Merlino said. "It's just wonderful making sure we match the great teaching and learning that happens here at Lilydale Heights with the very best facilities." In the past 12 months the college has had a number of consultation meetings with parents, community members and students in determining the priorities for the school. That priority and focus was the sustain-
ability hub. Likewise Upper Yarra and Lilydale High School both identified distinct focuses. "Each of the three schools has identified a particular focus," Mr Merlino said. "For Lilydale heights it's the sustainability centre, at Lilydale High it's Zoology, and at Upper Yarra it's Outdoor Education and outdoor environment." The school infrastructure investment includes a further $11 million to upgrade

The State labor Government has invested $8 million into Lilydale Heights College which will go towards a new gym and sustainability hub.
12377078-CG04-18
In its state budget the Andrews Labor Government has invested almost $50 million across six Secondary Schools in the Yarra Ranges. Of the $50 million, $20 million has been invested in the Lilydale and Upper Yarra Education Plan, which focuses on transforming secondary education in Lilydale and the Upper Yarra area. Transforming education in that area is exactly what the State Labor Government is doing with Lilydale Heights College, Lilydale High School and Upper Yarra Secondary College now set to develop complementary focuses - Zoology, sustainability and outdoor environment - a result of the funding boost. Lilydale Heights College will receive $8 million which will go towards a new sustainable Learning Hub, Gym and create a 'town centre,' where students can meet. Principal at Lilydale Heights College, Rosina Fotia said the funding had been a long time coming and would help replace buildings which were over three decades old. "The school opened in 1989, but it hasn't had significant funding spent on it in that time, lots of pockets, things done here and there ... we're just absolutely thrilled," Ms Fotia said. "We've got a three stage master plan and this will cover stage one which is creating the sustainability hub ... It'll have a strong focus on sustainability, use of renewables, recyclables, energy sources right through the school curriculum and really relevant to our location in Lilydale." The gym also funded as part of the $8million will be available for use by the community and will allow a wider variety of sport to be played on it. "It was state of the art when it was built 30-40-years-ago but now can only be used for training as the run-off is too short," Ms Fotia said. "Now we can have a beautiful state-of-theart facility that we can use and the community can use." After taking a tour of Lilydale Heights college on 2 May, Minister for Education, James Merlino, said that the level of investment into education in the Yarra Ranges was "unprecedented". "In the shire of Yarra Ranges six government secondary schools are getting an upgrade ... it's an unprecedented level of investment," Mr

A view to growth By Derek Schlennstedt Australia's largest social enterprise production nursery, Yarra View Nursery, has taken its first steps into the commercial sector. The Mount Evelyn-based nursery has been awarded a $500,000 contract to supply plants for the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project. The project is part of a State Government initiative that requires three percent of all infrastructure contracts to deliver social benefits alongside the goods or services provided. Those social benefits are certainly being delivered, as Yarra View provides supported employment services for people living with a disability. Of the 110 workers that Yarra View Nursery employs, 90 have either autism, or a physical or intellectual disability. As a result of procuring the contract, General Manager at Knoxbrooke Enterprises, Scott Buckland, said they can continue to respond to the increasing demand for jobs. "It is a fantastic result that allows us the confidence to continue employing more people," Mr Buckland said. "It basically gives us a lot of confidence to be able to employ more people, and offer a lot of our current employees extra hours. "Our mission is to offer work to as many people as we possibly can." With a friendly work environment, and the chance to gain experience, it's no surprise that there is a waiting list for those wanting a job. Sophie McGill, an employee of seven years, said she's been able to learn a lot about horticulture and has worked her way up the gardening ladder. "Just the area of work .. working in horticulture and the people are very nice ... I've changed groups from the dispatch to the fern group, so I get a bit more experience," she said.

Annually, they produce more than one million plants, ranging from ferns and camellias, to fuchsias and bonsai. Mr Buckland said another 100,000 plants for the Rail Project would pose no problem to their working capacity.
"For the rail project, we'll provide over 100,000 plants ... we produce well over one million, so in terms of capacity it's a significant increase," he said. "It's really only 10 per cent of our capacity and we want to do more." Mr Buckland said he was thankful that the John Holland Group who were awarded the contract to construct the Mernda Rail Extension Project chose Yarra View Nursery to supply the plants.
Minibus crashes into tree in Monbulk By Derek Schlennstedt At approximately 7am on 4 May, a minibus carrying 11 passengers lost control and slammed into a tree in Monbulk. Belgrave Police told the Mail that the minibus was travelling along Monbulk Road, towards Monbulk when the driver lost control around a slight bend, opposite Carcoola Road. The driver, a woman in her early 60s, was briefly trapped, requiring the help of CFA crews to free her. Paramedics at the scene assessed all the passengers, though only the driver suffered injuries who was then flown to the Alfred Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Senior Constable, Jordan Kavanagh from Belgrave Police told the Mail that the driver and passengers were "very lucky". "The female driver sustained leg injuries that were non-life threatening and she was air lifted to the Alfred Hospital," Snr Const Kavanagh said.

"She was coming into Monbulk and lost control due to the road surfaces on this corner, over-corrected it and mounted the curb into the tree ... she was very lucky." Snr Const Kavanagh warned motorists to take care and reduce their speed in the wet weather.
"We are coming up to our wet weather season and this is one of the first wet days we've had ... there's been numerous collisions throughout the state already so everyone needs to take care on the roads and drive to the conditions," he said.
An emergency relief centre is just as its name suggests - a place established to provide support and essential needs to persons affected by an emergency. Though, for the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Service Group, servicing the community has become more difficult. As the need increases across the area, so, too, has the difficulty in supporting the community from an aging and cramped building. Now, 20 years after moving into their little ramshackle cramped space next to the Cameo, DRERS has now relocated to the lower section of the Belgrave Community Hub and have the space to flourish. Frank Watson, President of DRERS, reflected on the 20 years of community work and how much it's grown. "I was thinking on the way up here that it all started from a second hand freezer in the workshop under my house, to now a million dollar building ... that's not a bad step," he said. "We're all so pleased to be in this place ... it's a whole different atmosphere, to look at a place like this with the rooms we have, the facilities we have, what more could we ask for and we have the support of the council to thank for that." DRERS offers support to people who are homeless and disadvantaged. That support comes in the form of food, food vouchers, payment of prescriptions, clothing vouchers, and assistance with paying bills, advocacy, referrals and crisis counselling. Unfortunately, the need for support in various ways has increased in recent years and Tania Bevan, manager at DRERS, said in their previous location there just wasn't any "room to grow". "It's light and bright and it's really exciting to be here ... we do miss our little old building however this is so much better," she said. "Hopefully, we can keep doing what we've been doing for the last 20 years but even better; it's more comfortable for us to work in and more comfortable for people to access our service now. "It makes all the jobs we do easier ... we can all work together more closely and make those internal referrals too, if someone comes in for emergency relief and they have eaten for a while we can make them a breakfast to give them a meal straight-away." With a kitchen, large spacious lunch area, numerous offices, showers and two referral offices, the space is a vast improvement on their previous location. "It's a really good place for people to come along and have a meal and feel connected with their community, and of course if they need to access the other services in the building it's all in the one place now which is really good," Ms Bevan said. Yarra Ranges councillor, Mike Clarke, who opened the hub on 21 April, said the new building was a welcome replacement for the ageing, substandard previous accommodation. DRERS is open Monday to Friday 9am12:30pm at the Belgrave Community Hub.

Preservation of platypus The Yarra Valley has a beautiful mix of hills, wineries, rivers, parks and leafy suburbs. The Valley is very old and we are blessed to have such a place to live and raise our families. As I approach my retirement I think more on the importance of preserving the natural environment for the next generation to come. Conservation is part of the core of Liberal Party philosophy. We are charged with protecting and improving what we inherited from those generations before us and it is our duty to pass on that inheritance to the next generation. I think back in our Yarra Valley's history to when the former Kennett Government introduced planning protection on the Valley

to prevent inappropriate development. We can look back even further to the Liberal Premier, Sir Henry Bolte, who in 1967 created the Yellingbo Reserve to protect our state's faunal emblem, the Helmeted Honey Eater. I, myself, began my political career protecting our Valley from excessive development.
I am now becoming extremely concerned about the indiscriminate and thoughtless killing of one of Australia's iconic wildlife, the platypus. Too many platypus are being needlessly drowned in enclosed yabby traps such as opera net traps and drum traps. Use of these nets is illegal in public waterways like creeks and rivers but, unfortunately, are legal for use on private property. The platypus is commonly found in rivers and streams but are regularly found in farm dams too. They are mammals like us and only have a few minutes of air when diving. Once caught in an enclosed yabby net the platypus use up their air very quickly as they frantically
and fruitlessly search for a way out. Checking nets regularly will not prevent their drowning. The local platypus population is small and vulnerable and is especially vulnerable when breeding females get caught and drown in these illegal traps. If the mother dies, its young will starve to death underground. Platypus-safe alternatives, like the hoop and open top lift nets, are inexpensive and recommended for use by fishers as they allow the platypus to escape if trapped. The question needs to be asked, 'Is a feed of yabbies worth the needless drowning death of our most precious and irreplaceable native animal?' The answer is a definite NO!

A group of Dandenong Ranges residents made their message clear at the Great Train Race on Sunday 29 May. While brandishing banners, and with some wearing costumes, members gathered below the Selby Trestle Bridge to call for an end to logging and the creation of a new national park. Member Rob Pergl, from Upwey, said the race is a reminder "that we have it really lucky here in the Dandenongs".

Regardless of what measures are put in place to reduce deaths at sea, the reality is that once our animals are sold to foreign buyers we have absolutely no control over what happens to them. They also learned that Australian sheep from this same abattoir were being illegally sold to private buyers. In 2017, 1,953,918 sheep and 879,958 cattle were exported.

Anger over school ‘snub’ By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School's parents and school council have been left feeling dejected and angered after again missing out on state funds. The Victorian Government unveiled its State Budget on Monday 30 April, with many schools around the Yarra Ranges securing funding windfalls. Special schools around the state, too, have fared relatively well, with the Andrews Government announcing multi-million promises to numerous large facilities, including the Niddrie Campus of the Western Autistic School, the Wangaratta District Specialist School and the Traralgon Education Regeneration Project. However, the Mount Evelyn-based school has missed out, despite comprising almost entirely of portable classrooms. Parent and School Council Vice President, Emily Withers, said the students deserve better. "The school buildings were meant to be temporary structures back when they were built in the 1970s, yet it's still here, as other schools are awarded funds for upgrades," she said. "The only bricks and mortar building we have is the Early Years Centre, which acts as the facade of the school. "I'm angry and something needs to be done. It's not about the politics; it's about what's good for the children ... and this isn't good enough." Ms Withers has three children who attend the school; Tyler, 11, Hayden, 8, and Sarah, 6. All children have an undiagnosed genetic disorder and are non-verbal. "My daughter has 12 years to go at the school and we'd like to see some positive change," she said. "They attend a mainstream school one day
Specialist Teacher Shane Spence with Students Daniel (with the phone) and Alistair. The students celebrated the 1000th episode of their ME TV in 2015. 145626 per week, and there is a big difference between the schools, in terms of facilities and even atmosphere." Before the announcement, a Master Plan had been prepared for the construction of new buildings for the school. The plan includes separate buildings for junior, middle and senior years; as well as playspaces for the students. Shadow Minister for Education, Tim Smith, told the 'Mail' he'll be working with the school in the lead-up to the election, also visiting the site on Monday 7 April. "We're meant to be the education state, but this seems to be merely a slogan," he said. "I'll be meeting with the school and parents. We're in the process of developing election pledges, but I'm keen to have a good look
around the school." Meanwhile, both Ms Withers and School Council president, Jenny Hall, penned a letter to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. "Yarra Ranges SDS ... has been contacting the Minister for Education on a regular basis pleading for substantial capital works funding to address the appalling state of our school buidings," the letter read. "We were promised a paltry $500,000 in mid-2017, which has been used for the development of a master plan, as well as a new build of an administration building. This was the only thing we could build, given our funding limitations. "Our students and their families already endure the indignity of poor financial health, poor personal health and - in the majority of
cases - divorce and split families. 35% of our families are single-parent families in the 2018 school year alone; 47% of our families are in receipt of the Camps, Spots and Excursion funding. "We seek to provide the best possible education to their children, using the latest and proven approaches to special education while simultaneously providing their parents with advice and support." In response to pleas, Monbulk MP and Minister for Education, James Merlino said the Labor Government hadn't ignored the school. "We invested $500,000 in the 2017-18 Victorian Budget for Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School to upgrade and modernise its facilities," Mr Merlino said. "The proposed works include building new general purpose classrooms, administration and learning spaces and a cafe, as well as removing two portables. "In mid-2017, we appointed Hede Architects to work with the school on numerous design stages, including developing the floor plans, elevations and sections." Mr Merlino said the Victorian School Building Authority and the school are determining the finer details such as materials and finishes, the landscape plan and engineering, electrical and structural elements. "It is anticipated that construction will commence in mid-2018, with works being complete by mid-2019," he said. "We are delivering an unprecedented 70 new school projects across Victoria through an investment of more than $3.8 billion as part of the Education State. "This includes the biggest investment in Yarra Ranges schools in the area's history." Mr Merlino said the Government will continue to work with the school on their infrastructure needs and will consider future funding as part of the usual budget processes.

Ready2Go statewide By Derek Schlennstedt
Lisa McKenzie (CFA) Harriet McCallum (Lord Mayors charitable foundation) Fiona Sewell Amanda Lamont (Australian Institute of Disaster Resilience AIDR) Alex White (Gandel Philanthropy) Bridget Tehan ( Victorian Council of Social Services VCOSS) Steve Cameron (Emergency Management Victoria) Wayne Collins and Blythe McLennan (RMIT) make up the Ready2Go state reference group. Much of their work includes ensuring people are keeping cool and well-hydrated in times of high heat, or communicating the severity of a weather event. Ready2Go Team Leader Wayne Collins said it was important to support Victoria's ageing population, especially in rural locations, where transport and the ability to receive informa-
tion is harder. ''We know that supporting vulnerable people to remain living within their communities, and helping them to have strong social connections can be an important part of improving health outcomes and becoming more resilient, and Ready2Go does that," he said. "Our research has demonstrated that Read-
y2Go has been key in helping vulnerable people feel safe, stay safe, feel like part of their community, to become more involved in their community and to live independently." Ready2Go is jointly funded by Gandel Philanthropy and Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, through the Eildon and Anne Foote Trust.

Vulnerable people in urban and rural communities across Victoria are set to benefit from a Cockatoo community based and led initiative. Echo Youth and Family Services is a local welfare based organisation in Emerald, and is behind the community-led program Ready2Go, that supports vulnerable people in times of extreme weather. The Ready2Go disaster resilience program, partners trained volunteers with those who might find themselves in trouble in cases of extreme weather, such as elderly people or those with a disability. Set up following the 2009 bush fires, Echo has since been working in cooperation with Emergency Management Victoria to expand the successful Cockatoo based Ready2Go program with a further ten communities over the next two years. Fiona Sewell Project Co-ordinator said that under the program volunteers check in on those more vulnerable individuals in our communities, ensuring they are safe and well and to help them relocate if necessary. She said that often friendships developed, and would lead to assisting those individuals in other ways too. "It's not just bush fires ... what it means is you still have someone in your local community you've developed a friendship with and that gives these people contact with the world around them too," Ms Sewell said. "Even in the city, for example; high-rise towers and so much concrete in a relatively small area means they don't really don't cool down in the same way ... perhaps they can't afford to be running air con and be able to maintain a safe body temperature. ... So that's where Ready2Go fills the gap." "Someone who's able to check up on the most vulnerable members of our community."

Women In Real Estate
Rebekah and the strong all woman team at OBrien real estate Tecoma pride themselves on professional service, commitment and vast knowledge of the local area. With the team having a wealth of experience we can assist you whatever your real estate needs are. With an understanding from a women’s perspective knowing how stressful it can be when selling or buying we aim to give support, confidence whilst striving for the best possible outcome. From Rebekah and the team at OBrien Tecoma we wish our mothers and your mothers a very Happy Mother’s day.
Having always worked in customer service, my move to real estate was an easy decision. The thing I love the most about working in this industry is meeting people and helping them achieve a great result whether they are buying or selling property. I initially joined Fletchers as a member of the Property Management team, and this gave me a great amount of knowledge and experience working with landlords and their tenants. Most sales agents don’t have this experience dealing with rental properties so if you are a landlord wanting to sell your investment property or an investor needing advice on purchasing a property, I am the agent for you. My other point of difference is my local knowledge and networking skills. I strive for excellence in everything I do. As a life-long Monbulk resident with a love of the hills I love selling the highlights of living in the Dandenong Ranges to potential buyers. If you would like an obligation free market appraisal or simply some advice on the real estate market do not hesitate to call me.

WHERE THERE'S A WOODS, THERE'S A WAY! I knew this woman was the right one for us the moment she walked through the front gate. Her kindly, confident, professional manner was evident as she quietly soaked up her surrounds, as was a hint of her wicked sense of humour.¬ She walked into the emotional minefield that was the sale of our home and tred with both care and efficiency. She was all over it every step of the way, and then some! We felt extremely comfortable and always confident she would get the best outcome and she did not disappoint! From music playing to offerings of cake baking and boot-camp-esque negotiations, Katie gives, and gives, and gives. What a woman. After a thoroughly enjoyable campaign and a successful sale, we're kind of missing having her around maybe it's the accent ...Product review 10/10 HIGHLY recommended.

IMPECCABLE SERVICE AND COMMUNICATION Having Amanda as our Agent made a stressful situation so much easier. Her communication through every step of the process was amazing and we always knew what to expect and what was going on with the sale of our home. Her negotiation skills are second to none and we were blown away with how fantastic the whole experience was. I am quite sure we wouldn't have received such a great outcome if we didn't have Amanda by our side. Thank-you for everything Amanda. Will definitely be recommending Kaye Charles Real Estate to all of our family and friends.

AN AGENT WITH INTEGRITY I would highly recommend Jeanine Presley to sell your property. Jeanine's local market knowledge, integrity, sage advice and unwavering support during the long process of getting my property ready for market, and during the sale process, was invaluable. It didn't matter how many questions I asked (or probably how many times) but Jeanine was always happy to have a full and frank discussion about every and all aspects of market preparation and the selling process. Her information was detailed and there were no glib brush offs. Jeanine's knowledge of the local market and how my property sat within it, along with an understanding of all the features of the property, ensured that it was marketed appropriately by ¬an agent who "got" the property.

ENTERTAINMENT
Behold - a Baba Desi trip By Derek Schlennstedt Who is Baba Desi? The question has long weighed on the minds of those living in the Dandenong ranges. Residents are used to seeing his welcoming smile and unique fashion sense as he makes his way down Belgrave Main Street. Nearly every day of the week he can be seen enjoying a chai in front of Grunge Cafe. Despite his celebrity status - appearances on Billy Connolly and Coxy's Big Break - not much is known of his past, and the beloved icon often avoids talking about himself. Though, now his story is being told in a short 12 minute film titled 'Baba Desi' that will feature at the St Kilda Festival on 19 May. Local Upwey Filmmaker and Director of the movie, Alex Lowes said that having lived in Tecoma since he was he was a boy, he was always fascinated by the man dubbed 'the Belgrave Wizard'. "I guess living in Tecoma since I was very, very little, I've always seen him walking around." "Even when i was just 3-4-years-old, he's always been around, and a lot of people know of him but not much about him," Alex said. In 12 short minutes the film tells the story of Des Bergen who in the Dandenong Ranges has transformed himself into 'Baba Desi' — an activist, local icon and (most notably) a wizard. "I've compiled a bunch of interviews with him, to tell the story," Alex said. "It starts off biographical and tells the story of who he was before he became this wizard figure and how he transformed into that." Though, the movie will feature at the St Kilda Film Festival, Alex said he was keen to bring

Join in for The Greatest Show on Earth By Derek Schlennstedt Inspired by tales of the Holden Brothers Travelling Circus, and as a tribute to them, singer, songwriter and media personality Mark Holden weaves his own colourful history into theirs. With his own history as vivid, fascinating and hilarious as his family's, his new show' Mark Holden's The Greatest Show on Earth' lives up to its name and is a personal ode to the resilience of family, music, tradition, humour and hard work. "This is the sum total of how I see the world and my life in humour ... it's the story of my family circus," Mr Holden said. Of course his family history would include clowns. One-legged trapeze artist Adolphus Holden founded The Holden Brothers Travelling Circus in 1892 and travelled through the bush with his family of 12 on horse-drawn wagons, showing in every village and hamlet from Geelong to Ceduna and back. Little did Adolphus know that his legacy would be passed down from generation to generation and continue to this day. "The Holden's came to the Bellarine Peninsula in 1852, and one branch started this circus in 1892 and that was the family circus," he said. "They travelled by horse and carriage all the way to Ceduna and all the way through NSW . In those times there were just small villages so they had to live off the land ... so it's an exercise of resilience, and that's something I celebrate." "The background is the story of the circus and the family tradition of handing of songs and singing and the culture of that." In his show the fantastical, bygone era of The Holden Brothers Travelling Circus lives on through the marriage of music and stories with classic family circus footage providing a mesmerising backdrop to the tales and songs spun by Mark. The Show will play at Montrose Town Centre on Saturday 12 May from 8pm. To book go to: https://bit.ly/2JQ0DIB mailcommunity.com.au

Annihilates your senses Annihilation Rated MAI5+
Mark Holden''s Greatest Show on Earth will mesmerize audiences at Montrose Town Centre with stories and songs that tell of his family history and the family circus.
Annihilation is a mesmerising science fiction drama directed by Alex Garland. The Shimmer, a slowly-expanding bubble of mutating countryside, forms in the southern United States after a meteorite strike, and Army biologist Lena (Natalie Portman) is part of an all-female team dispatched to investigate the Shimmer. Annihilation is a brooding, supremely atmospheric exploration of tone, setting and character and how they influence each other. Portman portrays Lena with a sombre grace, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, playing squad leader Dr Ventress, delivers one of the most accurate cinematic depictions of a high-functioning sociopath: she isn't cruel, but clearly lacks empathy, and is singleminded in her mission to the point of callousness. Both familiar and unearthly, the Shimmer is a breathtakingly beautiful setting full of macabre imagery and grotesque animal hybrids. One such hybrid provides one of the most chilling horror sequences in years. The entire squad has intriguing, well-developed personalities, and the Shimmer relieves or exacerbates their personal demons. As the team delves deeper into the warped beauty of the Shimmer, their paranoia escalates organically and they come to question their own humanity, and Lena uncovers an unfathomable intelligence behind the Shimmer and learns more about the mysterious disappearance of her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac). Annihilation feels like the kind of film that visionary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky would have made today, and it's available for streaming on Netflix.

Bloods tame favourites By Cameron Hutchison Round 3 was played in damp conditions and as a result some surprise results were the order of the day with some good football and netball witnessed by club's supporters and the Yarra Valley Community. The winners in senior football: Belgrave, Healesville, Monbulk, Upwey Tecoma, Woori Yallock, Gembrook Cockatoo, a draw between Powelltown & Alexandra, Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen. A Grade netball winners: Olinda Ferny Creek, Belgrave, Monbulk Hawks, Woori Yallock, Upwey Tecoma, Kinglake, Yea, Powelltown and Seville. Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 7.16.58 d Olinda Ferny Creek 6.9.45 Healesville have got their second win for the season after surprising the early flag favourites. Healesville had 9 scoring shots to 1 in the first quarter but needed to finish better and as a result of being a bit wasteful in front of goal there lead at qtr time was just 23 points. Olinda clawed their way back in the second, holding Healesville goalless and kicked 2.2 to reduce the margin to 10 points at half-time. Healesville lifted in the third and kicked 2 goals to 1 to have a handy lead of 16 points at three-quarter time. Healesville threw everything at the goals in the last but could only kick 1 goal as they wasted opportunities again kicking 7 behinds. At the end of the day it was still enough at the final siren. Healesville Best: R. Clarke, N. Mende, J. McGrath, L. Daly, J. Nugent (1 goal), D. Plozza Olinda Ferny Creek Best: J. Rankin, D. Wilson, B. Currie, D. Troutman, S. Atkinson, M. Hottes Belgrave 12.17.89 d Warburton-Millgrove 10.13.73 Belgrave have got their first win for the season after coming from behind in the last quarter to snatch it from Warburton. Warburton got off to a great start kicking 7 goals to 4 and went into quartertr time with a 15-point lead. Belgrave found something in the second and outscored Warburton, kicking 3.4 to 1.4 to be only 3 points down at half-time. The third quarter was very quiet from both sides and they both struggled to make any impact on the scoreboard. Neither side could kick a major and the margin was reduced to 2 points in Warburton's favour. Belgrave switched it on in the last and outplayed Warburton kicking 5.4 to 2.4 to come away with a hard earned 4 points. Belgrave Best: B. Raaymakers, J. Toole (1 goal), C. Power, M. Johnson (2 goals), P. Gough, J. McDermott Warburton Millgrove Best: S. Andueza, M. Wappett (1 goal), N. Dodd, B. Ferguson, L. Weir, A. White (3 goals) Monbulk 10.8.68 d Emerald 6.16.52 Monbulk have also got their season started with a come from behind win. Emerald looked like they were on the winning train in the first, kicking 3.5 to 2 behinds and had a lead of 21 points. Monbulk really turned it around in the second, keeping Emerald to just 4 behinds while they kicked 6.1 to be in front at the main break by 12 points. Emerald had more scoring shots than Monbulk in the third, but could not convert and were still behind by 15 points at the last change. The last quarter was tight and neither side could get any momentum going their way. Monbulk had done enough to hang onto the lead and come away with a muchneeded win. Monbulk Best: J. Rak (1 goal), S. Williams (2 goals), P. Barge (1 goal), N. Sargent (1 goal), S. Van Seters, J. Major Emerald Best: Mat Dompietro (1 goal), Michael Dompietro, C. Thomsen, J. O'Sullivan (1 goal), J. Webb, J. Pedder (2 goals) Upwey-Tecoma 13.18.96 d Mt Evelyn 7.11.53 Upwey Tecoma sit one game clear on top of the ladder after another come from behind win for the day. Mt Evelyn looked like they had this game under control in the first as Upwey could not fire a shot and only kicked 3 behinds to 5.4. Mt Evelyn stopped in the second and did not kick a goal while Upwey kicked 4.4 to be only 5 points behind at the main break. Mt Evelyn came out in the third and was just run over by the Tiger Train with Upwey having 9 scoring shots to 1 and took control of the game and led by 19 points at three-quarter time. Upwey continued controlling the game in the last, kicking 6.4 to 2.4 to be number 1 on the mailcommunity.com.au

Matarazzo (1 goal), A. Gibbons, B. Lord, T. Chalkley, D. Watson Woori Yallock 9.8.62 d Wandin 8.12.60 In one of the closest games of the round, Woori Yallock led from the outset and were never headed. They kicked 4.3 to 1.1 in the 1st to hold a 20-point lead at qtr time. The second quarter was a bit of a non-event with only 1 goal being kicked by Wandin reducing the margin to 11 points at half-time. Woori Yallock extended their lead to 16 points at three-quarter time and it looked like they were home, but Wandin had different ideas in the last kicking 5.3 to 3.1 to nearly snatch victory from the Tigers. Yet again indirect kicking cost a win! Woori Yallock Best: R. Monkhorst, R. Allen, J. Matthews, C. French, T. Anderson, L. Boontjes Wandin Best: J. Rowe, P. Hodgett (1 goal), S. Wettenhall (3 goals), R. Ross (1 goal), J. Ladner, P. Bruzzese Division 2 Seniors Football Gembrook-Cockatoo 18.13.121 d Kinglake 11.8.74 Gembrook Cockatoo sit sixth on the ladder but are equal second just behind on percentage with Kinglake just above them after a big win. Gembrook travelled up the mountain and were well-prepared for this game. They came out and kicked 6.2 to 4.1 to take a handy lead of 13 points into the second. They piled on another 6 goals in the third to Kinglake's 2 to be 37 points up at half-time. Kinglake tried in the third but Gembrook had all the answers peppering the goals with 9 scoring shots to 6 to be 54 points up at three-quarter time and in full control. Gembrook was a bit wayward in

the last but really had the game all sewn up; Kinglake kicked 4 straight but it was all too late. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: M. Templeton (5 goals), M. Firrito (3 goals), D. Leversha (1 goal), R. Wilson, D. Volta, B. Jones (2 goals) Kinglake Best: A. Burns (7 goals), B. Hamer, J. Crowe, L. Hannah, A. McLaren, B. Brown Powelltown 12.17.89 drew with Alexandra 12.17.89 Powelltown and Alexandra are yet to register a win, but a draw is better than a loss. Alexandra started the game off well, kicking 4.6 to 3.2 in the first and had a lead of 10 points at quarter time. Powelltown fired up in the second, kicking 4.9 to 3.4 to swing the momentum their way and hold the lead by 1 point at half time. They kicked 4.3 to 3.4 in the third to extend that lead to just six points at three-quarter time. It was a tough last quarter and both sides would be disappointed with their conversion rate in front of goal. Alexandra won the quarter but was unable to swing the game their way in the end. Powelltown Best: T. Ashby (3 goals), G. Sheppard (2 goals), J. Moore, J. Garthwaite (2 goals), D. Rees (3 goals), J. Ashby (3 goals) Alexandra Best: S. Steiner (4 goals), W. Goonan, T. Rouget (1 goal), M. Whitbourn, S. Heveren, S. Woollard (1 goal) Yarra Junction 17.12.114 d Yea 12.14.86 Yea have lost their first game for the season after a come from behind win by Yarra Junction. Tipsters would have picked Yea and things started out that way with Yea taking a 12-point lead into the second quarter. Yarra Junction kicked 4.3 to 1.5 in the second to be in front at the half-time siren by 4 points. The third quarter was a tough slog with neither side really making any headway but the margin was only 1-point in Junction's favour at the
last change. The last quarter was all Junctions with a blistering 6.6 to 2.3 to come away with the upset of the Round for Division 2. Yarra Junction Best: Not provided so their Goal Kickers: S. Morton (6, goals) T. Wheeler (4 goals), B. Clark (2 goals), A. Chandler (2 goals), T. Boxell (1 goal), S. Hall (1 goal), S. Cannon (1 goal) Yea Best: J. Ryan, J. Sandells, X. O'Dwyer, R. Aldous (1 goal), H. Jarvie, D. Evans (1 goal) Yarra Glen 13.8.86 d Seville 10.18.78 Well what a game this was, certainly a game of two halves. Seville jumped out of the gates with a first quarter that should have seen more goals, but they kicked 3.7 to 1.2 and took the lead at qtr time by 17 points. They bombarded the goals in the second with 9 scoring shots to Yarra Glen's 2 and increased their lead to 34 points. The first half of footy was not pretty from either side and if Seville had capitalised in front of goal this game would have been all over bar the shouting. One goal to half time to Yarra Glen is not impressive but 14 behinds from Seville and most of them from set shots is not good footy either. Yarra Glen turned up the tempo in the third, kicking 5 goals straight to Seville's 3.2 and the game was still in Seville's favour by 24 points. The last quarter was exciting for both team's spectators but, in the end, it was Yarra Glen that stormed home, booting 7.4 to 2.2 to come home with a win by 8 points. Yarra Glen Best: A. Smith (1 goal), W. Kristelly, W. Goodwin, J. Marks, B. Ashton (2 goals), R. Smith Seville Best: G. Fraser, T. Baker (3 goals), J. Nolan, S. McDonnell, N. O'Keefe (2 goals), A. Monbulk juniors in battle Monbulk Junior Footy Club battled against Emerald (most teams), with the girls playing Yarra Glenn and Mount Evelyn. While many wins weren't recorded, footy is not about one long battle. It's many short battles, one after another, after another. Kids playing sport and enjoying being a part of a team is what it's all about. Go Hawks Under 9s The opposition started strong with a couple of goals, but Monbulk responded well by sticking on their players and applying pressure to every contest. They shared the ball well and showed plenty of skills. Monbulk v Emerald Z. Koelewyn, R. Koelewyn, L. McConchie, A. Sproat, A. Gray Under 10s Against Emerald, they started off well with all the play early. The game was pretty even for the last three quarters with both sides winning
their share of the ball. Continued improvement and this team are starting to work well together. Monbulk V Emerald A. Jury, G. Silvester, S. Zaccaria, K. Dockery, R. Crutchley Under 11s First, second and third quarter; Monbulk led and scored great goals in the second and held their own ground. Lost concentration on the fourt and went into panic mode. Monbulk 1.5.11 v Emerald 4.3.27 L. Sturt, C. Hooper, F. Lews, J. Dawson Jarrah Under 12s Very physical and tough game against a quality opposition. Opportunity to work on some key areas of improvement at training next week. Monbulk 1.3.9 v Emerald 3.7.25 J. Bateson, J. Koelewyn, A. Teese, L. Smith
Under 14s Blue Against a team that had been struggling to date, it would have been easy for the boys to 'do as they liked'. But it was the opposite. Discipline on show! Monbulk 16.13.109 v 1.1.7 B. LeeWrenn, K. Timms, B. Smith, C.McLean, L.Bright Under 14s Green Really positive start to the game but went down a soldier at quarter time. When play resumed, they were slow to start. Disappointing but will get better going forward. Monbulk 2.0.12 v Emerald 2.4.16 A. Rainey, L. Smith, J.Blandthorn, C. Clift, S.Niclasen Under 14s Girls Was a low-scoring game with the girls working hard to be competitive. Working together at a team and working on their skills learnt at training to keep the opposition from scoring
after their first goal. Monbulk 0.5.5 v Coldstream - Yarra Glenn 1.0.6 A. Hughson, R. Ross, C. Bakker, A. Kostich Under 16s The boys had a big challenge. They were a bit lazy in the first half but worked hard in the second half and finished the game well. Monbulk 14.8.92 v Emerald 4.7.31 A. Green, C. Separovich, D. Goldburg, J. Niclasen, M. Cameron Under 18s Girls The girls were all giving maximum effort. They locked the game down after quarter time and took away Mt Evelyn's run. Will keep improving week to week. Monbulk 1.3.9 v Mt Evelyn 9.10.64 McCormick, Greenwood, S. Turner, L. Koostra
Draw was a fitting result The Olinda-Ferny Creek Junior Football Club is kicking some serious goals, with its girls football program gaining significant interest. So much so, the club is running eight teams for the first time area. In fact, it's so popular they've been forced to split the Under 12s Girls teams into two squads. Interestingly, the recently played each other for the first time - and the result was a draw! Pictured is the Olinda Under 12s Girls Red and White teams.

Reignite the excitement
The all new Holden Commodore. 180382 available as standard across the entire range. And with the range starting at just $35,990 driveaway, it all adds up to phenomenal value for money for our customers." The 2018 Commodore has been the recipient of significant Holden engineering input, designed to ensure the car has the distinctive and engaging feel Australians expect from a Commodore. High-tech driving aides, in addition to years of experience tuning every Commodore from the 1998 VT Commodore onwards, have resulted in Holden's Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, being confi-
dent this is undoubtedly a driver's car. "We've spent a lot of time making sure the new Commodore has the feel and handling you'd expect from a Commodore," Trubiani said. "We've worked on some unique content, including a distinctive Aussie steering tune to give it that familiar feel but it's the adaptive AWD that impresses most. "The adaptive Twinster AWD system gives Commodore traction to a level it's never had before. In the wet, it sticks to the road like glue
and in the dry, it feels like it's running on rails which is great for giving drivers confidence that when they turn the wheel, they know exactly where the car will go and what it will do." The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from Holden dealers nationwide from late February 2018 with customers encouraged to go and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. *Ferntree Gully Holden, 980 Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully Enquiries to (03) 9753 1222

Your grandparents had one, so did your parents, and now it's your turn, as the all-new Holden Commodore is finally launched. And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero. With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing. Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology. The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times. There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers. Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear! Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before. A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day. They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not? Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion. But that's not the only cool bit. To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required. "Commodore has been at the forefront of delivering new driver technology to Australians for the past 40 years and the 2018 Commodore elevates that to the next level," said Holden's Executive Director - Marketing, Mark Harland. "We've got genuine state-of-the-art technology such as the LED Matrix headlights and Adaptive AWD but also a long list of user friendly features such as heated and cooled seats, massage driver's seat and colour headup display.
