We have 250 members, with plenty of highquality coaches who provide great experience for those wanting to learn and develop their skills." The club has been the beneficiary of around $40,000 in funds from the Stronger Communities Program, which is a result of collaboration between Yarra Ranges Council and the Federal Government. The funds have helped to fund the resurfacing of two of the courts, with high-grade playing surfaces. Ms Sadlier said, before the resurfacing, rabbits had been sneaking in through the gates and digging burrows underneath the old surfaces, which had been causing a few headaches for players.

Now, with eight high-grade surfaced courts, the club is now open to draw higher-level tournaments to the area. On Wednesday 16 May, the club took up the opportunity to say thank you to the key drivers of the project, including Mr Smith, Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox, and special guest; Minister for Territories, Regional Development and Local Government, John McVeigh. Many of the club's coaches, stalwarts and members turned out to pay tribute. Mr Smith said it was fantastic to see the Stronger Communities Program making such a difference, with widespread benefits to the community. "To come back and see this done is truly special," he said.

From the outside, it may've seemed like a run-of-the-mill funding announcement for a sporting facilities upgrade. But, internally, the collaboration between Yarra Ranges Council and Casey MP Tony Smith has not only rescued the Lilydale Tennis Club, but injected new life into the sport of tennis within the Yarra Ranges. Just a few years ago, the club was the victim of a fraud event, which left the club within one month of being de-registered and closing its doors. However, the devoted committee dug in its heels and sought out help in the form of a visit to Mr Smith's office.

The result, now just years later, is an eightcourt facility that is now ready to host statelevel tournaments, as well as an influx of players and members. Club President Debbie Sadlier had been a junior convenor for nine years, before stepping up to take on the presidency when required. She said the club now has a clear direction. "The club had been brought to its knees and we were very close to being de-registered," Ms Sadlier said. " ... the club was sinking; what it's done is it's just lifted us up to a new realm where we have enthusiasm in the club and it's spreading out into the greater community. "The funds have really put life into our club.

Toy library expands Puffing Billy's Toy Library has evolved into a community educational hub, hosting a milestone launch recently, with 17 organisations and 11 sponsors. Volunteers have secured an expanded range of new toys, from wooden building blocks to programmable robots, microscopes and even party packs. The day - on 21 April - was packed with local entertainment, stalls and gourmet food, offering something for everybody. Macclesfield CFA brought a fire truck to the festivities, while Bendigo Bank provided the money for a petting zoo and pony rides. Committee member Samantha Willis touted it as the biggest event the group has ever held. "We offer not only toys, but a place to call a second home, a play centre for children to mingle and become leaders of their learning by selecting what they feel is important to them on that day," she said. "Come for a free tea and coffee, a chat to other like-minded mums and dads who encourage learning through play with their children." A raffle was also drawn, giving away prizes including a family pass to the Puffing Billy Railway. The centre's regular opening hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am until 11.30am. It was made possible due to a donation by Fonterra.

Committee members of the Puffing Billy Toy Library met with Fonterra representatives, who sponsored the event.

Ela Gandhi drops in for a quick bite

Don't eat

Belgrave-based Indian street food restaurant, Babaji's Kitchen, recently received a warm surprise when the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi dined at the popular location. Ela Gandhi is the granddaughter of the man they call 'the father of modern day India', who was known for his non-violent protests and leading India to their independnce. Ela is also renowned as a peace activist, who has continued her grandfather's legacy and who was instrumental in the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa. Babaji's Kitchen was proud to cook their specialty for Ela; a traditional South Indian masala dosa served with chammanthi (coconut chutney). Chef Max grew up on dosa in his tropical beachside village in India, before he settled in Belgrave with his Australian wife. "A masala dosa is a humble dish, a little like a pancake made from lentils and filled with spiced potato," he said. "Traditionally, it's our breakfast but here in Australia we eat it any time of day. Watching them being made in front of you is all part of the experience. "Ela ate every last bit of her dosa. We think she liked it." Max said he enjoyed bringing the tastes of India to the hills. "When we started our journey cooking at the Belgrave Big Dreams market four years ago, never did we imaging that we would be cooking for those that we read about in our history books," he said.

Autumn conditions have created ideal growing conditions for poisonous mushrooms, according to Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Charles Guest. Professor Guest said people should avoid gathering wild mushrooms from their own gardens because of the risk of collecting poisonous varieties, which may appear very similar to edible. The warning coincides with the arrival of the mushrooming season, spawned when rain encourages growth of the fungi in the still warm earth. Professor Guest identified the dangers of two of the State's most dangerous varieties, the Death Cap fungus, Amanita phalloides and the Yellow Staining mushroom, Agaricus xanthodermus. "While commercially-sold mushrooms are safe, poisonings can occur when people gathering wild mushrooms inadvertently include toxic species," Professor Guest said. "Anyone who becomes ill after eating mushrooms should seek urgent medical advice and, if possible, take samples of the whole mushroom for identification." He said the most dangerous variety is the Death Cap, usually found near deciduous trees, especially around oaks. More information about poisonous varieties can be found on the Better Health Channel website and a Chief Health Officer's advisory is at www.health.vic.gov.au/chiefhealthofficer/ index.htm.

Evening bowls switched on Lilydale's Bowling Club will be able to host more evening games thanks to new lighting, funded through Council's Capital Developments Program. The club switched on its new 500W lighting system in early April, following their success in receiving a Capital Development Grant last year. Bowling Club President, Len Cumming, said the new lighting meant the club's two greens could both accommodate evening games and events. "Our corporate bowls have been quite successful, but because we only had one green we could use, now we can expand that," he said. "We had an evening where we invited all

the services, like the SES and the CFA, to come down and they had a barbecue and played under the lights as a thank you event. We can do more things like that. "Those lights are good enough to play world championships under - they're brilliant. We're exceptionally happy. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Len Cox, congratulated the club on the finished project. "Our sporting and recreation groups, such as the bowling club, are made up of volunteers who work tirelessly to give young people and adults the opportunity to get active and connected with their community," Cr Cox said. "Places like Lilydale Bowling Club are a hub

for the community, and this project will help to expand their already-popular barefoot bowls, corporate bowls and sessions for mums and bubs. "Congratulations to the bowling club, and to our other Capital Development Grant recipients. I encourage all sport and recreation groups to consider applying for this year's round of funding." The Capital Development Program offers more than $100,000 in grants to not-for-profit groups to improve sport and recreation facilities, and to support active participation. Election win may see upgrades Lilydale Football Club will receive $20,000 to go towards an upgrade of its facilities, if the Liberal Government is successful during November's state election. The club requires new coach's and playerinterchange boxes, due to inadequate shelter from the elements. Despite being one of the oldest active football clubs in Australia, and playing in the pres-

tigious Eastern Football League, the club is in need of a facilities upgrade. Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, said the upgrades would be a welcome addition for the club. "I am delighted that Matthew Guy and his team have made this exciting contribution to such an iconic and active sporting club," she said.

"If I am elected to represent Evelyn, I'll ensure our hardworking community groups and sporting clubs get the funding they require." Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, David Hodgett, praised Ms Vallence for her extensive work within the local community and her support of the Lilydale Football Club.

White foam was seen flowing down Dandenong Creek on the weekend, prompting water authorities to investigate. A white, foamy substance was seen flowing along Dandenong Creek in Heathmont on Sunday 20 May and clouds of the substance were also seen floating in the air. Dandenong creek flows from the Dandenong Ranges and winds through nearby suburbs before connecting with a river that empties into Port Phillip Bay. The Victorian Environment Protection Authority confirmed it had officers investigating to determine the source of the problem and Melbourne Water is also responding to the substance. In a Facebook post, First Friends of Dandenong Creek warned residents close by not to touch the substance which they described as smelling caustic. "This smells caustic and has been like this for 27hrs now and is concentrated enough that it's 4km in length - all the way down to Vermont," the post read. It remains unclear on what caused the foam though the EPA has warned that dumping in a waterway could incur an $8000 fine or prosecution in the courts. Anyone with information on the source of the pollution is urged to contact the environmental authority's hotline on 1300 EPA VIC.

NEWS

Plenty of positives, too The state te of

affairs Brad Battin MP Member for Gembrook Emerald Secondary College has been in the media a lot recently. However, despite Labor's continued refusal to provide urgent funding for school capital works,

there is a good news story to be told at Emerald. I have enjoyed a close relationship with the school over the years, working with principals past and present. Principal Jodie Doble's passion for the school is clear. In recent years' the school has boasted stronger academic results, which is reflected in its median ATAR results, improved study scores, and gains in NAPLAN. There is also improvements in student engagement, and surveys show that parents have confidence and pride in the college. Student intake at Year 7 has increased. All of this adds up to great news for families across the hills.

Despite the efforts of the students, staff, and school community, the buildings and facilities at Emerald need urgent work. Why are children at Emerald not given the same priority as students just a few kilometres away, in the Minister for Education's own electorate of Monbulk? While Monbulk College and Upwey High School - in the Minister's electorate - have enjoyed millions of dollars in capital works, the Minister for Education has ignored Emerald and its students. The school science block is simply not up to standard. Its deterioration has been well documented in this paper. There was hope the Andrews Labor Government would allocate funding in this year's

budget to fix the ongoing problems, but there was not one cent. James Merlino will brag that his government funded some maintenance work and extended part of the school, which was a previous election commitment. The reality is, after being in government for 15 of the past 19 years, Labor have shown they simply do not care about Emerald. I am proud of the Coalition's record of accomplishment in Emerald, with $6 million delivered to Emerald Primary School while in government. I look forward continuing me work with Emerald Secondary College to ensure all children in the hills have access to a safe learning environment - whether they are in prep or Year 12.

Cooler weather prompts chimney warning As the cooler weather kicks in, CFA is urging residents to keep themselves safe by checking and maintaining their fireplaces, chimneys, fireboxes and flues. Each year CFA sees an increase in the number of chimney fires from both fireplaces and solid wood heaters. CFA Manager Community Safety South East Region Jude Kennedy said over time there could be a build-up of creosote, a black tarlike residue, which was highly flammable and could clog up chimneys. "Creosote is not only caused by general use, but it can also build up quicker if you are using incorrect fuels, such as green wood or treated timbers," he said. To reduce the risk of fire starting from your fireplace or solid wood heater you should: Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions; Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually;

· ·

· Only burn dry, clean wood; leave your fire to burn after you have · Don't gone to bed or left the house. Mr Kennedy said residents should also have gas heaters inspected and serviced to ensure the safety of loved ones. "Every household should consider their fire safety practices and examine the potential risks around their home," he said. "Cooler weather conditions and the winter months are one of the riskiest times of the year for fires in the home and sadly, most of these fires can be prevented. "Chimney fires can quickly turn into house fires so the few minutes spent now could be one of the most important fire safety actions you take this winter. "Fireplaces can also be a fire hazard if fuels are allowed to fall out of the fireplace. A secure guard or fireproof screen should be used at all times. "If drying clothes please ensure they are po-

'Celebrate our volunteers' Council is encouraging residents to take notice and celebrate the volunteers in their community ahead of National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week runs from 21-27 May and thousands events will be held across the country to thank Australia's six million volunteers. This year's theme is 'Give a little, change a lot'. Upwey's Heath Pawley volunteers with environmental group Friends of The Sanctuary and said putting in a little time on a community project can inspire others to get involved. "I think it's a bit like the quote about the broken windows - if you don't fix the broken window, there'll be 10 the next week," Mr Pawley said. "I feel like looking after a space and getting visibly and actively involved gives other people licence to do that and take pride in their area. "It doesn't necessarily guilt them, but it makes them think, 'I could do that,' or 'I could fit that into my day.' You can do that and get a sense of pride about where you live." Kerry Griffin volunteers with Council's Meals on Wheels team in Yarra Junction and Lilydale's Salvos Op Shop, and said she got started with a recommendation from a friend who was also delivering meals to residents. "The community gains a lot from volunteers," Ms Griffin said. "I think, if people know someone cares, it lifts their spirits, makes them feel better about themselves and not so alone. "I think making an effort to help your fellow human is what life is about." Sonya Xerri has volunteered at Tecoma's Sherbrooke Cottage and the Parents Without Partners (PWP) Op Shop for more than nine years, and said she enjoys meeting interesting people through her work. "I'm at Sherbrooke Cottage for one day a week, and we assist the staff in running a day

"It is a really nice way to be able to have a social chat with people who don't have family or friends around them. "For people thinking of volunteering, I'd say just do it. Keep a sense of humour, be patient and have an open mind to help people.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said volunteers could be found in all corners of the community, each providing valuable skills and time. LETTERS Loss tough to fathom So sad to witness the loss of yet another of the once-beautiful Linden trees planted in Monash Avenue, Olinda, in 1935. The trees were originally planted as an avenue to commemorate returned local soldiers and others. The first of the trees was planted by one of Sir John Monash's sister (either Mathilde or Louise, the records do not specify) to commemorate the renaming of Main Road to Monash Avenue, in honour of Sir Monash, who had died four years earlier. Only one of that original avenue of trees survives today and it is also suffering from many years of neglect. So much of the rich architectural and landscape heritage of Dandenongs has been lost through a combination of general apathy and the absence of heritage recognition and protection.

Looking forward to staying independent for longer? Start talking about it now.

The community waits with considerable trepidation, the response of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Dr Peter Brennan, Olinda

Tree vandalism a low act With regard to fruit trees being cut down at Burnham Beeches ('Mail', 8 May). What a pathetic and useless act - every level of shame on the perpetrators. If the culprit is someone from a hills community, this is not how the hills community acts. Vandalism is not our way. The hills community should embrace and encourage those who wish to develop worthy attractions for tourists and locals alike. Tourism is at the core of many an individual's viable existence in this area. The Piggery is a great food destination that

has been embraced by locals. Refurbishment and re-establishment of Burnham Beeches as a tourist accommodation destination is a great result for the hills. If being left unattended and unloved, it would just rot away and a significant part of our hills history would be lost forever. Tough work cutting down fruit trees you weak individuals - whoever you are, whatever you believe - you are a disgrace to this community. I hope you receive the full brunt of whatever penalties apply for this low act. To Burnham Beeches management and staff, apologies are in order. Maybe we, as a community, could replant and replace. Howard Freeman, Upwey

This isn't the X-Files Who likes a good conspiracy theory? Apparently Bridget Vallence, the Liberal candidate for Evelyn, does. She's questioning the removal of the Lilydale level crossing. Ms Vallence should do her homework. The removal of the Lilydale level crossing was promised in the second term of the Andrews Labor Government and planning by the Level Crossing Authority is under way. This is not a conspiracy! Pam Vroland, Silvan

Australians are living longer. And that means there’s a lot more life to enjoy.

Cows are mums, too Whatever you’re looking forward to, such as finding ne ays to keep healthy, active and connected – the go ernment has programs to assist. There are also 20,000 extra high level home care packages to help you stay at home and independent for longer.

Given recently it was Mother's Day, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on the tragic plight of so many mothers on our farms. Dairy cows are forced to endure the agony of giving birth each year, only to suffer the anguish of having their precious new babies immediately stolen from them. Breeding sows are likewise compelled to give birth each year, but are never permitted to nurture or interact with their babies. Confined in body-hugging metal and concrete crates, they can take no more than one step backwards or forwards. Chicken mothers are never even permitted to see their adorable babies - which is probably just as well. How would layer mums feel seeing their sweet baby boys dropped live into mincing machines on day one of their lives? And how would broiler mums feel seeing their six week old babies crippled and in chronic pain because of the cruel manner in which they have been bred? We are not the only ones who love our children. All mothers do and none deserve to be treated in this cruel and heartless manner for nothing but profit. Bearing this in mind, why not make a vow to never again support these cruel and ruthless industries with your consumer dollars. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk

General Notices

More dramatic but still raucously funny, Deadpool 2 is a rare sequel that improves vastly on the original. Wisecracking superpowered mercenary Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) must assemble a team of mutant heroes to protect Russell (Julian Dennison), a fire-controlling mutant, from Cable (Josh Brolin), a time-traveling cyborg soldier. Reynolds is still a charming larrikin as Deadpool, and his allies, including newcomer Domino (Zazie Beetz), have fun, striking personalities. In Brolin's second great villain performance of 2018 (the other being Thanos in Infinity War), Cable is a fierce yet honourable antagonist with a tragic backstory. The action sequences are thrilling and the plot is streamlined, with swift pacing and a clearly-established objective, and contains gratifying themes of responsibility and the enriching effect of family. While still numerous, the gags in Deadpool 2 feel more focused, less puerile and more organic to the plot than in the original, which fits the sequel's wider scope and more poignant tone. It's just a shame that the film kills off Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Deadpool's wife, within the first twenty minutes for the sake of Deadpool's character development, which is disappointing (and known as the 'women in refrigerators' trope). Juggernaut, the secondary antagonist, is also very half-baked. Deadpool 2 expands on the great first film while preserving its endearing action-comedy essence. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Do you want to get in among the action but a cross country challenge isn't for you? Then, come visit the Adventure Dog Event Village for a fun filled family day! On 27 May 2018, Animal Aid will be holding the inaugural Adventure Dog event at the Wandin Park Equestrian Centre. The Event Village will be complete with a kids' carnival, giant slide, jumping castles, kids' rides, popcorn and face painting. There will be plenty for the grown-ups, too, with food trucks, a fully stocked bar, 12 market stalls and the Flaming Moe's as live entertainment! "We're going to be holding a Dog Show you can enter your dog in categories like longest tail, fluffiest ears, smallest paws and the golden oldie. It will be lots of fun and a chance to celebrate all dogs in all their shapes and sizes." says Elle Ammann, Community Engagement Manager. More than 300 participants have registered and collectively, have raised over $35,000! "We want everyone to come along and have a great day out with their pooches while cheering on the participants" says Elle Ammann. So bring your dog, come along and join in on a day of fun! "Adventure Dog - A Cross Country Challenge will be like Tough Mudder but with your dog" says Mark Menze, Animal Aid's Chief Executive Officer. "Participants will venture over the hills, under the logs, through the mud, they'll enter the bush and splash into the water. All while enjoying the views across the Yarra Valley towards Mt Donna Buang." Animal Aid has been helping animals in need for 70 years, we receive no government funding to operate and rely heavily on fundraising activities and community support. Ev-

AFL Yarra Ranges' Open Senior teams in the pre-game line-up.

Pictures: BETHANY HUTCHISON

Best of best head-to-head By Cameron Hutchison It was a weekend off from local footy as the best of the best played against each other in the WorkSafe Community Championships. The AFL Yarra Ranges travelled to Beaconsfield to take on the South East Football Netball League in Seniors and Under 19s; and, in the netball, Open and Under 17s. The senior football game was the curtainraiser to the VFL match between Richmond and Sandringham. Unfortunately, on the football field, the AFL Yarra Ranges had no success. The netball court, however, saw the Under 17s defeated, but the open team was triumphant. Seniors South East FNL 16.13.109 d AFL Yarra Ranges 10.13.73 Both sides came out full of run. South East got the jump on the Yarra Ranges before they made a late-quarter comeback. Scores at quarter time were SEFNL 5.2 to YR 4.5, taking a slim lead of three points into the second. The Yarra Ranges should have been in front but were wayward with their kicking. South East turned the screws in the second, holding Yarra Ranges to only 1.1 while they increased their lead to 18 points at half-time by kicking 3.4. Yarra Ranges were still in the game and just needed to regroup. They came out with more run in the third, but South East again got the early jump and kicked away with 5.1. Even though Yarra Ranges kicked 3.3, it would take a big effort to get the job done in the final quarter. The never-give-up attitude of the Yarra Ranges is to be commended but wayward kicking in general play and in front of goal meant the South East were just far too strong on the day coming away with a solid 36-point win. Although the final score wasn't flattering for the Yarra Ranges, the game was played at a really high standard by both sides and some better kicking at goal by the Yarra Ranges would have seen a better reflection of the difference in the two competitions. South East FNL Goal Kickers: Tim Gunn (Berwick; 4 goals), Ryan Jones (Cranbourne; 3 goals), Marc Holt (Cranbourne; 1 goal), Ash Smith (Berwick; 2 goals), Luke Sheppard (Berwick; 1 goal), Trent Cody (Narre Warren; 1 goal), Brad Scalzo (Narre Warren; 1 goal), Mitch Cotter (Doveton; 1 goal) Best Players: Tim Gunn (Best on Ground; Berwick), Michael Riseley (Berwick), Michael Collins (Narre Warren), Mitch Cotter (Doveton), Troy Tharle (Cranbourne), Brad Scalzo (Narre Warren) AFL Yarra Ranges Goal Kickers: James Charge (Olinda Ferny Creek; 3 goals), Patrick Bruzzese (Wandin; 1 goal), Kody Busoli (Woori Yallock; 1 goal), Ben Monkhorst (Woori Yallock; 1 goal), Chris Gra24 MAIL

ham (Yea; 1 goal), Ethan Greenall (1 goal), Jake Matthews (Woori Yallock; 1 goal), Dylan Wilson (Olinda-Ferny Creek; 1 goal) Best Players: Patrick Bruzzese (Best on Ground;Wandin), Robbie Allen (Woori Yallock), Marcus Hottes (Olinda Ferny Creek), James Charge (Olinda Ferny Creek), Ethan Greenall (Olinda Ferny Creek), Jake Pedder (Emerald) Under 19s South East FNL 12.11.83 d AFL Yarra Ranges 3.7.25 The AFL Yarra Ranges found it tough going against a talented Under 19s side in the South East. It was a low scoring first quarter but South East had a lead of 15 points going into the second. The Yarra Ranges were held at bay in the second and could only kick three behinds to the South East's 2.3. The lead had blown out to 27 points and was going to be a hard job from here. South East found the goals in the third, with another 2.4 to The Ranges 1.1 and it was game over. South East got a few junk time goals and finished with 5.1 to 1.3 to register a good win. The AFL Yarra Ranges boys never gave up, but South East was fittingly a two goal per quarter better side on the day. They got off to a good start shooting 13 goals to 8 and in Netball and advantage of 5 goals is always hard to run down. The second quarter was tight with 23 goals being shot and neither side really getting an advantage. The margin had only grown to 6 goals and it was going to be a tough second half. The third quarter did not disappoint with it being touch and go all quarter but Yarra Ranges managed to increase their lead to 8 goals. South East FNL got a run on in the last out shooting the Yarra Ranges 14

They certainly got the early lead shooting 13 goals to 4 in the first quarter and it was a game of

chase down the lead after that. The second quarter was tighter but Yarra Ranges could not get the turnovers they needed to eat into the South East lead. The second half was a low scoring even test of skills with the Yarra Ranges outscoring the South East by 10 goals to 9 but he damage was done in the first quarter and South East came away with a good win. Away games in the cold, wet, slippery mud this weekend. Teams travelled to Gembrook, Mount Evelyn, Belgrave, Seville and Blackburn. A very wintry day of sport. A mixed bag results wise, but no game played without the club's renowned fighting spirit. Go Hawks Under 9s A great team effort by the Hawks. They moved the ball well and applied plenty of tackling pressure to our opposition. They showed how our training is improving their skills and really enjoyed the game. Best: Eamon, Emma, Jack, Arley Monbulk v Gembrook Under 10s Well done boys for working hard in the cold and wet. The kids keep improving on their game and skills, while enjoying themselves each quarter. Best: Jed, Lucas, Benjamin, Ethan, Riley Monbulk v Gembrook Under 11s They were set for a tough day against the competition leaders. They worked hard in the first half to concede just three scoring shots, but certainly felt plenty of pressure after the first break. A long season, but they are improving every week. Monbulk 0.0.0 v Mt Evelyn 10.11.71 Under 12s The team worked well in the first half, but definitely worked harder in the second to keep Gembrook scoreless. Solid winners from hard work. Monbulk 8.16.64 v Gembrook 0.0.0 Under 14s Blue A trying day at Wesburn in the wet, slippery conditions saw us not physically able to sustain the pressure of the opposition. Monbulk 3.2.20 v Wesburn 6.6.42 Best: Kody T., Alex M., Nick T., Logan B., Riley F Under 14s Green Wet and slippery against a good team. They

MOTORING

Staying safe this winter Winter isn't coming, it's here! RACV is warning motorists to be prepared and take extra care when driving in winter conditions. Driving in severe weather can be challenging and dangerous, so motorists should try to avoid the three big mistakes of winter driving. Poorly prepared vehicles, speeding and a failure to treat the icy conditions with respect are a disastrous cocktail that can lead to accidents and damage to vehicles. Poor preparation: Amazingly, RACV research has found that tyres were often neglected, with one in five cars on Victoria's road having at least one unroadworthy tyre. Many car owners also forget to look at other critical items, too. Check your tyres, windscreen wipers, the battery, lights, brakes, heater and cooling system before heading off. Slush and mud were particularly hard on vehicles, so drivers should get their cars serviced regularly. We can't stress enough how important tyres are to a car's safety. In slippery conditions like you'd find in the snow, tyres need to be in tip-top condition. Tyres must have plenty of tread depth and no damage. They should also be inflated to the correct pressure. But, be aware, this can vary from car to car. The recommended minimum tyre pressures are usually listed on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb or glove box. Driving too fast for winter conditions: Remember, it takes much longer to stop in the wet, so don't follow other cars too closely

It's important to follow some important road safety tips this winter. 180748 when it is raining or if the roads are wet. Increase the gap between you and the car in front to allow for this. If you're driving in the high country and encounter snow, drive to the conditions and take it easy. Even if the snow has been cleared, the road is still likely to be slippery and black ice is always a danger. Use the brake, accelerator and steering smoothly. Always remember that the speed limit is just that; a limit.

It is not telling you the speed you must drive at. Drive at a speed that you are comfortable with and don't be pressured to speed up by other motorists. Not reacting to the worsening winter weather: If it is foggy, don't put your lights on high beam, because this makes the road harder to see. Instead, use low-beam, as this keeps the lights on the road. Use front and rear fog lamps if the condi-

tions are bade enough, but remember the rules about when they can be used. In wet weather, use your air conditioner to prevent your windscreen from fogging up. However, if visibility is so limited that you can't see the edges of the road, or other vehicles at a safe distance, it's time to pull over and wait for the conditions to ease. At some alpine locations, snow chains are compulsory. VicRoads have an information page on the rules regarding their use.

Infrastructure boost must be timely to beat congestion

Major works are planned to reduce congestion in Victoria. 180901 number of votes in the RACV's recent Growing Pains report, and with the State Government also announcing funding for a light rail option, the Federal Government now needs to work with the State Government to deliver a good public transport connection for the ChadstonMonash Rowville areas," Mr Prosser said.

Meanwhile, regional road-users will also benefit from upgrades to the Princes Highway, both east and west. "The end is in sight, with the planned completion of the duplication of the Princes Highway East. Locals and tourists have endured years of delays in never-ending roadworks," Mr Prosser said.

"RACV's Australian Road Assessment Program had found that the final states between Traralgon and Sale were at two and three-star standard. "Completing the duplication should provide a much safer three or four-star road, like those elsewhere on Victoria's regional highway network." Mr Prosser said the RACV is also pleased to see new, innovative measures to assist senior Australians remain in their homes longer and receive additional support to ensure these people enjoy a higher quality of life. "We don't want more divisive politics, with the state and federal government unable to agree and proposing different projects, such as light and heavy rail, or East West Link versus North East Link," Mr Prosser said. "Victorians want our governments to work together to deliver the best projects for Victoria, which cater to the needs of our growing population."

1187559-RC24-15

According to the RACV, Federal Budget 2018 offers Victorians $7.8 billion towards vital funding for infrastructure projects for the future - something which has been previously lacking in Victoria. RACV's General Manager of Public Policy and Corporate Affairs, Bryce Prosser, said the critical point moving forward will be when the funding is delivered. "The commitment by the Federal Government to key projects such as Melbourne Airport Rail link and North East link are great news for Victorians," he said. "These projects have been in RACV's top priority list for years, and it is great to see funding commitments to help make them happen." Also included in the Budget are key rail projects, including electrifying the Frankston line to Baxter, Geelong regional rail duplication between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, as well as $475 million for planning of a Monash rail link. "A Monash rail link received the highest
