THE LATEST IN FOOD

There were a few bleary eyes this Monday as one of Noosa's favourite festivals came to an end. Fabulous autumn weather, great food and entertainment and a wonderful line up of events made for a successful Noosa Food and Wine Festival with more than 70 sold out events. Also to be congratulated this week are Noosa's many volunteers. As we celebrate National Volunteers Week we acknowledge them the engine room of the region. In very sad news we farewell Noosa's most iconic and worldfamous festival. After more than two decades, the Noosa Festival of Surfing's co-founder Phil Jarratt announces his family will not be continuing the event in 2019. For a town built on its surfing roots and one of only 10 World Surfing Reserves, one must ask how this could

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

JARRATT'S KICK OUT OF SURF FESTIVAL The future of the Noosa Festival of Surfing is in question as festival founder Phil Jarratt Communications steps away from the event it began in 1998. Festival director, CEO and Phil's daughter Sam Smith said the family was very sad to say goodbye to the festival but increasing event costs, dwindling sponsorship and other obstacles made it unsustainable. She said challenges had arisen as a result of the Noosa Council's new event policy, restrictions from surrounding stakeholders, and site construction issues due to increasing Noosa beach erosion. Noosa Malibu Club have held the license for the festival since 2009 and are looking at options for its continuation. Club president Craig Johnson said news of the Jarratt's pulling out was a"a big shock and a shame". "The Jarratts have done a fantastic

involved in most of the festivals over its 21-year history, since her father Phil cofounded it in 1998. "We have seen the event evolve from a four-day longboard classic to the world's largest surfing festival with competitors from around the world," she said. "We have had many highs but also many lows, and the financial struggle of these past few years has taken its toll. The passion that our family shares for this event is what has kept it running for so many years. The decision to not continue has been one of the hardest our family has had to face." Phil Jarratt said it was a sad day for his family but nothing was forever. "I just hope that the legacy is not lost, that Noosa will continue to celebrate its surfing roots and its proud position as one of only 10 World Surfing Reserves," he said. Read more in Phil Jarratt's Life of Brine on page 38. ●

CHEF SECRETS SHARED AT FESTIVAL The days of chefs keeping their secrets to themselves are gone according to celebrity chef Miguel Maestre who, at the Noosa Wine and Food Festival on the weekend, said lessons learnt by Noosa chefs would be one of the lasting legacies of the event. Miguel said one of the values for local restauranteurs would be the inspiration gleaned from visiting national and international chefs. While he and other visitors were in Noosa to enjoy local produce not available in their hometowns and to bring their families on holiday to a beautiful destination. Fabulous weather, some of the best chefs in Australia and great entertainment made for a successful Noosa Food and Wine Festival over the weekend. A Tourism Noosa spokeswoman said there were more than 70 events on offer and most were sold out. Events took place at the new Festival Village in Noosa Heads Lions Park, under the Noosa Tipi on Noosa Main Beach, along Hastings Street at the Long Lunch on Saturday, in signature restaurants throughout Noosa and in produce and brewery trails throughout the hinterland. This year's return to the Noosa Heads Lions Parks proved to be a popular option on Saturday and Sunday. Cooking demonstrations and master classes were crowded, there were queues at the pop up restaurant stalls and guests were keen to taste and buy local products from the produce pavilion. ●

COVER STORY

"OUR FAMILY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TECHNOLOGY!" C BY HOLLIE HARRIS

o-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs never let his own children have an iPad and Microsoft co-founder Mr Bill Gates insisted on a limited amount technology use with his own children. These experts recognised that the very technology they were selling to the world would affect our well-being so significantly and shielded their own children from it. Screen addiction has reached epidemic proportions in Australia since the 2007 release of the first iPhone and although many parents were cautious in allowing their kids access to the new fad, most kids today own several devices with unlimited internet. Psychologists are quickly learning how dangerous smartphones can be for teenage brains with research revealing that an eighth-grader's risk for depression jumps

27 percent when he or she frequently uses social media. Google itself unveiled an initiative targeted at addressing tech addiction just last week. Former Queensland teacher, Rachel Downie, who is now an online child safety and anti-bullying advocate says parents are unaware of about 80 per cent of what their teen engages in on the internet at home. Rachel, the founder of anti-bullying website Stymie, issued a room full of concerned parents at Sunshine Beach State High School recently one big wake-up call. Technology is taking over our kids lives at vast rates and its time to take the power back. Safety Rachel revealed results to a survey of more than 20,000 students over the last five years, asking "what's something you do on the internet at home that you know you're not allowed to do?" (See image for results)

Ms Downie said 51 per cent of children, mostly year 8 boys, had viewed pornography or other illicit material, while one-fifth of respondents admitted to bullying, trolling and stalking for fun. "In schools I go into, kids in years four, five and six have their own devices, and I have to tell you the amount of harm that is being done to kids and to each other at that age in terms of the cyber bullying is out of control," says Rachel. This really has become an issue about your child's future mental health and safety. Our kids are growing up with a distorted understanding of sex. Sharing nude pictures online have now become common practice. Rachel says that 20 percent of the girls who took part in her study have been asked to share nude images and nearly 100 percent of these girls obliged. There are now apps which hide

forbidden apps to prying eyes - some look like calculators and Snapchat has a 'My Eyes Only' feature which can be activated to hide extra private content from others. Even though a social media account is on private, the public can still see photos quite easily. Especially if you connect your Instagram to other social networks. Instagram actually warns about this in their privacy settings: "If someone with a private profile shares a photo or video to a social network (like Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and so on) using Instagram, the image will be visible on that network and the permalink will be active. In other words, the photo will be publicly accessible by anyone who has access to its direct link/URL" - Instagram. Online gaming is more concerning than you may think too - the game might be clean but the gamers might not be.

some slack lines in the backyard. · Check their devices. This is your right. Even if they bought it, you still have a parental right to know what your child or teen is doing. Locking their phone and apps from you is unacceptable. Perhaps give them a 24-hour warning before you do this - plenty of time to ditch anything inappropriate and start a clean slate. · Most importantly, we really need to teach our kids how to manage their usage themselves and why it's so important so they can function as adults without us around to 'police' them. · Consequences? Technology is a privilege, not a right. Set up some clear rules and consequences. Perhaps sneaking online gets a 'one week, zero tech' consequence. Give them a clear day and time consequence ends and encourage them to make it. · Drama? You can always extend it for another day if they make a fuss about it. If they break the rule again, give them a whole month. Don't expect this to be easy! · Spread the word. Tell other parents you are taking the power back and getting your kids back into real life. If your kids are having a sleepover, don't be afraid to mention to the parents that you have a few tech rules. You may just inspire some change in their household too. · Be a good example to your kids and detox yourself off the tech-juice too.

When we aren't looking, this is what our kids are up to.

Rachel Downie addresses a room full of concerned parents who are hanging off every word. The generation gap has never been wider. used to do. When it causes conflict in the household. Solutions "It's about being a grown-up and being the boss and getting your techno power back and saying, 'look we're going to set some boundaries around this stuff at home," Rachel says. · Admit to your child you made a mistake letting things get this far. Tell them you love them enough to make some big changes and that you value family more than technology. · Adequate parental supervision and keeping conversations open is key. Remember when we used to keep the family computer in the lounge? An opendoor policy is a good one. If they need the door shut, we have to ask why? · Talk about respecting their bodies and not being pressured to share intimate pictures. They may not understand what their

images are 'saying' in reality or that people can screenshot them to keep. Make sure they know it is unacceptable to ask anyone to share an intimate picture Do not enter into the "trust" debate with your kids. "I can't believe you don't trust me!" This is not about whether or not you trust them, this is about mental health, safety and living in the real world. With all the notifications these days, keeping devices out of their rooms is vital for decent sleep. If your child spends hours a day on a device or a game, they will need your help to fill up this time. The creative pathways in their brains are fast asleep at this point, so expect they won't be able to think of a single thing to do instead. This does improve over time. You may eventually find your kids playing out in the street again or climbing trees. Older kids might pick up a musical instrument or string up

Bullying, sexual and explicit text and imagery, online stranger, normalisation of sex and rape, addiction, self-doubt and low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, exhaustion and a lack of reality are just a few of the realities our online kids are dealing with. Is it worth it? Sadly, joy and satisfaction from everyday life is becoming harder for our young techheads to find outside a screen and childhood depression has risen to alarming rates. Youth suicide has now surpassed motor accidents as the number one cause of death. Take an honest look at your child or teens relationship to technology. It is our moral responsibility as parents to give them a better future than this. There is big business in keeping us hooked and these incredibly wealthy companies prey on the addictive nature of their products to sell to your kids. Remember, we all fell down the rabbit hole together and if we want our kids to be okay, we need to pull them out of it together. The National Crime Agency warns that the latest gaming craze Fortnight is open slather to paedophiles. One mother claimed her 12-year-old son was offered V-Bucks (online money) to perform a sex act during playing Fortnight. Not to mention that experts say Fortnight is touted as the most addictive game ever made. Grand Theft Auto is well worth having a play of yourself to see the level of violence your kids are growing up with. The violence and sexual vilification of women in GTA can now be played out in first person. In GTA, a gamer can purchase a woman to perform different sexual acts and after purchasing her, the gamer can choose to kill her — and actually is incentivised to kill her to get his money back. At present, GTA V is one of the most popular video games in the US where, one in four women will experience some form of sexual violence by the time she turns 18 and one in five young women on college campuses will experience sexual assault. Addiction Aussie kids are now spending an average of 33 hours a week online or gaming. That's a full-time job! A Qualtric and Accel survey revealed that some millennial social media users are checking their device up to 150 times each day. Rachels study revealed that many kids are sneaking online after parents are asleep, some set alarms to wake during the night. Social media and games ping alerts on your kids' devices all through the night and many are only surface sleeping. Rachel says this is an unchartered time for parents and most are unaware of how far down the spiral their kids have gone. "[They say] 'I'm embarrassed and don't know what to do ... my son is so addicted to gaming," Rachel says. "Lots of single mums say they're frightened of their son due to physical threats if she doesn't let him play," she says. Seek help if you are in this situation. Signs of addiction "If your child can't walk away from your device when you ask them to, if they are stressed and don't seem to be able to engage in anything else other than things on those devices, well then, they have an addiction problem," Ms Downie said. The World Health Organisation this year recognised internet gaming disorder (IGD) as a mental health condition. Losing interest in real life activities. Sneaking online or begging/bargaining. Emotional outburst during usage or when time is up. Not engaging in activities or sports they

PFaFA replied they had never wanted a so-called "pokie palace" but would consider poker machines in a future clubhouse if that was what the community wanted.

The future of the Peregian Beach Surf Club would be determined by the results of an online survey, a Peregian Family and Friends Association (PFaFA) spokesman told Saturday's public meeting attended by more than 100 people which brought together two sides at loggerheads on the issue. "The results of the survey will direct where we go from here," PFaFA spokesman Ollie Hooper, a local father of a young nipper, said. The opposition side said they couldn't accept the results of a survey that could be filled in by anyone in Australia any number of times. While not denying it PFaFA said computer IP addresses could be identified and those outside the area deleted. Most of the people attending the people admitted to being confused about what was happening with the facility and the club. The two sides that have emerged in the debate comprise six community groups divided three aside. One side comprised of Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCA), Peregian Beach Community House and Peregian Beach Surf Club was represented at the meeting by PBSC's Rob Neely, a highly awarded lifesaver and former member of NHSLSQ. The opposition led by PFaFA includes Peregian Beach Business Association and Peregian Springs Residents Association.

Rob said his group had a 10-point strategic plan to operate the surf club in its current though architect renovated building in a village-scale club. He said they planned by next season to get lifesaving going and get a nippers program running, funded with proceeds from Peregian Beach markets, Surf Lifesaving Queensland contributions and fundraising activities. He said the group planned to include oceanography elements into the club for nipper education, whale watchers and tourists. Expensive elite training activities would not be included in the club, he said. Council's spokeswoman told the meeting the current surf club was located on state government land held in trustee by Noosa Council. Any new development or redevelopment would require council approval under the Noosa Plan. She said the surf club's current location was zoned reserve for lifesaving purposes while the parkland was a reserve for recreation purposes. Native title existed on the parkland area which was also in a state government zoned coastal management district in an erosion prone area, all of which would require consideration in any proposed application. A letter read out from SLSQ CEO George Hill supported Noosa Heads SLSC's provision of services at Peregian Beach and recognised NH SLSC as the only current entity affiliated with SLSQ and with trained staff capable of running the club. â—?

GREAT DAY FOR DOGS BY MARGARET MACCOLL There were action hero dogs, fairy dogs and lots of everyday dogs that tramped along Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, on Sunday for the RSPCA Million Paws Walk. RSPCA Noosa manager Nicole Cleary described the event as "a great family day out" and said they expected to raise about $9000 toward managing the animal shelter at Noosa. Melony Brests compered the event which included several competitions. WInner of the person who looks most like their dog contest was Mike Fitzgerald, who was a keen advocate of people finding their pets at shelters, and his best mate Finnigan."He came from pet rescue," Mike said of Finnigan. "We've had him a few years. He's a lovely dog. "They're great dogs at the shelter. They're temperament tested when you get them. "It's such a waste." ●

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE STARS If all the volunteers stopped working Noosa would probably grind to a halt. This view raised by a volunteer last week was demonstrated when one volunteer-fuelled festival ended and another began. As the Noosa Wine and Food Festival was wrapping up its successful weekend volunteers from the Noosa Alive Festival were out in force distributing the festival program which was hot off the presses. This Friday volunteers will be acknowledged for their work by Noosa Council which is also highlighting their efforts through six short films made to celebrate National Volunteers Week held from 21-27 May. Council teamed up with local film-maker Klaus Horner, who volunteered to make the short films. A Council spokeswoman said the films highlighted the amount of work community members do. BURN OFF PLANNED AT CASTAWAYS BEACH The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct a planned burn within the East Weyba section of Noosa National Park, bordering Flagship Court and Seafarer Court Castaways Beach, on the 22nd of May 2018, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction/ conservation management program for

parks and forests. As a result, smoke may be seen in the areas surrounding Marcus Beach, Castaways Beach, Sunrise Beach and Peregian Beach. The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas. This will help reduce the intensity of any

The Peregian Beach Digital Hub move a step closer to becoming operational on Tuesday when Noosa Council held a special meeting to discuss the awarding of tenders for office tenancies and registration co-workers. Five months since Council adopted its Establishment Phase Implementation Plan and two months employing Digital Hub director Chris Boden council officers have recommended Council award tenders for tenancy of the Digital Hub to Atmail Pty Ltd, Alkira Software Pty Ltd, Commtract Communication Services Pty Ltd and PB Research and Development Pty Ltd. A council report states a call for tenders and marketing campaign attracted interest from 58 technology businesses and entrepreneurs employing about 50 people with forecasted growth to 75 jobs within a 12-18-month period. The tenancy mix is expected to comprise private office tenancies for one 'Established' and three 'Emerging' technology enterprises on the upper floor and approximately twenty co-work memberships for individual entrepreneurs on the ground floor, the report says. The report said the key risk for this project is losing the qualified respondents due to delays or alternative location competitive offers. It recommends tenders be awarded and final lease negotiations made to reduce the risk. ●

IT’S SCONE TIME Chef and Country Noosa president Martin Duncan plans to host Scone Time, a monthly morning tea for older locals, beginning on Tuesday 12 June in Cooroy. Martin said working with CWA ladies and local businesses, the event was set to reignite life into local halls and help older people feel connected to their community. Inspired by 96-year-old UK resident Georgina, who, with no family remaining decided to involve herself with a local charity that hosted tea parties for people over the age of 75, Martin saw an opportunity to connect with older people

and utilize some beautiful old venues around the Sunshine Coast. "I saw an interview with Georgina and thought that surely the isolation that older people feel is a worldwide issue," he said. "Our beautiful region has so many community halls, that, back in the day, would have come to life on Saturday nights for dances, special events and weddings."Martin hopes local businesses will sponsor a monthly gathering, donate their time or simply pay it forward for a guest (and carer) to attend. For bookings or more information phone 0473 902 261. ●

A USC researcher using ancient stories to make climate change relevant to Australian and Pacific Island communities has been honoured for his contributions to geography. Professor Patrick Nunn was awarded the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland's JP Thomson Gold Medal on 1 May for promoting and stimulating the study of geography. Professor Nunn said he brought 25 years of geography experience in the Pacific Islands to Queensland when he began working for the University of the Sunshine Coast four years ago. "I'm interested in how ancient stories have practical influence for the future," he said. "Many Pacific Island communities are reluctant to adapt to climate change because they don't have an understanding or respect for science. "One of the ways to encourage them to adapt is to talk about their history, which may have involved moving from one place to another, sometimes when land was washed away. "Most communities like nothing better than to share their old stories, and I can use this history to make climate change relevant, balance the narrative and explain where I am coming from." Professor Nunn speaks fluent Fijian, is involved in six research projects on the Pacific Islands, and every year takes 10 undergraduate students on a research trip to remote parts of the region. "Very little research cannot be filed under the banner of geography," he said.Since moving to Australia, Professor Nunn has become interested in Indigenous cultural stories. He is co-author of the Australian Geographer's frequently viewed article Aboriginal Memories of Inundation of the Australian Coast dating from more than 7000 Years Ago.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Keith Elliott Allison

A useful life Keith Elliott Allison was a mining engineer by profession but has for decades been a volunteer, helping the Noosa Coast Guard, working as a Justice of the Peace and assisting local school children improve their school work and overcome family problems. He spoke to Noosa Today during National Volunteer Week. What is your organisation? I volunteer with SCILS (Sunshine Coast Individualised Learning and Support) program. I work with the Salvation Army and the Queensland Education Department to help students who are having problems with their lessons and to become better people. What do you like most about your business? Helping high school students to have a happy and fruitful life.

(Two volumes) What do you do to relax? I'm an amateur radio operator, reading non-fiction and I have a large capacity for curiosity, and I play Brass Band music. What music/movie/TV show have you been listening to/watching lately? I listen to ABC classical music and ABC Radio National. The latest film I say was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. What is your greatest fear? Not living long enough to do all I would like to do. What is your greatest regret? Losing our elder son when he was 34-years-old What is your next challenge? To keep on living a useful life.

What was your first job? I was an underground coal miner.

What is your favourite dish at the moment? Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding

What is your most treasured possession? My father-in-law was a ship's captain. My wife gave me a sailing ship in a bottle that was a replica of his ship. And a miner's lamp.

What do you like most about living in Noosa? It still has a village atmosphere and a happy feeling in a mad world

What's your favourite book? Lost Horizon by James Hilton. 1933 and the Oxford shorter English Dictionary

What is the most important thing in your life? My wife of 65 years and son with two lovely granddaughters

POWERHOUSE OF FASHION a great chance for local businesses to collaborate and deliver an event unlike any seen in the shire before. "There will be great music, food supplied by businesses in the Pavilion, a shopping experience on the night thanks to the retailers within the Pavilion, as well as what is sure to be an amazing show from an impressive group of women," she said. "This is a chance to support local parents who are striving to grow their business as well as be a part of the community." As Noosa Junction's most stylish addition, the Pavilion was the perfect location to host the fabulous fashion event. "The Pavilion was conceived as a sophisticated and chic destination for locals, biased to women, that could showcase in retail the considerable local talents and expertise of Noosa people, who create different, individual, differentiated, unique product, much as did Hastings St some 25 years ago," Ms Sherriff said. All funds raised on the night will go directly to the running costs of the Powerhouse, which Ms Sherriff tries to keep affordable for parents who are doing all they can to get back into the workforce. Tickets are available now from $59 per person and can be purchased by searching Fashion in the Piazza at www.eventbrite. com.au. â—?

Rehearsals are underway for what will be Noosa's most fabulous fashion event. Already, more than 20 actors, volunteers and organisers have gathered at Noosa Leisure Centre to start rehearsing for The Powerhouse Fashion Show, Fashion in the Piazza. The annual event started two years ago as a fundraiser for the unique co-working space where parents can work in style with their little ones cared for in a crèche right next door. The space, and the fashion show, has since boomed with more and more community members supporting this innovative idea to get parents back into the workforce. Powerhouse founder Aimee Sherriff said the Fashion Show had grown from a smallscale fundraiser in 2016 to what is expected to be the fashion event of the year in 2018. "We've really taken this to the next level," she said. "This year, we have handed creative control over to a fabulous, vivacious group of local Italian women who will showcase their culture through a unique stage show. "Following the show, local designer Cinzia Calarco's latest collection will hit the runway giving guests an exclusive look at her designs." The event will be held on Saturday 26 May at the new Pavilion development in Noosa Junction. Ms Sherriff said it was

LAST CHANCE FOR A VILLAGE SQUARE

As a long-term Sunshine Coast architect, urban designer and Noosa resident I was involved with the initial Wallace Park plan, Noosa Junction plan, Hastings Street refurbishment committee, Viridian Peppers Village master plan, and the original Noosaville foreshore plan. The latter was successfully carried out after extensive and successful community consultation orchestrated by the then mayor Noel Playford. It is important for the community to contribute ideas. In reference to the Noosa Fair / bowls club site and the commercial realities of the major stakeholders (including the council) are concerned, the community is, of course, a prominent stakeholder as well. Commercial realities and cultural relevance must work ‘hand in hand’. The rejected Coles proposal lacked potential community placemaking. As with any urban design ideas there are always possibilities, synergies opportunities and conflicts. This is the last opportunity to create a Noosa Village Square.

I attach a very preliminary ideas plan which explores and includes: • A large Village Square. Cities and towns throughout Australia such as Ipswich are prioritising the development of such urban open spaces within their Central Business Districts. • The Square would form part of a north/south pedestrian cycle link from the Noosa Junction High Street through Arcadia Walk to Pinaroo Park which, besides its excellence is relatively isolated. • The Square, to become a peoples’ place, and for various community groups and celebrations. • The proposed Pinaroo Way in the rejected application wastes valuable land and should not ‘dump’ full traffic flow into Lanyana Way as this would compromise a pedestrian friendly shared zone linking Arcadia Walk with a possible Village Square, Pinaroo Park and commercial facilities. It would also create vehicular congestion and ‘rat running’. • The existing successful Arcadia Walk piazza will be ruined by enlargement of the existing small ‘one way’ lane into a busy two-way vehicular road. There are further opportunities for: • Provision of college student or satellite university space. • Recycling the old Bowls Club has potential for night entertainment facilities sadly lacking in the area and a ‘state of the art’ gymnasium. • The bowling greens could contain a ‘state of the art’ well-being, sports health and medical centre, with the architecture being a focal point and ‘affordable’ housing to be developed and administered under a suitable model. Our newly elected state member Sandy Bolton is championing ‘affordable housing’ and I believe the State Government is developing new models to replace old ones such as NRAS.

Thursday, 24 May, 2018

The property owners facing the Noosa Cooroy Rd should be allowed to develop residential above their retail. The idea of shop-houses will further add to the mixed-use diversity of Noosa Junction. • The visual exposure to Noosa Fair developed along two axes instead of one. The semi-enclosed Noosa Fair court could be developed as a subtropical indoor / outdoor food court as a destination linking with the Village Square and gateway to Coles and other shops. • Generous shade structures and shade trees need to be a priority for the ‘at grade’ car-parking. The above are only ideas, but provide some possible options for a genuine, active mixed-use community ‘campus’ with synergies all round, that could be incorporated alongside any development yield proposal. It would provide a real town focal point for Noosa Heads. John Mainwaring, LFAIA Noosa

KEEP IT IN YOUR BACKYARD

I think the most important fact about this abattoir proposal is that Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast Council have absolutely nothing to benefit from it. Even though Sandy Bolton has publicly declared that there would never be an abattoir within Noosa Council, it seems that the same council, through the NBRF, is pushing hard for that abattoir to be re-opened outside of their own council in Eumundi. Keep in mind that this new proposal, is a much bigger scale project that the previous one, with four and eventually probably up to eight times the amount of slaughtering within such a small precinct. But what’s in it for the Eumundi community? Nothing, absolutely nothing! Except for the odd local getting a job, the rest of the town will have to cope with six to eight times the amount of smell, noise, and pollution ending up in our Maroochydore catchment

river, but we will never even get to taste this ‘local product' as it is to be exported to the rich Chinese market. Hopefully the Sunshine Coast Council will oppose this proposal for the sake of the Eumundi community. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale

FEAST HITS THE BOTTLE

The Noosa Food and Wine Festival has grown to be a destination of choice for gastronomic and viticultural adventurers from Queensland and beyond. We had the pleasure of entertaining our interstate guests at The Beach House with Peter Kuruvita and Matt Wilkinson. A fantastic evening. However good it was, I would be reluctant to attend again. Most people who enjoyed the bars afterwards were jovial, but alarmingly there were a number of people who were so intoxicated they became lewd, aggressive and the angst amongst these people was palpable. Our wives had lewd, guttersnipe remarks directed towards them several times. We were challenged to step outside by some gentlemen who had minutes before accosted other people for no apparent reason. We saw other men spoiling for fights with anyone who so much looked at them sideways. The alarming aspect of this was that these men we witnessed from different groups were aged from 45 onwards. Men who surely had wives and children of their own. Men who should know better than to get so intoxicated and to then make such threats against innocent people or to make vile and horrid comments towards women they do not know. I have never before felt so uncomfortable with people in my own age group and also as disgusted. The security was sorely lacking at the bars afterwards and this will become a big issue unless the venues are policed better during the festival, where they can send home the small minority of idiots who dare cause trouble for those out to celebrate a great festival. YOUNG STARS AT CHORALE Five of Queensland's rising young opera stars will be soloists with Noosa Chorale this Saturday when the choir presents an afternoon of baroque music at the J. The singers, Annika Hinrichs (soprano), Cassandra Wright (soprano), Melissa Gregory (mezzo soprano), Ronan King-Rose (tenor) and Henry Pinder (bass) are graduates of the Conservatorium of Music and have had leading roles in operas as varied as Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro and Hansel and Gretel. "We have been encouraging and fostering the careers of singers like these young people for more than 20 years now and some of them have gone on to have fabulous international careers," Chorale president Gai Ramsay said. "On Saturday we are featuring them in two baroque pieces, Handel's Dixit Dominus, and Bach's Magnificat and I'm especially excited about them singing with us and the Noosa Sinfonia Orchestra. "Soprano Annika Hinrichs is only 23 and she has been a professional since she was 17. She has had principal roles in several operas and is a frequent soloist

Annika Hinrichs with the Queensland Choir, the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra." Concertedly Baroque. The J Theatre, Noosa Junction. Saturday, May 26, 2pm. Tickets $35. Student concession $25. â—?

DRIVER AWARENESS LESSONS FOR FREE BY HOLLIE HARRIS "RYDA" Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program is focused on our year 11 students in regional schools. This program is delivered to the students is completely free. The students attend a 1 day out of school program consisting of 6 Sessions, Speed and Stopping, Hazards and Distractions, The" I " In Drive, Road Choices, Crash Investigators, and Genevieve Story .On the day the students are divided into 5 group to make sure that they are able to interact with the presenter. RYDA focuses on cognition development, building and increasing social competency and resilience and motivating low risk behavior. Facilitators work with students to develop and practice personalised strategies and life skills which will help them respond positively to challenges on the road, both as drivers and highly influential passengers. RYDA is an essential road safety platform for young drivers and their passengers - it doesn't come from driving lessons, books or the school classroom. However, RYDA does support school curricula, giving teachers an important toolbox of additional resources and allowing them to harness the motivation and competencies taken from the RYDA day to enhance their classroom

RYDA programs; helping saves young lives on our roads. curriculum based lessons. This program is not about teaching students to drive but plays a very important role in helping to make them aware of their responsibilities when they go out onto the road as a driver. Overall the trip to the "RYDA" facility was educational, and had a astounding effect on all students that attended. And will hopefully have influence on the students enough to ensure that they never have this happen to them or they are not the cause of an accident in the future. Some 750 year 11 students have attended RYDA this year with no out of pocket cost to parents, students or schools. ROGUE TOAD WITH OZ TWIST The Rogue Toad is a hilarious tale of love and mateship on the Noosa River. A play loosely based on the characters of Wind in the Willows but with a very Australian twist is to be performed onboard the Noosa Ferry in May as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival. There are over 1.4 billion Cane Toads in Australia but the Noosa River is the only place with The Rogue Toad, a jovial little guy with a passionate view of the current political climate. Toad likes to help out, protect our shores, party hard and skip showers. His mate Rat needs his help and he is all too willing to oblige. With our loveable characters on a mission to get Mole and Badger back to their homelands this play is a riotous look at Australian culture through the eyes of our anthropomorphic friends. The rhyming Goanna weaves indigenous history, along with facts about the local fauna, into this humorous tale. There's a family of Blue Tongues along for the ride, so you can imagine the fun to be had. The play was written by local drama teacher, actress and award winning director Tania Nash. As an actress Tania has performances in many local productions including Minefields and Miniskirts, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Fall and Rise of Mr Scrooge, five pantomimes and several One Act Plays for Noosa Arts Theatre and Coolum Theatre Players . Tania has also directed for Noosa Arts Theatre, winning the Audience Choice and

Best Director Award at Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival for Dotty's Inheritance and Best Director for Dead Loss at Noosa One Act Play. Tania is joined by local coast actors, Ali Lombole, Glen Miller, Veronica Inchauspe and Neil Nash. The Rogue Toad is light hearted and loads of fun and all set on the Noosa River. The play takes place on the Noosa Ferry and includes a couple of glasses of either wine, beer, sparkling or OJ and the cost is only $30 11am. 26 and 27 May at Noosa Marina, 2 Parkyn Parade, Tewantin. Pre purchase tickets only http:// anywhere.is/listings/theroguetoad/. For further Information call Tania on 0414761772 ●

MURRAY’S HEARTBEAT Byron Bay singer-songwriter and one of Australia's most loved musicians, Pete Murray has today announced a stunning remix of his song Heartbeats, by ARIAawarding winning Peter Mayes and you can catch him at The V Room, Villa Noosa next month! Pete has also dropped a video for the remix, a short film seeking to inspire audiences to cherish the love they share with others while they still can. To celebrate, Pete has also announced a 3 piece acoustic tour that will cross the country playing intimate club shows, supported nationally by exciting newcomer, Matthew Armitage. This remix of Heartbeats is subtle, and truly showcases Pete's diversity as an noosatoday.com.au

artist. Peter Mayes has expertly crafted understated percussion that percolates underneath Pete's vocal, and propels the track from heartfelt ballad into edgy new territory for Pete Murray. Fans are sure to love this rework of Heartbeats just as much as the original. "I'm excited to try and do things a little differently these days," Pete says, "this Heartbeats remix from Peter Mayes is a fun new thing for me and I'm stoked with how it came out." The video for the Heartbeats accurately reflects the song's lyrical theme through an honest and affecting lens. Directed by Corey Donaldson (Alex L'Estrange, Swilo, Sundown Jury), the clip is propelled by a narrative that highlights the thrill of young

love, and the devastation that can ensue. Filmed in Pete's hometown of Byron Bay, the opening sequence of the headland is a recurring setting that powerfully and poignantly closes this stunningly evocative short film. It is moving, and beautiful, just as the song is. 2017 was a massive year for Pete, with his ARIA award-nominated album Camacho debuting at number 3 on the ARIA charts, and a packed-out 33 date album tour across Australia. With over one million album sales to his name, the quiet achiever of Australian music is committed to constantly growing as an artist and offering fans new and exciting material with each release. Pumped to hit the road and play acoustic

versions of his popular songs for fans across Australia, Pete enthuses, "I love acoustic tours as it's always great to strip songs back to their bare bones and do cool versions of them. This tour is going to be a lot of fun and will also be a three piece tour, something I have never done before in Australia" Heartbeats (Peter Mayes remix) is set for release on March 21. The album Camacho is available now. This is an 18+ event and tickets are available at www.villanoosa.com.au. It's only $50 and is on Thursday 05 July (opening 7:00 PM) at Villa Noosa. â—?

It's stand-up comedy, but not as we know it, in Noosa this weekend (May 26-27). Comedy Lounge for the Anywhere Theatre Festival brings a top line up of local and touring comedians to the most homely venue possible. If you're new to the delights of the Anywhere Theatre Festival, the clue is in the name; it's performance anywhere but in a theatre. In this case it's 'Mel's Place', a leafy home on the shores of Lake Weyba that will become Comedy Central this weekend, along with street food and a cash bar. Anna Brennan is well known locally for her regular comedy nights in Eumundi and was runner-up in this year's RAW comedy competition in Brisbane. She'll be joined by some seriously funny stand-ups, Christopher Martin, Claudia Bergs, David Woodhead, Sarah Kate Young, and Carolyn Mandersloot with Sam Bowden as MC. Sam recently supported the likes of Danny Bhoy and Brian Posehn and has been telling everyone ever since. Carolyn, another RAW Comedy finalist, doubles as a palliative care nurse from Gympie, and manages to find humour in just about anything ... yes, including the end of life. The Anywhere Theatre Festival started in Brisbane seven years ago and has more recently made its mark on the Sunshine Coast, supporting artists to perform and entertain new audiences in the unlikeliest of venues.

Anna Brennan. One of the stars of this weekend’s Comedy Lounge.

This weekend's Comedy Lounge organiser, Robyn Hewitt, says it's like a popup bar; "For just $20 you get to see some genuinely talented and funny acts, in the unexpected intimacy of a home." There's still time to book a ticket on line for performances this Saturday (May 26th) at 6.30pm, and on Sunday (May 27th) at either 2pm or 6.30pm. The Italian gelato machine is one of the biggest in the country and is set to pop out the finest, handcrafted gelato; the waffle machine is specially imported from the UK and rotates 360 degrees to create the crispiest waffles; with key ingredients locally-sourced and handcrafted onsite. To meet dietary requirements, there are lactose free, gluten free and veganfriendly options with a focus on plant-based stabilisers and low GI sugar with the gelato, sorbets, waffles and brownies made from scratch using locally-sourced ingredients such as Maleny Milk, Padre Coffee and Cooloola Berries. With a dedicated kids menu starting from $4; a breakfast menu including yoghurt pops with berries and granola; Waffle pops with a choice of Nutella, bananas, yoghurt and berries; or bacon and cheese waffle pops; these is sure to be something for everyone. Happy Pops is the brainchild of Augusta Puttkammer who holds a diploma in Culinary Arts; Cordon Bleus and Commercial Cookery; and has worked

across the globe as a Pastry Chef. For Augusta, Happy Pops is the realisation of a childhood dream. "From a very young age I dreamed of providing desserts as a 'happy experience' for everyone," she said. "I want every customer to feel like a little kid and to have that sense of sweetness and awe. "While it has been really hard work to bring this dream to reality, I want to hug my five-year old self and say 'go girl - you did it!'" Augusta said it was all about creating an experience that you wouldn't find anywhere else. "We are committed to providing 'happiness on a stick' with a special emphasis on premium handcrafted and natural ingredients and the freedom to create your own taste adventure!" You have endless choices of Yogurt Pops, Premium Pops, Naked Pops, Milkshake Smiley Faces and Chocolate Paw Pops which can be fully dipped, half dipped or drizzled with White, Dark or Milk Chocolate; Salted Caramel Sauce; Nutella; or Real Canadian Maple Syrup; and sprinkled with up to three ingredients including: Rose petals; Mini mallows; Freeze dried blueberries or raspberries; Banana chips; Coconut flakes; Pistachio; Macadamia nuts; Cranberry & apple granola; 100s & 1000s; Almonds; Hazelnuts; Salted caramel waffle crunch; or Brownie crunch. FRENCH FARE AT ITS BEST! BY HOLLIE HARRIS Trio's restaurant has been established in Noosa for over twenty years and is still as popular as it was since first opening. Now situated in the South Pacific Resort for the last two years, it has the added versatility of two private function rooms, beautiful tropical surrounds and an inviting open fireplace which adds a welcoming warmth and ambience to the colder months. Trio's is now featuring a new winter menu, boasting some new 'french' influences that will not disappoint. Dinner specials are still available throughout the winter season, with the added bonus of B.Y.O. with no corkage fee. Here is a sneak peek of a few new menu temptations, for 'starters' an indulgence for the seafood lover, try the southern black mussel's in a creamy curry with onions and shallots or how about some pan-seared Scallops on crispy sweet potato, pickled ginger and shallots with wasabi lime dressing or for something completely different the green peppercorn duck rillettes with toasted sourdough. For 'mains', we suggest some mouthwatering choices, like a slow braised lamb shank in red wine tomato garlic and fresh herbs with root vegetables and garlic mash or how about a Blue Gum smoked pork cutlet with braised red cabbage, grilled pear, green beans, creamy mash potato with dijon mustard jus and for another 'french'

Trios in the South Pacific Resort Noosaville is the perfect place for warm fireside dining this Winter. touch the hard to resist chicken 'coq au vin', mushroom red wine bacon sauce with a creamy mash and broccolini. To finish, why not try some hard to resist desserts, perhaps a serving of baked Bailey's fig cheese cake with vanilla bean ice cream or the coconut lime panacotta, with caramelised pineapple.

The ever popular Wednesday and Thursday specials, two courses for $39 including a glass of wine are still available. Don't forget to book your end of year party and Xmas gatherings soon for date availability. You can contact Trio's directly on 5473 1333 or email triosatsouthpacific@ mail.com. â—?

SPORT TODAY

GAIN OUTWEIGHS PAIN BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa pharmacist Chloe Kay described her first ultraman event at Noosa as "the best three days of (her) life" despite being in "a world of pain" at the end of it. Of the 48 competitors in the event Chloe was one of 15 women, the most women in any ultraman event across the world. Chloe said the camaraderie between the athletes, the pride in finishing each day and the support from locals along the race made it a standout event. "The support was phenomenal," she said. Among her support team was Alison Hamblyn whose daughter MJ paddled alongside Chloe during her 10km swim. A member of the Noosa Tri club Chloe

said she had been looking for another challenge when she decided to tackle the ultraman. While working full time her training regime began about six months ago with 4.30am starts, swimming or running about two hours mornings and evenings and rides of five to six hours on Sundays. Having never run more than a marathon Chloe found the 84km run on Monday the most taxing event and was "really struggling at about 60km", but rallied at the 70km point with the end in sight. This year the Noosa Ultraman was won by New Zealander Carl Reid with the first woman over the line, Kirsty Sheehan. The event tests athletes who over three days compete in a 10km ocean swim, 421km

bike ride and 84.3km run. Event coordinator Dayle Jordan said there were no official records able to be noted for the swim after an outgoing tide moved one of the marker buoys. Last year the event was won by Sunshine Coast's Richard Thompson when he broke the world record. Race director Tony Horton said the race, now in its fourth year in Noosa, attracted athletes across the globe who sought to explore extreme physical and mental abilities. The Ultraman event, which originated in Hawaii 35 years ago, focuses on the principles of Hawaiian culture - aloha (love), ohana (family) and kokua (help) and retains them. ●

NOOSA TIGERS

TOUGH AND GUTSY GAMES BY JULIAN PITTS

Noosa Tiger Girls It all started well for the Noosa Tiger girls after the U15 girls had a tough and very gutsy 15 point win in slippery heavy conditions against Kawana to remain equal top on the ladder. Maggie Harmer was again a standout for the tigers whilst co-captain Emma Benjamin (three goals) Charlotte Sipp and Summer Ryan were all very influential in the win but from there it all went downhill as the U17s were comprehensively thumped by Kawana to the tune of 83 points. It was just one of those nights. india Maddin continued her great form whilst Ruby Sanderson and Kalinda Calgari were also among the best in our first defeat of the season. On Sunday our top of the ladder and previously undefeated Noosa pink were badly beaten by a pretty well organised Maroochydore. Jemima Ward, Poppy Tindal and Piper Wood the best on a dirty day for the tiger girls which ended with the young Noosa white team getting blown away by Glasshouse/Notth shore. Sienna Gramitakis and Charlie Brown were great for the white girls whilst Stella Suddemore also shone on a tough weekend for the girls who are hoping to bounce back big time next week. Go tigers. ●

The Roccocos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have smashed what seemed to be a pretty depleted Yeronga by over 20 goals in a glorious afternoon at Weyba Rd last Saturday. The win consolidates the Noosa teams ladder leading position where they share top position with Sunshine Coast rivals Maroochydore. Whilst the South Brisbane outfit started the game with a fair bit of pressure and work rate, from quarter time onwards it was just all the Tigers. Football manager Mitch Woods was the outstanding player on the ground collecting 31 touches in an almost flawless skilful display. Woods repelled many of Yeronga's attacking moves with skill and precision and even chimed in with 3 majors to make his afternoon memorable. Gun recruit Tyler Stack just ran the legs off two or three opponents as the skilful midfielder helped himself to 31 touches in a terrific display of footy. Powerhouse on-baller Tom Templeton again showcased his class bagging a lazy five goals from the centre whilst big Jake Stewart continues to impress at centre half forward and with cameos in the ruck. Skipper Aaron Laskey was amongst the best players again as usual with another superb display picking up 29 disposals for the match. All in all it was a complete Tiger domination with a pretty tricky meeting against Caloundra

UPCOMING PRESIDENTS LUNCHEON

UPCOMING EVENTS Noosa Tigers win over Yeronga. at Caloundra this Saturday. The Panthers sit 3rd in the Hart Sport Division 1 ladder and with ex Noosa player Steve Moody at the helm; the boys know they will come out firing. Making the game even more special is that both teams play for the Wayne 'Dozer' Dover Memorial shield. Wayne (of course) having been a senior premiership player at Noosa before coaching Caloundra post playing days. A great bloke who certainly left a positive mark on both clubs. Best of luck to all our tiger junior teams playing this weekend and see you all down at Caloundra on Saturday. ●

AROUND THE GROUNDS

DRAGONS BREATHING FIRE U8s Match report by Will Vine The Eumundi Dragons U8's were up against the well-drilled Grammar team held at the Beautiful grounds at Matthew Flinders school. It was a great display from Grammar in the first half who were able to put a number of tries on the board against us. The second half we all held our heads high and worked together allowing Max Johnson to score 2 tries out wide to lift our spirits. Our forwards Josh Vine, Oakey Dean and Jasper Bianchi then stepped up a level and held the strong forward pack of Grammer back to allow our backs, who consisted of Max Johnson, Ted Wiles, Jet Davis, Tristan Adams, Zimmi Desbiens, to run with the ball, look for support and enjoy playing rugby. Our Player of the game this week went to Ted Wiles for his energetic field presence and confidence to take on one of the biggest boys in Grammar's team and still get back up and keep on playing. I would just like to thank the parents, team managers jersey washers who all support the team every week by making it to training and game day. It is a pleasure watching your

kids develop into fine Rugby players. Rugby Under 9's by Jim Yaxley The Eumundi Dragons- Maleny Bushrangers game on 19 May saw the Dragons expressing their tactics on the field to an awesome effect. The game was dominated by some excellent tackling using techniques that had been focused on in training over the previous weeks by our coaches. Our new player Eli Brumley showed his awesome potential both with highest number of tackles for any player and using his speed in moving the ball up the field. Patrick O'Grady has blossomed as player transforming from an awesome tackler into a vigorous forward scoring his first try of the season and who could not stop smiling the entire day. Jet Herbert once again showed his amazing speed and agility in scoring most of the try's for the Dragons with an exceptional try by Tom Wiles. All the Eumundi Dragons played their positions well and when in the Melee displayed good to team effort the game.

U8s man of the match Ted Wiles. Through our coaches the players have really come together as a team being there to support their mates in moving the ball forwards through the lines. Well done Dragons ●

Back on home turf, and the day started with a bit of fun with both our U7 Black and U7 Gold playing together! All kids on field did a wonderful job and worked well with their teams. A great way for both teams to get to know each other and have a nice friendly match! Well done U7's! What an exciting game this weekend for the Under 8 Gold team against the Pacific Mantarays! The Noosa boys put in a thousand percent effort to secure a 4-1 victory. Ryan C once again showed his amazing goalie skills, and then scored two goals for our team in the second half. Congratulations to Kyro for his sharp shot into goals early in the match, to Phoenix for scoring his first goal of the season (it should have counted!) and to man of the match Xavier for phenomenal play. Keep up the amazing effort, team! U10 Black had a great match against Currimundi Morays. It was a fight until the end with Currimundi scoring the winning goal right before time finishing off with a close score 7-6 The defenders worked hard all game to

TOUGH LOSS TO NOOSA BY DOUG MCCONNELL In the mid-peninsula's croquet Shield competition Noosa played host to Coolum under ideal playing conditions. It proved to be a tough morning for the home side. By morning tea Noosa had lost 3 of the 8 singles matches to the visitors. However, after the break Noosa rallied and took both doubles to draw at 5 matches each. The fall back count of hoops scored then came into play and Coolum came out on top having run 60 hoops to Noosa's 57. For the first time in this reporter's competitive sports playing and reporting life, he was in credulous as several of the Coolum players requested that they not be named in reporting the match. Surprised, the Noosa team captain acquiesced, so in the individual scores that follow, the visitors

Thursday, 24 May, 2018

will only be referred to by their team places. This does not set a precedent, and is only used here this once because the Noosa captain's word needed be respected. As is my wont Noosa scores are shown first. In the singles matches Ed Boyd lost to C1 (4:5); Susan Powley also lost to C2 (3:5). In the reverse singles Ed fell again to C2 (2:7) while Susan defeated C1 (7:3). In the 3-4 singles Joan Cordell went down to C3 (6:7) while Cher Boyd held on to win over C4 (7:6). Fully recharged after morning tea, in the doubles Susan and Sheila Moncrieff won over C! and C2 (8:7) while Cher partnered with Mike Studley to defeat C7 and C8 (9:8). Noosa conceded a total of 14 free turns to Coolum demonstrating that the handicapping system is working. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

SO LONG, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH

Legends at Noosa - 1998.

Bit teary.

Buff and Bill lead the paddle out - 1999.

It's a bit like packing up the last dusty file box, bolting the door on the old corner shop and turning the sign around so it reads: "Closed for business." Or putting a bullet in the heads of the last starving beasts and walking off the farm. I watched my Dad close the shop doors with tears in his eyes all those years ago, and I've done the same a couple of times in my long career of taking on market forces alone and without a safety net. But few chapters in life have ended so emotionally as the one our family closed this week, when we walked away from the Noosa Festival of Surfing after 21 years. The festival took shape over rowdy "beerstorming" meetings around the courtyard table at the Noosaville townhouse we had bought off the plan, and where we live again now. Fortunately our neighbours to either side had not moved in yet, and did not have to suffer the rich and vibrant language used to paint a picture of this project about which we were so passionate - me, my partner at Noosa Blue Publishing John Brasen, house painter Johnny Lee, who had created a pro longboard event with international potential, and all my opinionated bloody family. Our daughter Sam had already finished school and joined the family business as

heritage. Johnny Lee knew a bloke who knew a bloke who provided the packaging for Breaka Flavoured Milk, and through him we got a corporate sponsor on board for enough dough to fly Hawaiian champ Rusty Keaulana and Sixties big wave legend Greg Noll in. I used the old mates' act to get Mark Warren and Tommy Carroll to town, and suddenly we had lustre to the cluster. And, most importantly, we had started to spread the tentacles of the festival beyond the small world of longboarding, and into a broader appreciation of the culture of surfing. Breaka loved us. For '99 they pointed the money gun in our general direction and kept firing as we invented new stuff they had to own. The first (and highly unofficial) world championships of tandem surfing got off to a sticky start when we realized late on festival eve that a twelve-foot tandem board may not fit into the luggage hold of the bus we had hired to pick up the internationals from Brisbane Airport. JB and I had to scale a fence in Rene Street in the pouring rain and sit in the mud beside a bus with a tape measure, trying to remember the basics of trigonometry before sending out an emergency call for the biggest cage trailer ever built. That year we had the entire Keaulana

financial officer; Ellie had just started high school. They had plenty of opinions on how this should run, as the man-meeting ashtrays were pushed away and the pizzas unfolded. Soph, away at uni, offered her views by phone. It was a family business from the start, and that's the way it stayed (albeit in a healthier environment), right up to this week, when Sam and Ellie manned the phones and told our friends and supporters the sad news ahead of the official announcement. Of course, the departure of the management team that created, nurtured and grew the event to its current position as the world's biggest and happiest surf festival does not spell the end for it. However, our family is so personally invested in the years of hard work that went into it, and the sheer joy that came out of it, that for us it will never be the same.

A FEW MEMORIES. Apart from getting the best longboarders from around the world to attend, my vision for a "surf festival" included injecting a bit of theatre into proceedings, like France's Biarritz Surf Festival, which I'd been attending for a few years. Part of this was to celebrate the roots of all aspects of surfing, particularly its Hawaiian

clan here, and patriarch Buffalo, the kahuna of Makaha, was to perform our traditional Hawaiian ho'okupu opening ceremony. All the Hawaiians were happily installed at Jim Tatton's sensational new South Pacific Resort, from whence I had an early morning call on the day of the opening from Buff's minder, a leading Honolulu banker. "Uncle Buffalo doesn't feel right about doing this unless it's with a local Aboriginal elder," he said politely but firmly. Buff's sensibilities were spot on, but to our shame we didn't yet know about welcome to country, and we certainly didn't have a go-to Aboriginal elder. After several failed attempts, and with time winding down, I had an idea. I phoned Bill Wallace. "Billy, you're our surfing tribal elder in Noosa, and I need a favour." We got it right in years to come, and the Gabi Gabi now play an important part in the festival, but I'll never forget Buff, William Wallace the Elder, and big Greg Noll leading us down to the water with the koa bowl. The Breaka executive set up camp at Netanya that year, and not a wave was ridden at First Point. They didn't love us anymore, and as would happen often in the topsy-turvy years ahead, they took their money off the table. ●

OUR TEAM STRIKES MORE SUCCESS BY RON LANE At the recent Australian Open Karate Championships held in Brisbane our local Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Academy once again achieved outstanding results. With contestants coming from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, New Caledonia and Nepal as well as all parts of Australia the competition was of very high standard. This tournament was under the auspices of the KFA (Karate Federation of Australia) so to achieve success at this level is indeed prestigious. The team came home with a total of 17 medals, 4 gold 6 silver and 7 bronze, so Head Sensei Bryan Dukas Black Belt 6th Dan, had every reason to be happy. "Our all round results are something to be proud of," said Sensei Dukas "These results now have our club rated in the top three in Australia. However, the medals are good to win but the most pleasing aspect has been the complementary remarks regarding the sportsmanship, conduct and good manners displayed by our team members. With politeness and respect for others being a backbone of Shotokan Karate it shows that our students not only perform well on the mat, but also out on the streets away from the dojo they conduct themselves with dignity in their everyday life." Another highlight has been the selection of two junior members; Cailin Corbett aged 10 and Dannica Starkey 11 chosen to represent Australia in New Zealand at the Oceanic Championships later this year. Both will contest the Kata (detailed pattern of movements performed either solo or in pairs) and Kumite (Sparring). With

Cailin Corbett aged 10 and Dannica Starkey 11 young people being so successful it speaks volumes for the standard of teaching by the instructors and the future of the club. Further good news for the club is that a visitation by Sensei Mike Dukas 8 Dan of South Africa (father of Bryan) will occur in late August early September of this year. Apart from conducting a seminar, students

will sit for black belt gradings under his supervision. Such is his worldwide recognition as a sensei that prior to his arrival he will have conducted seminars in both Perth and New Zealand. There can be no doubt that as a result of a seminar conducted during his visit in November last year, his teaching has contributed greatly

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

to the continued high standard of training within this Shotokan Dojo. Away from the Gibson Rd. Dojo, classes are now being conducted at the Good Shepard Lutheran College and the Noosa State School where basic Karate and self-defense is now being taught. We wish everyone every success. â—?

COOLER WATER TEMPS BRING ON THE BIG SNAPPER! With the water starting to cool now is a great time to target those cold water species. In the Noosa River there are still plenty of quality bream being landed off the rocks at the river mouth, the sand bags at the dog beach and the deeper sections of Woods Bays. Most anglers using fresh strips of mullet, whole small herring, prawns and live bloodworms. Around the Frying Pan there have also been some great bream as well as some elbow slapper whiting! Great targets when using small surface lures and small soft plastic with grubs and minnows being very effective. This time of year you'll often find some good tailor around the frying pan, due to the large schools of bait in the river. Medium size poppers and walk the dog lures are a good option and provide plenty of entertainment as you see the fish crunch the lure. Woods Bay and the Noosa Sound has also been firing with mixed schools of trevally including golden, diamond, cale cale, tea leaf, big eye and giant trevally feeding hard early morning and late afternoon. Up on the Ski Run jewfish continue to be caught with fish up to 80cm taken on soft plastics and live baits. On the Offshore seen out of Noosa, plenty of snapper have been boated from North Reef. The low light periods with a high tide has been the key, another great way to improve you catch rate is making sure you are setting a burley trail, small noosatoday.com.au

cubes of pilchards tossed into the water at regular intervals will create a burly trail and help to bring the fish on the bite. Try fishing as light as possible with lightly weighted bait similar to the same size as the burly, this method has been getting some good results. Sunshine Reef has had good numbers of squire sweetlip and the odd trout, again fishing with burley has produced the best fish. Pearl perch have been in good numbers around Chardons Reef along with cobia and jewies. Larger boats that made the run out to the Barwon Banks were rewarded with amberjack, snapper, gold band snapper, pearl perch, cobia, venus tusk fish, hussar and Maori cod. On the beaches it is all about the jew, and it seems we are on the comeback trail when it comes to the amount and quality of jew available, good fish have been travelling up our coastline with big fish taken from Maroochy River Mouth all the way to Double Island. Fresh mullet has been the most popular bait and the most successful anglers are the one that are up early or fishing into the night, team this with an incoming tide and a decent gutter and you are most defiantly in with a chance. Big bream are also on the menu with some great fish up to 35cm coming from the gutters. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
