WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ...
A MOO-VING EXPERIENCE BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was a different classroom for almost 20 Year 9-12 students from Noosa District State High School who brought about 11 of the school's cattle to the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show over the weekend. Led by agricultural teacher Kerryn Foley the group trucked four steers, one senior cow and six heifers into the show Friday morning and prepared to camp in the showgrounds overnight to keep an eye on their animals.Student Jess Lowe said it was a
great learning experience and good fun. "I love interacting with the animals and you meet a lot of people," she said. "You learn a lot about the animals, where the industry is heading and about communicating and working with a team of people." Myles Carmody occasionally works with the cattle on his uncle's farm at Eumundi, likes being with the cattle and the experience the show brings but hasn't yet decided whether farming was where his
future would lie. Liam Sylvester was keeping a tight rein on young steer Neon and was pleased with his performance at his first show. "We needed to put in some effort and he's come a long way," he said. The team had an extra camper join the the group after a baby goat was donated to the school. Ms Foley said the week old kid named Domino was a twin that the mother had rejected. Despite needing two-hourly feeds Domino was a much welcome guest. ●

COUNCIL CALLS TIME ON SURF CLUB DIVISION BY MARGARET MACCOLL The possibility of moving the Peregian Beach surf club closer to the ocean is “off the table”. It is “not an option” Noosa councillors made clear at their general committee on Monday. Councillor Brian Stockwell said an unnecessary division had been created in the community over the issue. He said the continuation of any activity to push a concept to move the club closer to the ocean “should stop”. Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club (NHSLSC) took over responsibility of Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club (PBSLSC) in 2014 when the club faced financial troubles. Since then it has cleared PBSLSC’s debts, maintained lifesaving patrols from September to May, conducted a nipper program and refurbished the building. A council report states NHSLSC recently stated a preference to relocate the clubhouse to the skate park toward the frontal dune. Council officers have written to the club providing advice on the processes and constraints associated with relocation and redevelopment. Key issues include coastal erosion, tenure, native title and development assessment considerations, which led staff to advise that redevelopment options should focus on the existing site. Staff advised NHSLSC council’s Coastal Hazard mapping reaffirmed any move toward the ocean would increase risks from coastal erosion and was unlikely to be supported. Mayor Tony Wellington said the community had called on council to make a “definitive decision” on the surf club but they couldn’t make a decision without a proposal application. Cr Frank Wilkie said he hoped all involved in the community would move toward coming up with a village scale clubhouse on site. “If everyone pooled their resources something really special can be achieved down there and it would be powerfully healing for the community,” he said. ● 201721004-LB21-17

WOMEN’S WORK BY MARGARET MACCOLL
Y
ou might expect the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) president to hail from country Queensland but Joy Coulson of Cooroy came to Australia from South Africa. The community-minded Joy has been involved with the scout movement for more than 50 years. It was how she met her husband of almost 50 years, Bob, and what took her to a property in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, to live. But with increasing civil unrest, landmines littering the landscape and fearing for their safety Joy and Bob and their two young sons decided it was too
dangerous to remain. They moved to South Africa and after four years progressing through the migration process, found a new home in Australia. Having also been involved with Associated Country Women of the World in Africa, an international organisation for rural and urban women with which the CWA is affiliated, when the family arrived in the country Joy sought out the association where she knew she would meet people and form friendships. Unfortunately her work prevented her from attending the branches daytime meetings, a practise that is now seeing changes. But once she retired, and inspired by the work they do assisting people with charitable work, she joined. She
threw herself into the organisation at a local and regional level and two years ago was appointed state president. “It’s been good for me. I made friends and got to know people,” she said. “There are wonderful women in the association.” Founded in 1922, the QCWA has been focussed ever since on bringing women together for different reasons, whether it is about meeting new people, making new friends, learning new skills or getting involved in the community. They achieve their goals by advocating and providing opportunities for women centred around education, health and community throughout every phase of a their lives. No one knows more about Queensland’s
largest and most widespread women’s organisation with three regions, 20 divisions, more than 240 branches and just under 4000 members than Joy who described her role as a challenge that was very rewarding. “I’m so lucky I have a good staff,” she said. “I’m a team person. I think it’s my scouting background. That’s how I’ve always worked. “Sometimes as president I have to make final decisions. I like to get others opinions.” QCWA works to help women in a variety of situations. Through its rural crisis fund it has been supporting people in the outback as they struggle though weather conditions including drought and flood.

CWA gathering communicating. It’s so important for them. We can’t understand it here on the coast. We’re so safe. They have hardship. “ Providing financial assistance to help send children to school and travel allowances to enable women and children to access medical care are also items on their agenda. Having gained an enviable reputation for making quality cakes and craft over many years the association continues to draw on its traditional skills and holding cake and craft stalls when it comes to raising funds for its many projects. “They’re very popular,” Joy said. “We sell a lot of craft. There’s also Bunnings sausage sizzles and bingo nights. QCWA also owns a number of properties which it rents out including Ruth Fairfax house in Brisbane and holiday units on the Sunshine Coast and Bunya Mountains providing both an income stream and affordable holiday accommodation. Once a year the branches meet during
a state convention. This year it will be in Brisbane in October at the Convention Centre when delegates from more than 200 branches will gather. There will be displays of craft, art, cooking, photography and winners will be judged at the state level. The conference will discuss current projects. One of those will be an international fundraising project aimed at securing water tanks for communities in South Pacific Islands whose water supply has been tainted by salt water. “It’s a big project,” Joy said. “They’re replacing them with plastic tanks. It’s important for them to have water to drink.” All state associations meet once a year at a national conference. This year Joy will represent Queensland at the conference in August in Canberra. Future for QCWA The organisation celebrated its 95th anniversary last year and as it heads toward its 100th year it has a goal to double membership and already new initiatives are driving interest.
Recently three new branches have opened at the Gold Coast and Toowoomba and holding meetings in the evenings are gaining a growing following from younger women who work. Joy would also like to see the association take greater steps to bridge cultural gaps, to enrich the association through their diversity and to reach out to women from other countries who have left their network of friends behind and were trying to network with multicultural communities to achieve this end. “When you come from another country there are no school reunions,” she said. This is an issue close to Joy’s heart. Having come to Australia with two boys aged six and eight years, only a crate full of items and $800 in their pockets they are appreciative of the second chance at life. “We have a roof over our heads,” she said. “We manage on a pension. We’re grateful. We’re so lucky we’re in Australia. We count our blessings.” ●

“We support them with water, car registration, electricity, food vouchers. We want to keep the shops open. If there are shops in small towns we can set up credit so they can buy their food.” Through an initiative called Country Kitchens QCWA is promoting healthy living. Operating through CWA halls the venture, run by a team of four ladies, is teaching hands on cooking. “Some young women don’t know how to prepare meals from the start,” Joy said. “These programs have been excellent and have been running for three years.” “With Country Kitchens we’ve brought a whole new look to the things we do. When people hear CWA they think scones. We do make good scones but we do a lot of other things.” Joy said in some rural towns the QCWA may be one of the few places women can go for support. “In some places there may be only 10 women or a half dozen. It’s important these branches stay open. They are meeting and

Noosa council's funding requirements for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation don't go far enough to ensuring the transparency the community is calling for, according to Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson. Under a proposed three-year funding deed future Council funding will be dependent on NBRF requirements to provide Council details of required changes it makes to its governance, transparency around its operations, community reports and fundraising effectiveness. And further project funding will be determined by Council based on the suitability of proposed projects. Cr Jackson said she was concerned the conditions were framed broadly and were open to interpretation. "The conditions need to be specific and align with UNESCO's expectations, including opening up NBRF membership and voting rights to the community, not allowing the provision of grant funding to organisations of which NBRF directors are officeholders, and aligning its objectives to UNESCO's aims for the Man and the Biosphere Program," she said. "The NBRF Funding Deed is both a contract with Council and with the
community, because it is ratepayers' money that supports the NBRF." Mayor Tony Wellington said tightening the conditions made by Council may jeopardise the ability of NBRF to operate within its framework as a charitable trust under its Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Cr Wellington said Noosa Council didn't control NBRF which operates as a company not a community organisation. He said NBRF had to date funded successful projects and met its obligations to Council apart from some delays with KPIs. Ratepayers funds will be protected through a supervisory role by Council as Council gets the final say on where funding will be provided and reporting by NBRF through Council meetings will continue, he said. Cr Frank Wilkie said a high degree of accountability was already being asked of the organisation. Councillors will decide on the NBRF funding deed at its Ordinary Meeting to be held at Kin Kin today. â—?

REFUGEE AWAITS KEY LIFE DECISION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Sri Lankan refugee Siva Kumar came to Noosa to enjoy a short homestay with a family in 2013. When the family offered him an extended stay, he accepted, remaining with them for about a year before forging his own future, gaining employment and, seven months ago, taking over a restaurant, Raj Indian Restaurant, in Noosaville. Despite his five-year settlement in the area he remains on a temporary visa and his future in Australia will depend on a court decision in August. While he awaits his fate this week, during Refugee Week, he offered his restaurant to Buddies Refugee Support Group to host a fundraising dinner on Wednesday to help other refugees. Siva’s journey to Australia was not an easy one, nor one he chose lightly. After his brother was murdered he said he became a target of a group of people bent on causing him harm during a time of civil unrest in the country. Siva worked as a chef in Columbo. He moved to another city to avoid the violence and worked as a butcher. “They tried to kill me,” he said. “I ended up in hospital.” His father and his family told him he should leave in order to survive. His journey to Australia from the capital of Columbo was not as he envisaged, only discovering before boarding that his 14-day boat ride to freedom was aboard a very small, overcrowded fishing vessel.
Siva Kumar “There were 45-50 people in a fishing boat,” he said. The sea was rough with waves crashing over the boat and there was little food or water though he admitted he was too seasick to eat much of the time. “It was so terrifying,” he said. “I thought we were not going to make it. Every day I
prayed to God.” The boat made land on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, 2750km northwest of Perth. From there he was placed in detention on Christmas Island, Perth, Cairns and Brisbane. Buddies Refugee support group hosted
the fundraising dinner at Siva’s restaurant on Wednesday to celebrate Refugee Week and raise money to assist refugees. Guest speakers discussed homestay programs in which Australian families host refugees in their homes. For more information visit www.refugeebuddies.org/events ●

OUR WORLD COMPETITOR
CHIPPING AWAY AT TITLES Father and son woodchoppers Phil and Dean Campbell were centre stage at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show at Nambour on the weekend with Tasmanians the team to beat. The Tasmanians first came to the Nambour show in 1991 and have been winning more than their fair share of prizes ever since. Phil said the regional event attracted some of the best axe cutters in the world and about half the Australian team were present. The Cooroy builder and captain of the Australian side has been competing for more than four decades and won numerous titles including the world title and Australian title. His son Dean, 32, who is also on the Australian side has been involved in the sport since he was about threeyears-old and regularly teams up with his father for the double hand cross cut saw division. Over the weekend Dean won second place in the state sawing competition. The family-oriented sport brings together a number of sibling and husband and wife teams and the handicap system that staggers time starts helps give all competitors a chance to be in the race.Phil said the Tasmanians again won the event two to one providing tough competition."They've always been a good side," Phil said. ●
BY MARGARET MACCOLL After competing last year in Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Germany and finally the World Cup finals in Paris Cooroy showjumper Billy Raymont was last weekend back at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show at Nambour. "It's nice to get back," he said. "And these shows on the Sunshine Coast are good shows." Billy found the major difference between competing here and overseas was the size of the competitions and the venues. "Here you might get 20-25. There were 100 in the Grand Prix (in Paris)," he said. "It's on a massive scale." Billy was pleased his first international tour went well, praising his horse for his coping abilities. "He flew well to Hong Kong and didn't miss a beat," he said. "Sometimes they get a bit flat." He attributed his quick flight recovery partly to his attitude and partly to breaking the journey after 11 hours in Hong Kong before the 13-hour journey on to Europe. Billy will travel to Belgium to compete next month then hopes in August to gain selection on the Australian side competing in the FEI World Equestrian Games in the US in September. ●

PROTECTORS AND PROVIDERS TOO BY MARGARET MACCOLL Llamas make not only wonderful pets and providers of fine wool they are effective guard animals capable of warding off wild dogs. Syla Barns has kept llamas for about 25 years and said their placid natures made them easy to train, their soft padded feet meant they tred lightly on the ground without damaging it, an adult would provide about 3-4kg wool when shorn and their poo was good fertiliser for the garden. In addition as a pack animal they made great picnic companions when it came to carrying the wine and cheese, she said. Ms Barns said wild dogs were a considerable problem in the Eumundi Yandina region which she experienced first hand on her farm about six years ago. At the time she had llamas in two paddocks and sheep in a third. One night without her or her husband hearing a sound dogs passed through both of the llama paddocks before reaching the sheep. “About eight of the 12 sheep were killed,“ she said. Since then sheep have been placed in the same paddocks as the llamas and there had been no further attacks, she said.
Syla Barns with Ted the llama. According to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries management of wild dogs and declared feral species under the Biosecurity Act 2017 was primarily the responsibility of landholders but there was support from state and local governments. Under its pest survey program Noosa Council undertakes a Biosecurity Surveillance Program on properties across the Shire in collaboration with landholders as well as a range of trapping and poison baiting programs. The Sunshine Coast Council’s Prevention and Control Program targets wild dogs, feral pigs, feral goats, feral cats, feral deer, European foxes, European rabbits and Indian Myna birds. A spokeswoman said almost 700 requests for assistance with feral animal control were received annually. ●

THE LOWDOWN HISTORY GROUP TURNED 21 Members and guests of the Tewantin Heritage and Historical Society celebrated the 21st anniversary of the society’s formation on 12 June with a cruise on the Noosa River courtesy of the Noosa Ferry owners. The Society was formed by passionate local residents and interested Councillors with a view to preserving the history of the Tewantin area. During its lifetime the Society has been involved in local events and has for many years conducted an Historical Walk through Tewantin as part of the annual Noosa Alive Festival. With the assistance of Noosa Council, the Society was able to obtain the hut belonging to Howard Parkyn which was relocated to
central Tewantin providing a home for the Heritage group and where an Information Centre was established a few years later. This celebration was scheduled to coincide with the 17th anniversary of the official opening of the Hut in 2001. Noosa Councillor and society founding member Frank Pardon was present along with Council heritage librarian Jane Harding as well as past presidents and more than 50 current volunteers of the Parkyn Hut Information Centre. During the festivities, Honorary Life Membership was bestowed upon founding members, current president Gail McBurney and Olive Donaldson and celebratory cakes were cut. ●

BOUTIQUE BEER IS JUST FLOODING IN BY MARGARET MACCOLL There used to be one brewery on the Sunshine Coast, the Eumundi Brewery, but with the dramatic increase in interest in boutique brewing there are now about 13 operating in the area. Over the weekend a number of the breweries including a reinvented Eumundi Brewing showcased their products at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show in Nambour. Brewery business partners Chris Sheehan and Allan Tilden restarted the
brewery last year basing it at the Imperial Hotel where the first brewery was based in the 1980s. Chris said today’s product was vastly different from the former product and the appetite for beer had also changed. “The number of breweries shows there’s a thirst for beer,“ he said. “There’s a lot of masterchef-minded people who are game to try something new.“ He said the surrounding breweries brought beers to the region with tastes from around the world and people were more interested in a quality product than quantity. ●

FEAST FOR EYES BY MARGARET MACCOLL As Peter Kuruvita's latest television series Coastal Kitchen Margaret River premieres today on SBS the Noosa chef will celebrate the occasion here by co-hosting a feast with Western Australia winemaker Vanya Cullen. Peter was struck by the many similarities between the Margaret River region and Noosa while filming the series and found there was much more to see in the tourist region than sharks and wine. His six part series takes a look at the beautiful scenery, explores the local produce, sustainable farming, his specialty seafood, the food of traditional owners and gourmet foods of the region. Peter said sustainable farming was very popular in Margaret River just as it is in Noosa and praised the efforts of one farmer for his sustainable practices and ability to live off the grid. "He has this (declared pest) Lily weed. He puts the pigs into it," he said. "They dig up the soil, eat the weeds. He loves these pigs." Peter said the down side of producing animals for food was in having to kill them but he was impressed with his attitude. "They only have one bad day - it doesn't last long and they aren't stressed" he told him. With his passion for seafood Peter said one of the stand out experiences of the venture was pulling a couple of abalone from the rocks without even getting wet and harvesting sea greens. After visiting a fabulous village bakery he
Poultry judge Rob Leck. Peter Kuruvita came up with a recipe for bread and butter pudding using the often discarded ends of the sourdough. "You should never waste a piece," he said. After three decades as an award-winning chef and restaurateur, the Sri Lankan-born chef has diversified his career to encompass the roles of TV presenter, author, industry speaker and restaurant consultant. He brought his signature style in 2013 to Noosa Beach House in partnership with Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort after eight years as executive chef at Sydney's iconic Flying Fish Restaurant and loves the relaxed style of life. Catch the first episode of the series today on SBS or phone Victoria on 5449 4771 to reserve a seat for a six course dinner hosted by Peter and Vanya Cullen. ●
DON’T BE CHICKEN ON PETS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Chickens make lovely pets according to designer Max Hornibrook who was introduced to them through a mate. Now he is a member of Nambour and District Poultry Club and on the weekend entered eight of his Old English game fighting birds into the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show. If poultry is your interest then you’ll know judging soft feather is more difficult than judging hard feather fowl. Having been involved with poultry since he was eight years old it was no trouble for poultry judge Rob Leck, 63, who drew on his extensive knowledge at the Show at Nambour last Friday. It took just a few minutes for Mr Leck
to lift a bird from its cage, take note of the many criteria to consider and make a judgement. The colour of the feathers, the broadness of its back, the way the feathers display, the alignment of their legs and the symmetry of their wattles dangling from their chins were just a few of elements Mr Leck took into account when he examined and compared each bird. And the fowl, sensing they were in experienced hands, sat quietly through the procedure. On Friday Mr Leck had two apprentices in tow to show the ropes. Connor and Ethan Speckman have their own chickens at home and were very interested to learn from the expert. ●

BASKET BUDDIES BIGGER, BETTER BY HOLLIE HARRIS Following the success of Basket Buddies’ first two years, with more than 500 families receiving baskets full of food and gifts at Christmas, the group has increased its target this year to 350 baskets - 50 more than last year. The Basket Brigade has been overwhelmed by the generosity of Sunshine Coast families, workplaces, schools and other groups who collected food items each week, for the baskets. This year they will also provide families with recipe cards to make a main meal and desert for Christmas. The food collected by the Buddies each week will make up these recipes. “It’s easy to be a Basket Buddy and anyone can join. For just a few dollars a week, you can really make a difference this Christmas to a Sunshine Coast family in need,“ a spokeswoman said. If you’re able to add one extra food item to your weekly shopping basket (June-November - 24 weeks), sign up NOW to become a Basket Buddy either via our Facebook Page SunshineCoastBasketBrigade or online at www.eepurl.com/du3oW9 or call call the Basket Brigade team on 0411 834 199. You’ll then receive a food list - so you’ll know what to buy each week, starting from this week. Then you just keep collecting your food items right up to the drop off/collection week in late
November. The Basket Brigade team will then tally all the food collected by the Basket Buddies, and work out what they need to buy, if anything, to top up the
350 baskets. All the food donated will be packed into baskets for all nominated families/ individuals, along with a gift for every
family member. All baskets will be delivered by Basket Brigade volunteers right across the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, 15 December. ●

COST OF RE-SHAPING NATURE
LENSCAPE
The Doggy Beach at Noosa Spit has been eroding for quite some time, and I was under the impression that council had hired contractors to come up with a solution. This popular beach is gradually disappearing, but we have heard nothing. The expression 'Nero fiddled while Rome burned’ comes to mind. Perhaps it has been decided to do nothing which would certainly be the cheapest option. There is only about 30m of land separating the main river from Woods Bay, so when that breaks through the places along Noosa Parade will have lovely ocean views! Man can reshape nature to some extent with engineered solutions, but it can be very expensive. Bruce Hallett, Noosa
NBRF WELCOMES NEW FUNDING ARRANGEMENT The proposed new 2018-'21 funding arrangements between Noosa Council and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) as referred to in Noosa Today 14 June article, are a welcome evolution to how we manage this charitable trust and continue to play our part in helping maintain the points of difference that saw Noosa Shire gain recognition by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. After months of discussions with council about the proposed new arrangements, the board sees this evolution as another opportunity to improve its operations and focus on its strengths in supporting science-based projects for a sustainable Noosa future. During our three-year term, the board has worked hard to deliver the programs required by the original agreement. As outlined in the full council report, the NBRF has approved and driven a total of 13 exciting conservation and socio-economic projects at a total value of $2,775,016 with an investment by council of Environment Levy funds totalling $919,916. That’s a 3:1 return on ratepayer funds from additional co-investment on projects we support. Since the NBRF was established in 2015 by council, our board of volunteer directors has acted in accordance of the constitution and direction as set by council, requiring twice yearly public reporting, quarterly presentations to councillors, annual budget requests to council for operational and grant funding and council representation on the board. NBRF applauds council for stepping up to its responsibilities as the manager of the Noosa biosphere reserve and we welcome the new role council has asked us to take on.

WHO CARES ABOUT DETAINED REFUGEES? Today, in our island prison camps, this 12th death, is someone’s husband, father, son and brother. Does anyone else care? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
WHITE MALE PRIVILEGE, OR IS IT? Odds are that as a young white male living in Australia I’m going to do pretty well in life. Odds are that I will find a white-collar job and in that job be paid 20 per cent more than any woman doing the same work. It won’t matter if she has more experience or even if she is more skilled than I am. I am male, and that gives me a certain fortune in our social structure. Odds are that as a male I will be less likely to experience discrimination in the workplace. I won’t be ignored or dismissed when I’m shopping for a car, and it’s unlikely I’ll be harassed or catcalled when I’m walking down the street. Odds are that I will have more freedom of speech, and be more likely to rise to a position of governmental power. I mean, look at our current parliament - 153 men occupy seats versus 73 women. Quite clearly the odds are in men’s favour. Odds are that as a male I will have more freedom to travel the world without risk of being imprisoned. In every substantial religion on the planet today, as a male I occupy a position of power. I could be a priest, a rabbi, a monk, a pope. Women do not get these choices. In some places in the world, women are not even entitled to an education, or allowed to drive. In some places, women aren’t even allowed to walk the streets. Yet in all these places men have political power, they make the laws and they implement them. Truly, it’s a man’s world and the odds are very much in our favour. And yet ...
Thursday, 21 June, 2018
Against these odds ... There are eight suicides in Australia every day. Yes, I know that’s a significant number. And you’d think, given all these great odds in our favour, the percentage of those that are men would be pretty small. And yet ... against the odds, six of those eight people who commit suicide every day across Australia are men. Yes, you heard that correctly. 75 per cent of all suicides in Australia annually are men. Against the odds, men also represent 93 per cent of the prison population across Australia. Roughly 31,000 people are in prisons across Australia, and of those about 29,000 are men. And against the odds, men are one and a half times more likely to be murdered than women. Suddenly it doesn’t feel very much like the odds are in our favour. Sure, there are some undeniable benefits to being a guy. But as you’re hearing, there are some awful downsides too. So what’s behind all this? Could it be that this masculine culture we have - the one that insists we need to be so dominant in our culture - could also be part of the problem? Could it be some kind of prehistoric instinctive male drive that pushes us to either rise to the top of society or brawl it out down in the bottom? There are certainly a number of cultural expectations. The expectation that men have to be tough, strong, the “rock“ of the family. That men are not supposed to cry, that we’re supposed to be strong, tough, brave ... warriors. That we shouldn’t feel complex emotions ... or that if we do, we should be quite capable of putting a lid on them and boxing them away. Boys who don’t play sport can be called weakling, wuss, princess. If we get hurt or humiliated, we have to “suck it up" and keep playing. A few years ago, I was at a party with my family. My uncle was coaching a family game of football. I remember he was giving my 11-year-old cousin instructions. (I was younger, but I remember it really clearly). He would yell stuff like, “SWITCH ON BEFORE
I REACH INSIDE YOU AND SWITCH YOU ON MYSELF!" and other stuff like “TAKE A TEASPOON OF CEMENT AND HARDEN UP!" My cousin started crying, and ran away. And you know what ... the men, the grownup men, who should have known better, made faces at each other. Disappointed faces. And they said things then like, ‘Well...he’s got to learn sometime. We don’t want him turning into a girl.’ So tell me because I’m confused, what’s so wrong about being a girl? Why are we boys constantly being told that we can’t run like a girl, we shouldn’t throw like a girl ... and why does feeling emotion make us, ‘like a girl’? Is it possible that being allowed to express emotions, to sometimes not be strong, not be the warrior, could actually be good for the human soul? Do you ever think that the odds are, our masculine nature - the very thing that makes us so powerful - might just be the exact thing across the world that is causing male lives to be squandered in prison, in suicide and in murder? Somehow, against all the odds, we need to make fundamental changes to our cultural expectations of men. We need to change the way that men are perceived, we need to change from always being the strong brick with no emotions. And more importantly we need to change our culture of men, we need to change how we treat each other. This week we have talked about mental health, physical health, we have played dodgeball, eaten bacon and egg burgers, these things are real, as is our mental health, we can't keep neglecting it. It’s important to talk about these things, to bring them out in the open, that we are stronger when we speak out and show our emotions. And then, maybe then, the odds will change. 1 Cambridge Court, Tewantin In one of Old Tewantin’s most coveted streets, this once grand home retains a regal air about her. The irst home to be built in the Riverview estate on Cambridge Court in the mid-1990s, it is nearly dwarfed by its multi-million dollar neighbours, underscoring the opportunity presented. Her appearance may be a bit thread bare but the astute buyer will see that any expenditure on updating will be greatly rewarded. See past her weathered exterior, the old tiled loor & faded carpets & take in the voluminous crystal chandelier at the front entrance, the Bill Mackay painting on the living room wall & the ceiling height to appreciate the transformation a well-planned makeover would achieve. There is no doubt she needs some work, but with character features throughout, great bones & a picture perfect high-value neighbourhood, this is the restoration project for which you have been looking.
But it is the easy stroll of around 200m that will take you to the river’s edge to put the paddle board in the water, to stroll the river bank to the ferry, or to simply enjoy an afternoon glass of wine with the neighbours that reiterates the power of location in real estate values.

Don’t Risk Your Property Sale With Just Anyone Introducing a fresh approach to real estate in Noosa. Founded by award-winning local real estate agent, Alex Harris, Noosa4Sale will change the way you feel about real estate agents. “Amazing agent. Delivered exactly what she said. Excellent communication and advice. Would be the best agent that I have ever used. Highly recommended.” S Spencer, Noosa Heads “Alex is an exceptional agent! We found her to be knowledgeable about the current local real estate market and professional in her attitude. An added bonus, a lovely, friendly demeanour with none of the slick salesperson spiel we all detest! We felt Alex was always working for us the vendors and not after just a ‘quick sale‘. She kept us well informed during the process and seemed to be available to our calls 24/7! We highly recommend her.” T & M Phelps, Noosaville “I needed to sell my property quickly and get the best possible price for it. I found that task to be stressful, but when I chose Alex Harris to be my agent her professional manner, communication skills and compassion soon put me at ease. With Alex’s knowledge and strategy she had immediate results and my house was sold within a couple of days. Thank you Alex! You have been a delight to deal with and I have found you to be an exceptional agent.” I Mayes, Peregian Beach

is one of the largest and the most successful agencies in the region, with a sizeable presence in Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin and Gympie. It has particularly strong ties to the community and regularly supports local events and charities. Laguna Real Estate owner and principal, Olivier Miller, said she was humbled by the nomination. "That Laguna has been recognised for its excellent contribution to the real estate industry reinforces the strength of our brand in connecting with our target market and customers," she said. Now in its sixth-consecutive year, the Real Estate Business Awards recognises the achievements of the industry's leading agents, networks, innovators, lenders and property managers across 27 categories. Real Estate Business managing editor Tim Neary said the REB awards were a benchmark for success, and recognised and rewarded those who were driving real estate into the future. "The awards are the most soughtafter business awards for the real estate industry in Australia," he said. "It is a great way to recognise the industry's high-performance agents, property managers, BDMs and businesses, those who are able to flourish in the face of the industry's ongoing challenges." The winners will be announced in Sydney on 19 July. â—?

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
HOUSING - HOW CAN WE ALL HELP
across Australia. The Housing Needs Assessment for Noosa Shire 2017 highlights succinctly the key issues and areas in which Local Government plays a pivotal role in addressing our crisis with essential assistance from State. However, there are two aspects that need to be clarified within
this report, and ultimately this, and a State wide/Australia wide discussion. And that is a) what the definition of 'affordable' is, and b) how do you retain affordability? At a recent housing forum I was able to highlight a number of ways to deliver affordable housing options. These included mixed-model micro developments that
combine open market and community housing for purchase or rent. This may incorporate options for a transportable section (tiny homes?) for short term 'lets' to accommodate transitional circumstances to avoid homelessness. These models are not new, and are already in existence within our community. There is no one 'quick fix' solution to what is a multi-faceted issue. However, we can without doubt address and I am committed to see this community look after its own. This takes your support, as community activism is much more than waving a placard or protesting. Noosa has the opportunity to resolve this crisis through collaboration between community and stakeholders, and codesigning solutions to address our specific requirements. 'Affordability' is about strong, creative and diverse communities that lead the way by confronting shortfalls or failures in systems in their own unique way. Let's be bold. Let's self-determine our future, and resolve our concerns, as Noosa is historically well known for. I look forward to your thoughts, suggestions and submissions in response to the Discussion Paper we have uploaded into Noosa 360 . Please join our Noosa 360 Facebook Chat Group, as the issue of affordable housing is the responsibility of all of us. Never forget ... together we can. â—? Until next month, Sandy
12390695-RC25-18
It is fast becoming one of the most critical and important issues in Australia. However for a decade or more it has been a major issue in our own community. Housing affordability. As traditional workforces becomes increasingly disrupted, essential services and pillar industries relegated to 'lower income' categorization, retirement investments outstripping our next generations capacity for home ownership ... we see house prices continue to soar resulting in a range of ramifications impacting our social fabric, health and capacity. In Noosa, our key industry workers and vulnerable including those in the 55 plus age group are becoming 'couch surfers', 'car campers' and at times homeless. More than ever it is vital to provide our people with the safety of secure housing. This is a much larger issue than statistics show due to a number of factors that we need to talk honestly about. Pride and selfesteem. Many residents of all demographics and various income brackets do not speak about the hidden hardship of paying up to 80% of their income on rent or attaining the 'great Australian dream' of home ownership. This is creating a raft of stressors and costs to our people, our organisations and our community. This current situation demonstrates a long standing chronic underinvestment in community housing and a failure of housing policy here, across the whole of South East Queensland, and in many other locations

COPS IN SCHOOL BRING REAL-LIFE FOCUS Pomona Police Sergeant Dan McNamara and Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott gave Year 9 and 12 students some real life insights into policing last week to assist students with their term papers on the public's perception of police. Year 12 student Carolyn Medloby said the students learned there was more to police work than that seen on reality television and were excited to be able to hold a real set of police handcuffs and baton. Sergeant Dan McNamara told the group police were "regular guys with families and hobbies" and policing was a thankless but important job.
"We often save people from accidents or bring people home and sometimes we never hear from them again, but it has its rewards every day," he said. Sgt McNamara said the most common crimes police dealt with in the Sunshine Coast area involved domestic violence, traffic offences and thefts. "We are here to help you. We are here to save your ass, not shoot it," he said. Sgt Scott said before he joined the police force he thought police were like robots. "I was gobsmacked to see a cop holding hands with his wife." he said. "I thought police officers weren't allowed to be married. It is
important to me that people know that police are just normal people." Sgt Scott said being run over by a ute driven by a man suspected of breaking into a Cooroy business in January 2017 was one of the worst experiences from his 35 years as a police officer. Carolyn said the presentations were most enjoyable. "I found asking the police officers questions and found listening to their extensive knowledge and experience very helpful for my upcoming assessment," she said. ●

PLANNED BURNS The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) have been conducting planned burns within the Noosa Headland section of Noosa National Park, to the rear of properties on Honeysuckle Lane at the eastern end of Noosa Junction, and in the Peregian area adjacent to Cormorant Crescent, this week. The aim of these burns is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas to reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration. ●

SOUND CLOUD BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sound Cloud is a wonderful event where you, the audience, become the choir for the night. This contemporary choir gives everyone a chance to sing well-known, well-loved songs with a drink in hand and mates around. It is an all-inclusive event and they welcome everyone - experienced singers as well as those who happily belt out a song in the shower or car with the music turned up loud. There is no preparation required by choristers before the Sound Crowd events. Your guides for the evening will teach you one song in an hour and a half, with the group all performing it together at the end of the night. Take the main vocal or try out some harmonies. Vocal chords like to be lubricated, and the fact that the Eumundi Sound Crowd event is being held in The Brewery (an event space overlooking a working brewery), well, it just writes itself. All the words and musical accompaniment is supplied so participants simply need to grab a drink and join in. Whether you sing high, low or just like to belt out the melody, we will make groups and learn parts together. Sound Crowd’s Analiese and her husband Mike Long have been Eumundi locals since returning from overseas in 2012. Both have careers in the industries they love, music, theatre and circus - travelling all over Australia and the globe, but always returning to the Eumundi community they call home. ● 40 NOOSA TODAY

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - While We're At It
Save the Date by Morgan Matson
Set It Up, Netflix, Premieres, 15 June
It has been seven years since The Mighty Mighty Bosstones released an album, although it might feel far longer than that because who remembers much else except their 1997 banger The Impression That I Get? Green Bay, Wisconsin is a groovy opener that will make you want to get on your feet and have a boogie, with the exuberant sound of vocalist Dicky Barrett and their extensive range of musical instruments including trombone. A 14-track album can be a bold move and While We're At It can start to sound the same after a while. But versatility can be found in Here We Are, Divide and the catchy Absolutely Wrong. ●
Charlie Grant's older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can't wait—for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect. The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. ●
Do you remember rom-coms? They used to be a dime a dozen at the movies - Meg Ryan/Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks/Hugh Grant (or the like) starring in movies that were cute and moderately funny. Set It Up is so fantastically rom-com that you’ll wonder why it hasn’t been made before or maybe it has - over and over. Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) are two overworked, underpaid executive assistants beaten down by Manhattan’s rat race. This is a fun, don’t think too hard, piece of escapism reuniting Everyone Wants Some co-stars Deutch (daughter of Back to the Future’s Lea Thompson) and Powell. ●

It’s hard to believe, but it has been four decades since the release of The Angels sophomore album Face to Face. The seminal release firmly put the band on the map - both in Australia and internationally - spawning tracks that still hold an iconic place in Aussie music history such as Take A Long Line, Marseilles, After The Rain and Be With You, to name a few. The multi-platinum release was described as a ‘watershed’ for the band and changed the way Australian bands toured. Take A Long Line is one of The Angels most loved songs. It was a smash for the Face to Face album, peaking in the national single charts at #26 and remaining there for a massive 29 weeks. The album itself remained in the charts for a year-and-a-half - an impressive achievement for a band on their second release, and one who, unbeknown to them at the time, would create the musical soundtrack of a generation. 3D PROGRAM FOR SELECT FEW A four-day intensive 3D Design and Printing Course will be made available to eight participants. The four-day program will introduce participants to the concepts needed to design, model and manufacture simple objects from idea to print. “The design stage is crucial in 3D printing as 3D printers create an object layer by layer, or slice by slice. Understanding this process can help save the designer time and money,” Noosa Library spokeswoman Tracey King said. The course will explore some of the applications for 3D printing technology, including robotics, rapid prototyping, life sciences, construction and more. Computer scientist and embedded systems engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the industry, Malte von Ruden, will lead the course.
BY HOLLIE HARRIS Jet black ice cream, macarons, smoothies, cheese, bagels, buns and pizza crust made with activated charcoal as a colorant look pretty cool on Instagram and Pinterest photos, depending on what you find appetising. Realsimple.com explains how it's made: "Activated charcoal is the byproduct of burning coconut shells, wood or other plant materials. If that sounds dangerous to eat, don't worry: charcoal made from coconut is harmless and is different from consuming food that has been charred or burnt." Besides being a colorant, charcoal has a reputation as a detox remedy, though that use might not hold up to scrutiny. Parents and medical personnel have long known of charcoal's use as an antidote to severe poisoning or overdoses due to its binding capabilities - adhering to the toxic contents before the body has a chance to absorb them. The drawback is that it also can take up nutrients or medicines, which may be a good reason to avoid this latest food fad. "It can indeed absorb some substances but not all, and it can only do that in the gut. This means that for detoxifying the body it is next to useless in many situations," says Exeter University professor
NEWS
Edzard Ernst, an author of many books on alternative medicine. "It absorbs things that the body needs — for instance, medications, which can lead to problems, of course. Foremost, it absorbs water from the gut, which can lead to dehydration and constipation." Another way to color food black is to mix up your own black tint, using red, green and blue food coloring. Generally speaking, use equal amounts of each color; adjust as needed. ●

TRY THIS ‌ Empowerment
WORKSHOPS FOR TWEENS, TEENS BY HOLLIE HARRIS These school holidays, give your daughter an invaluable experience she will hold onto for life. Our daughters are met with so many personal challenges these days. With the fast pace of life and the internet teaching so many confusing and damaging messages to our young ones, it is more important than ever to equip them with the tools to navigate their way into womanhood. Enhancing our girls' sense of understanding and compassion for themselves and each other is a vital component to their future well-being. Held at the Sunshine Beach Primary School, "Empower Me" is a fun, safe and nurturing program for girls aimed at setting them up with all the tools they need to create the life of their dreams. Raising an eleven-year-old daughter and two pre-teen sons, local dad and women's transformational coach, Scott O'Meara, felt compelled to reach out to the younger generation. With sincere intentions to guide our young ladies toward an empowered future, Scott's warm and grounded nature brings an important positive male aspect into these workshops."So many of my adult clients have said they wish they had access to these skills when they were young," says Scott. With three beautiful children of her own, Sunshine Beach mum and women's wellness and mindset coach, Britta says the workshops are so important for our daughters and grand daughters. "They can learn the tools to ignite their inner spark so that they can thrive through

life feeling empowered," she says. The girls will be introduced to guided meditations, relaxation and self-love and also how to identify dreams and goals by creating a powerful vision board to take home. They will learn tools to help them work through fear, how it can affect their daily life and how to let it go. They will learn how to protect themselves from negativity and also gain a deeper understanding of their own
emotions along the journey into adulthood. These are tools they will use throughout their whole lives. MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS RUN IN BY HOLLIE HARRIS Considering the mental and physical benefits of going for a run, it is no wonder that runners are more peaceful and positive people. You can use your daily jog as a means of just taking some time for yourself or tap into these great reasons to bring running into your life 1. Switching Stress for Happiness Hormones If you have had a stressful day at the office, then running is a fantastic way to relax. In fact, all forms of aerobic exercise balance out the harmful effects of stress hormones, such as cortisol, by producing endorphins - the happiness hormone. Endorphins act as natural antidepressants and boost mental health. 2. Better Sleep Unlike stressing about work or running errands throughout the entire day, running uses up your energy in the best possible way. You will be tired, but not exhausted; so running limits insomnia by regulating your energy levels and sleep time and provides better quality sleep.
3. Increased Energy Levels While running makes you go to sleep easier and faster, it also keeps your energy levels high and stable - and we are not just talking about the immediate effects of “runner’s high.” It only takes three days of aerobic exercise per week to eliminate daily fatigue and lethargy in the long term. 4. Upgraded Self-Esteem When you run, it is you versus yourself. Sometimes you might want to stop and go home, or you will think about giving up and watching TV instead. However, when you keep running and push yourself to your limits, you train your mind to set goals and follow through with your intentions. In addition to boosting your self-esteem, running will help you learn to be patient with yourself and give everything your best shot. 5. Enjoying Nature and Fresh Air What can be more beneficial for your health than getting some fresh air and spending more time in nature? By simply spending time outdoors, you are soaking up vitamin D which is known to reduce your chances of experiencing depressive symptoms. ● noosatoday.com.au

“Howzat!” Patsy Fayne’s Claim to Fame Patsy Fayne or Patsy May as she was then, was the first Australian woman to take a wicket at Lord’s. The year was 1976. “What did the toffs of Lord’s think about this?” we asked Patsy. “Not much. Not only did they not want women playing at their sacred ‘gentleman’s’ cricket ground, they were firmly of the opinion that women didn’t even know how to play cricket.” From 1968 to 1976, Patsy was a member of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team. Her first tour was to Jamaica in1973. She also played against England and New Zealand. Harassment by the Paparazzi, sex discrimination, intrigue and questionable antics by opposing teams were all par for the course. Patsy is the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Tewantin Noosa Probus Club to be held at the RSL, Tewantin on Monday June 24th commencing at 9.30 a.m. Visitors welcome. ●

For the past eighteen months Phil has assisted the roll out of the 'Keeping It In Kin Kin' project, and is well qualified to provide an update on progress to date. The Kin Kin Creek catchment, due to its current and historic land use and its geological characteristics, is the major contributor of sediment into the Noosa River catchment. Excessive erosion is detrimental to biodiversity, fisheries habitat, water quality and agricultural productivity. Phase Two of this project will prioritize and implement strategic on-ground works to protect and repair erosion prone areas. To learn more about this important initiative to protect the integrity of the Noosa River waters the forum starts at 10.30am with coffee on offer at 10am. The morning concludes at 12.15pm. TRIBUTE TO SOCCEROOS BY EMILY TALBOT
The Dolphins with Wallaby Scott Higginbotham.
DOLPHINS MEET THE LEGEND BY RON LANE On Friday afternoon at the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club, in keeping with their policy of promoting grass roots rugby for their youth, Rob Frey Chairman of the Dolphins Junior Rugby and his support team, played host to Australian Wallaby Legend Scott Higginbotham. "For our juniors a normal week consists of training on Tuesday and Thursday for our u/13 and 17, with Friday is the day for our u/6 to u/12. Under todays circumstances with our special guest we have a wide range in attendance," said Frey. Travelling with Scott was Heidi Monsour who works for Queensland Rugby Promotions. Their objective was to promote the game in all aspects; meet and greet the families and supporters and also have Scott work with local coaches in running their
well. It is this sort of thing that is great for the World Cup competition." Having started rugby while a student at Southport School on the Gold Coast he has now been capped 32 times for Australia; playing his first test on 27 November 2010 against France. Now as captain of the Queensland Reds he holds the incredible record of being the highest try scoring forward in Super Rugby history. To have such people visit to promote the game and meet the families is a major plus. If this type of event is to continues the Dolphins Rugby Club can only become stronger and in the process definitely make an outstanding contribution to not only the sporting community of Noosa District but tourism as well; for as somebody once said, "Sport puts bottoms on seats." Well done to all involved. ●
Another intense game from Noosa U10 Black against Currimundi as both teams fought hard to score! A great game played by all players, as the defense on the back line really stepped it up! The mid fielders worked well together, with some exceptional passes to the boys up front! Noosa came off with a great win 10-0! Well done Iggy for your great play in goals! Player awards went to Barnaby and Lenny! Fantastic work guys! ●

normal Friday training sessions. With age groups varying from u/6 to u/12 coaching sessions were definitely full of enthusiasm. To have a Wallaby hero who is also captain of the Queensland Reds not only at the club but also on the paddock chatting, coaching and running the ball was a big thrill for these young future senior players. "By visiting country centers," said Scott, "we want people to understand that Queensland Rugby is not just about Brisbane. To visit places like Noosa and promote the game is not easy as we also have to compete against Aussie Rules and Rugby League; so it is very important that we help promote programs for the youth." Regarding youth programs he added, "We compare very well with other countries and our game is really spreading. I spent two years in Japan; it's a relatively young country (for rugby) but the game is going
Saturdays home game was full of atmosphere as players and families came dressed in gold and green colurs in support of the Socceroos! A great day had by all! With a few absent players, Noosa U7 Gold were so grateful to have a fun time on feild with our new friends from the opposing team from Buderim, who lent us a few of their players! Thankyou Buderim! We also welcomed back Oscar Bryant, who has been off feild for a number of weeks after breaking his arm. Oscar came into goals so excited and played exceptional well, stopping every ball that came at him! Zach, Emily, Cruiz and Myles all played well defence and worked hard as a team the entire time. Well done to Myles for your goals! A close game, with the score finished 4-3 to Noosa! Congratulations Oscar who won player of the week! Each week it is so wonderful to see the Under 8 boys play their competitive Saturday games with tenacity, heart and pure enjoyment for the sport of soccer. Despite a loss to the Buddina Seagulls, two amazing goals were scored by Kyro and Xavier for the Noosa team. Congratulation to Man of the Match Zain, and to Nate and Byron for strong defence and teamwork.

Ray White Noosa Dolphin players have been rewarded for their 2018 consistency with selection in the Queensland Country Heelers squads. Noosa A grade captain Brandon Mayhew and Dave Grant were named in the Open squad following last weekends selection trials in Townsville and the Under 19 Country selectors clearly impressed with five Noosa Colts, Tom McAneney, Nick Aylward, Will Christie, Matt Kelly and Ethan Wikiara named in the squad. Capping off these selections was the naming of Will Christie as Under 19 Country Captain following impressive displays in both the under 19 and Open trials. Dolphins president Donald McKill was particularly pleased with the performance of the under 19 players. 'This age group have been performing very well for the

Club President, Doug Toms A huge thanks to the Dragons family who volunteered their time and contributed to the hosting success of the weekend's games at Eumundi's Showgrounds. It was a fantastic effort that saw visiting teams heap praise on the condition of our fields, our players who compete with a sportsmanlike manner, our friendly adult members, our great food - indeed the whole experience!! Best of all our players had a great time and did everybody proud - themselves, parents and club. With full credit going to all of our wonderful coaching staff whose efforts have resulted in a general rise in skill level. U6 Coach Luke Youd Eumundi were well prepared for their home game against an in-strength Brothers team. The cold temperature was the only low statistic on Saturday morning as both teams put on a try scoring bonanza. With multiple try's scored by CJ, Tristan and Nya, fantastic defensive efforts by Henry and Nixon the young Dragons rallied for a valiant outcome. The most impressive try of the day was from young 4 year-old who fended of two Brothers players to run half the field and score in the corner. A great outcome for all on a frosty winters morning. U8 Manager, Shane Davies A strong early effort saw the young Dragons post the first try and keep Caloundra out. An excellent defensive effort and great teamwork in attack saw the boys producing their best half of rugby this season and seesawing first half had the teams level at the break.

for his team running fast and tackling well. Excellent tackling also by Craig Yaxley and Patrick O'Grady, some fine runs made by Will Sparks and Tom Wiles, good ball play by Will Campbell-Jones and overall a club home game to be proud of for the Eumundi Dragons Under 9s. ●
TIGERS TAKING THE SPRING OUT BY JULIAN PITTS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have reversed the tables on Springwood with a thumping twelve goal victory at Weyba road last Saturday. Right from the word go Noosa were just too relentless and skilful around the midfield and were able to keep the dangerous Puma forwards quiet and away from goal. In fact it has been the Tigers ball transition from defence to attack that has them sitting half a game and percentage on top of the Hart Sport Division 1 Ladder. Noosa had winners all over the ground but none better than football manager Mitch Woods who repeatedly found the footy and used great skill and poise when delivering it. Harry Maher continued his great season with another fine defensive performance with fellow defenders Lambourne, Gleeson and Laskey all playing their roll. Tyler Stack and the midfield brigade gathered heaps of the footy throughout the match whilst big forward Liam Kenny bagged five goals in a strong performance in attack. All in all a very good four quarter performance by the Noosa Tigers AFC. So noticeable is the team first mindset that has been implemented by Senior Coach Sammy Faure with the common theme being the 'share and care' amongst teammates clearly shining through. Spida Everitt was a fantastic preview at our Presidents lunch and fantastic to see many of our 1998 Reserves Premiership team at the lunch to celebrate 20 years to the day. Great Tiger names like Hunt, Trompf, noosatoday.com.au
Buntain, Maher, Ellis, Morris, Turner, the Dukes and Keady all thoroughly enjoying themselves as they should. A great day had by all with the Tigers next opponent being the University of QLD in Brisbane on Saturday. On a sad note, the passing of long time tiger supporter Marshall Dick was duly recognised last weekend with all condolences to Marshall's family and friends. Go tigers! Youth Girls Report Only two games for our Tigerettes last weekend with the under 13's having a bye. Our under 17's were first up on Friday night and put up a very solid performance against the top of the table Coolum going down by 11 points in slippery conditions. Skipper India Maddin was outstanding in the centre with Lauren Vaughan equally as impressive across half back. Chloe Pitts and Hayley Beauclerc never gave up whilst up forward Holly Steel and Morgan Maher both booted 3 goals. All in all it was a high scoring free flowing game of girls footy. Our second placed under 15 girls came away with a 68 point win over an undermanned Bribie Island in Brisbane last Sunday. Whilst the win was large, it was a pretty flat performance overall. The girls will need heaps more intensity this weekend as they face one of the flag contenders in Kawana. Co-captains Emma Benjamin and Teesha Fox were good four quarter performers for the Tigers with Maggie Harmer and Mia Woodburn among the best also. All three tiger girls teams with big games this weekend so good luck girls. ●

A strong second half effort from the opposition had them edging just ahead at the final bell. The boys did themselves extremely proud with a fantastic effort all round. A much improved defense, strong straight running and good suppport play showed just how far they have come this season with the promise of great things to come. Go the mighty Dragons! U9's by Ber O Grady A cracker of a game played by the Eumundi Dragons who missed out on a win to Caloundra but who "played like international players" according to coach Brendan Herbert. Man of the match deservedly went to Alex Eaton whose playing rose to a new level in taking possession of the ball with some fine strong tackles. Jett Herbert scored all five trys for the Dragons and put in a big all round effort

LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
The film industry turn out for James Ricketson at Palm Beach.

Drew Pearson works on Noosa World Surfing Reserve submissions at Halse Lodge.
YOU CAN CHECK OUT BUT YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE Big Wave Bob Wood of Turtles fame keeps chastising me for “too many RIPs”, by which he means turning this column into a permanent obituary. So I hasten to add that, despite its title, this week’s column is not an obituary. Well, it sort of is, but for an era rather than a person. A few weeks back my friend Drew Pearson phoned me at about beer o’clock with a rather emotional timbre to his voice. I figured that he’d just started without me, but in fact he had sad news to impart. With time running out on his 25-year leasehold on Halse Lodge, he’d accepted an offer to move out. After more than 22 years of hard work building Noosa’s only Heritage building into its most successful backpacker lodge and the friendliest place for a tipple, come end of the financial year, he would be gone. Of course, Halse Lodge itself is not going anywhere, and the establishment’s fantastic team, headed by Jess and Sarah, will remain with the new lessee, but what you must understand is that this wasn’t a business venture for Drew Pearson, it was his life! In fact, for a lawyer who couldn’t stand the law, it was more than that. It was a second chance career doing something he loved, and every precious moment I’ve spent over a glass of wine on the verandah at Halse with Drew, I’ve felt that infectious vibe. As I’ve written in these pages before: “I can recall noticing the attractive old building,
In 1959 the Anglican Church bought the building and named it after the then archbishop of Brisbane. For the next four decades it went very quiet, a retreat for the Anglican hierarchy that seemed oblivious to Noosa’s tourism explosion, until Drew Pearson came knocking on the archbishop’s door. As Drew told me a couple of years back: “In 20 years we’ve had over 250,000 international travellers stay here, and it gets in the blood. They keep coming back or sending their friends. It’s a bit like the Hotel California - you can check out but you can never leave.” But leave he must - although Drew will no doubt be kept busy with the many honorary community leadership positions he holds and his many mates and colleagues will be raising a glass to him at the hallowed Halse this weekend. This column wishes Drew and Pene all the very best for what lies ahead.
partly hidden by trees up the hill from Noosa Drive, when we first came to live in Noosa more than 28 years ago. Being told that it was run as a retreat for members of the Anglican Church, we remarked: ‘Oh, what a waste!’ No offence, all you Anglicans out there, but Noosa solicitor Drew Pearson felt the same way when he said goodbye to the law, whipped off his tie and took out a 25-year lease on the grand old 1880s guest house. “Drew, then a partner in the firm that still bears his name, Sykes Pearson Miller, hadn’t always been a mild-mannered solicitor. He recalls: ‘In the early ’70s I was a backpacker and travelled overland from Australian to London, and that experience never left me. I came back and worked as a lawyer for 20 years or so, but ultimately I thought that running a backpacker establishment where that lifestyle came to me rather than me go looking for it, would be a wonderful experience, and so it has proven.’” Under Drew’s management, Halse Lodge has become an extraordinary community asset, a place where locals can hang out and relax and mix with international travellers. It’s the only place in Noosa that is Heritage and National Trust listed. Built in 1880 by Walter Hay, the founding father of Noosa, Halse, and Bay View before its name change, has always been a place for low cost accommodation, the longest continuous running timber guesthouse in South East Queensland.
FREE JIMMY! Back in the mists of time, before our Noosa chapter began, we were part of another vibrant artistic community on Sydney’s northern beaches peninsula, one that included some of Australia’s biggest names in film, theatre, arts, literature and journalism, and gathered regularly at the art deco Palm Beach Pictures building on the beachfront to watch old movies and engage in lively debate.

Perhaps one of the lesser known but more outspoken film-makers who was a regular at this and other community events was the long-haired documentarian James Ricketson, a tall bugger with a loud voice who could be as intimidating as he was witty and intelligent. I got along well with James, but you had to mind your ps and qs or cop a verbal hiding. Since those halcyon days, James enjoyed a successful career in film and television in Australia but also became increasingly involved with the culture and politics of Cambodia, adopting a family and frequently going to the barricades over human rights violations. Which is why he was arrested over a year ago while flying a drone over a city square to document a peaceful march in opposition to the government. James Ricketson has now been imprisoned without trial and kept in disgracefully crowded and unhealthy conditions ever since. The Australian government, trying to conclude a boat people deal with the Cambodians, has been somewhat lacklustre in its defence of a 69-year-old citizen who is now in precarious health. So a week or so ago, a bunch of old film industry mates, including such luminaries as Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, Sam Neill and Greta Scacchi, gathered at Palm Beach to protest this inhumane treatment of a man whose life, in large part, has been devoted to ending the inhumane treatment of others. Let’s hope some one was listening. ●

FOR NOOSA, IT’S ONE OF THE BEST For the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club the season 2017/18 would have to be one of the best ever. In the field of competition the results speak for themselves; home from the Australian titles in Perth with an incredible 12 gold 8 silver and 8 bronze medals. However be this as it may the most important factor of all and the reason for the clubs very existence is and always will be beach patrols. And in this, despite the expanding areas of volunteer patrols required of the IRB teams, they have successfully responded to all emergencies in remote regions; and patrols at Main Beach have upheld the proud tradition of no lives lost between the flags. During the month of April the turbulent weather and big seas saw both Main Beach and IRB patrols respond to mass rescues, as well as dangerous rescue situations that occurred amongst rocky outlets of National Park. At the recent Annual Dinner and Presentation of Trophies the solid performance in both areas was acknowledged by the attendance of many VIPs from the world of politics, business, sport, as well as national and state lifesaving administration. In recognition of their performance and dedication we acknowledge the following recipients. The major award of the season Patrol of the Year was Patrol One under the leadership of Patrol Captain Andrew Bock and Vice-Captain Dakota Panetta and the Dave Higgins Memorial Trophy for the Club Person of the Year went to Michael Geary.
Retrieval training. Trevor King and team members. The IRB Driver and Crewman Award went to Greg Schumann and Russell Oakley and that all important support factor Radio Operator was Pablo Aguirre. The Trainer of the Year was Robyn Jenkinson, Cadet of the Year Tilly Giblett and Rookie of the Year Eithan Gilbert. In the surf sports arena Lana Rogers, this years winner of the Open Iron Woman Championship of Australian was named Most Outstanding Female Competitor and Rhys Burrows Most Outstanding Male. For
the team events the team of the year was the Open Female Taplin and in boats the Crew of the Year was the U/19 Female Scrub Turkeys. Other outstanding recipients were u/17 Female Club Champion Electra Outram and u/15 Male Kai Thompson. Electra was also a member of the Female Taplin Relay and Kai also received recognition as the Most Outstanding Youth; and in Surf Rescue Competition Most Outstanding went to Lara Porter.
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
Yesterday Wednesday 20 June, Lana Rogers Noosas Australian Open Iron Woman Champion took her place in the Australian team as it left for Japan to compete for the Sanyo Bussan Cup. "I am really looking forward to representing my country and also being coached and mentored by Shannon Eckstein." We wish Lana and her Australian team mates the best of luck. Following on to their successful season in the Australian Surf Rowers League (the top competition for boats in Australia) the u/19 girls crews are already back in the boats. "It's just light sessions," said Coach/Sweep David Tomba. "We are working on techniques and also doing a bit of distance to rebuild their endurance." Late July will see the master boat crew the Condors, the veterans of last seasons George Bass Marathon, plus others travel north for the Yepoon -Great Keppel Island Carnival an event that aims to promote boat competition in the far north regions of Mackay and Yepoon. Also back in training are the IRB squads with sessions being conducted on Noosas North Shore. With the increasing demands being put on these teams in their performance of roving patrols, the training sessions are now virtually twelve months of the year thus ensuring that the team numbers are up to the required level. It may be winter but the training never stops. ●

FISHING THE DEEPER HOLES PROVIDES QUITE THE PAY OFF! The Noosa River has shown her versatility over the last week for those targeting jewfish, try fishing the deeper holes in the upper reaches. Try to mix up your approach, try changing from vibes to big paddle tail soft plastics. The banks around the river mouth are continuing to provide anglers with some stonker flathead. Trolling bright deep diving hardbodies is the best option. Trolling lures is great for covering large areas and can be an effective way of finding schooling fish. Tailor are in good numbers with some nice fish taken last week taken around Woods Bays and Munna Point. Trevally are also in the mix with plenty of fish taken on surface in the low light periods. For the bait anglers a slow retrieve using lightly weighted small pilchards is a good option. Good numbers of bream continue to be taken with the bridge pylons and pontoon a hot spot, try using cut baits of mullet fillets or chook gut. Whiting have again been in plentiful around the Dog Beach and Weyba creek. Fishing worms, yabbies and peeled prawns has been the ideal baits. The weather for the offshore fisherman played the game again on the weekend. Both Jew Sholes and Sunshine Reef fished well for smaller snapper, sweetlip and tuna. With the water so clear burley is key, and if you can put a burly pot on the bottom you will stand a much better chance of catching better fish. The divers tell me there are some noosatoday.com.au
outstanding jew on the closer reefs so if you get a window where you can do an over-nighter you stand a great chance of bagging one. Large whole baits like mullet and tailor are perfect for the jew. Up on North Reef snapper and sweetlip are in good numbers with occasional pearly taking slimy mackerel. Heading out to Chardon's reef we are seeing snapper, maori cod and spangled emperor. Soft plastics and micro jigs have been working well with anglers having to work the lures with the near perfect conditions. Further out, the Barwon Banks seems to be the pick with good snapper, pearl perch, moari cod and cobia all on the menu. Best baits have been flesh baits, large squid and floated pillies. The beaches have been busy this week with good sized dart at the top of the tide. Most fish have come from the close gutters with mullet strips, prawns and worms bagging the better catches. A good tip is to use bait holder hooks giving the bait that little extra time in the strike zone. Tailor are started to come back in to the gutters with some nice choppers taken between the third cutting and Teewah. Make sure to take plenty of pillies and keep you line tight to avoid missing the bite. Once you get on to a school try using slugs, remember the more anglers the better when it comes to fishing for tailor. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
