EXPLORE OUTDOORS FOR THE HOLS BY HOLLIE HARRIS The return of the popular eco-hunt adventure and a Creatures of the Night workshop program are just some of the action-packed activities planned for these school holidays across the Sunshine Coast. A range of local artists will host workshops for kids and adults alike to shine a light on Creatures of the Night from July 2-15 at three local nature reserves. From print-making to creating pretend habitat for nocturnal animals and mobiles inspired by glowing fungi, these creative workshops offer everyone from kids to adults the opportunity to unlock their inner artist. If you’re looking for an exciting challenge where ‘I-spy’ meets sci-fi, grab your walking shoes and your phone or tablet and join in the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Eco-Hunt for your chance to win some great prizes. Explore the wetlands and snap pictures of as many birds, butterflies,
insects, crabs and other animals living at the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary as you can. Download the QuestaGame app, submit your sightings and you’ll receive expert feedback and points for your sightings based on their rarity. Prizes including vouchers from Whites IGA in Bli Bli and Rivershore Resort will go to the highest overall score and the eco-hunter who snaps the best find in the sanctuary, while every eco-hunter who submits more than three sightings from the Maroochy Wetlands will go into the draw to win a family pass for Maroochy Nature Cruises. Another family pass will go to the person who receives the highest score for correctly identifying their sightings. Eco-hunters who are keen for a sweet school holiday treat can even swing by McMartin’s Farm next door to the wetlands and pick some tasty strawberries. DOCTORS IN JOINT CANNABIS SYMPOSIUM
PARDON CASE ADJOURNED
BY MARGARET MACCOLL
Noosa Councillor Frank James Pardon said he was looking forward to his day in court, but it didn't happen at his scheduled trial on Monday with the case adjourned for mention in August. Cr Pardon appeared in Maroochydore District Court on Monday facing charges of indecent treatment of children under 16 years. The court heard matters had come to light requiring investigation and both parties were in agreement on the application for an adjournment. ●

Adam said the drug had been used for cancer patients, in palliative care, for pain management, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. The Public Health (Medicinal Cannabis) Act 2016 was passed by Queensland Parliament on 12 October 2016 and commenced on 1 March 2017. The Act creates a regulatory framework to allow medicinal cannabis products to be prescribed and dispensed to patients in Queensland. Any cannabis used outside of the regulatory framework is illegal. Medifarm is one of only four
Australian companies and the only private firm to be licensed to produce medical cannabis by the federal government's Office of Drug Control. Adam said it was a personal experience that drove him to establish the business. He said a friend's son suffered an aggressive cancer which claimed his life. His parents twice took him to Byron Bay where they accessed illegal cannabis because "it helped" him. "I thought when the law changes I have to help," he said. Medifarm on the Sunshine Coast is leading the way in bringing medical cannabis to Australians and has now organised a symposium with the University of the Sunshine Coast to assist doctors in the use of the product. Having partnered with world leaders in the industry, Tikun Olam, an Israeli company which has been producing medical cannabis for more than a decade, Medifarm will benefit from their knowledge and expertise in producing its product locally. Medifarm will use Israeli strains of the plant as it begins growing its own plants under strict security and controlled conditions. Within its compound under the one roof production will progress from plant cutting to prescribed product by December. Medifarm director Adam Benjamin said medical cannabis could be polarising with some people considering it a medicine and others regarding it as a recreational drug. "You don't smoke this," he said. "You don't get high. This is another tool in a doctor's bag." With this in mind the doctors' symposium aims to inform doctors about the legislative requirements,

COVER STORY
A MAN OF TRADITION BY RON LANE
I
f there has ever been a sport that one could consider as being truly symbolic of our early Australian way of life it would have to be the sport of woodchopping; an Australian with an axe or saw chopping his way through timber. In the early 1870s and even before, it was indeed a common sight. The reasons were many and varied; to clear land for farming, building cottages for families, to supply timber for bridges and industry; and in many cases it was simply to earn a living. Little did they realise that their tools of trade would one day become the major utensils in the sport of woodchopping; a sport that would spread to such places as New Zealand, Canada, USA, Spain, Finland and Germany. For the Campbell family, now living in Noosaville, their involvement with the saw
and the axe has been inherited from their ancestors who were part of the pioneering history of Maleny. At a recent family reunion to mark the centenary of the family involvement in the district, Phil Campbell said, ''My grandfather and uncles worked in the Maleny region cutting and clearing scrub and my grandfather built a slab house that was still there when we had our family reunion." Now in 2018 it is has been Phil's inherited expertise with the axe and saw that has seen him win World Australian and State championships in the tough and highly competitive sport of woodchopping; and now standing by his side is son Dean who has also won medals at world and national titles. "It is good to win these titles but the greatest feeling," said Phil "was when Dean and I, father and son, were both selected together in the Australian team." Where and when did the sport of woodchopping come into being? "It all
started in Tasmania," said Phil, "way back about 1870 and it took off from there and it spread not only throughout Australia but also overseas. Legend has it," he added with a laugh, "that the challenge of cutting faster than another man started in Tasmania over a beer when one challenged another stating that he could cut through a log faster than his drinking partner; a wager was made and so it began." It was in 1870 in the town of Sprent on the North West Coast of Tasmania that the first competition was held; and from then through to 1890 unofficial contests were conducted and these were to succeed despite not having a firm and accepted set of rules. It wasn't until the 13 June at Latrobe in Tasmania that a gentleman by the name of H.R.Nichols established the first Australian Axemans Association. As a result of this an official set of rules were also written and accepted. Following this in 1891 the first World
Titles were conducted in Latrobe. This then became an annual event with the venues being held in pre-determined venues in Australia and New Zealand. Now 128 years later it is in this truly iconic Australian sport that Phil Campbell and his son Dean have indeed made sporting history. Born in Biggiden in 1954 in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, Phil was raised on the family farm on which a citrus orchard grew and cattle grazed. In Phil's infant years his father passed away and the job of running the farm passed on to his elder brothers. Phils educated started at a small one teacher country school. Following this he attended the Biggiden High School and it was during this time that as a 15 yr. old student he attended a country show with his older brother Jeff and took part in his first wood chop event- the under hand cut.

He then went on to complete his education with a short time as a boarder at the Christian Brothers College in Gympie. "During my early years I had developed a real love of rugby league and that was one reason I wanted to attend the Gympie Brothers. One of my fondest memories of that time was the inter college games against Gympie State High. The two annual games were reputed to be the best games of the year in Gympie League." In 1970 after finishing high school, Phil shifted to Brisbane where he commenced an apprenticeship as a carpenter with E.W.Watts. While there he continued his love of football playing for Brisbane Brothers in u/18 and u/21. At the completion of his apprenticeship he travelled to Perth to attend the wedding of his brother Lindsay. While in Perth everything seemed to fall into place. He joined the North Beach Rugby League Club, then along with his elder brother Lindsay he started wood chopping in earnest; but most important of all met a lady named Dale-the lady who was to become his wife. Following a four year stint in Perth Phil and Dale, whose relationship had developed, embarked on a fourteen month trip working around Europe. On their return to Perth they packed Dales car and drove across the Nullabore Plains back to Brisbane, where once again Phil took up with his old employer E.W.Watts. "During the next three years we married. Also during this time I started to do some serious chopping and was really getting keen. However Dale's sister was getting married in Perth so we returned and following the wedding I accepted a job as a builder and supervisor in the Kimberleys. We stayed six years and during this time we started our family with a daughter Cara, then twins Dean and Kelly." On returning to Queensland they settled in Cooroy. Phil started working as a builder and recommencing his passion for competition, started chopping and sawing in all major country and Brisbane shows. As a result of his success in 1990 he made the state team for Tasmania contesting his best discipline, the cross cut saw event. This was followed by Sydney shows and other major events in country areas; and his achievements began to attract attention. Then in 2000 he was picked in the Australian team and travelling to New Zealand, won the World Title contesting the Single Sawing Event. For Phil this was just the start in an illustrious career. In 2013 and 2016 he was appointed Captain/ Manager of the Australian Teams to New Zealand. Also in 2013 he went to Stuttgart in Germany with the Australian team to contest the World
Titles. "It was here that for the first time we competed indoors in a vast stadium: all went well for we came home with a bronze medal in the team event," said Phil. Meanwhile down through the years, his son Dean had been running around, (starting at age four) swinging a toy wooden axe made by his proud father. This simple toy was definitely the start of things to come. "A lot of choppers made wooden axes for their kids," said Phil. "Then when they were older and responsible they could start using a tomahawk." For Dean and sisters Cara and Kelly their education was obtained at the Good Shepard Lutheran College in Noosaville. On leavings school at 17 Dean became apprenticed to his father as a carpenter working in the Cooroy district. However it was while studying at college (aged 13) that he became serious about the sport of woodchopping. When this became apparent his famous father stepped in as coach. Like his father he had also developed a love of rugby league and spent several seasons playing for Noosa Pirates; but it was
always the sport of the axe and the saw that was upmost in his mind. "I was 13 when I had my first competition, chopping in the Underhand Event," said Dean. "I had always been aware of our long history of cutters: then as I grew older I started cutting with dad in the cross cut saw events, something I was very proud of. Then when I reached the u/21 division I was picked in the Australian team; a position I was to hold for some time. It was just so unreal." However despite being picked for Australia in the juniors, both Dean and his father Phil agree that the proudest moment of both their careers came in 2008. " It was in that year that we made Australian history by being, not only the third father and son combination to make the Australian team together, but while competing for our country at the World Titles in Sydney in the Double Handed Cross Cut Event, we finished second thus winning the silver medal for our country. It is the sort of thing that you just can't describe," said Dean
"In our sport the prize money is small compared to others and our saws and axes," said Phil, "are not cheap. For example a big saw costs $3,5OO and a good axe (known as a racing axe) $600 and at present we have about 10 saws and 50 axes; gear which we have used over the years. But it's a great sport with lots of travel and good mates. At present there are some 2000 competitors in Australia ranging from 13 to 78 and also juvenile 6 to 13." It is now 26 years since Phil Campbell (who is still a member of the Queensland team) took office as the Chief Steward of the Nambour show, a country show which in his words is one of Queenslands best. With country shows being the backbone of the woodchopping competition, not only the achievements of this father and son combination, but also their input into this iconic Australian sport, should be acknowledged and respected by all who claim to be proud Australians. Happy to say that Phil Campbell and son Dean are athletes of international repute and proudlythey are our people. â—?

CONSTRUCTION BEGINNING BY MARGARET MACCOLL Families from St Andrew's College Peregian Springs can stop asking "when is the pool coming?" after the first sod was turned on its $12million Aquatic Centre last Friday. College Principal Reverend Chris Ivey said the new centre, which is expected to be completed in August 2019, will cut the 40 minute travel time to swim lessons at Noosa Aquatic Centre and be a facility for the whole community. "Younger ones will learn to swim instead in our purpose-built smaller pool, while older students will train and compete in swimming competitions and water polo in the 52mx 25m main pool," he said. "Our own pool will strengthen the opportunities and quality of the swim program and other aquatic experiences we can offer, with a quick transition between the school day and training. "We will also host local, regional and interstate competitions at our state-ofthe-art facility which will be a source of excitement and pride for the whole community." The college community has raised $1m to enable construction to commence and aims to source the remainder of costs from college loans, government grants, proceeds from the annual fair, fundraising events and community donations. St Andrew's graduate and Rio Olympian Jake Packard encouraged

"Swimming has been my life from an early age but it was St Andrew's, along with a supportive scholarship program, that helped me reach my dreams of making the Olympic team," he said. "Having an Aquatic Centre at the College would have further enhanced this; as a student I could have attended training at the campus before school." HILUX ROLLOVER TAKES OUT TREE Three men all aged in their late 20s were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital on last week after the Toyota Hilux they were travelling in rolled on the corner Solway Drive and Sunshine Beach Road, Sunshine Beach. Noosa senior sergeant Ben Carroll said a 10m tree was snapped off at the base where the vehicle hit it and the northbound lane closed to traffic. Snr sgt Carroll said there was no one in the vehicle when police arrived but the driver and two passengers were soon located at a bus stop receiving treatment from Queensland Ambulance officers. The driver provided a blood sample for analysis and police are investigating whether excessive speed was involved in the accident. The three men suffered non-life threatening injuries. Large horde seized in drug bust Police raided 14 homes across Noosa, Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona this month and laid 40 charges against about 15 offenders. Noosa Police were joined in the twoday operation by the CIB, Child Protection Investigation Unit, Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad, Brisbane drug dogs and police from Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona. Noosa snr sgt Ben Carroll said police seized 1kg cannabis, 22gm cocaine, 26gm MDMA (ecstasy), 17gm methamphetamine, more than 100 Xanax tablets and $2000 in cash. Charges laid included possession, supply and production of a dangerous drug and possessing the proceeds of crime. ●

NEWS HOSPITAL TRANSPORT VITAL
SUPPORT SERVICES SHINE Federal Government funding of $3.8m will enable Noosa Council's Community Support (NCS) to continue delivery of support services to eligible over-65-yearold residents until 30 June, 2020. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said over the past year NCS had provided more than 30,000 services such as personal care, respite, transport, allied health and home maintenance requests more than 30,000 times. "The Federal Government's decision
to renew our funding for another two years is most welcome," he said. "I am sure the continuation of this important community service will provide some peace of mind to NCS's many clients and their carers." The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides more than 70% of Noosa Community Support's annual funding. With further funding from the State to cover services for under-65s, plus
the Home Assist Secure Program, NCS meets the needs of more than 6000 frail and aged clients annually. Noosa Council has been delivering frail and aged care services to the community for over 20 years. Some of the other services NCS offers include counselling/support, information and advocacy, centre-based day care and carer support. For more information, visit www. noosacommunitysupport.com.au â—?
The Kidney Support Network will be able to deliver about 12 patients from Cooroy to Caloundra to renal dialysis three times a week with federal government funding of $9000 assisting the purchase of a second transport vehicle. The network's Sunshine Coast branch coordinator Kathy Rayner said the service relied on the proceeds from two op shops in Maroochydore and Currimundi to held cover fuel costs for the volunteer transport service which ferried patients to various hospitals across the region. "We take a lot of care of our patients; sometimes we spoil them a bit but that's how we like to do it," she said. "Kidney disease is tough and we want to take some of the burden off them so they don't have to drive." Kathy said there were so many kidney patients across the coast they could do with a fleet of vehicles. Renal patients require regular dialysis to filter their blood with each treatment taking about five hours. Fairfax MP Ted O'Brien said without the volunteer service, kidney patients would have to drive themselves to and from those hospital appointments which was not ideal. "Many patients simply can't drive after having their blood filtered; their blood pressure is low, they might not be co-ordinated or they might have a bleed," he said. "Having a reliable transport service reduces the burden on people who may otherwise struggle to arrange lifts with friends and family to cover so many weekly appointments." â—?

"There's enough people out there who want to be engaged," he said. He said measures being implemented to reduce the sediment flow into waterways included working with landowners, rehabilitating vulnerable areas and looking at options to slow flood waters such as levies. Controlling invasive weeds such as cat's claw and dealing with pasture die back were also challenges in the region. For more information visit https:// noosalandcare.org/ ●
Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath announced Glen Cash QC will take up his appointment at Maroochydore District Court on July 2. Glen Cash QC has been employed in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Queensland since 1992, and has been a Crown Prosecutor since 2001, successfully prosecuting a series of murder, manslaughter, rape, drug trafficking and child sex offender cases. Glen Cash QC worked on the Daniel Morcombe murder trial and in Brett Cowan’s subsequent unsuccessful attempts to appeal that sentence; he prosecuted Andrew Michael Burke for the murder of pregnant woman Joan Ryther in Logan in 2013; and ran the successful case against Steven Fennell for the murder of 85-year-old Liselotte
Watson on Macleay Island in 2012. He completed his Bachelor of Laws at QUT in 1992, was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court in 1999 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2015. ●
SHARK DETERRENT FUNDING INCREASED The state government added an additional $731,000 per annum to the Shark Control Program increasing it to $16.1m over four years. Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said 85 of Queensland’s most popular beaches were protected by nets or drumlines and the program had been supported by successive governments since 1962. “While we continue to monitor emerging technology, the safety of locals and both domestic and international visitors to our beaches is paramount,” he said. “The safety of humans is the priority and any moves to remove the protections on our beaches will place lives at risk.” ●
COMMUNITY GROUPS GAIN FINANCIAL BOOST Council has approved more than $380,000 in community grants to help support a wide range of community groups. The latest Community Grants project round supports more than 20 recipients across four categories - programs, events, equipment and infrastructure. Three-year funding agreements will also help those groups with hall and sport fields to maintain. ●

Lidar surveying, revegetating, weeding and engaging landowners are the four ways in which the Keeping It in Kin Kin project is working to achieve its aim to keep the soil in the top of the catchment and not dump it into the Noosa River, Noosa and District Landcare general manager Phil Moran said. Speaking at Noosa Parks Association's Friday forum Phil told the gathering the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation project involved a collaborative approach from groups including Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA), NPA, Country Noosa and Noosa and District Landcare. Mr Moran said while Noosa River water quality rated very well, high levels of nitrogen had been detected in Lake Cootharaba which collect in the lake and had been attributed to sediment run off accumulating throughout European occupation. Annually about 280 tons of sediment flows into Noosa River while about 3840 tons of sediment ends up in Kin Kin creek, he said. Lidar surveying has been conducted from an airplane using laser light which is bounced off the topography and can be analysed to show areas of erosion and soil accumulation. From this erosion hot spots have been identified. Mr Moran said factors to consider

THE LOWDOWN
A QUESTION OF TRANSPARENCY There was enthusiastic debate last Thursday evening when Noosa Council took its Ordinary Meeting to Kin Kin. During the meeting councillors moved a motion to place Council's General Committee meeting's "live record meeting notes" on its website but to exempt all committee meetings from recording minutes. The motion enables Council to comply with sections 272 (6) and 270 of the Local Government Regulation 2012, but a motion put forward by Cr Ingrid Jackson to record General Committee minutes and make them public was voted down. Mayor Tony Wellington said it was the majority view of council that mattered most not who voted when.Cr Ingrid Jackson said these meetings were where significant and controversial matters were debated, motions and amendments voted on, won and lost and merited the legality of formal minutes. However she publicly thanked councillors for taking the step towards increased transparency. In Council's General Committee meeting Cr Jackson provided examples of where other councils had introduced greater transparency measures than those adopted by Noosa Council. "In South Australia it is legislated that all Councillor workshops and briefings are open to the public with full minutes available on Council websites," she said.
What's happening here?

Cr Brian Stockwell makes a comment. "In Victoria it is legislated that records of all Councillor workshops are reported at Council meetings and included in the Council minutes. "Councils across Australia including in Queensland are live streaming meetings and making recordings available on Council websites. Not here. "Many councils in Queensland and around Australia invite public questions at Council meetings and record questions and answers in their minutes. Not here. "There's so much more we could be doing to make our Council more transparent and accountable to the public." ●

Council was not the lead power in mining rights which is under the control of the state government he doubted anyone would want to see mining in our hinterland. A Noosa resident Djeylan has lost a necklace her late husband had specially made for her and is hoping someone may find it and return the treasured item. Djeylan parked her car last week near the Boathouse Restaurant and walked along Gympie Terrace toward the river mouth only discovering on her return to the car that her necklace was missing. The silver necklace which contains her name spelt in Chinese letters was made in Singapore in the 1980s while the couple were living there. "From the moment he put it around my neck I wore it continuously," she said. Djeylan said her husband passed away in 2011 and three months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She stopped wearing the necklace during her treatment but was again wearing it despite a loose catch she "kept meaning to have fixed". If anyone finds the necklace please contact Noosa Today on 5455 6946. ●

YOU CAN COUNT ON THE SALVOS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Once a month the Salvation Army at Noosaville provides a free Come and Meet Each Other (CAMEO) lunch for people in the area. The home cooked meal is a welcome treat to people struggling with the rising costs of living and provides a rare opportunity for many to socialize. On average about 100 go along. Last Tuesday it was a full room of people who went along to enjoy a lunch of curry and rice. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton also attended and took the opportunity to discuss the "huge problem" of affordable housing in the area. She said nine affordable units were being built in Tewantin, which was one step forward in addressing the problem. Also occurring on the Sunshine Coast region is a pilot program being run by Better Housing Together to organise share units for women aged over 55 years who as a group are identified as among the most in need, she said. The lunch is just one of many services the Salvation Army is providing to assist an increasing number of people in need in the area. Spokeswoman Sharne Brennan said each week through their Connect service the organization provided food, blankets, breakfast and a place to just sit and talk for an average of 35 people aged from their mid 20s to 50s.
Gayle Markrow and Carolyn Parks.
Melissa and Dorothy Schulze and Melissa Williams. "The cost of living is so high. We have a lot of homeless. They just can't afford the rent," she said. "We have some regulars and each week there are different people." Sharne also organisers activities for the Connect group with art and fishing days on the agenda. Other programs run by the organization include a successful five-week SCILs program for children at risk of dropping out
of school for a variety of reasons. Sharne said their programs received funding from Salvation Army op shops and family stores and donations from the Red Shield Appeal and Ozharvest assisted them with food. LETTERS TAX CUTS Yes, with concern for her “battlers”, the $10 tax cut prompted One Notion Senator to vote with Good Guv’mint. On a salary of more than $200,000, perhaps the senator, who “won’t notice” her $7000 tax cut could donate it to those who aren’t so blind? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach
TRANSPARENT OR TRANSLUCENT? We applaud Cr Ingrid Jackson’s crusade to end Noosa Council’s “translucent“ approach to council meetings with their non-disclosure of discussions and decisions. Rate-paying residents deserve to know what the council is discussing, where ratepayers’ money is being spent and why, and if council decisions are being made for the shire and not for a selfish few and tourist-only benefit. Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy
SCOOTER DRIVERS REINED IN What a relief! It was wonderful news last week to hear that the authorities have made the long-awaited decision to restrict the speed of those irresponsible mobility scooter drivers from 10 km/h to 6 km/h, (and I would suggest they wear a seat belt and helmet too!). I am sure that the community will feel so much safer now knowing that they won’t have to worry about those hooligans speeding and terrorising pedestrians. On a personal note, it is very reassuring that every time I jump in my supercharged muscle car, I won’t have to worry anymore about those speed maniacs sneaking up on me at every intersection. Commonsense has prevailed, what a relief... Dom Massoni, Verrierdale
TOWER REJECTION IGNORED The Sunshine Coast Council has very quietly approved the application to erect a 50-metre NBN Tower in Weyba Downs, despite the seemingly overwhelming number of residents that don’t want it. So quiet in fact that despite the decision being made on 4 June, residents still have not been officially notified by council by mail. On 5 June “submitters” of the Doonan application for an NBN Tower were notified by mail of council's rejection of their application. The next day Sunshine Coast newspapers reported council’s Doonan NBN tower rejec-

tion citing; “In particular, the Doonan proposal was considered to be inconsistent with the rural residential zoning of the site and surrounding area, and, is considered likely to result in a significant adverse impact on the visual amenity of adjoining and surrounding residential properties.” Trying to find out what the Weyba Downs decision was, I emailed Council on 7 June. They responded via email on 13 June - a week later, to inform me that the application had been approved. Council’s failure to inform residents of their decision is as unfathomable as their decision to grant the application. How the same finding that applied to the rejection of the Doonan tower doesn’t apply to Weyba Downs is completely nonsensical, and either points to council looking for an ‘easy-out’ for years of complaints of poor telecommunications in the Weyba Downs area (despite the fact this third-rate tower solution is very unlikely to resolve that), or that the Sunshine Coast Council is making some kind of sick payback to residents for its “Noosa on Weyba” plans being scuttled. Either way, the secrecy surrounding their decision, the fact that it should have been rejected on the same grounds as the Doonan NBN tower, and that the 74 of 75 submissions to council asking that they reject NBN Aurecon’s application for an NBN tower in Weyba Downs has been ignored, says much about the way the Sunshine Coast Council treats its northern border suburbs - with contempt. Peter Welman, Weyba Downs
SHORTCUT AN ALTERNATE ROUTE Our hard-working MP, Sandy Bolton, has no doubt done her best to hurry up the doublelaning of Beckmans road, but from previous estimates, funding would have to be the biggest obstacle for the Qld government and TMR? However, until funding is secured and the work completed, many years from now, we’d like to know whether some of the schooltime traffic could bypass the congested Beckmans road roundabouts by a short road put in over the 100 metres of unused land between Bushland drive and Gateway drive, approximately opposite the bottom of Bunnings carpark? This would facilitate transport of Noosaville and St Teresa students from other areas into the schools, and also workers and students of other schools out of the Bushlands area without exacerbating the congestion on Beckmans road!
LENSCAPE
Beautiful one day, perfect the next ... The view from John Mikkelsen's top deck on Saturday. Lucky John! Please send in your landscape, wildlife or lifestyle shots to Lenscape at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. Also, an extra left-turning lane could be built from Beckmans road into Sea Eagle drive to ease congestion approaching the schools from the west. If these low-cost measures are successful, they could remain in place even until the bypass is built? Delays of 20 minutes along that road are unacceptable when there is a simple solution! Wayne Johnson, Tewantin
FOLLOW THE MONEY Why is it that the government is concerned about homelessness/housing shortage yet not tackling the real cause? If you drive for example through Gold Coast or Maroochydore about 7pm you will note lights on in less than one twelth of highrise buildings. That’s just the high-rise units, not houses. The majority of these residences aren’t used, they sit vacant. Why haven’t our councils got a register of how many residences are vacant all year round - year on year? This housing shortage is the ploy developers use to reason for more matchbox estates, which in turn destroys our wildlife habitat. In NSW a housing investment owner has to prove at least three months' residency annually. Why not in Qld? While our government brought in legis-
lation to hinder foreign investments (black money), a well-known economist admitted there are loopholes. Naturally so, those who create such legislation (the politically educated) are involved in the same black market money being spent offshore. That’s the sole purpose behind our whole globalisation concept. Black money derived from illegal means has been orchestrated within our banking system. The bankers are no different than our politicians. The conniving and manipulation is no different than their driving of cheap slave labour - forced immigration - all for the conglomerates. The average honest workers and our next generations are being denied access to a means of a simple honest living all because the big boys are having a party. Political party, that is regardless of denomination. It’s all the same party. We the voters are not invited as they fear exposure of the truth, making us seen as party poopers. Who would want to go to such a boring party anyway? Yet without the voter they wouldn’t have their bums on their regal thrones. Who’s the idiot? It’s time to pop their balloons. Jen Oakley, Noosa

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham resigned last week after more than six years of leading the Tourism Noosa team, and will be returning to the Queensland Club Industry to take up the role as General Manager of Frenchville Sports Club in Rockhampton. "Being part of a team that has produced new, award winning and innovative marketing campaigns resulting in an increase in high value interstate and international visitors which in turn has created and retained local jobs has been very rewarding," Mr Massingham said. "It was also very exciting to assist with the new focus on product development and the purchasing and successful running of the Noosa Food & Wine Festival on behalf of Tourism Noosa." MASTERPIECE OF GREEN DESIGN SET in the picturesque environment of Lake Doonella, this outstanding home has been created as a showcase of sustainable design. It has been constructed to an exceptional level of quality by one of the Coast's most awarded builders. The large, north-facing two-storey home in its treed environment, includes many innovative energy efficient features. High raked ceilings and the clever placement of windows and doors ensure excellence in passive design and crossflow ventilation. Two 5000 litre underground water tanks, highly efficient water-saving devices in the home, and LED and fluorescent lighting throughout means lower energy and water bills. Large, open-plan living areas downstairs feature beautiful, polished timber floors, and are perfectly orientated to capture the northern and eastern light. The thoughtfully-designed kitchen features top-of-the-range appliances, gas cook top and electric oven, stone benchtops, ample slide-out drawers, and most importantly, wide open floor spaces for ease of movement. A separate media room downstairs has been purpose built with projector and screen, ideal for movie nights and sporting shows. Upstairs is a luxurious master suite with its own balcony and beautifullyfinished ensuite with top quality inclusions. The home has been designed to
encourage outdoor living, with wide stacker doors opening onto large timber decks flowing from the barbecue area to the plunge pool. The outdoor decks provide ample room for the largest outdoor furniture, or for relaxing by the pool. Established trees and shrubs provide
privacy and require little maintenance. The entire estate is a beautiful, natural environment, with fabulous bird life, protected trees and wildlife reserves. Walking and bike-riding paths take in Lake Doonella and the nearby bushland. Highly-regarded primary and secondary schools are within close walking distance,

BRICKS 4 KIDZ combine the love of LEGO with a great day of school holiday fun and creative adventure. Their workshops generate an extraordinary atmosphere for students to build unique creations, play games, and experiment with LEGO bricks. Programs are built around model plans designed by engineers and architects, with exciting themes inspired by the likes of Minecraft and Star Wars. Combining fun with technical elements, they can cater for all interests with children able to build some of their favourite characters and learn new LEGO building techniques. Students will use technical project kits and LEGO power function motors to develop their critical thinking and spatial
intelligence as well as making amazing models that actually move. With technic/creator workshops, junior robotics with LEGO 'WeDo' and advanced robotics with Mindstorms EV3, there is something for everyone. The workshops take place at Maroochydore, Caloundra and Noosa with a full day of LEGO activity and active games sessions to break up the day. If you're too busy this holidays, BRICKS 4 KIDZ programs with LEGO also include birthday parties, OSHC Incursions, after-school classes and incursions, event activations and robotics classes. FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE
BY HOLLIE HARRIS
What makes a play 'good'? As with art and all creative endeavours, beauty can be in the eye of the beholder, but audiences seeing this year's Noosa Arts Theatre's One Act Play Festival will be a part of deciding what they think is the 'best' play as part of the Nancy Cato Audience Choice award. Every year, playwrights submit their plays to a panel of readers who decide on the top ten plays. There are a number of criteria that the writers must follow; time limits and the ability for their play to be performed on the Noosa Arts Stage by local performers so sadly, no Aida elephants or casts of thousands but a clever story, well told, that will entertain the audience is a sure fire winner. Words on a page can be be beautifully written but sometimes, that emotion does not translate to the stage, conversely, a script that seems dry and lifeless upon reading, in the hands of an experienced and insightful director, can blossom in a way that the writer had never imagined. It is a difficult thing for a writer to do sometimes, to hand over their 'baby' to a director and a cast, but that is part of the life of a play script. The beauty of the One Act Play Festival is that there is something for everyone in the audience, regardless of their likes and dislikes, their social filters and the style of the play. Sometimes, the best theatre you will see can be confronting and will challenge your beliefs, but is done so well that it makes you stop and think about what you have just seen and it stays with you long after the lights have gone down. The Festival is in its 41st year and is always a great night of entertainment but as an audience member, be prepared to be an active participant; your decision could launch the career of the winner. The season opens on 12th July and tickets are available now at Noosa
Arts Theatre. The three finalists are PREMEDITATED MISADVENTURE By Richard Harris Freya, adopted, discovers that her biological mother may have been murdered by her step-father, who then abandoned her. He is now living locally - with his sixth wife! He profited from the demise of all his previous wives who each dies by misadventure. Suspicious, Freya decides to investigate. OLD MAIDS by Ruth Tuxworth There are two old maids in this tale, Bridie, who falls into an unexpected, socially unacceptable love and her own "Old Maid" who tells the truth of it. Issues of family tension, abandonment, forbidden love, hypocrisy and natural justice all bubble beneath the brittle surface as the family prepares for a wedding. AN AUTUMN ROMANCE By Cerise de Gelder Ellie has a comfortable life. She is single and independent, shares her home with two cats and has a steady income as a writer on a successful Aussie Soap. Then, one night a handsome TV actor makes her an offer she really should refuse and things take a sinister turn in TV town. Tune in next week and all will be revealed.... or will it? Snow Patrol - Wildness
Us Against You (Beartown #2) by Fredrik Backman
Adrift Genre: June.
Seven years on from the release of their disappointing sixth album, Fallen Empires, Northern Irish pop rockers Snow Patrol return with the enjoyable ten-track effort, Wildness. Album opener Life On Earth is a sweeping alternative rock number encompassing everything that's made Snow Patrol a success. Empress mirrors Birmingham act Editors with its steady drum beat and electronic flourishes. What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get? features crooning vocals over a subtle piano line, simply put, it's the band's best ballad since the 2006 Martha Wainwright collaboration Set The Fire To The Third Bar. It's a welcome return to from Lightbody and his Snow Patrol bandmates. ●
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they hear that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. As the big match approaches, the not-so-innocent pranks and incidents between the communities pile up and their mutual contempt grows deeper. ●
Drama, Romance. In cinemas 28
Starring Shailene Woodley (Fault in Our Stars, Divergent films) and Sam Claflin (Me Before You, The Hunger Games films), ADRIFT is based on the inspiring true story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. ●

NEXT WEEK’S MUST SEE PERFORMANCE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Byron Bay singer-songwriter and one of Australia's most loved musicians, Pete Murray performs a stunning remix of his song Heartbeats, by ARIA-awarding winning Peter Mayes at Villa Noosa's The V Room Thursday 05 July. This remix of Heartbeats is subtle, and truly showcases Pete's diversity as an artist. Peter Mayes has expertly crafted understated percussion that percolates underneath Pete's vocal, and propels the track from heartfelt ballad into edgy new territory for Pete Murray. Fans are sure to love this rework of Heartbeats just as much as the original. "I'm excited to try and do things a little differently these days," Pete says, "this Heartbeats remix from Peter Mayes is a fun new thing for me and I'm stoked with how it came out." The video for the Heartbeats accurately reflects the song's lyrical theme through an honest and affecting lens. Directed by Corey Donaldson (Alex L'Estrange, Swilo, Sundown Jury), the clip is propelled by a narrative that highlights the thrill of young love, and the devastanoosatoday.com.au
tion that can ensue. Filmed in Pete's hometown of Byron Bay, the opening sequence of the headland is a recurring setting that powerfully and poignantly closes this stunningly evocative short film. It is moving, and beautiful, just as the song is. 2017 was a massive year for Pete, with his ARIA award-nominated album Camacho debuting at number 3 on the ARIA charts, and a packed-out 33 date album tour across Australia. With over one million album sales to his name, the quiet achiever of Australian music is committed to constantly growing as an artist and offering fans new and exciting material with each release. "I love acoustic tours as it's always great to strip songs back to their bare bones and do cool versions of them. This tour is going to be a lot of fun and will also be a three piece tour, something I have never done before in Australia," said Pete. Grab tickets before they sell out from www.villnoosa.com.au. The show is on Thursday 05 July, 7pm and are just $50 each. This is an 18+ event. ●

FIRE AND SEA BY HOLLIE HARRIS Yum cha, which translates as ’drinking tea’, becomes a whole meal when combined with dim sum (small plates). Many years of Brisbane Yum Cha hustle and bustle in my early twenties, I felt it was time to re-visit an old friend - Noosa style. My group (20-orso years older) were off to Yum Cha at Embassy XO. Embassy XO Restaurant Sunshine Beach is a modern Asian restaurant and wine bar in Sunshine Beach Village. Executive Head Chef James Wu offers an impressive menu of modern Asian dishes, which he refreshes each season. The cuisine weaves its way through the provinces of China and South East Asia, and is expertly balanced
in flavours, textures and exciting spices. Embassy XO is known as a ‘must do’ destination restaurant and I wanted to find out why. The quiet and intimate layout of the space, which has tables neatly spread out to embrace the beauty of the art piece; a full glass wall of swaying trees, distant ocean glimpses and loads of natural light. You won’t get any staff rolling stacks of dim sum to your table here; rather it’s all about comfortable decadence, with a carefully curated la carte menu, stunning wine list, plus a special tea menu. We were greeted by Sally Groult’s enthusiastic and extensive knowledge about the restaurants vision, thoughtful menus and world-class wines. With so many

Kung Po chicken ribs; delicate, succulent and fun. eye-popping menu options, we trusted the experts and went for the $38 Yum Cha Banquet. Sally’s passion and knowledge for wine matching is contagious and I couldn’t help but get swept up in talk of primary fruits, full bodied, acidity, balance and boldness. Embassy XO is also home to their independently owned bottle shops filled with fine wines and boutique beers and the team have thoughtfully curated a wine suggestions list to best bring out the flavours of the food as you progress along the banquet menu. A very smart idea - we were grateful to have all the decisions made for us! The three wines have been selected to with a purpose in mind. Starting off with a sparkling to cleanse the palette, next, a Gewurztraminer bold enough to hold its own against spicy and sweet flavours throughout the first half of your banquet and then a lighter selection to compliment earthy and delicate flavours of the final few dishes. An introduction to wine matching was a lovely bonus to the experience, so we chose all three suggestions to add on to our Banquet. We began with Embassy XO’s famous pork sandwiches; a powerful punch of meltin -your-mouth delight of crispy, salty, pork belly encased in fluffy clouds of delicate. They are a accompanied by the buttery, nutty flavours of endamame drenched in decadently toasted Miso butter. We slowly worked our way through five-spiced pork spring rolls, pan fry duck dumplings, zucchini and corn cakes and extra special fried rice. Each dish coming straight off Chef Jame’s pan and onto our table like little handmade gifts. Our Milton Gewurztraminer was the perfect sip to match these bold combinations of bold and sweet flavours. Nearby diners were sipping on Chef Jame’s favourite tea, Ti Kuan Yin, from beautiful Chinese tea pots and staring out to Sea. Tea is a special piece of the Yum Cha
experience. My group would savour those later - after the wine suggestions had been explored a little more. Our gracious hostess Sally was back to whisk our minds away to wine country. She pours us a glass of silky Pinot Noir - the Nanny Goat. It’s light and dreamy, perfectly chosen to accompany delicate flavours of the last part of our meal. Steamed dumplings and gentle flavours are enhanced, not overwhelmed by this drop. The little bamboo baskets I know so well from my Yum Cha days in the Valley began piling up on our table. Soft and tender beef dumplings and steamed duck buns- both extraordinary while they last, filled with soft, tender and steaming meat, Kung Po chicken ribs perfectly spiced and lightly fried, incredibly moreish. I don’t know if it was the twinkling waves in the distance, but steamed ocean dumplings tasted like the sea wrapped up in a thin, silky skin. In the most beautiful way, a mouthful of ocean and my favourite part of the menu. What a way to finish the meal. The warmth of a crackling fireplace beckons us to the bar as we snuggle into velvet chairs, overlooking the sea. It was time to enjoy the final touch - a pot of Ti Kuan Yin tea and a chat to Chef James Wu. It’s not often I meet a chef with a gentle and calming energy who has a great passion for Teas. Chef James poured us his favourite tea with all the care and gracious energy of pouring tea for family. “Ti Kuan Yin tea is very special. These leaves are hand picked off the fern and rolled by hand,” Chef James explains as he pours a cup for us to try. “Our Chinese Red tea conjures up memories of my house in the morning as a child,” he shared. “The Noosa palette is so different from anywhere else. We know they want to taste local flavours and have a unique dining experience that they can’t find anywhere else,” he said. noosatoday.com.au

Light and crunchy zucchini corn cakes. Very distant memories of early Yum Cha days in the Valley are happily forgotten this is the real deal. Far removed from the ‘fast’ pace of typical Yum Cha, this is most certainly slow dining from the heart. Yum Cha is available at Embassy XO every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with bookings from 12noon until 2pm (you can as long as you like after 2pm) I cannot recommend highly enough the beautiful selection of dishes on the $38 banquet.

Males consume almost 50 per cent more processed meat and red meat than females, with an average daily consumption of 15 grams of processed meat and 97.3 grams of red meat.* Current research shows that there are certain chemicals in red and processed meats - both added and naturally occurring - that cause these foods to be carcinogenic.** But what this means and the amount of meat that should be eaten for optimum health can cause confusion. What are 'red' and 'processed' meats? 'Red' meat refers to all mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork,
lamb, mutton, horse, and goat. 'Processed' meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavour or improve preservation, such as salami, bacon, sausages and ham. Does eating red and processed meats increase your risk of cancer? The consumption of red meat and processed meat is convincingly associated with a modest increased risk of bowel cancer. There is more limited evidence suggesting that processed meat is associated with oesophageal, lung, stomach and prostate cancer. Cooking meat at high temperatures, such as grilling or barbequing, can also create
chemicals in the meat that may increase the risk of cancer. These chemicals are generally produced in higher levels in red and processed meat compared to other meats. Cancer Council recommends you limit or avoid processed meats, which are also high in fat and salt. Does red meat still have a place in a healthy diet? Red meat is an important source of protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12, but it's the overconsumption of it is where there is cause for concern. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends we eat moderate amounts of red meat; around 65g of cooked lean red meat each day or a larger portion three to
four times a week to around 500g in total. What steps can I take to reduce my cancer risk? If you're having processed meat more than once a week, it's time to cut back. Try swapping ham for chicken at lunchtime, or opt for a salad with eggs, beans or lentils as your protein source. Or, swap in mushrooms, eggplant, or capsicum for a flavour boost to your pizza and pasta dishes, instead of prosciutto and pepperoni. Cutting back on the amount of processed meat, ensuring you are having the recommended serving size of red meat, and avoiding charred meat, is one simple step you can take today to reduce your risk of getting cancer in the future. ●

He is a gifted practitioner in addressing “challenges” we might encounter, tightness in necks, shoulders, lower back/hip pain are common issues. For thousands of years the Chinese have practiced Qigong and Tai Chi to encourage health and longevity, reduce stress, cultivate awareness, develop strength & flexibility and bring about a sense of balance. To introduce this ancient practice and its benefits to teenage girls, Noosa Leisure Centre will host a Qigong Workshop on Wednesday 4 July from 11am- 1pm. "Qigong can be thought of as a moving meditation. Slow, deep breaths are coordinated with movements and creative visualisation," says Qigong instructor Michelle Greene. "Qigong is regarded as a self-empowering practice that builds on the body's own internal healing systems. It's also a practice that promotes health, energy and wellbeing and initiates transformation on all levels." During the Qigong (Chi-kung) guided practice at the Leisure Centre, the girls will learn the importance of and how to belly breathe. "They will be introduced to the tools needed to calm their busy minds, reduce negative emotions, improve and enhance a positive attitude and increase energy levels. Through guided movements and deep breathing the girls will learn a basic Qigong flowing form, or set of movements, that can then be practised anywhere," says Michelle. noosatoday.com.au
The human body will restore itself more often than not, a good practitioner just helps that process.

A beautiful tool to have to help relieve anxiety and stress, reconnect mind and body and bring happiness, clarity and compassion into their very full teenage lives. Chinese Tea will also be served. "Qigong instructor Michelle Greene began practising Qigong on her quest to calm and quieten her busy mind and settle her anxiety, heal her digestion and other health issues and reconnect her mind and body," says Cathy Simon, Noosa Leisure Centre Coordinator. She has been practising under the guidance of many teachers over the past decade, including Master Liu Deming and undertaking intensive training in the mountains of China. "Michelle has a daughter and understands the complexities of teenage life and all the pressures socially, academically, physically and mentally that a teenage girl may be exposed to," says Cathy. Michelle has a passion to share Qigong with teen girls, giving them a tool that can benefit their emotional, spiritual and academic development and to offer them a system that can enhance their own self-healing abilities, body awareness and increased vitality. Energy Healing can increase the benefit of massage, by helping the patient acknowledge the tension / stress on a deeper level, often releasing its ‘hold’. Sessions can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs. Often stress and anxiety become a physical tension within the muscular system. Modern New Age writers, scientists, practitioners, even mystics from the past acknowledge stress and tension become almost infused within our cells / physical body.

DOLPHINS SHOW CLEAN SET OF FINS A great morning at USC for the Under 8 Fins. We played against Grammer and they were pretty quick off the mark. Led by our Captain Ethan Marshall the Fins started to work as a team and get the ball back. Conor Lee had great involvement and awesome tackles this week, along with Hamish Payne who is listening to what he is being shown at training and putting it more and more into his game. A couple of fantastic runaway tries from our speed crew Noah & Jacob, and some strong forward work from our super units Cody, Kellen & Hamish K. Ben and Jerry's Players of the Day were Hamish Payne and Ethan Marshall Noosa Fins vs Maroochydore Blue (U7): The Noosa Fins had the opportunity to play on a larger field this week and used the
extra space to their full advantage, running in a number of breathtaking tries to win comfortably, in front of their travelling fans in Caloundra. Man of the match Chayse Whitehill crossed the try line multiple times for the fins, on one occasion beating 5 players in a mazy run, before touching down under the posts. Noosa Reds vs Maroochydore Black (U7): The Noosa Reds completed a good day for the Dolphins Under 7's, as they also exploited the larger field and played some delightful running rugby to beat Maroochydore Black. Matthew Brooks was man of the match in this encounter, scoring multiple tries including a spectacular solo effort that started near his own try line. ●
U7s Chayse Whitehill leaves opposition players in his wake as he heads for the try line.

TIGERS TRUMP UQ WITH 15-GOAL BELTER Seniors Match report The Rococos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers recorded a strong fifteen goal thumping of University of Queensland in Brisbane last Saturday as all eyes now turn to the top of the table clash against arch rivals Maroochydore this Saturday 30th June. Whilst the Noosa Tigers AFC started a tad slowly against the students, once they turned up the heat it was evident that the Tigers attack on the ball and far superior ball movement would be the difference. Ruckman Connor McDonald dominated in the ruck and gave first use to the likes of Stack, Hill, Fitzpatrick and Woods whilst bustling forward Liam Kenny bagged six majors in a dominating performance up front. Once again the goal kicking was shared amongst several Tigers which is such a major reason why the Noosa side sit half a game clear on top of the table. The backline again led by skipper Aaron Laskey continues to be miserly with the inform Harry Maher along with Tyler Stack vying for best on ground honours, On-baller Jayden Holt returned from injury with a commanding showing as we lead into a very intriguing derby at Fishermans rd this Saturday. This match is one always not to be missed as this match will most likely determine who will finish on top at the end of the home and away season. Can't wait! Go tigers! Cheers Pittsy
JUNIOR REPORTS Youth Girls Report The Tigerettes were back into it last Sunday at home with our Under 13 Youth Girls starting well but being totally overrun in the final three quarters by a pretty strong Maroochydore outfit. In trying rotation circumstances the Noosa girls battled on admirably with Natasha Monahan, Jemima Ward, Lexi Ladd and Kyushu Hides the standouts for the Under 13 Youth Girls. We have to also mention to Georgia Pitts who stood out of the game due to the oppositions request and should be applauded for how she handled the situation. The Under 15 Youth Girls were on the main oval and played 18 a side against a physically strong Kawana outfit and the girls did not let the strong Noosa crowd down. Their effort across the four quarters was fantastic and came away with a 50 point win. Maggie Harmer was just brilliant for the victors whilst Hannah Mckenzie and Mia Woodburn's run and carry was prevalent. Keana Welsh was terrific in the middle as was Teesha Fox whilst Lauren Vaughan continues to dominate across half back. Three youth girls games all at home this weekend before a school holiday break! Go Tigers, Cheers Pittsy Noosa Red Under 14 Boys After a tough few weeks, the Noosa Red under 14 Tigers got back on the winners list with a gutsy win over North Shore Jets.
With some key players missing, the Tigers called on four under 12 boys to 'double up' and they all made a contribution - well done and thank you to Jago Roberts, Leroy Brown, Ethan Slaney and Levi Glancey. The game was tight all day and at half time the Tigers held a handy 11 point lead. The Jets however got back on top in the third quarter and went into the final break one point up. The last quarter was a tight affair however it was the Tigers who kicked the last two goals of the match to run out 10 point victors 9.6.60 to North Shore 7.8.50. On a day when nearly every player played their best game of the year, it was hard to individualise with the naming of award winners. Eric Mahe was superb all day and continued his great form. Stand in captain Fletcher Reynolds was brilliant at centre half back and led from the front. Jack Leary was the live wire the Tigers needed and set up a number of goals with his pace and skill. And after a gradual comeback from injury, Jaxon Membrey showed what he is capable with a great four quarter effort. A great team effort from all boys and a well deserved victory. Noosa Blue Under 12 Boys On a perfect day for Qld winter footy, the Noosa under 12 Div 1 boys took on a competitive North shore team. Playing a lower placed team on the ladder is always a danger game. But the guys were up for the challenge. With a congested forward line and a disappointing 3rd quarter,
overall it was a convincing win. Our back line held strong all day, and our mid field dominated. Toby bagged 4 for the day, matching Jordy from last week. Best players in order were Ethan Slaney, Cooper Delaney, Beau Smith and Luke Morris. Well done to Kai, Otis, Drew and Josh for filling in for North Shore and Jack from Noosa Red for helping us out. Noosa Red vs Maroochydore Roos U12 A later start on Sunday 11am and with quite warm weather to deal with, this was a real danger game against a solid Maroochydore Roos outfit. We had a few things against us; some of our players had colds and a couple of others played with little niggles, on top of that we only had 18 players available. Taking all that into account we recorded a great win 4.8.32 to 1.3.9 With so many things against us we really needed a great team effort and that's what we got form everyone; hard running and strong tackling being a feature. Special mention to Noah kicking three goals and Jonty kicked a ripper from the boundary line. The two Xanders were outstanding in the middle and Kyan also provided a lot of drive. Codey played very well in a number of positions as did Carter. Well done to everyone as all players really did some important things throughout the game. ●

World tour rookie Caroline Marks is making her mark everywhere she surfs this year. The 16-year-old Californian goofy blitzed a hot field in the Cabo Open in Mexico last week, defeating world title contender Tatiana Weston-Webb in fantastic conditions at Zippers, the aptly-named right just outside of San Jose del Cabo. Photo: WSL started on a First Lady who thinks it's clever to visit homeless refugees wearing a jacket with the slogan, "I really don't care, do u?" But I read a story in the on-line Washington Post this week that made my blood boil on behalf of the Trump camp. Sara Huckabee Sanders, whose distasteful job it is to hold a daily press conference and try to explain the latest inanity of the POTUS, made a dinner reservation in her husband's name for a group of people at a little rural restaurant called the Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia. By the time the press attache arrived, the rest of her party was already seated, tucking into a cheese platter and slurping good wine, but when he realized who the late arrival was, the chef made a call to the restaurant owner, who jumped in her car and hurried to the Hen. No, she wasn't after the autograph of the Presidential spokesperson. She had come to tell her to leave. According to the Post, Stephanie Wilkinson, well known in Lexington for her liberal leanings, called Sanders onto a balcony and asked her to leave. To their credit, the party of eight paid for what they'd consumed and left quietly without fuss. Wilkinson later told the Post: "This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals." She also noted that
as "a tsunami of day-trippers". Decades ago when we lived near the tip of Sydney's northern beaches peninsula there was actually a serious campaign to create a check point on the Bilgola bends to control the flow of weekend day-trippers. Politely, of course. "I'm sorry, sir, you can't bring your family to Palmie today, it's full." While I haven't heard of anything so whacky here, Noosa Council is taking the day-tripper threat seriously, and is examining strategies to at least manage the influx if it can't be stopped. The irony is, of course, that if T.M. Burke had been allowed to build a road around the headland like every other place in Australia, we wouldn't have this problem. To all the naysayers who maintain that it's too late, that the bell can't be un-rung, the day-tripper stoppers say this: no one believed we could de-amalgamate either. Noosans - those of us who scraped inside the population cap in time - have shown that we are willing to fight and fight hard for our Arcadian splendor. So if you know anyone planning to nick up to Noosa for a few hours with an empty wallet, tell 'em don't bother. One for the Trump fans Regular readers of this column will know that I'm no fan of the bouffanted bully boy in the White House, and don't get me

Sanders worked in an "inhumane and unethical" administration. I don't know about you, but I would have kicked over a few tables on the way out, and then taken a very close look at Virginia's restaurant licensing regulations. Never mind the moralizing bunk from her mouth, in this case the morality issue lies with the proprietor, not the customer. If Sanders and her mates had all been wearing the white robes of the Ku Klux Klan, then perhaps a line would have been crossed, but to be thrown out of a restaurant simply for the political beliefs of your boss is an outrage. It wouldn't happen in Noosa, would it? ●

Over the past few weeks I've been researching an article for a national magazine about Noosa's long struggle against over-development, interviewing some of the major players over the past 50 years. It's an interesting story, but perhaps the most intriguing aspect for me is that while many of the people I've talked to agree that the real conservation battles were won at least a decade ago, they now see an even more insidious threat. It's one that goes by many names, usually in an effort to disguise any perceived elitism, but it can broadly be described as the fear that Noosa is going to be loved to death. The theory - some would call it a reality - is that having spent the previous half century creating a balance between the natural and built environment that is the envy of people the world over, now we are being over-run by those who want to share it. They clog up our roads, take up our parking spots and, worst sin of all, they steal our waves. They must be stopped! That's fine as far as it goes, but here's the tricky part of the argument. If they come for a week and stay at a hotel and eat on Hastings Street and drop a few grand into the local economy, that's okay. It's called tourism and it keeps our boat afloat. If they drive up from Brisbane or Maroochydore for a few hours respite from the rat race and don't spend anything, well that's an outrage. One of our more outspoken civic leaders and environmentalists described it to me

NOOSA EAGLES SHINE IN THE SUN Another gorgeous sunny day for our home game on Saturday, with our little eagles all excited and ready to play. U7 Gold welcomed a new player, Cooper to the team. Everyone worked hard on defense and Oscar did a fantastic job as goalie. Although they came away with a loss against Mooloolaba Milky way, 3-2, the kids still had a great time playing.
Well done to U7 Black, who had a great game and came off with a win. Congratulations to U9 who had an epic game, Coach Jim is very proud of all the players who are really starting to understand the game, and their new positions. They had a great win this week and should all be very proud. Another exciting game to watch was
U10 Black! The defense on both teams were outstanding, but it was Noosa who took the win, 2-0! Iggy fought hard in goals, stopping some magnificent kicks! Well done to the players in defense who gave it there all. The midfielders worked hard as a team, displaying some outstanding passes to the strikers who also showed some great skill! Well done

We would also like to thank our wonderful community for your support at our Bunnings BBQ fundraiser! We are very grateful for the generosity you showed our kids and our club. â—?

PLENTY OF GREAT OPTIONS IN THE RIVER IN HARD WEATHER With the weather last weekend a little patchy most anglers that headed offshore tended to hang close it. There have been heaps of snapper and Pearlies around North Reef and Chardon's Reef with micro jigs a great way to fish this area, soft plastic have also been temping these great table fish from the bottom. Sweetlip have been well spread throughout most of the major reefs, with some bigger fish caught during the lower light periods. There has been odd coral trout on Sunshine Reef, fishing hard to the reef is the best way to come into contact so a running sinker rig with the sinker all the way to the hook should see results. We've seen some great schools of live bait on most of the reefs at the moment so make sure you have your bait jigging rod handy. Another great fish we are see in good numbers is cobia and they love to take a live bait mid water so git those live bait out and hang on! In the river; the river mouth and dog beach area has been producing great number of quality bream, whiting and flathead drifting both live and dead baits. Live herring and live worms have been the stand out baits and pilchards and worms have been the favourite dead baits. Luderick are also on the chew at the River Mouth car park rocks sitting in around the 12 foot mark of water. Weed can be collected from Coolum rocks. Big schools of trevally have been prevalent throughout the Woods Bay and Noosa Sound area they have noosatoday.com.au
been responding well to surface poppers and surface walkers, prawn imitation soft plastics have also been doing the job. Along the Gympie terrace stretch using live blood worms has been producing whiting up to 38cm as well as quality sized bream. A little further upriver the Tewantin stretch and the first ski run has been producing jew fish in the low lights of the morning and afternoon. Paddle vibes have been dynamite on the jew and the odd trevally. Lake Cooroibah has been producing great numbers of pan sized flathead fishing hard body's in the shallow water as well as soft plastics. On the beaches the tailor are really starting to turn up, Noosa North Shore has some great gutters at the moment and the tailor have been plentiful on the high tide, pilchard, bonito strip baits, and mullet strip baits have all been perfect baits. The ever-present dart are still in great numbers with the bigger fish over 50cm coming in on the high tide, prawns and worms have been the baits of choice. Whiting are also in good numbers with the start of the runout seeming to be the prime time, worms, pippies and live yabbies have been perfect baits. Jew are also about with the stretch from Teewah to Double Island the most productive, live baits on slider rigs has been very successful on these great fish. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
