housed in the community hub. The council has pledged that the new hall will retain the Arthur Wren name, and allocated space allocated for an art mural and Anzac memorial in the town square. Councillor Wayne Smith assured the groups that “we won’t lose anything that we’ve got”. “The aim is to have room for more. “I’m confident everyone will come out happy because it’s a great thing for the community.” Cr Smith expected the hub to be built within five years, depending on the flow of state and federal contributions. The ‘main street’ - with a grid of northsouth streets - would fix a precinct that had developed in a “mish-mash method”. For full realisation, several private land-

A draft for central Hampton Park’s radical transformation - included a long-mooted ‘main street’ - has been tabled. The as-yet unfunded vision includes a $27 million community hub with a new community hall, library, offices and family and childrens centre. The council plan, tabled at a 5 June meeting, also includes a landscaped east-west main street between the community hub and retail precinct. The 1.4-hectare precinct - to be branded Hampton Park Central - will be designed to be a pedestrian-friendly village, including an outdoor dining mall. Other features include outdoor water-play, a stormwater garden, a games area, public art-

work and a town square retaining a significant river gum tree. In the commercial precinct, up to six-storey height limits will be proposed along Hallam Road. The plan is still under negotiation with significant stakeholders Hampton Park Progress Association and Hampton Park Community Centre. The progress association had co-funded the 24-year-old Arthur Wren Hall, which will be demolished to make way for the community hub. The Hampton Park Community Centre will be demolished for car parking. Since the start of negotiations, Casey Council affirmed that the community centre, the progress association and the hall will be

owners in the retail district needed to “come on board”, Cr Smith said. “We’ve been wanting to do it for a long time. “We will fix the bits we can fix and hope that will have a flow-on effect for the shopping centre. “If it leads to nothing else, it will open up the area.” Councillor Damien Rosario said the “revitalised” precinct would activate shops along the ‘main street’. He hoped Casey could work with private landowners to “realise the dream together”. The progress association and the community centre declined to comment. The community precinct masterplan and central development plan are on public exhibition at casey.vic.gov.au.

Insight wins fight for site By Cam Lucadou-Wells The gamble paid off. After a vocal campaign, the state's only specialised school for blind children has been assured of survival with a $1.5 million State grant. The two-year funding will keep the "core" of the Berwick-based school alive while the "blockage" in enrolments is addressed, says founder Alan Lachman. "We did risk everything," he said of the public campaign. "Education Minister) James Merlino could have said shut us down. "We gambled and won." The school is set to enter a new era, Mr Lachman says. One that includes a new principal, with positions advertised for further teachers, aides and a fundraising co-ordinator. Mr Lachman was confident of doubling the school's enrolments to 25 within a year. He also hoped to build a more "positive and open" partnership with the Education Department - which he had alleged had blocked referrals from mainstream schools. In February, Mr Lachman spoke out after education regulator Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority threatened the school's closure. According to a VRQA audit, the school lacked funds and lacked students. Mr Lachman said Insight existed because vision-impaired students in mainstream schools had lower employment prospects. "I put it to James Merlino and (Premier) Daniel Andrews - do you want the school to be around? "We have to have students and the blockages have to be resolved. "If they can't be resolved in the meantime,

Alan Lachman has won his campaign for State support. 177499 we need money." Insight will also seek philanthropic funds to retain its outreach service, including mobile classrooms, into mainstream schools. The purpose-built school has a capacity for 100 students. Specialist-trained staff and aides - with a team of transcribers - teach in braille and alternative print formats. They also make use of assistive technolo-

gies, a sensory playground and customised desks and equipment. "If we get more support, we can give these kids more," Mr Lachman said. "If we can give these kids more, it allows them to get a job." A Department of Education and Training spokeswoman said the department would continue to support the operation of the school and students - with $2.4 million pro-

Teen denied bail after stolen-car crash A 14-year-old boy allegedly involved in a highspeed crash in a stolen car has been locked up in remand under the state’s recently- toughened bail laws. At a childrens court hearing on 4 June, the boy was unable to prove “exceptional circumstances” - the highest bail test which is also reserved for accused murderers. He had been on bail at the time over an alleged violent street robbery of a child in Cranbourne and an armed home invasion by a large group in Berwick. About 1am on 3 June, the stolen Pulsar allegedly triggered a speed camera, ran a red light and slammed into the front-quarter of another car at the intersection of Princes Highway and South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South, the court heard. The three occupants of the stolen car - including the 15-year-old alleged driver - alleg-

edly fled on foot. They failed to assist a driver and passenger in the extensively-damaged second car left strewn in the intersection, the court heard. There were no major injuries, the court was told. On 13 February, the boy allegedly approached and demanded an i-Phone from a child at a bus stop in Cranbourne. The victim fled - followed by two co-offenders onto a Cranbourne Transit bus. Police claimed in court that the victim was repeatedly punched and kicked by the pair to the face and stomach as he called for help from the driver. The assault continued until he obeyed the pair’s demands for his phone, the court was told. The accused boy was allegedly arrested with the stolen phone at Cranbourne railway station. He denied robbing the child in a police interview, the court heard.

In April, he was allegedly part of a group of about 10 offenders who wielded two baseball bats and broke into a Berwick home occupied by a woman and a teen, the court was told. The accused boy allegedly smashed outdoors CCTV cameras with a baseball bat. A co-offender allegedly smashed a side bedroom window with another bat. The intruders climbed in through the hole and demanded payment of an alleged debt. One of the victims was punched in the eye and hit to the back of his knee with a bat, the court heard. The intruders allegedly stole cash and gaming items. The boy later told police he didn’t know all of his co-offenders nor the victims and didn’t have prior knowledge of the break-in. He followed instructions to smash the CCTV cameras so his co-offenders wouldn’t get “locked up”, the court heard.

A defence lawyer argued for bail on the basis of the boy’s age, likely supervision by Youth Justice, his attendance at school, no prior convictions and that he was set to face court within a week. The magistrate said it got “nowhere near” meeting the ‘exceptional circumstances’ standard. “I consider that cluster (of offending) to be very serious.” The judge said the boy, if released, was an unacceptable risk to members of the public. Earlier that day, another 14-year-old boy accused of being in the stolen car and taking part in the home invasion was bailed by a childrens court under the less-strict ‘compelling reasons’ test. He was bailed on a night curfew at home and to be supervised by Youth Justice. He was ordered not to associate with the co-accused in the stolen car. 12390372-SN24-18

Richmond’s flogging of Essendon on Saturday night was particularly sweet for ardent Tiger fan, Anthony Quirk. Much to Anthony’s delight he was able to view every minute of the 71 point drubbing on his new 65 inch smart TV thanks to Star News Group and Harvey Norman. Harvey Norman delivered the television to Anthony’s Narre Warren home on Saturday just in time for the live broadcast. “It was fantastic to be able to watch the game on such a big screen, especially as I know a few Essendon supporters who used to give me hell,“ Anthony said. Anthony saw the competition advertised in his copy of the Berwick News and entered “straight away“ online. “I didn’t expect to win the TV but as the saying goes you’ve got to be in to win it.“ Anthony is a keen consumer of Star News both in print and online. “I do read the paper. The stories are interesting and I like keep up to date with the local police and what they doing. I like to keep

myself informed about what’s going on with issues in the area.“ As well as football and other live sport, Anthony is looking forward to subscribing to Netflix now he has an internet-capable television. Anthony has already sold his old TV, which he bought 15 years ago, to a workmate. “My old TV was only 45 inches but was heavier than the new one. I’ve hooked (the new TV) up to internet and can hook up my ipad if I wish to see photos on a big screen. “I watch movies than anything else. I have a decent DVD collection, box sets mainly. I am a great fan of the X-Files and science fiction shows like Babylon 5. “ Anthony thanked both Star News Group and Harvey Norman for running the competition. “I really appreciate their fine gesture in offering the TV for the competition. Harvey Norman’s delivery was very prompt and quick. The manager (Grant Hammond) was also very nice and called to congratulate me.“

By Rowan Forster Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life has been bestowed with an embracing innovation award for its quirky and highly-popular "King of the Wing" competition. Cancer Council Victoria acknowledged the branch's efforts during a gala awards night on Saturday 2 June. Committee member Brooke Hunter has revealed the group will again host a chicken wing eating clash at this year's relay for life, touting it to be bigger and better than 2017. Last year, seven competitors stepped up to the plate and took centre stage, trying to best one another by devouring the most wings. The initiative garnered a big crowd, and was a first for Victorian Relay branches.

Competitors indulge in chicken during the ''King of the Wing'' event. 181648 In six years, Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life has raised over $400,000 and the 2018 fundraising goal is set at $70,000. The 2018 event will run on November 17 and 18.

Casey’s CEO search Advertisements for a new Casey Council chief executive have been posted three months after the long-serving Mike Tyler's sudden departure. The position is currently being advertised by recruitment firm Davidson Executive Recruitment, Casey Council has confirmed. Casey people and culture manager Fran Boyd said the council was on track to start in-

terviews in July after a "suitable field" of candidates were identified. Casey has been without a permanent CEO since its long-serving boss Mike Tyler announced his sudden departure from Casey on 22 February. In the meantime, there has been a churning of acting CEOs - with council executives Sheena Frost, David Wilkinson and Steve Dalton spending time at the helm. Recently, Cr Ablett said there's "no war" be-

tween councillors and the council's administration despite the departure of Mr Tyler and the first acting CEO Ms Frost within a month. Mr Dalton, who managed the construction of Bunjil Place, was then appointed by councillors as acting chief executive. While he took scheduled leave in April, Mr Wilkinson temporarily filled the position. Davidson Executive Recruitment was selected at a special closed council meeting on 23 April.

Students at Berwick Primary School have helped people ‘sleeping rough’ brave the winter chills, On 5 June, the students rugged up in their woollen scarves, beanies and gloves to raise $1119 for charity Sleeping Bags for Homelessness. Their funds will help pay for more than 30 sub-zero sleeping bags, which will be distributed to the homeless. The cheque was gratefully received by the charity’s director Donna Stolzenberg. According to the 2016 national census, more than 24,000 Victorians were homeless. More than 1100 were sleeping in tents or on the streets. In Casey, there was an estimated 1280 homeless persons - up nearly 38 per cent in five years. Berwick Primary teacher Venessa Barlow, who leads the junior school council, said students were keen to get on board a “great cause”. “It is so close to home, as it affects so many Victorians.”

I was disappointed to read Cam LoucadoWells' article titled "No Budget On Birthday". It seemed to me a blatant attempt to discredit Susan Serey, who is a hardworking councillor and Liberal Candidate for the state seat Of Narre Warren South. There were several councillors who were unable to attend that meeting and yet you singled out Councillor Serey. Sometimes people just can't attend certain events. It's part of life. There are two types of journalists Cam – those who faithfully and accurately report the news and those who seek to influence public opinion according to their particular personal biases. Which sort are you? Also, in response to the Labour candidate's comments: given that Gary Maas, the union organiser, lives in St Kilda and has never had anything to do with the Casey Community, his comments about "respecting the local community" should be seen for what they are - hollow and hypocritical! Why can't the ALP preselect a local for once? L Grace, Berwick

tive in raising our concerns with Council, they seem to have fallen on deaf ears and like the residents of Timbarra, our daily lives include dealing with the constant and massive dropping of leaves and twigs and branches onto our gardens and driveways; the ever full gutters and spouting that is clogged up; the loss of any opportunity to maintain an attractive and lush garden; and the fear that huge limbs may well drop soon from any one of these massive trees and that someone or someone’s property will sustain serious injury/damage. We are aware of neighbours who have experienced major storm water drainage blockage issues that have required expensive repair work and that the problems were caused by Council’s trees. We also resent having to act as Council’s unpaid garden labourers in the never ending quest to try and tidy up after these incredibly messy trees. It is our view that whilst the Wallengarra

White Gums are a lovely tree, they are most suited to planting in large open spaces such as public parks and should not be foisted onto the nature strips of residential properties in suburban locations. The problems experienced by residents of Timbarra and the residents of Ludlow Court in the Panorama estate are serious and they are having a very negative impact on the ability of these people to enjoy their homes and gardens. I would really welcome any assistance that you might be able to offer in dealing with the plight we find ourselves in, and would certainly welcome any support that the Star Group local media might be able to apply to Cardinia Shire in urging them to take action to deal with the detrimental effects created by the Wallengarra White Gums. A woman pleading guilty to three phoneselling scams has been labelled a “liar” and slammed for her “despicable behaviour” by a Dandenong-based magistrate. Kate Baddack, of Narre Warren South, responded to an ad on the online vending site Gumtree from a person wanting to buy an iPhone 6 last year, the court heard on 4 June. Claiming she was in Queensland, Baddack offered to send the phone for $430. She provided her bank details, and sent a false Australia Post tracking number, the court heard. After payment was received, no phone arrived. Baddack claimed her brother would provide tracking details of a courier. Later she claimed her waters had broken and she was about to give birth, the court heard. A second victim advertised a rose-gold iPhone 6 for sale on Facebook for $400. Baddack negotiated down the price, and offered to pay cash. Later she requested to pay by electronic transfer, and sent a screen-shot of the ‘transaction’. She received the phone from the seller at a rendezvous at Hillsmeade Primary School, Narre Warren South on 4 August. The money didn’t land in the seller’s account. Baddack replied by text message that she was having a baby. Her partner later told the seller that the accused was having surgery. The seller arranged to retrieve her phone outside Dandenong police station, but no one turned up, the court was told. On 18 January, she ‘sold’ a phone advertised on Facebook for $370. Again, when paid, she provided an invalid Express Post tracking number but no phone. Baddack told police she defrauded her victims for “financial reasons”, the court was told. Defence lawyer Peter Schumpeter told the court that Baddack had been in an abusive relationship at the time. Her former partner had been pressuring

her for gambling money, Mr Schumpeter said. She was on a New Start parenting allowance, and was without drug issues, the lawyer said. Magistrate Luisa Bazzani, noting Baddack’s prior record, said “she was an old hand at it”. “She’s extremely dishonest.” The accused was asked why she hadn’t paid $1000 in court fines from last year. She claimed they were paid but was still “awaiting paperwork”. “I don’t believe it,” Ms Bazzani said. “I think she’s lying again. She is a liar.” The judge questioned how Baddack could pay another fine without stealing from others. Baddack “deserved” a “short, sharp” jail term, Ms Bazzani said. She was fined $2000 with conviction.

At only 40 years of age, Anthea Fernandes is desperately hoping she can see her two young daughters grow up. In early May this year her family received the devastating news that the Hampton Park mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer - just two months after celebrating her 40th birthday. The cancer has spread to her liver, lungs, abdomen, bowel and chest bone. There were no warning signs until suddenly in April she had a few weeks of extreme abdominal pain. "When I got the diagnosis I was just blown away," she said. "I've started some chemotherapy. At this point it might be 6-12 months treatment but because it's stage four it's more about there's no way the chemotherapy is going to kill all the cancer." Anthea, who is a mother to two children, Leah, 6, and Chloe, 5, now faces the fight of her life with months of intense treatment. And giving up is not an option for the Fernandes family who have launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $35,000. So far they have raised $28,945. Funds will go towards her treatment, along with daily household bills to make the family's life easier. "At this point it's more about buying me more time so if I get another year or two then I could possibly go in for some clinical trials, things like that," she said. Since being diagnosed, Anthea says her normal routine has been "turned upside down."

BUSINESS PROFILE

Banish chills with heaps of hot style Melbourne’s winters demand effective home heating. With so many types of heaters on the market, choosing wisely can be a challenge. Here are two ideas to consider, writes Carole Levy. SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM The Nobo Oslo range of panel heaters, in keeping with their Scandinavian styling, are white, neat and simple as can be. Their design means heaters that are practically unnoticeable yet help create a minimalist style that easily co-exists with your other furnishings. The panels’ arc is only 5.5 centimetres thick, so they don’t protrude unnecessarily and use minimal space. They can even be used in the bathroom to continue your style throughout the entire home. They are perfect for homeowners and renters alike. Because of their clever top venting, they can be wall-mounted behind furniture where other heaters cannot go. Or attach castors so they can be moved from room to room. Nobo Oslo panels are designed to withstand even the coldest of Melbourne winters. They are recommended for large bedrooms, bathrooms, and living rooms of about 24 square metres. They can be provided with thermostats, timers and child-locks and, with their fan-free technology, are great for signiicantly reduced dust and allergens.

Nobo Oslo panel heaters, ranging from 0.7kW at $299 to 2.4kW at $545, are available from a Harvey Norman store near you. SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE Mitsubishi Electric advanced technology in reverse-cycle inverter split-systems provides high-speed heating and cooling, with extra energy savings compared to non-inverter.

With a Wi-Fi option available, the systems can be managed via a compatible device, so coming

home to a cold house can be a thing of the past. And they are easy to clean, with designs that enable easy removal of front panels and air-low vents to provide open access to fans. Ranging from 2.5kW at $899 to 7.8kW with timer at $2599, various models of split-systems are available from Harvey Norman stores – and, until the end of July, they come with an eftpos gift card bonus.

Brown in orange a stand-out combination By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren-based Clinton Brown, 30, is making his mark as one of VICSES’s most youthful unit controllers. He was one of the faces of this year’s Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day campaign - a national day of thanks for SES volunteers on 23 May. Beside his full-time job, Mr Brown volunteers his time to run Casey’s only SES unit. Its 50 members are on hand to respond to more than 640 callouts a year. However, 2018 has proven unusually busy, with more than 400 calls for help in the first five months. The calls can come any time, Mr Brown says. Often volunteers are roused out of their beds to attend a leaking roof, flooding home or a fallen tree.

They are often braving the worst of wet and windy weather. Mr Brown’s duties are many, but he enjoys it. He keeps the unit financially compliant and sound, ensures the members are trained and the equipment is up-to-date. When he started with the unit in 2009, he was just eager to meet a new challenge and new people. “It’s the friendships and the people - you respect the people who are prepared to get out of bed in the pouring rain to help somebody. “It’s about giving back and helping people in their time of need.” With Casey’s second unit set to roll-out in Cranbourne, the SES eagerly seeks new members. They gain accredited training and expertise in general rescue and emergency operations. To share a message of thanks to VICSES volunteers, get on Twitter and Facebook and use the hashtag #thankyouSES and #WOWday.

Debt helpers to the rescue By Cam Lucadou-Wells Senior citizen Mary was saddled with an unaffordable bank debt she didn’t ask for. She had thought she was guarantor for her daughter’s personal loan. But when her daughter went bankrupt, Mary discovered she was down as a co-lender. The massive debt was transferred to the aged pensioner to pay back in fortnightly payments or else, she could lose her house and possessions. But by a miraculous intervention, she was not only relieved of the debt. Her repayments were refunded, and compensation was even paid out by the bank. The miracle-worker in this case was a qualified financial counsellor at Casey North Community Information and Support Service. “Not every outcome is this fabulous, but sometimes a great deal can be achieved,” Casey North CISS executive director Susan Magee said. In recent years, there’s been a noticeable spike in people buckling under accumulated debt and seeking free, confidential assistance from the CISS. In 2017, more than 800 people sought the free financial counselling service due to debt. That figure is on track to rise again in the most recent post-Christmas, back-to-school period. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show Casey has 87 insolvent debtors one of the largest in Victoria. Financial counsellors lay out options to overcome financial problems, provide tools to manage personal finances and advocate for their clients to creditors Ms Magee stresses there’s “no magic wand” but counsellors can help make people aware of their rights. As in Mary’s case, the financial counsellor got in touch with the bank’s hardship department - an option that many don’t know exists. The department then deemed Mary should not have been included as a borrower under banking legislation. “Not everyone knows what a hardship

Casey North CISS financial counsellors Sue Deland, Lisa Hansen and Maree Cummings. department is or how to access this great resource,” Ms Magee said. “This is a basic for getting fair treatment when struggling to pay bills and should be offered to people when they call their telcos, utility companies and other companies where payments have become burdensome.” Financial counsellors can help ask for a hold on debt repayments if someone loses their job or loses income due to injury. They can negotiate a better deal for “unfair debt” and step in on your behalf when your house or car may be repossessed. Family violence victims with “sexually transmitted debt” as a result of financial abuse can also be assisted. “Lenders have responsibilities as do borrowers and financial counsellors are about making sure everyone is getting a ‘fair deal’.” Sometimes however the options aren’t attractive. Hard decisions are sometimes required, Ms Magee says. Last year, the CISS provided more than $390,000 of emergency relief to more than 4000 visitors. It is now in the midst of a winter drive to stock up on coats and non-perishable foods for emergency relief up to the end of the financial year. To help, drop in items to 90-92 Victor Crescent, Narre Warren.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

With Jane Rivett-Carnac, volunteer researcher with the Narre Warren and District Family History Group.

1. What’s the most fascinating part about being a member of the Narre Warren and District Family History Group? Finding the unexpected connections that six degrees of separation moment when you find the person you’re talking with has a connection to your past. Solving a puzzle or brick wall for someone else and sharing the moment of discovery.

THREE … ways to keep your house warmer this winter...

1

Use your curtains.

2

Install insulation in your house (or top up old and thinning insulation).

2. What is something people don’t know about you? I used to teach ballet. 3. What is the most memorable moment in your life? Achieving a childhood dream, with a visit to Vienna and the Spanish Riding School in 2012 and in 2014 standing at the home of maternal ancestors at Tiverton in Devon 160 years after they came to Australia.

A well-insulated house can use as much as 45 per cent less energy for heating and cooling, which means that insulation pays for itself in cheaper bills.

4. What is your favourite television show? The West Wing, Gruen and Mash. 5. At school, I... Was co-editor of the school magazine, favourite subject was British and Australian History. 6. What is your favourite place to visit in Victoria? I have two, a day at the State Library or a trip to Warrnambool when it’s whale watching time. 7. What is your favourite book? International: The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund De Waal. Australian: Under the Coolibah Tree by G F Young.

On the rare occasion of free time I spend it lost

in a book, I’ve been known to start a book at lunchtime and finish it at 3 in the morning. 10. Where would your perfect holiday destination be? Six months in the United Kingdom so I could walk in my ancestors' footsteps.

Move your sofa.

It might feel great to have your favourite seat in front of the radiator, but it’s absorbing heat that could be warming your home. By moving it away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. Heat from the sun is free so make the most of it. Open your curtains and let the sunlight in during the day to make use of this free heat. When it gets dark, shut your curtains, which act as another layer of insulation and keep warmth in your rooms.

Learning Stone at centre Berwick College’s deepening ties with indigenous culture were cemented with the opening of the school’s Wominjeka Centre and its Learning Stone on 30 May. During the ceremony, students performed, spoke and displayed art works. Wurundjeri elder Ian Hunter delivered Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony.

The event coincided with National Reconciliation Week and its theme Don’t Keep History a Mystery. The Wominjeka Centre, opened by Department of Education and Training regional director Stephen Gniel, will provide life-skills support for students with additional physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs. The Learning Stone will be a place for

groups to build ties and awareness about local indigenous culture. Prinicipal Kerri Bolch said both projects celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture - which is a “cross-curriculum priority” for the school. Students take part in a Smoking ceremony, meaningful class activities, excursions and The Long Walk during Dreamtime at the ‘G.

“Through acknowledging our shared history, staff, students and parents stand together in unity for a brighter future for those who are vulnerable, and are committed to act for the futures of our indigenous young people.” The college won the 2017 Victorian Education Excellence Award for outstanding Koorie education.

NEWS The proposed sports precinct will include hockey, baseball, rugby league, rugby union and more.

Sports zone Planning has begun for a proposed Clyde Park Sports Precinct with the City of Casey aiming to acquire about 82 hectares of land to develop the precinct. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has begun contacting properties located in the acquisition area. The subject site is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Ballarto Road and Muddy Gates Lane, Clyde. The proposed precinct will be located adjacent to the future Melbourne Water retarding basin and a proposed Parks Victoria regional park. Combined, the three facilities will pro-

vide approximately 398 hectares of public land. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said that all properties included in the acquisition have been contacted directly by DEWLP via a letter, and Council officers will be following up with these properties with a phone call to organise a time to meet directly with the land owners. "The proposed location of the precinct was determined in consultation with relevant agencies - City of Casey, DELWP, Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water," said the Mayor. "The Minister for Planning has established the Regional Parks Standing Advisory Committee to consider the views of the public and make recommendations to Council and the government on the final boundaries of the Clyde Park Sports Precinct and the adjacent regional park. "As a Council we are focused on planning for and delivering facilities that will meet the needs of our growing municipality. "A municipality the size of Casey requires a significant number of sporting facilities to meet demand, to provide diversity and choice, and to ensure individuals can develop in their chosen sport. The Clyde Regional Sports Precinct would provide facilities for a number of sports that are currently underprovided in Casey including baseball, softball, hockey, rugby league and rugby union". An information session has been scheduled on 7.00 pm, Tuesday 12 June 2018 at the Cranbourne Golf Club (Golf Links Road, Cranbourne) for people interested in finding out more about the proposal. Accused argues drug ring defence By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man is fighting a drug possession charge, arguing a clear bag of suspected meth found in his shoe were actually jewels, a court has heard. The man had allegedly told police that he’d found the bag near a bus stop in Doveton, and kept it to feature the “stones” in a ring, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 4 June. He later attended a police station in response to a bench warrant, the court was told. Police alleged that the man, during a police search, removed the bag from his underpants’ waistband and placed it in his shoe. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked the man about the police observations during the search. “It seems like a lot of work for a ring. “So your defence is it’s not methamphetamine but it’s a rock for a ring?” The court heard that forensic analysis of the substance would take up to five months. The man did not have a significant prior criminal history - and no prior drug-related offences. Therefore, the man was likely to receive a good-behaviour bond if guilty, Mr Vandersteen said. The judge advised the man to seek Victoria Legal Aid advice prior to booking in a contest hearing. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

He and his 78-year-old grandmother were reportedly struck on Maramba Drive, near the Narre North Road intersection, about 8.45am, police say. The boy was airlifted to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries to his head and leg. The woman was taken by road ambulance to hospital in a stable condition. She had no obvious injuries, according to Ambulance Victoria. Police are investigating the cause of the crash. By Cam Lucadou-Wells A locally-penned classic of military history has passed through the hands of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and now the students at Fountain Gate Secondary College. The school was presented a donated copy of the spectacular The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers on 5 June by Casey councillors Rex Flannery and Susan Serey as well as the book’s author Michael Madden. Mr Madden, of Berwick, was impressed by the Fountain Gate students’ enthusiasm for Australia’s 100 recipients of the highest award for military valour. “It’s encouraging to find young people so interested in military history.” Days ahead of the recent Royal wedding, VC recipient Keith Payne presented the first and second printed copies to the Queen and to Prince Charles. Interest in the book has been wide, including the VC families and military historians. Just 40 of the 400 printed copies are yet to be sold, with an audio edition in the pipeline. Casey Council estimated that the free public launch at Bunjil Place on 21 April attracted 620 participants, with about 280 books sold on the day. In all there were 4000 visitors, including 1000 into the library that day. Cr Serey convinced Mr Madden to move the launch from its original venue at the MCG. She told a council meeting on 5 June that the Bunjil Place-staged day was a “fantastic event”. It attracted VC families from across the state and nation, including Mr Payne - one of four

It opened the launch up to the local community and families, he said. “It was such a fine day, a perfect storm. “It was absolutely the right decision.” The stunning fly-over by four Yakovlev Yak52 and North American T-6 Harvard aircraft was typical of the good will.

As the planes seared over Bunjil, each dipped a wing in salute to Mr Payne. For as Mr Madden says, even the highestranking military officers salute VC recipients. The Edwards family enjoy lunch after the walk.

Walk for gift Walkers stepped out in support for education in Timor Leste during a fundraiser at Wilson Botanic Park on 20 May. The Walk for Timor raised more than $1000 for learning materials at two English language study centres in the municipality of Ermera. The centres are key to young people learning English and opening up a range of study and career options, spokeswoman Jan Trezise said. The walk was organised by Casey-based group Friends of Ermera and Year 9 students from Gleneagles Secondary College. It was followed by nourishing homemade soup, fresh fruit and cakes.

Barks in the park Wilson Botanic Park turned into a jungle of animals for the annual Casey Pet Expo on 19 May. The City of Casey event promoted responsible pet ownership with a splash of fun - wild-

life demos, pet photo-booths and the entertaining Flipping Disc Dogz. Mayor Geoff Ablett said Casey had 37,000 registered cats and dogs - one of the highest pet-registration rates in Melbourne.

"Pets are part of our families and through our journey to transform our most popular transactions we have made the process of pet registration easier through the introduction of a new digital form."

Tour with the locals Tour Local Pakenham specialise in seniors touring and offer an exciting range of one day, extended and theatre tours. Led by mother and son team Joanne and Raymond Staindl, Tour Local provides an enjoyable, affordable and accessible way for seniors to continue travelling to destinations both near and far. “We provide individuals with the opportunity to meet like-minded people who share the same zest for travelling and the same desire to share new experiences,” Raymond said. “We offer more than just simple transport from point A to point B - we provide our people with an experience from start to finish that they won’t soon forget.” As a family owned and operated business, Tour Local Pakenham individualises each trip. Joanne and Raymond are happy to sit down with a group to discuss destination options and craft a tailored tour experince. Tour Local is also a coach charter company, managing the logistics of both large-scale transfers as well as every day transfers. “Anyone can hire a bus, drive to a place, take a photo and return home. It’s what happens throughout that journey that truly makes an experience,” Raymond said. “We put people at ease from the very start. We make sure everything is taken care of and we assist in any way we can throughout the journey - it’s all about that family feel.”

Tour Local provide people with an experience that they won’t forget. Tour Local was started by Joanne 10 year ago when she began visiting local villages and clubs in the area. “The business has grown a lot since then with word of mouth being our biggest contributor, as people just leave talking about our tours and the experience we create,” Raymond said.

Customers of Tour Local can be assured they are in experienced hands with both Joanne and Raymond who are both experienced travellers. “Joanne first found her zest for the travel industry back when she used to work as a tour guide on the coaches in New Zealand.

From there her love for the travel life has only grown,” Raymond said. “I’m an avid traveller and have spent a good part of my past 10 years travelling the world and living abroad.” For more information about Tour Local Pakenham, email ray@tourlocal.com.au

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

From Officer to the world By Rebecca Skilton Truly Australian and inspired by nature. That's the message Officer's Jax Wax Australia business owners Tina and Geoff Copland take with them worldwide. Exported to numerous countries and regions including Asia, Australasia, America, Africa and Europe, Jax Wax Australia is the manufacturer of quality wax products. Having recently rebranded (formally trading under the brand name Adam and Eve), the company works to emphasise its Australian roots, a factor that Tina says is an enticing element for overseas markets. "'Australia' is important for exporting," Tina, who is the CEO of Jax Wax, said. "To brand with 'Australia' is really, really important. People associate Australia with things like 'clean, green, and high quality,' so we wanted to keep that connection (with the use of 'Australia' in the rebranding). "We do a lot of travelling and we've found that people in other countries give their businesses (an Australian feel). There's a company in the UK called Outback Organics. It's manufactured in Spain. There's another one called Australian Body Care who are from the UK as well. "So we want to get across that we're genuinely Australian. It's something we really push on our website, and in our marketing when we go overseas" In order to help spread their Aussie message, Jax Wax products have native names, and packaging is styled using designs of Australian plants. The reverse side of products provides information about what the plants have been used for in Australia historically. In extension, Jax Wax is working with local sporting and educational groups to help support the future of young Indigenous kids and teenagers and sponsor The Kempsey Dragons Junior Rugby League Club. "What we're finding through training is that people don't really care how the wax is performing; they want to know about us and what we stand for," Jax Wax Marketing Manager Rosie Hopgood said. "They want to know that we're vegan, that we're cruelty free, that we are giving back to Aboriginal people; that we are more than just wax and more than a brand - that we have substance." Jax Wax began in 2000 as manufacturers of wax seal for wine bottles, before moving on to manufacture a range of products including strip, hot and cartridge wax. Admitting their focus was always on export, the company distributes four to eight palettes of products monthly, with each palette holding between 700 and one thousand kilos. "Our focus is on export ... we always set out to export," Tina said. "There are several billion people in the

world and there is about 25 million in Australia so you have to export. I think our business is currently around 50% exports and we expect within five years it to be about 70% to 90% export, so that's the focus." With the business still growing and expanding into new countries, Tina and the Jax Wax team have become well-practiced in tackling new and different marketplaces. On entering a new market, the team attends trade shows, preforms demonstrations and undertakes strenuous research to ensure that both Jax Wax

and the potential distributor reflect the same ideals and values. However for Tina and her tight-knit, familylike team, as well as providing the marketplace with a quality product, they insist it is paramount for businesses to maintain an ethical and moral compass. "I think you have to have a moral compass," Tina said. "We are an ethical company and I firmly believe you have to treat people correctly.

"We never undercut or sell around our distributors either here or overseas. Because we will get salons who say; 'can I buy from you direct' and we'll say '9 out of 10 times we will be more expensive'. We don't undercut (our wholesalers)," Tina said. "The reality is that is that we want to be in a place where they will promote us because they're happy dealing with us. "Because rather than having a short term game, we look at things for the long term."

Education boost for Berwick Professionals throughout south-eastern Melbourne will now have the opportunity to advance their career following the announcement that Federation University Australia will offer a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program from its Berwick Campus. Arts thaw winter's freeze Live music, art history and children's entertainment pack Casey's three-month Winter Arts Festival from 1 June. Highlights include the Home of the Boyds: Harkaway and 'The Grange' exhibition and casual Knit and Stitch sessions on Friday afternoons in June. There's a Melbourne Chamber Orchestra performance of Mozart and the Classical Age, live acoustic music at the Old Cheese Factory and a Melbourne International Comedy Festival roadshow. In June, art lovers have a chance to take part

in Bollywood dance, craft and painting workshops, author high teas and Lynbrook's winter ukelele festival. Festival attendance grew by more than 300 per cent last year, setting the stage for a bigger 2018 program, says mayor Geoff Ablett. The bevy of studio tours, concerts, art workshops, exhibitions and extensive school holiday attractions were great exposure to Casey's artists and art groups, he said. "As our municipality continues to grow it's vital that we provide opportunities for our community to experience and enjoy the arts

close to home. "Thankfully, we are fortunate enough to have a precinct such as Bunjil Place at our doorstep which helps to facilitate the progression of arts in Casey." All events are free or low cost. Details: casey.vic.gov.au/winterartsfestival

Councils rally behind bid By Nick Creely It’s now a year since the Team 11 pitch materialised at a 1 June launch event in the heart of Greater Dandenong. The south-east of Victoria has united as one behind the bid to push for an A-League and W-League admission into the national competition, with 12 local councils now pledging support for the bid. On Friday 1 June, the three councils driving the bid - the City of Greater Dandenong, the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia - have re-committed to the cause by re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that kick-started the process 12 months ago. However, those MoUs have been bolstered by Letters of Supports from surrounding councils including: Frankston City, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Knox City, City of Monash, Baw Baw Shire, Bass Coast Shire, South Gippsland Shire, Latrobe City and Wellington Shire. These letters were included in Team 11’s Expression of Interest document submitted to Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Deloitte last week. The Letters of Support are indicative of the widespread interest in Team 11’s bid in the south-east of Victoria. City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the re-signing of the MoU was important in the commitment to bringing the Team 11 bid to life. “The A-League, W-League and Youth Team bid is progressing very well,” he said. “The three councils are working very hard together. We committed to this 12 months ago but have re-signed this MoU to make sure that we are all working together to bring a club to the south-east.” This sentiment was echoed by City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, who believes it is a signifi-

City of Casey’s strategic director of city planning and infrastructure division Peter Fitchett, City of Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti and Cardinia Shire Council Mayor, Cr Collin Ross re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the three councils. cant moment for the region and the strength of the bid. “The re-signing of the MOU is a real line in the sand moment for Team 11’s bid,” Ablett said. “Enormous amounts of work have been done over recent months to position this bid as the strongest of its type seeking an A-League licence.”

And more importantly, the residents of the south-east bid are right behind the push for ALeague entry, as Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross explained. “When the consortium goes out looking for funding to develop the project further, people need to know that the local government authorities are right behind the bid and the

residents in those areas are right behind it,” he said. “Councils being the most direct link to the community know what the residents are after and this sporting project will undoubtedly bring activity to the south-east like nothing else.”

These Cavaliers are on a roll as they make history By Russell Bennett The Casey Cavaliers' under-12 girls basketball team has made history as the first group of girls from the association ever to be invited to participate in the prestigious National Junior Classic, held this Queen's Birthday weekend. The event is a Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (MUVJBL) tournament that accepts the top eight teams in each age group from Victoria, as well as an additional eight interstate teams. Essentially, invited teams are considered to be the best teams in their age groups across the country. The future is looking incredibly bright at the Cavaliers, with a host of other teams from the association following suit and also entering into the higher ranks of the MUVJBL competition. Leah Cornell and Emilija Dakic can't wait for this weekend's tournament, as two key components of the Casey side. They and their team mates are eager to show what they're made of on the big stage. "We've really been working as a team - it's not just one person doing everything," Leah explained. Emilija added that the particularly tightknit group was constantly working on improving its weaknesses under the watchful eyes of head coach and assistant coach Michael and Ashlea Feldman. Both girls said their coach Michael encourages them to be the best they can be, and that Ashlea knows how hard it is to play at a high level having played so recently. They both love representing the Cavaliers, and for their coaches. "Michael is trying to make us the best basketballers we can be," Emilija added. Leah said the enormity of the side's achievement in making the tournament had just started to fully sink in. The history-making Casey Cavaliers under-12 girls team includes: Coach Michael Feldman, assistant coach Ashlea Feldman, team manager Lisa Beck, and players Abbey Beck, Tatum Bolten, Lily-Belle Brown, Evelyn Connelly, Leah Cornell, Emilija Dakic, Mia Davey, Sierra Feldman, Tash Kearley, and Victoria Meredith. 181686 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT we'll appreciate it more because we actually did make it, and not many do." For his part, as coach of the team, Michael acknowledged that he "probably underestimated" the magnitude of what his side had accomplished so far, and added he can't wait for the girls to show what they can do at the tournament. "I think we can be very competitive over the weekend, so I'm really excited about that and really excited to see the girls perform," he said. "If the girls bring their A game, we'll be very competitive." Michael said his group never ceases to amaze him. "They surprise me nearly every week with their understanding of the game," he said.

"They understand where to be and what to do. I tell them a set play and they go out and do it. "This bunch of girls just all want to be there. They all come together as a team and want to learn so it makes my job a lot easier when they want to do that. "They've been amazing, and the way they've been able to adapt to me has been fantastic. "I think sometimes we underestimate these girls - they'll be going home, studying the games and what they've been doing, and some of them really get upset with themselves when they make little mistakes. They go back and think about how they can improve, and that's a real bonus for these girls because at that age group it's such a great quality to have."

The Casey under-12 girls have been drawn in Group C alongside the Forestville Eagles, Frankston, and Canberra. Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League general manager John Hilton said the 2018 National Junior Classic will raise the bar yet again as the best 128 sides descend on Melbourne for the high-calibre contest. "It's great to see teams from across Victoria and Australia getting ready for this year's National Junior Classic," he said. "For the best teams across Victoria, the Classic is the perfect opportunity for our own to showcase their talents in an elite tournament environment." The invitation-only event is capped at 16 teams per age group. Thursday, 7 June, 2018

Narre wins Kalora classic SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 7 Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners believes Saturday's clash at Kalora Park was one of the best he's witnessed at local level for a long period of time. While it was not a grand final or a match that defined both clubs, the intensity, passion and skill level will instantly make this game a classic. In the end, the Magpies notched up a seventh straight win - 13.10 (88) to 10.18 (78)

- to remain undefeated. In a first half owned by Stewart Kemperman's men, the Wickers simply couldn't put away the home side after booting 2.6 in the second term and taking in a 16-point lead. The Wickers got the fast start, booting five first quarter goals to jump out to an 18-point lead, with the Magpies struggling to adjust to the rampant pressure being applied - particularly through the middle of the ground where Madi Andrews, Bryce Rutherford and Travis Tuck were able to exert control over the stoppages.

By Nick Creely

Then came a typical, no fuss response from the Magpies, who clawed their way back to life in a third quarter of pure grit. While star Wicker Bryce Rutherford started strongly with a couple of early clearances, the Magpies got the game on their terms, running hard from the back half and catching the visitors flat footed. Despite a goal from champion Michael Riseley, who floated forward with poise and snagged a goal against the tide, a truly incredible team goal starting off with some extraordinary piece of dare by Hayden Stagg and finished by Michael Collins kicked the home side into gear. Mitch Cox roared in excitement after booting yet another clutch goal, and after a completely dominant last ten minutes the home side got their noses in front by just one solitary point at the final break. The crowd was packed to their rafters, throwing their voices behind every bump, kick and mark, and the roar was deafening each time a player got a skerrick of open space in a thrilling final term with many twists. After last week's fade away in the final term against Cranbourne, the pressure was fixed firmly on the reigning premiers, who were encountering a home side charging hard after two early goals. The Wickers urgently needed a lift against the almighty momentum being built, and they got one, namely through Michael Riseley, who helped set Tom Brennan on a path to goal that cut that margin back to seven. Narre's desperation at the contest was pivotal, moving the ball forward by whatever means possible. With just six minutes to go and with the score just five points and the tension reverberating across the ground, the Wickers almost made magic happen. Travis Tuck almost snared one of the great goals in heavy congestion, but utter desperation from Col McNamara ensured just a single fingernail could get to the ball right on the line just metres away from a group of Berwick supporters. Then the match sealer came, a curler around his body from Shane Scanlon gave the Magpies enough breathing space to close out a tense final five minutes. "The third quarter we played our way and came in a point up at three quarter time, and the opposition only kicked two points the week before in the final quarter, so we worked on the fact we were pretty fit," Shinners said. "It (Berwick's last quarter) wasn't the main topic of conversation at the huddle, but when the players were getting in position I said to them they needed to move the ball quickly and run hard, because they didn't score in the last quarter last week, so we needed to capitalize on their confidence levels, and if you score early, you plant a seed in the opposition's head. "It was one of the best local games of footy in a long while, it was pretty physical and it wasn't easy to get a kick." Down at Starling Road, a fast starting Cranbourne disposed of Officer, 8.3 (51) to 18.18 (126).

The second placed Eagles continued on with their blistering form, this time against an Officer side that is struggling to make an impact against the competition heavyweights. While it was always a long shot that the Kangaroos would trump an Eagles team fresh off an unbelievable comeback win over Berwick, it was expected that the home side could stick with Steve O'Brien's group for at least three quarters. With Marc Holt (five goals) back to his absolute best and debutant Nick Russo (two goals) impressing, the Eagles put on a clinic with their speed, opening up a 63-point half time lead. "He (Holt) was dominant, I think he kicked 5.6, so he could have really filled his boots - he kept working at it and got his rewards at the end of the day," Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien said of Holt's performance. Worryingly for the Kangaroos, the Eagles have been a dominant second half side throughout 2018 so far, but fought admirably to kick six goals in the third term before being held goalless in the final term in a bitterly disappointing last quarter. O'Brien said a fast start was pivotal after finishing with such a flurry last week against Berwick. "It was probably our key focus point during the week, to be honest - we wanted to get off to a fast start, and try and take the game away from Officer as early as possible," he said. "We were able to get the game on our terms very early in the piece, and that started in the midfield, they played some accountable footy, and we were able to impact the scoreboard." But the only negative is a 30 minute lapse in the third quarter, in which the Kangaroos managed to kick six goals to one. O'Brien said it could have been for a number of factors. "You've got to give Officer some credit, but we had a bit of a mental lapse - we had a pretty young side in there, and maybe they were smelling roses a bit, but we did what we had to do, and we re-adjusted with a six goal final quarter," he said. Doveton, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win of the 2018 SEFNL season, with Beaconsfield flexing its muscles at the right time to register a 76-point win at AJ Robinson Oval, 6.6 (42) to 17.16 (118). The Doves - who have been decimated by even more key losses the last few weeks - battled manfully but ultimately couldn't sustain their effort for four quarters against a side that is in strong form. And in the final game, Pakenham walked away with a comfortable win over TooradinDalmore 12.3 (75), with the Lions staying in touch with the top five. It was a scrappy start to the game, with the scores remaining level at quarter time with plenty of turnovers getting the crowd impatient. However, sticking to their defensive structures, the Lions got the break on the game in the second term, booting six goals to four and taking in a lead of 15-points at half time. The margin eventually blew out to 33 with a five goal last quarter. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Beaconsfield is one of the current SEFNL clubs that seem destined for the ‘AFL Greater East’ competition. 179194

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Footy’s brand new frontier By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely The pieces are falling into place and, gradually, they're making up the AFL Greater East puzzle. All eight South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) clubs have now given a clear indication of where their futures may lie following a dramatic week of local football and netball developments. After Officer and Beaconsfield made it clear that it was their preference to join AFL Yarra Ranges' AFL Greater East divisional football and netball set-up, Cranbourne announced that - ideally - it would join the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) from 2019. Since then, Doveton, Berwick, TooradinDalmore, Narre Warren, and Pakenham have all given a clear indication of which directions they wish to head. Through a statement on the Doveton Facebook page, president Aaron Henwood said it was the recommendation of the club executive for the Doves to affiliate with AFL Greater East from 2019. The club is scheduled to hold its special general meeting at Robinson Reserve on 26 June, at which point members will vote to formally decide its future. Berwick president Glen Gambetta, meanwhile, said his club was also "leaning towards" AFL Greater East citing its eagerness to keep its netball and football arms together. "We would like to see this region have some representation in Eastern (the Eastern Football League), and while we would like to potentially be there, we will lose netball forever," he said. "We'll make a recommendation on 12 June but at this stage we are leaning towards AFL Greater East." Along similar lines, Narre Warren president Stuart Stephenson said his club would also vote on 12 June. "The expectation is that we'll vote towards AFL Greater East," he said. "We've been strong on retaining our football and netball clubs into the future." Pakenham president Darren Sidebottom was much more succinct, simply saying that the Lions had two options to consider - Yarra Ranges (AFL Greater East) or the Gippsland berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

League - at its vote tonight (Wednesday, 6 June). Tooradin-Dalmore's Greg Kelly, meanwhile, made it clear that his club sees its future in West Gippsland. "As it stands, we have applied for West Gippsland and we've had several meetings with the competition, and they've been very positive," he said. "They (AFL Gippsland) are re-structuring and their whole game has changed. "We are a small country town; we simply can't compete with the Berwicks, Narre Warrens and Beaconsfields, and it's simply not fair. We are throwing everything we can at this - we've put the paperwork in and are just waiting for the review to come through." Officer became the first piece of the puzzle to seemingly slot into place late last month when its committee met to formally endorse a transfer to AFL Yarra Ranges - a motion that the News believes was passed unanimously. Officer was the first SEFNL club to publically announce its position and has since written to AFL Yarra Ranges to officially commence the process of a move. Officer Senior Football Club president Nick McLennan told the News that his club's decision was one that hadn't been taken lightly, "but one which we know is best for the future of our football club and football in the region". "One of the driving factors behind this decision was also the future of the ROC Netball Club, as it is very much our desire to ensure that both our football and netball clubs can continue to coexist and play our home games together," he said. "We think this option presents a great opportunity for both our respective clubs." In a statement provided to the News, club president Gerry Kelly said: "Due to the upcoming demise of the SEFNL competition at the end of 2018, the Cranbourne Football Club has sought and gained permission from AFL South East to negotiate with the MPNFL and member clubs to join their league in season 2019." The News understands that AFL Greater East is still in the frame for the Eagles as a contingency plan should the MPNFL clubs vote against them coming across.

But Cranbourne believes that the MPNFL offers its best long-term option for playing in a competitive and stable competition. Kelly said his club had been on a long journey to this point, taking an "exhaustive look" at each of its options - including the Eastern Football League, Yarra Ranges, and the MPNFL. "We plan to speak to all of the MPNFL clubs in the coming month and we hope they'll be accepting of us because of our geographic situation, but also to help them form a third division," he added. "We'd love to be part of the MPNFL - that's where we see our future." Beaconsfield, meanwhile, had a committee meeting on Tuesday of last week and voted in favour of a move to AFL Greater east after much soul-searching by president Troy Robinson and other key figures from within the club. "It's a massive pressure valve release for us," Robinson said. "It's been a frustrating topic for the past 12 months, so to have a resolution allows us to go through the formal application process, and it's a massive relief for us. "We're excited that we can finally move on to the future now - it was a 99.9 per cent vote in favour of." Robinson said the club did its due diligence and considered a move to the powerful EFL but opted for the Yarra Ranges proposal for one major reason - a factor that overrode everything. "The key link strategically is that we retained a relationship with netball, and that's the most underpinning and overwhelming factor for us as a club," he said. "We have a very strong relationship with our netball club and that was a massive desire to retain that, and a critical ingredient was to go in a competition that could accommodate both football and netball together." The club is now at the stage of formally applying to join AFL Yarra Ranges, but Robinson did admit that the long-term future of his club could well be elsewhere. "Is it the long term the right choice? Crystal ball, we can't tell at this point - we have a

massive desire to be involved in the West Gippsland competition, that's our future flavour of choice," Robinson said. "We want to pursue that model - we want to play the highway, the Garfields, Nar Nar Goons, the Bunyips, Warragul and Drouin, and we believe there's a massive opportunity if the AFL gets smart, re-zones and looks at the football model properly. "We believe that's still the right option for our football, but it's not on the table right now, but we'll definitely be showing interest in the coming years." The AFL Yarra Ranges' presentation to the SEFNL clubs - centred on what's set to become the AFL Greater East competition - clearly made a strong impression when it was rolled out. It clearly set out the proximity of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges clubs to those currently in the SEFNL, with the travel times between them contrary to popular belief. Should SEFNL clubs join the AFL Yarra Ranges competition from 2019, that would lead to the creation of a third division. The current structure features two tiers in a promotion-relegation format, but a third tier next year - currently spoken about as 'Division 2' - would be for the smaller and/or northern-most clubs such as Alexandra, Kinglake, Thornton Eildon, Yea, and any other potential clubs that wish to join. Divisions 1 and 2 - or 'Premier' and 'Division 1' - would include the likes of Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Emerald, Gembrook Cockatoo, Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, Warburton Millgrove and Yarra Glen out of the existing AFL Yarra Ranges, in addition to the SEFNL clubs. It's therefore extremely unlikely that the SEFNL clubs would face any northern AFL Yarra Ranges clubs anytime soon. When it comes to implementing the proposed new competition, the presentation from the AFL Yarra Ranges stated that once a formal application is received, approval can be provided in a short time frame. It also stated that the whole new set-up could be in place for the first bounce of the 2019 season. Thursday, 7 June, 2018

Falcons soar past Hawks By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 8 Noble Park stamped its authority over Rowville with a dominant second quarter to set up the win at Pat Wright Senior Oval on Saturday. The Bulls had 12 individual goal kickers on their way to a strong 17.16 (118) to 11.17 (83) win. Kyle Martin and Jackson Sketcher were superb for the Bulls, while Bailey Lambert and Hudson Thomas booted three goals each. For Rowville, Alex Frawley and Ziggie Alwan were in everything. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 8 While Devon Meadows stuck with Hastings for a half, they were overpowered by the Blues in a seven goal to two second half at Glover Reserve, 9.10 (64) to 16.16 (112). The Panthers got the fast break to lead by two points at quarter time, but the Blues - led

superbly by Luke Hewitt (four goals) got the momentum back to take a narrow lead at half time. Despite the usual fight by the likes of Mat Fletcher, Josh Stewart, Gavin Kerr and Arthur Churchill, the Panthers stood no match for the class of the Blues in the second half. Pearcedale, meanwhile, were belted by Red Hill at Tractor Park, 4.10 (34) to 21.13 (139). SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 8 Keysborough dropped its second game in a row - falling to Highett, 6.7 (43) to 9.10 (64). The Burras were leading by 17 points at half time, but were overrun as they could only muster one goal in the second half. Cory Hargreaves and James Anwyl were best for Keysborough in a disappointing day. The Doveton Eagles returned to the winners list with a resounding win over Mount Waverley, 12.6 (78) to 23.23 (161). The Eagles

used a seven goal to zero opening term to set up the win as Ricky Johnson (five goals), Peter Dye (four goals) and Michael Callinan were dominant. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 7 Springvale Districts got over the line in a great battle against Ashwood, 6.4 (40) to 7.8 (50). Nathan Brown and George Angelopoulos were integral as Springvale Districts were able to hold Ashwood out. Hampton Park was simply ruthless against Block Rock, claiming a massive 22.19 (151) to 2.8 (20) win at Robert Booth Reserve. Nathan Carver and Shannon Henwood (four goals each) were dominant up forward for Hampton Park, while Michael Henry and Jackson Philpin controlled the game. Endeavour Hills overpowered Hallam from the outset and posted a percentage-boosting win, 3.4 (22) to 26.14 (170). Daniel Morrison was the star of the day, booting 10 majors for the Falcons. Sam

McLean slotted six of his own and Daniel Batson was impressive in the midfield battle. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 8 Lyndhurst took care of business against Sandown, 3.11 (29) to 15.8 (98). Jarryd McGrath (five goals) and Charlie Gardiner (four goals) were dynamic up forward for the Lightning. Dandenong was outplayed by Frankston as the Dolphins ran amok, winning 19.30 (144) to 5.4 (34). Michael Lawrence and Cameron Riley were best in what was a dirty day for the Redlegs. Carrum Patterson Lakes came out firing against Cerberus and were never troubled, winning 14.14 (98) to 4.4 (28). Shane Dunn and Brenton Rafferty were superb for Carrum Patterson Lakes. Meanwhile, Lyndale scored a big win over Moorabbin, 12.9 (81) to 22.9 (141). Moses Faaola and Trent Day (five goals each) were dominant up forward for the Pumas.

Cavaliers keep in touch with big win By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers made it three wins from four outings in Round 11 Big V basketball action on the weekend. The State Championship Men made light work of Blackburn in a dominant display on both ends of the court, winning 104-69. With five players scoring in double figures, the Cavs came to play and were far too good for the Vikings. Raheem Lemons was his usual dominant self, recording 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Matt Donlan was electric from deep, draining five triples on his way to posting 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. The win sees Casey (7-6) return to above .500 for the first time since round five and keeps them in touch with the logjam between third and sixth. The Division 1 Women continued their red hot form and made it six wins on the trot with a smothering defensive display against the Chelsea Gulls. 50 STAR NEWS

After an even first quarter, the Cavs turned up the defensive intensity in the second and held the Gulls to a measly three points for the quarter. From there, the Cavs were never truly troubled again, running out 42-64 winners. Tarryn Wilkin (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Tanarly Hood (14 rebounds, 11 points, 4 assists) were tremendous. Casey's six-game winning streak has them placed second with an impressive 12-2 record. The Youth League 2 Women remain undefeated after 11 rounds, taking all before them, including proving too strong for the fourthplaced Blackburn Vikings on Sunday afternoon. After a tight battle for three quarters, the Cavs dominated the final term to run out 7590 winners. Lauren Tuplin (21 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists) was phenomenal on both ends of the court, while Peta Rhodes (22 points) topscored. Unfortunately, the Youth League 1 Men

were agonizingly close to the Geelong Supercats at home on Sunday, but ultimately fell, 90-92 Supercat Josiah King blocked Oyiti Amum's attempt at a game-winning triple in the final seconds to cap off a dramatic finish to a high quality game of basketball. Despite the heartbreaking finish, Amum (25 points, 8 rebounds) starred for the Cavs and was well supported by Mitch Gooiker (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Alex Bazzucchini (10 points, 7 rebounds). The loss, their fourth in a row, has Casey sitting eighth with a 5-8 record. With no BigV this long weekend, the Cavs return to the hardwood the following week. The Youth League 2 Men will battle Sunbury at home on June 16 from 8pm, before heading to Bendigo a day later. The State Championship Men will also hit the road to face Knox on June 17. Meanwhile, a Youth League 2 and Division 1 Women double-header tips off from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium on June 17.
