The editor’s desk How does anyone keep running for 42km or even 21km or even 10km? This is the question I asked a number of runners at Saturday's Runaway Noosa Marathon and many of them gave me the same answer. "It's all in your head," they said. I heard stories from people who couldn't run 100m when they started and now run several kilometres a number of times a week. I spoke to people who looked years younger than their biological age. Everyone I spoke to said they loved it. I think 3500 people can't all be wrong. In other news this week is the 20th birthday celebration of the Guilded Lilies sewing group. For two decades they have formed friendships and shared knowledge over the dwindling craft of dressmaking. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… AGREEMENT UNDER REVIEW

RUNNERS RELISH THE RIBBON More than 3500 athletes of all abilities gathered in Noosa on Saturday to celebrate their collective passion for running at the inaugural Runaway Noosa Marathon. Each had their reason for entering whether it was in search of a personal best, a marathon debut, much needed training or just some plain old fashioned fun. Brendan Cato and Mooloolaba triathlete Katey Gibb were victorious in their marathon debuts and in the inaugural year are now the proud holders of the Runaway Noosa Marathon course records. For Cato competing was great way for him to return to Noosa and show his respect for friend, the late Garth Prowd. "The course was fantastic and there was amazing support out there. I am stoked to win my first marathon on debut. I always wanted to run a marathon so that I could stop running. Now I have done that I don't know what will happen," he said. For Katey Gibb Runaway Noosa Marathon was a journey into the unknown and some valuable training to prepare her for IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast in August. "As this is the first marathon I have run I had no idea of what to expect. I had hoped to run three hours but did a 3:05. Time wasn't great but the four lap course was excellent, I loved it and had a really good time. It was great to have all the entertainment and the spectators. When there were less people on course was when I started to hit the wall but it was a really good all round event and the volunteers were excellent." "I come from an elite triathlon background and I hadn't ever concentrated as much on my running, so I tried to build my kilometres without getting injured I maxed at 100 km a week. Looking back now there are things I will change if I do another one in the future, but I was pretty happy with getting the kilometres in my legs." People entered the event in teams, as families or with friends and travelled to Noosa for the event from across the country. Ricky and Jacqui Swindale of Mt Coolum met through a running club and love running together. Both entered the half marathon with Ricky coming in third in the men's division. Jane Webb travelled from Melbourne to run the half marathon. Having never been good at sport at school she took up running later in life. When Yvonne Ahchee, 64, began the sport she couldn't run from one tree to another but after putting her mind to it is now inspiring others to run. "It's just perseverance," she said. ●

As the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation agreement nears its end Noosa Council is considering the renewal of a future agreement with the foundation and what funding arrangements may be included. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said deliberations on Council's future commitments and what conditions may be incorporated into a possible agreement were in play. "Those decisions will be made by the whole Councillor body, and the information will be made available when Council adopts its budget for the next financial year and when we finalise any possible funding deed with NBRF," he said. NBRF was set up by the previous Noosa Council as a company with a board of directors tasked with managing a trust which enjoys Deductible Gift Recipient status which allows philanthropic donations to be tax deductible, Cr Wellington said. "NBRF is not the only organisation seeking to meet the objectives of the Man in the Biosphere program," he said. "Indeed, Council has the lion's share of those responsibilities. Aspects of the UNESCO covenant are also embraced by various other organisations." ●

For more than 25 years the Zonta Club of Noosa has been working to raise awareness of women's rights and to put an end to violence against women and children. As part of their Mothers' Day Campaign this year, Bunnings Noosaville and Maroochydore contacted the Zonta Club of Noosa to find out what was on the wish list of SHINE Houses which provide crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence. They needed three large wall mounted clothes lines and a shed to store belongings so Bunnings came to the party and donated the three clothes lines and $150 in vouchers towards the shed. Recently the handover took place at the Noosa Bunnings store. Zonta Club of Noosa president Jan Comins was on hand when Siobhan (Noosaville store) and Sue (Maroochydore store) presented the clothes lines and vouchers to Diane Quinlan from the Salvation Army for the SHINE houses. ●

A VISION FOR NOOSA'S FUTURE BY MARGARET MACCOLL

I

n social science the built environment is the human-made surroundings. For Noosa awardwinning architect John Mainwaring the built environment should blend with the natural environment. When Mainwaring designed one of his signature developments, Viridian Noosa Residences at Noosa Heads, he had a vision of an Italian village connected by walkways and nestled into Noosa hill. Built on a former banana plantation the surrounding bushland was restored and care taken to retain existing trees. "We had to plot every branch, every tree," he said. The result is small-scale apartments of minimal environmental impact forming a backdrop

to Noosa. An ideal location the apartments have stunning views across Laguna Bay, are a three minute walk to Noosa Main Beach and Hastings Street restaurants, the National Park is its backyard and it provides socio-economic support to Noosa. "It's always been the aim of mine to design a building that fits in with the forest," he said. For the past 50 years Mainwaring has been at the forefront of Noosa architecture. He has been instrumental in retaining heritage buildings, resisting high rise developments, working with the environment and creating an Australian coastal style that has become synonymous with the area. Now he has identified an opportunity

to recapture some of the Noosa of old at Noosa Junction, revitalise an ageing demographic, introduce stylish affordable housing and incorporate a planned public space similar to a town square which has given an identity to cities across Europe since 500BC. He urged the community as stakeholders in their built environment to consider such a project. Early days of Noosa development John Mainwaring sailed his yacht into the former mouth of the Noosa River in the late 1970s. He was living on his boat when he set up business with fellow-architect Gabriel Poole in an A-frame building in Hastings Street. "I was sailing north for the winter and met up with Gabriel at the Yacht Club," he

said. "He asked if I could come and do some work with him. 'We should get up to Noosa. There's something happening up there'" Gabriel told him. "It evolved from there." That time in Noosa was "like an incubator" he said. "People came from all over Australia. There were French and South Americans. There was a real cosmopolitan feel. It was unmaterialistic," he said. "There were bohemians, artists, surfers. The attitude from environment to built environment evolved. The other thing that evolved was a cuisine and art culture. We had curb side eating before Brisbane. People didn't just live in Noosa, they settled in the villages in the hinterland - all the villages gained their own culture.

Noosa Junction proposal

"The green movement (started by Dr Arthur Harrold) was prominent and even the developers and real estate agents wanted to keep high rise out of the area. As it became more popular people regarded it as an environmental paradise." Two of his projects one of which was Noosa International set the tone for the area. High rise was mooted for both projects but it didn't eventuate and that set the control of heights in Noosa. "We were all escaping high rise and the urban congestion," he said. "There was an understated ethos for buildings in Noosa. "It could have been very different. "When we did Wallace Park some people wanted to put a sports hall on the park so you could see a big building but we moved it to a corner. "It was a philosophy where you couldn't see the building." There were plans mooted to replace the few historic buildings in Noosa with large developments. To prevent this happening Mainwaring initiated a Sunshine Coast branch of the National Trust and Halse Lodge, Wallace House and Mill Point were heritage-listed. Halse Lodge, originally Bayview Guest House, built by Walter Hay is the last remaining timber guest house in south east Queensland still being used for what it was built for, Mainwaring said. In addition to providing scarce affordable accommodation at Noosa Heads the building adds value through its contribution to the area's diversity, he said.

watched Noosa change. The widening of the Bruce Highway to four lanes brought more people to Noosa and increasing real estate prices have restricted buyers to an older and wealthier demographic. "The culture changed and the evaluation paradigm moved into another gear," he said. "Real estate prices have skyrocketed and the different demographics have brought in different tastes. There are some extremely wealthy people living here. The irony was they came up here as part of the movement, escaping the city. It was more than a sea change. Changing demographics have brought changes in architecture. "It is what it is. It's change and you can't have life without change," he said. "The green movement is so strong here. You've got that green control, that height control, the population control but the taste culture has changed a bit. Still the standard of architecture is very good up and down the coast."

Sunshine Coast. "I was asked to go to the city to do the Queen Street Mall. Then I got projects up and down the east coast of Australia". Mainwaring now works between Noosa, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. He established JMA Architects on the Sunshine Coast in 1985 and in 2016 Hollindale Mainwaring Architecture was formed with colleague Garth Hollindale. Mainwaring has been the recipient of numerous rewards and acknowledgements including Australia's top accolade in the industry, the Sir Zelman Cowan Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast. His company won the Noosa Council Building of the Decade Award for the St Vincent's Aged Care Facility and a Civic Design Award for merit as design director for the $25 million Queen Street Mall. He has worked in England and Denmark and served on committees including as Chairman of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, Sunshine Coast; Councillor at the Cooloola Sunshine Institute of TAFE; President of the Sunshine Coast Branch of the National Trust; Architectural Consultant for the Sippy Downs Town Plan and Chair of the State Government urban design committee overseeing the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. An avid art collector and philanthropist, John donated his unified private collection to USC, making it available to the public. A dynamic and diversified future In his interest to expand diversity in Noosa Mainwaring believes an opportunity

exists to create an area to attract a younger group to the region by transforming the unused bowls club at Noosa Junction into a town square, entertainment precinct, health facility and affordable accommodation. "There's some serious wealth in Noosa but the population is getting lopsided - it's an older, wealthy demographic," he said. "Younger people, who can't afford to live here, you need to make society tick." Studies show town squares act as visual markers that help people navigate a town and contribute to its identity. Becoming popular in small towns across NSW, these shared spaces offer a place for residents to sit and meet and provide a sense of community. "It could be a gathering space for all sorts of occasions. In Europe that's what makes the city tick," he said. "There's an opportunity to do night time entertainment in the bowls club where the noise is not going to bother anyone." "Commercial realities and cultural relevance must work 'hand in hand'. The rejected Coles proposal lacked potential community place-making. As with any urban design ideas there are always possibilities, synergies opportunities and conflicts. "There's a big opportunity to bring back the old Noosa way of life. Already there's backpackers providing diversity, curb side eating, a bus terminus and The J. All the bits in pieces are in place for a vibrant village. "This is the last opportunity to create a Noosa Village Square." â—?

Examples of his architecture can be seen across the shire with stand out buildings such as the Dragon House at Sunshine Beach attracting wide attention. KIDS WEARING IT BY MARGARET MACCOLL It takes a creative mind to make stylish children's clothing from recycled uniforms but a group of sewers at Cooroy showed just how that can be achieved. The array of children's clothing are made by the Uniforms 4 Kids group of volunteer sewers established by Yvonne Pattison. The group which are part of Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation program supply clothes to children displaced by domestic violence incidences or have had to leave their homes because of disaster and need assistance. Last week the group increased their efforts and delivered a collection of garments to Senior Sergeant Kim Cavell, officer-in-charge of the Sunshine Coast District Vulnerable Persons Unit. Snr sgt Cavell said the unit worked in

collaboration with agencies to assist victims of domestic violence and to engage the perpetrators of domestic violence to change their behaviours and keep them from reoffending. She said what was an increasing social problem needed collaborative measures to address it. The Uniforms 4 Kids sewers were assisting children going through a difficult time. "Kids might turn up to a foster home at 2am and have nothing with them. They might stay there for days, weeks or months," she said. "And it's a good use of old uniforms." The sewers receive recycled uniforms from the Queensland Police Force, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Australian Border Force, Australian Federal Police and Australia Zoo.

SPATE OF CAR THEFTS Noosa police have been investigating five car thefts over the past week across Peregian Beach, Noosaville and Cooroibah. Noosa senior sergeant Ben Carroll said one man had been arrested and police were confident of locating other offenders. All cars stolen were located undamaged. However camera gear was reported stolen from one of the vehicles.

SECURITY INCREASED IN HASTINGS STREET Hastings Street will be under the spotlight thanks to a $155,920 grant from the Federal Government to upgrade its ageing CCTV system. The funding will enable Council to install extra cameras near the bus interchange and to replace outmoded existing cameras. The system will also incorporate new number-platerecognition technology.

Uniforms 4 Kids sewers with Cooroy officer-in-charge Sgt Mal Scott and Snr Sgt Kim Cavell Cooroy Family Support centre's Liz Cocker said domestic violence was a considerable problem in the Noosa Shire with most victims referred to the centre from police, GPs or psychologists. "We've had six referrals in the past two weeks," she said. "We get calls most days." The centre helps victims through “The Hastings Street precinct’s crime rate is low, but having this new technology will ensure police will have a powerful investigative tool if and when needed,” Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said.

BOOK SALE SUPPORTS CHARITIES The Noosa Rotary big book sale over three days was a great success, attracting a record crowd with buyers purchasing over 12,000 books and

case management, providing counselling, crisis needs support and helps find accommodation. They often leave home with only the clothes on their backs. "I've picked up ladies at the train station with nothing but shopping bags. "They've been shopping and haven't been able to go home," she said. ● raising $25,000. From the money raised $20,000 will be delivered to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. A further $5000 will go toward supporting the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience - Thompson Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) to equip a children’s therapy room, providing scholarships for outstanding USC students and to help the Queensland Koala Crusaders protect koalas.

BEST COP ON THE COAST There isn't a better job for Sgt Mal Scott than being Cooroy police officer-incharge and there isn't anyone who could do a better job. This month this became official when Police Commissioner Ian Stewart presented Sgt Scott with the Rotary Sunshine Coast Police Officer of the Year award. Sgt Scott was shortlisted along with five other officers across the coast before a panel decided he was most deserving of the inaugural award, having met the required attributes which included kindness and compassion, devotion to duty, enthusiasm, community involvement and a sense of achievement."This award was very fitting for Mal - he is well known in his community and is held in the highest regard by all who know him, both personally and professionally," Commissioner Stewart said. Growing up in Dalby and Toowoomba was where Sgt Scott developed his love of the country and being a police officer was what he always wanted to do. "I just wanted to help people, to make a difference," he said. After training in Brisbane Sgt Scott was posted to Dalby then to Longreach where he said  he learnt about community policing. From there he moved to Caloundra for

He said while about 90 per cent of his days are spent dealing with negative issues in the community, acts of generosity and kindness, such as the delivery this week of childrens clothing made for victims of domestic violence, "empty the bucket and you start again." "It's things like this that inspire you to keep going," he said. Living in a small town means he knows everyone and has on occasion arrested friends. "At the end of the day I have to perform my duty, and they respect you for that," he said. Sgt Scott lives in Cooroy with his partner and their two children grew up in the town. ● Cooroy officer-in-charge Sergeant Mal Scott.

NEWS

A JOB WELL DONE Tourism Noosa owes much of its success to the efforts of its 104 volunteers and on Friday said thank you with a celebratory breakfast at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. Many of the dedicated team are long term volunteers with 30 per cent having been with the organisation for more than 10 years. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said while paid staff concentrate their efforts on bringing outsiders to Noosa it was up to the

volunteers to ensure they enjoyed their time in the shire. "They greet everyone with a smile. They are well informed. They tell people about the hinterland to ensure visitors are well dispersed and they make sure everyone has a great experience during their time in Noosa," he said. Volunteer co-ordinator Cathy Mitchell said the volunteers had a very important role to play in tourism and over the past year had clocked up 16,000 volunteer hours of work. ●

COMMUNITY SURVEY Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, is encouraging local residents to have their say on a range of topics in Wide Bay’s Community Survey 2018, being delivered to letterboxes across the electorate from this weekend. “This survey gives everyone the opportunity to have their say on a range of local, state and national issues,“ he said. “The questions in Wide Bay’s Community Survey 2018 canvass opinions on a range of policy fronts, including taxation, cost of living, jobs and the economy, welfare, transport, community safety, education, border protection and national security, health, seniors, environment, energy, and community and social issues.“ The survey should be returned to Mr O’Brien by folding and sealing the survey so the reply paid details are on the front by 15 June or completed online at www.llewobrien.com.au/survey. The Be-Safe Pool Fence - Portable Pool Fence Starter Kit, sold by Clark Rubber, has been recalled due to safety concerns. Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni issued the product recall this month after an investigation by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission showed it failed three tests of building product safety. “QBCC tests found that the latch doesn’t close and secure itself properly and this completely defeats its safety purpose,” he said. Minister de Brenni said that consumers who purchased the product are entitled to a full refund, which can be processed at Clark Rubber stores. ● noosatoday.com.au

Using Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technology, Bio-Well illustrates the state of a person’s energy field. When a scan is taken, a high intensity electrical field stimulates emission of photons and electrons from human skin; powerful imaging technology captures photon emissions given off by each finger. The images created using the Bio-Well system are based on the ideas of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each test is converted to a unique “Photonic Profile”, which is compared to the database of hundreds of thousands of data records using 55 distinct parametric discriminates. • View each scan in a variety of interesting ways with up to 7 display options. • A non-invasive approach to seeing the energy – light – information of your bio-ield. • Direct response analysis of any complementary practice to validate energy state. On your initial consultation, the Bio-Well system will be used to do a complete scan. The graphical results will be on the screen to see and discuss with the practitioner immediately

A SOCIAL PROBLEM REVEALED ON SCREENS Thankyou for your thorough, intelligent examination of what is a huge problem in our society: the overuse of screens by our children and teenagers. Not only was the problem explained fully, but sensible, do-able solutions were offered to parents. As a teacher at a time when gaming was becoming ubiquitous, I surveyed my 160 students at the beginning of the year about hours spent gaming. I put the forms aside until the end of the year, by which time I knew each individual a lot better. I found a very high (95 per cent) correlation between students who spend four-plus hours per week playing computer games, and disruptive classroom behaviour. These students appeared to have a much shorter concentration span. Since that time, academic studies have found similar results. The figures on viewing pornography in your article, 48 per cent of students, is very worrying, as it is having a detrimental effect on these people forming healthy romantic relationships, as it usually involves degradation of women, and is seen by many young people as normal behaviour. The article clearly illustrated why it is sensible to ensure that screens are kept out of bedrooms. If you want to ensure that your children have every chance at academic success, limiting screen time, and collecting mobile phones, tablets etc, before bedtime, is essential, as is encouraging ‘real life’ activities. A healthy mind in a healthy body will not happen if screen time is not limited. Schools also need to ensure that phones and tablets are either kept out of classrooms, or collected and stored accessibly, to only be used at the teacher’s behest. Joy Ringrose, Noosa

EVENTS POLICY NOT AT FAULT It is unfortunate that Phil Jarratt seeks to blame, at least in part, council’s Main Beach Events Policy for the demise of the Noosa Festival of Surfing. There is nothing in the council’s new policy that would prevent or inhibit the Noosa Festival of Surfing from occurring in 2019 and subsequent years. Indeed the policy clearly states that council gives precedence to events that require the

tains and completely ban the sale of plastic water bottles which are a blight on the environment. The big Unity water trucks are utilised at festivals and patrons can refill their own non-plastic bottles. Let’s get drastic and get rid of the plastic. Cherry Bright, Noosaville

LENSCAPE

IT’S NOT 1899

What Winter? Thanks for the reminder that beach life is year-round in our beautiful region, Shane Gaynon (taken at Peregian Beach). If you would like to send us your wildlife, landscape or lifestyle pictures, please email 'Lenscape' at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. beach and water as a core element of their activities. So an event like the Noosa Festival of Surfing would receive higher priority under the policy than, say, a cultural event on the beach. We would be very happy to receive an application for a surfing festival in 2019. Tony Wellington, Noosa Mayor

A RESPONSE TO CR WELLINGTON FROM PHIL JARRATT: Tony and I had a chat the other night and I have to say it’s a bit disappointing that he’s getting on the front foot over my remarks. I said the new events policy had been a factor in our company decision to not proceed, which it was. I did not say or suggest that council policy had led to the demise of the festival. There has been no demise. Our company has simply resigned from its management. Further, in every radio and TV

interview I have done on this matter I have acknowledged council’s support over many years.

COMPOSTABLE SHOPPING BAGS Why can’t Woolies (and Coles) use the green compostable bags made of a plant based fabric, with their logo instead of heavy plastic bags. If they really care, surely they would have gone one step further. They can still advertise their brand without it hanging around on the planet for millions of years and polluting our landfill and oceans. While it’s commendable to get rid of the single use bag and it reduces the use of so many bags, replacing it with a thick plastic bag is not environmentally sustainable. Better still, don’t provide any bags and people will soon learn to bring their own. People go to Officeworks and Bunnings and Organica and aren’t automatically given a plastic bag. The council should have more water foun-

With four out of five Queenslanders supporting a woman’s right to choose abortion I am sure there are many here in Noosa who are celebrating the result of the Irish referendum which overwhelmingly saw the majority Catholic country voting to legalise abortion. It is hard to imagine that abortion is still illegal in Queensland, with the laws governing this procedure dating back to 1899. Surprisingly Ireland has again shown that it when it comes to progressive issues they are way out in front of Queensland. Their support of marriage equality and legalisation of clothing optional beaches proves this point. Voluntary assisted dying is another important issue that has huge majority support here in Noosa and Queensland and yet our Queensland Government steadfastly refuses to even look at this matter. Why is this the case? Perhaps it is because they fear the religious right-wing bogeyman of the “silent majority”? Whenever progressive issues are finally put to a vote, this imaginary grouping of people evaporate into the mist and are never heard from again. Come on Queensland Government - stop listening to those few who want to hold us back and start listening to the Queenslanders who want these important social changes. Robin Bristow, Noosaville

CORRECTION In an article 'Sides drawn in surf club fight' (Noosa Today, 24 May), community group alignments were incorrectly identified in the community meeting. The article should have said the meeting heard from Peregian Beach Surf Club spokesman Rob Neely and Peregian Family and Friends Association spokesman Ollie Hooper, with no alignments identified. Also of note was that the meeting was prevented from gaining further information on a community survey on the issue when a spokeswoman was told by some attendees she had not been invited to speak. ●

Whose future is it anyway? This was the question posed by University of the Sunshine Coast History and Futures lecturer Dr Marcus Bussey when he visited Noosa U3A last Friday. The answer was less clear cut. "Futurism is about the process of inquiry, people coming up with strategic plans, finding the preferred one," he said. But determining your future is difficult when thought processes are engineered, Dr Bussey claims. "The way we think is caused by the culture we inhabit," he said. "We are deeply cultural beings. "If we play by the rules of today it's the future of the elite. "We need to fight our conditioning to become more who we are meant to be. If we're passive it will always be someone else's future."

Thursday, 31 May, 2018

Looking at the past has long been a way to predict the future. Looking at societies over time Dr Bussey pointed to the rise and fall of civilisations, often resulting from technological advances. Throughout history new technologies from the invention to the bow and arrow to the industrial revolution and the computer have changed society, advantaged some and disadvantaged others. "Each time newer technologies appeared a whole way of life disappeared," he said. Dr Bussey challenged attendees to look at the world differently, to look beyond culture. "Culture grew out of a need for collective security," he said. "Rationality is a moving feast. It comes from assumptions about how the world works. "The way the world runs privileges a certain group of people."

Dr Marcus Bussey. The discussion was not designed to provide answers but raised questions rarely asked on the culture in which we live and our place in it. ● noosatoday.com.au

BUILD YOUR OWN LUXURIOUS OASIS WHEN Noosa’s Starkey family sat down more than 20 years ago to draw up plans for Noosa Springs, they projected no more than 270 prestige home sites for this unique residential complex. Today, only six sites remain unsold and they are among the most desirable in a community that has set new standards in quality, security and style. They are part of The Oasis precinct, and border the 17th and 18th holes of the championship golf course, which forms the centrepiece of the Noosa Springs complex. Those lucky enough to live at The Oasis enjoy magnificent views from their beautiful homes - pristine fairways, manicured greens, sculpted bunkers and a sparkling lake. Situated within a secure, gated precinct, only 3km from iconic Hastings Street and close to the Noosa national park and the region’s spectacular surf beaches, The Oasis is a delightful place to live at any time. But for a golfer, it represents paradise. Noosa Springs’ 18-hole, par 72 golf course, designed by golf architect Graham Papworth, is a beautiful layout, its fairways snaking by lakes, ponds and tropical forest, and providing an enjoyable challenge for all golfers. It is consistently rated one of the finest courses in Australia, and is so highly regarded that the Australian PGA chooses to host its annual Q School qualifying tournament at Noosa Springs each December. Most Noosa Springs residents make regular use of the resort itself, only a few minutes away by golf cart. The clubhouse is the social hub of the resort, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner for members and guests. There’s a delightful bar which spills out on the terrace, where golfers sit, relax and enjoy

a cool drink after a round. Across the terrace is the Golf Shop, which provides all the services and equipment of a modern pro shop, as well as a range of golfing apparel that would not be out of place in a shopping mall in Sydney or Melbourne. Nearby is the Spa, providing facilities and treatments to relax the senses and nurture the body, mind and spirit. Close by are the fitness and tennis centres. Residents of The Oasis have preferred access to membership of Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort, allowing them access to these world-class facilities around the clock. To reach The Oasis, you drive down a tree-lined driveway, pass through a gated entrance, and past a delightful park. Although an integral part of the Noosa Springs community, The Oasis has its own body corporate, dedicated to the management and maintenance of its parkland and streetscapes. Originally there were 27 home sites within The Oasis precinct. The six remaining are at least 800m2 in size. The homes already completed comprise a mix of a single storey and double storey. All have at least four bedrooms, generous indoor and outdoor living areas, lap pools, and provide a benchmark of luxury on a grand scale. Lush, subtropical vegetation line the clay-paved streets. Architectural covenants assure that homes within The Oasis enclave will all be built to the awardwinning standards of Noosa Springs. The Oasis provides a rare opportunity for astute buyers to live within one of the most desirable golf resorts in Australia, and enjoy a lifestyle reminiscent of a never-ending holiday. Contact Bob Goode (0418 711 319) or Bronwyn Collins (0407 492 824) who will be delighted to arrange an inspection. ●

HOLIDAY TAX: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WITH tax time fast approaching, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has warned it will crack down on holiday let home tax deduction claims. The large number of mistakes, errors and false claims made by rental property owners who use their units or houses for personal holidays has put holiday home owners in the spotlight. ATO assistant commissioner Kath Anderson said the tax office would focus on taxpayers who claim deductions for holiday homes that are not actually available for rent, or only available to friends and family. “While private use by family and friends of a holiday home is entirely legitimate, it does reduce your ability to earn income from the property,” she said. “This in turn impacts the deductions you can claim. “You can only claim deductions for your holiday home if your property is genuinely available for rent. “You cannot claim for times when you were using it for your own personal holidays or letting friends and family stay rent-free. “It’s not OK to expect everyone else to pay for your holiday. “Holiday home owners also need to remember that if their property is rented to friends and family at mates rates, they can only claim deductions for expenses up to the amount of the income received.” Ms Anderson said some taxpayers also claim their property is available for rent, but when the ATO investigates, it is clear there is little intention of renting it out. “We see things like unreasonable conditions placed on prospective renters, rental rates set above market rates, or failing to advertise a holiday home in a way that targets people who would be interested in it,” Ms Anderson said.

When can you claim? You can claim deductions if your property is genuinely available for rent. Here are some guidelines: Advertise The property should be advertised to a wide audience. Advertising through a real estate agent or an online site is not always enough to demonstrate that a property is genuinely available for rent, neither is only advertising locally or by word of mouth. Maintenance The property must be in a location and condition that will mean tenants will want to rent it. If your property is run down or in a remote location, it may not be realistic to expect it will appeal to anyone. Set reasonable rates Charging rent above market rates in order to deter tenants could mean your property is considered to not be genuinely available for rent. If you, your family or your friends stay for free, your property will not meet the criteria for tax deductions during that period. If you are charging mates rates the allowable deductions are limited to the amount of rent charged, not market rates. Accept tenants If you refuse to rent out your property to potential tenants without a good reason, your property might not meet the criteria for being genuinely available for rent.

TAX TIME: Do you know what you can and can't claim on a holiday rental? “Incorrect rental property claims will not go unnoticed. “Whether it is a genuine mistake or a deliberate attempt to over-claim, new technology, data matching and other systems allow the ATO to identify unusual claims. “Where something raises a red flag, it will be investigated. “Property owners whose claims are disproportionate to the income received can expect scrutiny from the ATO.” Ms Anderson said all rental property owners should double-check their claims before lodging their tax return, even if submitting through a tax agent.

“Make sure that you declare all rental income and only claim deductions for periods that the property is rented or was genuinely available for rent at market rates,” she said. “Be sure to keep accurate records of the income you receive from your rental property, expenses you incur, and evidence of the property being rented or genuinely available for rent at market rates. “You should also keep records of who stayed at the holiday home and when, including the time you and your family stay at the property.” Visit ato.gov.au/holidayhomes and ato. gov.au/rental for more information. ●

FAIR WEATHER BY HOLLIE HARRIS What a wonderful time at the Fair. Despite the weather St Andrews Anglican College had a great turn out. Organisers would like to give thanks to everyone who helped bring the annual fair together "Our staff, parents, volunteers, students and musicians who gave so much of their time with the preparation as well as on the day. We ended with a bang once again thanks to an awesome fireworks display sponsored by Mark Bain Constructions. The final amount raised will be announced once all expenses are calculated, but we know the Fair is not all about making money. Seeing our community come together for a great day is what makes it all worthwhile." ●

FOCUS ON ‌ Winter Warmth

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A VISIT? "For a fresh approach to your health and skin cancer care" visit Noosa Clinic this Winter and keep on top of those Winter nasties. SKIN CANCER Noosa Clinic would like to remind us that although the weather has gone cooler, we must still be vigilant about our skin protection. For your skin checks, you can be assured a thorough examination by Dr Desh Jayasinghe. Accredited with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia and fully trained in cross polarised dermoscopic skin examination and dermoscopic digital photography, Desh has a special interest in skin cancers. Skin examinations with Desh will involve dermoscopic imaging. Desh is also actively involved in teaching with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Head into the Clinic for a comprehensive check with Desh.Preventing skin cancer is also about knowing your risk level. The most effective management is early detection and treatment. It's your doctor's job to diagnose skin cancer, but you will know better than anyone else if something on your skin is sore, changing, abnormal or new. Remember - together with sun protection, early detection is your best defence against skin cancer. Most people have made all their moles by the time they are 40. A new mole after this age is more suspicious, and the older you are the more suspicious a new mole is.

Get your skin checked by an expert. If you do find a spot or mole of concern, see your doctor for either a "spot check", or a full skin check. Become familiar with the spots and moles on your skin. You should check your own, and/or your partner's, skin regularly. If you haven't had your skin checked recently, make an appointment now to see Dr Desh Jayasinghe. Flu People talk a lot about colds and flu at this time of year and Noosa Clinic shed some light on what makes these illnesses so different. It's important to realise that they are both caused by different viruses. Colds are common. Children many get 5-10 colds per year while adults may only get 2-4. Colds affect the nose, throat and upper airways with symptoms being

coughing, sneezing, blocked or runny nose and congestion. The flu is a viral infection affecting your nose, throat and sometimes your lungs. Typical symptoms include fever, sore throat and muscle aches. Symptoms are more severe than a cold. There is a vaccine available for the flu which is needed each year, as it is only effective for a few months and is recommended for those at high risk such as the elderly, young children and chronically ill. Good hygiene is one of the most important ways to prevent colds and flu. Book in for your flu vaccine now at Noosa Clinic 306A/90 Goodchap St, Noosaville or phone 5449 7600 for your appointment. NOOSA TODAY 23

NEWS

SMALL STEP FORWARD A MAJOR HELP FOR MEN’S SHED BY RON LANE In what can only be described as another step forward a group of some 25 members of the Noosas Mens Shed last week gathered to officially accept, from Noosa Rotary, the donation of a Bosch Compound Mita Saw. After a warm welcome by Mens Shed President Paul Asbury, Noosa Rotary President Tess Alexandroff spoke of the on- going relationship between the two organisations. "I take great pleasure in being here and making this presentation of something that no doubt will be of major benefit in your line of work.

We have been with you from the beginning and our relationship is definitely a two way street. We make donations of various kinds and you assist us with man power. (For various projects)." Following this wood working coordinator and former builder Tony Sievers took the time to explain the many users of this tool to visitors. Amongst the many good points the saw has a built-in laser for easy precision cutting and extension bars for extra support while cutting long blocks. It can also be used for square cutting and cuts at many different angles. "All members must go through a thorough induction before

using," said Tony. At the completion of formalities members and guests were entertained to a barbeque and were free to walk round the grounds. Some were surprised as to the variety of projects under way; for example the vegetable tanks which are very successful drew many positive comments. Despite seeming to some to be just a small occasion this donation will be in times to come a major help in the various projects that the men choose to undertake. And no doubt some will be a massive help to the people and clubs within our community. ●

WORK FUTURE Noosa Chamber of Commerce (CCIQ Noosa) believe Noosa region is uniquely positioned to realise the opportunities that global connectivity provides. Chamber president Dr Steven Boyd said the forum was designed to uncover stories from local business people and representatives from all levels of government on the future of working in Noosa. On the night local innovators and owners will talk about the ways they are shaping their businesses to compete in a more globally connected economy while politicians from all levels will contribute their insights. "Noosa Council is focussed on diversifying the local economy," Cr Wellington said. "A recent Lucid Economics profile for the Shire noted that there was strong employment growth across 12 sectors. That's music to our ears, and indicates why Noosa is currently experiencing an unemployment rate well below the State average" Ms Bolton said the future of our economy and employment opportunities lay in diversification and leveraging the Noosa brand. "The key is to attract investment and talent, so that we can create the environment, pathways and culture for existing business and start-ups to succeed," she said. Dr Boyd sees the forum as an opportunity to engage in a longer-term discussion around the future of work. "By sharing these stories and understanding the impacts we can inform decision making and better provision for business enabling resourcing, training and infrastructure," he said. The forum will be held at The J Theatre on Thursday 7 June at 5pm. ●

SOCIAL SCENE SEWING UP FRIENDSHIPS When schools stopped teaching sewing the Guilded Lilies Tewantin Neighbourhood Group joined the Australian sewing guild to takeon the task. On Saturday they celebrated 20 years learning to sew and building lifelong friendships along the way. Founder Annette Mole had a fabric and haberdashery shop in Noosaville and started holding classes there. "There were people out there who wanted to know how to sew and I thought that was great," she said.

"I rounded up a few people I knew would be helpful and now it's been going for 20 years. It's about sharing our knowledge. We have teachers come or one in the group who knows something shows the others how to do it. And we teach beginners to sew. "One young lady came in with a sewing machine she'd won, still in a box. She said I won it but I don't know what to do with it. By the end she could sew anything she wanted." Annette said she was thrilled to see the group still going so strong. ●

LIVE

THERE’S JUST NO STOPPING DAN To watch Dan Sultan hold an audience in the palm of his hand is to see a storyteller unafraid to lay it all out there: his troubles, desires and all those tales dragged from his life onto the stage. Ever since Sultan delivered his debut album, Homemade Biscuits, in 2006 at the age of 22, music lovers from all walks of life have found a home in his ability to bare his longings and his wounds, his rich and soulful voice spilling all sorts of guts and glory over memorable rock, roots and blues hooks. Yet, there has also long been the sense that Sultan is the baton-holder of Australia's greatest musical potential. Though swarms of festival crowds and a collection of NIMA (Album of the Year, Song of the Year) and ARIA (Best Rock Album) awards might suggest otherwise, there's a lingering feeling that Sultan's boundless talent and gift for storytelling noosatoday.com.au

have been building, striving to be truly realised by the man who contains them. Even as 2014's Blackbird album cracked the top five of the ARIA Albums Chart and was certified gold, many were talking about what might come next. On Killer, Sultan steps out as the songwriter he has always promised to become. From the erupting gospel chorus of first single 'Hold It Together' to the jazz-inflected lilt of 'Should've Known' and the classic FM pop nous of 'Reaction', Sultan's fourth studio album makes itself known as the record on which Dan Sultan becomes that rarest of things: his own musician. By the time Killer reaches its closing track, 'Easier Man', Sultan delivering a painfully honest reflection on how his inner demons have played out, nothing short of a national treasure is unveiled. "It's been a long process to make

this album, looking back on it all," Sultan says. "I've spent a long time working on this record. With the writing, it was all about evolving. I wasn't even necessarily thinking about the album as such, I was just writing for the sake of writing, and the album made itself known over time." To say that Killer is not only a portrait of a songwriter at a crucial moment in his craft and in his life, but also a portrait of a country at this moment in time, is not a bridge too far. Sultan's fourth album is personal and farreaching, a reflection on his life and a call for all our lives to pull closer together. It's also an exciting and hookfilled journey of a record, one that urges us to look at who Dan Sultan is, right here, right now. Each intimate and acoustic performance of his current tour will

see Sultan re-imagining all of his most recent release, the stirring ARIA #5 debuting, critically acclaimed Killer (out now via Liberation Records), including singles 'Hold It Together, 'Kingdom', 'Magnetic' and fan-favourites 'Cul-desac' and 'Reaction'. In addition fans will be treated to a handful of classics from his decade-long back catalog (expect hits from Blackbird, Dirty Ground, Get Out While You Can and Homemade Biscuits) Don't miss this one -The Dan Sultan Killer Solo Tour When: Friday 15 June, 8pm Where: The J, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction. Xavier Rudd

Missing in London by Anna Davies

Jurassic World

Following up the success of 2012's Spirit Bird would be a daunting undertaking; aside from its strong political messages, it was a powerful, rootsy release that captured the imaginations of many and put Rudd in the highest demand since his inception back in 2000. Storm Boy retains the passion the troubadour is known for, although this time some less provocative tracks lack punch. He shares his concerns about greedy companies (Best That I Can), terrorism and threats to the environment (Keep It Simple), the issues that continue to plague the lives of our First People (Gather The Hands) but he also celebrates all the things that are right with our country, like kookaburras singing (Storm Boy) and a sundered love (Before I Go). ●

Life finds a way. It's been three years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles. When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs. Owen is driven to find Blue, his lead raptor who's still missing in the wild, and Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now makes her mission. Arriving on the unstable island as lava begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy that could return our entire planet to a perilous order not seen since prehistoric times. ●

Missing in London is the third in the Anna Davies Mystery Series and is now available at Sandy Pages Bookshop in Noosa Junction. Arthur Hambledon, Anna's best-selling author, has just finished his latest book which he says "will raise some eyebrows." Then Arthur disappears, along with the manuscript. Anna Davies is working in London as a Senior Editor for a respected Publishing Company. When her most famous author goes missing, Anna is determined to find out what happened to him. ●

BEAT THIS FOR A LUNCHTIME BACKDROP BY HOLLIE HARRIS It's difficult to beat the backdrop of the spectacular Laguna Bay when dining out. Bistro C, just a step away from the white sands of Noosa Main Beach offers a relaxed, light filled space for the perfect leisurely breakfast, long lunch, afternoon cocktail, or moonlit dinner. Chef Dayle Merlo created each menu inspired by the amazing local produce our region has to offer. His team's passion for food is evident in the award-winning cuisine. Bistro C's menus showcase the changing seasons in carefully created dishes. Including perennial favourites such as succulent steak, locally caught fish, oysters, and signature dishes like caramelised pork belly and a coconut chicken salad, as well as calamari that will melt in your mouth, the menu is something truly special. With breakfasts like Spanner crab and egg remoulade with shaved fennel, edamame beans, capers, pickled zucchini and sesame flat bread or sticky beef, bean, and charred pimento soft tacos, diners are offered something different at Bistro C. Perhaps the caramelised pork belly and seared scallops or the grilled rib eye with rosemary salted crushed potatoes for lunch? The marmalade glazed duck leg is beautifully balanced with the citrus emulsion and grilled stone fruits and greens or keep it simple with fresh barramundi or

calamari. For dinner by the silvery moon over water, you can't go past good old local seafood spaghetti. It's fresh off the boat and served straight from the pan for one or two to share. If you fancy sharing a few dishes

with friends over some cocktails, everyone will love Bistro C's karaage bug tails, served with a Tiger prawn and kaffir lime rice cake. Throw into the mix some Coffin Bay oysters, pork and chestnut dumplings and sticky lamb ribs with a side of greens and let

the afternoon roll into evening. Bistro C is a long-standing favourite of locals and visitors to Noosa Heads and is open from 7.30am until late, seven days. â—?

MY NUMBER 1 PLACE TO EAT BY HOLLIE HARRIS I've kept this one under my hat for awhile as it's genuinely my favourite place to eat in Noosa. Sharing my local knowledge is what I do, so I knew it was coming and this place really deserves a huge wrap. so t's time to let the cat out of the bag.If you haven't been to A Taste of Spice in Noosa Junction yet, then you're missing out on a little gem in the culinary world. Forget 5-star dining, pristine plates of foodie art and all of that house-made, locally sourced, slow food when you dine at 'Spice.' This place is basic street food style all the way, but it's really bloody good. There are a few reasons this place impresses me time and time again. And I'm not the only one - it's always full of locals and often booked out, which says it all. The

Char Kway Teow is perfectly charry. first reason is the food, of course. I travel to South East Asia every year for the love of the food and owner/chef Anil Dutt prepares meals which are as good as any I have found on my travels. Better even. He makes one of the best Singapore laksa I have ever had and the Laksa is truly world-class. Ikan Bilis (very spicy crispy anchovies) sprinkled over any dish is how I roll. A fiery Beef Rendang or Malaysian Curry are my absolute go-to's here. I highly recommend the Char Kway Teow and any of the noodles dishes and curries too. Don't let the takeaway ambience fool you - at night the tables are extended on to pavement, but if you're after classy, don't bother. This is small Asian style grunge but with all the smells and clanking of pots you'll find in any busy eatery in Kuala Lumpur. The food is prepared in front of you and the service is authentic. I love that owner, Anil, finishes up the evening with a few visits to diners and always remembers a face. Where else in Noosa does the chef chat to his customers? I leave Spice feeling like I really got everything I paid for, every single time. The prices are realistic and affordable too - it's just an all-round winner. noosatoday.com.au

Cooroy MEAT-FREE SUNDAY ROAST WITH YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS BY HOLLIE HARRIS "You don't need beef for a hearty Sunday roast. This vegetarian twist on a classic is cheaper, quicker and equally delicious, complete with Yorkshire puddings and a vegie gravy." - Matt Preston. INGREDIENTS 1kg Kent pumpkin, unpeeled, cut into 3.5cm wedges, halved crossways 6 small potatoes, unpeeled, halved 2 large red onions, peeled, quartered leaving bases intact 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil 4 fresh thyme sprigs 1 bunch baby carrots, peeled, trimmed Cooked baby peas, to serve Fresh baby continental parsley, to serve English mustard, to serve Horseradish cream, to serve VEGETARIAN GRAVY 50g butter 100g sliced Swiss brown mushrooms 1L (4 cups) vegetable stock 60ml (1/4 cup) sweet sherry or muscat 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 teaspoon Vegemite YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS 190g (1 1/4 cups) plain flour 250ml (1 cup) milk 4 eggs 125ml (1/2 cup) grapeseed oil METHOD Step 1 To make gravy, melt half the butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat until foaming. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring, for 4-5 minutes or until golden. Add stock and bring to the boil. Turn off heat and set aside for

30 minutes to develop the flavours. Strain stock through a fine sieve into a jug. Set aside. Step 2 Meanwhile, preheat oven to 220C/200C fan forced. Place pumpkin, potatoes and onion in a large roasting pan. Drizzle with oil. Sprinkle with thyme and season. Toss to coat. Roast for 30 minutes. Turn the vegetables over and add carrots. Roast for a further 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Transfer to a baking tray. 3 Meanwhile, to make the Yorkshire puddings, sift flour into a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Add milk and eggs and whisk until well combined and smooth. Set aside. Step 3 Increase the oven temperature to 230C/210C fan forced. Place 1 tbs grapeseed oil into each hole of six 100ml muffin pans. Place the muffin pan on a tray. Place in the oven for 10 minutes or until the oil is hot. Remove from oven and evenly pour Yorkshire batter among pans until batter is about 1cm from the top of the pan. Place muffin pan on tray on the top shelf of the oven and place roast vegetables on the shelf underneath. Bake for 20 minutes or until puddings are puffed and golden. Step 4 To finish the gravy, add sherry or muscat to the roasting pan and bring to the boil over high heat. Cook, scraping the base to remove any bits, for 2-3 minutes or until the liquid has reduced to about 1 tbs. Reduce heat to medium. Add remaining butter and stir until melted. Add flour and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until foaming. Gradually stir in reserved mushroom stock until well combined. Bring to the boil. Simmer rapidly for 10 minutes or until gravy has thickened. Stir in Vegemite. Step 5 Divide the roasted vegetables and Yorkshire puddings among serving plates. Top with the baby peas and drizzle with the gravy. Scatter with parsley and season. Serve with English mustard and horseradish cream.

for free vaccines. 3. Practice good hygiene even if you get the flu shot. Getting vaccinated doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get the flu, but it greatly reduces the risk. This can also stop the spread of infection to other vulnerable groups, including babies too young to get immunised. 4. Know that post-flu-shot symptoms are normal. The flu vaccine is not a live vaccine, which means you can’t catch the flu from the shot. Common side-effects such as temporary soreness at the injection site, low-grade short-lived fever (lasting one to two days) and muscle aches relate to the vaccine stimulating the immune system. If you continue to feel unwell after a flu shot, speak to your local GP. ●

With last year’s flu season the largest since the 2009 pandemic year, it’s time to be informed about the most clinically appropriate time to receive their flu shots to protect against this year’s approaching flu season. 1. Get vaccinated in May. Flu vaccines provide the most protection in the first three to four months after they are received. With our peak flu season typically occurring between June and September, getting vaccinated in May is advisable. 2. Check if you’re eligible for a free vaccine. This year’s new vaccines will be free for people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 15 years and children aged between six months to under five years of age are eligible

Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss. To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of Ultra Violet or UV rays and also absorb most of high-energy visible (HEV) radiation, or blue light. Although HEV rays have longer wavelengths (400-500 nm) and lower energy than UV rays, they penetrate deeply into the eye and can cause retinal damage. While some blue light (blue turquoise) regulates our biological clock, retina harming blue-violet light is a risk factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By filtering it out with Spectral Control® technology helps preserve your sight.

Serengeti Spectral Control technology excels at diminishing atmospheric haze, filtering up to 96% of blue light to reduce blue blur and visible noise, while enhancing contrast and sharpness. As the founder of Photochromic technology Serengeti leads the industry in creating lenses that adapt to any light condition in any setting. Surprisingly, cloud cover doesn't affect UV levels significantly. Your risk of UV exposure can be quite high even on hazy or overcast days. This is because UV is invisible radiation, not visible light, and can penetrate clouds. Also, children are more susceptible to retinal damage from UV rays because the lens inside a child's eye is clearer than an adult lens, enabling more UV to penetrate deep into the eye. RON WEST KNOWS FILMS Majestic Theatre icon Ron West, 85, has looked into his massive library of awesome films and has come up with some of his favourites for hie Ron West Film Fest from 1-4 June. They are not the silent films the Majestic Theatre is known for this time, but some award winning classic 'talkies' spread over several genres. Ron owned the Majestic for 36 years and retired four years ago. The new committee headed by Cherry Bright lured him out of retirement and he is now an active member of the Majestic Theatre, a place he calls his second home. He plays for the silent movies shown every second and fourth Saturday at noon and is busy cataloguing his massive library of movies and also hundreds of pianola roles which have been donated to the theatre. Ron receives regular standing ovations for his brilliant piano accompaniment of the movies as he can play non stop for 90 minutes improvising as he goes. He recently acknowledged he played for the 'Son of the Sheik' movie 4,128 times. - why we are all susceptible? Full details available on U3A website www.u3anoosa.org.au or phone reception on 5440 5500.

FRIDAY FORUM Researcher Tara McKenzie is this week's guest speaker discussing waste in the tomato industry. Up to 87 per cent of undamaged, edible tomatoes harvested from a commercial Queensland farm were rejected and wasted based on appearance, a study has found, highlighting the problem of food wastage. Tara McKenzie, an environmental scientist at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said that at every point in the supply chain, edible tomatoes that were slightly odd-shaped or marked or deemed too small or too large were rejected because they didn't meet market standards for premium, unblemished product. The forum starts at 10.30am with coffee on offer at 10am. The morning concludes at 12.15pm. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for information. For those interested in an interpretive birding walk before the forum, you are invited to meet Valda in the Environment Centre car park at 8.30am.

AROUND THE GROUNDS PLAYERS ARE STEPPING UP

PLAYERS SHOWING SKILLS U6s Noosa v University and Saints Round 6 was a home game for the Dolphins U6's playing University and Saints. We are seeing more side steps and more tries and the boys are getting better in defence and dropping back. Congratulations to Joshua Schurmer and Matthew Wray for being named Man of the match and to Harry Ward for receiving a certificate from Saints. Welcome to our newest members Ben McCready and Joshua Shurmer - at this rate we will need a third team! U7s Noosa Fins vs Saints The Noosa Fins put on their best attacking display of the season against Saints, showing real progression in their quick passing and direct running, to run in a number of tries in front of their supportive home crowd. Macalastair Moore was in great form in the first half, showing great footwork to beat 3 players close to the left hand touchline and get the ball down over the try line. There was more attacking rugby to enjoy in the second half, with man of the match and birthday boy Luke McCready, celebrating his big day with a brace of tries, to top off a great team performance. U8s Noosa Fins v Noosa Reds It was the clash of the Noosa Under 8's this week where we were lucky enough to play at our home grounds. Our captain and try scorer Hamish Payne lead his team on the field ready to take down the Reds. The Fins went in to tear the ball away, Reds showed some gaps which led Fin Ethan Marshall in for a great sneaky try. Noah's tackling was awesome and Alex's confidence has improved more and more each week gaining him our Ben and Jerry's Player of the Day. Well done Alex Bingham. Coach Shane is Super Proud of our Under 8 legends! U10s Noosa Fins 59 def Saints 21 Round 6 was another cracker of a game

BY DOUG MCCONNELL

Ocean Steinback palms off a Saints player. at our home ground. Even this early in the season the Noosa Fins Under 10's did not disappoint the spectators both on the side lines and up at the club house with a win against the Saints. The Saints scored the first 2 tries in the first 3 minutes and we all thought that the game was already lost but we did not factor in the determination from the Fins who dug deep and only let the Saints score another try in the entire game. A lot of the team only turn 10 this year but their understanding and commitment to the game and their team and their mental ability far exceeds their 10 years. We can't wait to see what this Noosa Fins Under 10's team can produce throughout the rest of the season. U10s Noosa Reds 36 def University 10 A strong team effort was called for by the coaching panel as history dictated that the University side would turn up and give a passionate performance as is their custom. From the kickoff it was clear that the Noosa

lads were prepared and determined to put in a complete performance, they did just that as they went into halftime with a slender 12 point lead. Uni swung the momentum in the second half and the Reds found themselves in a genuine battle for the ball as the opposition ran in two quality tries. Experience and fitness shone through as the Reds absorbed the pressure and struck back with a few strong forward drives that put the Uni forward pack on the back foot and allowed the eager noosa backs space to roam. An entertaining game played early on a cold and rainy Saturday morning was enjoyed by a healthy crowd who applauded both sides for their sportsmanship and bravery. Dominos pizza player of the day was George White. U14s Noosa 26 def Grammar 24 Noosa made it 3 consecutive wins and moved up to 2nd in the ladder after this traditional close encounter against a feisty Grammar side. The Fins came very close to scoring more tries on several occasions which would have made life easier for players and spectators alike but the final result and maximum points were fully deserved. Tries: James Gelling (3), Jason Burns Conversions: Jarrah Charlesworth (3) ●

A WIN FOR THE EAGLES A very exciting weekend for our Noosa Eagles players as they all really come together as teams, put skills to play and all walk away with a win! Three teams played side by side in Caloundra on Saturday, starting on feild 1 with our U7 Gold! The kids have a great time on field together as they learn more about calling out to each other and passes the ball down the feild. With a win 3-1, well done to Sienna who got player of the week for her efforts on defence! Muddy fields and wet boots didn't stop the Noosa U8 Gold team from securing a strong victory over the Buderim Force team in Maroochydore. Congratulations to all our boys for improved positional play this

week, which allowed us to quickly move the ball down the field to score six amazing goals. You all demonstrated improved long game skills, excellent team play and sportsmanship - well done! Special mention to Man of the Match Charlie for playing with unwavering determination, to Kyro for his fast running game and goal scoring, and Nate for his excellent defence of the back. Well done! Both U10 Black and Gold had exciting games side by side both leaving the feilds with fantastic wins! To see the bond between the players and the skill each team are bringing to field is fantastic! Well done to Rohnan, Lenny and Jaymie for receiving players of the week! ●

The quality of golf might not have been quite up to US Masters standard, but the level of fun was certainly much higher. A full field of golfers - complete with an octet of nuns resplendent in their habits - turned out for the annual Courses on Course merriment at Noosa Springs on Thursday 17 May. The fun round of golf mark the start of the Noosa Food and Wine Festival - one of the region's iconic events. And, in true festival spirit, delicious food and wine was on offer at each of the nine holes.

Every organization has to re-build on an ongoing basis or it will at some point lose its vitality. Noosa's pennant team in the golf competition won the pennant last year and have either won or been top contenders several years prior to then. Retirement and impending retirement mean that other players have to step up and that process is one that takes time. Noosa and possibly Coolum are in that process this season. Noosa travelled to Coolum for this round 3 match. Noosa's team this week had only one player with a 6 handicap in a competition where players with handicaps of 1 to 8 are eligible. As a result the Noosa team conceded 8 free turns to Coolum in this match. The result - a stunning 7 matches to 3 with hoops run 70 to 57 in favour of the home side. Individual match results follow, Noosa scores shown first. In the 1/2 singles Galena Makarova was defeated by George Oliver 7:4; Sally Stopps lost narrowly to William Yipp (6:7) while conceding him an extra turn. In the reverse singles Galena won against William (7:6) even after him having a 2 free turn advantage. Sally lost (7:5) to George, leaving Coolum up 3 matches to 1. In the 3/4 singles Ray Powley gave away one free turn and won (6:5) over Lionel Silberg. Susan Powley won against Gary Byrne (7:6).In the reverse 3/4 singles Ray and Susan had the tables turned with both losing to Lionel and Gary (7:5). In the doubles Galena and Sally lost a closely fought battle to George and William (8:9) while Susan and Ray fell (5:10) to Lionel and Gary. ●

Some of the most enthusiastic imbibers were the nuns - eight fun-loving ladies gathered together by former Noosa Springs staffer Penelope Lena, who had travelled from throughout Queensland for the event. One even flew in from Sydney. Such was their level of concentration and, perhaps, the length of their stops at the food and wine marquees - that they took more than four hours to complete the nine holes. But nobody minded, and everybody declared Courses on Course to be another resounding cultural success. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Wade Carmichael powering in Brazil. Photo WSL.

WADE CARMICHAEL STRIKES A BLOW FOR THE COMMON MAN would expect the wheels to fall off for a power surfer with a rail game and not much going on above the lip. But when you're on a roll, things favour the brave, and suddenly we had wedgy sand-bottom barrels on offer, just made for hacks and gouges, and up against the best performance all-rounders in the world, Big Wadey shone, and he kept on shining until inevitably taken down in the final by the best of the best, future world champion Filipe Toledo. What I loved about Carmichael in Brazil was that he came alone, sat in the stands and psyched himself up, told the interviewers after every heat win that he was just stoked to be there and having some barrels, and he got on with the job. No nutritionist, therapist, coach, manager, wellness guru or stroppy dad. No BS. Just Big Wade getting the job done, and finishing at number five in the world. He might have more power and a little less flow, but Wade reminded me of no one more than the great Wayne Deane, another Everyman who could quietly whip butts wherever he competed, doing what he knew he did best, without compromise. And so now the tour is back in Bali after five years away, not just for one event but for one and a half, with Uluwatu providing the shark-free environment required to finish

I'm a bit slow out of the boxes sometimes, and I have to admit that Wade Carmichael snuck up on me this season. Who knew that the stocky bloke from Avoca with the bushranger beard, who even his publicists at the World Surf League say "looks more at home on a barstool than in the barrel", could really, really surf! Of course, if I'd been paying attention I might have noted that he won the Reef Pro at perfect Haleiwa in 2015 with a brilliant rail game, and might have qualified for the big tour right then. But things don't always fall into the lap for boofy blokes with no sponsors, and Wade had to work his butt off digging ditches to pay his way around the QS and finally make the cut last year at 25 years of age. In surf dog years, that's pretty old to suddenly be a someone, and to be honest, Wade Carmichael looked for all the world like a one-season time-server when he popped up at the Quik Pro season opener at Snapper Rocks. He didn't do much there, but he looked impressive at Bells until Michel Bourez took him out before the quarters, although not so much in the early rounds at Margaret River, where he didn't win a heat before the sharks called time. But clearly this bloke was building momentum going into Brazil, where you

the Margaret River Pro. Funny situation, this, with the Corona Pro at Keramas offering a powerful, barreling right for the first few heats of the day, followed by a sideshore ramp from mid-morning on. Carmichael's first round heat was at the end of the draw, when the big punters tend to shine, so it was not an ideal start for him, finishing last in the last heat of day one. As I write, it looks like there will be another good day at Keramas for the knockout round two, in which Carmichael has drawn South Africa's Michael February in the middle of the round. Two rookies with a power game - anything could happen, and will have by the time you read this. Following the Corona, the Margaret River Pro will conclude at Uluwatu, where I'd love to see Big Wade carving big Outside

Sometimes overshadowed by the guitar mastery of his brother, Tommy, Phil Emmanuel was nonetheless one of our finest guitarists of the last half century. A regular player here on the Coast, and a sometime resident, Phil passed away after an asthma attack at Parkes, NSW, in late May, at just 65. I hadn't heard Phil play in quite a while when great mate Timmy Gaze got in touch last Christmas and invited us to join him at Brisbane venue The Triffid, where the "Legends of Australian Rock Guitar" would perform individually and en masse. Wow, what a night that was! In addition to Tim and Phil, Kevin Borich was on fire on guitar, and Jonny Carson tied it all together with some magic drumming. It was a gig for the ages, and I am so glad I was there to witness Phil at his best. Another Aussie rock legend bites the dust too soon. ●

Corner, but alas and alack, he's already bowed out of that one. So Keramas will be an important result, as far as momentum is concerned. The heat is off, he's almost certainly requalified, but he may never repeat this form, this confidence, in his career, so go hard, Wade Carmichael!

COAST SCHOOLS SHOWCASE SAILING The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club was the host venue for the sailing of the Sunshine Coast Inter-Schools regatta last week. Now in its 20th year, thanks to the continuing support of Stratogen Accountants, this regatta is a showcase for schools sailing talent across the coast and a fantastic opportunity for these young sailors to sail as a team whilst representing their school. There was a total of 22 teams from 9 schools racing in primary and Secondary school divisions. Sailors and race officials were challenged by the light winds of the weekend but managed to complete a total of 15 races. In the Primary Division the overall winner was Mathew Flinders Anglican College - Marcel Klatsmanyi and Kristen Pugh, second was Good Shepherd Lutheran College - Lachlan Sinclair, Harry Cumner and Zach May, and third place went to St Andrews Anglican College - Gabe Taubenschalg and Will Piva. The Secondary division winner was Mathew Flinders Anglican College - James Beveridge and Eloise Jessett, second Sunshine Coast Grammar - Mathew Green and Sean Saunders, and third Good Shepherd Lutheran College - Rylie Sinclair and Jake Bray. ●

JUNIOR TIGERS ON THE PROWL NOOSA BLUE UNDER 10 REPORT Noosa Blue vs Coolum Beach White, an amazing game played in wet conditions, although the ground was wet the game flowed really well with some great passages of play created by our team moving the ball fast through the midfield and direct to our forwards with plenty of scoring opportunities, some awesome team play was displayed with all 14 players having an impact on the game, with some stand out players, Jesse Bamford kicking 5 goals, Edward Smith was a key play maker displaying a great work rate and scored 2 goals, Cooper Mackay playing a key role in the forward pocket with 3 goals, Best on Ground Performance went to Nelson Evans playing a huge part in the first half up forward setting up and creating play which ended in 6 or more goals also scoring a few himself, his work rate in the midfield both offensive and defensive was commendable, it was great footy to watch, awesome game Noosa Blue, I’m so proud as a coach that you are working so well as a team so early in the season, Up there Noosa!

NOOSA PINK U13 GIRLS After a stormy and lightning fuelled Friday night saw our under 15 and 17 girls games abandoned, it was up to our Noosa pink under 13 girls to fly the flag for the tigers and that’s exactly what they did. The young Noosa girls romped home to defeat glasshouse/nth shore to the tune of 89 points at Landsborough. The Tigers skill level was far superior to that of their

opponent’s with Poppy Tindal, Kyiah Hides and Kate Roberts standouts. Chloe Murray and Larissa Tylum both booted three goals for the victors with a special mention to Chloe Pitts who umpired her first AFL game and did a first up effort she should be very proud of. NOOSA RED UNDER 14 REPORT Despite a gallant effort in tough conditions at Landsborough, Noosa Red fell agonisingly short of an upset win, going down to Hinterland Glasshouse by just 4 points on Sunday. The boys lined up in sunshine but just as the ball was about to be bounced the heavens opened up and the rain was relentless for the entire game. This resulted in a scrappy but tough, close game where the margin was tight all day. Noosa made the most of their opportunities and held a narrow 3 point lead at 3 quarter time. Unfortunately the Lions kicked the only goal of the last quarter to win 3.5.23 to Noosa Red 3.1.19. The backline was courageous all day and were led by Taj Butterworth at centre half back. Also terrific in the backline were Beau McWaters and Nooki Meskanen Hopkins. Up forward Jaxon Membrey snagged a couple of goals and Tom Smith made a great contribution in tough conditions for forwards. UNDER 10S NOOSA RED REPORT In slippery conditions the team played very well against a determined Pomona team It was great to see Teleah kick her first goal, all players were awesome Awards went to Darcy and Zion. ●

last quarter saw the Tigers prevail and remain on top of the Hart Sport Division 1 Ladder. Local star Jai Fitzpatrick showed his array of skill with a best on ground display. The midfielder picked up a cool 34 possessions and set up many of the tigers scoring opportunities throughout the day. Maffra locals Lambourn and Stevens were outstanding across the back half with their cool decision making and exquisite foot skills in the conditions. Ruckman Connor McDonald continued his dominance in the air and around the ground to continue what has been an outstanding season thus far for the youngster. With representative coach Danny craven watching on I wouldn’t be surprised if McDonald gets a call up for representative duties alongside several other tigers. Corey Boardman showed his footy smarts in a busy work manlike performance whilst recruit Jayden Holt was also a terrific contributor. Veteran Danny ’show me the candy’ O’Brien bagged 3 goals in a lively forward performance whilst the ever reliable Kent Delbridge also kicked 3 in another multiple goal scoring effort. Overall a very solid and commanding win as they travel down the Bruce Highway this Saturday to meet the once mighty Mayne at Everton park. Best of luck to all tiger outfits competing the weekend! FIGHTERS MAKE IMPRESSION BY RON LANE From Cooroy to Mackay is a long way to drive to take part in a boxing tournament. However for six members plus coach and support group of the Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy-- it was definitely worth it. The occasion was the North Queensland Games and the boxing tournament was just one of the many sports that were contested over the two day duration. "This was the first time in twenty years," said Coach Mark Evans, "that our sport came under the auspices of Boxing Queensland; and it was a great event well organized and well run." At the completion the results for the Impact team were to say the least impressive. With a team of six fighters they came home with a total of 10 gold medals. The four extra medals came about as a result of four fighters going up a division on the second day thus giving them two fights instead of one. "The opportunity was there for the extra fight in the higher division and with it all being strictly supervised the chance to gain that extra experience was good-- and the four wins made it even better. With teams from Victoria, West Australia and the Northern Territory in the draw the standard of boxing was good." said Coach Evans. The Games which covered 30 sports and catered for an approximately 3,900 competitors are for some reason relatively unheralded in southern regions. For our local team a highlight was the performance of 13 yr. old Paige Robinson. This young lady now has a total of 5 fights for 5 wins. Contesting her first bout in the

BYRNES TRIUMPHS Cohen and Paige Robinson. 40kg division she scored an impressive win then moved up a division to fight at 42kg and again got the nod from the judges. Next week along with her coach she flies to Perth for an Interstate clash in the 44kg division against the reigning state champion. State officials are now starting to take note of this young fighter; but like all talented athletes the road to success has not been easy. "Not only does train in the gym ten times a week but she also finds the time to fit in a game of touch football. I tell you this kid is all go," said her coach. With a total of some 30 juniors training at the Impact Academy each night, plus seniors, the cost of transportation and accommodation

for tournaments is becoming an increasing problem. "With this in mind we are starting to look at a fund raising drive with the end goal being the possible purchase of a twelve seater bus; a massive step for us, but something that we have to consider. There are two avenues for us to explore a fund drive and/or a sponsorship deal,"said Coach Evans. With an increasing number of Impact Academy fighters not only making state and national teams but also fighting on the International level (Ireland, Poland, India and the Bahamas) and coming home with medals, the possibility of a major sponsorship for such a successful club should be considered. ●

Noosa Athletics Rhonda Byrnes has returned from the Melanesian Championships in Vanuatu with a Gold Medal in the Women's 100m hurdles. This continues a Noosa tradition of athletes representing Australia in the Pacific Championships. "Competing overseas has given me valuable experience in adjusting to differences in climate and track conditions while still putting together a good race" said the 20-year-old hurdles specialist who also competed at the Commonwealth Games trials earlier in the year. For Noosa Head Coach Mick Hooper, the Pacific regional competitions are an important stepping stone towards further international representation. Fellow hurdler Samantha Johnson competed at the Oceania Championships in 2015 and is now heading to the prestigious World U20 Championships in Finland in July along with training partner Zane Branco. ●

WEATHER KEPT ANGLERS IN CLOSE TO HOME ON THE WATER With the weather turning a bit average over last weekend most anglers kept to the river. Flathead are in great numbers in the river with the channels around the river mouth being the most productive. Soft plastics paddle tails and vibes have been working well in the deeper channels. Baits of small pilchard and prawns have also claimed some good fish. The whiting fishing has been very consistent this week. The top of the tide and the first hours of the run out have been the prime times with Gympie Terrace, down at the river mouth, the Dog Beach and Frying Pan all fishing well. A lot of whiting have been caught on surface lures this week with surface walkers claiming some quality fish. Live worms, freshly pumped yabbies and peeled prawns have also been the go to bait for catching a feed. Bream have also been caught in good numbers, the river mouth and the deeper channels in the lower section of the river on the top of tide has fished well. Very lightly weighted baits fished in a well maintained burley trail has claimed the majority of fish. Tailor and some nice sized trevally were also caught around Woods Bays with the larger fish taken around dawn and dusk. The current line and around the moored boats is also a place to target these fish. For those throwing plastics try the deeper sections of the river like in front of Coast Guard, around the Noosa Sound and the Tewantin stretch of the river. On the offshore scene: with the wind and swell up last weekend most anglers noosatoday.com.au

kept pretty close to shore. Sunshine reef is producing great numbers of pearl perch, sweet lip, tusk fish, and Cobia. Snapper are around but mainly feeding in the low light periods in morning and afternoons. Jew Sholes has had a good run of better sized Mac tuna, long tail tuna, mackerel as well as good reef species this week with anglers having most of their success on floating whole pilchards, and a wide range of soft plastics fished through a good burley trail. Reports from Barwon Banks were from before the weather turned, but it was fishing well for cobia, tusk fish, Moses perch and Pearlies, while The Hards has producing Snapper, Tusk fish, a few red emperor, pearl perch, hussar, cobia and Mori cod. For those that are chasing the pelagic's, numbers are starting to drop but quality and size has improved with some bigger fish taken over the past couple of weeks. There is still plenty of bait schools around for them to feed on so make sure you have a rod rigged and ready to cast. On the beach: Sunshine beach has been fishing well for dart and bream using prawns, pippies and live sand worms. Fishing early morning and late afternoon, and using burley have been the best methods this week for catching larger numbers of fish. At Noosa North Shore anglers using metal slugs as well as whole ganged pilchards have landed some nice flathead and quality tailor, those fishing with fresh pippies and sand worm have also had some quality whiting and dart catches. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
