A deluded Narre Warren South man has pleaded guilty to stalking a South-East-based police officer that he believed was his wife. As part of an "unhealthy obsession", Javed Sarwari, 33, insisted that he had been married to the officer for many years despite them not knowing each other, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 18 June. Sawari allegedly told a close relative that he met and fell in love with the officer while he was a "secret agent" 10 years ago, a police summary stated. Over several months last year, Sarwari attended the officer's police station requesting to see her. On one occasion, she called him after he left a message at the station. He asked her questions about whether she had children and claimed that he knew her. Another time, he asked an officer for the victim's marital status, her home address and mobile number. Two weeks later, he requested her roster times. When confronted about his delusion by close relatives, he became angry and assaulted them at their home. He flung a glass candle holder which cut a female's hand and shattered on the floor. Despite an interim intervention order, he was arrested loitering near the police station ahead of the officer's shift on 27 September. In his car were flowers, a love poem seemingly addressed to the officer and a $1799 diamond ring. According to police, his behaviour caused mental harm to the officer. It drove her into a "state of apprehension and fear" for her and
her family's safety. During Sarwari's 296 days in remand, he was medicated and had "stabilised", defence lawyer Lachlan Hocking said. Sarwari had "peace of mind", was "sleeping a lot better" and "intends to keep taking the medication", Mr Hocking said. He was to be supervised by relatives, who would ensure he remained medicated, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said before releasing Sarwari, he needed to be satisfied there were systems in place for him. He noted a psychiatric report had found there was a "reduction in the intensity of the delusional beliefs". "How do you manage this risk to the community when he still holds onto these thoughts?" Mr Vandersteen said. "Even after being in custody for 10 months his progress has not been remarkable. It has been very slow." Mr Hocking said Sarwari's tendency to "follow through" the delusion had changed since starting treatment in April. "(Before then) there had been many months when he was completely unmedicated and unhinged." Mr Vandersteen said Sarwari had "done the right thing" by pleading guilty, despite a mental impairment defence being available. The custody period was "significant" given Sarwari's limited criminal history. Mr Vandersteen said he would still consider a community corrections order as part of supervising Sarwari in the community. Sarwari was remanded for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 19 June.

Park tribute to Mick By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees Casey Council has unveiled a plan to rename Pioneers Park in central Berwick to memoralise its popular former mayor Mick Morland. At a 19 June meeting, the council proposed to rename the park as Mick Morland Reserve. Mayor Geoff Ablett said part of the park would still retain the Pioneers name - in keeping with the adjoining caf¨¦ of the same name. He said the council were keen to pay lasting tribute to Mr Morland, in recognition of his service to Rotary and the community. Cr Ablett made particular note of Mr Morland's fundraising for community projects, including the recently-built St John of God Hospital. "We hope the community support the decision in honour of a really good person. "I think it's the least we can do ... for a man who did a heck of a lot for the community." Kay Morland, who is Mr Morland's widow, said the park was a "fantastic choice". Mr Morland had been instrumental in Casey purchasing the former school grounds at Peel Street, and creating the beloved parkland, she said. "He loved the place, especially on Australia Day. "There would be thousands of people coming through, and he'd be manning the (Rotary Club of Berwick) barbecue. "I think it's absolutely perfect." The announcement comes nearly 12 months since Mr Morland's untimely death. He died after being struck by a car in Berwick on 24 June, 2017. The name change has been given in-principle approval by the state's Registrar of Geographic Names. Public submissions are open for the proposal.

A Narre Warren South man accused of possessing child exploitation material has allegedly stored footage of girls walking past his home, a court has heard. Dean Meyer, 35, pleaded guilty to knowingly possessing child pornography including explicit video of adults with children that appeared under the age of 10, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barlow told the court. Sixteen illegal images and six illegal video files were found on a computer tower, laptop and DVD disk seized by police from his home in October, police alleged. Meyer declined to be interviewed on the charge. A video of "particular concern" - though not illegal - appeared to be filmed from his master bedroom. It featured "very young girls walking past in school dresses", Lead Sen Const Barlow said. Police were also concerned that Meyer's home was surrounded by extensive CCTV equipment linked to a TV inside his home, the court heard. Meyer is awaiting sentencing for making explicit phone calls to dance studios about girl students featured on their websites in 2015-17. During the calls, he made a graphic request for sex with a girl who had been featured in dance costume on a studio's website. He was bailed for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 30 July, pending a Forensicare psychiatric report. His bail conditions include reporting to police three times a week, living in a fixed abode, not travelling interstate, no internet access other than for employment and banking purposes and not to have contact with under-18s.
Social media ‘troll’ fight in lead up to state election By Cam Lucadou-Wells A state political candidate has accused a Casey councillor of 'trolling' him and reported their offending comments to Facebook. Gary Maas, who is running for the ALP in Narre Warren South, reported persistent, repetitive comments from 'Misa Frances Quinzel' on 15 posts by Mr Maas's Facebook page. Frances Quinzel is the name of a DC Comics anti-hero, also known as Harley Quinn. The account, until recently, appeared to use a profile picture of Casey councillor Milla Gilic. It has been replaced by an image of a character from the Kill Bill movie series. Cr Gilic has not responded to Star News's enquiries on the matter. The comments attacked Mr Maas for his recent criticism of Liberal political rival Susan Serey as well as his 'local' credentials. "Just be honest and see how you fare, it would be pathetic to run your campaign on some fake agenda, seems like that's how you're gonna go
The former profile picture of Misa Frances Quinzel. about this though... it's sad, our community deserves better, a lot better. "If you think you can move down here and play the act needed to get the votes then you
aren't giving our residents enough credit, we do pay attention to our community and what goes on within it. How many years have you lived in 'Our Community' anyhow?" At one point, the comments state: "I guess we can only hope you'll be honest and forward about this." Mr Maas says he woke up one morning to find up to 15 notifications of Quinzel's comments. "When I had a look, it was the same (comment) over and over again infecting every single post on my page." He reported the "abusive" comments because they breached Facebook's guidelines for 'hate speech' and not using an authentic identity. "If you actually want to enter into a proper political debate, I'll reply. But I'm not going to when it's an obviously fake account - and particularly if you're being rude and nasty. "You wouldn't do that face-to-face so why should you be able to do that online?"
Mr Maas called on Cr Gilic to declare if she was a Liberal Party member to her electors. "She has ... misrepresented her identity through her Facebook profile in making continued and persistent political and personal attacks against me and now my campaign team. "I wonder what social media policies are in place at the City of Casey, if its elected representatives can repeatedly bully candidates and indeed other residents of the City of Casey." Mr Maas called on Liberal candidate and Casey councillor Susan Serey to declare her stance on her "friend" Cr Gilic's alleged conduct. Ms Serey said the "content and management of Mr Maas's Facebook page are clearly a matter for him". "However I regularly block and hide abusive and sexist comments from Labor members and trolls." Mr Maas said that he is renting in City of Casey, with a view to moving permanently to the area if he wins a seat at this year's State Election.

Drugs fuelled killer driver By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old Narre Warren man who drove on the wrong side of Churchill Park Road, Lysterfield with several drugs in his system and killed an oncoming driver has been jailed. Jacob Braithwaite-Deegan was on his way to work when his Hilux crossed 1.5 metres over the centre line on the 70 km/h road and struck the front right side of the victim's car, Victorian County Court judge Julie Condon said on 18 June. There was no evidence of him speeding; neither driver had braked ahead of the crash shortly after 8.30am on 20 February 2017. The other driver - a husband and father of two boys - died at the scene. "By your actions you've caused loss of life," Judge Condon told the accused.
"All too often courts are faced with the tragic consequences of young men such as yourself who fail to understand the potentially fatal ramifications of driving dangerously." In sentencing, Judge Condon said she had to deter other young men doing the same. The wife was unable to console herself given the great hole left in her and her sons' lives by the loss of her husband - who was her "best friend" and "rock", Judge Condon said. In her victim impact statement, she said part of her died on the day of the crash. Braithwaite-Deegan pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and seven counts of drug trafficking, after police seized a variety of drugs as well as $39,588.50 from his car and home. He was clearly trafficking drugs for profit,
not just to support his habit, Judge Condon said. Braithwaite-Deegan was heard to comment after the crash that he'd had a "big weekend" and was "really tired", the court heard. Another witness heard him say "I think I started dozing off". There was evidence of a "cocktail of drugs" in Braithwaite-Deegan's blood samples - including MDMA, MDA, ketamine, and metabolites of cocaine. There was not sufficient proof that the drugs were at a level that directly influenced his driving. However it was relevant to Braithwaite-Deegan's moral culpability. Another witness said she'd had to take evasive action to avoid Braithwaite-Deegan's erratic driving shortly beforehand. The accused appeared to be looking down,
she told police. Braithwaite-Deegan had no explanation for the crash. He told police he was "feeling just normal", and honestly thought the other driver may have crashed into him, Judge Condon said. The day after the crash, he was arrested and had since been in remand in adult prison. There he demonstrated remorse, leadership qualities as a mentor and role-model, and a commitment to his drug rehabilitation. He showed maturity in pleading guilty and not applying for bail but accepting his fate in custody, Judge Condon noted. Braithwaite-Deegan, who had no prior convictions, was jailed for up to four-and-a-half years, with a 34 month non-parole period. His term included 483 days in pre-sentence detention.
Scissors held to throat of ‘soft target’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Clyde North man has been jailed over an armed robbery in which he held scissors to the throat of a lone female servo attendant. Kuachjon Bieljok, now 22, told the victim "I'm very sorry to do this to you" as he pulled on a balaclava at the Traralgon service station about 6.30am on 25 September 2016, Victorian County Court judge Carolene Gwynn said during sentencing. Bieljok told the attendant not to set off alarms and requested she pour cash from the register into a white plastic bag and to open a nearby safe. When she told him she couldn't access the safe, Bieljok grabbed scissors from the counter using nearby latex gloves.
He pointed the blades at her and repeated his demand. She showed him the safe's Armaguard lock that was inaccessible to her. "Stop lying to me," he said as he pressed the point of the scissors into the attendant's neck. She opened a smaller nearby safe that was found to be empty. Bieljok fled with $278.85 from the register as well as the scissors and gloves. The victim wept as she rang triple-0. He was arrested at a Traralgon address, refused to give police his name and address and then denied the allegations during a police interview. He later pleaded guilty to armed robbery. Judge Gwynn said Bieljok had robbed a "socalled soft-target" who was entitled to feel safe
at her workplace. It was clear from the victim's statement to police that she was "terrified" by the event, the judge said. There was "little explanation" for the robbery, other than Bieljok's peer association, alcohol addiction and diagnosed intellectual disability. His IQ was assessed within the range of 6775, his thinking and reasoning skills were "extremely low" which put him at higher risk of "impulsivity". Bieljok's criminal history was blotted by bail breaches, assault, drunkenness, and driving and dishonesty offences. He was already serving a jail term of up to 33 months for an armed robbery at a Dandenong supermarket in July 2016.
At the time of that robbery and the Traralgon incident, he was on a CCO for car theft and breach of bail. The accused was born in a Kenyan refugee camp after his family fled Sudan. At age 7, he migrated to Australia with family members. He had no contact with his biological father and a "limited, if any" employment history. In sentencing on 18 June, Judge Gwynn said Bieljok had reasonable chances of rehabilitation due to being assisted by an African youth welfare group and his relative young age. She reduced Bieljok's punishment, taking into account his current jail term under the principle of totality. Bieljok was jailed for two-and-a-half years, with a non-parole period of 18 months. 1213124-EB02-16

They're committed The Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) was formed late in 2015 with an aim of ensuring that accountability, transparency and democracy is upheld in our local government. Following the council’s very negative response to the association’s establishment the CRRA has further extended and reviewed their purpose. One of the key purposes considered by the CRRA is: “To advocate in the best interests of our communities in relation to local government matters important by them. To advocate with council on matters our communities consider important.” The CRRA has considered Casey Council’s budgeted $257,000 Commit to Casey Campaign and has decided that we cannot support council in this. CRRA is strongly in favour of better roads and public transport in Casey, including extension of the Cranbourne railway line to Clyde and local area bus networks running as early as possible. CRRA believes that Councils do have a role in advocating on behalf of their constituents to state and federal government levels. However, councils should always consult properly with the broader community on such matters. CRRA also believes that a line is crossed when a campaign becomes expensive use of ratepayers’ money for political campaigning. With many Casey councillors being members of a political party and some already announcing they running as candidate for local seats in the state election to be held in November, it is not appropriate for the council to be spending anything on a campaigning. CRRA recalls the same idea to campaign to support the East West link was taken up in the year of the last state election and was roundly condemned by large numbers of residents who saw it for what it was, electioneering for councillors on community’s funds. CRRA finds the lack of clarity as to what roads and what rail works the council is calling for in most of the literature is misleading the community, most of the campaign material is just saying “Blame the State Government for the congestion on the road network in Casey.” This is untrue and omits that there was a time when the only roadworks that took place in Casey for many years was the long-running duplication of Hallam South Road that caused months of chaos through Hampton Park. CRRA will be making a submission in part relating to the Commit to Casey decision at the budget presentations. Should you wish to discuss this matter further, a representative group of the CRRA committee would be pleased to meet with you or a person from your office at your convenience. Build a bridge These rail bridges over roads will let emergency vehicles through more easily, except I suppose if it’s actually chocka with peak-hour traffic. Eventually when they are built. It is a rather slow trip to and from the city as things stand.
Having jobs out this way may certainly ease some of that road situation, I expect. For the record, the plan to house 200,000 more people in the City of Casey does seem to be happening, whatever we think. Karen Young, Casey

It is part of the federally-funded Cranbourne Region Trades Skills Centre - a joint venture between the college, Cranbourne Secondary College, Alkira Secondary College and Marnebek School. The sparked some difference of opinion, here is how they reacted online: Jamie Sibbald: Then what be a welltrained dole bludger industry is dead in Australia or join an agency get maybe one day a week of work if you're lucky never be able to get a house loan because your unable to get a full time job, yep that's a great idea. Crime rate down by 21% By Cam Lucadou-Wells On the back of extra police, Casey's official crime rate has plummeted to its lowest level since 2014. Recorded offences dropped 21.6 per cent drop in the 12 months up to 31 March 2018, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report released on 14 June. The reduction coincided with last year's rollout of extra police into growth-corridors such as Casey. It was more than double the 9.5 per cent drop in the statewide crime rate. Among the biggest reductions were burglaries (by 26.8 per cent), thefts (33.5 per cent), drug offences (22.4 per cent), weapons (17.4 per cent) and stalking, harassing and threatening behaviour (17.5 per cent). The high-harm crimes in assaults and robberies also dropped. Sobering, there were still more than 2200 as-
saults in the year period - more than 40 a week. There were 1755 burglaries and break-ins more than 30 a week. On the rise were sexual offences (up 11 per cent), and breaches of court orders such as bail and intervention orders (11.2 per cent). Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp, of Victoria Police, said there were "really good results" where additional police were sent to growthcorridors such as Melbourne's South-East. He also noted the impact of new forensics technology that quickly identified high-risk offenders using DNA and fingerprints. A significant factor in the "disappointing" rise in sexual assaults was that victims were more willing to report to police and support agencies, Dep Comm Crisp said. New sexual offences had also allowed police to further target "evil" online predators. "Social media and on-line platforms provide that sort of opportunity to engage in this type of behaviour but through the introduction of
these new offences it enables us to intervene and act before that contact becomes physical." Dep Comm Crisp said people were focused on reducing the 160 home invasions recorded in the 12-month period. Across Victoria, there were 2500 less family violence offences, including serious assaults, he noted. Police Minister Lisa Neville praised the "incredibly hard work" of police for turning around successive years of growing crime. She and Victoria Police would continue to focus on making the community safer and reducing harm. "We're not stopping. This is the start - we've still got a long way to go. "We're going to continue it going forward this quarter, the next quarter and the one after that." Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said the rising crime trend since 2011 had been "turned around".
Casey has received 31 new police as part of the State Government's recruitment drive. "More police in our community means more police patrolling the streets and more police employed in specialist roles to prevent crime and prosecute offenders - with more to come over the coming years." Opposition police spokesman Edward O'Donohue said crime in Casey had risen by 13.5 per cent since the State Government's election in late 2014 - above the state average rise of 9.5 per cent. "Casey Police have been under-resourced for far too long due to (Premier) Daniel Andrews' neglect of police numbers which saw the Police Academy a virtual ghost town for over two years." On raw figures, crime offences had doubled in Clyde and Clyde North since 2014. "That's why a Matthew Guy led Liberal National government will build a new 24-hour Clyde North police station," Mr O'Donohue said.
Councillors claim part-time wages ‘not enough’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells
taken up by council committees, council meetings, on-site meetings with residents, sports clubs and groups and other events - as well as responding to calls and emails. "It's a tell-tale sign when no one comments that you're being paid too much." Cr Crestani's stance was supported by mayor Geoff Ablett, who said councillors' base allowances should be closer to $50,000. "It is a full-time job - you could spend all day going to meetings, following up on calls, getting serious issues resolved ... "People wouldn't criticise this if they've done the job and know what it's like. Every minute of the day you have an issue on your mind." Cr Amanda Stapledon said the role was traditionally viewed as "honorary" but it had grown in its demands.
"I'm very, very honoured to be elected for Mayfield Ward but to be honest I would be pleased to be paid as a full-time role. "There's so much to be done." Victorian Local Governance Association is lobbying for an independent remuneration tribunal to set allowances for councillors. Currently, the amount is set by the Local Government Minister. VLGA chief executive Kathryn Arndt said current allowances didn't reflect councillors' roles and responsibilities and needed to be "critically examined". "It is not surprising therefore that many councillors juggle part-time professional work as well as their roles as elected representatives which places significant pressure on these individuals."

Casey councillors say their jobs have outgrown their part-time pay-packets. Their annual allowances are set the maximum allowable by the State Government at $30,223 plus expenses for travel, professional development and phone usage. Councillor Rosalie Crestani responded passionately on Facebook to reported comments by Senator Lucy Gichuhi that the minimum federal MP $200,000-plus salary was "not a lot of money". "At least you don't get paid well below minimum wages like us Councillors do," Cr Crestani posted. "Yes, we stand not for the money but the desire to serve the people. "It's just we also must pay taxes, rates and
skyrocketing energy bills (and) are expected to absorb hundreds of pages of documents in less than a week in order to make important decisions that affect thousands of our constituents." The minimum pay for Victorian MPs is $168,526, and federal backbench MPs are on just over $200,000. Cr Crestani told Star News she was juggling three jobs, raising a family as well as her councillor duties. With more "fair" pay, "councillors can give more to their community". "The expectation of people is that they want to see more of their councillors out there." She said she hadn't missed a council meeting in her four-and-a-half years' service, sacrificing holiday and family events as a result. Sometimes every night of the week was

Job seekers’ online risk By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council job applicants are unlikely to suffer "direct identity theft" as a result of a recent widespread data breach, according to a cyber-safety expert group. This month, numerous groups including City of Casey and Federation University were notified of the possible data breach involving their online recruitment provider PageUp People. In a statement on 19 June, the federal agency Australian Cyber Security Centre declared that "no Australian information may actually have been stolen" - though investigations were still ongoing.
"The ACSC emphasises that there is a significant distinction between information being accessed (which means there has been a systems breach) and information being exfiltrated by the offender." In the joint statement, IDCARE, which has since assisted PageUp clients, stated that there were "more relevant" risks as a result of the breach. These included possible phishing emails, scam calls, or specific risks due to contact information, address and workplace details being known to third parties. "At this point, direct risk of identity theft
is unlikely", IDCARE managing director Dave Lacey said. "Identity thieves typically require other forms of personal information to successfully manipulate this type of data, such as driver licence, passport, and account details, in order to obtain credit in a person's name or related acts of impersonation." Federation University, which has a campus in Berwick, has disabled its PageUp- provided online recruitment system. "The University has taken the precautionary measure ... until we receive further information from PageUp about the nature and
extent of any potential impact," a spokesman said on 14 June. Casey Council had also taken down its PageUp online recruitment system. It has advised its job applicants that their personal data may have been "compromised". PageUp says it is confident that the "most critical" data categories including resumes, financial information, Australian tax file numbers, employee performance reports and employment contracts were not affected. Job applicants' names, street addresses, email addresses and phone numbers as well as employment history and referee details may be at risk, PageUp stated.
Talking your way to success By Cam Lucadou-Wells A heavy accent costs people confidence and possibly their dream job, says a professional development coach. Aarti Royan is part of a business called The Difference Makers, which is offering an eightweek 'accent neutralisation' course for migrants. She nominates it as the number one issue for why migrants can't get ahead. "This need has been in my psyche for quite a while now. "I've encountered doctors who might lose their practices because their patients don't understand them. "In factories, things can go horribly wrong if you can't communicate clearly." The workshops don't aim to modify a person's natural accent, but focus on vowels, consonants and commonly mispronounced words, Ms Royan says. It also drills down on speech patterns, the
importance of putting stress on particular words. "It's very difficult to take an accent out," Ms Royan says. "The objective of this program is not to put on a fake accent. We want to communicate, communicate, communicate." Participants are encouraged to socialise, network and take every opportunity to develop their communication skills. "When you communicate well, you understand better as well. "Whether you're a qualified professional or not, it can cause you to lack confidence to feel not at your best at a business meeting, family gathering or a job interview." The course runs on Tuesdays, 24 July-11 September, 7-9pm at Bunjil Place library. Book by 30 June at https://www.trybooking.com/ WDQH Details: team@diffmakers.net or 0409 019 365.

at the Cancer Council Victoria Relay annual awards. In its six years, Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life has raised more than $400,000 for cancer services and research. It features a 24-hour relay with teams of cancer survivors and supporters raising thousands in donations. This year's event aims to raise $70,000, which will include the return of the King of the Wing. It is at Casey Fields track-and-field on 17-18 November. Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life organisers were clucking with delight after winning an innovation award for their unique 2017 cancerresearch fundraiser. The relay's King of the Wing competition challenged diners to scoff as many wings as they could in 10 minutes. Memorably, some of the diners ruined some good suits as they enthusiastically splashed marinade during the frenzy. "The crowd got involved, cheering them on," says committee member Brooke Hunter.
"It brought that community spirit. We want everyone to feel they're on the same team." Its sense of fun also won over valuable sponsors, such as Ray White Cranbourne. "It gave the relay a fresh take." Being a pro-health event, it had to be stressed that sort of food should normally be eaten in moderation. "It was why we used the slogan - it's about the bucks not the clucks. "We gave it a healthy twist by baking the chicken wings. On 2 June, the spirited contest was recognised with an Embracing Innovation award

Casey Council has largely resisted a push for smaller subdivisions in its northern bushfireprone areas. In its proposed Planning Amendment C198, the council largely retained minimum subdivision sizes of 0.4 hectares in leafy parts of Lysterfield South, Narre Warren North, Endeavour Hills and Harkaway. Residents had pushed for re-zoning to halving the minimum lots of 0.2 hectares. However, Casey has agreed to smaller lots in an up-market housing estate to the south-east of Heatherton Road and Hallam North Road, in response to "many" submissions including a 51-signature petition. It allow smaller lot sizes in housing estates surrounding Fox Road due to a majority of favourable submissions. Both are subject to an investigation on connection to sewerage services, and a possible introduction of a Significant Landscape Overlay. Councillor Rosalie Crestani said the council had been responsive to what the majority of residents wanted in their areas. "I believe council officers achieved the right balance. We've been very thorough about it. "Keep in mind some of the subdivisions may not happen for years to come." Cr Crestani said further subdivisions were knocked back in areas next to bushfire-prone areas. "We can never forget that we're surrounded by fire-prone areas in Four Oaks Ward. Safety is paramount and we're ensuring we're governing it well. "When you're talking about doubling the density of housing, it throws up extra challenges." Planning Panels Victoria is expected to hear upon the proposal in coming weeks.

Wonder dog life-changing By Melissa Grant Irwin the Labrador Retriever has transformed the life of Berwick boy Ollie Hurst. Since forming their very special bond two years ago, Ollie - who has autism - has become much happier, his anxiety has dramatically reduced and his communication has significantly improved. The changes have been so profound that mum Gillian wants to thank the community for bringing Irwin into their lives and “pay it forward” to help other children, like Ollie, be gifted their own companion dog. “Ollie is very, very different to how he was,” Gillian said. “Before we got Irwin, Ollie didn’t speak in front of anyone he didn’t really know and now he’s a chatterbox. “We really just want other families to have their lives made easier.” Ollie, 9, was diagnosed with autism five years ago after Gillian and husband Jack noticed he was shy and wouldn’t make eye contact with people outside their family. He was also having meltdowns triggered by small changes to his routines, couldn’t sit still and was struggling to sleep. After Gillian met a companion dog in training she was put in touch with Dogs for Kids with Disabilities, an organisation which specialises in training dogs for children with autism and other developmental disorders. After an assessment, Irwin was matched with Ollie and the pair have been inseparable since. For the full story on Irwin and Ollie’s special

King of the board makes all the right moves By Rob Kelly Chess is a game of strategy and logic. For centuries, it has been played and enjoyed by millions of people around the world, but there are few people in the 21st Century that play the ancient game as well as Berwick Lodge Primary School’s vice school captain. His name is Ashwin and he has participated in dozens of chess competitions around Victoria (and Australia) and won numerous medals and trophies to prove it. Ashwin started playing Chess in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. “I started to play chess after watching my brother and mum play,” Ashwin said. “I become interested in it and I picked it up fast. My mum saw talent in me and encouraged me to play more and more. “After attending chess coaching sessions, I was ready to play in tournaments.” Ashwin’s older brother attended the tournaments with him and observed his game strategy. As Ashwin made mistakes on the board, his brother was able to assist him and coach him after the game. “After lots of tournaments, I realised the game was helping me in my daily life. I could solve problems faster - and in more creative ways than I could before.” It was while playing a game at Hampton Park Primary School in 2016 that Ashwin learnt something about himself that he had never realised before ... “I was playing terribly. I was losing to people who had just started playing the game. It was painful. I got frustrated and angry with myself. “After the tournament finished, I said I was going to quit chess forever! My mum became troubled since she knew I had a great future in the game and she tried to persuade me to keep playing.

“Luckily, she did! Mum helped me realise that it’s not about winning or loosing the game, it’s about winning or learning the game.” Ashwin is currently playing chess at tournaments at the Australian Junior Chess Championships, the Victorian youth championships, the upcoming state championships and he is playing at the national finals in October, 2018. He also plays at the Melbourne Chess Club and at inter school chess tournaments and even managed to see Arnold Schwarzenegger play chess at the Australian Sports Festival in March. Robocup players fight on In the spirit of the World Cup, 12 'Lodgers' students from Berwick Lodge Primary School took on the state's best young talent in soccer robotics. Not to mention a dancing robot competition and rescue-robot section. The three teams of Years 5 and 6 STEM students excelled in the RoboCup Junior Australia regional comp at Ballarat on 6 June. The Riley Rescue team placed third, the soccer team made the semi-finals and the dance team finished second. Robotics teacher Rob Kelly said the competition helped students understand the importance and inter-connection of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. "The Lodgers really enjoyed the competition - despite the early start and late finish." The Lodgers will take part in state finals in August.

A former worker at a Beaconsfield financial company has pleaded guilty to swindling more than $31,000 from her employer over a two-year period. Alisha West, as the practice manager at Lucana Pty Ltd, had abused her access to company bank cards and a petrol card from 201517, police alleged at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 June. The then-34-year-old, who had a bookkeeping background, had successfully argued against the firm’s “old-style” accounting method in favour of more autonomy. She took advantage of this, stealing funds for personal items such as home renovations, the court heard. Some of the 137 fraudulent transactions included $4000 doors at her home, polo tickets on-sold for profit and excessive fuel use for non-work purposes, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Mark Donoghue told the court. After the company’s audit of the purchases last year, West’s job was terminated. The misappropriated $31,841.92 had not been paid back.
Defence lawyer Esan Pilai argued against a conviction for West, who had no prior criminal history and made full admissions. If convicted, West would face great difficulty getting another job as well as travelling, he said. Reading a submitted psychological report, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that West “still blames the employer ... on some level”. Her offending occurred over an “extensive period of time in a position of trust”. “When you asked for greater autonomy, unfortunately you took advantage of that for financial reasons.” West was convicted and ordered to perform up to 150 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community corrections order. The order included possible mental health treatment, financial counselling and offender-behaviour courses. She was ordered to repay her former employer $31,842.92 within nine months.

IN BRIEF
Jobs on the line By Brendan Rees The jobs of school cleaners across Casey hang in the balance as new State Government reforms set to tear up their contracts next month. The Victorian Government will introduce a new system where eight zones will be created across metropolitan Melbourne and a single cleaning contract will be awarded for all schools in each zone as of July 1. Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) have called for better enforcement of existing workplace rules, and "not a kneejerk response that puts people out of businesses." "This appears to be contradictory to Government procurement principals that allow small and medium business to compete in a competitive space with 'big business,'" said Chief Executive of VCCI Mark Stone AM. Star News contacted a number of schools that will be affected in Casey but either declined to comment or were not available. Shadow Minister for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Neale Burgess said wiping out local school cleaning businesses was "just further proof that Daniel Andrews is nothing more than a bully." "Labor's unfair changes to school cleaning contracts have wiped out over 700 small, mum and dad family businesses with the stroke of a pen. They have installed six major cleaning companies, one of which, ISS Facility Services, was fined $132,000 for underpaying their workers," he said. "This unionised takeover of our school cleaners is a disgrace and the community should be outraged." Minister for Education James Merlino said the Government had a zero tolerance for poor labour practices and multiple investigations found vulnerable staff being underpaid and mistreated in this industry.
Security guard injured A security guard from Hampton Park suffered minor injuries after intervening in an assault at a business premises in South Melbourne this morning, 15 June. The 52-year-old man had secured a man following an assault between a male customer and female employee at the York Street address, police say. The security guard and the man were involved in a scuffle before St Kilda police arrived and arrested a 42-year-old Melbourne man just after 10.30am. The Hampton Park man and a 57-yearold female from East Bentleigh both sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Hampton Park man missing for three weeks
The Andrews Government's changes could mean existing school cleaning contractors may be Picture: BRENDAN REES replaced with bigger businesses. 178746 "Our reform will provide greater assurance that school cleaners receiving their legal wages and entitlements," Mr Merlino said. "There are a range of supports in place to help businesses during his transition phase and all incoming service providers must recruit from the current school cleaning workforce." Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans said attacking small family clean-
ing businesses was a disgrace with the Labor Government stopping at nothing to expand their union base. "These new reforms mean schools, like Cranbourne Park Primary School in my electorate, will be dirtier for longer," she said. "I am an experienced school teacher and I know how difficult and demoralising it can be for staff and students to work in a dirty environment. It is not conducive to learning."
Police have called for help to find a missing Hampton Park man with a health condition. Darren Ashe, 31, had been last seen about three weeks ago. He was reported missing after failing to show up for a medical appointment on 19 May. Darren is described as 170 centimetres with a thin build, long curly brown hair, brown eyes and a tan complexion. He is known to frequent Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Pakenham, as well as often attending Hampton Park shopping centre. Any information to Cranbourne police on 5991 0600.

Take the long road Marketing and advertising are non-negotiable costs of running a successful business. That was the message from marketing expert Damian Morgan who appeared at a series of Star News Group sponsored seminars this week. “Most small businesses are bloody good at what they do, but not good at telling their story,“ Mr Morgan said. He urged small business owners to “educate the market about what you do“ by rolling out a sustained, targeted advertising campaign, with simple messages that grab attention. “If you get people’s attention and get one message across you’ve done well. Don’t try for two or six (messages).“ He said compelling, engaging advertising made for a “better return on investment“ as it “costs the same to run a bad ad as it does to run a good one“. “The first job is to get people to look at what you do. You need to cut through in a very noisy world and get people’s attention and a response.“ Mr Morgan said businesses often made the mistake of trying to be all things to all people.
“Business is about solving problems. Identify your target market and when you are most likely to solve their problems. Is it Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day? “If you don’t put your hand up and promote yourself with advertising you lose the sale. When you have a vacuum it gets filled by the competition.“ Mr Morgan said building a reputation was a long road, one that took patience and investment. “Marketing is not something you turn off and on. It needs to be built into your business model. “If marketing is only something you do when you have to you are doing it wrong. You are telling the market you’re cheap and desperate, not that you’re good.“ He urged businesses to pluck “low hanging fruit“ in their local area first. “Make sure everyone knows who you are with an aggressive, local campaign. “Don’t pay to impress people on the other side of Melbourne until everyone knows you here.“

Heavy debts not fine at all By Cam Lucadou-Wells A staggering $144 million in unpaid warrants was owed in the City of Casey last year, according to the Victorian Sheriff's Office. It's a figure that put Casey on top of the list of the state's local government areas in 201617. The state's most populous LGA also had the most outstanding warrants (381,143). The average value of each debt was $4,723. Across the state, about $2 billion was owed in outstanding warrants in the same period. Victorian Sheriff Warwick Knight urged people to deal with their infringements early to avoid extra penalties and a possible warrant. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
"People who receive a fine can request an internal review, nominate a driver, apply for a payment plan or elect to have the matter heard by the court, and we encourage them to come and speak to us about their options." Since the period, Fines Victoria has introduced payment options such as instalment plans, debt consolidations and time extensions. The State Government introduced a scheme for vulnerable people to undertake volunteer work, courses or mental health treatment to reduce their debt. A scheme was also developed for survivors of family violence.

The event not only helps to raise muchneeded funds for the association but also aims to promote awareness around bowel cancer in the hope that early detection will reduce the number of new cases diagnosed each year. "Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with 90 per cent of cases being curable if caught early enough, it still continues to be one of our biggest killers claiming the lives of 80 Australians each week due to low early detection rates," a St John of God spokesperson said.
By Dr Philip McCahy Surgeons have been in the news recently – league tables, excessive charging, over treatment, pointless heroic surgery and new treatments with uncertain results. As prospective patients it must seem like a minefield out there. When you go to see a specialist either in a public hospital or privately there is no easy way to ensure that the advice you get is current and appropriate. If you are seeing a specialist privately ensure you know what you are getting and how much it is going to cost. Initial consultations can vary widely in length and cost from being bulk-billed up to $250. If you are booked for a private operation you should complete informed financial consent which should detail out-of-pocket expenses. Many procedures can be done for free in the public sector and for important conditions such as cancer the waiting times will be less than four weeks. Most, but not all, private surgeons can get patients onto a public hospital waiting list. Some operations are much safer in a big public hospital than a small private hospital no matter who is doing the operation. Second opinions are well worth considering if in any doubt. Myself and the other urologists at the Melbourne Urology Centre – Tony De Sousa and Shekib Shahbaz - are
"Also called colorectal cancer, bowel cancer affects both men and women equally with eighty per cent of cases exhibiting no known hereditary genetic associations. "With the rate of cases rising sharply and progressively from the age of 50, it is no longer considered an "old person's" disease. Cancer Council Australia recommends that people aged between 50 and 74 be screened for bowel cancer every one to two years." The free non-invasive test can be done at home to screen for blood in the faeces but is only recommended for low-risk people who show no warning signs or have no family history of bowel cancer. If individuals are experiencing symptoms such as a change in bowel habit with diarrhoea, constipation or the feeling of incomplete emptying, thin bowel movements, blood in stools, abdominal pain, bloating or cramping, fatigue, unexplained weightless or anaemia, they are urged to contact their local GP for a referral to a St John of God specialist. For more information, contact St John of God Berwick on 8784 5000 or St John of God Dandenong on 8793 9444.

Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities so it's no wonder most people suffer foot, ankle, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can be done about it? Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia's leading musculoskeletal podiatrists and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. "The most common concerns include knee pain, injuries and arthritis, heel, shin and forefoot pain ankle and achilles concerns," Dr Dowie said. The past few months have seen many visitors finding what staff and regulars already know - the area has so much to offer. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, visiting the local wineries or fresh fruit farms, cycling the rail trail or taking a bike ride to Metung for coffee. The bush is beautiful and there are many roads to explore, and the possibility of finding ruins of old quarries, mills or machinery left behind from days gone by is always there. The village of Swan Reach has a wellstocked general store with post office and newsagency, a hotel providing meals and cold beer, and a service station for fuel, mechanical repairs and fishing gear.
Unwind with a holiday at Tambo River Tourist Park. Bait, boat repairs and take away food are all available in the neighbourhood. The weather in autumn is usually very mild. Tambo River staff members would love to welcome new visitors to their beautiful part of the world. For booking or further information phone 5156 4314 or visit www.tamborivertouristpark. com, or find Tambo River Tourist Park on Facebook and start planning the next holiday now.

and fishing is always a popular pastime. There are plenty of places to enjoy fishing from the bank so a boat is not necessary to hook the best catches. The past year has seen a great increase in the number of overnight stays in caravans and campers. Tambo River offers powered and unpowered sites. Waste disposal is available at all sites and the usual laundry, camp kitchen and barbecue facilities are on hand. As more and more travellers are enjoying extended trips with their ‘best friends’ Tambo River is pleased to welcome pets to the park.
There's plenty happening across the City of Casey these school holidays. From Monday 2 July to Friday 13 July, the City of Casey's Teenage School Holiday program will offer teenagers aged 10 to 17 years fun, age-appropriate activities at reasonable prices. Transportation to and from the program is available at designated pick up and drop off points throughout Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Endeavour Hills and Doveton. For more information visit the City of Casey website. Bunjil Place is bound to be a hub of activity with the Trash Puppets Workshop for kids taking place on Monday 2 July from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Kids are invited to join the talented team from Trash Puppets in a hands-on creative workshop to learn how to make their own take-home puppet. Bookings are essential. Then, on Wednesday 4 July, kids are invited to take part in the free 'Backyard Painting' activity at Bunjil Place. The cubby house there
needs some decorative paintings to hang on the walls. Kids are encouraged to be inspired by the cubby and its backyard and create a painting which they can either hang in the cubby or take home and keep. On Monday 9 July, the Selandra Community Hub invites five to nine-year-olds to learn the ancient secrets of the Jedi at their Star Wars Jedi Academy. Students will master skills such as agility, focus and lightsabre techniques and the session will be topped off with a graduation certificate for each child. Bookings are required. On Friday 13, the Selandra Community Hub will again open its doors for their Super Science activities. For ages nine to 12 years, the programs are all about hands-on mixing, testing and experimenting! Join them as they make slime, create giant bubbles, and launch fizz poppers. For more information about these events plus many more, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/ Home.

But in 2000 when Melanie Gleeson quit her full-time job to launch Endota Spa, the average Australian didn’t have any concept of the kind of business that she was wanting to build. A beauty business focused on inner health and beauty? Was that even possible? Arrival defies odds By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren mother who was told by doctors to abort her pregnancy has given birth to a healthy baby boy. Racheal Chadwick says she is glad she went with “her instincts“ not to terminate despite doctors repeated claims there was “something wrong” with her baby. “With no evidence to support what the doctors were saying, there wasn’t really any other choice for me than to keep my baby and I am so glad that I did,” she said. The 40-year-old gave birth to a nine pound one baby boy named Logan on 14 March at Monash Clayton Hospital. “They took one look at him and decided that no testing needed to be done, and that he was a normal baby,” she said. However, doctors told Ms Chadwick her baby had a one in three chance of having Down syndrome, a one in 14 chance of having trisomy 13, and a one in 200 chance of having trisomy 18, following a 12 week pregnancy scan. In a further ultra sound, she was told her baby’s nuchal fold was 9mm. “The normal size is between 2.5mm and 3.5 mm,” Ms Chadwick said. “I was given three options...one; to continue this pregnancy and see what happens, two; terminate now or three, have a CVS (chorionic villus sampling) test done,” she said. “I discussed with my partner and we decided to have the testing done.” Although the results came back normal doctors told her there was still “something wrong“ with her baby after a 30 week ultrasound: “This time they told me his hands were deformed because he wouldn’t open them.“ But the mother of six refused to listen to doctors and went ahead with her pregnancy. “Doctors are not always right. If I had of listened to them, I would have terminated a normal healthy baby for no other reason than the doctors not knowing what or if anything was

Berwick’s hoops success By Hayley Wildes The Berwick College Basketball Academy is making a name for itself as it racks up impressive wins in tournaments across the state. Earlier this month, the senior girls claimed the 2018 Victorian College Championship (VCC). This comes off the back of a hugely successful 3x3 state championships in May, which saw the under-19 girls and under-17 boys crowned state champions. Chris Pentland, the director of the Berwick College Basketball Academy, talked about the program and the improvement he sees in those that participate. "We've got about 250 kids involved in the basketball academy now, from years 7-12 and we certainly see improvement across the board," he said. "We have a huge variation in ability and you probably see the greatest growth from the kids that are sort of picking the game up at a base level." "We've got some great coaches in the program with a lot of experience in high-level play themselves." The Senior Girls team, who took all before them at the VCC, went through the pool stage undefeated - beating Box Hill (12-point win) and Mater Christi (4-point win) - before facing Box Hill again in the semi final and claiming another win, this time by seven points. In a highly competitive field and with shorter game lengths - games consist of 2 x 12 minute halves - there was little room for error and the girls from Berwick College took on Rowville Sport Academy in a back and forth final. "It was pretty tight all the way through. We got a jump on them early and then they got a bit of lead, before we came back late and ended up winning," Pentland said. "They were super excited to get the win. They're a great bunch of girls and it was nice

for them because they've been together in the program for quite a while." The team, led by rising star Jaz Shelley who helped Australia claim an incredible gold medal at the under-17 World Championships in 2016 - secured the win over Rowville, 28-22.
Along with Shelley, Tiarni Fallon, Vanessa Fantin, Jess McConchie, Rebecca Peacock and Tamsyn Pentland made up the victorious sixplayer team. For Fantin, McConchie, Pentland and Shelley, it was their second state championship in
as many months after claiming the 3x3 state championship in May. Berwick College is building a basketball program that is driving improvement in all students and as recent results suggest, they can match it with any school in the state.

Demons are well placed for a VFL flag tilt By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons return to action this weekend, taking on the winless Coburg Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday from 4pm. After a bye in round 11, the Demons will be looking to solidify their second position on the ladder and push their winning streak out to six games. The last time these two teams met - in Round 1 - the Demons scored a massive 107-point win, 28.12 (180) to 11.7 (73). Casey has been ruthless over their five game winning streak. But what makes their streak even more impressive is who they have beaten and how they've gone about their business. Wins against Box Hill, Port Melbourne, Williamstown and Collingwood - all current top eight teams - showcases the tough schedule Casey has 42 STAR NEWS

been faced with and highlights that they have been able to defeat strong teams consistently. There is no doubt that the strength of Casey's AFL affiliate; Melbourne, has played a key role in the team's success. With so much depth and plenty of wins for Melbourne, there are high quality AFL-listed players consistently pulling on the Casey jumper. The likes of Jeff Garlett (five games), Jayden Hunt (six), Tom Bugg (seven), Cam Pedersen (seven), Billy Stretch (seven) and Jay KennedyHarris (nine) have all been unable to break into Melbourne's team and are playing for their AFL lives in the VFL. That hunger is driving those players and they are performing week in, week out for Casey. To their credit, they are not playing onedimensional, selfish football either - they are
playing the Casey brand of football; tough, pressure-filled and defence driven. While Stretch, Bugg and Hunt have had standout games, Pedersen's season has been incredibly consistent and at times, matchwinning. In seven games, he has booted 20 goals as a utility - with his composure and sublime foot skills constantly relied upon. With a plethora of Melbourne-listed players making waves for Casey, the work of VFL-listed players such as Jay Lockhart, Corey Wagner and James Munro can't be underestimated. They continue to do a heap of heavy lifting for the team and will be vital cogs in the second half of the season. As we look to the second half of the season, Casey is well-placed to make some noise at the business end of the year.
FOOTBALL FEDERATION VICTORIA SOCCER REVIEW - ROUND 11 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST A blistering start for the Eltham Redbacks was too much for the Casey Comets to handle, going down 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Comets couldn't handle the attacking masterclass of Gianni Falzon - who scored a first half brace - to take a 3-0 lead into half time. Needing a miracle to come back and win, the Comets battled valiantly and scored two second half goals to put some respectability on the final scoreboard, with the home side doing too much damage in the end. The loss has the Comets third last on the State 1 League South East table, ahead of Morwell Pegasus and South Springvale, who occupy the bottom two positions. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City is circling around the top two after knocking off North Caulfield 0-3 at Caulfield Park on Sunday afternoon. Courtesy of a brace to Orlando Mejias - who now has seven goals for the season - City went into half time 0-2 up, and found the back of the net only a minute into the second half to put the game to bed. The win - which is City's seventh in 11 games - has them narrowly in third spot - only two points from the top of the table. Ladder leaders Doveton, meanwhile, suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Knox City at Egan Lee Reserve on Saturday night, with the Doves now somewhat vulnerable at the top of the table. Knox found the only goal of the first half, and couldn't contain the home side after a red card to Anthony Goweid, conceding another two goals in the second half. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Lyndale United powered away in a dominant second half to set up a 3-1 victory over Pakenham United on Saturday afternoon. The home side scored all of its three goals in the final half, with Pakenham's Karl Cochrane not helping proceedings with a red card. At Prospect Hill Reserve, Casey Panthers stood no chance against Chelsea FC 1-5, with four of the goals coming in the first half. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

The Wickers make a call By Nick Creely Berwick is the latest club to officially vote towards a move into the proposed 'AFL Greater East', after seriously considering moving to the powerful Eastern Football League. The reigning SEFNL premiers officially endorsed the move at a committee meeting at the club on Tuesday 12 June. Two weeks ago, an advisory committee made up of around 14 members of the club voted unanimously towards a move to AFL Yarra Ranges. Wickers president Glenn Gambetta told the News it's a major relief to have it all over with. "It took a lot of our attention, so it's a real relief for us as a club," he said. "We can now finally get on with the future, and the overall running of our club." While Gambetta admits the Eastern option was always something they considered after meeting with league officials on a number of occasions, ultimately a number of factors came into play. "The netball played a big part of it for us - if we go to Eastern, we lose that, and it's just the safest option," he said. "The competition (AFL Greater East) will be just as competitive as an Eastern Division 2, so it's less risk if we go. "And we always wanted to keep that country football feel, and to make sure we keep our local rivalries alive." While Gambetta was pleased with what AFL Yarra Ranges had to offer, he opted to present all the information to the club's members rather than have league officials come out to the club. He explained that it was important for the club to look objectively in what was a massive decision for the future. "I wanted to ensure it was a neutral discussion, and to state all the facts about both leagues objectively, rather than just a sales

The Dandenong Stingrays extracted some revenge on the Oakleigh Chargers at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Rays, whose solitary loss for the season was dealt by the Chargers in Round 5, continued on their merry way to move to 8-1 on the season, strengthening their position at the top of the TAC Cup ladder. With an array of their guns missing due to Vic Country commitments, the team’s depth shone through - as it has done all season long. Captain Campbell Hustwaite got things underway with the first major of the day and Dandenong jumped out to a 28-12 lead at quarter-time through slick ball movement and couple of late goals in the quarter. The second quarter was when the Rays made their move. Relentless attack and pressure around the ball saw Dandenong force turnovers and slam on five foals to one for the term. The barrage of forward 50 entries proved too much as the Rays scored three goals in five minutes after the Chargers put through the first major of the quarter. The likes of Matthew Cottrell, Reid Nanscawen and William Hamill were really starting to take over the match and Oakleigh had no answers for them. A 42-point half-time lead was added to in the third term as the Rays made the most of their chances. William Geurts scored two goals for the quarter and Angus Paterson added one too. Campbell Hustwaite and Hayden Young were sublime and continuing to drive the ball forward. Through the team’s hard work, the Rays held a massive 81-27 lead at the final break. After accurate kicking for the first three quarters, the Rays goalkicking abandoned them in the final term as their dominance in general play only yielded them 1.8 (14), saving the Chargers from what could have been a very ugly final scoreboard. Despite their inaccuracy in the final quarter, the damage had well and truly been done and the Stingrays ran out 55-point winners,
13.17 (95) to 6.4 (40). Dandenong’s ability to choose the right option in attacking forays, along with their willingness to take the game on, was crucial as Oakleigh were chasing their tails all day. With so much top end talent missing, the Rays showed why they are the team to beat with a squad that plays for one another and doesn’t rely on any one player to do more than necessary. Dandenong’s 11 individual goalkickers for their 13 goals is a testament to this. Matthew Cottrell was tremendous for Dandenong and he is putting together a consistent season, proving his worth at TAC Cup level. Meanwhile, Reid Nanscawen, Lachlan Stenning and William Hamill were impressive and vital when the game was there to be won. Dandenong will face Greater Western Victoria next, kicking off from 1pm at Shepley Oval on Saturday 23 June.

Cranbourne's Anthony Vella tries to handle the ball in slippery conditions against Beaconsfield on Saturday. 181946
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Cranny finds the answers By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 8 It was a game as fierce as the almost arctic conditions. And in the end, it was Cranbourne who were just cleaner on the outside to upstage a plucky Beaconsfield side who never wavered in intensity, 10.6 (66) to 6.14 (50). Many eyes were firmly focused on 987-goal champion Marc Holt, with recruit Mitchell Wallace given the dangerous task of quelling the perennial goal machine. The Beaconsfield midfield were getting terrific first use by Scott Meyer, but fiddled around with the football by hand on the outside to eventually gift the opening goal of the match to Shaun Marusic, who instantly exerted an influence off half-back. As pressure increased, star midfielder and Casey Demon jet Jimmy Munro was all class, producing plenty of searing runs to get the ball moving the right way. With spearhead Nathan Langley up and about, the visitors suddenly surged out late in the first quarter, taking in a 10-point lead after slamming on three unanswered goals. But the home side found their mojo eventually after Leigh McQuillen's side squandered some chances on the other end, and a late flurry courtesy of superb work down the field by Marusic, Glenn Osborne, Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo gave dangerous forwards such as Nathan Gardiner, Tommy Marks and Nick Russo plenty of chances. At half time, the home side shivered their way to the rooms with a 16-point advantage, with light drizzle giving them a major advantage. Champion ruckman Michael Boland was a major casualty early in the third quarter, going down clutching his knee after getting his leg trapped underneath a teammate in a marking contest. 44 STAR NEWS

Despite holding firm in a tense, fierce final half that was perhaps reflected by the home side's accuracy (3.3 to 2.9), O'Brien was proud of his side to adapt in a game that didn't quite going for them. "I don't think we ever really got our game going, and credit to Beaconsfield for that - it was quite a contested game, so yeah, we had little patches where we opened them up and hit the scoreboard, and it was telling in the end," he said. That ability to hit the scoreboard when it mattered was reflected in the home side's lacklustre third quarter, in which youngster Nick Russo kept Beaconsfield at bay with a gritty set shot from a tough angle to stretch the margin to 15-points deep in the quarter. In a low scoring affair, it was arguably the most important moment of the match. But O'Brien praised his midfield for battling through and exerting maximum pressure, and his defensive unit for its resolute effort in a tense final term. "The midfield was even, if anything they might have won it in the end - once Boland went off injured, we battled hard, and probably weight of numbers took its toll in the second half," he said. "Scotty (Meyer) probably got on top, and they surged the ball forward a bit. "(And) our backlines a real strength of ours, we have a lot of trust in our guys down there but they need support, and a lot of that comes down to the pressure being applied down the field. "If you don't have that pressure, they will be exposed, and that's an area we've been really good at it." In what turned into a hard fought loss, Jake Bowd, Munro, Meyer and Riley Welsh were outstanding for the visitors, while Nathan Langley and Taylor Joyce battled valiantly to kick five of the six goals against a sturdy defence. For Cranbourne, Marusic relished the conditions, while the likes of Glenn Osborne, the
versatile Troy Tharle and Nathan Gardiner all impacted the game. The conditions - which were hard for players to adjust to - proved crucial in a low scoring contest, with the home side able to overcome some fierce wind. Berwick, meanwhile, emerged from an almighty scrap with Officer to take the four points at Edwin Flack Reserve, 8.15 (63) to 2.6 (18). After two consecutive losses - which is foreign territory for the reigning premiers - some sort of response was certainly necessary for Stewart Kemperman's side. The rain pelted down, and the Wickers were simply more physical at the contest, surging out to a 25-point quarter time lead, holding the Kangaroos goalless. On a day where clean hands where a must, Madi Andrews had a superb opening term, combining nicely with a dangerous Bailey Asher early in the contest. The Kangaroos were unable to hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way until the third term when the game was effectively over, with the Wickers' incredible team defence finally being undone by a fifty metre penalty duly slotted by Harry Dean in the goal square. Doug Koop's side showed a bit of steel to register another goal by three quarter time, but were held scoreless in the final term as the home side surged home to boot a further three majors. Finally back on the winners list, the Wickers were well served by Asher (two goals) and Brody Connelly (two), while Madi Andrews and Travis Tuck certainly relished the conditions at hand. "Earlier in the year, we played Narre Warren in similar conditions, we didn't adjust quickly, and it was good to take some learnings from that into the weekend," Wickers coach Stewart Kemperman said. Kemperman said it was important that his side could bounce back from two fadeout loss-
es in recent weeks. "Winning habits are good habits, and it's important to get back into that winning circle," he said. "The losses have been interesting, we've had strong efforts in both games - in the Cranbourne game, we had a bad lapse, and against Narre our effort was tremendous. "It was more the polish - we know our best footy is ahead of us, so we're going to continue to work and hopefully it'll all just come together." Down at Kalora Park, the undefeated Narre Warren not only brushed aside the weather, but kicked another 23 goals, in a testament to their belief. Pakenham were nothing but gallant in their 23.15 (153) to 8.8 (56) loss, but were ultimately outclassed by a side at the top of their game. Ash Green's side were defensively solid as they have all season in the first term, conceding just the three goals while piling on two themselves to be holding an eight-point deficit at quarter time. But a dominant second term saw the home side surge away to a 47-point lead, with Brad Scalzo, Michael Collins, Mitch Cox and Josh Tonna was all class as they kicked the ball forward into the hungry arms of Nick and Stew Scanlon, as well as Aaron Wilson, who warmed into the game with a towering presence. The Lions - to their credit - managed to stem the bleeding briefly with a terrific 30-minutes in the third term, winning the quarter and showcasing some impressive efforts in the contest. The Magpies' overriding control over the contest continued on with a dominant final term, slamming through 10.5 to just 0.2, flexing their muscles when it mattered. In the other match over the weekend, Tooradin-Dalmore were far too strong in a 7.9 (51) to 16.11 (107) win over Doveton at AJ Robinson Oval. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Primed Panthers pounce on Demons By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 9 Rowville was overrun by South Croydon in the second half on Saturday, falling 8.5 (53) to 12.17 (89).Leading by one-point at half-time, the Hawks only managed three goals in the second half, while the Bulldogs put through eight majors. Damian Garner was best for the Hawks, while Aiden Quigley, Ziggie Alwan and Riley D'Arcy booted two goals each. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION TWO - ROUND 10 Devon Meadows bounced back from last week with a brilliant final quarter comeback against Rye at Glover on Saturday, 13.5 (83) to 10.10 (70). The Panthers trailed by 22 points at three quarter time and looked to be fading away to another loss, but slammed on six unanswered goals to run away with the four points. Michael Theodoridis was the star with six majors next to his name, while the likes of Troy Aust, Allan Murray and Cal O'Hare were solid all day. Down at Pearcedale, the Panthers were thumped by Hastings, 10.4 (64) to 19.14 (128). SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3 - ROUND 8 Endeavour Hills - despite inaccurate goal kicking - took care of Heatherton, 6.15 (51) to 5.2 (32). Nick Gay and Ben Moriarty were involved in everything for the Falcons and Jarrod Marolla kicked three majors. For Heatherton, Ben Clark-Henry and Mehdi Daoud were impressive. Springvale Districts was dominant from start to finish to claim a massive win over South Yarra, 6.7 (43) to 16.29 (115). Stefan Feehan (six goals) was irresistible up forward for Springvale Districts and David Monaghan and George Angelopoulos were important all day. Meanwhile, Hampton Park piled on 15 goals to one in the second half to demolish Hallam, 2.4 (16) to 20.11 (131). Jackson Fry was the star of the day as he booted nine majors in a dominant display. Kane Bloxsidge and Shannon Henwood were also impressive for the Redbacks. Rory

Muhammad Haque celebrates an early goal for Hallam, but it was short lived as Hampton Park Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS dominated. 181945 McIvor and Dion Cavallo were valiant all day for the Hawks. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 9 Dandenong finally broke through for their maiden win of the season. Taking on Moorabbin at Greaves Reserve, the Redlegs claimed a hard-fought and welldeserved 17.4 (106) to 14.11 (95) win. Kiat Tut and Michael Lawrence were crucial in getting the Redlegs home. Lyndale was far too strong for Sandown, claiming a 13.6 (84) to 6.9 (45) win. The Cobras were dominated in the second half, but James
Tate and Nicholas Morrish were notable for Sandown. Carrum Patterson Lakes was unable to match Lyndhurst after quarter-time as they went down, 7.11 (53) to 3.3 (21). Carrum Patterson Lakes failed to score a goal after quarter-time and only mustered one-point in the second half. Ben Hiam was best afield, while Aaron Cocker and Hamish Browning (three goals) were dominant for the Lightning. Shane Dunn and Steven Cormack were relentless for Carrum Patterson Lakes, despite the loss.
Cavaliers catch fire, claim a key win By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers are building nicely as Big V basketball nears the business end of the regular season. The State Championship Men scored a crucial win on the road against Knox on Sunday. A strong first half set up the win as Casey claimed an 80-90 victory. Matt Donlan (26 points) and Brent Hobba (20 points) combined for nine triples as the Cavs shot the lights out, denying the Raiders any chances of a comeback. Raheem Lemons (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Ben Louis (12 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds) were also brilliant in a confidence-building win. The Cavs currently sit seventh on the ladder, with an 8-6 record. The Division 1 Women continued their incredible form and are riding a seven-game winning streak after taking care of Camberwell, 61-50, at home on Sunday. Casey won every quarter and were led by the usual suspects of Tanarly Hood (23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Jamie-Lee Jeffs (13 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists) and Tarryn Wilkin (12 rebounds, 9 points). The Cavs sit second on the ladder with a 13-2 record. The Youth League 1 Men took it right up to the undefeated Sunbury Jets, but ultimately fell, 70-73. Casey didn't take a backwards step as Oyberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
iti Amum (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Jordan Gooiker (19 points) led the scoring, but it wasn't enough as Sunbury got solid contributions across the board. Heading up to Bendigo a day later, they were unable to even the ledger for the weekend, dropping to their sixth straight defeat. The Braves were simply dominant and the Cavs' offence stalled, falling 88-63. Corey Roos (14 points) and Alex Bazzucchini (10 rebounds, 8 points) were lone hands for the Cavs. Casey sit ninth on the ladder, slumping to 5-10 for the season. The Youth League 2 Women remain undefeated after making light work of Frankston at home on Saturday night. Rebecca Peacock (19 points, 8 rebounds), Rebecca Jones (17 points, 4 steals) were standouts in the 70-59 win. With an imposing 12-0 record, the Cavs sit three games clear on top. This weekend sees a massive State Championship Men and Division 1 Women doubleheader tip off from 6pm at Casey Stadium on Saturday. Both teams then hit the road on Sunday, with the men taking on Eltham and the women facing Western Port. The Youth League 2 Women face Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday evening on the road, while the Youth League 1 Men travel to Warrandyte on Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday afternoon to face Coburg.

Oneata Schwalger had one goal in mind. And anyone that has ever seen her step on a rugby field knows that she won't take a backwards step when she has her sights set on achieving something. Last week, Oneata's dream of signing with a team for the inaugural National Rugby League Women's Premiership competition was realised. Now officially a member of the St George Illawarra Dragons, Oneata - who plays locally for South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club is still coming to terms with the achievement. "That was the goal. I'm really stoked and still sort of crying every day, it comes in waves," she said. "Until I'm up there with the girls, I don't think it will truly sink in." Oneata has played rugby union at the highest level, both nationally and internationally, and making the switch to rugby league has clearly paid dividends. She had been on the radar of scouts for some time, but her play at the Women's National Rugby League Championships on the Gold Coast last month solidified her as a sure thing to be signed. The competition, which will see the Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Sydney Roosters and St George field teams, kicks off in early September with all games to be played as curtain-raisers to NRL finals games. All teams will play each other once, before the top two teams face off in a grand final played before the NRL Grand Final in Sydney on 30 September. "I think on that day, it's going to blow up for women's rugby league in Australia, it really will. This is just the start and it's really exciting," Oneata said. The 32-year-old, mother of two will be relocating to Wollongong for eight weeks to ensure she can attend all trainings and get the most out of herself. Whilst she admits it will be hard to leave her kids, she is looking forward to the experience. "I'll be up there for the eight weeks. I went to Wollongong for the Jillaroos camp last year and it was stunning, so I'm not going to be complaining. Outside of work and training, I'll just be on the beach," she said with a laugh. Another aspect that makes the achievement even more incredible is the fact that Oneata is the only Victorian to be signed by any team. With her ruthless style of play and nonstop engine that powers her through countless packs, there is no doubt that Oneata Schwalger will do Victoria and the South East proud every time she steps on the field.
