'Time to change' By Derek Schlennstedt In a bid to address homelessness in the Yarra Valley, Tim Herlihy is drawing on his own experience, and the knowledge of others to help solve the burgeoning problem. Guided by the knowledge of Holy Fools CEO, Neal Taylor, Yarra Ranges Councillor, Tim Heenan, and Ian James, the group has agreed that there is a clear lack of low cost affordable housing across Yarra Ranges. Mr Herlihy has also drawn upon his own experience of offering low cost affordable housing, when last year he was issued a building compliance report that meant he had to renovate the low-cost accommodation he provided in Mount Evelyn. With the costs coming in at over $100,000 Cr Heenan said it was understandable that individuals find it so difficult to offer affordable housing. Looking at planning, and the legislation surrounding offering low cost affordable housing, Mr Herlihy said something would have to change. "I got talking to people like Neal Taylor, Tim Heenan, Mark from (housing organisation) Anchor and various experts in the field," Mr Herlihy said. "The picture that's emerged for me very strongly is that there isn't a shortage of dwellings in our rich society, but there is a shortage of compassion and willingness and connection, and I think there is a whole range of ways of providing affordable accommodation not just for homeless people, but also those who are at risk of becoming homeless." Some of those ideas include freeing up restrictions placed on having a number of unrelated individuals in the one house. "I think there are many opportunities, such as you can have up to four unrelated people under a single lease ... with a head tenant and co-tenant, and that's in fact the situation I found myself in, rather than have the dwelling reclassified at hundreds of thousands dollars of expense." "It's addressing existing housing and not saying we have to go and build a bunch of newer affordable housing, but utilising what's already there."
From left; Tim Herlihy, Yarra Ranges Councillor, Tim Heenan, Holy Fools CEO, Neal Taylor and Ian James, are working towards solving homelessness in the Yarra Ranges. 180763 Picture: Derek Schlennstedt. "I think there's a lot of potential to fine tune the legislation and a number of different avenues to free up what is existing." According to Neal Taylor the problem also lies with the lack of long term accommodation. Mr Taylor said there were three tiers of accommodation - crisis accommodation, transition accommodation and then long term accommodation. "There is such a shortage of long term accommodation that the transition accommodation is log jammed, and that has an effect back on the crisis accommodation ... the system has stalled," Mr Taylor said. "We also have no long term accommoda-
tion in the Yarra Ranges, nothing for youth, nothing for families, nothing ... once they've gone from crisis to transitional there's nowhere else for them to go, we have a real problem that people aren't moving on." A report by Anglicare in April revealed a chronic shortage of affordable rentals across Australia, with less than 0.01 per cent of rental properties found to be affordable for a single person on Newstart. As part of the report, Anglicare examined all the properties listed for rent on realestate.com. au on a particular day and assessed whether each property was affordable and suitable for 14 types of households on low income. Mr Herlihy said that the aim wasn't to build
new houses but use existing granny flats and share houses to fill the gap of long term accommodation, which Mr Taylor said would open up space in transitional housing. "There would be about 15-20 per cent of people who would be perfect for longer term accommodation ... it would release the transitional and mean more people could move into transitional housing," Mr Taylor said. "Genuinely there are families out there who would be perfect for this." In the 2016 Census a map was released which identified homeless people in each suburb of the state and revealed that for the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges 250 people were identified as being homeless.

Up to 300 riders are expected to tackle the jumps and bumps at the Lilydale Conquer the Valley BMX competition on Sunday, 27 May. The Conquer the Valley competition is the biggest event of the year at Lilydale Lynx BMX Club, which will have local, state and even interstate riders testing themselves against the best in the sport. Attracting over 1000 people, both riders and spectators alike flock to the popular competition. Club president, Steve Ralis, said that BMX has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia and is one of the few sports where total family participation can take place. "Kids start from three-years-old and they go right up to competing up to 50 plus ... basically the whole family comes and races on the day then you get the pros, and they compete on the same day," Mr Ralis said. "We've got three pro riders and i'm hoping they all do compete though one is injured." The competition comes as efforts to improve riding tracks around the Yarra Valley are being undertaken by Yarra Ranges Council which in its 2018-19 draft budget on Friday, 27 April, proposes the construction of a BMX Pump Track at Mount Evelyn. Mr Ralis said if ti went ahead he hopes it will attract more people to the family friendly sport, and would act as gateway to take on competitive BMX riding. "It's a bit of a quiet sport so not everyone knows about it ... though it is growing," he said. "That track is kind of more of something to fill a hole but people that do go there may find they like it and want to take up the sport. "It's more of a gateway; people go there, have a bit of a play and find that they like it and may want to start at an actual track." Having grown from 45 to over 100 members, Mr Ralis said the sport was great for the entire family, though kids who were quieter were able to get a lot out of the sport too. "It's a great sport for kids," he said. "We find it really helps those who are quieter, they can put their helmets on and can go into their own little world until they feel they're ready to chat to the other kids ... we find by the end of six months they come out of their shell and are quite open." While Mr Ralis describes the Lilydale track as "flowing" he said there were plenty of thrills and spills and that the more experienced riders often jump over the parts where the younger kids may not. "It's quite a flowing track where you have to pump the bike through it ... actually all about
pushing the bike and absorbing the bike and pushing it out the other side - it's quite a technical track," he said. "There's still a place and time for the pros, because they can use many of the jumps." Mr Ralis invited anyone interested in the sport to come along and watch the best BMX riders in the state battle it out. Those interested in the sport were also invited to come and have a chat at the clubrooms on Wednesdays when practice takes place from 6pm. Conquer the Valley takes place from 10.30am - 2pm, Sunday, 27 May, at the Lilydale BMX club.

Find invisible friends By Derek Schlennstedt
New facial recognition technology may be the key to help find missing person Tej Chitnis. His car was also captured on CCTV at the
Net gain for platypus as ban is planned By Derek Schlennstedt Australia's most unusual mammal, the platypus, has received protection from killer opera house nets, which ensnare large numbers of platypus each year. The Labor Government announced that, from 1 July, opera house nets will be banned in all public and private waters throughout Victoria, with reforms that will benefit native animals that live in and around waterways including platypus and turtles. Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford, said opera house nets in Victoria will be phased out with new open top lift nets now more readily available to replace them. "Opera house nets have been placing our platypus populations at risk and so it's time for us to embrace different fishing gear that will catch just as many yabbies without impacting our precious wildlife," Ms Pulford said. Up until now, many fishers purchased opera house nets to target yabbies unaware they couldn't be used in public waters in Victoria. The nets trap and prevent air breathing animals, like platypus, from escaping. In January a platypus drowned after it became trapped in an opera house net in the Wandin-Yallock Creek and was found by a local boy near the Seville Recreation Reserve. The change to open top lift nets can be used in both public and private waters and are proven to be effective yabby catchers. As part of the changes, a one-for-one tradein is planned, whereby fishers can trade in their old opera house nets for free 'wildlife friendly' open top lift nets. Trials have indicated that wildlife friendly gear such as open top lift nets and hoop nets
Keep cars locked Police are reminding residents to keep houses, garages and vehicle locked after a number of break-ins. Between 9pm on 17 May and 8.30am on 18 May, an unknown offender has gained entry to a residential address in Yarra Glen, then located a set of keys. Subsequently, the offender has stolen a 2015 black Subaru station wagon with registration numbers: AEF 208. On the same night, 17 May, an unknown person believed to be the same offender gained entry to an unlocked vehicle. No items were taken but it is believed to be linked to the previous incident on the same night. Both vehicles were unlocked at the time of the offence and Yarra Glen Sergeant, Richard Coulson, is reminding people to ensure both their houses and vehicles are locked, with any valuables out of sight. "Residents have to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times, and any items of value are removed or stored out of sight," he said.Sgt Coulson also noted that anyone who might have had a similar incident to report it to police. Anyone with information regarding both the incidents is urged to contact Yarra Glen Police on 9730 1296

The Labor Government announced that, from 1 July, opera house nets will be banned in all public and private waters throughout Victoria. can actually catch more yabbies than opera house nets when fished actively. The Victorian Fisheries Authority will work with the fishing tackle sector, anglers and environmental groups on an awareness campaign around 'wildlife friendly' yabby gear leading up to 1 July next year. It is currently illegal to use opera house nets in, on or near Victorian public waters, and DELWP is working with several authorities to

Under the Wildlife Act 1975 there are various penalties associated with taking or being in possession of protected wildlife or using prohibited equipment which is up to a maximum of $38,0562, and/or 24 months imprisonment. New facial recognition technology may be the key to help find missing person Tej Chitnis. Rather than utilising billboards or printing thousands of photos and plastering them to sign posts and building, the Missing Persons Advocacy Network is now harnessing the power of Facebook facial recognition technology to help identify missing persons. In April, the Missing Persons Advocacy Network (MPAN) and WhiteGrey Australia launched 'invisible friends', which encourages people with Facebook to 'friend' the profiles of 10 individuals who disappeared between 1991 and 2016 - one of which is Tej Chitnis By friending these people the facial recognition technology searches the backgrounds of each photo and video posted by the user, in the hopes of identifying and locating the missing person. One of the 10 missing people featured in the campaign is Tej Chitnis, who has been missing since 27 April 2016 when he was last seen by his family at his Burwood East home that morning before setting off in his silver Golf car.
Green Street and Maroondah Highway intersection on the day he disappeared. The plight of Tej and his family has touched the hearts of Healesville people with the family never giving up on seeing him again. Over the years, posters have appeared regularly, and a billboard erected by the Missing Persons Advocacy Network (MPAN) with support from The Mobile Billboard Company in January 2018, reminded the community of the ongoing search. Two years on and posts on his helpfindtejchitnis facebook page, urge people to utilise the new technology by friending Tej on facebook. "This isn't his usual Facebook page which you might already be friends with, it's a page set up for him by MPAN to use the face recognition technology." Tej's car has never been found, his mobile phone is switched off and his bank account has not been touched. Anyone who has any information is asked to phone Box hill Police on 8892 3200. 'Celebrate our volunteers' Council is encouraging residents to take notice and celebrate the volunteers in their community ahead of National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week runs from 21-27 May and thousands events will be held across the country to thank Australia's six million volunteers. This year's theme is 'Give a little, change a lot'. Upwey's Heath Pawley volunteers with environmental group Friends of The Sanctuary and said putting in a little time on a community project can inspire others to get involved. "I think it's a bit like the quote about the broken windows - if you don't fix the broken window, there'll be 10 the next week," Mr Pawley said. "I feel like looking after a space and getting visibly and actively involved gives other people licence to do that and take pride in their area. "It doesn't necessarily guilt them, but it makes them think, 'I could do that,' or 'I could fit that into my day.' You can do that and get a sense of pride about where you live." Kerry Griffin volunteers with Council's Meals on Wheels team in Yarra Junction and Lilydale's Salvos Op Shop, and said she got started with a recommendation from a friend who was also delivering meals to residents. "The community gains a lot from volunteers," Ms Griffin said. "I think, if people know someone cares, it lifts their spirits, makes them feel better about themselves and not so alone. "I think making an effort to help your fellow human is what life is about." Sonya Xerri has volunteered at Tecoma's Sherbrooke Cottage and the Parents Without Partners (PWP) Op Shop for more than nine years, and said she enjoys meeting interesting people through her work. "It is a really nice way to be able to have a social chat with people who don't have family or friends around them. "For people thinking of volunteering, I'd say just do it. Keep a sense of humour, be patient and have an open mind to help people.
"Come and try it for a few hours, and see how it makes you feel good." Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said volunteers could be found in all corners of the community, each providing valuable skills and time. LETTERS Football fantastic I would like to share the pleasure and privilege my friends and I felt whilst attending the Healesville Junior Football Club (HJFC) Girl's Under 16s footy game at Worowa Aboriginal College in Healesville on Mother's Day. We all received a warm welcome as well as a rose and chocolates. The setting was that of an Australian oil painting, with the players running the field, braids flying behind them. The impromptu entertainment of the Worowa Student frantically chasing the escapee Retriever all over the oval at quarter time, as well as the mob of about 20 kangaroos passing in the distance. Both teams fought a fair and equally challenged match. This was not only a memorable spectacle for myself but also for my friends visiting from the UK. What a pleasure! What a privilege!
Thank you! Alison Gommers Healesville
Virtual unreality Labor's announcement of the Don Valley/ Haining Farm Leadership School is great news. I know a young person who has participated in this program and found it very rewarding. It seems a shame that it has been done at the expense of education and understanding of agriculture, that Haining Farm was gifted to Victorians for. Unfortunately it appears in our modern academic virtual reality world, providing food for our fellow humans is regarded with little importance. Talking of virtual reality, the computer generated, theoretical Haining Farm Fire Risk Assessment is an interesting example. The inputs used to assess the increased fire risk to the local community after the revegetation of

104 acres (315,000 trees etc.0 of Haining Farm, resulted in a much-publicised result of 0% increased fire Risk. This 0% result was gained by the inputs used or allowed. The fire experience locals and, importantly, the local fire history that they would bring to this assessment were excluded/banned. Are the local residents' lives, opinions and fire experience below the value of a computer model, with controlled inputs? Fire risk must be acknowledged by conservationists and then you can have intelligent conversation weighing up nature's requirements, human requirements and our responsabilities to both. I quote the Deputy Premier on the announcement of the Bushfire Risk Assessment for Yellingbo Conservation Area ... "In order for this bushfire rish assessment to be effective it must be underpinned by the local knowledge and the expertise of landowners and the community".
Australians are living longer. And that means there’s a lot more life to enjoy. There are also 20,000 extra high level home care packages to help you stay at home and independent for longer. There are lots of ways to live the life you want.

Deputy Premier, why not honour your words? My community deserves it. Daryl Cochrane Yarra Junction.
No ranting, but misreadings A reply to Rick Houlihan and others on Haining Farm. The three responses to my letter - 'Me too, frustrated, angry' (Mail 17 April) - show that 'Mail' readers can debate these matters without resorting to ranting. However, there is one of several misreadings of my letter that probably should not go unchallenged. In 'Residents abide by findings' (Mail, 15 May), Rick Houlihan infers that I am one of those who prefer to 'ignore the threat of bushfire'. Anyone who has witnessed the extensive bushfire protection measures I have taken at home as an experienced firefighter would totally disagree. And, if Rick reads the published submissions to the Royal Commission report, he will see that I made a substantial submission based on my 40 years of living in a particularly extreme bushfire risk zone at the top of the Don Valley. What I fear most of all is the determined firebug, who can strike anywhere, at any time. But — continuing on the subject of bushfire — I actually attended the meeting of Haining Farm project objectors at Yarra Junction. I was bemused to find, firstly, that it was held in a primary school only across the highway from dense bushland (so much for a morbid fear of bushfire). Secondly, a particularly outspoken concern of the meeting was ongoing stock access to the Yarra (I also noted the rhetoric of various political figures who were in on the act). Moreover, Kaye Bonuda-Smith, in her letter 'One size myth' ('Mail', 8 May), makes no specific mention of bushfire but, instead, warns of a very different fear: the invasion of Haining Farm by voracious 'deer' requiring a giant fence. Finally, Rick took particular exception to my reference to the 'removal of all the existing vegetation' as the attitude of some to bushfire prevention. This was, in fact, a pointed reference to the attitude that seemed reflected in Clare Haywood's opinion (Mail, 10 April) that 'National Park = bushfires = wildlife extinction'. John Whiteoak
Help support appeal For over 50 years, The Salvation Army and the Australian community have united to bring hope where it's needed most through the annual Red Shield Appeal. The Red Shield Appeal is the lifeblood of The Salvation Army. It ensures that we can continue to support the women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, the people trapped in drug and alcohol addiction, the youth who are sleeping on our streets, and so much more. It is the Salvos' main fundraiser, helping keep the doors open to our many support services. But with more and more people from all walks of life turning to us for assistance, this year we will need as much help as we can get. So we are calling on community groups, sporting clubs, workplaces, families and individuals to get on board and volunteer for the Red Shield Appeal during the month May. The power of giving By Wendy Williamson A good deed can be as simple as a friendly smile or a chat with a lonely neighbour. So says Robyn Davey. The long-time Yarra Glen volunteer believes that if you do something for somebody, chances are they will in turn be nice to someone else. You would be hard pressed to find a more giving person than Mrs Davey. She has volunteered at the Yarra Glen Op Shop for 30 years. She also helps out at her local Uniting Church, where she is treasurer. She is a backbone of the church's community dinner program, which sees the church hall open each Sunday night for anyone who wants to come along for a meal. Over the years she has cooked and delivered countless meals, driven people to appointments and babysat for local families. Mrs Davey's efforts are all the more admirable because she is also a full-time carer for her husband, Chris, who has Parkinson's disease. All that volunteering has now been acknowledged with Mrs Davey named as one of five finalists among thousands of nominations in the Power of the Country awards. Electricity distribution company Powercor organises the awards in partnership with Geelong and Essendon football clubs to acknowledge the selfless work individuals do for their community. Mrs Davey said she couldn't believe it when she heard she had been nominated, let alone that she was a finalist. "There must be people more deserving," she said. Accompanied by Chris, she was given VIP treatment at the AFL Country Festival match at the MCG on 19 May, where the winner was announced as foster carer Elly Clark of Carisbrook. When to her surprise and joy, Mrs Davey was announced as the runner-up, she was characteristically modest. "I wouldn't be able to do the things I do without the backing of a wonderful husband," she said.
Think before you pick Autumn conditions have created ideal growing conditions for poisonous mushrooms, according to Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Charles Guest. Professor Guest said people should avoid gathering wild mushrooms from their own gardens because of the risk of collecting poisonous varieties, which may appear very similar to edible. The warning coincides with the arrival of the mushrooming season, spawned when rain encourages growth of the fungi in the still warm earth. Professor Guest identified the dangers of two of the State's most dangerous varieties, the Death Cap fungus, Amanita phalloides and the Yellow Staining mushroom, Agaricus xanthodermus. "While commercially-sold mushrooms are safe, poisonings can occur when people gathering wild mushrooms inadvertently include toxic species," Professor Guest said. "Anyone who becomes ill after eating mushrooms should seek urgent medical advice and, if possible, take samples of the whole mushroom for identification." He said the most dangerous variety is the Death Cap, usually found near deciduous trees, especially around oaks. More information about poisonous varieties can be found on the Better Health Channel website and a Chief Health Officer's advisory is at www.health.vic.gov.au/chiefhealthofficer/ index.htm.

Playspace for the park
A national day of thanks for State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers, Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day, has been declared for 23 May. Landmarks across the country will light up in orange in celebration, including the MCG, Bolte Bridge and Melbourne Star. Closer to home, simply by adding a dash of colour to your winter wardrobe you can show your appreciation of the volunteers who pull on orange overalls to support the community when disaster strikes. If orange isn't your colour, you can say thanks to VICSES volunteers on facebook or twitter using the hashtag #thankyouSES and #WOWday. There's much to be thankful for. VICSES volunteers responded to more than 31,000 requests for assistance last year. The Healesville unit alone assisted at 414 incidents, 355 of which were storm related. That's a lot for a small team of 25 volunteers, whose territory extends as far as Yarra Glen and Toolangi - the old Healesville Shire boundary. By far the most callouts locally are due to storm damage, according to Healesville SES Deputy Controller (Admin) Monica Hayes. "Nearly everybody has a story of a tree down - at their neighbour's if not across their own drive," she said. She loves the variety of SES rescue operations, which extend across the whole gamut from storms, floods and fires to road crashes and even the occasional downed hot air balloon. "You never quite know what is going to come through when your pager goes off," Monica said. She will be happy to see the community showing their appreciation by donning or-
A detailed design has recently been completed for the $1million Queens Park Playspace upgrade in Healesville. Community feedback has helped shape the design, with features including natural elements, artistic and creative spaces and some traditional playground structures. Healesville residents were invited to share their ideas for the new playspace as part of community workshops held from February to June last year. Council also engaged the Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA) on the project to enhance the playspace's connection to place and incorporate the history of the local area. Community feedback identified that the original $330,000 budget for the project could not deliver on all of the local community's aspirations and vision for the new playspace. In response to this, Council applied for further funding through the State Government's Growing Suburbs fund, and as a result, the project budget grew to $1 million, with Council and the State Government each contributing $500,000. The additional funding has enabled further play experiences, identified by local children during consultation, to be included in the design. These include a flying fox, a 'giant' swing and a tree-house style play unit reflecting the request "to climb high into the sky". Council will continue to work with HICSA and other key community organisations and artists to develop, design and install public art pieces for the playspace. Council has allocated an additional $30,000 for these artworks, which will reflect local community values and reference Healesville's cultural heritage. Construction of the playspace is expected to begin by the end of September 2018.

Warmth for the winter By Wendy Williamson As winter's chill begins to bite and you bunker down with a blanket or two, spare a thought for those who are doing it tough. Cold days and freezing nights bring misery to the many people who can't afford to turn their heaters on - or don't have a heater or so much as a roof over their heads. It is with these vulnerable people in mind that Anglicare Victoria and Le Pine Funerals have teamed up to run the 'Warm a heart this winter' appeal. They are asking you to support those less fortunate by donating clean, warm items, such as blankets and beanies, scarfs and socks, gloves, jackets and sleeping bags. Canned food items, with at least six months to expiry date, may also be donated. Offices of Le Pine Funerals across Victoria are drop-off points for the goods, which will then be passed onto Anglicare for distribution to those in need. In the Yarra Valley, Le Pine Funerals has offices at Healesville, Lilydale and Croydon where goods can be donated in the boxes supplied. Jenny Smith from Le Pine Funerals Healesville said she welcomes donations. "It's a very worthwhile cause. The cold weather has hit with a vengeance, so I am sure any warming items will be very much appreciated," she said. "Join us in supporting Anglicare's important work this winter by dropping off your donation, and know that you have helped to make someone's winter more bearable."

Duke award from prince By Kath Gannaway For 17 year old Jessica Myers-Denton, receiving her Duke of Edinburgh Award at Government House on 6 April was the culmination of four years of dedication to the project. That she received it from a fellow Duke of Edinburgh Award recipient, and that it was Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, was the icing on the cake! It was amazing ... a big thing for me that it was presented by Prince Edward," Jessica said. "He spoke of his experience of the award and congratulated us, saying what a big achievement it was. "When he spoke of how he almost gave up during some of the camps and projects, it really related to our own experience of the Award." That experience started for Jessica at Upper Yarra Secondary College (UYSC) when Jessica was in Year 8. The school has a very strong Duke of Edinburgh Award history and hearing from others in the program prompted Jessica to give it a go. As part of the program which took almost four years to complete, Jessica went to Cambodia in 2016 with the UYSC as part of a humanitarian trip that required her to raise $4000 to take part. She also went to Western Australia earlier this year for a month volunteering at a dolphin centre looking at how tourism is affecting dolphins. Jessica did the bronze, silver and gold components of the award back to back, finishing the final year on her own after transferring to Mount Lilydale Mercy College in Year 10. She said taking part in the program had given her a sense of self. "I discovered who I was, what I was about, what I love to do," she said. "I was more reserved when I started and a bit worried about doing it, but I have had to be out of my comfort zone a lot and doing things I would not normally do so I have gained a lot

"There are so many different things you can do. If you want to learn a new skill you can take a class or do it yourself, so it depends on the different way you approach the Award. "You just get so much out of it, so definitely I would say it's worth it."

Hannie’s at the heart By Derek Schlennstedt In Hotel Sorrento, Hannie Rayson reaches into the heart of family relationships to reveal the multiplicity of factors that both bring family members together - and drive them apart. A potent tale of family loyalty and the importance of blood ties, Ms Rayson's awardwinning play will come to The Healesville Memo on 26 May. The well-loved Hotel Sorrento, which premiered onstage in 1991 was made into a feature film in 1995 and explores some immediately identifiable terrain for many audiences. Tapping into the theme of Australian identity, Ms Rayson said that although the play is 18-years-old, it still remains relevant today. "It's really about a changing Australia and what it means to be Australian ... coming from a place where we really were a monoculture to something where Australia is becoming a vibrant and diverse place for many cultures," Ms Rayson said. The story follows three sisters who grew up together in the seaside town, Sorrento. Hilary lives in the family home in Sorrento with her father and 16 year-old son. Pippa, a business woman, is visiting from New York, and Meg, a successful writer, returns from England. When the three sisters are reunited after 10 years apart they again feel the constraints of family life. A semi-autobiographical book written by
middle sister and expat Meg triggers the familial tensions and dramas that eventuate. "It's about three sisters, all of whom grew up in Sorrento, one of them lives in New York, and another in London," Ms Rayson said. "The one in London has been nominated for a Booker prize for a novel she has written, and the novel is really a very veiled account of a family incident that none of the sisters have ever talked about ... it really details something that is a family secret. "So when she comes back to Sorrento just before the family all confront her on why she could write something on which she could never talk about." The play explores those delicate undercurrents of memories and family secrets and how the shadows of the past catch up with the three decidedly different sisters. This May be drawn into Hotel Sorrento's enthralling story of a family in crisis, pulled together after a long period apart. Hotel Sorrento will play at the Healesville Memo on 26 May. Director Denny Lawrence, and Playwright Hannie Rayson will present the play Hotel Sorrento at the Memo in Healesville.
THE ARBOUR and THE ORRERY at TarraWarra museum By Derek Schlennstedt New work from sound installation artist James Hullick will be featured in his exhibition, THE ARBOUR and THE ORRERY, at TarraWarra Museum of Art from 12 May to 15 July 2018. The exhibition will accompany TarraWarra's major survey of the work of Edwin Tanner. Hullick, a renowned sound art-installation artist who has regularly performed globally at notable festivals, design galleries, arts centres, state theatres and museums, will present two new works which are conceptually and aesthetically in dialogue with the works of Edwin Tanner. The first work, THE ARBOUR OF DOORS, is an enclosed speaker cave, made of recycled audio-visual materials which visitors can enter and experience the softly spoken recitations of Edwin Tanner's poetry. The second work, THE ORRERY OF HUMAN DESIRES, is a mechanical model of rotating speakers and analogue synthesisers which will articulate orbits of human desire and emit a soundtrack of madrigal voices, echoing music
listened to by Edwin Tanner in his studio. The two works have been conceived of as 'instruments' for expanding audio-visual practice. Exhibition curator, Anthony Fitzpatrick said that many of Edwin Tanner's works emerged from his experience as a professional engineer who was intimately involved in the development and construction of machinery. He said that Hullick's new works vividly bring to life the kind of whirring, twittering and buzzing circuitry and infrastructure which appear in some of Tanner's most memorable compositions. "Hullick's inventive use of auditory technologies seeks to push the boundaries of the sonic arts and, like Tanner, his projects often challenge conventional perspectives and habitual ways of looking (and listening)." "The two intriguing audio-visual installations in THE ARBOUR and THE ORRERY continue Hullick's exploration of the dynamic interactions between sound, space and action," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

Deadpool 2 is a winner
Movies at Healesville and Warburton The Memo, Healesville
Artist James Hullick with his "THE ORRERY OF HUMAN DESIRES". 180609
More dramatic but still raucously funny, Deadpool 2 is a rare sequel that improves vastly on the original. Wisecracking superpowered mercenary Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) must assemble a team of mutant heroes to protect Russell (Julian Dennison), a fire-controlling mutant, from Cable (Josh Brolin), a time-traveling cyborg soldier. Reynolds is still a charming larrikin as Deadpool, and his allies, including newcomer Domino (Zazie Beetz), have fun, striking personalities. In Brolin's second great villain performance of 2018 (the other being Thanos in Infinity War), Cable is a fierce yet honourable antagonist with a tragic backstory.
The action sequences are thrilling and the plot is streamlined, with swift pacing and a clearly-established objective, and contains gratifying themes of responsibility and the enriching effect of family. While still numerous, the gags in Deadpool 2 feel more focused, less puerile and more organic to the plot than in the original, which fits the sequel's wider scope and more poignant tone. It's just a shame that the film kills off Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Deadpool's wife, within the first twenty minutes for the sake of Deadpool's character development, which is disappointing (and known as the 'women in refrigerators' trope). Juggernaut, the secondary antagonist, is also very half-baked. Deadpool 2 expands on the great first film while preserving its endearing action-comedy essence. - Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

Grand donation for RSL By Derek Schlennstedt After another generous donation to the Yarra Glen RSL from the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel, two Yarra Glen students will be sent to a summer camp and the rest of the money donated to the Anzac Appeal. Grand Hotel owner Craig Barnett met with Yarra Glen RSL Sub-Branch president Stephen Shortis, secretary Ed Bartosh and Appeals Manager of RSL Victoria, Peter Smith, to donate the $1000 to the group. This marked the third donation of $1000 to the RSL and was much appreciated by the members. Mr Bartosh said the fund helped veterans, widows, and their families, when in need of financial assistance for transport or bills and would help send two local disadvantaged students to an annual Portsea summer camp in January. "The RSL sponsor a week down at the Portsea Camp in January ... it's for the veterans and their families," Mr Bartosh said. "We're just really grateful to Craig for having provided this opportunity for the welfare fund, it's really generous." Half of the donations will also go toward veterans' welfare funds such as the Anzac Appeal. "This money has been donated to the Anzac Appeal ... this is the way we fund veteran welfare so this is very important, and is a lovely things for local businesses to support the local charity in there area," Appeals Manager of RSL Victoria, Peter Smith said. "We are delighted that Craig has donated that sum of money ... it's very much needed and it will be put to good use." The donation from the Grand in Yarra Glen is the latest in a series of donations made by the hotel, which raises money dur-

New art gallery By Wendy Williamson A passion for Indigenous culture has prompted Christine Joy to launch her new Healesville gallery, Hearth Art, with a particularly stunning exhibition. 'One Sky: Art from the Desert' features the work of Warlukurlangu Artists, a thriving Aboriginal-owned art centre in Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. Also included are a couple of paintings by artists from Yuendumu who attend Healesville's Worawa College. Christine, who has a strong background in nature-based education with an art focus, is delighted to be back in Healesville after an absence of many years. "It's a lovely feeling of coming home. About 30 years ago I lived and worked around the corner, where my mother ran the Old Mechanics Institute Gallery," she said. Christine spent several months working at Warlukurlangu and is thrilled to be represent-
ing the artists at her new gallery at 208 Maroondah Highway. Profits from the sales of their work go toward supporting the artists and their community. A dialysis clinic, a men's museum and Aussie Desert Dogs (rescue pets) are among the projects the Warlukurlangu directors have elected to support. Most of the artists are women, but the exhibition also includes works by the eminently collectible artists Shorty Jangala Robertson and Steven Jupurrurla Nelson. "The artists are extraordinary. They use ancient iconography but give it their own interpretation with a very bold and colourful palette. That's what Warlukurlangu is known for," Christine said. 'One Sky' was launched at Hearth Art on Saturday 12 May and will run until 28 June. Christine said that at Hearth Art she plans to specialise in contemporary art, including but not solely Aboriginal art.

"Hearth Art actively supports beginning artists and those who struggle to gain access to exhibition opportunities," she said. "We believe that art spaces, like a true hearth, can be a place for sharing resources, building community, inspiring meaningful conversation and story-telling." The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am - 5pm.
Yarra River circuit rolling forward A walking and cycling circuit along the Yarra River suggested by the community will be designed and planned over the coming year with funds in the 2018-19 draft Council Budget. The Yarra River Circuit was proposed by Yarra Glen residents through the 2016 People's Panel, which allocated funding from the sale of the town's former Maternal and Child Health centre. Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister, said a concept plan and design for the trail would be developed in coming months. "We're going to look at how to connect the trail and the river, providing safe places to walk and creating a loop with items of interest along the way," Cr McAllister said. "It's exciting that there's a lot of community interest, and it's really good to see this idea finally coming to fruition. "The conversation around trails in the valley and more broadly in Yarra Ranges means that it's going to be connected to a whole lot 24 MAIL

am eat raffle and a cash draw every Friday night, all the proceeds from the raffle go to a local charity. "About every eight to 10 weeks have enough money to give $1000 to a local charity."
People's Panel member, Hayley Davies, said the circuit would be a drawcard for visitors and those coming to sporting games at the recreation reserve. "Obviously, Yarra Glen is quite up-andcoming. We're getting more and more features that make us more attractive to the wider community and I think this will be an asset - especially with the football club down here," Ms Davies said. "We get representatives from different towns all over the shire and the eastern suburbs here every weekend, and how fantastic for them to get to experience it with the locals. "I'm so excited. I think it will be fantastic." First stage funding for the circuit ($316,000) is allocated in Council's draft 2018-19 Budget. The balance of the project funds will be allocated in the 2019-20 financial year. For more information about the draft Budget, visit bigpicture.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.
National Volunteer Week runs from May 21-27 and the theme, 'Give a little. Change a lot' reflects the impact that volunteering can have, not only for AN organisation and other people but also the impact it can have on the individuals donating their time. For 49-year-old Rebecca Buchanan, from Healesville, volunteering gave her a new lease on life. In the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, two of her four children were killed, along with her 37-year-old brother. After facing years of grief and trauma she moved in 2016 from Kinglake to Healesville where she began volunteering at Healesville Sanctuary. Since then Ms Buchanan said she has found some peace. "I was living in a dark little world of grief and horribleness," Ms Buchanan said. "Volunteering has given me a new lease on life and people. Everyone is so nice and I've made some good friends. "I look forward to coming here and I go home absolutely knackered and actually sleep, which is a nice change. "I will never get over it or forget it, but coming here lets me have peace." Rebecca is one of over 300 hundred volunteers at Healesville Sanctuary, who, for this National Volunteer Week are being recognized for their important contribution to the Sanctuary. Since signing up Rebecca has been trained in the volunteer roles of Visitor Host, Tour Guide and Animal Encounters. Healesville Sanctuary Volunteer Coordinator, Barb Wal, said that the the volunteers were a vital part of the Sanctuary community and that "The Sanctuary could not thrive without their help". "Volunteers make such a difference to our visitors experience at Healesville Sanctuary and are a great support for our staff," Ms Wal said. "They inspire the community by connecting people to our wildlife, helping Zoos Victoria reach their mission of fighting extinction." To become a volunteer at Healesville Sanctuary, send your enquiry to zvvolunteers@zoo. org.au mailcommunity.com.au

AFL Yarra Ranges' Open Senior teams in the pre-game line-up.
Pictures: BETHANY HUTCHISON
Best of best clash By Cameron Hutchison It was a weekend off from local footy as the best of the best played against each other in the WorkSafe Community Championships. The AFL Yarra Ranges travelled to Beaconsfield to take on the South East Football Netball League in Seniors and Under 19s; and, in the netball, Open and Under 17s. The senior football game was the curtainraiser to the VFL match between Richmond and Sandringham. Unfortunately, on the football field, the AFL Yarra Ranges had no success. The netball court, however, saw the Under 17s defeated, but the open team was triumphant. Seniors South East FNL 16.13.109 d AFL Yarra Ranges 10.13.73 Both sides came out full of run. South East got the jump on the Yarra Ranges before they made a late-quarter comeback. Scores at quarter time were SEFNL 5.2 to YR 4.5, taking a slim lead of three points into the second. The Yarra Ranges should have been in front but were wayward with their kicking. South East turned the screws in the second, holding Yarra Ranges to only 1.1 while they increased their lead to 18 points at half-time by kicking 3.4. Yarra Ranges were still in the game and just needed to regroup. They came out with more run in the third, but South East again got the early jump and kicked away with 5.1. Even though Yarra Ranges kicked 3.3, it would take a big effort to get the job done in the final quarter. The never-give-up attitude of the Yarra Ranges is to be commended but wayward kicking in general play and in front of goal meant the South East were just far too strong on the day coming away with a solid 36-point win. Although the final score wasn't flattering for the Yarra Ranges, the game was played at a really high standard by both sides and some better kicking at goal by the Yarra Ranges would have seen a better reflection of the difference in the two competitions. South East FNL Goal Kickers: Tim Gunn (Berwick; 4 goals), Ryan Jones (Cranbourne; 3 goals), Marc Holt (Cranbourne; 1 goal), Ash Smith (Berwick; 2 goals), Luke Sheppard (Berwick; 1 goal), Trent Cody (Narre Warren; 1 goal), Brad Scalzo (Narre Warren; 1 goal), Mitch Cotter (Doveton; 1 goal) Best Players: Tim Gunn (Best on Ground; Berwick), Michael Riseley (Berwick), Michael Collins (Narre Warren), Mitch Cotter (Doveton), Troy Tharle (Cranbourne), Brad Scalzo (Narre Warren) AFL Yarra Ranges Goal Kickers: James Charge (Olinda Ferny Creek; 3 goals), Patrick Bruzzese (Wandin; 1 goal), Kody Busoli (Woori Yallock; 1 goal), Ben Monkhorst (Woori Yallock; 1 goal), Chris Graham (Yea; 1 goal), Ethan Greenall (1 goal), Jake mailcommunity.com.au

It was a low scoring first quarter but South East had a lead of 15 points going into the second. The Yarra Ranges were held at bay in the second and could only kick three behinds to the South East's 2.3. The lead had blown out to 27 points and was going to be a hard job from here. South East found the goals in the third, with another 2.4 to The Ranges 1.1 and it was game over. South East got a few junk time goals and finished with 5.1 to 1.3 to
register a good win. The AFL Yarra Ranges boys never gave up, but South East was fittingly a two goal per quarter better side on the day. South East FNL Goal Kickers: Myles Currie (Beaconsfield; 3 goals), Kane Tyrrell (Berwick; 2 goals), Jack Docherty (Beaconsfield; 2 goals), Luke Bettio (Beaconsfield; 2 goals), Max Sheppard (Narre Warren; 1 goal), Brodie Entwistle (Beaconsfield; 1 goal), Harrison Paul (Beaconsfield; 1 goal) Best Players: Tom Miller (Narre Warren), Brodie Entwistle (Beaconsfield), Jafar Ocaa (Pakenham), Connor Guley (Beaconsfield), Myles Currie (Beaconsfield), Jahvon Bergman (Berwick) AFL Yarra Ranges Goal Kickers: Tallin Brill (Mt Evelyn; 1 goal), Jordan Hattwell (Mt Evelyn; 1 goal), Hunter Greenall (Olinda-Ferny Creek; 1 goal) Best Players: Daniel O'Dwyer (Best on Ground; Yea), Dante South (Gembrook-Cockatoo), Braden Wood (Emerald), Matthew Bri-
erley (Mount Evelyn), Jackson Merrett (Mt Evelyn) Open Netball AFL Yarra Ranges 48 d South East FNL 43 The AFL Yarra Ranges has an amazing record in the Open Netball in the WorkSafe Championships and their record lives on with another win by five goals over South East FNL. They got off to a good start shooting 13 goals to 8 and in Netball and advantage of 5 goals is always hard to run down. The second quarter was tight with 23 goals being shot and neither side really getting an advantage. The margin had only grown to 6 goals and it was going to be a tough second half. The third quarter did not disappoint with it being touch and go all quarter but Yarra Ranges managed to increase their lead to 8 goals. South East FNL got a run on in the last out shooting the Yarra Ranges 14 goals to 11 but their run was left too late in the end. AFL Yarra Ranges Goal Shooters: Sinead Lumsden (Wandin; 22 goals), Georgia Marsh (Mt Evelyn; 14 goals), Madeline Hargrave (Woori Yallock; 12 goals) Best Players: Serena Gibbs (Best on Court; Mt Evelyn), Sinead Lumsden (Wandin), Jacqui Black (Mt Evelyn) South East FNL Goal Shooters: Bianca Sanzaro (Beaconsfield; 18 goals), Alexandra Duff (Tooradin-Dalmore; 14 goals), Lauren Spinks (Pakenham; 11 goals) Best Players: Caitlyn Cooke (Pakenham), Bianca Sanzaro (Beaconsfield), Sara Duncan (Tooradin-Dalmore) Under 17 Netball South East FNL 30 d AFL Yarra Ranges 21 The South East FNL proved too strong for the AFL Yarra Ranges young netballers. They certainly got the early lead shooting 13 goals to 4 in the first quarter and it was a game of chase down the lead after that. The second quarter was tighter but Yarra Ranges could not get the turnovers they needed to eat into the South East lead. The second half was a low scoring even test of skills with the Yarra Ranges outscoring the South East by 10 goals to 9 but he damage was done in the first quarter and South East came away with a good win. South East FNL Goal Shooters: Tahlia Coates (Cranbourne; 16 goals), Mia Washington (Pakenham; 10 goals), Yasmin Dickson (Cranbourne; 4 goals) Best Players: Melissa Webster (Doveton), Charlotte Petelinek (Beaconsfield), Tahlia Coates (Cranbourne) AFL Yarra Ranges Goals Shooters: Sophie Hennessy (Wandin; 13 goals), Shona Gesler (Alexandra; 5 goals), Keely Farrow (Healesville; 2 goals), Monique Lee (Woori Yallock; 1 goal) Best Players: Mia Sudomirski (Best on Court; Woori Yallock), Sophie Hennessy (Wandin), Alana McGurgan (Woori Yallock) Tuesday, 22 May, 2018

Election promise Lilydale Football Club will receive $20,000 to go towards an upgrade of its facilities, if the Liberal Government is successful during November's state election. The club requires new coach's and playerinterchange boxes, due to inadequate shelter from the elements. Despite being one of the oldest active football clubs in Australia, and playing in the prestigious Eastern Football League, the club is in need of a facilities upgrade. Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, said the upgrades would be a welcome addition for the club. "I am delighted that Matthew Guy and his
team have made this exciting contribution to such an iconic and active sporting club," she said. "If I am elected to represent Evelyn, I'll ensure our hardworking community groups and sporting clubs get the funding they require." Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, David Hodgett, praised Ms Vallence for her extensive work within the local community and her support of the Lilydale Football Club.

Wednesday 8 May: Johnston/Hyndman Classic: Two very valuable and popular members have been sponsoring this event for many years (a sincere thank you from all members, gents!). The beauty of this is that they come up with a different competition every year. This year's event was Ambrose 'Shambles'. I won't even attempt to describe it. Suffice to say, Dave Wappett and Tony Bickley understood it best to come away with the winner's voucher (Dave scored a massive 44 points and Tony had 38). The organisers A.J. (37) and Hymie (35) came in second; perhaps their best effort (together), in their own competition! The ball count went down to 37. There were NTPs on 'every' hole and Club Captain Cross snared four of them. Greedy! (He also won the raffle; doubly greedy!). It must be noted, though, 'Old Man River' Hubbard won three of them. Saturday 19 May: Foursomes Championships: This is one of the most prestigious and challenging board events in any club's golf calendar. The most effective pairing was Ben Lord and Mr Bickley, as they grossed a very impressive 109, over 27 holes. This also continued Tony's recent hot form, as he teamed with a different partner on Wednesday to win that competition. The Nett champions were The Young Ones, Angus Smith and Liam Kay. Their Nett score of 102.25 was only bettered by the Gross winners, and they cannot win both! Great work, Angus and Liam, you're the future! Balls went down to Nett 109.25. Daily NTP winners were Peter Bell (3rd), John Robbo (9th), Murchie (12th) and President Hall (15th).

Road safety takes care Ms Cockfield said it was crucial to reach out to regional areas, with deaths on rural roads increasing last year, despite an overall reduction statewide. "Victoria's road safety partners continue to work on our Towards Zero plan for a future where no-one dies or is hurt on our roads," Ms Cockfield said. "There is no acceptable number of deaths on our roads and we all have a role to play in creating a safer road environment by making safe choices when it comes to driving." A team of TAC representatives will have a colourful presence at the comedy roadshow events, helping audiences get home safely with free breath tests before they leave. They will also help people understand how Victoria's Towards Zero approach is reducing road trauma and how making safe choices can contribute to a safe road system.
The TAC has formed an unlikely alliance, in the name of promoting road safety. 181043
1187559-RC24-15
The Transport Accident Commission is asking regional Victorians to 'stand up for road safety', as it tours the state in partnership with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The TAC has joined forces with the MICF Regional Roadshow for a second consecutive year in an effort to highlight road safety issues in regional Victoria. The unlikely partnership will see road safety take centre stage at 19 comedy shows in Victoria's north west, south west, central and north east regions, as well as Gippsland, until July. With motorists now five times more likely to die on regional roads, the TAC's presence at the shows will remind country Victorians that everyone has a role to play in reducing roads deaths and serious injuries in their own backyard. TAC Road Safety Lead Director, Samantha Cockfield, said travelling with the comedy roadshow allowed the TAC to get country drivers thinking about road safety, and highlight factors contributing to road trauma in rural areas. "On country roads, people travel longer distances and at higher speeds, meaning when mistakes happen, the consequences are often severe or very serious," she said. "Excessive speed and fatigue are two major factors in fatal road crashes in country Victoria." Last year, 258 people died on Victorian roads and 156 of those lives were lost in regional areas.

Stylish future ahead Toyota has embarked on an exciting new era of automotive design that is resulting in stronger, more attractive styling for its vehicles, according to one of the company's Global Design Executives. Kevin Hunter - president of Toyota's North American design studio, Calty - said Toyota's global president Akio Toyoda had challenged the company's designers to create cars that spark people's emotions. "Toyota's designers are car enthusiasts and absolutely passionate about designing desirable cars, so we are answering Mr Toyoda's challenge with cars such as the latest Corolla, Camry, C-HR and Prius," Mr Hunter said. Mr Hunter, visiting Australia to discuss Toyota's design process, said Toyota had previously relied on 'safe' designs that relied heavily on consumer studies and a high degree of internal consensus. "But, with Mr Toyoda's challenge to develop style that stirs people's emotions and makes them want to drive our cars, Toyota's design efforts are less reliant on consensus now. "We have empowered our designers and engineers to develop a creative and passionate vision of future mobility. The goal is simple, yet profound: develop future generations of products that connect on an emotional level. "As a result of this new global commitment, we expect to develop the most capable, most exciting generation of vehicles the company has ever produced." Mr Hunter said the new era of Toyota design was evident in vehicles like the new Corolla hatch being launched in August as well as the latest versions of the Prius hybrid-electric hatch, C-HR and SUV and Camry sedan. "It's not a coincidence that Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platforms under-

"These new models are pathfinders for the styling and dynamic benefits of TNGA, qualities that will be further developed as new platforms and vehicles are introduced to Toyota's global range in the months and years to come. "TNGA has redefined Toyota's approach to vehicle development and manufacturing, resulting in vehicles that can inspire confidence and deliver genuine fun-to-drive performance.
"From an engineering and manufacturing perspective, TNGA is focused on items that are largely out of sight. "Their lower centre of gravity, more rigid frame, new suspension and greater use of high-strength steel provide direct benefits that result in balanced handling and a more engaging drive. "Hand-in-hand with dynamic improvements, TNGA also liberates vehicle design, enabling rooflines and bonnets to be lower and
resulting in each model being visually distinctive with more appealing proportions. "In short, TNGA is the key that's unlocking an exciting new era of Toyota design, giving designers the freedom to produce stronger, more attractive styline." Mr Hunter cited the stunning FT-1 concept produced by Calty as a symbol of Toyota's design future ... a spiritual pace car for a changing, evolving Toyota.
