Rising above By Kath Gannaway A seven-year research project focused on the recovery of Marysville after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires has seen Marysville resident David Barton conferred as a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr Barton, who survived the fires but lost his home, business and more in the fires which devastated the town and resulted in the loss of so many lives, was conferred at RMIT University on 18 May, 2018. Completed in September 2017, his thesis explored "Disaster in Relation to Attachment, Loss, Grief and Recovery: The Marysville Experience" and Dr Barton said it had been an enormously challenging task. "I can't believe it's nearly 10 years; it feels more like a couple of years ago," he said of the event that has become a time-marker in the lives of so many Victorians. Dr Barton noted that his research revealed two key findings about the recovery. "The first is in relation to people's reaction to the sudden disruption and loss of their attachment figures, and in particular to people, pets, possessions, place and participation in their community he said. As a result, Dr Barton has recognised a new phenomenon he has labelled Post Disaster Attachment Trauma (PDAT), explaining that "people may suffer serious short and longterm grief reactions to such sudden loss which may be exacerbated if vital post-disaster attachment-related searching and appraisal behaviour is blocked." The second conclusion Dr Barton noted was the level of personal and collective disempowerment experienced by individuals and the community during the recovery process. Dr Barton said that while the community was consulted about many things, they were often not actually listened to or heard. As a result, he maintains that much of the Marysville's recovery occurred in ways that the community did not necessarily support, something he said was especially true in relation to many of the rebuilt public buildings.
Dr David Barton receives his PhD award from RMIT Chancellor, Dr Ziggy Switkowski AO. "Clearly I was amazed about all the stuff being done to us, particularly the six-week lock out which I saw as being very detrimental, and the whole process around that and the so-called consultation that was happening but not being taken notice of," he said.
He is critical of the lock out and says the first thing people lost was their property rights. "This was our place, our property and we were told we could not go home," he said.
ers over time, which commenced immediately after the fires, he found that many had experienced what he had and that many were feeling the same things he was feeling.
In his thesis he says that in talking with oth-

With Winter Rains still to come, it’s time to catch it, order and build your concrete tank NOW!!!
Ph. 0260 267 021 Concrete tanks built correctly will last a life time! Terry Miller has been in the concrete tank building business for over 30 years. Being from country North East Victoria himself, Barnawartha, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems. Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because the tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo roof, concrete top or open top tanks. The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, homes can be kept cool and wet. Or if need be, the tank can be used as protection to keep cool from flames and radiant heat. Water is our most important resource, and we cannot have too much of it! So for all your water storage needs when you are thinking of installing your next tank, please call Terry for a quote on 1800 267 696 or check out our website, www.terrymillerconcretetanks.com.au. And in light of fire prone districts, we can highly recommend if you are considering your own on site water, choose a well constructed concrete water tank, as tin and plastic tanks will melt during fires!

#GoSocceroos By Kath Gannaway The backroom boys at Wild Grains Bakery in Healesville have left no doubt where their allegiances are as Australia's Socceroos travelled to Russia for their first World Cup match. Owner and Healesville Soccer Club member Joe, shared his passion with the town in the lead up to the world event.
"I just wanted to do something beautiful for something I'm passionate about," he said of the yellow and gold extravaganza of support that has blanketed the bakery façade for the past month. "It might even give us a few good vibes and we might win some of the games over there," he added. Healesville Soccer Club members, a 'unit-
Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant, Graeme Rust, has reminded people visiting the snow fields in the region to slow down when driving and bring the proper gear. The call comes after Victoria received its first taste of winter with 25cms of snow falling at Mount Donna Buang. Acting Sergeant Rust said it was important that people prepare for the conditions as they can change and deteriorate quickly. Paramount to this is anyone travelling in a two-wheel-drive vehicle should bring chains with them if they intend to drive in snowy and icy conditions. "Given the fact that there is a lot people who go up there in two-wheel-drive cars, it is important that people are prepared ... the grip for their vehicles is greatly reduced on icy and snowy roads and a lot of cars are not well equipped to attend to the snowfields," Act Sgt Rust said. He said that while people are not bound by the same checks and measures than at a snow resort such as Bt Buller, it was all the more important that people display caution and awareness. "If people go there without chains and in vehicles not capable of driving on icy and snowy roads, then we are inevitably going to be called there for a vehicle going off the edge of the road. "Make sure you make have all the appropriate equipment and gear so you can enjoy the snow without undue towing bills," he said. Last year, the highway patrol attended numerous incidents where cars slid off the side of the road. Residents can find more information about the snow fall and conditions at Mount Donna Buang by visiting the Facebook page 'Warburton info'.

Although they went down by 2 to 1 to France, The Wild Grains team, and Healesville Soccer Club will be hoping they can rise to the occasion as they face Denmark on 21 June and Peru on 27 June.
On Saturday 16 June, Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol pulled over a Holden sedan on Chum Creek Road, Healesville. A 24-year-old disqualified driver from Fawkner refused an oral fluid test and his vehicle was impounded for one month, with an impound release cost of $1280. The male has been summonsed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates court at a later date.
with the Marysville Bushfire Education Foundation, talking to many school and community groups about bushfire safety and prevention. "The Foundation is now also working with the local community and government towards the establishment of a National Bushfire Museum, Education and Research Centre to be based in Marysville." "Even though many people have had a very difficult time during their individual and collective recovery, we are now starting to see some very positive outcomes develop, and this speaks well for a bright future for both Marysville and the district as a whole," he said. "I think the observations I've made are reflective of the views (of most people) who were around at that time," he said. Dr Barton said he hopes that his findings will contribute towards improved disaster management responses benefitting post-disaster recovery. He also hopes to turn his thesis into a book so that the findings can become more widely acknowledged and understood. In terms of plans for the future, Dr Barton said that, for now, he will continue working

Local gems shine The state of
affairs Cindy McLeish MP Member for Eildon The Victorian Government is responsible for over four million hectares of parks, reserves, alpine resorts, and catchments. Thousands of Victorians and visitors to our
state use and enjoy this land, and facilities that are provided such as walking tracks, picnic and camping areas and bike trails. Few regions across our state are as gifted as the Yarra Valley when it comes to the array of parks and activities that are available to visitors and locals alike. The proper management of this land is therefore all the more important to our community. Badger Weir Picnic Ground is just one of these places where locals and visitors get out and enjoy our beautiful natural environment, but they have been locked out of the park ever since storms damaged it in October 2016.
I have been contacted by many people who are concerned that after a year and half, the park is still off limits and that the government has given no indication of when they expect it to be open. The last update to the community about the clean-up process was in August last year. This lack of communication and lack of action is not good enough. Whilst Badger Weir remains closed, increased pressure is also being placed on another local natural gem - Warburton's Redwood Forest. Currently the parking space adjacent to the forest caters for less than 20 cars. It is grossly inadequate.

Sexual offences on rise By Derek Schlennstedt The Yarra Ranges crime rate has dropped by 10 per cent over the past year, but sexual offences are on the rise, according to new figures. The Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data released in June revealed that reported crime in the Yarra Ranges municipality has dropped by 10.4 per cent from 8861 to 7937 offences from April 1, 2017, to 31 March this year. It seems the drop in crimes is a recurring trend throughout the region as many offences have recorded a similar drop. Though, crimes against the person, most notably sexual offences, continue to increase. Property and deception offences are down 16.7 per cent, despite arson and property damage offences increasing 36 and 5 per cent respectively. Speaking to the 'Mail', Acting Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland at Yarra Ranges Police said the arson increase was likely a result of the high number of burn-offs that residents had unknowingly undertaken during the fire danger period. "The Yarra Ranges has a very high enforcement for illegal burn-offs and CFA will automatically contact police if people are burningoff during the prohibition period," Act Sgt Sunderland said. "Reporting processes now are immediate and therefore you will see an increase in the arson figure." Drug offences have also dropped a considerable 32.7 per cent from 648 to 436, along with public order and security offences which also dropped 17.5 per cent. Going against the trend, crimes against the person has risen 5 per cent from 1480 to 1554. Though, assault, homicide, robbery, harassment and stalking, and abduction had all
recorded a decrease. An increase of 130 sexual offences, from 361 to 491 in the region, is the primary influence of the increase in crimes against the person. Speaking to the 'Mail', Jenny Jackson, Executive director at Eastern Domestic Violence Centre (EDVOS), said that while the increase in sexual offences was disappointing, it was encouraging to see that reporting had increased, as well as efforts around identifying it within the community. "It's horrific that it's happening, but what we noticed with domestic violence is the more the community came out and reported it; the more confident about coming out," she said. "That may well be the case with sexual assault." Ms Jackson said that both EDVOSS and Eastern Centre against Sexual Assault (ECASA) had improved their services in identifying sexual offences and regularly worked closely with Police. Acting Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland at Yarra Ranges police also echoed Ms Jackson sentiments. "Certainly at EDVOS there's an increased willingness to report sexual assault from a partner," Ms Jackson said. "We have in the outer east a very, very proactive family violence unit who have been vigorously following up on reports of sexual assault both within a relationship and outside of one so it's not a big surprise that sexual offences have gone up, but that's because we have two very active police units in addition to EDVOSS and ECASA." This article discusses sexual assault. If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or EDVOS on 9259 4200 or go to edvos.org.au. In an emergency, call 000.
In the last year the crime rate in the Yarra Ranges has decreased 10 per cent, though sexual offences are on the rise.

Q&A
with Mail cartoonist Danny Zemp
What is something people generally don't know about you? They mistake me from being from Sweden but I'm from Switzerland. What is one of your most memorable moments? Probably be coming to Australia. What would your final meal be? I only eat because it's essential to survive. Whatever comes up on the day I suppose? It could be vegetables, a lump of meat, it honestly doesn't matter. What has been your favourite piece of work to create to-date? I'm actually quite proud of the extension we did for my wife's dental studio. I'm not a builder, but we built it and it looks really nice. Some friends helped me, and we used recycled building material, so it's always satisfying when you can reuse something. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? It would've been nice to see a dinosaur hopping around, that would be pretty memorable, though it would have to be with David Attenborough ... imagine history through his voice What would you say has been a passion in your life? Life itself ... we have a bit of property, a bunch of goats and we're looking after them so that's a bit of a passion, and of course cartooning. From where do you draw inspiration? Everyone. For caricature, or cartoon it is everyday life. I could just sit out there in a coffee shop and watch people; the way they dress, the way they walk, the way they interact, it's so fascinating those little idiosyncrasies. I don't look up to famous people to inspire me; rather I take a snippet out of everyone. It's like you're building your own Frankenstein. What is your favourite television show? At the moment, Gruen on ABC.
In response to Sid Horner's rebuttal 'Wishes of the community ignored' ('Mail', 12 June), I wish to make some further observations. Firstly, there is no reference in my letter to 'the minority' and, therefore, this is a misrepresentation of what I wrote; Mr Horner, however, refers to 'a clear majority'. This would be the majority of local respondents to the Engage Victoria consultation, not the majority of residents as has been implied. Of equal importance is the misleading statement about the community members on the working group. Initially, five residents were appointed to represent Don Valley; an additional resident was added to the group; if I remember correctly, at the request of Mr Horner and Mr Rick Houlihan. Kate Warne, Don Valley
CARTOON
The Mail''s resident cartoonist, Danny Zemp. 156206 What three guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Albert Einstein to see how smart he really is, Brian Cox because he's fascinating and I like his voice, and I would love to see Florence, from Florence and the Machine ... I just like voices in general. What are you working on right now? I was just shifting some logs to be milled up. I've got an old 72 Bedford Telstra truck and it lifts those logs; then it's finishing off this week's cartoon.
Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
Is there a new medium that you've been exploring or would like to explore in the future? I wouldn't mind dipping my toes into animation, but the reality is you're wasting days after days after days working on a few seconds of an animation. It is an interesting aspect though as you can tell the story with facial expressions in motion and that's fascinating to me. Do you see the world in caricature? I can, it's not hard to do.

Public meeting on hub By Kath Gannaway Residents of Old Warburton are taking affirmative action, calling a public meeting on the proposed Warburton Mountain Bike Destination project, aimed, they say, at ensuring broader community consultation on the project. The Old Warburton Residents' Association (OWRA) was formed following the release of detailed maps of the proposed trails, the majority of which they say will be in and around 'Old Warburton' and have a detrimental impact on local residents. Yarra Ranges Council have announced a number of Community Drop-in Sessions throughout June where residents will have the opportunity to speak with a number of people from the project team who can answer questions about the trails, environment, heritage and other issues. Spokesman for OWRA Damien Flynn says however that their group believes the drop-in sessions are no substitute for a public meeting at which a broad range of issues can be brought out into the open in an open community forum. "We feel there has not been much of an opportunity for residents to voice their grievances and our experience of the consultation so far it that it has been very poor and that (Yarra Ranges) Council is not interested in what we have to say," he said. "In fact, we have found they are reluctant to give us information." Mr Flynn said although the process was started two years ago, their members believe that a lot of people in Warburton are unaware of the scale of the project and how it will affect them. "We want to have an open discussion between residents so we can get this out in the open." O'Shannassy Ward Cr Jim Child rejected the

we're having the drop in sessions were people can see all the mapping, can have one on one (discussion), or, if they want to, can have a group of people speak to all the experts. "To me that is far better than any public meeting." Asked about accusations that the drop-in sessions represented a 'divide and conquer' strategy, Cr Child said there was 'some com-
mentary', mainly from Old Warburton residents. "They are quite entitled to have their opinion, but this is crown land that we're investigating. We have some proposals there as far as trails are concerned and we're seeking community input into those trails and the location." Cr Child reiterated the Council's reassurance that the Old Warburton Cemetery which had previously had trail markers on it was no longer on the map, but said another area which was a registered heritage site could be managed with an appropriate management plan. "We will have to have permission from Heritage Victoria in relation to putting that plan together and then go through an appropriate planning process," he said. OWRA has launched a petition to local MPs proposing that Old Warburton is not an appropriate place for mountain bike trails due to risks to the environment, likely damage to significant historic sites and loss of residents' amenity. The Council's drop-in sessions are on Tuesday, 26 June at Yarra Junction Community Link at 9.30am to 11.30am; Wednesday, 27 June at Montrose Town Centre - 4.30pm to 6.30pm; Thursday, 28 June at Warburton Mechanics Hall - 5pm to 7pm; Friday, 29 June at Wesburn Park Reserve - 2pm to 4pm and Saturday, 30 June at Mac Sparke Oval in Warburton - 1pm to 3pm. Oh ... those French girls! By Kath Gannaway
Wilma and Dinah Rachor in the original premises that housed the laundry; circa 1926. A hydro-extractor (spinner) and an ironer followed to keep pace with the growing demand. The business was classed as an essential service during the war. The front section of the laundry was built during the latter part of the war. At that time all the machinery was run by steam from a big wood-fired boiler. At around this time the name of the laundry was changed from "Rachors" to "The Continental Laundry". The French girls were in their teens when in 1948 the business branched out into dry cleaning and the name was changed to French's Laundry. Reminiscent of its beginnings, the laundry ran trucks to Eildon to cater for the laundry of the workers building the Eildon Weir as well as servicing the burgeoning guest house era of the '50s, not only in Healesville but around Marysville, Warburton and the Dandenongs. Beryl says it was a good life, growing up in Healesville. They went to Healesville State School and then to Lilydale Elementary School, pitching in at the laundry after school.

did, ... but nothing drastic ever happened to us," she said. Church youth clubs, Friday night dances and enjoying the latest offerings of the local theatre group, were all part of their childhood and youth. The girls have stayed close, despite living in different parts of the state, and the opportunity to get together for little Dulcie's 80th, was a highlight of their shared octogenarian era. "It's a pretty good effort when you think about it, that we've all stayed so close, and can get together even now," Beryl said.

"We all had to put our effort into it. When we came home from school we had to go to the laundry and we had to do other house work,' Beryl explained, adding that labour was hard to come by because of the war. "We had boxes to stand on to take the ironed table cloths off the machines." Beryl said the girls enjoyed the freedom of a small country town among other things traipsing around the bush on Jeffs Hill and Robyn Parade in wildflower season. "We had sleds made out of corrugated iron, and when I think about some of the things we

The French girls were not born in Healesville, but their DNA is solidly entwined in the town's heritage and social life. Elaine, Beryl, Isla, Leona and Dulcie are now all part of a beautifully inclusive club - the French Octogenarians. When the youngest, Dulcie, celebrated her 80th earlier this year, the girls got together and, as always there was plenty to reminisce over. All were born in Deniliquin where their mum, Wilma French (Rachor) had the five girls in six years. Wilma and their dad, Irvine French, moved in 1941 to Healesville where their grandparents Wilhelm and Dinah Rachor had operated a laundry since for almost 20 years. They lived in Temora House, now beautifully restored, but according to Beryl (Hort) a basic family home in those days which her grandfather had renovated when he came to Healesville. "There were just three rooms where the laundry was, and a spare room. "We slept top to tail all in one room together," Beryl recalls of special times with her sisters. The laundry business started from humble beginnings and became established over eight decades as an icon of the town under the Rachor/Irvine/French/Hort families. In 1924 the Maroondah Dam was being built and a flying fox took building materials from the corner of River Street and Wilson Street up to the dam. The story goes that a workman chanced on Mrs Dinah Rachor doing her washing in her backyard and asked if she would wash his clothes. His workmates soon caught on to the idea and before long the wood copper and washing troves on the Rachors' back verandah had to be upgraded to a washing machine.

First boy in 107 years! By Melissa Grant When new Yarra Ranges' resident Belinda Denney was pregnant with her third child, she had a strong inkling she'd be having a boy - but wouldn't let herself believe it. That's because it had been 107 years since a boy had been born into her side of the family. Even in the seconds after giving birth, Belinda - despite her intuition about the baby's gender - found it incredibly hard to believe her family's long record of girls had finally been broken. "I looked down three times to check and process it. I was like 'it's not a boy, oh it's a boy, it's a boy!'," the young mum said. "I looked up to (husband) Tom and he just broke down in tears. There were midwives crying as they knew the story as well." Jack Thomas Denney entered the world on 3 May, 2017, after 17 girls and a number of miscarriages over four generations. Jack was the first boy born on the maternal side of Belinda's family tree since her grand uncle (her nanna's older brother) in 1910. Belinda and her husband Tom had resisted the temptation to find out the gender during the pregnancy, as they had done with their two girls Harlie, 5, and four-year-old Indie. However, it was much harder as this time the couple had taken steps to conceive a boy. They only decided to try after seeing a geneticist, amid concerns there was a reason not a single male had been born for so long. "I was nervous trying for a boy because in our minds the boys were the miscarriages. We were really nervous - should we try it and risk a miscarriage?" Belinda said. "In the end, we thought we'll do it - we'll see what happens." The Denneys researched how they could boost their odds of having a boy, and followed some theories including the Shettles Method
Jack Denney with mum Belinda, dad Tom and sisters Indie (left) and Harlie. 180011 Pictures: Rob Carew - a concept that claims timing is crucial in determining a baby's gender. They weren't convinced any of these things would give them a boy, but thought it would be fun to try. "We were happy either way with a boy or a girl," Belinda said. The couple fell pregnant quickly and soon enough Belinda started to think she may be carrying a son. This time, she was carrying lower and rounder, experienced morning sickness, had a very active baby and didn't put on much extra weight. Belinda didn't go into labour until about a
week after her due date, but it was worth the wait. She had her boy. Looking back on the pregnancy, Belinda said it was funny they couldn't decide on a girl's name but only ever had one name for a boy. Belinda wanted to name her son after her grandfather Jack Thomas, which was fitting given the first-born son in her husband Tom's family is traditionally given the father's name as a middle name. More than a year later, the Denneys - who are currently renovating their dream home in Upwey - still can't believe they have a son. - For the full story, check out the winter edition of Yarra Ranges Kids.
The family's story features in the 2018 winter edition of Yarra Ranges Kids. 181964

CIRE COMMUNITY DINING
Connecting our families Cire Services and the Shire of Yarra Ranges are excited to announce their first free community dinner. The dinner will be held later this month at Cire's Yarra Junction Outside School Hours Care service (OSHC - or affectionately referred to as OSH). Director of Cire Outside School Hours Care Melissa Saaghy-Walsh explained that families will be able to enjoy a hot, nutritious, healthy meal, freshly prepared by Cire OSHC children and qualified childcare educators. "These dinners will have a strong focus on delicious, healthy meals and use fresh, seasonal, local ingredients," Ms Saaghy-Walsh said. "Here in the Yarra Valley, we're so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful fresh produce ranging from strawberries, apples, potatoes, berries, meats, eggs and so much more. This wonderful selection of wholesome, local produce will assist us with menu options as well as support local businesses." The dinners will be held once a month and are open to all families in the community with children ranging in age from newborn to 14 years old. "Community Dinners are a great way for families from all over the valley to not only experience a beautiful meal together but provide a wonderful opportunity to meet others from within this great community of ours," Ms Saaghy-Walsh explained that the initiative arose following discussions with families from the area. "It was highlighted that families, in general, are very busy balancing work and family time, with the adults especially struggling to find time for themselves," Ms Saaghy-Walsh said. "So in launching this community initiative, we hope that families can turn this community dinner into a monthly event to relax and enjoy,

healthy - they will only experience how super yummy the dinner is!" Ms Saaghy-Walsh said. The dinners are free of charge and parents and children will be invited to give feedback and asked for menu ideas for future meals. "We encourage the community to get involved and help us make this a monthly family calendar event that everyone looks forward

ENTERTAINMENT
Catprint does it in one act By Kath Gannaway Warburton's Catprint Theatre is pushing the envelope with their next production, a series of five Tennessee Williams one act plays. The plays, are among the most obscure of the over 70 plays written by Williams and include two Australian premiers. It's an exciting departure from Catprint's usual genre and one that producer Claire Bamford says will not only bring four directors to the stage, but utilise the diverse talents of the group's cast members. Claire is directing 'The recluse and his guest' and 'Steps must be gentle', Mark Brereton will direct 'Adam and Eve on a ferry', Emma Mills is tackling 'Hello from Bertha' and Rose Griggs will wear sit in the director's chair for 'Mr Paradise'. "It's interesting to read and work with works of Williams that are not quite so well known and we're all enjoying it," Claire said. "We've done a lot of comedies and other types of plays which we love doing, but it's great to be doing something different. Claire said she has read a number of Williams' plays over the years but for various reasons as a theatre company they have not been suitable for Catprint. "We thought by doing five one act plays, we had the opportunity to pick plays we could do successfully. "Our criteria is our ability to put on each play to a standard we are happy with and which the audience will enjoy." The plays are set in different locations with different types of characters with the shortest 15 minutes and the longest 45 minutes. "We are hoping that the audience really enjoys the program and we think it's going to be

"In each show we've endeavoured to have something really special about it, whether it's the lighting, costumes or something else that just makes it extra lovely." Something the entire Catprint team is excited about is that two of the plays have not been performed in Australia before.
The process of getting permission for the scripts required a bit more than the usual application for licence and in the end they were able to get permission from the university where the original transcripts are held. "At the end of the day, we have something the audience will never have been before, and that's quite special," Claire said.
An evening with Tennessee Williams will be at the Arts Centre Warburton on June 6, 7 and 8 and at The Memo in Healesville on June 14. Tickets are $25 full, $22.50 concession and early bird tickets at $19.50 are available until 23 June. Phone 1300 368 333 for enquiries or email boxoffice@yarraranges.vic.gov.au .
Jones and Grabowsky move into more intimate places Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky.
Secrets and pastry in pies The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Starring Lily James and Michiel Huisman Rated PG Adapted from the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society follows Juliet Ashton (Lily James), a writer who, in 1946, investigates the island of Guernsey, a British territory that fell under German occupation during the Second World War. The performances are excellent, James is a sensitive, deeply charismatic lead, and the film subverts its cozy small-island ambience with an intriguing mystery plot. In her research, Juliet uncovers scandalous secrets about the island's past under Nazi occupation. These revelations are steadily-paced and challenge our assumptions, casting the characters in new, morally grey lights and revealing compassion and mailcommunity.com.au
prejudice in unexpected places. The film elegantly illustrates how good things can emerge from crisis and pain can last long after the conflict is over. My only issue with Guernsey concerns some unbalanced narrative threads. The literary society of the title, established as a ritual of comfort and private resistance by the islanders, serves as little more than a jumping-off point for the mystery story. Juliet develops a gratifying, trusting friendship with Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman), the society's founder, but their eventual romantic connection feels abrupt, and Juliet's running romance with Mark (Glen Powell), her American boyfriend, feels very disconnected from the plot. While its plot needed some trimming, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie society is still a charming drama with poignant depth. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Based on their new album featuring a survey of intimate ballads, Provenance showcases the superlative craftsmanship of platinum-selling legendary singer Vince Jones and multi-ARIAwinning pianist Paul Grabowsky. Provenance marks a renewed collaboration between this pair of Australian music legends after decades apart. It also describes the music: ballads that showcase the essential elements of their craft, fundamentals that have been the foundations of their astonishing careers, pared down to an intimate combination of piano and voice (and occasionally piano and flumpet - a hybrid of trumpet and flugelhorn). Experience this sumptuous live concert of classic songs, across a variety of genres from original works like their 1980s Rainbow Cake to John Lennon and Yoko Ono's iconic Oh My Love. Jones and Grabowsky will be at Burrinja in Upwey on Friday, 22 June, and at The Memo in Healesville on Friday, 29 June.

Council footing bill again By Peter Douglas, Kath Gannaway For the second time in just over three months, Yarra Ranges Council has approved additional funding to balance a shortfall for a major project. In March, council approved more than $3 million in further funds for the Civic Centre redevelopment. Yarra Ranges Council, at its 12 June meeting, now has backed an additional $400,000 to continue the anticipated Monbulk Community Sports Pavilion project. The project went out to tender last year, with four companies all coming in above budget. Ultimately, in addition to its initial $1 million commitment, council will put up the additional $400,000, which will see Rodine Australia Pty Ltd construct the project for almost $3.5 million. Deputy Mayor, Cr Tony Stevenson, said council owed it to the community to see the project through to completion. "This project has been years in the planning; these things don't just happen overnight. There has been a lot of work by the community," Cr Stevenson said. "$200,000 has been raised by the community; the community has played a very important role." Cr Stevenson noted that in November, $1 million was confirmed through the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs fund. He said all involved have tried to ensure a cost-effective project. "We have still reached a point where corners have had to be but, but the building has not been compromised," Cr Stevenson said. "It came as quite a shock to very experienced people involved (with council), who had never seen tenders come in so far above the budget ... the gap between the budget set and when it went out to tender. "I think we have to help Monbulk ... it was a pretty good effort for Monbulk to raise $200,000. In the long-term, it will return to us."
Cr Fiona McAllister has spoken out about a theme of projects coming in above budget. Speaking on behalf of the Monbulk and District Community Opportunities Working-group (MADCOW), President Aimee te Boekhorst said the project deserved council support. "The community project has been in the making for over seven years. It is a very needed and very welcome addition to our town," she said. "The whole Monbulk community has worked hard together to raise an incredible $200,000 towards the building and will also be contributing further in terms of fit-out. "This facility will not only support the football, netball and cricket club, it supports community events through its large function room and commercial kitchen." Ms te Boekhorst said, once complete, the

facility will support the development of girls', and eventually women's, football. "We have demonstrated the interest of usage by over 20 local groups. Since we started talking about this project, it has been a buzz in the town," she said. "This has been a journey for our town and we are just looking forward to bringing this change." Despite the positivity surrounding the project, councillors Fiona McAllister and Jim Child, although supporting the motion, questioned another project coming in above budget. Cr McAllister said she needed her objection to be heard, citing the Civic Centre shortfall. "This is the second time in as many months an item asking for 10% over what it is budgeted
for. It disturbs me greatly," Cr McAllister said. "We can justify it away, but we have a policy and we make decisions about how we spend money. "I think, this trend, we need to find a way where we don't have these projects coming back to us and asking for an additional 10%." Cr Child said he would be voting for the motion, too, but agreed with Cr McAllister. "We are in a space where construction costs are accelerating all the time, but I think when we go out to tender ... we probably have to look at this in a better way," Cr Child said. Cr McAllister, at council's Tuesday 27 March meeting, voted against the increase in budget for the Civic Centre works. At the time, she said the extra funds should be viewed in terms of how it could be used to help the community. "While I think, in the scheme of things, $2 to $3 million doesn't sound like much, but I think about the bang for our buck we get from investing back into our community," Cr McAllister said. Concerns about a Civic Centre blow-out were raised back in December 2017, with Cr Tim Heenan flagging that possibility. "I just hope it will be value for money and the community space and office space will serve its purpose well into the future," Cr Heenan said. Initial budget funding sources for Monbulk Community Sports Pavilion: Yarra Ranges Council - $1,000,411; Federal Government - The Community Development Grant Program ($600,000); State Government - Growing Suburbs Fund ($1,000,000); State Government - Community Sports Infrastructure Fund Election Commitments ($600,000); Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group ($200,000).

The Tigers top the table By Cameron Hutchison Round 8 was played in cold, slippery conditions; all teams and supporters had to dress for wintery conditions. There were some big winners and some surprise losers over the weekend. In Division 1, Upwey-Tecoma have taken over the mantel on top of the ladder with a one-game buffer, snapping at their heels are five sides only one-game shy in equal second spot. In Division 2, Yarra Glen are still undefeated on top, one-and-a-half games clear of the opposition. The Winners in senior football: Emerald, Healesville, Mount Evelyn, Upwey-Tecoma, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen, Gembrook-Cockatoo, Seville and Yarra Junction. A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Wandin, Monbulk Hawks, Warburton-Millgrove, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Yea, Kinglake and Yarra Junction. Division 1 Seniors Football Emerald 19.21.135 d Warburton Millgrove 8.7.55 Emerald secured their third win for the season after a big win over Warburton. They got off to a great start, kicking five goals to one in the first and had set the scene for the rest of the day. Warburton came back in the second, but the margin was still 32 points at half-time. Emerald were busy in front of goals in the third, with 12 scoring shots to three and now had an unbeatable lead of 45 points going into the last. They hit the scoreboard with 6.6 to 1.2 in the last to come home comfortable winners. Emerald Best: J. Rich (1 goal), J. Pedder (7 goals), N. Jansen (3 goals), C. Thomsen, A. Quirk (1 goal), G. McCarthy (4 goals) Warburton-Millgrove Best: T. McKail, M. Read, A. White (5 goals), S. Andueza, J. Lee, S. Noonan Healesville 11.21.87 d Monbulk 13.8.86 Healesville have pushed Monbulk back to seventh, while they now share second spot with four other teams but are sixth on percentage. Monbulk certainly started well, kicking 7.2 to 3.7 in the first and at home would have been happy with a 19-point lead at quarter time. Healesville turned it on in the second, holding Monbulk scoreless while they kicked 4.4 to now have the lead at half time by nine points. They extended that to 19 points at the final break and were looking like they were home. Monbulk took control in the last and gained the lead with a few minutes to go. Then, Healesville's Savage stepped in and snapped Healesville's only goal for the quarter, which was enough to give them a one-point win. Healesville Best: N. Mende, J. Savage (2 goals), M. Jeffery (3 goals), C. Adams, L. Daly, T. Costigan Monbulk Best: H. Gordic, C. Griffiths, S. Williams (2 goals), K. Fletcher (2 goals), P. Barge, J. Rak Mt Evelyn 10.12.72 d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.14.56 In the biggest upset of the day, Mount Evelyn found the form they have been looking for against Olinda on Saturday. Mt Evelyn are now level with Olinda on the ladder and are well in the hunt for the final five. The first quarter was a low-scoring affair and goals were hard to come by, but Mt Evelyn had the advantage by seven points. Olinda found the goals in the second, kicking 5.4 to 2.2 to swing it around and take the lead by 13 points going into half time. It was scrappy footy in the third, with only two goals being kicked but Olinda had a 14-point lead as they headed for home. Olinda went to sleep in the last and could only manage one behind while Mt Evelyn blitzed kicking 5.1 to storm home. Mt Evelyn Best: A. Gibbons, T. Scopel, J. Beamish (1 goal), C. Urquhart, B. Lord, M. Condello (2 goals) Olinda Ferny Creek Best: L. Hill, J. Rankin, O. Raszkiewicz, M. Hottes, R. Cottam-Starkey (1 goal), D. Noorda Upwey-Tecoma 20.13.133 d Wandin 9.12.66 Upwey Tecoma are ladder leaders after a polished performance against Wandin. Wandin got the early break kicking 5.3 to 3 straight in the first. Upwey-Tecoma came to play in the second, kicking 8.3 to 3.2 to go into half-time with a 16-point lead. They did not relax in the third and increased their lead to 38-points gomailcommunity.com.au
Healesville and Monbulk players were tough in the clinches early.
Woori Yallock dominated Belgrave for most of the afternoon. ing into the last. Wandin could only kick five behinds in the last, while Upwey blazed away with 5.6 to come home big winners. They got away early, kicking 5.8 to 1.1 in the first and it looked like a long day for the Magpies. The second quarter was an even 30 minutes, but Woori Yallock had a lead of 42 points at halftime. Woori Yallock had the ball on a string in the third, with 9 scoring shots to 2 and the game was over at three-quarter time. Woori Yallock put the pedal down in the last, kicking 6.3 to 3 straight to be big winners for the day. Woori Yallock Best: A. Marsh (4 goals), J. Matthews (5 goals), K. Thompson, M. Thornton has been unlucky in their games this season but to their credit continue to fight out the full 120 minutes. Yarra Glen got off to a blinder kicking 10.3 in the first and a lead of 61 points at quarter time. They extended that lead to 105 points at the main break. The lead increased to 134 points at the last break and with a 9-goal last quarter. Yarra Glen Best: R. McDermott (11 goals), D. Hurley (3 goals), J. Clare (1 goal), W. Kristelly (5 goals), J. Gembrook held Yea goalless in the first and had a lead of 19 points at quarter time. The lead extended to 28 points at half-time and Yea were still without any majors. Yea won the third quarter, kicking 3 goals to 2.3 but the margin did not reduce enough to really give them a chance. It was a tough last quarter with only 2 goals being kicked but it was Gembrook's win at the end of 120 minutes. Gembrook Best: T. Lockyer (2 goals), D. Leversha, M. Firrito, C. Bastow, D. South, D. Kinglake had the slimmest of leads at quarter time, but Seville were wasteful in front of goal. Kinglake still held the lead at half time by five points, but Seville had had 15 scoring shots to 10 and 12 of them were behinds. They regrouped in the third, kicking 4.6 to 3.2 to arrest the lead by 5 points at the final change. Kinglake could only manage 4 behinds in the last while Seville finally straightened up a bit and kicked 3.3 to come home winners by 22 points. Seville Best: P. Bailey, A. Wind, D. Groen, G. They got the jump in the first, kicking 4.6 to 1 behind to really have control of this game at the quarter-time break. They piled on 6.2 to 1.3 in the second and went into the main break with a 58-point buffer. The pressure was maintained in the third, with another 6 goals and the lead
was now 93 points. Yarra Junction either ran out of steam or Alexandra got a second wind in the last as the Rebels finished with 4.1 to the Eagles' 1 behind. This is not the way the Eagles team, which are potentially playing in finals, wants to finish off. Luckily for the Eagles, as much as Alexandra tried the margin was too big. Yarra Junction Best: T. Warburton golf results By Ron Hottes
The Under 11s players enjoyed a great day of weekend sport.
Club's highs, lows A mixed bag for the Yarra Valley Soccer club with only two out of the five teams getting a positive result. We start off with the Under 11s as they travelled down to face City Life. They managed a fantastic 5-1 win as they got their first win of the season. Two goals apiece to Fergus and Harry, and a goal to Alexm capped off a fantastic day for the Under 11s, whose hard work and training is clearly paying off! The Under 13s had a rougher day at the of-
fice, suffering a heavy loss despite a good performance. A win is just around the corner for the team as they improve at training each week. The reserves played top of the table Lilydale in a 2-0 loss that will be hard to swallow. Despite having a lot of the ball, and a lot of chances, they just couldn't take their chances as Lilydale pounced on Yarra Valley's mistakes. The senior men's gave up a one goal lead against St Hilary's in a 3-1 loss, a game the boys would rather forget.
Mistakes at the back and ineffectiveness up front means it's three without a win for the Yarra Valley boys, who will be training hard this Wednesday as they look to regain their lost form. The best senior result of the day by far was the performance by the womens team! The ladies grinded out a 1-0 win against St Hilarys, with returning player Katrina Briggs scoring in the first couple of minutes to claim the ladies first win for the season. The first of more wins to come for this team that improve each week.

Wednesday 13 June: Stableford: The daily winner, on a fairly average-scoring day, was Mr Consistent, Steuart Hawke, who matched his handicap with 36 solid points. The r/up prize went to Mario Devincentis, with 34, snaring that position on a c/back. Balls went down to 32. NTP winners were Max Carvill (3rd), Happy Gilmore (9th) and to Peter Bell (11th). Saturday 16 June::Par: It was clearly 'junior-day' at Warburton on Saturday! The club, thanks to Tony Bickley and Des Ray, has a vibrant junior development program, which was 'to the fore'. Angus Smith broke 80 for the first time in his fledgling career to win the day with an excellent +4. Congrats, Smithy! ( And, just to add to the trend, Angus's great mate, Liam Kay, finished outright 5th with a creditable +2. So, go and collect a ball, young man!). The r/up, on a massive c/back, was 'lucky' Barry Maltman, also with a +2! Balls got all the way down to -1. Finally, the NTP winners totalled only 3, That is because, in a rare occurence, Shane Campbell grabbed 3 of them - on the 5th, 9th and 15th! Great work, Cambo! The other two winners were Dan Henskens on the third & Angus Smith on the ever-challenging 15th! ( A day you won't forget, young Angus!)

MOTORING
Jones a starter for show
Just the classics at the famed Motorclassica event. 181886
1187559-RC24-15
Australia's own 1980 World Driver's Champion Alan Jones will celebrate 90 years of the Australian Grand Prix at this year's Motorclassica at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on 12-14 October. Jones and his father, Stan, are the only father-son combination to have won the Australian Grand Prix in its nine-decade history. "Not enough Australians realise the significance of our Grand Prix event and its rich history," Motorclassica event director, Paul Mathers, said. "It's the second oldest in the world and has been won by some of the most significant racing drivers of the past 100 years, including the likes of our own Jack Brabham and Alan Jones. "I am delighted to be welcoming Alan Jones to Motorclassica and have no doubt his involvement will add real depth to our tribute to the Australian Grand Prix." Motorclassica is Australia's premier collector and classic car and motorcycle event, incorporating the Australian International Concours d'Elegance and - in contrast - the very latest contemporary sports and performance models from the prestige manufacturers. Among the special events planned for the 2018 event is a tribute to Australia's most historic motor race. To celebrate his then-recent win in the World Driver's Championship, Jones brought his title-winning Williams-Cosworth FW07 Formula 1 car to Melbourne's Calder track in November 1980 and dominated the Australian Grand Prix event. Some 21 years earlier, his father, Stan, drove a Maserati to victory in the very same event at Longford (Tasmania). "I am very proud of my achievements in winning the World Driver's Championship, of cours, but winning the Australian Grand Prix is right up there, too, because it's something my father also achieved, and that makes it very special to me," Alan Jones said. "Motorclassica's recognition of the event's importance and history is much appreciated, and I am looking forward to being a part of it and sharing my memories." Alan Jones will make regular appearances on the Motorclassica stage to talk about his father's 1959 Australian Grand Prix victory and his own success in 1980, and more broadly about his Formula 1 career. Motorclassica 2018's tribute to the world's second oldest Grand Prix event, which has run almost continuously since its inception on the closed dirt roads of Phillip Island, in 1928, will include a display of significant cars from those nine decades. Also celebrated at Motorclassica 2018 will be the fabulous cars of the Art Deco era, with a display of these most extravagant of automotive designs. "Motorclassica has always been about a celebration of the motoring lifestyle and we endeavour to broaden that every year to keep the show fresh and widen its appeal," Mr Mathers said. The 2018 Motorclassica tickets are on sale at www.motorclassica.com.au.
