Casey data theft Casey Council has been caught up in a major data breach that has compromised personal information of its job applicants. On 8 June, Casey announced its online recruitment service provider PageUp People warned of a "possible serious security data breach" occurring in mid-late May. The council was informed of the breach on 4 June. It has since removed access to the recruitment service. Casey recently emailed its recent job applicants warning that a "breach of your privacy may have occurred".

"The breach in question relates to information you have provided through Council's online recruitment module managed by a third party vendor containing your personal details," people and culture manager Fran Boyd wrote. "I apologise if this incident has caused you any stress and Council deeply regrets that this incident has occurred." In a public statement, Casey acting chief executive Steve Dalton alluded to the delayed notice given by PageUp. "The City of Casey is meeting with the provider to determine the impact on applicants and to seek explanations as to why it took more than a week to inform Council of the breach.
"Council has urged those affected to be vigilant about any unusual activity relating to their personal information." The data breach is believed to have affected numerous banks, universities, state government agencies and major companies in Australia. In a statement on 12 June, PageUp said "unauthorised person(s)" had accessed its system. It believed "on the balance of probabilities" that the personal data of its clients, placement agencies, applicants, references and its employees had been accessed. This could include names, street addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, as well as employee usernames and passwords, PageUp stated.

It stated that employment contracts, resumes, tax file numbers, credit card information and bank account information were not accessed. The firm's statement claimed that "PageUp is safe to use." "Cybersecurity experts investigating have confirmed they have not identified any further threats to our system. "We have confirmed that the threat on our systems has been contained and eradicated." The Australian Cyber Security Centre, Australian Federal Police and independent "expert cybersecurity firms" were investigating the incident, it stated.

High-rises in the suburbs By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents are set to fight City of Casey plans to introduce multi-storey apartments across scores of residential streets. In an attempt to curb suburban sprawl, Casey wants higher-density neighbourhoods near activity centres and public transport. Its proposed Planning Amendment C198 will encourage townhouses, units and apartments of up to 11.5 metres (three storeys) or 13.5 metres (four storeys) in affected streets. The changes would roll-out around Endeavour Hills activity centre, Berwick Village, Timbarra Estate, Casey Central shopping centre, Autumn Place, Doveton, Eden Rise Village, Hampton Park Central, Lynbrook Village and railway station, Merinda Park railway station, Amberly Park, Fountain Gate and Springhill, Cranbourne North. Casey received a largely hostile mass of 321 public submissions, including nine petitions in Endeavour Hills, Gloucester Avenue, Berwick and Timbarra Estate, Berwick. Concerns include increased traffic and parking congestion, eroded neighbourhood character and the lack of public transport,
Outraged Timbarra Estate residents Declan Foley, Laurie Gyles, Pamela Fleming, Barry Cawsley, Rosalind Rosario, Anne Cawsley and Mal Newington. 176982 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS road and other infrastructure. After submissions, Casey Council rezoned the Lyrebird Gardens section of Timbarra Estate from a maximum four storeys to three storeys. It removed streets west of Endeavour Hills
activity centre from the changes. The council will also review Gloucester Avenue, Berwick in light of "elements" of significant historic and streetscape value. However residents from parts of Timbarra Estate felt ignored, including petitioners in Samuel Close and Dylan Court. Resident Declan Foley says he'll fight the proposal for medium density housing and apartments of up to three storeys and 11.5 metres high in the serene neighbourhood. He moved into the largely single-storey area 20 years ago because of its ambience. Mr Foley says it had been unspoiled since then, and been a popular settlement for young families and retirees. The area's narrow roads and cul-de-sacs couldn't cope with extra traffic, the taller, bulkier buildings were out of character and the area was at greater risk of stormwater floods, he said. Mr Foley argues against Casey's claims that the area is within walking distance of shops and public transport. It's serviced by infrequent buses and near Parkhill Plaza's "supermarket, cafes and twodollar-shops", he says.
"There's no rhyme or reason to choosing this area." A Casey Council officer's report on the Amendment stated higher-density neighbourhoods in "conveniently located" areas would reduce car trips - and hence lower traffic and parking congestion. "Additional road infrastructure will be assessed on an as-needs basis. "Infrastructure and service investments will need to be undertaken, where required, as population increases as with all developing areas." In the meantime, the council has moved to protect Berwick's 'Hoddle Grid' from developments higher than two storeys or nine metres. It has proposed minimum 600 square-metre lots with increased garden requirements. In tabling the report on 5 June, Casey councillor Timothy Jackson said the Amendment was the largest ever undertaken by Casey. Before a packed public gallery, Cr Jackson said residents could also submit to Planning Panels Victoria - which is set to decide upon the Amendment in coming weeks. "That is another opportunity for the community to engage and provide feedback."
Stronger community is Anne’s lasting legacy Her life on the aths track By Rowan Forster
A Berwick woman’s notable contributions to charity, on both a local and international platform, have seen her named as a Member of the Order of Australia. (AM) Anne McGill is among the Australians being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her distinct efforts to improve society. Mrs McGill is known for her role with Rotary Inner Wheel, in which she has inspired members to raise more than $2.5 million for various community causes. She still remains active in the space, despite being a member for more than 36 years. City of Casey recognised Mrs McGill’s contributions to the community last year, awarding her the title of ‘Citizen of the Year’. The selfless Berwick resident has also volunteered more than two decades of her life for the Victorian Cancer Council. She remained humble receiving the award, thanking her colleagues, family and the community members who supported her throughout her life. “My family have been a great support they’ve backed me with everything I’ve been involved with,” she said. “It’s a bit overwhelming but I’m so very thrilled about it. “When I found out I didn’t know what to say - I’d never expected it.” Mrs McGill said one of her fondest memories was working with Meals on Wheels, providing food to those who needed it the most. “It’s very satisfying personally, being able to take meals to people who can’t afford it and don’t often have interactions,” she said.

Driver blitz By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have declared their Queen’s Birthday long weekend traffic blitz a “success” on Casey roads. In contrast to a horror local road toll in 2017, there were no fatalities or serious injuries recorded in Casey during Operation Regal on 8-11 June. However, there were 171 drivers issued with penalty notices for offences such as excessive speeding, using mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts and driving unlicenced. Seven drivers were charged with drink-driving from more than 1500 preliminary drug and alcohol tests, Senior Sergeant Hafiz Mayar, of Casey Highway Patrol, said. “The campaign aimed to reduce the incidence and severity of road trauma across Victoria and in Casey. “It was constructed to ensure all Victorians can travel safely to and from their destinations in the holiday period.” The “highly visible” police presence targeted impaired driving, excessive speed, distracted drivers and compliance with seatbelts, Sen Sgt Mayar said. It also focused on known black-spots and high-collision areas. The clear sheet comes after 10 people have died on Casey’s roads in the past 18 months. Add to that a further 17 road deaths in Greater Dandenong and Cardinia in the same period. “The success of this operation was fortunately there wasn’t any serious injuries or fatalities in Casey PSA,” Sen Sgt Mayar said. Statewide, there were more than 8500 offences - including 227 drink-drivers and 148 drug-drivers. More than 540 motorists were detected driving suspended, disqualified or unlicensed. Soberingly, five Victorians died on state roads during the long weekend.

Bird’s flight from dead end By Cam Lucadou-Wells Despite a thriving captive-breeding program, the orange-bellied parrot's long-term survival is still perilous. "I don't think that way," says Moonlit Sanctuary director Michael Johnson when asked of the prospects of success. His aviaries are filled with 80 of the birds part of a Tasmanian and Victorian joint effort to save the critically-endangered species. "We are just doing our best to turn it around." As far as is known, there's less than 50 of the parrots in the wild. Just 19 - including three females - returned from Victoria's coast to their only breeding spot in remote south-west Tasmania last Spring. With numbers so low, losing even a few birds is a disaster, Mr Johnson says. The parrot was much maligned when its threatened status nearly caused the scrapping of Bald Hills wind farm in Gippsland more than a decade ago. "It seems to get knocked around a little bit," Mr Johnson says. "But it's a unique species and an important one." The parrot's population is thought to have plummeted due to a loss of mainland habitat, introduced predators and disease outbreak. However, there are bright signs in the Orange Bellied Parrot Tasmanian Program designed to keep the bird alive. In the past two years, 69 chicks hatched at Moonlit - up from just three in 2015. The overall captive population at sites such as Moonlit and Healesville sanctuaries is more than 300, Mr Johnson says. It is not quite a sustainable population but it has allowed scientists to try different ways to release birds in the wild. One of those is 'ranching' - flying over ju-
Residents learn about the parrot and its feeding habitat on a Western Port Biosphere-organised tour on 1 June. venile birds from Tasmania to spend winter in captivity in Victoria, and then flying them back at Spring. The birds are spared the arduous migration that doomed so many of their species last year. The second strategy has been to release very young captive males into the Tasmanian saltmarshes in autumn prior to the winter migration. It is thought their early release will help them better adapt to life in the wild. As well, captive adult males were released in the Werribee wetlands sanctuary to help attract a larger flock. The idea is a larger flock will help protect birds from predators on the mainland.
The narrow strip of saltmarshes at Western Port's Ramsar-listed wetlands could also form an important feeding ground for the wild parrots. "It's a tiny strip between the sand and the ti-trees that gets flooded on king tides. "It seems to get disregarded so people tend to build on it. "That's the main food for these birds. It's important for these birds." Recently 30 residents of northern Western Port toured Moonlit Sanctuary to learn about the bird and the importance of the wetlands habitat. It was organised by the Western Port Biosphere in its efforts to promote the Ramsar site's ecological values.

A convicted drug trafficker's bid to be bailed to a country rehab centre has been rejected under the state's toughened bail laws. Dylan James Kelly, 32, had been remanded on multiple firearm, car theft and drug charges when he fronted Dandenong Magistrates' Court via video link on 4 June. His defence lawyer told the court that Kelly had been accepted by the 24/7 supervised Arrow Health centre in Woodend. It was the accused's "last chance" to address his "deep-seeded" drug problems. "It's make-or-break for him." To make bail, Kelly had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' - the state's toughest test for bail which is also reserved for accused murderers. He was charged with 17 offences including trafficking 'ice' after being arrested in a hire car in Jones Street Dandenong at 1.30am on 30 March, police officer Constable Jordan McKenzie told the court. Police allegedly seized a bag of eight grams of suspected meth from Kelly's underwear as well as $6,054 from his bag. A bag of suspected ice was allegedly carried by the female driver. Police further searched the car and the pair's hired room at Quest Apartments Dandenong. Police allegedly seized more than 60 items including a Tazer, butterfly knife, knuckledusters, a firearm cleaning kit, ammunition, six mobile phones and an alleged drug 'tick-list' written on the back of a character-reference
letter for court. Kelly denied the allegations in a largely 'nocomment' police interview, the court was told. At the time, Kelly was on bail over allegedly unlicensed driving, and possessing ice and proceeds of crime - namely $4050 cash - in a stolen Jeep Cherokee in Berwick in September, the court heard. He was also on bail over an incident in which he was a passenger in an alleged stolen vehicle in which a sawn-off shotgun, a rifle, $2645 and a drug tick-list were allegedly found in January. Kelly was subject to two community corrections orders at the time - including a County Court-imposed CCO for trafficking 'ice' and firearm offences. The court heard that Kelly could not be compelled from walking away from the rehab centre. Arrow Health patient-care coordinator Bruce Laidlaw said the centre would advise lawyers, family and police if Kelly left the CCTV and alarm-secured facility. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen indicated Kelly was likely to be jailed if found guilty of the charges, including re-sentencing for the allegedly breached CCOs. He noted the "significant" criminal history over more than a decade, including breaches of bail and a suspended sentence. "Despite what has been put on his behalf, the circumstances aren't exceptional and I'll be refusing his application for bail." Kelly was remanded to appear via video link for a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 12 June.

Flower power on show By Cam Lucadou-Wells Clyde North artist Helen Anderson is drawn to the vivid colours in Australia's landscape. She and other Berwick Artists Society members will be showcasing their works as part of a Winter Arts exhibition this month. Ms Anderson has chosen two vibrant, impressionist works - an oil painting of water lilies and an acrylic of irises. Her favourite themes are gardens and the Australian outback. Growing up in Mildura, she has always loved the outback's red dirt and wildflowers. It is a stark contrast to the muted tones of the European masters. "I hadn't realised how different the colours are to Europe - the Australian colours are a lot brighter. Now I understand why the artists overseas painted the way they did." Ms Anderson had put aside her passion for painting after a Year 12 teacher told her she had no talent. She revived her art 20 years ago as a relief from her stressful social-work job at a Sydney half-way house.
Helen Anderson with her stunning depiction of water lilies. 181742 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS A picture framer praised her silk paintings, telling her that she could put them up for sale. Ms Anderson has since sold hundreds of works. The exhibition runs from June 16-28 at Bunjil Place Library. Opening hours are from 9am-5pm MondaysFridays and 10am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Rising above the e-clutter By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Jessica Humphreys told business owners how to cut through the social-media clutter. 181867 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Australians are living longer. And that means there’s a lot more life to enjoy. Whatever you’re looking forward to, the government has programs to assist Australians to be better prepared. The government is providing over $22 million to sporting and other local organisations to help you stay healthy, active and connected. There are lots of ways to live the life you want.

Looking forward to an active later life? Start thinking about it now.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter is an essential marketing tool - but don't put all your eggs in the social media basket, a communications lecturer told a Narre Warren Business Group meeting on 6 June. Jessica Humphreys, of the PR firm SocialConcepts, advised business owners not to shut down their websites and email marketing in favour of a Facebook page. The recent shift in Instagram's algorithm hit some businesses hard. "What if Facebook shut down overnight?" Ms Humphreys said.
"It's important to have a website even as just a landing page, and to have an email list to disseminate information in multiple ways." Social media was relevant for "99 per cent" of businesses but not in isolation. "You often hear print is dead," Ms Humphreys said. "I don't believe that. I think both digital and print have a role to play." Aside from advertising dollars, a properlyrun Facebook page still cost plenty of time and effort to "cut through the clutter", Ms Humphreys said. It takes effort to reach people on Facebook when more and more businesses are jumping online. You also have to be prepared to keep trying different promos - and give the customers what they want to see. "As to what works, there isn't a right or wrong way. It does change, that's why it's so complex. "All the social media experts tell you different things. "I don't call myself an expert ... how can you be expert in something that has just been around for 10 years? "It's new and it's still evolving." That said, Ms Humphreys was a fan of 'Boost Posts' to help boost page likes, video ads to boost brand awareness and using your email list to target your customers on Facebook. The Facebook Insights tool revealed what posts were working and who was watching them. Its' a "bit creepy" but the ads posted onto your personal Facebook page reveal something about yourself, she said.

MILESTONE FOR PARKLEA FOUNDER IN 1968 a young Andrew Facey started what would become a long and successful career in real estate. The grandson of Frank Facey, founder of Frank Facey Real Estate, Andrew rose from salesman to director and partner of the firm, taking the reigns from his father Angus in the 1970s. “When he started to let Andrew and I run the business we weren’t very old; in 1975 I was 30 and Andrew was younger than I,” said former Frank Facey Real Estate Director and long-time friend of Andrew’s, Brendan Rice. “Andrew was a gun salesman. Dandenong was starting to boom and there were lots of subdivisions, so Andrew became the go-to man,” said Mr Rice. At this time Andrew’s interest also turned to property development and in 1974, Parklea was born. “I was excited by the idea that I could be a part of building communities - places where people could live, work and play,” said Mr Facey. “That idea drove me to property development and later became Parklea’s ethos.” Parklea is now the biggest broadacre land owner in the Cardinia Shire and has residential and commercial developments from Gippsland to the Great Ocean Road. Recent developments in the South East include Timbertop Estate (Officer), Kaduna Park Estate (Officer South), Arena Shopping Centre (Officer), and Heritage Springs Estate and Heritage Springs Shopping Village (Pakenham). Parklea is continuing to change the face of the Cardinia Shire with future developments planned including the largest residential estate in Cardinia
Andrew Facey and the Parklea team celebrate his 50 years in real estate. Shire’s history in Pakenham East. “The population in Melbourne’s South East is booming with thousands of families making their home here. I’m proud that Parklea is an integral part of shaping new communities during this exciting period of growth.” 50 years from his beginnings as a real estate agent, Andrew Facey is still passionate about property. Accountant for Parklea and Facey since 1986, Frank Barrett, describes working for Andrew as ‘dynamic’. “He does not let an opportunity go by
– he cannot sit still, metaphorically,” he said. “Parklea has enough parcels of land to develop for 20 plus years yet I could confidently predict that we will be making an arrangement to buy something else within a year or so. “When Andrew calls or starts a conversation with ‘I tell you Frankie boy’ he has some good news, you know he has done a deal or is working on one.” Learn more about Parklea and upcoming developments at parklea.com ●

BUYING INTO MND FIGHT FOR THE LOVE OF THE BOSS STAFF at Pakenham’s O’Brien Real Estate have joined the fierce fight against motor neuron disease (MND), inspired by the heart-breaking ordeal of a company director. The tight-knit team have ordered more than a dozen “Big Freeze 4” beanies to raise awareness for the cause. While the headwear will keep their scalps warm during chilly weekend inspection mornings, their campaign has a more sentimental purpose. It comes two years after corporate director Stavros Ambatzidis lost his beloved father, Nick, to the illness. For Pakenham property consultant Brendan Langley, it was the least he could do to support those in need. “I’ve been involved for a number of years because I think it’s a great cause,” he said. “Usually I’d do it myself but as soon as I mentioned it to the staff, they were all on board to get a beanie and help out. “They were extremely enthusiastic and supportive of the idea. “We’ve obviously had one of our directors very closely touched by MND, so the company is very enthusiastic to provide support.” Every day in Australia, two people are diagnosed with MND and an additional two die from it. The condition - neurological and terminal in nature - deprives patients of their ability to walk, to hold a cup or shower unaided. It can cost as much $70,000 to buy the equipment a sufferer needs to fight the disease. MND Victoria helps by lending that equipment, free-of-charge. O’Brien Pakenham director Rob Capuano said the MND initiative coincides with the efforts of the recently launched O’Brien Foundation. “It’s a good cause that everyone can 2

TIMBERTOP residents are getting fit, having fun and getting to know their neighbours thanks to the estate's new netball team. The idea for the netball team came from a Timbertop resident who approached Community Development Officer Tammy Radford after taking part in a free yoga class hosted by estate developer Parklea. "The residents loved this opportunity to attend a yoga class within their estate and they loved meeting their neighbours," Ms Radford explained. "As a result, one of the residents asked if I would consider looking at putting together a mixed netball team." A Facebook shout out soon had enough interested players to register a team with the Pakenham Netball League. The Timbertop Netball Team plays in a mixed competition on Wednesday nights at Cardinia Life. "The great thing was that except for one married couple, not one single person knew each other, so again it was an opportunity for residents to meet and connect and make new friends," Ms Radford said. Timbertop resident Sally Groeneveld
said she was enjoying playing netball again for the first time in 20 years. "Thank you to Tammy and Parklea for supporting the initiative to form a Timbertop mixed netball team," Sally said. "For some of us it has been 20 years since playing and so far we are all having such a great time playing, forming new neighbourhood friendships and overall loving the workout." Parklea pays the team fees and weekly player fees, while building firm Orlara Homes has supplied the team polo shirts. General manager Brad Davidson said as a locally owned and operated company, Orlara Homes was keen to support community development. "We employ local staff and think it's important to support community events and sporting teams," Mr Davidson said. "We have been around for 43 years and we want to see the community thrive." Cardinia Life has also extended a charitable hand, offering to host a collection bin to support Parklea's upcoming winter food drive. No matter the score on the board, the Timbertop Netball Team has been a win for residents in more ways than one. ● 12390485-RA25-18

It’s the end of the line By Cam Lucadou-Wells It’s the last stop for a much-loved miniature railway in Narre Warren North. Campbelltown Passenger Railway, with its beautifully maintained locomotives, station, signal box, workshop and tracks, comes to a close on Sunday 24 June. Since 1984, an indomitable couple Colin and Nanc Campbell, both 89, have opened on Sundays and public holidays. They’ve hosted thousands of families, picnickers and kids’ birthday parties - and never had a holiday for themselves since, they say. “I’ll miss it,” says Mr Campbell. “I still like running the trains. It’s doing all the work around the place which is the killer.” The Campbells used to have up to eight helpers, including civil engineers. But with that support departed, it became impossible to go on. It takes many days to mow the vast lawns, let alone picking up rubbish and branches and maintaining the property. “As time passed on, our skilled helpers like us got older,” Mr Campbell says. “We managed for as long as we could.” Ms Campbell adds that “no one has any idea how much work it takes”. “They think we just drive the train around on Sunday.” The couple built the attraction from scratch on a bare 20-acre property in 1978. It took six years of construction and earthmoving - not to mention the planting of 5800 trees - before it was opened to the public. The paddocks have since blossomed into idyllic gardens and woods, rock cuttings and a lake. A sign-writer by trade, Mr Campbell’s handiwork is seen in the neat, hand-painted signage throughout the grounds. He retired from

Colin Campbell takes one of his final rides on the railway. 181652 sign-writing only last year. On the track, he looks at home on one of his five mini-replica locomotives - whether it’s the diesel Spirit of Progress or a Hudson steam locomotive 464. He is bemused by the young passengers lost in their phones along the journey.
“They don’t even look up. They might as well have gone to the park and looked at their phone - they would have saved (their fare of) $4.50.” Lately, people who enjoyed the ride 20 years ago have returned to bid a final farewell. One of the privileges has been meeting and bring-
ing joy to so many, the Campbells say. Meanwhile, the Belgrave-Hallam Road property has already been sold off. The Campbells know nothing about what we happen to the site. Some time soon though, they plan to get off for a well-earned holiday.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a midyear break, lessons for their learners continue. Email berwickpipers16@gmail.com or visit the website at www.berwickpipers.info. Rays learn from the best By Hayley Wildes Although there was no TAC Cup action over the weekend, the Dandenong Stingrays were still busy at work, continuing to drive improvement as they look to stay atop the TAC Cup ladder. Last Wednesday night, the squad was put through its paces by an AFL legend; three-time premiership player, Norm Smith and Brownlow Medallist, Simon Black. Black, who runs the Simon Black Academy an elite Aussie Rules and education academy knows plenty about the talent coming through the pathways these days and was impressed with what he saw from the Rays. “It was great - they’re obviously a highly-talented bunch of young men and very capable,“ he said. “They’re a really committed bunch of guys and they’re obviously going really well, which is great to see and they’re really well led by Craig Black. “I just did a couple of drills with them and worked with some of the midfielders on some stoppage craft and just tried to add my bit of experience and share some ideas. Obviously, it brings back memories for me - I had aspirations at that age to make it into the AFL.” Black was also impressed with togetherness of the squad. “They’re a great footy club - it had a great feel and atmosphere within the group. I got that feeling that they’re a tight-knit group too - it was a pleasure to be down there for the night,” he said. The Simon Black Academy, which is in its third year, provides its student-athletes with the opportunity to progress their football skills, while also studying a university degree in business and sports development. Former Dandenong Stingray Tom Murphy attended the Simon Black Academy and was their first student-athlete to be drafted into the AFL system when he was taken with pick #4 in the 2017 AFL rookie draft by North Melbourne. Murphy made his AFL debut in Round 11 against the Brisbane Lions. He didn’t disappoint; gathering 14 disposals and revelling in a big 54-point win. Black talked about Murphy’s success and
Stingrays players were all ears as Simon Black explained a drill. 181670 the hard work he put in to get drafted. “We were pretty thrilled for him. He’s a great young man and he worked his butt off, so it’s just really pleasing to see him get the opportunity and be rewarded for his hard work in the
last 18 months,” he said. “He’s quite a big-bodied guy and has played a fair bit of inside mid, so he can play that role really well. He can also go forward or he can go back - he’s a bit of a utility, I believe, and he’s

Oneata won't be denied in her pursuit By Hayley Wildes Oneata Schwalger has been around rugby for as long as she can remember. Having made it to the pinnacle of rugby union - playing at the top level and representing Australia - Oneata, who plays for South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club, is now focused on making a career in rugby league. With her synonymous determination and effort, the 32-year-old mother of two is well on her way to doing just that. Recently, Oneata represented the Combined Affiliated States (made up of players from Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia) at the Women's National Rugby League Championships on the Gold Coast. Taking on the rugby league powerhouse states of New South Wales and Queensland, Oneata and her teammates never backed
down and although they were unable to come away with a win, there was great pride in their performance. "It was awesome, especially playing against NSW and QLD teams for the first time. Despite only having two days of training as a team, we weren't far off and I know we can be up there competing for the top spot next year," Oneata said. Oneata's toughness, ability to run through packs and make game-changing plays is what makes her such a tantalising player to watch. Her journey to representing Victoria as a member of the Combined Affiliated States hasn't been an easy one. She admitted she had some mental demons due to shoulder surgery which took months to overcome. The countless hours of rehab, treatment, travel and training were all worth it for Oneata, who ultimately hopes to get drafted to the NRL Women's Premiership competition which
kicks off later this year with the four-team competition to be played as double-headers alongside NRL finals matches. "You've just to do what you've got to do to make your dream come true," Oneata said. "100% that's the goal [to get drafted]." With great aspirations, she hasn't lost sight of what her local club - the South Eastern Titans - means to her and how they have helped her thus far. "The club has been awesome," she said. "There's a great bunch of girls there and I love it because of the culture. It took a lot of pressure off me because of the way the girls are and how family-orientated the club is." Women's rugby league continues to go from strength to strength, and with players like Oneata Schwalger taking the game on and providing plenty of highlights, make sure you keep an eye on what the future holds.

Matildas trailblazers link up with Team 11 A-League bid Australian football greats Theresa Deas and Debbie Nichols have signed on as Team 11 ambassadors. A week after celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Matildas' first-ever appearance at a FIFA tournament - a tournament at which Deas, Nichols and fellow south-east Victorian product Jane Oakley all played -Deas and Nichols have declared their support for their home region's push for A-League and WLeague admission. Dandenong City, Dandenong North, Waverley City, Berwick City and the Casey Comets. Nichols earned 12 Matildas caps and played for Victoria for 20 years as well as for Springvale, Dandenong North, Dandenong, Berwick City and the Casey Comets. Football Federation Victoria Hall of Fame member Nichols, now a junior coach with Southern United in the WNPL, said it felt right for her to become a Team 11 ambassador. "I've been involved in football in the southeast since 1977," Nichols said. "There is so much opportunity in this re-
gion to have an A-League and W-League side. If Team 11 can get the licence football will boom even more than it is already is. "You see the talent even just in Gippsland, who are hampered by distance, it's a hotbed. "And then, when you include the south-east corridor, there is no doubt there is capability and the players to have a strong W-League team in the south-east." Deas, a Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame member, said it is imperative a W-League bid is attached to Team 11's A-League bid. "I'm a Dandenong girl. I played all of my ca-
reer in the Dandneong-Casey region and it's at the bottom of my heart to promote football in the area," Deas said. "I really think if we're going to go forward for women's football in this state and in this country then there should be more equality. "For that reason I think we should make sure if there are any new A-League bids that we start at the start for both sexes and that every opportunity is given to all people who want to play football, so there is an actual career pathway from grassroots through to elite for every child." berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Seagulls set to fly West? By Russell Bennett Tooradin-Dalmore has made no secret of its desire to join the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition from 2019, and AFL Gippsland has confirmed it’s a potential outcome that’s being discussed as part of its current review. Seagulls president Greg Kelly recently told the News that his club had not only applied to join the WGFNC, but had several “very positive” meetings with the competition. “They (AFL Gippsland) are re-structuring, and their whole game has changed,” he said. “We are a small country town; we simply can’t compete with the Berwicks, Narre Warrens and Beaconsfields, and it’s simply not fair. “We are throwing everything we can at this, we’ve put the paperwork in, and (we) are just berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
waiting for the review to come through.” This week, an AFL Gippsland spokesperson confirmed that an approach from the current South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) club had been made. “AFL Gippsland has met with representatives from the club and its interest will be considered as part of the Gippsland Leagues and Competitions Review process currently being undertaken by an independent review committee chaired by AFL Gippsland Region Commission acting chair, John Schelling," the spokesperson said. “The review committee will assess relevant data, feedback from member clubs, and the potential impact on both football and netball clubs and make decisions that are in the best interests of football and netball in our region.”

against Tooradin-Dalmore as they eye off their first win of the year. In the two other games on Saturday, Pakenham face the perfect test when they battle it out against the undefeated Narre Warren at Kalora Park, while Berwick hosts an Officer side desperate to take a scalp.

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 11 (SPLIT ROUND) It doesn’t matter what opposition a side comes up against, 56 shots on goal in just two hours is mighty impressive. While Cranbourne was never tested and motored away with a frightening second half, the mature performance from Steve O’Brien’s side proves just how far they’ve come this season. They ran ragged, cracked into the contest when needed, but more importantly corrected shaky kicking by scoring 30.14 after quarter time. And all key cogs around the ground are clicking - Marc Holt is now back to his best, the presence of Michael Boland around the ground is telling, while Glenn Osborne, Brandon Wapshott and Dillan Bass are rock solid. And excitement machines such as Ryan Jones, Kirk Dickson, Cameron Angus and Jake Carosella look the goods. More importantly, Holt devastated with a haul of 10 majors, ably supported by dynamic VFL pair Nathan Gardiner (five goals) and Anthony Vella (five), who combined to carve the game up in another great confidence booster. The Eagles ran rampant in the first term, but were perhaps hampered by their inaccuracy in front of goal, but used the whole width of the ground superbly to set up many scoring opportunities. Despite being barraged with a five goal to one start, the Doves were plucky, and handled themselves well in defence despite taking in a 31-point deficit.
But the game was always going to break open as soon as the Eagles got their kicking boots on, with the extraordinary amount of uncontested ball always doomed to bring about the Doves’ undoing. The difference in class - and namely experience - came to the fore from there on in, with the home side monstering the baby Doves with an unanswered nine goal second term, and running back into the room the home side held an 89-point lead. With Holt ominous in the air courtesy of some silver service by the likes of Vella, excitement machine Ryan Jones and yet another commanding display by Brandon Wapshott, they made the Doves pay with an extraordinary 11 goal third term and a 10 goal final term, bringing the margin all the way out to 211-points. Incredibly, since half time, the Eagles scored 135 to 13, as the young Doves tired quickly and couldn’t keep up pace with the home side, running out 35.21 (231) to 3.2 (20) winners. As a reminder of his class, Holt is now within striking distance of Berwick forward Harry Money and Beaconsfield’s Nathan Langley at the top of the goal-kicking table, with the big Eagle now with 18 goals in his four games this season despite playing considerably less games. And he’s also within striking distance of an extraordinary achievement, with Holt now sitting on 987 goals with the Eagles, with his next three games against Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Berwick likely to get him closer to the 1000 goal mark. On a dirty day for the Doves, young star Mitch Cotter was brilliant, and despite his slender frame, was a bull in a midfield flat-

Eagles soar over Burras By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 9 In the lone game of the round on the weekend, the Doveton Eagles and Keysborough faced off at Power Reserve. With the Eagles boasting the powerful forward line duo of Darren Sheen (five goals) and Russell Robertson (three goals) for the first time this season, Doveton led at every change to run out 13.18 (96) to 10.13 (73) winners. After a tight first half the Eagles put together a strong third quarter effort to take a 28-point lead into the final change and were never truly troubled in the final quarter. Robertson produced the highlight of the day when he took one of signature high-flying grabs, while Sheen was impressive up forward. Michael Callinan and Steven Ognjenovic were dominant for the Eagles, while Troy Cullen, Chris Bryan (three goals) and Jack Cole did all they could for the Burras. Keysborough's Damien Collins was heavily concussed after an innocuous high-head bump during the game. He was immediately taken to hospital, but we hear he is recovering well and is on the mend. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 9 Pearcedale did what they needed to do on Saturday, knocking off the bottom placed Crib Point, 5.6 (36) to 13.9 (87). The Panthers found the break in the second term, stretching their 13 point quarter time lead to 49 after a seven goal to one second term. The visitors held sway comfortably in the second half to kick four goals apiece in the second half, with Ben Mitchell and Laughlin Cowell both starring with five goals each. Future stars on show in an action packed carnival By AFL South East Media Brilliant weather and even better football from the future stars of the game were just two of highlights of a thrilling conclusion to the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships on the weekend. Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in the three-day carnival, which began at Beaconsfield's Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday before switching to Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for Saturday and Monday fixtures across the Queen's Birthday weekend. Competition was fair but fierce, with all four leagues walking away with at least one win over the carnival. The FDJFL led the way with three wins, including a dominant performance in the Under-15 Boys, with the MPJFL claiming two winning shields and the SEJ and AFL Yarra Ranges taking the spoils in the Under-13s and
Under-16s respectively. The Queen's Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club's Next Generation Academies (NGA). AFLSE RGM John Anderson said the carnival had quickly developed a strong reputation for identifying the next wave of talent emerging through the junior system. "The Regional Junior Championships have become a very important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as selection on AFL and AFLW lists, " Anderson said. "It was fantastic to see so many up-andcoming young footballers putting themselves to the test against the best players from other leagues. "Congratulations to all the leagues, their coaches, support staff, parents and players for their commitment to what was a fantastic car-
nival played in great conditions at three of the best venues in the region. "I would like to wish all the players the best of luck as they look towards higher honours in their football journey." This year's carnival was proudly supported by SEDA College, where Year 11 and 12 students complete their senior secondary education immersed in the sport industry. Cavs contend at the Classic By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers have no shortage of talent coming up through their junior basketball ranks. That much is evident by simply walking into Casey Stadium on a Friday night for Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) action. The Cavs' under-12 girls team is further proof of the tremendous talent at Casey. Over the Queen's Birthday weekend, the girls competed at the National Junior Classic (NJC) - the association's first ever girls team to do so. The annual NJC sees the very best teams from across the nation battle it out for bragging rights. This year, the tournament was held at Dandenong Stadium and the Cavs weren't intimidated on the biggest stage. Not content with just making up the numbers, Casey won two of their three group games to finish second in Group C. Their lone defeat was a four-point loss to the Forestville Eagles. 50 win over Canberra was outstanding. Connolly poured in 19 points, including nine in the third quarter, to help her team to a hard-fought win. In the fight for final placings, Casey played three more games and came away with one win to finish the NJC with a 3-3 record - a great achievement and experience for a team on the rise. The team's thrilling win over Dandenong in their second last game was a true testament to the team's determination. With scores tied at 35 late in the game, the Cavs' defence stood up and held the Rangers out for the final minutes of the game as Casey went on to record an stirring 38-35 win. With all 10 players stepping on the hardwood for every game, it truly was a team effort and one that Casey Basketball followers should be extremely proud of. Emilija Dakic was an offensive weapon and led the way for the Cavs, averaging 10.5 points per game, while Evelyn Connolly (8.5 points per game) and Victoria Meredith (7.33 points per game) were impressive.

A Casey local has coached a women’s deaf football team to victory when it took on its interstate rival last weekend. Coach Max Eyking, from Botanic Ridge, is also deaf and led the WDevils to win by 23 points in their second annual match. “I love getting involved in sports, especially in the deaf community,” Eyking signed through an interpreter; Amber Hae Hae. The women’s side was established in 2017 as part of Deaf Football Victoria, which started a men’s side back in 1964. “It started with the AFLW. All the women in the deaf community wanted the same equality,” Eyking said. The WDevils took on a combination of deaf women’s players from other states, who formed the Rebels. This is the 22-year-old’s first year as coach for the women’s team. Eyking’s first encounter with Deaf Football Victoria was in 2013, when he was a runner for the men’s team. Although injury kept him from playing, Eyking’s passion for football and love for deaf sport earned him the position of coach for the women’s side. The match, held in Yarraville, was a fight for the Tanya Morgan Shield - which was inaugurated in Adelaide last year. The only difference to a hearing AFL match, Eyking explained, is throughout the game, umpires wave brightly coloured flags instead of using a whistle. “Deaf people are very good with their eyes. It’s like hearing people with their ears,” Eyking said. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the primary form of communication for the team. “I’m deaf. They’re deaf. So communication is pretty effective,” Eyking said.
