Guy hit the right notes Singer Guy Sebastian shot to fame on Australian Idol 15 years ago - before any of today's Dandenong Primary School students were born. But their warm and enthusiastic welcome on Monday 18 June proved he'd continued to amass fans long after the talent show left television screens. See page 19 for the full story.

Avocare will keep feeding thousands of vulnerable people in Greater Dandenong and beyond thanks to an eleventh-hour lifeline. In April, the Journal revealed that the charity needed to raise $100,000 in 90 days to keep its head above water. On Thursday 21 June, Link Health and Community (Link HC) announced it was bringing Avocare under its umbrella. "It's going to be fantastic for the community because Avocare in isolation will not do what Avocare in partnership with Link can do," Avocare founder Trish Keilty said. "We want to increase the number of food relief and material aid into the area and hope-
fully work with our charities in more than one way - develop relationships with our charities. "I'm excited. "It's been a hard, long road and this is a fantastic outcome not only for my charity but for the Avocare staff who stood by me throughout this whole thing." Link Health and Community is a not-forprofit that provides medical, health and support services to improve health and wellbeing in Melbourne's East and South-East, and throughout eastern Victoria. Ms Keilty, Greater Dandenong's reigning Citizen of the Year, started Avocare in 2003. Weekly, 125 charities in the Greater Dandenong and surrounds pick up and distribute 23 tonnes of rescued food to struggling families

and those who would otherwise go hungry. Ms Keilty said the food delivered was equivalent to 32,000 meals. "The cost to deliver one of our meals is just $3.30," she said. "At our distribution warehouse, 150 people on our training and employment programs actively assist in the dissemination of the donated food and material aid." Link HC board chair Raff Ciccone said: "Our relationship with Avocare will not only offer financial security but also opportunities to connect our clients with what each of us has to offer." "Avocare has a strong food security and workplace training base, working with people on their immediate needs like food on the ta-

ble while still working to prevent poverty and homelessness by providing longer-term solutions such as school-based training," a Link HC statement said. "By joining together, our most vulnerable community members will be given access to a wrap-around service that will help with the basics of life - health, food, education and jobs." Link HC executive office director Sally Ann Nadj said Avocare would stay in its Dandenong South warehouse for now. "We certainly don't want to change their business or change their community face at all," she said. "We'll be in the back end keeping the engine running."

Works progress to demolish former Civic Centre and Library Demolition works for the old Civic Centre and Narre Warren Library are in full swing, with two excavators now on site. To accommodate for this and ensure safety for all, the temporary fence line has been pushed out and approximately 70 car parks are now unavailable for the remainder of the works, expected to be completed by November 2018. The works are being completed in two phases with phase one occurring now, the demolition of the buildings. The second phase of the project includes bulk earthworks, the construction of an additional 79 space carpark and re-establishing the area for public use. IN BRIEF
Ex-partner dragged through the street By Cam Lucadou-Wells A heroin addict has dragged and kicked his expartner in Springvale’s main street after she refused to give him more than $50, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 18 June. The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to assault by kicking and threatening to inflict serious injury with a pocket-knife in Springvale Road on 22 May. After meeting with the accused outside a bank, the victim agreed to give him $50, according to an agreed prosecution summary. He spotted a $100 note in her pocket but was refused any further money. An argument escalated in which he dragged the victim by the hand as he rode his bicycle. He berated her for causing a scene. When she handed him $100 to quell his an-
ger, he produced a multi-tool pocket-knife. “Because of you the whole street knows we’ve had an argument,” he told her. “Don’t make me stab you with this knife. I’ll cut your neck. I am not afraid to go to jail.” He followed her down the street, ramming her with his bike. At one point, he grabbed her by the neck of her jumper, swung her around several times and kicked her in the side and legs. In the midst of the scene, he also got into a fight with an unknown male over a cigarette. He continued to follow on his bike until she reached Springvale police station. He was arrested and remanded in custody until the court hearing. The man’s lawyer told the court that the man’s escalating violence was due to his heroin dependency.
In recent weeks, he started treatment on the opoid-addiction medication, suboxone, at Frankston Hospital. “He has an insight into his drug dependency and he is wanting to do something about it The man arrived without family as an asylum seeker nearly a decade ago. He was born in a Thai refugee camp, where his mother died a few months later. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen issued a full family-violence intervention order banning the man from any contact with the victim. Mr Vandersteen noted the man’s 27 days in custody, his guilty plea and available treatment. He indicated that the man would be assessed and sentenced to a community corrections order on 19 June.
Soccer shines bright in Harmony Square Harmony Square hosted a soccer celebration to kick off Australia's World Cup campaign. The Saturday 16 June event also encouraged visitors to support the Team 11 bid, to bring the A-League and W-League to Greater Dandenong. The live broadcast of the Socceroos versus France World Cup game was on the big screen at night. During the day, teens and adults all played the world game. Eight teams representing the City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health, Victoria Police, the CFA and Street Soccer competed in the Community Cup, and an exhibition match to launch a new health and fitness initiative.

An online petition is encouraging opposition to a Dandenong RSL plan for 11 new pokies. The Alliance for Gambling Reform is running the 'No More Pokies Dandenong' campaign. This follows Greater Dandenong Council writing a formal submission against the application to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR), and agreeing to give testimony. "Did you know that within a 2.5 kilometre radius of the Dandenong RSL there are 401 poker machines that take more than $42.1 million from the community every year," the alliance said. "Yet despite this, Dandenong RSL have applied for 11 poker machines to add to its existing 63.
"These figures are some of the worst in the state, and the Dandenong RSL is adding more pressure on our services, creating more harm to our community and taking their greed too far." The Dandenong RSL's submission said the new EGMs would put an extra $50,000 per year into its welfare program and $65,000 per year to employ a welfare officer. It said the increased gambling revenue would also fund a $2.7 million refurbishment. Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL Sub-Branch general manager Greg Betros said: "The application is currently before the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation and that is the appropriate forum for exploration of the issues relevant to the RSL's application."
Police are hunting a failed carjacker who tried to upgrade his bicycle in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Antonio Meleisea said a 71-year-old Dandenong man was driving on Edith Street about 7.30am on Sunday 17 June. A man on a push bike came to a stop in front of the Nissan Pulsar near Market Street. Det Sen Const Meleisea said the rider made up a story to get the victim's attention then tried to snatch his car keys from his hand. The victim held onto the keys during a struggle and got back into his car. The cyclist circled the Pulsar before riding north down Market Street. He was described as African in appearance and aged in his early twenties. He was wearing tracksuit pants and a light blue hoodie, rode a dark-coloured bike and spoke with an Australian accent. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information. Police are hunting a man who exposed himself to teens in Springvale South. Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) detectives are appealing for public help following three wilful and obscene exposure incidents in Burden Park. The victims, aged 13 to 15 years, were all walking through the park between 4pm and 4.30pm when the man approached, exposed himself and committed an indecent act in front of them. The first incident occurred in November last year, the second in April and the third on Tuesday 12 June. Following the most recent instance, the man was last seen walking along Janine Road, Springvale South. Investigators released an image of a man they believe could assist with their inquiries. The man is perceived to be Asian, with long black hair and a heavy build. He was wearing a grey windcheater, black tracksuit pants with two white stripes at the ankles, and black shoes with white soles. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au with any information.

"Dandenong is experiencing great harm from the high density of poker machines in its community. "We do not want more pokies in the Dandenong RSL making matters even worse." The alliance will ask the VCGLR to reject the application and provided an online petition form for others to lend their voice to the push. "The extremely high density of poker machines in one area has extraordinarily negative impacts on the community," the alliance said. "Seven people a day are reporting family violence in Greater Dandenong. "We know there is a link between family violence and the density of poker machines in an area. "That was a staggering 2338 reports of family violence last year.

A stranger placed his hand over a woman’s mouth as she crossed a Springvale street. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Antonio Meleisea said the incident happened on Springvale Road about 9.20am on Monday 11 June. The Springvale woman was on her way to work when the man approached at a pedestrian crossing. He placed his hand over her mouth and the startled 24-year-old victim screamed and ran away. The man walked off in the opposite direction to the east side of Springvale Road, “ranting and raving”. “There were no demands made, no threats made and no injuries,” Det Sen Const Meleisea said. Nothing was stolen during the altercation. The victim described the man as of Indian appearance and aged in his late thirties or forties with a medium build and black hair. He was wearing a black zip-up jacket, black jeans and a backpack. Det Sen Const Meleisea urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

27 June 1918 Gippsland Co-operative Bacon Curing Co Ltd - Annual Meeting On Wednesday June 26 the seventh annual meeting of the Gippsland Co-operative Bacon Curing Co Ltd was held in the Dandenong Town Hall. Mr T J McGalliard, chairman of directors, presided over a large attendance of shareholders. The director's report was tabled as: Your directors have much pleasure in submitting here with the balance sheet for the year ended 30 April 1918 which shows the position of the company has considerably improved since our last report. The number of pigs handled during the year was 21,739 as compared with 17,469 for the previous 12 months. The trading account shows the satisfactory gross profit of ÂŁ6,995/4/1.
27 June 1968 $8000 park fountain bid criticised Vigorous protests were made at Dandenong Council on Monday by Cr Keith Miller against the proposal for a fountain in Dandenong Park. Council had already decided in committee to accept an offer of $2000 by Dandenong Rotary toward installing a fountain. A further committee decision was to apply for $2000 from the Municipalities Assistance Fund towards the cost. Suggested designs for the fountain are pending the arrival from America of pictures of similar structures there. No estimate of cost has been made although a vague statement at Monday's meeting as 'around the $8000 mark'. Cr Miller said he was not against the city having a fountain but he had a number of alternatives.
Cr Miller said Dandenong Park was visited by few people and was open to vandalism. "We will find out one morning that half the fountain is gone and all the taps turned on."
20 years ago 29 June1998 Double dipping Jason, 12, will probably never forget his first swim in the Dandenong Valley School's hydrotherapy pool. When he and carer Di Irving splashed in last Tuesday it marked the end of a three-year wait for the facility. Many of the school's intellectually disabled students need hydrotherapy treatment, but with the nearest centre more than 45 minutes' drive away, access was becoming increasingly difficult. The pool was opened by the premier, who said he was thrilled with the $600,000 centre. "When you look at the face of child who is
enjoying that pool it makes it all worthwhile," Mr Kennett said.
5 years ago 24 June 2013 CCTV cameras win praise Police are praising new security cameras installed in one of Dandenong's busiest precincts as a deterrent against criminals and vandals. Commander Tracy Linford of Victoria Police said the 13 cameras in and around Foster Street would help Dandenong. "We're delighted about this initiative because it will deter some crime because people will be aware cameras are activated and it will made them think twice about what they might do." The cameras were installed thanks to a $250,000 State Government grant and $50,000 from the construction company Grocon. The first ones were switched on in February.

Our basic technique hasn't changed over the generations," Melina said. "You can't change good technique." She set up in the market two years ago. "Myself and my sister and my brothers, we are fifth generation bakers," she said. "It's a really proud tradition that we have as a family. "I feel really blessed to be in this with all my siblings. Their mum, Elaine, makes jams and preserves using berries and fruits bought from Dandenong Market. Pies, pastries, quiches, tarts and slices are also on the menu. Melina's brother Anthony co-owns the store in addition to his bread-baking duties. "Dad said baking was like a life force," he said. "I want to see our generation take it on its next journey. He said that in addition to the traditional breads, Melina's Bakery and Larder has moved with the times. They introduced brioche buns, for example, when they were the must-have for burger enthusiasts.

Electoral boundary shake-up
Who’s in my bed? By Cam Lucadou-Wells In a twist on the Goldilocks tale, a man has been found naked and asleep in a vacated rental home in Springvale. The 38-year-old chef had become homeless, two weeks after being released from prison, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 18 June. He broke in through a faulty glass back door and set up base in the master bedroom. A tenant, who was due to move in, unlocked the front door and entered. The tenant discovered raw meat in the kitchen sink, and clothes on the floor before finding the intruder on the bed.
Police ordered the man to remove himself and his property. He also faced a charge of shoplifting $193 of groceries from a Springvale supermarket in contravention of his bail conditions. His defence lawyer told the court that the crimes were committed out of desperation due to the man being “forced out” of his postprison accommodation. The man had arrived from Vietnam as an infant then worked as a trained chef for at least 15 years. He had succumbed to a heroin addiction, which featured prominently on his criminal record, the lawyer said. Since the incident, the man’s sister had of-
fered him a place to stay, with the hope of finding work. He was seeking treatment for depression, a heart condition and Hepatitis C. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen initially sentenced the man to a corrections order which focused on drug treatment. However the man opted instead for a jail term. His lawyer told the court that the man had previously been unable to abide by his CCO conditions. He had recently served three months’ jail for breaching a community corrections order. The man was imprisoned for 21 days.
Some Greater Dandenong residents will soon find themselves with a new federal representative. The augmented Electoral Commission for Victoria announced changes to federal electoral divisions on Wednesday 20 June, ahead of the Federal Election due next year. The new boundaries will apply from Friday 13 July and will ensure each seat is home to 106,954 electors, plus or minus 10 per cent. Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus said he would welcome Cheltenham, Dingley Village, Heatherton, Highett and Moorabbin into his electorate. "I am sorry that from the next election I will no longer represent residents of Carrum Downs, Sandhurst, Skye, Noble Park and the parts of Keysborough north of Cheltenham Road," he said. "I can assure these residents that I will continue to represent them right up until Election Day." The Isaacs gains are Hotham's losses, but MP Clare O'Neil will add part of the neighbouring Chisholm electorate to her seat, including Oakleigh, Huntingdale, Clayton, Chadstone and Notting Hill. She'll also take parts of Wheeler's Hill, Notting Hill, Glen Waverley and Mulgrave from Bruce MP Julian Hill. Bruce will keep part of Springvale, Noble Park North, Dandenong North and Dandenong and take on Endeavour Hills, Doveton, Hallam and Eumemmerring from Holt. Holt, represented by Anthony Byrne will grow to the east to take in Narre Warren South, which was in La Trobe, and south from Cranbourne to the coastal villages that are now in Flinders.
Snapshot of an expo for their future Keysborough students took a glimpse into the world of work and study at an in-school expo. Keysborough College's Acacia campus hosted the event for students in Years 10 to 12 on Tuesday 19 June. More than 800 students took the opportunity to gather information and resources from industry and tertiary representatives from major universities, local TAFE colleges, private colleges and registered training organisations. They also heard keynote presentations from people working in a variety of careers or industries. The event is part of the school's pathways program, which aims to provide students with insight and direction for their futures.

Medical mess mystery Dandenong drivers found Stud Road strewn with medical waste during their morning commute. A motorist called the Journal to highlight the trash situation early on Thursday 21 June. He said it appeared a garbage truck dropped a bag of surgical waste on Stud Road overnight, near Herbert Street. He said cars had since hit the bag and dragged rubbish for about 300 metres, and he’d spotted surgical gloves among the debris. The Journal reached out to Greater Dandenong Council for comment. A spokeswoman said a council staff member noticed the mess and logged it into the council request system in the morning, and the council removed the rubbish.

Students quiz Guy “How old am I? That was on the restricted question list!” Singer Guy Sebastian had students in stiches at Dandenong Primary School on Monday 18 June with his humorous responses to their endless stream of questions. “I’m 24. I was nine years old when I was in Idol. Who’s good at maths? Leave,” he said before adding, “I’m 24 plus 12,” and quickly moving on. He replied “because I was young and foolish” when one student asked why he had tattoos. “That’s a good question actually. This is like 60 Minutes now,” he said. Guy also handed out advice: “If anyone asks you who is the best band in the world, the answer is The Beatles.” Earlier he’d perused classroom bookshelves and exclaimed: “Oh my gosh, I was obsessed with Paul Jennings. I’ve got to take a picture of this.”

Greater Dandenong Councillors Matthew Kirwan and Sean O’Reilly with Mayor Youhorn Chea met with federal MPs in Canberra to speak up for asylum seekers. Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton was among those they met to express their fears about the impact of the planned Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) cuts. Cr Kirwan said: “Any person seeking asylum that is deemed to be work ready will lose financial support and access to support services leaving them likely destitute in a municipality like Greater Dandenong that currently has 17 per cent unemployment.” The council in April agreed to advocate against the move.

Cold night of cash Bangholme students raised $23,000 to provide more than 240 homeless people with shelter. More than 60 students, alumni and staff braved cold temperatures during Cornish College's annual winter sleep-out event on Friday 15 June. The record fund-raising total will go to charity Backpack Bed for Homeless, which produces an award-winning backpack/ swag. Cornish College chaplain Jarrod Davies said the funds raised would help 240-plus people "sleep less rough, safer and with more dignity". "Our students had fun on the night, yet this is combined with a deep inquiry into the issue of homelessness and how we can help going forward," he said. "Our staff and students get a tiny taste of what it is like to be cold, hungry and without a home - and it's our hope they will go on to keep making a difference in this, and other areas in our community." On the night, 51 students from Years 6 to 12, two former students and 10 staff slept outside in cardboard boxes and participated in a program designed to encourage conversation and action. There was a campfire, night-golf and structured discussions about homelessness. The team also prepared 850 sandwiches from food donations for Eat Up Australia to distribute to children who attend school without lunch and others in need. Year 7 student Patrick said it was "really important to appreciate what we have in our life and to help other people that aren't as lucky as myself". "To spend a night sleeping out in the cold for one night, really makes me understand what it would be like to be homeless and cold," he said.
IN BRIEF Armed men strike Four men stole a mobile phone at gunpoint in Springvale. Police are investigating the armed robbery, which occurred on View Road just after 9.30pm on Tuesday 19 June. They've been told that four men approached the victim and demanded their belongings. The men then produced a firearm. Police said they stole a mobile phone and fled on foot, no one was physically injured during the incident and the investigation was ongoing.
Draining wait to end
Students warm up by the fire. "It makes me want to raise as much money as I can." Past student Mitchell remains involved. "Whilst it can be cold and uncomfortable, the winter sleep-out is an enjoyable event where students and staff come together to support a great cause," he said. "For us, it is just one night but for homeless people this is everyday life."

Hallam and Hampton Park residents can have their say on "unsightly and underutilised" land. A Liberal Nationals State Government would run an official community survey about the Hallam Drainage site, adjacent to the Hallam Main Drain and Hallam Linear Park. The Liberal Party candidates for Narre Warren South and Narre Warren North, Susan Serey and Vikki Fitzgerald, said the land was originally designated for a golf course but had gone unused for 50 years. They said it was degraded and subject to flooding. A cycling or walking track, sports grounds and parkland have been other options touted for the site, but Ms Serey and Ms Fitzgerald said no project had come to fruition. "Our region has a lot to be proud of and this survey will help our community become an even better place to live," Ms Fitzgerald said. The Journal contacted the State Government for comment but did not receive a response before deadline.

PROPERTY NEWS
DENSITY MOVE WRONG: HIA THE STATE Opposition’s announcement that it will re-introduce residential planning controls that restrict low density, low impact redevelopment if elected in November, would be a backwards step for housing in Victoria, according to HIA’s Victorian executive director Fiona Nield. The Opposition has announced if elected in November, it will within 100 days reintroduce the two dwelling per-lot limit in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone, as well as re-introducing the discretionary nine metre height limit in the General Residential Zone. The height limit is currently 11 metres with a three storey cap. “It is important that planning policy, particularly as it relates to the residential development industry, is always looking
SEJ
forward seeking innovative ways to house a growing population with the ability to provider a diverse range of housing stock,” Ms Nield said. “This announcement is likely to create further uncertainty for both industry and the community in the coming months and may ultimately inhibit the building of homes for many first home buyers and those seeking to downsize and stay within their own community - particularly on their own block of land. We need certainty regarding planning controls year on year to be able to continue providing Victoria’s much needed new housing stock and meet the challenges that come with such strong population growth in this state. “Announcements such as these create doubt for home owners.” ● T 8P_

St John's Regional College has been the first choice for Catholic secondary education in Dandenong for 60 years. The safe, encouraging and challenging environment allows students to grow and succeed spiritually, academically and emotionally. Learning and co-curricular programs are designed to ensure the highest possible quality of learning experience and a sense of belonging. St John's aims to provide an educational program which develops the whole person - the spiritual, social and physical as well as the academic. From the STEP program in year seven, which focuses on transitioning students from primary to secondary school, through to the wide range of VCE and VET subjects, VCAL and enrichment programs, all students are able to find their place at St John's. The college has dynamic and growing programs in the arts and sports, as well as recreation and hospitality. At St John's, students and their learning outcomes are at the heart of the college. Striving to design programs which ensure that learning is visible to students, the college provides learning intentions and success criteria for each unit of work. Attempting to guide students to seek their own learning paths and draw on their own strengths, St Johns recognises the individual and personalised learning, seeking to provide

St John's aims to establish learning environments where errors are accepted and seen as opportunities for learning. By maximising feedback to students, the school endeavours to challenge and engage all students. Overall, the college's ultimate aim is to ensure that the learning experiences at St John's prepares students to be active and global citizens. What a Guy he is! By Casey Neill "Always be kind" was Guy Sebastian’s top advice to Dandenong Primary students. The chart-topping singer popped into the school on Monday 18 June ahead of two shows at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong. “What’s the most important thing in the world?” he asked before leaving. “Kindness,” the students responded with gusto, clearly taking the tip on board. He said they shouldn’t react to someone being mean by being mean in return, likening that response to trying to put out a fire with fire. “People are people. Everyone’s the same,” he said. “Everyone deserves the same love.” Guy started his visit by surprising a Grade 6 class, before school captains Rida and Hamza escorted him to the school hall. “It’s very different, in a good way,” Rida said. She said her favourite Guy Sebastian song was Like a Drum, and he later performed an acoustic rendition of the track along with Battle scars and Like it like that. Hamza said he was nervous about meeting Guy, and very surprised to see him at the school. “I’m happy to meet him,” he said. Students in the packed hall asked question after question to an obliging Guy. He answered each one with a witty retort and plenty of warmth. He told them his favourite colour was green, his favourite performance was his appearance on US talk show David Letterman, and that even simple, day-to-day sounds could set his song-writing creativity in motion. Students asked him how he learnt to sing and he explained that he taught himself by listening to the radio and trying to mimic his favourite artists.
Guy Sebastian signs autographs and poses for selfies.
IN BRIEF Signed on for refugee support Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea joined mayors from across the globe to mark World Refugee Day. On Wednesday 20 June, he was among the first 100 mayors to sign a joint statement calling for more communities to welcome refugees. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is running the international #WithRefugees campaign. Cr Chea said the City of Greater Dandenong was the most culturally diverse community in Australia. "More than half of our residents were born overseas," he said. "They come from 157 different birthplaces, and many have origins in parts of the world with recent histories of conflict, violence and displacement. "There are nearly 2000 people seeking asylum who are living in Greater Dandenong. "We are a proud refugee Welcome Zone and open our arms to all. "Nobody chooses to be a refugee, but we can all extend a welcoming hand to make sure these people experience the human rights they deserve." Visit www.unrefugees.org.au for more information about the #WithRefugees campaign.
Energy audit saves dollars
Guy performs in the packed school hall. “I used to do that for eight hours,” he said. Guy posed for dozens of selfies and signed countless autographs for students, staff and
parents before his whirlwind school visit came to an end. https://youtu.be/G3Mk9monYi4
An energy audit could help a Dandenong South business to save $12,000 a year. Bottle cap manufacturer Caps and Closures identified the potential savings through an energy assessment grant from the State Government's Boosting Business Productivity Program. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said Caps and Closures was now working with an experienced energy consultant to further identify potential energy efficiency improvements, review pricing tariffs, and find suitable renewable energy options. The Energy Assessment Grants are open to businesses spending more than $20,000 a year on energy. Call 1300 363 744 or email grants.enquiries@sustainability.vic.gov.au for more.

Divvied up
Reading rewarded
Two Keysborough shoppers are more than $200,000 richer following a division one TattsLotto win. The syndicate entry was among 10 winners of the top prize in the Saturday 16 June draw. It also won division three 12 times and division four 15 times, taking the prize for each syndicate member to $213,435.76. The winners bought their ticket from Lucky Corner Lotto in Keysborough. Owner Martin Najdek said he was thrilled to have sold another division one-winning entry. "It's fantastic, I can't stop smiling," he said. "We sold a $5 million Oz Lotto winning entry in 2016 and another TattsLotto winning entry in 2012, so selling three division onewinning entries in five years is pretty good. "This store syndicate has only been running for about five or six weeks with our regular customers so it is great they have had a win already. "We've told a few people we've sold a winning entry and we hope we can sell another one soon." The six winning numbers were 26, 8, 22, 45, 2 and 12, and the supplementary numbers were 1 and 38.
Dandenong North Primary students received a reward for reading. The school welcomed children's author Michael Panckridge on Friday 15 June to recognise that it topped the registrations for the 2017 Greater Dandenong Libraries Summer Reading Club. Panckridge was an ambassador for the reading challenge and helped to launch last year's club at Springvale Library. The 2017 theme was Game on! which aligned with Panckridge's two passions of writing and sport. He shared his enthusiasm for books and helped to inspire students to prepare for the 2018 Summer Reading Club.

LETTERS Veteran thankful for kindness I tripped and fell because of the uneven footpath opposite the KFC at the intersection of Princes Highway and Clow Street at about 12.30pm on Wednesday 20 June 2018. As a result I damaged my left wrist, bruised my left knee, and fell on the deck with my nose which was bleeding profusely and along comes a Good Samaritan and keeps giving me tissues to stop the bleeding. I think her name was Christine who said she would send a photo of the place to the council on my behalf, what a wonderful lady? God bless you my dear. A number of other people also came to my
assistance including the ambulance that was nearby. Two young ladies took my pulse and blood pressure and the usual test to see if I was fit to drive. So very professional and charming. Thereafter, I drove straight to my doctor’s clinic who attended to me. Right now I feel sore all over my left side, very sore left wrist, bruised knee and a nose like a beetroot, blocked and some difficulty breathing. With so much violence around reported in the media, of people being bashed and no one coming to their aid, how refreshing to see so many people come to my aid, both men and
women, one who literally gave me a helping hand to lift me from where I had fallen. It is so nice to see that the milk of human kindness still flows in our violent society, and long may it continue. I want to say thank you to all of them. This is a good news story. I am a veteran of World War II in my nineties. This is the second time uneven footpaths have floored me. The first was at Dandenong Plaza on 6 June 2013, reported by Star News Group on 20 June 2013. Fred Menzies, Dandenong North.
The story following Fred's previous fall back in 2013.

Oneata’s slice of history By Hayley Wildes Oneata Schwalger had one goal in mind. And anyone that has ever seen her step on a rugby field knows that she won't take a backwards step when she has her sights set on achieving something. Last week, Oneata's dream of signing with a team for the inaugural National Rugby League Women's Premiership competition was realised. Now officially a member of the St George Illawarra Dragons, Oneata - who plays locally for South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club is still coming to terms with the achievement. "That was the goal. I'm really stoked and still sort of crying every day, it comes in waves," she said. "Until I'm up there with the girls, I don't think it will truly sink in." Oneata has played rugby union at the highest level, both nationally and internationally, and making the switch to rugby league has clearly paid dividends. She had been on the radar of scouts for some time, but her play at the Women's National Rugby League Championships on the Gold Coast last month solidified her as a sure thing to be signed. The competition, which will see the Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Sydney
Roosters and St George field teams, kicks off in early September with all games to be played as curtain-raisers to NRL finals games. All teams will play each other once, before the top two teams face off in a grand final played before the NRL Grand Final in Sydney on 30 September. "I think on that day, it's going to blow up for women's rugby league in Australia, it really will. This is just the start and it's really exciting," Oneata said. The 32-year-old, mother of two will be relocating to Wollongong for eight weeks to ensure she can attend all trainings and get the most out of herself. Whilst she admits it will be hard to leave her kids, she is looking forward to the experience. "I'll be up there for the eight weeks. I went to Wollongong for the Jillaroos camp last year and it was stunning, so I'm not going to be complaining. Outside of work and training, I'll just be on the beach," she said with a laugh. Another aspect that makes the achievement even more incredible is the fact that Oneata is the only Victorian to be signed by any team. With her ruthless style of play and nonstop engine that powers her through countless packs, there is no doubt that Oneata Schwalger will do Victoria and the South East proud every time she steps on the field.

Bucks reset for another tilt - with plenty of depth, too By Nick Creely There will be very few sides in the Dandenong District Cricket Association that boast the depth that Buckley Ridges have in the 2018/19 season. The Bucks are well known for recruiting some high-profile international and local stars such as Luke Fletcher, Steven Mullaney, David Hussey (Twenty20) as well as Greg Todd and Susa Pradeep, and they've once again brought some elite talent to the club. In what looms as an exciting and tough eight-team Turf 1 grade, the Bucks have brought in two marquee signings in David White and Chanaka Silva, as well as nine other players to bolster its ranks. White, 27, is an opening batsman and pace bowler who represented both South Africa A and the South African Under 19s side, as well as being part of the South Africa Academy. He has scored seven first class centuries for Eastern Province - the highest being 160 against Western Province in 2015/16, and the latest in February 2018 when he collected 157 against Gauteng in Port Elizabeth. In the two Under 19 World Cup matches that he played he scored 77 against India and 72 against New Zealand. In 2015, he scored 137 on tour with South Africa A against Sri Lanka A at Dambulla. David, who did some tough soul-searching, recently decided to end his professional career to focus on his studies, as well as travel to Australia to play some cricket. The other big name to be welcomed to the Buckley fold is Chanka Silva, a 28-year-old legspinner who has played first-class cricket in Sri Lanka, but more recently has dominated for Moonee Valley in the Victorian Turf Cricket Assocation (VTCA). Last season, Chanaka played 13 matches for MVCC and notched an eye-catching double scoring 492 runs at an average of 37.85 (highest
Gayantha Wijethilake, pictured here bowling for North Dandenong last season, has joined Buckley Ridges. 176713 score of 142 versus Sydenham/Hillside) while snaring 41 wickets at a remarkable average of 12.27. He bowled 194 overs, wheeling down 47 maidens while conceding 503 runs. Others to commit to the club for the 2018/19 season are 25-year-old South African all-rounder Rhett Bridgens, Gayantha Wijethilake from North Dandenong, Yahas Alwis who played two first-class games for Nondescripts CC in Colombo in 2016/17, as well as Rob Peat, a gifted all-rounder who captains
Marehay CC in England and played a key role for DDCA club St Mary's gaining promotion from Turf 2 to Turf 1 with 43 wickets and 369 runs in 2016/17. There will also be at least two other Englishman to join the club, with Scott Snaylam and a promising youngster, Kieran Vis, both from the Northern CC near Liverpool. Also joining from the neighbouring West Gippsland competition is Tooradin trio Shane Somers, Dan Hunt and his brother Brendan.

Buckley Ridges president, Sonny De Silva, announced the new additions at the annual general meeting at the clubrooms in Pultney Street on Friday 15 June, stressing that the club remained committed to ensuring young talent from within Buckley's existing pool got a fair crack at playing top flight turf in the new, tougher DDCA turf structure, with the new players adding to depth that was missing last season.
Inline hockey returns to Dandenong after years away By Hayley Wildes After years in the wilderness, inline hockey is set to return to the region. In exciting news for the area, Dandenong Inline Hockey League has partnered with Skate Victoria to bring inline hockey back to the fore. The league is set to kick off in early August, with all games to be played at 'The Shed' on Bennet Street in Dandenong and anyone welcome to join. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
No experience is necessary, just a willingness to get involved, learn and enjoy the sport. For those that aren't familiar with inline hockey, the aim of the game is simple; score more points than the opposition. But what makes inline hockey so entertaining is the speed and excitement of the sport for both players and spectators. With five players on each team in the rink (including one goalie) at any one time, there is plenty of space and because of that, free-flow-
ing play more often than not eventuates. The Dandenong Inline Hockey League is hosting a scrimmage day on Sunday 1 July, with the opportunity for those interested to try their hand at the sport. For those wanting to learn the basics of skating, puck handling, or both, the scrimmage day will be a great chance for everyone to participate at their own pace. In addition to the scrimmage day, on 15 and 22 July - from 12.30 to 4pm - the league will be holding draft tryout days in readiness for the
drafting of players to establish the make-up of teams in the competition. The tryouts will include a mixture of drills - skating and puck handling - before finishing with a scrimmage. To participate in the league, players must attend at least one of the two try out days. A tough night for Rangers By Hayley Wildes In a disappointing Saturday night SEABL double-header at Dandenong Stadium, the Rangers men and women both suffered defeats at the hands of Nunawading. For the women, taking on the secondplaced Spectres was always going to be a tough task, and they couldn’t stay with Nunawading down the stretch in a back and forth game, falling 73-62. The Rangers struggled to get their offence flowing throughout the game and shooting just 21 per cent (7/32) from deep made it difficult to make inroads as the game went on. The Spectres won each quarter and had an answer for every Rangers challenge. Tess Madgen (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) led the way for the Rangers, but just 11 bench points, compared to 23 from Nunawading was a major factor in the game. Tayla Roberts contributed 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists to the Rangers cause, but it was Hanna Zavecz’s 18 points off the bench and Izzy Chilcott’s 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists that led the Spectres home. The Rangers own a 9-5 record and with just one win separating fourth to ninth, every game matters as we head towards the business end of the regular season. The men got off to a flying start against the impressive Nunawading outfit, jumping out to a 27-16 lead at the first break. The Rangers were on fire from deep, hitting five triples, including three from Lucas Barker who had 10 points to his name in the opening stanza. Nunawading started to turn the tide in the second quarter, trimming Dandenong’s lead to six points at the main break. The Spectres made their move in the third quarter, outscoring Dandenong 25-12 to take control of the game. The Rangers’ offence stalled as the visitors lifted their defensive
Joshua Oswald contributed nine points in Dandenong’s loss to Nunawading. 166958 intensity and a 16-4 run to end the quarter had Nunawading possessing all the momentum heading into the final period. A Lucas Barker bucket with 42 seconds remaining had the Rangers only two points adrift, but some clutch free throws ensured Nunawading kept Dandenong at bay to seal a 83-77 win.

Lucas Barker (17 points, 5 steals) was involved in everything as he so often is, while big men Rhys Vague (16 points, 5 rebounds) and Tim Lang (8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks) were crucial. The Rangers’ 8-6 record has them firmly entrenched in the battle for a top four finish, and
just like the women’s competition, only one win separates fourth to ninth and teams can ill afford to drop games. Round 12 sees both teams head to Tasmania to take on Hobart on Friday night, and then on Saturday night the men face North West Tasmania and the women take on Launceston.
Five wins on the trot for Rampant Rays By Hayley Wildes In Round 10 TAC Cup action, the Dandenong Stingrays won their fifth game in a row and sit two games clear on top of the ladder after a comprehensive win over the Greater Western Victorian Rebels. It was a dominant performance by the Stingrays, who were led by Bailey Schmidt and Stephen Cumming (four goals each), eventually running out big winners 15.16 (106) to 7.5 (47). Rowville claimed a crucial win over Blackburn in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League. With both teams fighting it out for the final top four spot on the ladder, Rowville got off to a hot start and held off the home side, 10.8 (68) to 7.8 (50), despite not kicking a goal in the final term. Noble Park was overrun by the Roos at East Ringwood, falling 14.10 (94) to 9.9 (63). The Bulls had Hudson Thomas (five goals) stand up in the forward line, while Kyle Martin was
impressive in the loss. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Keysborough returned to the winners list with a massive 20.14 (134) to 8.8 (56) away win over Mount Waverley. Chris Bryan starred with eight goals for the Burras. The Doveton Eagles obliterated Clayton, 25.11 (161) to 6.5 (41), as Darren Sheen ran riot with seven goals. In Division 3, Springvale Districts claimed a hard-fought win over Endeavour Hills, 6.8 (44) to 3.8 (26). Jack Allender and Steven Comino were sublime for Springvale Districts, while Ben Holland and Ben Swift battled hard for the Falcons. An inaccurate Hampton Park claimed a win over Ashwood, 5.14 (44) to 5.9 (39). Taylor Rainey and Luke Nunan dominated for the Redbacks. Hallam will rue its missed opportunities, falling to Heatherton 8.8 (56) to 7.13 (55), in a thriller. Rory McIvor played inspired footy for
the Hawks, but it wasn’t quite enough. In Division 4, Lyndale was far too strong for Dandenong, claiming a 14.8 (92) to 6.4 (40) win. Trent Day (five goals) and Jayden MacDonald were sublime for the Pumas, while James Davis and Anthony Gaetano were valiant for the Redlegs. Carrum Patterson Lakes took care of business against Sandown, storming to a big away win 17.16 (118) to 5.7 (37). Mitchell Davis was huge for Carrum Patterson Lakes and Michael Newsom was best for the Cobras. Meanwhile, in Division 2 of the VAFA, St John’s fell heartbreakingly short of the Old Paradians. St John’s was leading by 15 points at halftime, but the Old Paradians got over the line in a thriller, 10.8 (68) to 9.10 (64). Daniel Cattolico and Glenn Costas almost got their team over line with impressive showings for St John’s.

makes quite a pretty picture. You can save the planet and look good too. It matters not that the really worthy exterior elements are more about achieving a fuel-saving aerodynamic shape than wanting to run with the cool kids. It is eye-catching, in a good way, and aside from the poor rear visibility, there is nothing to test the complaints department. The interior is much more demure than I was expecting. Aside from the energy-use instrumentation that shares space with the speedometer and the Eco climate change option, there is little to separate the Ioniq, visually at least, from a petrol guzzler. That could be a good thing, I suppose, but a little bit of flash design wouldn’t hurt either. The materials themselves are recycled or sustainably sourced and look and feel, for the most part, of approving quality. Lodgings are comfortable, both front and back, with seating comfortable without stretching to plush. The phone charging plate at the bottom of the centre stack is a useful touch although storage could be a tad better - a solitary front cup holder and shallow door pockets feels wanting. Even the environmentally-conscious have stuff. The sloping roof which may hinder taller passengers has no problems accommodating the kids. Two is a better number than three though as the centre seat is a touch hard. There are two IsoFix points should you have littlies. My girls loved the sunroof and the idea of travelling in a car powered in much the same way as their battery-operated toys - it’s a stretch, but parents embellish the truth, okay? - but did bemoan the lack of a USB point in the back. Surprisingly, the boot is practical, offering up 456-litres with the 60:40 rear seat in position. That will do you a fair grocery shop even
Hyundai’s Ioniq range has the charge to become an electrical icon. with the school bags chucked in haphazardly and let’s not forget there is a full-sized spare in there too. An 8.0-inch split colour touchscreen is as adept as giving you the energy breakdown as it is in providing reliable directions. Graphic quality is great, as is connectivity, with the up-to-date traffic information saving valuable gridlock time too. The warnings of “children crossing ahead”, were alarming at first in the pitch dark but quickly became a slight annoyance along, as did the over-sensitive lane-keeping assist. There is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if you are unable to be parted from the comforts of your smartphone screen and a decent eightspeaker stereo to listen to those tunes. So the Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine capable of 77kW of power and 147Nm of torque and a 32kW electric motor taking that output to 103kW and 265Nm.
HYUNDAI IONIQ PREMIUM PRICING AND SPECIFICATIONS: Price: TBA Powered by: 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol and electric motor Petrol output: 77kW at 5700rpm and 147Nm at 4000rpm. Electric motor: 33kW/170Nm. Total system: 104kW and 265Nm Transmission: Six-speed dual-clutch auto Fuel: 3.2L/100km (Combined) Warranty: 5 years unlimited kilometres Safety Rating: No ANCAP rating yet This is no speed demon of course but there is more than enough to get you around the city and along the open road too. Hyundai have opted for a six-speed dualclutch transmission rather than a CVT. It is an efficient performer, helped not even a smidgen by almost incongruous paddle shifters.
