It is just over six months before the world celebrates 100 years since the end of World War I on 11 November 1918. At the time the Australian population numbered less then five million and almost 417,000 men enlisted in the war. It remains the country's costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. More than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed or taken prisoner. The centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War will be celebrated across Australia with numerous events. There are families across the country and our region who were forever affected by the war.Over the next six months we would like to share the stories and momentos residents have from this war or other wars. THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

RECYCLING SOLUTION IS A CIRCLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL The recycling crisis following China's rejection of Australia's recycled material may force Australia to become a more responsible nation when it comes to recycling, Noosa Parks Association guests were told at last Friday's forum. Last July China decided it would no longer take foreign waste which from Australia amounted to an annual average of about 619,000 tonnes of materials. Noosa Council's Waste Education Officer said Australia could follow the lead of some European countries and create a circular economy where materials are recycled and reused in the economy. Sweden recycles 99 per cent of household waste and some countries stipulate companies creating products such as plastic containers take responsibility for its disposal. A Noosa Council spokesman encouraged residents to continue recycling.

"Our Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016-2024 and our Towards Zero Waste campaign prioritise recycling and include strategies to increase waste diversion in line with goals set by the state," he said. "At least for now, we are fortunate to be

in a better position than many Australian councils as our recycling contractor, Visy, has confirmed it still has a market for our recyclables. Noosa residents are champion recyclers - our contamination rates are among the lowest achieved anywhere in Australia. The lower our contamination rates, the greater the market that exists for our recyclables. "However, these are uncertain times, which is why Noosa, like other Australian councils, sees value in developing long-term solutions. We are pleased to work with the LGAQ to consider solutions and we support the LGAQ's call for leadership from the state and federal governments on this national issue." At a Queensland waste forum held last week in Bundaberg State Environment Minister Leanne Enoch said she was meeting with local government representatives "to discuss practical opportunities in local communities".

SCHOOL ON THE MOOOVE TO THE COUNTRY SHOWS Senior student Kirra has decided agriculture will be her future after discovering an affinity with farm animal work through studies at Noosa District State High School. Despite growing up in suburbia it's the country life she sees for herself. On Monday Kirra was working with Narla to ready her for the upcoming country shows in Gympie and Nambour. Narla did pretty well at the recent Murgon show, is a natural in front of the camera and is learning to walk and stand as the judges demand. The school's agriculture coordinator Kerryn Foley said students learn a lot about animal husbandry including meat

production from working with the cattle at school and through the agricultural shows. The students will spend a day with the judges at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show at Nambour to learn more about judging and parading before putting their education into practise. In addition to cattle students are learning about poultry (chickens, ducks and geese), sheep and bees and some years the school operates aquaculture growing crayfish. The Nambour Show will be on 15, 16 and 17 June. For more information on the show visit http://www.sunshinecoastshow. asn.au/ ●

Noosa Police have charged a number of people following a series of break and enters across Noosa in recent weeks. Police charged two people with break and enter and drug charges after a search warrant was executed on a property in Hunchy. Police located property relating to thefts at the Noosa Salvation Army. Police said they also found drugs and drug paraphernalia during the search. Dean Franklin Currie, 43, of Hunchy was charged with three counts of break and enter, four counts of drug misuse and one of unlicensed driving. He was remanded in custody to appear in the Maroochydoore Magistrates Court on 21 May. A 42-year-old Currimundi woman was charged with two counts of entering premises with intent and three drugs charges and will appear in the Nambour Magistrates Court on 21 May. ●

"I want to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and group dialogue on smarter, innovative options to better manage, reuse and recycle waste," she said. Waste Recycling Industry Queensland CEO Rick Ralph said a national approach was needed and there was an opportunity for Australia to re-focus on how we manage waste. On Monday a Senate Inquiry hearing was held in Brisbane following others in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Chaired by Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson the inquiry hearing into the recycling crisis heard from Ipswich Mayor and representatives from the LGAQ, Brisbane City Council and the recycling industry. Issues covered included the future of recycling following the China ban on imports, the Queensland waste levy and the new federal government rubbish plan for dealing with waste. ● Boathouse and a nearby real estate agent on 22 April. Shane Joseph Young of no fixed address was charged with two counts of break and enter. He appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 26 April and was remanded in custody for mention on 3 May. ●

THEFTS AT ST TERESA'S Noosa Police are investigating thefts from student lockers at St Teresa's Catholic College on Thursday 12 April. Police said just before midday three females have entered the school grounds and rummaged through a number of lockers. Police are asking members of the public to assist with their inquiries. ●

GRAFFITI CHARGES Noosa Police have commenced proceedings against two 16-year-old juvenile males in relation to graffiti incidents that have occurred across Noosa, particularly in the Noosa Junction area and public transport hubs. Police said the youths have been diverted to the Graffiti Diversion Program. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS n her recent novel, 'A Journey of Creative Healing' Mary Atkins reveals how scientific research supports the program she undertook to help heal from grief and a profound illness more than 50 years ago. This is the story about a young mother of two babies whose body began exhibiting signs that something was terribly wrong at the same time she suffered the tragic loss of her husband. Newly diagnosed with aggressive Multiple Sclerosis, a virtually incapacitated Mary had to choose a new pathway for herself and her babies. She was able to make a remarkable recovery from the disease and re-write her story.

I

Mary Atkins was a toddler when her family survived the bombing and loss of their home and everything they owned in the London blitz in WW11. Her family became camp followers. Wherever her father, a captain in the Royal Artillery, was posted in England, they followed. "I have memories of the woeful pulse of air raid sirens mixed with snatches of damp air raid shelters, a cupboard under the stairs that smelled of molasses, and tiered bunks in London subway stations, all of these provided a refuge for us as the armadas of planes droned overhead," recalls Mary. Because of the war, and her gypsy lifestyle, Mary's schooling was non-existent. She grew up to work as a poorsecond secretary to many unwitting employers until at age 20, her mother saw an ad in the paper for air hostesses and encouraged Mary to apply. "The only qualification I had was 'un peu' schoolgirl French. So, with a wing and a prayer, I applied. Unbelievably, I was one of the chosen few who made it," she said. Air travel in the late 50's and early 60's was considered the golden age of flying and air hostesses were seen as minor celebrities. "I loved every second in the sky, every new destination. But sadly, it was also the days when the airlines only wanted single women, so with my marriage came the end of my glamour days in the sky. "I met Robert, an Australian dentist. We began a love affair complete with waltzing the streets of London, singing I could have danced all night." The young couple were married five years later and travelled the world together and crossing borders, dreaming of a large family. Mary had begun show signs of an illness which they had related to sickly pregnancies with their two children. "I had been plagued with weird episodes of muscular numbness or twitching, blurred vision and every now then. Occurrences were fleeting and so we did not worry." Two weeks before their second wedding anniversary Robert was tragically killed in a light plane crash. "It was the worst of times. My grief overwhelmed me and I was exhausted from trying to manage two babies on my own. Life could not any worse, I thought." After Robert's death her symptoms became more pronounced and within three years, Mary became incapacitated.

Read how Mary went into 50 years of remission from MS in her latest novel, "When I was diagnosed my random symptoms, like pendulum waves, created the perfect event for the first and second opinions of what they called back then 'aggressive' MS and that I would be wheelchair bound within a very short time." She rejected treatment and acted upon her own powerful intuitive messages which were telling her to begin doing something creative every day. Mary's daily focus became planning something creative that she had never done before. From listening and embracing an opera or following it as she focused on the libretto, to a picnic with her children in a place she had never been to before, craft work, painting and decorating, cooking unusual dishes, journal writing and flower arranging all became Mary's new daily rituals. Anything which was about focus, fun and ritual of conception, planning, doing and being present slowly began to work its magic for Mary. "I was extremely sick. Back then there was no drugs, no medication to help, so instead, I listened to my intuition. "Through rest, meditation and focusing on a daily creative practice, I came back to full health. The only possible indicator that I had a severe illness was in my feet peripheral neuropathy - a result of damage to nerves." Within twelve months, Mary could once again walk without aids and despite her prognosis, Mary was able to recover to full health. Mary's new journey through to the other side of illness and heartbreak was well under way and she was about to receive some good luck as well. "The children and I were holidaying with friends in the

Bahamas. On the first week of the holiday I met Peter, an English accountant working in Nassau and fell in love. "We married within the year and our daughter was born in Nassau. Our little blended family embraced the privileged and bronzed expatriate life in Nassau for nearly five years." Life in the Bahamas changed them forever. After a short spell in the UK, Mary and Peter had decided they wanted to raise their children in Australia. Juggling work and motherhood, newly immigrated Mary eventually rose through the ranks and became the national training manager of a large female sales team. She turned her back on the corporate ladder and returned to education becoming a home economist. She began her own company which morphed from being an agency for food professionals to providing marketing, event and support services for the Australian food and wine industries. Mary's business was instrumental in bringing innovative concepts and new life to marketing food and wine and organised events that linked small agricultural producers to high profile chefs. "I trained food professionals to talk and cook at the same time and created opportunities for food professional students to showcase their talents," she said. Mary was always writing on the sidelines, continuing to unleash her creativity, writing recipes, food, and travel articles. At sixty-five, after twenty plus years of refining her skills as a trainer and speaker, she wrote her first book Finding Your Voice - 10 Steps to Successful Public Speaking. Reviewers, including the Australian Financial Review, acclaimed the book as the definitive self-help guide to public speaking. "After retirement, I wrote a biographical novel, Losing You, which tells the story of a young wife and mother's complexity and courage in dealing with the loss of her husband. "Today I have reinvented myself as a luxury cruise ship lecturer, enriching passengers' adventures in the South Pacific and beyond. When I am not cruising, I am writing, researching and enjoying every minute of my life with Peter, family and the laid-back Queensland coast lifestyle." Her most recent book, 'A Journey of Creative Healing' Mary's message is clear - it is possible for people to recover from catastrophic illnesses, life-threatening illnesses. "I want to ask - how open are you to possibilities, or still open after disappointment and more disappointment in learning to live with the disease? "Over the years I tried to tell my story to people who suffered MS but their eyes glazed over, 'yes, but ... ' So I stopped until I could prove the steps that I had taken ticked all of the scientific boxes. "Read the New York best seller Radical Remission by Dr Kelly Turner. Visit the international Radical Remission Project Facebook page or website to see authenticated stories of people healing. This March Mary received the privilege of being Radical Remission Project's Healing Story of the Month. "I know the disease is wretched but please don't close down to possibilities. My story, like virtually all the stories in the Radical Remission Project records, was no 'pick up your bed and walk' miracle. It took time, resilience, focus and a powerful belief that I would recover from whatever ailed me." Mary has now been in remission from MS for 54 years. â—?

NEWS CRUSADERS TO THE KOALA RESCUE Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKC) are establishing a team of koala rescuers to watch over the area's dwindling population. Over the weekend a group of about 35 people took part in an information day to learn more about koalas and their habitat from Moreton Bay Koala Rescue's Anika Lehmann and Wildcare Australia's Rachel Lyons. Several koalas have recently been identified suffering illness and captured by QKC for treatment before being released back into the wild after their recovery. QKC president Meghan Halverson said members of the new team will soon take part in practical rescue techniques including tree climbing. On Sunday a group led by crusader and photographer Bernard Jean walked

Evonne Goolagong Foundation chairperson and tennis champion Evonne

Goolagong-Cawley officially opened the club praising its efforts to support the community, in particular by helping children in sport and education and in providing a wonderful facility for families to enjoy. Manager Phil Stephenson said the refurbishments included a new lounge, entrance, bar and kids area with the 270seat restaurant catering to two sittings on

A survey of the Noosa hinterland region will be conducted and anecdotal evidence of land use gathered by the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) for a Rural Enterprise Program funded by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation. The NBRF research project run by Country Noosa, USC and Noosa and District Landcare will involve a series of workshops to gather the data and its outcome will be "information resources and fact sheets" on farming practices for use by the communities. USC associate professor Claudia Baldwin said the workshops would discuss current and future rural land use as well as opportunities for diversification. "The workshops will use interactive digital mapping and real-life experience to understand agricultural and local land use management," she said. Project leader Nicole Duguid has run similar rural futures projects in Mackay and the Whitsunday region and said a better understanding of sustainable farming and rural enterprise opportunities was needed. "The program will engage with the local community, businesses and landowners to uncover and discuss local food supply chains and enable the identification of rural 'neighbourhood' collaborative ventures, amongst other things," she said. The program will run until next March. For more information visit www.countrynoosa.com ● 12386636-LN19-18

THE BOLTON REPORT

SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP

MIS OR DIS INFORMATION? As with so many topics that create havoc in the inbox, it’s sometimes hard to discern whether it is ‘Chinese whispers’, deliberate dispersal of incorrect information or misunderstanding that leads to community angst. Recently one item, even though not in the Noosa electorate nor a State issue, required Electorate Office research to alleviate the inbox outrage. The concern? That a slaughterhouse was being built in Noosa. Here is a summary of the information sourced. Noosa Council recently provided funds through its Economic Grants program to Country Noosa, a local not for profit organisation which works to provide local farmers with assistance to achieve sustainability for both the land and farmer. This grant, with contributions in kind from the Federal Government ‘Farming Together’ program, was to fund a study into yearling beef production (not to be confused with veal) which included options for processing. The Noosa Shire Local Economic Plan’s (2016) intent focused on diversification of Noosa’s economy as a way to reduce our heavy reliance on tourism, which included the potential in the rural enterprise sector. Noosa farmers, including the organic and regenerative sector, had voiced their concerns regarding the closure of Gray’s abattoir, a small boutique facility that had operated for nearly 50 years just outside Eumundi. This facility which is not located in the Noosa Shire, the Noosa Electorate nor on Noosa Council land, as many believe,

closed in 2012 when the owner retired. This left Noosa farmers without a local facility that addressed their needs for ethical slaughtering of their animals. Since that time they have been investigating options including mobile facilities or leasing the Gray’s site under a possible co-operative model. The Gray’s site holds an existing license and during the last quarter of a century has not attracted negative lobbying to our knowledge. Should at any point in the future the feasibility study reveal that it could be a viable option for our local farmers, there would then be a lengthy application process by an organisation to the Sunshine Coast Council which would include extensive compliance processes and community consultation. These processes which are often criticised as ‘red and green tape’, are put in place to address the environmental, animal management and amenity concerns of residents. This process is the appropriate place where residents and organisations have their say. This is where we hold our ‘family discussion’ on a planning matter that resides firmly in the realm of the local government. The best outcomes are achieved when communities work together with their local government to come together as a collective voice. This empowers our electorate and achieves greater credibility and results with other levels of government. ● Warm regards Sandy

PETS SHARED, FRIENDS FOUND BY MARGARET MACCOLL Jan and Lyn of Cooroy were brought together by Pets for Life for the benefit of Jan’s treasured Papillon, Angel, but the experience has been good for everyone. Jan’s emphysema, a progressive disease of the lungs that causes shortness of breath, prevents her from taking the 10-year dog for walks. She worried the very social Angel was missing the outings she enjoyed so much when she had been able to take her. So about three years ago Jan heard about Pets for Life, an organisation that for the past eight years has been helping people who are frail or disabled to look after their pets. After interviews and meetings Jan was introduced to volunteer Lyn who has since then walked Angel twice a week and forged a friendship with Jan. “Angel knows when it’s Tuesday and Friday and knows the time and she waits for Lyn,” Jan said. “I watch them go - Angel just runs off. She just thinks - freedom.” For Lyn, who can’t have a dog where she lives, it gives her a weekly pet fix. “It’s not like work. I look forward to seeing them,” she said. “I get a lot of exercise and I’ve gotten to know someone who’s outside my usual social group.” Jan urged other people in similar situations to give it a go. “There must be lots of people who can’t walk their dogs anymore,” she said. “A lot of people would be grateful to have someone walk their dog and it brings the community together.” Pets for Life have 60 volunteers assisting

BUSHCARE EVENT Heritage Park Bushland Care Volunteers and Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) are holding a Community Education day in Apex Park on Gympie Terrace on Monday 7 May from 10am until 2pm. There will be researches from 10am including Joel Fostin who will hold a workshop on the decline of Pandanus and Dr Javier Leon who uses drones in mapping. Plus information from NICA and bush care groups.

LABOUR DAY Labour Day on 7 May commemorates the granting of the eight hour working day for Australians in 1858. The Noosa Labor Party is inviting people to join them for a BBQ from noon on Gympie Terrace, opposite Robert Street, Noosaville. Further details are on the ALP Noosa Branch Blog.

Jan and Lyn with Angel. 40 pet owners to meet the needs of their pets whether it be exercising, bathing, grooming or taking them to the vet. Co-ordinator Mark Wischnat said the free program which is based at the Caloundra Community Centre had funding from the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and was expanding its reach into Noosa, with three clients already on their books. Mark said the program began after a woman who worked at an animal refuge wanted to do something to help people

still living in their homes who were surrendering their pets because they could no longer look after them. “This wonderful program works by matching up pet owners with screened and trained volunteers who can provide regular assistance,“ he said. Pets for Life is looking for senior pet owners who think they could benefit from a little extra help, as well as interested volunteers. Phone Mark on 5491 4000. ●

NEWS

A DECADE OF HITCHINGS Tim and Sayaka chose Noosa for their wedding last year. Tim, an Australian, married his Japanese bride at the Hidden Grove after he brought her here on holiday and she fell in love with the area. "You can't beat the location," said Tim who now lives in Japan. "We love the beach and the laid-back atmosphere. Noosa has a warm, intimate feeling and maintains a community atmosphere." The couple were impressed by the service they received from the local wedding professionals and so were their guests. Noosa Wedding Organisation (NWO) Committee member Patricia Quinn said their positive experience was a direct reflection of the quality of the organisation that established 10 years ago. Since its launch NWO's vision has been to unite all Noosa wedding suppliers, to promote Noosa as a world-class wedding destination, and to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of business providers in Noosa has been highly successful. Along the way, its role has expanded: from a networking group, to a supportive group, assisting and promoting local businesses within an ethical framework. The not-for-profit organisation also works with Tourism Noosa for the best possible outcome for its members and

wedding visitors and the wedding industry brings more than $32m per year to the Noosa economy. "Now the wedding industry here in Noosa is very well organised, friendly and inclusive," celebrant and NOW co-founder Jacqui Gray said. "We suppliers work well with each other and with other institutions to make the wedding experience the best it can be for couples." For more information visit www. Noosaweddings.org ●

DRONES WILL CHANGE LIFE When Dr Javier Leon of the Sunshine Coast University mapped the Torres Strait for his PhD satellite images provided the best images available but he was always searching for more detail. Now he has 15 drones he uses to turn pictures into data and 3D models and is excited about the future capabilities of drones. Dr Leon was guest speaker at Noosa U3A last week and spoke about the uses and misuses of drones. He said while some people disregard the rules set down by Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) drones in his line of research involving geographical mapping over land and sea accuracy and adherence to the rules is everything. For his environmental work a drone can provide very high-resolution images and be used to identify items or animals. Dr Leon conducts a coastal survey of Peregian Beach each month in an exercise he says is "easy and cost effective". But the costs of expensive equipment such as precision GPS measures, years of experience, a system of overlapping photos and extensive data processing is not so cheap and easy. Dr Leon predicts drones will change our lives over the next 10 years as technology advances and their potential is realised. At a recent World of Drones conference held in Brisbane futurist Thomas Frey said by 2030 drones would be flying, swimming and rolling along the ground. Already drones are being used in research to measure waves, count birds on a beach, identify koalas in a forest and in emergency services to search and rescue people lost on land and sea and hard to access areas such as cliff faces, glaciers or deserts are no trouble for drones. Farmers are using drones to identify which areas of their farm require fertilising and public health professionals are using them to identify mosquito breeding areas to reduce malaria spread. ●

WE REMEMBER While transcribing his father's memoirs Noosa Today advertising manager Phill Le Petit came across world war stories and treasures brought back by his father, Alfred Harcourt Le Petit, who served on the beaches at Dunkirk during WWII and his grandfather, William Alexander Le Petit, whose heroic act in WWI earned him a Military Medal. As we marked Anzac Day last week and in the 100th anniversary year of WWI Noosa Today has shared these hard-earned momentos. It is six months before we mark 100 years since the end of WWI on 11 November. Reproduction of The Times, London newspaper dated 5 June, 1940, depicts the incredible evacuation by the Allies during WWII at Dunkirk, France, from the invading Germans. Alfred Harcourt Le Petit kept a copy as a reminder of his own escape from the beaches of Dunkirk with many others. He describes in his memoirs the incredible human ant trail that wove it's way to the beaches while being stalked and strafed by the merciless Luftwaffe. It was a scene of horrific carnage and stench that somehow remains forever stained upon your being, he said.

Under enemy fire in France William Alexander Le Petit rose from the trenches into no man’s land to rescue an officer. He carried the wounded officer over his shoulder to safety and received the WWI Military Medal for his gallant action. noosatoday.com.au

FOCUS ON … Mother's Day

FEEL BEAUTIFUL AFTER MASTECTOMY The big C, that's the dreaded word. Breast Cancer. The words that no lady ever wants to hear, but unfortunately so many do. The good news is that survival rates are on the up due to medical advances, so that leaves you to focus on recovery after you've had a mastectomy and to look great in your own clothes again. Gone are the days where a mastectomy patient has to settle for second best in the breast form and lingerie department. No more filling the breast cup with tissues or fabric and being uncomfortable all day.

Breast forms have come a long way in recent times. There are literally dozens of shapes weights and sizes to choose from, which will match as closely to your remaining breast as possible. There are also breast forms that can be used while swimming or exercising, so your lifestyle doesn't have to change. For ladies who have had bilateral surgery, picking the breast size you've always wanted to be is now an option. The federal government will cover the cost of your breast prosthesis up to $400, per

breast, every two years for the rest of your life and many private health funds also cover the cost of post mastectomy bras, so it's worth giving them a call. At Tracey G Prosthetics and Lingerie Maroochydore the team are Amoena trained and certified and won't be satisfied with your look unless you are. LETTERS MOTION RAISES QUESTIONS Councillor Jackson’s lack of support from fellow councillors upon moving what appears to be a reasonable and innocuous motion raises serious questions in my mind. First, council's CEO states that the committee “may be" exempted from keeping minutes if it doesn’t have final decision-making power. If, as stated in the article, council has not passed a motion of exemption, does this mean they are currently in breach by not taking minutes? Or is the committee taking minutes but not publishing them? Secondly, Mayor Wellington says that “raising an issue ... without discussing it first with the mayor and fellow councillors is not the right way to go about dealing with such a ... matter." My question is: “Did the mayor or councillors contact Cr Jackson indicating they would not support the motion? That would have been a courtesy, at least. If they didn’t want to support this seemingly innocent motion, then why not? After all, they had nine days' notice. Finally, assuming the motion was not fully supported in our “unified and transparent“ council, why wasn’t it at least seconded so it could be debated, and/or voted on? Ken Coleman, Tewantin

OIL ROYAL COMMISSION We are having a Royal Commission which so far has shown that the Australian banks have turned a blind eye to some of their employees being deceitful towards the public to satisfy their greed. Most of us Australians because we were taught to trust them and were innocently unaware of this, now feel we have been taken for a ride. On the subject of being taken for a ride, then the fuel companies and their franchisees are using our vehicles which we rely on to take us for a ride by ripping us off at the bowser. So let’s have a Royal Commission or similar on the activities of the oil companies, starting at the top and through to the retail outlets. E.Wright, Sunrise Beach.

WARS ARE INEVITABLE I came across this rather apt quote attributed to Albert Einstein in a congressional record: “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but I do know that World War IV will be fought with rocks.” It is rather interesting and frightening to postulate how future wars will play out, as perpetual war and international conflict are inevitable. Sadly, warfare is the fabric of human existence. I don’t think this is necessarily a defeatist worldview, but perhaps, simply that of a realist. Bridge Muir, Cooroy

LIVE

’80S LEGENDS ROCK EUMUNDI BY HOLLIE HARRIS Put Saturday 12 May in your diary for what is sure to be a helluva fun night when the star-studded 'Absolutely 80s Band' bring their chart-toppers to The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Get your crew together and make a group booking, as all bookings of 6 or more will go in the draw to WIN a pre-gig dinner and drinks package to the value of $250. The Absolutely 80s Band features Oz music stars: Uncanny X Men's Brian Mannix, Kids in the Kitchen's Scott Carne noosatoday.com.au

and The Models' Sean Kelly - playing all their big hits including 'I Hear Motion', 'Everybody Wants to Work', '50 Years', 'Out of Mind' and loads more. Without doubt, the 80s was one of the most memorable and massive decades of music. Coming straight out of the 'Countdown Era', these pop idols will bring their rockstar A-game to this big show! Big songs, big moves, big fun! Way before Derek Zoolander became the world's most famous male model, these really really ridiculously good looking - and talented - boys were

prancing, dancing, pouting and throwing 'blue steel' before it was even a thing. This is a high octane two-hour show that pushes the limits of fun, excitement and energy, with big 80s hits, sung by the guys that sang 'em back then. On your radio and on Countdown. This is who Molly was, um, talking about when he said: "Do yourself a favour, go buy their records". They're the real deal. Sure, they've been around but that's what makes 'em so damn good! Get ready to rock out! It's time to get loud, sweaty and dance your butt off as

the hottest 80s show in the country, the Absolutely 80s 'Blue Steel Tour' blows you away! TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or direct from the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $30 at the door Doors open 8pm and don't forget to book The Imperial Hotel's FREE courtesy bus. IT operates Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm + Sundays from 2pm travelling to Eumundi, Belli Park, Cooroy, Doonan, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, and Verrierdale. Phone Gary on 0467 414 171 to book. â—?

Beartown, by Fredrik Backman

Kasey Chambers & The Fireside Disciples - Campfire

Babe - Cooroy Library Rooftop Movie

People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever-encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded town. And that rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior hockey team is about to compete in the national championships, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of the town now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semifinal match is the catalyst for a violent act that leaves a young girl traumatised. ●

The May screening at Cooroy Library Rooftop Movies is BABE taking place on this Friday 4 May. Go early to get yourself a spot and set up your blankets and picnics, in preparation for the screening to start around 6.30pm(ish). Entry to the movies is by donation. About Babe - Gentle farmer Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) wins a piglet named Babe (Christine Cavanaugh) at a county fair. Narrowly escaping his fate as Christmas dinner when Farmer Hoggett decides to show him at the next fair, Babe bonds with motherly border collie Fly (Miriam Margolyes) and discovers that he too can herd sheep. Rated G. ●

From The Campfire Song (feat Alan Pigram) all the way to Happy (feat The Little Pilgrims) this album satisfies from the first to the last. Kasey Chambers has never denied her Australian country roots and here the link is further defined by the language and personal experiences from her and her contributors. US country (via Emmylou Harris) is also strongly displayed on The Harvest & The Seed, and there's a nod to the Chambers legacy itself with This Little Chicken feat Bill Chambers (listed simply as "My Dad" on the sleeve). Making this music seems to be as joyful an experience as it is to hear. ●

TRIBUTE TO FLEETWOOD MAC Lovers of the gauzy, rocking days of Fleetwood Mac can rejoice. The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show is returning to the Tewantin Noosa RSL once more this Saturday night. Back by popular demand, this tribute band will transport you back to those long-haired, carefree days of the original band. On stage you will see an eerie likeness to the mysterious goddess Stevie Nicks, as well as Christine and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and of course Mick Fleetwood. Forming back in 1967, Fleetwood Mac was a collaboration of many talented artists who came together to create their own unique sound. This unique brand of wild percussion, tight and energetic guitar work, and ethereally emotive vocals skyrocketed the band to international stardom which lasted well over 4 decades.

The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show will bring the joyful hits of yesteryear back to life. Hits such as Rhiannon, Go Your Own Way, Littles Lies, Rumours, and so many more can be expected. This isn't a show to be viewed from the back row. The band encourages you get up, sing along, and bust out some of your best Fleetwood-Mac-Moves. The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show has performed throughout Queensland and the Sunshine Coast, where the band members have been met with applause at each venue. The show promises to have you questioning whether the real Mick Fleetwood is in front of you. If you want to catch the Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show then make sure you throw on your best gossamer shawl, frizz your hair, and head to the Tewantin Noosa RSL this Saturday 5 May at 8pm. ●

TEA ETIQUETTE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Cancer Council Queensland has teamed up with one of the State's top experts in tea etiquette, Jo Hayes, to help Australia's Biggest Morning Tea participants host an event in style. Ms Hayes, founder of Etiquette Expertrom has shared her top tips to help Queenslanders fine-tune their tea etiquette skills. 1. When planning out what tea and food to serve at your event, remember that just like wines complement particular foods, so too does tea. With so many tea flavours available today, there is a tea to suit every cuisine. For a traditional afternoon tea, pair a bold black tea, like English Breakfast or Earl Grey, with scones, jam and cream. If you prefer fruity tea, preferably a black tea flavoured with natural essence of fruit, pair this with sweet desserts like cheesecake. Alternatively, green tea is the perfect accompaniment for Asian or spicy foods. 2. To add a touch of elegance to your Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, use fine bone china teacups. If you don't have any, borrow some off a friend or a relative - or drop by your local op shop to pick up a pre-loved set. Add to your collection each year so that you're never in short supply. 3. After you've served your tea, it's important to drink it correctly. Raising your little finger while drinking tea is a very common myth - but it's actually considered rude and should be avoided.

For a fun challenge, share etiquette tips like this and challenge your friends and family attending your Biggest Morning Tea to polish up on tea etiquette together. 4. If milk is desired - there's a right way to do it. Once the tea has been poured, pour in the milk gently and noiselessly, moving the teaspoon in a small arch back and

forth in the centre of the cup to blend it in. Avoid clinking the sides of the teacup. Your teaspoon should then be placed back on the saucer before you start drinking. 5. The tradition of an afternoon or morning tea goes much deeper than simply drinking tea - it promotes civility, relationships, slowing down and taking time out to relax,

and enjoying the simple things in life. The official day to host is Thursday, May 24, however anyone can host an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea anytime throughout April, May or June. To host an event, or donate, visit biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. All hosts will receive a free host kit. â—?

ENJOY A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM BY HOLLIE HARRIS A riotous ride through a world of young lovers, fairies and fools awaits audiences as Little Seed Theatre Company presents A Midsummer Night's Dream in May. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Macdonald, and staged in the 250-seat roman-style amphitheatre at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, A Midsummer Night's Dream is Little Seed's second foray into Shakespearean drama. It is also part of the upcoming Anywhere Theatre Festival, which transforms unconventional settings - from backyards and bookstores to caf¨¦s and Cooroy's spectacular amphitheatre - into performance spaces. "Last year, Little Seed's production of Romeo and Juliet was honoured with an award for being one of the outstanding experiences of the Anywhere Theatre Festival. This year, we are excited to bring one of Shakespeare's most popular plays to life," says Little Seed's director, Johanna Wallace. The storyline of Shakespeare's comedy, set in a forest, centres on two pairs of lovers who enter the kingdom of fairies. What ensues is a mix of hilarity, heartbreak and high romance. According to Ms Wallace, who will co-direct the play alongside Ilsa WynneHoelscher Kidd, the production stars a cast of young local talent, including Madison Beaufort as Titania, Queen of the Fairies,

A Midsummer Night's Dream's Puck. Nathanial Knight as Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Jack Miller as Puck. Heather Groves, the production's musical director, will present original and live music, while magnificent costumes, designed by Leona Seib and Sally Alexander, will capture

Picture: Ilsa Wynne-Holscher Kidd the botanical theme. "This production of A Midsummer Night's Dream has it all - magical performances from passionate young players, brilliant costumes and an amazing location. We can't wait to share this

production with the Sunshine Coast community," Ms Wallace adds. A Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed at the Cooroy Amphitheatre on 12, 13, 19 and 20 of May. Tickets can be purchased online: www.anywhere.is ●

TRY THIS … Sound Crowd GET YOUR SINGING ON!

THREE …

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sound Crowd is a community choir kicking off in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Wednesday 9 May. Director Analiese Long says the contemporary choir gives everyone a chance to sing well-known, well-loved songs with a drink in hand and mates around. "Everyone can sing, and it's even more fun in a group," says Analiese "And there is nothing like a choir to help you hit the high notes!" "This is an inclusive event and we welcome everyone - experienced singers as well as those of us who happily belt out a song in the shower or car with the music turned up loud!", she says. There is no preparation required by choristers before the Sound Crowd events. Your guides for the evening will teach you one song in an hour and a half, with the group all performing it together at the end of the night. Take the main vocal or try out some harmonies. Analiese stresses that vocal chords like to be lubricated, and the fact that the Eumundi Sound Crowd event is being held in The Brewery (an event space overlooking a working brewery), well, it just writes itself. Sound Crowd will supply the words and musical accompaniment, so participants simply need to grab a drink and join in. Whether you sing high, low or just like to belt out the melody, we will make groups and learn parts together. Analiese and her husband Mike Long 30 NOOSA TODAY

TRANQUIL GARDEN FIGHTS AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE Tulasco is a 12 acre bush garden that has been developed by David and Cathy Braddock over a period of fourteen years and will be open to the public as part of the Open Garden program. When purchased in 2004 the land was bare with few native trees and only two small dams. Previously, the sub tropical rain forest covering the area had been cleared for timber, cattle and small crop farming. The Braddocks saw the land's potential as a garden because of its relatively high rainfall, beautiful views, and interesting topography. Over the years different areas have been landscaped and developed. A jetty and fountain add interest to one of the dams, rain forest plants flourish around the perimeter and a waterfall flows a nearby gully. Native fish and several species of rare frogs live among the water lilies and lotus. There is a small orchard and rose garden, a dense forest of sub tropical trees where the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly has been sighted and a hilly slope planted with more than 20 species Just turn up - or contact Tara 0402 764 574. Noosa Eagles U7 Gold were so excited to be back on the field after the Easter break and played a great game against Caloundra Blue. With a win of 6-1 the kids played so well as a team, passing the ball to each other to get through defence. Well done to Cruiz, Imogen, Emily and Zach for their wonderful efforts on field and keeping the ball away from the opposing team and congratulations to Matthew and Myles for your goals. Another big congratulations to our hard working goalie Oscar who did such a great job stopping every ball that came toward him. Player of the week goes to Imogen who was on the ball throughout the entire game. A great game of soccer between the Under 10 Gold and Caloundra after long Easter break. The Noosa Eagles started well with strikers Bella and Harrison having some great opportunities in front of the Caloundra goal but couldn't convert. Declan showed some amazing skills in goals with Eli helping out at the end of the game. Solid defense again from Sienna, Cooper, Finn and Charlie kept the strong attacks out but Caloundra snuck a couple of sneaky goals in before halftime. The midfield of Bonnie, Lachlan, Tom and Montanah played their hearts out and kept the engine room of the team ticking over, a lucky goal to Caloundra in the last minute gave us a 0-3 loss but we won't be so rusty next week. A close game for U10 Black who despite being down on players, fought hard and played well

Noosa Junior Rugby BY DOUG TOMS Dragons U7s At Cotton Tree on Saturday 28th April our full squad of U7s ( with support from the ever reliable Jack Cooper from the U6s ) once again put on an excellent display of junior Rugby for all in attendance . The team, ably captained by Finn Rivers, gave the team from Maroochydore a very enjoyable match with excellent tries being scored by both teams . In attack and defence Brooklyn Griggs, Zach Eaton, Brody Ruster and George Hiilhouse were tireless . This week the player of the match was Billy Gunton who played well in all aspects of the game with always a smile on his face !! It was noted by a couple of the coaches that the players' spatial awareness is really starting to develop with now a lot less players runnning accidently over the sidelines than was the case at the start of the year. As the season unfolds all coaches and referees will be further introducing line outs, scrums etc that form part of our wonderful game. ●

BIG FIGHTS AHEAD FOR IMPACT BOXING BY RON LANE With the Commonwealth Games now behind us it gives an opportunity to look at the results of the Australian boxing squad. In the words of Mark Evans assistant coach for the Australian team, "For us the results were very good probably the most successful ever. We finished with a total of 3 gold 2 silver and 3 bronze and from a team of just 13; it has been a good performance." For Mark owner and head coach of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, it was also something personal. One of the Impact boxing squad Taylah Robertson a member of the team finished with a bronze medal. In the fight for the silver she came up against England's Lisa Whiteside presently rated number one in the world and was

somewhat shattered when she lost in a split decision. "To loose on a split decision to the worlds best gives Taylah a definite world rating ; and let's be honest Taylah with only 19 fights and her first games was up against an opponent with 32 fights 2 Olympics and 2 Commonwealth Games to her credit: so Taylahs effort was one of courage." To have a local coach on the Australian panel and a local boxer with a bronze medal says a lot for our boxing. When asked why she got into the sport Taylah at 19, already an Australian title holder replied, ''I just wanted to get into a sport and boxing appealed to me." Now this young lady with the looks of a model will start on a ten week training program with club-mate

Ella Boot in preparation for the Womens World Championship Title trials. The championships will be held later this year in Delhi India. Regarding the Games coach Evans was full of praise. "The boxing was of very high standard and the tournament well organized. When our team members were fighting we had a full house and the atmosphere was electric; our supporters really got involved" Before heading off to the games Evans completed extensions to the existing Impact gym. This upgrader will enable the club to concentrate, amongst other things, on more high intensity cardio work thus keeping in step with all aspects of fitness for members of his team. We wish them well. ●

It's a Bronze for Taylah Robertson at the Commonwealth Games.

PLENTY OF BALL ACTION BY ADRIANE SEABORN Under 6s Noosa Fins v Eumundi Dragons This weekend the much improved Fins took on the entertaining Eumundi Dragons. The enthusiasm from both teams made an epic contest with our boys chasing hard right to the end. The back and forth contest made for an absorbing game, highlighted by Lennox's man of the match performance. U6s Noosa Reds v Caloundra The Reds played well with Louis being awarded Dominoes Player of the Week. Awesome try scoring by Louis, Harry, Zac, Cooper and Archie. Under 7s Noosa Fins v Caloundra Gold The Fins flew out of the blocks in and had their first try on the scoreboard in a matter of seconds, through some swift passing, skilful running and a diving try in the corner by Owen Wilson. Dominoes Player of the Week Arlo Hillen had his best game in a Dolphins jersey and was involved in most of the Dolphins attacking plays. Under 7s Noosa Reds v Caloundra Black The Reds found the going tough and had to be organised and speedy in defence to keep the visitors pacey attack at bay and the try count close to parity. Dominoes Player of the Week Henry Brennan never stopped running for the team, with devout support by Lewis Ramsden who was awarded 'best & fairest' by the opposition at the end of the game. U8 Noosa Reds v Caloundra Gold Caloundra are always a well-coached team and this was reflected in the early stages of the game as they crossed for a couple of tries. The Reds however lifted their tackling and began making solid individual runs through the Caloundra defence crossing for a few tries. The second half was very similar to the first, Caloundra have a few players with afterburners and crossed again for a couple of tries early. The Reds put on their best try so far this season mid-way through the second half, combining ruck, passing, offloading and support play skills. U8 Noosa Fins v U8 Brothers Wow what a ripper of a game this week. Our training session work is showing in our games. Captain for this week Gus lead his team on with pride. Parents were cheering on a super speedy try scored by Hamish Knott this week. Kellen Donoghue was working hard like a machine pushing through Brothers and being everywhere & Ethan Marshall got stuck in to support his teammates more this week - Great noosatoday.com.au

Getting a break.

Go Dolphins. involvement from all the boys - Well Done! No scores in this grade but boy did we get ALOT of tries! Dominoes Player of the Day - Kellen Donoghue Ben & Jerry's Noosa Player of the Day Ethan Marshall U10 Noosa Fins 39 d Flinders 8 It was a beautiful morning on the rugby pitch at Maroochydore, where the Under 10's headed into enemy territory against Flinders. Round 2 proved to be the game that this team started to form a cohesive group in both attack and defence. Each player knew what was expected of them and their fellow teammates. This made for great rugby to watch. Dominoes Player of the Week was Levi Cairns and special mention to Willem Uechtritz for the integral part he played. U11 Matthew Flinders 49 d Noosa Fins 12 From the opening whistle the Fins were locked into a fierce battle against a well-trained Flinders team. Our forwards

defended valiantly, however the backline skills of Flinders saw a number of bursts which took them over the line several times in the first half. After the break, things looked bad with their local giant lumbering down the field. Then, some Flinders sledging in the rucks fired up our team. Suddenly, our backs sprinted down the field; the forwards fought ferociously; players barged and charged ... and over the line we went. "A fluke!" they cried. So we did it again! A really tough game which the team walked away from with heads held high and smiles all around. Dominoes Player of the Week : Atticus Richter Noosa Reds 12 drew Grammar 12 A well drilled and competitive Grammar side lived up to their much touted reputation as an epic battle was played out. New recruit Liam Olver spotted an opportunity on the blind side and darted forty metres to dot down in the corner leaving a tricky conversion in blustery

conditions. The Noosa scrum proved to be the difference in the second half as the lads stole several tighthead scrums to secure much needed possession. Opportunities out wide we're limited as the Grammar defence flirted with the offside line forcing the forward pack to find a way to the line. George White finally broke through and secured the much needed five pointer, with Charlie Harmer converting to tie the match. A massive team effort from the Reds lead from the front by Captain Eddy Connors and Dominoes Player of the Week Gusso Anderssen. U12 Noosa Reds 34 v Flinders 7 Saturdays match against the wellpolished Flinders side was much anticipated and a big test for the Reds. Our forwards dominated from start to finish and gave our backs plenty of opportunity to play some slick open field rugby with 3 of the six tries coming from our speedy wingers Louie Griffen and Dayyan Van Veen. Special mention to our other try scorers Thomas Kibble, Jack Paenga & Angus low. Our Dominos Player of the Week went to our Prop Neiko Ashton-Martin for his hard running and brick wall defence. U14 Noosa 12 v Flinders Saints 34 A much closer game than the scoreline suggests in this entertaining contest. Noosa showing some good signs of progress and will go well as the season moves on. SPORT TODAY NOOSA REDS KEEN FOR FIRST WIN

Perfect day for a sail.

ANZAC DAY SAIL As Anzac Day is one of the most important dates on the calendar, Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club sailors commemorated the day on the beautiful Noosa River with a special memorial race. After attending services, local sailors made their way to NYRC to honour those who have sacrificed their lives to preserve the lifestyle and freedom we now enjoy. Vice Commodore Durn Dart organised a beautiful perpetual trophy featuring a figurine of a digger resting on

reverse arms. The “Cheers Everybody” team were this year’s winners of the event and are parents of currently serving ADF personnel and so were very proud to be awarded the inaugural trophy. Many thanks to Durn, volunteers, staff and competitors helped to make this a memorable and respectful event. After recent months of less than optimal sailing conditions, ANZAC Day offered up glorious sailing weather on the river and attracted a good fleet of boats. ●

The Cheers Everybody team won the trophay.

Noosa Red U14 boys hosted Bribie Island Bulldogs in round 2 at home. The Bulldogs were a little depleted however the Tigers were keen to notch up their first win of the season. The game started well and was quite even in the first quarter however the Tigers held a narrow 12 point lead at the first break. After that point, the Tigers dominated proceedings and kept Bribie Island scoreless for the remainder of the game. The final score was Noosa Red11.16 82 to Bribie Island Bulldogs 1.0.6. It was a very even team performance across the board and the team showed great improvement from their round one loss. The awards went to ruckman Liam Switzer who did some great things around the ground and also slipped forward to kick a few goals. Hugo Evans was everywhere and dominated his wing. And Fletcher Reynolds provided a great target across half forward and set up a number of goals for his team mates. So a first win for the Reds this season and will look to back it up against Kawana Park Hawks this Sunday. ●

The Rococo Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have positioned themselves on top of the Hart Sports Division 1 ladder after a comprehensive 12 goal thrashing of University of QLD last Saturday at Weyba road. Wilst the final scoreboard shows a total dominance in scoring shots the first quarter was anything but even as a well organised Uni of QLD seemed more committed and were much cleaner with ball in hand than the highly fancied Noosa Tigers. Senior coach Sammy Faure was stern at the first break with his words reiterating that hard work wins footy matches not reputations. After that break the Tigers never looked back as prime mover Tom Templeton dominated the midfield with his trademark explosion from the contest whilst the class of stack and Fitzpatrick started to heap pressure on the Brisbane students. The final half of the game was all Noosa's as their running game completely took its toll on the visitors with constant surge from half back and a press that made it hard for University of QLD in defence. Big forward Liam Kennedy bagged 6 goals in an

impressive display whilst Delbridge, Vaughan and O'Brien helped themselves to multiple goals. Connor McDonald continued his super form in the ruck whilst left footers Stevens and Maher once again were among the very best players for the tigers. Stack was terrific for the entire four quarters however the influence Templeton had on the contest in that second and third quarter really took the game away from the lions. The win certainly sets up a classic encounter with the 3rd place Coorparoo this Saturday night under lights with the game starting at 6 pm. This is one not to be missed especially with ex tiger star and club champion Riley Buntain donning the navy blue jumper of Coorparoo in 2018. Great to see club legend and life member Brian Trist down at Weyba road last Saturday who is battling serious illness, He just epitomises the tiger spirit and we hope to see Tristy at many more games this season. Don't forget to book your presidents dinner spot for Saturday night as we welcome the fastest bowler in history Jeff Thomson to our footy club. Go tigers Cheers Pittsy ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Dawn service at Orchid Beach. Photos courtesy K’gari Beach Houses (kgari.com).

IT’S THE FESTIVAL TO END ALL FESTIVALS There's been a lot of chatter in public forums and behind closed doors in recent weeks about how tourism in general and "major tourism events" in particular are affecting our Noosa lifestyle, for better or worse. I mentioned in this space a few weeks ago my own view, as a founding father of a major event and a resident of almost 30 years, that you'd have to be really, really old to remember when Noosa's economy wasn't reliant on the tourist dollar, but of course people have every right to complain about the kind of community they knowingly bought into. In that spirit, I've been delving deep into history, where so many answers to contemporary problems lie, looking for ways and means we could reinvent the Noosa events calendar, and perhaps regain the support of those who claim to suffer event fatigue, to the point where they have to leave town at least once a month, if road closures will allow, of course. And hidden away on a dusty hard drive I found the report of Honolulu's Pacific Commercial Advertiser on preparations for the full moon regatta at Waikiki on November 7, 1908. Under the auspices of Alexander Hume Ford's brand new Outrigger Canoe Club, an afternoon and evening of bizarre and spectacular aquatic events was planned. The Advertiser reported: "The latest addition to the list of events is a surfboard-tilting contest with spears. Each competitor will be provided with old Hawaiian willow wand spears and will be started in the surf from a point convenient for the purpose. Near shore there will be a bladder anchored and the rider who is able, while standing, to cast

the spear and burst the bladder will receive the prize. This is a very clever idea and will doubtless result in a most exciting contest when the able young athletes come scooting down the waves, balancing themselves cleverly for the throw. Each rider will carry six spears and must cast only while standing on the board." Throwing spears in the general direction of the crowd on the beach while riding a wave - now why haven't we thought of that for the surf festival! The Advertiser continued: "The object that the club has in view is to develop water sports and to add as much variety as possible to this healthy form of amusement so that interest and enthusiasm will always be fresh." Yes, yes, exactly. Kind of like WWF meets WSL. It reminded me of a meeting I had with the man sometimes known as Peter Drouyn back more than 40 years ago at the old Surfers Paradise Beer Garden to chat about a new pro surfing contest to be sponsored by Stubbies shorts. After hearing Drouyn discuss his ideas for gladiatorial combat in the surf over about three schooners, I said: "Peter, you're not

Strapped on a serious deadline, I spent Anzac Day hunched over a Mac in my hovel of an office and missed the whole damn show (except for the deafening Hornets fly-over, of course). By all accounts, the dawn service at Tewantin was touching and memorable, as it always is, and I saw some social media of a glorious sunrise at Currumbin too. But who knew about the dawn service at Orchid Beach, Fraser Island! My mate Simon, who has the K'gari Beach Houses up there, sent me some photos of a humongous crowd gathered on the sand. Apparently the commemoration has been going on for about 30 years, starting from a couple of dozen fishos paying their respects over a dawn ale, and now attracting thousands from all over for a service followed by a beach breakfast and two-up, of course. It looks wonderful. I know where I'm going next Anzac Day. ●

suggesting that surfing should become a contact sport, are you?" "Phil," he said, slamming his beer down on the soggy formica table, "It can be, and it's the way forward." Now, I'm not saying I necessarily agreed with the man who would become Westerly Windina, but combining all the elements of crowd appeal - sex, violence, mayhem - into one neat package does have some merit. But let's get back to 1908, where the Advertiser continued: "After the daylight program a luau will be served on the Outrigger grounds from 5-8pm. The campfires will be lighted at dusk, and from then until 11pm there will be illuminated canoeing on the lagoon. The entertainments in the grass houses will go on all the evening, and the dances at both hotels will commence at 8 o'clock." The evening events included "electric surfboarding in small surf, torch-lit surfboard races and a three-paddle canoe

Chuck in a jazz band, a wine tasting and one-act play and you could dispense with Noosa's entire events schedule in an afternoon and an evening, leaving the good burghers to get on with their contended nothingness the other 364 days, while the bush turkeys take over the ghost town that once was Hastings Street. It's only an idea that I'm hoping to turn into a concept, but watch this space.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

ANOTHER NEAT NIPPERS’ SEASON Saturday morning on Noosa's Main Beach another season of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers came to an end. The function to mark the occasion said it all. With some 28 of our little Seahorse Nippers surrounded by 60 helpers and their proud parents and supporters, the laughter and joking told all involved that the six years of hard work and dedication was indeed time well spent. To start the occasion chairman Steve Mawby and wife Nicky (founders of the Seahorse Nippers) congratulated the children for their efforts and the helpers for their time and dedication. He also extended apologies on behalf of Dawn Fraser AO, MBE, who because of interstate business was unable to attend. Along with Jordy Mercer, both ladies are actively involved as Patrons. It is now a Seahorse tradition that at the finish of a season each Nipper is presented with a small trophy and certificate of congratulations for their participation in the events; events held every morning during their season. This was done by Jordy Mercer and a senior representative of the Noosa Heads SLSC. As with all successful organisations such as this, their support group is of the utmost importance. Quietly working behind the scenes, one group in particular is priceless; and with their big white shirts and caps they are easy to spot. To all involved they are proudly known by their catchy name; the Seahorse

Another Seahorse Nippers season comes to an end. Volunteers. They drive the club bus from Lions Park to the beach, help families whose children are in need of wheel chairs and at the finish of the mornings do the same, only in reverse: beach back to the Park.

To be able to eliminate the problems of parking for parents their work is really appreciated. Also the support of our local shire council with regard to parking is noted by all.

On Saturday before the briefing it was good to see the number of young members amongst the sixty helpers: some just home from the Australian titles in Perth where they had successfully helped write a new chapter in the competition history of their club. Competing for Noosa then back home helping those children in need ;that is what lifesaving is all about. Over the hill at Sunshine Beach the rebuilding program is quietly moving forward. While in meeting with a club official to help identify original members from years back, one could not help but notice the architectures drawings of what the completed clubhouse will be. To say that they present a modern concept is an understatement. For his vision and enterprise architecture Andrew Bock is to be congratulated. The finished project is sure to be the envy of many clubs on the Queensland coast. I am confident that club sponsors will, with a feeling of pride point at the building and say, "That's my club." Good luck to all involved. To any of you out there who had grandfathers or great uncles involved and have photos of such I am sure the club would be only happy to talk. PLENTY OF PELAGICS OFF SHORE With the drop in evening temperatures the water in the Noosa River is really starting to drop and the winter species are really starting to fire up. Anglers are also targeting these fish with small plastic around structures with the Tewantin harbour and pontoon holding some nice fish. Flathead are in great numbers with good catches still being recorded on the run out tide. For the lure anglers diving 40 to 60mm hard bodies in bright colours like hot pink seem to be the go-to lure for flatties. Lizards have also been taking large prawns, small pilchards and mullet baits. Trevally have been in great numbers and some good size fish have been taken. The current lines at the entrance to Woods Bays is the go-to place. Golden, big eye, giant and kale kale have all been accounted for, in the 50mm to 60mm sizes have been working well on the surface, while soft plastics have worked well down deep. A fast twitchy retrieve off the bottom seems to be the best retrieve. Whiting are still in good numbers with the Dog Beach and the Frying Pan both fishing well, worms, peeled prawns and yabbies are still the go-to bait. With the southerly winds picking up last weekend and the swell not playing the game, most anglers have been fishing in Laguna Bay and the closer reefs. Longtail Tuna and Mac Tuna have been the main targets using noosatoday.com.au

metal slugs in the 20g and under range. The Mackerel have also made a show with some decent sized spotted and Spanish mackerel being caught. Try using a small 3" length of single strand wire and small black rolling swivel above your lure to avoid bite offs. Just around the corner, Sunshine Reef has been holding some cracking trout. Soft plastics have been working with the 7" jerk baits a standout in conjunction with 3/4oz jig heads. Sweetlip have also been in good numbers as well as Maori cod and the odd good snapper starting to show up. Lightly weighted live baits have been working well in a well maintained burly trail. Make sure you don't hit the water without a couple of bait jigs rigged and ready to go. On the beaches; the beaches just to the south of Double Island Point fished well early last week. Dart, tailor, bream and trevally were caught on slugs. The closer gutter have seen some nice whiting and bream and the odd flathead with most fish taken on prawns and worms. A few good tailor have been caught on the eastern beaches on whole pillies and metal slugs. For the rock hoppers the northern side of the Noosa National park afforded some relief from the southerly breezes and sweetlip squire, tailor and even small mackerel were taken. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
