THE LATEST IN FOOD
After months of discussion, submissions, petitions and public meetings the Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Master Plan looks close to completion. Coffee lovers will be pleased and wedding organisers are a step closer to gaining a wet weather option for ceremonies. Fitness class goers and the Waterfront Restaurant owners may be less pleased. Council says the biggest winners are visitors to the riverfront. In other news is the story from Tony Page of his experience as a boy growing up in the UK during WWII. It's fascinating to read the way he viewed living through a terrible time of bombings and air raids. As we near the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI we would like to shine a spotlight on the experiences of locals or items of interest. Email us at newsdesk@

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
COFFEE BUT NO CANAPÉS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club will have to share its exclusive car park, the Waterfront Restaurant will not be able to serve drinks and canapes on riverside land following wedding ceremonies and there will be a limit on exercise classes. These are among the outcomes of the Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Master Plan that Noosa Councillors voted unanimously in favour of at its General Meeting on Monday. Councillors agreed the plan achieved what residents wanted from the public space - to have "a peaceful, relaxing public open space for people to enjoy the river". Determined following an extensive
Spotlight on Noosa River Foreshore. consultation process the plan attracted considerable community input and several petitions particularly in relation to the use of land by the Waterfront Restaurant and proposals for Chaplin Park. Cr Ingrid Jackson said her one disappointment was "that the Waterfront
Restaurant will not be allowed to serve drinks and canapes after wedding ceremonies on the small patch of grass next to the restaurant". "This is a disappointment for wedding couples and a large number of residents, as popping a champagne cork after a ceremony is standard practice and informally takes place all over Noosa Shire wherever weddings are held," she said. However she said she would "bow to the majority view". "In general, I feel the Master Plan is an excellent document and I will be voting to support it," she said. The plan will allow coffee kiosks to remain on the foreshore with limits, trial a dog off-leash area in Chaplin
Park and agree to council considering a feasibility study for the establishment of a multi-use water sports facility based at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club and investigate construction of a multi-use roofed structure in Chaplin Park. Exercise class groups will be restricted in number but one-off markets permitted. Councillors will make their final decision at the Ordinary Meeting this evening. If the plan is agreed upon Council will authorise the CEO to write to the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy to seek endorsement of the adopted Foreshore Plan as a Land Management Plan for the foreshore reserves in accordance with the provisions of the Land Act 1994. ●

COVER STORY
IT IS ALL ABOUT
DETERMINATION I BY RON LANE
t was Wednesday afternoon just after 4 and the young lady had finished work for the day. Swimming in the lanes at the Tewantin State School Pool where she works with her parents, several young hopefuls were going through their programs and as we watched, Lana Rogers newly crowned Open Iron Woman Champion of Australia started to relax. "It's a tough business," she said, "and you have just got to keep at it." As we started to chat it became obvious that here was a very determined young lady. She knew what she wanted, set her goals and that was it; to win the Australian Open Iron Woman title.
This for the girls was the ultimate; winning the Nutri Grain Series is also tops but it lacks the prestige and tradition of the Open. Even the Coolangatta Gold does not command the same respect. "To win the Iron Woman at the Australian Titles is a totally different ball game from the Nutri Grain; for me it really was the big one." Born in Sydney in April 1996 Lana lived with her family, parents Greg, Margaret and elder sister Dahlas, in the Southland Shire of Cronulla and attended the Inaburra Christian College. In 2001 both girls joined the Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, (as Nippers) a club in which their father Greg

was as a swimmer of legendary status. Lana went on to obtain her SRC Certificate and Dahlas being a year older, her bronze medallion. "I guess you could say that we grew up in the right environment for our dad has a record second to none." It was at 9 that she got her first taste of big surf. 'It was during a carnival at Shellharbour and I remember it quite well," she now adds with a laugh. "It was so big that I didn't want to go so that was it; I didn't. Believe me mum was not impressed. However after that I really started to learn that there is always a way around it. (When the surf is big). You could say it was a great

learning curve a very important lesson- and I haven't looked back" Then a year later Lana's attitude to swimming took on a more serious approach and she started winning medals. With the father as coach he set programs for the girls and most important of all taught them the importance of good work ethics. "If it wasn't for dad we would not be where we are today." At age 15 her family, moved to North Queensland and settled in Rockhampton: while there the sisters joined the surf club at Emu Park where Lana also obtained her bronze medallion: and the girls commenced patrol duties.

Our very own Open Iron Woman Champion of Australia, Lana Rogers. Also at this time 2012, a talent scout suggested the girls obtain dual membership by joining the surf club at Maroochydore. By doing this it enabled them to compete for Maroochydore in the big surf carnivals, thus gaining the type of competition that was unavailable in North Queensland. To do this it involved a lot of travel from Emu Park to the Sunshine Coast and back, but Lana said, ''In the long run it was worth it." After completing her schooling in 2014 she came to live in Noosa with Dahlas and as they were living away from their parents the girls started to fend for themselves. It was also at this time that they changed their membership from the Maroochydore club to Noosa; and once settled started to compete and train in earnest. It was then that a dream Lana had for years, a dream of becoming an Iron Woman, was starting to become a reality. But if she was to achieve this, her commitment would have to be full on and her other choice, life as a university student, put on hold. The path she chose was that of an athlete. In this predicament Lana was not alone as her sister Dahlas also had a decision to make; continue on a career in surf or concentrate on the pool; she chose the pool. Both girls made the right decisions: Dahlas went on to win a bronze medal at the Australian Championships swimming in the open 400m freestyle-- something of which Larna is very proud. At Noosa Lana came under two coaches Sharlene Kelly (ski) and Clint Irwin (board). By this time her parents had returned south and finally settled in Maleny. However because of the different locations her swimming program had to be addressed and after discussions, her coaching came under the supervision of Brian Stehr head coach at the Good Shepard Lutheran
College in Noosaville. ''It was three years ago,'' said Kelly, ''that we really became involved; and boy was she motivated. First two years we worked on improving her technique, strength, fitness and controlled aggressive attitude; it was then she came to realise her potential." "It is easy to see where her attitude came from," said board coach Irwin. "Her father Greg was an Olympic and Commonwealth games medalist as well as an Australian Surf champion so at an early age these virtues were instilled. She is very adamant about what she wants so occasionally we have our ups and downs; but basically she is a pleasure to work with." Her seasons prior to Perth had been full of ups and downs. Her competing in the Coolangatta Gold had been a great learning experience regarding programing; qualifying for the Nutri Grain was good but an injury caused bitter disappointment. "I was making finals but always felt like the brides maid. But in early 2018 things started to happen; came second in the Queensland lron Woman and won the Womens Open Belt Race. I got a real kick out of that (the belt title) as both my sister and dad were belt champions." On the Friday before the Iron Woman final at the Australian Titles, Lana teamed up with clubmates Electra Outram, Jordie Mercer and Kareena Lee to win the silver medal in the ladies surf team race. This was to be a good indication of what lay ahead. Then next day came the big one. The date was Saturday April 21st the place was Scarborough Beach West Australia; the time was approximately 11am and the occasion-the final of the Surf Life Saving Open Iron Woman Championship of Australia. The blue ribbon event for women Scheduled for Sunday the event was
bought forward a day because of inclement weather. Having qualified for the final she received from her ski coach and mentor Sharlene Kelly, what was to be simple but stirring words of advice, ''It's the Aussies-so you just got to go for it." The Iron Woman event covers three disciplines, swimming, 400 mts, board paddling 600 mts and ski 800 mts. The order in which each will be contested is decided by a draw conducted by officials; and order was ski swim board. "This is what I had hoped for- the swim section to be second." said Larna. "When I heard the draw I thought I had a good chance of winning if I could come out of the swim leg in front; and that was exactly what happened. As I ran along the beach to do the board leg, Sharlene words really hit me, it's the Aussies-- so you just got to go for it; and that's what I did. As I crossed the finish line it didn't feel real; I had kicked a goal that not a lot of ladies get a chance to do." Back home watching on the T.V.her father and sister were astatic. ''I was told that dad was speechless and that would be unusual for him" said Lana with a smile." Then just fifteen minutes after winning the Iron Woman she again stood on the starters' line. This time with two other club mates, Jordan Mercer and Electra Outram they were to contest the Womens Open Taplin Relay final; another major event for women. Like the Iron Woman, it consists of three disciplines board, ski and swim; the difference being that it is contested by three athletes with each being a specialist in one of the disciplines. 'It was great to win this; it was another first for Noosa," said Lana. "What really got us there was Jordie performance on the ski. She put in a great effort got us off to a good
start, really punched her way through the break and Electra again put in another great performance on the board my part was the swim: we pulled off, we won the gold.'' For the girls to win the Australian Taplin capped off a great season. Having contested seven major carnivals for the year they were beaten only once. Like all good champions Lana stresses the importance of her support group. "Looking back on my career it all started with dad coaching me in swimming. Right at the start he was strict and tough, set my programs and taught me the meaning of work ethic; and I wouldn't have it any other way." When talking with coaches Kelly and Irwin, both endorsed Lana remarks. Noosas Head Coach Darren Mercer said, "Her win was amazing, when she joined us she could hardly sit on a ski; her improvement was unreal and the win well deserved. I have never seen such determination.' But all is not a life of surf. Recently she was nominated by coach Sharlene Kelly to join a new organization called Windo; Women Initiating New Direction Organisation. A local community group founded by Jeanette Del Santo some 18 months ago, their specific aim is to offer help to young women in their progress through life. With her background Lana is happy to be of assistance. Coming from a family environment that would be the envy of many and telling of her experiences along the road to success, could be beneficial to some young lady in need of help. ''On the one day of the week I have off from training I go to my favorite coffee lounge order the most scrumptious burger in town sit back and enjoy the Noosa lifestyle; a lifestyle that I love." A small pleasure wellearned for a great young lady. â—?

NOOSA TODAY 7
THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Helena Wylie
Giving comes from within Noosa's Helena Wylie speaks to Noosa Today about the Dalwood-Wylie Charitable Foundation. Tell us about yourself. I am a solicitor by profession and have been in the philanthropy sector since 2004. I've always adored the arts and would have been an actor myself if I had been sufficiently talented and in those year's been born in Los Angeles rather than Cape Town in South Africa. When did you move to Noosa and why? We have been here since January 2017 having relocated from Sydney seeking a more relaxed lifestyle for myself and my family. Can you tell us about the Dalwood-Wylie Charitable Foundation? Beryl Dalwood was an adorable old lady who loved art and was quite a talented artist herself. She was my client for several years and we became close over those years discussing travel, cooking and various art forms. Her Will left a large portion of her estate for charitable purposes with me as her trustee. What are the core values of the DalwoodWylie Charitable foundation? To help and assist and support animals, the arts, those with a disability and aged care. The Foundation has jumped on board in partnership with NOOSA alive. What inspired this association? My foundation, the Dalwood-Wylie Charitable Foundation, was involved with Noosa alive! for the first time last year as Presenting Patron of a delightful one woman play called Hold the Pickle. I had become aware of Noosa Alive a little earlier in the year of 2017 and was thrilled and excited at the amount, standard and calibre of cultural events and entertainment that would be arriving in Noosa for 10 days. Loving the arts and entertainment, I was inspired to get involved both by attending as many events as possible as well as providing financial support as I am fully aware of the cost of the production of fantastic cultural and artistic events anywhere in the world. My husband and I are supporting as presenting patrons the Duck Waddle, a progressive lunch where you sit with interesting people at different top Hasting Street restaurants. Its exciting and reminds me of progressive dinners when I was a student but now in a real upmarket way.
Helena Wylie My husband and I especially enjoyed the spectacular events on Noosa Main Beach and went to each and every event on the beach. I was moved to tears about being on the most beautiful beach in the entire world with lots of violins playing and at time listening to two white grand pianos in gorgeous and comfortable marques. I was on a total high by being embraced by two of some of the most important things in my life - nature (especially the ocean) and the arts. There was something special almost magical about the experience. What would you like to see happen in the future with NOOSA alive? I would like to see the continuation of delivering excellent Culture to Community that Noosa alive is renowned for. And the perpetuation of the world class artists and performers that come to town during the festival each year for seventeen years. I would like to see even more support, nurture and showcase of the abundance of local talent we have here on the Sunshine
Coast. Most of all, I would like to see the return of the incredible and amazing beach events. Would you advise other people to take up philanthropy? The interest to help others comes from within - a place of compassion and empathy. With respect to Noosa Alive if local people want the area in which they live to succeed in terms of employment, the economy and the future they need to understand they have to contribute to make magic events like Noosa Alive work well for the now and for the future. These events build relationships and bond the community. It also brings a sense of pride and joy to the local community. I love the quote "Joy is not in things, it is in us." Richard Wagner. What else does the foundation support? A lot of funding goes to animal welfare, to farm animals, to rescue dogs, to the ocean and to orangutans. The RSPCA got a trailer. It was specially built so the animals can
drive away in comfort. Another rescue organisation, Precious Paws look after the large dogs and not so cute dogs. It's all done through foster carers until they find adoptive families. We provide them with food. And we support the Orangutan Project. The Starlight Children's Foundation we have supported for the longest amount of time because of the wonderful work they do. Mrs Dalwood realised that if it wasn't for her extreme good fortune financially she wouldn't have been able to live on in her own home. The foundation supports the Humour Foundation which believes in the therapeutic benefits of humour in improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable people and provides entertainment such as Clown Doctors and Elder Clowns. I believe entertainment and humour is good for health and for one's soul.

NOOSA’S INAUGURAL RUN No one knows more about the joy of running in Noosa than athletics superstar, Runaway Noosa Marathon Ambassador Craig Mottram who has been motivating athletes, family and friends to head to the inaugural event on Saturday 26 May. "I remember after the London Olympics in 2012 I went to a travel agent in the UK and said I want to go to somewhere where I can stay on the beach, I can get a coffee, I can run in a National Park and go out and have a few drinks in the evening if I want to. They looked at me like I was an idiot and said that place doesn't exist. They said they had nothing like that in Europe. So I ended up flying back from Europe to Brisbane and holidaying in Noosa," he said. "The attraction of Runaway Noosa Marathon is the racing over all distances from 42km to 10km and with a kid's race thrown in, together with the opportunity to have a weekend in an amazing destination. Craig said that while Runaway Noosa Marathon will be great fun, he doesn't think the world marathon record is under threat. "It is probably not the destination to turn in world record times for the marathon but it is a good location for a quick ten km or even a half. With 10km,
Craig Mottram training with son Christian. half marathon and a 30km it offers the serious runner some interesting training options for anyone targeting other

DECISIONS DEFERRED Whether the demand exists for a third petrol station within two blocks was not a requirement of approvals for Noosa Council which deferred approving the development application at 175 Eumundi-Noosa Road, Noosaville. A council officer told the Council's General Meeting on Monday that the application for the service station was allowable within the planning scheme. The officer said the applicant indicated the station would be Freedom Fuels and would not include an electric vehicle charging station though Council had asked if they would include one. Mayor Tony Wellington requested a decision on the application from NKS Corporation be deferred until Council's Ordinary Meeting this evening to enable further consideration. Another application deferred to a future council meeting was for a development permit for a home based steel fabrication business "of significant scale" at 54 Boronia Road, Cootharaba. Cr Brian Stockwell moved a motion calling for an independent planning assessment of the application and legal advice. Council heard there had been resident complaints about noise, parking, a dirt bike trip and hooning up and down the street, but not all complaints related to the business. Cr Ingrid Jackson said the applicants had spent about $60,000 on noise containment. Council will hear the motion at this evening's meeting. ●

ALL IN AS BATTLE CONTINUES BY MARGARET MACCOLL The battle over the future Peregian Surf Club continues with a public meeting being held on Saturday bringing parties together. About four months ago Peregian Family & Friends ran a crowd-funding campaign raising about $11,000 and engaged community engagement professional Leisa Prowse Consulting to conduct a community consultation process. The consultation brought together six community groups: Peregian Family & Friends (PFaFA), Peregian Springs Residents Association, Peregian Beach Business Association, Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCAI), Peregian Beach Community House Association and Peregian Beach Surf Club. After several consultation meetings three groups Peregian Beach Community Association, Peregian Beach Community House and Peregian Beach Surf Club withdrew from the consultation. PBCAI state PFaFA is a non-elected body which "was attempting to control the other Associations participating in the PFaFA consultation which is why it's continuation was not feasible". PFaFA have engaged market researchers Market Facts to design and facilitate a survey. The group has launched an online and phone survey and this week distributed an information sheet to 7000 residents. PF&FA spokesman Kane Livingstone said: "We have an opportunity to design the

Saturday from 3-5.30pm at Peregian Beach Community House, cnr David Low Way and Woodland Drive, Peregian Beach. There will be guest speakers from Noosa Council, PFaFA, Peregian Beach Surf Club and Surf Life Saving Queensland. ●
As the numbers of turtles nesting on our beaches increases turtle carers are taking action to educate people about the habits and need. Coolum and North Shore Coast Care is providing an Eco Discovery event at for all ages to learn about the life cycle of turtles. No live turtles will be displayed but real shells and a life size turtle (named Joan) will be watching as children work out ways to help turtles lay their eggs and assist hatchlings to make it back to the ocean. The eco discovery event will be held at Power Park, Mudjimba on 27 May from 9.50am to 12 noon. A gold coin is requested and registration via the following website is required: www.coolumcoastcare.org.au Two other events have been planned for 10 June and 29 July. NOOSA TODAY 11
IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT …
MY STORY OF THE WAR AND THE PEACE BY TONY PAGE
Tony Page of Tewantin was a boy living in the UK when WWII broke out. He shared stories with Noosa Today as we remember stories of war time in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI on 11 November. I was born in the UK in August 1932, so I was old enough to remember the war from its very outset. My sister Jean, was ten years older than I and was studying German at Bonn University. in July 1939 my father was worried about a pending war and insisted that Jean return to England. On 26 July mother and I went to Victoria Station to meet Jean off the boat train. While we were waiting on the main concourse an IRA bomb went off in the left luggage office. A number of people were injured but I don't think anyone was killed. We had been standing near the huge suspended main clock which was stopped by the blast. My first memory of the actual war was on Monday 4 September 1939. My mother and I had visited my father in his city office. Afterwards we walked from the city down the Strand into Whitehall and then opposite Big Ben my mother bought a newspaper with one word on the front page "WAR". Shortly afterwards my mother sent me out of London to Westcott in Surrey where I stayed with her friends the Thomas's. Saturdays were a special treat when local ladies would take small groups of us out on nature rambles. In May 1940, after Dunkirk, trains full of troops rescued from France came through, usually very slowly, and many villagers lined the tracks to give the troops hanging out of the windows whatever they could in the way of food. Things were so quiet my mother decided to take me back to London, just in time for the start of the London Blitz, which ran from 20 June 1940 to 31 March 1941. We were living in the top floor of a threestory mansion that had been converted into flats. Each night about 6pm as the sirens wailed, we went down to our little basement coal cellar under the stairs. Light was from tiny oil lamps. Despite the almost continuous noise of the bombardment we managed to sleep on two deck chairs until
Tony Page the 'All Clear' siren sounded in the morning. To pass the time I learnt to knit woolen ropes with the aid of a cotton reel and then graduated to small squares to be made into quilts. One night a bomb fell just across the road and set a major gas main on fire. It was so spectacular I was allowed up to see it. My mother had been cleaning her much prized silver tea service and left it on the kitchen table. Unfortunately, the kitchen ceiling was one of those that fell down, squashing the silver tea service flat. The Liverpool Blitz went from 28 August to 22 December 1940. Fairly early during that time my sister Jean was working with the Ministry of Food which had been evacuated to Colwyn Bay in North Wales. Jean persuaded mum to take a holiday there away from the Blitz. Mum, Jean and I went
one evening to see a live show in the pier theatre. When it ended everyone walked out to the end of the pier. To the North across the bay some 35 km away Liverpool was being heavily raided. There was a huge red glow over the city, punctuated with bright flashes. We could clearly see reflections from the attacking aircraft illuminated by the glow from the fires below and searchlights. I think all the ladies present (probably not only the ladies) were crying. Otherwise it was silent. Just a faint rumble like a distant thunderstorm could be heard. Slowly people just turned away and went home. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen. Shortly after this my sister left the Ministry of Food and joined the WAAF. We returned to London but the nightly bombing decided my mother to move to North Wales. She got a job at a quite prestigious boarding school, which also ran a very small day school of about a dozen pupils and my admission was included in her salary. After some two years there it was decided we should return to London so that I could take the Ten Plus exam that served as entrance to the better schools. I gained acceptance to Westminster City school which was evacuated to the Judd School in Tonbridge. We were billeted out to local families. Air raids continued. Kent seemed to be on bomber routes in and out of London. After one particularly noisy night we found a Junkers 88 had crashed less than half a mile behind the house. After a school holiday in London I was so unhappy with my billet I refused to return to Hildenborough. My mother and I visited the school office in Westminster and I got a transfer to a school in Chelsea and took the 137 Bus. Then in June 1944 the V1's or so-called Doodlebugs or Buzz Bombs started. Over an amazing 8,000 exploded in the Greater London area killing some 23,000 people. They were really frightening; being driven by a large Pulsejet engine which was incredibly noisy. At first the air raid sirens would sound but then they gave up as the Doodlebugs were coming continuously. People just got used to getting on with their business. Initially the Buzz Bombs flew until they simply ran out of fuel causing them to crash and explode. There were these awful moments of quiet after the engine stopped waiting for the explosion. Even worse, if you could hear the rush of air
from the falling Bug, then you knew it was going to be close! One morning as we were crossing on the Chelsea Bridge a Doodlebug passed in front of the 137 bus, no more than a few feet higher, travelling along the river. I was sitting at the upstairs front of the bus. Another time my mother and I were walking to the shops at Clapham when a Bug exploded nearby. A column of smoke and debris went up only a street away. Small items of debris fell around us, and then a large family photograph landed on the pavement in front of us. We paused and looked at it wondering out of those in the picture who had survived. A Doodlebug fell quite close by to our home and it proved too much for the building, causing a crack for the full three stories in the main internal wall. You could see through it and in places would have been able to put your arm through. My mother decided it was time to move. We moved to Clacton-on-Sea. The V2 rockets commenced soon after the Buzz Bombs, on 8 September 1944. In small numbers at first then launching a total of some 1,400 till 27 March 1945 killing some 2,800 people. From Clacton we often saw their contrails streaking across the sky. At least with the V2's there was no terrifying noise as they were supersonic, the first thing was the explosion and then you heard them coming! Two V2's hit Clacton both on the seafront promenade. One of them hit when mum and I were in a hardware store with shelving that went up to the ceiling, I thought the shelves were all going to fall on top of us but they settled back and we were safe. The last, and one of the most significant events that I remember was 'D' day. Late in the evening before, aircraft started passing over us headed out to sea. We went outside and watched their silhouette's as they were flying very low and the procession seemed to go on for hours. We were thrilled to get the papers in the morning announcing the invasion. VE day when it finally came was celebrated with street parties and bonfires everywhere. But what I remember most clearly after that was the day after the Hiroshima bomb and reading the unbelievable details of the atom bomb and all the things that it was speculated that atomic power could do for the world in the future. None of the public foresaw the Cold War at that time. ●

MELONY’S NOOSA MILLION PAWS WALK BY HOLLIE HARRIS RSPCA Queensland has announced a quirky guest at its Noosa Million Paws Walk on May 20, with local drag queen Melony Brests again throwing her support behind the cause. The local performer will act as the Master of Ceremonies after delighting crowds at last year's event with her incredible stage presence. RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty said that it was exciting to see members of the community donating their time and talent to support the cause. "We are so excited to welcome Ms Brests to our Noosa walk as this is our most important fundraiser of the year," Mr Beatty said. "We encourage everyone to come on down for a picture and to get out for a good cause with their pets. "Across Queensland the costs to care for surrendered, abandoned and injured pets and wildlife stretch into the millions for the RSPCA. The RSPCA's annual operating costs are more than $48 million in Queensland and less than two per cent of that figure is covered by government funding. "All money raised through online fundraising, the sale of merchandise and activities during the Million Paws Walk will help to fund our critical work," Mr Beatty said.
Melony Brests entertains the crowd at last year's walk. "People don't have to raise thousands to participate in the walk - even a $50 donation makes a huge difference to our efforts. "Of course, bringing along your own four-legged family member is encouraged, but we'd love you to participate even if you don't have a dog."
This year's Noosa event will include a raffle of a Ray White bike, 10 doggy contests, adult and junior fancy dress awards, free vet checks and market stalls. The Million Paws Walk is the RSPCA's flagship fundraising event, with walks planned at 19 locations across Queensland this year.
What: RSPCA Million Paws Walk - Noosa event When: Sunday 20 May, 10:00am start (registrations from 8:30am) Where: Noosa Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville Why: All proceeds go towards helping animals in need ●

SINGING OUTSHINES AUTISM STIGMA BY MARGARET MACCOLL Emma Tomlinson sometimes has problems with the ordinary tasks of everyday life but once on stage the singer shows extraordinary talent. Emma was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at four years of age. With treatment from an early age she has managed to deal with her disorder and benefit from the gift of music it has given her. Her mother, Danielle, said she survived the bullying she faced at school by escaping into music and has become an advocate for women with ASD to show that with determination and support they can also achieve their dreams. "I absolutely immersed myself in musical theatre, classical and opera as it allowed me to feel calm," Emma said. "I pour all my emotions into my melodies and lyrics, composing what not only relates to me but can relate to others. "I generally, I have found through my journey that most musicians have a passion for supporting individuals who are different because they see they have the ability to shine through writing and singing. "It seems the stigma of ASD is something of the past especially in the eyes
of the entertainment industry. "How often do we see quirky interesting entertainers who seem to have a story to share but produce beautiful quality music." The 18-year-old who is studying a Bachelor of Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) began singing lessons with opera singer Maggie Noonan at the age of 14 and has been mentored by Peter Koppes from The Church. Both encourage the young performer to seize opportunities and she has taken that message on board. Emma is now gaining attention across the coast with regular gigs at a range of venues including Streets of Harlem in Hastings Street and Foxy on Coolum, The Majestic Theatre, Pomona and the Cooran Arts Memorial Hall where she produced a concert called "Opera Funk". Earlier this month Emma performed at the closing ceremony of USC's Relay for Life event and last weekend she was at Cooroy's Fusion Festival. â—?

A FUSION OF TASTES FOR THE SENSES Salsa dancers were the eye-catching front runners of the street parade at this years Cooroy Fusion Festival while there was plenty to see, hear and taste at the town's major event. Spectacular weather helped make the festival a very popular event and entertainers like The Dennis Sisters and Emma Tomlinson wowed the crowds. "It was a wonderful day with beautiful
weather and a record crowd," Cooroy Fusion Comittee chairman Chris Bell said. "We lived up to our promise of once again being bigger and better than last year and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from everyone. We couldn't have done it without our amazing crew of volunteers and our generous partners and sponsors." â—?

CALL FOR FUNDING REVIEW
LENSCAPE
I was quite surprised to read today that the current agreement of Noosa Council and the highly controversial non-transparent, closed shop of the NBRF expires at the end of next month, 30 June. Given the almost non-stop on Facebook of Noosa’s community angst, may I ask Mayor Wellington and all councillors to give the council's and their own perspective as to whether council will agree to fund this controversial Gloster model past 30 June? Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point,
ABATTOIRS VS BROILER FARMS As someone vehemently opposed to the Cooroy Broiler farm proposal, but who supports having a local abattoir, I feel obliged to answer criticism of this position. The broiler farm proposed to crowd hundreds of thousands of chickens together, standing in their own faeces, for the six weeks of their short, miserable lives. Being pumped with hormones and antibiotics, until they were vacuumed out and trucked to their death, in big B-double trucks that would ply narrow back roads at all hours of the day and night. This development would also have created very few local jobs. When the council knocked back this proposal, the developer concerned appealed the decision. I willingly became a co-respondent in the subsequent legal action, to oppose the developer’s appeal, because I did not want such an industry here, or anywhere else for that matter. I oppose broiler farms wherever they are. Abattoirs are a different matter. The animals slaughtered there are to be raised on farms locally. If they are not slaughtered here they will have to endure long road trips, to be slaughtered under who knows what conditions. The people of the Sunshine Coast consume large quantities of meat. The last time that I looked this was not against the law. It is far better to have the animals concerned do minimal travelling, and to be humanely slaughtered, than to have them sent away. Having the abattoir located here will also create many more local jobs than the broiler farm would have. It is disingenuous to criticise Noosa Council, and people like myself, for what is a useful initiative. Joy Ringrose, Pomona
Tony Rapacioli snapped this beautiful shot for Lenscape this week. "Kookaburra's and birds here in Cooloola hill at Noosa Heads are super friendly, let me get this close with a 22mm lens for the photo on our verandah," tony said. Please send us your landscape, wildlife or lifestyle pictures to 'Lenscape' at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
LEARN FROM THE BEST Could somebody please explain to the Treasurer that cutting taxes to big business, while trying to get the budget into surplus, is not going to work. Australia is a stable nation with an educated populace, a relatively good infrastructure, and a workforce that is paid enough to be able to buy consumables. That is enough to attract investment from foreign companies. The US has shown us that such tax cuts have been used largely for share buybacks, with only seven per cent of the money going to the workforce.
The LNP recently claimed that they had halved ‘government debt’. In fact the nation’s government debt has risen from -3.8 per cent of GDP in 2007-'08, to 18.9 per cent of GDP in 2016-'17, because the government has been issuing bonds to fund its services. Their answer to this is to cut services, taking money out of the economy and guaranteeing that there will be less revenue in future. This government, while banging the drums of war, has committed $197 billion of our tax revenue to defence spending. Not here in Australia, but largely overseas. This sacred cow is not allowed to be questioned. Rather, they want the private com-
pany, Serco, to take over social services, to profit by making the poorest Australians even poorer. Anybody who as seen the film, ‘I Daniel Blake’, will understand what cruel disaster this action has been for the people of Britain. Why are we following the worst societies in the world, instead of learning from those with the best government services, and least debt-ridden nations - the Scandinavian nations - whose citizens are not being forced into penury by the big end of town? Joy Ringrose, Pomona

As pensioners the promise of a tax refund of $10 which comes into effect next July if the Coalition are re-elected doesn’t give us much to look forward to. That also applies to any Labor promises if elected. What would give us more to smile about and save the lives of a lot of Australians, young and old would be a promise to put that money into the many “Go Fund Me" pleas we read about every week. There are medical procedures available to assist in giving someone a better chance of survival, but for the unfortunate children and adults involved the cost is well out of their reach. So, come on Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten make a name for yourselves by showing you are humanitarians and your name forever will be remembered. As you keep telling us, it’s our money anyway not the government’s. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach noosatoday.com.au

OPPORTUNITY ABOUNDS IN one of Old Tewantin’s most coveted streets, this once grand home retains a regal air about her. The first home to be built in the Riverview estate on Cambridge Court in the mid-1990s, it is now dwarfed by its multi-million dollar neighbours, underscoring the opportunity presented. Her appearance may be a bit threadbare but the astute purchaser will see that any expenditure on updating will be swiftly returned in significantly increased capital value. See past her weathered exterior, the old tiled floor and faded carpets, and take in the voluminous crystal chandelier at the front entrance, the extraordinary painting of the living room wall, the ceiling height and beautiful grounds to appreciate the transformation to a million-plus home a well-planned Hamptons or other character style makeover would achieve. A formal lounge sits behind a home office located at the front door, with rear windows overlooking the garden. The adjoining kitchen and family room open to the covered back patio and marvellous 12-metre lap pool. Upstairs you will find a master suite that fills one side of the house with ensuite, oversized Juliette balcony, and extraordinary dressing room. Three other spacious bedrooms and main bathroom complete the upper level. But it is the easy stroll of around 100m that will take you to the river’s edge to enjoy a glass of wine, or even a paddle, that reiterates the power of location in real estate values. The heart-shaped Richard
Branson-owned Makepeace Island is just offshore. Loved by its current owners of 21 years, she would offer a good rental return until such time that you can restore her
retro glamour. There is no doubt she needs some work, but with a picture perfect location, a high value neighbourhood, great bones and strong character, this is the
investment opportunity and restoration project you have been looking for. She won’t disappoint in returning the love and investment you put in to doing so. ●

NEWS
CHANGE OF PACE JUST WHAT SHE WANTED A former jet-setting Sunshine Beach travel writer has switched jobs to become a paramedic after graduating with a perfect score from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC). Mother-of-two Jane Fraser graduated with a Bachelor of Paramedic Science and a University Medal for a perfect Grade Point Average of 7, and is thrilled with her new career with the Queensland Ambulance Service. "I'm loving it. I absolutely love it. It's everything I hoped it would be," she said. "I enjoy the variety of work on the Sunshine Coast; we have forests, beaches, camping grounds, farms and all sorts of different environments, so you get a good range of jobs." Mrs Fraser, 42, of Sunshine Beach, said she had been interested in medicine since leaving high school in South Australia, but studied journalism instead, a path that saw her "living out of a suitcase" for 10 years, travelling the world. "When I left school, paramedics wasn't a career option that even crossed my radar. I had a good career in journalism but I reached a point where I needed to do something I felt was more rewarding." She and her husband Andrew and kids Fergus, 14, and Hugh, 12, moved from Sydney 10 years ago, and she joined Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club where she became a patrol captain, trainer/assessor and first aid officer. "That was something that cemented in my mind that this was the sort of environment I wanted to work in," she said. "I don't want to be stuck indoors all

Director Bill Bennet will visit Noosa in June.
FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION What is intuition and how does it work? Film director Bill Bennet asked himself these questions after he listened to his intuition in an incident in 1999 and it saved his life. Rushing to the airport very early one morning in the US a voice in his head told him to slow down at an upcoming green light. At first he took no notice, but the voice continued. At the last moment Bill put his foot on the brake and narrowly missed a large semi-trailer running the red lights. The experience sent him on a three-year journey researching intuition and talking with leading experts in the areas of religion, 30 NOOSA TODAY

DRIVEN BY THE ELECTRICITY BY MARGARET MACCOLL The atmosphere was electric on Saturday for what Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey described as "an historic event - the first ever electric vehicle event" held in Noosa on Saturday. Electric cars, scooters, bicycles, trikes and charging stations were on show for the Zero Emissions Noosa Expo and crowds gathered to see what was on offer. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the Council was aware that the modal shift to electric vehicles was inevitable. "We have provided an electric charger at Cooroy as part of the State's electric superhighway scheme," he said. "Our transport strategy is also considering electric vehicles and other new technology. "Major vehicle manufacturers across the planet are all designing and making electric vehicles. Ford has committed $11 billion on technology to build no less than 40 different models of electric and hybrid vehicles by 2022. Daimler said it would spend a similar amount creating 10 purely electric and 40 hybrid models. And, as the ZEN Expo revealed, there are local independent manufacturers popping up as well. "When I first bought my Prius hybrid car 13 years ago, there was a lot of
Mike Danielli of Electron Vehicles with one of their bikes. scaremongering about batteries failing and other nonsense. Just today, driving between Cooroy and home, the car's speedo ticked over 300,000kms. It's still on the original battery. In fact, it hasn't had a hiccup in 13 years." The Queensland Government last week announced the release of a guide to installing EV chargers for property owners, planners and developers. Minister Bailey said sales of electric vehicles in Queensland were growing and with new, more affordable models entering the Australian market, EV charging infrastructure would grow in importance. "In January 2018 the Palaszczuk Government successfully completed the Queensland Electric Super Highway

ELECTRIC IS ACE Australian Clean Energy Electric Vehicle (ACE EV) used the event to launch its affordable all-electric cars - a panel van and a ute - which will be on sale from June and in stock from November. ACE EV representative Greg McGarvie said the vehicle, which was the product of a joint Swiss, German and Taiwanese venture, had been two years in design. The car will travel 350km per charge, retail for under $40,000 and each one come with a home charging station and app to locate charging stations, he said. Greg boasted of the economy of the electric vehicles saying one of his colleagues had recently driven from Melbourne to Maryborough in a Tesla at a cost of $20. ●
When Trevor and Marcy Richards worked as teachers in Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean they realised how dependent their lives were on electricity. "There was no power, no phone, no doctors," Trevor said. "Fuel prices were going up down here. We got involved in wind and solar power and then electric driven vehicles." Having grown up on a farm where he learnt a lot about fixing vehicles and a background in manual teaching, Trevor developed about a decade ago an electric ute he said was the first electric vehicle registered in Queensland. He brought his ute and a trike prototype to the show. Powered at his house in Kuttabul near Mackay, using solar power, Greg said the trip to Noosa cost about $3. Trevor's Drive by Nature business aims to market his trikes. For more information visit www.thebackshed.com/basiclynatural or phone 4954 0285. ●

Electric bicycles of all shapes and sizes were available to test out at the Electric Vehicle show at Noosa on Saturday. Among them were the Vallkree bikes. Named after the flying goddess the bikes are described by their creator Jason Sanger as a "gentleman's cruiser". With a top speed of 25km/hr and the ability to run about 50km on a single charge the bikes are street legal and sleek. Jason said the bikes retail from Thomas Surfboards for $33,000 and a hand made wooden version was available for $4,900. The bikes can be trialled at Golden Breed at the entrance to Hastings Street. ● Thursday, 17 May, 2018

A CONVERSATION WITH IAN MACKELLAR BY HOLLIE HARRIS NOOSA alive! (formerly Noosa Long Weekend Festival) sits down with IAN MACKELLAR - Festival Director (10 Years). Q: This is your tenth year as NOOSA alive! Festival Director. Congratulations, that is remarkable service to community. Tell us what is stand-out about NOOSA alive! 2018 Delivering a World Class program of events annually for 17 years is most definitely stand-out. NOOSA alive! 2018 will present 80+ ticketed and free events and showcase 250 artists across many genres, the highest quality entertainment and culture with choice to suit all tastes. Stand-out this year is that incredibly we bring to Noosa, 14 Premiere performances, including 3 World, 6 Australian and 5 Queensland over ten magical days in July. Culture Vultures, this is the place to be for sure! Q: What does NOOSA alive! mean to you? Quality artists, intimate performances and the ability to present a diverse program of events amidst the idyllic backdrop that is Noosa. Q: What are the three most important things that you feel NOOSA alive! delivers to the community? Ability to showcase our local artists and upcoming stars of the future. Inclusion of multiple associated events with local arts and culture groups. Instilling a sense of ownership and pride, anticipation and excitement within our Local Community Q: Can you name your top three highlights from the festival over the past decade and why? Noosa Beach Events in 2017 in association with The Beachfront Company, presented 4 days/nights of stunning Beach invents that combined Food, Music and Entertainment within the exquisite location of Noosa Beach. The Community just LOVED it! International Cabaret Diva - MEOW MEOW - performing exclusive Noosa performances at three separate festivals. The only artist I have ever seen crowd surfing at The J, much to the delight of the audience. Stars of International Ballet - 7 soloists from San Francisco Ballet performed exclusively here in Noosa receiving National interest and acclaim Q: What is a day in your life as Festival Director of NOOSA alive!? No two days are the same for me in my life as Festival Director. It can include, liaising with Artists and or Artist Management and discussing an exciting new show, to talking staging/sets/lighting/sound for a production we are presenting, to negotiating contracts, to creating publicity and marketing concepts with our professional consultants, plus a dozen other things on any given day ... . I love the diversity of my position and have become somewhat of a master in 'Juggling multiple balls in the air at any given time'! noosatoday.com.au
Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself? My life is the Arts! I have been on the stage since I was a child and involved with television and theatre. I embrace the opportunities that I am blessed to be given on any platform, whether is welcoming internationally renowned performers to Noosa, or being involved with growing the local arts scene. A recent highlight for me was the "sell-out season" of Funny Girl, which I directed at Noosa Arts Theatre. The depth of talent, passion and skill locally makes regional living an absolute delight. Q: What have been some of your favourite experiences working at the helm of this festival? To see the festival grow in stature and recognition over the past decade to be now recognised as 'Australia's Premier Regional Performing Arts and Culture Festival' is something I am personally very proud to be connected with. Q: What is your vision for NOOSA alive! To continue to grow and strengthen in terms of recognition, loyalty and performance opportunities. I would like to see major artists being secured with unique performance opportunities being created. For example, drawcard Artist/s performing live on Noosa Beach or hinterland location, with opportunity for multiple audience capacity to experience the event. To incorporate amazing performance events amidst our beautiful/natural environment. I would like to see the enthusiasm and support from Council and Community to ensure this can happen. Q: Give your 'Top two Choices' for this year's NOOSA alive! Hard choice as there is so much on offer in our 2018 program, however forced to select. My top choices would include; Local star artist, Katie Noonan's Elixir with Michael Leunig and String Quartet. This will be a superb theatre/concert experience, combining original music (Sung by Katie Noonan) to Michael Leunig's original poems, whilst Leunig creates original 'Mr Curly' imagery centre stage. To bring these 2 magnificent artists together in collaboration creates a unique and spellbinding theatrical experience. National star of (Musical) stage Blake Bowden (currently starring in The Book of Mormon) in his world premiere concert performance of Straight from the Hart together with a 10 piece orchestra celebrating the music and lyrics of Rogers and Hart, promises to be an exquisite and memorable event. NOOSA alive! brochure hits the streets nationally this weekend from May 19. Volunteers will be manning a NOOSA alive! tent at the Noosa Growers Market this Sunday March 20 from 7am-12pm and look forward to answering any questions about our extraordinary and exciting 2018 program. Mia Dyson - If I Said Only So Far I Take It Back
The Islamic Republic of Australia, by Sami Shah
Deapool 2
It's been almost a decade since Australian singer-songwriter Mia Dyson went to America and started carving out a foothold in that tough landscapes. Now she's doubled down on her long-held fascination with the States' rich musical heritage by recording her sixth album. The resulting collection is both sonically stripped-back and wilfully diverse, southern rock tones pulsing through tunes like sultry rocker Nothing and the beautifully discordant Open, while an '80s classic rock vibe permeates catchy single Fool and the slow-building Whole Is The Bleeding Heart. Uplifting torch song Everything Is Waiting For You brings it all home, confirming that Dyson's new lyrical partnership with husband Karl Linder has paid dividends. ●
What is Haram - a group of women, or something you should avoid. What are the Five Pillars of Islam - if not a building code. Pakistani apostate and comedian who emigrated to Australia, sets out on a light hearted exploration of Islam in Oz to find out what the Muslim community living here thinks collectively, and where they diverge in opinion and habit. And why they are strangely silent when the broader community expect them to speak out. This book is funny and superficially informative as the author is unsparing with his humorous approach. A useful glossary is welcome. Available at the Noosa Library. Book Review submitted by Jenny Carter of Friends of the Noosa Library. ●
It's back and madder than ever - The sequel to the Golden Globe-nominated comic book action romantic comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouth murdering anti-hero; it's Deadpool 2. After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Miami's hottest bartender, while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover. Rated MA15+. ●

5 WAYS TO WINTER-PROOF YOUR WORKOUT down. Start stretching and do bodyweight exercises, like jumping jacks and push ups, as soon as you get up. You'll get your heart rate going before heading out into the brisk weather and it will make it very difficult to go back to bed. Stretching post-workout is crucial but particularly in the cold-weather to keep your body safe from injury. Four, plan out wet weather options. On rainy days get some hand weights or stretch bands to use at home for resistance exercise, use an online exercise video or smartphone app to stay in shape. For families with kids, you can get creative with active play, setting up a treasure hunt in your home, or having a dance party in the lounge. Five, embrace the outdoors. Layer up to make sure you are warm enough and head for a bike ride or go with the whole family for a hike on the weekend. Breathe in the fresh air and bring along water, a hot thermos and warm, wholesome snacks to keep you going. Don't forget to slop on minimum SPF 30+ broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen, as sun protection is required all year round in Queensland, even in the cooler months. Around one quarter of all cancers can be prevented through being physically active and eating a healthy diet, so it's vital to plan in one hour of moderate activity or 30 minutes of vigorous activity into everyday life. ●

Plan a simple reward. Is there a reward you might enjoy for a job well done? For example, if you hit most or all of your marks on planned activities for one week, you’ll treat yourself to a splurge with money you saved by quitting smoking or a luxurious bath. Try to steer clear of food rewards, since this approach can be counterproductive.

Your health doesn't have an off season, so as the temperatures drop don't be tempted to hang up your exercise gear and hibernate use the change in seasons as a chance to mix up your workouts and reignite your love of fitness. It's important to stay active all year round, as regular exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, improves energy levels and feelings of wellbeing and reduces your risk of chronic disease, including some cancers. To help Queensland families get moving and stay healthy, Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan has shared five tips. One, stick to your goals. Revisiting your goals and planning out what you'd like to accomplish over the next few months can help you get motivated and stay accountable. You could commit to an event, set a goal to achieve a certain amount of steps using a pedometer, or decide to take part in a Parkrun near you a certain amount of times. Two, take up a winter sport or active hobby. Whether it's an indoor pursuit, like heading to a squash court or heated pool, a boot camp class, or playing touch football or netball, there's nothing like committing to a new class or sports team to keep you moving. Three, don't forget to warm up and cool

FROM PARIS TO NOOSA: IT’S QUITE A TRIP The charming streets of Paris and the natural beauty of Noosa collide at Noosa Regional Gallery with the exhibition, Paris-Noosa: Art, Environment and Realism which brings together 23 meticulously detailed contemporary realist paintings created with pen and watercolour by Noosa Heads artist, Phil Rolton. This technically impressive series of works juxtaposes two of Rolton's enduring passions - his commitment to Noosa's natural environment and his love for the urban street life of Paris. "The concept for this collection of paintings is to explore a realistic interpretation of the diversity and contrast of cultures and environments between two of the world's iconic tourist destinations, Paris, France and Noosa, Australia," says Mr Rolton. hopper numbers to 'safe levels'. Mr Fostin returns to Friday Environment Forum on May 18 to provide an update on the battle. A current project aims to protect and restore damaged coastal and urban Pandanus populations and to document and share relevant information across SE Queensland. The forum starts at 10.30am with coffee on offer at 10am. The morning concludes at 12.15pm. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for information. "Both these environments hold special places in my heart - Paris as a 'home away from home' and Noosa which has recently become my new home." Whilst living in Montmartre, Paris, for a number of months, Mr Rolton and
his wife, Robyn, relished the opportunity to meander through Parisian streets and soak in the everyday activities of their neighbourhood. Mr Rolton would make sketches as groundwork for his paintings, often inspired by his wife's photographs of the same streetscapes. Similarly, after relocating to Noosa, opportunities to walk and experience natural environments such as mangrove habitats, Weyba Creek and the ancient cliff faces of Noosa National Park, provided equal inspiration. Noosa Regional Gallery Director, Michael Brennan believes visitors to the exhibition will be enthralled by Mr Rolton's mastery of his medium and the realistic nature of the work. The exhibition runs until 17 June. For more information visit www. noosaregionalgallery.com.au â—?

NOOSA GIRLS TO THE TIPPY-TOP Junior Reports Youth Girls Noosa girls on top in all grades! Girls footy at the Noosa Tigers got underway on Friday afternoon with our under 13 girls playing each other in a highly free flowing and skilful game. In the end it was the superior pace and teamwork of the unbeaten Noosa pink who prevailed over Noosa White by almost five goals. Poppy Tindal was the best player on the ground with Chloe Murray, Zoe wood and Sarah O’Connor all best for the pink side. Jemima Ward continued her strong form for Noosa white with Charli brown, Lexie Ladd and Larissa Tylim good players also. Our Under 15 girls had a big 86 point win over Bribie Island last weekend in a pretty scrappy affair. Ruckman Charlotte Sipp was outstanding for the victors whilst power forward Imogen Van Der Wegt (5 goals), co-captains Emma Benjamin (5 goals) and Teesha Fox (4 goals) were among the best in a pretty solid team effort. Under 13 player Kyiah Hide again a standout in the higher division with her run and carry. The Under 17 girls continued their unbeaten start to the season with a thumping 65 point win over Nambour last Friday night. Captain India Maddin was fantastic for the tigers as was Charlotte
Sipp who is rare form in both age groups at present. Holly Strelow showcased her skills throughout the night whilst focal forward Kaitlin Karney booted 6 goals in a very impressive display. A big congratulations to Bella Smith, Maggie Harmer, Hannah McKenzie, Mia Woodburn and Keani Welsh who all are Noosa girls that represented the Sunshine Coast at last weekend’s state championships in Cairns. Cheers Pittsy
Under 12 report First Friday night game for the year seen us taking on the highly competition favourites Kawana Eagles. We knew it was going to be a tough game, so our preparation had to be spot on. To everyone’s credit, we come out of the blocks flying, and never looked back, running out to be convincing winners. Everyone done their job and stuck with our relentless Tigers pressure game plan. I would love to name the whole team as our Best, but the awards went to in order Cooper Delaney , Levi Glancey Ben Bromage and Jada Delaney in her best game for the year. Big shout out to the weekly awards sponsors Laguna Jacks and Dominos pizza. ●

There will be an U8 and U10 half time match. All juniors and their parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. ●
ROUND 7 - MAY 19 NOOSA AFC VS YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE
BY JULIEN PITTS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers remain at the top of the Hart Sport Division 1 ladder after a gutsy six goal win against Aspley in Brisbane last weekend. In atrociously windy conditions the home side jumped the ladder leaders to lead by 20 points at the first break after kicking with the wind advantage. The Tigers just seemed sluggish to start and after a few stern words from Sam Faure at quarter time (plus some minor adjustments with personnel around the ball) the Noosa Tigers clicked into gear. In fact their defensive structures in the final three quarters were outstanding with Aspley only kicking one goal for the game after that first break. Noosa peppered the goals in the second half and could have probably been further in front however the win was what they were after and 'on the road' games in unsavoury conditions can be tricky. Club legend Doug Murray described the contest as a 'pretty scrappy game with not a lot of highlights'. The wind just played havoc the entire day and with next to no crowd in attendance , the atmosphere was hardly exciting. Skipper Aaron Laskey was easily the best for the tigers and continues his stellar run of consistency as did Harry Maher and young ruckman Connor McDonald.
Once again football manager Mitch Woods was ever reliable across half back whilst Corey Boardman and Joel Lambourn rounded out the best. Back home at Weyba rd again this Saturday when we host Yeronga coinciding with our 2018 kids fun day. There will be jumping castles ,face painting, and heaps of fun AFL games so bring the kids down to join in the fun and support the premier footy code in the coast. I must mention Maggie Harmer, Bella Smith and Keana Welsh (all Noosa tigers girls) who have been selected in the Queensland state squad after starting at the state titles in cairns last weekend. Great stuff girls! Best of luck to all our junior teams playing over the weekend and see you all at the footy Go tigers Cheers Pittsy ●

LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
66-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN DOES CHINA You've all seen the full-page ads or the website popups - "China highlights 8 days 7 nights" for some ridiculously low price. One recent lazy Saturday morning the wife thrust the travel supplement between me and my first coffee - a dangerous move, calculated to get my fullest attention - and said, "We should do this." Since mainland China has been on the bucket list for a few years now, I read the blurb. It ticked a few boxes and offered a glimpse of places we wanted to see, but there was a fundamental problem. In a lifetime of travel, neither of us had ever been on a group tour, been led like lemmings through an airport or a busy city square by an authoritarian figure holding a colored flag. Years ago, when group travel was just starting to take off, whenever we traveled with our late, great mate Rennie Ellis in a family pack, he would lead us through airports and to the head of queues chanting, "Spider Tours this way." One year he even had tee shirts made for us. Spider Tours was funny because it didn't exist. Acme Holidays (not its real name) was real and I wasn't sure it would be so funny. Gavin, our friendly-faced tour guide, waits in the crush at Shanghai Airport waving the yellow flag of the tour company. Well, holding it rather than waving it: armed security guards pounce on wavers, presumably for obstructing their view of the crowd. But while we wait, the guards suddenly have their work cut out for them. Reminiscent of Beatlemania, a gaggle of giggling and screaming girls wielding selfie sticks pushes through the crush in pursuit of a young man in sunnies and a trucker cap. He's either a superstar or he just lifted a purse, hard to tell. As Gavin leads us to the bus we size up our fellow travelers - unsurprisingly we are all in our golden years, surprisingly it seems that most of us have never traveled this way before. They look like a pretty good bunch, an old builder from Bundaberg, a middleaged plumber from Melbourne, a couple of sassy sisters from Adelaide, a few old surf dogs ... We make introductions while the bus crawls through the night traffic to our hotel, and we learn the first of many lessons about China. Nothing is nearby: we are destined to spend many, many hours on the bus. Our first day in Shanghai starts early with the long trip back into the heart of the city and a visit to a silk factory where we

A rare four-star dunny in Beijing.
Hey Gav, isn’t it my turn to hold the flag?
are invited to purchase at "special" prices. Maybe it's the fact that we paid so little for the tour, the cash registers are soon kachinking and we are the proud owners of a silk doona and the most expensive shirt I have ever bought. More bus rides, the Shanghai Museum, a dumpling lunch, a boat ride on the river and we are met at the dock by Xiaoxi and Leon, our escape route to a private dinner, and also a big part of the reason we are in China. While we deliberated about taking the tour, our Noosa neighbours had invited us to a home-cooked Chinese dinner, made by their house guests Leon, who teaches English in Shanghai, and Xiaoxi, his charming Chinese wife. Over a perfect dinner they convinced us. So here we are, off through the bustling streets of this modern city to eat Chinese again. We are partly in awe, partly in love with pintsized Xiaoxi, who doesn't speak a word of English, yet takes charge and keeps us amused all night. The real treat comes when our hosts lead us from the restaurant to a high boardwalk and an unobstructed view of the magical Shanghai night skyline, a dreamscape of color, light and architectural wonders.
We take the Bullet Train to Beijing, 1300 kilometres at 350 per hour, offering a slightly blurry view of empty countryside punctuated by almost identical "villages" full of exactly identical apartment complexes. New city, new guide, so now we have Lily alongside Gavin. One is the flagbearer, the other pushes the stragglers from the rear as we make an ancient, hobbling dragon from train to bus and the long haul to our outer suburban hotel. The sudden high demand for budget China tours has led to the tour companies taking over outlying three and four-star hotels formerly the domain of domestic and business travelers. In Shanghai this was fine, but in Beijing our disorganized hotel is drowning with group tourists with nowhere to go. Dirty tables and cold coffee are the breakfast specialty, and in the evenings a sumptuous lobby lounge area sits idle while guests are sent to the popup Beirgarten in the car park for a cold beer and some appalling service. But Beijing itself, like Shanghai, is fascinating, and our guides are informative and mostly very amusing. The exception to this is the occasional hard sell for an expensive theatre option, or worse, in my

view, for a visit to a herbal medical centre, where an army of "professors" in white lab coats (like a scene out of a '50s B-grade horror movie) gave us all nano-second diagnoses of potentially fatal conditions that could be cured by the megabuck purchase of their natural remedies. Now it doesn't take a professor in a lab coat to work out that our hobbling group of old farts is more than likely to be suffering from one serious ailment or another. This fruit was so low hanging it was dropping into their white coats! But we marveled at the Forbidden City, ate a splendid lunch with a family in a hutong, climbed a couple of stretches of the Great Wall, and yes, we got lost in the Summer Palace and had to call for help. I still haven't quite come to terms with the culture and dynamics of group travel, but on balance, it was a fun week and I learned a lot about China. Would I do it again? Ask me in a month when we'll know if the world's most expensive herbal remedies work. The writer took this tour at his own expense and if the travel company wants a plug they can throw a freebie at him. ●

DOLPHINS FIRE UP U6 Noosa Reds and Fins v Brothers and Caloundra This week the Noosa Reds and Fins played Brothers and Caloundra at Sunshine Coast Grammar. We are seeing more ball handling and passing and had some exciting set ups between Lennie, Perry and Archie wich resulted in a few tries. Finn, Riley and Lincoln had a good game too with the rest of team. We love that everyone wants that ball, so a few pile ups going on which makes things entertaining. We just love their enthusiasm. Player of the Match was awarded to Nate and Joey with Max receiving a certificate for playing inspirational rugby in the true spirit of the game. U11 Noosa Fins 28 def Saints 5 A fired-up Fins flew at Saints from the opening whistle, our forwards barging onwards and controlling possession, then sending Will A over for our first try. Our defence was strong and paid off with more possession; a lumbering surge by Finnbar was supported by a bolt from Odette who sent Mackie over the line, under the post. James found his confidence and some

open space for two runaway tries - each over 50 metres! Brilliant kicking from Harry converted every try. Although Saints fought back hard, it was our continuous tough tackling in defence that made the difference on the day. Well done Fins! Players of the Match Shamus O'Rourke; Odette Richter. U12 Noosa Reds 15 def Saints 12 The Noosa U12's have been playing some great rugby so far this season. Saturdays match was never going to be easy but the team stayed strong despite a late come back by the Saints. Again the Reds came out firing in the first half running in 2 tries and keeping the Saints scoreless with 100% commitment in defence. Mack Frey's superb pick & go try in the second
half proved to be crucial in which was a much tighter arm wrestle right until the end. Player of the match awards went to Cody Harkins & Angus Low for their never say die attitude. U14 Noosa 54 def University 7 This Noosa team improves with every game and with both forwards and backs turning possession into points they look strong all over the park. Uni took an early lead but that was to be their only score as Noosa replied with 8 tries and 7 conversions. Tries: Patrick Breen (2) Max Ruster (2) James Gelling, Harry Heppell, Lochie Dudgeon, Jason Burns Conversions: Jarrah Charlesworth (7) ●

TUESDAY 8th May
NOOSA EAGLES It was a great day for the Noosa Eagles home game this week with both of the U7's starting off with a win. Well done to all the players who worked so well as a team, all showing growth in their skills! A significant drop in temperature did not deter the Under 8 Gold team this weekend who played against the Buderim Haze team. The game was exciting and very fast paced, with our boys showing much improvement with positional play and long passing skills. Although the opposition scored within the
first few minutes of play, we fought back strongly and ended with a 2-2 draw. Special mention this week goes to Byron who threw himself into each play with enthusiasm, and Ryan A for showing improvement in his attack. Enjoy the pizza, Boys. A close game for U10 Black! Every player fought hard and played great defense right until the end! With score finishing 3-4 to our opposing team. Congratulations Bayden and Cooper who both took out player of the week. ●

NOOSA NETBALL’S BRIGHT SEASON BY RON LANE If Saturday's celebrations to mark the opening on the Noosa Netball season are any indication the ladies should have the best season ever. By 8 am it was a bright sunny day with Noosa at its best, happy parents and hundreds of players ranging from the tiny tots (players of the future) through to their senior ages. With players dressed in colorful costumes designed around their team names the march past event was indeed a sight to behold and when a young team dressed as Willie Wagtails past the officials the applause was deafening. A little lady all of 6
yrs. old, stole the show when she marched dressed as a string of Fire Crackers, as a symbol of her team. Following her speech of welcome to visiting dignities players and parents Club President Beverly Bullivant introduced local M.P.Sandy Bolton, Mayor Tony Wellington and Councilor Joe Jurisevic. In her remarks Sandy Bolton highlighted the fact that the sport develops friendships that "stay with us for years." In closing she called on all involved to remember that net ball is now a National Sporting Group; she then wished them all the best for the season ahead. In his speech Mayor Tony Wellington got a rousing reception when he modestly
took the responsibility for it being such a glorious day. He congratulated the club on its appearance with three courts now having a new playing surface. The President then introduced Life Member Lola McDonald and congratulated her on being awarded the Certificate of Merit and being elected into the Hall of Fame for her outstanding contribution to the club and the game. Apart from her involvement to netball Lola was also heavily involved in the early days of the formation of the Noosa Nippers. The Noosa Pipe band were then acknowledged for their musical contribution
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
With three courts now resurfaced and more to come the facilities should well cater for the 44 teams now on the books. With a structure in place to cater for the 5-10 yr. olds by teaching them the basic skills then moving them on to a situation where they start modified games with modified rules, the future for this well run club is indeed looking good. At present there are 22 senior teams with Monday night games as well as Ladies Indoor Competition at the Leisure Center and the Good Shepard Lutheran College. With good game management, a structure in place to cater for the young and good facilities their success is assured. ●
JACK MANGROVE
PLENTY OF GREAT FISH FROM THE CLOSER REEFS! With the consistent run of offshore winds and low swell we had last weekend, plenty of angler took advantage and headed offshore to get into the action. The lead up to the new moon has seen the snapper go on the chew with reefs like North reef, Sunshine reef and Jew shoal are reporting good fish. Also on offer are a god mix of pearlies, tuskies, jewfish and sweetlip. Using a live bait rig to get some fresh Slimy Mackerel or Yakka's has proved to be worthwhile as live baits seem to be getting inhaled as soon as they get to the bottom. Large strip baits have also been popular with fresh mullet and hussar working well. When fishing bait a consistent stream of burley will really help the cause, having some pre-mixed burley or burley logs and Tuna oil to help get you into the action. For the lure anglers; soft plastics have been working exceptionally well, jerk shad style lures in either Motor Oil, Nuclear Chicken or pink have been the go. Those that have larger craft that did the run to the outer reefs, there was plenty of offer with noosatoday.com.au
some big amberjack, kingies, snapper, pearl perch, cobia and cod climbing on any live baits fished close to the reefs. Knife jigs have also been working well, dropped to the bottom and ripped up at speed has seen plenty of monster fish leave the bottom in pursuit of these fast moving jigs. The pelagic run still seems to be going on with plenty of quality mackerel and tuna taken from most of the reefs, probably the best advice is to get to the north of the feeding schools and let the fish come to you. In the river we have seen some big Flathead from the lower part of the system. These have been caught on a wide range of baits from livies to whitebait and of course soft plastics. The tailor are making a stronger presence each week as they make their run north. Fish in the mid 70cm mark are not unusual so it's important to up-size your leaders when the tailor are around as they can get through some gear if the leader is to light. The bigger fish are falling to a range of trolled lures and surface lures and
fresh strip baits fished on small gang hooks. Live beach worms have been accounting for quality Bream and Whiting in the lower estuary when rigged with lighter leaders and worm hooks. Fishing areas like Gympie Rd, Munna Point, Woods Bays, the dog beach and of course the frying pan have all seen great results. With schools of tailor starting to show up now is the time to start using gang hooks with fresh mullet strips, bonito fillet and whole pilchard baits. Fishing along the North shore has been very popular with the Double Island end seeing some bigger fish on the morning and afternoon tides, jew are also about and love a feed of tailor so if you get a legal chopper take the sides off him and send it out the back. The best jew bit will be between sunset and moonrise. There is still a strong presence of Whiting, Dart and good sized Bream on most of the close gutters. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
