AUGIE MARCHES INTO TOWN!
Noosa has a reported 300 community organisations and it's fair to say none would exist without volunteers. Most are probably run entirely by volunteers. Entertainment, education, sports, safety, environment, social, emergency services - you name it and volunteers are involved. Even large organisations like hospitals, aged care centres and schools operate with the help of volunteers. We couldn't survive without them. Yet they receive no pay and just give freely of their time. Why do they do it? Some say they are giving back for the fortunate lives they have enjoyed, some like the friendships they make there, others have an interest in some field. And for some it is a chance to try something new and experience a different area of life. National Volunteers Week will be celebrated in a couple of weeks. To all our volunteers we say thank you. ●
Indie rock supremos Augie March will be performing in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Thursday 24 May and you could be going along for free! Turn to our Live section for more details on the band, but first, get your entry in to this weeks amazing competition for a double pass to see the show. Simply email your name and phone number with the name of their latest album to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au before Tuesday 15th May and you be going along to one incredible gig. ●
NEWS In the 1960s and ’70s, some Australian cricketers were remarked on more for their dress sense and ’sexiness’ rather than their skills with bat or ball. We’ll have a chance to hear all out it at a ’Biggest Morning Tea’ later in May ... see page 11 for the venue and time.
FOCUS ON... MOTHER’S DAY We’ve got some great ways to say ’thanks mum’ in our special Mother’s Day feature, page 30 ... and check out the Look Book (page 31) and The Feed pages (28-29) for further ways to let her know she’s special.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… Noosa is fortunate to have a large contingent of volunteers who help with a vast array of services from organising events and maintaining waterways to lifesaving and other emergency services. Noosa Today spoke to just a couple of the area's army of volunteers. To celebrate National Volunteer Week Noosa's volunteers will be acknowledged with a champagne breakfast on Friday 25 May from 8-9.30am at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.
HAPPY HOSPITAL HELPERS
ALWAYS READY TO HELP Pauline Eglington, SES local controller Noosa Unit After years spent working in the community sector to stem violence against women Pauline Eglington decided when she retired eight or nine years ago to change focus. She moved to Noosa from Brisbane just before a big rain event and rang the State Emergency Services to see if they needed an extra hand. "Can you come and fill sand bags," they said. Since then she has completed training, become group leader, then deputy local controller and nine months ago took on the Noosa Unit local controller role. "All our jobs are in the worst weather ... and dangerous," she said. For Pauline making sure volunteers have their training and competencies up to date helps keep them safe. "We have a great bunch of people who are dedicated," she said. Pauline said the SES are often called out to people in desperate situations. They might have half their roof blown off or a big tree smashed through their house. She said people were always appreciative of their help and the community was very supportive. "People turn up with fresh baked cookies or someone will make them a cake while they're working," she said. "These are the rewards that are the most satisfying - the little things they do." ●
BY MARGARET MACCOLL Anne Smith hospital volunteer A dedicated group of volunteers at Noosa Hospital is making a huge difference to patients and staff though the work and assistance they provide. One of those is Noosa Hospital Volunteers' Association secretary and a member of the Noosa Hospital Community Advisory Committee Anne Smith. Having moved to Noosa from Victoria, Anne saw an advertisement in the paper looking for people to form a volunteer group at the hospital. That was 18 years ago and now the group numbers about 50. Having been a nurse Anne understands the pressures on staff and the apprehension felt by patients. Anne began her training in 1960 at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, then completed midwifery at the Royal Women's Hospital. She retired in 1997 when she was Director of Nursing at Numurkah Hospital. Nowadays her four-hour voluntary shifts are spent escorting patients to various departments, helping sort paperwork, taking around a library trolley, arranging flowers or just having a chat with the patients. "We understand that sometimes
Noosa Hospital''s Volunteers Association secretary Anne Smith with president Georgina Milligan. being in hospital, especially the oncology or renal treatment sections, can be rather daunting, so we take pleasure in being able to sit with patients and have a chat," she said. "I can appreciate how important it is to help with areas like paperwork to allow the nurses more time with the patients, which is always valuable."
An extra group of volunteers man the patient buggy transport; a courtesy buggy to take patients to and from the main entrance and their cars. For volunteers like Anne the rewards are many. "I'm still here. I'm still smiling so it can't be too bad," she said. ●
WEEDING CARES FOR BUSH BY MARGARET MACCOLL A group of dedicated volunteer bushland carers from Heritage Park Bushland Care braved the rain on Monday to hold a Community Education event beside the Noosa River. Organiser volunteer Joan Heavey said other groups including Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) came to the event which was held as part of a commitment to a State Government Community Sustainability Action grant. More than 50 people came along to learn more about weeds in the area and hear from researcher Joel Fostin on the effects of the leaf-hopper bug on
Pandanus. The grant has enabled the group to employ a contractor to help rid Heritage Park which is bordered by Golf Course Drive, Noosa-Cooroy Road and Griffith Avenue of the weed Singapore Daisy and purchase native plants and tools. Joan has volunteered with the bushland carers for the past 15 years and seen the changes along Wooroi Creek from the removal of weeds. Joan said many in the group like her found weeding became addictive. "I used to spend five mornings a week up there," she said. "Once you get started it's very difficult to stop." ●

COVER STORY
FREE FROM SLAVERY BY MARGARET MACCOLL n the tourist town of Siem Reap, the gateway to the ruins of Angkor Watt temple in Cambodia, young girls as young as six or seven are being trafficked for sex. A holiday spent volunteering in Cambodia in 2009 at an aftercare centre where girls rescued from sex trafficking go to heal has forever changed the life of Sunrise Beach primary school teacher Nicky Mih. The experience led Nicky to set up Free to Shine and as director she spends her time between Cambodia helping to prevent girls becoming sex slaves and raising funds for the project in Australia. Free to Shine works to prevent girls falling victim to trafficking by keeping them in school. It’s hard to believe a family will sell their daughter into sex slavery. Nicky said sometimes desperate families do but often they are tricked into it. A lack of education and skills leads to unemployment and poverty. In Cambodia, the high rate of unemployment, lack of access to medical facilities and basic care and housing, combined with high levels of poverty and uneducated workers, are contributing factors to trafficking. Traffickers prey on vulnerable individuals and on their desperation for a better life. “Some people have inadequate shelter, food and water. A child will drop out of school to help out. Traffickers target them with a fake job offer,” Nicky said.

When girls are rescued the traffickers don’t go without, they just go out to a rural village and get another girl. Sex slavery and family violence are taboo subjects. Nicky said there was a high rate of family violence in communities despite them living in cramped and open conditions where little is unseen.

Happy and free from slavery.
Cambodian girls in school are kept safe from sex slavery.
Nicky Mih speaks to some Cambodian girls about staying in school.
Education is giving girls jobs and freedom from slavery. “People have learnt not to intervene. They learnt that through the Khmer Rouge. They learnt not to speak about these things,” she said. Nicky said girls who have been sex slaves are considered “a bad and dirty girl.” Men are not seen in the same way. Men are like gold, even if dropped in the dirt they don’t stain, she said. Asian men are the primary clients of sex slaves and international sex tourists are also clients. The rescued women struggle to resume a normal life. Some trafficked girls go home and pretend they were working in a different province with an aunt. No one talks about it. “How well they reintegrate back into the community depends on them learning a skill to earn a living,” Nicky said. During her time as a volunteer Nicky asked sex slave survivors how she could help them. “They said we’re OK, we’ve been rescued,” she said. “They wanted no other girl to go through the horrors they’d been through. They asked me to go out into the rural villages, find the girls who weren’t in school, and protect them. They told me that if these young girls were in school they would not be trafficked.” The International Labour Organisation says that “getting girls into schools and keeping them there is vital to reducing their vulnerability to trafficking.” UNESCO reports that there are 34,780 female children and 64,431 adolescent girls
noosatoday.com.au
in Cambodia who should be in school but are not. Nicky said girls in school are physically protected by sitting in the classroom and mentally by becoming more self-assured and empowered through their academic achievements. Evidence suggests that even keeping children in school until age 16 dramatically reduces their likelihood of being trafficked, and will significantly improve their standard of living, she said. Nicky said the Cambodian government was taking action to reduce sex slavery. Cambodia is ranked on the Tier 2 Watch List on the international Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report created by the United States. The rank indicates the number of victims of severe trafficking is significant and has committed to making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance. Over the past decade the Cambodian government has set up a number of taskforces to combat human trafficking and brought into force a new law on the “Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation” which criminalized all forms of trafficking. In 2016 Cambodia ratified the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children. And the Commune Council for Women and Children has assigned a woman in every village whose job it is to look out for women and children. Nicky said when she first visited Siem Reap brothels were obvious but the police clamp down has sent the industry and sex
slavery underground, now working through cafes, hotels and massage parlours. A number of non-government organisations, (NGOs) including the United Nation’s UNICEP and UN Women, some in partnership with the police force, are working in Cambodia to help rescue sex slaves and assist their recovery and reintegration as well as in the areas of law enforcement, justice and child affairs. Nicky said keeping girls in school was a gap in the system Free to Shine is helping to fill. The Free to Shine team works with local authorities and communities to reach the most at-risk rural girls, reducing their vulnerability to trafficking by improving their access to education and providing them with social work support. Thanks to a donation from Gold Coast company Synergy Fitness Nicky is able to work full time for Free to Shine. While she is back on the Sunshine Coast she aims to enlist the support of the community. She hopes people might support the project to keep girls in school and it doesn’t have to be a large amount. Just $1.50 will keep a girl safe in school for a day, she said. Last year Free to Shine established a Shine and Dine event to raise awareness through participating cafes and restaurants across Melbourne and funds from donations. The event will be held in Noosa for the first time this year in July. To be involved visit https:// www.freetoshine.org/shineanddine2018/ or phone 0422 714 066. ●

ABATTOIR PLAN BUTCHERED BY JOHN WOOD In response to Noosa MP Bolton's "Mis or Dis Information" story in the Noosa Today, Sandy's explanation of the situation is very welcomed. Sandy has always strived for transparency and community inclusiveness. What's disappointing is the current lack of community consultation about the Eumundi Slaughterhouse proposal. Sandy has shown great courage admitting Noosa Council's grant includes "options for processing"; something Noosa Council has vehemently denied. The past operations as Sandy comments as a "small boutique facility" with processing approval of 100 cattle equivalent per week (5,000 annually) does not reflect the proposed commercial operations. This yearling beef and abattoir proposal will likely far exceed these numbers never seen before in Eumundi as commercial operations intensify. A 2015 Country Noosa Action Plan document states, "a regional herd of about 20,000 head can be sufficient to make an abattoir viable and modelling suggest this could be easily achieved." In the same document it identifies a growth option scenario for "100% increase on current grazed land", equating to over 40,000 head per year! Make no mistake as cattle grazing intensifies so will processing at Eumundi, negatively impacting on the community. In reference to Sandy's comment of Noosa beef producers', "needs for ethical slaughtering of their animals", the same
2015 document mentions the lack of a local "Halal" accredited facility producers, stating a problem of not being able "to have animals slaughtered under Halal accreditation in one local abattoir and slaughtering of pigs, sheep and goats." Many residents would find this practice of slaughter unethical and inhumane but is legal under religious exemption from animal welfare laws. Sandy commented in all her honesty that she was unaware of any previous "negative lobbying" at the Eumundi Slaughteryards; however, the slaughterhouse's previous operations have impacted on adjacent neighbours. Slaughterhouses are categorised as a high impact and noxious industry. Neighbours have shared stories of unpleasant odours and sounds coming from the property. One neighbour shared a story about escaped pigs cornered and shot on their property by slaughterhouse workers. We should buy local produce and support our farmers, but that doesn't mean we must agree with all of their actions. Is this proposal the 'sustainable' model it's being promoted as? Doubtful. As part of their supply chain, Country Noosa beef producers have met with Chinese investors with the prospect of exporting local meat to fulfill a growing Chinese consumer class. Food miles? Grow it local; sell it local? It's a free market and producers have the right to sell to the highest bidder, but is this truly sustainable and should Noosa ratepayers be funding this project? Ironically, Noosa beef producers want
an abattoir; Noosa residents do not. Noosa Council wants to diversify its economy, but in this instance, must rely on Sunshine Coast Council to do so. Sadly, what is at the centre of this slaughterhouse debacle is social injustice. Some of the anti-Cooroy Broiler Farm campaigners who are meat producers are pushing for this Eumundi slaughterhouse. Double standard? Shameful act? Noosa ratepayers are funding a proposal outside its borders, and at the same time, inflicting upon the Eumundi community a proposal that does not meet today's acceptable standards and minimum regulatory requirements. Like some Noosa Councillors, Sandy seems to allude that this Eumundi proposal is a Sunshine Coast Council problem; it's not in Noosa Shire. But it is a Noosa Council PR problem. To date, over 2,200 QLD residents have signed the Parliamentary e-petition against the proposal; several hundred Sunshine Coast residents have signed a SC Council paper petition and anti-abattoir postcards are being sent to SC and Noosa councillors and state MPs. A professionally made video, critical of Noosa Council and this proposal, is being shared on social media. A question to be asked, is Noosa Council squandering ratepayers money and at the same time tarnishing its image. ● John Wood Former VP, Noosa Community Biosphere Association Residents Against the SlaughterHouse
WORK NEEDED TO KEEP NOOSA SOUND SAFE Council survey work has found the north facing area of Dog Beach which was created to protect Hays Island, now known as Noosa Sound, is eroding at a rate of 27,000 cubic metres per year. Council papers say the future rate of erosion is difficult to predict but what is certain is "that the Council would need to intervene to ensure that no break through would occur to protect the overall purpose of the Noosa Spit, i.e. protecting Hayes Island (Noosa Sound)". Council officers have applied for grant funding under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program to assist in the funding of a Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP), Council says implementing a SEMP will require "coastal data collection, river and near shore bathymetry collection,
creation of a numerical model that can accurately model sediment transport followed by a remediation options analysis" Sand nourishment is recommeneded as a remediation option in the short term. Council officers also held meetings last July with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP) to discuss the possibility of recommencing dredging and beach nourishment within the Noosa Spit area. A dredge permit for the area expired in May 2009. Council said recommencement of dredging was provisionally supported by DEHP and if a permit application was successful Noosa Council would be able to dredge and place up to 100,000sqm of sand per year. Future action on the Dog Beach is on the agenda of current council meetings. ●

COUNCIL COMPLAINT REJECTED Queensland Parliament on 2 May refused to accept a complaint from Noosa Council that an e-petition titled 'Stop the Noosa Slaughterhouse and Veal Industry' contained inaccurate facts. The petition was posted to the Parliament's petitions webpage on 9 March. Council complained about a fact in the petition saying Council had awarded a grant to Country Noosa to reopen the Eumundi slaughterhouse to create "a bird to beast abattoir" while developing a local veal industry. The Speaker ruled that after examining the evidence he determined "the grant will go towards research regarding a yearling beef industry and that part of that project is to introduce alternative funding for and reopening an existing abattoir at Eumundi" ●
COLOURFUL ART INSPIRING MINDS Noosa Rotary Club recently donated artworks by the late artist Peter Heuscher to the University of the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience - Thompson Institute after real estate agent Noosa Rotary Club President Tess Alexandroff noticed the paintings during the sale of his estate. “His wife Stefani was not going to take all of his paintings with her, so I offered to ensure they found a good home,” she said. “She said Peter would be so proud to know his works would end up in an institute like this.” Staff were invited to select paintings that resonated with them the most for their offices or work areas, and the pieces were professionally hung by art gallery staff. Institute Director Professor Jim Lagopoulos said the works had brightened the walls immensely, as they had remained bare since the institute was provided to USC in 2015 by philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson. “We have grown a lot since then and due to the nature of mental health work, creating a bright and welcoming environment here makes all the difference,” he said. “It’s a stunning gift that will be well appreciated for years to come.” ●

WHAT COST FOR TOURISM BY MARGARET MACCOLL Introducing National Park entry fees to Noosa was a suggestion made by Noosa Parks Association's forum speaker Tony Groom that was met with wide support from guests last Friday. Tony Groom was born at Binna Burra, won a Churchill Fellowship to study National Parks around the world in 1973 and has been involved with them ever since. Tony who now runs International Park Tours said there were few national parks that did not charge entry fees and invest the funds in the park's upkeep. Queensland is one of the few places in Australia and the world where the entry to national parks is free to individuals, although tour groups are charged a fee, he said. Tony said National Parks were important for preserving the world's fauna and flora, their habitats and their gene pools. Increasingly they are being regarded as valuable spiritual resources where people can escape to from their hectic urban lives to relax and recuperate, he said. Tony also touched in his talk on the interest in introducing eco-tourism facilities into National Parks saying the idea was being received with a mix of excitement and apprehension. He said the issue was maintaining and preserving the parks and providing for visits. ●
WATCH OUT FOR WHALES The State Government has issued an alert to keep a look out for whales as the season begins but be warned fines can be incurred for getting too close to the majestic mammals. About 33,000 humpbacks are expected to be heading north along the coast for their breeding season on the Great Barrier Reef. The rules include a 300m exclusion zone for jet skiers and 100m for other vessels but only three boats at a time at that distance and speed limits within the zone are 6 knots. White whales have extra provisions with an exemption area for boats of 500m and 610m for aircraft. ●
RURAL BREAK-INS
Tony Groom at NPA Friday forum.
Police are appealing for public assistance following a number of break-ins and thefts from rural properties in Amamoor Creek over three months. Initial investigations indicate three properties were targeted between Thursday, March 29 and Thursday, May 3 resulting in thousands of dollars’ worth of power tools, equipment and machinery stolen from dwellings and sheds. Property stolen includes chainsaws, leaf blowers, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), water pumps, generators and solar equipment. It is believed the thieves are using bolt cutters or a similar type of tool to cut through locks to gain entry to the properties during both day and night. Investigations are continuing with the review of CCTV footage, suspect vehicles and the sighting of two people seen trespassing on the properties during this time. Police are asking for anyone with information about the recent incidents to contact them. ●

CRAFT BREWERS GAIN TAX BENEFITS Craft brewers and distillers will no longer pay additional tax, allowing them to compete on fairer terms with large beverage companies. Currently draught beer sold in kegs exceeding 48 litres is taxed at lower rates compared with beer sold in smaller kegs. Extending the concessional draught beer excise rates to kegs of 8 litres or more will level the playing field for craft brewers, which typically use smaller sized kegs, to distribute their beer to pubs, clubs and restaurants. The alcohol excise refund scheme cap will increase from $30,000 a year to $100,000, from 1 July 2019 for all brewers and distillers. ●
BY MARGARET MACCOLL A captivating and entertaining speaker, former Australian cricketer Patsy Fayne of Noosaville will have the audience at Noosa's Biggest Morning Tea enthralled by tales of her experiences playing for Australia. There was no political correctness when Patsy played cricket from 1968 to 1976. Instead of taking their cricket skills seriously the media focus was well and truly on the players' dress and sexual attraction. Photos caught the women in the dressing sheds or snapped their underwear while they bowled. "There was a small group of women playing in those days," she said. "You just played for the love of the game." At the time Patsy worked as a physical education teacher. In order to compete her workplace gave her leave without pay and she was lucky, some girls lost their jobs. Despite the financial burden of having to pay their own way and the media taunts there were plenty of good times. She travelled with the team, met world leaders and said the experience made an impression on her life. Patsy will speak at the Biggest Morning Tea to raise money to support research for a cure for cancer, a disease which has touched her life and many others. Patsy's mother died from ovarian

To celebrate Heart Week Noosa Council sponsored 50 volunteers from local community groups to receive first aid training. Local groups from sports to arts have signed up for the training which was facilitated by Coast Guard trainer Jon Symonds and conducted at the Coast Guard’s new training facility. A council spokeswoman said community group members come in to contact with lots of people each week so ensuring they have the skills to help out in an emergency was an important investment by Council. ●

JUMPING ONTO THE WORLD STAGE Cooroy showjumper, Billy Raymont can hold his head up high following his fabulous performance in his World Cup bid against the very best in the world. Riding a warmblood horse from Western Australia, belonging to the Tucker Family, Oaks Redwood, known as Bas, Billy won the last two World Cup Qualifiers on him in Adelaide and Sydney in 2017 makiing him a clear winner of the Pacific League World Cup Series, and qualified him and second place getter, Jamie Kermond, to go to the World Cup Finals in Paris. The bigger leagues in Europe and the US sent six to ten riders for this event. They comprised highly experienced and successful riders, most of whom ranked in the top 50 in the world. Ranked at number 502, because of his Australian and New Zealand wins, Billy began his campaign by competing against these riders in Hong Kong, The Netherlands and Germany. Both he and Jamie were the only two 'wildcard' entries to the Hong Kong Masters - riders ranked much lower, but of unknown capacity, because they were not competing in top world competitions. Billy won prize money in all but one of the six classes that he entered gaining two thirds, one fifth, a seventh and an eighth with prize money awarded to 12th place. Under Billy's careful guidance, Bas quickly stepped up to top international level. "He is a very solid horse," Billy said. "He
is the same every day. He takes everything in his stride. He ate and drank on the flight to Hong Kong, and again to Europe. He's never missed a beat. He never looked tired once." Billy carefully selected classes to prepare him for the 1.60m World Cup Classes. In Paris in March, in the Herm¨¦s International Show, he did his first 1.60m

track, having only one rail down. Many of the top ranked riders did considerably worse than this. They then went back to their base in Holland for further training, and went to Paris again in April for the World Cup Finals. Billy rode him cautiously on the first day, for a slow time and one rail down.
Considering that the Western European League's winner Kevin Straut, had three rails down on this tough track, it was a marvellous effort. At the end of the next qualifier, with two rails down, Billy was placed 32nd missing the final round by two places but he qualifying to compete in the second round Grand Prix. The 47 entries in the Grand Prix read like a Who's Who of the world's top riders. Bas and Billy did a lovely clear qualifying round, with one time fault, putting them in the top 20 who were eligible to go on to the second round. In this round, against the clock, they pulled one rail and had one time fault. Some of the biggest names in the game crashed and burned in this round, pulling rails and putting themsleves out of contention for the 12 prize-winning places. Billy and Bas came in 9th, winning a cool $A5,000 for this terrific end to their Paris World Cup Show campaign. Showjumping is a very expensive sport, and, aside from Billy's sponsors, the Tinknel and Hanslow families got together a fundraising effort that raised over $10,000 to aid Billy's overseas campaign. With the cost of horse transport to Europe alone costing $40,000, and expensive board and entries to Europe's biggest shows, this is a great help in supporting what has been a wonderful first international tour for Australia's best onshore show jumper. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT …
WHEN A WALKWAY CROSSES THE ROAD It's a slower drive along Park Road to the Noosa National Park due to the half road closures resulting from the boardwalk construction but that didn't deter people from taking it over the long weekend.Once there motorists soon find out the number of carparks has reduced as a result of the roadworks and they will probably need to make the trip back to Hasting Street. For those who haven't yet found it a concrete pathway is now available for walkers across the road from the boardwalk. The boardwalk from Little Cove to the Noosa National Park entrance is being constructed by Hutchinson Constructions who have until the Christmas holidays to complete the project. Also under construction is the boardwalk in front of the Noosa Surf Club and the clubhouse is undergoing renovations. ●

Musician Harii Bandhu takes class.
REAL LIFE CLASS FOR MUSIC Some very excited Year 4 students at Sunshine Beach State School recently shelved their books to spend time with local musician Harii Bandhu. The informative session was not only a time to sing but also a rare opportunity for the children to discover what goes into producing music. From the effects pedals to the amps, the Ipad to the leads and from the musician to the audience, Harii discussed and demonstrated many tools of the trade for a musician. "The children really got into it and it was so good to see their reactions," Harii said. "I just love seeing kids really benefit from music and they harmonised so well."
The children listened to songs using different instruments from many genres and every foot was tapping. Singing in rounds and dancing to live music was a sensational opportunity to engage the students in fun learning activities while catering for learning in all areas of the curriculum. Teacher Warren Blandford said the class was a good chance for the children to experience close up and personal not only how great music can be produced, but also how music can change lives. "Harii's passion was very inspiring," he said. One student summed up students reaction saying "Best lesson ever Mr B". ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE
RON LANE
PRIDE OF THE LION HEARTS OF NOOSA To call the two Noosa ladies u/19 boat crews, the Lion Hearts of Noosa could be, according to some people a gross understatement. Young in years, small in body and for the majority still in high school these two crews are affectionately known as the Scrub Turkeys and the Spangled Drongos. For these young girls rowing for the Noosa Heads SLSC, aged 16 and 17 the fact that they have chosen perhaps the toughest physically event in Australian Surf Life Saving Competition is of no concern to them. The results achieved during this season show us that our young daughters by their performance have definitely earned the respect of all involved within the boat fraternity of Australia; from the officials the junior crews and right through to the masters. They all say well done girls. First we look at the Scrub Turkeys. Rowing under this unusual banner we have Lucy-Grace Cullen, Amelia Frye, Abbey Whittaker, Grace Floyd and sweep/coach David Tomba. Their club mates rowing as the Spangled Drongos are; Zali Kerr, Tayla Fox, Sinead Hayes, Josie Stephenson and sweep/coach Mick Gardner. For this season the Scrub Turkeys highlights were; 3rd NAVY ASRL (Australian Surf Rowers League) Championships of Australia and 2nd in both the state and national titles. The ASRL Championships with 300 crews from all over Australia taking part is considered the major event of the season. With the Spangled Drongos their results
Scrub Turkeys paddle out. were; 1st Coolum Beach, 2nd at Manly, Freshwater and the Pacific Palms, Battle of the Boats, all major open carnivals. Then finally in the NAVY ASRL Championship of Australia, they finished in 1st place. The ASRL Championship results were for Noosa unique in two ways. First with two crews in the u/19 womans final they finished an incredible 1st and 3rd and perhaps most important they did so in surf so big that officials and boat sweeps met to decide would they continue or stop.
Sweep David Tomba said, "On the morning of the final the crews took one look and asked in amazement, are we rowing in that? Then someone said this is what we do so let's go." With the competition season now over the ASRL have released their National Rankings for the year. The Scrub Turkeys and the Spangled Drongos are rated second and third respectfully in Australia. Proud to say these 16 and 17yr high school girls-- are Our People. â—?
Spangled Drongos push off.

TRANSPORT IS NUMBER ONE
SLOW DOWN
Advocating for innovative transport solutions has kept the chamber of commerce busy last year and we will continue our drive for a more effective and efficient means of moving people around our shire. Back in January 2017 we publicly voiced our concern around demonising the ‘daytripper’ as the cause of Noosa transport problems. We believe that the problem has many causes and the solution is to develop a more integrated system of transport that encourages innovative approaches to move people around. Accordingly, the Chamber led the cause to reshape the Draft Noosa Transport Strategy and specifically remove the sections that prioritised the parking needs of workers over customers. Our voice has been extended through affiliations with local Noosa businesses, the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance and Sunshine Coast Business Council. We also had an opportunity to advocate for improved transport infrastructure through Regional Development Australia forums that have included delegated representatives and senior staffers from all levels of government. We have presented specific innovative solutions for consideration such as an electric linear ferry service. The service and its novel funding model have been shared locally through forums as well as internationally as a research paper and presentation to the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society. The transport problems we face are not ours alone and other regions in Australia and across the globe are suffering from human mobility problems. Queenstown, New Zealand is one such example where we have an ongoing relationship with the councillor responsible for transport infrastructure. Queenstown has employed a strategy to drastically reduce car parking and the price of public transport. We will continue to monitor the roll-out of this strategy with interest in how the changes influence the economic development of Queenstown. Ultimately, we believe that there are innovative solutions to Noosa transport woes. It is the role of our chamber to make sure that decision-makers are aware of these possibilities and that future policies are progressive and do not unduly hinder business opportunities. Steven Boyd, President - CCIQ Noosa

LENSCAPE
This little guy found himself a friend. Leonie Gaffel snapped this in the car park of the Noosa Marina last week. Please send your wildlife, lifestyle or landscape photos to "Lenscape" at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au letter last week that there would be no abattoir built in Noosa, much to the relief of her constituents, no doubt. The article begs the question, however, why are SCC residents expected to endure the traffic, noise, smell, pollution of our waterways, and loss of amenity so Noosa can diversify its economy, and a small group of Noosa beef producers can profit? The site does have a licence to operate, but it was issued in the 1980s and is approved for a much smaller scale than Country Noosa is proposing. I imagine there have been no complaints in recent times about the slaughterhouse because it has not been in operation for over six years, and in the years prior operations were in steep decline. Like the rest of the coast, the local area has grown with many homes and an increased population and rural industry is no longer appropriate on the site. The existing facility is located in direct proximity to homes, 850 metres from a school, 350 metres from a cafe, and directly across the street from a wildlife rescue centre. If Noosa Council, Country Noosa and Noosa beef producers want a local abbattoir, then they can find a site within Noosa Shire for this noxious industry, and deal with its negative impacts and the “inbox outrage" that will surely ensue.
I was devastated to hear a Victorian man had been killed while staying in Noosaville. Alive one minute, decides to go for a walk, dead the next. The cars are going way too fast along Hilton Terrace and when that roundabout goes in there Hilton-Ernest there’s going to be even more traffic. So as the police remind us to take care that’s all very well but obviously not going to help when one thought they were safe while crossing on a pedestrian crossing but not so. You can’t take it for granted that a driver has seen you enter or are on a pedestrian crossing. There must be red stop lights installed there to make the driver aware that he/she has to slow down and be prepared to stop safely before they can so easily take a life. What’s the cost of a life? Obviously not a lot these days. A most tragic story, with the increase now of people, cars and speed, it’s bound to happen again. Something must be done to address the very dangerous problem that now exists in the area. Maxine Poury-Thomas, Noosaville
ENOUGH OF THE SLASH AND BURN
S. E. Stewart, Doonan
FAMILIES NEED COMMUNITY HELP There are two very important concepts that define the existence of a peaceful society. Primary and secondary socialisation mechanisms. The family and the community. It is so thought and in fact has empirical basis, that if one or the other fails without the the one that doesn’t fail being able to take up the slack, social problems arise and multiply like weeds. Economically a lot of Australian families are under incredible pressure (so it seems year after year) and this can lead to fracturing. What’s there to pick up the pieces, hmmm? Agencies that profit from such fracturing are very prominent. Centrelink and the job agencies (they profit from unemployment). Privately run prisons (profit from a lot of small scale fracturing). I have seen a well to do, hard working, nice, caring family throw their eldest son into the fire without a care in the world. Using judgementalism and nothing else. It sickens me that once a family fractures there is no human family to help pick up the pieces. Dylan White, Noosa
It is really disappointing and shameful to see the outcry about the recent legislation to ban land clearing. Surely these primitives have risen above the flat earth and stone age to see the results of thousands of years of slash and burn. There is enough desert land already covering the earth through these primitive methods assisting climate change. The Sahara shows signs it was once populated and later its northern areas supplied Rome with wheat. Any land deforested and stripped of ground-cover allows the sun to bake it dry to desert. There must be a balance of ground cover to keep the soil arable. Australia is one of the last countries to allow slash and burn. The clearing of land in Western Australia for wheat to vast saltpans ought to be proof enough. Most of Queensland is vulnerable, especially in the enormous semi-desert areas of the west. There is at the moment a righteous outcry about the shipping of live animals overseas. What about those farmers who can’t always afford to feed their sheep or cattle and they die equally horrible deaths of thirst and starvation? Should they not be banned from ever farming and heavily punished? Len Chiles, Noosaville

I refer to the recent issue regarding the dramatic increase in the number of the new type of dog waste bags being used. Perhaps it's a simple matter of mathematics. The new bags are much bulkier than the old bags. In fact they are 2.5 times the weight of the old bags, eg the new bags weigh five grams each compared to two grams for the old bags. I don’t know how many bags the dispensers hold but if you assume that the capacity was for 200 of the old bags, then the capacity for the new bags would only be around 80. Is it possible that people are using the same number of bags as previously but that the dispensers need filling more frequently as they hold less than half the number of the old bags? THE WAIT FOR AUGIE IS WELL WORTH IT BY HOLLIE HARRIS Indie rock supremos Augie March will be performing in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Thursday 24 May as part of the launch tour for the long-awaited new album 'Bootikins' - and supported by Rowena Wise. Augie March songwriter and vocalist Glenn Richards says of their upcoming tour, "Augie March set out on the road through May in support of our new album, for our first run in donkeys yonks. Expect all the new but a good dose of the old from our sprawling back catalogue." The band's sixth studio album, noosatoday.com.au
'Bootikins' was recorded in Melbourne and Hobart and produced by their dear friend, the legendary Tony Cohen, before his passing. Richards says: "Tony Cohen wanted to make good on a promise to himself that he'd one day do something with our band. This was news, amazing news, to us, and it still amazes me that we got a chance to work with the man. The moments are ours and we will cherish them, it only suffices to say he got us feeling like; and playing like a real band again after a long interim, and we made some very good music together. I know he felt very much like himself in there and had a blast".
Following Tony's passing, a final track was recorded with Cohen's good friend John Olson at the helm, with the band, Robin Mai and Paul McKercher mixing the record between them. Augie March's distinctive musical style is directed by Richards. His lyrics often draw critical acclaim for their poetic style, with band's music is described as intricate, lush, and dense, acting as a backdrop for Richards' complex and poetic vocals. It has been said of Augie March that had they made normal length records instead of the kind that take three days in real time to finish, they'd rival the Stones for output. Maybe, maybe
not, but one thing is for sure, they've made some long albums. See them virtually match the vitality and swagger of the present day Stones in Eumundi! TICKETS: Pre-sale $35 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $40 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm Imperial Hotel Courtesy Bus The Imperial Hotel's FREE courtesy bus operates Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm + Sundays from 2pm travelling to Eumundi, Belli Park, Cooroy, Doonan, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, and Verrierdale. Missy Higgins - Solastalgia
Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate
Life Of The Party
Although there's quite a bit of thematic doom and gloom on this record, expect plenty of highs, too. A departure into the electro fringe, this is Missy Higgins as far away from organic/acoustic pop as she has ever ventured, and it's well worth the journey. Working back from the end and the fully wobby synth and vox treatment of The Old Star is just great fun but the bold standout is 49 Candles, a protest/ lament about the Orlando hate shootings in 2016 where 49 young people were gunned down in an attack on the LGBTQIA+ community. As she sings, "All our voices, where do they go?" backed by well-placed rolling (military, even) drums, the message hits. Mournful and a little lost, there's a definitive and rightful anger underpinning here too. ●
Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage. Based on one of America's most notorious real-life scandals - in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country Wingate's riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. ●
Just in time for Mothers Day, Life of the Party hits cinemas 10 May, so take mum along for this side splitting chick flick. When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college...landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who's not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna-now Dee Rock-embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected. Directed by Ben Falcone ('The Boss', 'Tammy') Starring Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Molly Gordon, Julie Bowen, Jacki Weaver, Gillian Jacobs, Debby Ryan, Matt Walsh, Chris Parnell, Christina Aguilera. Written by Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone. Rating: M ●

Plan some extra special love for the mums in your life this year with a few of these great ideas -Make her homemade gift cards Get your little artists to make mom gift cards with small promises. Let your kids come up with their own ideas. Here are some ideas to get you started: This card is good for help with the laundry. Redeem this card for help in your garden. Hand me this card and I will dry the dishes. Give me this card and I will help clean up a room. Show me this card for a big smile, cuddle and laugh from me. Schedule a photo shoot Go DIY or professional. Select a beautiful park, arboretum or spot in
nature and capture the family for a memory that lasts. Pack a picnic lunch and soak up some sun to make the day even more special. Write letters Handwritten letters are a rarity these days. Have everyone in the family sit down and write a heartfelt letter to mom. Share a favorite memory, what you love best about her or why mom is so special. If you really want to go over the top, have each family member read the letter to mom while she's enjoying breakfast in bed. Plan an unforgettable experience What has your wife (or mother) always wanted to do but never has? Plan it. Even if it doesn't happen on Mother's Day, you will be giving mom double the happiness with the anticipation of the event, and the event itself. Maybe it's as elaborate as a weekend getaway, adventurous like zip-lining or simple like a family bike ride. ●

FRIDAY FORUM Australians consume millions of dollars' worth of bottled water each year even though we have access to good quality, inexpensive tap water. Concerned about how to alleviate problems related to environmental degradation, including the demise of seabirds and other wildlife that ingest plastics, then student, Elizabeth Beaumont led a successful campaign at the University of the Sunshine Coast to end the selling of commercially bottled water. Instead, state of the art water refill stations connecting to existing water sources replaced single use plastic bottles. Believing that "It's time to feel empowered by the decisions we make" she went on to become a key note speaker at an International Pollution Control Conference in Melbourne , where she discussed her published model for sustainability known as 'Empowering Schools for Safe, Waste Free Hydration : Water for Schools, a Practical Model' . The forum starts at 10.30am with coffee on offer at 10am. The morning concludes at 12.15pm. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for information. For those interested in an interpretive birding walk before the forum, you are invited to meet Valda in the Environment Centre car park at 8.30am.

AROUND THE GROUNDS
HUGE SUCCESS FOR DRAGONS A word from the president Doug Toms Thank you to everyone on the Dragons Family who made our home games at Eumundi yesterday such a huge success. From marking and setting up the fields on Thursday and Friday afternoons as well as early Saturday morning to the final clean up on Saturday arvo. Because of all the volunteer's hard work behind the scenes we were able to host a fantastic day of rugby with all of our young Dragons enjoying exciting matches. Our kids are really developing into quite skilled Rugby players!! The highlight for me was the sheer joy demonstrated by young Jasper Bianchi after he scored his first try in his U8s match and Jasper's incredible act of sportsmanship to an opposition player who had been tackled. Makes all of our club efforts so worthwhile. Huge thanks too to our wonderful adults and young supporters who helped out in the canteen or selling cakes or raffle tickets a truly great effort by all and one that shows what a wonderful Dragons family we truly are. U9s vs. St. Andrews: BY Coach Bryan Eaton The U9's played a hard fought battle against St. Andrews at the Eumundi Showgrounds on Saturday. After giving up some easy points in the first half of play, the Dragons responded full heartedly in the second. Craig Yaxley was a powerhouse with the ball and even more intimidating on defence recording the most tackles. His tackling form (hips and below) was perfect, effective and most importantly safe which lead to him to receiving the player of the match. This technique is the Dragon's way of playing, tough but showing respect for the safety of the opposing team. Jett Herbert continued his dominance with the ball as did the rest of the team. The U9's executed team play and proper positioning in the second half and began to look like a well balance team. Continual weekly improvement, safe play and great attitudes have made this team a pleasure to be apart of. Keep up the good work gentlemen and remember to play hard but play fair, safe and respectable. Everyone is proud of you for your efforts and you should be proud of yourselves. Go Dragons!! ●

Cooroy wins Division 3 The Cooroy Golf Club Women's Division 3 team had a great win on 30 April when they defeated Bribie Island at Maroochy River Golf Course, gaining 4.5 points out of a possible 6 in the North Coast Zone Ladies golf pennants. This allowed them to win the overall competition of 7 rounds by 0.5 from Maroochy River and Pacific Harbour. This is no mean feat for a small though active club like Cooroy. Captain, Wendy Morse, was overjoyed to receive the trophy. ●

GREAT TEAM WORK BY ADRIANE SEABORN Under 8 Noosa Fins v Brothers An Awesome home round at Noosa & We will call them the Under 8 Super Fins as this week was another amazing week of supportive team work and great long range tries from Jacob Kain, Angus Alty & Hamish Payne. Most impressive was the commitment of tackling from these little guys. Our captain for the match and Player of the Day was Jacob for great leadership. Our Ben & Jerry's Super Player was Hamish Knott for putting his new skills into his game. Great Job Under 8.
Slipping past the opposition.
Under 6 Dolphins v Caloundra
There's no stopping him.
Both under 6 Noosa teams Played Caloundra this weekend. Both were very entertaining games with some good laughs from the parents. But what a significant improvement from two weeks ago. There were so many super stars but Fin, Perry, Harry, Matthew, Monty, Max, Nat, Lennox, Cooper, and Riley had a cracker with Perry and Fin being named man of the match. Well done to Lennox and Fin for receiving the Best an Fairest Certificate from Caloundra.

SPORT TODAY NOOSA JUNIORS NOOSA BLUE UNDER 12 The Tigers were up against a lower grade Maroochydore team, who tried hard all game. We had the opportunity to play the kids in lots of different positions with a dominating win. There were lots of contributors all day, too many to mention them all. Best players were BOG Rory McKenzie, Levi Glancey, Cooper Delaney, Ethan Slaney, Ben Bromage, Ben Allan. NOOSA RED UNDER 14 BOYS Noosa Red made it two wins on the trot with a convincing win over Kawana Hawks on Sunday. The Tigers were slow out of the blocks and lucky not to be well behind at quarter time. Some great work by the defence kept the tigers in the game and at half time were only 4 points behind on the scoreboard. The second half belonged to Noosa as the boys finally got their game going. In the end, the Tigers ran away with the game, winning 8.8.56 to Kawana Hawks 3.7.25. Taj Butterworth started forward and was quickly moved to half back and from that point Kawana could not get past him. Also across half back was Nooki Hopkins who has been solid all year and attacks the ball ferociously every contest. And Cavan Cartwright was lively up forward, kicking a great goal in the 3rd quarter to lift his team. Another good effort from the boys and improving with every game.
Playing a round.
AUSSIES BEAT KIWIS The Noosa Croquet club welcomed 17 international players when members of Fendalton Park, Christchurch visited the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. On Sunday morning, 6 May, they arrived at Noosa and played Doubles games with 16 players per team. One Kiwi valiantly played in the Aussie team. Two games of 1hr 30 mins were played, either side of morning tea. Noosa were the overall winners.
Niven Gugich,Noosa Club President, and Tom Devlin, President Fendalton Park Croquet Club. The visitors then went on to explore Hastings Street and Main Beach before Happy Hour and a meal on Gympie Terrace. ●

2018 QFA DIVISION 1 HART SPORT CUP
YOUTH GIRLS FRIDAY NIGHT CARNIVAL The Noosa Tigers Youth Girls have come away from the long weekend with a clean sheet having won all four matches they were involved in. Firstly it was our under 15 girls on Friday night who hung on to a 10 point victory over a very dogged Maroochydore in what was an entertaining contest. Best for the tigers were Maggie Harmer, Hannah McKenzie, Mia Woodburn and Summer Ryan. The under17 girls were next up with many under 15 girls backing up and continuing their unbeaten start to the year with a 6 goal win over the Kawana Park Eagles. Maggie Harmer again was the standout player of the night with Lauren Vaughan, Charlotte Sipp, Summer Ryan and Chloe Pitts all good contributors. A special mention to young 12 year old Lexie Ladd who filled in for the under 17 girls and did herself proud. Sunday we saw the Under 13 Youth Girls back down at Weyba Road on their familiar back oval where Noosa Pink had a very impressive victory over the highly fancied Maroochydore. Kyia Hide, Jemima Ward , Poppy Tindal and Sarah Oconnor were all instrumental in the win with Noosa Pink continuing their unbeaten start to 2018. Our second Under 13 Team Noosa White had a terrific victory over a depleted and very young Kawana outfit with newcomers Kia Pettigrove, Piper Wood, Zoe Wood and Larissa Tylim all playing pivotal roles in the win. ●
The Rococo’s Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have a flawless 2018 home ground record thus far after their fourth straight victory in tricky conditions over Coorparoo last Saturday night. With heavy rain and a constant swirling wind playing havoc throughout the night the top of the table Tigers were super impressive particularly in the second half to run away with a nine goal victory against the previously third placed Navy Blues. Noosa had many top contributors over the night but in my opinion none better than skipper Aaron Laskey whose form and leadership since being named captain has just blossomed. Laskey dominated across half back and continually started many an attack with his superb field kicking. Football manager Mitch Woods was almost as impressive with a sublime display off halfback. Woods’ cleanliness with both hand and foot was on show for the full four quarters. Gun recruit Tyler Stack was again impressive around the midfield collecting 33 touches while local youngsters Harry Maher and ruckman Connor McDonald continue their stellar 2018 form. Up forward, Kent Delbridge bagged
four (I can’t remember a time where he hasn’t kicked multiple goals for the Tigers) and Tommy Templeton with three goals was a noticeable influence on the contest. All in all a super impressive victory from Noosa as they now head away to Aspley this Saturday attempting to hold onto their top of the ladder spot. Despite the inclement weather, there was a fantastic crowd in attendance for our first night game of 2018 and what a ripping speaker Jeff Thomson was at our first President’s Dinner for 2018. All going well at Tigerland! Go Tigers Cheers Pittsy ●

KELLY'S WAVE POOL HUMAN AFTER ALL and personal with KS and DJ Perry Farrell etc) seemed to be having a ball, hooting and chugging 'em down like they were at the Superbowl. The performances too were a lot more varied and exciting than I'd expected, with Mick Fanning and Jordy Smith standouts. But then disaster struck. Halfway through Parko's two-wave heat, the freight train that delivers the wave had to undergo emergency maintenance. Parko came in and had a beer while he waited, and seemed quite relaxed about the whole thing, but if you knew the background, you could almost hear the grinding of teeth in the WSL control room. Since the beginning of competitive surfing in Australia, brand managers and event organisers have been trying to sell live surfing coverage to the networks. When the Nine Network was making the Logiewinning Surfabout series back in 1978, I asked producer (later global TV sports guru) David Hill when he would do live broadcasts. "When you bastards put the final on at 3pm on Sunday," he growled. In fact, the only time Australian TV has covered a surfing event live was the final of the first world surfing championships at Manly in 1964, when the final was held at 3pm on the Sunday, just like the footie. The promise of the Wave Ranch is that it can deliver a schedule tailor-made for live TV,
I got up super early last Sunday, foregoing the early surf for a bit of virtual surfing at the WSL Founders Cup at the Kelly Slater Wave Ranch in Lemoore, California. This was no major sacrifice on my part - the points were barely breaking on the low tide, and even if they were, First Point would have been claimed for the Queensland longboard titles. But nevertheless I wanted my money's worth out of the debut event at the land-locked wave pool out in the central California food belt. Since Kelly unveiled the new wave creation technology on social media 18 months ago, we've seen a lot of footage of contemporary and legendary champions trying it out, from the sublime (Kelly himself and Kanoa Igarashi deeply tubed) to the near-ridiculous (65-year-old Ian "Kanga" Cairns on his SUP), but apart from a try-out few heats late last year, we had not seen the wave pool in action as a contest venue until last weekend. I caught up with the Fox Sports TV coverage in the second round of this teams event, and, despite the fact that the pool surrounds could use some cosmetic massaging, the big crowd who had paid a hundred bucks to sit in the bleachers, and the corporates who'd paid nearly ten grand for their group VIP packages (as much Michelob as you can keep down, up close

Blackmore, normally a sensible interviewer. Outraged on behalf of the interviewee, I nearly jumped through the car radio in my eagerness to explain a few things to Mr Blackmore. The first of these is that 70 is not old. It might not be quite the new 50, but come down to Access 11 for a morning surf and say that 70 is old at your peril! The second thing I wanted to tell middleaged Rob is that there is no black hole of morbidity that you fall into when you reach a certain age. Some people are old at 55, others are young at 80. (On the inside at least.) With 70 already on the far horizon, I hope I'm in the latter team, and I hope by the time I've had enough, I'll have the courage of a David Goodall and go quietly and proudly into the night. ●

The media has been having a field day with the pathos surrounding the story of Professor David Goodall, who ended 104 years of life by assisted suicide in Switzerland this week. Understandably so, because it's a contentious issue and no one has earned the right to choose his departure date more than the esteemed scientist. But, running out of stuff to say on this worthy subject, the chatterati extended the boundaries to the more general subject of when is enough enough. Driving down for a surf the other morning, I caught Coast FM's Rob Blackmore interviewing a 73-year-old schoolteacher about this subject. Now this bloke turns out to be a vegan with a 45-yearold wife, a varied career you could write a book about, and an ongoing passion for life. "What's it like to get, well, old?" asked

even down to the three-minute ad breaks between waves. And then the bloody thing broke down! Of course, they got it working again, and although I was on a 10-hour plane ride and missed all of day two, my impressions of the first day were that on balance it was a pretty impressive debut. Maybe paint a few palm tree murals on the bare concrete and the networks will eat it up. Maybe.

SURF CLUB RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY It is now nine years since the Surf Club on Hasting St. conducted its last renovations. Now happy to relate refurbishments are again under way. Chairman of the Board of Directors Ian Young O.A.M. said, ''With our obligation as lifesavers to protect the tourists and locals who visit our beaches, we see ourselves as being a responsible and important member of Tourism Noosa. As such we are happy to be involved and provide a club that is in-keeping with todays trends." Regarding the project club general manager Anton (Moggie) Mogg said, "Our aim is to enhance the experience of dining and relaxing in a club that is both modern and inviting to members and visitors. In an atmosphere that is also family orientated, we look forward to playing host to all who pass through our doors." All indications are that major emphases will be placed on the entrance, bar, verandah and stage areas; with upgrade to kitchen facilities also on the drawing board. All renovations will be conducted within the existing boundaries. The reason for the clubs existence is to provide the finance necessary to maintain a high standard of beach safety supported by state-of-the-art rescue equipment. With ever increasing crowds and expanding areas of courtesy patrols, the cost of providing beach safety is very much on the increase. "With our club being situated on the immediate beach front at Noosa," said Moggie, "it not only gives our visitors a glorious view, but also when our beach

Apart from supporting beach safety, over the years the Surf Club has proudly made grants available to various organisations, thus ensuring it maintains its character of

being a local club. In the words of assistant manager Les Evans, "We want our visitors to understand; there are no strangers in our club only friends you haven't met." ●

STRONG WINDS HAMPER ANGLERS OVER LONG WEEKEND With the wind up for most of the weekend anglers again headed for the river. On the River quality tailor have been in good number in the lower stretches. Big live baits at night have been the most consistent option to target the larger fish. Surface lures have also been accounting for their fair share of quality sized tailor. Be prepared to lose a few however as these fish are very toothy. Bream numbers are also starting to increase throughout the river. Lightly weighted flesh baits like fresh mullet and frozen prawn have been the best approach. Golden, Giant and Tea Leaf Trevally numbers are also on the increase with the low light periods the most productive. The Woods Bays, Munna Point and the back of Noosa Sound have been the most active areas, again surface lures have been very popular another option has also been small plastics on lighter jig heads. Weyba Creek and the frying pan are still providing good numbers of whiting on live worm and yabby baits. There are still good numbers of crabs throughout the system. Try setting pots a little further upriver in deeper waters close to mangroves. Be cautious of possession and bag limits as fisheries are checking pots. On the Beaches again it has been about that southeaster. Sunshine Beach and rocks has again produced some good fish like Jew and the odd tailor on large flesh and whole fish baits. Castaway beach is also fishing well for dart and bream with the top of the tide the prime time. Whiting have also been noosatoday.com.au

taken in the closer deeper gutters. Worms, pippies and prawns have all worked well. Winter bream are also on the increase with fish over 35cm taken down towards Coolum Rocks. Mullet and fowl gut have been prime baits. Heading Offshore before the winds picked up on last Saturday morning anglers were in fishing utopia. Sunshine Reef has

been fishing exceptionally well for quality coral trout and cod in good numbers. Mixed reef species like red throat, squires and grassy sweetlip as well as pelagic like spotted and Spanish mackerel have also come from Sunshine.
