Education Week 2018
Running from 20 - 26 May, Education Week 2018 is all about celebrating the arts and is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, and early childhood services to showcase the work they are doing for students in arts subjects including dance, drama, music, visual arts and media arts. Celebrating the arts reflects the State Government’s target of ’Learning for Life’, which aims to improve learning outcomes for every child, in every classroom, in every community to provide the best chance of success in work, and in life. Among those celebrating Education Week will be Haileybury head of campus Jeanette Rawlings pictured with year one students. This special 8 page wrap showcases some of the exciting things happening at the region’s best schools.

FOCUS ON … EDUCATION WEEK 2018
Growing a few good men Central to the Growing Good Men Project at Berwick Grammar School is a renewed emphasis on the development of Learning Literacies. Head of Berwick Grammar School Officer, Dr Steven Middleton, said this is gaining expression in various forms "importantly in our CARE programs which have a specific focus on equipping young men with the capacity to express themselves and their concerns through emotional literacy". "One approach that has been most heartening has been the manner in which boys and staff have adopted the DEAR program every Friday," Dr Middleton said. "DEAR is an acronym for Drop Everything and Read and at 8.30am every Friday, this is exactly what happens. "Developing a whole school approach to the development of literacy is an essential part of building our school and improving VCE results. "I have been extremely impressed with the way our boys have embraced reading as a key factor in improving their own academic performance. However, reading for pleasure and enjoyment is so much more than just improving grades. It challenges, nurtures and develops our imaginations and understanding of our world and others, depending on genre. "When I meet with boys, my first question is ‘what are you reading?’ and now each speaker at assembly has a profile of what they are reading onscreen. "The English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon once said ‘reading maketh a full man'. Reading fills our minds and inspires us to keep reading and learning. To help us in this initiative we ask that parents engage with their boys, asking them what they are reading, read together and talk about what you are reading. Maybe even institute a DEAR program at home."

Shake salt from lunchboxes for brand-new lease on life Heart Foundation figures show that typical “go-to” school lunchbox options such as the humble ham and cheese sandwich can deliver school kids more than half their entire recommended daily allowance of salt. Dietitians at the Heart Foundation have analysed the average salt content of a range of go-to school lunchbox options and found that: A ham and cheese sandwich on white bread with butter can contain 3g of salt. This is 91 per cent of a four-to-eight year old's recommended daily allowance of 3.5g of salt and well over half (61 per cent) of a 9-13 year old’s recommended daily allowance. A cheese and vegemite sandwich on white bread with butter can contain 2g of salt. This is over half (57 per cent) of a four-to-eight year old’s recommended daily allowance and 40 per cent of the daily allowance for a 9-13 year old. A chicken loaf and cheese sandwich on white bread with mayonnaise can contain 2.8g of salt. This is 80 per cent of a four-to-eight year old’s recommended daily allowance of
3.5g and more than half of it for a 9-13 year old. Heart Foundation Victoria CEO Kellie-Ann Jolly said parents needed to be aware that the fillings they put in sandwiches could contribute more salt than they realise to their children’s diets. But this didn’t mean they should cut out sandwiches as a lunchbox staple. “There are many other healthy, low salt sandwich filling options,” Ms Jolly said. “Why not try roasted chicken and avocado on multigrain bread? Or an egg and avocado sandwich? Both contain less than a gram of salt. Or a cheese and carrot sandwich on multigrain, which contains only 1.4 grams of salt.” Recent research shows that two out of three Victorian schoolchildren are consuming 60 per cent more salt than is recommended every day, and more than half of that comes from “core” food groups, such as bread and cheese and breakfast cereals. Heart Foundation Victoria dietitian Sian Armstrong said the amount of salt in some core foods like bread and cheese was concern-
Salt can be a hidden nasty in many lunchboxes. ing, but the Heart Foundation did not recommend cutting them out altogether. “Bread and cheese contribute to the basis of a healthy balanced diet so it’s important to read the label and choose the lowest salt option or look for products labelled ‘low salt’ or ‘salt reduced’,” Ms Armstrong said.
“It’s also important to think about the whole lunchbox. An ideal healthy lunchbox would include a filling lunch such as a wholegrain sandwich with protein such as chicken or eggs. The snacks could be fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, and yoghurt,” Ms Armstrong said. “You can find lots of ideas for healthy and filling snacks, and learn how to read food labels at the Unpack the Salt website.” Ms Jolly added that reducing the amount of salt in children’s diets was critical to protecting the heart health of future generations. “There is a link between a high salt diet and high blood pressure in adulthood. Meanwhile, studies have shown that reducing salt intake during childhood lowers blood pressure. This is important, because blood pressure tracks over the life course, meaning higher levels in childhood increase the future risk of high blood pressure as an adult. Hence salt reduction strategies that seek to protect childhood blood pressure are important for longer- term prevention of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.”

Reading is a big challenge The Premiers' Reading Challenge has become an institution since is started more than a decade ago. Since the Challenge began in 2005, more than 2.5 million students in Victoria have read more than 45 million books. In his annual message to participants Premier Daniel Andrews said "these are numbers worth celebrating, with the Challenge serving as a cornerstone of our ambitious goal to get more kids reading". "Research shows that reading plays a vital role in a child's development, helping students develop their academic, social and emotional
skills," Mr Andrews said. "Whether casting a spell with Harry Potter, or hiding deep in the Australian bush with Hush the possum, the Challenge transports our youngest Victorians to different places and times - and in doing so, helps grow their love of reading." He wished all students good luck for this year's Challenge. "You've got some exciting reading adventures ahead." The Challenge runs through until 7 September. The online honour roll will be published in October.

The Department of Education and Training website has a number of tips for ways parents can support their child's learning. Helping your child with homework is a great way to get involved in your child’s education. Your child’s teacher will usually tell you about homework at the start of the year and give you a copy of the homework policy. The homework set for your child will vary depending on their age, the subject and the school’s approach to homework. The degree of difficulty and length of homework will also be set according to their age and ability. Homework will become more challenging in secondary school, in particular during the final years. Practice exercises give your child opportunities to apply new knowledge, or to review and reinforce recently learned skills. They include: completing maths exercises

A balanced curriculum Heritage College strives to provide valuesbased education for the whole student. Founded in 1999, the college has since grown to expand over two campuses, with Early Learning to Year 12 based in Officer and Foundation to Year 6 in Narre Warren South. As College Principal Sonny Aiono explained, the school's balanced curriculum "gives each student the ability to reach their God-given potential academically socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually." The college also believes that values and character are just as important as strong academic results to a student's success in the future. "Our bright, safe and friendly Early Learning Centre gives children the best start to their lifelong journey of learning. We run an Education Victoria accredited Kindergarten Program in a peaceful learning environment, along with long day care and out of hours care," Principal Aiono said. "Prep to Year 6 students are offered a wide range of subjects which enable them to explore their individual creative passions. Our comprehensive and stimulating program is based on the Australian Curriculum in conjunction with Victorian educational standards, delivered in a supportive and caring environment by engaging teachers." The school's broad and balanced curriculum extends into secondary school and includes a VCAL program which provides alternative pathways and practical learning op-

"With excellent facilities, inspiring staff and a balanced range of specialist subjects to accommodate individual interests and passions, students in Years 7 to 12 receive a well-rounded education," Principal Aiono said. "As well as the VCE, we provide support for off-campus VET courses and access to additional subjects through Distance Education Victoria and Victorian School of Languages all designed to enable students to achieve their career and tertiary learning goals." Principal of Berwick Lodge Primary School Henry Grossek believes that primary schools have the responsibility to provide a high class, comprehensive curriculum for all children specialisation comes later. "How exciting and reassuring it is that the theme for Education Week this year is the arts," Mr Grossek said. "Visual and performing arts occupy a most important part of the curriculum at our school. Full-time specialist teachers provide year-round instruction in these areas to all children throughout their primary schooling at Berwick Lodge." Mr Grossek said visual and performing arts classes are not viewed as stand-alone subjects. "Art embraces much - literature, culture, language, technology and physical education - just to name a few," Mr Grossek said. "It is with this in mind that the programs in the arts that we offer at Berwick Lodge offer our students outstanding opportunities to give practical application to their studies."
Most recently, in partnership with the City of Casey and Monash Freeway, Berwick Lodge students created a series of murals that are now proudly adorning the Monash Freeway underpass on Sweeney Drive. Their messages vary yet all contain powerful images of what road transport means to the children. "Last year our senior students participated in the annual Wakakirri dance and music festival. They represented Victoria in the national championships with their evocative presentation of the Hillsborough Stadium disaster in England in 1989," Mr Grossek said. "Our Monday morning assemblies are enriched regularly with whole of school energetic dance exercises, accompanied by popular music. There's so much more - why not join us during education week and see the marvellous range of artwork in which our students eagerly engage!" Hampton Park Secondary College has a strong partnership with its feeder primary schools. The college offers a sports mentoring program for students to umpire the interschool sports at primary schools. Students umpire a variety of sports and work with all the grade 6 students. This program builds the confidence of student mentors to be leaders, as well as building a positive connection to Hampton Park students. College teachers also work with primary school teachers and students to ensure the transition to secondary college is smooth and nurturing. The school has multiple transition days prior to children commencing, as well as when they begin Year 7. Students in Year 7 have an alternate program for the first few days which focuses on building learning power. This program enables students to understand how they learn best, to feel comfortable at Hampton Park Secondary and allows them to get to know their teachers and the new environment. Hampton Park Secondary has a positive peer support program, in which the Year 10 and 11 student leaders mentor the new Year 7 students. This program is highly successful and helps the Year 7’s feel a sense of belonging and connectedness to the college and older students. Students are the top priority at Hampton

Robbery spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells A children's court judge has expressed alarm at the spate of gang youths accused of robberies and thefts at the Fountain Gate shopping centre precinct in the past month. "Is there any reason why this has become such an issue at this shopping centre?" the judge asked at a bail hearing for a 15-year-old boy accused of armed robbery and other charges on 14 May. The judge said there had been a conversation about a collaborative approach between Victoria Police and Youth Justice to avoid young congregations at the venue. "It needs to be more pro-active. "There are so many young people committing serious indictable offending - robberies and thefts - and they don't seem to be dissuaded." Police opposed bail for the boy, accusing him of taking part in a series of "violent street robberies with a pack mentality". At the time of the offences, he was on bail barring him from attending the shopping centre precinct and hanging out with his co-accused. Despite the conditions, he was accused of the armed robbery, false imprisonment and theft from a 12-year-old victim at a Fountain Gate bus stop at 3.20pm on 25 April. He was allegedly part of a group that threatened the victim with a Taser, a flick-knife and hunting knives and demanded the victim's phone. On 10 May, the accused and two other offenders allegedly stole four items worth $1640 from a Kathmandu van parked in a loading bay at the centre. On the afternoon of 12 May, a 17-year-old male and his friends were followed by the accused and his gang from a Fountain Gate bus stop to the Bunjil Place centre. The victim was robbed of a blue vape outside the library area, and challenged to fight to get his bag back. The accused had allegedly been on bail at the

time for other Fountain Gate offences this year, including an alleged burglary and theft of cake and food from a Fountain Gate cinema. He had also been accused of the recklessly causing injury and assault of a 15-year-old and the affray and assault of a 23-year-old male. In the latter case, the victim was punched and kicked to the ground by a group of five youths. The attack continued while he was "lifeless" on the ground. The victims feared further attacks and feared for their security in public places, a police detective told the court. The boy's parents seemed to have "no control" over the accused. At the time, the boy was refusing to attend

school, was under Youth Justice supervision, and was attending headspace mental health services. He had nothing to do during the day. His offending was motivated by boredom and his negative peers, his lawyer said. A Youth Justice worker told the court that young offenders "seem to just be congregating" at Fountain Gate. "It's a public place and there's little control of them there." The boy was bailed again on strict conditions including a night curfew and a ban from Fountain Gate. "You need to stop because if you keep com-
mitting these offences, police will arrest you and you'll go back to Parkville (youth detention facility)," the judge said. Casey police local area commander Inspector Don Brown told Star News there were "highly visible" police foot-patrols in and around the shopping centre and nearby public transport hubs. The ongoing, regular collaboration with Fountain Gate management had resulted in the detection and apprehension of offenders and bringing them to court, Insp Brown said. Most of the offending outside the shopping centre was opportunistic thefts from unlocked cars or robberies, he said.

Despite the challenges of the cumulative impact of rate capping, faster than forecast growth and the global recycling crisis, this year’s draft budget continues Council’s strong investment in services and the projects that support the community. The draft budget features a $121.2m Capital Works Program which funds muchneeded infrastructure for our new and growing communities and renews facilities in our established suburbs. However, Council sees the 2018-19 budget as a window into the future, and the first in which the cumulative pinch of rate capping is clear and is impacting future decision making.

Dad denies ramming A man has denied he rammed a police car with a Mercedes Benz and fled in the car across a footpath in Cranbourne East, a court bail hearing has heard. John Brendan Persoons, 38, of Cranbourne East, told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that his 19-year-old son was driving the car at the time on 2 May. “My son rang me that day in a panic. He thinks I will take responsibility for him,” Persoons told the 14 May hearing. “I’m no longer willing to take responsibility for him. “I have an alibi, I was nowhere near the scene.” Persoons had been identified with the support of sworn witness statements, including by the son, police alleged. Two officers had observed the lack of number plates on the white Mercedes Benz vehicle and followed with their lights flashing, Leading Senior Constable Gregory Carter told the court.
Police parked behind the vehicle after it pulled into a home’s driveway on Stately Drive. Persoons then allegedly reversed the white sedan into the police car, and sped off by crossing a public footpath. The car was found by police at Lawson Poole Reserve that afternoon. Persoons was arrested at the Stately Drive house on 13 May. He faced indictable charges including intentionally exposing two police officers to a risk to safety. Under new legislation, Persoons faces a minimum jail period of two years if found guilty of the charge, the court heard. He was also charged with reckless driving to cause damage to an emergency services vehicle and dangerous driving knowing that police had given him a direction to stop. Persoons also faced pending charges of breaching parole, as well as making and using a false document, Lead Sen Const Carter told the court. In opposing bail, police described Persoons
as an unemployed drug user with an extensive criminal history. He was extremely likely to reoffend to fund his lifestyle, Lead Sen Const Carter said. Persoons told the court he had suitable accommodation, was seeking drug rehabilitation and “trying to do all the right things”. “I’m not a criminal out to cause any harm. Drugs have been the cause of it, Your Honour.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked Persoons why he had dropped out of contact with corrections officers for the past three months. He’d also had prior convictions for motorvehicle theft, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving - as well as 11 counts of disqualified driving, Mr Vandersteen said. In refusing bail, Mr Vandersteen noted the “very serious” charges, Persoon’s non-compliance with his CCO and that the prosecution case was “not weak”. Persoons told the court he was withdrawing from heroin, ice and morphine. He was remanded for a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 18 May.
Aboriginal outreach success under threat By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey's popular Aboriginal Gathering Place is weeks away from facing cuts of $205,000 in State funding. As a result, the Doveton-based facility hailed as "the perfect model" for Aboriginal community outreach - faces discontinuation of four youth programs from 1 July, Casey Council claims. The facility's opening hours would also be cut by about 10 hours a week, "profoundly impacting" on access to the service. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani led an urgent business motion at a council meeting on 15 May for a funding extension. "I've seen first-hand the supportive and connected space for our indigenous sisters and brothers. "It is a positive environment." Cr Rex Flannery declared he would be "embarrassed" to meet at Bunjil Place if the programs were cut. The gathering place offers something for scores of visitors of all ages - groups for youths, gardening, women's crafts, playgroup children and primary-school aged children. It serves a substantial indigenous community in Casey and neighbouring Dandenong. Artist 'Uncle' Doug Brown, who attends and helped set-up the centre, said it was a place that people could come and go. "They can have a cup of coffee or tea and talk about their problems with the workers. "You don't have to make an appointment. You can just come in and talk." The centre was vital to address social isolation, he said. "Before it was set up, we didn't have anything like it around here." The $205,000 in ceased funding covers the

It threatens the gathering place's beforeschool sports programs with breakfast and school attendance, Dandenong and District Aboriginal Cooperative youth groups, a kids club and health promotions and weekly events. Cr Crestani said the Government was halting funding as it transitioned to a new 10-year Aboriginal health, wellbeing and safety plan. She said there had been "positive negotiations" with the Department but "we don't want the programs to be lost between now and when the 10-year-plan comes on board". Casey Council recently increased its fund-
ing for youth homework and school holiday programs in 2018-'19. The facility also receives $171,500 in federal funding, which expires in October 2020. Funds for a local justice worker program expire on 30 June 2019. Cr Crestani said the facility's success was proven since it opened in 2016. It has been recognised by the Department of Health and Human Services' principal Aboriginal advisor as the "perfect model" that should be replicated across the state, she said. The centre was a finalist at the 2016 LGPro Awards and a case study in the Victorian Aboriginal and Local Government Action Plan 2016.

Six days after being put on a corrections order, a serial drug-trafficker returned to his old locale with bags of ‘ice’, measuring scales and $2870, a court has heard. Steven Wood pleaded guilty to his fourth drug-trafficking offence, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court via a custody video link on 14 May. He had been arrested after being found walking on Mossgiel Park Drive, Endeavour Hills about 4.19am on 27 March, the court was told. Police seized 21.64 grams of methamphetamine in four bags of differing amounts. Wood also carried a gram of cannabis, two mobile phones, the cash and scales - as well as a “graffiti implement”. A defence lawyer told the court that the drugs were for Wood’s personal use, the scales were to manage his drug intake and that he had two phones because one of the phones was broken. Wood claimed he’d just won the cash mainly in $100, $50 and $20 denominations on pokies at Hallam Hotel. “It’s trafficking based on the amount he’s found with, not on buying and selling off to other people,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the ice was more than seven times the minimum traffickable amount, the “significant” quantity of cash and the scales. “And so he’s carrying one (phone) that did work and one that didn’t work?” Mr Vandersteen said. “It’s not getting any better.” A week before his arrest, Wood had been sentenced to an eight-month corrections order for drug-trafficking in the same Endeavour Hills locale in August. The CCO followed a four-month CISP bail program - which included drug therapy and other social supports. “You obviously did quite well on the (CISP program) otherwise (the court) would not have put you on a community corrections order,” Mr Vandersteen said. It wasn’t appropriate to immediately release Wood on a CCO for what was his fourth trafficking offence in four years, he said. Wood was jailed for six months for trafficking and possessing the suspected proceeds of crime. The term includes 48 days of pre-sentence detention. When released, Wood will resume a varied corrections order including supervision and judicial monitoring.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Robyn Murphy, volunteer firefighter with Pearcedale CFA fire brigade
With Robyn Murphy, volunteer firefighter with Pearcedale CFA fire brigade. How long have you been a volunteer with Pearcedale fire brigade? Almost 5 years. What have been some of the major bush fires you have attended? I haven't been able to get to faraway places much in the past due to needing to get kids to school and such, but I just recently went to Warrnambool to work in the Incident Control Centre for the Cobden fires. Closer to home, I've been at the Cranbourne and Carrum Downs Bush fires this year, and the Hastings, Somerville and Crib Point fires over the past couple of years. What keeps you interested in firefighting? The challenge, the variety, the CFA family. There's always something happening and there's always something new to learn, somewhere new to go, and someone new to meet. I love it. What is the most memorable moment in your life? It might sound a little selfish, but at the moment it's the trip I did to Birdsville and the outback on my own last year. I had a ball and met some awesome people; visited some amazing places and it was so nice just doing whatever I wanted when I felt like it. What is your favourite television show? I'm not a big TV watcher these days and I'm more inclined to stick a movie on Netflix when I want to watch something. That means I've ended up watching some real duds, and other times I've come across an awesome movie that I'd never heard of.
6. Favourite place to visit in Victoria? Hmm... Anything along the Great Ocean Road. I like chilling out in the coastal towns, and driving alongside that part of the ocean is just breathtaking.

What is your favourite book? The Eight, by Katherine Neville. It's an awesome and intriguing story that I first read about 25 years ago. But I also have (I think) 82 Stephen King books so I kind of like him a little bit as well :)
What do you work toward in your free time? At the moment, it's preparing for my outback trip again. I'm heading back to Birdsville with a friend in July, so I'm busy planning for outback camping for about three weeks. I've got a lot of things still to do on the four-wheel-drive and just organising everything I need to take is pretty time-consuming.
What has been your most embarrassing moment? Fortunately, I don't think I really have too many of those as I'm usually the responsible one haha. But I must admit, when I was parking in South Yarra the other day, I managed to find out that my new four-wheel-drive with
Where would your perfect holiday destination be? Hamilton island! I've been there so many times and I absolutely love it. I've flown there, sailed there, ferried there ... each time I'm there it feels like a little home away from home. Just wish I could afford to go there every winter.

Fleeing thief’s speed crash By Cam Lucadou-Wells A prolific car-thief has crashed at high speed with another vehicle while fleeing from police in Cranbourne West, a court bail hearing has heard. Christopher Matwiejewski allegedly sped away in a stolen gold Camry from pursuing police in Camms Road in November, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told. The car travelled down the wrong side of South Gippsland Highway, crashing with an approaching Holden Barina. There was moderate damage to both vehicles, with both drivers escaping injury, police informant Acting Sergeant Gregory Kahan told the court. Matwiejewski fled on foot from the crash, failing to render assistance to the other driver. He was accused of stealing a Falcon advertised
for sale on the internet in Croydon on 10 October. After test-driving the car, Matwiejewski drove off when the owner got out of the front passenger door. Police tried to intercept the stolen car being driven "at speed" on Western Port Highway, Skye. The pursuit was given up due to the car's "excessive" speed. He was also accused of stealing two further cars in 2017 - two traced to him by his fingerprints. Plus, there was a further "pending" cartheft charge, the court was told. He'd also failed to appear at court in November for breaching his corrections order. Police opposed bail due to Matwiejewski's "unacceptable risk" of re-offending, failing to turn up to court and endangering public safety.
Matwiejewski's prior offences included multiple car thefts, driving offences, burglaries, deceptions and correction order breaches, Act Sgt Kahan said. "My client has quite the criminal history," Matwiejewski's lawyer conceded. Matwiejewski applied for bail three days before he was listed for screening at Dandenong Drug Court. He had awaited the opportunity and intended to plead guilty since 22 January, his lawyer said. He had been in remand for the past 167 days, the court heard. The lawyer said Matwiejewski would live and work with a close relative, and accept a night curfew if granted bail. In rejecting bail, magistrate Jack Vander-
steen said "there's nothing there, nothing to reduce the risk to an acceptable level". "It's too serious offending." Mr Vandersteen noted Matwiejewski was on a corrections order for 12 counts of car theft during much of the offending. It was lucky that the collision in Cranbourne West wasn't worse, Mr Vandersteen said. He added that a drug treatment order - with psychologists, counsellors, judicial monitoring and drug testing - was the "best thing" for Matwiejewski when released into the community. "It's probably the most supportive order for a person with a drug addiction. "He's just going to have to bide his time." Matwiejewski was remanded to appear at a Dandenong Drug Court screening on 17 May.
Threats as violent dad burns family home Alleged sex predator at large By Cam Lucadou-Wells
A man who threw a flaming rag onto the doorstep of his ex-partner's Cranbourne West home has been refused bail. After burning the front door, the 32-yearold man allegedly threw the burning material into bushes in front of the home during the 20 December incident. He then kicked in a security door and smashed a front window with his hand, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. The force of the strike scattered glass far into the lounge room, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted. The uninvited visit in December was in breach of an intervention order protecting his former partner of 11 years and their two children. He made various threats that he wanted his children back, prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court.
Earlier that afternoon, the man - a junior soccer coach - allegedly threatened the woman in her car at a soccer club car park. "Enjoy having sleepless nights," he said - telling her he knew where she lived and worked. The man told police that he'd drunk himself "silly" prior to his Cranbourne West attack after not receiving a response to his request for his children to sleep over. He didn't remember much about the incident, his lawyer told the court on 14 May. The "extremely sorry" man accepted he had to better manage his frustration and anger over not seeing his children, the lawyer said. "He was allowed some visitation but not as much as he would like." The man had shown "emotional vulnerability" while taking part in parenting and family law programs during his remand, the lawyer said.
SIGNATURE
LENS SHAPING
The relationship ended due to the man's ice addiction, the court heard. He had been abstinent from his ice addiction since being remanded in late December, the lawyer said. Mr Vandersteen noted that one of the primary-school aged sons had started sleeping with a baseball bat on-hand out of fear of his father's return. He said the "Achilles heel" was that the man reverted to the violent behaviour while being otherwise "highly compliant" with a corrections order. "It's not a social experiment where you'd release him to see how he goes." Mr Vandersteen deferred sentencing the man, pending a Forensicare psychiatric report into his behaviour. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 13 July.
An unknown man is believed to have sexually assaulted four females in Hampton Park in the past month, police say. The incidents occurred at Hallam Road on 17 April and 30 April, Willow Drive on 2 May and Pound Road on 14 May. He is described as 20-30 years old and 170 centimetres with a dark complexion and solid build. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

As an aside to Cam Lucadou-Wells' article on detritus on the freeway (Star News, 10 May, page 7) perhaps it could have included the increasingly damaged bollards positioned to stop motorists driving on lanes that now appear to be quite drive-able left for months strewn over and alongside the freeway. Rather than spending more days off work than on, perhaps the clean-up crew/s could actually do their work more efficiently and productively as opposed to the sign erection teams that take great delight in the blocking off lanes for works being carried out some metres from the road and behind concrete barriers. And while you slowly wind your way to work or shopping, spare a thought to the Vic Road/Fulton Hogan team that have now seen fit to have erected something like 60-plus full freeway coverage overhead gantries between Chadstone and Pakenham. At what cost and what desired outcome is anyone’s guess. That does include several already positioned gantries (prior to the so-called road improvements designed to make it a safer and quicker journey) and several road flyovers used for signage and other VicRoads “initiatives“. You might note that some are placed rather close together, especially around Rowville and Dandenong for reasons best known to the design team given that they appear to be for the same intended purpose. I also note the “cheese cutter" damage that stays un-repaired and that they are now are a permanent part of the roadscape into and beyond Warragul, not only in the middle but on both sides of the freeway, effectively placing broken down and stopped vehicles and their humans at greater risk from “tail-enders“. I wonder if Vic Roads bothered to evaluate the effect of a myriad of road side signage (much of which appears needless replication) on driving safety and the incidence of tail-end accidents? I have a sneaking suspicion that our money at least in part could be better used on other infrastructure projects giving better bang for our dollars. Charles Harris, Pakenham
On 11 May the Cranbourne Star News Facebook Page shared a story about three new primary schools to be built in Botanic Ridge, Casey Fields (Five Ways) and Clyde North East will be fast-tracked - with an expected completion date by the start of 2020. Here is how our readers reacted to the news online: Sharon Williamson: We need a high school not three more primary schools! Narrelle Osborne: Need more secondary colleges in the area otherwise all these primary school children will have nowhere to go locally. Bern Diamond: High schools? Leigh Hocking: Where are all these kids going to go to high school? Start with expanding Timbarra to Year 12 so that parents have it as a really viable option for their kids and add a couple more. Motov8: I agree we need more high schools but we don't just need more traditional high schools. We need some unique schools that will really harness the passions and potential that young people have. That will help them to attach value to their day to day learning experience because they see how it relates to their hopes and dreams. I speak in schools all over Australia and see a huge disconnect in this area. And I know that principals and teachers will say that these same things are important in their curriculum but they're not. Not to the extent that they need to be. Shelley Fisher Meade: We need more high schools.

Ratepayers warn on rates By Cam Lucadou-Wells A ratepayers group has urged Casey Council to not seek exemptions from rate-capping in future years. The draft 2018-’19 council budget lifts rates within the 2.25 per cent cap but mayor Geoff Ablett foreshadowed hard decisions down the track. Those hard decisions included either cutting services or seeking an exemption from the State Government’s rate cap. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the group was against any move to increase rates above the cap.
“I’d like to see the council reducing expenses. It just requires better budgeting.” “All this rubbish about not having enough money for capital works two or three years down the track is a load of bulls***. “They’re just money-hungry.” Mr Talvik said he didn’t have much issue with the $28 average increase in waste charges proposed by Casey in 2018-’19. The council rose the levy after renegotiating its recycling waste contract with SKM Industries due to the China recycling import ‘crisis’. CRRA is preparing a submission on the draft budget, suggesting possible savings
such as cuts to Casey’s $123 million wages bill. Cr Ablett recently said the rates cap was hurting growth councils such as Casey over the next decade. “This year’s budget is ... a window into the future in which the cumulative pinch of rate capping is clear. “It represents a tipping point where the future will be characterised by the increasingly difficult job of bridging the gap between the infrastructure and services the community expect and what Council can afford to deliver.” With the help of State grants, the council
still unveiled a $121.2 million capital works program for the coming financial year. Projects include a $4 million new pavilion at Jack Thomas Reserve, Narre Warren North, two new community centres at Clyde and Clyde North and a $7 million ‘missing link’ section of Glasscocks Road, Hampton Park. The former Narre Warren landfill site will be renamed Bayview Park and developed into a scenic walk inspired by the 1000 Steps in the Dandenong. The council also funded Stage 2 of Livvi’s Place all-abilities playground in Lyndhurst, and a community centre at Autumn Place, Doveton.
Whole class of kids missing out on school By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick 11-year-old Jack Ottens's deprivation from an education appears to be far from a one-off. Unable to regularly attend school due to a life-threatening illness, Jack has not been able to access a teacher's aide or home tuition - as reported in Star News recently. He failed to meet the Program for Students with Disabilities criteria for such assistance. The criteria covers a "significant health impairment" but only those that require "regular paramedical support". The department has found Jack's illness is not significant enough. Since the report, Tynong single-mother Sharon McKail says her son, who is on the autism spectrum, also failed the PSD criteria. The Year 9 student was unable to qualify for a teacher's aide due to his language skills being too advanced and his IQ being above 70.
"His IQ is below 80 but above 70," Ms McKail says. As a result, her son struggles to keep up with schoolwork despite the best efforts of his under-resourced school, she says. It isn't a positive experience for him, so he often refuses to go to school, she says. Ms McKail is part of a 300-plus member Facebook group Change the Criteria that has waged a campaign against the PSD rules since 2012. Many of its members have been unable to access funding to support children with autism spectrum disorder in Victorian public schools. Ms McKail says there's been little change, with Victoria well-behind her native New South Wales's inclusivity. "I really think the Government should reestablish special education units so the kids have the aides to help them." Likewise, Jack Ottens's mother Christine
has waged a six-year battle for more help for her brilliant Mensa-listed boy, writing even to the Education Minister James Merlino to intervene. All Jack receives is an hour visit from a teacher each week to organise school work to be provided by his primary school. He was rejected from qualifying for the State's home-based education support program and the Program for Students with Disabilities. Due to his sickness - and the 200 medical appointments a year - Jack couldn't keep up with the distance-education program. A Department of Education and Training spokeswoman told Star News the department and school staff would continue to work with Jack's family to support his learning goals. "When his health allows, Jack is supported by the school and the Department at his home to enable him to access the curriculum taught by his teacher at school.
Jack Ottens, centre, with mother Christine and brother Sam. 180392 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "The school is working with the family to progress an application for evaluation in this year's annual Program for Students with Disabilities round." Ms Ottens noted that the Department had "absolutely no interest in helping Jack until they knew (the news) article was coming out."

No bail for reindeer thief A Hampton Park man charged with burglaries and handling more than $250,000 of stolen goods including a Christmas display reindeer at a Clyde shopping centre has had his bail revoked. Jovan Culibrk, 21, had allegedly breached strict bail conditions including by allegedly committing a recent burglary, police told a bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 7 May. Culibrk had been placed on bail on 17 February on 53 charges including the reindeer allegation, two alleged car thefts and numerous burglaries from homes and building sites in Casey. However, despite a night curfew, Culibrk
was allegedly not present at his bail address at Frankston North when police visited at 11pm on 6 April, police informant Senior Constable Jo McDonald told the court. The home's occupant told police that Culibrk had never lived there since being granted bail nearly two months earlier, the court was told. While on bail, Culibrk - with an unknown male - allegedly forced entry to a home in Hampton Park shortly after the occupants took their kids to swimming lessons on 25 March. The pair allegedly were captured on CCTV walking down the street with more than $10,000 of goods including passports, jewellery and bags stolen from the home.
Sen Const McDonald said Culibrk was also under investigation for "other matters". He was also potentially breaching a corrections order and a good behaviour bond, the court heard. Culibrk had shown "little respect" for court orders or for programs to assist in his drug rehabilitation, Sen Const McDonald said. He had also allegedly defied a ban from gambling venues as part of his bail. He was re-arrested at his brother and co-accused Dejan Culibrk's hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 10 April. A defence lawyer said Culibrk was contesting the latest burglary charge, and faced significant delays for his upcoming County Court trial.
He was also seeking to attend trade school as well as re-engage with treatment for his drug, alcohol and gambling issues on the CISP bail program. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted Culibrk's young age, his limited criminal history, likely trial delays and CISP supports but found he was an unacceptable risk of re-offending. She noted that the new serious offending came on top of charges for a "significant amount of stolen property". "You weren't able to hold it together after one month (on bail)." Culibrk was remanded to appear at a contest mention at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 28 May.

Two wanted over thefts Police are investigating two men who allegedly tried to buy more than $6000 of mobile phones using stolen credit cards at stores in Narre Warren. On 23 March, a man twice attempted to use a card at a store in a shopping centre on Overland Drive, police say. On the first transaction at 12.45pm, he tried to buy more than $4000 of phones. It was declined. He successfully re-attempted the purchase shortly after 5pm. Police say the man then unsuccessfully tried to buy almost $2700 of phones from a white goods store at Narre Warren at 8.30pm that night. The card was believed to be stolen from a South Yarra letterbox between 18 and 23 March. The next day, a second man allegedly used the same card to attempt the same purchase at the same store. The transaction was declined. He used a different card to spend about $2000, police say. On 2 May, the first man allegedly returned to the store in the shopping centre to make a purchase using an allegedly stolen card. He is described as Caucasian appearance, aged in his mid-20s and with brown wavy shoulder-length hair and a brown beard. While at the shopping centre, he wore a fluoro-yellow T-shirt, blue pants and a black hat with a blue motif. At the white-goods store, he wore a black T-

Rodney James and the Boyd work, Jacob's Dream. 180739
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Boyds’ local arts legacy By Cam Lucadou-Wells Many will recognise the hilltop views depicted by the late, great Australian painter Arthur Boyd from his family's former homestead in Harkaway. In the 1960s, there were hopes that the home known as The Grange would be an art museum. Sadly, after years of neglect, it was demolished in 1967. The story of the 100-year home and the magnificent Boyd works however live large in a significant Bunjil Place exhibition, Home of the Boyds: Harkaway and The Grange. The show is rich with 55 works created at the home, including a Boyd mural The Prodigal Son salvaged from the home's dining room and reconstructed from fragments. The mural, cast in concrete, and weighing 20 tonnes, is on loan from the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. The other works have been sourced over the past two years from throughout Australia including the Bundanon Trust and the Kerry Stokes Foundation. "We wouldn't have been able to borrow all of these works without this wonderful new facility at Bunjil Place," guest curator Rodney James said. Guest curator Rodney James researched the subject extensively. It's the first time this pocket of local and Australian art history has been told in detail, he says. He explored the origin of the great Boyd family of painters, sculptors, writers and architects in Berwick and its surrounds, as well as its union with the à Beckett family establishment.
"The Grange at Harkaway was one of the most significant of the Boyd family havens. "It was pivotal to their attachment to nature and the development of their attitudes to Australia." The Grange was built from clay, dug up from on-site because its location was too steep for the cartage of bricks. From its lofty hilltop, Port Phillip Bay could be clearly seen. In 1948, writer Martin Boyd bought the property, re-establishing it as the main family home. In the next two years, Arthur stayed and created four murals as well as his 'Berwick series' of paintings - many of which feature in the Bunjil exhibition. When Martin left for Europe, the home was sold to a nearby quarry. It fell into disrepair, attacked by vandals and quarry blasts. There was popular but ill-fated support to save the home from demolition. The idea of an art museum was mooted at Monash University, with works promised by Boyd's friends, artists and people of influence. It could have been such a treasure - a "Bundanon of the east", as Mr James puts it. Mr James has seen gallery visitors swell with pride, many recognising the fields and ranges in Boyd's paintings. "The region has changed dramatically," he said. "But you still get the feel of these characteristic hills." Home of the Boyds: Harkaway and the Grange is at Bunjil Place, 2 Northeast Drive, Narre Warren until 29 July. For details on a series of related talks and workshops, go to bunjilplace.com.au.

Hicham has clear vision By Cam Lucadou-Wells Hampton Park videographer Hicham Wahid has already got quite the highlights reel. The former Narre Warren South P-12 College student was recently awarded the top individual award at Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Achievement Awards 2017. It effectively meant he was judged the state's top VCAL student. When he strode into the limelight and delivered his speech at the Deakin Edge ceremony, it suddenly felt real for Mr Wahid. "It scared me a bit having to do public speaking in front of a big audience. "I thought it would be just a simple award. It was a big deal. Before his two years of VCAL, Mr Wahid was unsure of his work direction. He explored teaching, sports, real estate and media without the dreaded pressure of VCE. And when he found his path, he grabbed it with both hands. A work experience placement with a videographer led to a two-day-a-week internship at NOVA 100 radio station in 2017. This year, he has kicked on as a "freelance" video editor and digital content producer at the station - with youth on his side. "As a millennial, I had a different, fresher eye for things than the (older) workers. "It makes a huge difference on social media." The job drew him into a studio with artists such as Rita Ora and Rudimental, working on

Humble, down to earth ... a really cool vibe." It was the 12th consecutive year that the College has won a VCAL Achievement Award. Mr Wahid is the fourth student from the college to take out top individual honours. Principal Rob Duncan said the VCAL's relative freedom gave options such as work placements. About 40 per cent of its students opt for VCAL ahead of the VCE. "Not everyone will go to university and not everyone who goes to university gets employed. It's important we are not seen as just an academic school but one that meets the needs of its kids." Just as importantly, VCAL helps address the nation's trade skills shortage, Mr Duncan says. FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING
Keeping an eye on kidneys
Nurses help out in Nepal St John of God Health Care actively seeks employees who can uphold the organisation's values of hospitality, compassion, respect, justice and excellence. So when nurses, Tess Matthews, Natalie Mason, Madeline White and Bridget Adams declared they were going to Nepal as part of a 30-day nursing program to help communities with limited access to medical services, St John of God Berwick Hospital got right behind them. "These young ladies not only uphold these values in the working environment, they are literally living them both professionally and personally as well," acting CEO of St John of God Berwick Hospital Lisa Evans said. "It's a testament to the good character of the caregivers we're fortunate enough to have working with us." In addition to flight costs and the $2300 they each have to pay to join the Nurses in Action Program, the nurses need to individually raise $2200 as part of a donation to Nepal's medical needs in order to participate. So far the team has raised roughly a third of their overall target with a little over $3000 raised to date. However, they are still a long way from the $8800 goal. In order to raise further funds, St John of God Berwick Hospital is hosting a Nepalese BBQ for its caregivers. They will also be raffling off a beautiful hand-made quilt which was donated to the hospital by a team of local quilters.
Nurses Tess Matthews, Natalie Mason, Madeline White and Bridget Adams are heading to Nepal to help communities with limited access to medical services. The Nurses in Action (NIA) program is a specialised, skilled volunteer program for qualified health professionals. The program's objective is to build local capacity in improving health services to rural communities living in extreme poverty who would not be able to access it otherwise. NIA volunteers work in local medical clinics, hospitals, mountain villages, women's shelters, palliative sheds, schools, children's homes, monasteries, juvenile prisons and orphanages. To learn more about how to help get these nurses to Nepal, please contact St John of God Berwick Hospital's marketing manager, Lisa Carman, on 8784 5000.
Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre believes that kidney cancers are one of the more challenging areas for a modern urologist to deal with. Mr McCahy explained that before the readily available ultrasound scans that are seen today, many patients presented very late to their doctor. This made problems such as a painful large lump in the tummy and associated blood in the water a common issue. Nowadays, an ultrasound scan is performed for many reasons and the kidneys are routinely reviewed. Small lumps are being found and the question becomes how to deal with them. “By definition, a small renal mass is a solid lump less than 4cm in diameter,” Mr McCahy said. “We know that up to 80% of these will be cancers but the majority are very slow growing and in elderly patients may never cause any trouble.” Mr McCahy said a special CT with contrast is likely to be almost diagnostic. “In these circumstances, it may be quite legitimate to monitor the lump with regular ultrasound scans and only consider treatment if there is a major change,” Mr McCahy said. “In younger patients, or those with rapidly enlarging tumours, a biopsy may be recommended or surgical treatment offered. Most operations nowadays can be performed either through telescopes (laparoscopy) or with robotic assistance. “If possible only the lump is removed (a partial nephrectomy), though sometimes, either because of size or position, the whole kidney needs to removed (a radical nephrectomy). Fortunately, we have a backup kidney, so there is mostly no change to overall kidney function. “Surgeons are increasingly trained in sub-

As a stone surgeon I do not get involved in these operations but my colleagues Tony De Sousa and Shekib Shahbaz offer a first class service at Casey Hospital and in the local private hospitals.” Philip McCahy is also a consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. Davies banging on the door By Nick Creely As Narre Warren enjoys a rollicking 5-0 start, they have also unearthed an absolute gem in defender Jesse Davies. The 19-year-old graduate from the Dandenong Stingrays and a Frankston listed player in the VFL has been in superb touch as a key defender down at Kalora Park, breaking out as one of the competition's most exciting talents in the opening five rounds of the season. Davies, who is banging down the door for a game with the Dolphins, is thrilled with his start to the season, but ultimately wants to keep improving himself. "The first few rounds I've been really happy with how I've been playing - not getting picked to play VFL is a bit disappointing, but to go back to Narre and play good footy and be 5-0 is great," he said. "I just want to play my role - if the coach comes to me and wants me to lock down on a bloke, that's my number one priority." Davies was among the Magpies' best in their superb win over Berwick earlier this season, while games against Beaconsfield and Doveton in recent weeks has provided the defender with the perfect chance to showcase some elite skills. And he hasn't felt out of place in the rigours of senior footy, with his early introduction during his junior days a perfect grounding in a tough competition. "The big bodies haven't bothered me, I played my first game of senior footy when I was 15 with Longwarry and I played the whole year in the seniors, so that hasn't really bothered me - as I continue to step up to higher levels, it's more just going to be the speed of the game I need to adjust to," he said. Davies' 2017 was superb with the Stingrays,
Jesse Davies in action for Narre Warren this season. 180506 helping marshal one of the TAC Cup's stingiest defences, but after missing out on the draft had some decisions to make. "It was a bit weird, at the end of last year I had a really good year and I didn't get talked to by any AFL clubs, so I was unsure what I wanted to do - I took a couple weeks off footy, missed the first few weeks of pre-season and then decided to go down to Frankston and give it a crack and play the highest quality I can," he said. "Whether that's this year or next, I'll continue to work on my footy and keep improving

- the two biggest things for me is my fitness, which has always held me back, and then also my confidence in talking, and to talk on the ground - coming into a new environment, I'm pretty shy, so I came in pre-season late and I was starting behind the pack a bit, but as the season's gone on, I'm feeling more comfortable. "The backline down at Frankston is pretty stable, and not many ins and outs, I'll just keep improving at Narre and get at least one game this year. "My goal is to keep improving and if I get

And Davies could turn out for the South East in the AFL Victoria Community Championship clash with AFL Yarra Ranges on Saturday. "I've been to training, and as long as I'm picked I'll be playing this weekend - I've always loved interleague, playing with the best and against the best, it's just a good standard of footy and I'm looking forward to it," he said.

By Hayley Wildes The VFL Tigers are heading to Beaconsfield. Those who want a great day of football action will want to get to Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield on Saturday. The day begins at 9am with under-19 interleague action between the South East Football Netball League and AFL Yarra Ranges, before the seniors face off at 10:50am. Then Richmond takes on Sandringham at 2:10pm in what promises to be a cracking VFL contest. Richmond has built a strong connection with the Cardinia Shire over recent years and the team has fond memories of playing at Holm Park in 2017. The Tigers defeated Casey last season in Beaconsfield and Richmond coach Craig McRae talked about that experience. "We really enjoyed coming out to the Cardinia Shire - it's important to the Richmond Football Club." He said. "Along with Melbourne, we've both got a lot of supporters in the Cardinia Shire and it's a good opportunity to come out and show our appreciation. We've got good memories and the facilities are awesome, so we're looking forward to it." The Tigers are off to a flying start in season 2018, much like the AFL squad, having dropped just one game. And there are plenty of stars lining up in the VFL for Richmond fans to watch out for. "We've got a lot of young, aspiring AFL players and there's some player's people would know like Brandon Ellis - a premiership player - who has played in the VFL the last two weeks, Anthony Miles and then our first year draftees." McRae said. "We'd love to think that in the last two years in particular, our VFL program has been a solid foundation for our AFL success - there are a lot of players developing, waiting for their opportunity. Last week we had 14 AFL players and there could be more potentially back from injury this week." A big potential inclusion for the Beaconsfield match-up is premiership star and excitement machine, Daniel Rioli. Rioli hasn't berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Richmond's AFL game plan is built around pressure and it won them a premiership in 2017. McRae said fans can expect that same manic intensity on Saturday. "Yes, every week [we want to bring that pressure]. We mirror everything that the AFL program does - we mirror our game plan, our preparation, our coaching structure - it's all the same as the AFL." He said. "We take great pride in that and if you come and watch the VFL, you'll see the same stuff." Richmond members receive free admission all day, while entry is $10 for adult non-members and $5 for child non-members.
Narre Warren North teenager Amber Clarke is an exceptional athlete, and one that is certain to make waves as she progresses her athletics career. The youngster, who is also a talented young footballer in her own right, recently competed in the 2018 Australian Little Athletics Championships on the sunny Gold Coast late last month, and to unbelievable success. Competing in the 80 metre hurdles, Amber ran an incredible 12.24 in the Under 13 age bracket, claiming gold and a national record as a result. Determined to walk away with even more medals, she stormed home by .13 of a second to claim the 200 metre hurdles gold medal with a time of 28.10. Using Sally Pearson as inspiration, the sky is the limit for the ambitious hurdler, who has done a lot of work to get where she is now. “I started years ago, I sort of just decided to try out hurdles, and I turned out to be really good at it, and I’ve done a lot of training to get good at it,” she said. But what makes a champion hurdler? You need to be fast, and be able to sprint, and also have the right technique - you have
to stride out your steps a little bit so you can make sure you can jump over the hurdle properly,” she said. While she looks to the future, Amber is extremely proud of her achievements and hopes it can spur her to continue to thrive in her chosen sport. “I have an Australian record for my age group for 80m hurdles - I was really happy to get that, I knew I had the Victorian record, but I was shocked to win the Australian,” she said. “I want to make a few more Nationals, and I’d love to make the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.” But Amber is also a talented winger for the Narre North Foxes and the first female to be accepted into the Rowville Sports Academy football program, and already has a league best and fairest next to her name. On Sunday, she played her 75th game of football, and also harbors aspirations to make a career out of the game. “I’d like to make the Olympics and the AFL, some people are saying it’s not possible, but my friends know someone who played netball and also AFLW, so it’s possible,” she said. “I’ve won one league best and fairest, and I want to win another one too.” Thursday, 17 May, 2018

Cavs continuing to build By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers went 4-2 in a loaded weekend of Big V basketball action. The State Championship Men were unable to get going on offence as the Hawthorn Magic stifled the Cavs at home on Saturday night. The Magic won every quarter, led by Jack Barry (21 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) to take the win, 76-56. For the Cavs, Raheem Lemons (15 points, 11 rebounds) played a lone hand as his hot form continued. The Division 1 Women made it two from two as they took care of the Western Port Steelers on Saturday night and backed it up with a thrilling win in Werribee on Sunday. It was a total team effort against the Western Port Steelers, with six players scoring at least eight points and Rebecca Borham topscoring with 12, in the 73-52 win. On Sunday, the Cavs had to fight all the way into overtime against the Devils to get the win, 79-77. With scores tied heading into the final quarter, neither team could gain the ascendency. The Cavs missed a free-throw with seconds remaining that would have secured the win in regulation, but in overtime, the Cavs got the job done with some clutch buckets. Tanarly Hood (21 points, 10 rebounds), Tarryn Wilkin (20 points, 10 rebounds) and JamieLee Jeffs (19 points, 11 rebounds) all posted impressive double-doubles. The Youth League 1 Men scored a massive win on Saturday night, but fell on Sunday to go 1-1 over the weekend. Against Werribee, Casey picked up the defence and held the Devils to just 21% shooting from the floor, on their way to a resounding 104-60 win.
Jordan Gooiker (21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) was dominant once again for the Cavs, while Brendon Head (20 points, 11 rebounds) recorded a double-double. Against Camberwell on Sunday, Casey was unable to overcome a third quarter collapse that saw the Dragons outscore the Cavs, 27-12. Camberwell took control in that quarter and grabbed the 83-68 win. Jordan Gooiker (18 points, 6 rebounds) was best for Casey in the loss. In Youth League 2 Women action, the Cavs recorded a blow-out win over Werribee, 12258. It was a dominant performance from the outset, with a 36-18 first quarter setting the tone. The Cavs scored 40 points off turnovers, compared to just two for the Devils, highlighting the Cavs manic defence. Lauren Tuplin (28 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) was efficient on offence, 11/15FG, and Rebecca Peacock (22 points) added to the offensive clinic. Round 9 sees a Youth League 2 and Division 1 Women double-header tip off from 6pm at Casey Stadium on Saturday night. The action continues on Sunday with the State Championship and Youth League 1 Men facing Waverley in another double-header at Casey Stadium from 2pm.

The preparations for Saturday’s massive Interleague clash with AFL Yarra Ranges are almost finalised, with the South East FNL reducing its squad down to 27 players. The final squad - likely to be named later this week - will be dependent on the VFL players in the squad and whether they will be selected for state level football on the weekend. South East coach Rhys Nisbet is thrilled with the squad he has assembled, and can’t wait to get out there and test the side’s mettle. “We can’t wait - we’ve had a really good response from the players and coaches this year, and we were conscience of picking the best side we could, and we got that, so it’s great,” he said. “We’re really keen to get out there and show our stuff.” In what looks like a high quality group of players, the most notable name on the list is that of Cranbourne champion Marc Holt, who got through his first game back unscathed on the weekend. Superstars Madi Andrews, Ash Smith, Brad Scalzo and Trent Cody all appear to be locks to line up on Saturday, as they look to bounce back from last year’s 18-point defeat to Hampden. But the most interesting and fascinating part of what is set to be a blockbuster clash is the fact that both competitions are likely to be one in 2019 as talks of divisional football ramps up, something not lost on Nisbet. “We’ve thought about it a little bit, it’s something playing on our minds - we’re trying to stay focused on what we’re doing and what we’re about and hopefully we can get the right result,” he said. The clash between the two competitions will begin at 10.50am at Holm Park in Beaconsfield, and is the curtain raiser for the VFL clash between Richmond and Sandringham.

Narre at its clinical best By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 5 It's almost frightening just how clinical Narre Warren's first five rounds have been. Wins of 16 points, 19, 72, 130 and now 106 - at an average of 68.6 points - prove that the Magpies have had one of the more brilliant starts of recent memory. Doveton were the unfortunate recipient of the Magpies' golden touch on Saturday, with the home crowd flocking to Kalora Park for their first home game in front of the spectacular new social rooms, 23.20 (158) to 7.10 (52). In the end it was always going to go one way, nothing less than a strong Magpie victory. But the Doves showed plenty of spirit, and were simply outclassed by a team hell-bent on blitzing the competition. The Doves did everything in their power to stick with the home side in the first half, but the Magpies had an answer every time Daniel Charles' side had some momentum, with the likes of Mitch Cox, Trent Cody, the skilful Cory MacHaya and a typically industrious effort from Jake Richardson and Jesse Davies lifting when it mattered, taking in a 40 point half time lead after kicking five goals in each of the opening two quarters. But it was the premiership third quarter where the Magpies lifted their rating and played at their breathtaking best, booting a wayward 7.11 to completely blanket the Doves to extend that margin to 92 points with a quarter left to play. "As I said to the players, our third quarter was good, and that's been the key for us - on the weekend we probably crucified how hard we worked and kicked something like 7.10, and some of those shots we should have really made," coach Matt Shinners said of the quarter. "We played some great footy in our forward half, and our tackle pressure was really good, and they just didn't score in that third quarter." In the eventual 106 point win, the Magpies had 12 individual goal kickers - including seven multiple goal scorers - making them easily the most unpredictable side in the competition. "We changed the side around a bit again, with the two young kids not being available, so two players came in with Mitch Cox and Trent Papworth really good all day," Shinners said. "This year, with how we've been able to spread our goals around is fantastic, and it makes it harder for the opposition to identify because we're not reliant on any one individual." At Holm Park, Beaconsfield knocked Officer off with ease with a 95-point drubbing, 17.23 (125) to 4.6 (30). It appeared as anything but a one-sided affair early, with the Kangaroos cracking in early and kicking the opening major through Jayce Valentine. The Eagles were inaccurate early, but broke through after four behinds late in the quarter with VFL listed midfielder Sean Dwyer kicking a cracker from the pocket. It lead to a further two goals, but that inaccuracy hurt them, emerging from the first term with 12 shots to three but only a 19-point lead. Scott Meyer was particular influential with a class display in the ruck, giving the midfield group first use with some deft ruck work, while Dwyer and Matt Homfray were all class as the home side threatened to tear the game apart. Over the course of the next two quarters, the Kangaroos had no answers for Nathan Langley (five goals) and Scott Meyer (five), who were floating forward and making a significant impact with their contested marking. After slamming on 11 goals to two over the course of an hour, the margin quickly rose to an ominous 79-point three quarter time lead, which eventually ended with a 95-point win. But it was the ease of Beaconsfield's ball movement that was the worry - Riley Verbi was a class act and found a stack of the football, capping off his superb game with a late goal, Daniel Johnston hardly missed a target by foot, while Meyer got the better of the in-form Sean Roach. Cranbourne, meanwhile, did what any good side does when they are faced with a challenge. That challenge, in the name of Pakenham was answered early in the third quarter after the Lions came into half time sky high on confidence after reducing their 17-point deficit to nine after a six goal second quarter. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Beaconsfield stars Scott Meyer (left) and Nathan Langley are all smiles during their rout of Officer. 180747 After a red hot start to the third quarter, Tom Marks made the Lions pay for some brilliant forward pressure, nailing a difficult shot from the packet and under duress. Another goal only moments later draw the margin out to 22-points, and the Eagles found a way on top, and critically, as they found their mojo to slam on a further four to ice the game in the premiership quarter. With a superb performance from bright young star Lewis Vella - playing his first senior game - the Eagles responded with a clinical final 30 minutes, with the returning champ Marc Holt also getting in on the act with two goals as he builds into form. But it was yet another sign of the side Pakenham is slowly building, with Zac Stewart once again tremendous for the Lions, while Jay Jay Peni continues to impress in the coalface for the young side. "We had to work pretty hard, a lot of credit to Pakenham, they make you really work for it - it was a good contested game, and we knew that going in," Eagles coach Steve O'Brien said of the match. "Halfway through the second we had a good break on them and we probably took the foot off the pedal a little bit, and credit to Pakenham, they got an advantage, got on a roll and closed in at half time. "At half time, we adjusted a couple of things and we're able to run out winners." And in the final game of the round, Berwick used all of it's class, experience and goal kicking prowess to completely flatten Tooradin at Edwin Flack, 24.19 (163) to 2.5 (17). The writing was on the wall early when inform forward Harry Money expertly curled a ball around, and from there, a running precision saw five more goals piled on, and the quarter time score read 6.5 (41) to 0.0. It's fair to say the Gulls were shell shocked, and with Bailey Asher, Travis Tuck and champs Luke Sheppard and Madi Andrews looking as if they have five seconds more time than their opponents, it was serious danger signs. The 41-point margin was stretched out to 53-points at the major break, with Andrew Dean booting the only major of the half. The only real issue with the Wickers - if you can really nit-pick - in the early stages of the season has been taking the foot off and not really ramming home the advantage, but that was quashed when Trent Thomas coolly slotted another major on his way to five early in the third. From there, it was the premiers at their blistering best, running in waves, using the footy expertly and on the rare occasion the opposition get the ball inside their attacking fifty, defend with desperation.

Narre Warren forward Cory MacHaya kicking a first quarter goal on Saturday. 180746 The forwards in Thomas, Money and Brody Connelly were carving up a Seagull defence suffocating with the pressure, and at three quarter time the margin was sat at 94-points, with 30 scoring shots to six highlighting just how one sided the contest was. Rather than take the foot and potentially rest up some players, the Wickers simply electrified, slamming on eight final quarter goals
to finish almost 150-points up, with 43 scoring shots to seven at the final siren an extraordinary difference. Lachie Gillespie's men will look to bounce back when they face Narre Warren at home after the interleague break, while Berwick face great rivals Cranbourne in what looms as a blockbuster. Hawks no match for Dees By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons have put together their most impressive performance of the season, recording a strong win against the previously undefeated Box Hill Hawks. The Demons got off to the perfect start with Melbourne Captain Jack Viney, who made a successful return from injury, getting the first clearance and forward 50 entry of the game. Jay Kennedy-Harris got on the end of it and Casey had their first goal within one minute. In what was a back and forth first quarter, neither team was able to break free. The Demons took a hard-fought 4.4 (28) to 3.2 (20) lead into the first break. The second quarter was much of the same. Both teams had a real desire for the ball and the contest was well and truly alive. Billy Stretch and Joel Smith were gathering
plenty of the ball, but finding avenues to goal was proving difficult for both teams. Two goals each for the quarter saw the Demons hold a seven-point lead at the main break. Two goals quick goals to begin the third quarter, via some Tomas Bugg magic and an Angus Scott set shot from 50 metres out extended the lead to a game-high 20 points. But as they so often do, Box Hill responded by booting two goals of their own, cutting the Demons' lead to just eight points. With the Hawks appearing to have gained the momentum, the Demons replied with a dominant 15 minutes of play. Tim Smith put through a major against the run of play and from there, it was all Casey for the remainder of the term. Although their dominance didn't translate
Tomas Bugg kicked four goals in Casey's win Picture: ROB CAREW over Box Hill. 172175 on the scoreboard - kicking 2.4 in that burst - it was telling that they were able to regain the momentum and control the game with a 25-point lead after three quarters.
When Bugg kicked the first two goals of the fourth term, the Demons lead was out to 35 points and all was going well. Once again, the Hawks fought their way back into the contest with three unanswered goals. Tim Smith responded by kicking two goals in two minutes at the 22-minute mark to all but break Box Hill's back. Late goals to Stretch and Corey Wagner saw the Demons get home comfortably, 16.15 (111) to 11.6 (72). Billy Stretch finished the game with 31 disposals and a goal in a best afield performance, while Tomas Bugg (20 disposals, four goals), Tim Smith (two goals) and Cam Pedersen (20 disposals, one goal) were pivotal. Casey's record now stands at 3-2, sitting seventh on the ladder. In Round 7 action, Casey faces the Frankston Dolphins in Frankston on Saturday afternoon.
The Rays rush right past the Ranges By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays remain on top of the TAC Cup ladder with a 5-1 record after a dominant win over the Eastern Ranges at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Ranges got off to a flying start, kicking the first goal of the game, but the Rays responded by kicking five of the next six majors. First quarter goals to Jake Frawley and Corey Ellison were critical in helping the Rays stay well within reach early and they went into quarter time with a two-point lead. After a tight first quarter, the Rays lifted their intensity in the second quarter and an early goal to Bailey Schmidt set the wheels in motion. While the Rays were controlling the play and locked the ball in their forward half, they were wasteful in front of goal, scoring three behinds before a Lachlan McDonnell major finally rewarded the hard work being done
higher up the ground. Bailey Williams and Matthew Cottrell both slotted majors in the second half of the quarter to give the Rays a 22-point half time lead. To the Ranges' credit, they came out firing after half time and kicked the first two goals of the third to cut the lead to just 10 points. When Riley Smith launched a long bomb for the Ranges' sixth goal, it looked like the game was set up for a thrilling final 40 minutes of play. The Rays had other ideas though. Three goals in quick succession in the final minutes of the quarter had the Rays on top by 30 points at the final change. This late quarter burst zapped the energy and flair out of their Ranges opponents. Campbell Hustwaite and Hayden Young were asserting themselves on the contest as their composure and sublime skills shone through in the clinches.
Three goals to none in the final quarter saw the Rays run out 52-point winners, 13.13 (91) to 6.3 (39). Six unanswered goals to finish the game once again showcased Dandenong's ability to run over opponents. Hustwaite and Young led from the front, while Jake Frawley was also impressive all day. Bailey Schmidt, Matthew Cottrell (two goals each) and Corey Ellison (three goals) were dangerous up forward and converted when it mattered most. The Rays' ability to respond when they were challenged in the third quarter was the highlight of the day. It wasn't just the stars who stood up either - the total team effort was simply too much for the Eastern Ranges. Next up, Round 7 presents an immense challenge to the Rays. A first versus second battle against the Murray Bushrangers, who also possess a 5-1 record, in Craigieburn on Saturday afternoon is a mouth-watering match-up

The Eagles and Burra roar home to remain undefeated By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 6 Keysborough remain undefeated, taking care of Hampton, 12.10 (82) to 5.12 (42). Adam Machnikowski was best for the Burras, while Chris Bryan (four gaols) was dangerous. The Doveton Eagles also kept their unbeaten season alive with a win over Highett, 13.19 (97) to 9.5 (59). After a terribly slow start, which saw Highett race to a 28-point lead at quarter time, the Eagles booted 6 goals to none in the second to take a 12-point lead into the main break. Matt Neve and Nicholas Beer were best afield for the Eagles.
DIVISION 3 - ROUND 4 Hallam came roaring home, but it wasn't enough as South Yarra claimed the win, 9.11 (65) to 8.7 (55). Rory McIvor and Dion Cavallo were best for the Hawks. Endeavour Hills were in the contest all day, but Ashwood claimed a 6.13 (49) to 5.7 (37) win. Sam McLean was impressive for Endeavour Hills. Springvale Districts were too strong for Black Rock, running out 10.12 (72) to 2.4 (16) winners. Sam Raru and Stafan Feehan booted four goals each for Springvale Districts. Hampton Park was wasteful, but it mattered little as the Redbacks demolished Heatherton, 9.16 (70) to 1.3 (9). Daniel Boudoloh and
Mitchell Hill were pivotal for the Redbacks. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 6 Sandown was overrun by Cerebus in Division 4, falling 5.10 (40) to 8.13 (61). The Cobras were led by Nathan Isles and Aaron Woods. Dandenong put up a valiant fourth quarter effort but couldn't chase down Lyndhurst, falling 9.9 (63) to 10.17 (77). Michael Scott, Jayke Hopkins and Nicholas Ford battled hard. Lyndale had no answers for Carrum Patterson Lakes. The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't get back in the game, falling 6.6 (42) to 12.12 (84). MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 6
Down at Bunguyan Reserve, a five goal haul to Luke Jennings inspired Pearcedale to a strong win over Tyabb, 10.11 (71) to 16.13 (109). Aidan Simmons contributed four goals in a classy display, while Travis Bravo was also brilliant with three of his own. TAC CUP GIRLS - ROUND 9 The Stingrays finished their TAC Cup Girls season on a high with their fourth in a row. Dandenong were dominant after quarter time against the Bendigo Pioneers, running out 10.8 (68) to 1.2 (8) winners. Courtney Jones and Isabella Shannon were best afield for the Rays.
