Wandin Yallock Primary School students Alastair, Anthony, Oliver and Josh, next to where the grafter gum trees were planted, before being ripped out.
Kids ripped off Wandin Yallock Primary School students and staff have been left upset over the removal of many of its plants, which were ripped out and taken over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. Since the start of the school year, Grade 6 students at the school had made an effort to plany many trees so they could leave a positive legacy for others to enjoy and follow. As many as 100 plants had been part of the project, which had been planted throughout the grounds.
Now, the removal has angered many and the school has put out a plea for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to contact Lilydale Police on (03) 9739 2300. Teacher aid Katherine Byatt said the students were devastated to find out that many of the plants had been ripped out during the long weekend. "The boys have been working on this for quite some time ... in summer they started digging when it was like concrete, so it took them ages to dig the holes," she said. "We were given around 100 plants from Kuranga native nursery and two of them were
really special gum trees that were specially grafted ... they are the ones which are most noticeably missing." Ms Byatt said that, because the students were leaving next year, the plants and garden area had profound meaning to the students, who could have returned in later years and seen their growth. "Because they are all heading off to secondary school next year, this could have been something they could leave and revisit later," she said."They're calling it the peaceful garden and planned to build up a hedge, have a sitting area where they could read or talk ... this
would have been their legacy." The two grafted gum trees, some large box hedge plants and some smaller box hedge plants were all dug up and taken. Oliver, a Grade 6 student at the school, shared his disappointment. "It's pretty sad ... it would have been nice to have come back in a few years and see it," he said. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity at Wandin Yallock Primary School over the Queens' Birthday long weekend (June 9-11) is urged to contact Lilydale Police on (03) 9739 2300.

Care Shop becoming ‘dumping ground’ By Peter Douglas

YOU’RE MORE SUITED THAN YOU MIGHT THINK
Monbulk Care Network administrator Bev Beazley said volunteers are frustrated over high levels of rubbish dumping at the organisation's Care Shop. In recent months, Ms Beazley said it had become a weekly occurrence where the shop had to use its valuable funds to pay for the removal of unusable, damaged items. Items are being either delivered in an unsellable condition or are being left out overnight in the rain, causing irreparable damage to the items. Ms Beazley described the practice as placing a major strain on the MCN and the great work they do for the community. "It's disappointing; we feel that a lot of people are either taking advantage of the service, or they want to do good for their community but are actually making things worse," she said. "It's become a major problem for us. "All our profits go back to the community. So when we need to pay to have things
removed - it is actually taking away from the community." MCN uses volunteers to staff the Care Shop, where good quality second-hand items are sold. The money raised assists the provision of welfare assistance to people in the Monbulk area. This includes the families of students at local schools; as well as providing Christmas Hampers to in-need people in Monbulk. Ms Beazley said if people wish to donate larger items, such as furniture, they must ring ahead. *When donating, please ensure all items are clean and in a good saleable condition. Please also donate responsibly by phoning ahead to confirm store opening times - this gives you the opportunity to check that the type of donations are suitable and it also prevents the store being used as a 'dumping ground'. Contact the MCN beforehand on (03) 9756 7800.

Apology sought for railway’s victims Some in positions of power at Puffing Billy Railway and other Victorian railway groups have protected reputations at the expense of sexual abuse victims, according to Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass. Tabling her 'Investigation into child sex offender Robert Whitehead's involvement with Puffing Billy and other railway bodies', in the Victorian Parliament on 25 June, Ms Glass described the failures of people in authority as 'monumental'. The report centres on Robert Whitehead, a convicted sex offender who was a volunteer at Puffing Billy from 1961 until 1990. Whitehead died in prison in 2015. He was convicted of sexually abusing six boys. Whitehead was first convicted of a child sex offence in 1959; though he returned to his job on the Victorian Government railway after being released from jail in 1960. "Whitehead was a life-long offender whose abuse was facilitated by the wilful blindness, indifference or ineptitude of a succession of organisations from Victorian Railways to Puffing Billy," Ms Glass said. "The actions, or inaction of people in po-
sitions of authority, who should have known better, is inexcusable."We do not know, and will never know, how many children Whitehead abused." Ms Glass said through Whitehead's 30-year involvement with Puffing Billy, he had unrestricted access to children. She said that some members of the Puffing Billy Board were aware of allegations that he was abusing children. "In 1985, members of the board knew that Whitehead was under police investigation for child sexual offences, yet he was not removed until 1991," Ms Glass said. "They failed to act on complaints, or even record contacts; in one notable case punishing the 17-year-old victim by banning him from Puffing Billy." Ms Glass made nine recommendations in total, all of which have been accepted by the Victorian Government, including an official apology to the victims. Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, confirmed "the Victorian Government accepts the report's recommendations in full" and said they have accepted the resignation of all members of Emerald Tourist Railway Board, including long-time Puffing Billy
CEO John Robinson. "It should never have happened and thanks to this report, and the actions we will take, it never will again," Mr Eren said. He added that an independent review into the government and management of Puffing Billy will be conducted. Mr Eren said the victims will be supported through a dedicated 'Centre Against Sexual Assault Line' as part of the recommendations handed down. "The Government intends to issue a formal public apology to all victims of these heinous crimes ... this apology will occur once we have met and apologised to the victims in person," he said. Meanwhile, in response to the report, Puffing Billy issued a media release, stating they are "deeply sorry that people in positions of authority acted to protect their organisations' own reputations at the expense of victims, that they failed to act on complaints, and that victims were not encouraged to come forward," the response from Puffing Billy said. "Our clear imperative is to foster a safe and caring culture with awareness and knowledge at all levels of our organisation from the Board through to our volunteers and employees."

More than best friends As humans, we all need comfort and companionship. People with disabilities face a range of challenges in their lives and these challenges can make comfort and companionship more difficult to achieve. Over the years, it has been well documented and recognised that assistance dogs (formally known as guide dogs) have filled the void in this area. The benefits to people with disabilities have been enormous. However, the use of assistance dogs and where they can go seems to be unclear to some in our community. Assistance dogs are permitted to go into any business including cafes and restaurants, on public transport or anywhere their owner

They are well trained to perform specific tasks, including opening and closing drawers and cupboards, retrieve dropped items, alert bark if their owner is in danger and guiding blind and visually impaired people to avoid obstacles, stopping at curbs and steps and negotiating traffic. Less tangible attributes include assist with the development and improvement of motor skills, provide greater freedom and independence, reduce anxiety, improve self-esteem and confidence and give love and companionship. Assistance dogs play a vital role in society and it is incumbent upon us all to act with compassion, and knowledge of the law, when a person with an assistance dog is out in the pubic arena.
Counting down to Kokoda By Derek Schlennstedt In three weeks, 13 students from Emerald Secondary School will embark on an unforgettable journey to Papua New Guinea, where they will spend eight days walking the Kokoda track. For the past six months, the students and three staff members have been vigorously training for the eight-day trek. As well as training their bodies, the students have also been training their minds and regularly meet with Emerald RSL to learn the importance of the trail and its significance in Australia's Military history. Emerald Secondary staff member, Shane Closter, is also embarking on the trip and said that it is great to see the growth of the students, during and after the trip. "The personal growth that comes from
them doing this is fantastic," he said. "Not only the awareness of how lucky they are to live where we are and to see a third world country and how different the facilities and services are ... they come back with that social awareness as well as developing leadership skills." The Kokoda Tour is offered to the school as part of a half-sponsorship arrangement with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards every second year, which halves the financial outlay for the students. In return, students are expected to complete the challenges of one of the Duke of Edinburgh levels - Bronze, Silver or Gold. And meet those challenges is exactly what the students hope to do. Our $55m in unpaid fines By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges fine dodgers owe the Victorian Government more than $55 million in unpaid Sheriff's Office fines. Victorian Sheriff Warwick Knight released the figures on 14 June which revealed that the state-wide number of infringements issued in 2016-17 had dropped by almost 13 per cent. Though, out of 79 municipalities, the Yarra Ranges ranked 13th in Victoria for outstanding fines. Data showed that 13,401 people in the Yarra Ranges area racked up 147,483 fines between the 2016-17 financial year, with each debtor owing $4209. The total value of outstanding warrants across Victoria in 2016-17 was $2 billion, with the top three local government areas for outstanding debt including the City of Casey, Hume City Council, and Frankston City Council. Victorian Sheriff Warwick Knight urged people to deal with their infringements early to avoid extra penalties and a possible warrant. "It is important to deal with your fines as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and the infringement becoming a warrant," Sheriff Knight said. "People who receive a fine can request an internal review, nominate a driver, apply for a payment plan or elect to have the matter heard by the court, and we encourage them to come and speak to us about their options." Launched in July 2017, the Victorian Government introduced options that cater to vulnerable people, including a Work and Devel-

The scheme allows eligible people who are experiencing financial hardship, mental illness, addiction, or homelessness to reduce their fine debt by undertaking volunteer work, educational, vocational and life skills courses, medical and mental health treatment or counselling and mentoring activities to address their underlying circumstances. A new Family Violence Scheme also ensures that victim survivors of family violence are no longer unfairly liable for fines incurred by perpetrators. Anyone with concerns about their outstanding fines should call 1300 743 743 and speak to a staff member about their options. Individuals can pay their outstanding fines at the www.fines.vic.gov.au website.
An increase in this year's sexual offences statistics for the Yarra Ranges has prompted the Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS) to call on salon professionals to help respond to the increase. Salon professionals in the Healesville and Eastern Metropolitan region are being offered voluntary training and resources to help them safely recognise the signs of family violence and refer women who need support. EDVOS has developed the HaiR-3R's (Recognise, Respond and Refer) program - an innovative new approach that provides early intervention, specifically for salon professionals, to support women who may be facing violence or controlling behaviour at home. EDVOS Executive director, Jenny Jackson, said that for this year, the program has trained 150 hairdressers and salon professionals. "We've trained approximately 150 hairdressers and salon professional this year and the feedback is overwhelming and really positive," she said. "The HaiR-3R's program provides salon professionals with the knowledge, skills and
expertise to engage in conversations that challenge gender stereotypes. "It will enable them to share experiences and recognise the sometimes-subtle signs of family violence." Ms Jackson said that the program focuses on salon profession specifically as 'women establish relationships and confide in their salon professionals'. Though, Ms Jackson said it was important to note that they weren't being trained to become councillors but rather being given the skills to identify and provide support, often by referral. EDVOS is collaborating with national and local providers including Box Hill TAFE, Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC) and Hair & Beauty Industry Association (HBIA) in delivering the HaiR-3R's project to salon professionals in Melbourne's eastern metropolitan region. The free training workshops are open to all salon professionals and salons and in the Healesville area - please contact Mandy Hudson on mandyh@edvos.org.au or (03) 9259 4282 for more information.

Space for play, learning Students in Ferny Creek now have access to upgraded sporting facilities and sheltered play space, thanks to the Victorian Government. Monbulk MP James Merlino on Friday 15 June visited the Ferny Creek Primary School to open the new roof for the netball court as part of a $285,000 upgrade. Previously, the school had limited covered space, which made playing outdoor sport a challenge in poor weather. The new roof will create additional outdoor space and shelter for students, so they can stay active outdoors during hot and wet weather. New lights, storage space and reversible netball and basketball poles will installed in the next month, as part of the upgrades. Mr Merlino said it was a fantastic development for the school. "This new room will allow students at Ferny Creek Primary School to enjoy playing netball, basketball and other activities, come rain, hail or shine," he said. "By making sure students have access to the best sporting facilities, we can increase the participation of kids staying active - making students happier, healthier and more resilient." Meanwhile, Mr Merlino also toured the construction site to view the $7.88 million update to The Basin Primary School. Next term, students and staff will have access to new classrooms and administration spaces, alongside a new office, reception and sickbay. Students will also enjoy sports and recreation in a multi-purpose gymnasium, with a competition-grade basketball and netball court. The upgrade includes works at the Basin Community House, with a new staff room, computer room, art room, toilet and kitchen the whole community can use. The Basin Primary School has been part of the local community for over 100 years, and has grown from a one-teacher rural school to its current enrolment of 570 students this year. "We're working to make sure that every family, no matter where they live in our state, has access to a great government school," Mr Merlino said.

LETTERS We have a voice for refugees, too The sentiment and outrage expressed in Pauline Hosking's letter 'We all have a voice on trade' ('Mail', 12 June) are laudable in reminding us that we all have a voice on trade. In regard to the suffering of innocent animals which die in their thousands in the live export trade: just last Friday 15 June, yet another man, a young Iranian, died in detention on Nauru after an apparent suicide - the 12th young man to die under our system of incarceration. In total, about 1600 people are being held in two camps, on Manus and Nauru. Just as our government should be held re-
sponsible for the trafficking of innocent animals, so, too, should they be held responsible for the misery and deaths in our 'out-of-sight, out-of-mind' detention camps. Just as pain, suffering, stress and death are part of the inhumane live sheep trade, the same has been endured by those on Manus and Nauru, whose only crime was to seek asylum from war torn or oppressive regimes. Just as the sheep trade is a reflection on our society's morals and values, so, too, is our treatment of those who have sought our protection. Not only should our governments be held responsible, but also the media and community at large which ignore the treatment, suf-
fering and deaths on Manus and Nauru. Surely, a mockery of our so called Christian and Australian values. Just as we reflect on the cruelty inflicted on innocent animals for profit, we should also reflect on the innocent humans caught up as victims in an unedifying political game and the huge profit-making by private companies: Yes, blood money! Just as Pauline Hosking reminds us that it takes only a few minutes to email a local MP to protest about the sheep, the same goes in letting our government know your concerns about the treatment of asylum seekers. Maria Millers, Emerald
More funds, less pitch needed James Merlino, Monbulk MLA, as part of your pitch for re-election in 2014 you committed $2 million to fix Belgrave-Monbulk Road. Four years on and the most dangerous section between Micawber Tavern and Kallista has had another patchwork quilt repair. This will last six to 12 months before it breaks up and collapses on the edges of the repairs, as has occurred many times previously. The only way to fix this is to spend the money and remake the road properly instead of piecemeal repairs. Dennis Yeats, Tecoma

"VIEW's continued mission to make property buying more intuitive, easier to understand and informative will only be intensified with Toby joining the team." Reflecting on his appointment, Mr Balazs said he was honoured and excited to have been selected to lead this rapidly evolving company "VIEW has a great culture, an increasingly broad capability in the market and a winning strategy that has enabled VIEW to grow strongly. Growing VIEW from the third-largest player is a challenge I accept with both confidence and determination," he said. "I am committed to continuing VIEW's momentum based on a differentiated offering, which is resonating strongly in the market by offering lower fees for real estate agents to list property, and importantly, delivering consumers an exceptional level of real estate industry information on a platform that is free and easy to use," Mr Balazs said.
Mr Balazs joins VIEW as it continues to roll out the stimulating rebrand and new site experience. The next round of transformations to be released in Spring 2018 are focused on providing richer search metrics and making property research easier and more informative. property developers. In 2018, VIEW maintains a nimble and disruptive culture designed to keep pace with a rapidly changing real estate market. In August 2017, the company rebranded to view. com.au to better reflect its evolving values and goals - namely that every single home buyer is entitled access to free property data. ENTERTAINMENT
Just let them eat cake By Derek Schlennstedt Cakes, cocktails and castles. That's what's on offer these school holidays at Mary Eats Cake in Montrose, which is holding a fairytale-themed high tea just in time for the school holidays. A special treat for the little princes and princesses in your life, the themed high tea includes a range of activities and delightfully themed food to keep your little ones entertained. Sarah De Witt, owner at Mary Eats Cake, Montrose, invited parents to bring their kids along. "It was about putting on a special event, for the communities out this way," Ms De Witt said.
"It's a fairytale-themed high tea for the first week of the school holidays. "There's a big buffet of high tea, cupcakes, cookies, popcorn ... there's also a live show fomr a local fairy who will be doing a magic show, and a craft area with facepainting." "It's just a really nice time and offers all the things that your kids can enjoy for a special occasion." There will be plenty of sweet and savoury nibbles for parents, too, including the opportunity to have some quiet tea away from all the fairytale excitement Though, Ms De Witt said parents were quite welcome to dress up too. For more information visit https://www. maryeatscake.com.au/event/
Come and join in with the fun and excitement.
Tune in to the radiothon By Peter Douglas

Popular non-profit, grassroots radio station Yarra Valley FM is holding a Radiothon to help boost membership and shore up its future. From 30 June to 8 July, the station's first ever Radiothon will encourage local listeners to tune in so more people can provide input into the station. Yarra Valley FM relies purely on sponsorship, donation and membership. Community Engagement Organiser for Yarra Valley FM, Greg Carrick, said that without membership and support, the service wouldn't exist. "Community radio goes way beyond playing bland music or emulating commercial radio; we are to be hooked into the heart of our
community," Mr Carrick said. "We have many roles to play in the community; we are licensed to give an on-air platform for local community groups, to promote local and Australian music, to give local emergency news and involved the local community in day-to-day running of the station." Mr Carrick said the radio station was a great connector for the community. "We have 26 primary schools throughout the Yarra Valley taking part in our 'School's In' program," Mr Carrick said. "We have many local community groups come in to chat about what they are doing in their community." To become a member, or to donate, visit www.yarravalleyfm.com.

Top teams hard to separate By Cameron Hutchison Round 9 was played in cold, slippery and sometimes foggy conditions. There were some surprises with the wins and losses on Saturday and there is now a log jam in the Division 1 competition with the top 5 sides all sitting on six wins at the halfway mark of the season. Division 2 sees Seville take top spot by percentage after Yarra Glen's first loss for the season. The winners in senior football: Wandin, Healesville, Monbulk, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Alexandra, Gembrook-Cockatoo, Seville and Yarra Junction. A Grade netball winners: Healesville, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin, Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Kinglake. Division 1 Seniors Football Wandin 10.7.67 d Emerald 6.18.54 Wandin share top spot but are fourth on percentage after a win over Emerald. Emerald were chasing tail all day as Wandin got off to a handy start but only had a slim lead of three points at quarter time. They kicked away in the second, with 6 goals to 1, and went into the main break 32 points up. Emerald won the third quarter, kicking 3.1 to 1.5, but the margin was still 20 points. Emerald peppered the goals in the last with 1.7 to 1 goal straight and really should have had the game won, but wastefulness in front of goal cost them in the end. Wandin Best: S. Wettenhall (3 goals), B. Harvey (1 goal), T. Leech-Hines, P. Hodgett, P. Bruzzese, J. Byrne Emerald Best: D. Edwards, S. Semmens (1 goal), J. Rich (1 goal), B. Wood, A. Quirk (1 goal), N. Jansen (2 goals) Healesville 10.17.77 d Upwey-Tecoma 6.4.40 Healesville are also equal first, but fifth on percentage after a surprising win over UpweyTecoma. Healesville started well, kicking 4.5 to 2.2 in the first to set up a handy lead by 15 points. Upwey won the second quarter, just, and reduced the margin at the main break to 13 points. Healesville turned on the burners a bit in the third, kicking 4.2 to 1.1 and the margin was now looking tough for Upwey. Healesville peppered the goals in the last, but accuracy plagued them, and they were still able to come away with the win by 37 points. Healesville Best: J. Nugent, L. Daly, J. RoeDuggan (2 goals), D. Plozza, A. Fraraccio, B. Murphy Upwey-Tecoma Best: W. Duncan, B. Bantoft, S. Waters, B. Neil, S. Dawson, D. Bell Monbulk 13.18.96 d Belgrave 7.6.48 Monbulk sit one win out of the five after a solid performance against Belgrave. Monbulk were in control from the outset and had a big lead by 33 points at quarter time. Belgrave won the second quarter, kicking 3.2 to 1.3 and reduced the margin to 22 points. Monbulk jumped into action in the third, with 5.6 to 2.1 to put the game out of Belgrave's reach. A lacklustre last quarter, but Belgrave still won it but the game was all Monbulk's. Monbulk Best: S. Williams (2 goals), N. Wall, M. Langworthy (1 goal), P. Barge (3 goals), N. McPherson, K. Linde Belgrave Best: T. Stubley, J. McDermott (1 goal), J. Marshall, N. Somervaille (1 goal), C. Power, L. Caton-Thomas Olinda Ferny Creek 19.21.135 d Warburton Millgrove 3.7.25 Olinda have bounced back after a 110-point win over Warburton and are back on top of the ladder by percentage. They were a bit wasteful in front of goal in the first, but had a lead of 22 points at quarter time. They increased that lead to 37 points at half-time. A big 7-goal to 1 third quarter, as heavy fog set in, and the margin had blown out to 73 points which was well out of reach for Warburton. A final 5.5 to 1 behind and the final siren was Warburton's friend at the end of the day. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: D. Troutman (2 goals), M. Wright (6 goals), B. Currie, M. Hottes, D. Noorda, L. Hill Warburton-Millgrove Best: L. Barnard, T. McKail, J. Walker, S. Andueza, M. Leeds (2 goals), M. Read Woori Yallock 19.18.132 d Mt Evelyn 6.8.44 Woori Yallock are second only by percent24 MAIL

Wandin's Harrison Byrne leads the race to the ball. 182224 age after knocking over sixth-placed Mt Evelyn who are only 1 win behind Olinda at the end of the day. Woori Yallock kicked 5.4 to 2.1 in the first and really set up the rest of the game. A big 7-goal quarter to 1 and it was all Woori Yallock at half time with a lead of 55 points. Mount Evelyn could only manage 3 behinds in the third to Woori's 4.9 and it was all over. It was goal for goal in the last but to no avail for the Mounters. Woori Yallock Best: E. Alexandra got early honours, kicking 4.4 to 2.2 in the first and a lead of 14 points. Kinglake kicked 6.4 to 2.4 in the second to swing the lead in their favour by 10 points at half-time. Alexandra found some extra legs in the third, kicking 7.2 to 5.2 and the score was now Alexandra's by 2 points. It was a tight, tough last quarter but Alexandra just managed to hang on. Gembrook got the early break and led by 15 points at quarter time. Four goals to 3 in the second and Gembrook increased their lead to 19 points at half-time. Powelltown held Gembrook goalless in the third and kicked two goals themselves to reduce the margin to 8 points at the final change. Powelltown could not maintain it in the last and Gembrook ran away with a hard earnt 10-point win. Gembrook Cockatoo Best: T. Lockyer (4 goals), T. Whytcross, A. Mitchell, D. South, B. Wareham, L. ter a very big win. Seville were in control from the outset and have kicked the highest score to date in this year's competition. Thornton could only manage 1 goal for the day, but Seville amassed goals in the second quarter and 15 in the last to end with 43 goals for the day. Seville Best: J. Neal (12 goals), D. Parker Yarra Junction 17.7.109 d Yarra Glen 8.10.58 In what some would say was the major upset of the day was the awesome effort made by Yarra Junction to inflict Yarra Glen's first defeat of the season and drop them to second on the ladder albeit by percentage. Yarra Junction kicked 6 goals to 2 in the first and went into the second quarter with a 25-point lead. Both teams tightened things up in the second and only kicked 2 each so it was still game on at half time. Yarra Junction kicked 5.1 to a wasteful Yarra Glen's 4.5 to be up by 25 points at the last change. Yarra Glen was still in with a show until the Eagles outclassed and outplayed them holding them scoreless in the last but still managed to kick 4.2 themselves. Yarra Junction Best: C. Hoare, D. A mixed bag
Cross country athletes
After a week at the home ground last week, Monbulk Junior Footy headed off to play various away teams. A bit of a mixed bag with results as we move into the second half of the season. Keep fighting, Hawks. Under 9s They played very well and demonstrated a high level of skill and commitment to their team. They used the ball well and shared with their teammates. They kicked a lot of goals and took plenty of marks. Best: Luca Ploeg, Bailey McConchie, Ava Sproat, Hudson Comfort, Ben White. Under 10s They started brilliantly against a strong Mount Evelyn side. Mount Evelyn played a very solid last three quarters; the team worked hard all day and continue to improve. When they stick to their structures, things work. Best: Finn C, Isaac M, Robert C, Jed F, Ethan K Under 11s They had a strong start to the game and led at one stage. However, they struggled to complete in the air; great effort, however, and some fantastic individual performances. Monbulk 1.0.6 v Upwey 2.6.18 Best: Etienne. Hamish. Thomas. Xavier. Jack Under 12s It was not their day. The scoreboard cannot reflect the effort and contest the boys displayed. Sometimes it doesn't go your way, but that's OK. Well done to every single boy. Monbulk 0.0.0 v Mt Evelyn 11.1.67 Best: Joel, Jason, Kody, Jacob, Lucas Under 14s Blue The opposition came out firing, but credit to the team for fighting back the next three quarters and never giving up. Monbulk 2.4.16 v Mt Evelyn 8.7.55 Best: Coby P, Will H, Charlie B, Jayden S,
Last week was a big week of cross country championships for Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes. Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships, Victorian Open Cross Country Championships and LAVIC Eastern Region Cross Country Championships kept everyone busy. Special mention to the six club athletes Harry Norman, Lily Peacock, Georgia Laven, Maddie Laven, Kiara Flavel and Indigo Linde - who were selected to represent Victoria at the Australian Cross Country Championships iN Maleny, Queensland, in August. Noah (Under 14s Green) clears the ball from defence. Bradley L-W Under 14s Green A really good effort against a strong opposition. They team got a goal; the first one in weeks. Commitment and effort remain the strong suit. Monbulk 1.1.7 v Wandin 14.13.97 Best: Jamie T, Sam N, Moe H, Aaron N, Mika B Under 14s Girls Monbulk 5.4.34 v Emerald 2.2.14 Best: Ruby R, Jade F, Alexia R, Maddie L Under 16s The boys were fantastic! A bit of a slow start then finished strong across the ground. Moving and sharing of the ball was a stand out. Well done. Monbulk 21.17.143 v Woori Yallock 1.1.7 Best: Dylan G, Gary R, Toby H, Laine F, Jayden S Under 18s Girls After a quiet first quarter, the girls got a quick goal which set the tone for the rest of the game, with a cracking win against a strong team. Monbulk 6.4.40 v Gembrook 1.5.11 Best: Steph, Ellen, Maddy G, Shayla

New supercar on its way Toyota has confirmed it has started development of a road-going super sports car that uses the same hybrid drivetrain technology as that honed in its Le Mans-winning Toyota GAZOO Racing TS050 Hybrid race car. The announcement coincided with the Japanese carmaker's historic first ever win in the iconic 24 hours of Le Mans World Endurance Championship race in France. Shigeki Tomoyama, President of GAZOO Racing Company, said that competing in the World Endurance Championship - one of the most demanding motorsports series - and racing at Le Mans had helped Toyota advance the development of its hybrid technology. "We started this project because we believe that creating a super sports car that delivers the same appeal as the TS050 Hybrid greatly adds to Toyota's involvement in WEC. And at some point in the near future, customers will have a chance to get behind the wheel of this incredible machine and experience its astonishing power and driving performance," Tomoyama said. To further whet fans' appetites, Toyota displayed the GR Super Sport Concept at the Toyota GAZOO Racing 'Fan Village' during the Le Mans race. The GR Super Sport Concept was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January and features the same 735kW (1000hp) twin-turbo V6
The sports design is sure to turn a few heads. Toyota Hybrid System - Racing (THS-R) drivetrain as the TS050 race car. Beneath the sleek white bodywork, the GR Super Sport Concept shares many of its components with the TS050 race car reflecting Toyota GAZOO Racing's aim to ensure that technologies and know-how acquired in motorsport are fed back into new production vehicles.
Roadside rubbish in revolting rise of random refuse Illegal dumping of rubbish is a huge problem for VicRoads across Eastern Victoria, causing environmental and safety hazards, taking up many hours of labour and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. VicRoads Eastern Regional Director, Scott Lawrence, said that when members of the community report illegally dumped waste, valuable resources are redirected from delivering other important services to remove the items from public land. "The cost of labour, bin hire, disposal of waste items correctly and the use of specialist contractors occasionally to remove illegally dumped rubbish from roadsides, rest areas and truck pull-off areas is costing the Eastern Region more than $150,000 a year. "VicRoads is committed to keeping our roads clean, however waste control continues to be an ongoing challenge, particularly when people use the roadside as a dumping ground,"
Mr Lawrence said. The most common items removed from roadsides include tyres, mattresses, syringes, asbestos and household rubbish. A recent clean-up of a truck pull-up area involved bottles and bags of human waste. "Illegal dumping is not only unsightly but can also threaten wildlife, cause fires and lead to long-term contamination of land and waterways," he said. "I urge members of the community to report illegal dumping of rubbish to the EPA or contact the police." The illegal dumping of contaminated fill materials, tyres, manufacturing, and construction and demolition waste is an indictable offence, which can attract a maximum penalty of $610,700 or seven years' imprisonment for an individual, and more than $1.2 million for a corporation. The EPA 24-hour pollution hotline is 1300 372 842.

The top three winter mistakes made behind the wheel With cold weather approaching, RACV is warning motorists to be prepared and take extra care when driving in winter conditions. Driving in severe weather can be challenging and dangerous, so motorists should try to avoid the three big mistakes of winter driving. Poorly prepared vehicles, speeding, and a failure to treat the icy conditions with respect, are a disastrous cocktail that can lead to accidents and damage to vehicles. 1. Poor preparation. Amazingly, research has found that tyres were often neglected, with one in five cars on Victoria’s roads had at least one unroadworthy tyre. Many car owners also forget to look at other critical items, too. Check your tyres, windscreen wipers, the battery, lights, brakes, heater and cooling system before heading off. Slush and mud were particularly hard on vehicles so drivers should get their cars serviced regularly. We can’t stress enough how important tyres are to a car’s safety. In slippery conditions like you would find in the snowfields, tyres need to be in tip-top condition. Tyres must have plenty of tread depth and no damage. They should also be inflated to the correct pressure. But be aware this can vary from car to car. The recommended minimum tyre presmailcommunity.com.au
Ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving conditions. 156080 sures are usually listed on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb or glovebox. And don’t forget you have five tyres, not four so give the spare some love too. If your spare is a space-saver, be aware of its speed and distance restrictions. 2. Driving too fast for winter conditions
Remember it takes much longer to stop in the wet, so don’t follow other cars too closely when it is raining or if the roads are wet. Increase the gap between you and the car in front to allow for this. If you’re driving in the high country and encounter snow, drive to the conditions and take
it easy. Even if the snow has been cleared, the road is still likely to be slippery and black ice is always a danger. Use the brake, accelerator and steering smoothly. Always remember that the speed limit is just that; a limit. It is not telling you the speed you must drive at. Drive at a speed that you are comfortable and don’t be pressured to speed up by other motorists. That said, drive courteously and use slow vehicle turn-offs if you need to. 3. Not reacting to the worsening winter weather. If it is foggy don’t put your lights on high beam, as this makes the road harder to see. Instead, use low beam, as this keeps the light on the road. Use front and rear fog lamps if the conditions are bad enough, but remember the rules about when they can be used. In wet weather, use your air-conditioner to prevent your windscreen from fogging up. However, if visibility is so limited that you can’t see the edges of the road or other vehicles at a safe distance, it’s time to pull over and wait for the conditions to ease. At some alpine locations, snow chains are compulsory. VicRoads have an information page on the rules regarding their use. Tuesday, 26 June, 2018
