How the world has changed over the past century. Ron Lane’s story of the amazing courage of Mr Johns is inspiring and makes you wonder whether people today still display the type of honour and selflessness as Edgar Thomas Johns did throughout his life. Our lifesavers are not fighting wars but certainly their heroic actions saving others in dangerous seas are fine examples of the same sort of selfless acts. That trait must surely run in the Johns family. For years Pat and Ben Johns provided a refuge for people at Johns Landing who had no where else to go. What we certainly wouldn’t see today is someone handing a rifle over to a lifeguard at Noosa Main Beach to dispatch the threat of a shark to human life. In so many ways it shows how some attitudes have altered. - Margie Maccoll

NEW HALL JOY When the Noosa District Pipe Band played Waltzing Matilda as it marched through the brand spanking new Cooroy Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon you could feel the pride of the towns people swell. It was fitting the hall that the community rebuilt be officially opened with a spectacular showcase of local talent and just days before Anzac Day when the community will again gather to honour the defence forces. In 1926 the Memorial Hall was built, like many across the country, to honour fallen soldiers of WWI with the names of those who did not return forever etched on an honour board proudly displayed on the wall. Read all about it on pages 6-7.

THE FEED The Noosa Food and Wine Festival is introducing an all new Festival Village in 2018 for Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May in the Noosa Lions Park, with the beautiful Noosa waterways as a backdrop.

FATAL ACCIDENT IN NOOSAVILLE A male pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Noosaville on Monday afternoon, 23 April. Preliminary investigations indicate at around 5:30pm the man was struck whilst crossing the road at Hilton Terrace. The man, who is believed to have been visiting Queensland from Victoria,

was declared deceased en route to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined as an investigation of this nature takes some time. The driver of the involved vehicle immediately stopped and rendered assistance to the (at that time) injured

male as did other passers-by. The driver of the involved vehicle was very shaken by the events and has provided every assistance to police. Police remind both drivers and pedestrians to take care when crossing our roads or approaching pedestrian crossings. Never take it for granted that a driver has seen you enter or be upon

a pedestrian crossing. ●

TEWANTIN SERVICE REFLECTS ON TRAGEDY OF WAR BY MARGARET MACCOLL

It was an apt poem by Rupert McCall read by Rev'd Leonie Gaffel that summed up the mood and feeling of the Anzac Day dawn service at Tewantin yesterday. Hundreds gathered at the memorial for the service that this year marks 100 years since the end of WWI on 11 November 1918. Tewantin-Noosa RSL sub-branch president Mick Reid told the gathering the coming together was not to celebrate but to reflect on the tragedy

of war and pay tribute to the courage of our service men and women and the legacy they have left. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton gave the address at this year's morning service. "A combination of full heart and great sorrow washes over me every time I hear the Last Post," she said. "A heart full of love, gratitude and pride for the men and women across time that have been prepared to give

of themselves, and their lives, to protect us. Sorrow that the haunting tunes signify endings - the end of a day's activities, or that a soldier has gone to his or hers final resting place. To overcome the sorrow, I look at the beginnings fostered from endings. The start of a new day, and the continued hope that our peacekeeping efforts will build a future free of conflict, of war, of losing our loved ones." ●

COVER STORY

CONDUCT OF THE BRAVEST BY RON LANE

T

he citation for Edgar Thomas Johns of Restdown Tewantin, for bravery under fire reads as follows: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a machine gun in an advanced post amidst rough and difficult (conditions). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer: whilst galloping into action, he dismounted under heavy machine-gun fire to attend to three wounded men, and got them under cover. He showed utter disregard for danger.” Source: Commonwealth Gazette No 150. Reccomendation date 13 November 1917. As a result of this recommendation, Trooper Johns was to be awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal; an award at that time for diggers of non-commissioned rank and second only to the Victoria Cross. The second act of gallantry noted was performed while taking part in what military historians describe as the last great cavalry charge in military history; the charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba. The date was 31 October, 1917. On paper, with all things considered this should have been an absolute slaughter; a total of 800 diggers on horseback charging a garrison of 4400 Turks. Not only were they outnumbered five to one, but the Turks manning trenches on the perimeter of the town were well dug in and their arms consisted of rifles, machine-gun posts and most important of all a total of 48 field guns. So why should men be prepared to attack against such incredible odds? The answer was simple and could be summed up in one word - water. At the time of the attack it was estimated that both men and horses had been two days in this desert country without water and in the town of Beersheba there were

wells containing that life-giving liquid; an estimated 400,000 litres. However it was the opinion of staff officers that the capture of Beersheba was, for other reasons, of the utmost importance. Situated some 43 kilometres from the Turkish bastion of Gaza, a major stronghold, to capture this town via a flanking attack was essential to the Allies' advance in Palestine: already two frontal attacks on Gaza by British forces had proven futile. And so it was that at 4.30pm on the afternoon of 31 October this 23-year-old young man from Restdown Tewantin, Trooper Ted Johns would take part in a history-making cavalry charge. It was an attack that in the words of German officers manning the trenches with the Turks “only madmen would attempt.” But unlike the majority of diggers, mounted on Australian horses known as Walers, Ted would not be riding into battle with reins in one hand, bayonet in the other and rifle strapped across his back. For him it was reins in one hand and a stretcher held firm in the other, for on this occasion Ted's role was that of stretcherbearer; known in this era as a combat medic. He was not riding not to fight but to attend the wounded; and doing so in that dangerous stretch of desert known to both sides as No Man's Land. Trooper Johns would be totally exposed in the open and not able to shoot back when he came under fire from snipers and machine-guns. Then under the leadership of LieutenantColonels Bouchier, 4th Regiment and Cameron, 12th Regiment, from a distance of three kilometres they moved out at a canter, then into a trot and finally at a distance of some two kilometres from the Turk trenches, came the command: “Charge.” The diggers had been under heavy fire and many

Edgar's daughter-in-law Mrs Elvie Johns is proud to share the story of his life. were shot from their horses. Considering that they were charging over open desert the causalities should have been heavier, but as they were to discover later, their artillery had silenced the machineguns and with the diggers riding fast the enemy artillery couldn’t adjust their sights quickly enough. The shells started to land behind the charging horsemen. Then they were on top of the trenches, trenches which for reasons unknown the Turks had failed to protect with rows of barbed wire. Riding next to Johns, good mate and fellow stretcher-bearer Trooper John

Reynolds was shot from his horse, mortally wounded. It was then that the young digger from Restdown started the action that was to result in his being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry. Dismounting, he started to work on the wounded. Many years after the war he was to tell his daughter-in-law, Mrs Elvie Johns, exactly what happened. “I was galloping with the boys and saw them fall. I had put the stretcher up to shield this fellow and the bullets started whizzing around my head. I realized that the stretcher was a target so I put it down.”

“For Ted at the outbreak of World War I enlisting in the Light Horse was the thing to do,” said daughter-in-law Mrs Elvie Johns. Mrs Johns, who married Ted's son Allan, lives in Tewantin and has nothing but respect and fond memories of her fatherin-law. “You could say that he lived most of his young life on horseback, riding every day from his home at Restdown in Tewantin to the Tewantin School, a distance of sevenmile each way. At the time of our meeting I was 24 and an exceptional relationship developed, thus creating a very strong bond. Such was his presence that people always called him Mr Johns.” Before the war Ted, who came from a family of three brothers and a sister, had been farming with his family. It was a family that was without a doubt one of the pioneer groups of the Tewantin district. One of his brothers Harry, who was also a WWI veteran and saw action in the battle of the Somme, was with Ted, to play a major role in the formation of the Tewantin RSL in the years following the war. It was about this time that Ted met a young lady named Nellie Page and a relationship started to develop. "This was quite a courtship,” said Mrs Johns with a laugh. “Ted would row from Restdown (now known as Johns Landing) to Boreen Point to court the young lady. However the war started, Ted enlisted and was sent overseas

but there was no question about their relationship. Nellie waited and following his return on 4 July, 1919 they married and down through the years became the proud parents of five children. Once settled into the community things began to move. Ted purchased 365 acres of land in an area now known as Noosa Springs and Elysium and commenced dairy farming. It was following WWII that he sold the dairy farm but held an acreage that enabled him to grow small crops. Adding to this he invested in three blocks of land in Hasting Street where Netanya now stands: it was adjacent to the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. “For someone who left school at Grade 5 he certainly did well,” said Mrs Johns. “In 1950 he went to Maryborough, bought and dismantled an old army hospital and transported it to Hasting Street; he then built four flats on his land and rented them. Following this he built himself a home on the third block next to the surf club.” Another lady who enjoyed the pleasure of his friendship was Olive Donaldson, one of the legendary ladies of our TewantinNoosa RSL and Citizens Memorial Club. “I knew him well through our work in the club. Both Mr Johns and his brother Harry are a big part in the history of the foundation of our club. Such was the man's respect that when club or business meetings were held he was always introduced as Mr

Johns, DCM -and rightly so.” It was in his retirement years at his Main Beach home that he became friends with the Noosa lifesavers and would come down to watch the Sunday morning surf swims. Eventually his son Col joined the club and went on to hold the office of secretary. Further to this granddaughters Sally and Elvie Wytenburg also joined the club doing patrols and competing. Then on the morning of the Noosa shark attack it was Ted Johns who handed patrolman Ken Window a .303 military rifle hoping that Window could score a million to one shot into the brain of the shark; however it was never to be. However it was three shots fired by Window into the head of the shark that enabled the authorities, for the first time in world shark attack history (Readers Digest research department ) to positively identify the shark as the one responsible for the attack. Then on 16 July 1976 Mr Edgar Thomas (Ted) Johns, DCM, hero of the Light Horse charge at Beersheba passed away. Now on every Anzac Day we the people of Tewantin should take the time to read the name of this great man engraved on the memorial that fittingly stands next to the RSL - a digger who not only served his country and family but also his community. He was indeed a man of courage and respect - definitely one of Our People. Lest We Forget. ●

Edgar Johns.

NEW HALL - WE DID IT BY MARGARET MACCOLL When the Noosa District Pipe Band played Waltzing Matilda as it marched through the brand spanking new Cooroy Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon you could feel the pride of the towns people swell. Mayor Tony Wellington told how the hall had been incorporated with the School of Arts and between 1920 and 60 hosted dances, balls, weddings, Anzac Day ceremonies and was used as a film theatre. The hall closed in 2015 and in disrepair it seemed the likely option was to demolish the hall but that move was overturned by a groundswell of community support to save the iconic building. The Community Memorial Hall Association was formed in January last year led by president Paul Kluck. “We did it,“ Paul said on Saturday but it wasn’t without a lot of community input through donations, fund-raising and hard work. Paul had a long list of people to thank

Cooroy Memorial Hall Association president Paul Kluck. for their help. Noosa Council contributed $192,000 toward the rebuild and the community matched that sum in money and kind. The rebuild was led by head contractor Harry Kirk “and his merry band of volunteers“ who overcame challenges including termite damage and asbestos removals. Major contributions included a $50,000 donation from Bendigo Bank, a grant from the State Government gambling fund and “incredible support“ from Bunnings. The community filled the hall on Saturday to witness the end result and enjoy the entertainment.

DOOR SLAMS SHUT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa's Councillor Ingrid Jackson received no back-up from the other councillors when at council’s ordinary meeting last week she attempted to make general committee meeting minutes available to the public. The general committee meeting “is where the most significant or contentious matters are debated and amendments are won or lost,” she said. “In Noosa the public never sees these minutes.” By not seconding her motion, the other councillors prevented it from moving forward or being discussed. “I tried to move a motion in favour of transparency,” she said. “I was stopped from doing this.” Cr Jackson said not making the minutes available to the public caused council to be in breach of Local Government Regulation 2012 Section 272. While not gaining councillor backing, the motion has received public support on social media and a post of the motion has been so popular it has been viewed by more than 9000 people. Cr Jackson said the interest demonstrated the will of the people to have the minutes made public. Noosa Council CEO said under the Local Government Regulations, if a committee didn’t have final decision-making power, it was able to be exempted from keeping minutes which record each individual mover and seconder but it was still required to record the recommendations to the

Cr Ingrid Jackson. council from the committee. “That is currently what occurs in practice at Noosa Council,“ he said. “The council would be in breach of the legislation if our committees were delegated to make the final decision on behalf of council, but they are not.“ However council still needs to pass the exemption motion to be compliant with the regulation. “The council needs to tidy up technical compliance with the regulation by passing the exemption motion,“ the CEO said. Mayor Tony Wellington said from his perspective “raising an issue via a notified motion without discussing it first with the mayor and fellow councillors was not the right way to go about dealing with such a procedural matter". Cr Jackson said councillors had nine days' notice of the motion before it was delivered at the meeting. ●

TOUGH COST OF HOUSING BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Park Road will be cut down to one lane from today as work begins on the boardwalk from Little Cove to the Noosa National Park entrance. Hutchinson Builders have begun work to replace the 420m section of boardwalk. A temporary pedestrian walkway will be constructed and detours put in place to traffic.

KOALA WEEK EVENTS

The Airbnb forum drew heated discussion. Noosa Waters Residents Association president James Taylor said residents had concerns on the issue relating to parking, garbage, noise and having no system to deal with complaints. He said owners who rented out a spare bedroom were not the problem but whole house renters were more of a concern. “We believe legislation needs to exist and needs to be enforced,” he said. Short term Airbnb operator Adrienne Penny rents rooms in her house to help pay the bills but also offers them carers to give them a break. There are now 6-8 Airbnb hosts who followed her example and are

providing places for carers and refugees in the area. She said she was being penalised by council which charges her a tourism levy of $1600 a year. Mayor Tony Wellington said council wanted to find a more equitable tourism levy so people renting out a room weren’t treated the same as those renting a whole house, but everyone who rented property in Noosa should be paying a tourism levy He said Airbnbs were an issue for council’s new planning scheme which should come before the community by the end of the year. ●

Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKC) will be supporting several events throughout the week. On Saturday, 28 April Wild Koala Week will commence with a full day of rescue training at a Koala Awareness and Rescue Initiative Workshop led by Anika Lehmann from Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and Rachel Lyons from Wildcare Australia, and held at the Noosa District Landcare offices at Pomona Futures Centre. Contact Liz at lizbear@live.com.au to go on a waiting list. On Sunday 29 April, local koala photographer Bernard Jean will host his second Wild Koala Day Walk through Noosa National Park to spot wild koalas at Laguna Lookout at 9am. Finally on Thursday 3 May at 6pm, QKC president Meghan Halverson will discuss Wild Koala Day at the Rotary Club Noosa Daybreak Bookfest 2018 preview evening at the Noosa Leisure Centre. A range of views on the high costs in Noosa of rent and mortgage, the shortage of affordable housing and the impact of Airbnbs was aired at a forum held last week at Noosa Lions Football Club. The forum was organized by Cooroy Area Residents Association and Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association and brought together representatives from local and State Government, residents groups and Tourism Noosa. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton told the gathering of more than 100 people Airbnb and affordable housing were complicated issues and lacking in statistical information. She said with some of the most expensive housing and rentals in Australia, Noosa's numbers of low income earners paying up to 80 per cent of their income on rent or a mortgage was growing. She said anecdotally people were renting out spare rooms and granny flats to make extra income and it resulted in positives and negatives in the community. As a community it was possible to plan for affordable housing but it required the will of the community, she said. Tourism Noosa director Elizabeth Reynolds said the organisation was deeply concerned about the impact of Airbnb and had formed a reference group that was gathering information from the community. “We think people who benefit should pay,” she said.

PFaF holds its first meeting last week.

CONSULTATION CRASHES Three Peregian Beach community groups have withdrawn from the six-member Peregian Beach surf club consultation. Peregian Beach Community Association president Barry Cotterell said Peregian Beach Community Association, Peregian Beach Community House and Peregian Beach Surf Club had withdrawn. “The Peregian Beach Community is not prepared to give legitimacy to a process which has the goal of a new surf club house on the skate bowl site,” he said. The withdrawal follows the consultations second meeting which occurred on 14 April. Following the meeting Peregian Family and Friends Association (FPaFA) which organised the consultation process said several actions had been agreed at the

meeting which had included Peregian Springs Residents Association and Peregian Beach Business Association. PFaFA spokeswoman Leigh McCready said PFaFA had raised about $11,000 toward to engage community engagement professional Leisa Prowse Consulting to conduct the consultation. The group with about 240 members held its first meeting last week. Mr Cotterell said PBCAI would now organise a public meeting, to inform the community of what is possible with the existing surf club house and Noosa Council’s operation of the Peregian Beach parkland and it’s facilities for the future. “Noosa Heads Surf Club will also be invited to say what they are proposing with the club,” he said. ●

The only timber research centre of its kind celebrated its 100th birthday last week. The Salisbury Research Facility is finding new processing solutions and maximising the use of small plantation grown logs, both hardwood and softwood and developing new engineered products from veneer and sawn timber. When established in 1918 as the Forest Products Bureau Director of Forests Edward Swain recognised that the unchecked take of favoured timber species from our native forests was unsustainable. Uses had to be found and markets developed for the lesserknown species. Work at this site has seen the adoption of many innovations, including the first ever high temperature drying trials to overcome the challenges of drying plantation grown conifers. Wood preservation programs were established to develop wood treatment solutions, and countless graded timber recovery studies have been undertaken on a wide range of species. ●

HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND BABIES IMPROVING The health of Australia’s pregnant women and their babies has improved across a range of health indicators, with infant death rates and the rate of women smoking during pregnancy on

the decline, according to a new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The report, Child and maternal health 2013-’15, presents findings on four indicators measuring the health of babies and their mothers: infant and young child deaths, the rate of newborn babies who are of a low birthweight, mothers smoking during pregnancy, and mothers attending antenatal care services during the first trimester of their pregnancy. The report shows that despite generally positive results across these indicators nationally, these positive trends are not seen equally across Australia’s 31 Primary Health Network (PHN) areas. The report is available at www. myhealthycommunities.gov.au The AIHW will next month be releasing its first report on the health and well-being of teenage mothers and their babies. ●

SOCIAL SCENE

PLANT LOVERS PROJECT A PARADISE BY MARGARET MACCOLL The J Theatre was packed to overflowing with foodies and vegan followers on Saturday for the inaugural Noosa Vegan Festival. A wide range of savoury and sweet delights was available to tempt festival goers. There were ice-creams, chocolates, cakes, coffees, juices, pizzas, falafels and donuts among the choices and no animal participation required. Food and product producers displayed

their meat-free goods with great enthusiasm. While meat products were obvious by their absence there was a sole comment to human’s treatment of animals provided by renowned sand sculptor Dennis Massoud who created a sand horse at the festival entrance. “They’re one of the most abused animals on the planet,“ he said. “We use them for transport, in wars, we race them and when they’re too old we turn them into dog food.“ ●

OUTSTANDING SHOW I attended the opening night of Funny Girl. Many shows I have attended at the Noosa Arts Theatre and am always astounded at the high calibre of shows this little theatre produces, but this one tops them all. The direction by Ian Mackeller and Jo Hendrie was flawless. Every aspect of the show was spectacular. From the opening scene with the exquisite stage design, the magnificent costumes, outstanding choreography by Libby Hendrie, the sound and lighting and of course the very talented performers on stage. They were all fabulous, but the main star Michelle Lamarca was absolutely brilliant. She has a powerful voice and very convincing acting and dancing. Michelle’s performance was on a par with the Broadway performance by Barbara Streisand portraying the singer comedienne Fanny Brice. If you haven’t seen this show, do yourself a favour and grab a ticket before it’s sold out. Congratulations to the entire cast. Cherry Bright, Noosaville

TOURISTS SHOULD BE WELCOME Over the past couple of months I have noticed a few negative letters to the editor regarding the influx of tourists at peak holiday times and during organised events. While I agree this influx can cause some minor inconvenience to local residents, we must remember the positive influence that these tourists and visitors bring to our region and its economy. After visiting Noosa as a tourist for over 33 years Noosa’s natural beauty, temperate climate, relaxed lifestyle and warm friendly residents were hard to ignore and we finally made the decision nine years ago to move permanently to Noosa - like many other “local” residents have done. We purchased a business here in Noosa. We are proud to say we hire many local business contractors and we outsource many other tasks to other local businesses such as electricians and plumbers. This flow-on effect is vital for Noosa families living and working in the Noosa Shire and its economy. Our business is just one of many thousands of small businesses within the Noosa Shire that are dependent on tourists and visitors coming to our region and spending. We are also fortunate that many of our children are now able to reside and work within the region, a privilege that many regional communities do not share. As residents, we personally enjoy the variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment. It allows us to enjoy a lifestyle that oth-

Noosa is a unique destination and is renowned internationally. The local community and the Noosa tourism and hospitality industry are passionate about where we live. We need to ensure that visitors are welcomed to our region and work positively to secure a strong economic environment for young families to prosper within the shire, while working with tourism bodies and local councils to protect our environment. PLASTIC CHALLENGE ONGOING You gotta feel sorry for the do-gooders for slapping their backs to celebrate the “ban the bag” victory. Actually, they haven’t won anything; the laughing winners are the supermarkets that save about one cent per shopping bag (biodegradable) no longer provided and are now selling you bin liners (petro chemical) for 19 cents apiece. But people are not stupid. They now avail themselves of the dog-waste bags (compostable - even better!) graciously provided by council. Instead of rolling with the ban-the-bag wagon, why have authorities not imposed compostable bags on the supermarkets? Bags are only the tip of plastic berg. The supermarket shelves are loaded with meat

and fruit and veg individually wrapped in heavy duty plastic foil on indestructible polystyrene trays. How do we stop that nonsense? Unwrap your purchase at the checkout or collect the trays at home and bring them back to the shop. Let’s keep the fight against plastic bottles for another day. It’s a bigger challenge to find commonsense in people who pay three times the price of petrol for water that comes free from any tap. J. Konrad, Peregian

WHAT ARE NOOSA RIVER’S FISH TARGETS? As the discussion and debate on (prawns and oysters in Noosa River) has moved to concrete actions such as oyster bed trials and Biosphere funding, surely we need now to understand the detail of how we will objectively measure all activity today and how the future will be managed? Few could, should or would argue against doing anything proactive in the shire to protect the intrinsic values that combine to give us our Noosa Lifestyle i.e. fauna, flora, culture and physical surrounds. But this process should acknowledge all facts and not just some if we are as a community to protect our lifestyle. When I started researching this topic I saw a lot of ‘blame-game’ positioning from both sides. Few could argue that any commercial activity is not going to have an impact, but other data show other influences

at play - ones that need to be considered for the future of prawns and oysters in the Noosa River. The rock oyster industry in southern Queensland peaked in 1891 producing around 21,000 sacks (at 90 kg per sack = around 1890 tonnes; Smith 1981; Lergessner 2006; Diggles 2013). Smith (1981) noted that around 80 per cent of the production at this time was generated by oyster banks, while dredge oysters comprised only about 20 per cent of the harvest after the dredge sections were damaged by the floods of 1887, 1889 and 1890. Even though production dwindled from that time onwards, during the decade 1901-’10 the industry reached its peak for the number of men employed, banks and sections leased, and boats licensed (Smith 1981). For example, the total number of dredge sections in Queensland reached an all-time high in 1904 with 64 leased, but from then on there was a gradual decline. According to Glen S. Smith ‘Southern Queensland Oyster Industry” 22/10/1981, by 1936 Queensland itself was importing New South Wales oysters, a situation that still continues.’ Along with the effects of mud worm disease, this rise of the New South Wales industry was the major contributor to the decline of Queensland’s industry. NESPMARINE SEQ Oyster History Report shows that the dredge sections were the first to experience production declines from the late 1880s, with production on the intertidal banks also declining over time to less than 1/10th of their 1891 peak by 1980 (Smith 1981). Many authors have studied the decline and all agree it was due to a combination of events potentially including overfishing, disease and declining water quality. However, there is some disagreement about the extent of the respective roles of these events. Outbreaks of “mudworm disease” due to infection by spionid polychaete mudworms was the main reason why oystering for S. glomerata in subtidal dredge sections was abandoned (Smith 1981). Indeed, in hindsight it is much more likely that acute post-flood mass mortalities were due to either prolonged hyposalinity, smothering of oyster beds with silt, and/or infection by then unknown diseases such as QX disease. The NPA/Thomas Foundation state as their objective to “ ... return the river’s aquatic species to a level of sustainable use, accessible to everyone ... “ then ... · What is the base case? What is an acceptable number by the 40 species of fish (or should it be more?) and four species of prawns by square metre or other measure and in what time period? · What should the targets be in say five years? 10 years? 20 years and beyond? · Will greater fish stocks attract more fishermen? Does this mean greater controls over the river e.g. only electric or paddle boats? Fishing licences? · If scientists agree that disease and other natural impacts such as silting were major contributors to the decline of oysters in the Noosa River, then how do you plan and manage against that as part of these plans? Nick Hluszko, Noosa North Shore

Jaw-dropping moments begin at the front entrance with its oh-so-wide double glass doors and a striking art piece cleverly formed into a flower using pieces of Panadanus prop roots. It is obvious the interior design harmonises perfectly with its exterior and the spellbinding, wide north-easterly river backdrop. RENTAL MARKET NEW ERA FOR TIGHTENS ALL OVER ARCHITECTURE

Calls for more rental market investors to ease uncomfortably tight market.

A well-known leader in the field of architecture has taken up a new post as chief custodian of the profession in Queensland. Bruce Medek has been appointed as Chair of the Board of Architects Queensland, which works behind the scenes to ensure architectural standards are maintained. With more than 30 years in the industry, the director of Medek Architects has been a member of the board of Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland, which administers a range of community projects including Tidy Towns and Clean and Healthy Beaches.

Last year APRA implemented new measures to tackle risks within the mortgage lending market, aimed at improving the quality of new mortgage lending and moderating the growth of investor lending. The measures were introduced with the aim of limiting the flow of new interestonly lending, manage lending to investors below the benchmark of 10 per cent growth, ensure interest rates and net income buffers are appropriate for current conditions and restrain lending growth in higher risk segments. The aim was to ensure lenders recognised the heightened risk in the lending environment, and that their lending standards were appropriate for the conditions. At the time, interest-only terms accounted for 40 per cent of the stock of residential mortgage lending by Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions (ADIs) - a share that was quite high by international and historical standards, according to APRA. ●

“Bruce brings to the role strong design talents, a commitment to clients and an in-depth knowledge of construction, contracts and standards,” Housing Minister Mick de Brenni said. “... Every year, tens of thousands of Queenslanders, as well as companies and institutions, rely on architectural services - they deserve to have confidence that everyone using the title ‘architect’ has the necessary qualifications, skills and practical experience to ensure their objectives are met.” To check if you are dealing with a registered architect do a free search at www.boaq.qld.gov.au. ●

CONFIDENCE ON THE UP AND UP CONFIDENCE in the Queensland property sector is growing, the latest results from the quarterly ANZ/Property Council Survey have revealed. Positive expectations for state economic growth brought Queensland’s confidence levels to its highest since the beginning of 2015. The shift in sentiment has increased by 13 index points since June 2017 and Queensland executive director of the Property Council, Chris Mountford, said the increase could be attributed to the commencement of exciting new infrastructure projects. “The opportunities created by

additional jobs facilitates interstate migration,“ he said. “Queensland has been expecting increased migration for years, due to our lower property prices and fantastic amenities- now we have the job growth to support it. “With major projects underway across both the public and private sectors, this is a very exciting time for Queensland. While confidence within the industry is growing, Queensland is still experiencing the lowest sentiment in the country.“ ●

12382355-RC12-18

MORE investors are needed to combat the “uncomfortably tight“ rental market in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, according to Queensland’s peak real estate body. The latest rental vacancy rates reveal renters continue to face a shortage of properties and rising rents. Noosa’s rental vacancy rate for the March quarter sits at 0.8 per cent, while the Sunshine Coast overall has a vacancy rate of one per cent. Caloundra and Gympie have the tightest vacancy rates in the state, with just 0.5 per cent of rental properties available. Real Estate Institute of Queensland chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said REIQ would like to see more investors enter the markets. “The Sunshine Coast is very challenging for renters who are looking for accommodation and we have said consistently for quite some time that this market would benefit from additional investor activity,“ she said. “The upward pressure on rents, as a result of this tight vacancy rate, will serve to push this market towards unaffordable.“ Ms Mercorella said it was no surprise that renters were flocking to Noosa. “It’s a stunning part of the world with employment opportunities, but additional supply into this market would be very beneficial,“ she said. While the REIQ called for more investment, Ms Mercorella said the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s (APRA) tightened lending criteria would discourage investors. “The result is tight markets remain tight, despite good opportunities for landlords in those markets,“ she said.

LIVE

THIRSTY FOR MORE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Hot off the road from the first Take Me Back shows as well as supporting Bryan Adams on his recent Australian tour, Thirsty Merc aren’t ready to put the car back in the garage and have announced a final round of Take Me Back anniversary shows around the country. A little over 15 years ago, Thirsty Merc bounded onto the music scene with their Summertime sounds, making their mark on radio and TV over the ensuing years. The Take Me Back tour is a celebration

of all the music along the way and fans can expect to hear all the hits as well as songs they’ve never heard the band previously perform live. Thirsty Merc formed in Sydney in 2002 releasing their debut EP, First Work, in September, 2003, before being signed to Warner Music. The band’s big break came in 2004 with the release of their debut, self-titled, album which included the hits, Someday Someday and In The Summertime (the theme for Bondi Rescue since 2006). Two more studio albums followed -

Slideshows in 2007 (#4 ARIA Album) and Mousetrap Heart in 2010 (#14 on the ARIA Album chart) which included radio staples, 20 Good Reasons, Mousetrap Heart and Tommy and Krista Fast forward to 2015 - Thirsty Merc released Shifting Gears, their first wholly independent and first new material in five years and spent the next few months crossing the country; running up thousands of Frequent Flyer points and sold out shows. Besides the hits, the Take Me Back Tour is a celebration of all the music along the

way and fans can expect to hear songs they’ve never heard the band perform live before. Lead singer, Rai Thistlethwayte, said: “It’s thanks to the fans that we’re still here, loving life and music, 15 years later and this tour is a big 'thank you' to everyone who’s sung along with us over the years, as well as a great opportunity to dust off some songs we’ve never included in our shows.“ Thirsty Merc perform on Saturday,12 May at Villa Noosa. Tickets available now via www.villanoosa.com.au ●

THE MAVIS’S ARE BACK BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Mavis’s announce a special 20th anniversary tour for those much loved Pink Pills. Darlings of a time when Rage and Recovery were a staple in the TV diet and Triple J was the on speed-dial, The Mavis’s rode the radio waves with their singles ‘Naughty Boy’ and ‘Cry’ on high rotation while they frequented the Hey Hey it’s Saturday stage. From Ballarat babes to national treasures, a tour with Kylie - the Impossible Princess and headliners of the summer festival circuit, The Mavis’s were a force to be reckoned with. Their sound was like ABBA noosatoday.com.au

through a Rock N’ Roll time machine, layered harmonies over menacing guitars. Their look was Make-up and Punk-Rock hair. The forefathers/mothers of cyber fashion that would take today’s youth to task. Their Platinum selling ARIA-nominated album ‘Pink Pills’, a pop masterpiece of the 90s continues to be a glittery jewel loved and praised by their die-hard fans. Now 20 years after it’s release - The Mavis’s are back! With special guests Screamfeeder, don’t miss this one on Saturday 5 May at the Villa Noosa Hotel. Doors open 8pm and tickets are only $29.60 from www.villanoosa.com. au ● Thursday, 26 April, 2018

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Primal Heart by Kimbra

Breath

Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of long-held secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood - and the danger of believing that planning and following the rules can avert disaster, or heartbreak. ●

Kiwi singer-songwriter Kimbra is now two albums deep from ’Single That We Used To Know’. Although that Gotye collaboration got her recognition as a featured voice, Kimbra’s work in her own right under her own terms should never be overshadowed. New LP Primal Heart is strong and bold, led by driving percussion and distinctive vocals. Opener The Good War wakes the listener up with swagger, while next drop Top Of The World is already a contender for ’Most Commanding Performance Of The Year’: part rap, part chant, part anthem - all parts excellent. From here there are departures into more conventional contemporary pop. ●

Actor Simon Baker (The Mentalist) helms, co-writes and stars in this surf drama based on Tim Winton’s bestselling novel. Set in mid-70s coastal Western Australia. It is based on Tim Winton’s award-winning and international best-selling novel set in mid-70s coastal Australia. Two teenage boys, hungry for discovery, form an unlikely friendship with a mysterious older adventurer who pushes them to take risks that will have a lasting and profound impact on their lives. Observed with warmth and sensitivity, this is a rewarding coming-of-age drama that features terrific performances from two young newcomers in the central roles. ●

WHAT’S ON ARIA NOMINEE BUNKERS DOWN Alternative singer/songwriter and 90s favourite Diana Anaid is heading to the Sunshine Coast for what promises to be an unforgettable night, as she performs in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday night, 27 April. Diana returns with the quirky and upbeat My Queen, on her ’Better Girl’ album tour of the East Coast. Starting in 1997, Anaid’s self-funded and self-produced feral-folk debut stood out amongst the hip hop and teen-pop that was dominating the 90s airwaves, spawning the number one alternative hit I Go Off, and leaving many to wonder if this young mum was just another one trick pony. Diana’s follow up I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant saw her receive her fifth ARIA nomination and her second inclusion in Triple J’s Hottest 100, crossing into commercial radio with Don’t Believe In Love and silencing those who had placed her in the one-hit-wonder pile. With comparisons to Liz Phair, P.J Harvey and Ani DiFranco, Diana Ah Naid (as she was known until changing it to the palindromic Anaid) in 2004 cracked the U.S market with Last Thing and her ‘No Boys Allowed’ campaign, which saw the single climb into the Billboard Top 40. Anaid is a stand-out musician who “continues delivering authentic, original music” (Kathy McCabe)“, and is a pioneer of a “Different kind of girl power” (Music Network). Diana’s career highlights include US

If you’ve found yourself pining for the bygone years of tight pleather jumpsuits, wild beards, and falsetto voices then yearn no longer! The UK Bee Geez are here to deliver one of the best tribute shows to the Bee Gees - and they're coming to Tewantin Noosa RSL. This thrilling cover band has only been in Australia for a short while and already they are the premier tribute band to the legendary Gibb brothers. UK Bee Geez has been performing in England since 2000, but their musical reign didn’t stay there. The UK Bee Geez have travelled across the globe spreading their funky homage to Robin and Barry to many audiences, including India, South Africa, Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia, and all over Europe, appearing on many television and radio shows as they went.

But don’t take our word for it, the long list of professionals they have worked alongside speaks for itself. The UK Bee Geez have worked with headline acts such as The Village People, The Supremes, The Temptations, Leo Sayer, John Paul Young, and Marcia Hines to name a few. You can expect to hear the original hits such as “Stayin’ Alive”, “How Deep Is Your Love”, “Night Fever”, and so many more. The UK Bee Geez will be replaying songs from 1967 right through to 1999, all of them chart toppers. Come down and join in the Saturday night fever at the Tewantin Noosa RSL. he UK Bee Geez will be starting the show on Saturday 28 April at 8pm. Grab the RSL courtesy bus, book a table and enjoy a night of great music and high energy performers. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

How’s this rail-grab cuttie from Tyler Wright, the day before all hell broke loose. Photo WSL.

Screen grabs from Channel 7’s coverage of the attacks show the attack in progress, Jason Longgrass getting medical attention at the beach, his bitten board and a great white heading for its whale dinner near the surf break.

A WILD WEEK IN THE WEST Within hours of me writing about Julian Wilson’s charge to regain the yellow jersey at Margaret River, two surfers were attacked by great whites at breaks surrounding nearby Gracetown. Within another 48 hours World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt had cancelled the 2018 Margaret River Pro, and in all probability, the break’s future as a world tour stop. I thought the attack on Mick Fanning at Jeffrey’s Bay in 2015 would be the death knell for that venue too, but the WSL went back the following year, and in 2017 Mick Fanning was again involved in a shark scare when a great white did a couple of laps of the point during a heat and the boys had to scramble for the rescue boat. But for the WSL, it may well be a case of once bitten twice shy, and the Margaret River cancellation has all sorts of ramifications for the future of pro surfing. It’s easy to argue that the Margaret River should never have been allowed to start, with the southwest coast littered with rotting whale carcasses following mass beachings a couple of weeks earlier. If this wasn’t a playground made in heaven for cruising great whites, throw in the biggest salmon run in years. I understand that plenty of locals were still surfing when it was good, but plenty more were choosing to sit it out, just as they did at the height of the Ballina big bite. Presumably the WSL knew all this but didn’t consider it a significant enough risk to call the whole jam off. That would be consistent with the decision last year to put the surfers back in the water at J-Bay as soon as the shark had rounded the point. And certainly, at tour locations known for being sharky, like J-Bay and Margarets, the WSL employs a small army of jet ski and boat drivers who know their stuff. This is noosatoday.com.au

particularly true of Margarets, where former tour head judge Perry Hatchett and his team know those waters intimately and can sense danger instinctively. And then, out of the blue and two days later, having had two sleeps on it, Sophie Goldschmidt cancels, writing to competitors: “The WSL puts the highest premium on safety. This cannot be just talk, and it cannot be compromised. Surfing is a sport that carries various forms of risk, and is unique in that wild animals inhabit our performance environment. There have been incidents in the past - and it’s possible that there will be incidents in the future - which did not (and will not) result in the cancellation of an event. However, current circumstances are very unusual and troubling, and we have decided that the elevated risk during this season’s Margaret River Pro has crossed the threshold for what is acceptable.” The threshold of acceptability is going to become much more difficult to define in the future, given the precedent established here. During the rounds of the Margaret River Pro that were completed at Margaret River main break and at North Point, there were no shark sightings, let alone incidents, so does it mean that the WSL would consider cancelling the Jeffreys Bay event if there was a shark sighting at nearby Cape St Francis? Or perhaps pull the rug on the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast if sharks were spotted at Ballina? Where does it end? A few surfing cynics have suggested that all of this might even be a ploy to put the whole world tour in a wave pool. And, oh, that’s right, the WSL owns the Kelly Slater Wave Company and is about to put on a specialty tour event at the pool prototype at Lemoore, California, next month as a prelude to its debut as a world tour stop. With all the conjecture about what the Margaret River situation means for pro

surfing, it’s been easy to forget what it means to the poor buggers who got munched last Monday. Both surfers have survived with limbs intact, but it was a near thing. Alex Travaglini, 37, an Argentinian father of two who has been living in the area for several seasons, was out for an early at a break called Cobblestones, about three kilometres up the coast from North Point, when a four-metre-long great white savaged him, ripping into his upper legs and thighs. The water at Cobblestones had actually been cleared shortly after sunrise, when a big great white had cruised the break, but after about an hour of watching perfect sets go unridden, Travaglini and a few mates decided to risk it. A big, fit former rugby player, Travaglini kicked and punched the shark - reminiscent of Mick Fanning’s fight for life - and was able to thrust the nose of his board into its mouth and swim away, his surf buddies bravely helping him to shore where they probably saved his life by applying leg-rope tourniquets to both his legs. Word went round the beach carparks like greased lightning that, on top of the whale carcasses and the salmon run, a bloke had actually been attacked, but apparently it didn’t get to Jason Longgrass, 41, who decided to go for a paddle in the early afternoon at a break called Lefties, about a kilometer away from Cobblestones. Drone shots later revealed that there was a whale carcass wrapped around a bouy just a couple of hundred metres away from the break, so it was the perfect storm really. A great white reared up from the edge of the reef and attacked him, but Longgrass was even luckier than Travaglini, managing to scramble onto the reef and get to shore with just a few puncture marks and a badly bitten board. Just another manic Monday in the wild west. ●

AROUND THE GROUNDS

GREAT START TO SEASON BY ADRIANE SEABORN Under 6 Noosa v Flinders and Eumundi The first match of the season took place this Saturday at Brothers with the U6 Dolphins playing two exciting games against Flinders and Eumundi. Each week we are seeing a vast improvement with lots of free running rugby and try scoring. A great team effort with Archie and Zac both receiving Man of the Match awards. The boys are loving their after match tradition of forming an arch to thank the opposition. Under 8 Noosa Fins V Caloundra Under 8 Fins played their first Competition Round against Caloundra at Caloundra. With the weather looking Grim the team stuck together and went in full force. We had Angus, Jacob and Kellen went in to score tries and we also had great defence and always giving it his best from Noah Massingham who was our Man of the Match. Fantastic start to the 2018 Season boys! Under 10s Noosa Fins 34 defeat Caloundra 5 Even in unfavourable conditions on Saturday the Fins were victorious against Caloundra. The Fins once again displayed exceptional sportsmanship by lending Caloundra 4 players each half. A huge thank you goes to Levi, Max, Fin, Benji, Toby, Ezekiel, Hope and Rory for their dedication to the game and their display of true sportsmanship. Player of

Sailabilty united with the Endeavour Foundation recently to provide a sailing experience for five young adults. Spokeswoman Jackie Olsen said the sailing proved a very happy experience for the young adults who were teamed with volunteers at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. “It was such an important experience for them socially, for building confidence and for learning new skills. ●

CHRIS TAKES FINAL ROUND BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Ready to go. the match went to Wilkie Anderson and special mention to Rohan Nichol for their teamwork. Overall it was a great start to the official junior Rugby Union season. U12 Noosa Reds 34 defeated Caloundra 7 A big crowd turned out to watch the Noosa reds play their arch rivals Caloundra. Last year these 2 teams had several close encounters but Noosa dominated with a solid effort in slippery conditions. Coach’s orders were to hit the line with heart and the team didn’t disappoint with Zac Nichol

ROUND 4 – APRIL 28 NOOSA AFC VS UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND AFC

2018 QFA DIVISION 1 HART SPORT CUP

SAILING BUILDS SKILLS

Under 12s Div 1 match report from game on 22 April. Round 1 has finally arrived, I think as a coach I was just as excited as the kids. To date we have only had the one practice match against a team which was a Div 2 team, so we really didn’t know what to expect today. We were up against one of the better Maroochydore teams at Maroochydore in some difficult weather conditions. There was a very strong wind favouring one end. Maroochydore come flying out of the blocks kicking with the wind, but our defence held strong to not let it blow out too much. In the 2nd quarter we had the wind but Maroochydore flew out of the blocks with a quick goal in the first few minutes. From there we dominated to quarter, with Cooper starting to get control out of the ruck with Rory in and under and Ethans run and carry superb. We went into half time 23 points down with them kicking with the strong breeze in the 3rd. We made some changes to block them up and Leroy’s and Zac’s strong body work in the middle and with Jordy starting to shine with some really tough possessions. Jago’s tackling pressure and Josh’s tough work in defence we were able to keep them nearly scoreless. Now that they had played 3 quarters together they were starting to link up and play for each other. We went into the last quarter with an attacking line up to take on the game 27 points down. Well, didn’t the boys take on the challenge. Maroochydore come at us early but Toby’s tough defence and hitting targets started to free us up. Ben and Beau started to find space, but collectively as a team everyone stood up and we only fell short by 7 points, inaccuracy and some balls touched on the goal line was

the difference. I was really proud of how the kids took the game on and come home showing the true Tigers fighting spirit. Everyone played their part and played well but Ethan and Rory were our best for the day. Now that we have had one game under our belt we will definitely improve moving forward. Under 17’s Youth Girls Carnival - match report The Noosa tigers football club hosted the first of two under 17s girls carnival on a glorious Friday night last week. AFL Queensland are running the carnivals to attract increased interest in girls footy at this age group and what the girls presented last Friday would certainly not have disappointed. Four Sunshine Coast clubs competed in the carnival including host club Noosa, Kawana, Hinterland and Coolum. Each team played each other once in 2 by 10 minute halves throughout the night with the Noosa Tigers Youth girls being the standout of the night winning all three games. All games were played with great spirit and the feeling around the ground suggested heaps of fun and enjoyment was being had. Maggie Harmer was clearly the standout of the night as she repeatedly won the footy and burst through contests at will. However the performance of first year AFL convert India Madden did not go unnoticed by the tiger faithful who were suitably impressed by her skills and natural ability. Another carnival this Friday night with the Hinterland Blues hosting. For more information on how to get a game call Pittsy on 0409 554 429. ● noosatoday.com.au

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

BEST NATIONALS FOR THE LOCALS When one sees the results achieved by both Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads surf clubs at the recent Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held in Perth, we can be sure that the words well done to both would definitely not be suffice. The overall performance has been history making for both; not just the medal counts but also the great numbers that were good enough to reach the finals of their respective events. What can we say; an outstanding effort by all coaches, administrators, parents and supporters. When we look at Sunshine’s result sheet this becomes very obvious. They came home with a total of 4 gold 4 silver and 4 bronze their best medal count ever. Then on further reading we see the very encouraging facts that every boy in the u/17 division and every girl in both the u/17 and u/15s also made the finals of their events. This definitely speaks volumes for their surf sports administration and above all their coach Josh Minogue, who has just completed his first year as Head Coach. With such an outstanding performance from their youth the future for this small

in the champion lifesaver event; this event is what our work is all about. For years judges at the Nationals have been protesting “This is what we do it should be getting more publicity.” So a great result. This year Noosa has achieved the unthinkable; two of our open individual competitors, an event team and one youth have come home with outstanding achievements. The Iron Woman Championship of Australia was won by Lana Rogers, the Mens Open Surf Race won by and Nick Sloman and In the team event Noosa again set a record that will be hard to equal; the ladies Taplin Relay, Lana Rogers, Jordan Mercer and Electra Outram not only won gold but unbelievable as it may sound went through all major carnivals in Australia with only loss. Then in the Youth beach sprint and beach flags Kai Thompson made history by winning the double. Similar to Sunshine, Noosa in the u/17, won gold in our lifesaving categories, the Patrol Competition and First Aid. Noosa also kept the 69 year boat tradition alive when the ladies u/19 won silver. ●

Aussies - Ruby Nolan, Charli McKinley, Talisha Brady, Olivia Emanuel club does look very promising indeed. Perhaps one of the most pleasing aspects is to see the results have come from right the across the board with success in swim, taplin, ski, board and champion lifesaver. For the Noosa club they have also achieved their best medal count ever with a total of 12 gold 8 silver and 8 bronze. Again a big pat on the back for all involved. With this being Noosas 90th year to achieve such results has indeed been a very long wait.

Head Coach Darren Mercer along with Lenore Grice and team you finally broke the drought. From all supporters many thanks. In the world of sport when two teams such as Sunshine and Noosa achieve such results, to single out individuals may seem unfair, but at these titles there have been some ground breaking performances. For example two Sunshine competitors Amelia Ross gold medal and Jade Hooper silver won their medals competing for u/15 girls

WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER - SO WET A LINE! With a couple of cooler mornings last week, it seems the change in seasons is almost upon us. With this we are seeing a change in water temperatures that has seen a wide mix of species getting caught in close and out wide. Spanish mackerel are still about and will start to feed hard on the run up to the full moon as water temperatures start to drop. These fish will head north so to target them you may have to do a run up to the northern reefs like Double Island and trolling high speed trolling lures are great while on the move. For the bait anglers nothing beats a live bait so make sure you have your jigs to gather them. For the reef anglers using larger 4-7 inch soft plastics around Sunshine Reef has been a great way to get onto the snapper, sweetlip and the odd coral trout. Great profiles to try include Jerk Shads, Flick Baits and Streakz. Now is the time of year where having a pillie floater

Stan Anderson with a nice Jew from a very secret spot. out the back in a burley trail is a must. Larger snapper will regularly feed away from the safety of the reef and it is a great way of finding a rogue mackerel or two. A couple of anglers made the trip to the Hards and the Barwon Banks last week with some good results. Conditions were a little sloppy so it was only for the larger craft. Some good trout came from up towards Double Island while the Banks fished well for snapper,

around structures. Fishing baits like prawn, mullet gut, fowl gut and whitebait have claimed some great fish. Whiting are still on offer around the mouth area with the dog beach and the frying pan the prime spots and live worms and fresh yabbies seem to be claiming a good feed. For the anglers that love the sand between their toes, the beach seen has also been firing. Tailor are starting to show with the stretch between Teewah and Double Island producing some quality chopper and the odd greenback. This year is again shaping up to be a cracker so dust off the beach gear and get amongst it. Good flathead, bream and the ever-present dart are also inhabiting the same gutters. Baits of choice have been pilchards, mullet strip baits and bonito fillet. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

pearl perch, sweetlip, mori cod, and jew. In the River the surface action has really been firing up, with Woods Bay and around Munna Bridge the place to be, Trevally, tailor and Queenfish are all on the bite. Poppers and stick baits in the 45-70mm range have been the most successful fished on 6-8lb leaders. Flathead are still getting caught right throughout the system on a range of soft plastics and fresh baits. Soft plastics in the 2.5-3 inch size worked along the drop offs are working well. Using the right size and weight jig head is crucial so the more run you have the heaver the head will have to be. Be sure to use a good coating of scent to increase your catch rate. There are still great numbers of crabs getting caught in the system remember 4 pots per person on board the boat. The winter bream are also starting to make their way into the river and have been taken

TOP EFFORT FROM DRAGONS A FINE DISPLAY

TIGERS TAKE IT

BY DOUG TOMS

BY JULIAN PITTS

U7s At Kawana Brothers Junior Rugby Union Football Club on Saturday the Eumundi Dragons U7s again put on a fine display of their developing rugby skills in front of a very appreciative and supportive audience. Ably led by captain of the week Billy Gunton the boys ran hard when in possession and are really starting to understand the importance of ball passing and its role in breaking through the opposition’s defence. Brooklyn was strong in attack and defence as was Finn , Zac and Tristan. The outstanding player of the week , as voted by the coaching staff , was George Hillhouse. George was in the thick of the action for the full game.

U8s At Brothers JRUFC on Saturday was the first time that the Dragons U8s played a match as a separate entity . Before Easter these boys played as part of a combined U8/U9 team. This being their first game as such, all players can be very proud of their team’s performance against a well drilled Noosa

Reds outfit. Coach Will Vine was pleased with his team’s enthusiasm throughout the entire match. Although the boys started tentatively it wasn’t long before they all got into the action tackling opposition players who were in possession of the ball and running hard and straight when the Dragons were on the attack. Jett, Ted , Zimmi , Oakey, Jasper and Max all displayed a developing understanding of the game and excellent sportsmanship. A couple of times some of Max’s tackles drew applause from the very supportive group of parents and sideline supporters. Player of the week, Joshua Vine , scored a try , made many tackles and ran straight when in possession of the ball. This was an effort that he should be very proud of. ●

Slipped away.

Running for it.

Tackled.

Tricky dodge.

A special mention should be made of Nixon Griggs , who though only five years of age , stepped up from the U6s and showed excellent speed with the ball in hand. Every player in the team played their game at the highest level of sportmanship we have come expect from the mighty Dragons !

The Rococo Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have made it two wins in a row following a hard fought victory in the grand final replay against arch rivals Maroochydore last Saturday. The annual 2018 Anzac Day ceremony coincided with our sponsors day and as per usual a strong local crowd witnessed a pretty hard fought but scrappy affair. Both teams looked to put numbers behind the ball throughout and goal kicking from both teams was poor, however it was a fantastic contest to witness. The boys from Weyba road dominated the first half only to squander many scoring opportunities and leave the game ajar for Maroochydore to mount a comeback. In the second half the 2017 premiers threatened however the Noosa Tigers AFC just kept coming up with the answers to run away 14 point victors. Whilst the game never reached any great heights standard wise (possibly due to a swirling breeze for most of the game) the Tiger faithful were still ecstatic to come away with their second win at home in succession and remain in the top 3 on the hart sports div 1 ladder. We must note that the public did their monies worth as each quarter went for more than 32 minutes (amazing for such a low scoring affair). The Daddow-Parry medal was awarded to Roos ruckman Jacob Simpson who was surprised to receive the award when his opponent Noosa’s Connor McDonald was clearly the best big man on the ground bagging four very important goals and taking mark of the year thus far. The young Noosa ruckman is improving in leaps and bounds each week with the tiger army extremely excited by what they see. Captain Aaron Laskey and sublime mover Jai Fitzpatrick continue to dominate their positions in this competition with brilliant four quarter efforts, whilst Harry Maher and Joel Lambourne in defence are having great starts to their 2018 campaign. A massive thank you to all our sponsors for their ongoing support in 2018 and hope to see all the tiger faithful back down at Weyba road this Saturday as we take on UNI of QLD in another must win encounter. ● Go Tigers Cheers, Pittsy
