Anthony's honour By Kath Gannaway
Mount Evelyn's Anthony McAleer OAM. 181782 under incredible circumstances." Anthony said that as someone who had come from a generation who didn't experience large-scale war - he was one-year-old when an uncle went to Vietnam - he felt the need to pass the stories on to his own generation, and to future generations. "For us to look at people who had gone through those exerpeicnes that were so different to our own, that's where I thought they certainly deserve to be recognised," he said. "I remember I was only in my 20s when I interviewed a WWI veteran who was 17 when he enlisted and went through the Western Front. "I was gobsmacked at what he went through." Currently Anthony is interviewing Vietnam veterans who live in the Yarra Valley for a book

"For a lot of these guys it's the first time they've actually talked about their experiences and the stories that are coming out of this are extraordinary, everything from quite graphic through to the mundane, the funny and the serious. "20 years ago I was running around interviewing WWII veterans. A lot of them were the same age as these Vietnam vets are now and they were just starting to open up even then." Overwhelmingly it's clear that the real honour of being so involved in researching, recording and commemorating the local stories of Australia's military history is the opportunity to meet generations of people who served their country. "The saying I think is quite fitting is 'ordinary people who went through extraordinary experi-
ences' and that's so true for a lot of these people. "You wouldn't know, he's just the nice old man who lives down the street, but to realise what he has been through in service to this nation; performed these amazing deeds and in extraordinary circumstances ... I've got to meet some extraordinary people whose stories I will retell until it's time for me to disappear." Of the OAM, Anthony said he is looking forward to sharing the news with his family. "You can't do these things without the support of your family and I'm very lucky to have a wife who loves gardening so my time doesn't have to be spent there." No doubt his colleagues in all the organisations in which Anthony serves the Yarra Valley community will also be standing in line to shake his hand and congratulate him on what is an ongoing 'labour of love'.

Mount Evelyn author, researcher and historian, Anthony McAleer, has been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honour List 2018 for service to the community, and to military history. Through his involvement with Mt Evelyn and Lilydale RSLs, as a committee member on the Seville War Memorial Committee, author of several books on local and military history, and through numerous talks with school and other groups, he has shone a light on the personal stories and bigger picture of Yarra Ranges' military history. For the 1997 Yarra Ranges Shire Citizen of the Year, and recipient of the Centenary of Federation Award, the OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia) is overwhelmingly a great honour, and also a 'big tick' for a labour of love which has delivered, and is continuing to deliver, significant recognition of a very local military history. "It certainly gives a big tick to some of the stuff I've been able to achieve over the years, and not just the written histories," Anthony said of the award. "It's also the material collected for archives, the memorials we've created, the ceremonies, working with schools and other groups, and this is recognition that it's appreciated." His community volunteering and researching military history started around 1990 with involvement with Lilydale RSL and Lilydale & District Historical Society. He has been secretary of Mount Evelyn RSL since 2002 and is editor and producer of their monthly newsletter, and is a member of the Mount Evelyn History Group. His work with Museums Victoria as team leader and tour guide at the Immigration Museum further fuels his passion for Australian history on a daily basis. "I've always had an interest in Australian history, and especially Australian military history and that sparked my curiosity around what happened locally - how did that broader heritage affect the area that I'm living in, and what part did this area play in Australia's military history. "I started to scratch away and it and it was just extraordinary," he said. "I read the Ralph Goode diaries and his story was remarkable, but also revealed some of the local people who went off to war and were thrown into incredible situations

OAM has a good ring to it By Kath Gannaway Boxing has been a life-time passion for Lilydale's Kelvin Bryant, starting as a young boy in Balmain in Sydney to the world amateur boxing stage. Most critically, it has been, and is, a way of making a difference in the lives of young men and women who find a purpose in the sport. Mr Bryant was awarded the Medal ( OAM) of the Order of Australia for service to boxing in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Having spent 45 years in the army at the rank of Sergeant, and specialising in physical training, he says the same disciplines come into play. Among many roles, he has taken numerous Boxing Australia youth teams to overseas competitions and was coach at the National Centre of Excellence with Boxing Australia. He is a board member of Boxing Victoria where he is a Level 1 presenter, served as State Amateur Boxing Coach and Coach at the Victoria Centre of Excellence and was a fitness instructor and boxing coach at the Harold Holt Aquatic Centre. Founding the Collingwood Boxing Club in 2001 is a highlight of a long involvement in the sport. The club provides an opportunity for people in need to engage in life through boxing - they include the homeless, members of the renowned Choir of Hard Knocks, and refugee youth. Mr Bryant says it gives a sense of belonging. "I've got a lot of the African boys coming in, a lot of kids from the high-rise who are beaut kids, and it gives them a really good sense of worth. "We're quite a close-knit club where there's a lot of respect and they feel like they belong." The army discipline and structure work, across the board in training young, and not

"I enjoy what I'm doing and seeing some of the young girls and boys achieve their aims," Mr Bryant said. "I box myself and I know it saved me from going down the wrong path.
"Some of the kids the police bring to me tend to get a lot out of it and I think it's a good leveler of anyone who has behaviour problems - it teaches self-discipline to get through the difficult stages of your life." The Collingwood Boxing Club is in itself a 'centre of excellence' of multiculturism. "It's not only kids, we have some 30-year
old men, and one of just about every race, and it's the multiculturism that I really like - everybody treats everyone else equally." A lifetime of contributing to others through his passion of boxing is not done with awards in mind, but Mr Bryant is happy to be honoured with an OAM. "It's good," he says.

On Monday 4 June, 2018, about 3pm, Olinda Police went to Fays Picnic Ground off Monbulk Rd, The Patch. Sgt Andrew Herdman met with a female from Endeavour Hills who was concerned for the welfare of her husband. The 60-year-old male was seen walking briskly off down Sassafras Creek in a distressed state at about 1pm and had not returned. Sgt Herdman started a search with local police from Belgrave, Olinda and family members who walked the creek track and checked local roads and the Monbulk township. Because the day was cold, and daylight was fading, the Emerald SES was requested. Ten members began a foot search of the track from Emerald to Monbulk. During the search, some evidence of the males' location was found off the Sassafras Creek Track, near Fays Picnic Ground.
As a result, the SES, police and family members searched the thick bush up the steep hill towards Holden Rd. During this search, the males' daughter called out several times and her father replied to her call. He was located a short time later in thick bush suffering mild hypothermia and brought out and warmed prior to the Ambulance attending. He was transferred to Dandenong Hospital and treated for hypothermia and then assessed for mental health issues. Sgt Herdman said after what appears to have been an incident involving mental health, it is a timely reminder for family and friends to monitor and support anyone suspected of suffering a mental illness. If you, or someone you know needs support, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.

Sign up to solar savers From my
desk Len Cox
Yarra Ranges mayor/Walling Ward I am very excited about the work Yarra Ranges Council has been doing to support the use of renewable energy in our community. Using renewable energy not only reduces
our greenhouse gas emissions but in many cases reduces the amount we pay for our electricity. Yarra Ranges Council is participating in the next round of the Solar Savers program, where pensioners (seniors or people with a disability) who own their own home can apply to purchase a Council-endorsed quality solar system. The systems will be installed by local contractors and can be purchased with a low interest bank loan to be paid back gradually over 10 years with zero upfront costs. Households who sign up have access to the bank loan (subject to normal bank lending
criteria), with power bill savings covering the cost of repayments. Solar Savers will check to make sure every household taking part will be at least $100 in front. The Solar Savers program is designed to make it easier for pensioners to get a solar system installed and to ensure they will be better off. The program will help pensioners save money, stay comfortable in extreme weather and lower their emissions. At Yarra Ranges Council, we are proud to be leading the way in the community with renewable energy and helping local households to get on board with this pioneering program.
Sign-ups are open until Friday 13 July. Contact Solar Savers if you: Own your home; Have a Government Pension Card (aged or disability); Are usually at home from 9am to 5pm; Have average to high electricity use (contact Solar Savers if you're unsure); Do not currently have solar panels at your home. I encourage homeowners with a pension card and a sunny roof to contact Solar Savers to check their eligibility and express interest in the program on (03) 9385 8512 or email info@ solarsavers.org.au.

Frank steams to OAM By Derek Schlennstedt At 2.30pm in 1961, five 16-year-olds from Camberwell High School met and held a formal meeting, where they adopted a constitution, elected a president and a treasurer. From that small meeting, the Light Railway Research Society of Australia (LRRSA) was born and today its membership numbers over 700. One of those boys was Frank Stamford, from Emerald, who for his service to the rail transport history has been awarded a 2018 Medal of the Order of Australia. Mr Stamford, whose love of trains was inherited from his uncle and father, said it was after a trip to Powelltown that left him with the desire to ensure that the history of railways, and the industries they served did not disappear into the past. Having written numerous books, on the history of timber trains, and the timber industry, Mr Stamford has well and truly dedicated a life to ensuring that the history of those great steam engines and the lifestyle of men and women in that era did not go unrecorded. "In 1958,  we went up to Powelltown and much to my amazement it was a really lively area with steam operated timber tramways ... everything around there remained unchanged so I took a few photographs," Mr Stamford said. "Me and the boys from high school managed to get back there in 1961 with specific ideas about measuring up buildings and railway rolling stock and I found it practically empty ... everything I was seeking had been swept away ... it struck me then that the history was very fragile and needed to be recorded and remembered. "The history of the timber industry and the way it used to operate is very different to today and is worth trying to save."
Frank Stamford received an OAM for his service to the rail transport history. And save it is just what the LRRSA has been doing, with members dedicating time to publish, record and write about the history of trains in Australia, and the significance of them in industry.
Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT
Mr Stamford has also worked with Puffing Billy helping to resurrect the Climax steam engine, as well as helping in the reconstruction of the track from lakeside to Gembrook in the 1990s
On receiving the OAM, Mr Stamford said he was stunned and extremely thankful, though was unsure whether he deserved it, instead dedicating his OAM to the members and the committee of the LRRSA itself.

Tree plea is not over yet By Peter Douglas
The historic Norris Building on the Burnham Beeches site. Watch, while Southern Dandenong Landcare Group representative Vicki Boyle was a guest speaker at the gathering. Meanwhile, The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has officially announced it opposes the removal of 10 beech trees on Sherbrook Road, leading to Burnham Beeches. In 2013, the trees were added to the National Trust's Register of Significant Trees as the only known large planting of European Beech trees in Victoria. At a December 2017 Planning Panel hear, conducted by Planning Panel Victoria, the National Trust stated that all reasonable measures should be undertaken to ensure the Beech trees lining the north side of Sherbrooke Road are retained. Removal of any other trees should be approached responsibly and with due consideration of the entire site. The National Trust's proposal was adopted
in the Planning Panel's recommendations, which are now with the Minister for Planning for consideration. The National Trust remains confident that its recommendations will be taken into consideration to ensure minimal destruction of any heritage trees on or near the property. In addition, Yarra Range Council has reminded residents council still has a role to play in the process. Council has said that should Mr Wynne approve the amendment as it stands, the applicant would then have to prove to the council's satisfaction the impact on trees near the entrance of the site would be minimised via the intersection plans before any works could begin. Yarra Ranges Deputy Mayor, Cr Tony Stevenson, said the council would work with the applicant to minimise any impact on trees and

Yet another lobby group has emerged as a key player in the debate over the future of the historic Burnham Beeches site, with its first official gathering taking place on Sunday 10 June. Members of the 'Save the Beech Trees' group held a "peaceful gathering" at the Alfred Nichols Gardens, with around 60 people attending, to express their concerns over the potential removal of between 10 to 13 Beech trees as part of the Burnham Beeches redevelopment. Their gathering comes as Yarra Ranges Council awaits the decision of Victorian Planning Minister, Richard Wynne, on the redevelopment plans. Mr Wynne's decision comes after an independent panel hearing late last year, with Yarra Ranges Council unanimously voting in favour of the recommendations at its 27 March meeting. However, group member Veronica, who did not wish for her last name to be published, said many in the region still hoped to influence the redevelopment. Their aim is to save as many of the trees as possible. "There are people within the community who are really concerned with what's happening and we don't think their feelings are being considered," she said. "We haven't given up. The region needs the Dandenongs to remain as it stands; it's a place to relax and an important part of our region. "We still feel that not enough people are aware of what is going on. We hope to change that." Veronica said that Heritage Victoria had been campaigning for the removal of only five trees, not the 10 to 13 trees. The fledgling group has received support from other players in the debate, including the Save the Dandenongs League and the Burnham Beeches Development Community
vegetation on Sherbrooke Road. "The intersection is a challenging issue, where environment and landscape values need to be weighed against the economic, cultural, heritage and tourism potential the site offers," Cr Stevenson said. "The independent panel recommended a review of the intersection design, and the applicant will have to prove to us that they've investigated the best ways to minimise any tree removal before the project could begin." Cr Stevenson said the applicant had made significant changes to their application to resolve concerns raised through the planning process. "We adopted the Planning Scheme Amendment and permit knowing that the application now reflects not only the aspirations of the applicant, but also responds to issues raised by community members over the last two years," Cr Stevenson said. "The panel broadly found that issues regarding fire risk, traffic, parking, environmental and amenity impacts were resolved through revised plans or could be regulated with appropriate permit conditions. "The panel also made changes to Council's preferred permit, such as further restricting hours of operation and adding tree protection and replacement requirements based on changes to the proposal." Overall, applicants - celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison - plan to develop the estate to include a residential hotel (including ancillary bars, dining areas and functional facility), two licensed restaurants in the Piggery building and a microbrewery with associated licensed food and drink areas. Their plans also include the potential removal of as many as 13 beech trees, so road works can be undertaken on Sherbrooke Road to create a safe intersection at the main entry. Tree message loud, clear A large group of concerned citizens turned out for a "peaceful gathering" near the site of Burnham Beeches over the weekend. Brandishing banners and a clear message, the group voiced their concerns about the future of as many as 13 Beech trees that line the road to the historic site. As the future of the trees hangs in the balance, due to the proposed redevelopment of the site, the group hoped to influence a pending planing decision from Victorian Planning Minister, Richard Wynne, and Yarra Ranges Council. LETTERS We all have a voice on trade Due to the bravery of a whistleblower, who risked his job and life, '60 Minutes' were, once again, able to expose the brutality and horror of the live animal export trade. The very worst of the footage could not be shown. That was a few weeks ago now, but l think it is vital that we do not allow such treatment of our animals to go under the radar. There are double standards at play and huge profits are being made at the expense of gentle, voiceless animals. This profit (trade, economy or call it what you will) is 'blood' money. If we were to treat our domestic pets so appallingly, it would be deemed a criminal offence and warrant a prison sentence. Our government and live export industry must, therefore, be held to account. It only takes a few minutes to email a lo-
cal MP, the Minister of Agriculture and/or the Minister for Trade. By voicing our strong objections to the live export trade, we are helping to support Animals Australia for the tireless work they are doing. As (regular 'Mail' letter-writer) Jenny Moxham said recently, there is no humane way of transporting thousands of animals on one ship to another country without inflicting pain, stress, suffering and always the inevitable death of many. I believe in justice and feel deeply for any innocent souls who become the victims of another's exploitation, abuse and indifference. The live export trade and all it represents is a sad reflection on our society today and on the morals behind such trading practices. It is archaic and has no place in our time. In fact, l hope it will soon be relegated to the history books and that tomorrow's children will be horrified to read at what we, as a 'peaceful' society, allowed to happen.
Looking forward to an active later life? Start thinking about it now.

The project will also provide significant recreational opportunities to support the health and wellbeing of the communities of Warburton and surrounding towns. The project aims to create a world class destination that celebrates and ensures the longterm protection of the spectacular natural and cultural assets we have at our doorstep. Community feedback is a vital part of the project, ensuring it delivers the best outcomes for the local area and for all Victorians. To capture initial community sentiment and feedback, the project team began engaging with the community in April 2016. The feedback received at this time was overwhelmingly supportive of the proposal. Since 2016, the project has progressed to a planning and assessment stage to identify environmental and heritage impacts and preferred trail alignments. The preferred alignments are currently being presented and worked through with landowners who may be directly impacted. During this landowner consultation, we've received feedback about the impact of a proposed trail alignment through the old cemetery near Old Warburton Road. This feedback has been taken on board and the alignment will be adjusted to avoid the cemetery. After the landowner consultation phase, the project will progress to a detailed consultation phase with variety of opportunities for people to view and comment on the preferred alignments. This consultation stage will provide additional information and access to the project team through a series of public drop in sessions and will aim to capture community ideas and feedback. We particularly want to hear from the local community about any environmental and heritage stories that could be associated with the trails, the best location for trail heads and the flow of visitors through the Warburton township. We anticipate this consultation will commence in late June. The area's natural and cultural environment will be a big drawcard for the trails, so its protection is a high priority for the project partners and will be a key focus for the design and construction of the trails. A range of experts from Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Zoos Victoria, Melbourne Water, Australian National University, BIOSIS and Practical Ecology are advising the project team to ensure values are protected and enhanced where possible. Yarra Ranges Council's project website www. rideyarraranges.com.au provides regular project updates, and addresses the questions members of the community are frequently asking. You can also sign up to receive notifications when information is updated. Dates and venues for the next stage of community consultation are also available on this site. Alternatively, anyone who has any questions or concerns is also welcome to contact Council on 1300 368 333 to speak directly with one of our project officers. The right skills for the job
The ‘SwinLocal’ partnership provides invaluable support and pathways for students who may not be ready to study at TAFE level. Try a Trade is exactly that; four days of sampling four different, high priority, Victorian skills shortage trades. "The current Try a Trade focuses on the four trades of bricklaying, plumbing, electrotechnology and carpentry," Ms Allen said "The major benefit of a short course is that students are not required to sign up to TAFE to try the four trades. The students are enrolled
in a pre-accredited short course through the Learn Local organisation, which does not jeopardise the individual's eligibility for funding in future government funded vocational courses." Students have access to the Swinburne Croydon campus building barns and qualified TAFE trainers, who take the students through hands-on, real life, practical activi-
ties in the four trades. This program offers school leavers and mature adults thinking about a career change a brilliant opportunity to try a trade before signing up for a full qualification. The next Try a Trade will run at Swinburne Croydon in September, 2018. For more information, phone Cire on 1300 835 235 or visit www.cire.org.au. 12390169-CG25-18
The State Government recently announced a 'free TAFE course' priority list to launch from January 2019. Cire Services' Executive of Education and Training Anna-Louise Allen explained that as a result, the importance of knowing what trade and which course to enter into is now more vital than ever. The announcement covered a wide range of qualifications, all focused on vocational training with direct paths into employment and apprenticeships. "With the priority listed courses directly linked to skills shortages reported in the Victorian skills shortage list (released in March 2018), the data pinpoints many areas around the state and metropolitan regions where there is a demand for skilled workers," Ms Allen said. "Included in this list are a number of construction roles from bricklaying, carpentry, electrotechnology and plumbing, to name a few." Over the past few years, Swinburne University of Technology has been working in partnership with Learn Locals, located in the outer east of Melbourne. "This 'SwinLocal' partnership, as it's referred to, provides invaluable support and pathways for students who may not be ready to study at TAFE level," Ms Allen said "The partnership with Learn Locals means that training can occur at the Learn Local or at a TAFE. Students receive additional support to access an appropriate course. Learn Locals also provide 'taster' courses, which provide participants a great introduction in a future profession, course of study and TAFE life without having to sign up for a qualification." One of these taster courses is 'Try a Trade', coordinated by Learn Local and Cire Services.

And the lanterns light up By Derek Schlennstedt The 12th annual Belgrave Lantern parade is just around the corner and you can be a part of all the action (Saturday 23 June). Each year, the festival has attracted thousands of people keen lighting the night. This year is no different, with the festival promising bigger and better lanterns then in previous years. The event is expected to bring 10,000 people or more to the Belgrave township and as you could imagine with an event of such magnitude a large amount or organising and help is required to ensure the parade runs smoothly. Lantern Co-ordinator, Renate Crowe, said the entire event hinges on the volunteers who do a variety of jobs in the lead-up to the event and during the festival. These jobs include carrying lanterns, directing traffic and helping put out signs and Renate said that often the volunteer get the best view of the parade. "It would be great to have some help," Renate said. "On the night is probably where our greatest need is at the moment but we could also use some help putting up signs. "On the festival night we'll need some lanteneers to carry lanterns, especially some of our big stock lanterns such as the big cockatoo, with articulating wings. "One of the other jobs that is quite important is being a martial down the centre of the road ... you help to guide people in the parade and you get the best seat in the house, we want people who do volunteer to also dress up with fairy lights and colour." People attending are also urged to take public transport if possible, and Renate said
Molly, and dad Jay lit up the night in their homemade Christmas light raiment's.

Local artists Kiera Brew Kurec and Hannah Raisin are thrilled to announce their video projection project, ''A Shared Public'', this winter solstice.
Project of power projection By Derek Schlennstedt A video projection project is set to illuminate the townships of Upwey, Belgrave and Tecoma with contemporary art that celebrates women. 'A shared public' is a new video projection project exploring women's voices in public spaces. Presented throughout the Yarra Ranges townships of Upwey, Tecoma and Belgrave, video projections by local hills artists Hannah Raisin and Kiera Brew Kurec will be visible during winter's darkest nights The project marks artists Kiera Brew Kurec and Hannah Raisin's first collaborative venture working within the communities they grew up in. "We have been close friends and colleagues for more than 10 years," Ms Raisin said. "We were excited at the opportunity to collaborate and create work in and about the places of our childhoods. "Working in such familiar environments offers a wealth of creative material to draw upon." As a collection, the individual artworks remember stories, experiences, connections and imaginings of the artists and their communities. The video works have been filmed in local 12 MAIL

landscapes from dance school car parks to public swimming pools and the popular Belgrave Heights Birdsland Reserve. Together, the works consider local folk stories, individual voices and representations of women in public spaces. The series Hannah has created re-imagines local 'big cat' sightings and mythologies. Kiera's works elaborates on observed patterns in movement through choreographed gestures. The artists will also present a collaborative video featuring a collection of local women's visions that has been created via a public call out for women to share their thoughts, visions and wishes for women and public spaces. Working in collaboration with local businesses, Kiera and Hannah are projecting the works within shop fronts and onto walls and footpaths in the townships. Visitors are invited to track between the artworks using a map of the sites between 5pm and 1am from Wednesday 20 June until Sunday 24 June and coincided with the Belgrave Lantern festival. For a complete site map of artwork locations, visit www.asharedpublic.com.
Stimulating the imagination Renowned artists Janine Good and Manfred Krautschneider have returned to the Yarra Ranges region to present their upcoming exhibition, 'Pareidolia'. Opening Saturday 16 June at the Burrinja Gallery, Krautschneider's photographs and Good's paintings have been described as possessing an inherent mystery, as well as being beautifully composed artworks. Pareidolia is the human tendency of seeing objects or patterns in unrelated imagery, blurring the distinction between recognition and abstraction. Their artworks' imagery stimulates the imagination to construct a narrative. Good's paintings show her interest in the interconnectedness between micro elements found in the landscape and macro
views of the landscape. The imagery is inspired by the scarred surfaces of ancient River Red Gum bark, of trees that have stood along the Murray River for many hundreds of years, witness to changes across this continent since before Colonial Settlement. Meanwhile, Krautschneider has been documenting distorted reflections of the streetscape for more than a decade. Despite their beauty, they hint at conflict, social isolation and loneliness in the midst of caf¨¦ society. 'Pareidolia' will run from 16 June to 15 July, with an opening celebration planned on Saturday, 16 June, between 3pm and 4pm. More details at www.burrinja.org.au. mailcommunity.com.au

ICONIC MASTERPIECE DEFINED by its inviting warmth, this endearing retro-meets-modern masterpiece was designed in 1962 by one of the country’s most enduring and prolific architectural thinkers, Robin Boyd. He was passionate about design and over 50 years later, sympathetic renovations have melded the mid-century aesthetics seamlessly with a 21st century makeover. Light-filled rooms accentuate the focus on minimalist houses with no space lost in passages but with rooms that are relatively large. Stylish interior design elements include window walls and striking pointed ceilings with the signature exposed beams and recessed lighting, ultimately leading to an easy natural flow outdoors to decking platforms and the captivating views which can’t be built out. The placement of the house with the natural fall of the land makes the view a standout feature of this remarkable property. Modern lines define the kitchen with country Aga, yet discreet with fully integrated Sub Zero Fridge and Zug appliances accentuating functionality and style. Granite surfaces provide the opulence. Accommodation in three independent bedrooms and three bathrooms provides the ultimate guest residence in this glass house
on the hillside. Offering abundant living space, original chemise style fireplace in the library and media room for perfect living options. Sweeping down the driveway, the landscape lawns flow into an animal paddock that is perfect for horses. The top section of the property is flat, useable and is dotted with mature exotics. The countryside setting commands phenomenal views across over seven acres (approx.) of lush gardens showcasing the natural amphitheatre to the Yarra Valley and Great Dividing Range in absolute privacy and integrates via floor-to-ceiling windows with the home in perfect harmony. Paul Chai, in an article on Boyd earlier this year, commented that “the landscapes dominate the bedrooms, the kitchen and the dining room; the mood of the building changes with the clouds and the sun” a perfect definition of Moorabinda Lodge. Abundant birdlife and a pair of resident wedge tail eagles, contribute to the country feel. Unmistakeably one of the most iconic hills properties, immaculately presented and truly loved by the current caretakers. Back on trend and a truly rare opportunity to secure a slice of Robin Boyd history, viewing is essential to appreciate the home you have always dreamt of living in. ●

HOME FOCUS
THIS IS HILLS LIVING AT ITS FINEST RISING up in complete harmony with
the surrounding landscape, “Serendip“ is distinctively autographed by the muchadmired and personalised signatures of renowned architect and author, Alistair Knox. “When most Australians aspired to a triple-fronted cream brick veneer with wallto-wall carpet and laminex, Knox yearned for a ’real’ Australian architecture.“ And, so... his legacy lives on in this utterly unique creation of vertical timbers, expansive glass and majestic Bluestone. Knox was an idealist; an architectural pioneer who believed in the “relationship“ between a house and its environment. “It’s the air and the sky and the power of the sunlight, written into and over and through the flora and fauna that satisfy our vision, both inward and outward“, he wrote. Forty years ago, Knox worked hand-inhand with Serendip’s original owners to create this intriguing and inventive home... with absolute respect for its unspoilt panoramas stretching from the Bellarine Peninsula to the upper reaches of The Yarra and spectacular sunsets over the You Yangs. Could you ever have dreamed of living amongst the sheer beauty and serenity of The Dandenongs while claiming views of Port Philip Bay as your very own? A rare opportunity to experience this captivating property and experience the wonderful connection with nature with walls of glass and earthy mediums, is proudly offered. In private seclusion, Serendip rests into the landscape on almost two acres at the end of a lengthy sealed driveway entered through grand wrought iron gates. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and meandering pathways, the home extends over three fascinating levels of multi-zoned living spaces and four zoned bedrooms. Originating around nine telegraph poles, the custom-designed floorplan culminates in what Alistair Knox nicknamed “The Great Hall“ ... a spacious living and dining room with huge open fireplace, gazed down upon via an extensive upper-level gallery walk-way. Whilst the entire home features direct outdoor access from so many vantage points, this grand living room also spills outdoors to a large entertaining terrace and fernery. Every room is individual and impressively characterised by the architects signature and thoughtful improvements by Serendips’ two owners including: •Private master bedroom with adjoining parents’ retreat/study and semi-ensuite. •Two children’s/ guests bedrooms sharing full ensuite facilities. •Fourth ground-floor bedroom or executive study with the rich texture of naked Bluestone. •Family room opening to wrap-around deck with those stunning bay views. •Gourmet Tasmanian Oak kitchen with granite benchtops and top-shelf stainless steel appliances. •Third family bathroom with polished Red Gum vanity and Japanese-style bath set below a large picture window. •Enormous underhouse workshop with potential to convert to rumpus/garage. •Two internal staircases; hydronic heating; almost 9000 litres rainwater storage (plus mains) Experience the captivating views and seclusion of this iconic property to appreciate true hills living at its finest. ●

Surprises in sunshine By Cameron Hutchison Round 7 was played in cold but sunny conditions; some of the Under 18s certainly had fog and cold conditions to contend with but the reserves and seniors saw the sunshine. There were some big winners and some surprise losers over the weekend. With only one game separating the top 7 in Division 1, it is certainly tight at the top and Yarra Glen have a one-game buffer on Seville, while there are four teams knocking on the door in the five in Division 2. The winners in senior football: UpweyTecoma, Healesville, Monbulk, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Alexandra, Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction and Yea. A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Mount Evelyn, Upwey-Tecoma, Wandin, Alexandra, Kinglake and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey-Tecoma 15.12.102 d Emerald 9.11.65 Upwey once again sits equal top on the ladder but third on percentage after a solid win over Emerald. Emerald got off to a good start, leading at quarter time by two points after both sides kicked four majors in the first. Upwey took control in the second, banging home five goals to two to arrest the lead at half-time by 21 points. They were on fire in the third, booting a further six goals to onw and had the game well in hand at three-quarter time. Emerald played some good footy in the last, kicking two goals and strangling Upwey only letting them kick three behinds, but the margin was too far away for them to rein it in. Upwey-Tecoma Best: K. Hinton, B. Oates, D. Waters (6 goals), D. Bell (2 goals), L. Beacom, B. Bantoft Emerald Best: B. Moloney (7 goals), C. Thomsen, B. Wood, J. Pedder, J. Rich (1 goal), T. Thomsen Healesville 20.14.134 d Belgrave 9.8.62 Healesville are sitting in fourth spot but are sixth on percentage after a good performance against Belgrave. Healesville opened with 5.3 to 3 goals, but Belgrave were still in the hunt. Healesville kicked away in the second, with 4.3 to 1.6 and had a lead of 30 points at half-time. Belgrave won the third quarter, kicking 3.1 to 2.4 but the game was looking like it was all over. A very impressive nine-goal last qurater by Healesville well and truly put the game out of reach of Belgrave. Healesville Best: J. Savage (2 goals), J. McGrath (5 goals), J. Roe-Duggan (2 goals), M. Hay, K. Brown (2 goals), L. Daly Belgrave Best: J. Brown, P. Gough (3 goals), L. Sproules, H. Byron, M. O'Callaghan, J. McDermott Monbulk 10.15.75 d Mt Evelyn 8.12.60 Monbulk have kept themselves in touch with the top five with a very good win over Mount Evelyn. They are now sitting seventh, only by percentage, while Mount Evelyn have hung onto fourth, but only by percentage. They are both on four wins with another two clubs. The first quarter was a tight contest with both sides kicking 2.3. Monbulk managed to open up a break at half-time by 7 points, but it was anyone's game. The third quarter was low scoring and tough footy but Monbulk hung onto their advantage extending it to only 10 points at the last break. The last quarter was a goal feast as there were 9 goals kicked in all, but Monbulk played just that bit better to come home with the win. Monbulk Best: C. Griffiths, D. McClelland, J. Rak, K. Fletcher (2 goals), B. Emmett, S. Van Seters Mt Evelyn Best: C. Urquhart, T. Scopel, J. Fellows, A. Gibbons, M. Brierley, B. Lord Wandin 19.23.137 d Warburton Millgrove 15.5.95 Wandin sit in second spot by percentage after a win over Warburton. The first quarter was tighter than some would have thought but Wandin held a slim lead by 7 points. Wandin turned it up a notch in the second, kicking 5.8 to 3.1 and they now had a break by 24 points. Both sides peppered the goals in the third, with a total of 11 goal in all but Wandin still won the quarter and had a handy break of 35 points at three-quarter time. Wandin had a bit of leather poisoning in the last with 12 scoring shots to 5 and ran away with the win in the end. Wandin Best: B. Foley, P. Bruzzese, P. mailcommunity.com.au

Hodgett (1 goal), C. Johnston (2 goals), J. Byrne, T. Leech-Hines Warburton-Millgrove Best: A. White, M. Wappett (3 goals), T. McKenzie, B. Clinch, T. McKail (1 goal), L. Barnard Woori Yallock 11.13.79 d Olinda Ferny Creek 6.9.45 Wowee! Olinda has dropped their second game for the season and has now tightened up the top 3 being only separated by percentage. Woori Yallock got the early lead at quarter time by 5 points. They kicked 4 goals to 1 in the second and went into the main break with a 23-point lead. They showed Olinda a clean pair of heels in the second, kicking 4.2 to 1.2 and went into the main break with a 23-point buffer. Olinda came out and threw the ball at the goals but could not register enough majors, only kicking 2.6 to 4.1 and the game was starting to slip away from them. Woori Yallock held Olinda to 1.1 in the last while they put on 1.5 to come home with a surprise win. Woori Yallock Best: J. Matthews (3 goals), A. Marsh (2 goals), R. Allen, K. Thompson (1 goal), E. Clasby (1 goal), M. Batten Olinda Ferny Creek: M. Hottes, S. Atkinson, J. Charge (1 goal), D. Troutman, L. Hill, J. Rankin Division 2 Seniors Football Alexandra 21.13.139 d Gembrook Cockatoo 8.6.54 Alexandra are hanging onto a share of fourth, sitting in fourth with Gembrook know in sixth, but only by percentage. Alexandra were relentless all day and never really gave Gembrook a look in. They got out to a 27-point lead and were never under threat from there. They extended their lead to 35 points at halftime. Alexandra came out after the main break and kicked 4.6 to 2.1 to give themselves an advantage by 52 points going into the last. A very impressive 7 straight to 2.3 in the last and it wall all over for Gembrook. Alexandra Best: J. Steyger, B. Norris (7 goals), C. McKay (3 goals), C. Heaslip, M. Steiner (2 goals), S. Heveren Gembrook Cockatoo Best: D. Volta (1 goal), L. Henzen (1 goal), B. Wareham, L. Taylor, L. Scott, J. Van Der Zwart Yarra Glen 14.22.106 d Kinglake 11.7.73 Yarra Glen sit atop the ladder undefeated but were challenged by Kinglake early. Kinglake got the early lead booting 6.4 to 3.6 in the 1st and it took Yarra Glen by surprise.
Yarra Glen bounced back in the second, kicking 4.4 to 1.2 to take a small lead of four points into the main break. They took hold of that advantage in the third, kicking 5.4 to 2 straight to have a handy lead of 26 points going into the last. The final margin could have been a lot bigger if Yarra Glen had found the big sticks. They kicked 2.8 to 2.1 in the last to finally get home by 33 points. Yarra Glen Best: W. Kristelly, C. Moate, D. Barker, A. Smith (2 goals), D. Hurley (1 goal), L. Telford (2 goals) Kinglake Best: A. McLaren, J. Graf, M. Quinton, J. Crowe, J. Whitehead (1 goal), B. White Yarra Junction 34.20.224 d Thornton Eildon 0.1.1 Yarra Junction now sit third on the ladder outright after a barnstorming performance on the weekend. Yarra Junction had the ball on a string all day and Thornton could not get near it. The Eagles had 12 goalkickers in all, with Sam Morton bagging himself 8 of the best. Yarra Junction kicked 14 goals in the first half and then 20 in the second half; Thornton had no answers for the onslaught. Yarra Junction Best: S. Morton (8 goals), A. Chandler (2 goals), S. Cannon (4 goals), J. Bombinski (2 goals), C. Hoare (4 goals), L. Hoffman (1 goal) Thornton-Eildon Best: J. Scotland, D. Creed, B. Clarke, J. Dickson, R. Andrews Yea 11.12.78 d Powelltown 2.14.26 Yea bounced back from their loss last week and sit in fifth spot by percentage at the end of the day. Yea got the early lead and were never headed. They kicked 4.6 to 3 behinds in the first and the scene was set with a 27-point lead. Powelltown could only manage 1 behind in the second; even Yea could only add 2.3 but they were in front and that was the important thing. They tidied up in the third, kicking 4.2 and Powelltown got their first major for the game. Powelltown would be bitterly disappointed with their score-line for the day and will do some soul searching during the week. Yea Best: H. Jarvie (1 goal), R. Aldous (2 goals), J. Ryan, S. Connell, A. Belli a life member By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics' Saturday morning cross-country was held at a sunbaked Margaret Lewsi Resreve in Coldstream. After a robust congratulations to Rob Belli for his LAVIC - EMR life membership, an exceptional turn out of eager athletes and supporters turned their attention to the challenge ahead. Rob Belli is a stalwart of Yarra Ranges Athletics. Rob has been involved with the club before and after his children finished competing at Yarra Ranges Athletics Little Athletics, performing numerous roles within the club, most notably as a starter during the summer months and as a starter, organiser and competitior during the winter cross country season. Rob is also actively involved in officiating where he is regarded as one of the premier starters in Victoria, often convening courses on behalf of LAVIC and EMR. This recognition from EMR of Life Membership is a well earned award for a well respected, admired and loved member of the athletics community. Rob duly started the first of five races, encouraging every athlete to push themselves, be it training for school cross country championships or just chasing personal bests and the elusive chocolate frog reward. MOTORING
The new Holden Commodore range is sure to impress Australian drivers. 178596
Commodore a leap forward Your grandparents had one, so did your parents, and now it's your turn, as the all-new Holden Commodore is finally launched. And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero. With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing. Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology. The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times. There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers. 28 MAIL

Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear! Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before. A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day. They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not? Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion. But that's not the only cool bit. To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required. "Commodore has been at the forefront of delivering new driver technology to Australians for the past 40 years and the 2018 Commodore elevates that to the next level," said Holden's Executive Director - Marketing, Mark Harland. "We've got genuine state-of-the-art tech-
nology such as the LED Matrix headlights and Adaptive AWD but also a long list of user friendly features such as heated and cooled seats, massage driver's seat and colour headup display. "In terms of safety, Commodore delivers in spades with a 5-star ANCAP rating, Emergency Braking, auto headlights and rear-view camera available as standard across the entire range. "And with the range starting at just $35,990 driveaway, it all adds up to phenomenal value for money for our customers." The 2018 Commodore has been the recipient of significant Holden engineering input, designed to ensure the car has the distinctive and engaging feel Australians expect from a Commodore. High-tech driving aides, in addition to years of experience tuning every Commodore from the 1998 VT Commodore onwards, have resulted in Holden's Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, being confident this is undoubtedly a driver's car. "We've spent a lot of time making sure the new Commodore has the feel and handling you'd expect from a Commodore," Trubiani said. "We've worked on some unique content, including a distinctive Aussie steering tune to give it that familiar feel but it's the adaptive
AWD that impresses most. "The adaptive Twinster AWD system gives Commodore traction to a level it's never had before. In the wet, it sticks to the road like glue and in the dry, it feels like it's running on rails which is great for giving drivers confidence that when they turn the wheel, they know exactly where the car will go and what it will do." The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from Holden dealers nationwide from late February 2018 with customers encouraged to go and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. 40 years of Commodore DNA and learnings inspire evolution of an icon; Next-generation Commodore launches after over 200,000km local testing and unique Holden engineering input; Long list of Commodore firsts including Adaptive AWD, 360-degree camera and heated and cooled massage seats; Next-generation Commodore turns night into day with Adaptive LED Matrix headlights - 32 lights reading road, other cars and pedestrians; All-new Commodore awarded 5-star ANCAP.
