Blades of glory By Derek Schlennstedt The hills community has come together to fund a set of new prosthetic blades for Mountain District Christian School student, Emmanuel Megee. At two years old, Em's right foot was amputated due to congenital deformity and the following year his left foot was also amputated. Despite his disability Em has never let it stop him from playing sports and taking part in school athletics, even if that means using his regular prosthetics to take part. Though, with the help of his friends, the school community, and Wandin Rotary Club, Em has been given the opportunity to get new carbon fibre blades that would see him not only keep up with his friends on the playground but become a formidable force during school athletics. His mother, Cathie Megee was overwhelmed by the response from the community and said the new prosthetics would change his life. "What it will mean for him is the ability to keep up on the playground with his mates," Ms Megee said. "His previous ones were base level; he could walk around fine but in terms of running and jumping his progress had plateaued." "He's a really sporty kid so it will mean he can do all the activities his friends and peers are doing ... he did cricket in the summer season and did really well, but it's challenging for him to keep up, those activities will become so much easier." "It will just transform his life and what he is able to do, when you watch a little boy running around and struggling to keep up ... it's so very meaningful to us." The fundraiser was organised by the students at the school, who coordinated the colour run to be integrated into their annual cross country event. Seeing their fellow student struggling to take part in school athletics events they wanted to find a way to
make it easier for him to take part. Ed Eadon, the School Chaplain at Mountain District Christian School, said that the school raised $2100 from the event, and the remainder of the cost for the blades were made up by Wandin Rotary Club. "One of the kids in his class knew Em was wanting to get new blades and wanted to help support him in that ... from that grew the idea of the colour run, coinciding with the cross country run," Mr Eadon said. "Got great support from local community ... donations from Bendigo Community Bank and we got some sausages from Emerald Rainbow Meat's and Wandin Rotary funded the rest." "It was really a total community event." Described as always giving "120 percent" when undertaking any activity, his mother said his current prosthesis did hamper his ability to take part in athletics - something which will now be a problem of the past. The blades, which are attached to the back of a fibre glass boot, will allow Em to run faster, jump higher and for the first time give him the capacity to change direction with ease. "There aren't words ... it's extraordinary, we're just so thankful," said Ms Megee Em who was ecstatic to learn about the fundraiser, and his new boots (legs) thanked everyone for their contribution and said he will be hot on the heels of his friend at next year's cross country. "I just want to say thank you so much to everyone at school and Rotary for raising this money for me," Em said. "I really appreciate it and can't wait to get my new blades and this time next year I will be running down the track with my classmates ... thank you so much."

Rising like a phoenix By Derek Schlennstedt The 2018 Dandenong Ranges Open Studio's wrapped up on 10 May and it was Jessie Yvette Journoud-Ryan who took out the People's Choice award. Working with repurposed crockery, her art is described as celebrating nature and lavish tableware, and it was her intricate art piece "Phoenix (Self Portrait): I won't live a life on my knees", which won the award and had over 300 people flocking to her studio over the Open Studio weekend. The French-Australian artist's work reflects her personal narratives of migration, belonging and cultural heritage. A struggle with depression and anxiety is inherent in her work, and speaking to the Mail, MS Journoud-Ryan said that working with delicate repurposed crockery was cathartic and cleansing for the soul. Fables, birds, music and willow patterns all feature in her unique sculptures, though it was while on a trip to Paris to see her family that she found her inspiration for her award winning piece. "After enduring a debilitating fear of travelling over the last decade, I finally met the challenge ... returning to my family in France recently was well overdue" "At the Château de Nice, I came across a mosaic of a Phoenix and I reflected on my odyssey ... rising from the ashes is an apt description for what it feels like to occasionally win the mental health battle." In her artwork the use of the colour blue makes a strong presence and Jessie said it re-
flects what lies beneath for her- the daily struggle with depression and anxiety. The Phoenix not only course represents Ms Jourmoud-Ryan rising from the ashes of her mental health but also in her art where she creates beautiful artwork from that which has been broken. "I suppose in my art there's the underlying narrative of rebuilding something from what's broken and I think that reflection is of my own life too."Community Cultural Development Officer at Burrinja Toni Main said all the art works in this year's Open Studios were impressive and noted the proounfd impact that Ms Jourmoud-Ryan's art piece had on visitors. "It is fabulous to see Jessie winning the People's Choice Award for 2018 ... The Phoenix is a piece which shows her growth as an artist, and takes her work to a whole new level," Ms Main said. Tied second for the award were Gerard Russo for 'Extractor' & Ches Mills for her series "Littoral Reflections #1 to #4" To view the Phoenix or to find out more information about Ms Journoud-Ryan's work go to; http://www.jessiejournoudryan.com

Caring spreading the blanket of warmth to the needy By Derek Schlennstedt As winter's chill begins to bite, spare a thought for those who are doing it tough. Cold days and freezing nights make life difficult for those who can't afford to turn on their heaters - or who don't have a heater or as much as a roof over their heads. With vulnerable people in mind, Gavin Smith and the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank have teamed up to run a winter blanket appeal. Over the past three months, Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group Chairman, John Waters, said the bank - working in conjunction with organiser, Gavin Smith who runs Upwey Soupies - had collected over 1000 blankets. "Thanks to the generosity from the community and our customers, we have collected over 1000 coats, blankets, scarves and beanies, "Mr Waters said. "We would like to express our sincere thanks to Gavin Smith, who has taken all the donations and ensured that they were distributed to people in need.
"Gavin's car has been filled to the brim each week, so he has been kept very busy." That appeal has kept Gavin very busy. Each week, he collects the blankets from the bank and then disperses them throughout the Yarra Ranges and the city to those who are in dire need of some warmth. "You can only describe it as a deluge," Mr Smith said. "I go to the Salvation Army in The Basin, the hills Op Shop in Ferntree Gully. "There are a lot of homeless people in the hills and out in the Yarra valley, but it's fair to say some of them are very invisible; they sleep in cars, in the bush and on couches." "I like to think you can bring a small measure of comfort to people who don't have any real comfort in their life at all." Donations of new and gently used coats and blankets can be brought into the Community Bank branches in Upwey, Belgrave and Cockatoo until 31 May 2018.

Zac eyes the cure By Peter Douglas Edinburgh College student Zac Wall, from Lilydale, is intent on advocating for a cure for Type 1 diabetes. A diabetic himself, the 12-year-old student is hoping to represent the electorate of Casey in the upcoming Kids in the House program, during which he would visit Parliament House in August to debate the benefits of research into Type 1 diabetes. Only one child from each electorate is permitted to attend. The young student's mother, Jeanette, said her son has been passionate about furthering this cause from a young age. "Zac has been a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) advocate since he was 6 and has regularly been a voice for continued funding for research, and clinical research trials, for the cure of Type 1," she said. "Zac is 12 years old - a diabetic since he was 6 - and has a long-standing relationship with (Casey) MP Tony Smith, whom he has met numerous times. "He is a JDRF advocate and wants to help them find a cure for Type 1 diabetes." Previously, Zac participated in this program when he was just 7 years old, but wants to again take part. If successful in his ambition, Zac will head to Canberra and fulfil his aim of providing a voice for all diabetics who reside in the electorate of Casey.

Kids going hands-on to help environment Thousands of Victorian students at over 200 schools and youth organisations from Selby to Lilydale, will be getting 'hands on' with inventive projects that help to educate children about sustainability within their local environment. These grants are made possible through Junior Landcare and Momentum Energy's Powerful Youth Projects. Landcare Australia and Momentum launched the Powerful Youth Projects in 2017 to seek new ideas for how children can actively learn and develop skills for protecting local environments. Through this program, Victorian schools, childcare centres and youth groups can apply for grants of up to $1000. Following a successful first year, which saw more than 24,000 students engaging in over 200 projects, the Powerful Youth Projects program rolled out across the state again in 2018. To encourage the enthusiasm shown by so many schools, Momentum Energy generously increased their funding to ensure that 219
Junior Landcare is an awareness raising and funding program that encourages young people to play an active role in ensuring the safe future of their environment. schools across Victoria were awarded grants. Of those schools, Selby Primary school was included for their Selby sustainability garden project, and Ferny Creek for their Indigenous garden project. Upwey was also included for their Indigenous Garden and Bush Cubby project and Lilydale too with the Development of a Bush Foods Garden and Compost area
The variety of projects ranges from veggie or bush tucker gardens to composting or recycling projects, sensory gardens and other sustainable or environmental ideas. Other projects include those to learn about biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, including bee projects, frog bogs and native revegetation. Dr Shane Norris, Landcare Australian Acting CEO, said he was delighted to be able to support so many schools in Victoria. "Junior Landcare is all about encouraging young people to play an active role in ensuring the safe future of their environment. So it's fantastic to be working in partnership with Momentum Energy two years in a row supporting thousands of children to get 'hands on' with nature. Last year's projects produced exciting results and we can't wait to see this year's projects come to fruition." Police caution road users Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol were called out to two separate road incidents over the weekend and are reminding people to drive and ride safely. The first incident occurred on 26 May at 7.28am and involved an 18-year-old female from Mount Dandenong who was driving her father's Ford Ranger tray east along Parslows Rd, Yellingbo. The Yarra Ranges was covered in thick fog at the time and as she entered a tight right bend her vehicle left the road, impacted with the embankment and rolled onto the driver's side. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Acting sergeant, Graeme Rust said that excessive speed was likely the cause, especially for the conditions. "Not only had she passed a 60 km/h sign, but also 25km/h 'S' bend advisory signs'," Act Sgt Rust said. Ambulance Victoria conveyed her to Maroondah Hospital to treat her injuries. Act Sgt Rust said it was important for everyone to drive the conditions and slow down when vision is hampered by sunlight, fog or road. "We're getting into the foggy conditions now and the biggest thing is if you can't see where the road is going, you should be travelling at a slower speed at which you should be able to stop if necessary. "You can't continue at the speed limit if the fog is thick and expect to be able to react to something ahead of you if you can't see it." "You can apply it to most things, sunshine, fog or even rain, drive to the conditions so that you can allow enough time to react to avoid other vehicles or objects." The second incident Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol attended on Saturday 26 May involved a motor cyclist on the Warburton-Woods Point Road, Reefton aka 'The Reefton Spur' about 1pm. The 41-year-old male from Montrose failed to take a left bend, lost control and slammed into a jagged rock face on the other side of the road, injuring his right arm, leg and back. Ambulance Victoria attended the scene with three road crews and air support. The male was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries. Act Sgt Rust reiterated the that the 'Reefton Spur can be particularly tricky at this time of the year with the sun shining on the northern side of a bend and wet roads on the southern side of the bend ... not to mention all of the tree litter and stones that can be found on the road'. Whilst on the way to the collision, the marked highway patrol car had to brake to avoid two irresponsible riders who were overtaking a car on the solid white line and obviously in excess of the speed limit. Then as police were leaving the scene, a rider almost collided with the High Patrol Car when the rider took a right bend with his head almost a metre over the centre white line. "He was riding so fast, he couldn't change his line and was just so lucky he didn't become another statistic on our roads," Act Sgt Rust said. Police are appealing for motorists to travel within the speed limits, to the conditions and to have the common-sense to realise that there are others on our roads and most of all drive within their capabilities. So far this year 87 lives have been lost on Victorian road and reducing road trauma is a shared responsibility for all who use the roads.

Tahj takes it to England
Monbulk Market Day
By Derek Schlennstedt Sassafras 16-year-old Tahj Kensely, is on his way to the UK to play Cricket, but the total cost to fund this experience of a life time is a bit over budget for the youngster. To help his family make up the cost Tahj has taken to digital technology and created a GoFundMe in the hopes of raising the rest of the money so he can further his career aspirations. Chosen as one of 12 around Victoria, to take part in the Steve Chapman UK Cricket trip, the tour sees the Australian cricketers play 11 games against county cricket teams and private schools, as well as providing an insight into what is need to be a professional athlete. Tahj, who hopes to play for Australia one
day, said his father was going to sell the family car, which his father uses for work to make up the cost difference. Though, Tahj said he doesn't want his dad to make that sacrifice. "My dad has said he will sell his ute to try to pay for the trip but I don't want him to because he needs it for his small business." "This tour gives me an opportunity to make my cricket so much better and get a taste of what it is and what it takes to play as a pro." A passionate fast bowler known as 'Tangles' at Upwey and Mt Waverly Cricket clubs, Tahj usually trains five nights a week and plays two days a week during the cricket season. Ferny Creek pollution worry By Peter Douglas The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and Melbourne Water are teaming up to investigate a series of pollution events along Dandenong Creek, one of which includes at Ferny Creek on Tuesday 22 May. After an initial campaign for the EPA to become involved, the issue reached boiling point after extensive media coverage over an incident in Heathmont on Saturday 19 May, which showed images of foam spewing forth from the creek. A similar event has now occurred in Ferny Creek, in an area near the source of the muchloved creek. The creek begins in Olinda and flows up through Bayswater and Wantirna, before heading towards Ferntree Gully and the Knox region. First Friends of Dandenong Creek vicepresident, Anthony Bigelow, said the foam showed that various unknown chemicals were reacting together, which he said is indicative of a deeper problem. "The problem is not so much the foam, but it's that we don't know exactly what chemicals are in the creek," he said. "It has the potential to be a further-reaching problem, because you can see the foam is travelling. It's in neighbouring yards and in the trees. "It's vitally important the EPA works with the community and council to track down the source. The reality is that until we know what's in these chemicals, we won't know what this will mean for the fish and nearby wildlife." Mr Bigelow said this year, already, there had been seven pollution events along the creek, one of which has resulted in the mass deaths of a population of eels. He said this is significant because eels are traditionally a highly resilient, dynamic spe-

Mr Bigelow said much of the focus is on an industrial state in Bayswater North, although the pollution events had emerged at various locations along the creek. Meanwhile, the united effort from the EPA and Melbourne Water comes just weeks after former Yarra Ranges Shire councillor and Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region, Samantha Dann, called for action from the EPA. Ms Dunn had said the incidents were "increasing in frequency" and found it "in-

furiating that the citizens of Bayswater and surrounds are left to investigate the illegal dumping of chemicals". Now, the EPA has said they are committed to finding the source, or sources, of the chemicals. The EPA, on Wednesday 23 May, has said it is taking an "unusual step" of advertising for community help to solve the mystery behind the chemical dumps, in particular the widely publicised event on Saturday 19 May. EPA Executive Director Regional Services Directorate, Damian Wells, said the campaign will ask the local community if they have seen or sus-
pect businesses or individuals being involved. "The community, including workers in industrial precincts, are our best eyes and ears, and any new information could go a long way to finding the perpetrator," he said. "The number of businesses potentially involved in such an industrialised area (and) the fact that this appears to be a deliberate act and one conducted under cover of darkness, adds to the difficulty of getting a swift result." EPA is urging community members to report suspected pollution to the EPA on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842) or at www.epa.vic.gov.au.

Bank boost To help celebrate the Upwey Community Bank's 20th anniversary this October, each staff member has been asked to nominate a community group that could benefit from a $1000 grant. The first Staff Choice Grants recipient was the Olinda Ferny Creek Junior Football Club, which was the nominee of Upwey branch staff member, Lisa. "I nominated the club because they are long-time customers who encourage young boys and girls to play football," she said. Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Chairman, John Waters, said the one-off grants
will continue to be handed out in the coming months. "We hope that these $1000 grants are put to good us and that each community group gets a real surprise when they are notified," he said. "Our Upwey Community Bank Branch was the first urban bank branch to open in Australia in 198 and the second franchise company in the Bendigo Bank Community Bank model." The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group, with branches in Upwey, Belgrave and Cockatoo, has given $4.4 million to the Dandenong Ranges area.

Whatever you want to do in later life, start thinking about it now.
Where's the benefit?
Australians are living longer. And that means there’s a lot more life to enjoy. Whatever you’re looking forward to, whether it’s to keep working, change jobs, start a new business, or just keep healthy, active and connected – the government has programs to assist you. There are also 20,000 extra high level home care packages to help you stay at home and independent for longer.
Carl Stemp's letter 'Billy juggernaut tough to stop' ('Mail, 15 April) - which related to the proposed Puffing Billy Discovery Centre at Emerald Lake Park - summed up what many Emerald residents are saying: 'where is the benefit to Emerald from this proposal?' Trains will carry visitors beyond the town. Why has council not informed us that it is giving - yes, giving - our parkland to Puffing Billy, which has plenty of money and will clear more vegetation for parking. The consultation was not widely advertised. I wonder how much it will cost to have staff there? The park is too crowded on fine days now, with families who bring picnics. Why is another restaurant needed? If open at night, it will disturb the wildlife. Beryl Bartacek, Emerald
Drag race no laughing matter
There are lots of ways to live the life you want.
I would like to forward a response to some idiot in a white four-wheel-drive having a drag with another white four-wheel-drive up York Road, Mount Evelyn. I was leaving Mount Evelyn supermarket (IGA) when some clown lost control of his vehicle, due to speeding, and was heading straight towards me, as he turned into the parking lot. Fortunately for my two grandchildren I am raising, he corrected his spin-out in the wet conditions that prevailed on 20 May about 6pm and corrected his turn. He was 20m away from me as I was crossing the parking lot to my car. Then, of course, I was ridiculed in laughter for my shock response. Prue Nimmo, Mount Evelyn

Kids all starstruck
Victory visit
By Peter Douglas
Coaches from Melbourne Victory imparted their championship-winning knowledge and wisdom to the young soccer players at Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club. On Wednesday 16 April, the club hosted the Melbourne Victory coaches and - much to the excitement and elation of the young Under 9s team - the championship trophy was brought along. Ewa Wallis, Junior co-ordinator, spoke to the 'Mail' and said the juniors had been so excited to meet their heroes, but that it also benefited the parents who volunteer their time as coaches. "It's great to get all the kids together and of course they've been so excited and been waiting for this," she said. "It's not just about Melbourne Victory coming and seeing our juniors though, it's also about helping our coaches, a lot of them are parent volunteers, so helping them in their role to become more confident, too." Monbulk Ranges Soccer Club is one of 43 other clubs who are part of the Melbourne Victory's 'Club Victory' program, which supports grassroots football. Launched in 2010, Club Victory engages junior clubs throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria to provide new opportunities for young footballers to grow their love of the game. While running through a soccer skills drill with the juniors at Monbulk, Gulcan Koca, Club Victory Manager and W League player, said it was great to see so many kids at the club and commented on the new pitches. "We work with 43 clubs in victory and try to get out as many of them as possible and show our appreciation for them to be in the program," Ms Koca said. "It's all about just trying to get them to love the game."
Monbulk Girl Guides earned a little slice of history on the night of Wednesday 23 May. Many of the local guides participated in a world-record breaking occasion for the most people stargazing at the same time across multiple locations. As part of the ABC's broadcast of 'Stargazing Live' with Professor Brian Cox, the budding astronomers set their telescopes towards the night sky, along with an estimated 40,000 participants from around Australia. All those sets of eyes observed the moon through telescopes for about 10 minutes, which eclipsed the previous record, which the Australian National University set in 2015 with just 7960 people. Monbulk Girl Guides leader Felicity Hayes said it was a momentous occasion for the group. "This was an extremely exciting opportunity to be part of a record-breaking attempt," she said. "The girls have really embraced this opportunity. It's a great way to get them interested in astronomy and science." The event included participants from Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra in 14 universities, as well as over 100 schools and eight observatories. All registered participants will receive a certificate from Guinness World Records. Girl Guides Victoria said the event matched its objective of providing programs that encourage girls to get curious about the world and explore a variety of experiences and interests. Meanwhile, Professor Cox said the event was much more than just an attempt to break a record. "The real value is that many thousands of Australians have been introduced to the won-

Behind, from left, Charlie, Ella, Matilda and Sami. 181110 ders of the night sky, and many of those will be children," Professor Cox said. "They will develop a lifelong interest in astronomy and science, and the impact of that
will be felt for decades to come. "Perhaps the first Australian to walk on Mars will have been inspired by this spectacular night."

Dogs’ day out is a delight An estimated 300 pet-owners and their beloved pets turned out to the Wandin Park Equestrian Centre for the inaugural Adventure Dog - A Cross Country Challenge event on Sunday 27 May. Nicknamed 'rough mudder', the event encouraged participants to take on an extreme cross-country style event with their dogs. In addition, the event featured a kids' carnival, giant slide, jumping castles and plenty more for the family. Needless to say, all participants were 'barking mad' with excitement. 'Mail' photographer Greg Carrick was on-hand to capture all the action. *See full gallery at www. mailcommunity.com.au.

MODERN FARMHOUSE IN THE BUSH
THIS expansive property is for the horse owner, car and machinery owner, and/or family simply wanting a slice of the great Australian bush. Tucked away from the main drag, at the end of a country lane, between the Hills and the flatlands, sits this 15.5 acre oasis of equal parts comfortable family home, useable, practical land and shedding, and bush wilderness. Upon entering the front gate, you have two options: Park in the multiple car garage and enter via the stairs, or continue onto the
semi-circular driveway house to be welcomed by established cherry trees and delivered at the front door of this modern rendered brick home. As all good farmhouses should have, the entrance is a foyer, perfect for kicking off muddy boots and slipping into your favourite uggs. Walk through to the generous open living spaces and kitchen, with bedrooms at each end of the house. There are four bedrooms including a master with ensuite, built-in wardrobes, as well as a sizable study.
Living areas are large, including a dining and lounge and modern kitchen. Gas ducted heating, a wood heater and split-system air-conditioning keep the house cosy in winter and comfortable in summer. Adjacent to the dining area is a covered alfresco area looking out over a lush green landscaped garden and in-ground kidney pool, plucked out of a Bali holiday brochure. Out the back, there is all the space for the equine enthusiast. With five main paddocks, one pony paddock and a laneway, perfectly positioned hay shed, tack and feed room,
hitching rail and undercover float storage, you will be well equipped to keep your own horses or generate an income from agistment. And at the front, a huge garage, carports and two adjoined sheds with roller doors are perfect for those with machinery or cars. At least half of this block is bushland, accessible through the paddocks, for those keen to get right back to nature and wildlife.

‘Lark’ boost is going live Skylark Room promoter Ben Langdon has been announced as a successful applicant for Music Victoria's prestigious 2018 Music Works, Live Music Professionals program. The Upwey venue can look forward to a boost, as Ben was one of just 19 selected from all over the state to participate in this year's program, which aims to develop promoters, venue managers and band-bookers that are supported by the Victorian Government's Music Works initiative. Participants will be matched with music industry and business coaches for one-on-one coaching sessions, while also attending numerous industry-related conferences, workshops and masterclasses - all aimed to bolster their business skills and aid them in creating sustainable, long-term music businesses. Victorian Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, said the initiative achieves some hugely positive outcomes. "Our Music Works program aims to support the industry at all levels and Live Music Professionals helps to strengthen the music ecosystem by helping music businesses to take the next step," he said. "Last year's participants have already experienced significant growth and I look forward to seeing what's in store for our cohort this year."
Into the lion’s den of lies Fresh from the release of their highly anticipated second album, 'Celebrate the Lie', emerging Sydney act Born Lion is ready to bare their teeth for Sooki Lounge audiences. As part of their 2018 tour, the four piece is set to head to Begrave for a show on Thursday 31 May, bringing with them their celebrated sound, which has been described as 'angsty punk rock', and 'frenetic' and 'hardcore'. In the live arena, the band members have traversed the countryside many times on the band's own headline tours. In short, their shows are not to be missed. So, book your tickets and head down to Sooki on Thursday 31 May for an 8pm start.
Born Lion is ready to rock the Sooki Lounge in an anticipated performance. 181159 For more details, head to www.sookilounge. com.au, www.celebratethelie.com or check out Born Lion's Facebook page.
Solo worth cracking open Solo: A Star Wars Story Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke and Donald Glover Rated M
Skylark promoter, Ben Langdon. 181263
Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is an origin story for beloved Star Wars character Han Solo, is rollicking good fun, and yet another example of a well-structured blockbuster in what's proving to be a banner year for them. Han and his allies are forced by a crime syndicate to deliver a valuable element through a perilous route known as the Kessel Run. The mission is laid out in methodical fashion, but the film delivers a stream of tense obstacles to keep us and its nuanced, engaging heroes on their toes. Alden Ehrenreich is incredibly charismatic as Han, portraying a plucky, honourable young man who is sure of his abilities but never strays into arrogance. Donald Glover is a suave scoundrel as smuggler Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson plays a cynical yet endear-
ing mentor figure, and Emilia Clarke delivers possibly the best performance of her career as Qi'ra, Han's gentle yet morally conflicted childhood friend. The visual design is vibrant and appealingly retro (in keeping with the original Star Wars films), the action scenes are enthralling and well-composed, and the climax plays with our expectations in startling ways. Solo also shows admirable restraint as a Star Wars film, largely eschewing references and fan-service in favour of telling its own selfcontained story. With great characters and a tight narrative, Solo: A Star Wars Story is possibly the most cohesive film in this new batch of Star Wars films. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Olinda Creek Water Supply Protection Area
ACTIVITES/LIFESTYLE ASSITANT Permanent Part Time
Deer Control Program Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges District
The Olinda Creek Stream Flow Management Plan Amendment Consultative Committee is inviting community members to provide feedback on proposed amendments to the Olinda Creek Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA) Stream Flow Management Plan (SFMP). The Committee, appointed by Victorian Water Minister, Hon Lisa Neville MP was created to update the 2007 Olinda Creek SFMP with improved technical information, and refine surface water management rules in the catchment.
Parks Victoria’s conservation management to restore and protect park habitat includes the control of introduced plant and animal species. As a part of an ongoing strategy, notice is hereby given that Parks Victoria will be conducting a controlled, safe and humane deer control operation targeting Fallow and Sambar Deer in three areas of public land within the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges.
The SFMP sets out arrangements for management of water resources in the Olinda Creek area, ensuring that water resources are managed in an equitable manner and to ensure the long-term sustainability of those resources. It has been developed by the Committee that has representation of all relevant interests in the area. The main proposed changes to the SFMP relate to refining ban triggers in the lower catchment, updating target allocation caps, altering metering prescriptions and amending licence transfer prescriptions to support transfer of licences within the catchment in a sustainable way.

Athletes take lead By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes travelled to Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, on Saturday afternoon for Round 3 of the XCR18 season. Cross country racing in near perfect conditions on a testing course, reknowned for the ‘mud’ hole. The bog - as it eventually becomes - started out the day as a gentle flowing creek for the Under 14s races and ended as a treacherous obstacle for the Open Men’s. Great to see the Yarra Ranges support team applauding every successful exit but clearly baying for ‘mud’ as each of the the 1000-plus athletes attempted to clear the bog. Many shoes were lost or left behind. Some fantastic results with medals to Georgia Laven, Lily Peacock, Harry Norman, Madddie Laven and Kiara Flavel. Congratulations also to the fastest open Women’s and Men’s competitors, Georgia Brock and Seamus Dwyer, on their outstanding efforts to lead our teams to some solid results. Plenty of PBs, and, therefore, choccie frogs, were earned. Next the club has three teams entered into the LAV Cross Country Relays at Cruden Farm. Good luck to athletes representing the club in what will be a fun event. Saturday morning cross country will be at Lillydale Lake.
One of Victoria's most successful pistol clubs has been refurbished and upgraded to international competition standards. Member for Monbulk James Merlino visited the redeveloped Yarra Pistol Club in Lysterfield on Saturday 19 May to open the new facility. The development was made possible through a $718,000 grant from the Labor Goverments Shooting Sports Facilities Program and James Merlino, member for Monbulk he looked forward to see the club grow into the future. "This upgrade means the Yarra Pistol Club can grow and be more competitive - welcoming more members than ever before and host the big events," Mr Merlino said. The club has been an important part of the local community for more than 50 years, achieving many successes, including when club-member Sergei Eglevski won gold in the World University Shooting Championships, and silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in the rapid-fire pistol event. The club has also hosted the national pistol championships, but with changes in standards by the International Shooting Sports Federation, the club no longer met the requirements to host championship events - now with the grant they can. A new targeting system, more seating for fans and improvements to the clubroom facilities mean the club is now well placed to host major pistol events. Members will also be able to better hone their skills with the improved targeting facilities, and the club is now fully accessible for people of all abilities to come and enjoy the sport of pistol shooting.

Roadside rubbish report Illegal dumping of rubbish is a huge problem for VicRoads across Eastern Victoria, causing environmental and safety hazards, taking up many hours of labour and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. VicRoads Eastern Regional Director, Scott Lawrence, said that when members of the community report illegally dumped waste, valuable resources are redirected from delivering other important services to remove the items from public land. "The cost of labour, bin hire, disposal of waste items correctly and the use of specialist contractors occasionally to remove illegally dumped rubbish from roadsides, rest areas and truck pull-off areas is costing the Eastern Region more than $150,000 a year. "VicRoads is committed to keeping our roads clean, however waste control continues to be an ongoing challenge, particularly when people use the roadside as a dumping ground," Mr Lawrence said. The most common items removed from roadsides include tyres, mattresses, syringes, asbestos and household rubbish. A recent clean-up of a truck pull-up area involved bottles and bags of human waste. "Illegal dumping is not only unsightly but can also threaten wildlife, cause fires and lead to long-term contamination of land and waterways," he said. "I urge members of the community to report illegal dumping of rubbish to the EPA or contact the police." The illegal dumping of contaminated fill materials, tyres, manufacturing, and construction and demolition waste is an indictable offence, which can attract a maximum penalty of $610,700 or seven years' imprisonment for an individual, and more than $1.2 million for a corporation. The EPA 24-hour pollution hotline is 1300 372 842.

Stay safe on the road this winter as the chill sweeps in Winter isn't coming, it's here! RACV is warning motorists to be prepared and take extra care when driving in winter conditions. Driving in severe weather can be challenging and dangerous, so motorists should try to avoid the three big mistakes of winter driving. Poorly prepared vehicles, speeding and a failure to treat the icy conditions with respect are a disastrous cocktail that can lead to accidents and damage to vehicles. Poor preparation: Amazingly, RACV research has found that tyres were often neglected, with one in five cars on Victoria's road having at least one unroadworthy tyre. Many car owners also forget to look at other critical items, too. Check your tyres, windscreen wipers, the battery, lights, brakes, heater and cooling system before heading off. Slush and mud were particularly hard on vehicles, so drivers should get their cars ser-
viced regularly. We can't stress enough how important tyres are to a car's safety. In slippery conditions like you'd find in the snow, tyres need to be in tip-top condition. Tyres must have plenty of tread depth and no damage. They should also be inflated to the correct pressure. But, be aware, this can vary from car to car. The recommended minimum tyre pressures are usually listed on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb or glove box. Driving too fast for winter conditions: Remember, it takes much longer to stop in the wet, so don't follow other cars too closely when it is raining or if the roads are wet. Increase the gap between you and the car in front to allow for this. If you're driving in the high country and encounter snow, drive to the conditions and take it easy.
It's important to follow some important road safety tips this winter. 180748 Even if the snow has been cleared, the road is still likely to be slippery and black ice is always a danger. Use the brake, accelerator and steering smoothly. Always remember that the speed limit is just that; a limit. It is not telling you the speed you must drive at.
Drive at a speed that you are comfortable with and don't be pressured to speed up by other motorists. Not reacting to the worsening winter weather: If it is foggy, don't put your lights on high beam, because this makes the road harder to see. Instead, use low-beam, as this keeps the lights on the road. Use front and rear fog lamps if the conditions are bade enough, but remember the rules about when they can be used. In wet weather, use your air conditioner to prevent your windscreen from fogging up. However, if visibility is so limited that you can't see the edges of the road, or other vehicles at a safe distance, it's time to pull over and wait for the conditions to ease. At some alpine locations, snow chains are compulsory. VicRoads have an information page on the rules regarding their use.
Toyota: oh, what a feeling! By Peter Douglas Toyota Australia has won the Reader's Digest Trusted Brand 2018 award in the car category for the 13th year running. General Manager, National Marketing, Wayne Gabriel said that it was an honour to have received the award in 2018. "We know that Australians love our vehicles. "Winning this award, knowing that our guests trust us, and have voted us number one for 13 years in a row is incredible." 30 MAIL

The new Holden Commodore range is sure to impress Australian drivers. 178596
A brand new Commodore Your grandparents had one, so did your parents, and now it's your turn, as the all-new Holden Commodore is finally launched. And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero. With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing. Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology. The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times. There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers. mailcommunity.com.au
Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear! Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before. A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day. They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not? Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion. But that's not the only cool bit. To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required. "Commodore has been at the forefront of delivering new driver technology to Australians for the past 40 years and the 2018 Commodore elevates that to the next level," said Holden's Executive Director - Marketing, Mark Harland. "We've got genuine state-of-the-art technology such as the LED Matrix headlights
and Adaptive AWD but also a long list of user friendly features such as heated and cooled seats, massage driver's seat and colour headup display. "In terms of safety, Commodore delivers in spades with a 5-star ANCAP rating, Emergency Braking, auto headlights and rear-view camera available as standard across the entire range. "And with the range starting at just $35,990 driveaway, it all adds up to phenomenal value for money for our customers." The 2018 Commodore has been the recipient of significant Holden engineering input, designed to ensure the car has the distinctive and engaging feel Australians expect from a Commodore. High-tech driving aides, in addition to years of experience tuning every Commodore from the 1998 VT Commodore onwards, have resulted in Holden's Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, being confident this is undoubtedly a driver's car. "We've spent a lot of time making sure the new Commodore has the feel and handling you'd expect from a Commodore," Trubiani said. "We've worked on some unique content, including a distinctive Aussie steering tune to give it that familiar feel but it's the adaptive AWD that impresses most.
"The adaptive Twinster AWD system gives Commodore traction to a level it's never had before. In the wet, it sticks to the road like glue and in the dry, it feels like it's running on rails which is great for giving drivers confidence that when they turn the wheel, they know exactly where the car will go and what it will do." The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from Holden dealers nationwide from late February 2018 with customers encouraged to go and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. 40 years of Commodore DNA and learnings inspire evolution of an icon; Next-generation Commodore launches after over 200,000km local testing and unique Holden engineering input; Long list of Commodore firsts including Adaptive AWD, 360-degree camera and heated and cooled massage seats; Next-generation Commodore turns night into day with Adaptive LED Matrix headlights - 32 lights reading road, other cars and pedestrians; All-new Commodore awarded 5-star ANCAP.
