Mills want wood By Kath Gannaway A group of six sawmill operators, including three in Central Highlands, has accused the State Government of creating uncertainty and confusion in the industry through what they say is a major conflict of interest over the government's purchase of the Heyfield (Gippsland) sawmill. In an open letter to the Premier, the Group of Six (G6) - Fenning Timbers - Bairnsdale, Ryan & McNulty - Benalla, Dindi Sawmill Murrindindi, A G Brown - Noojee; Kelly's Timber - Wesburn and Powelltown Sawmills - Powelltown, get straight to the point. "We just want to know about the future of jobs, communities and the timber industry in regional Victoria" the letter (see page 6) starts. They accuse the government of shutting down extensions to existing timber supply agreements, ceasing tendering contracts for wood supply beyond 2021 and placing a halt on renewing some harvest and haulage contracts while "brazenly" providing Heyfield with extra timber at their expense. With the sole timber supplier, VicForests, also a State Government-owned company, in charge of the agreements, the G6 is drawing a fox in the hen-house analogy, saying they are being left to "stop the carnage". The Mail was redirected from the Premier's department to the Minister for Agriculture & Regional Development for a response to the Open Letter. The Agriculture Ministry emphasised that no contracts were 'torn up' but said optional extensions weren't extended due to impacts on supply due to fire and protected species. Dindi Sawmill owner Sue McKinnell from Healesville said however the impact on the smaller sawmills was a direct consequence of the Heyfield situation. "The government bought the sawmill to save community jobs and the timber industry and in doing so has hung out six others," she said. "Dindi had a licence to 2026 and in September last year VicForests came to us and to five other mills and said they were not going to honour the extensions." "Ours was cut back to 2020, some others have until 2021." Ms McKinnell said Dindi Mill employs 17 people whose families depend on them and who want certainty.
Powelltown Sawmill owner Harold Fox (right) with sawmill manager Steven Bedggood. 180346 "After June 2020 we will have to close the doors and walk away; after $20million investment over the past nine years, we are just going to have to walk away." Harold Fox, owner of Powelltown Sawmill, said timber communities and workers need security. "We want to know we still have a future. Workers need to have that bit of security that you have with the long-term licencing. "That's all we're asking the government for," he said. Powelltown employs 35 people, and as with Dindi, many of them are second and third generation workers in the industry. "You have people in the mills and working in the bush who have bought equipment and

you need to plan for the future, whether that's a declining future, you just need to be able to plan for the potential future." He said the industry had been ramping down from about 180 sawmills to around a dozen small sawmills as the government has bought mills out over the years. "We're in a position now to keep us all sustainable and keep the town viable," he said. "We're sawmillers and we just want to know there's a bit of a future for us, and for our customers." While both Ms McKinnell and Mr Fox say they are happy for Heyfield, they are equally adamant that it can't be at the expense of other mills. "They were advised not to do it (buy Hey-
field), to let them stand on their own two feet and instead they have hung out six mills to save one," Ms McKinnell said. In response to the 'Open Letter' a government spokesperson said the government supports a strong and viable forest and forest products industry and is committed to creating jobs and promoting investment. "We're investing in the long term future of Victoria's forest industry by diversifying and complementing the supply from native forestry," he said, adding that they are continuing to work with the industry and other stakeholders to a plan for increased plantation supply. On the accusation by the G6 of a conflict of interest, there was no response.

Honouring their service By Kath Gannaway Thousands of people saw the sun rise on Anzac Day commemorations across the Yarra Valley on Wednesday, 25 April. The trend continued of ever-increasing numbers at dawn services in Yarra Junction, Healesville and Millgrove. Just a few hours later, equally well-attended commemorative marches honoured generations of men and woman who served, and who are serving, in war. The main streets of Marysville, Healesville, Warburton, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction were lined with people showing their appreciation for the sacrifices made. Veterans proudly wore their medals, and others wore, with pride, the medals of family members who served their country in the fields of war around the world. The Seville and Wandin communities paid their respects at the Wandin Rotary Club service at the Wandin Yallock Memorial. Community, emergency and sporting groups, along with students from almost every local school played a role in the honouring of local men and women who left, and who still leave, their small communities for military operations at home and abroad. Worawa in control By Kath Gannaway The lifting of a first mortgage held by the State Government over the Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville has returned full control of the property to the school. Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Natalie Hutchins joined executive director and principal, Dr Lois Peeler AM, and some of the College's students and teachers in April to make the announcement. Worawa Aboriginal College purchased the site known as Barak Park in 1985 and is now in its 35th year of operation.
The Board of Worawa Aboriginal College had requested removal of the mortgage from the Worawa College land title. "This mortgage was placed on the College property in 1998 as a condition of a grant of $362,000 from Aboriginal Affairs Victoria for the construction of the Worawa sports complex of football oval, basketball court and change rooms," Ms Peeler said. She said the sports complex is well used. "The College has two football teams, two basketball teams and three netball teams. Each year the College hosts a Reconciliation Sports Carnival with participation of 15 schools from
the region and across Melbourne." A spokesperson for Aboriginal Affairs said with the lifting of the first mortgage, Worawa Aboriginal College now has full control of its assets and the economic autonomy to grow and plan for its future and continue its contributions to the Healesville community. "Giving Aboriginal organisations like Worawa Aboriginal College their land titles allows them to control and plan for their own future," Ms Hutchins said. "This goes to the heart of self-determination."

Appeal for Witnesses
By Kath Gannaway Cat Walker got her first violin when she was three, but there was another violin already in her life - her great-grandfather's red violin. At the Healesville Dawn Service on Anzac Day, Cat, now 28 and an equine adviser in the Yarra Valley, told the remarkable story of Staff Sergeant Charles Alfred Bender and his red violin. In her soft voice, and as she played the beautiful Ashokan Farewell, she captured the imagination and hearts of the crowd. The legendary violin, the only physical connection to her great-grandfather, was always there, in her parents' wardrobe, but significantly damaged. In year 11, when she says she was getting serious about further study on violin, she had it restored to complete Year 12. Sgt Bender joined the 8th Australian Field Ambulance in July 1917 after working in military hospitals in Lemnos, Abbassia, Brighton and Abbeville. He also joined the unit's musical troupe, the Nightbirds, who performed many concerts during their travels in France. "The travels of my great-grandfather's red violin are the stuff of family legend," she said. "We've all heard about the time he left the violin in a trough in France when his field ambulance unit was called to the front line." Cat's research revealed that someone, whether it was Sgt Bender, or another, made a special trip back to get the hidden instruments. "What I never wondered until now, was who he played his beloved violin for. Who heard the same voice I hear when I play 'Alfie'? Who found solace or joy? Who forgot where they were while they danced, just for a moment? "So, I went looking," she said. She found an official mention of items belonging to the concert troupe being dumped near Vauchelles in April 1918, weeks before Alfred was hospitalised due to gas exposure while treating and evacuating others on the 25th of April. "Maybe he collected his precious violin on his way back to his unit? Who knows ...!
IN BRIEF
Police are appealing for witnesses in relation to a road rage incident that occurred on Warburton Highway and involved an alleged assault and high speed driving. On Saturday 21 April, between 2am and 4am four vehicles were involved in a road rage incident that took place between Launching Place and Wesburn on the Warburton highway. The incident involved a Brown Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive, a white Nissan Navara ute, a gold colours Commodore Sedan and a blue Holden Commodore Station Wagon. Stronger penalties for drink and drug driving are now in place. From Monday, 30 April, first-time drink drivers who record a blood alcohol reading between .05 and .069 will lose their licences for a minimum of three months. All drink drivers will now face mandatory alcohol interlocks fitted to their vehicles for a minimum of six months. Licence suspensions for drivers detected with illicit substances in their system will also increase from three to six months and from six to 12 months for repeat offenders. From 30 April, the following changes will come into place: - All drink drivers (including first time offenders) recording a BAC of 0.05 and over will lose their licences for a minimum of three months. - All drink drivers will face mandatory interlock conditions for a minimum of six months. - All drink and drug drivers will be required to participate in a behaviour change program. - Victorian drivers convicted of drink or drug driving interstate will be subject to Victorian drink-driving penalties.
but when I play Alfred's violin today, I will play for those who did not hear him play, those the Field Ambulances and other medical units could not save; those we can remember both in silence and in music."

Let’s get hi-tech on roads The state of
affairs Cindy McLeish MP Member for Eildon Just as technology is making our cars safer, so too can technology help make our roads safer. One way technology is helping to maintain safety and keep the traffic flowing is through the use of electronic variable speed signs.
This technology is being used more frequently on our freeways and there is further potential for it to be used on many other types of roads. Of course, variable speed limits have existed for some time now with 40km/h speed limits enforced at all schools during pickup and dropoff times. These speed limits are proven to save lives and no one can deny the effectiveness of this strategy. Electronic signage further enhances this strategy by making sure drivers are visually alerted to the change in conditions. Sadly, these signs have not been rolled out to all our schools such as Woori Yallock and Wesburn Primary Schools in our region. I recently joined both school communities to announce that an elected Liberal Nation-
als Government would fund the installation of these signs because parents should be able to send their kids to school and have the confidence that they will arrive there safely. Over the last four years the Andrews Labor Government has refused to keep local students safe instead arguing that traffic counts on the Warburton Highway and Healesville-KooWeeRup Road do not fall within VicRoads' policy governing school zones. This is a ridiculous policy that does not take into account the constant dangers that morning fog, heavy trucks, sweeping bends and steep gradients pose to the safety of pedestrians and motorists. Road rules should be based on common sense and firsthand knowledge of the conditions on our roads.

Too many road rules have been designed by bureaucrats, and whilst some of their ideas might be good on paper, in the real world they can create more problems than they fix. That's why the Liberal Nationals Coalition is listening to a range of issues including the use of red lights and variable speed signs on freeways, speed limits through roadworks and better education for rural learner drivers. We also want your ideas for rules that should be changed, or new rules that you think should be introduced. We'll announce our policies on these issues, once we've taken your feedback on board. Plans for future By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council released its 2018-19 draft budget on Friday, 27 April with a mix of good news for improved infrastructure and services, and bad news in the form of a predicted increase in rates and the waste charge. The Council adopted the budget in principle at its April 24 meeting, along with its 201819 to 2021-22 Strategic Resource Plan and its 2018-19 to 2027-28 Long Term Financial Plan. The draft budget and proposed plans are open for community comment until Thursday, 24 May. Rates will increase by an average of 2.25% in line with State Government rules and the predicted waste charge is a 15% increase, or roughly $31 per household. The Council has identified replacements and upgrades of pavilions, playspaces and cultural centres, drains, roads, footpaths and trails as the 'big ticket' items in the budget at a cost of $39.49 million. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the budget had been developed with the community's needs in mind. "Much of this budget has been about planning for the future," he said. "We want to refresh our ageing infrastructure through asset renewal works, and replace community facilities that are out-dated. He said within the capital works program $6.43 million has been allocated to parks, open space and streetscapes. The total capital works program amounts to $64.29 million, including $18.07 million worth of projects carried forward from 2017-
18. $51.75 million will go to asset renewals, upgrades and expansions and $12.54 million to new projects. The Civic Centre Redevelopment in Lilydale will receive $1.35m and is among a number of proposed spends across the Yarra Valley including $1.44m on the Macintyre lane road pavement rehabilitation, toilet block improvements at Seville and Melba Park in Lilydale $650,000, pavement rehabilitation at Toolangi $569,000, construction of Queens park Playspace $500,000, Healesville Belonging Place feasibility and design $388,000, the River Circuit Trail at yarra Glen $316,000, Black Diamond MountainBike Trail at Powelltown $60,000 and Wesburn Station shelter and water station on the Warburton Trail $35,000. Cr Cox said a major investment in roads amounting to $16.44 million was included in the budget. "Many projects will benefit from the $1.6 million received from the Federal Government for the completion of much-needed Roads to Recovery projects," he said. China's restrictions on importation of certain recycled materials had put significant cost pressures on local councils with Yarra Ranges Council now having to pay to have recycling materials processed. Copies of the documents are available online for community comment at yarraranges. vic.gov.au . Submissions can be made online or in writing to PO Box 105, Lilydale, 3140. Details about how to lodge a submission are available on Council's website at www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay , or phone 1300 368 333.
Dani Quinsee with her horse ''Mr Radical''. 180220 Picture: Rob Carew.
Dani is barreling along By Kath Gannaway A life-long association with, and love of horses, will see Dani Quinsee heading to America in July to compete in the National Barrel Horse Association World Finals. The 27-year-old who has been an instructor at the Wandin Riding Academy for four years qualified in 2017 for a place on the international stage. Dani had a world of experience behind her by the time she decided to try barrel racing. Coming from a 'horse family' - her parents and grandparents all rode - she got her first horse when she was just 18 months old. Competing at pony club and agricultural shows developed into a love for jumping, and ultimately barrel racing. With her horse Harley, Dani has competed
all around Victoria and New South Wales, including at Sydney Equitana and Melbourne International Rodeo and has represented Australian Rodeo both at home and overseas. Competing in the NBHA World Finals in Perry, Georgia, will be another highlight in an already stellar career in equine sport. Sadly, she won't be able to take Harley with her which means hiring horses in America. On Saturday, 5 May, at the Wandin Hall Dani is holding a country-themed fundraiser with live music by ShortNote, American-style street food, a silent auction, lots of games and load of prizes. Tickets can be purchased at bit.ly/DaniFundraiser. There is also a go-fund-me page gofundme.com/dani-quinsee-nbha-worldfinals . Dani can be contacted on 0412 521 791.

OPINION
An open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews: we just want to know about the future of jobs, communities and the timber industry in regional Victoria. When your Government became an owner of the Heyfield mill to protect "local jobs, and the future of the community", we were relieved. Your $50 million plus investment in this struggling mill saved jobs, provided certainty of timber supplies and sure-footed families whose livelihoods depend on timber milling, a chance to plan for their futures. This time of optimism, however, quickly turned sour when it became clear this brighter future was not for all milling operations and the families that they support - just one ... Heyfield. Soon after the deal was done, your Government owned and controlled VicForests shut down extensions to our timber supply agreements, ceased tendering contracts for wood supply beyond 2021, placed a halt on renewing some harvest and haulage contracts, and continued to brazenly provide Heyfield with extra timber, when other mills were not. In less than six months, your Government, through these actions, has created a wave of uncertainty and confusion, which has swept away investment and optimism and replaced it with the threat of destroying hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs, forcing business closures and hurting regional communities, which is the very same crisis, but on a much bigger scale, you sought to avoid when you purchased Heyfield in the first place. Don't get us wrong.
We're happy for the Heyfield folks. We'd be wrapped if we were part of the special deals, some adjustment support and the advantages they are getting. On behalf of our sawmill clients, their 200 employees and 700 jobs down the line, which they support, we want to know what does our future hold and the futures of communities that depend on our timber mills? What's wrong with the jobs we make possible across the many towns that rely upon our economic activity? What do we tell the people of Benalla, Murrindindi, Yea, Yarra Glen, Healesville, Noojee, Neerim, Moe, Pakenham, Drouin, Narbethong, Mount Evelyn, Wesburn, Warburton, Bruthen, Lakes Entrance, Powelltown, Bairnsdale, Alexandra, Sarsfield and Shepparton? Do these communities, families and individuals, which our milling operations support, count for less than those linked to Heyfield? Are our businesses and the investments we have made somehow less worthy of taxpayer support? Sadly, we are left to toil into increased headwinds, with diminishing timber supply, no financial support or balance-sheet help from the taxpayer, and a sense that no-one is interested in the wellbeing of our business or their families and communities that depend upon our mills. From the Group of Six (G6): Fenning Timbers of Bairnsdale; Ryan and McNulty of Benalla; Dindi Sawmill of Murrindindi; A.G Brown Sawmill of Drouin West; Kelly's Timber of Wesburn; Powelltown Sawmills of Powelltown.
In response to John Whiteoak's letter, ''Me too', frustrated angry' ('Mail', 17 April), I laughed when reading replies to my letter; the comments were not relevant to my 'bureaucratic' issues. It's a shame that the replies were not offering constructive discussion regarding the issues faced in our area. Instead, there was criticism of me and my views. I personally don't care, as I am quite thick skinned, though, I believe finger-pointing at myself and Lynette Ward does not solve anything and really isn't productive. I would expect this sort of behavior on social media. Also, politics and scare-mongering are not relevant to the discussion regarding our environment. If the bureaucrats are making poor decisions with limited community input, it doesn't
Keep it safe The CFA is urging Victorian drivers to think about safety first when they are out on the roads as Road Safety Week commences. The CFA is attending a record number of motor vehicle accidents as part of their core service to protect Victorians. CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said that in 2018 to date, 10 per cent of all CFA callouts have been to attend road accidents. The number of road accidents we attend by the CFA has risen from 3,291 in 2009 to 5,303 in 2017, a 62 per cent rise. He said CFA proudly supports the 'Shine A Light on Road Safety' campaign from Road Trauma Support Services and urged people to view the video the CFA has created for the campaign. https://youtu.be/4FjN-MVLfUE

matter which side of politics they are on, they are still poor decisions. And there is the financial cost of these decisions. All governments are very quick to spend the taxpayer dollars and tend to forget; they are supposed to be working on our behalf and not to feel good about themselves! Now, if you're really interested in what a community thinks, drive all the way to Powelltown along Little Yarra Road and read the signs displayed on fences and trees. Clarification to the letter In the Tuesday 17 April, 2018, edition, the 'Mail' incorrectly attributed the honorific Professor to the letter from John Whiteoak. The letter - ''Me too', frustrated, angry' was not written from a position related to Mr Whiteoak's academic work. Rather, from his perspective as a concerned citizen. Yarn-a-Thon now has wings
Health cuts questioned By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council will write to the Chair of Eastern Health requesting an urgent meeting to discuss resourcing cuts to services at Healesville Hospital. At the council meeting on 24 April, Cr Fiona McAllister also called for the meeting to include the CEO of Eastern Health and for a letter to go to local members of parliament and the Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy. The purpose of the meeting would be to call for the reinstatement of resourcing levels and service provision at Healesville Hospital where the motion stated recent decisions to not replace staff had resulted in residents not being able to locally access services including paediatric services and speech therapists. The Mail reported in March of concerns that services were being cut and of a staff freeze at Healesville and Yarra Junction. Eastern Health rejected the claims saying systems were in place to ensure clients were seen in order of clinical urgency and that they were currently recruiting to provide more timely care. Cr McAllister said while the community was grateful for the new hospital facilities, it was

just a building. "The essential thing is the services provided out of that hospital," she said. "There has been increasing volume of community concerns about the services that are or are not provided out of that hospital, the long waiting times for critical services and the accessibility of services for all members of the community." She said a story that was indicative of what has been happening related to a mother with three year old child with developmental delays in speech who was told by Eastern Health that it would be six months before she could see a speech pathologist. "That may not sound long, but if you have a three year old where every week or month that passes can have ongoing effect, that's too long," she said. She said the Council was committed to working with Eastern health to provide services and that it was critical that as a council they made sure people could access services. "What I'm asking tonight is that council advocates on behalf of the community to find out what is going on, and act to ensure there are no long waits."
It's no coincidence that the kaleidoscope of butterflies fluttering around a growing number of light poles in Healesville's main street are in the colours of beyondblue. Crumbz Craft have chosen the mental health support organisation as their annual charity for 2018 and will be raising funds and awareness for mental health throughout May with a month-long sponsored Yarn-a-Thon starting on 1 May. The butterfly is the symbol on beyondblue's logo and the 286 butterflies crocheted by volunteers are attracting just the sort of attention that Crumbz owner Kay Trembath was hoping for. "We are all affected by mental health issues, whether it be our own, a family member, friend or someone in our community," she said. "One in four Australians will experience anxiety at some stage in their life, so given these statistics, we need to learn how to manage our mental health effectively." Kay said research shows that knitting and all forms of crafting can have a positive effect on mental health making it a natural fit for this year's Yarn-a-Thon. Knitters, crocheters, basket weavers and sewers, in fact anyone who crafts with yarn, is encouraged to get involved by making yarnbased items and getting sponsorship. The event will wrap up with a 24-hour overnight, non-stop yarn event at Crumbs Craft shop starting at midday on Saturday, 26 May and concluding at midday on the 27th. Crafters from further afield can host their own overnight event with their craft groups

Avengers: Infinity War is the exciting but severely uneven 10-year culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Heroes from all across the MCU must unite to prevent Thanos (Josh Brolin), a powerful megalomaniac, from acquiring the Infinity Stones. If Thanos gains all six of these potent artefacts, he will gain god-like power over all of existence. Despite having ostensibly more than sixty main characters, Infinity War's heroes are all brimming with personality and well-balanced within the narrative, and the enormous cast has great chemistry. The film is visually diverse and vibrant, the driving conflict is very clearly-established and the plot moves at a steady pace. However, the frequent jokes are laboured, and many of the individual skirmishes lack impact - it's hard to maintain tension when the

It's no co-incidence that the Warburton Film Festival is held in mid-winter - this year from 15 to 17 June. Yes, it's cold in winter in Warburton, but it's a town that celebrates the season with a fantastic three-day feast of film that after more than three decades continues to attract filmbuffs from near and far to enjoy Australian and international films in the cosy Mecca Theatre. There's really no reason to even venture outdoors if you choose not to - just pack the scarf and gloves and make the most of the opportunity to relax and enjoy film after film. Or, pick and choose your films and step out in between for a brisk stroll along the river walks, check out the local shops, or chill out at one of the many great cafes and restaurants. Hosted by the Yarra Ranges Film Society, the 2018 program comprises a wide diversity of genres with eight films including drama, documentary, comedy, and science fiction from six different countries. All the films were released in the last three years and were selected not only for their excellent qualities but also because of their limited release in Australian cinemas. One session this year is devoted entirely to short films where the the winners of the four sections of the festival's Show Us Your Shorts competition will be screened, along with an international short film. The festival is a marathon celebration of film and film-lovers including the Official Grand Opening with finger food and wine on the Friday night, and the Festival Dinner on Saturday evening. This year's program starts with the documentary 'Mountain' in which Jennifer Peedom explores mankind's fascination with mountains. Featuring a stunningly beautiful combination of breathtaking cinematography and music by Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the session will include a discussion with producer Jo-Anne McGowan. Visit the website www.warburtonfilmfestival.com.au for full program details. Book online, phone 5966 4500 or email uyac@yarraranges.vic.gov.au .
villain has nebulous, reality-bending powers yet is weirdly reserved about using them. Thanos, played with gruff nobility and a degree of pathos by Brolin, stands as a peculiar case of an antagonist with very strong practical motivation but scant personal motivation. It's abundantly clear he seeks the Stones, with which to massacre the universe, but we gain little sense of how this quest benefits him as an individual. Avengers: Infinity War is a poignant, character-driven superhero epic full of great elements strung together poorly or not fully-realised. - Seth Lukas Hynes

MOTHER'S DAY
Many gift ideas for mum
Sam and Helen of Sanctuary House.
Sanctuary for the mums Spoil mum this Mother's Day and celebrate at local Yarra Valley icon, Sanctuary House. With 17 years in the business under their belts, resort owners Sam and Helen Halim know a thing or two about hospitality and encourage families to bring their mum's along to be spoiled. A two-course Mother's Day lunch will be served from 12 noon, and all mums will receive a complimentary glass of bubbly. "But why stop there? Why not hold your next special function at Sanctuary House Restaurant?" Sam said. "You will be assured of the warmest of welcomes; the food is second to none and you will receive the best service at all times. "The beautiful restaurant was once described by an Age newspaper reporter as a 'banquet hall'. You really have to see it to appreciate it. Vegetarians, gluten-free and dia-
betic diets all catered for." Sam said that group bookings are welcomed at any time and encouraged people to book their special function now. "Any time is a good time!" he said. "Overnight stays at Sanctuary House range from standard three and a half star rooms to four star deluxe and super deluxe with fourposter beds and spas. All guest rooms come with free Foxtel and Wifi. GORGEOUS FORMER GUEST HOUSE HERE is a rare opportunity to purchase a well looked after heritage listed home, formerly known as one of ‘Thek’s Guest Houses’. Built in the early 1900s, this home has had many updates over the years including re-stumping, new plumbing, new wiring, connected to mains gas and has been reroofed. This property is now offering modern living while still keeping that all-important character and charm. The large country style kitchen offers a Bosch dishwasher and oven with a gas cooktop. As well there is a slow combustion stove in the kitchen. This house is as warm as toast in winter with two wood heaters and if you are feeling lazy a reverse cycle split-system airconditioner. Other features include beautiful polished hardwood floors, picture rails, large windows that look out at the established cottage garden and an original claw foot bath that has been lovingly restored. There are three large bedrooms, all with built-in robes with ample storage, the master
offering a walk-through robe to the ensuite which has a large double shower and contains a French laundry. There is an office (this would also make a perfect nursery) which has French doors that open onto a back deck. A perfect place to sit and have a cup of tea, read a book and let the world go by. For those that love to garden, outside is a beautiful and useable, flat corner block of approximately 1290 square metres with established gardens, there is a well established vegetable garden with a variety of fruit trees. Three lemons, a blood orange, tangelo and a fig to name but a few. Then the practical things, a double garage, various garden sheds and ample parking space and good fencing for children and pets. Located in a great spot, the Warburton Trail is close by and only metres walk to public transport, and just a short drive to Yarra Junction’s schools and amenities, and seven minutes' drive to Warburton. You really can’t ask for a more familyfriendly location! For more information SMS 2736WARB to 0488 824 379. ●

The pride of the league By Cameron Hutchison Round 2 was played in beautiful conditions for footy and netball. Olinda ferny Creek officially unfurled their Premiership flags from 2017 while Yarra Glen hosted the fifth Pride Cup for the Yarra Valley. Some surprise results and some good games were witnessed by supporters and the Yarra Valley Community. The winners in senior football: Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey-Tecoma, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Gembrook-Cockatoo, Seville, Yea and Yarra Glen. A Grade netball winners: Warburton-Millgrove, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Mount Evelyn, Seville, Yea, Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen. Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 19.21.135 d Warburton Millgrove 8.13.61 Healesville opened their account at the expense of Warburton by a solid margin of 74 points. Healesville got the jump in the first, kicking seven goals to two and the lead was a handy 27 points, even though the scoring shoots were rather even. In the second, it was Healesville's turn to be wasteful in front of goal 3.7 to 1.2 but the margin was still now 50 points and it was going to be tough for Warburton to peg that back. The third quarter was a better contest but Healesville still managed to increase their lead to 63 points. Healesville again peppered the goals in the last kicking 4.7 to 3.2; and although he margin was convincing, if Healesville can straighten up in front of goals their winning margins could be huge this year. Healesville Best: L. Daly, N. Mende, R. Woodford (6 goals), A. Fraraccio, D. Plozza (2 goals), J. Savage (3 goals) Warburton-Millgrove Best: N. Dodd, B. Clinch, D. Bedggood, T. Marr (1 goal), T. McKail (2 goals), L. Barnard (1 goal) Olinda Ferny Creek 27.17.179 d Belgrave 8.5.53 Olinda unfurled their 2017 Flag and welcomed Belgrave back in a big way. They got off to an absolute blinder, kicking 10 to 1 in the first and the scene was set. The second quarter evened up with both sides kicking three goals but the lead was 60 points at half-time. Olinda got back on the job in the third, with a fivegoal-to-two third quarter. They finished off the game the way they started and peppered the goals in the last with 9.6 to 2.2 to remind the rest of the competition that they are the reigning premiers. Olinda had 14 goal-kickers, which is going to be a problem for other teams this year. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: D. Fitzgerald (1 goal), M. Hottes (2 goals), L. Hill, M. Wright (1 goal), R. Cottam-Starkey (2 goals), D. Troutman (1 goal) Belgrave Best: P. Gough (3 goals), M. O'Callaghan (1 goal), M. Johnson (3 goals), N. Somervaille, T. Stubley, N. Schill Upwey-Tecoma 13.5.83 d Woori Yallock 10.14.74 The battle of the Tigers was a close contest all day. Woori Yallock held a slim lead in the first, but wayward kicking with seven scoring shots to two gave them a slim lead of five points at quarter-time. Both sides finally got their game going in the second, with Woori kicking five goals to Upwey's four, while Woori had extended their lead to 13 points at half-time. Woori Yallock looked like they had most of the play, but Upwey came out in the third and shot to the lead, kicking 5 goals to 1 and Upwey were heading into the last with a 9-point lead. The game seesawed in the last with both kicking 3 goals. Woori Yallock's failure to convert in front of goal is what got them in the end. Upwey-Tecoma Best: J. Von Hesse (1 goal), L. Hughes, K. O'Brien (1 goal), D. Waters (4 goals), B. Oates, S. Dawson (2 goals) Woori Yallock Best: R. Allen, K. Thompson, J. Williams, J. Matthews (1 goal), T. Anderson, B. Arnold. Wandin 20.16.136 d Monbulk 10.10.70 Wandin continued their winning way getting a convincing win over Monbulk. Wandin got the break in the first with five goals to two, but it was certainly not out of Monbulk's reach. 20 MAIL | Tuesday, 1 May, 2018
Olinda''s Peri Stewart shoots for goal. 180333
Pride on the line as Yarra Glen grabs momentum. 180333 Wandin maintained the pressure in the second, kicking four goals to Monbulk's three and the lead at the main break was 27 points. Wandin flicked the switch in the third and piled on nine goals to one to have a commanding lead of 78 points. Monbulk outscored Wandin in the last with four goals to two, but the damage was already done. Wandin Best: R. Heasley, R. Ross (3 goals), S. Wettenhall (4 goals), T. Hinds, D. Barton (2 goals), T. Merlino (1 goal) Monbulk Best: S. Williams (1 goal), P. Barge, B. Hicken, J. Major, J. Rak (1 goal), H. Finlay (4 goals) Mt Evelyn 9.8.62 d Emerald 8.9.57 Under lights on Saturday night, in an Anzac memorial match, Mount Evelyn had a come from behind win to get their season started. Emerald started well kicking four goals to one in the first to hold an 18-point lead a quarter time. Mount Evelyn closed the gap in the second, kicking four goals to two and reduced the margin to seven points. A tight third quarter saw the lead change in Mount Evelyn's favour by one point at the last change. Emerald had four scoring shots to Mount Evelyn's three in the last, but they could only kick one major to Mount Evelyn's two, which wasn't enough to avoid a loss. Mt Evelyn Best: L. Francis, T. Scopel, C. Urquhart, B. Lord (1 goal), T. Hallett-Tauali'I (1 goal, A. Chalkley (1 goal) Emerald Best: C. Thomsen, P. White (1 goal), S. Kelleher, Michael. Dompietro, Mathew. Dompietro, M. Stephens Division 2 Seniors Football Gembrook-Cockatoo 11.10.76 d Yarra Junction 10.14.74 In the closest game for the Round Gembrook got home by only two points. Gembrook held Yarra Junction goalless in the first and had a lead of 13 points at quarter time in what was a scrappy quarter of footy by both sides. As they began to settle in the second, Yarra junction swung into gear five goals to two to arrest back the lead by eight points at half-time. Gembrook regrouped and kicked seven goals
to two in the third, and turned it around to lead by 21 points at three-quarter time. Gembrook got a huge scare in the last as they could not manage to score a major while Yarra Junction were on the hunt and kicked 3.3 to finally fall two points shy at the final siren. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: M. Firrito, T. Lockyer (4 goals), R. Wilson, L. Scott, M. Kenny (4 goals), R. De Reus (2 goals) Yarra Junction Best: J. Bombinski (3 goals), T. Fennell, R. Bombinski (3 goals), T. Boxell (2 goals), B. Clark Seville 22.28.160 d Powelltown 4.0.24 Seville sits third on the ladder after one of the biggest winning margins on Saturday. Seville held a 27-point quarter time lead after kicking 3.9 to Powelltown's zero. In the second quarter, Seville absolutely had the ball on a string with 16 scoring shots to one and a massive lead of 72 points at half-time. Another massive third quarter with Seville kicking 6.7 to 2 straight and the game was well and truly done. Powelltown did manage to kick two goals, but it was the Blues day with a six-goal last quarter to run out winners by 136 points. Seville Best: J. Cecere (4 goals), B. Penwill (3 goals), N. O'Keefe (6 goals), M. Cecere (3 goals), G. Fraser (1 goal), R. Djohan. Powelltown Best: R. McCrimmon (1 goal), N. Moody, J. Ford, L. Middlemast, J. Ashby (1 goal), R. Briggs Yea 29.13.187 d Thornton Eildon 7.3.45 Yea share top spot by percentage only after getting their second win for the season. Yea were in complete control from the outset of this game and had a lead of 32 points at quarter time. They piled on an impressive 10 goals to four in the second but had a lead of 70 points at the main break. A 14-goal-to-three second half would have delighted the Yea faithful with two 10-goal bags to Michael Curcio and Christopher Graham. Thornton cannot be denied their efforts, but they came up against a team that is going to be hard to beat this year. Yea Best: M. Curcio (10 goals), C. Graham (10 goals), R. Aldous, H. Jarvie (1 goal), T. Kirkham, L. Beattie Thornton-Eildon Best: J. Scotland, T. Bail, J.

Herridge Yarra Glen 17.11.113 d Alexandra 4.6.30 Yarra Glen hosted their fifth Pride Cup on Saturday and wanted to stay undefeated in this annual event. They came out all guns blazing in the first and kicked 9.4 to 1 behind to make an amazing start to their defence. The second quarter was an in and under tough 30 minutes of football as neither side could find any space which on Yarra Glen's ground is hard to believe but there were only seven scoring shots in the whole quarter and one goal, which Alexandra snagged, and they outscored Yarra Glen in the quarter. Yarra Glen upped the ante again in the third and kicked six to three to extend their lead out to 71 points at three-quarter-time. The last quarter was again tight but Yarra Glen kicked two goals, while Alexandra could only manage two behinds. Yarra Glen was lucky that two quarters of football won this game; they won't get that luxury again. Yarra Glen Best: D. Hurley (Pride Cup Medallist; 3 goals), R. McDermott (6 goals), L. Telford (3 goals), N. Parlby, B. Binion, R. Smith Alexandra Best: S. Heveren, W. Goonan, L. Ragg, C. Heaslip, D. Roper, B. Girls rising to the occasion By Effie Caloutas At Healesville Soccer Club, the Reds' U14s team has risen to the occasion in its first season. Only two games in, the girls have won two games from two matches, including a convincing 8-0 victory against Wonga Park on the weekend. Team Manager, Steve Campbell, says the victory against Wonga Park was a great starting point for the season alongside their win against Collingwood City in Round 1 of the competition. "It was fantastic, the girls played great on the weekend," he said.
"My gut feeling was that they would do well in the league, but their first performance against Collingwood City was also very good and a great starting point to the season." Campbell says the girls were impressed with the result, giving them the confidence they needed for the rest of the season. "They were very happy with themselves, winning the first game so convincingly will give them plenty of confidence moving forward," he said. The team of 14 girls train on Thursday nights 5.30pm-6.30pm, with a possibility of another session added during the season. Campbell says he is looking forward to
working closely with the girls to make them better players. "The girls are attacking minded and my aim is to grow that culture and provide methods to allow them to control the game and go with their instincts," he said. "We are working on passing, good possession and grow other skills which are required." His daughter, Maddie, who is also playing for the U14 girls, says she really enjoys the game. "I came from a soccer mad family. My grandad came to Australia to play soccer so it just in my blood," she said. "I love watching and playing soccer. It is
competitive, interesting and fun." Inspired by Samantha Kerr, Maddie says there is a positive vibe among the group. "We trust each other and encourage one another to give 100 per cent," she said. "We are a confident team and excited for the rest of the season.

This week at the Yarra Valley Soccer Club saw four out of five teams playing at home. The Under 11s and 13s played in the morning and showed good signs of improvement despite two losses. However, the senior and reserve men's kept the winning streak at home alive with two very good wins. A dominating 3-0 score line for the reserves against Blackburn with Finlay Kerridge, Paul Healey and Mitchell Rinke getting on the scoresheet. The Firsts grinded out an important 1-0 win over long time rivals Gideons Warriors with Ben Shannon scoring a solitary goal.
