Jill paves the way By Casey Neill “This lady’s a force of nature.” And with that introduction, Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll announced Jill Walsh as the joint winner of the Woman Manufacturer of the Year. It was a new Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards honour, presented at a Crown Palladium event on Monday 28 May. Ms Walsh, from Dandenong South’s ActcoPickering Metal Industries, accepted the award alongside Vanessa Kearney from Viva Energy. “I just felt this amazing sense of pride, really,” she told the Journal the following day. “It’s been a long commitment to manufacturing, nearly 20 years.” During that time she’s been a staunch advocate for others in the industry. She’s served the Premier’s Jobs and Investment Panel, Southern Melbourne Regional Development Australia (RDA) committee, Committee for Dandenong and the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA). Ms Walsh even ran for a seat on Greater Dandenong Council in a bid to be a voice for manufacturers in local government. “I believe that manufacturing and engineering is integral to the future of this state and our country,” she said. “We need to retain the ability to build things, whether they’re trains or ships or planes or whatever. “I believe that manufacturing is the true wealth-creator in our society.” It all started when Ms Walsh was a 17-yearold receptionist. “I thought ‘I know I could do more than what I’m doing and the way to get there is education’,” she said. “I went back to night school to do Years 11 and 12 and eventually accounting.” She entered the manufacturing fold by buying “a small business that would only be five days a week”. “The joke was on us there,” she laughed. “We originally had about eight staff. We had to growth the business. “We looked around for a merger partner. I made one phone call to Andrew Pickering. “We had lunch about a week later and less than two months later we were merged.” Today she splits her time between HR directing and monitoring the manufacturing landscape.

Jill Walsh after receiving her award. 181397 Channel Nine newsreader Alicia Loxley, the awards night’s MC, described Ms Walsh as “a real trailblazer”. She hosted an on-stage fireside chat with several award winners, during which Ms Walsh told the audience that entering a then-male dominated industry had been daunting. “Because so often I was the only woman in

the room,” she said. “I was always waiting to be asked to make coffee, initially.” Ms Walsh said perseverance, resilience and passion were her keys to success. “I believe in what I do,” she said. Mr Carroll said manufacturing had a bright future.

“Victoria’s manufacturing industry is powering ahead and it is people like Vanessa Kearney, Jill Walsh and (Young Manufacturer of the Year) Vanessa Katsanevakis who are helping lead the way,” he said. See page 10 for more Greater Dandenong award-winners.

$1m goes up in smokes By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Malaysian national on a tourist visa has been jailed over possessing more than two million illegally-imported cigarettes at a Dandenong warehouse. Yunn Fang, 23, had pleaded guilty and was sentenced for possessing tobacco products with the intent of defrauding federal revenue at the County Court of Victoria on 31 May. He had been arrested at a Bryants Road warehouse where he was unpacking 2,016,000 illegally-imported cigarettes in blue plastic tubs from a shipping container on 10 August 2017. The value of evaded excise duty and GST

was a “very considerable” $1.244 million, Judge Frances Hogan said. There was no evidence Fang was involved in the importation but played an “essential role” in what appeared to be a “well-organised” and “professional” enterprise, Judge Hogan said. Fang had arrived in Australia at Gold Coast airport on a five-day tourist visa on 21 July. He lied to customs officers that he was attending Queensland theme parks and would not be travelling interstate. That day, he booked a flight to Melbourne for 23 July. Throughout his trip, he made phone calls to numbers with known links to illegal tobacco

importation, including a commercial site in Campbellfield. He was picked up from Avalon Airport in a car with NSW number plates. He used his own passport and a false Victorian address to set up a bank account. He also used his own name to hire a car, showing a lack of sophistication, Judge Hogan noted. On 3 August, Fang hired accommodation at Comfort Inn, Dandenong. At the Bryants Road warehouse, a truck arrived with the consigned shipping container. The waiting Fang took delivery using a “fake” signature.

When arrested at the site that day, he told police that he’d come to Melbourne to find a job. He claimed that in Australia, he’d met a Malaysian person who offered him $1000 to unload the Dandenong shipping container, he told police. Judge Hogan said the offence was difficult to detect, requiring “a great deal of time, diligence and resources” for investigation, she said. It undermined Federal Parliament’s efforts to discourage tobacco use with increased duties. Fang was jailed for two years from the day of sentence.

Bridge over deadly junction nearly there "The removal of this dangerous level crossing is well overdue," Ms Williams said. She said the new rail bridge design would ensure enough space remained for both a potential future rail duplication above and road duplication beneath. "It's exciting to see that the Abbotts Road level crossing removal project is in full swing and the project team will continue to update the community as it progresses," she said. Overnight road closures allowed the project team to safely install the first beam, minimising disruption to local traffic and allowing trains to continue running along the Cranbourne line. The temporary road closures also allowed preparations for future beam installations on either side of the road, with a gantry

crane helping to lift the beams into place on top of concrete columns. The new rail bridge design is the same Australian-first method being used on several level crossing removal projects across the state. In total, 30 L-shaped concrete segments up to 31 metres long will be transported overnight to the Abbotts Road site. A crane will lift them into place and they'll be joined together in pairs to form the U-trough viaducts that trains will eventually run inside. Ms Williams said the boom gates would be gone later this year. For disruption information, visit bigbuild. vic.gov.au.

Police issue car theft warning Greater Dandenong Police have issued a warning following a "significant rise" in thefts from cars. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said people should park their car in a driveway or garage whenever possible. He urged people to remove their wallet, keys and other valuables from their vehicles. Det Sen Const Lavars said people should cancel their credit cards as soon as they realise their wallet has been stolen. 12388226-CG22-18

A deadly Dandenong South level crossing is a step closer to being removed. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited the site on Friday 1 June to inspect the first concrete U-trough beam installed over Abbotts Road. Fourteen more will follow to form the new single-track rail bridge to separate the Cranbourne rail line from the road. "This unique rail bridge design will ensure that Abbotts Road remains open permanently, maintaining an important connection to the busy Dandenong South industrial precinct," Ms Williams said. About 22,000 vehicles use the road each day. Two serious collisions between a train and a vehicle resulted in fatalities in recent years one in 2008 and another in 2012.

A bomb hoax prompted a full evacuation at Dandenong Primary. Acting Inspector Tim Hardiman said police were called to the Foster Street school at 2.22pm on Tuesday 29 May. He said the school had received a phone call "relating to the possibility of a bomb" a short time earlier. "Police take all these reports extremely seriously," he said. Act Insp Hardiman said the school implemented Education Department procedures and evacuated students and staff to a neighbouring oval. "The first process is to remove everybody from the immediate area," he said. "Then police move in and conduct a thorough search." He said Dandenong officers thoroughly searched the school under the watch of a sergeant and cleared the scene about 4.30pm. "It was deemed to be a hoax," he said. "No one's going to take risks with kids. "We take all of them really seriously until we can determine one way or the other." A post on the Dandenong Primary School Facebook page said "the safety of our students is our number one priority and so we enacted our evacuation procedures". "Students and staff responded exactly as we have practiced earlier this year, in a calm and orderly fashion," it said. "Well done to all children and staff involved." Act Insp Hardiman said school resumed as normal on Wednesday. "This is an ongoing investigation," he said. He appealed for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Premier Wood Machining Services was concerned about its energy costs and wanted to reduce its energy use before renegotiating supply contracts later this year. The business has expansion plans and recognised that exploring renewable energy options was important, as environmental credentials had significant value to timber industry customers. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the business identified potential savings of up to $11,700 a year through an energy assessment. "Energy assessments are a great opportunity for businesses to improve their productivity, reduce their operating costs," she said. Premier Wood Machining Services is now working with an experienced energy consultant to identify more potential energy efficiency improvements, review pricing tariffs, and find suitable renewable energy options. The grants are open to businesses spending more than $20,000 a year on energy. ‘Failures’ walking it out By Casey Neill Debbie Tryhorn and her daughter Elizabeth Nakalevu have both failed - and couldn't be more thankful. Both Dandenong women have tried to take their own lives - Debbie in 2015 and Lizzy on 2 April this year. Both women joined the 24-hour treadmill challenge at Anytime Fitness in Dandenong to support Suicide Prevention Australia. Debbie walked for the entire event, from 3pm on Friday 25 May to 3pm on Saturday 26 May. "I'm in an incredible amount of pain at the moment, but that pain is so small compared to the pain you would feel if you lost a loved one," she told the Journal on Monday 28 May. "I made a decision to walk the 24 hours on a treadmill to represent what anyone would do to save a loved one. "I really wanted to create a movement." Debbie and Lizzy shared their journey through live videos on Facebook and connected with people from around the world. "I never, ever believed we could reach as many people as we did," Debbie said. Before they even got on the treadmills, a boy reached out to Lizzy via Facebook and told her she'd helped him to turn a corner. "My daughter, her ultimate goal was to save a life," she said. Debbie and Lizzy wore T-shirts with "I failed ... " printed on the front and " ... thankfully" on the back. They were among eight participants who raised $2332.30. Club supervisor Amy Williams said many others jumped on the treadmills in support during the day. "We had Debbie and Ainslie (Wyllie) do the whole 24 hours," she said. "Lizzy was our ambassador. "We would love to shout out to the crew from

Debbie Tryhorn, Amy Williams, Ainslie Wyllie, Sai Kwok Yeung and Elizabeth Nakalevu. 180077 Dandenong CFA who turned up in their truck and ended up walking as well." Debbie said there were no words to describe the moment she heard about Lizzy's suicide attempt. "I realised my purpose in life was to really create something for other people," she said. She said they now looked back on that moment "almost in gratitude". "It's this massive opportunity, we can really change the world for other people as a team,"

she said. "It's almost become our mission in life to create this awareness." Two years ago, Lizzy was the victim of a violent break-in at her then-home in Narre Warren. She said two men smashed her door down, threatened her with a shotgun and robbed her. "It was very scary to be part of that," she said. "We went through court. We did a lot of statements.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "That was something that I struggled with a lot. "It impacted my life and my relationship with a lot of people." A friend's suicide in November and other negative thoughts piled on top of her. She's now seeking help through youth counselling service headspace. 50 years ago 6 June 1968 Skilton 'will play with the Redlegs' Baring last minute hitches, dynamic rover Bob Skilton will don a Dandenong Guernsey next season. Skilton has received several tempting offers - including overtures from interstate - should he decide to leave South. But I'll bet my last dollar to Dandenong's 1967 VFA pennant flag that the dual Brownlow Medallist will be with Morrow and company in 1969. I predicted this would be the case in The Journal last Thursday and since then Skilton himself has indicated that so far the Dandenong offer surpasses anything he has yet

considered. No Dandenong official has been involved in any approach to Skilton and I'm led to believe that no organised moves have been made by the all-powerful Dandtonians. I believe an announcement is imminent on Skilton's future - and that the release will be made immediately after a joint Redleg committee-Dandenong conference with Skilton.

20 years ago 8 June 1998 Housing funds Funds for housing to replace the Peace Court public housing estate were announced last week by the State Liberal MP for Berwick Mr Robert Dean and the State Minister for Housing Mrs Henderson. The $336,000 will be used to build six older persons units in Wattle Drive, Doveton.

3 June 2013 Dandenong revitalised but community groups 'miss out' Some of Dandenong's key community groups are being cramped in "antiquated" and "inadequate" buildings, a Greater Dandenong councillor says. Cr Matthew Kirwan said new lodgings must be found for Dandenong's child and maternal health service, neighbourhood house and historical society. He described the health service, with its two clinics and toy library crammed in a semidetached 1940s building in Clow Street, as 'providing a great service in an antiquated set up'. "Dandenong has been revitalised in so many ways," he said. "We're developing it as a regional centre but for people living in Dandenong, the community services aren't keeping up."

Dandenong’s old church The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

BACK JACK JOHNSON

In 1959, when the current St Mary's Catholic Church in Dandenong was built on the site of the tennis courts, the old church became a hall. When the credit union was formed, its first office would be built on the grass patch behind the old altar wall. With the old church becoming a public hall, toilets had to be built alongside the sacristy wall. There were a group of young people who ran Saturday night dances and entertainment in the hall.

I think they called themselves the 5-4 Club. I remember one night when I was helping a mate as a door attendant and crowdcontroller; they had the Bee Gees there and packed almost a thousand teenagers into the old church. The third and current Catholic Church of Dandenong, with its large steel cross standing not far from where we had trouble with the strange turnstile gate, was entered from Foster Street via a semi-circular driveway.

You walked up six marble steps to a forecourt with brick planter boxes each side. Some years later when the widening of Foster Street was proposed the church underwent major alterations. The entrance was moved to the original altar position at the Benga end of the church and a new altar was constructed on the McCrae Street side. There is now a car park and entrance from Langhorne Street on the site of the old presbytery where the old stables and man's hut stood. A new brick fence with wrought iron gates now stands where the old wooden gates and fence in McCrae Street were. Many times did we come through these gates on our way to the church or the back door of the presbytery. We stood inside the gates near the stables and loft and counted the presbytery's even or-

nate chimneys. On the other side of the yard opposite the stables and loft were three sheds made of split palings. These sheds served the tennis courts before the new pavilion was built. It was in the area of these sheds that the two Hicks sisters, who went to St Mary's School with us, left their horses, when they rode to school from a farm out near McPhee's Road on Stud Road. Many times we walked from the gates between the corner of the tennis courts and the high wooden fence around the un-sewered brick toilets, all screened by a high cypress hedge. Today, facing Foster Street, on the land where our childhood church stood, is the modern St Mary's parish centre and residence.

Body count stacks up By Casey Neill A Dandenong funeral home got the green light to triple the number of bodies it stores. Greater Dandenong Councillor Tim Dark was the only one to speak in opposition to the application for 2A Carmen Street at the Monday 28 May council meeting. The decision amends an existing permit issued in 2013 to "use of the land for the temporary storage of deceased persons". It will allow Templeton Family Funerals to store 12 deceased persons, up from four, and to increase its maximum storage time from 24 hours to five days. The funeral home can also amend its existing plans to include a new lounge/arrangement room and mortuary/embalming room. Cr Dark said his opposition was "because of the area in which the application is positioned". He said it was directly across the road from residential properties and the intended use was "well and truly too much" for the area. "I think this is in the wrong location," he said. The council received two objections to the application, relating to a significant increase of stored bodies; traffic and congestion; waste vehicle noise; and a decrease in property value. The officers' report said the key issue in addressing the application was the appropriateness of allowing the embalming of bodies, the increase in the total number of stored deceased and the time allowed in which the deceased must be transferred offsite.

It said officers considered the proposed amendments reasonable, "in that the additional use for the preparation of bodies would not result in any adverse amenity impacts to the site or surrounding land, and is not a significant departure from the intent of the original permit granted". "In addition, the increase in capacity and holding time is considered reasonable, as all necessary preparation works and storage would be undertaken internally to the building, thus not visible to the street," the report said. "The applicant has indicated that the amendments would not result in a change of staff numbers or hours of operation, and as such, there would be no change in the current car parking considerations. "The existing building has roller shutter access to ensure loading and unloading be undertaken internally, so as to not impact the amenity of the surrounding area." Cr Matthew Kirwan said the site was "very near" to Princes Highway in light industrial and commercial precinct. "The reserve nearby creates a lot more traffic than this small business will," he said. "I don't believe it will have an overly adverse impact at all." On 14 May, councillors approved a permit for the Taha Humanity Association of Victoria to use its 9-11 Patrona Street site for embalming. They agreed on a three-metre high fence to shield truck drivers at the neighbouring business from viewing dead bodies.

A life-sized Mahatma Gandhi could stand in Dandenong's Indian Cultural Precinct. Greater Dandenong Council is seeking public feedback on a Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria proposal to install a bronze statue of the pacifist opposite the Dandenong Railway Station. The survey will ask about support for the statue and whether there is support for monuments of other historical figures or icons to reinforce the precinct as the heart of Melbourne's Indian and subcontinent culture.

A tribute to one of India's most well-known and revered historical figures could include a series of plaques describing Gandhi's life and philosophy. In Australia, Canberra and Brisbane are already home to life-sized Gandhi statues. Artist Julian Clavijo recently painted a temporary mural of Gandhi on a former substation within the Indian Cultural Precinct. The survey closes on Thursday 7 June and can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ GandhiSurvey.

Apartment plan blocked By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong Council knocked back a four-storey apartment block - even though it met planning guidelines. At the council's Monday 28 May meeting, Councillor Angela Long moved to refuse the application for 58 Herbert Street, Dandenong. She said the 10-apartment block, would be "an overdevelopment of the site with excessive, bulky built form" and would not be keeping with the neighbourhood character. Cr Long said the site was not on any major roads, and the development would cause parking problems. "It is very close to the Dandenong Market," she said. "Parking at the moment is at a premium without the extra parking that this problem would create." Cr Matthew Kirwan said the south side of Herbert Street - where the number 58 was located - was zoned for growth and the north was general residential. "When there was a similar application to this a few months back, I said that I would support a three-storey apartment block in this residential street but not a four-storey one," he said. "Our local policy says the preferred height in the General Residential Zone is two storeys, and three storeys on the other side of the street leads to an acceptable graduation in height. "My views remain the same - four storeys is

excessive for the street." Cr Zaynoun Melhem raised concerns about the building overlooking a neighbouring childcare centre. Cr Sean O'Reilly said the proposal included an opaque treatment on windows facing the centre, and through car stackers met the parking requirements. "All the things that we've said in our planning policy that an application here should provide, it has provided," he said. "Do we really expect developers to tune into every council meeting to find out which direction planning policy is going in the City of Greater Dandenong? "This is policy on the run. "We can reject this application and devote a whole lot of council resources at VCAT and try to argue the case, which is a futile effort. "If we reject it here it will go to VCAT and it will be approved. "I think as a council we should be consistent with planning policy." Cr Tim Dark said: "This is a development that fits all the criteria." "We'll look like a bunch of idiots when it comes up to VCAT." There were five votes in favour and against the notice to refuse. Cr Jim Memeti used his casting vote as acting chair in Mayor Youhorn Chea's absence to pass the motion. The council received two objections from the public, relating to overshadowing, overdevelopment and street car parking.

Trained for the big win By Casey Neill Dandenong's Bombardier Transportation Australia took home a major manufacturing award. The train and tram manufacturer won the Transport Technologies nod at the annual Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards, held at the Crown Palladium on Monday 28 May. "The greatly anticipated Hall of Fame Awards are a highlight for the manufacturing industry every year, and Bombardier is extremely honoured to have received such a prestigious award," managing director Andrew Dudgeon said. "This recognition reflects our commitment to delivering the mobility solutions that Victoria needs and can be proud of, both today and into the future." Mr Dudgeon said the awards confirmed the strength of manufacturing in Australia. "This respected award is a testament to the local manufacturing of our trains and trams which transform mobility across Victoria's rail ecosystem," he said. Bombardier designs, engineers, manufactures and maintains Melbourne's Flexity EClass trams and VLocity trains for the regional rail network. Both projects have generated more than 500 direct jobs and supported more in the local supply-chain. Last December Bombardier, as part of the Rail Systems Alliance (RSA), won the contract to install a high-capacity rail control solution for the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project.

Chobani managing director Peter Meek.

Yogurt’s flipping success By Casey Neill Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll presents the Transport Technologies award to Bombardier managing director Andrew Dudgeon. In April, the Journal revealed that Bombardier signed a $77 million maintenance contract for the controls. The 10-year deal includes an option for five extra years. The Hall of Fame Awards were established in 2001 to recognise individuals and companies that embrace new technologies and manufacturing techniques, are export-focused and excel in business innovation. Victoria's manufacturing industry contributes $27.7 billion to the state's economy, with more than 13,000 businesses employing more than 286,000 people.

Chobani has been mixing things up in the yogurt world. The Dandenong South manufacturer took home the Growth Sector award in Food and Fibre category at the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards at Crown Palladium on Monday 28 May. Managing director Peter Meek said Chobani was honoured and thrilled. He said the company landed in Australia in 2011 through acquiring Bead Foods and its brand Gippsland Dairy. "Over a short amount of time, Chobani went from producing 25,000 cases a week to 26-27,000 cases a day," he said. "We've had remarkable growth in a short period of time." Mr Meek said that market research found Chobani was the number one yogurt brand in

the Australian grocery marketplace, with a 14.3 per cent share. "Our recent launch of the product innovation Chobani Flip was a huge success," he said. "It brought growth to the Australian yogurt category by breaking yogurt out of breakfast and bringing it into the snacking occasion." The product features flavoured Greek yogurt in one section of packaging, and crunchy mix-ins in another. "In the first three weeks of launch, $2.5 million worth of product was sold in Coles and Woolworths," Mr Meek said. "Chobani's on-the-go pouch packaging was created and launched in Australia in 2013. "We're excited about the future for Chobani and how we can grow the category further with more innovations on the horizon in both product development and manufacturing capabilities and technologies."

Following our appeal for the Australian Animal Protection Society last week, the Keysborough shelter has rehomed all of its dogs ahead of its move. The Keysborough animal shelter still needs to find homes for about 50 cats before it leaves its Homeleigh Road site on Wednesday 20 June. Call 9798 8415 or email president@aaps. org.au to help.

It'll be a while yet before Greater Dandenong audiences can watch the locally-shot film that won big at Cannes. The council explained that due to rules surrounding the short film festival circuit, it wasn't yet able to screen All These Creatures. It collaborated with filmmaker Charles Williams to produces the Palme d'Or-winning short film. Mr Williams is entering the movie in sev-

eral festivals. The council will look at a public screening once that has run its course.

Roundabout near-miss An under-the-weather Greater Dandenong Councillor Tim Dark had a near-miss in Springvale. He told the Monday 28 May council meeting that he was crossing the road to access Lim's Pharmacy when a car almost collected him. "It is quite concerning," he said. "If someone could miss a person as big as me ... " Cr Dark asked if the council could look at installing a zebra crossing at the intersection. Engineering services director Julie Reid said she'd previously looked into that option, and traffic engineers did not recommend a pedestrian crossing at a roundabout. "The roundabout means traffic has the priority in that particular location," she said.

Fake news on Thomas Greater Dandenong Councillor Tim Dark asked the Monday 28 May council meeting whether the municipality would be taking Thomas the Tank Engine books off its library shelves. He referred to a story slamming political correctness that took off on social media in recent weeks. Community services director Martin Fidler said this was "fake news". "Thomas the Tank Engine is one of my favourites," he said. "I wouldn't like to see him removed."

Fire bill tops $12 million Preventable house fires are on the rise in the Dandenong area. The CFA’s latest statistics showed there were 457 preventable house fires in district eight last year, which also includes Springvale, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Mornington, Phillip Island and Wonthaggi. This was a two per cent increase on the previous year. These fires caused $12.7 million in damage, the state’s highest district dollar figure. Most preventable fires started in the kitchen, followed by bedrooms, lounge rooms, the roof or ceiling, and the laundry. Cooking was the cause of 34 per cent of the preventable house fires, or 131 incidents. Electrical was the next most common cause, accounting for 32 per cent, followed by heating at 13 per cent. District eight acting operations manager Andrew Turner said working smoke alarms saved lives. “This is clearly demonstrated through the fact

that despite more than 450 preventable house fires and significant property loss in our district, there were no deaths as a result of preventable fires in 2017,” he said. “Our message is clear. “Check your smoke alarm’s battery, and if your smoke alarm is aged 10 years or more the whole unit should be changed.” The CFA’s acting chief officer, Garry Cook, said the best way to stop a fire was to teach a person how to be safe in the home and stop a fire before it even began. “This includes reaching out to our multicultural communities, making sure regardless of whether you speak English or not you are safe around fires,” he said. “Whether we are educating people about not drying clothes too close to the heater, never leaving cooking unattended, or keeping lighters away from children, it is all part of our ultimate goal of protecting life and property.”

Local action on drugs

Two new drug action teams are heading for the South-East. The Federal Government and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) announced the Local Drug Action Teams (LDATs) would receive $10,000 each and work to prevent alcohol and other drug harms at a grass-roots level. "This is a fantastic opportunity for community partnerships to use local knowledge and build evidence-informed initiatives to prevent alcohol and other drug related-harms in their communities," ADF CEO Dr Erin Lalor said.

Afri-Aus Care Incorporated and City of Casey are the lead organisations for the South-East LDATs. "The LDAT program recognises that all local areas are different and that community-led initiatives are critical when it comes to preventing harms caused by alcohol and other drugs, including crystal methamphetamine," she said. LDAT is part of the Federal Government's $298 million, four-year investment under the National Ice Action Strategy.

Marie began her real estate career working at Nicholls Gledhill Real Estate in Caulfield South in 1970. Marie then took a break from the industry to concentrate on family life. In the early 1990s the directors of Nicholls Gledhill asked Marie if she would help out for a while at the Endeavour Hills office. Dandenong’s Harmony Square hosted a welcome to country, smoking ceremony and didgeridoo performance to mark Reconciliation Week. The Tuesday 29 May event also included an unveiling of new Aboriginal artwork in the Greater Dandenong Council chambers. The painting appears on the council’s Reconciliation Action Plan. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs from Sunday 27 May to Sunday 3 June. The theme for this year’s week is Don’t Keep History A Mystery: Learn. Share. Grow. It encourages people to learn more about Australian history hidden just beneath the surface. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. NRW started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993, the International Year of the World’s Indigenous People. In 1996, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first National Reconciliation Week. In 2000, Reconciliation Australia was established to provide national leadership on reconciliation. Dandenong is home to about 500 Indigenous Australians and, as the base of the Dandenong and District Aboriginal Co-operative and the Bunerong Health Services, serves a 2000-strong Indigenous community across the South-East.

Fire lessons for kinder kids Keysborough Fire Brigade passed on some valuable fire safety lessons to Springvale South kinder kids. The CFA crew visited Darren Reserve Kindergarten on Tuesday 22 May, during National Volunteer Week. The children got to check out a fire truck, complete with flashing lights, and use a fire extinguisher.

We’re helping businesses grow. jobs.gov.au In 2017, over 400,000 new jobs were created – that’s more than 1100 a day. So if you’re a small to medium business owner who’s wondering about the next step or has changing business needs, there are Government initiatives and incentives to help you hire staff. The Government is offering: • •

Programs to help you hire or train staff Financial incentives up to $10,000 to employ eligible staff

Would a four-storey apartment block be appropriate for Herbert Street? Melissa Howell Now they need to do that in all suburbs of City of Greater Dandenong. Keysborough South is ridiculous. They probably allow the developer to do it on old-school sites and behind Resurrection PS. Glad they had some common sense. Robyn J Westbury No, I live near Herbert Street and parking is a nightmare now, it's time to step back on putting lots of apartment blocks unless the parking issue and traffic flow is sorted out. Tony Cosentino Thank goodness...perhaps the council is learning from the aesthetic atrocities the council town planning department has allowed to be built in Dandenong. Eyesores, cheap construction and a blight on the landscape and character of the suburb. It's all about developer maximisation of profit. Single-use plastic bags will be gone from supermarkets a month from now. What do you think of the ban? Are you prepared? Sheryl Dyke It’s good but I don’t think it’s the answer as the rubbish bin liners are also made of plastic and will be disposed in tip waste. Wayne Bishop We should have the choice. Even paying five cents for each during a Coles or other supermarket shop would be fine with me. There are a lot of other industries that have plenty of plastic waste, don’t blame everything on the consumers. Gaye Guest Fantastic ... can’t wait. Just wish singleuse fruit bags would be banned as well. The thicker plastic bags aren’t the answer either and will be harder to recycle. We need shoppers to take their own tote bags and paper bags and recycled cardboard boxes need to be reintroduced. People need to wrap their rubbish in newspaper if they must wrap it in something. Peter Guild Where I live, single-use plastic bags can be recycled - there are four councils in Melbourne which do this. I really do not see the reusable bags as the solution they are still plastic and made from petroleum products. Tracy Knowles I’m hoarding as many as I can. We use them for so many things! Rhonda Jarrett I haven’t used plastic bags in supermarkets or department stores for at least 20 years. I don’t know why it has taken so long. Rod Jewell I say bring back the old fashioned paper bags. Mark Dalton We need to bring back paper sacks, but add paper handles like some stores use already.

with Chris Keys, Dandenong and District Historical Society president

Chris Keys at a book launch to celebrate Dandenong Market's 150th anniversary in 2016. 159054 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS invite to a dinner party? Jesus Christ, Mohammad, Nelson Mandela, Emmeline Pankhurst, Germaine Greer, and my Grandmother Ivy Keys.

1

Closing doors and windows and keeping them air tight will lock in any heat. Use a towel or similar to block any noticeable leaks. Weather stripping could also keep the cold out. Heavy curtains can block drafts, but open them when the sun is shining to let heat in.

2

Closing off any unused rooms reduces air circulation and therefore reduces heat loss, and putting down a rug helps to prevent heat loss through the floor.

3

Cooking a meal in the oven or on the stove can help the chef keep warm, dry out the air and heat the kitchen. After cooking, open the door to let some heat into the house. Limit cooking that gives off steam. Water vapour absorbs more heat than dry air, so humid air feels colder in winter than dry air.

What is something people don't know about you? I was the tallest pupil at Dandenong North School. As a went into high school I was expected to do well at netball, high jump and all sports that lend themselves to height being an advantage. I did have the height (and hated it) but I was just no good at these sports. I struggled with being tall and skinny for many years. Now I love my height as I can reach things on the supermarket top shelf. What was your most memorable moment? I would say graduation day at Monash University when I received my Bachelor of Business. I had studied part time for six years and worked full time in a management role. It was hard, disciplined work going to lectures after work, giving up weekends to study. What would your last meal be? Gee that is hard as I love all food. However my Mum's roast lamb with crunchy potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and Dutch carrots followed by queen pudding would be hard to beat. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? Peace in the Middle East. What is your favourite television show? At the moment my favourite is Shetland. The scenery is so beautiful, you get a feel of the lifestyle of an Islander, and the lead has a wonderful smile. Why is it important to preserve a community's history? A town or city that does not preserve its history will never be a community. It is only looking at our past and understanding how the place you live in was made that you can become a community. What six guests, dead or alive, would you

ENTERTAINMENT

Josh gets ready to rock it By Casey Neill A Noble Park performer will rock out in a musical with a difference. Joshua Aiello will take to the Bunjil Place Theatre stage as an ensemble member in the Windmill Theatre Company production of We Will Rock You. “It’s more of a rock concert with a story line than a classic musical theatre show,” he said. “It’s going to be a great spectacle visually and musically.” Ben Elton wrote the futuristic story with inspiration from classic Queen tracks, including We Are the Champions, I Want It All, Another One Bites the Dust and Bohemian Rhapsody. Mr Aiello, 24, said this show was a way for him to “get back into the swing of things”. “It had been a really long time since I had been on the stage as a performer,” he said. “My life for the last few years has been spent as the audio operator of the shows as my paid job, and it was killing me always seeing others performing. “Then last year I had my year of booking auditions and cancelling them last minute, or getting the call back and pretty much securing the role and then withdrawing out of fear and anxiety.” Mr Aiello has been involved in community theatre on and off for a few years. “Most of my time was spent working on the shows as a tech, rather than an actor,” he said. “I have instead been pursuing my love for screen acting and my own song writing endeavours. “I had been involved in a few commercials and had a small part on Neighbours at one point. “I am hoping that one day I’ll be able to be

Councils support Team 11 By Nick Creely It's now a year since the Team 11 pitch materialised at a 1 June launch event in the heart of Greater Dandenong. The south-east of Victoria has united as one behind the bid to push for an A-League and W-League admission into the national competition, with 12 local councils now pledging support for the bid. On Friday 1 June, the three councils driving the bid - the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia - have re-committed to the cause by re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that kick-started the process 12 months ago. However, those MoUs have been bolstered by Letters of Supports from surrounding councils including: Frankston City, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Knox City, City of Monash, Baw Baw Shire, Bass Coast Shire, South Gippsland Shire, Latrobe C ity and Wellington Shire. These letters were included in Team 11's Expression of Interest document submitted to Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Deloitte last week. The Letters of Support are indicative of the widespread interest in Team 11's bid in the south-east of Victoria. City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the re-signing of the MoU was important in the commitment to bringing the Team 11 bid to life. "The A-League, W-League and Youth Team bid is progressing very well," he said. "The three councils are working very hard together. We committed to this 12 months ago but have re-signed this MoU to make sure that we are all working together to bring a club to the south-east." This sentiment was echoed by City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, who believes it is a significant moment for the region and the strength of the bid. "The re-signing of the MOU is a real line in the sand moment for Team 11's bid," Ablett said. "Enormous amounts of work have been done over recent months to position this bid as the strongest of its type seeking an A-League licence."

City of Casey s Strategic Director of City Planning and Infrastructure Division Peter Fitchett, City of Greater Dandenong Councillor Jim Memeti and Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Collin Ross re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the three councils. And more importantly, the residents of the south-east bid are right behind the push for ALeague entry, as Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross explained. "When the consortium goes out looking for

funding to develop the project further, people need to know that the local government authorities are right behind the bid and the residents in those areas are right behind it," he said.

"Councils being the most direct link to the community know what the residents are after and this sporting project will undoubtedly bring activity to the south-east like nothing else."

Record money up for grabs - $1 million By Mick Floyd There will be $1 million in prizemoney available on TAB Melbourne Cup night in November, and for defending Cup winner Aston Dee Bee and his trainer Seona Thompson, preparations to defend his crown are already underway. As part of a suite of changes announced to its TAB Melbourne Cup night programme, the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club has introduced three new races and increased the prize money in seven others to create greyhound racing's first ever million dollar night. The club's flagship event - the TAB Melbourne Cup - is among the races receiving increased funding and will carry a record $630,000 in prize money, consolidating its position as the world's richest greyhound race. For Thompson, winning the 2017 TAB Melbourne Cup with Aston Dee Bee was a dream come true and is already turning her sights on the 2018 edition. "I think it's the pinnacle," she said.

"To be perfectly honest I don't think it's really hit me until now. I was actually just thinking about it a couple of days ago, I was driving to the Meadows on Saturday night and it just came into my head, like 'I won a Melbourne Cup, I'm a Melbourne Cup winning trainer!' "It's something that I'll never definitely never forget. It's the race that everyone dreams of winning. If you ask any trainer, that's the one they want to win." The joy of winning a TAB Melbourne Cup is an experience shared between trainer and owner and their family and friends, and she believes that increasing returns to participants in the sport is vital to attract new owners to the sport. "We're very fortunate that we have some very good owners. They're business people and greyhound racing is their hobby, their love. "For them, winning the Cup is life changing, and much of the money they win goes back into the dogs. It's the same for trainers - their

share of prize money gets put back into their facilities to make things better for the dogs. It's fantastic to see prize money continue to rise and give a greater incentive for more people to get involved in the sport." One of the new events on TAB Melbourne Cup night is the $35,500 Provincial Plate. A total of eight heats will be run in the series - two each at Cranbourne, Traralgon, Bendigo and Geelong - with the winner of each progressing to the final. The series is restricted to Victorian bred greyhounds with no city wins and will give more owners and trainers an opportunity to be involved in greyhound racing's biggest night of the year. "We all love new races to get involved with, especially if it involves young dogs. There's always good young dogs coming through and if they can make their way to Sandown on Melbourne Cup night - it's where everyone wants to be in November. "Any opportunity for more people to be a

In all, there will be eight feature finals on TAB Melbourne Cup night, and all races will carry a minimum of $10,000. The TAB Melbourne Cup will be run on Friday 23 November.

State’s pick for Big V sees trio of Cobras strike swiftly AFL Victoria has announced the Vic Metro and Vic Country representative squads ahead of the 2018 AFL National Inclusion Carnival next month, with a trio of Sandown Cobras players set to don the Big V. Two squads featuring Victoria's best footballers with an intellectual disability have been chosen, with a further five emergencies selected across both squads for the Carnival, set to take place in Launceston from 18 June to 23. will take part in the Carnival, with St Francis pair Kelvin Walters (Country) and Shaun Doll (Metro) also set to take part. Ten players will return to the victorious Metro squad from last year's premiership side, while six new players along with four emergencies from the Victoria FIDA Football League (VFFL) will pull on the representative colours for the first time. Williamstown Seagulls coach Rob Klemm will once again lead the Metro squad as head coach for the fourth consecutive year after leading his team to a 53-point victory over

NSW/ACT in last year's grand final. Fellow state team Vic Country will welcome seven new players to its representative squad, with 10 players returning to the side after finishing third in 2017. Selection to the Vic Country squad comes following the first representative practice match between the two country VFFL conferences, which saw over 30 regional players showcase their skills at Bendigo's Weeroona Oval. Leading the Country squad for the first time is GV Stars coach Steve Reeves. With ex-

perience coaching senior interleague with the Kyabram District Football League and Dookie Utd, Reeves will take over from Matt Deegan after two years at the helm. Held annually, the AFL National Inclusion Carnival provides an opportunity for footballers with an intellectual disability to represent their state in a week-long competition. All states and territories will have a team represented in the competition, with squads from Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, NSW/ ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia joining Vic Metro and Vic Country. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

The Bulls send a message By Hayley Wildes Noble Park stamped its authority over Rowville with a dominant second quarter to set up the win in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League on the weekend. The Bulls had 12 individual goal kickers on their way to a strong 17.16 (118) to 11.17 (83) win. Kyle Martin and Jackson Sketcher were superb for the Bulls, while Bailey Lambert and Hudson Thomas booted three goals each. For Rowville, Alex Frawley and Ziggie Alwan were in everything. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Keysborough dropped its second game in a row - falling to Highett, 6.7 (43) to 9.10 (64). The Burras were leading by 17 points at half time, but were overrun as they could only muster one goal in the second half. Cory Hargreaves and James Anwyl were best for Keysborough in a disappointing day. The Doveton Eagles returned to the winners list with a resounding win over Mount Waverley, 12.6 (78) to 23.23 (161). The Eagles used a seven goal to zero opening term to set up the win as Ricky Johnson (five goals), Peter Dye (four goals) and Michael Callinan were dominant. In Division 3, Springvale Districts got over the line in a great battle against Ashwood, 6.4 (40) to 7.8 (50). Hampton Park was simply ruthless against Block Rock, claiming a massive 22.19 (151) to 2.8 (20) win at Robert Booth Reserve. Nathan Carver and Shannon Henwood (four goals each) were dominant up forward for Hampton Park, while Michael Henry and Jackson Philpin controlled the game. Endeavour Hills overpowered Hallam from the outset and posted a percentage-boosting win, 3.4 (22) to 26.14 (170). Daniel Morrison was the star of the day, booting 10 majors for the Falcons. Sam McLean slotted six of his own and Daniel Batson was impressive in the midfield battle.

Cam Carmody, pictured here (right), was one of the Doveton Eagles’ star performers in their thumping win on Saturday. 170574 In Division 4, Lyndhurst took care of business against Sandown, 3.11 (29) to 15.8 (98). Jarryd McGrath (five goals) and Charlie Gardiner (four goals) were dynamic up forward for the Lightning. Dandenong was outplayed by Frankston as the Dolphins ran amok, winning 19.30 (144) to

5.4 (34). Michael Lawrence and Cameron Riley were best in what was a dirty day for the Redlegs. Carrum Patterson Lakes came out firing against Cerberus and were never troubled, winning 14.14 (98) to 4.4 (28). Shane Dunn and Brenton Rafferty were superb for Carrum Patterson Lakes. Meanwhile, Lyndale scored a big

win over Moorabbin, 12.9 (81) to 22.9 (141). Moses Faaola and Trent Day (five goals each) were dominant up forward for the Pumas. In Division 2 of the VAFA, St Johns was no match for Yarra Old Grammarians, falling 7.8 (50) to 21.14 (140). Josh Mourant (five goals) was a lone hand for St Johns.

The Rangers’ star Aussie Opals recruit By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Rangers are looking to bounce back from what was a tough 2017/18 WNBL season and there’s no doubt that the roster they’re putting together is built to do just that. The latest signing, sure to excite Rangers fans, is two-time Olympian, WNBA and WNBL Champion, and a previous WNBL All Star Starting Five selection; Rachel Jarry. Jarry, a born and bred Victorian, who played for the University of Canberra Capitals last season, will return to her home state to suit up for the Rangers. Jarry’s international experience - which includes winning all over the globe - is sure to provide plenty on and off the court for the Rangers. Her ability, and willingness, to do whatever her team needs - be it score, rebound or defend will be invaluable. The 26-year-old is currently playing for the Sandringham Sabres in SEABL. She has cer-

tainly made her presence known; averaging 17.2 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists - highlighted by a massive 30-point, 10-rebound and 4-assist effort against Hobart in late April. Jarry’s signature is another tick for the Rangers, who have announced a plethora of signings for the upcoming season. Bec Cole, who is currently torching opponents in SEABL action for the Melbourne Tigers and recently represented Australia at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup, will also be joining the Rangers for the upcoming WNBL season. The 26-year-old guard, who has the ability to play multiple positions, represented Australia at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and was rewarded with Team of the Tournament selection and helped Australia claim bronze. In seven SEABL games this season, Cole is averaging a league-high 25.7 points per game, along with being in the top ten for assists (4.1) and grabbing 3.7 rebounds as well. Cole’s offensive game will help the Rangers

- a team who struggled to score at times time last season - tremendously. In two of their final three games, the Rangers were only able to put up 45 and 47 points last season. Having already announced the re-signing of head coach Larissa Anderson, along with the returns of Sara Blicavs, Tessa Lavey, Tayla Roberts, Kiera Rowe, Kayla Pedersen and Bec Pizzey, the Rangers look set for big things in 2018/19. Roberts and Pedersen will be keys to the Rangers going forward. Both are huge on the defensive end, especially Pedersen who was named Dandenong’s Defensive Player of the Year last season. Pedersen simply doesn’t let her opponent have an easy basket and with the additions of Jarry and Cole, the Rangers won’t be taking a backwards step as they look to turn around their fortunes from last season. The Rangers’ WNBL season tips off in October and the schedule, for what promises to be an exciting season, will be released shortly.

Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport By Vani Naidoo So robust is the competition in the SUV market that even cars that would be technically considered quite new are having adjustments to prolong their appeal. The Mazda CX-5 is a case in point with the all-new model released in 2017 now getting a pair of new engines to keep it fresh. The changes are minimal of course, this is one of the brand’s best sellers after all, but those tweaks combined with a slight drop in price is likely to make converts of those “I’m

gonna” buyers. The CX-5 is considered one of the better looking SUVs in this class with its wide grill, sleek lines and understated rear. Nothing has changed, either inside or out, in this latest iteration and to be fair, it didn’t really need to. Good quality materials and reasonable fit and finish complement a sharply-styled interior. The cabin is quietly comfortable with good storage options and a useful layout. The high centre console means that some of the infotainment buttons are not intuitively close to hand but by and large this is a driver-centric cockpit with all the ease of use that that brings. The cloth seats in our Maxx Sport test car were rather comfortable, supportive without being too firm and with enough width to accommodate wider shoulders. Space in the rear is not as generous as some rivals in this class but two kids won’t have much to complain about. The boot, too, is a touch on the smallish side. Still able to hold a decent grocery shop and a couple of bags but you are certainly are not going to lose anything in there. A good list of standard inclusions is what we have come to expect from Mazda, and this CX-5 doesn’t let anyone down with even the bottom-of-the-range Maxx Sport still featuring comforts such as sat nav, reverse camera, leather-wrapped steering, 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and a well-rounded safety package. The CX-5’s 7.0-inch tablet-like touchscreen sits delicately poised at the top of the dash. While I tend to prefer integrated systems, this one feels premium rather than ad hoc with excellent graphics and good functionality too. Bluetooth connectivity is simple to establish, there is digital radio and sat-nav and an easy to use console-mounted rotary dial con-

MODEL RANGE Liftback Mazda CX-5 pricing and specifications: Price: from $33,290 (plus on-road costs) Engine: 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol Output: 140kW and 252Nm Transmission: Six-speed auto, AWD Fuel: 7.4L/100km (ADR Combined) Warranty: Three years unlimited kilometres Safety Rating: Five Star ANCAP Blink and you may miss the changes to the Mazda CX-5 but the tweaks have added to its appeal. trol. Still no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto though which is a shame. The engines are where the changes can be seen in this CX-5 update. They are only small though so don’t expect any great revelations. The CX-5 range features two petrol engines, a 2.0-litre front-wheel-drive four-cylinder unit which has gained 1kW of power for a total of 114kW (200Nm) and the 2.5-litre all-wheeldrive four-cylinder that powered our car which has an additional 1Nm of torque (252Nm) and 140kW. The 2.5-litre petrol engine has a cylinder deactivation feature which allows it to run just two cylinders at low speeds improving fuel economy. The 2.2-litre all-wheel-drive diesel engine has been overhauled with power increasing from 129kW to 140kW and torque from 420Nm to 450Nm. The CX-5 has a five-star ANCAP safety rating and features six airbags, blind-spot alert, reverse camera, rear cross traffic alert and lowspeed automatic emergency breaking. Higher

grades get even more goodies but things like adaptive cruise control, active lane control, automatic high-beam headlights and lane departure warnings can be optioned on the Maxx Sport. There are IsoFix fastenings in the outer two rear seats and top tethers for all three if you need them. The CX-5 is a nicely balanced, beautifully behaved SUV, composed in the corners and precise in execution. Ride quality is supported by a well-tuned suspension, grip is good and it is rather easy to drive. G-Vectoring reduces torque across the front wheels when you turn shifting the weight over the axle and restores it as you accelerate out of the corner. This increases stability and reduces the number of steering adjustments that need to be made around the twisties. While not an invitation to thrash the CX-5, it certainly aids drive quality. With a drop in price and a little fine tuning, Mazda has ensured the CX-5 is an even more competitive proposition. Already a firm favourite with Australian buyers, the updated CX-5 is sure to add to the brand’s bottom line and is certainly worth a look if you are in the market.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region After discovering her son had eczema at just eight weeks of age, Michelle Vogrinec embarked on skin care blending and aromatherapy studies to begin creating her own herbal infusions. Now, 18 years on, Michelle and husband Simon export their Gaia Skin Natural products to over 24 countries - and they’re still growing. They talk to Rebecca Skilton about the challenges and rewards of exporting.

Natural growth leads way Based in Hallam, Gaia Skin Naturals caters for the whole family with products specifically created for babies, men, women and women’s pregnancy and breastfeeding journeys. They produce 42 products across 31 lines and four brands, are sold in over 5500 pharmacies, health food, baby stores, leading grocery shops and online outlets, continue to be manufactured in Australia (excluding their Bamboo Baby Wipes) and are continuously increasing their international customer base. So how did the Vogrinecs take their homemade remedy worldwide? “It’s an interesting journey because for us, export was never the focus of the business. For us, it was being able to provide a quality product to our customers,” Simon, who is now the general manager of Gaia, said. “Around 2002 we went to market and started knocking on doors of pharmacies. We got into about three or four hundred in a very short period of time and we were successful in enlisting a couple of big chains. “We started becoming a little bit more wellknown in the marketplace and (around 2003) we put together the website. Once we did that we started getting inquiries come in in relation to export.” While Michelle and Simon were successful in establishing an Australian brand profile and admit they entered the marketplace at a time when ‘the natural health area was becoming more and more prevalent', Simon does acknowledge that if he had his time again, he would tackle the export process differently. “Export has its own advances and challenges,” Simon said. “In the early days, we were everything to everybody and jumped on every opportunity, which then resource wise, pulls you different places and can put strain and pressure on. So now we pick a few markets, we go in and we actually understand the demographic of who we're selling to. “For us it’s about sustainability; going in and capturing the market and understanding what’s involved in the marketplace before pulling back so we can strategize and think, ‘Okay, what’s required in the investment of this?’ Whether it’s financial wise, resource wise, marketing wise, trade visits - there’s a whole heap of things that we have to think about as we go forward. “Because there’s no point going into a market place if you can’t sustain it. There’s no point in going in if you can’t resource it and you can’t build your brand. Otherwise you’re here today and gone tomorrow.” Understandably, the export process exponentially increased the Vogrinecs’ workload with different marketplaces obtaining different rules and regulations. However, the Gaia message is kept as uniform as possible and product formula is unwavering. Which is why Gaia will not sell businessto-business within China; a country which requires cosmetics to be tested on animals prior to distribution.

Gaia Skin Naturals General Manager Simon Vogrinec. 179694 “China’s a really interesting one,” Simon said. “Our company stance has always been that we won’t test on animals and we won’t allow our product to be tested on animals. “But one third of the population is in China. It’s a massive, massive market ... and what’s happened over the past couple of years is that things have changed (there). The consumer in China wants quality products and they have issues with domestic produced products. They don’t - trust I think is probably the right word - that what they’re buying in their marketplace is always quality.” Simon explained that consumers in China are becoming increasingly attracted to Australia’s ‘clean, green eco-friendly’ reputation, thus placing greater trust in Australian products such as Gaia.

And while China’s government is yet to change its stance on animal-testing, businesses like Gaia can reach the Chinese marketplace as long as it’s through a business-to-consumer exchange rather than a business-to-business interaction. Within China, business-to-consumer exchanges have become increasingly popular following the rise of initiatives such as one-day online flash sales and bonded warehouses, which offer channels for ‘temporary exemptions for tariffs and other regulatory requirements which apply to conventional international trade.’ “We can get into China but not through our normal distribution model,” Simon said. “We can service it, but we can’t be actively procuring or building the brand. The online area has been fantastic in being able to gain

Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS access to the market and be able to service the consumer need, but we’re not able to step through it and actually build the business properly. “At some point we’ll be able to move into the China marketplace, but we’re not going to change our ethical standing point.” And any advice for Australian businesses looking towards exporting? “I would say you need to understand what’s involved in export because there are big risks in there,” Simon said. “People say, ‘oh that’s easy, you put it on a boat and you ship it'. Yes you do, but you have to make sure everything’s right. There are risks. “So minimising those risks, understanding what you’re getting yourself into and the questions of how, what and why you’re doing it are really important.”

Top tips for doing business with China - the easy way Before leaping into the China market, companies should be ready to face an array of planning and operational business challenges. To help businesses understand the complexities of doing business with China, the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Australia China Business Council of Victoria held a China Ready briefing in May designed

to equip businesses with the necessary basic information for planning and commencing commercial operations with China. The top five tips to emerge from the forum were: 1 - Ask yourself why you want to go to China. Will your products or services be successful in China? Why? How do your products

or services compete with other domestic and international competitors? Do you have the time, money and resources? 2 - Do your due diligence. Check on the relevant opportunities, markets, partners, suppliers, policies, etc and set a detailed plan, budget and realistic timeframes. 3 - Increase your cultural awareness and learn

as much about Chinese culture as possible. 4 - Build relationships by engaging with reliable local partners or agents to gain access to wider contacts. 5 - Seek help from the many organisations, located both here and overseas, that offer advice to Australian businesses in the development of their China strategy.
