A caring funeral home of
the future
Dandenong is now home to one of Australia’s most innovative and high-tech funeral homes. InvoCare opened its flagship home on the Princes Highway on Tuesday 17 April, marking the completion of a six-month, $3.4 million rebuild and refurbishment. Operating under the White Lady Funerals and Le Pine Funerals brands, the facility includes two arrangement rooms, a viewing room, a reflection/memorial lounge with an outdoor decked area, and a 170 seat (200 standing) non-denominational chapel - the largest capacity chapel in the South-East Melbourne area. The home also includes a state-of-the-art audio-visual system enabling families to web cast and record the service to share with family and friends interstate and overseas. Le Pine regional manager Ashley Crow said the stunning transformation was the result of in-depth customer research into the changing needs of the funeral industry. Mr Crow said research revealed families wanted a contemporary environment in which to farewell their loved ones. “Funerals have changed a lot in the last 30 to 40 years, to what is now a very celebratory and personalised event,“ he said. “People are now getting quite creative in the funeral services they want. Our staff have similar skills to event planners and provide what families are requesting as well as us sharing with them the various options that are available.“ “Funerals are changing so much. We have the ability to facilitate for a service up to 200 guests or hold a more intimate gathering.“ Regional manager for White Lady Funerals Tia Worrall agreed. “It was important to create an environment in which people feel calm and relaxed. They might come in emotionally stressed, so it is a comfort to be able to come into an environment where you can relax and have a team of people who can take you through the process.“ InvoCare’s research also revealed that families wanted access to the latest technology
“It’s important there are tears to assist the grieving process but it is also important to have laughter and celebration of a life well lived,“ Mr Crow said. The Reflection Lounge can comfortably hold up to 200 people, with sliding doors opening to an outdoor deck. The lounge is serviced by a full commercial kitchen. All food is served by waiting staff. “Some families want a less formal service, they want something more like a cocktail party. The Reflection Lounge gives us the option of people standing around informally,“ Mr Crow said. “We have deliberately designed the space so guests are served rather than food being placed on tables,“ added Ms Worrall. “We’ve held services where the family has requested that people be greeted at the door with a glass of champagne because that’s what

Pop wanted. We can do that in this beautiful space.“ Guests can also leave via the Reflection Lounge which offers direct access to the 55 space carpark. Mr Crow said Le Pine and White Lady had a diverse team of funeral staff across their Victorian network all experts in supporting families at their time of need. Mr Crow encourages people to wander in, have a look at the refurbished facility and meet the staff. “Long gone are the days when people had hesitation about walking into a funeral home. We have a wonderful team, just pop in and say hi as you would any other service in the community. “We are looking forward now to the public seeing what we have created.“ The home casts a welcoming glow at night.
Consider a pre-paid funeral for complete peace of mind
The Reflection Lounge provides a full catering capability. when paying tribute to their loved ones and connecting those who were unable to farewell the deceased in person. “So if you have relatives in England for instance we can live stream to those locations via web-casting. them. The 170-seat chapel has a cathedral-like roof and is flooded with natural light from a wall of glass. “The cathedral ceiling creates beautiful sound and the audio in here is amazing because of that cathedral ceiling,“ Ms Worrall
said. Real flowers, water features and comfortable soft furnishings add to the warmth of services. The importance of hospitality was another key finding from InvoCare’s research. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Planning a funeral can be stressful and costly for the loved ones of the deceased. That burden can be alleviated with a prepaid or pre-arranged funeral, which is planned and paid for by you whilst you are alive. The plan is entrusted into the care of the funeral director of your choice, to deliver upon when the time comes at no additional cost to your family. Guardian Plan, an Australian funeral plan provider, offers prepaid funerals through multiple funeral providers including Simplicity Funerals, Le Pine Funerals and White Lady Funerals. The great benefit of a prepaid funeral is that cost remains the same as the day you planned it. On average, a pre-paid funeral today costs $6,000. That cost will remain the same regardless of how long you live. For example, if you live another 27 years the cost of a funeral at that time would be estimatdandenong.starcommunity.com.au
ed at $14,000. However, as your funeral has been pre-paid at $6,000 that price is locked in and there is no more to pay. On the other hand, if you take out funeral insurance today and pay premiums for the same period (27 years) the cost would be $32,000. “A prepaid funeral makes it easier on your family by ensuring loved ones have a copy of your funeral plan,“ said a spokesperson from Guardian Plan. Funds are safely held with the Over Fifty Guardian Friendly Society, an APRA registered organisation, until they are needed. “By paying for your funeral in advance, you relieve your family of the funeral costs and the distress of making difficult decisions at an emotional time,” said the spokesperson. "When needed, your family can call your nominated funeral provider to help them begin the arrangements you have already or-
ganised and no payout or claim forms are required. "You make the decisions on what you would like for your funeral so it is planned the way you want." In general a pre-paid plan covers: Professional guidance for your family Preparation and care for the deceased Documentation Funeral arrangements including the type and style of funeral you want Transportation for the deceased Instalment plans are available and Guardian Plan offers a 30 day cooling off period. Bogut gives back “Never let anybody say that you cannot do something.” This was among the advice Basketball star Andrew Bogut shared with Doveton College students on Monday 23 April. He stopped by to officially open the school’s new outdoor play space, “our big back yard”. “If you put the time and the effort into anything ... you can do anything you want,” he said. “It doesn’t just come easy. You have to put in the time and hard work.” Bogut’s visit coincided with news breaking that he was ending his 13-season career playing in the US in the NBA and returning to Australia to play in the NBL with the Sydney Kings. He told the Journal that he wanted to give the kids something to aspire to. “It’s not an area that gets a lot of positive attention,” he said. He grew up in Eumemmerring and went to St John’s Regional College in Dandenong, and his dad went to Doveton Tech. Bogut has friends in Hallam and Dandenong and said he still spent a lot of time in the area. He told students to listen to their parents, teachers and principal, to do their homework and eat their vegies. “Treat the person next to you and the per-
son behind you the way you would want to be treated,” he said. “If you see one of your classmates that’s a little sad or down, maybe put your arm him and ask him if he’s doing ok.” He said his most important message for them was to enjoy being kids. “I would give anything I could to be your age again and just have no responsibilities,” he said. “This is the best time of your life, enjoy it.” College benefactor the Colman Foundation funded the “big back yard”. Founder Julius Colman organised Bogut’s visit. “We want to show them they can achieve,” he told the Journal. “I don’t know him. I got a number and called him out of the blue. “He said yes.” Mr Colman told the official opening: “Andrew is an example for you that you too can do anything that you want if you really try”. College principal Greg McMahon said the space would allow kids to actually be kids. “It’s a great opportunity for our little ones to have this space to run around in and get dirty,” he said. “We’re really proud of what’s happened here. “Seeing a local made good is just the inspiration they need.”

NEWS
IN BRIEF
Cuts to cause crisis Greater Dandenong is facing "a humanitarian crisis" and risks "another Apex Gang" unless the Federal Government scraps a planned welfare cut for refugees. Councillor Matthew Kirwan put up an urgent motion for advocacy against cuts to the Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) program at the Monday 23 April meeting. He said it provided about $247 a week, casework support and access to counselling to people waiting for their claim for asylum to be considered. Cr Kirwan said eligibility criteria changes would start from 1 May and that from 4 June, recipients assessed as being job ready would start exiting the program. "This action will leave many people destitute," he said. "People seeking asylum are already seeking emergency assistance in increasing numbers
from agencies and other charities throughout Australia. "Many of these are charities that receive no money from the government. "In Greater Dandenong, we have almost 2000 people seeking asylum in the community awaiting a decision. "The majority will be affected by these changes to the SRSS program. "Loss of income and case management support will be accentuated by the uncertainty of their status in Australia, language and cultural barriers, and the effects of torture and trauma. "It will lead to increased incidence of mental health issues. "Poverty and mental health issues will erode the social cohesion that Greater Dandenong Council has invested so much in achieving." Only Cr Tim Dark opposed the call to write to relevant ministers and MPs and to contact
other councils for support. He slammed "the scare tactics being portrayed around this table" and said the SRSS was "provided as a short-term means". "The best form of welfare is a job," he said. Cr Roz Blades said the council had a responsibility to advocate on behalf of its residents. "This council is facing a disaster of a third world nature right here in our very city," she said. "We've got a responsibility to look after these people. "They're going to lose everything." Cr Sean O'Reilly said the situation wasn't as easy as telling SRSS recipients to get a job, and they would be left with little option but to steal. "Through no fault of their own they haven't received justice," he said. "Potentially this change will create another Apex Gang."
School’s in for new primary in 2020 By Casey Neill Keysborough will have a new primary school by 2020. The 2018-'19 State Budget, to be revealed in full on Tuesday 1 May, will include $18.9 million to build the long-awaited facility. There'll also be $3.8 million for Lyndale Secondary College's ongoing upgrade and money to start planning an Endeavour Hills special school. Keysborough MP Martin Pakula announced the Keysborough South Primary School plan on Monday 23 April. "Our growing community in Keysborough South needs this new primary school," he said. "I've listened closely to what local parents have told me and this new primary school will help give local kids the classrooms and facilities they deserve." Keysborough South Action Group has been campaigning for the school for more than three years. Spokeswoman Nina Kelly welcomed the news. "This means that for those families with children in three-year-old kinder and younger, they will now have a local primary school which will encourage more active transport in the community," she said. "The campaign has been long and hard for pioneer families in the estate who will completely miss out after waiting 10-plus years for the primary school. "Our community now shifts focus to an additional secondary school for the wider Keysborough area." Greater Dandenong Council has also advocated for the facility. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the same day that the budget would also include money to start planning a special school in Endeavour Hills.
More trains, more often Trains will soon arrive at Dandenong Railway Station every 10 minutes. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan announced the move at the station on Friday 27 April. She said turn-up-and-go services every 10 minutes would be extended between Dandenong and the city line from 7pm to 10pm once every level crossing between Caulfield and Dandenong was removed. Ms Allan said a major construction blitz from 29 May to 17 June would complete that task. During the blitz, buses will replace trains on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. While at Dandenong, Ms Allan also announced $572 million in the 2018-'19 State Budget for power upgrades and modern signalling from the city to Cranbourne and Pakenham. She said this work would pave the way for the Cranbourne line duplication.

Sylvvia and Pablo with Grace and Laila, and Nina and Daniel with James and Alex, at the future Picture: ROB CAREW school site. 180158 "Building Endeavour Hills Special School will ensure we keep pace with the community's increasing population and gives families certainty and peace of mind," she said. On Thursday 26 April she announced the
cash boost for Lyndale's ongoing major upgrade. She said this latest money would build a creative arts wing and followed $13 million to revamped the school's performing arts, STEM and food technology facilities.

Greater Dandenong police are appealing for help to solve three deliberate fires set over two days. The first engulfed a tree in Burden Park, corner Springvale and Heatherton roads, Springvale South, about 1.25am on Sunday 22 April. Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Senka Markovic said the CFA attended and extinguished the fire. About 2.55am that morning, a firebug set a block of wood alight inside the garage of a home under construction in Stuart Street, Noble Park. The CFA attended and put out the blaze, which had spread to plasterboards. Sen Const Markovic said there was no further damage, no known injuries and no witnesses. She said CCTV from a neighbouring property captured two men with slim builds leaving the scene about the time of the fire. About 4.40pm on Monday 23 April, a witness saw a man bending down near bushes on a property in Cleeland Street, Dandenong. The man ran from the scene and flames took hold in the shrubbery. Sen Const Markovic said the house was vacant, awaiting demolition and had been gutted by fire just weeks ago. She said there was no evidence of accelerant involved in this fire. Anyone with information on these blazes should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"I see they lost conscription in Australia. Well I can't blame the boys for not coming although when one comes to look at the destruction of villages everywhere you go and how the poor people of France have been turned out homeless there is no doubt that every man is wanted , and I for one would not like to see Australia in the state this country is, and so we have to bear that in mind, that our dear ones in Australia are free from harm, and it was up to everyone who loved Australia to come and fight for it. If you could only see some parts of France, once fine towns, now just a plain for miles, not a house left only shell holes and mine craters."

A fountain which Dandenong Rotary Club intends presenting to the city is the first in a number of decorative features that Dandenong "needs". This is the opinion of Mr Charles McKeon, president of the Rotary Club and a man keen to see realistic beautification schemes for the city. "Dandenong is a city which has developed in haste commercially and from an industrial point of view," Mr McKeon told the Journal yesterday. "Unfortunately some of the finer and more aesthetic points of development have been overlooked in this rapid expansion. "We feel the fountain will be a great value to Dandenong," Mr McKeon said.

5 years ago 29 April 2013 Closing the health gap Ailing health in remote indigenous communities
has been a national concern. But on our doorsteps, an Aboriginal co-operative is trying to reverse a set of sick-looking statistics. No-smoking posters plastered next to the rainbow serpent and the galaxy dot painting murals are a sign of the times at the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative. The co-op is a support hub for a 4000-strong indigenous catchment extending over east and south-east Melbourne to Gippsland, with 1400 patients on its health clinic's books. Its smoking ban is one corrective step in the aim of "closing the gap" between indigenous Australians' health and the rest of the community. The latest statistics show that 45 per cent of Aboriginal Australians are daily smokers - double the national average.
Easter chocolates for all The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON
When Nipper and I and our mates served as altar boys during the Easter ceremonies at St Mary's Catholic Church in Dandenong, there was a wonderful old priest, Father Cerruti, who came by train from Rupertswood Seminary at Sunbury. Father Cerruti came on weekends, Christmas and Easter as an extra priest. He bought a shoe box filled with small crosses made from strips of the fronds of real palm leaves. We could never work out how they were folded to form such a perfect cross. But it was very special if you managed to get one, as unlike the bits of cypress they seemed to last forever. We tried to make them from leaves of the
palm trees that lined each side of Lonsdale Street, but were never successful. About all we managed were cut fingers. When we served at the Easter week ceremonies, Father Little gave each of us a large box of Hoadley's Violet Milk Chocolates at the completion on Easter Sunday. It was stiff luck if, like me, you had a Nipper because you got one box to share between the two of you. About mid-way between the Foster Street corner and the tennis court fence in McCrae Street, there was a wooden gate which accessed a gravel pathway. This pathway curved past the spot where
the new tennis pavilion would be built in 1934 and ran beneath a large Norfolk Pine, to meet up with a concrete path near the well-worn bluestone steps that led up to the door of the sacristy. The gate was a strange wooden construction about six feet high, half turnstile, half revolving door. At this time McCrae Street was a major stock route, as were Foster Street and the Princes Highway. The gate was there to keep stock out of the beautiful church grounds. We used this gate when coming from home at 88 McCrae Street, whenever the double wooden gates were locked. The double gates led into the back yard of the original presbytery and the old stables and the tennis court sheds, and were sometimes locked if a horse was left on the loose in the yard. We often got caught inside the turnstile gate when it jammed or came off its axis as we were not of sufficient size or strength to un-jamb or lift it.
When this happened we had to get down on our bellies and squeeze under like dogs, which left us very dusty or dirty, and not in the right frame of mind to be going to mass. Many times we got caught by mobs of cattle and sheep and the drover's covered wagons as they passed through Dandenong. They could be heading to the Dandenong stock yards or going to the Newmarket sale yards or to the other side of Melbourne. They could be from up north, or in times of drought or depression just using the long paddock along the side of the roads. We did not mind the woollies, but the cattle were scarier as back then many of the breeds had long sharp horns, especially the herefords. They would come past our house, at 88 McCrae Street, in mobs so big they filled wide wide road reserve from fence to fence. One they had passed, the grassed nature strips and gravel roadway and footpath looked like a ploughed and harrowed paddock.
Police drew out Kevin's winning ticket and popped in for the presentation, which included the ceremonial lighting of a traditional oil lamp and Sri Lankan food.
In February, Greater Dandenong Councillor Tim Dark successfully suggested the council write to all state MPs "strongly opposing any changes" to the act, labelling it an "attack on religion". On Wednesday 28 March, Legislative Council President Bruce Atkinson ordered that the bill be withdrawn because it conflicted with tax rules in the Constitution. Cr Dark shared the update with the Monday 9 April council meeting and said "hopefully we'll now see the end of that".

Bowel cancer battle
Boy, what a winner! A 10-year-old boy left Dandenong's Patterson Cheney Toyota with a new car. Kevin, from Greenvale, won first prize in the raffle at the Sri Lankan New Year event at Dandenong's Greaves Reserve on Sunday 8 April. He was "nervous and happy" when he col-
lected the Toyota Yaris Ascent on Monday 23 April with parents Mano and Idantha. "I'm giving it to my mum," Kevin said. The Sri Lankan German Technical Institute Old Boys' Association of Australia ran the event and raffle. They said everyone who bought a ticket was a winner because the money went to charity.
Dandenong Rotarians will do their bit to beat bowel cancer throughout May. They're offering discounted Bowelscan kits at Terry White Chemists in Dandenong Plaza, Dandenong Central Pharmacy on the corner of Walker and Langhorne streets and Chemist Warehouse Dandenong on Lonsdale Street. Participants post their completed kit for testing, following the directions included. Call Trevor Harding on 0409 797 730 for more information.
Charity tax bill binned Last December, The Reason Party Leader Fiona Patten proposed to amend the Charities Act in relation to taxing religious groups.
Shade for St Mary's Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced on Tuesday 24 April that St Mary's Cricket Club in Dandenong would receive $2739 to install a new shaded area for players and spectators. "Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent, yet largely preventable cancers affecting Victorians - that's why it's so important to be sun smart," she said.

March for ‘real Australia’ By Casey Neill The Afghan community joined in Dandenong’s Anzac Day march this year for the first time. They carried flags and wore traditional dress in the procession from the Dandenong RSL down Clow Street to the Pillars of Freedom on Wednesday 25 April. Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL Sub-Branch president John Wells said he was proud to see flags from around the world held high during the march. “This is not altogether the land of the original Anzacs anymore,” he said. But he acknowledged that even when Australian and New Zealand troops started the Anzac legend in Gallipoli during World War I, 103 years ago, people from around the world called Australia home. “You people are not just welcome, you’re part of the real Australia,” he said. “This Anzac Day reflects the current Dandenong, not just old Dandenong.” Afghan-Australian Civil Society Organisation co-founder Reza Andesha was one of two guest speakers. “Anzac Day reminds us that war is to be avoided, but when necessary we must stand up for our values and protect our land and people,” he said. He thanked the Australians who’d fought in Afghanistan and said their contribution would not be forgotten. Andy Bishop filled the other guest speaking spot after Commander Frederick Menzies, aged 94, broke his ankle the night before. Mr Bishop said he joined the army because he could get good wages. He was 16 years and three months old. He sailed out of Australia at age 17. Mr Wells described him as “a fair dinkum
Endeavour Hills man Graham Bull, who served with the British Forces. hero, a fair dinkum Anzac”. He said he didn’t rise through the ranks. “He was important only in the sense that he did the cutting edge stuff,” he said. “Andy carried a rifle and looked the enemy in the eye and ultimately paid a price for that.” Mr Bishop was shot twice during his five
years and eight months of service, “one in the lung and one in the thigh”. “I don’t have much more to say but I love youse all,” he said to end his speech. Pastor David Owen led the crowd in a prayer. “When a man gets up and talks about twice
being shot as if it’s a matter of fact, it touches me,” he said. He said veterans wrote a blank cheque for Australia for up to his or her life. The event followed a dawn service at the pillars and a Vietnamese service at the RSL earlier that day.

You’ll pay $71 more By Casey Neill The average Greater Dandenong ratepayer will pay about $71 extra next year, according to the council's draft 2018-'19 budget. Councillors voted to put the proposal out for public feedback for 28 days at their Monday 23 April meeting. They'll make a final decision at their Tuesday 12 June meeting. The headline project in the $58 million capital works program is the Springvale Civic Precinct. There's $18.5 million allocated to start construction, which is due for completion by December next year. The draft budget also includes $1 million to design the Keysborough South community hub, on top of $3 million already set aside for land. The Thomas P Carroll Reserve pavilion is pegged for a $2 million overhaul, the Dandenong Park makeover would continue with $1.5 million and Robert Booth Reserve would receive floodlighting in an $815,000 plan. The budget proposes $200,000 in CCTV for the Brady Road shopping precinct, $5.56 million in road resurfacing and reconstruction, and just over $1 million for new library resources.
Cr Matthew Kirwan also highlighted cash to continue Walker Street and Springvale Road beautification works, put solar panels on the Dandenong Civic Centre, build a cycle path on Hammond Road, and design an all-abilities playground. He welcomed $46,200 for a tribute to the Greater Dandenong Living Treasures and $22,200 towards a book celebrating the City of Greater Dandenong's 25th anniversary. Corporate services director Mick Jaensch said an increase in recycling costs added about $2.5 million to the overall council budget. Ratepayers will fork out an extra 16 per cent or $53 to recover the cost. The budget report said the council's recycling contract "has been immediately impacted by the National Sword Policy implemented by China's Customs on 1 January 2018, which aims to restrict the import of contaminated paper, cardboard and plastics". Engineering services director Julie Reid said there was no planned interruption to the council's household recycling service. "Our service is operating business as usual and we continue to encourage our residents to recycle," she said. The Local Government Minister determined that the rate rise for the 2018-'19 financial year for councils across the state would be
capped at the forecast rate of inflation of 2.25 per cent. The cap is on the total amount of rates that the council can collect. Each individual increase will depend on any change in property value since the previous valuation. Greater Dandenong property values increased about 25 per cent in past two years. Properties that rose by less than this figure would attract a lower rate increase, and those with a greater rise would have a higher rate increase. The increase for the median residential valued property will be 5.50 per cent, including the waste charge increase. That's $71.15 for the year, or $1.37 cents per week. The draft budget report said the council was confident it could continue to manage rate-capping this year, but it would become more difficult. "Particularly as the delivery of new facilities such as the Springvale Community Precinct add considerable costs to the council's operational budgets without the ability to offset this via increased rates," it said. "These projects ... also create an additional maintenance requirement going forward increasing operational costs into the future."
Contrast art on display A suburb-wide art exhibition will explore dark and light, evil and innocence. Odile takes inspiration from the sinister and seductive black swan in Tchaikovsky's classic Swan Lake, contrasted with the innocent white swan Odette. Each of the 11 artists involved in the multivenue display will explore ideas around good and evil and performance and identity. The exhibition is designed for visitors to explore through a self-guided walking tour. Odile will open at 2pm on Saturday 5 May and the works will be on display at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, Drum Theatre and Garnar Lane. The gallery will be open from 2pm to 5pm. Heritage Hill will host artwork from Kyoko Imazu, Hung Lin, Tarryn Gill and Kate Rhode from 2pm to 3.30pm. The Drum Theatre foyer will host artworks from Tarryn Gill from 2pm to 3.30pm. In Garnar Lane, artist Kyoko Imazu will speak about her artworks from 2pm to 3.30pm. Odile runs until Saturday 23 June. Damien sheds the kilos for a new life after booze ban By Casey Neill Damien Hunter is a shadow of the man he was a year ago - and couldn't be happier. The Endeavour Hills 28-year-old put himself on a 12-month alcohol ban on 15 May last year and followed up with gastric sleeve surgery on 28 August. Now he's 70 kilograms lighter and brimming with new-found confidence. But it's not all about him. The Dandenong motor mechanic is donating money he'd normally spend on alcohol to beyondblue and encouraging others to fundraise with him. "I had a bit of a wake-up call. A few friends committed suicide," he said. "I spent time seeing the after-affects with the families. "I was in a bad place as well." Mr Hunter struggled with obesity throughout his life and was at 173kg. "I used alcohol to deal with that," he said. "I used to drink and be the clown of the group. "Confidence-wise I'm heaps better off. "I've been out night-clubbing a few times sober. "I can have just as much fun. "Twelve months ago, if I wasn't drinking I wouldn't go anywhere." He's going to have a beer come the 12-month mark. "But the amount that I've achieved in
Damien Hunter adds beyondblue signage to his race car. the past 12 months, it's all because I gave up drinking," he said. "I don't want to go back to where I was."
It was three months into sobriety that Mr Hunter went to a weight loss clinic and asked about surgery.
"Before I knew it I was sitting on a hospital bed waiting for the operation," he said. The gastric sleeve took away 80 per cent of his stomach capacity. "You're pretty much training yourself to eat again," he said. "You've got to be on top of your nutrition. "You've got to be smart about what you eat." Mr Hunter said customers had asked his boss who the new worker was. "A lot of people don't recognise me," he said. "It's the best feeling." He has more energy, sleeps better and doesn't have the leg pain he was battling before dropping the weight. "Even in the race car I have more energy," he said. "I get out feeling good instead of feeling like I've run a marathon." Mr Hunter has been racing cars since he was 14 years old. He's added beyondblue stickers to his latest car ahead of his next race, at New South Wales' Wakefield Park Raceway. He hopes it will provide a last-minute boost to his fund-raiser and is offering sponsorship space on the car for donations to beyondblue. John Dowling is still hitting the gym at age 94. He's been a regular at Dandenong Oasis for more than 20 years and said he rarely missed a session. "I started off in the water then, once I retired, I joined the gym," he said. "I had lifted weights in the past and had a physical job so I realised I had to keep strong and active. "I come in three times a week and stick to my routine. "I did use the pool and sauna but feel the gym is more beneficial for me. "The pool is good to help with the aches and pains and the occasional stiffness." Mr Dowling doesn't take any medication puts his good health down to keeping active.
"I come to the gym three times a week, play bowls once or twice and darts on a Monday night," he said. "It keeps me busy. "I have also been told that I eat like a horse - good quality food and plenty of it. "My goals are to keep healthy, keep off the meds and be able to keep bowling. "I will keep coming to Oasis for as long as I can." Dandenong Oasis manager Trudy Micallef said John was a popular person around the centre and an outstanding example to others. "If anyone is looking to be inspired we just point them towards John," she said. "He is proof of how regular exercise can lead to better health and happiness, regardless of age."
Clear vision Customers who purchase glasses from Specsavers Endeavour Hills will be helping provide emergency relief, accommodation, food, clothes and counselling to locals in need through local charity, The Andrews Centre. The store has raised nearly $3,000 and has started a new campaign to raise even more. Pieta Daly is a local resident who knows first hand how much donations from organisations like Specsavers Endeavour Hills are appreciated. “The Andrews Centre has helped me and my family a lot over the years, including assisting with medical expenses for my daughter and providing funds for food when needed,“ Ms Daly said. “My daughter was born with a disability and the costs associated with medical treatment are huge, so the Andrews Centre has been a huge support.“ The Andrews Centre also provides a support network for people, giving them the opportunity to bond with others who might be going through a difficult time.
“Thanks to the many organised events The Andrews Centre holds including special day outings, Friday meal gatherings and the wonderful Christmas parties, we’ve also built friendships and a support network. These are just some of the services The Andrews Centre has provided me and my family with over the years that wouldn’t be possible without the support from donations from organisations like Specsavers Endeavour Hills,“ Ms Daly said. Specsavers Endeavour Hills co-owner Samantha Terry said a portion of the profits from every pair of glasses sold goes to help The Andrews Centre. “The team at The Andrews Centre do a fantastic job at supporting those in need in our community and we are proud to be contributing to the good work they do,“ Ms Daly said. Specsavers Endeavour Hills also supports The Fred Hollows Foundation, which focuses on treating and preventing blindness in Australia and Asia Pacific.

Bailey in a bright start By Hayley Wildes There is no doubt that the Dandenong Stingrays have a squad full of potential. There is one name that, if you’ve followed the Stingrays in recent years, will come to mind very quickly when you think about AFL potential. That name is Bailey Williams. Williams, a 198cm and 90kg key forward/ ruck, has started his final season of TAC Cup footy on a tear. He is taking over games, including a seven goal haul against the Western Jets in round four, with his otherworldly athleticism and ability to compete when the ball hits the ground. Stingrays coach Craig Black talked about what sets Williams apart from other big men. “I think Bailey’s athleticism is his key.” He said. “He’s 198cm, but moves like he’s 188cm - so he’s able to get the ground balls and you can kick it out in front of him. His vertical leap is pretty spectacular to watch.” With spades of athleticism, Williams’ focus in 2018 has been on another aspect of his game. “I just really wanted to step up my intensity from last year, obviously being a top-ager I really wanted to step up and make an impact early in the year and I feel like I’ve done that so far.” Williams said. That intensity was on show in a hard-fought
battle against AFL-listed player Braydon Preuss when the AFL Academy took on North Melbourne VFL earlier this month. As Academy’s #1 ruck, Williams took it right up to Preuss - a 206cm and 109kg ruckman. “That was awesome.” Williams said of that match-up. “It was another massive step up for me, obviously with the big bodies and Pruessy being a big guy, but I enjoyed the challenge.” Another challenge will come in June when Williams represents Victoria Country at the U18 National Championships. “Representing Victoria again is going to be massive. I think we’re going to be fairly strong and we’ll be ready to have a big impact on the Championships.” With Williams spending the majority of his 2017 TAC Cup campaign in the ruck, he has been able to showcase his versatility in 2018, flourishing as a key forward. “I love going forward. I’ve come from a forward background and last year to get a big taste of being a ruckman, it’s good to go back to what I have naturally done.” Williams said. What does the rest of the season hold for Williams and the ‘Rays? “Individually, I just want to keep improving, string a few good games together and I think our side has got the potential to go all the way this year, so we’ll see how we go.” Williams said. “I think our goal is to the win the cup for sure.”

It was a night of celebration and reflection of an incredible year of success for the Dandenong Cricket Club, with the reigning Victorian Premier Cricket champions enjoy their presentation evening on Saturday 21 April. The Shepley Oval powerhouse stunned the competition with its success this season, taking out both the one day and two day first XI premierships in two dominant displays. It was also confirmed on the night that president Michael Findlay will step down after almost 15 years of incredible service for the Panthers, and has been a driving force in the growth of cricket in Dandenong and in the south-east region. Findlay was the man behind the scenes that helped merge both the Men's and Women's clubs together into one, and leaves an enduring legacy at the club. From an award perspective, champion all-
rounder James Nanopoulos took out the Men's Club Champion after perhaps his finest season to date. Nanopoulos picked up 40 wickets in 21 games at an average of 16.63, and also contributed a handy 317 runs, including a half century against Northcote. For the Women, Chelsea Moscript took out the Club Champion after a terrific season. Moscript snared 20 wickets and made 122 runs for the Panthers this season. Other major award winners across the night included champion batsman Brett Forsyth, who took out the coveted Brendan McArdle medal after a stellar 825 run season that included a century and eight fities. Chargers overrun the Rays By Hayley Wildes There is no doubt that the top of the table TAC Cup clash between the Dandenong Stingrays and Oakleigh Chargers lived up to the billing. It was tough and exciting, resulting in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire at Warrawee Park on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Rays, they were unable to keep their unbeaten record intact as they were overrun in a dominant last quarter charge by Oakleigh. Dandenong got off to a flying start with the likes of Zac Foot and Corey Ellison running riot up forward. The two combined for three first quarter goals to have the Rays leading 4.4 (28) to 1.2 (8) at the first change. The Chargers came out firing in the second quarter and two early goals had Oakleigh just eight points adrift. Shortly after, Ellison kicked his second major to regain the ascendency and the Rays went on to kick two of the last three goals of the quarter to enter half-time with a 14-point lead, 7.6 (48) to 5.4 (34). The third quarter was an absolute arm wrestle as both teams battled to gain the momentum. Jake Frawley was at his dominant best - creating plenty of attacking forays for the Stingrays and taking the game on, whilst Luke McDonnell and Lachlan Young were crucial around the ground. The Stingrays had their chances to create a buffer in the third quarter, but will rue their missed opportunities on goal. Scoring 1.4 for the term meant the Chargers were able to stick right with the Rays as they scored two majors of their own. In the final term, the Chargers took total control of the momentum and sliced through the Rays defence. Matthew Day slammed home the first two majors of the term to give the Chargers a one-point lead at the 13-minute
mark. A little bit of Reid Nanscawen magic saw the Rays hit back not long after to regain the lead. But it wasn’t enough. A Charlie Whitehead goal evened the scores, before a match-winner from Lachlan Harry - who had been absolutely everywhere

all day - saw the Chargers hit the front with just minutes remaining. Some tough defence in the final stages earned the Chargers a hardfought one-goal win over the Stingrays, 11.6 (72) to 9.12 (66). was ultimately the difference in the game as the Chargers took their chances and the Rays didn’t. Jake Frawley battled valiantly all day and was best for the Stingrays. Lachlan McDonnell and Lachlan Young were also impressive, while Zac Foot and Corey Ellison (two goals each) were dangerous up forward.

Keysborough has continued its unbeaten start to the Southern Football League’s Division 2 season with a hard-fought win over East Brighton in Round 4. It was a tight match all day, but Matthew Carnelley (five goals) proved to be the matchwinner as the Burras claimed the 10.12 (72) to 10.6 (66) win. In Division 3 Hampton Park was dominant against South Yarra. Nathan Carver (seven goals) and Michael Henry (five goals) were too much for South Yarra as they ran away 25.20 (170) to 1.2 (8) winners. Meanwhile, Hallam may have kicked the only goal of the first term, but it was all Ashwood after that. A five-goal haul to Christopher Grove saw Ashwood claim the comprehensive 15.19 (109) to 4.6 (30) win. Jonathan Daly and Matthew
Studd (two goals) were best for Hallam. Endeavour Hills were too strong for Black Rock, claiming a 13.11 (89) to 3.3 (21) win. Jarrod Marolla (four goals) and Christopher Webber were dominant for the Falcons. Springvale Districts claimed a 26-point win over Heatherton, 8.15 (63) to 5.7 (37), as Thomas Wilkinson and Matthew Soutter-Smith led from the front in a dominant second half display. In Division 4, Lyndale fell agonisingly short of a win against Cerebus as the away team claimed a one-point win. Trevor Kumetaitis (five goals) and Jayden Denmead did all they could for the Pumas, but it wasn’t enough as Cerebus took the chocolates, 11.9 (75) to 11.8 (74). Dandenong and Sandown battled it out in what was a see-sawing affair. Shane Cosstick (five goals) and Nathan Isles were best for the Cobras, leading their team to a nail-biting 10.6 (66) to 9.6 (60) win over the Redlegs. Michael
Scott, Jayke Hopkins (two goals) and David Barrie (three goals) were best for Dandenong. Rowville got back on the Eastern Football League Division 1 winners list with a win over Montrose. After a tight first half, the Hawks put the foot down in the second half, booting 10 goals to one, running out 15.15 (105) to 5.9 (39) winners. Noble Park took on North Ringwood in what was an enthralling battle. Unfortunately for the Bulls, they fell by one-point, 12.13 (85) to 12.14 (86). Jake Gains and Cosimo Anagnostou were best for Noble Park in the heart-breaking loss. In Division 2 of the VAFA, St Johns were outclassed by a devastating Whitefriars team. A seven goal to none opening quarter set up the Whitefriars win, 23.13 (151) to 7.8 (50). Lewis Neate kicked nine goals for the Whitefriars, whilst Laurence Kazinoti was best for St Johns on a disappointing day.
