A Berwick man has been charged following the discovery of a woman’s body in Cranbourne North on Saturday 7 July. A 36-year-old woman was located deceased at the Maria Court property just after 10.30am following reports of a fire. Homicide Squad detectives charged the 38-year-old man with one count of murder. Remanded in custody, he will appear in court at a later date. Detectives arrested the 38-year-old man at the residential address in Berwick just before 4pm on Saturday 7 July. All parties who were involved in the incident are believed to be known to each other. The occupants who lived at the address have been located safe. Police will await the results of a post mortem regarding the exact cause of death. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon, who also lives in the neighbourhood where the incident occurred, said the street was swamped with emergency services in a street that is usually “peaceful.” “The whole area was blocked off for a good part of the day,” she said. As a resident for more than 20 years, she said the incident came as such a shock; she began to shake from being upset. “It was devastating in itself and even more so as it was in my backyard and my concerns remain with those dear children,” she said. “It gives me an insight into how communities feel when these things happen but it also strengthens my resolve to make sure that our communities remain safe.” Another neighbour, Bill, who did not wish to reveal his surname, said although he didn’t know the family, the incident came as a shock. “We didn’t know much about her at all. We never heard any fighting between her and her husband,” he said. “Everyone is saying how much of a wonderful person she is.” Bill said he regularly heard children playing on the trampoline and the man would often take his boat out fishing.

What got you interested in dancing and how are your dancing sessions going at the Balla Balla Community Centre? I have danced with a passion since I was tiny. In childood just loved tap dancing and later jazz. Have danced ballroom since tje 1980s and have competed too. In Victoria. had to start from the beginning again with ballroom and latin, having moved here from Tasmania. Have had tremendous support from family, and also Balla Balla Community Centre. So far classes are going well. On Mondays I have one class with 15 names enrolled in it, and a second evening class on the same night will begin next term, so it's all systems go! What is something people don't know about you? I have done an Honours Degree in Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Tasmania, lectured and tutored there for 10 years and then decided to concentrate on my dance teaching - a different kind of political exercise! Had a Ballroom and Latin studio in Launceston for 13 years, during which time I studied to be accredited in all styles with Dancesport Australia - and have now moved to Victoria. What is the most memorable moment in your life? Taking my Mum back to England after many years in Australia, to see all our relatives during 1998. Also on this trip travelled to Paris which was bedlam, as they had just won the World Cup! A very exciting time. They are on the cusp now of doing this again! In relation to Political Science studies, travelling to Canada in 2006 to do research on forestry issues, and interviewing candidates all over beautiful British Columbia. What is your favourite television show? The Poldark series on ABC TV. Never miss it! Which AFL football team do you follow? Brisbane Lions, who are purring at present,

Keeping myself and family very healthy and happy. Also maintaining contact with old and valued friends everywhere, and nurturing new ones. Where would your perfect holiday destination be? Would enjoy going anywhere in the world but as I am a devoted Elvis fan from way back, hope to go to Memphis to visit Graceland and see the King.

Man on murder charge A man has been charged following the discovery of a woman's body in Hampton Park on Saturday 7 July. Police were called to the Redwood Avenue address just before midday where the 45-yearold man was arrested at the scene. Homicide Squad detectives have charged the man with one count of murder. He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday 9 July. The woman had been identified and the cause of death is yet to be determined. All parties involved are believed to be known to each other and police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident at this stage. Domestic Violence Victoria (DVR) said attitudes needed to be challenged that condone discriminatory attitudes towards women. "The best evidence on the likelihood of perpetration of domestic violence is attitudes towards women and attitudes towards violence," said DVR chief executive Fiona McCormack said. The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review report showed 80 per cent of the 152 intimate partner homicides in Australia between 2010-2014 were committed by a man killing his current or former partner. Sex offender accused of grooming teen By Cam Lucadou-Wells A registered-for-life sex offender has been refused bail on allegations of persuading a 15-year-old girl to perform a sexual act on Facebook. Richard Kelly, 34, appeared at Dandenong Magistrates' Court after police raided and seized electronic devices from his room at a Cranbourne boarding house on 9 July. He was accused of grooming the girl for about a year through a Facebook pseudonym account, informant Detective Senior Constable David Matthews told the court the same day. She had allegedly told him she was 14 on the first occasion they spoke in April 2017. Over the following months, Kelly allegedly asked if she liked cuddles and requested a photo of her. He responded: "Wow you're very cute", the court was told. She was asked if she smoked or did drugs like "meth", where she lived and if she wanted to do a video call, the court heard. "Can I have another picture of you, babe?" he allegedly wrote. In April this year, Kelly communicated with the girl on his mobile phone, the court heard. "Hey, it's Richard", he said before allegedly directing her to "now delete our conver-

sation on Facebook". That night, he encouraged her to send an explicit image, leading to a charge of penetrating a child under 16, the court heard. After the girl broke off contact, Kelly allegedly contacted her with another Facebook pseudonym account. Kelly used the profile picture of a 15-yearold boy on the account, with the girl unaware of the 'boy's' true identity, Det Sen Const Matthews said. Kelly was also charged with failing to report the messages as part of his reporting obligations as a registered sex offender. He had also failed to inform authorities of a new mobile phone he used to contact the girl in May 2018 - a day or so after his release from jail. He had been imprisoned for numerous unreported child contacts, email addresses and Facebook accounts, Det Sen Const Matthews said. Det Sen Const Matthews said there were more charges expected to be laid after further examination of Kelly's devices. Police seized several mobile phones from Kelly's residence that he claimed he was repairing, the court heard. Kelly had made partial admissions to contacting the girl and receiving photos from her, but claimed he couldn't remember the specific messages, the informant said.

In July 2016, Kelly was convicted, put on the state's sexual offender's register for life and sentenced to a 30-month corrections order, the court heard. Representing himself, Kelly told the court that he needed to look after a depressed and anxious close relative. He cooked for the relative, and supervised their medication, he said. Kelly attended drug-and-alcohol and community work appointments as part of his corrections order, but hadn't received any sexual offenders' treatment programs, he told the court. During the recent bail hearing, he had to prove 'exceptional circumstances' due to the serious charge and being on a community corrections order at the time. Magistrate Pauline Spencer ruled Kelly failed to produce "special, different or outof-the-ordinary" evidence to justify bail. Kelly was also an unacceptable risk of reoffending if released, Ms Spencer said. The "quite concerning" allegations surfaced despite Kelly spending two months in jail as well as being on the sex offenders' registry and a corrections order at the time, she noted. He was remanded to appear at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 13 July.

A $20k gift Narre Warren's Christians Helping In Primary Schools (CHIPS), a non-profit organisation that provides support to children and their families who have suffered trauma in their lives, has collected a $20,000 windfall. In celebration of a 100 year legacy of giving, Commonwealth Bank employees are giving $10 million to community organisations, with 1,000 Centenary Grants valued at $10,000 being distributed. $500m grant for Monash Monash Freeway's notorious gridlock is set to be eased with 36 kilometres of new lanes to be added - made possible by a $500 million grant from the Turnbull Government. Major construction on the Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 project is scheduled to start in mid-2019 and is expected to be completed in early 2022. Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said he has long campaigned to make the upgrade a reality. He said the project included the upgrade of the Beaconsfield Interchange and the extension of O'Shea Road in Berwick. "The freeway will be widened between Warrigal Road and Eastlink and between Clyde Road and Cardinia Road, cutting an estimated nine minutes off a peak-hour trip between Pakenham and the city," Mr Wood said. "This is going to deliver smoother and safer

commutes for my community, ensuring people get from work to home sooner so they can spend less time in traffic and more time with the family." Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the added lanes "will slash congestion and improve travel times for drivers across Melbourne's south east while also ensuring safer journeys." "Motorists make more than 470,000 trips on this corridor each day and that's why the Turnbull Government is investing $500 million in this vital project - to help ensure those trips become quicker and easier for Melburnians," Mr Fletcher said. "There are also important economic benefits - this upgrade will improve access to the growing Monash and Dandenong National Employment and Innovation Clusters, major employment centres incorporating Monash

University, Monash Medical Centre and Dandenong Hospital. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the State Government was pleased to see the Commonwealth getting behind the urgently needed project. Court hears road-rage dad was on the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;angry pillsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has blamed a violent attack on his adopted daughter and her partner in their car in Hallam on disagreeable medication, a court has heard. The 43-year-old man had texted complaints to the partner - who was a mechanic - about not repairing his vehicle. He then drove up the partner's driveway in Hallam. He got out of the car yelling, grabbed and tore the partner's T-shirt and punched him in the face, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 9 July. The partner fended some blows. With his hearing-aid knocked out and bleeding from his ear and face, he fled on foot.

Later, the female victim has pulled up beside the accused's car at Princes Highway and Fitzgerald Road, Hallam. She made a gesture to her adopted father as if to ask what is going on. The accused got out of the car, yelling insults at her. He punched the windscreen so hard that it caused a large crack, and head-butted the daughter's face and pushed her in the face with an open hand while she was inside the car. He also punched the partner through an open passenger window. Defence lawyer Bernard Moore said the man was on "substantial medication that didn't agree with him" at the time. The psychiatric drug that he'd taken for

depression was "messing with his mind", Mr Moore said. "He's ended up in hospital four days later." The man was since receiving counselling, Mr Moore said. According to a clinician's report, the man was misusing prescription drugs, the court heard. The female victim was the daughter of the accused's dead sister. The man had brought her up as his daughter for most of her life, Mr Moore said. The head-butt occurred while the accused putting his head through the open window. But it wasn't in the "normal sense" of a headbutt, the lawyer told the court. The dispute was "all about some monies he was owed". The partner was supposed to re-

pair his car and he didn't, Mr Moore said. "Things between them are now very good." Police submitted for the man to be put on a corrections order due to his prior history and the nature of the assaults. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she would fine the man given the 16-year gap in offending - though a CCO was "in range". The father-daughter relationship represented a "breach in trust" - and was an aggravating factor in sentencing, she noted. Ms Spencer took into account the man's hospital admission soon afterwards, as well as his ongoing mental-health treatment. Housing lots pledge By Brendan Rees New housing lots for new homes in the City of Casey would be created to tackle the housing affordability crisis - if a Victorian Coalition Government is elected. Opposition leader Matthew Guy has committed to fast-track the release of 290,000 residential housing lots in the hope of giving more Victorians the chance of owning their own home. "This fast track will happen alongside our long-term strategic work to decentralise population growth to regional Victoria, to take pressure off Melbourne and ensure it does not become unliveable," Mr Guy said. An elected Liberal Nationals Government would fast-track the completion of the planning of all metropolitan Precinct Structure Plans by 30 June 2020. Mr Guy said housing lot prices in Casey had increased 35 per cent, jumping from an average of $270,000 in 2016, to $365,000 in 2017. For the outer areas of Melbourne the price of a housing lot has spiked by 54 per cent under Labor, Mr Guy added. South Eastern Metropolitan MP, Inga Peulich, MLC said housing prices in Casey had "spun out of control." "The Andrews Labor government has made it harder to live in Casey by introducing 12 new taxes and turning a blind eye to inflated housing prices," she said. "Fast-tracking housing developments in Casey will help first-time homebuyers and residents by alleviating the cost of living pressures." However, Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) executive officer Leanne Petrides said while the Liberal's policy may assist a number of people purchase a home of their own, there were still more than 82,000 Victorian families and individuals on

A teacher pleading guilty to his third recent drink-driving offence has the spectre of jail looming over his head. Vincent Lam had been at a good friend's wedding before being detected with a bloodalcohol reading of 0.112 at Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills just after 3.30am on 25 March, a court heard. He was also unlicensed to drive at the time having been disqualified from driving for previous drink-driving. Police had observed Lam had difficulty staying in his lane while driving that night, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 9 July. Lam asked the court to take into account his guilty plea, that his alcohol reading was not in the "high range" and that he'd signed up for a drink-driving awareness course. He told the court that he wanted to continue to work as a "civil servant". "I keep my personal and my professional life separate," he said. "I was at a very good friend's wedding ... It was an error of judgement." Magistrate Pauline Spencer was concerned that the "obviously smart and hard-working" teacher had been previously detected at 0.14 in 2014 and 0.06 in 2015. "Why are you making such important errors of judgement multiple times? "You can imagine someone doing it once, even imagine them doing it twice but three times? What's going on in your head?" Lam's sentence was deferred on condition that he attended the drink-driving course and that he underwent counselling. His licence was disqualified for 22 months from 9 July. Lam faces final sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 October.

Not in keeping with old Berwick I read with great interest the article: VCAT fight for ‘Old Berwick’ in The Berwick Star News (28 June) on the residents of Wilson Street, Berwick fighting proposed two by two-storey units with basement garage. Reason: “Not in keeping with old Berwick”. And that the City of Casey is going in to bat for them against developer at VCAT. City of Casey reasons are: Neighbourhood character. Density. Site coverage. Building setbacks. Lack of separation. Landscaping and private open space. Spare a thought for your neighbours living in the old Narre Warren estate, with proposed Planning Amendment C198 by City of Casey for three to four-storey units. Picture this: Service Road, Lancaster Avenue, Moran Street and Sweeney Drive - boarded by Stewart Avenue and Narre Cranbourne Road. Just imagine how many three to four-storey units can be built in an area this size and consider the reasons by City of Casey for two units. It seems a bit unfair. Plant a tree instead Pioneer Park in Peel Street, Berwick, is the former Berwick Primary School site, which concerned citizens of Berwick worked long and hard to raise money to purchase the site and also, I believe, obtained grants to secure the land as a park - subsequently named Pioneer Park. It is scandalous that the City of Berwick sees fit to re-name this park in any one person’s name. Surely a tree planted to honour the former councillor would be sufficient. W. and M. The lack of available land in Casey and Cardinia has caused land prices to skyrocket - median lot prices are now $375,000 and $344,000 respectively, with Cardinia’s median increasing 41.2 per cent in the last 12 months alone. (Gazette, 4 July). This week Opposition Leader Matthew Guy announced that an elected Liberal Nationals Government will fast track the release of an additional 290,000 residential housing lots across Melbourne’s growth areas, including Casey and Cardinia. This land was rezoned for urban growth in 2010 but bureaucracy and red tape has so far kept it from the market. Areas for employment are included with the areas allocated for residential housing. A greater supply of titled land should drive price competition and help more Victorians own their own home. Of course with more land must come more infrastructure - the Liberals have recently an-

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On the 4 July, the Cranbourne Star News published a story about the State Government announcing a site had been secured at 50S Eliburn Drive, Cranbourne East to start work on the Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary School. The story created some strong opinions. Here is how they reacted online: Ryan Loose: Somebody should tell this Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne that the developer who owns the land to the east of Smiths Lane in Botanic Ridge where a new Primary School has been planned has refused to develop the land for five years and have been given a further five year extension by Casey Council. This same developer contributed thousands of dollars to the current Mayor of the City of Casey's failed Liberal candidate 2014 State Election campaign. Perhaps there is an investigative journalist at Cranbourne Star News who might like to do a bit of digging?! Narrelle Osborne: I think it's great the area is getting more primary schools but they need more secondary colleges to keep up with demand. Four different secondary colnounced a $30 billion road package including an East West Link and North East Link and the removal of 55 intersections to get Melbourne moving. Closer to home, the Liberals will ensure McGregor Road is duplicated and the Pakenham Bypass interchange completed with new entry and exit lanes; the busy roundabout at Racecourse Road and Bald Hill Road will also be removed by grade separation, allowing continuous traffic and removing the

They're the unsung heroes, tirelessly helping others without asking much in return - except for a loving pat. In honour of their services, a memorial was unveiled at KCC Park in Skye on Sunday 8 July which paid tribute to all defence and service dogs that have died while serving in the protection of Australia and its citizens. The event, organised by the Service Dogs Memorial Committee and Dogs Victoria, was officiated by the patron of Dogs Victoria, Peter Hitchener OAM. Dignitaries included City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett and Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon who laid tribute wreathes for all dogs that have given their lives. The Last Post was performed at the conclusion of the ceremony. More than a million dogs have served the country with the Australian Defence Force since WWI. Service Dogs Memorial Committee founder Merilyn Syme OAM said the memorial provided a permanent tribute dedicated to the courage and sacrifice of canines. "We felt we should have something ac-

knowledging our passion we feel about our dogs to honour all dogs," she said. "It is extremely important; it's taken us a couple of years to raise the money. We're very proud and very grateful for the people turning out today. "We admire the ability of all breeds of dogs and we want to look after their future and their welfare," Ms Syme said. Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation President Nigel Allsopp said the memorial was a great opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of Australia's war and service dogs. The grand masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition is a recognisable classic that is often used in advertisements and victorious sporting moments. Written in 10 short movements

the programmatic music describes the composer walking around an art exhibition of his friend Hartmann, where each movement is inspired by individual paintings interspersed by a reoccurring promenade theme. BSC recently performed Mussorgsky in a band format. Performing with the CPO has enabled the student to extend their knowledge of the work by playing the full version in a full Symphony Orchestra including additional wind, two harps and celeste. Also in the program is Schuberts 8th Symphony. A lyrical piece that is quite short dubbed as Schubert’s ‘Unfinished Symphony’ as it only contains two movements. The orchestra hopes to build upon its student mentor program for future events and encourages students from within the City of Casey that are passionate about music to enquire about upcoming programs our next concerts rehearsal period commences on in term three. Bail revoked for drug accused By Cam Lucadou-Wells A driver allegedly found with 'ice' as well as prescription drugs such as Viagra in his car in the early morning has been refused bail. Jayden Mitchell had been on bail when he was intercepted by police in Cranbourne about 1.30am on 9 July , a bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard later that day. He had appeared to speed and drive in an "evasive" manner, remand liaison officer Sergeant Christopher Marlow told the court. Mitchell allegedly told police he didn't have his licence and appeared to have difficulty re-

membering his date of birth. Police seized Mitchell's driving licence from a bag behind the driver's seat, Sgt Marlow said. Four grams of 'meth', 50 grams of GHB, a diazepam tablet, a Xanax tablet and Viagra, a drug 'tick book', measuring scales and zip-lock bags were also allegedly seized from the car. Mitchell told police he sold drugs but did not use them, Sgt Marlow told the court. However, Mitchell had priors for using and possessing drugs, he said. He admitted knowingly possessing the drugs, except for the GHB found in one of the door

The Casey Philharmonic - along with students Jeremy, Nicholas, Timothy and director of music co-ordinator Michael Couche from Berwick Secondary College - will perform Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition on 14 July at Bunjil Place under the groups budding new mentorship program. Working amongst seasoned professionals and keen amateurs, the orchestra was set up to give musicians in the City of Casey the opportunity to perform symphonic repertoire at a high standard. Sleep under the stars Casey Council will be hosting the first Casey Homeless Sleep-out at Casey Fields on Saturday 11 August. Being held in conjunction with Homelessness Week, the overnight event is an opportunity for the community and organisations to come together and raise funds for homelessness. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said homelessness is continuing to increase across the municipality and is often an issue that gets overlooked and misunderstood. "Within our City we have over 1,280 people experiencing homelessness. The sleep out is an important opportunity to raise awareness within our community and encourage action," he said. "A range of local organisations, including food vans, crisis support centres and community groups will be attending the event to highlight the services they provide, and the increasing demand being placed on them. "We hope that the event will allow us to not only raise valuable funds for homeless services

Fitness coach Stuart Cunningham of CrossFit Cranbourne spearheaded a GoFundMe fundraiser for Tyson Stanley, 17, as he "deserves to go to the greatest pop culture convention in the world." With the community's help, $25000 was raised for Tyson so he can attend Comic Con an event that draws thousands of comic book, science-fiction, and fantasy lovers in San Diego, California on 19-22 July. Tyson has Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive, an extremely rare connective tissue disease. Simply put, his muscle tissue and connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments are slowly being replaced by bone. It affects one in two million people. The funds will cover flights, accommodation, food, Comic Con tickets, spending money and "Everything he needs to have an epic adventure." "Rather than raising money to help fund cures, because that's already happening, I wanted to do something purely for him," Mr Cunningham said. "He's pretty restricted with the choices he's got - he relies heavily on other people to help." Mr Cunningham completed four gruelling days of fitness challenges from May 2427 including a 7km swim at Mornington bay,

Survey opens on parking By Brendan Rees Casey residents can have their say on parking issues following the launch of a council survey. The online questionnaire will be used to help the council form its parking strategy. It will gauge residents' opinion of "where they feel current parking is not serving their needs." It also asks residents if they support the use of parking technology including sensors and electronic signage. The draft Parking Strategy will provide direction on how council oversees its parking supply and how technology such as the arrival

of autonomous vehicles and ride share programs will impact on the demand for parking resources. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the draft parking strategy would help shape the future of parking management within the municipality. He said Casey had one of the highest rates of car ownership within metropolitan Melbourne with almost 65 per cent of Casey households owning two or more cars. "Our estimated resident vehicle fleet will reach 216,000 by 2026," he said. "With the Casey population expected to

reach over 500,000 by 2041, a shift in the way we think about and plan for parking is required to ensure we can provide a more equitable and liveable City for our residents. "The draft Parking Strategy outlines considerations for the future of parking management and includes mechanisms that aim to manage parking more efficiently and provide optimal parking supply," Cr Ablett said. Narre Warren Business Group spokesman Dale Munckton said its members appreciated council recognising the on-going parking issues effecting businesses in the Verdun/Victor Crescent and Webb Street precincts. "We look forward to working closely with

council to ensure adequate parking is available for our members and businesses within the area. We encourage businesses to provide their feedback to Casey Council online," he said. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the draft parking strategy mentioned in several places about introducing 'paid parking' and questioned whether this was "A disguise for revenue raising." "This document does not detail how the strategy will become council policy or be implemented," he said.

New team to lead business group By Brendan Rees Members of the Narre Warren Business Group (NWBG) gathered for their annual general meeting on Wednesday 4 July. Held at Switch Lifestyle located at Fountain Gate, the evening included guest speakers sharing their insights on current business issues and attendees also having the opportunity to network with local business owners as well as electing its new committee members. Steve Osborne returned as president, joint vice presidents are Dale Munckton and Tara Angelone, Richard Edwards returned as treasurer, Tim Allan returned as secretary and Michael Parker and Rob Wilson were appointed as general committee members. The group, which provides a voice for local business, also discussed car parking within the City of Casey and looks forward to discussing adequate parking strategies with the Casey Council. According to the group's President Steve Osborne, the NWBG will put a focus on growing their membership over the next 12 months. Mr Munckton said Mr Errey told attendees they were "never too old" to start an MBA. The university will be holding a detailed information evening on Tuesday 17 July from 5.30pm - 7.30pm at Atura, Dandenong. Creating an impact to last By Brendan Rees Lea Paton has taken over the reins as president of the Rotary Club of Berwick during a changeover dinner held on Wednesday 4 July. Ms Paton - the first woman to be elected as president in a decade - was humbled by her induction during her speech, saying "I'm looking forward to leading the club in a fun-filled, lighthearted year of inspirational service." "When I joined the Rotary Club of Berwick six years ago I had no idea I would be asked to be on the board within the first year, so the last thing I expected was to be standing here as president," she said. Ms Paton thanked the members of the club for their support and faith in her: "I will do my best to live up to your expectations in the year ahead of me. "I'm anticipating of the continuation of our tried and true projects. "It's not my intention to overload members with extra projects but I'd like to try a few new things, centred around looking after the onus of our community," she said. Ricardo Balancy reflected on his past year as president, addressing more than 87 guests at the 57th changeover dinner at Holm Park Reserve Pavilion. "It's been an immense pleasure, privilege, honour to serve as president of this great Rotary Club," he said. "I've had a great board, some very good people, and I can't thank them enough for all their efforts." Mr Balancy said delivering positive outcomes for the community was a whole club effort. "I think we'll definitely proud, looking back

Bunjil Place soars again City of Casey's new arts and cultural precinct Bunjil Place has won the top award for Public Buildings at the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. The $125m project, designed by leading Australian architectural firm Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt), was awarded the William Wardell Prize. As the winner of the Victorian Chapter, Bunjil Place is now in the running for the Australian Institute of Architects National Award for Public Architecture. The national award winner will be announced in November. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said we are honoured that Bunjil Place has been recognised with a second award win in less than a month. "At the end of May we were delighted to hear that Bunjil Place had taken out the top

honour at the International Design Awards (IDA) 2017," said Cr Ablett. "Award nominations were assessed by an independent design jury and to again see such high recognition received for the iconic design of Bunjil Place is a testament to the contemporary and innovative design that fjmt envisioned for our community facility. "We are proud that the iconic design has created a welcoming and enlivening destination for residents and visitors to enjoy the many exciting entertainment, arts and cultural experiences on offer at Bunjil Place." Bunjil Place opened in October 2017 and comprises a range of community and civic facilities including an 800-seat theatre, multipurpose studio, gallery space, three-level library, outdoor plaza with big screen and function centre.

Gun found in parkland Police have located a firearm believed to have been used in an armed robbery in Berwick on 17 March. The hand gun was found in a parkland opposite Coral Drive and Manatoka Crescent, Hampton Park on 12 April. The firearm was wrapped in green fabric inside a black satchel bag when it was found. Detectives have released an image of the

firearm and satchel bag in the hope that someone may recognise it and can provide further information. Berwick set for big 150th Pakenham, corner of John Street, 1912.

By Brendan Rees Casey Council will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Shire of Berwick will plans underway to host a community event at a historic site. At their 3 July meeting, councillors approved the milestone event to be held on Saturday 1 September at Pioneer's Park. The budget for the proposed big event is $10,300. A report before councillors said the event would feature an 1868 themed family fun day - which is the year the Berwick Shire was formed. A community BBQ, carnival rides, face painting and display of historic local photos is proposed for the event. The rotunda would house speeches, performances and a mock reenactment from the first Council meeting in 1868. "Other 19th century activities could consist of games such as bobbing for apples, egg tossing and sack races and themed activities such as costume dress ups and wood chopping," the report said. Council believes the site would have plenty of flat open space with ample parking. Marquees for displays, food stalls and local organisations taking part in the event will also be arranged.Other venues council had considered in hosting the event was High Street, Berwick and the Old Cheese Factory. Details regarding the celebration will be announced by council later in the year. Berwick Pakenham Historical Society secretary Audrey Dodson said she was pleased Casey Council was recognising the anniversary because "It's important to know how far we've come in 150 years - it's really quite amazing." Ms Dodson said, growing up in the area she had watched Berwick change from a small country town with a single lane highway to a populating suburb.

"I came to the area in 1952 and it's come ahead a lot in that time. You would walk down the street and you would just about to talk to everybody," she said. "There weren't any high schools around there was only Dandenong and Warragul." Casey Cardinia Libraries local history librarian Heather Arnold said census records from 1861 showed 60 people called Berwick home. Now, 155 years later, the population has grown to 46674 according to the 2016 census. Ms Arnold said she grew up at Cora Lynn but recalled driving through Berwick to travel to Melbourne before the Berwick by-pass existed. "I do remember when there was nothing much on the Princes Highway between Dandenong and Berwick," she said. A timeline of significant events from Ms Arnold's research include:

Langwarrin and Carrum Downs went to the City of Frankston from the City of Cranbourne. The City of Cranbourne, Shire of Pakenham and City of Berwick ceased to exist on December 15, 1994. But we amend returns for thousands of taxpayers that leave out some of their income. This can delay your refund or even see you owing money to the ATO. If you wait until mid-August, we will have pre-filled most of your income information for you, to help you get it right to start with.” Pre-fill is available whether you choose to lodge online with myTax, or with a registered tax agent. For those intending to push the boundaries, or perhaps fudge some parts of their return, the ATO has you in its sights. “We are increasing our investment in education and assistance, as well as reviews and audits. This year we are expecting to make contact with more than one million taxpayers either directly or through their agents,” Ms Anderson said. Finally, if you make a mistake, don’t panic. “We know people sometimes make mis-

As tax time 2018 kicks off the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has profiled the five most common mistakes and the personalities most likely to have tax time troubles. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said it’s often simple mistakes and misunderstandings that trip people up. “While we know most people want to get it right, our audits and reviews show that there are five main areas where taxpayers are most likely to get it wrong.” The top five mistakes include taxpayers who leave out some of their income, claim deductions for personal expenses, forget to keep receipts or records of their expenses, claim for something they never paid for and claim personal expenses for rental properties. Ms Anderson says many of the mistakes are avoidable and there are a few things taxpayers can do to make sure their tax time experience is stress-free. “Know what you can legitimately claim. There are three golden rules for work-related expenses. You must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed, it must be directly related to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it,” Ms Anderson said. “This tax time we will be paying close attention to claims for private expenses like home to work travel, plain clothes, and private phone calls. We will also be paying attention to people who are claiming standard deductions for expenses they never paid for.” Tax can sometimes be tricky, but it’s not tricky to keep good records.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. Emerging from the dark By Russell Bennett At 27, Matt Runnalls is a multiple premiershipwinning midfielder from his time at a number of clubs in the local area. Sound relatable? His is a story that’s far from uncommon. In fact, it comes from a situation that’s so eerily similar to that faced by thousands of people across the country. But yet it’s one so often left alone - left unspoken under the guise of a 20-something-year-old’s perceived cloak of invincibility, or the fear or awkwardness of opening up. Since he was 17, he’s battled severe anxiety and depression, which led to several suicide attempts. He’s also lost seven close mates who were facing their own mental health battles and couldn’t find a way through the darkness. So Matt refuses to shy away from his battle. He embraces it and hits people right between the eyes with his cold, hard, truth. It even led to him starting his own foundation, and now a registered mental health charity, Mindfull. Later this month, Matt will head to Casey Stadium in Cranbourne to give a presentation on his mental health journey, focussing in no small part on one factor that most footballers would have dealt with in an on-field sense - resilience. It’s a vital part of his self-disciplined, holistic approach to staying well every single day. “It’s a really good opportunity for those who’re out there to understand - mental illness, or no mental illness, mind health challenges or not, it’s about building resilience and that’s the only reason I keep well,” he said about his presentation, which will be open to the public on 29 July. “It’s basically disciplined approach I have every single day that I go through - in good days or bad - to ensure I have a better tomorrow. It’s just an opportunity for anyone - kids, adults, whoever - to see how someone goes about living with bipolar but also lives a healthy, happy and fulfilling life and is now able to come out of those situations that we find ourselves in that are inevitable - losing a mate, work stresses, relationship issues, financial strain, anything.” So many people are constantly focused on training the physical, but the mental side is just as important. “How can we expect to be healthy and putting the best versions of ourselves out into the world if we don’t put any emphasis on, or work into our mind?” Matt said. “We talk about compassion, we talk about gratitude, we talk about aligning our values, and what we can control in life. “With therapy and medication, you’re putting your wellness in someone else’s hands. It’s all well and good to talk to people about what you’re experiencing - I’m obviously all for that, it’s crucial - but that only works when it’s complemented by being proactive instead of reactive. “We all possess unlimited amounts of com-

Hopefully I’m able to share those experiences so other people don’t have to go through the same things. I’ve lived this journey so other people don’t have to - that’s the way I see it. “This is the beauty of what I talk about - it’s not just mental illness and suicide, it’s mental wellness. This is targeted at absolutely everybody. My focus is on finding value, self-worth, belonging, and purpose. Without those four things, life is pretty shit. “I’m able to bounce out of situations now that would have kept me down and out for weeks or months at a time previously. This is about prioritising things in our daily lives to ensure we have a better tomorrow.” Matt said it was environments, such as football clubs, that could provide a real source of strength or support for those doing it tough.

“It’s in environments like that where people are often really worried about how they are perceived without getting mocked, shamed or embarrassed for talking about the things that really matter,” he said. “But it’s an absolute strength to speak up and show that vulnerability. “The moment I told my club that I was struggling, things became a lot easier for me. “They understand, and if they don’t, they offer you that environment where they have your back. For all those footballers who are out there and have something going on and are worried about speaking to their club - there are some pretty awesome people at football clubs, you’ve just got to get vulnerable and talk about the things that matter.” Mindfull’s Mental Health and Wellness Seminar will be held on Sunday, 29 July from 3.00 to 4.30pm at Casey Stadium. St Kilda legend Nicky Winmar will be the star attraction at Devon Meadows this Saturday as part of the club's NAIDOC Week celebrations. Winmar - an Indigenous Team of the Century member, two-time All-Australian, and two-time Saints best and fairest winner - will be the guest of honour at a Panthers lunch, beginning at noon. Winmar played 251 AFL games across stints at both St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs and became a pioneer for his strong stance against racism, as depicted in 'that' symbolic 1993 photo taken by Wayne Ludbey during Round 4 of that season against Collingwood at Victoria Park. The Lions make a noise By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 11 (SPLIT ROUND) Pakenham coach Ash Green simply won't be drawn into finals talk despite his Lions now within striking distance of Officer in fifth spot. The Lions' stingy defence took its first real scalp of the season in horrendous, torrential conditions at Toomuc Reserve, knocking off a Beaconsfield side battling with injury, 6.10 (46) to 3.4 (22). Despite being just two points away from Doug Koop's Kangaroos and with a superior percentage, Green isn't talking the 'F' word just yet, and wants his side to keep building its form. "We aren't talking finals; we were just looking to beat a side inside the top five to get some enthusiasm in the second half of the year," he said. "We've lost a few games we should have won, so we aren't thinking about finals, we just want to be competitive. We're up against it, so we won't look that far ahead." Missing key cogs in Scott Meyer, Nathan Langley, Lachlan Modica, and the Eagles couldn't quite adjust to the conditions, but remained well and truly in the contest at half time, with both sides kicking just the one goal apiece. The importance of James Harrison (three goals) in the attacking half proved pivotal in the end, with the Lions locking down defensively and managing to find some run in the wet to kick five goals after half time. Green was proud of his side for bouncing back from a lacklustre effort last week. "We were really disappointed in our effort against Tooradin last week, and we made a conscience effort to have a really good week on the track - we had a couple of guys who were out injured, and they put a bit of pressure on the playing group," he said. "We brought a few new players in, so I'm pretty proud of the boys - conditions wise, it was miserable and two sides were out there having a crack, so it wasn't probably the greatest spectacle. "To our credit, we played well, so (I'm) happy with the performance." Stats suggest that Green's side is firming into fifth spot, with his improved defence leaking on average just 82 points, less than Officer. "It's important to have a strong defence, and we've been able to throw different blokes down there at times, and like any good side, you have to be versatile," he said. "We're really happy with our backline, we

While the Wickers still managed to kick 71 points in the rain, it's been a wonderful three weeks of defence that has brought Stewart Kemperman's side back into second spot. Incredibly, the Wickers have conceded over 100 points less than any side in the competition, and are building into their best form. The Wickers jumped out of the blocks to kick three first quarter goals, and steadily built the lead throughout the day as Travis Tuck, Matthew Young, Bryce Rutherford and Madi Andrews dominated the middle. But in defence - despite missing Michael Riseley - the Wickers didn't give the Kangaroos an inch, leaving them precariously hanging onto fifth spot on the ladder. Earlier in the round, back on 9 June, Cranbourne dominated Doveton at home, 35.21 (231) to 3.2 (20). Round 12 will be another split round, with Cranbourne and Tooradin-Dalmore to do battle,

Bright future for brothers By Nick Creely There's something sentimental about family members getting the opportunity to play sport together. It's a unique bonding experience that not only brings healthy competition, but it creates memories that can last a lifetime. The Cross boys- who live in Berwick - are set for long, distinguished football careers, with the Beaconsfield Junior Football Club having the honour of having the talented family in their presence. An astonishing five brothers, Ben (Under 17), Paddy (Under 15), Dan (Under 13), Matt (Under 11) and James Cross (Under 9), are all playing junior football with the club in 2018, which is special for parents, Nancye and Glenn, to witness each and every week when they run out in Eagle colours. Adding to this, their step-brother, Lachlan Modica, is one of Beaconsfield's stars in the seniors, finishing runner-up in the best and fairest last season, but is currently out with an ACL injury suffered against Narre Warren earlier this year. Lachlan kicked 17 goals last season for the Eagles and will also be an exciting player in the future of the club when he recovers from injury, but for now, can pass on his wisdom to his young siblings who are making their way through the ranks at Holm Park. The family has an abundance of talent, with their father and grandparents both having long and successful careers and the boys already racking up best and fairest and league best and fairest awards. Nancye's father was a Noble Park champion during the same era, with both grandfathers watching the boys' games regularly and getting a real kick out of it. It takes not only dedication from the boys' parts, but also the parents, who take the kids to a total of eight training sessions per week,

while dedicating their entire Sunday to watching them play the game they love. The Cross boys are one to watch in the coming years, with plenty more medals and achievements on the way, and in the near future, could all be playing in the very same side.

Laverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Victorian honour By Hayley Wildes For 14-year-old Jacob Laver, ice hockey runs in the family and because of that, it was the natural sport to take up and try to perfect. The Berwick local and Beaconhills College Year 9 student started ice skating when he was nine and began playing ice hockey a year later. He says he took up skating because of his father, Brent Laver; 2016 Australia Ice Hockey League coach of the year and current coach with the Australian under-18 men's national team. Since taking up the sport, Jacob hasn't looked back and after representing Victoria three times previously, in 2018 he will represent his state twice. Incredibly, Jacob has been selected to the Victorian under-15 and under-18 teams. An achievement that will see him head to Newcastle from July 17-21 for the under-18 National Championships and then to Canberra from 1-5 August for the under-15 Championships. Jacob's passion for the sport is unquestioned, playing multiple games and doing up to five practices and gym sessions a week. When Jacob started playing the sport, he was a forward and he admitted he was 'pretty trash', but a switch to defence and intense training program has seen him take his game to the next level. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Jacob's speed on the ice is what sets him apart from his rivals and when an opponent thinks they have a chance at getting past him, he more often than not shuts down their space and halts their momentum. Last year, Jacob and his under-15 Victorian teammates came close to tasting the ultimate success and he is hoping the squad can go one better in 2018. "We came second last year and I think we have a decent team this year. Each team has a pretty even chance." Jacob said. Whilst representing Victoria has seen Jacob travel all over the country, he has also experienced hockey internationally; playing in Canada for the Sylvan Lake Lakers during the 2017/18 Central Alberta Hockey League season. From December 2017 to April 2018, Jacob and Brent were in Canada. Jacob said ice hockey is massive in Canada, much like Aussie Rules is in Victoria. For some games, Jacob and his team were traveling up to six hours, but that was all part of the experience; one that Jacob loved and said he learnt a lot from. He will be returning to Canada in September this year and hopes to receive a scholarship to attend a Canadian college and with that being the bigger picture, he is working hard to make his dream come true.

Berwick College's Basketball Academy is filled with potential and with a great program behind the talented athletes, the school just keeps winning major tournaments. After their senior girls claimed the Victorian College Championship (VCC), along with the under-17 boys and under-19 girls being crowned 3x3 state champions earlier this year, the success continued in late June. Berwick College's Division 1 and Division 2 boys teams (made up of year seven and eight students) claimed their respective Junior VCC crowns and did so in dramatic fashion. For the Division 1 boys, they claimed backto-back State Championships. After drawing with Box Hill in the group games, the boys came back with a vengeance when the two teams met again in the grand final. Berwick College simply wouldn't be denied, taking apart Box Hill on both ends of the court, to record an impressive 33-25 win. What makes their back-to-back championships even more remarkable is the fact that the squad remains undefeated. Chris Pentland, director of the Berwick College Basketball Academy, talked about the team's unbeaten run. "They went through all last year undefeated and then this year they've done the same," he said. "This was the first tournament of the year they'll have a couple more tournaments later

this year - but to this point, they haven't lost any games since they've been with us for a year and a half." In Division 2, Berwick College had two teams representing the school - and they faced off in an epic semi-final. Berwick A squeezed past a defiant Berwick B team, 21-20. The game was thrilling, tough and a testament to the depth of talent the school has. In the grand final, Berwick A had another close battle, this time against Geelong's Saint Ignatius College. After Berwick A jumped out an early lead, Saint Ignatius College came storming home, but Berwick A hung on for a memorable 31-29 win. With the three junior boys teams combining for two state championships and a third placing, the year seven and eight boys from Berwick College certainly made their presence known at the Victorian College Championships. And this is just the beginning for the young guns. The depth of talent and desire to succeed, both individually and collectively, is driving the junior boys basketball program to new heights. "They're a very talented group and with it being so competitive for spots, it's keeps them all working really hard." Pentland said. With championships to win and unbeaten streaks to keep alive, keep an eye on Berwick College as they chase more glory.

Nissan Patrol a big unit By Alistair Kennedy With each road test that we carry out it’s always interested to hear the first impressions the vehicle makes on relatives, friends and even passers-by. Responses generally vary depending on the interests of the viewer but not so with this week’s test, the Nissan Patrol Ti-L, where the reaction has been all-but unanimous …. “Isn’t it BIG!” The tale of the tape confirms that visual impression. It’s nearly 5.2 metres long and just under two metres wide and high, larger all round than its only real competitor the market leading Toyota LandCruiser. Only two variants are offered, both at the top end of Nissan’s equipment range, Patrol Ti and Ti-L. Note that the ‘L’ stands for Luxury unlike other brands’ SUVs where it can mean long wheelbase. The Ti has eight seats with a centre bench in the middle row. The Ti-L drops down to seven seats with two large individual centre seats separated by a large armrest. The Ti is priced from $71,990 and the Ti-L from $88,990. The Nissan Patrol (nee Datsun), has been on sale in Australia for more than 50 years and for most of that time it has featured the square, angular looks that pre-SUV 4WD buyers loved. With the arrival of the current Y62 model in 2016 it switched to a slightly softer, more rounded styling in line with changing buyer expectations. Its size still clearly identifies it as a Nissan Patrol but there’s a new bumper and grille, revised triangular foglight housings and distinctive 18inch alloy wheels. Although it attracted some criticism from Patrol traditionalists in our view it strikes a nice before-and-after balance. Once inside the Patrol - and that won’t be as easy as it sounds for smaller occupants - the cabin is spacious with plenty of head and legroom for the occupants of the first and second

The new Patrol has a slightly softer, more rounded styling in line with changing buyer expectations rows. As is usually the case the two third-row seats are best suited to pre-teens. The outer seats of the second row fold and tumble for access to the third with the latter able to move forward and aft for increased leg or cargo room. The second row can also be folded if you need to haul large items but doesn’t fold flush, so keep that in mind. There are plenty of storage options in various sizes and shapes including a very clever centre console that can be accessed from either the front or second row seats. Even with all seats in place there’s 550 litres of boot storage. With the third row down that

expands to 1500 litres and with the centre row folded there’s a van-like 3000 litres. The Ti rear door is manually operated, the Ti-L’s is powered. As the Patrol is aimed primarily a the US market there’s on diesel option. Both variants are powered by a 5.6-litre V8 engine with 298kW of power and 560Nm of torque, 90 per cent of the latter is available from just 1600rpm. Transmission is through a near-seamless seven-speed automatic. The 4WD drive system engages all four wheels when required, otherwise it defaults to the rear wheels. There is permanent 4WD, low-

You can also use a rotary control to choose from snow, rock or sand surfaces. The infotainment system works via an 8-inch colour touchscreen, which is fairly small for a vehicle of this size. Both models get satellite navigation with 3D mapping and traffic monitoring. There are steering wheel mounted audio controls, and a pair of USB ports on the centre console. Bluetooth pairing, previously a weakness in Nissans, is now much more intuitive. Unusually neither Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is available.
