Living at Peregian Beach and being a dog owner the overwhelming community response against council officers' removal of dog water containers in the village came as no surprise to me. It's rare to find an outdoor cafe in Peregian Village without a dog lying next to it. And most of time, at least when I've been there, humans and dogs cohabit without a problem. Two things stood out when I asked people on the weekend what they thought of the water bowls. One person said too much attention was paid to the few whingers and not enough to the majority. The other was that we are quick to criticise but not to acknowledgement people who quietly do great things - like the Peregian Angel who has given dogs a drink for

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… FARMERS WANT TO WORK TOGETHER
PEOPLE PRESSURE RETURNS POOCHES’ WATER BOWLS BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was democracy in action last week when council officers removed dog water bowls from Peregian Village on Wednesday and public pressure returned them. Every day for the past 10 years, since obtaining permission from village restaurants, local resident Colleen Schweinfurth has collected, cleaned and refilled plastic water buckets across the village after identifying a need for water for visiting dogs and wildlife, including birds, possums and wallabies, and the scarcity of publicly accessible taps. "Over the years the need for it was so great - the need for animals to get a drink. They depend on us for simple things like a drink of water," she said. "I'm so consistent with it and I make sure they're all clean." Colleen said over the years the initiative had received much praise from locals and visitors. So she was surprised when she was contacted by a council officer who told her all the water containers were to be removed, that people might trip over them, that she needed a permit for them and only shops were allowed to put one out inside the shop door. A council spokesman said officers removed more than 30 plastic containers in response to complaints and in the interests of dog health and the "amenity of the area'. He said officers only removed containers that "were not suitable as pet water bowls as they were either very old, broken and had sharp edges, or they were mouldy or contained algae. "Officers did not remove containers placed near taps, as these are generally flushed out regularly and were mostly in good condition. Nor did council officers remove any of the plastic water bowls put out by shopkeepers for their customers' dogs," he said. Colleen said they "went and removed every one". Colleen petitioned the village following the removal and has been overwhelmed at the public support to reinstate the water containers. On Sunday while the Peregian Market was in full swing there were plenty of plastic dog bowls in the village and plenty of dogs on leashes. Noosa Today asked some what they think of the dog bowls. ●

"What's it to do with the council? It s up to the restaurants. Most of the cafes are quite happy with well behaved dogs." - Wendy, with Hector
"They're a good idea. Much of the time it s so hot at these markets. You expect people to be responsible if you're dog's not friendly." - Katrina, with Tala
"I think it's a great idea to have them. He never drinks from them. We would want to keep them even though he's fussy." - Kim, with Billy
"It's absolutely perfect. We come to this market because we can bring the dog. I think (the dog bowls) are a good idea." - Johnnie, with Suki
A key outcome of a 12 month study initiated by Country Noosa shows agricultural businesses in Noosa hinterland want to collaborate to grow their businesses. The Rural Enterprise Program last month held four workshops in its bid to determine the needs of agricultural businesses in Noosa hinterland. The program funded by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation aims to determine how land is being used in the hinterland and to identify enterprise opportunities. Project manager Nicole Duguid said there had been a lot of discussion on what people were doing and wanted to do and a survey being conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast until July would provide more data. She said people wanted to know how to collaborate with others and were interested in gaining more information on marketing, processing and distribution. The establishment of an agricultural hub has also been discussed. Nicole said initial feedback had also indicated there was a demand for more information on issues from weed and pest control to what grows best in the region. "A lot of people are looking at lifestyle sustainable farming," she said. Small crop farming, high value crops, wellness food and medicinal herbs have been identified as businesses of interest. "People have smaller lots of land and are looking to gain high value produce," she said. "Tourism and short term accommodation and getting people from the beach to the hinterland was also of interest." Nicole said more workshops were planned for later in the year to continue to discuss future rural land use as well as new opportunities for diversification and scenario planning. She said the outcome would include fact sheets for farmers to use and a report would be compiled. For more information about the program or to complete the survey visit www. countrynoosa.com ● 201721004-LB21-17

RIGHT PLACE
RIGHT TIME BY RON LANE rom the quite dignified atmosphere of a school room in Scotland to the harsh realities of a Royal Marines Commando Training School in England was in the words of Donald McKill, ''A rude awakening.'' Born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1958 Donald was educated at the local George Watson College and in 1976 after completing grade 10 immediately joined the Royal Marines basic training camp in Lympstone England. "Like I said it was a rude awakening; they (the instructors) were there to make you or break you. It took twelve months to qualify for the Green Beret and on average, out of 50 volunteers maybe 10 or 12 would make the grade." On completion of his basic training he was sent to 45 Commando Group based in Arbroath North Scotland where he underwent training in Artic Warfare."Every January we were sent to
F
Norway in the Arctic Circle for four months for advanced training in extreme conditions; on a normal day it would be, minus 20 or 22 degrees; you had to live in the open dig in and set up your fox holes. Our reason for training there was that it was the end of the cold war period and we did not know what to expect from the Russians." Apart from Norway Donald also saw service in Germany, Denmark and Holland. Then in 1980 he finally left the British Forces and travelled to Kenya South Africa. While there he worked in security and also kept up his love of rugby (which he developed in high school) playing games in such places as Nairobi and Cape Town. Then in 1984 after returning home to Scotland, Donald bought into a wellestablished family hardware and timber business, a business which he was to run successfully for the next 20 yrs. Also on returning home he had continued his Rugby, playing for the local club. Following this in 93 Donald met and fell
in love with attractive young Scottish lass named Miffy and a year later they married. They are now the proud parents of three children. "We have a son Charlie 23 who has returned to Scotland to play Rugby, Ellie 22 who is doing her nursing degree in Brisbane and Zoe 17 who is in year 12 at St Andrews College. Three great kids of whom we are very proud." However it was during the 95 season that his rugby career came to an end. It happened during a club game; a scrum collapsed and he suffered what was termed a broken neck. "I finished the game but realised something was not right; I started to get a funny feeling in the arms and a tingling in the fingers. So I went to our emergency people and following medical procedures they found the trouble; it was damage revolving around the C 3 and C 4 vertebras. So unfortunately at age 38 my playing days were over." As they say in life when one door shuts another opens. When Donald's playing days
finished and his role as a supporter of the game became a passion, he visited Australia in 2001 as members of the Lions support group and had occasion to visit a beautiful tourist resort called Noosa Heads "I visited again in 2003 for the Rugby World Cup: I loved the place, decided this was it and in January/February 2005, after discussions with the family, (Miffy had visited in 2004,) we shifted. It was a big change in lifestyle for all of us but we loved it,"said Donald. On settling into Noosa Donald and Miffy joined the Dolphins Rugby club and also enrolled the children in the Noosa Nippers. "With such a change in lifestyle doing these things was indeed a big help in settling into the way of life. A great move for the whole family." Once they had settled Donald began working for Ray Brown at Fit Noosa as a personal trainer and as both were exMilitary it worked well; they then went on to start a series of very successful Boot Camps in Noosa.

The British and Irish Lions took over Main Beach Noosa.
In the Noosa Nippers Donald became an age manager working with Carolyn Lansdowne (JAC Chairperson) for several years. During this time he also obtained his bronze medallion and was eventually appointed Patrol Captain. He also put his hand up to start fitness programs for the members and also became involved in the surf awareness programs working with Greg McLaughlin club Education Manager. Perhaps his proudest involvement has been working with the Noosa Seahorse Nippers an organization he joined when Steve and Nicki Mawby formed the group some six years ago. "To watch those little kids with special needs come to the beach and involve themselves is very heartwarming; and also to see the junior lifesaving working as helpers along with the seniors is a great moral booster for the senior club. What the Mawbys and their supporters have achieved is incredible." However Donalds love of working with youth in need doesn't stop there. While taking part in the Noosa Triathlon he met a lady named Suzie O'Neil (not the famous Olympian) and started working for the K.I.D.S.Foundation; an organisation formed to help, as the name implies, Kids In Dangerous Situations. One of the most heart wrenching charity functions for K.I.D.S. occurred one evening in 2016 when Donald joined with Suzie O, Neil on the verandah of the Noosa Surf Club. "To mingle with children carrying scars from multiple burns and acts of adult violence was unforgettable. It took a while
but as the evening progressed the children relaxed and began to talk and mix. A simple, hullo young man or lady, followed by a hand shake was all that some needed." When it was announced that a charity bike ride from Coffs Harbor to Noosa was being organized several guests signed upthus making it a night to remember. Being an ex-serviceman another charity that is close to Donalds heart has been to help organize the international golf tournaments for the British Battle Back Handicapped Veterans. They visited Noosa on two occasions, the first being in 2015 and the second 2017. On the first they challenged the Aussie veterans known as the Mates 4 Mates and the second saw them up against Soldier On. On both occasions functions were ably supported by senior Noosa Life Savers some of whom were Vietnam Veterans. Since moving to Noosa his love of Rugby has never faltered. During the winter months and sometimes overlapping into the summer, he now fulfills his duties as President of the Dolphins Rugby Union Club; his 2017 appointment to this position followed on his three years as Vice President. During his early years he became involved in helping to establish the Noosa 7 Rugby Program. As a result of this he was invited by Mike O'Connor coach of the Australian 7s to work as a players liaison officer, an office he held through to and including the 2018 Commonwealth Games. ''Amongst our many success stories has been the great work by Rob Frey and his
Donald with the British and Irish Lions.
support group in consolidating our Junior Programs. These people along with others are doing wonders not just for us but also Rugby in general. Also on the list of new programs has been the introduction of girls and women's rugby competition; and again our administrators and supporters are doing a great job to make this new concept a success. The Dolphins is a great club having won 17 premierships in 36 years and there have been many outstanding achievements from coaches, players and most important our support groups. And of course the support we get from our local business community is definitely second to none.'' In the year 2012 Australia was on the verge of a financial crisis and Noosa along with other communities was starting to feel the effects. However it was during this year that Australia received a visit from the management section of the British and Irish Lions Rugby Union. The reason for the visit was to check -out possible locations for training and accommodation for their forth coming tour; a tour which would include a three Tests series against the Wallabies. With some delegates being Scottish and known to Donald, he on behalf of the Noosa Dolphins was authorized to extended an invitation to visit our town and inspect possible accommodation and the Dolphins Rugby Training facilities. ''We took them for an aerial view of the town and beaches plus a visit to Dolphins Club. This was followed by a luncheon on the verandah of the Noosa Surf Club; and
with Noosa at its best plus the total support of Damien Messingham and his team at Tourism Noosa, it was soon a done deal.'' Not only a great achievement for Dolphins but also great advertisement for the resort of Noosa. Financially it could have not come at a better time; this was community team work (Dolphins, Tourism Noosa and Surf Club) at its best. ''However when the Lions arrived at the Maroochydore Airport in July to be welcomed by our President Chris Burton, they were on a downer after having lost the second Test to Australia 16-15. This had the series at one Test each so to win the third and final one was vital.'' When they settled in and visited our surf beach and then started to train at Dolphins their moral went through the roof. The rest is now history. A resounding win to the Lions 41-16. Unbeknown to many the choice of Noosa as a training base was not well received back home by the British press. "Why this place called Noosa?" However head Lions Coach Warren Gatland said, "The environment and training venue at Noosa was the right place and right time. And the results speak for themselves." As we sat and talked several things about this quietly spoken man became apparent. His demure in helping children, his belief in working for the community, his great love for the Dolphins, their people and the game of Rugby; but above all the love and pride he has for his family Through summer and winter Donald McKill is definitely a man for all seasons. â—?

NEWS THANKS RFS VOLUNTEERS
Fire destroyed everything in its path.
Houses were reduced to ashes.
The Hancock's rebuild nears completion.
RISING FROM THE ASHES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Ten months after fire tore through three Noosa North Shore homes residents are in the process of rebuilding with one nearing completion. Mike Hancock said he and wife Lyn almost walked away and sold their land but the kindness of the community and the beauty of the area caused them to stay. "It's not a pleasant thing to have your house burn down," Mike said. "But once you've lived over here you realise it's a wonderful world. It's a real tight little community. No one bothers you but they're there when you need them." Mike who is the area's Rural Fire Service (RFS) chief officer said there had been some positive outcomes from
the event. He said there had been a series of meetings with council to discuss disaster management on north shore though there was no getting around the time needed by emergency services to cross the river. He said RFS managed bush fires not house fires and mitigation measures had been undertaken before the house fires took place but the management of bushland had no impact on the fire that began in a neighbour's house then leapt from one to another. When the fire occurred the stars had all lined up in the wrong way, Mike said. "There was a big wind, it was dry and no one was home," he said. "It just raced through quickly. It took (firefighters) 25 minutes to get there and by that time
two houses were gone and the third engulfed." Mike praised his wife's stoic attitude who on seeing the house in ashes said "we've had worse". He said the couple knew real hurt when they lost their son of natural causes when he was 22 years old and a painting of him which perished in the fire remains an item most missed. On the plus side Mike said having lived in the same place for 18 years the couple were able to redesign their new house to better take advantage of the sun and wind directions. He said the builder, Hamilton Construct, had gone out of their way to make the process bearable, even transporting materials by boat to save the ferry costs. ●
Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers are being praised for their efforts during RFS Week from 3-9 June. Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford urged Queenslanders to thank them for giving up their time to serve and protect the community," Mr Crawford said. "As a former Victorian volunteer firefighter, I know members of the RFS perform their work not for recognition or reward, they do it because they love it. "Many take time away from their jobs and loved ones to help their community when it's needed most, so it's only fitting we all take some time to thank them." ●
WATER BATTERY TO SAVE EMISSIONS The University of the Sunshine Coast recently unveiled plans for a giant “water battery” run by solar panels to be operational early 2019 in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2025. Project partner Veolia will build, install and operate 5,800 rooftop solar panels and a 4.5 megalitre water storage tank at USC’s main campus at Sippy Downs to cool water for air conditioning. It is expected to save more than 92 thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions over 25 years, equivalent to the carbon emissions of 525 average Australian houses for the same period. Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said 60 per cent of their energy was used for chilling water for air-conditioning, so their Asset Management Services team and Veolia came up with a way to harness solar energy for cooling water and storing it. ●

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
VEGETATION MANAGEMENT BILL 2018 THE ANSWER OR A QUESTION?
As well, it will alleviate the intense pressure unfairly put on our farmers and farming sector, whose demonization has been uncalled for and is very un-Australian. They need our support, not our judgement, as does our natural environment and its furry,
feathered and scaled inhabitants. During this time we could also look at our decision making processes. As a thinking and progressive State we should ask - is our future to be one of 'top down' approaches instead of 'grassroots up' that
we speak of as necessary for long term solutions? And what does legislation that 'blankets' our State do to communities who seek customisation and self-determination to achieve their endeavours? As a proactive society we should probe our predisposition to seek the sanctity of increased legislation and regulations versus targeted prosecution to deal with offenders. This debate, as with others, raises the importance of working together. Without a future bipartisan agreement, our farming sector and natural environment may continue to be in a state of upheaval as has been seen since 1999 with changes in government bringing about subsequent changes in laws. Both need surety and support through respectful negotiation 'around the table' as a way forward, not fodder for Facebook or political gain. Good, long term outcomes can only be achieved by a united agreement, and it is time to put aside the anger and accusations. That one Bill can raise so many questions should be considered a positive and I hope these, and many others in the coming months, become lively conversations at your dinner table or in your own deliberations? Until next month â—? Warm regards Sandy
12389689-RC24-18
After months of research, discussions and a three-day debate in Parliament, the vote on this Bill was not an easy one. With farmers in my family going back to the 1800's, I understood the intense hardships of country life, and had seen the negative impacts 20 years of see sawing laws have had on our farming families and the environment. I also understood that the current status quo was not tenable. Arguments from both sides of the house were relevant, researched and often cut to the core of who we are, what we do and how do we do it. Many questions were raised surrounding the farming economy and its future, the accuracy of statistics, and the rights of all landholders, not just farmers. How does any landholder feel when their property is devalued through a decision taken for the betterment of all? This was debated passionately, and rightfully so. As I said during my speech, statistics, whichever way you read them, or from whatever angle you look at them, showed clearly that action was required. This legislation will provide much needed breathing space to halt the clearing rates, investigate questions raised during debate, obtain improved accuracy through expanded SLATS, and work with our farmers to increase viability and productivity through innovative options.

STAKES HIGH AT CWA CONTEST BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was serious business last month when Tewantin-Noosa Country Women's Association Queensland (CWAQ) held its competition to determine the top contenders across a range of traditional skills from cooking to croquet and photography. The Tewantin CWA hall was filled with expectation as judges deliberated and made their decisions. Winners from competitions held across more than 200 branches are judged statewide at the CWAQ conference in October. â—? Caroline McNaughton handing out the goodies.

GIFT OF GRACE Noosa Heads Year 6 student Grace Burroughs spent last year busking to raise money for refugee children in Africa and will compete again this weekend at the Noosa National Busking Championship for the same cause. Through her school the Good Shepherd Lutheran College Grace learnt about the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS), the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and wanted to contribute personally. Grace's passion for singing and performing enabled her to raise $460 by busking at the local farmers market. She was "blown away" by the generosity of the Noosa community who responded to her performance with their donations. Her work led ALWS to invite her to be part of their "Kids who change the world" video and to become an ALWS ambassador. Performing has also helped Grace by building her confidence. Grace last year won second place at both the Noosa Busking Championship and The Australian National Glee Championship. It will be a big weekend for Grace who will compete in the busking competition and celebrate her 11th birthday. Her mother Angelika said instead of having a party she has asked people to donate to refugee children. Any prize
AS TIME GOES BY Internationally collected, Hinterland artist, Kaya Sulc this week announced select pieces of his private collection are now open to buyers. The 87-year-old, Cooroy-based sculptor and painter made the decision based on the overwhelming reception to his current exhibition, 'As Time Goes By.' A retrospective of his work over the past 50 years, the show is 60 paintings and sculptures from his private collection. The overwhelming response to his show prompted a rethink, for the artist. "It takes a lot of work to sell a painting. It's like parting with a piece of myself, "Mr Sulc said. "Like one of my children are leaving ... I've been overwhelmed by the interest everyone has had in my work. And a sale, for me is about the work being appreciated." In response to the success of the exhibition, BFAC is hosting a closing event for 'As Time Goes By'. A chance to meet the artist, purchase his work and hear some of the stories behind his unforgettable pieces. The night begins 5pm, Friday 15 June and runs until 6.30pm. All welcome. â—?

NEWS TASTING HOMELESSNESS
Luke Youlden will be the star attraction at the Noosa Hill Climb.
BATHURST CHAMPION HITS HILL Racing cars from the 1920s through to today are set to tackle the fearsome Noosa Hill Climb this weekend. Star attraction will be reigning Bathurst 1000 champion Luke Youlden, who co-drove with David Reynolds to victory at Mt Panorama last year. Youlden will be tackling the notoriously difficult hill climb in a $150,000 Audi RS4 Avant, which hits 100kmh in just 4.1-seconds, so is sure to be one of the very fastest at Noosa. Youlden will join a long line of notable drivers attracted to the Noosa Hill Climb over its 21 years. Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan, Kevin Bartlett, Dick Johnson, Steve Johnson and Glenn Seaton have all graced the 14 corner, 1.5km track through Tewantin's State forest. Also coming to the hill climb this year is a celebration of muscle cars.
There will be some big engined, noisy and crowd-pleasing racers including a 1964 Ford Mustang, 1969 Ford Falcon GT 1989 Chevrolet Corvette and a 1972 Holden Torana GTR XU-1, as well as more modern muscle such as a 2002 Maserati 4200 and a Jaguar XK8. Over 140 racing cars are expected to take the start line, ranging from a near century-old Austin 7 through to a modern Nissan GT-R, Lotus Exige and a range of open-wheel hill climb specials. In between is a mix of 1960s Ford Mustangs, Holden Toranas and Commodores, Subaru Impreza WRXs, classic Alfa Romeos and Porsches and even open-wheeler tribute Formula 1, Formula 2 and Indy 500 winners. Cars are divided into numerous classes and launched up Tewantin's Gyndier Drive at approximately 30-second intervals. The drivers race
against the clock up the 1.5-kilometre climb, with spectators able to enjoy the action from grandstands and numerous other vantage points along the route. An open pit lane also gives spectators the chance to see the racing cars up close and talk to drivers as they wait for their next run. A pre-event street parade and car display will be held from 4.30pm on Friday June 8 along Hastings St, Noosa Heads. Many competing cars will be on show to give locals and visitors a taste of the racing to come. Racing starts at 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday June 9 and 10 with tickets available at the gate each day. Access to the start and main pit area is from the bottom of Gyndier Drive off NoosaCooroy Rd. Cost $15, children under 14 free. Visit noosacarclub.com.au ●
Noosa District State High School students had a glimpse into life sleeping rough on the weekend when they slept on cardboard boxes in basic and cold conditions at the school's Minburi campus in the Mary Valley. A school spokeswoman said the event has been run by the school for the past four consecutive years, with this year's event attracting the largest contingent with 80 participants. More than $3,700 was raised by the students who were sponsored to attend. The students played board games and enjoyed other activities including dancing to keep warm and the Cooroy Rotary Club provided soup for the students' dinner, with many then retreating to the bonfire to toast marshmallows. The students managed well with no complaints and they left the camp on Saturday with a greater appreciation for their warm bed and gratitude for all that they have, the spokeswoman said. ●

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has debunked the notion Noosa Council is behind a proposal to reopen an abattoir at Eumundi. He said Noosa Council had received around 20 printed postcards, headed 'Noosa Country Slaughter' and featuring a pair of bloody hands on the front, complaining about a project to investigate the reopening of the Eumundi abattoir, but Noosa Council had no role to play in any consideration of the Eumundi abattoir. "Indeed, Noosa Council has no policy or position on the Eumundi facility being reopened, and nor are we taking any action in this regard," he said. "Of course the former abattoir is not in Noosa Shire, so the ability of our Council to directly influence the matter is zero." Cr Wellington said Country Noosa had received an Economic Development grant from Council towards the investigation of a yearling beef project in the Noosa hinterland. "The research project by Country Noosa was part-funded because it aligns with Council's overarching aim of broadening the local economy, in this case through consideration of agricultural opportunities," he said. "Country Noosa is an independent incorporated association with the purpose of promoting sustainable rural enterprises. Inevitably, when considering cattle
Who's beef: Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington with campaign postcards. production, the issue of processing must be addressed. But that is a matter for Country Noosa to consider as part of the research project, not Noosa Council. "Noosa Council does not direct Country Noosa, and nor does the Council have any specific involvement in the substance of their research. "Any consideration of reopening the Eumundi abattoir is a matter for the property owner and, if a development approval is required, the Sunshine Coast Council is the relevant Council." Country Noosa president Martin Duncan said the yearling beef project was still being investigated and while there was a lot of incorrect information circulating about it the results would be made public at its conclusion. â—?

"Remember you are in control of your future" financial expert Noel Whittaker told the Planning for Retirement Seminar organised by the Noosa Branch of the Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) in Noosaville last month. Addressing the topic "Facing the Challenges of a Changing World" Mr Whittaker told a full house of guests there would need to be changes to the tax system to cover costs of our ageing population. To stress the importance of more Australians funding their own retirement Mr Whittaker referred to The Department of Social Services Intergenerational Report which states that in 2015-16 there were 4.5 people of working age for every person aged 65 or older whereas in 205455 there will be only 2.7 people of working age for every person of 65 or over. "We need to start planning for retirement long before the actual event," he said, but "over 80 per cent of Australians are disengaged with superannuation." In addition to finances maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle was also vital, he said. The seminar also heard from Centrelink financial information service officer Dan Stevens. He told attendees they should plan for retirement not just a pension. Ask yourself, "do I have the financial resources for the lifestyle I want?" he said. Focusing on the challenges women face in retirement McGregor Wealth associate director Chloe Ward said: "A man is not a plan." "Women, whether single or in a relationship, need to improve their financial literacy," she said. "Don't wait until it is critical - ensure that you at least know what to do and who to contact regarding financial matters. If in a relationship make sure that both members know passwords, account numbers and so on." AIR national president Allan Marshall urged people to become members of not-for-profit, non-political group, AIR, to become better informed about the changing government rules relating to superannuation. "The Noosa Branch has served the local community for over 26 years and is the largest branch in Queensland," he said. The next general meeting will be at the South Pacific Resort, 179 Weyba Road, Noosaville at 9:45 for 10 am start on Thursday 14 June with guest speaker Senator James McGrath. Email airnoosacommunications@gmail.com or phone 5455 6790 for more information. ● noosatoday.com.au

Thanks to Phil Brown from Noosaville for this Winter Warmer! "I took this sunset photo looking up the beach to The Groyne, Hasting Street, Noosa Heads. BEST CONCERT EVER Last week I was lucky enough to get a ticket before the 'sold out’ sign went up for the Bob Dylan birthday show at the Majestic Theatre Pomona. It was the best concert of this kind I have ever attended. The musicians were all local, from all round the Sunshine Coast and aged from about 20 to 70. There was so much talent it was incredible, with at least 20 different acts. They sang their various interpretations of Bob Dylan’s songs and the audience had an absolute smorgasbord of good musicians to enjoy. It was a really lovely community event. I met lots of new people who had travelled from far afield to be there from Gympie, Maleny, Nambour, Caloundra, Bli Bli, Noosa and even Brisbane. One of the performers, Barry Charles had family from Melbourne come up too. The volunteers at the Majestic Theatre are doing a magnificent job of revitalising this wonderful theatre. I picked up a program of all the events coming up and it really is the place to go for a night out. Well done to everyone who contributed to this awesome event. Keep up the good work at the Majestic. I look forward to the next one. Very impressed. Jenny Smidt, Noosa
THE POWER OF LOVE There are still a lot of people talking about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding. One of the most memorable parts from the wedding was Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon during the ceremony. Bishop Curry’s lengthy sermon seemed to go on for a while, but there was one strong main message - the power of love. “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way," Bishop Curry said.
Thursday, 7 June, 2018
There is no greater power than love. Love can heal the world. Love is pure and decent, innocent and true. There is the in love feeling we feel towards a beloved. Then, there is the love of our selves. Curry mentioned in his speech that “we must discover the power of love”. Love is all around us, and unfortunately, many people in the world cannot seem to find it or feel it but love is not always romantic. The world these days is in desperate need of love. If you look at the present state of the earth, its environment, recent disasters and school massacres, love is an important part of healing and overcoming the terrible things in the world. When disaster strikes and there is a lot of pain in the world, we need to come and love one another and support each other. Love is one of the most important tools that we should use in today’s world. Following the recent school shootings in Florida, and the most recent in Texas, it is important to remember to get together and show our love to help heal the broken hearts that are ripped apart by tragedy. The fact is, love is all around us and we need to learn how to love each other no matter what, because the power of love is very strong. Like Prince Harry loving Meghan Markle, we can love each other too. The bond of love is something special that cannot be broken. Carolyn Medloby, Noosa Yr 12 student
REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS ISSUES SCRC’s independent Projex Partners review of the Doonan Bridge Road, Verrierdale, upgrade design has finally been received by Verrierdale Residents Group (VRG), after repeated requests, via MP Dan Purdie. It confirms VRG’s concerns that council’s constructed sharp corner is substandard, unsafe and testing the limits of acceptable design. Guard rails in stage three are excessive. VRG’s proposed sweeping corner design
was recommended by council’s and VRG’s two independent reviewers over council’s design. The first option design was rejected by the Kabi Kabi. SCRC’s construction has far more cons and less pro’s than VRG’s preferred largeradius option. Why did council refuse to forward their review to VRG, despite repeated requests? How will council justify its actions to any future inquiry into why this information was withheld from ratepayers? Why has council determined to construct an unsafe and substandard corner, when VRG’s design was recommended by all reviewers? The reviews found guard rails were inconsistent with surrounding roads and with stage one of the upgrade. Driver expectations will be affected, and wildlife crossing locations may be affected. This is residents’ experience to date. Projex Partners recommend a risk assessment (Austroads) comparing the risk of impacting hazards versus risk of impacting a guardrail. Mark Jones, Vice-President, Verrierdale Residents Group
DISAPPOINTED IN BARNABY A suggestion for Barnaby Joyce and Vikki Campion when they hand over the $150,000 from the trust set aside for Sebastian give him a copy of the Channel 7 Interview. He will then, like all the viewers that watched it, see he was an accident and his mum had to listen to his father on national TV repeatedly insist he was a mistake and ruined his father's career. You are a disappointment Barnaby and Vikki had to remind you she is also an adult. Treat her as one, with a bit more respect. Ernest Wright, Sunrise Beach noosatoday.com.au

Q & A WITH JEREMY GILMORE MEET Jeremy Gilmore, state manager for 360 Property Group, and leader of the Parkridge Noosa sales team. Based in Noosa, Jeremy has 17 years of experience in the real estate industry, including selling property across West Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. He reveals insights into the 360 Property Group and Parkridge Noosa in our quick Q&A. however with the change in marketplace and buyer profiles we have expanding into areas further from the CBD, or regionally like Noosa, which provide better opportunities for our clients.
Q. What projects have you sold in the past? A. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the largest property developers in Australia, including Australand, Hamton, Icon, Gurner and Becton. 360 Property Group has sold over 18,000 apartments across Australia. One of our more recent projects included the sale of 918 units in Fortitude Valley for Gurner.
Q. What’s your greatest sales achievement? A. In 2014 I moved to Brisbane to take on the FV apartment project, by Gurner, which included three towers with 918 apartments. We sold these within nine months - including two months of down time over Christmas. It was a great product and we are really proud of this achievement.

Q. Where have these projects been located? A. The initial focus of 360 Property group was CBD and surrounding apartments,

Q. How does the design of Parkridge Noosa stack up to other projects you have sold? A. Parkridge is one of the more luxurious projects I have worked on. We constantly get great feedback on the attention to detail in our display suite, which has been delivered by the architects. It makes it a pleasure to sell. Q. What makes Parkridge Noosa so unique? A. Parkridge is one of the most unique

The sheer fact that it really is the last piece of substantial land in Noosa and the last opportunity to buy a brand new home is certainly helping to generate strong buyer interest.
Q. What sort of feedback do buyers give you about Parkridge Noosa? A. I am yet to find a buyer that has not loved the finishes and standard of the project.
Q. Where are the Parkridge buyers coming from? A. The largest portion of buyers in Parkridge have come from Noosa. These buyers are either downsizing or trying to

Q. Why did 360 Property Group relocate to Queensland? A. Initially we started looking at Queensland as our larger clients from Melbourne were looking at sites and wanted our feedback. From there we found a gap in the market for our broad range of services. The real estate market in Queensland has some real upsides, which is important for our clients.

NINE WAYS TO ADD WARMTH
NOOSA PROPERTY BOOMS
WINTER has come to Noosa, bringing with it spectacular sunny days, but some chilly temperatures too. There are plenty of things you can try to take the edge off the cool season and add some warmth to your home this winter. 1. FABULOUS FLOOR COVERINGS Polished timber and spectacular stone or tile flooring is beautiful, and does a great job of keeping your home cool through the Queensland summer, but when winter comes around who wants to get out of bed and stop onto the freezing floor? Put down a warm rug to help stop the heat from escaping from right under your feet. There’s never been a better excuse to splurge on floor decor.
RUG UP: Throw down a rug to warm up your timber floors this winter.
2. HEATED TOWEL RAILS AND HEAT LAMPS The hardest part of winter can be stepping out of the bath or shower and into the cold, but there are some bathroom innovations that can take the edge off. Nothing beats the feeling of wrapping up in a cosy towel warmed through by a heated towel rack. If it’s really cold at your place consider installing heat lamps that will bathe you in warmth from the moment you switch them on. 3. WARM TONES Adding warm colours to your spaces can create a cosy feeling. Consider introducing red, yellow, orange, gold and timber tones to boost the feeling of warmth in your home through paint or decorator items like cushions, throws, ornaments and wall art. 4. DO AWAY WITH DRAUGHTS Keep draughts at bay by ensuring your windows are fully sealed and find funky ways to stop the draughts at the door. Look out for insulating tape to shore up
AS THE Noosa and Sunshine Coast property markets continue to boom, new statistics from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland reveal the value of a typical house has increased by $31,250 in the past year. The median house price in Noosa (as of March) reached $665,000, the REIQ’s Queensland Market Monitor report, released on Monday, revealed. Noosa house prices were generally $100,000 higher than those on the Sunshine Coast, which reached an annual median price of $563,000. Noosa continued to have the most expensive unit market in Queensland, with prices growing a stunning 7.1 per cent in the past year to an annual median price of $525,000. The report showed general sale volumes fell by 12 per cent across the region in the past year. “Market trend indicators showed characteristics of a market wherein supply is falling and demand is increasing, supporting the upward pressure on prices,” the report read. The rental market continued to be “very challenging” for renters looking for accommodation. Vacancy rates in Noosa were very tight, at just 0.8 per cent, and it had the most expensive rental market for three-bedroom townhouses, with a median weekly rent of $508. ●
window and door seals. A door snake might sound like something from your grandmother’s house, but if you choose the right design for your hose you won’t even notice it’s there, except for the lack of draught. 5. FINISHING TOUCH Who says throw rugs are just there to make the room look cosy? Winter is the perfect time to drape throw rugs across the sofa, the end of the bed, your favourite outdoor arm chair, and use them too. There’s nothing better than curling up under a blanket and relaxing with a good book or Netflix. 6. ARE YOU INSULATED? Did you know up to 25 per cent of heat can be lost through your home’s roof? And up to a third of the heat in an uninsulated home is lost through the walls? Luckily that can be easily addressed by installing insulation. Save yourself on heating costs by keeping the warmth inside. 7. WHAT ABOUT WINDOWS? Lots of warmth escapes from your
home through the windows. If you’ve got curtains or blinds, close them before it gets dark and keep the daytime’s warmth inside through the night. When the morning comes throw them open and soak up the sun’s heat. 8. TURN UP THE HEAT When is the last time you had your heating system serviced or your fire’s chimney swept? Looking after your heating systems means they work more efficiently for you and last longer. And who wants to find themselves with a broken heater in the middle of winter? 9. BAKE OFF Dreaming of a crackling roast dinner, beautiful baked pumpkin scones or a hearty casserole? The cooler months are the perfect time to fire up the oven and get baking. You end up with nourishing meals and delicious treats, plus the added advantage of the oven’s warmth heating the kitchen. ●

Cosi by Louis Nowra is one of Australia's most successful plays - a story of madness, illusion, sanity and theatre. The Noosa Arts Theatre are putting an audition call out to all the actors out there who see themselves on stage for this iconic show. In a mental institution in 1971, Lewis, a young director, takes on the task of mounting a production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte. Outside the derelict theatre, protests are being staged against the Vietnam war, whilst inside Lewis is learning a valuable life lesson about chasing your dreams and how it helps to be a little crazy. Are you interested in playing a part? Auditions for Cosi are on Saturday 16 June at 2pm at Noosa Arts Theatre. They are seeking both male and females aged from 20 to 70 years of age, for a variety of roles - 7 males from 20 - 60 years of age and 4 females from 20 - 50 years of age. The Director is Jane Rivers who directed many successful shows including Jack of Hearts, The 39 Steps, Caravan, Quartet. Cosi's three week season will commence 13 September and run until 29 September with 11 performances in all. Rehearsals will be on Tuesday and Thursday nights with some Sunday afternoons. For more information please check out their website; www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or contact Jane Rivers directly on 5485 3509. Go on, take the plunge and audition this might just be your big break! ●

KOKODA CHALLENGES MIND AND BODY Runners from St Andrew's College, Peregian Springs beat almost 100 teams to win the 48km Kokoda Challenge and claim the title for the second year in a row. College director of sport Steve Robson said 174 runners entered the challenge with of 15km, 30km and 48km as part of the amazing Kokoda Challenge, with a special mention to Mr Austin, Will, Max, Harry and Luca (Year 8) who won the 48km event in seven hours ahead of 98 teams.
"This is the ninth year we have competed as a College and it never fails to disappoint," he said. "It is tough, it is a challenge, it tests you mentally and physically - but it gives you so much. The brilliant Kokoda Challenge is full of the unexpected, unplanned and unprepared for. You can't control some things but you can control your responses to these things." "Importantly thousands of dollars are raised for charity to support young people." ●

Killer Under A Blood Moon, by Dan Sultan
How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life, by Lilly Singh
Gringo - MA15+
Dan Sultan steps up his already-powerful musicianship with the release of Killer Under A Blood Moon. Infusing hip hop into My Kingdom brings a powerful new side to the gripping tale thanks to an almighty collaboration with AB Original. If this song alone doesn't win some sort of award, we have some questions. Reaction is completely reinvigorated with the help of Meg Mac, who adds an extra emotional element to the story with the pair singing collaboratively about a relationship breakdown. Sultan also teams up with Camp Cope for Killer, setting the song on fire with Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich and Sarah Thompson's drums and bass. Guitarist and vocalist Georgia Maq's softer vocal approach still oozes that epic emotion. ●
Combining dark comedy with dramatic intrigue, Gringo joyrides across the border into Mexico, where all is not as it seems for mild-mannered American businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo). Crossing the line from citizen to criminal, Harold tangles with duplicitous business partners, Mexican drug lords, international mercenaries, and the DEA. As he attempts to survive in one of the most dangerous places on earth, the question lingers: is this ordinary man in way over his head, or is he two steps ahead? Directed by Nash Edgerton, who made his feature length directorial debut with the acclaimed Australian thriller The Square, Gringo also stars Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron. ●
From actress, comedian, and YouTube sensation Lilly Singh (aka ||Superwoman||) comes the definitive guide to being a bawse - a person who exudes confidence, reaches goals, gets hurt efficiently, and smiles genuinely because they've fought through it all and made it out the other side. Told in her hilarious, bold voice that's inspired over nine million fans, and using stories from her own life to illustrate her message, Lilly proves that there are no shortcuts to success. WARNING: This book does not include hopeful thoughts, lucky charms, and cute quotes. That's because success, happiness, and everything else you want in life needs to be fought for - not wished for. ●

A PEARL OF A SHOW
CHOIR WITH A DIFFERENCE
Pearl Jam was one of the first bands to be involved in the grunge movement of the 1990's. As frontrunners, the band is remembered by audiences across the generations and known to current generations as one of the greats. Despite the band's unusual practices, such as refusing to give interviews or to create 'proper' music videos, Pearl Jam has sold nearly 60 million records worldwide. In 2017, as soon as the band became eligible, Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To date, Pearl Jam has released a total of 10 complete albums and have inspired several generations throughout their almost-30-year reign. "Alive: The Pearl Jam Show" is one tribute that truly does justice to the original masters. Mark Hennessey and his commanding stage presence truly honour Eddie Vedder's rich baritone.
Sound Crowd is a community choir (for 18 years +) held on the second Wednesday of every month in The Brewery, Imperial Hotel Eumundi. The next one is on Wednesday 13 June where you, the audience, become the choir for the night! Sound Crowd Director Analiese Long says the contemporary choir gives everyone a chance to sing well-known, well-loved songs with a drink in hand and mates around. "Everyone can sing, and it's even more fun in a group," says Analiese "And there is nothing like a choir to help you hit the high notes!" "This is an inclusive event and we welcome everyone - experienced singers as well as those of us who happily belt out a song in the shower or car with the music turned up loud!", she says. There is no preparation required by cho-

Your guides for the evening will teach you one song in an hour and a half, with the group all performing it together at the end of the night. Take the main vocal or try out some harmonies. The cost is just $10 at the door and the evening will be photographed/filmed so you'll get the chance to see/share the Sound Crowd magic after the night too! ●

METHOD STEP 1 If making fresh pasta: Place flour in a mound on a work surface. Make a large well in the centre, then break eggs into it. Using a fork, gently beat eggs, while, with your other hand, secure the walls of the well. Continue stirring with the fork, drawing in flour until mixture is very thick, then, using your hands, work in remaining flour. STEP 2 Once flour is incorporated, knead the dough (it should be firm and not sticky) for 5 minutes or until smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and set aside for 30 minutes. STEP 3 Divide dough into 6 pieces. Flatten 1 piece with your hand until 3mm thick. Dust lightly with flour. For machine-rolled pasta (for hand-rolled method, see tip), set your pasta machine to its widest setting, then feed the dough through 4-5 times, folding it in half
each time and turning it 90 degrees until it is smooth and the width of the machine. Repeat feeding the dough through, without folding, narrowing the settings on your machine, 1 notch at a time (the highest number being the thinnest setting), until you reach the second last setting, then place pasta sheet on a semolina-dusted work surface. Repeat with remaining dough. For ravioli, once you have rolled out 2 pasta sheets, fill immediately, so dough remains pliable. STEP 4 For machine-cut pasta, drape pasta lengths over a clean broom handle, railing or opened cupboard door for 10 minutes or until slightly dry. Feed dough lengths, 1 at a time, through cutting attachment on your pasta machine, then scatter lightly with semolina and place on a tray. STEP 5 To make pasta sauce: Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add breadcrumbs and cook, stirring continuously, for 2 minutes or until golden, then remove from pan. Wipe pan clean. STEP 6 Heat remaining oil, garlic and chillies in cleaned pan over low heat for 2 minutes or until oil is hot and garlic is light golden. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, lemon rind and juice and stir to combine. Remove from heat. Add fresh pasta to a large saucepan of salted boiling water and cook for 20-30 seconds or until it just floats (for dried pasta, cook following packet directions). STEP 7 Drain, then add immediately to hot oil mixture with the breadcrumbs. Toss well to combine. Serve.

FOCUS ON … Health Wellness & Beauty
WINTER HEALTH Boost your well-being this winter with these tips from Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan. Being proactive about your health will help you ward off illness and get you in tiptop shape. Start supercharging your wellness this winter with these four tips1. Stay hydrated. Unlike in summer, when a sweat session can leave us gasping for a cold drink, dehydration is much less noticeable in colder temperatures. Even mild dehydration can lead to alterations in mood, headaches, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. If cold water is unappealing when the mercury dips, try boiled water with a slice of lemon. 2. Eat well. Fill your plate with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to give your body adequate nutrition and increase energy levels. You can use a slow cooker to make easy hot meals like chilli or overnight oatmeal, or turn your green salads into green soups. Green soups are a warmer way to enjoy the same antioxidants and vitamins. Even fruit can make a comforting snack
when poached or roasted - simply mix it with warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger and vanilla bean. 3. Keep exercising. Don't let the low temperatures and lack of light slow you down! If you can't bear to head outdoors, you can still increase your fitness at home - do body weight exercises using your stairs, a chair or the floor. If you're lacking motivation, having a goal or target to aim for is a sure-fire way of staying focused. 4. Stress less and stay connected. Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to stay on the couch. Enjoy dinner with friends, wrap up warm and go for a walk in the park with family, or plan a date with your partner simply find something you enjoy! With one-third of all cancers preventable through lifestyle changes, it's important to lower your risk of cancer this winter by enjoying a healthy diet, being physically active every day and maintaining a healthy body weight. Prioritise your health and happiness this winter and make it the best one yet! ●

Festival Curator Holly Pittman has selected her favourite eight shortfilms drawn from a variety of genres from last year's collection. From comedy and documentary, through to heart wrenching drama that simply draws you in through its outstanding cinematography. On show, the Latvian chase in Just Go! got our adrenaline pumping last year and was a worthy winner of Best Humanitarian film. Not only was the concept heart-warming and original - a young double amputee foils two thugs who steal his would be girlfriend's bag but the action packed chase that ensued delivered incredible stunts which were nothing short of awe inspiring. On a lighter note, Bad News from the

damaged, edible tomatoes harvested from a commercial Queensland farm were rejected and wasted based on appearance, a study has found, highlighting the problem of food wastage. Tara McKenzie, an environmental scientist at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said that at every point in the supply chain, edible tomatoes that were slightly odd-shaped or marked or deemed too small or too large were rejected because they didn't meet market standards for premium, unblemished product. NOOSA DOLPHINS BY HOLLIE HARRIS U8 Noosa Fins v Maroochydore Black Cracking day at Caloundra and we took on a good Maroochydore team. Our boys did their best being short on players luckily our other U8 team help us out. Kellen did some great storming forward runs to get him 2 tries along with Noah getting that ball and breaking through. Ethan got involved doing some awesome tackles for his team. Players of the Day were Kellen Donoghue & Noah Massingham with thanks to Dominoes & Ben & Jerry's. U11 Maroochydore 22 def Noosa Fins 7 The Fins fought a fiery feud against the Swans on Saturday, barging and charging without ceasing. The 'Dores bolted in two quick tries but we never faltered, sending our centre flying like the Flash to score under the posts. The second half brought more grunt, grind and grit from our forwards, clawing ahead metre by metre, while our unrelenting backs were especially impressive in defence, chasing down several would-be runaway tries just before the line. Unfortunately our understrength team couldn't quite claw back the advantages Maroochy enjoyed, but were able to walk away happy and proud after a tough tussle. Next time ... U12 Noosa Reds 19 def Saints 7 The Noosa Reds showed some great fighting spirit on Saturday overcoming the very determined Saints outfit in what was a very physical battle from start to finish. After 10 minutes our boys were on the back foot and down a converted try but thanks to a superb intercept try by Louie Griffen they were back on track and building with confidence. In the second half the team stuck together & settled into their game plan, eventually running away with a great win. Player of the week awards went to Jack Paenga and Nick Auckland for their strong defence and hard
BY DOUG MCCONNELL Noosa's entry in the Shield competition played away at Nambour yesterday against Nambour 1. All matches were hard fought as evidenced by the scores: not one of the singles matches was won with a score of 10 hoops, either in the 1/2 or 3/4 singles including the reverse. As you will read, Julie Terry 's reverse singles win against Shirley McLaren was only 5:4 after an hour of play. Noosa won 6 matches to 4 despite Nambour finishing with 57 hoops to Noosa's 54. The individual Match results follow, Noosa's scores shown first in each case. In the 1/2 singles Susan Powley lost to Pop Petersen (3:7) while Noosa's captain, Sheila Moncrieff defeated Lorraine Smith (7:1). In the reverse singles Susan beat Lorraine (7:3) with Sheila falling to Pop (3:7). In the 3/4 singles Julie Terry won against Vicki Lawrence (7:5) while Ted Sayers achieved the same result (7:5) against Shirley McLaren. The 3/4 reverse singles saw Julie win over Shirley (5:4), with Ted losing to Vicki (2:7), providing Noosa with the win with fewer hoops run than Nambour. ● work around the ruck. U14 Noosa 5 def by Flinders/Saints 19 This tight game against top of the ladder opponents finally ran away from Noosa. With the score at 12-5 with 5 minutes to go, the next try was always going to be crucial but it went the other way this time. Try: Jason Burns U6 Noosa v Saints Round 7 this week saw our team play the Saints down at Caloundra. The strength this week was their defence with tags being made more consistently by clearly placing two hands on the Saint's shorts. There was an increase in "quick plays of the ball" which enabled the little U/6 Dolphins to score more tries. The Dolphin's Man of the

NOOSA EAGLES U7 Gold have definitely learnt the true meaning of team! As a couple of players walked on field feeling a little unwell, they were determined to be there for everyone! Each player gave it their all playing their best defence yet! Well done to Imogen who followed that ball and defended it away from tahere opponents goals, stopping a few. Every player put their passing skills to practice by calling for each other and looking for their teams mates as they kept the ball in their goal area most of the game. Congratulations Emily on kicking your first goal and great job to Cruiz, Zach, Myles and Matthew for your goals as well! Player of the week went to Matthew who, despite felt
unwell and was injured on field, continued to play and be unstoppable! The kids were all very proud of their 6-0 victory! Well done U7 Gold! The Under 8 Gold team played an outstanding game against the Coolum Snappers this week and secured a strong 7-3 victory. Each of our boys put in 100% effort and worked solidly as a team to get the ball down the field and into the goals. Well done to our goal scorers Ryan C, Kyro and Xavier who each put one past the Coolum keeper, and to Man of the Match Ryan A who scored three goals for our team, and one for Coolum (oops - wrong way)! Special mention to Phoenix for fierce goal
U7 Gold players Myles Rollason, Emily Talbot, Matthew Prytherick.

keeping and Max, who played with sheer determination and energy. Another exciting game with many cheers from the sideline. Well done, Noosa U8. ●
DRAGONS TAKE ON GRAMMAR Round 7 saw Eumundi Dragons in Caloundra to take on Grammar. A cold morning and conditions were perfect for the game. There was a marked improvement in the U9s tackling, passing and defence. The Sparks brothers had some solid tackling and made some excellent passes. Jet Herbert played a key role in forwards and was strong and fast in running through Grammar to score multiple try's for the team. Zac Long was the man of the match for the dragons with an all-round impressive game and Craig Yaxley scored for Dragons to wrap up the game with his first every try. But the noosatoday.com.au
real stars today were the whole team, they put their training into practice and played a fantastic match. By Eamon O'Grady This weeks game was almost text book stuff. It all started at this weeks training where we tried something different, by sitting and listening for 15 mins about field positions, and how to read the game. Then a few tackling drills and a quick game to be ready for game day. Saturday's game was early but the weather was fine but cool. After the first kick off the team worked the field side to side to defend there line. We had, had a tough match against this Mathew flinders
team at the start of the season but this time our boys were ready. Our fowards did very well again protecting the ball and supporting each other with Oaky Dean making a straight run from half way to score his first try. Our backs and all improving each week with Max Johnson again showing off his pace and running skills to score a try and many breaks to gain field position. Tristan Adams was ready for the ball and saved many try's with his strong defence and speed to get the dragons away from Flinders try line. Tristan was awarded the player of the game for his effort. NOOSA TODAY 43
SPORT TODAY JUNIOR TIGERS HOLD THE LINE U12 Noosa Blue We were up against an underdone Hinterland team, so today’s objective was to challenge our kids character and how disciplined they would be with the team structure. No one disappointed, it was a well rounded victory not just on the score board, but how the kids took on today’s challenges. Well done to all. Best players in order were Zac Marenko, Ethan Slaney and Jago Roberts. Thank you to all the players that played for the other team to help out.
Endurance timing at Noosa.
NOOSA MASTERS RETAIN TROPHY Noosa Masters Swim Club has won a coveted national trophy for the fifth year in succession. The Vorgee Endurance 1000 trophy is for a rigorous year-long competition that pits individual swimmers against the clock. Around the country in 2017, 158 clubs competed, with Noosa's 61 swimmers amassing a staggering 22,238 points more than 4,000 ahead of their traditional Tasmanian rival and runner-up. Of the 1,810 swimmers who competed nationally, only 52 scored top points - and seven of them were from Noosa! To attain the top score of 1005 points, an individual must complete 62 timed swims ranging from twenty-five separate swims of 400 metres to three swims of 60 minutes duration - all against national benchmarks.
U14 Noosa Red
All strokes are included as well as individual medley. The endurance program is a perfect vehicle for personal fitness. All abilities are catered for by a sliding scale of points, allowing every swimmer to contribute to the club's total. More importantly, everyone aims to maintain or exceed their personal best in each stroke and at each distance. That goal is a great motivator, as is the delight of sharing achievements with club mates over coffee afterwards. Noosa Masters allocates a Tuesday morning session each week to timing the endurance swims, backed up by Saturday sessions and occasional twilight gatherings when swims are followed by a celebratory glass of wine and savoury treats. ●
The Noosa Red under 14 boys had a disappointing match, going down to Gympie Pomona at Weyba Road on Sunday. It was a promising start for the Tigers who kicked two goals to one in the first quarter and looked right in the game. The second and third quarters were a different story as the Cats dominated the play to hold a 30 point lead at 3 quarter time. To their credit, the young tigers fought out the game gallantly, winning the last quarter. The final score was Gympie Pomona 7.8.50 to Noosa 3.4.22. Captain Nick Cuthbertson led the way for the Tigers with a gutsy 4 quarter display. Despite being one of the smallest on the field, Jack Leary showed great determination on the wing. Ruckman Liam Switzer also battled hard all day, taking a number of great marks around the ground. And Jed Bullman was again tough all day and lifted the team at various stages through the game.
U10 Noosa Blue Noosa Blue vs Pomona, Cooroy & District Another great game played today in Pomona on a soft and slippery ground, it was a fast pace game, Pomona moved the ball quickly out of the Midfield in the first half, but our defenders done a great job keeping the pressure on. When the ball moved forward all our team worked well together locking it in our forward zone providing good scoring opportunities.
Riley Mackay, Beau Stevenson, Nelson Evans and Jesse Bamford are all playing amazing football and showing great leadership as top age players. Commendable performances today showing skills learnt in our training sessions goes to Lily Rofe, Edward Smith, Julian Mason, Will Caspers, Flynn Westman. We welcomed back Baylee Froome today for his first game of the season returning after a broken arm, well done bud you played an awesome game. Player of the day went to Flynn Wood, who has put in 100% every week and in his first year of AFL is proving to be an awesome footballer displaying great skills and focus in all positions especially as a defender, well done mate! Well done Noosa Blues you are all doing a fantastic job and enjoying your footy. Cheers Coach Dan
U12 Noosa Red Noosa Red v Kawana Hawks An early 9am start on Sunday playing Kawana Hawks at home, and maybe we hadn’t fully woken up because we were very slow to start- luckily so were Kawana and there was no score in the first quarter by either side. However, a change in mindset and a more attacking style of play in the second quarter saw us kick three goals to nothing. Our tackling was also a highlight of this quarter. In the second half with the ground drying up from the early dew and with the sun shining, we took control of the game and ended up with a good win 7.9.51 to 1.0.6 As always, when we combine as a team we get great results and that’s what we proved in the last three quarters. Harry C, Xander J, Finn, Noah and Lara combined well through the midfield and Carter up forward was a great target. Codey down back also gave us a lot of drive. Jai, Jesse Izaya and Kyan also deserve mention, but really it was a true team effort ●

HART SPORT CUP
ROUND 9 RESULTS: Noosa AFC
The Rococo’s Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers go into the half way mark of the season sitting on top of the Hart’s Sports Division 1 Ladder after a thumping 80 point win over Mayne FC in Brisbane last Saturday. From the very early stages of the opening quarter the intensity and polish with ball in hand was all Noosa as they continually drove the ball forward. In fact Noosa’s ball movement has really been a significant factor in their stellar season thus far as they forever change direction and confidently hit targets. The Tigers defence were just superb holding a pretty strong named Mayne outfit on paper to less than 5 goals. Up forward once again the Tigers were not relying on one or more key forwards to kick a winning score however more so adopting the Richmond like ‘share and selfless’ attitude. Corey Boardman was the standout of the day amassing 28 touches and bagging 2 majors to continue his consistent 2018 and confirm why the Noosa Tigers were so keen to regain his services from a stint at Wilston Grange. Cairns recruit Jayden Holt continues to impress with his strong attack on the footy and good foot skills he is really starting to work his way into the season and stamp his authority on the competition. Nick Hill was sublime the entire day kicking 3 goals and collecting 31 disposals whilst long time Noosa Tigers juniors Jai Fitzpatrick and Peter Trompf were easily among the tigers best. It was a clinical team first display by the ladder leaders who now go into the bye weekend in a really strong position.
No game this week (bye) before the Rococo’s Bar & Bistro Tigers head back to Weyba road to take on Springwood who flogged third places Caloundra last Saturday and are the only team thus far to topple the Noosa Tigers. It should be an absolute beauty as should our presidents lunch with Peter Spida Everitt. His relaxed demeanour and life experiences should be great to see and listen to. Good luck to all Noosa Tigers junior teams competing this weekend Youth Girls Match report Last weekend saw our under 15 Youth Girls make their way up the Bruce Highway to face Gympie on quite a frosty Friday night. The Tigerettes showed terrific teamwork and selflessness as they dominated a gallant cats team to eventually run out 19 goal victors. Imogen Van Der Vegt was clearly best afield booting seven goals. Chloe Pitts bagged 5 goals and Hannah McKenzie was again influential with 3 goals herself. Mia Woodburn continued her ultra consistent start to the year whilst captain Teesha Fox revelled in the ruck with Ella Reddaway and Lauren Vaughan also among the best. No game for our under 17 girls due to a draw clash however our Under 13 Youth Girls were outstanding on Sunday as they demolished a young and inexperienced Kawana outfit by some 20 goals. Poppy Tindal again the standout performer for the Tigers booting five goals whilst Sarah O’Connor (6goals),Jemima Ward, Piper Wood and Stella Sudemore were all amongst the best in a very good all round team effort. NOOSA TODAY 45
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
Farewell, “Admiral” Ray McKeon.
Photo supplied.
Okay, the Aussies lost out at the Corona Pro in Keramas, Bali, last week. Julian and Steph lost their yellow leader jerseys, and wildcard Mikey Wright just peaked too soon. But in the men’s event, the two standout surfers met in a sensational final. My money was on Michel Bourez, the Tahitian Spartan, but Brazil’s Italo Ferreira was not to be denied. I didn’t see every heat, but what I saw was World Surf League at its very best. Photo of airborne Italo courtesy WSL.
ADMIRAL’S LAST WAVE regularly in the early 1950s he took to surfing the Malibu chips the Waikiki locals had started to ride, thus making him one of the first Australians to take up the modern longboard, years before Greg Noll and the American lifeguard team introduced them to Australia in 1956. Back in Sydney, The Admiral worked in the fledgling surfboard industry with pioneers like Bill Wallace, Gordon Woods and Scott Dillon, before relocating to Noosa later in life. When Ray's health began to falter he had to give up surfing, but he and Joan were still regular fixtures along the boardwalk whenever the swell was up, chatting with old surf mates or quenching their thirsts while overlooking the scene from the surf club. In 2008 we had the bright idea of creating a surfing "footprints of fame" gallery along the concrete walkway to First Point and, after getting council approval, the hoofs of pioneer surfers Bob McTavish and Hayden Kenny were immortalised at that year's surf festival. Or so we thought. Wear and tear has reduced poor old Bob's feet to a shadow, but the following year it was the turn of Billy Wallace and The Admiral, and their prints
Way back in the mists of time, if you were on the dawn patrol at First Point on a clean, small swell, if you cast your eyes towards the middle of Laguna Bay you would usually see an upright, elderly fellow sitting on a mal that had seen nearly as much history as he had, scanning the horizon for the next wide set. Ray "The Admiral" McKeon liked to sit wide and wait, but when they came he knew what to do, still knew how to stand erect and shoot for the shore with a big smile on his face, the way he'd watched the Waikiki beach boys do it as a young merchant seaman all those years ago. Sadly, in hibernation up the coast, I missed The Admiral's last ride on Friday, to be farewelled by friends and family, led by the love of his life, the charming and still vibrant Joan. I missed old mate Bill Wallace's sendoff a few months back for similar reasons, much to my regret. All I can do is offer a few words in tribute, now as I did then. Ray McKeon was one of the "Cornel Wilde Gang" along with Bluey Mayes at Bondi in the 1940s, and a very good toothpick rider as well. But when his work as a merchant seaman took him to Hawaii

the 14th annual gathering of surfers over 50, known as the Wrecks and Relics, will be held wherever the waves are pumping between the rivermouth and Peregian. Divisions in the Wrecks now stretch up to the over 70s, with rumours rife that this year the event will follow the lead of the Noosa Festival of Surfing and introduce an over 75s. It's just further proof that we Baby Boomers will not give up, and when you look through the competitor lists and find scads of state and national champions, why would you give it up for the bowls club or the bingo hall! Local seniors to watch out for on the leader board include Sunshine Beach's Big Wave Bob Wood in the oldest division available, real estate guru Wazza Evans and the incredible Cuddihy kids - Di in the girls' over 60s, Win in the blokes' over 70s. While extra police patrols have been scheduled to keep an eye on Wrecks revellers, a spokesman told Noosa Today that the major concern was for the harm they might do themselves. Extra defibrillators have been borrowed from neighbouring precincts ●

are still going strong, even if they aren't! Ray was so chuffed that day. For a bloke who had been at the cutting edge of Australian surfing for more than 60 years, he had never been one to blow his trumpet. The Admiral, despite his pompous nickname, liked to fly under the radar. Towards the end of their lives, both Billy Wallace and The Admiral were banged up at OzCare, briefly in the same room and then at the opposite ends of the corridor. Billy would motor up the corridor most days to say hello. I was visiting one day when he'd just returned, and I asked how The Admiral was faring. "Oh, said Bill, "he doesn't say much these days but I think he winked at me." Vale Ray McKeon, a lovely bloke and a Noosa surfing legend. And condolences to Joan and the family.

PIRATES HOST LATINO ORIGIN Noosa Pirates will this Saturday host an interstate clash for one of the fastest growing sectors of rugby league. The GYG Latino Origin is an event which recognises the surprising emergence of South and Central Americans in the 13man code. Players from the Latin American communities of Queensland and New South Wales will go head-to-head in a passionate exchange, with positions up for grabs in the 2018 Emerging Nations Rugby League World Championship. Backgrounds as diverse as Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Chile, Peru and Uruguay will be on display - along with the Sunshine Coast's own dual-code rugby star Kevin McKenzie. McKenzie, formerly of the Sunshine Coast Falcons, was born and raised in Guyana, a tiny nation of less than a million people to the north of Brazil. Another Sunshine Coast resident set to participate is Bribie Island's Pablo Zahoran, a Chilean who first learnt to play the sport while visiting Cape York. Event organiser and Latin American Rugby League co-founder Robert Burgin said that fans would be surprised by the growing level of ability and popularity of the sport in non-traditional nations. "Five years ago there were zero countries in South and Central America with an international ranking in rugby league - now there are six," Mr Burgin said. "Marcelo Montoya from the Canterbury
Iziah Esera Catrileo and Anthony Maatouk are set to play. Bulldogs has become the first NRL player of Latin American heritage and later this year Chile will become the first Latin American
country to play a qualifier for the 2021 World Cup. "When we started out we had just
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
three players, and that has grown to over 300 identified players of Latino heritage in Australia and hundreds more in competitions we assist in Latin America itself. "There's a lot of entertainment in the way these guys play rugby league and anyone who knows the feisty nature of South and Central Americans in sport will be unsurprised to learn there is no love lost in this contest." Made possible by nationwide Mexican restaurant chain Guzman y Gomez, Latino Origin is in its second year and this year has grown from a one-game series to a twogame event. The first interstate clash of 2018 ended in a 28-26 win to Queensland Latino in Wolllongong. Brazilian samba drums, rare and colourful rugby league merchandise from around the world, and a party atmosphere will all be a part of the day, played as a curtain raiser to Noosa Pirates v Caboolture Snakes A Grade clash in the Vantage Homes Cup. Kick-off in the GYG Latino Origin match is at 4.30pm at Pirate Park, Sir Thomas Riley Park, Shields Street, Tewantin, with a free drumming workshop held beforehand from 3.30pm. Entry is $7 with funds raised going to assist the development of the sport in Latin American communities. â—?

COOLER WEATHER BRINGS OUTSTANDING FISHING! With this cooler weather we are seeing some wonderful beach fishing, the beaches have been firing with tailor, big winter bream, jew and winter whiting. Most anglers opt for the traditional running sinker rig and baits like pilchards, mullet strips, salted bonito strips, prawns and worms. The trick to a great beach fishing trip is to time your fishing with an incoming tide as well as the low light periods which are always the most productive. Noosa's North Shore has some outstanding gutters at the moment with the area between Teewah and Double Island really producing some good tailor. On the southern beaches Coolum to Sunshine Beach have also seen some quality fish with larger jewies more prevalent in this area. For the rock angler give Coolum and Noosa National Park a go, these area are seeing squire and sweetlip as well as jew and larger bream. The Noosa river has had some great fish over the week, we are already starting to see those fantastic winter bream with the areas around the river mouth really firing, the winter bream seem to feed that bit harder whilst they are spawning and little easier to get on the end of the line. Smaller soft plastics are a great way to target them and prawn profiles are perfect for the job, rigged on lighter jig heads and cast at structure should see a result. Well known as an opportunistic scavenger feeder, the bream will pretty much feed on most baits but the good old prawn has to be the standout. noosatoday.com.au
Another couple species we see in the rivers are tailor and trevally, both these species love to follow the bait schools into the rivers and feed. One of their favourite ambush techniques is to force the bait to the surface and feed from underneath, fishing poppers and surface walkers first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon with the added advantage of a high or incoming tide can be very exciting. Flathead are also in good numbers with the run out tide perfect time to target them. Small bait fish on small ganged hooks cast upstream and worked back with the tide have been dynamite, try areas like the Ski Run and Weyba Creek. On the Offshore scene, with the cooler water temperatures moving up from the south, the pelagic run will start to slow. On the reefs there have been some bigger fish coming from the deeper reefs so Murphys Reef to the south as well as the Barwon Banks and the Reefs off Double Island have all seen quality snapper, pearl perch, sweetlip, jew and cod . For anglers in smaller craft don't despair because there is some sensational fishing happening just offshore. Sunshine Reef is well known for its snapper over the winter months. A great way to target snapper is on soft plastics and there are some sensational colours around at the moment. The Grub style of plastics have been a real hit with the snapper anglers they have a large fine tail that waft around in the current and seem to work well on the reef species, they come in a great range
Jay Hargreaves with a nice sweetlip. of colours with the nine inch and five inch the most popular. North Reef has also seen its fair share of activity, with some quality
snapper also taken in this area. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—? Thursday, 7 June, 2018
