‘Free’ solar comes with ‘big’ charge

By Luke Voogt “Free” solar power systems from a Geelong “community” program could cost customers more than double the price of installing their own, industry figures have warned. Sydney company ShineHub began marketing the program in May with a headline ‘Free System Solar’, which local electrician Michael Doyle described as “misleading”.

“Nothing is free. You’re paying for the system through the purchasing agreement,” Mr Doyle said The plan offers free installation of one of ShineHub’s systems but requires customers to pay up to 33c per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the energy produced over the next 20 years. “If they crunch the numbers they’ll realise it’s a very bad deal,” said Mr Doyle, a solar system installer. Huw Joyce is fascinated with military and emergency services buildings and vehicles. The 22-year-old Point Lonsdale nursing student will showcase some of his expert LEGO replicas of both at this weekend’s Queenscliffe Bricks exhibition. Huw will feature his stunningly intricate recreation of Geelong’s fire and ambulance station. “I try to get as many features in as possible because it shows the realism of the model,” he said. “When I was an infant I was building things. As I grew older I got more LEGO parts and just continued building.” Huw spent about four hours studying the detail of the fire and ambulance station and a similar time constructing its replica. “You lose track of time when you’re building,” he said. “You look at the clock and all of a sudden it’s midnight.

“It’s a good escape from everyday life.” With an Army Cadet background, Huw’s interest in military and emergency services vehicles is evident in his designs. “I like showing people that emergency services aren’t just the two things you see on the road,” he said. “There are more than 12 different types of ambulances. I try to make it as detailed as possible.” Huw said he gets a kick out of people instantly recognising his constructions. “Some people go, ‘Is this the Geelong ambulance station?’,” he said. “Some people are shocked when they see it. They’re just amazed.” Queenscliffe Bricks Queenscliffe Bricks will feature displays, giveaways, play zones, competitions, hundreds of dollars worth of prizes and LEGO master classes Point Lonsdale Primary School hall over both days of the weekend.

From page 1 According to Mr Doyle’s calculations, a 3kW system could cost customers about $26,017 over the 20 years. ShineHub also sells the same size systems for $10,799 to $11,999 upfront. “I think their numbers don’t really add up,” Mr Doyle said. “If a heap of people sign up and get rolled than obviously it’s not good for the solar industry." The plans involve a “low fixed rate“, according to ShineHub, which Mr Doyle also described as misleading. The average electricity rate in Victoria, according to ShineHub’s website, is 21c/kWh but most plans have a higher rate. The larger systems had lower per kWh rates but could still be costly for customers because they had to pay whether they used the power or not, Mr Doyle said. Mr Doyle said the fixed-rate plan could harm local installers trying to “do the right thing” by customers. But the company’s loan or upfront purchase options were good for the region and had created work for local installers. ShineHub has made a number of changes to its marketing brochure since the first forum. The company now offers a ‘Fixed Rate Solar Plan’ rather than ‘Free System Solar’. At a forum on Wednesday night ShineHub chief Alex Georgiou admitted a fixed rate plan would not suit regular holidaymakers. He explained that customers would receive two bills, including one from ShineHub’s partner energy retailer GTL Reneweble, under the plan. “None of that was clarified in (an earlier) session,” an industry source said. According to Victorian Essential Services commission, GTL Energy received its licence to sell electricity on Tuesday. Respected solar reviewer Finn Peacock this week described the fixed rate plan as the “most expensive way I can think of” to pay for solar.

NEWS IN BRIEF Crash charges A 19-year-old who crashed an allegedly stolen car into another motorist faces Geelong court on more than a dozen charges. Police charged the man with offences ranging from endangering life to aggravated burglary and possessing ice after he tried to flee the crash, which left him and the other driver with non-life threatening injuries.

Ferry increase Port Phillip Ferries has reported an increase in year-on-year patronage after completing its second 12-month period operating from Portarlington, according to marketing and business cooridinator Connie Trathen. The ferry’s patronage was “not the fastestgrowing sector” but was at least helping promote the service to other potential commuters, she told Bellarine Ferry Group.

Pile loss City Hall has lost its bid to strip planning permission for a Lara recycling site deemed a “very high risk location” because of its 12-metre-high pile of waste. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal rejected City Hall’s application to cancel the site’s permit, instead ordering operator C&D Recycling to stop collecting additional waste and to contain the pile within its specified boundaries.

Novotel upgrade SOURDOUGH: WorkSafe has hit Jan, Joel and John Farnan with a $53,804 bill.

A $3.5 million renovation will spruce up all 109 rooms in Geelong’s waterfront Novotel hotel, its owner has announced. The upgrade of the 17-year-old property would help maintain its status as “the best hotel in Geelong”, said ErdiGroup chief Ricky Jeffs.

Baker goes sour on $54k WorkSafe bill By Luke Voogt A “crippling” $53,804 WorkCover bill for a family-owned bakery at Torquay has exposed WorkSafe’s “out-of-step” premiums, according to the business owner. Joel Farnan, who owns the bakery with parents John and Jan, described the 19.2 per cent fee hike as a “handbrake on our growth”. “It’s more than the equivalent position of a full-time baker,” he said. “We feel the premiums are totally out of step with the normal indices that determine these things. “They really need to be a little more customer-focused and more nuanced about how they apply the premiums.” WorkSafe had “lumped” Zeally Bay Sourdough in with large bread factories that had lots of machinery, Mr Farnan said. But his artisan bakery had a “hand-made environment” and used minimal machinery, he said. The premium had risen $8670 since 2016/2017, an increase of $45,134. “We’ve not grown at that rate, I can tell you,” Mr Farnan said.

“Revenue-wise we’ve probably grown at 10 or 11 per cent each year but there has been increased employment as a result of that.” The company employed 40 people, with almost a third working in administration, Mr Farnan said. But WorkSafe had applied the same premium to admin staff, bakers, packers and machinery operators alike, he said. “We’ve got people here who don’t touch the machinery who would be included in that premium.” Mr Farnan wrote to WorkSafe several times but received “glib formal letters” in response, he said. “It’s not in their interests to look at this because it would reduce the premiums.“ Mr Farnan said WorkSafe’s premiums were harming local businesses and called for a restructure of its calculations. “This is kind of going beneath the radar. “We felt someone needed to bring it to attention. If we tried to impose those sorts of increases on our customers we wouldn’t be in business.” The premium increases “far outweighed” the benefit of the State Government’s recent

Safety urged Local drivers should take extra care when “hitting the road” this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, Geelong’s TAC headquarters has advised. The TAC urged drivers to make use of “rest stop” sites along popular travelling routes around the state while also remaining vigilant for “changing conditions” across the weekend.

Crackdown ‘working’ A month-long crackdown on anti-social behaviour at Lara’s skate park has led to a “noticeable change in behaviours and attitudes”, according to police. Feedback indicated “things have improved in the area” even though “large numbers” of youths were still using the skate park, police posted on social media this week.

regional payroll tax reduction for his bakery, he added. Mr Farnan’s father John described the premium as a “gouge”. The bakery was a “safe workplace“ with no WorkCover claims in a decade and none since 2000 before that, he said. WorkSafe declined to comment on insurance policies of individual employers for privacy reasons, a spokesperson said. The insurer calculated the premiums on payroll and an industry rate based on the respective industry's claims, the spokesperson explained. “In larger organisations, claims history is also taken into account. “The amount owing may also include an adjustment - either up or down - that might arise from a change in the organisation in the previous year.” The 19 per cent rise takes into account $3,247 that WorkSafe charged Zeally Bay Sourdough this year on top of an estimate last financial year. The company owes nothing further to WorkSafe according to its financial records.

Duplication project ‘cuts house in half’ By Luke Voogt A Charlemont family fears losing its home of more than 20 years after seeing VicRoads’ plans for duplicating Barwon Heads Rd. Mother-of-three Tracey McInnes was shocked to discover the duplication route cut through her home despite hectares of open paddocks just across the road. “It looks like it’s going through a few metres of our shed and at least a metre of our lounge,” she said. “It’s frustrating because we’ve just spent $11,000 last year on painting and carpet.” The draft plans showed the duplication would cut into properties on the east side of the road, including Ms McInnes’ neighbours. “It basically goes to their front door but our house is set a little closer,” she said. “When we met with the lady at VicRoads she couldn’t even confirm to me that it went through our house, but you can see clearly on the map they’ve given me it does.” The lack of certainty about the project was even worse than the thought of losing her home, she said. “I’ve actually rung and been into the VicRoads office a few times and tried to contact the person I dealt with at the time - we haven’t heard back from them.” Ms McInnes was unsure if VicRoads planned to purchase her whole home or a portion of the property. “Obviously we can’t live there with a road going through our lounge room. What are they going to do, pay for a new shed and house?” Ms McInnes described VicRoads’ apparent decision as “ridiculous”. “You look over the opposite side and there are just paddocks. "Why can’t they divert the road five metres instead of affecting households on this side of the road? But I believe that developers have already purchased the land.” Ms McInnes had lived at her 2.8 hectare property with her husband and three adult children for about 25 years, she said. “The kids have all grown up here.“ Ms McInnes demanded VicRoads compensate their family for any rebuilding costs if the

BISECTED: Tracey McInnes with daughter Britney at their Barwon Heads Rd home. (Rebecca Hosking) 181687 authority bought a portion of her land for the duplication. She would consider selling for a reasonable price but said the property could increase in value by thousands due to nearby housing developments. After hearing "horror stories" about other developments she was worried that Vicroads would refuse to pay the home's proper value. “We’ve had family members who have been involved with it out at Moriac where they got nothing compared to what that property was worth,” Ms McInnes said.

She vowed to fight any attempts to publicly acquire her land. “We don’t really want to deal with a VicRoads public acquisition,” she said. Project director Tim Price failed to answer a series from the Indy about Ms McInnes’ concerns. But he said VicRoads met with local landowners several times throughout 2017, including for one-on-one briefings. “We'll continue to work with local residents as planning continues and share an updated concept design for discussion later this year.”

A Sudanese community group will fight ice use in northern Geelong after a federal funding injection. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson announced the $10,000 for South Sudanese Community Association in Victoria to “tackle the scourge of ice in our communities”. The Sudanese association would form a new Local Drug Action Team in Geelong and use the money to draw up plans for combatting ice use in the team’s area, stretching from Corio to Williamstown. The team would then have to apply for more money to put its plan into action, Ms Henderson said. The team would be the second in Geelong, with a Barwon group established in October as part of federal plans for 220 teams across Australia by 2010. “I’m pleased that people from Geelong are working together to tackle the devastating impact of alcohol and drugs including ice,” Ms Henderson said. “The teams will deliver local health prevention activities, including education, mentoring and support for vulnerable people to minimise their risk of alcohol and other drug related harms.” “This is why the roll-out of our own Local Drug Action Team will be important for the strength, health and well-being of our community now and into the future.” Rural Health Minister Bridget McKenzie said the coalition was investing $298 million over four years to combat drug and alcohol “misuse” across Australia under a National Ice Action Strategy. “Regional communities are often the hardest hit when it comes to ice abuse and addiction,” Ms McKenzie said. “I want to congratulate all successful LDATs, it is important that we provide communities with the right tools, resources and support to drive change at a local level.” The government said more information about LDATs was available at the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s website, adf.org.au/ldat. The website says LDAT teams receive initial funding of $10,000 but are eligible for up to $30,000 in their first year and $40,000 annually in subsequent years. Over 170 LDATs have been established so far, according to the website.

SES honours local units’ volunteers with service medals Local volunteers who risk their lives and safety in times of emergency have earned medals for their “significant service”. State Emergency Service (SES) acknowledged around a dozen volunteers from several local units on Sunday, with chief officer Tim Wiebusch and south-west regional manager Alastair Drayton handing out the honours. The Bellarine unit’s Andrew Turner received a medal for 15 years’ “diligent service”. Mr Turner joined the Dunkeld unit in 2000 before transferring to Bellarine in 2009. “I joined SES to become involved in the local community and do something different from my day job,” he said. Mr Turner was involved “in all aspects” of the service, the SES said, including training volunteers, responding to road crash rescues, flood and storm events and utilising his IT skills where needed.

But he wasn’t the longest-serving medal winner at the weekend presentation, with the Geelong unit’s David Dixon honoured for 40 years’ service, alongside Colac’s Robert Burns. “Forty years is outstanding service to one organisation and both David and Robert have made a significant contribution to the SES and the community”, Mr Drayton said. Other medal recipients on Sunday were Bannockburn unit’s Shirley Littlewood and Morgana Boerner, Bellarine’s Nolla Vella and Renie Preston, Geelong’s Elijah Solly , South Barwon’s Andrew Welshe, Winchelsea’s Tara Renton and Gary McFarlane, and Colac’s Ian Trigg, James Ingram and Ian Carlton. SES volunteers respond to various natural emergencies while also operating Victoria’s largest road rescue network. SES volunteers also support other agencies, such as Victoria Police and CFA.

DOUBLE TAKE Coffee lovers who thought the soy latte was taking things too far will spit their brew over the latest concoction. Broccoli lattes are “on the horizon” with a new powder made from the vegetable tormenter of childhood dinners, the CSIRO announced this week. Apparently researchers are making the ghastly powder form the “imperfect-looking” broccoli that shoppers reject, so it’s a lose-win outcome for everyone. Fortunately there’s light at the bottom of the coffee cup, with the CSIRO admitting to “mixed reviews” during testing at a Melbourne cafe. “Mixed” with barf, that would be. While the broccoli latte might have found few friends, a certain Geelong identity is certainly winning a few in his new home away from home. In fact, ex-mayor Darryn Lyons is becoming something of a civic figure around tropical Port Douglas. He was up there again recently, with the locals this time appointing him to a handful of official duties, like judging costumes, at the annual Port Douglas Carnivale. The recognition must literally have gone to his head because a few days later he dropped into a salon at nearby Mossman where hairdressers restored his famous Mohawk to its brightest of hues. Given the former Mr Paparazzi’s love affair with Far North Queensland, it looks like Geelong’s now a case of ‘Hair today, gone tomorrow’!

After passing judgement on carnival participants, the mayor-in-exile might have inadvertently handed down an insightful verdict on himself this week. The ruling came when the social media fanatic retweeted a post about Twitter users typically having a higher IQ but worse rates of insomnia than Facebook fanciers. “Me on the insomnia,” he commented. What, not the IQ as well, Daz?

Meanwhile anyone scared of sharks will be terrified to learn of the latest threat at local beaches. Nurdles! Hundreds, maybe thousands of nurdles! Nurdles? Well, the name might sound innocent enough but 500 of the tiny building blocks for plastic products were discovered washed up on the high-tide line during a recent Surfrider Foundation clean-up day at 13th Beach. The foundation’s John Foss was horrified, warning of the “terrible consequences” for animals that mistook the bead-like material as food. Fair enough, too - our marine life has a hard enough time navigating the usual plastic litter than also having to deal with something that looks like an all-you-can quinoa buffet. During the Cold War it was all ‘Ban the bomb’ maybe it’s time for ‘Ban the nurdle’.

State coy on bike petition By Luke Voogt More than 2000 Geelong locals opposing bikes paths through a busy Belmont shopping strip have signed a parliamentary petition against the plan. South Barwon coalition MP Andrew Katos tabled a further 324 signatures in parliament last month after tabling 1796 in March. “I’ve still got some more to present in the coming weeks,” he said. TAC and Geelong’s council set the controversial route from central Geelong to Waurn Ponds along High Street in consultation with local bike groups in 2017. But the petition urged State Government to find an alternate route “saving“ on-street parking and access to shops. Mr Katos suggested Francis Street and Mt Pleasant Road as alternate routes “It’s not like you’re sending people a great distance out of their way,” he said. “I certainly support more people cycling but are we really prepared to destroy one of the last strip-shopping centres left in Geelong?” City Hall released a survey earlier this year in which 70.7 per cent of 556 respondents supported the route. But 75.6 per cent described themselves as cyclists. “You’ve got TAC and council saying they’ve done consultation and there’s no opposition to it,” Mr Katos said. “If there’s no opposition why have I got more than 2000 signatures opposed to it?” The project’s planners and “silent” local MPs had “no idea of what it takes to run a small business,” he said.

CONTROVERSIAL: Supporters of a proposed bike route through Belmont. (Rebecca Hosking) 178981 “I’ve been in small business - it’s tough work.” TAC’s Hafez Alavi warned Geelong’s council against choosing an alternative route following “media attention” to the project in a letter obtained by the Indy. “The other routes were deemed to be too indirect and would not be attractive to cyclists,” the letter reads. “Consequently, the funding is not available for alternative routes.” Victorian Roads Minister Luke Donnellan refused to say if State Government would intervene on the petitioners’ behalf or whether it supported route. While TAC and Geelong’s council had set the route, they had not finalised its design, Mr Donnellan said. Council was consulting the community about how to reduce traffic, maintain access to local shops and make an important council road safer, he said. “When council arrives at a final design, we’ll have a look at it calmly, co-operatively and rationally - an approach Mr Katos would never understand.”

Group wins firearm battle By Luke Voogt Geelong Military Re-enactment Group (GMRG) has won its battle against fee hikes that threatened its Anzac Day commemorations. Police Minister Lisa Neville recently guaranteed fees affecting re-enactors would not rise for at least 12 months, according to GMRC president Jason Boulter. “It’s excellent!” he said. “Now we can continue to provide the services for the community which we’ve done for many years.” Earlier this year the government proposed introducing fees of $413 for currently-free permits to use firearms in populous places and increasing firearm licence costs. But the Victorian Government added exemptions for re-enactment groups following state-wide lobbying. “Police Minister Lisa Neville was heavily canvassed by our members I can assure you of that,“ Mr Boulter said. “Once she was made aware of this situation she made the right decision and common sense prevailed.“ The exemption protected GMRG’s activities in ceremonies like the Torquay Anzac Day Dawn Service, Mr Boulter said. “That cost doesn’t go to the RSL, which it would have if the changes had come into place.” State Government had also planned to increase fees for semi-automatic firearm and automatic long arm licences (Category D and E) by $114 to $367.50. “We estimate that 70 per cent of D licences are held by reenactors,” Mr Boulter said. “All the E licences are probably held by reenactors because there is no other reason for owning a firearm of that type under legislation.”

TRIGGER HAPPY: Members of Geelong Military Re-enactment Group will be exempt from firearm fee hikes. 181674 GMRG had modified all of its weapons to fire only blank ammunition, he added. An accountancy firm recommended the increases after reviewing firearm licences on behalf of Victoria Police, Mr Boulter said. “I think it’s clear that the people doing the review were completely driven by cost-based analysis economics with very little understanding of who actually owns these firearms.” But Ms Neville wrote to Mr Boulter to say

the licence fees would not increase for 12 months, he said. “All of that pressure meant she had to have a bit of a look at it and see why the fees were rising.” Ms Neville detailed the government’s updated firearms policy on 24 May in a written statement to parliament. The Government “highly valued” GMRG and similar groups volunteering at ceremonies

and educating the public, she said. “Their presence contributes to the solemnity of important commemorative occasions.” Her statement guaranteed historical re-enactment groups would pay no fee for permits to use a firearm in a populous place. “The government has listened to the submission of the Geelong Military Re-enactment Group,” she said.

Batteries go from towers Thieves are targeting backup batteries at isolated phone towers west of Geelong, police have revealed. The thefts could threaten the availability of mobile phone services during power outages, with the industrial-sized batteries powering towers and exchanges during blackouts. Police called for public help to catch the alleged thieves, with batteries totalling thousands of dollars in value going missing last month. The culprits had stolen more than 50 in three separate raids on local tower sites, police posted on social media this week. The thieves first took 12 batteries from a tower at Cressy before swiping 16 from a Buckley exchange the same night. The thieves struck again when they later stole 24 batteries in six sets of four from a Fyansford base station, police alleged. The Buckley haul alone weighed over a tonne, police said, with each battery 65kg. The weight of the batteries suggested more than one thief was involved, police said, and they were probably using a “larger-style vehicle”. The batteries could keep telecommunication sites running for several hours without mains electrical power. “The batteries that are being stolen are similar in appearance to 12V car batteries but are larger in size and have a higher output capacity, police said. “These batteries can be run down and then recharged a number of times due to the high amounts of lithium. “They come in numerous brands and sizes. They can weigh up to 80kg.” Police urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

BAY CUSTODIANS: Geelong Port CEO Brett Winter cleaning up at the bottom of Langdon Street in North Geelong and (inset) workers after filling a skip with rubbish in 30 minutes.

Port gets ‘clean-up’ Geelong Port workers have filled a skip with dumped tyres, clothing and glass to prevent it from falling into Corio Bay for World Environment Day. About 45 workers filled the 4.5 cubic metre dumpster in roughly 30 minutes on Tuesday, according to Geelong Port. “We are proud of all our employees who have embraced our initiatives and will form part of the solution,” the port’s environmental advisor Lisa Mills said. Workers drove in utes to illegal dumping hotspots in public and industrial areas surrounding the port, and transported loads of

rubbish back to the dumpster. The clean-up was part of the port’s “corporate social responsibility” to prevent rubbish entering the bay through storms, wind and rainwater runoff, according to Dr Mills. “We consider ourselves custodians of the bay,” she said. “We need to protect and respect the environment in which we operate.” The project was one of several the port had launched to improve its environmental footprint, Dr Mills said. Geelong Port had issued its employees with

reusable coffee cups, metal drink bottles and jute bags as part of its environmental programs, she said. More than 13 million tonnes of plastic falls into the ocean each year killing about 100,000 marine animals annually. It takes 100 years for plastic to degrade in the environment. The workers also picked up hundreds of disposable coffee cups, plastic bottles and straws during the clean-up. Corio Waste Management donated the skip for the day.

‘Early parole’ bracelet call

FACE OFF: Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack in talks with G21's Elaine Carbines and Bill Mithen and Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood.

‘No Deal’ in capital A Geelong delegation to Canberra has returned without Federal funding to match the State Government’s $153.2 million for a City Deal. But the Commonwealth was “months” away from making a commitment to the “historic” deal, according G21 chief executive officer Elaine Carbines. “Obviously, we weren’t expecting firm commitments during our meetings,” she said. “While the Federal Government has yet to announce specific funding it has indicated its intention to make announcements over coming months.“

Local municipal alliance G21 led the delegation, including Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood, which met with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and other ministers. “The meetings came at a crucial time,” Ms Carbines said. With a Federal Election looming, the delegation “reminded our Canberra politicians” of the Victorian Government’s commitment to the deal in its 2017-18 Budget, she said. “Regardless of the outcome of the next election, Geelong and Great Ocean Road must have a City Deal to drive our economy to the next level.”

Federal funding for the deal was at an “advanced stage of negotiation”, Ms Carbines said. The deal would fund a Geelong convention centre and other vital projects, she said. G21 offered to host Federal Cities Minister Paul Fletcher in Geelong in the next few months to view the proposed projects for the deal, Ms Carbines said. She will join a council-led delegation travelling to Canberra on 19 June to lobby to the Commonwealth to relocate Federal insurance agency Comcare to Geelong.

Putting electronic bracelets on young offenders could be a “good move” if authorities avoid using it as an opportunity to cut parole funding, according to a local criminology expert. Dr Richard Evans backed continued support for the parole system this week after State Government announced plans to attach GPS tracking devices to youths released early from jail. The government said the bracelets could help authorities detect parole breaches, potentially acting as a deterrent to reoffending. Dr Evans could "approve" of the bracelets plan but said parole officers were “vital” for keeping young criminals out of jail. The Deakin University lecturer noted ongoing difficulties in Victoria’s existing management of youth parole. “If electronic bracelets make parole more likely to be granted, and granted earlier, then I would approve the move. “My only other concern is that the expense of the program should not divert funds from the training and employment of parole officers, of which Victoria needs more. “The people skills of experienced parole staff are vital, and technologies like this one are only an assistance.” Well-managed parole was essential to preventing reoffending, Dr Evans said. “In recent times, because of spectacular failures in parole supervision, parole has become harder and harder to get in Victoria. "So stringent are parole conditions that increasing numbers of prisoners are opting not to apply for parole, instead waiting for straight release, which is completing their sentence in custody. “This is seriously bad news. The likelihood of someone reoffending after straight release is much greater than if their release is managed and supervised.”

Kids’ help for drugs, crime A program to prevent vulnerable students using drugs and breaking the law has kicked off in Geelong secondary schools. Geelong students live in some of the most disadvantaged suburbs in Victoria for education, unemployment and youth offending according to Doxa, the not-for-profit group running the program. Doxa’s Future Focus program would address bullying, drugs, mental health and other issues teens faced going from primary to secondary school, the group’s chief executive officer Steve Clifford said. “We knew we needed to do more to help develop life skills and combat disadvantage here in Geelong.” Geelong High School, Northern Bay College and Bellarine and Newcomb secondary colleges have adopted the two-year program for students in years seven and eight. The students will participate in a weekend at

Doxa’s camp in Malmsbury and four half-day inschool leadership workshops. Regional students were 20 per cent less likely to stay in school than their Melbourne counterparts, Mr Clifford said. The Future Focus program would help keep vulnerable youths in school, he said. “We want to support all young people in making positive decisions in their lives. “Whether that’s staying in education or entering into a vocational pathway, the most important part is that these young people are engaged, connected and become decision makers for their future.” Doxa launched the program locally at the end of May in response to a shortage of early secondary school programs for vulnerable students in Geelong, Mr Clifford said. Give Where You Live Geelong and the Perpetual Trust have funded the program locally.

Pair’s surprise lottery win cures Monday morning blues A $660,000 lottery win has brightened the start of the working week for a Geelong couple. The pair was unaware they won first division on Saturday night until they checked their numbers on Monday morning, a TattsLotto official said. The husband told Tatts he and his wife were thrilled to share the $3.96 million prize with five other winners. “I didn’t believe it!” he said. “I had to check it about four or five times. I

said to my wife, ‘you’d better check these’. “She checked them and then said, ‘Did we win?’ “It was a nice get-up for a Monday morning!” The pair, who Tatts said wanted to remain anonymous, was still reeling from their win the following day. “We are just trying to calm down a bit,” the husband said.

LETTERS On the buses

BUCKETS & BOUQUETS

I would like to advise Paul Anstis (Letters, 25 May) that a quite excellent bus comes from Bell Post Hill to Geelong Railway Station, which is very close to the courthouse. It runs every 20 minutes and costs a couple of dollars. All appointments carry a risk of delays but the number 25 could be Mr Anstis’s solution. Una McIlwraith Newtown

Arrhenius with Goebbles I share Stephen Chenery’s enthusiasm for the reliable and cheap gas and electricity once supplied by government corporations (Letters, 1 June) but I doubt a return to public supply, rather than private, would be superior. Times have changed, and even governments and power regulators have lost their reason. In those happy days our cheap and reliable electricity came from Victorian coal, 800 years’ reserves of it, so it was said. Now the Victorian Government is replacing that coal with windmills, described recently as 14th Century technology to cure a 21st Century non-problem. Why such idiocy? In 1896 Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius theorised that carbon dioxide emitted from the burning of fossil fuels would warm Earth. He thought it a good thing; that it might ward off the next ice age and, as essential plant food, feed the hungry. Arrhenius was largely forgotten until the 1980s when political activists used his name to give a figment of scientific support to their campaign to exaggerate human-caused global warming. Their enviro-madness caught on and has infected the world. As Herr Goebbels said: “A lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.“ Tim Saclier Leopold

Smoking still a drag It’s bizarre to think that smoking on aeroplanes, in hospitals and offices was once acceptable and normal. Cigarettes in Australia have gone from being promoted at kids’ sporting games to being wrapped in plain packaging hidden from display. While Victoria has one of the lowest smoking rates in the world, we still have a way to go to eliminate harm from tobacco in our state. The introduction of plain-packaging in 2012 was a major victory in the fight against Big Tobacco. Last year was another milestone, with smoking banned from outdoor venues serving food, yet the battle has yet to be won. It is estimated that well over half a million Victorian’s still smoke regularly, and each year tobacco products are responsible for the deaths of 4000 Victorians. We can’t be complacent about smoking, so to help us win the fight against tobacco readers should: support a smoker to quit by pointing them in the direction of free resources like Quitline and My QuitBuddy; ask local venues to go smoke-free; and keep the pressure on governments continue to take action on cigarettes by telling MPs and councils how smoking is impacting local areas. I look forward to the day we can breathe smoke-free, clean air no matter where we are in Victoria. Jerril Rechter VicHealth chief executive officer

Bloom back with tribute By Luke Voogt Bloom walks among us as her everyday alterego, singing at weddings and selling skin care as Amanda Canzurlo. “Amanda has all the pressures of everyday life,” she told the Indy. “I try to remove Bloom from that so when I get onstage I can just connect and perform, and don’t have to worry about those things.” When night falls her “true self” emerges on stage. “What Bloom does is way more powerful than what Amanda is,” she said. “Because Bloom is untouched and untainted from everyday stuff. It feels like the purest part of me.” The 32-year-old returns to Geelong with her show The Adele and Amy Songbook after first performing it locally at the Gateway Hotel in 2016. “That was fun from memory,” she said. This year Bloom is touring Australian and New Zealand theatres rather than pubs and RSLs. She stops at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) for a single show at 8pm on 29 June. “We’ve added a whole bunch of pretty spectacular visuals,” she said. “The show’s evolved. It’s definitely a world-class show.” Bloom created the show in 2016 after discovering an Amy Winehouse song inspired Adele to “pick up the guitar and start writing”. “If you’re going to create something, create something a bit different,” she said. “There were plenty of Adele and Amy shows

but no shows doing both.” Bloom goes through a musically-challenging four octaves of her voice during the show, which she describes as a “massive sing”. “Adele’s ballad heavy and Amy’s got a bit more grit and guts,” she said. “But there are a lot of similarities between the girls.” Bloom will also bring with her a high-calibre line-up of Aussie musicians, who she met while doing backing vocals for Jon English and at other gigs. “I’m just lucky I guess - I feel very blessed to be able to play with this calibre of musicians,” she said. “It’s being in the right place at the right time and saying yes to different projects.” The Badloves drummer Jeff Consi, The Angels bassist James Morley and Stuart Johnston, who played keyboard for English, will all join her onstage. “I like being with musicians that are better than me because it makes me better,” she said. Bloom moved from Perth to Melbourne to pursue her singing career and released an EP in 2015. “I love being in Melbourne - the music scene’s really thriving,” she said. The audience would “get a taste of who bloom is” during her GPAC show, she said. “I’m always writing and we play original music in this show. My songs are in that similar vein to Adele and Amy - they’re quite sad and about heartbreak, love, loss and death as well.”

FINALLY FRIDAY

Taking the long way home By Luke Voogt WHICH WAY? Katie Beckett makes her way to the Potato Shed for her new play this month with fellow actor Kamahi Djordon King. (Steven Rhall)

says, ‘what does this line mean?’” Beckett’s relatable, simple and beautifullytold play was her “open love letter to her dad,“ Maza said. Her mother died when she just five years old, leaving her dad to raise three children. He also lost his sister, grandmother and mum within the space of a month. “She didn’t fully appreciate (what he had done) until she had a kid of her own,” Maza said. Stories like Which Way Home helped re-

12388598-CB23-18

Which Way Home’s return-to-country story was familiar to director Rachael Maza before she even read the script. “I’d already done it!” she told the Indy on Monday. The Melbournian made her writing debut nine years ago with Sisters of Gelam, a tale of a similar journey, both physical and cultural. She and sister Lisa travelled to Torres Strait after the death of their father. But in Maza’s latest directing challenge writer Katie Beckett’s father is still alive. “He’s actually on the tour,” Maza said. “He’s looking after her son while she’s onstage and helping out with his online schooling.” Beckett plays herself in the two-person play about her real-life journey with her father to his childhood home of Goodooga, New South Wales. “He has diabetes, he’s had numerous heart attacks and sleep apnea - hence the urgency to do that journey,” Maza said. “But it turns out going there was actually the journey she needed to take herself.” Beckett’s dad watched actor Kamahi Djordon King play him during a season in Sydney, Maza said. “You couldn’t help your eyes flicking over to where he was sitting - he was absolutely beaming.” The harmonica player and singer even got on stage after a show, Maza said. “You couldn’t get him off! He was up there singing and dancing for 20 minutes.” Directing Beckett in her own play was easier than expected, Maza said. “She has this extraordinary ability to step back from being a writer. “Sometimes - hilariously like an actor - she

dress negative stereotypes of indigenous men in the media, Maza said. “Aboriginal men don’t get praised and celebrated.” She described aboriginal theatre companies such as her own, Ilbijerri, as “critically important” indigenous voices. As an actress Maza continuously grew frustrated at non-indigenous companies making stereotypical and non-believable characters, she said. She would spend hours on the script as

an “unpaid consultant” helping directors get plays right, she said. But she had helped change that at “the top of the creative food chain“ as a director, she said. “In the last decade there’s been an extraordinary growth of new writers,” she added. Maza looks forward to getting to the Potato Shed for the first time when Which Way Home comes to Drysdale on 16 June. “I love Geelong,” she said. “There’s a great aboriginal community down there.”

Philosophy’s ‘life lessons’ Many see philosophy as the academic battleground of white-bearded scholars. But at the Geelong School of Philosophy it’s just the opposite, said tutor Doctor Stephen McKenzie. “It’s practical philosophy,” he said. “It’s about how can this help me to live my life better.” The school is open to anyone who is hoping to find meaning in their lives and requires no prior learning. “They’re courses that anyone can do,” said Dr McKenzie. “We have young people, old people, senior officers for the council, retirees, students – people from everywhere.” Dr McKenzie, who has a PhD in psychology, joined the school in 1998 as a student. He has tutored there for 15 years as well as

lecturing psychology students at Monash University. The school combines Eastern and Western traditions of philosophy into courses that are designed to help people live more productively and happily. “We look at what these different traditions are saying or helping us to do in our everyday lives,” Dr McKenzie said. “I find it very rewarding. For me it feels like I’m doing something useful.” The school started in London in 1937. It opened in Melbourne in 1996 and in Geelong in 1998. “The idea was to help people be healthier and deal with life difficulties,” Dr McKenzie said. “It’s about being better able to enjoy life and know what’s important and what’s not. It’s something really worth doing.”

Practical philosophy for everyday living. A TEN WEEK COURSE BEGINNING THURSDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER For thoughtful men and women seeking to understand the nature of human existence and the world in which we live, draws on the great philosophic ideas of both East and West, past and present, which, when put into practice, lead to clear thought, reduction of stress, and efective action in work, study and every aspect of daily life. The discussion explores the meaning of wisdom, truth, consciousness and the real nature of humanity. It is for all, regardless of education, occupation, age, race, political or religious beliefs. In later terms the opportunity to practise meditation is ofered. Sessions run for approximately 2¼ hours. Fees: $180, concession $130 and full-time students $60.

Geelong experts on floors With more than 20 years in flooring Maria and Darren Styles have the expertise to help clients chose the best option for any home. “You want to walk in and love it,” Maria says. “I want my customers to be happy because flooring is a massive investment - it’s a main feature in their home.” The husband and wife opened Geelong Floors at North Geelong three years ago. “Darren’s been in flooring for most of his working career,” Maria says. “He’s pretty much had this business for 20 years but he was mostly on the road. “He always said if a shop came up in this location it would be a really good place for a flooring shop - so we just went for it.” Maria had worked in finance before having two children, and opened Geelong Floors with Darren after their kids started primary school. With a young family of their own, they know how to help customers select the right choice for their needs. “We’ve got quality products that pretty much suit every pocket,” she says. Some customers like the feel of real timber while pet-owners or young families often like hardier options like laminates or hybrid vinyl, Maria says. Laminates and hybrid vinyl flooring are “the buzz” at the moment as they look real and do not scratch easy, she says. “It’s amazing how they make them look like real timber.” The couple know the pros and cons of all their products, from carpet and engineered flooring to bamboo. But unlike larger commercial chains they

Maria and Darren Styles have all flooring needs covered. take the time to go through their range with each customer, Maria says. “I have people who don’t know anything

about flooring come in here and I pretty much go through everything with them.“ Their boutique range is less overwhelming

than that at larger chains, Maria says. “We want people to be happy because that’s what brings customers to me.”

Everything is in stock for work and fine finishes Doing up a car is a great Aussie tradition and one that Adam Guglielmi is doing his level best to ensure remains an institution in Geelong. Owner of South Geelong’s Bodyshop Paint Supplies, Adam offers a one-stop shop with everything that anyone looking to restore or upgrade a car might need. Or a boat, or industrial machinery as well – he’s got everything covered. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is an auto paint retailer, dealing with all aspects of the panel trade as well as industrial coatings for machinery or boats. “We’ve got all the stuff they’ll need, everything from start to finish – and all the right stuff so they’re not led down the wrong track,” Adam says. “We want to make sure they get everything right the first time, so it’s more affordable and we’ll do great deals, too.” The staff are all fully qualified tradesmen and more than happy to point customers in the right direction to achieve the best results possible. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is at 5/131 Fyans St, South Geelong, phone 5229 1928.

Low-impact collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

04 HONDA MD-X AWD Mazda is running hot on the sales front in Australia at the moment and is showing no signs of slacking pace. Mazda6, the medium large sedan and wagon from Japan are the latest to receive the treatment. What at first glance looks to be an interesting facelift is in fact only part of the story because a new sporty engine has been added and there’s also been significant work on the body. Let’s look at the engine first: it’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit like the others in the petrol range, but now features a turbocharger to bring its power up to 170 kilowatts, with torque of 420 newton metres. On the styling front, the latest edition of Mazda's very successful grille styling has a complex mesh pattern and its centre sits lower to give it an even bolder look. The LED headlamps now integrate with the foglamps. At the rear, the Mazda6 sedan has a new design for the boot lid, the exhaust pipes are larger and have been repositioned toward the outer edges of the bumper. Newly designed 17 and 19-inch alloy wheels complement the upgraded appearance in both the sedan and station wagon. Inside, fully redesigned front seats are wider and use high-density, vibration-absorbing urethane foam to increase support. The rear seats have also get the high-density urethane foam. The out of sight areas of the body have been significantly revised, with the use of greater strength in the joins of multiple areas to add stiffness without affecting weight. This reduces NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels in the cabin. A stiffer body also provides an even more stable platform for the suspension to work within, and therefore improved handling and driver feel. More about this in the Driving section of this news feature. Intensive work has been done to enhance conversation clarity between the occupants. Not just volume of voices but the way in which they are picked up by the ears. Priced between $32,490 and $50,090 (plus on-road costs), there are 14 variants of the upgraded Mazda6, with a choice between wagon and sedan, with four model grades: Sport, Touring, GT and Atenza. Chasing the new Holden Commodore and the Kia Stinger, both of which have four and six-cylinder engines, the four-cylinder Mazda6 has some tough competition. However, the Mazda has long had a reputation for quality and prestige in its class in Australia and the latest ‘6 has an impressive look and feel to further enhances that. On the road it is smooth, quiet and comfortable, even more so than before. We took a new turbo-petrol on a complex trip from Melbourne to Ballarat over a wide variety of roads; sealed and unsealed; good condition and poor; straight and winding; uphill and down. geelongindy.com.au

A typical country drive for a family looking for a peaceful day. The autumn leaves, particularly in the Mount Macedon area made life even more pleasant. Our Mazda6s did it with ease, creating a relaxing upmarket feel of exactly the type its engineers and stylists were aiming for. The new turbo-petrol engine has minimal turbo lag, making for safe overtaking and easy hillclimbing. It's smooth and quiet and we defy the average driver to pick from being a four-cylinder not a six-. The trip back to Tullamarine airport was done the boring way, trundling along in traffic. It cruised in a relaxed fashion and conversation was quiet and easy. One feature wasn't to our liking. The turbo engine does like a drink with fuel consumption usually in the eight to ten litres per hundred kilometres bracket. We had anticipated it being about 10 per cent better than that.

Tailor made for bayfront ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Corio Bay’s inner-harbour hosted fantastic fishing again over the past week. Tailor made an appearance, with anglers targeting Australian salmon catching them in great numbers all the way between Western and Eastern beaches. Both species respond well to baitfish-imitation soft plastics or metal casting lures. Pinkies were also abundant in close, some pushing 60cm. Soft plastics fished deep was the preferred method, although bluebait and pilchards also snagged fish. Garfish also fired up in the bay, with many anglers bagging out on big specimens. A good burley trail was a must for keeping schools in the area, with landbased anglers favouring St Helens and Limeburner’s Point boat ramp. Clifton Springs’ whiting fishing improved on the last few weeks given some good reports of fish taken on pippie and squid. Whiting were also present at St Leonards and Queenscliff, along with squid. Fishing offshore between Barwon Heads and Torquay was fantastic for small snapper. Knife jigs of 40g to 80g and octo-jigs resulted in some great captures in 30m to 50m of water, which also provided a good chance of some tiger flathead. Anglers using baits such as salmon or trevally fillet offshore caught gummy sharks. Tuna were still caught when weather permitted from Portland to Apollo Bay and sometimes even as close as Lorne. From all accounts the fish appear to be out near the shelf. On the freshwater front, Wurdiboluc Reservoir produced trout caught on metal casting spoons. Sonnie Hovey landed a nice brown trout while casting a Paco spoon from the bank, while other anglers caught number of goodsize redfin. Anglers wanting to catch a trout in a stream or river have until midnight on Monday, when the season comes to a close. The patchy rain and cooler conditions have really had a positive effect on the small Otway trout streams but we will only have this weekend to make the most of it. The fish are biting well and will happily attack any small, shallow-diving minnow lure in most of the rivers from Lorne around to Aire River.

LITTLE MASTER: Gary Ablett will plays his 200th game for Geelong tomorrow. (Rebecca Hosking) 181632

Little Master set to play 200th for Cats By Justin Flynn Gary Ablett Junior will become the 39th Geelong player to notch up 200 games for the club tomorrow. The Little Master reminded everyone of his brilliance last week as the Cats ran rampant at Metricon Stadium. Ablett kicked three goals and gathered 37 touches in a game that only rubbed it in the noses of the Gold Coast fans that became accustomed to seeing the magician do the same thing for their club the past seven seasons. “It was a game I was very excited to be a part of,” he said. “I’ve said a couple of times this year, I don’t expect to get 30 touches each week.” Ablett said his milestone was something he never thought about when he entered the big time. “When I was first drafted, for me, it was

7-4 record and a healthy percentage. Geelong is also 7-4 and sits one rung above the Roos by only 3.5%. North Melbourne won’t be overly concerned about travelling down the highway to Geelong, either. Brad Scott’s side has had wins in Perth, Hobart and Sydney already this season. While Geelong’s Chris Scott is widely regarded as the best match-day coach in the game, twin brother Brad would have to be considered as the best coach so far this season, such has been North’s improvement. North is a free-scoring side, too. It has scored 95 points or more six times this season. Expect Chris Scott to lock the game down on the narrow GMHBA Stadium. The Roos will be no pushover and are genuinely capable of an upset, but tipping against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium is unwise. Cats by 21 points.

Warriors, Victory in clash of in-form sides By Josip Zilic

BROWN OUT: Sonnie Hovey with his trout from Wurdiboluc.

about playing a game of AFL football,” he said. “As it is for a lot of young kids that come into the system, you start to question whether you’re good enough to play at the top level and early days for me there was similar talk around - was I drafted because of my ability or was I drafted because of my name? - and it probably took me two or three years really to start to believe I was good enough to play at the top level.” Geelong’s goal drought came to an end last Saturday night. The Cats booted 17 majors against a listless Gold Coast on the way to an 85-point victory. Things won’t be as easy tomorrow, though. Geelong’s opponent, North Melbourne, has been the surprise packet of the season. Many pundits (including this one) predicted the Roos would finish on the bottom of the ladder, or at least in the bottom four. Instead, North sits in seventh spot with a

With three wins on the trot and three clean sheets to go with it, North Geelong Warriors faces a testing period against clubs in similar form and within a point or two from each other on the ladder. The first test of the Warriors’ resolve will be at home on Saturday against Melbourne Victory. Victory’s past four matches were all wins featuring easy scoring, with 13 goals across the games. A player in red hot form is Birkan Kirdar who was on the score sheet three weeks running. With its own form running hot, North Geelong will only need to recall the last encounter with Victory to acknowledge the dangers that it presents. Victory’s fluid possession-based game will be a threat of stretching the Warriors, whose own varied style and range of goals scorers will be a challenge for the visitor. The Warriors were able to keep their clean sheets and wins going with a 2-0 victory against

Nunawading, showing they could overcome the sleek ball movement of their opposition’s three former A League stars. Fielding a contrasting starting line-up including six players from their own youth system, the Warriors dominated the first half and capitalised on their chances. In a set piece at the 35th minute, defender Lewis Waight got his head to the ball to guide it into the top corner. Three minutes later defensive midfielder Andreas Miltiadou pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box to drive past the sea of legs and score. With the score locked in at 2-0 the club witnessed another proud moment in its rich history when 15-year-old Anthony Leban had his first run for his childhood club. The under-20s side welcomed back coach Ahmad Sulaimi to steer the lads for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately the return didn’t result in a win, with the lads going down 2-1, Marco Farrell scoring for North Geelong.

CLEANING UP: Goalkeeper Hamish Flavell has helped the Warrirors to three clean sheets in a row. (Ivan Dugandzic) Friday, 8 June, 2018
