Richard Doig with a Lilydale High School Year Book. 182347

12377078-CG04-18

A group of old school friends are hoping to mark in style an historic occasion for the Yarra Ranges - the 60th anniversary of the burning down of Lilydale High School. While many in the region may have few, if any, recollections of the event, the fire on 5 May, 1958, caused major disruptions, with the school servicing much of the Yarra Ranges district, including Healesville and Yarra Glen, even as far away as Powelltown. Long-time resident and former student, Richard Doig, and a group of school pals who meet regularly are intent on uniting people who were involved with the school in the 1950s. So far, Mr Doig said they have around 500 people on their list, with as few as 150 contactable. "So far, the boys have been much easier to find than the girls, because many of the girls have changed their name through marriage," he said. "Our group meets for lunch quite regularly and we really wanted to do something special to mark this historic occasion and what it meant for the region. "I remember there was quite a bit of excitement at the time; that students had to go to great lengths to attend (temporary) classrooms, which were around the district. "The school was known as a 'bus school', because it was one of the only schools of its type in the region. So, many came from Healesville, Silvan, Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Warburton and surrounds." In the fire event on Monday 5 May, 1958, nearly all of the school was burnt to the ground. Only the Domestic Arts Wing and the original classrooms survived. The cause of the fire is still unknown. While there was some suspicion the fire was deliberately lit, no charges were ever laid. Most of the library, nearly all the students' report books, as well as examination papers, were destroyed. After the fire, it was decided that senior forms would use the base buildings in Clarke Street, while junior forms would use the undamaged rooms on the site of the main school. The school also secured the use of the Parish Hall, the Baptist Hall, the Court Room and

Zombies the star of show By Derek Schlennstedt Monbulk College is holding their annual production and three alumni have returned to the school to not only assist the director but to remind current students about the importance of drama. Sarah Clark, a graduate from 2010 spoke to the 'Mail' about this year's production which she described as a zombie romance. "This year the college production is called Zombie Prom," Ms Clark said. "It's a black comedy about a boy and girl who meet and fall in love at high school, but it's a classic he's a bad boy, she's a good girl and there's pressure from her parent to breakup with him." "Anyway the boy in question then jumps into a nuclear reactor ... it gets quite bleak, but it brings the laughs and is quite funny." Ms Clark, along with fellow alumni John Riddell and Annalee Zampaglione, have returned this year to help assist in producing and organising the production, which takes to the stage in August.

Speaking about her own experiences with the production while she attended Monbulk College, Sarah recalled the importance of it in her own life. "For the three of us, that was where we became friends, and it was really quite influential in our lives," she said. "It's great to see the kids have the same opportunity that we had. "I think that was probably really the year I found my confidence ... I'd done some performing outside of school, but it was probably the highlight of anything I did at school and gave me a lot more confidence; I loved it." Ms Clark said the casting so far had been great and the students had really taken on the task of rehearsing. The production is due to come to the stage in the second week of August; and while a little dark, Ms Clark assured that it was definitely family friendly, and included many fun musical numbers. Students show their mettle, as garden takes shape By Derek Schlennstedt Students at Emerald Secondary College are helping their fellow students by helping build a sensory garden. With the help of artist Jane BennettsBrown, and a generous State Government and Creative Learning grant, Year 10 and 12 VCAL students have been using recycled metal to create artwork for it. Sensory gardens are popular with and beneficial to adolescents, especially those who have sensory processing issues, including autism and other disabilities. As such, the art pieces the sensory garden appeals to the five senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing and taste. Wellbeing Leader Felicity Wooden said it was a particularly good pairing between Ms Bennets-Brown and the school, as not only does the project promote creativity, but the students also learn how to weld. "The students are doing an amazing job and have come up with all different things," Ms Wooden said. "There's a weave and breathe wall which is a big mesh thing that they've welded together that you can weave leaves through, and stroke." There's a water feature with copper pots ... they are doing some really good things." Ms Wooden said that the sensory garden would be accessed as a calming place and somewhere the students can stimulate their senses in a relaxing and gentle way.

IN BRIEF

A coot discovery In a rare find, a long-nosed bandicoot has been spotted foraging at a small reserve in Mount Evelyn. The nocturnal mammal was captured by one of Yarra Ranges Council's 13 infrared cameras placed throughout the municipality by Council's bushland and biodiversity teams as part of their Fauna Monitoring program. The species was identified by Council staff and confirmed by scientist and bandicoot expert Peter Menkhorst from DELWP's Arthur Rylah Institute due to its long snout, long ears, hip stripe and pale tail. Cr Tim Heenan said the species hadn't popped up on the radar in Mount Evelyn since 1966, according to DELWP's Victorian Biodiversity Atlas data base. "It's very unusual to find these bandicoots this close to an urban environment," Cr Tim Heenan. "While the long-nosed bandicoot is not listed as endangered or under threat, in southern

Australia the population is struggling. "It proves to show the importance of the Olinda Creek area. It's a really good vegetation corridor linking to the Silvan catchment which includes Silvan Reservoir." The species was also spotted on camera at Dixons Creek in September 2015 and the Sassafras creek corridor in January 2016. Council Weed Management Officer Paul Smitka said the bandicoot species had visited the Mount Evelyn site five times in a two week period in April this year. "At this stage we are not sure it is the same bandicoot returning or if the photographs are telling us there is more than one," he said. The cameras, which provide video and photographs, were set up to capture baseline data of what animals are in the area. The most commonly recorded species are black wallabies, wombats, brush tail and ring tail possums and bush rats. "The main reason we do it is to find out

what fauna species we have in our reserves. It allows us to manage our sites in a more efficient manner and to provide the right habitat structure for species," Mr Smitka said. "If we know what species are there we can have a staged approach to removing weeds. "It's a real bonus when we get something as unique as this and rare to the location." Council has been working to improve native vegetation in the area with environmental community groups such as Mt Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA), Friends of Mt Evelyn Aqueduct and Friends of Water Race and Quinn Reserve, as well as the State Government's Melbourne Water and the Federal Government's Green Army environmental action plan which focused on teaching people skills about weed management. The long -nosed bandicoot is found along the eastern coast of Australia, from Victoria to Queensland. They feed on beetles, spiders, plants, other insects and fungi.

Graffiti begone Offensive graffiti has been appearing over the past week in the township of Monbulk. Police are asking for information that could identify this male who may be able to assist Police with the investigation. There appears to be a distinctive circular shaped key ring, which is white in colour hanging from his back pocket. Anyone with information is urged to contact Monbulk Police on 9756 6266.

Plants taken Between 4pm on 22 June, and 9am on 25 June, a quantity of seedlings and plants amounting to $285 was stolen from a nursery on Monbulk-Seville Road, Silvan. Anyone with information is urged to contact Monbulk Police on 9756 6266.

Lock the box Between 6pm on 23 June and 9am on 24 June, unknown persons has entered a property on Queens Road, Silvan, where they have stolen a quantity of tools from inside an unlocked toolbox. Offenders attempted to remove a very heavy tool, but were unable to take it from the property due to its weight. Crime scene police have processed the area and enquiries are continuing. Police remind individuals to ensure that any valuable items are locked up and kept out of sight. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lilydale Crime Unit on 9739 2300

Men's shed makes a move for the better Mooroolbark site would soon be underway after applying for a planning permit at Council. "It's a dream come true and it has been three years in the making," Mr Lowry said. "Originally we were going to have to build a kitchen and toilets in a new shed at a different location on Manchester Rd. "At this Manchester Heights location, we can use the facilities in the existing club house." Mr Lowry said the group had raised $20,000 for the building fund by selling their Men's Shed items regularly at barbeques they held outside Coles. "We make possum boxes, bird feeders, bird nesting boxes and children's toys," Mr Lowry said. "I'd like to see this new site become a mini community hub. Further down the track we

would like to see a small community garden that neighbouring residents use." Previously, the group had been operating out of a Montrose site as a temporary measure until the Manchester Heights site became available. The Mooroolbark Men's Shed is inviting people - male and female - to get in touch and join their club after reaching capacity at the previous site. "We have seen how members have changed from retiring to their shell and sitting on the couch to completely coming out of their shells," Mr Lowry said. "We have a coffee and sit down ... you don't have to make things." "We also welcome women into our shed; my wife Margaret is a member and is our secretary."

The Mooroolbark Men's Shed members have moved into their new home at the Manchester Heights Tennis courts site at Mooroolbark, after receiving State Government funding and a lease from Yarra Ranges Council. Cr Terry Avery said the land had become available after Manchester Heights Tennis Club made plans to amalgamate with Mooroolbark Tennis Club. "We hope other organisations can use the old tennis pavilion at this site for their regular meetings like the Lions Club or the Historical Society for example," Cr Avery said. "We are thrilled that the men's shed is able to move ahead with plans to build a shed on the tennis court after receiving $60,000 from the State Government's Department of Human Services." Mooroolbark Men's Shed president John Lowry said construction of the new shed at the

Victorian criminals will now face tougher bail laws, with the completion of reforms sparked by Melbourne's Bourke Street tragedy. Senior police can now remand a person in custody for up to 48 hours - until a court can hear their application for bail - under the changes which came into to force on July 1. The measures will also strengthen the tests for people to be granted bail, with decisionmakers encouraged to take into account a person's potential risk to community safety. The changes are the second set of bail reforms to come into effect, with the first round of amendments implemented in May. The reform is part of the Victorian government's response to a 2017 review of the state's bail system, prompted by the Bourke St rampage which killed six people when a car was driven through a busy lunchtime crowd. But it won't only be Victoria's alleged crooks who will feel the impact of legal changes as the new financial year gets under way. Those in the market for a new pet will find they can only purchase direct from a breeder, rather than through a shop. Pet stores will now only be able to sell dogs older than six months and cats older than eight weeks, sourced from registered pounds, animal shelters or enrolled foster carers.

Health facilities a priority As the local member for Monbulk, giving my community access to the best health facilities possible is, and always has been, a priority of mine. Recently, claims were made by the Opposition regarding the accessibility of Angliss Hospital's new Intensive Care Unit. Unfounded and incorrect claims about lack of funding and staff support - which is ironic, given the Liberals had the entire Angliss Hospital slated for closure under the Kennett government - and Labor is the only government that has ever invested in the hospital. The truth is; we're almost at the finish-line

on the $20 million redevelopment of Angliss Hospital's new Intensive Care Unit and Short Stay Unit - a 2014 election promise we've been committed to delivering.

This expansion will provide quality care to the community and addresses past problems of service shortages and infrastructure issues. While the physical redevelopment was completed ahead of schedule in May this year, there will be an important commissioning period - which has always been included in the project's timeline - in the coming months before operation of the ICU commences to ensure the safe delivery of the new services. This involves hiring and training staff and installing test equipment before the expansion opens later this year. We want the new facility to be the pinnacle

of safety, and therefore these steps are more than necessary to ensure that. The ICU will use the latest technology to stabilise and treat heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, organ failure and complications resulting from surgery. It means urgent care when it's needed most and less instances of ambulances diverting patients to other hospitals. I want to thank you - patients, staff and the community - for your patience during the construction of the new fourth floor. I look forward to officially opening level four of the Angliss Hospital as soon as safely possible.

Station upgrade By Peter Douglas Monbulk CFA could be in for an election windfall if the Matthew Guy-led Liberal-Nationals Government comes to power in November's state election. Monbulk candidate John Schurink announced on Friday 22 June his government would commit $2.4 million towards the development of the fire station. The upgrade would see a new four-bay station constructed, with fire brigade volunteers being able to work with modern facilities. Mr Schurink said the works would assist greatly in improving fire services for the local community and surrounding areas. "It is vital that the Monbulk community has

the resources it needs to fight fires and protect our communities, when we need the help most, and this new facility will provide that," Mr Schurink said. "The current facilities here at Monbulk are no longer acceptable for a station that not only provides fire response, but turns out for rescue over a large area across the Dandenong Ranges." Given the brigade's special capability in ropes and road rescue, training is an essential part of their activity. Presently, the facilities are no longer fit for purpose and no longer ensure safety for volunteers. Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin, joined Mr Schurink in announcing the funds.

"The credit for this funding belongs to the community and local candidate, John Schurink, who worked together and made the case for this project, so they can provide the best for our hardworking volunteers," Mr Battin said. Meanwhile, Monbulk CFA captain, Simon Schroder, said the support was most welcome for the brigade. "It means a lot to us. As you know, it takes a lot for the brigade to raise money to keep going, on top of what the government provides," Captain Schroder said. "Certainly, a building with a new station would be well beyond us and we appreciate the government promising to dip in here and help us out."

Close to 5000 supporters have signed a petition urging the Victorian Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, to ignore a planning amendment before him related to the redevelopment of Burnham Beeches. Included in the amendment, C142, is a proposal that could see the removal of as many as 13 of the Beech trees that line Sherbrooke Road near the entrance of the iconic property. Co-developers - celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison are seeking permission to remove some of the trees in order to accommodate a driveway and road-widening works at the estate's entrance. However, the proposal has earned the ire of several groups in the Dandenong Ranges, with emerging lobby group, 'Save the Beech Trees', recently holding a 'peaceful gathering' at the Alfred Nicholas Gardens to voice their concerns. The gathering comes as Yarra Ranges Council awaits the decision of Mr Wynne. Emerald resident Dylan Arnold has established the online petition, through change. org, which he said he created "for concerned individuals to sign and share their reasons for signing - in the hope it can be sent to all the decision-makers". Mr Arnold said this is to "show them (the decision-makers) that this community is clearly against the proposed developments and destruction of the trees". In the petition, Dylan has pleaded for community support, which reads: 'We are of the opinion that the Minister should not sign off on the amendment until further investigations have taken place and finalised a plan, in relation to the Beech trees and road and drivewaywidening works, is submitted to his office. 'As opposed to simply putting trust in developers and council to make the decision after the fact, which, in many ways, comes across as a 'cart before the horse' approach to what is a highly contentious and important issue'. The petition can be found at https://bit.ly/2LLz4QL.

NEWS

New editor for the 'Mail' By Peter Douglas Over the past three-and-a-half years, I've had the privilege of filling the position of editor with Mail New Group. During this time, I've been exceptionally fortunate to have enjoyed great support from the Yarra Ranges community, as well as Star News Group and North East Media. This opinion piece is my opportunity to thank the many individuals who I've worked closely with (thank you!). I have finished up with Mail News Group to take up a media position with the City of Port Phillip.

Having taken up the role of editor in January 2015, after moving from the North East Victoria/Border region, I quickly became aware of just how passionate and dedicated the locals are in the Yarra Ranges. I've enjoyed reporting on the many issues that are important to the area, as well as meeting many of the great characters. More than anything, this job is all about the great people you get to meet. Though, from time to time, I am asked which story is the biggest, or most rewarding, I've worked on. To be honest, I like to think of it as the ongoing coverage we've been able to offer over a

long period of time, more than one particular article. But if I did have to answer more in depth, it would be the many road tragedies we've covered here that have left the most profound impression on me. The Avonsleigh Angels incident in 2015 is one I'll never forget. The Cooper Ratten road tragedy, as well as the accident in Mount Evelyn that claimed the life of Amber Beard, are others that have left indelible impressions. On a more positive note, I believe our coverage of the Upwey CFA centenary, and the battle to keep open the Upwey-Belgrave RSL,

has been first-class. The Pride Cup in Yarra Glen, too, is another I have enjoyed working on. Moving forward, stepping into the role will be Casey Neill, who many may know from her first stint with Mail News Group as a reporter. Casey has moved across from the 'Dandenong Journal', where she has been a reporter for the past five years. She brings with her many years of experience in the media industry, as well as an infectious enthusiasm and a drive to do her best for the community. Please make her feel welcome.

LETTERS What's in a name? Thanks to all those who congratulated me on my recent letter to the 'Mail' regarding the cruelty of the live animal export trade. But I didn't write it. The strange truth is that there are 'two' women named Pauline Hosking who live in Monbulk. Pauline I, who has been in Monbulk the longest, is rightly concerned with supporting animals. Pauline II (me) used to live in Emerald and writes plays and children's books. Confusing? Very. Pauline Hosking II, Monbulk

A slippery subject After receiving a phone call from (Monbulk MP) James Merlino's office ... I went down to

CARTOON his office in Belgrave, thinking they were going to inform me they have finally secured some funds to repair the walking tracks in the Sherbrooke forest. How naive of me. You see, I wrote a letter to James Merlino on 7 September 2015, after coming back from a two-week hiking holiday in Austria and Slovenia. While I was there, I was amazed at how well the walking tracks are maintained; unlike the overgrown and quagmire-like state of our forest tacks. Well, he sent my letter onto Lisa Neville, Minister for Environment, and she returned a reply and promised in the letter to remove organic matter from the tracks, resurfacing with gravel, construct drainage points and slashing vegetation along track edges and will be completed by December 2015. Unfortunately, that time has come and gone. But they have placed star-pickets with a

sign, warning you of the appalling conditions of the tracks and that they can be very slippery in the winter. I suppose Parks Victoria thinks that is fulfilling their duty of care? But, of course, when I got to the office and made an inquiry what the phone call was about, I was informed that it was from James Merlino's electoral office to see what I thought of the political parties. While I was there, I picked up a pamphlet called Active Victoria. In the pamphlet, it shows they have allocated $1 billion to sports and recreation for Victoria; of that, they have allocated $420 million towards community infrastructure such as sports grounds, parks and trails etc. Well, we are certainly not getting any up here, so where is all this money going? Parks Victoria is not getting any. Anton Candir, Belgrave

BEST PRICE, BEST TANKS WITH A LIFETIME GUARANTEE With Winter Rains still to come, it’s time to catch it, order and build your concrete tank NOW!!!

Ph. 0260 267 021 Concrete tanks built correctly will last a life time! Terry Miller has been in the concrete tank building business for over 30 years. Being from country North East Victoria himself, Barnawartha, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems. Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because the tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo roof, concrete top or open top tanks. The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, homes can be kept cool and wet. Or if need be, the tank can be used as protection to keep cool from flames and radiant heat. Water is our most important resource, and we cannot have too much of it! So for all your water storage needs when you are thinking of installing your next tank, please call Terry for a quote on 1800 267 696 or check out our website, www.terrymillerconcretetanks.com.au. And in light of fire prone districts, we can highly recommend if you are considering your own on site water, choose a well constructed concrete water tank, as tin and plastic tanks will melt during fires!

NEWS

More support for women Advocacy group Voices of Women (VoW) is hosting Women in Government workshops from July to November, to provide an avenue for Yarra Ranges women to learn about local government and why we more female councillors are needed. The workshops, held at Yarra Ranges Council venues, will explain how local government works, the role of a Councillor, and will inspire participants to support more women to run for council in 2020. Female councillors from the east will be speaking at the sessions, to share their experience campaigning in their local communities and what they learnt and achieved along the

way after being elected. VoW president and small business owner Sue West said the sessions and upcoming mentoring program would assist in addressing and supporting candidates through all phases, from putting their hands up to become a councillor to providing support and encouragement to the candidates. "Our aim is to create a groundswell of community based support and increase the awareness in the community of the need for and the importance of female representation in decision making," Ms West said. "Women make up more than half the population in the Yarra Ranges so women should

be adequately represented in our community. There needs to be diversity, reflecting different perspectives, experience and leadership styles." Ms West said there were opportunities for women to support the process of ensuring strong female candidates become available to run by contributing to administration, marketing, door knocking, childcare or even moral support. Yarra Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister said that women interacted on a daily basis with council services in terms of childcare, education, adult care services, libraries, sporting facilities and business community events and

made the majority of phone calls to council offices. "Despite women constantly engaging with the services, we are often under-represented on local Councils, particularly in the Yarra Ranges, where currently I am the only female Councillor," Cr McAllister said. "It wasn't always this way and we would like to see that change because being a Councillor is a very rewarding experience which offers you the ability to influence outcomes for your community." Australian Local Government Women's Association (ALGWA) Victorian branch president, Cr Kleinert, will be speaking at three of the sessions and will answer questions from participants about being a councillor. The Women in Council project is supported by VoW, Yarra Ranges Council, Victorian Local Government Association and Eastern Health's Health Promotion.

LOOKING GOOD FEELING GREAT

Foot, knee or leg pain? Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most daily activities, so its no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. The experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics recently shed light on common foot and leg concerns, naming the most common concerns as knee pain, injuries and arthritis, heel, shin and forefoot pain as well as ankle and achilles concerns. "Many conditions are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist," the experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics said. "Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can contribute to postural aches/pains and undue stress on joints and tissues." Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet. "Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies are now outdated for conditions such as foot and leg pain and arthritis, and have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases," the Foot and Leg Pain Clinic experts said "We now have effective, natural medical alternatives and treatments for such conditions. Regenerative therapies such as Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) are helping many to heal injuries and assist degeneration." Experts warn that foot and leg problems left untreated usually do get worse, however, most foot and leg concerns can be addressed relatively easily and effectively with appropriate treatment. "By combining regenerative therapies with a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine, biomechanics,

BIRTHDAY GIFTS FROM THE BANK AS the Bendigo Bank continues to celebrate its Upwey Community Bank branch turning 20 in October, some more groups have received surprise grants from staff nominations. Sherbrooke Little Athletics was pleased to receive a Club Rewards payment of $140 and even more surprised and excited to receive $1000 from staff member Melodie. Melodie, from the Upwey branch, nominated the club because she believes small clubs have limited funds and the extra money will help them reach their goals. Emerald SES was surprised and rapt to receive the $1000 Staff Choice Grant from Julie at the Belgrave branch recently. Julie believes that the SES does a lot of great work in many emergency situations. Matt and Ben from Emerald SES received the cheque from Julie. “We will be continuing to celebrate our 20th birthday with these ‘surprise presentations’ in the lead-up to our birthday in October,” said company chairman John Waters. “I’m also pleased to advise that the board recently approved a Special Sponsorship Program to provide clubs in our catchment with defibrillators and we will be letting everyone know the details of how to apply for this sponsorship in the coming weeks.” ●

The 1000 Portrait Project ... so far By Kath Gannaway Mail readers will be familiar with Healesville photographer Jesse Graham's work as a former photojournalist with the Mail, but not perhaps with his brilliant portraiture. His interest in photography developed from taking photos on his first camera phone to when he got his first 'real' camera at 16 while still at Healesville High School. The 'bug' really bit around four years ago when he challenged himself to take a photo a day. "It was a way of learning my way around the camera and learning the different techniques and use of the settings through taking photos in different situations, landscapes, under different light conditions, day and night ..." he said as he prepares to hang a major exhibition which launches in July. The 1000 Portrait Project, a three-year documentation of people from the wider Melbourne area and their stories followed on from that first photo-a-day challenge, inspired by a growing admiration for the art of portraiture. Jesse said he was particularly inspired by National Geographic photojournalist Steve McCurry's famous 1984 photographic portrait of Sharbat Gula titled 'Afghan Girl'. "I've always loved portraiture. I bought McCurry's book and decided I wanted to do a large-scale project which I thought would also be another worthwhile learning tool." Undoubtedly his experience as a journalist

has played into the way he approaches participants, who vary from family members and friends to co-workers and passers-by on the street. While the photographs in many ways speak for themselves, and stand alone as compelling portraits, the words are important. "I write a bit about how I know the person, about my relationship with them, and more recently I've been interviewing people and asking a few questions. "The words are important in contextualising and giving an insight into the person," Jesse says. The project which is due to finish in 2019, is halfway completed and one of the biggest challenges right now for the artist is choosing the works that will feature in the exhibition which opens at Red Earth Gallery, Mooroolbark Community Centre, on Thursday, 5 July at 6pm. In the meantime, Jesse said he is looking for another 480 people to complete the project. For more information on the 1000 Portrait Project visit facebook.com/1000portrait project ; on the exhibition bit. ly/1000PortraitsExhibition, or email 1000portraitproject@gmail.com . 1000 Portrait Project is part of Yarra Ranges Council's Framed Festival which celebrates photographic portraiture in the Yarra Ranges and includes exhibitions, floor talks, workshops and a competition. Show of yesteryear By Derek Schlennstedt The ARKadian Authentic All-Woman Old Time Music Hall (the second) is ARK Theatre's upcoming production. Written for the Lilydale thespians company by Geelong-based Collin Mockett, Fiona Carter will once again direct this fond reincarnation of the vaudeville/music hall shows of yesteryear. The all singing, all dancing production is an all-woman show, though Ms Carter admitted that there would be a few men thrown in to round out the numbers. She said audiences would be treated to lively renditions of songs and many familiar favourites. Those who come along can expect to be entertained in a light hearted way," she said. "The Setting is 1918, just after, or the end of the war, and there's sing-alongs, solo performances and a mixture of old times songs ... it's all about putting the audience at ease so they can sit back and think back to a bygone era." Colourful characters in costumes to match will recreate the atmosphere and entertainment of a 1918 music hall and patrons are also encouraged to come in 1918 period costumer if they wish. Accompanied on piano by Miss Brooklyn Keybourne, Chairman Ross will again offer a rendition of a G&S favourites and will no doubt regale audiences with tale of the company. The show is the second Music Hall with Ark theatre's first music hall two years ago warmly received. Over the first two weekends in July, seven shows will be presented at Lilydale Heights College Performing Arts Centre at 17 Nelson Rd Lilydale. SPORT

Wins go to the top five By Cameron Hutchison Round 10 was played in cold, windy and very damp conditions - it was a sit-in-your-car kind of day. There is still that log-jam in Division 1 with all top five sides winning on Saturday, so the next couple of weeks are bound to be very entertaining. In Division 2, Seville is still on top with a bigger percentage gap separating them from Yarra Glen in second. The winners in senior football: Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Yea, Kinglake, Yarra Junction and Seville. A-grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Seville, Yarra Junction and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 15.9.99 d Emerald 11.16.82 Healesville sits fifth on the ladder but by percentage only after a win over Emerald. Healesville got the early lead, kicking six straight in the first to 3.3. Emerald was well and truly in it, but the visitors kicked 5.3 to 3.5 in the second and the margin at the main break was 25 points. The third quarter was an even contest but Healesville maintained its buffer going into the last. Emerald had most of the play in the last, kicking 3.4 to 2.1, and if only the side was accurate the result could have been a boil over. Healesville best: L. Daly, J. Nugent (1 goal), N. Mende, J. McGrath (5 goals), R. Woodford (4 goals), K. Niki (3 goals). Emerald best: J. Pedder (5 goals), S. Kelleher (2 goals), S. Semmens, J. Rich (1 goal), A. Quirk, T. Thomsen. Olinda Ferny Creek 11.8.74 d Monbulk 7.9.51 Olinda Ferny Creek has held onto top spot but only just, after Monbulk challenged early. Monbulk got the early lead kicking 3.2 to just one behind as the side caught a sleeping Olinda in the first quarter. Olinda jumped into action in the second, kicking 5.2 to 1.2 to take back the lead by five points at half time. They increased that lead to 16 points at three quarter time. Monbulk had all the run in the last but could not convert, kicking 2.3 to 1.2 and giving Olinda the win, albeit not a convincing one. Olinda Ferny Creek best: C. Beattie, L. Hill, J. Charge (4 goals), S. Atkinson, O. Raszkiewicz, D. Troutman. Monbulk best: N. McPherson, C. Griffiths, L. Hancock-Wolfe, A. Smith, J. Major, S. Williams. Upwey Tecoma 12.23.95 d Belgrave 3.7.25 Upwey hangs onto second spot after a win over Belgrave which probably should have been by a lot more, considering the scoring shots. Upwey was in control from the first bounce, kicking 6.7 behinds in the first. The second quarter was a good contest but the damage had been done. Upwey was wasteful in front of goal in the third, kicking 2.5 to one behind but the margin was now 59 points. It was all over, bar the shouting, in the last but the margin should have been bigger come the final siren. Upwey Tecoma best: P. Broecker, K. Grenda (1 goal), L. Beacom, B. Neil, S. Waters (5 goals), W. Duncan. Belgrave best: M. Brown (1 goal), T. Stubley, M. Sproules, L. Toole, H. Byron, J. McDermott. Wandin 15.9.99 d Mount Evelyn 11.4.70 Wandin is sitting fourth, leaving Mount Evelyn two wins off the pace in sixth after a 29-point win on Saturday. Mount Evelyn got the early lead by six points at quarter time. Wandin kicked 5.5 to two goals in the second to go into half time with 17-point lead. Mount Evelyn burst out in the third quarter, shell-shocking Wandin, kicking 6.3 to 1.2 and taking a lead of 14 points into the last quarter. Mount Evelyn must have spent all their chips as they were legless in the last while Wandin found theirs and kicked 8.1 to 1 goal 24 MAIL

to turn it around and maintain their share of top spot. Wandin best: J. Ladner (1 goal), H. Byrne (3 goals), P. Bruzzese (1 goal), T. Leech-Hines, D. Hirst (1 goal), B. Smith. Mount Evelyn best: J. Beamish, J. Fellows, B. Lord (1 goal), C. Urquhart, K. Van Beek (1 goal), S. Martin (1 goal). Woori Yallock 13.21.99 d Warburton Millgrove 10.8.68 Woori Yallock sits third after a solid performance against Warburton. The first quarter started off tight with only four points separating them at quarter time. Woori Yallock got their skates on in the second and extended their lead to 25 points at half time. The third was again a good contest but the margin still stretched out to 36 points. The last quarter was a win to Warburton, kicking 3.5 to 2.6, which is a small consolation. Woori Yallock best: J. Williams (5 goals), M. Lowe, E. Clasby, T. Anderson, K. Thompson, A. Marsh (3 goals). Warburton Millgrove best: T. McKail, M. Wappett, T. Marr (1 goal), T. McKenzie (1 goal), S. Noonan, A. White (4 goals). Division 2 Seniors Football Yea 7.10.52 d Alexandra 5.12.42 Yea is in fourth spot after a tough game against Alexandra. Yea was in front all day, but Alexandra certainly challenged them. Yea's lead was only seven points at quarter time. They managed to extend that to six points at the main break but were by no means looking comfortable.

They broke it open in the third, kicking 3.1 to 1.1 to have a lead of 18 points. Neither side could find the big sticks in the last, Yea with five behinds, Alexandra with 1.7 the side had every chance of turning this game around but for its inaccuracy. Yea best: H. Jarvie, A. McCarthy, D. O'Dwyer, A. Walsh, A. McSpeerin, J. Salau. Alexandra best: W. Goonan, J. Goonan, D. Rouget, B. Kapakoulakis (1 goal), L. Ragg, P. Ferguson. Kinglake 17.15.117 d Thornton Eildon 4.10.34 Kinglake banked its second win for the season by defeating Thornton. Kinglake got off to a healthy start and had a lead of 31 points at quarter time. They extended that lead to 46 points at half time. A six-goal third quarter to four behinds put them 80 points up and home safely withy the four points. The last quarter was a good contest with both sides kicking goals but it was Kinglake's day. Kinglake best: J. Crowe, J. Nixon (4 goals), J. Hamilton (2 goals), M. Quinton (2 goals), J. Chalmers (3 goals), J. Whitehead. Thornton Eildon best: B. Azzopardi, T. Carpenter, A. Phelps, J. Dickson (1 goal), J. Scotland, A. Sporton. Yarra Junction 14.15.99 d Powelltown 10.17.77 Yarra Junction sits third with a two-game buffer between them and Yea after a not-soconvincing win over Powelltown.

Yarra Junction started the better, going into quarter time with an 11-point lead. Powelltown lifted in the second with a 16-point turnaround to lead at half time by five points. Yarra Junction held Powelltown scoreless in the third and arrested the lead back by 28 points at the last change. Powelltown fought back in the last kicking 3.7 to 3.1 but inaccuracy was the killer for Powelltown at the final siren. Yarra Junction best: L. Hoffman, R. Bombinski, T. Fennell, D. Brookes, N. Walsh, J. Bombinski. Powelltown best: L. Walker, B. Wratten (1 goal), J. Mitchell, N. Moody, L. Middlemast, J. Bruhn. Seville 15.15.105 d Gembrook Cockatoo 6.5.41 Seville is on top after a nice win over fifthplaced Gembrook. Seville peppered the goals in the first with 11 scoring shots to one and had a handy lead of 25 points at quarter time. Gembrook bounced back in the second and reduced that margin to just eight points at half time. Gembrook failed to add to their score in the third while Seville kicked 6.6, putting the game out of reach of Gembrook. Gembrook could only kick 1.5 to 4.1 in the last to give Seville another win. Seville best: G. Fraser (1 goal), J. Wilkinson, N. O'Keefe (1 goal), J. Fraser (6 goals), P. Muscara (1 goal), M. Timmermeister. Our budding soccer stars Monbulk Rangers Soccer club hosted 120 primary students from six local schools in a round robin tournament on Tuesday 26 June. Monbulk coach Sam Wilson was thrilled with the response from Emerald, Menzies Creek, Selby, Macclesfield, Cockatoo and Gembrook primary schools, where she has been holding soccer clinics to encourage participation in the sport. Emerald won the girls' competition for the day while the Selby boys were victorious. "It was great to see such strong competition from the students and I am looking forward to spreading the word about soccer to other schools in our region," Wilson said. She has been selected to coach the state junior girls in the Victorian Churches Football Association's national titles. Meanwhile, the Monbulk Rangers Lions remain undefeated in the Under-13 Boys East Football Federation of Victoria competition, moving ahead of Ringwood FC to the top of the ladder. The Lions farewelled dynamic midfielder Will Thurlow, whose family is moving from Healesville to Singapore where he'll receive coaching from Manchester City.

Opening community doors Nominations are open for the fifth annual Australia Post One Netball Community Awards. The awards celebrate individual and community efforts to engage and support diverse communities with netball. The awards recognise individuals, clubs and associations who go above and beyond. "We believe welcoming and inclusive sporting environments improve attitudes and behaviours towards people from different backgrounds, building empathy and understanding," Australia Post marketing and community general manager, Andrea Pearman, said. "We're excited to celebrate those who open their netball club doors, welcome new faces and use the power of sport to help communities work better for everyone. Past winners enabled netball participation and inclusion for people with disabilities, LGBITQ communities, multi-cultural and indigenous Australians, socio-economically disadvantaged, remote and rural communities. Caitlin Thwaites is a Collingwood Magpies and Australian Diamonds netball player and

Australia Post One Netball Ambassador. She'll spend time with the award-winners. "I feel incredibly privileged to meet people from towns and cities across Australia doing such extraordinary things to break down barriers in the community through netball, which really goes back to the grassroots level of what I love about the sport," she said. "It's truly inspirational to have such amazing people in our clubs and associations and to have them recognised through these Awards spreads the goodwill and encourages others to get involved." Netball Australia CEOMarne Fechner said sporting clubs were "a great way to bring people together, breaking down barriers to open the door to people regardless of race, religion or gender". Nominations for the Australia Post One Netball Community Awards close at midnight on Sunday29 July. An independent judging panel will select up to eight winners and announce them on Thursday 16 August. Visit onenetball.org.au.

Sculpture has a message A Gippsland artist has created a giant carshaped brain with legs to show Victoria's youngest drivers how vulnerable they are when driving. The Transport Accident Commission's Green Man Grants are supporting Emma Cornwall to create a sculpture that resembles a car made from brain matter. The sculpture is named 'driving us mindless' and it highlights the vulnerability of people while they're on the road. Instead of wheels, the car features sour pairs of legs that represent a human's in ability to compete with technology's rapid development - showing the focus and control needed to drive safely, despite advancing technology. The sculpture also has a glass windscreen, doors and exhaust that appear to be consumed by the brain. Emma completed the sculpture at her home in Thorpdale, receiving help from her parents, the local mechanic, as well as Melbourne-based artist and mentor, Katie Lee. The Green Man Grants challenge young people between 18 and 25 to create a project that sends a strong road safety message to their peers. The projects have to fit in with the briefs: vehicle safety, vulnerability and shared responsibility. Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, said it was a rewarding project. "These grants challenge recipients to think

Emma thinking about road safety and developing new and innovative ways to share crucial messages." Meanwhile, TAC chief executive officer, Joe Calafiore, said the initiative needs support.

"Young drivers are one of the highest risk groups on our roads with inexperience, lifestyle factors, risk-taking behaviour and using older, less safe cars, making them vulnerable to crashes."

Something new to RAV about with Toyota’s latest SUV

The latest RAV4 is packed with exciting features. 179482 features in both petrol and hybrid models to meet the demand of providing a highly responsive, yet fuel efficient driving experience. An eight-speed direct-shift automatic transmission is mated to the petrol version while hybrid variants are equipped with a continuously variable transmission. An available new all-wheel-drive system can send 50 per cent of engine torque to the rear wheels and distribute it to the left or right

rear wheel for improved handling. A new 2.0-litre petrol engine will also be available, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Toyota Australia's vice-president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said RAV4 would be the first hybrid SUV in the company's local model line-up. "The combination of Toyota's latest hybrid system and an advanced new petrol engine will deliver impressive power output and exceptional energy efficiency," Mr Hanley said. "Toyota's hybrid technology will perfectly complement the work of engineers who have dialled-up the fun-to-drive factor by advancing every aspect of RAV4's performance, handling and ride comfort. "Together with the robust exterior styling and sophisticated interior, the new RAV4 will offer even greater appeal to people with active lifestyles who want to explore the city, make a weekend trip to the country or head off the beaten track." RAV4 is one of Toyota's most popular vehicles in Australia with cumulative sales of more than 290,000 vehicles.

The popular SUV has achieve record sales in each of the past five years and in 2017 passed 20,000 deliveries for the first time in a calendar year. RAV4 has continued its success in 2018, setting January and February records, culminating in the highest sales for the first two months in the vehicle's 24-year history. The 2019 RAV4 is the second SUV to adopt a TNGA platform, joining the C-HR that was launched early last year. The New York reveal also included a RAV4 Adventure model inspired by Toyota's off-road vehicle heritage. It features a more rugged exterior with an aggressive grille, fog light surrounds, large over-fenders and unique wheel design. The new RAV4 comes standard with new active-safety technologies and capabilities that enhance protection. Its equipment includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection*, autonomous emergency braking, all-speed radar cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist and automatic high beam.

Australian motorists will be offered advanced hybrid as well as petrol power when the allnew RAV4 sports-utility vehicles (SUV) is launched here next year. The fifth-generation RAV4, making its global debut at the New York international motor show, features a new platform that results in a better driving position and improved dynamics due to its lower centre of gravity and greater torsional rigidity. Designers focused on the key words "adventure" and "refined" to produce a bolder and tougher presence with a lower, wider exterior profile and more sophisticated and premium interior with increased rear legroom. The adoption of a Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform results in a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks for stable, confident driving while shorter overhangs enhance new RAV4's ability to overcome rugged terrain. A new multi-link rear suspension and chassis rigidity that has been improved by 57 per cent contribute to improved handling, minimum interior cabin noise and excellent ride comfort. A new 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder engine
