.au/

Surprise results first-up By Cameron Hutchison Round 1 of AFL Yarra Ranges action kicked off in if the fog, but all were blessed with bright sunshine come senior kick-off. Division 1 saw Belgrave unfurl their Division 2 Flag; the Professionals Cup was hosted by Mt Evelyn while Yarra Junction played Powelltown in their local rivalry clash. Some surprise results and some good football and netball was witnessed by club's supporters and the community. The winners in senior football: UpweyTecoma, Emerald, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Yea, Seville, Kinglake and Yarra Junction. A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville and Emerald had a draw, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Seville, Kinglake, Yarra Junction and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 20.15.135 d Belgrave 7.12.54 Belgrave unfurled their 2017 Division 2 Flag but unfortunately for them that was where the joy ended. Upwey-Tecoma put on a stellar performance to welcome them back into Division 1. The first quarter was an even affair with only seven points the margin in Upwey's favour. Upwey put on a bit of a clinic in the second, holding Belgrave scoreless while they piled on 6.6 to make the margin a formidable 48 points at halftime. Belgrave rallied somewhat in the third, but Upwey still managed to increase their lead at the final margin to 57 points. The final quarter was all Upwey, kicking 6 goals to 2. Upwey Tecoma Best: D. Devers, D. Waters (9 goals), D. Bell (3 goals), S. Waters, J. Tailby, L. Beacom Belgrave Best: J. Toole, T. Fleming, P. Gough, J. Brown, N. Somervaille, M. Johnson (1 goal). Emerald 19.8.122 d Healesville 14.10.94 Emerald travelled to Healesville and gave Healesville a bit of a surprise touch-up. Healesville got a slight lead in the first and were six points in front. Emerald turned that around in the second and were never headed from there. They piled on seven straight to Healesville's 2.3 and went into the long break with a 21-point lead. Healesville fought back in the third, kicking 7 goals to 6 which was an entertaining quarter for spectators but they could not bridge the gap going into the last giving Emerald an 11-point lead. The last quarter was tight but Emerald outscored Healesville by 2.5 to 2 goals and came away with a good firstround win. Emerald Best: Michael Dompietro, Mathew Dompietro, M. Stephens (1 goal), J. Castricum, J. Pedder (3 goals), S. Semmens (2 goals) Healesville Best: M. Jeffery (2 goals), J. Nugent, J. Savage (3 goals), D. Plozza, N. Aldridge, R. Woodford (3 goals) Olinda Ferny Creek 12.18.90 d Monbulk 5.8.38 Monbulk played host to the 2017 Premiers and had something to prove from last year. The game was a close contest in the first and was low scoring but Olinda held a two-point lead at quarter time. It was a goal-for-goal tussle in the second but Olinda peppered the goals with nine scoring shots to four and increased their lead to 12 points at half-time. Olinda again were wasteful in front of goals in the third, which plagued them a bit last year, but they were solid in defence not allowing Monbulk to kick any majors. Their lead had increased to 30 points at the final change and they looked home and hosed. The final margin could have been a lot more but another wasteful quarter still saw them kick 3.5 but Monbulk could only kick one behind. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: D. Wilson (1 goal), M. Hottes (2 goals), R. Cottam-Starkey (1 goal), D. Troutman, S. Atkinson, J. Rankin. Monbulk Best: N. Sargent (1 goal), A. Beck (2 goals), C. Tibb, K. Fletcher, S. Williams, M. Dekker Woori Yallock 21.26.152 d Warburton Millgrove 8.3.51 Last year's runners up in Woori Yallock played host to Warburton and would have been wanting to atone for last years grand final performance. They came out full of run and completely dominated a shell-shocked Warburton. The game started slowly and Warburton even though they could not manage a score in the mailcommunity.com.au

Upwey's Daniel Waters marks strongly on the lead. 180115 first were still in it due to Woori Yallock wasted opportunities in front of goal by kicking 2.8. Woori Yallock straightened up in the second, kicking 4.4 while Warburton kicked 2.1. The lead was 35 points at half-time. Woori Yallock really put the foot down in the third, kicking 7.10 to 1 straight to hold an insurmountable lead of 81 points at three-quarter time. They certainly did not take the foot off the pedal in the last, with eight goals to five to come away with a 101-point win. Woori Yallock Best: J. Matthews (1 goal), Z. Monkhorst (1 goal), S. Kennedy (2 goals), J. Williams (3 goals), K. Busoli (3 goals) Warburton-Millgrove Best: M. Wappett, L. Barnard (2 goals), L. Spaulding, M. Read, B. Clinch, T. McKail Wandin 19.13.127 d Mt Evelyn 14.14.98 Mt Evelyn and Wandin battled it out for 'The Professionals Cup' and it was Wandin who got off to a solid start kicking 5.2 to 2.6 in the first. The second quarter was tight and Mount Evelyn outscored Wandin, kicking five goals straight to Wandin's 4.3, but the lead was a handy 11 points at half-time. Wandin bounced back in the third and kicked six goals to four to extend their lead to 24 points at the final break. It was an even final quarter and no one really had full control. Mt Evelyn peppered the goals, but their inaccuracy probably did not help at the end of the day. Wandin Best: R. Ross (4 goals), R. Heasley (1 goal), J. Ladner (2 goals), P. Hodgett (3 goals), H. Byrne (2 goals), J. Van Unen (4 goals) Mt Evelyn Best: T. Hallett-Tauali'I (1 goal), A. Gibbons, M. Martin, J. Beamish, C. Urquhart, K. Jones (4 goals) Division 2 Seniors Football Yea 14.15.99 d Alexandra 9.7.61 Alexandra played host to Yea in the 'Over the Ranges' clash but could not manage to curtail the run of Yea. Yea got the jump in the first but it was an entertaining first quarter with seven goals being kicked with Yea leading by three points. They kicked away in the second with another two goals to Alexandra's one behind and extended their lead to 21 points at half-time. Alexandra could not penetrate Yea's defence in the third and could only add to their score with one behind while Yea kicked 4.6 to take a comfortable lead of 50 points going into the last. Alexandra outscored Yea kicking 6.1 to 4.1 but their run was left far too late. Yea Best: S. Bamblett (2 goals), R. Aldous (2 goals), C. Graham (3 goals), D. O'Dwyer (1 goal), M. Pitman, A. McSpeerin

Alexandra Best: J. Brereton (2 goals), B. Norris, N. Waugh, M. Steiner (1 goal), L. Ragg (1 goal), B. Cooper Seville 23.15.153 d Gembrook Cockatoo 12.13.85 Seville travelled to Gembrook to take on a new look Gembrook side and were in control all day. The first quarter was a closely fought contest with only five points separating the two. Seville kicked 5.7 to 3.3 in the second to hold a 21-point lead at half-time. Another consistent third quarter by Seville with eight goals straight to Gembrook's 4.3 had their lead out to 42 points at the last change. The game was always in Seville's grasp and they finished it off kicking 7.4 to 3.2 to come out winners by 68 points in the end. Seville Best: M. Cecere (3 goals), J. Nolan, J. Cecere (4 goals), J. Neal (6 goals), N. O'Keefe'(4 goals), D. Broadway (3 goals) Gembrook Cockatoo Best: M. Firrito (5 goals), D. Volta (1 goal), M. Templeton (1 goal), P. Backman (1 goal), D. Williams, L. Taylor. Kinglake 19.22.136 d Thornton-Eildon 5.1.31 Kinglake travelled to Thornton and flexed their early season muscles. They got away to a flyer kicking 6.4 to 1 behind and took a very nice lead of 39 points into the second quarter. Thornton bounced back in the second, kicking four straight to 2.6 and outscored Kinglake in the second. Kinglake rectified that in the third, not allowing Thornton to worry the scorers but kicked seven goals themselves to increase their lead to 81 points at the final change. It was a hard day at the office for Thornton going down by 135 points at the final siren. Kinglake Best: M. McAllister, A. Burns (5 goals), J. Butterworth Thornton-Eildon Best: J. Scotland, W. Cody (1 goal), T. Phelps Yarra Junction 19.17.131 d Powelltown 10.8.68 Yarra Junction took on Powelltown in their 'Rivalry Game' today and came away with the title and the points. It was an interesting first quarter with Yarra Junction full of running kicking a very respectable 6.3 to 2.5 to take a lead of 22 points into the second. Powelltown came back at them in the second with four goals to Yarra Junction's wasteful 2.7 but they were still behind by 17 points at half-time. A huge 10goal quarter by the Eagles to Powelltown's two changed the flavour of the game as Junction had a lead of 64 points at three-quarter time. It was low scoring in the last as both sides were spent but Yarra junction comfortably came away with four points to start their season.

Monbulk juniors shine

Monbulk Rangers Outlaws striker Marc Mirafuentes shapes up for a goal to seal his side's 4-0 win over Mount Waverley in the FFV U14s competition at the Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility. 180108

New season kicks off Monbulk Rangers teams kicked off the season proper with a raft of victories in both the FFV and Churches league on the weekend. The Women's Firsts fought a tough contest against Sandringham with a goalless first half before Gabby Simpson kicked two and Mikayla Newman one in the second half to finish 3-0. The Reserves held Sandringham to a

3-3 draw. At home, MRSC Mens notched up another 3 points on the ladder after goals to Steve McCrae and Arash Sadeghi sealed the game 2-0 against South Yarra. Around 350 Monbulk Rangers juniors played in the Victorian Churches Football Association league on Saturday.

Monbulk Junior Football Club travelled to Olinda, Seville and Yarra Glen for this week's away games to face some strong opponents. In perfect conditions, all players were in great spirits as they ran out onto the field to play their best footy. Under 9s A great day out for the team. Plenty of long kicks and strong marks. The new players are starting to get included and are contributing well. They were very courageous against a tough team. T.Tatton, Z. Koelewyn, E. White, B.McConchie, J Thorp Under 10s A great result today for this group of kids; they withheld Olinda early with some solid defence, then were able to add six goals in three quarters to run away with a fantastic win. A great reward and everyone contributed on the day. C. Palmer, J.Frazer, W.Davidson-Tuck, F.Clunie, W.Hugson Under 11s The boys showed great improvement from last week. Better contesting for the ball and more effective positional play. They also scored their first goal. Well done, Boys. M. Pitthouse, E.Griersmith-Rowe, R.Kay, T.Watson, F.Surridge Monbulk 1.0.6 v Woori Yallock 8.7.55 Under 12s A tough day at the office for the boys. They had to borrow some Under 11 players because they were short on numbers. They outscored the opposition in the last quarter; but having given them a five-goal start, it was always going to be a battle. T. Gethin-Davies, F.Taffe, B.Macdonald, A.Teese, N.Wain Monbulk 1.3.9 v Olinda 11.3.69 Under 14s Blue A beautiful day at Yarra Glenn allowed the

Under 10s footballer Ethan puts one through the big sticks. 180098 team to showcase their skills. As the game developed, a far greater use of the ground was seen. M. Bateson, R.Finlay, Charlie J. Turner Monbulk 8.8.96 v Healesville 1.6.12 Under 14s Green The boys were outsized but at no point were they intimidated. They lost the game but earnt the respect of the opposition. T. Rickard, J. Wrigley, C.Hussey, A.Nagey Monbulk 6.1.37 v Yarra Glenn 19.8.122 Under 14s Girls The Hawkettes looked pretty damn good today in their new footy jumpers. And it was such an awesome day for footy, Today, as a team, they displayed a strong pressured game to be proud of. Each player's effort in their zone, tackles, and pressure to defend and transfer of the ball, was much more consistent. Great result, girls. Let's keep building for the 'team'! R.Ross, M. Laven, A. Hughson, M. Hooper Monbulk 9.2.56 v Olinda 1.1.7 Under 16s The boys did a great job against good opposition. Second quarter they gave away too many free kicks, but turned it around in the second half for a solid win. Well done. L. Beecroft, J.S pencer, A. The new HiLux models are packed with features.

HiLux: rugged new look "Designed and developed over a three-year vehicle program, all the new components on these stunning HiLux models are fully integrated and engineered into the core vehicle and covered by the standard factory warranty. "The Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged are not accessorised special editions, they are fully fledged new HiLux models that our customers demanded and we can be justifiably proud that they were designed and developed here in Australia," he said. With its off-road focus, the Rugged X builds on the SR5 on which it is based with a host of protective, functional and recovery features. At the front, the wince-compatible, heavyduty steel front bat, with integrated bash plate, LED lightbar and driving lights provides effective off-road protection and, together with the new design grille, gives the Rugged X a striking and tough aesthetic. Further protective and recovery features include a snorkel, purposeful side rock rails that are able to support a fully laden vehicle, front and rear recovery points and a new heavy-duty steel rear bar and integrated tow bar. The rear tub of the Rugged X has also been designed for functionality with a new steel

sports bar that can support a vertical load of 75kg and, with multiple tiedown points, secure up to 200kg on the floor of the tub. Inside, the new Rugged X delivers all the comfort and style of a premium double cab ute, including leather-accented seats. A new design instrument cluster, metallic black ornamentation and black headlining complete the interior design theme. The new HiLux Rogue has been designed with a more urban adventurer customer in mind and features redesigned from and rear ends that reflect Toyota's global truck design DNA. Designed in Australia, and developed in conjunction with the Toyota engineering team in Thailand, the HiLux Rogue is a stylish premium HiLux model that will be sold in markets around the world. The new, more vertical front-end and outboard driving lights give the vehicle a strong, assertive appearance that is complemented by clean lines and a near rear bumper - all with a contemporary black and grey colour palette. The tub also gains the same practical and stylish sports bar as all the new HiLux models,

along with a bespoke tonneau cover for added protection and security. As a premium model, the Rogue also gains the same interior features and trim as the Rugged X. The new Rugged model is based on the HiLux SR and is aimed at customers who want the extra functionality and features of the Rugged X but with the protection offered by a traditional steel bulbar. Like the Rugged X, the Rugged also features a snorkel, redesigned grille, side rock rails, sports bar and heavy-duty steel rear bar, together recovery points. All three new HiLux models share the same mechanical specifications as the SR5 or SR models on which they are based and are powered by a proven, strong and efficient 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. Driving through a part-time, shift-on-thefly 4x4 system with a full set of low-range ratios, the engine generates maximum power of 130kW and 450Nm of torque with optional sixspeed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.

1187559-RC24-15

Toyota has given its HiLux a serious dose of style, refinement and rugged off-road prowess with the launch of the new 4x4 double cab Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged models. The three new hero models of Australia's best-selling vehicle have been designed and developed in Australia with support from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and Toyota in Thailand. Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, said the three new halo models have been designed to meet the demands of Australian customers and conditions and build on the 'Unbreakable' reputation of HiLux. "These three new HiLux heroes give customers a bold new choice in the market, whether they are looking for a stylish and refined top-end ute for and play, or enhanced protection, functionality and recovery capacity for serious off-roading," Mr Hanley said. "We know that the average HiLux customer already spends over $2000 on accessories for their vehicles, so we looked at what those needs were from both a capability and style perspective, and developed a raft of new features for HiLux.

Lilydale driver Kasey Garlick won the A Grade Junior Sedans.

Juniors scorch track By Peter Douglas Alexandra Speedway Club's Junior Sedan feature night has been run and won, with three important Junior Sedan races decided over the weekend of 21-22 May. Victory went the way of two of Alexandra's own member drivers and another to a visiting Goulburn Valley member, on a night where records were scorched in all categories. Lilydale's Kasey Garlick, Kilmore's Rhys Meakins and Numurkah's Tristan McGraw all took race wins in the Junior feature events whilst Gary Evans won the Standard Saloons, Liam Powell the Goulburn Oven's Sedans and Steve Kershaw from Healesville won the Sports Sedans. The nationally aligned Junior Sedan Promotional Association were holding the latest round in their state point score with A Grade and B Grade features for their members and both features were won by local Alexandra competitors. The A Grade Junior Sedans had attracted cars from Warrnambool, Geelong, Bendigo, Penola South Australia to compete against the Alexandra regulars and four heat races were held to decide feature race qualifying positions. Ricky Cornwall was first to win with Garlick picking up the second qualifier and the third whilst Cornwall won the final qualifier putting both the local members off the front row of the feature race field with Mitch Glynn, Brad Gartner, Jack Ramsdale and Todd Moule on the next two rows. Fifteen laps awaited the starters for the final, Garlick assumed early control of the race. Jack Ramsdale was fast in fifth before spinning himself in turn four and keeping the car moving and having to charge back through the field. Cornwall had a fight on his hands with Glynn and Garner with Glynn the first to succeed in passing and setting about a chase on Garlick. Garlick and Glynn in the later stages of the race were brought much closer together as they weaved through traffic, whilst Gartner passed Cornwall to take over the third spot. At the line Garlick took the race win by just 0.143 of a second and a new 15-lap track record, Glynn, Gartner, Cornwall and Ramsdale mailcommunity.com.au

Kilmore driver Rhys Meakins won the B Grade Junior Sedans. completed the top five with Ramsdale carving up the track setting a new one lap record on his way to fifth spot after his earlier spin, his time 22.672 a new record by just 0.002 of a second. In B Grade, Juniors Bella Rizzoli from the Ballarat club started the night with a win before Rhys Meakins won the next two qualifiers and Rizzoli again picking up a win in the fourth making it two wins apiece. Meakins and Rizzoli began the feature race ahead of Bradin Claridge, Chloe Sheerman, Linken Paterson and Holly Harris for a 12-lap final. Meakins quickly assumed a clear advantage with Rizzoli having to dig in and try and claw her way back towards the leader. Harris made moves forward passing Claridge with Luke Cornfoot and Jarred Brown also scrapping for position. A couple of caution periods during the race bunched things up and also unfortunately the final caution caught out Cornfoot and Brown for indiscretions at the single file starting bollard which would see them after the race put to

the rear of the results. At the chequered flag Meakins took the win from Rizzoli, Harris, Claridge and Breanna Simpson. The state governing body Victorian Speedway Council also had a feature event decided for their Juniors with a healthy twelve cars starting the nights racing. Some great quality competition that included recently registered Lachlan Fitzpatrick and Tristan McGraw seen the two Goulburn Valley drivers really take it too the local kids. Fitzpatrick won the first qualifier, Toby Carmichael won the second, McGraw the third and then Fitzpatrick won the fourth and final qualifier to decide the starting line up of Fitzpatrick, McGraw, Carmichael, Jack Brudenell, Connor Donegan and Janie Patton for the final. Fitzpatrick who had earlier had two wins and a second placed qualifying finish looked the most likely to go on to win the feature race; however, as we have seen many times before, somebody so dominant can be brought undone and mechanical issues did just that to

Fitzpatrick when it looked like a win was assured. After Fitzpatrick pulled infield and out of the race McGraw controlled the pace from there and stretched his lead out to over six seconds as he greeted the chequered flag ahead of Mansfield youngster Brudenell, Courtney Meakins, Connor Donegan and Troy Higgins. In support racing, Gary Evans won the Standard Saloon final ahead of Warrick Howie, Aaron Meakins, Trevor Evans and Greg Parks and along the way the winner set one lap and eight lap track records through the night. Liam Powell won the Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association final from his brother James with Peter Little third from Jamie Atkin and Justin Granger and in Sports Sedans Healesville racer Steve Kershaw took victory ahead of Jack Van Bremen, Lee Beech, Steve Akil and Daniel Eastham. The next meeting to be held will be on 12 May with Crash and Bash the feature event of the evening as all classes compete through the dog leg circuit. Tuesday, 24 April, 2018
