CoRE’s birthday By Kath Gannaway Healesville Community Renewable Energy (CoRE)'s first birthday was a mix of celebration and inspiration. More than 200 people gathered at The Memo in Healesville for the 'Our Solar Town From Dreams to Reality' catch up one year on. Cr Fiona McAllister opened the event recognising that the project that started with a small steering committee, exploded with a public meeting of almost 300 people had powered ahead. "What has happened in that year is incredible for just 12 months," she said. "Jeff (Barlow) and Julian Guess (Yarra Ranges Council) held together a very small team that pulled together Healesville CoRE in this very room," she said. "I'm very proud that Council has been able to support CoRe in many ways." She said renewable energy groups and projects were now operating successfully in Yarra Glen, Warburton, and Healesville. "I would like to think when we stand here in another year's time that there are another five towns doing this sort of thing," she said. CoRe founder and president, Jeff Barlow, paid tribute to the committed volunteers who have worked solidly to progress the solar vision to transform Healesville into a Net Zero town, using only renewable energy. "There is a huge amount of love coming from these people for each other and for the community," he said. He thanked CoRe's supporters and sponsors, Yarra Ranges Council, Healesville Community Bendigo Bank, Healesville RSL and Healesville Living & Learning Centre. "Healesville CoRe can't do on our own," he said. "We are an enabler and we need the community to communicate what they want," he said. Dr Yasmina Dkhissi and Luke Barry of Monsh University's Net Zero Project who along with Nick Seymour ran the Healesille CoRe Options Study. The study looked at three homes in Healesville looking at ways of reducing energy use in the different demographics and home types.

In one house, three upgrades - underfloor insulation, installation of a heat pump and an energy efficient clothes dryer resulted in a reduction in energy use of 47 per cent. Matthew Charles-Jones from Mondo Power spoke of micro and mini grids and of the Totally Renewable Yakendandah Experience which has delivered incredible community, business and resident savings in that town. The most revealing, and locally inspiring, presentation came from Simon Woodland, Executive Officer Environmental Stewardship, with Yarra Ranges Council. He said the Carbon management Program

was established to support the Council's commitment to achieving a 30 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. He said more than 2000 solar panels had been installed on 25 council buildings including The Memo and spoke of their involvement alongside other municipalities in the Solar Savers program which facilitates solar energy for pensioners and their partnerships which will enable businesses to take up solar. Disused tip sites could be utililised as solar farms in the future. Mr Barlow recapped a number of CoRe achievements including putting in place the

structures needed to ensure the organisation could progress with a clear direction for the future. "Working with council to get the bulk buy up and running and running a series of community events on solar electricity, batteries and hot water and on solar for landlords and tenants, as well as running some training days for our volunteers so they can be skilled with the information and knowledge they need for the work they are doing, are also among our first year's achievements," he said. Shorts shift a success By Kath Gannaway Playing to a near full house at every session over the weekend of 15 to 17 June, the 2018 Warburton Film Festival showed once again that it is a mecca for film-lovers, and an asset to Warburton's cultural and social calendar. The eight films were an eclectic selection of drama, comedy and documentary from six different countries with the Show Us Your Shorts short film session on the Saturday a highlight of the program. The two-hour session featured the winners of the competition which is now in its 10th year with entries coming from around Australia. Introducing the session, Yarra Ranges Film Society treasurer and competition organiser Laurie Hastings said the competition was a legacy of late society member Jan Cameron who following her death in 2008 bequeathed money to assist emerging film-makers. The Society now funds the competition with the same goal in mind, to assist emerging film-makers. In a move designed to lift the profile of the short films, the screening was moved from the Friday to bring the films entirely within the main program as supporting films to the main film. "We received 41 entries from around Australia and the overall quality was high," Mr Hastings said introducing the winners.

Maggie Sail, founding member of the Film Festival, introduced ''Show Us Your Shorts''. 182207

YOU’RE MORE SUITED THAN YOU MIGHT THINK

Other winners were Adrian Jeffs who won the local award for his documentary-style "life disrupted", Jordan Warren from Hoddles Creek for 'Get Fired Up', Clarity Houniet from Warburton for 'Don't stop the motion' and GaiaLily Mitting for 'Puddles' who received Encouragement Awards. Vice President Sally Ahern said the short films are an added bonus to the festival with a selection of 14 films shown during the weekend. "Listening to discussions and reading feedback forms, this part of the program is highly valued," she said.

Theatre goers rated the films with a star system after each viewing. 182207

Robyn retires after 21 years By Kath Gannaway When Robyn Argent steps into retirement after 21 years at the main street Healesville Pharmacy, she'll be saying 'farewell' rather than 'goodbye' to wonderful colleagues and countless hundreds of customers she has got to know over the years. "I'm not moving. I'm staying around and I'll still be involved in community," Robyn said as her final day, Wednesday, 27 June, approaches. Robyn was mum to Craig, nine, and Colleen, 12, when the family came to Healesville and, after a stint as owners of the IGA supermarket, she put her resume into the pharmacy. Although she already had a busy community life as a CFA volunteer and Guide Leader, Robyn said she welcomed the opportunity to do formal training through her work.

"I did Pharmacy 2, studying at home on different topics related to work," she said. "Sometimes it would be midnight before I finished a chapter or assignment, but it was good to be getting that knowledge." Among many changes to the industry over the years, she said the growing need for product knowledge was one of the big challenges. "There's so much out there now and a lot of things have changed over the years," she said. "When I started we were doing films, now we have machines in the pharmacy," she said. Asked what she would miss most, Robyn said just working, and the people. "You get to know a lot of people and a big part of the job is just listening to people," she said. "A lot have come in to wish me well, and that's been lovely."

IN BRIEF Wandin East oval damage Police are appealing for information regarding damage to the Wandin East Oval at the Recreation Reserve on the corner of MonbulkSeville Road and Wandin East Road. At 11.20pm on Thursday 14 June, a car has driven onto the playing surface and then churned up the grass causing between $8000 $12,000 worth of damage. A silver coloured dual cab utility was seen leaving the reserve shortly after and was also seen driving in a dangerous manner in the area. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Ross McDonald at Yarra Ranges CIU on 9739 2401.

Big Roast hits the spot for a big cause Four high-profile Yarra Valley restaurants have pitched in for The Big Roast in support of cystic fibrosis research. Toolangi Tavern, Oakridge Wines, De Bortoli Yarra Valley and Rob Dolan Wines are supporting the annual July fundraiser, and supporting Toolangi's Bowness family. Healesville couple Stephen and Kirsty Bowness have two children, Liam and Grace, both of whom have cystic fibrosis. Each July, they raise funds and awareness for CF through Big Roast events in people's homes as well as restaurants. At the age of four, Grace referred to her dis-

ease as 'Sixty Five Roasters' in an attempt to master the tricky 'cystic fibrosis', and so The Big Roast for CF fundraiser got its name. The event has raised over $100,000 over the past nine years for the Royal Children's Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust, and they are aiming high once again this year. "We're just so excited to have four big-name Yarra Valley restaurants running events this year, and it worked out so well, with an event on each weekend in July," Kirsty said. "Whether you host a roast at home for friends who make a donation, or buy a ticket to one of these gorgeous lunches and dinner, you'll know you're making a difference to the

lives of so many," Kirsty said. Toolangi Tavern will kick off the first of the fundraiser lunches on Saturday, 7 July, and lucky patrons will get to drink donated awardwinning Levantine Hill wines with their roast lunch with Oakridge on 14 July, De Bortoli on 21 July and Rob Dolan on 29 July. Many local businesses have dug deep with their donations for the lunches. As a result, there are amazing raffle prizes to be won including cases of wine, restaurant vouchers, gourmet hampers - even luxury B&B accommodation. Working on your immunity Healthy

living Tim Howden

Paediatric Naturopath – Healesville A child's immune system is developing and coordinating itself in the first few years of life and it's common for children to encounter infections in this time. However recurring infections and development of ongoing inflammation is a sign of immune deregulation.

Perhaps your child gets sick frequently or has a constant sniffle or suffers from allergies or eczema? While these aren't life-threatening, they indicate immune dysfunction and can significantly impact on learning and development. Identifying the cause is imperative to success. If a floor is flooded because of a dripping tap, it is of little use to mop up the floor unless the tap is turned off. The water from the tap represents the cause of disease, the flooded floor, the symptoms. When treating issues with immunity it is far more effective to turn off the tap rather than continue to mop up the symptoms. Immunity is a complicated business and involves an array specialised cells that communicate to provide various lines of defences. There are specialised proteins, antibodies

and cytokines that influence the immune system to function efficiently. This orchestration takes its cues from nutrients, the environment and the lifestyle of your family. Conditions like Eczema, Asthma, Allergy and Recurrent infection indicate problems within this network. But deciding where to begin can be overwhelming which is why working with a qualified health professional is essential. If you desire long lasting results then addressing the cause is essential. Common causes of immune dysfunction include Nutrient deficiency, Microbiome imbalance and Environmental drivers Studies suggest that up to ? of children are zinc deficient due to poor diet. Low zinc hinders T lymphocytes and can leave an individual susceptible to conditions like eczema, allergy and recurrent infection..

Reduced gut-microbe diversity and intestinal permeability hinder immunity. Gut flora maintain a protective barrier against pathogens and help induce Tregs immune cells, which are crucial for immune tolerance. Human trials have confirmed more robust immune responses when particular strains of probiotics are used. Environmental conditions such as mould can result in antibiotic resistant Staphylococci infection (MARCoNS). This can only be treated once the mould is remediated. I hope this brief piece has inspired you to address any concerns of poor immunity you may have and encourage you to work with a healthcare professional to address individual needs and systematically evaluate the many aspects that govern robust immune health.

In the know on the snow Mount Donna Buang is the closest snow play mountain to Melbourne and, thanks to Visit Warburton - the Waterwheel facebook page it has one of the very best online snow report resources in the state. When the mountain was blanketed in a sumptuous layer of snow recently, local women Lindy Schneider and Suyin Chan who manage the page, took to the Visit Warburton facebook page with regular snow updates, loads of photos and a great FAQ (frequently asked questions) to let everyone know that Mount Donna was open for snow business! "Visit Warburton has a direct line of communication with Parks Vic and Richard Ireland who runs Mountain Tucker at the summit, and who gives us snow reports every morning,"

Suyin said of their first big snow day. Over that weekend 'Visit Warburton' had significant activity and fantastic reach aimed at giving the best snow experience for visitors wanting to enjoy everything from making a snowman (or woman) to launching a few snowballs and tobogganing on the well-maintained toboggan runs. The Visit Warburton facebook page is a community-driven initiative backed by Warburton Valley CEDA and involving countless volunteer hours by a dedicated group of locals. For Lindy and Suyin local knowledge and timely information is vital. "It's really important that people are prepared with the right information," Lindy said. "For a lot of people Mount Donna Buang is their first-time snow time experience and there's a real education role here about be-

Dream pair eye big stage By Derek Schlennstedt Bridget Murphy cannot remember a time when she did not love horses. For her, riding is a release. A driven and motivated 29-year-old, Bridget's dream is to represent Australia at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, 2020. That dream is a little closer now after she found the dressage horse 'Sunrise' (Sunny) who she believes will take her to Tokyo. Documenting her journey, the connection between rider and horse, and the inspirational attitude that Bridget exhibits is 16-year-old Healesville resident, Abigail van Bergeijk, who has produced a video focusing on Bridget's ability as a dressage rider, which overwhelmingly overshadows her disability. The video is part of the open entrant - documentary genre in this years Focus On Ability Short Film festival. "I heard about the festival and was really interested in entering it," Abi said. "The festival asks film makers to focus on the ability of a person with a disability ... I immediately thought of Bridget because I've grown up riding with her and looking up to her and she's always been an inspiration to me." Bridget was born with Multiple Pterygium Syndrome meaning she has muscle weaknesses and joint formations that restrict her movement. Though, she has never let her disability stop her from reaching her goal to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in Para Dressage, which she describes as "dancing on Horseback". "I think every horse rider has that dream of representing their country ... I didn't think it was possible until two to three years ago when I met some people who were quite influential," she said. "There is always a way, you just have to find the way that works for you."

Bridget Murphy, Sunny and Abigail van Bergeijk at Ashwood Performance Horses. Pairing and finding a horse that matches Bridget's riding style is extremely important. In March this year, a mutual friend of Bridget's was the key to finding 'Sunny' a horse from Ashwood Performance Horses in Don Valley, who Bridget said is "perfect". Already the duo are showing their capabilities by scoring well at competitions. "I've just started riding sunny this year and

we're going to campaign together ... he is an amazing and very special horse," Bridget said. "We went into the first comp with seven rides together and scored really well." The video created, edited and produced entirely by Abi, with the help of an original score by her friend Chloe, has since attracted over 1000 views on the Focus on Ability website. Both Abi and Bridget said they were amazed

by the incredible outpouring of support.. Both said the support that it has got so far is amazing and they 'weren't really expecting it'. The Focus On Ability Short Film Awards are in their 10th year and attracts entries from all over the world. *People can vote for the film until 3 July. THE LOWDOWN

LETTERS Traffic chaos will ensue

Q&A

with Jill Sebire from Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead in Wandin

Jill Sebire. What is something people generally don't know about you? They don't know that I am not a local. I come from Geelong but I learnt a lot about the area with my husband, Alvin's, mum, and it's a nice thing to be part of the local history here. What is one of your most memorable moments? When I met Alvin at the stage door of the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. It was 1964 and he was playing in the orchestra. What would your final meal be? Crayfish. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? Geelong winning a grand final. What is your favourite television show? Judge John Deed. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

I would like to have football's 'three wise monkeys' Lou Richards, Jack Dyer and Bobby Davis from Geelong - they would be a hoot! Then Megan Gibbons one of our Mont De Lancey volunteers, and my mum and dad, now gone, Bob and Eunice Whiteley. What was the first, or the best film, you have seen? The first film I saw was South Pacific. I enjoyed it immensely and could watch it again and again. What are you working on right now? I'm getting ready for the Mont De Lancey annual art show in September. It's for local artists in the valley. They're all nice people and it's a joy to have something like that. What keeps your interest in Monty De Lancey alive? I'm inquisitive about people. I like meeting people and I think I'm a good listener. I really like listening to people's stories.

I am one of many residents of Old Warburton worried about the Mountain Bike Hub project. Our biggest concern is the effect the shuttling on the Old Warburton and La La roads will have on residents' safety and amenity. Yarra Ranges Council is proposing shuttle buses to run from Warburton to the top of Mt Tugwell, delivering riders to the top of the trails. Obviously, large numbers of private vehicles will do the same. Old Warburton Road is narrow and dangerous. Many residents experienced near misses with hoons when the illegal mountain bike trails were in full swing a couple of years ago. DELWP closed these tracks because of the effects of shuttling on residents. Five proposed trails meet Old Warburton Road near the old cemetery - and this is an obvious point the public would use to access the network. The council has given us no explanation as to how they will prevent parking and traffic chaos in what is currently a quiet residential area. This whole project needs a total rethink with more consideration for residents that will have to live with its effects. Damien Flynn, Warburton

Good Samaritan Several weeks ago in Coles car park in Healesville I found a note under my windscreen wiper alerting me to a very flat tyre on my car. I had it fixed straight away and if it wasn't for this good deed I could have been struck half way home to Toolangi with nowhere to pull over or turn around on the curving narrow road. So, Paul S (my good Samaritan) , thank you very much. I'm extremely grateful to you. Ally Down Toolangi.

Broken trust Over the years, I have written a number of funding applications for local groups. In every

case, I lay everything before the bodies to who the applications were addressed. Transparency was paramount. I believe that before any funding is allocated, Federal and State governments owe it to their taxpayers; Councils owe it to their ratepayers and banks owe it to their shareholders, to acquaint themselves with proposals and possible impacts on residents and environment. Along came the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project! How many councillors, parliamentarians and bank board members visited Old Warburton to view the proposal site, or talk to residents? NONE. The public could be forgiven for not knowing that the project even passed through Old Warburton. The Staff of Cox Architecture entered private property, without permission, marking trails with streamers on trees. Facing possible charges of trespass, the project managers now say," that unless agreed to by the landowner, no trails will go on private land" The same staff marked trails throughout the Old Warburton Cemetery, (the first registered cemetery in the district and last resting place of over 20 souls). It has only been since our complaints, that Council has acknowledged that trails were incorrectly aligned and no trails will go through the cemetery. Errors like this should never happen. Residents of Old Warburton have been treated dismissively. For years, Ellena Biggs and I have researched the history of this area for walking tours. We have shared our research with DELWP staff and now feel betrayed that they would misuse it in this way. Allowing cyclists to ride on tracks through an area that the Heritage Study describes as "quite fragile" and "needs to be protected from increased visitation", is nothing less than criminal. The recent traffic, parking and toileting chaos at the Redwoods, shows that Warburton is unprepared for the annual 165,000 mountain bike visitors that the project proposes . Time for a rethink! To understand more of our concerns, I urge you to visit our Website www.oldwarburton. com or attend our public meeting at the Warburton Arts Centre 7pm 27th June. Rosemary Crowley Old Warburton

Salons called upon By Derek Schlennstedt An increase in this year's sexual offences statistics for the Yarra Ranges has prompted the Eastern Domestic Violence Service (EDVOS) to call on salon professionals to help respond. Salon professionals in the Healesville and Eastern Metropolitan region are being offered voluntary training and resources to help them safely recognise the signs of family violence and refer women who need support. EDVOS has developed the HaiR-3R's (Recognise, Respond and Refer) program - an innovative new approach that provides early intervention, specifically for salon professionals, to support women who may be facing violence or controlling behaviour at home. EDVOS Executive Director, Jenny Jackson, said that for this year the program has trained 150 hairdressers and salon professionals. "We've trained approximately 150 hairdressers and salon professional this year and the feedback is overwhelming and really positive," she said. Students feel ripped off By Derek Schlennstedt Wandin Yallock Primary School students and staff have been left upset over the removal of many of its plants, which were ripped out and taken over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. Since the start of the school year, Grade 6 students at the school had made an effort to plany many trees so they could leave a positive legacy for others to enjoy and follow. As many as 100 plants had been part of the project, which had been planted throughout the grounds. Now, the removal has angered many and the school has put out a plea for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to contact Lilydale Police on (03) 9739 2300. Teacher aid Katherine Byatt said the stu-

dents were devastated to find out that many of the plants had been ripped out during the long weekend. "The boys have been working on this for quite some time ... in summer they started digging when it was like concrete, so it took them ages to dig the holes," she said. "We were given around 100 plants from Kuranga native nursery and two of them were really special gum trees that were specially grafted ... they are the ones which are most noticeably missing." Ms Byatt said that, because the students were leaving next year, the plants and garden area had profound meaning to the students, who could have returned in later years and seen their growth.

NEWS

Keen for Kenya cash push By Derek Schlennstedt A fund-raiser to send Kenyan children to school will be held in Healesville next month and residents are invited to come along and help others - and get fed along the way. Yarra Glen resident, Esther Rijk, will run the Keen for Kenya fundraiser at Healesville's Sanctuary House Motel on Friday, 4 August, from 6.30pm. The fundraiser, which is in its fifth year, aims to raise money to send children from the Kibera slum in Kenya to a boarding school for their secondary schooling. Ms Rijk said the fundraiser was born many years ago after a visit to the slum. Since then, the Kickstart project has helped many children receive a secondary education - something she said many don't get the opportunity to have. "I started doing it as a bit of a hobby as i wanted to get some of the kids I taught through secondary school," she said. "Not many kids there have any hope of getting to a decent high school, as its really expensive. "So when I got back, I tried to fund some by myself and it's just become bigger and bigger." "The idea is to get them out of the slum, it's a pretty negative environment, especially for the girls and so we help to get them into boarding school which is a much more positive environment ... to give them the best chance at a brighter future." The fundraiser is run under The Kickstart Project Inc., a formalised and registered charity to raise money for the children's scholarships. At the Sanctuary House event, attendees pay $50 per head (before July 30) for a twocourse meal, and will be able to take part in a live auction. Some of the prizes on offer in the auction include accommodation packages in the Yarra Ranges, some wine from Yarra Valley wineries and art from the valley and from Africa. Ms Rijk said that the fundraiser last year raised around $25,000 for the Kenyan students, and that she would like to achieve that goal in the upcoming event.

The donation of a new examination chair will enhance the comfort of women attending the gynaecology clinic at Healesville Hospital & Yarra Valley Health. The chair comes from proceeds of a concert given in Healesville recently by the Australian Medical Orchestra. Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery Jo Mapes said the new chair would play an important part in providing better care for the local community. 1000 Portrait Project By Kath Gannaway Mail readers will be familiar with Healesville photographer Jesse Graham's work as a former photojournalist with the Mail, but not perhaps with his brilliant portraiture. His interest in photography developed from taking photos on his first camera phone to when he got his first 'real' camera at 16 while still at Healesville High School. The 'bug' really bit around four years ago when he challenged himself to take a photo a day. "It was a way of learning my way around the camera and learning the different techniques and use of the settings through taking photos in different situations, landscapes, under different light conditions, day and night ..." he said as he prepares to hang a major exhibition which launches in July. The 1000 Portrait Project, a three-year documentation of people from the wider Melbourne area and their stories followed on from that first photo-a-day challenge, inspired by a growing admiration for the art of portraiture. Jesse said he was particularly inspired by National Geographic photojournalist Steve McCurry's famous 1984 photographic portrait of Sharbat Gula titled 'Afghan Girl'. "I've always loved portraiture. I bought McCurry's book and decided I wanted to do a large-scale project which I thought would also be another worthwhile learning tool." Undoubtedly his experience as a journalist

has played into the way he approaches participants, who vary from family members and friends to co-workers and passers-by on the street. While the photographs in many ways speak for themselves, and stand alone as compelling portraits, the words are important. "I write a bit about how I know the person, about my relationship with them, and more recently I've been interviewing people and asking a few questions. "The words are important in contextualising and giving an insight into the person," Jesse says. The project which is due to finish in 2019, is halfway completed and one of the biggest challenges right now for the artist is choosing the works that will feature in the exhibition which opens at Red Earth Gallery, Mooroolbark Community Centre, on Thursday, 5 July at 6pm. In the meantime, Jesse said he is looking for another 480 people to complete the project. For more information on the 1000 Portrait Project visit facebook.com/1000portrait project ; on the exhibition bit. ly/1000PortraitsExhibition, or email 1000portraitproject@gmail.com . 1000 Portrait Project is part of Yarra Ranges Council's Framed Festival which celebrates photographic portraiture in the Yarra Ranges and includes exhibitions, floor talks, workshops and a competition. Evocation feels special By Kath Gannaway Fine art photographer Kate Baker has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Sydney and Melbourne, but her next exhibition is particularly personal. 'Evocation', an exhibition of silver gelatin photographs handcrafted in her Warburton darkroom, opens at the Waterwheel Gallery in Warburton on Saturday 7 July - very close to home! It's her first exhibition in her own community and she says it feels different. 'Evocation' is a collection of Kate's works made during the past 14 years incorporating a variety of images including some from around the valley and others from further afield. "This feels different and special in the sense that when I lived in Sydney it is a city and you are exhibiting in a city, but now I live in a small community, I know a lot of people here and it feels very personal, and very particular to me. "A lot of people may have seen some of the photographs I make at community events such as markets, for the film society and they may know the Boys to Man (project) photographs, but maybe not so many would have seen all my artistic work," Kate said of the opportunity to show a chosen volume of work 'at home'. The darkroom process is as integral to the

Despite being disjointed and having few story ideas of its own, Fallen Kingdom is more viscerally exciting than its 2015 predecessor and takes the tone of the Jurassic Park franchise in another exciting new direction. Activist Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and animal behaviourist Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) join an expedition to rescue cloned dinosaurs from an imminent volcanic eruption. Meanwhile, the corporation behind the expedition has secretly created another deadly dinosaur hybrid, the Indoraptor, in their laboratory. The characters are basic archetypes and the first act feels incredibly rushed. While the film has fun performances, and direc-

tor J.A. Bayona shows real flair for breathtaking imagery and perilous action setpieces, Fallen Kingdom feels like it's killing time until the climax, and the island rescue premise is a pretty blatant rehash of The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). But what a climax Fallen Kingdom has. While the first Jurassic World film experimented with a satirical tone, Fallen Kingdom's tense, claustrophobic third act feels almost like a slasher movie, as the malicious Indoraptor (which has a more human-level scale than most other dinosaur antagonists in the franchise) stalks its heroes primarily through dimly-lit interior settings. Like the genetically spliced Indoraptor, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is good in bits and pieces, but it's still a generally fun ride and has a chilling conclusion. -Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

NEWS

New CEO announced Australia's third largest property listing site has announced the appointment of Toby Balazs as the new Chief Executive Officer of VIEW.com. au (formerly RealestateVIEW.com.au) effective 16 July. Mr Balazs will take over from VIEW's Enzo Raimondo, who has been closely involved with the property listing portal for over 16 years, first as CEO of Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) and later taking over as CEO of RealestateVIEW in 2016. Mr Balazs joins VIEW having served as a key member of REA's leadership and online strategy teams since 2004. Announcing Toby's appointment, VIEW Chairman John Piccolo said Mr Balazs is a dynamic thinker and leader. "His track record in executing transformative digital programs has been exceptional and he embodies VIEW's values of innovation, integrity

and fostering strong family ideals", he said. "VIEW's continued mission to make property buying more intuitive, easier to understand and informative will only be intensified with Toby joining the team." Reflecting on his appointment, Mr Balazs said he was honoured and excited to have been selected to lead this rapidly evolving company "VIEW has a great culture, an increasingly broad capability in the market and a winning strategy that has enabled VIEW to grow strongly. Growing VIEW from the third-largest player is a challenge I accept with both confidence and determination," he said. "I am committed to continuing VIEW's momentum based on a differentiated offering, which is resonating strongly in the market — by offering lower fees for real estate agents to list property, and importantly, delivering consumers an exceptional level of real

estate industry information on a platform that is free and easy to use," Mr Balazs said. Mr Balazs joins VIEW as it continues to roll out the stimulating rebrand and new site experience. The next round of transformations to be released in Spring 2018 are focused on providing richer search metrics and making property research easier and more informative. VIEW's recent launch of Property-360, a Price Estimate tool for over 13 million properties across Australia, offers agents and consumers the ability to track the value of a residence and instantly calculate its estimated price. The feature allows users to adjust the value of a residence by adding bedrooms, bathrooms or car spaces. The rebrand also includes an editorial partnership with Independent Media Publishers (IMP) including Star News Group that now al-

lows view.com.au to provide up-to-date property insights and commentary that are invaluable to those living in regional areas as well as property developers. In 2018, VIEW maintains a nimble and disruptive culture designed to keep pace with a rapidly changing real estate market. About VIEW.com.au Launched in 2001, realestateVIEW.com.au quickly became one of Australia's leading online property platforms, simplifying the process of buying, renting and selling property. In August 2017, the company rebranded to view. com.au to better reflect its evolving values and goals - namely that every single home buyer is entitled access to free property data. VIEW are now your property insights experts, and with the development of their Property Price Estimate tool, home buyers can access up-to-date property data about their home, as well as every other address in Australia.

Apology sought for victims, as board resigns By Derek Schlennstedt Some in positions of power at Puffing Billy Railway and other Victorian railway groups have protected reputations at the expense of sexual abuse victims, according to Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass. Tabling her 'Investigation into child sex offender Robert Whitehead's involvement with Puffing Billy and other railway bodies', in the Victorian Parliament on 25 June, Ms Glass described the failures of people in authority as 'monumental'. The report centres on Robert Whitehead, a convicted sex offender who was a volunteer at Puffing Billy from 1961 until 1990. Whitehead died in prison in 2015. He was convicted of sexually abusing six boys.

Former CEO John Robinson with Engine 6A. 173368 Picture: ROB CAREW Whitehead was first convicted of a child sex offence in 1959; though he returned to his job on the Victorian Government railway after being released from jail in 1960.

"Whitehead was a life-long offender whose abuse was facilitated by the wilful blindness, indifference or ineptitude of a succession of organisations from Victorian Railways to Puffing Billy," Ms Glass said. "The actions, or inaction of people in positions of authority, who should have known better, is inexcusable."We do not know, and will never know, how many children Whitehead abused." Ms Glass said through Whitehead's 30-year involvement with Puffing Billy, he had unrestricted access to children. She said that some members of the Puffing Billy Board were aware of allegations that he was abusing children. "In 1985, members of the board knew that Whitehead was under police investigation for child sexual offences, yet he was not removed

Employment V

until 1991," Ms Glass said. "They failed to act on complaints, or even record contacts; in one notable case punishing the 17-year-old victim by banning him from Puffing Billy." Ms Glass made nine recommendations in total, all of which have been accepted by the Victorian Government, including an official apology to the victims. Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, confirmed "the Victorian Government accepts the report's recommendations in full" and said they have accepted the resignation of all members of Emerald Tourist Railway Board, including long-time Puffing Billy CEO John Robinson. "It should never have happened and thanks to this report, and the actions we will take, it never will again," Mr Eren said.

Top teams hard to separate By Cameron Hutchison Round 9 was played in cold, slippery and sometimes foggy conditions. There were some surprises with the wins and losses on Saturday and there is now a log jam in the Division 1 competition with the top 5 sides all sitting on six wins at the halfway mark of the season. Division 2 sees Seville take top spot by percentage after Yarra Glen's first loss for the season. The winners in senior football: Wandin, Healesville, Monbulk, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Alexandra, Gembrook-Cockatoo, Seville and Yarra Junction. A Grade netball winners: Healesville, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin, Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Kinglake. Division 1 Seniors Football Wandin 10.7.67 d Emerald 6.18.54 Wandin share top spot but are fourth on percentage after a win over Emerald. Emerald were chasing tail all day as Wandin got off to a handy start but only had a slim lead of three points at quarter time. They kicked away in the second, with 6 goals to 1, and went into the main break 32 points up. Emerald won the third quarter, kicking 3.1 to 1.5, but the margin was still 20 points. Emerald peppered the goals in the last with 1.7 to 1 goal straight and really should have had the game won, but wastefulness in front of goal cost them in the end. Wandin Best: S. Wettenhall (3 goals), B. Harvey (1 goal), T. Leech-Hines, P. Hodgett, P. Bruzzese, J. Byrne Emerald Best: D. Edwards, S. Semmens (1 goal), J. Rich (1 goal), B. Wood, A. Quirk (1 goal), N. Jansen (2 goals) Healesville 10.17.77 d Upwey-Tecoma 6.4.40 Healesville are also equal first, but fifth on percentage after a surprising win over UpweyTecoma. Healesville started well, kicking 4.5 to 2.2 in the first to set up a handy lead by 15 points. Upwey won the second quarter, just, and reduced the margin at the main break to 13 points. Healesville turned on the burners a bit in the third, kicking 4.2 to 1.1 and the margin was now looking tough for Upwey. Healesville peppered the goals in the last, but accuracy plagued them, and they were still able to come away with the win by 37 points. Healesville Best: J. Nugent, L. Daly, J. RoeDuggan (2 goals), D. Plozza, A. Fraraccio, B. Murphy Upwey-Tecoma Best: W. Duncan, B. Bantoft, S. Waters, B. Neil, S. Dawson, D. Bell Monbulk 13.18.96 d Belgrave 7.6.48 Monbulk sit one win out of the five after a solid performance against Belgrave. Monbulk were in control from the outset and had a big lead by 33 points at quarter time. Belgrave won the second quarter, kicking 3.2 to 1.3 and reduced the margin to 22 points. Monbulk jumped into action in the third, with 5.6 to 2.1 to put the game out of Belgrave's reach. A lacklustre last quarter, but Belgrave still won it but the game was all Monbulk's. Monbulk Best: S. Williams (2 goals), N. Wall, M. Langworthy (1 goal), P. Barge (3 goals), N. McPherson, K. Linde Belgrave Best: T. Stubley, J. McDermott (1 goal), J. Marshall, N. Somervaille (1 goal), C. Power, L. Caton-Thomas Olinda Ferny Creek 19.21.135 d Warburton Millgrove 3.7.25 Olinda have bounced back after a 110-point win over Warburton and are back on top of the ladder by percentage. They were a bit wasteful in front of goal in the first, but had a lead of 22 points at quarter time. They increased that lead to 37 points at half-time. A big 7-goal to 1 third quarter, as heavy fog set in, and the margin had blown out to 73 points which was well out of reach for Warburton. A final 5.5 to 1 behind and the final siren was Warburton's friend at the end of the day. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: D. Troutman (2 goals), M. Wright (6 goals), B. Currie, M. Hottes, D. Noorda, L. Mount Evelyn could only manage 3 behinds in the third to Woori's 4.9 and it was all over. It was goal for goal in the last but to no avail for the Mounters. Woori Yallock Best: E. Alexandra got early honours, kicking 4.4 to 2.2 in the first and a lead of 14 points. Kinglake kicked 6.4 to 2.4 in the second to swing the lead in their favour by 10 points at half-time. Alexandra found some extra legs in the third, kicking 7.2 to 5.2 and the score was now Alexandra's by 2 points. It was a tight, tough last quarter but Alexandra just managed to hang on.

Gembrook got the early break and led by 15 points at quarter time. Four goals to 3 in the second and Gembrook increased their lead to 19 points at half-time. Powelltown held Gembrook goalless in the third and kicked two goals themselves to reduce the margin to 8 points at the final change. now sit atop of the ladder by percentage after a very big win. Seville were in control from the outset and have kicked the highest score to date in this year's competition. Parker Yarra Junction 17.7.109 d Yarra Glen 8.10.58 In what some would say was the major upset of the day was the awesome effort made by Yarra Junction to inflict Yarra Glen's first defeat of the season and drop them to second on the ladder albeit by percentage. Yarra Junction kicked 6 goals to 2 in the first and went into the second quarter with a 25-point lead. Both teams tightened things up in the second and only kicked 2 each so it was still game on at half time. Yarra Junction kicked 5.1 to a wasteful Yarra Glen's 4.5 to be up by 25 points at the last change. Yarra Glen was still in with a show until the Eagles outclassed and outplayed them holding them scoreless in the last but still managed to kick 4.2 themselves. Yarra Junction Best: C. Hoare, D. 'Snow' worries here By John Wood The snow that had blanketed Woods Point early in the week had gone in time for the Tear Arse Gully Championships at the Gun Club. Sunday was overcast but clear with a real quite a winter nip in the air. In the Eye Opener, Phillip Desmond and Daniel Chinn took the honours while the A Grade cash was spread between Allan Kidd, Andrew Estcourt, Peter West and Laurie Poile. Chuck Lay and Greg Shahin won B Grade and C Grade respectively with all winners returning 15/15 scores. The first of the Championships was 30 targets Double Barrel sponsored by Box & Tania Taylor of the Woods Point Commercial Hotel. Kaylene Estcourt and Peter West came back to the clubhouse with perfect 30/30 scores and a short shoot off saw Kaylene proudly wearing the winner's sash with 33/33. In the grades: Trevor Ewert and Trevor Newman shot off for AA with Ewert successful, 29/31, to Newman 28/31. West's 30/30 was enough for A Grade 1st with Andrew Estcourt 2nd, 45/47, after a long shoot-off against Marty McLaughlin, Allan Kidd, Laurie Poile and Ken Skinner. Kaylene Estcourt won B Grade with 30/30, Steven Bedggood 2nd 28/30. In C Grade, Kirsten Chinn took the honours, 28/30, from Tom Apps 27/30 in 2nd place. After a hearty warming lunch, the club launched into a 20 target Handicap Championship. Kirsten Chinn, Tom Apps, Laurie Poile, Andrew Estcourt and Trever Newman all came in with 19/20 scores and after a shoot off Estcourt won the sash 31/32, from Poile 30/32, Newman 28/30 and Chinn 21/23 taking the minor places The last event, a 15 pair Auto & Driven, with one target thrown away from the shooter from

Warburton golf results By Ron Hottes Wednesday 20 June: Par: Par is a much-misunderstood competition. Some players enjoy it; some loath it! It all depends how you 'manage' your given handicap! On this day, 'Old Man River', Alan Johnston, managed it beautifully, for a +3, in difficult conditions (very cold morning, wet underfoot, no run on the fairways - is that enough?) Well done, Alan. The r/up, on +1, was President Hall, one of A.J's regular playing partners. Balls extended to -1 - so your inconsistent scribe scored one! NTPs went to Trev Porter (1st), Peter Bell (9th) and to A.J. on the 15th (A great day's work, Johnno!) Saturday 23 June: Alan Chapman Memorial trophy (two-person Aggregate Stableford): The winners were Steve Wyatt and Sam Dennis, who combined well for a total 70 points. R/ up were President Hall and Secretary Barratt, also on 70, which means Steve and Sam won on a c/back! Balls went to 65, which shows how challenging the course is at the moment. NTP winners were Steuart Hawke on both the 3rd & the 12th, Jason Kennedy, also a dual winner, on the 9th and the 12th, with brother Sean grabbing the 15th!

From left are Trevor Ewert (sponsor), Allan Kidd, Kaylene Estcourt and Andrew Estcourt 182199 the main trap and one target thrown diagonally across the field be another trap. Not easy but great fun! Allan Kidd showed good form to take the Championship sash outright, 25/30, Phillip Desmond a close 2nd, 23/30. A short shoot off saw Ewert take 3rd prize, 30/35, Ken Skinner 4th 29/35. Allan Kidd completed a good day by taking the High Gun sash with a final 69/80 on a typi-

cal difficult but fun day of shooting. Anne Skinner prepared a great lunch and arvo tea and big pot of pea and ham soup drove the outside chill away. Next shoot at the Point is the Matlock Championships on Sunday 22 July with the main event featuring Geoff Hill's USA made silver and gold belt buckles. See you there (snow permitting).
