PARKLEA'S DRIVE TO HELP NEEDY THE PARKLEA Winter Food Drive is on again this year, with even more locations to donate at throughout the Cardinia Shire. Now in its third year, the annual Food Drive provides members of the community with the opportunity to donate nonperishable food items to help fill the pantries of disadvantaged families. This year Parklea is aiming to reach even more families with a number of local businesses volunteering as drop off locations. During July and August, local residents can drop non-perishable food to Club Officer, Montessori Beginnings Child Care at Timbertop Estate, Cardinia Life (Aligned Leisure), Arena Cafe at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop Sales Suite. "With the support of local businesses this year, we hope to be able to provide more families with much needed food during the colder months," said Jarod Mills, sales and marketing manager at Parklea Developments. "As a developer in the South East, Parklea is committed to helping improve the wellbeing and quality of life of those living in and around our communities," said Mr Mills. The Winter Food Drive is one of Parklea's community initiatives including a Christmas gift drive, aimed at supporting local families doing it tough. Parklea also supports a number of local community groups, events, and charities throughout the South East. All Food Drive donations will be distributed via The 4Cs, a Pakenham-based charity that supports local families and individuals with food, shelter, counselling, training and financial relief. In one year alone, the charity distributed 500 tonnes of food. Items most needed by The 4Cs are tinned fruit and vegetables, tuna cans, legumes, long life milk, pasta sauce, dry pasta, soup, rice and other grains. VANESSA Nicholls of Harcourts Berwick was named the Number One Property Manager in Australia at the recent Harcourts National Awards night. Mrs Nicholls won the award for Victoria last year and went one better in 2017-18, taking out the national title. The Harcourts Australia National Awards were held on 30 May on the Gold Coast and culminated the three-day national conference held at The Star. The awards recognised outstanding performers across 31 categories in residential and commercial sales, property management and business achievements “I am honoured to receive this recognition for my team’s outstanding service to both our landlords and tenants,” Mrs Nicholls said. “Being number one in Australia where there are many fabulous property managers in over 400 offices around the country is not an easy thing to do. “Accepting the award, I give special thanks to Emily Riko for her outstanding efforts daily to make our property management service stand out from others, along with the entire Harcourts Berwick team.” Mrs Nicholls also gave thanks to the Harcourts Berwick team, who she said had supported her and provided "a positive, professional and inspiring environment to work in every day". “They really are a well-oiled machine of professionals. COUNCIL will fork up $140,000 for detailed sketches of a proposed sporting precinct in Officer's Arcadia Estate. The hefty sum has been awarded to SPORTENG, an engineering firm based in Hawthorn. Two multi-use ovals - which will incorporate Australian-rules football, rugby league, and cricket - will be included in the draft, alongside several bowling greens, a walking track and 230 car spaces. While sporting groups have welcomed the move, ratepayers have expressed scepticism at the "expensive" preliminary stage. According to planning documents, Cardinia Shire wants to lure a broad range of sports to the new Comely Banks Recreation Reserve, including Gaelic, soccer and gridiron. Joel Lodge, a former athlete for the Berwick Miners Gridiron Club, is hopeful the new facilities could rejuvenate the sport in Melbourne's south-east. "One of the big reasons for the club withdrawing from the league was because it was quite difficult to secure grounds for play with the prominence of AFL," he said. "I think that was one of the big barriers from the sport's success - as well as people not having a sound knowledge of American football. 'Hopefully the more the shire invests in physical activity, the more sports there will be to play." Cardinia Shire has liaised with AFL Victoria and Cricket Victoria for input into the design of the facility. Some have questioned the merits of paying $140,000 for a one-off concept, rather than hiring a qualified designer to service a range of projects. "I understand the need for more facilities,

It is hoped the new sporting facilities could rejuvenate sports like gridiron across Cardinia Shire. but it seems like they (council) could have got a lot done with $140,000," Harry Osbourne said. "Perhaps it would be more economical to hire a designer or an artist than pay these huge lump sums to companies outside of the region and sent our money elsewhere. "I've got a handful of things down my street where that money could've gone." In a report by council's project manager Thomas Nicholls, a number of benefits are touted by the development. The new facilities aim to: "provide active and passive recreation facilities to meet the needs of residents, increase opportunities for residents to participate in a range of sport, recreation and leisure activities, and provide accessible facilities to meet identified community needs." The decision to award the $140,000 tender was evaluated against a criteria which considered value for money, compliance, relevant experience and quality. ●
