The Coast Guard raced to the rescue of a sole sailor who was forced to abandon ship when fire started in the engine of his yacht on Friday afternoon. It was lucky the experienced seaman, John Nicholson, had a dinghy to retreat to and a mobile phone with him to call for help. While unlucky to have lost his yacht he was lucky it happened during the day, not too far off land and

With a swell of about a metre he said conditions were comfortable. He said an incorrect report of a flare being let off escalated his rescue and a Westpac helicopter was dispatched, hovering overhead while John waited for rescue. "It was reassuring until the coast
MALE BASHING IN CARPARK A group of men targeted and bashed two men walking through a carpark on Sunday 1 July in Noosa Heads. Police are seeking assistance to help identify the group of men following the assault earlier this month. Police said two men were walking in a carpark just after midnight when they were approached by the men. One of the men then spoke to the pair before punching them both in the head a number of times. The group then fled the scene and both men were treated for non-life-threatening head and facial injuries. Anyone who has information on the incident or can identify the men should contact policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. ●

Apart from a dented pride and a few scratches professional mariner John Nicholson counted himself lucky to walk away after he was rescued by Noosa Coast Guard from his burning yacht about 4.5 nautical miles off Peregian Beach on Friday afternoon. After retiring from a 40 year career John was sailing his 36 ft motor sailer named Atlas north from the Gold Coast with plans to haul it out for a service in Bundaberg and end up in 1770, but an engine fire dashed his dreams."Part of my dream was to sail out of the Gold Coast and not come back," he said. He named the vessel he had owned for 10 years Atlas because she carried his world on her shoulders. John had planned to anchor the night in Tin Can Bay but was off Peregian Beach when it went up in smoke. "My engine had been surging," he said. "I smelt smoke. I saw smoke coming out of the hatch. There's only one way in and out of the wheelhouse. I
guard arrived," he said. Noosa Coast Guard was innundated with calls from people who saw the blaze from the shore. They arrived on the scene, picked up John and used their water hoses in an attempt to extinguish the blaze. John said with more than 400litres of diesel fuel on board it continued to burn. The Coast Guard left the boat still drifting and ablaze about 5pm and brought John back to base with his dinghy in tow. "Noosa Coast Guard did an outstanding job," he said. "These people are happy to put their lives on the line to help others. They deserve all the kudos." Water Police senior constable Nyall Appleyard said a warning was broadcast regularly to all boats in the area to be aware of the burning vessel drifting on the sea. John stayed overnight with a friend at Peregian Springs before his daughter collected him to take him to Agnes Waters on Saturday. ●
Warm clear days had school holiday makers racing for the beach to soak up some sun and surf at Noosa making the beach almost as crowded as it was in summer. The river was also busy with paddlers and picnickers. And if the outdoors isn't your preference there's plenty to do these school holidays indoors. The Ginger Factory at Yandina will be hosting morning bird displays and the Noosa Gallery at Tewantin continues to stage its Imaginate festival to inspire young minds. Noosa Arts Theatre in Noosaville will present One Act Play Festival from 12-21 July and tomorrow evening The J Theatre in Noosa Junction will stage the free Sound Feast from 6pm. COVER STORY Peter Howard with his AM. Photo: Dave Gleeson, Surfshots.
HOWARD'S WAY BY MARGARET MACCOLL
A
fter a culinary career spanning almost five decades Peter Howard still loves to cook. Regarded as one of Australia's most recognised food and wine commentators, presenters and now a Mt Coolum resident Peter's contribution to the food and wine tourism industry was acknowledged earlier this year when he was
awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). It no coincidence the culinary luminary grew up in Beaudesert, an area which is now part of the Scenic Rim and known for its regional food. He could milk a cow by the age of seven and his country upbringing instilled in him a love of the land and a respect for the produce of farmers. "Regional cooking is all about fostering the food that comes from the farms," he said. "The French have been doing it for
thousands of years. For almost 50 years Peter has been promoting Australia's regional food nationally and internationally in the hospitality industry he loves. But the basics he learnt from his parents. "To respect food and never waste it these underlying principles are still with me," he said. "I did gain respect for well-cooked nonflashy nutritious meals with nothing wasted or thrown out."
Military background What is probably less known about Peter Howard is that he served as a national serviceman in the Vietnam War. The outcome for him was mixed. When he returned as a Vietnam Veteran in 1970 at 23 years of age he had posttraumatic stress disorder and his memories were full of the dreadful things he had seen. On the upside his repatriation involved a funded three-year course in cooking and hospitality.

Peter Howard with Ray Martin. After his training Peter began working in hospitality in Brisbane then opened his first restaurant in Rockhampton but it was when his business partner deserted that he really learnt about the hospitality trade. From there he moved to Sydney seeking out anything to do with hospitality. Becoming a celebrity chef His involvement with media began in 1980 after he wrote a letter to 2GB presenter Mike Gibson. "At the time they were rejigging 2GB. I said it was time to talk about food," he said. His first program was for two minutes and featured avocados. The radio program continued for 33 years. Having conquered radio he took on television in 1986 in the same way - by writing a letter to the Nine Network. He began with Ray Martin's Midday Show then for 14 years on the Today Show."I started with a five minute segment," he said. "I introduced it to Australia. No one was doing it on a regular basis." Time constraints for television segments meant there are moments Peter would rather forget. But not so Ray Martin who reminds him, whenever possible about burning the butter for a roux and turning the white sauce into a shabby shade of grey. "I was OK at what I did," he said. "In those days they didn't give chefs a cooking show. I was before my time." Peter said unlike the celebrity chefs of today his focus was on education. Then
a lecturer with Ryde Catering College in Sydney which he did from 1979 to 1988 his on air appearances were an extension of his work. "I just transferred the classroom to television," he said. "It just escalated from there. "I've had an amazing career. I've taken Australian food around the world." Peter's whirlwind of cooking and promoting the value of regional food took him around the country and overseas with presentations at shows, in the media and through his many cooking books. In the main he said his books reflected the value of regional food and the food fashion revolution started in the 1980s, when Asian-style fare was adopted by Aussie cooks. "I could bring a celebrity focus to regional food," he said. "It's all about locally sourced produce the culinary motto du jour, what's in season and cooked simply. "When I represented my country as I did countless times, I was always proud and sometimes not completely prepared. When I was cooking Australian lamb in the National Restaurant Association show in Chicago, the big day out of the six days was Sunday where I and the team had to have 6000 samples ready for the crowd to come by and taste. I did that promotion for five years both in Chicago and LA or San Francisco." His celebrity status did have a down

side with all the fine dining leading to his drinking to escalate to an average of two bottles of wine a day, something that he has now reined back to about two glasses a day, but he concludes the benefits of celebrity far outweighed the negatives. Among his many roles Peter promoted Australian food in America as a supporter of the G'Day USA Program, was on the Australia Day Ambassador program and was for seven years the Chairman of Judges for the National Awards of Excellence for the Australian Restaurant and Caterers' Association. He is founding member of the Australian Culinary Foundation, and patron of the Hospitality Training Network. In 2000 he became very familiar with the regional food movement in Noosa as former chairman of the Noosa Regional Food Group. "I thought what they were doing in those days was exceptional, and I still do," he said. "It's the great restaurants and chefs like Lorri Banks from Bistro C who is a trendsetter. You have people like her who set the goals." With business travel and a hectic Sydney lifestyle behind him Peter, his partner and their dogs enjoy the good life and taking time to visit farmers markets with Yandina a favourite.Cooking remains Peter's love and he continues to attend trade shows, sending proceeds to support the Peter Howard Culinary Scholarships he founded
In action cooking. to support apprentices. Being recognised for his service to the industry with an AM was a true honour for Peter. "I can say that just about all I ever did in those years of working in so many aspects of the hospitality industry, I totally enjoyed," he said. "Sure it was hard work and the mates I formed in those years are still my mates. Accolades are nothing without being able to say thank you to an industry I love." ●

NEWS
RATES INCREASE - A LITTLE Low rate rises were both applauded and blamed for inadequate service delivery when Noosa Council delivered its 2018/19 $128 million Budget at a special meeting last Friday. Mayor Tony Wellington said it was "a mighty achievement by both staff and councillors" to restrict the minimum general rate rise to an average of 2.4 per cent despite significant land valuation increases and increased waste charges flowing primarily from China's refusal to take recycled waste. "Land values in the Shire jumped from a total of $8 billion to $8.9 billion. In effect, this meant that the average increase across the Shire was 11.3 per cent," he said. Cr Wellington said staff had "done a terrific job negotiating with our recycling contractor, Visy, and have managed to keep the waste increase to just $15 per household". About 66 per cent of residents who are on the minimum general rate paid $1,496 for all rates, levies and waste charges last year and will pay an increase of $36 to $1,532 in 2018/19. However Cr Ingrid Jackson said while the budget did the best it could with the funds available keeping rate increases as low as possible affected the delivery of services. "The result is that quite a number of really good projects are cut back or cut out and there never seems to be
NOOSA COUNCIL BUDGET SNAPSHOT
The Park Road boardwalk upgrade continues in the budget. enough staff to deliver the services residents want. For example, the Noosa Parklands Action Plan is still on hold and funding is reduced for the safety upgrade of gravel roads," she said. "I continually get calls and emails from residents who have waited months to get a response about problems with roads, trees, safety and other issues. "We're working from a low population base in Noosa (therefore a low ratepayer base). We've got to have the conversation about whether we want
lower rates or better services. We can't have both." The Noosa Council budget includes a $29m capital works program and $26m for maintenance. The "big-ticket program includes two carry over projects, the Park Road Boardwalk and Noosaville Library refurbishment, $2.5 million bridge upgrades, $4.2m for road resealing and $1.25m on a Cooroy playground. Community groups will receive $925,000 in grants. ●
Noosa Council's capital works budget is big on planning with spending of $1.25m to expand its planning scheme including $676,000 on extra team resources, $214,000 on consultancy and $175,00 on the Climate Change Adaptation scheme. It will spend $500,000 to implement the Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN) project and Transport and infrastructure management designs will receive $500,000. There are no plans for new car parks in the capital works program. Council's administration building at Tewantin will receive $780,000 in work including a new roof for $600,000 and Council's fleet and plant replacements will cost $1m. When it comes to pathways Noosa Heads is the winner with the Park Road Boardwalk claiming $5.1m and Main Beach boardwalk receiving almost $700,000. Cooroy's Maple Street will gain a raised pedestrian crossing upgrade for $75,000 and Peregian Beach an upgraded boardwalk for $140,000. Hastings Street will also gain new CCTV at a cost of $156,000. Noosaville's Library ongoing refurbishment will take $800,000 of the budget and Noosa Aquatic Centre will receive more than $500,000 in upgrades. Two bridges will take the lion's share of the $2.5m bridge upgrades with $1.5 to go to Cooran Old Noosa Road bridge and $973,000 to Cooroy Mary River Road. bridge. ●

NEWS TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS MOOTED
Noosa River.
NOOSA RIVER PLAN COSTS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Council's take over of management of Noosa River from the state government moved a step closer with a draft Noosa River Plan prepared and recommended for release for public consultation. New costs are being recommended under the draft plan, which will be subject to discussion at this month's council meetings.
The plan comes after council recommended the Noosa River Community Jury address key pressures on the river system following a review of the 2004 Noosa River Plan. The draft plan proposes management of land-based and on-river activities, encompassing Noosa freshwater creeks, wetlands, lakes, river, coastal creeks and goundwater. Management responsibilities have focused on anchoring, mooring and

living on the river while other areas addressed include the Noosa River Marine Zones, boating speed limits, marine infrastructure, commercial use of the river, sustainable fisheries, migratory shorebird habitat protection and Hincksia alga blooms in Laguna Bay. Five years have been set down for implementation of the plan which council predicts will lead to better management and environmental outcomes in the long term. â—?
Council's Transport Strategy has moved a step forward with council officers recommending the establishment of a project team and the identification of five "potential solutions". Council officers recommend the new strategy team be composed of a project manager, traffic engineers and consultants and a communications and change consultant. The five Transport Strategy areas identified for further investigation are: 1. Park-and-Ride services 2. The introduction to paid parking in congested areas. 3. Subject to discussions with TransLink, the trial of a high frequency Noosa style shuttle bus to service key destinations. 4. The implementation of Walk and Ride to School programs with supportive schools experiencing significant traffic and congestion issues. 5. Priority transport lanes for sustainable transport modes such as buses, bicycles, scooters and electric vehicles. The Transport Strategy will be on this month's Council agenda. â—?

off point to the battle fields) he was amazed to find he was viewing a movie called the Darkest Hour; the story of Churchill's leadership at the commencement of W.W.2. "I know the subject was based on W.W.2," said Jack, "but it gave us a good feeling for what lay ahead. But then to think that twelve hours later I would be standing in Churchill's underground war rooms in London, the very rooms where the great man worked was, unbelievable." To be selected for the trip, Jack was required to write and present an essay supported by a video of less than 5 minutes and then also explain his thoughts regarding this important period in Australian history. Also as part of the project Jack was required to fully research the background of three diggers; one from his home town, the second in his own age group and for third a family relative who had served in any conflict. The first two had to be from W.W.1 For the local digger Jack chose Henry Buchanan a Gympie digger who lived in Tewantin and had served at Gallipoli and Western Front; a digger who, on returning home made an outstanding contribution to the formation of the Tewantin Noosa R.S.L For this young student of St. Teresa's Catholic College, there were many highlights some of which he said will stay with him forever. ''The bitterly cold dawn service at VillersBretonneux; the laying of our wreath by Isabel Jardine and listening to the Last Post was all very haunting. As we were listening to the Last Post it had started to rain and someone seated behind us remarked ''Maybe God is crying." It is strange to think that was the only time it rained during our ten day tour of the battle fields." Following the service at which he met the Chief of Defence Forces Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, Jack, on behalf of the Tewantin Noosa R.S.L. presented a plaque to a teacher at the Victoria School in VillersBretonneux; the building of which was started and supported by Australian diggers. Others were having lunch with the
people of Hamel; and walking the battle fields of Polygon Wood. It was here that they could still find pieces of shrapnel and grenades, (which they didn't touch) laying in the plowed fields. "This was a walk that really hit home and made us think about what our ancestors had been through." It was during his visit to Menin Gate, (which Jack found very emotional) that after the playing of the Last Post, he again presented a plaque. This time it was on behalf of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (of which Jacks father Rob is an officer) to the Menin Gate Buglers, themselves members of the town Fire Services. "So many names carved in stone, missing believed killed," said Jack. It's the Menin Gate that provides comfort for many families, a place to visit and remember because in the words of Field Marshall Lord Plummer, "He is not missing. He is here." Then perhaps the most emotional of all was the planting of a small wooden cross (presented by the Government to be signed by Jacks fellow students) on the grave of a digger researched by Jack. "It was moments like that that made it all worthwhile," said Jack. However, on a lighter side like all young growing lads Jack listed amongst his memories - the food. "I will not forget these," he said with a smile, "Fish and chips in London, croissants in France and the waffles in Belgium." To show his appreciation on returning, this quite spoken well mannered young ambassador for the youth of our community spoke at a function at the R.S.L organised by Noosa Library and the Tewantin R.S.L. However I feel that the sincerity of this young man was best summed up when he told me, "There were so many graves of young diggers; and also graves with no names. Just the words-- Known only to God.'' ● noosatoday.com.au

NEWS UNLOCKING KOALA GENES University of the Sunshine Coast researchers have been instrumental in a world-first mapping of the full koala genome. USC microbiologist Professor Peter Timms was part of The Koala Genome Project, a collaborative research team analysing the marsupial's 26,000 genes and sequencing over 3.4 billion base pairs, which was published this month in Nature. "The achievement is very significant and has resulted in the most complete marsupial genome sequence ever obtained, approaching the human genome for quality," Professor Timms said. The five year project involved 54 scientists from 29 different institutions across seven countries. "Unlocking the koala's genomic sequence gives scientists unprecedented insights into the unique biology of the koala, including into their
immune system, population diversity, evolution and, importantly, infection by the koala retrovirus (KoRV)," Professor Timms said. "While habitat destruction and other human causes are critical, infectious diseases such as chlamydia and the retrovirus are major challenges for the long-term survival of the koala. "Very little is known about the koala retrovirus, but this complete koala genome has been instrumental in showing that an individual koala can have the virus inside its genome DNA hundreds of times, and in many different forms. "We are now better placed to understand how the virus might lead to cancer or how it might make chlamydial infections worse. This is valuable data as we look to create vaccines and treatments for koala retrovirus in future." Project leader Dr Rebecca Johnson,
from the Australian Museum Research Institute in Sydney said the project had unearthed a wealth of data regarding the koala's unusual diet of eucalyptus leaves. "Koalas are picky eaters, eating a diet high in toxins, one that would be fatal to most mammals, yet they

ENJOY YOUR POOL WHOLE YEAR ROUND Summer may have ended, but it doesn't mean you have to say goodbye to your pool. The team from Poolwerx Cooroy and Noosa have listed several simple ways to extend summer and enjoy your pool for many months to come. For a simple and easy heating solution, invest in a pool blanket. These blankets not only help raise the water temperature in your pool (by up to 8 degrees), but also reduces evaporation and keeps debris, such as leaves and dirt, out of your pool. As the blanket works to retain as much heat as possible, you may find that you don't need to use the pool heating system as much, reducing energy costs by up to 50 percent. If you're looking to take more control of
your pool throughout the year, a heat pump or gas heater can help keep the temperature exactly how you like, no matter what the weather is like outside. For the ultimate heating solution to keep both your family and your wallet happy, you can't go past solar heating. With multi installation options and super quiet operation, solar heating is the most economical and energy efficient way to heat your pool, year-round. If you're not ready to say goodbye to summer, contact your local Poolwerx Cooroy and Poolwerx Noosa team and come instore today to see which pool heating offer is best for you. ●

SHIP THAT RISKED EVERYTHING Everyone's heard of the Titanic, but the heroic tale of the boat that risked everything to rescue survivors has been little known, until now. University of the Sunshine Coast academic and recent doctoral graduate Dr Jay Ludowyke has published a book on the transatlantic steamship Carpathia, to be launched on July 17 at the USC Art Gallery from 5.30pm, marking the 100th anniversary of when the Carpathia sank in World War I. "The Carpathia saved an estimated
712 people who were aboard the sinking Titanic," said Dr Ludowyke who wrote the book for her Doctor of Creative Arts thesis. "The captain and his crew were risking the same fate as Titanic, weaving through icebergs to reach the sinking ship," she said Over three years Dr Ludowyke researched the topic extensively and visited archives in London, Newcastle and Liverpool, as well as Titanic Belfast in Ireland. The result is a narrative non-fiction paperback that covers Carpathia's
beginnings as a passenger ship operating between New York and the Mediterranean, its involvement in the rescue of Titanic survivors, its use in World War I when it was sunk by a torpedo, and the modern expeditions to find and dive the sunken wreck. "I came to this with no maritime experience. I just found a story that I wanted to write and it made for a steep learning curve. I had a research book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, looking up nautical terminology. It was like trying to
Dr Jay Ludowyck with her book on the rescue vessel Carpathia. learn a new language," she said. The book will be in bookshops from 10 July or visit www.hachette.com.au/book/ carpathia-wto â—?

FOCUS ON … Tax time
TAX TIPS FOR INVESTMENT PROPERTIES BY HOLLIE HARRIS Holemans Accounting and Taxation say that one of the greatest benefits of owning an investment property (besides the additional income) is your entitlement to tax benefits. Here are some of their top tips to maximise your tax return this 2017/18 fnancial year: Expenses you can and cannot claim While your property is rented or available to rent, you can claim immediate deductions for rates and taxes, property management fees, insurance, body corporate fees, cleaning and gardening, and repairs and maintenance when your tenants were living in the property. You can claim deductions for capital works (building costs) and borrowing costs over several years. Costs related to the property purchase such as stamp duty, as well as expenses paid by a tenant cannot be claimed as a deduction. Apportion expenses - If your rental property is only available for rent for part of the year, only part of the property is available to rent, or the property is rented at non-commercial rates, you must apportion your expenses to determine the deductible amounts. Prepay interest - Property investors who have adequate cash can do so and claim an immediate deduction. It is also possible to prepay and claim a deduction for your upcoming property insurance premiums. Bring forward maintenance expenditure - If there are maintenance tasks that you know will need to be completed then you
may wish to complete them before 30 June in order to minimise your tax bill in the current financial year. Record keeping measures - Investors must keep good records to substantiate
their claims. The ATO requires you to keep records such as proof of earned rental income, all expenses incurred, periods of private use by you or your friends, periods the property was used as your main
residence, loan documents and efforts to rent out the property. Give Holemans a call on 5430 7600 for more advice on your investment property and all your taxation needs this year. ●
DON’T GET CAUGHT SHORT BY HOLLIE HARRIS The ATO expected to contact more than 1 million taxpayers - either directly or through their agent - this financial year. Don't fall into the pitfalls for work-related claims. There are two ways to calculate deductions for car expenses. Work-related travel of up to 5,000 kilometres can be claimed at a rate of 66 cents per kilometre provided the claimant can show how the total amount was calculated. An alternative method is to use a logbook to claim business expenses, whereby running costs can be claimed — but vehicle improvement costs can't. Travel expenses may also be claimed for work trips - including meals, accommodation, transport and incidentals -
but any private expenses must be subtracted first. Phone and internet expenses do qualify for deductions, but if the device or service is used for personal use, only the business component may be claimed. If claiming for a home office, the individual must be able to show there was additional expense involved. Other claims that may raise a red flag with the ATO include entertainment streaming services, such as Netflix or Stan. It's a myth that everybody was entitled to claim $150 in the clothing and Laundry category. Last year, about 1.4 million people claimed exactly that amount. According to the ATO, clothes with logos or protective clothing may be claimed, but conventional clothing that individuals "happen to wear to work" cannot.

MP RAISES TOPIC OF EUTHANASIA
LENSCAPE
Thankyou Jeanette Scott (NT July 5), for your question regarding the Dying with Dignity Forum at Parliament House. Unfortunately, I was interstate with the Innovation, Tourism Development and Environment Committee researching for the Safer Waterways Bill on that day hence my absence, which the hosting organisation was aware of in advance. Recent posts on my Facebook page, website and Noosa 360 provide information including where I have raised voluntary euthanasia with the Premier as a Question Without Notice during Budget week. This question and the Premier's response can be found on www.sandybolton.com. Queensland both wants and needs this discussion and review and there are many people and organisations working to bring this about. I will continue updating information via those channels, as well as through our monthly newsletter, and if any time you have any further concerns on any matter, please do not hesitate to give me a call or email. Sandy Bolton, Noosa MP
CALL FOR EUTHANASIA DEBATE Under the Heading “Euthanasia Views" July 5, Jeanette Scott highlighted the lack of media coverage given to this subject. A large group from Noosa and the Sunshine Coast attended the forum on 25 June calling for our MPs to step up and start an inquiry to change Queensland’s end-of-life laws. There were many excellent speakers including some state MPs who recognise the need to debate the issue for Voluntary Assisted Dying reform. There was some TV coverage on ABC but where was a mention in our local papers? Come on Queensland, stop being the only state not to have the debate! Lesley Jury, Noosaville
MEN NEED MORE CARE I read your article about Saving Our Men and thought how wonderful it is that people like Dave Clarke are helping men in Noosa to speak up about stress, depression and anxiety. Just one day later, I learned that my cousin in Newcastle had taken his own life, aged 65 years. Peter was a wonderful guy, always laughing and joking. He seemed very happy with his life and family - ex-air force like his decorated POW dad, married with two adult children, several grandchildren, recently retired from a steelworks job.

Bernard Jean snapped this beauty in Cooroy with the recent rains. Just magical...please send us your lifestyle, wildlife or landscape pictures to Lenscape at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au It appears not. In 2001, my own dad took his own life after a major stroke, aged 75 years old. Such a shock, and a huge loss to his family and friends. At the time, doctor friends had said that suicide was quite common among older men, although not well-reported in the media. I’m sad that today’s culture is taking too many good men. Perhaps our current view of ‘masculinity’ needs a major shake-up? Kerri W, Noosa

The matter of downgrading this key environmental resource in order to construct a 70-metre jetty for the same purpose has been before the minister for well over 12 months, apparently awaiting further clarification from the developer. A recent visit to the Elanda site showed some much-needed improvements to the existing amenities, but also some high-end ’glamping’ tents. Other than this, there was very little sign of activity. The atmosphere at the time was tranquil and reminiscent of our earlier affordable family camping trips. I wonder how long this atmosphere will last? Noel Bird, Boreen Point

Over the past 56 years Noosa has been amazingly lucky to have had people like NPA founder the late Dr Arthur Harrold, former Mayor Noel Playford and Dr Michael Gloster working to protect its environment. BUDGET QUESTIONS I wonder why there’s been no assessment of the last 12 months’ council business? Where’s the summary of the last financial year? Where’s the evaluation of the new budget? As a de-amalgamated underfunded council, Noosa has struggled to complete projects, eg capital works, asset management plan, transport strategy etc. In 2015 the Queensland Treasury Corporation said NSC should have a capital works budget of approximately $20 million but with similar parameters in 2018 they have a budget of more than $29 million (50 per cent more than recommended). SUBLIMELY IN TUNE WITH NOOSA NATURE BECOME infatuated with the beauty of a very private, contemporary residence designed with sensitivity to the climate, season and the natural landscape. This property offers the very best elements of both a tree-change and a seachange. All becomes apparent the moment the impressive front door swings open to reveal classy Merbau timber floorboards on the long gallery-style, lofty-ceilinged hallway, which stretches the length of the first level. On the northerly side is a series of pavilions with inviting spaces, cleverly designed with banks of louvres and ohso-tall wind-out windows to capture salty breezes and layers of bright light and colour, which depending on the time of day are often filtered by trees from the adjoining verdant nature reserve. Closest to the front entrance is a substantial bedroom with a balcony, also an office. Both share a bathroom, and what a highly desirable two-bedroom guest wing it could be. In the prized, central position is the massive master suite with walk-in robe and balcony - a perfect spot to 'converse' with your neighbours, the kookaburras. Across the hallway is another pavilion, a dedicated media room which, just like the rest of the house, is wired for sound Sonos-style. At the far end are two bedrooms, a bathroom, powder room and laundry, plus a short staircase to the lower level. When it comes to living and loving spaces, the tiled ground level - also with
a northerly orientation - has it all and so much more. Look up high into the void and be taken aback by a chandelier-like pendant light called Spillage from Yellow Goat Design, a cutting-edge lighting design company. Shake your head in disbelief at the outsized covered timber decks and wetedge pool, which seem to hover over the garden of bird-attracting Australian native shrubs, and meld into the natural backdrop of trees, called home by several koalas. In addition, a cool courtyard on the
southern side has a garden which extends to the rear fence. Bridging the indoor-outdoor divide superbly is the open-plan living space. The focal point is the kitchen with butler's pantry, Caesarstone benchtops and glass splashbacks. It's designed for those with a penchant for entertaining and kids will stake a claim to the window and pool-side breakfast bar. This captivating retreat on a large block sits within an enviable dress circle location.
There's also a long list of well-thoughtout features, such as a four-car garage with storage aplenty for kayaks and water toys, as well as energy-efficient solar panels, Tesla battery storage and a rainwater tank. It's private and in a prestige cul-desac just 450 metres from the bustling heart of cafe-centric Noosa Junction and a 20-minute walk to Hastings Street and Noosa's Main Beach. Who could ask for anything more when it's all here. â—?

MISSION TO MAKE BRISBANE REAL ESTATE SLEEP BIGGEST
BIG WEDDING OR HOUSE DEPOSIT?
LOCAL auctioneer Gordon Macdonald is calling on property professionals join him for a cold night on the streets to tackle youth homelessness. The Auction Group's founder and owner hoped Brisbane's Real Estate Sleep Out would eclipse the Sydney and Melbourne events, showing the generosity of south east Queensland's property people. Despite the promise of chilly temperatures, Mr Macdonald did not hesitate when the call went out to bring the annual fundraising initiative to Brisbane. The interstate event raises muchneeded funds for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets program. "As real estate agents and auctioneers, we put people in homes every day," Mr Macdonald said. "So who better than to raise awareness for those people who simply don't have a roof over their head? "For the team at The Auction Group, we are in a position where we communicate and work closely with multiple agencies along the east coast, and (we) are passionate about shining a light on this issue, so we had no hesitation in spearheading the Brisbane event." The inaugural Real Estate Sleep Out in 2016 raised more than $134,000 with about 100 attendees sleeping rough for one night in Sydney. This year, however, organisers are aiming to attract more than 500 people across three states, with the hope of
GETTING into the property market is beating out the wedding dream for more first home buyers. Dream Design Property has revealed more couples are putting off expensive weddings, and instead using the money they would have spent for a deposit on their first home. And more of these couples are forgoing the wedding and purchasing an investment property instead of a home to live in. It's a strategy that differentiates current property investors from previous generations.
BRAVING THE COLD: The Auction Group's Gordon Macdonald is calling on real estate people to sleep out for a good cause.
If a newlywed couple is considering having their first child in five years, and they have bought an investment property
raising $500,000. Mr Macdonald said the Brisbane event was an opportunity for property professionals to give back to the community as well as to provide muchneeded funds for a good cause. "The real estate industry lists and sells houses for a living, while Youth Off The Streets works to put a roof over the heads of Australia's homeless youth," he said. "Participating in the Real Estate Sleep Out is the real estate industry's opportunity to help Youth Off The Streets continue to make a difference in the lives
of disadvantaged children by not only providing housing but also education, food, clothing, and ultimately, a second chance at a better future." The Real Estate Sleep Out will be held on 26 July at Reddacliff Place, Brisbane City. Each person who joins the Sleep Out will get food and water on the night. To take part, register online at realestatesleepout.com.au then start fundraising. Or if you prefer to contribute without hitting the streets, sponsor Mr Macdonald by clicking Sponsor a Friend on the website. ●
with their wedding fund, they could, based on equity growth, be purchasing their third property when their child is born, according to Dream Design Property. Depending on their plans, they could either use residual income from their properties to help them enter their first home, or continue to grow their investment portfolio with a view to achieving a level of financial independence by the time their child reaches school-age. ●

LIVING LEGENDS BY HOLLIE HARRIS
The Black Sorrows continue to be one of Australia's most enduring touring bands and they are coming to Tewantin Noosa RSL on Sunday 26 August. At the helm, Joe Camilleri steers the band through an energetic interplay of solid grooves and well-crafted songs that mix those well-worn ingredients of blues, soul, R&B, gospel, country and even Brill Building pop. The Black Sorrows have won the ARIA for Best Band and sold more than two million albums worldwide. Any examination of The Black Sorrows comes down to one person, Joe Camilleri frontman and the brains behind the band. Recently awarded "living legend" status by Rolling Stone, Joe's career spans an astonishing noosatoday.com.au
50+ years. As a singer, songwriter, saxophonist and producer Joe Camilleri is considered one of the most genuinely talented figures in Australian music still at the top of his game. Songs such as So Young, Hit And Run, Shape I'm In, Hold On To Me, Harley and Rose, Chained To The Wheel , Never Let Me Go and the Chosen Ones have become radio staples. As leader of two of Australia's most successful bands, Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons and The Black Sorrows, Joe's music has become part of Australian music culture. Joe was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2007. Over the years other greats have admired Camilleri's songwriting. Elvis Costello and John
Denver are just two who have recorded cover versions of Joe's music. Camilleri launched The Black Sorrows, a loose band of like-minded musicians, in 1984 following the demise of his seminal band Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons the year before. From humble beginnings playing inner-city cafes around Melbourne and selling albums from the boot of a car, Camilleri transformed The Black Sorrows into one of the most sophisticated ensembles in the country. The independently released album Dear Children, represented a turning point once CBS/Sony stepped in with a world-wide deal. When radio picked up the classic track, Mystified, The Black Sorrows really took flight releasing multi-platinum sellers Hold On To Me,
Harley & Rose and The Chosen Ones. The Black Sorrows have won the ARIA for Best Band, played sell-out shows across Europe and sold more than two million albums worldwide. In keeping with Joe's penchant for continually moving forward, the newest version of The Black Sorrows is a formidable one - Claude Carranza (guitar/vocals), Mark Gray (bass/ vocals), John McCall (keyboards/ vocals) and Angus Burchall (drums). Their Tewantin show starts with support act, Shane Kells at 1.30pm and the Black Sorrows are on stage from 3pm. Tickets are $30 for Members and $35 for Non-members. Tickets are available at reception of Tewantin Noosa RSL. â—? Thursday, 12 July, 2018

Guy Pearce - The Nomad
My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies #2) by Cynthia Hand
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
Guy Pearce, the former Geelong lad who idolised Kate Bush whilst paying his soap opera dues, always did have the music in him, which resulted in a pleasantly surprising 2014 debut record, Broken Bones. Recently claiming to the ABC's Myf Warhurst that "Singing is just crying in tune", his difficult second album (named after the plane his father died on when he was a boy) is a baring of his heart, taking stock of the end of his eighteen-year marriage and rebuilding himself. With a voice that trills high in one moment, vibrates with theatrical flourishes in another and trembles in a ruptured growl the next, it's a deeply personal long player that can be a bit hard to penetrate. Few songs here truly sweep the listener away. ●
In Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, join our favorite monster family as they embark on a vacation on a luxury monster cruise ship so Drac can take a summer vacation from providing everyone else's vacation at the hotel. It's smooth sailing for Drac's Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. But the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realizes Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka, who hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. Rating: PG (for some action and rude humor). ●
You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!) Or does she? Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Bronte and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt. ●

BRINGING BACK THE SUPPER CLUB With the gift of "perfect pitch", jazz singer Renae Suttie is happiest when she's performing on stage. Renae was awarded the "Jazz Vocalist Award" at the 2007 ABC Valley Jazz Festival and has released an album of jazz originals called "Starlight". Renae also received the "Song of The Year Award 1993" in the Australasian Songwriters Association Songwriting Contest.
They say that "three's a crowd", but the trio of artisans at Trio's Restaurant at the beautiful South Pacific Resort defy the idiom. Their consistent service of excellence is well-known in the community, so there is little to add to this distinction other than to promulgate it to the less-informed. Trio's Restaurant, Noosaville will be hosting a Supper Club on 11 August at 6:00pm where
the Renae Suttie Quintet will be performing some of the award-winning songs from the Brian Ford Songbook, consisting of Latinjazz, ballads and blues. Brian, the pianist in a modern jazz quartet, Plan B Jazz, approached Renae to record the vocals on some of his digitally prepared songs; her enthusiasm to do so was borne from the potential she saw in the songs. On a whim, Brian entered some of the recordings in worldwide songwriting contests last year. That whim has now paid off because he has now achieved recognition through winning awards from reputable music luminaries such as the US Global Music Awards, the UK Songwriting Contest and the American Songwriting Awards. Renae's singing is backed by her quintet consisting of some of the finest
musicians on the Sunshine Coast: Marnix van Bruggen, piano; Andrew Suttie, tenor/ soprano sax; Arron Bool, guitar; Brendan Scully, acoustic double-bass and Max Sportelli, drums. This eclectic collection of professionals has made Brian's songs "come to life" in a CD Album recorded at the cozy Bison Bar in Nambour. Hence, the CD will be available for sale at Trio's inaugural Supper Club venue. General Admission is $25 p/person with full access to the bar and standard menu, or $75 p/person which includes a 2-course dinner choice between 4 starters and 4 main meals including seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. Bookings essential Wed, Thurs, Fri and Sat between 4pm-6pm on 5473 1333. ●

HOW OLD IS TOO YOUNG FOR SPORTS? BY HOLLIE HARRIS
Pushing kids too early into sport can backfire, with new research showing children who start at age four or five are more likely to drop out of that sport or stop doing sport altogether. Victoria-wide sport participation data funded by VicHealth and Sport and Recreation Victoria, suggests parents are better off waiting for children to turn at least six before enrolling them in sport programs to increase the chance they'll continue. "Very young children should be having fun and developing basic motor skills playing unorganised sport," said Victoria University and Federation University Associate Professor Rochelle Eime. Her study of nearly 14,000 participation records of girls aged four to 10 in one sport over four years showed the strongest predictor that a child would transition into junior club competition was the age at which they started.
Around 60% of those starting aged four or five dropped out within four years. The optimum entry age for continued participation in the sport was ages seven to nine, with only 30% drop-out rate. "Very young children are more likely to become bored before they are really developmentally ready for club competition around age eight, and then they'll either try another sport, or drop out of sport altogether," she said. Dr Eime said the reasons for children starting sport too early could be linked to the increase in modified programs for the very young, as sport clubs and peak sporting bodies attempt to boost player numbers to offset the massive drop-off of teenaged players that occurs later across all sports. Pushy parents can also be a factor since many assume the earlier a child starts a sport, the more quickly they'll develop skills and gain an edge over their peers. "This study suggests that targeting the very young is not the optimum recruitment
strategy for continued participation in a sport. Sporting organisations that want to retain kids into their competitive competitions should focus on recruiting them later," she said. VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said with childhood obesity increasing, it was important that kids have an opportunity to get active in a way that's fun and interesting for them. While Dr Eime's study looked only at female participants in a predominantly
female sport, the data could be generalised for boys and other sports. The study was recently published in BMC Public Health. The research data is part of the Sport and Recreation Spatial, the largest repository of sport participation data in Australia. It is aimed at improving government decision-making about strategies and funding for sport, and offering sporting associations meaningful information about sport participation trends. ●

TIGERS CONSOLIDATE SECOND SPOT The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have moved two and half games clear of any rival in second position after a hard fought five goal victory over a gallant Coorparoo last weekend. On a blustery Brisbane day the game looked evenly poised throughout the opening half with the navy blues seemingly able to answer Noosa's forward movement. At the main break the Tigers held a slender four point lead with the tiger faithful not overly confident about what might happen next. However a superb third quarter by the Tigers saw the favourites lengthen their lead to a perfect four goals with the last stanza to come. The last quarter was an ebb and flow affair with both teams scoring consistently however the Tigers ran out 33 point victors. Skipper Aaron Laskey was just huge all day for Noosa as his reading of the play and his ability to turn defence into attack a
highlight for all those to see. Footy manager Mitch Woods again produced a sublime performance across half back and through the midfield to continue his stellar season in the same vein as Laskey. Up forward big man Jake Stewart produced another strong showing as the business end of the year gets closer. Kent Delbridge booted six goals in a fantastic display of goal kicking as on-baller Nick Hill booted four last quarter goals to ensure the Tigers stay just half a game off top spot with five games to go. The experience of Danny O'Brien was on show at Coorparoo on Saturday as the 38 year old shone with 3 majors in a classy display up forward with special mention also to youngster Rhys Tarling who played his first senior game for 2018 and certainly did not disappoint. No game this week for the seniors due to the representative weekend in Brisbane and a big congrats to
Laskey,Templeton, Fitzpatrick, McDonald, Stack, Holt, Boardman and Kenny who were all selected in this year's representative squad to play North Queensland at Aspley this Saturday. Whilst I know at least half of those just named are carrying a few niggles all the best to any of the Tiger boys who get the chance to don the South Queensland guernsey. Great wins to the reserves and colts also last weekend with our under 18 boys playing western Districts in Brisbane this Saturday in another must win encounter. WORK ON FOR MORE SPEED AS TOUGH TRUCKS MAX OUT Toyota Hilux SuperUtes driver and Noosa Moneypenny's owner Ben Walsh was buoyed after becoming fastest qualifier of the 3 Toyota Hiluxes competing in the Townsville Watpac 400 over the weekend. However the Hiluxes lined up in 7th, 8th and 9th place so were struggling to match the other manufacturers for pace. Set up changes to Walsh's Toyota entry saw some impressive gains in the first race. Walsh made his way into fourth
position and was contesting third when a 50 cent rubber radiator plug split causing overheating and dropping him back to sixth where he finished. In race 2 Walsh showed great pace, bringing his car home in third place and giving him his first podium race finish for the 2018 series. In race 3 he lined up third on the grid for the final an donly needed a top 5 finish to secure a podium finish for the round. At the start Walsh dramatically
avoided a huge crash that destroyed Tom Alexander's car. This left Walsh in last position making his way through the back markers to finish fifth position overall. "It's a bittersweet end to the weekend," he said. "We really had a good chance at finishing on the very top step of the podium this weekend but were just really unlucky in the end. We certainly certainly did not have the fastest car on the grid this weekend yet we still managed to really punch above our
weight in the Car City Hilux and challenge for the win. We have a lot of work to do for the next round in less than two weeks at Willowbank but I am confident that we can find more speed and show even more competitiveness." Round 4 of the Australian SuperUtes Series is at the Supercars Ipswich Supersprint on 20-22 July. ●

NOOSA TODAY 41
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
IT’S THE GREAT WALL OF NOOSA A couple of weeks back I had a phone call from ABC Coast FM's news room asking me to comment, presumably in my role as president of Noosa World Surfing Reserve, on the construction of the "Great Wall of Noosa". Since I was at a hideaway up the coast at the time, and hadn't been out on the Park Road boardwalk for weeks, I had to plead ignorance of this apparent blight on humanity. The reporter wasn't terribly impressed. Wasn't the old dude supposed to be the font of all knowledge on matters beachy? She sighed, harrumphed and rang off, I guess to hurriedly find another set of tonsils that knew how to make a good 15-second sound bite for the news on the hour. Because our Surf Reserve committee had been represented in the community consultation group that gave the nod to the Park Road works, I felt bad about my ignorance and made it a mission to get informed and take a position on this important matter - well, important enough for an ABC regional to get excited about anyway. Acting on a tip from a source (let's call him Dangerous Dan) I visited the Noosa Community Notice Board on Facebook, where I discovered, much to my surprise, that old mate Dennis Massoud was leading the revolt against the Great Wall conspiracy. Now Dennis and I go back aways we were once related by marriage, his preparedness to throw himself under a truck to save Noosa from bad taste buildings is admirable, and I concede that no one builds a meaner sandcastle - but I never thought that I would hear or read him protest: "You will no longer be able to see the ocean from your car." Shock horror. Does this mean that people will have to walk out along the boardwalk to see the ocean below? I wondered if the great developer T.M. Burke had uttered these exact words, when told all those years ago that he would not be allowed to build a scenic coast road through the guts of the Noosa National Park. Maybe Dennis was ironically channeling old Tractor Tom, because the accompanying photos of a low-key and low-rise granite wall in progress didn't look to me like it was going to impede anything really. I scrolled down and saw some rather heated and nasty exchanges on the issue, but it was all brought into perspective by Hilarious Harry Bryant, the gun goofy from Sunshine: "Dennis, mate, chuck a phone book on your seat and this should solve
The Great Wall. Photo courtesy Dennis Massoud. your problem." You've gotta love a bloke who can crack wise even on the Eve of Destruction. And speaking of old doom and gloom songs, I'm reminded of Toni Fisher's stirring lament, back in 1961 when Nikita Kruschev built a wall that divided Berlin: Wall built upon sorrow/ One day you will end/ Hearts true to each other/Will not break they will not bend/ The world knows about sadness and we are not alone/ West of the wall that soon will fall and you'll come home. It's a similar situation except that Kruschev's wall was as high as a house and it ruined lives and brought the world to the brink of war, whereas ours is a few centimetres high and exists to protect pedestrians. But no doubt West of the Wall will be getting a run down at the Park Road barricades. I wrote in this space a few weeks back about the wonderful rookie season that Avoca Beach tradie and good bloke Wade Carmichael is having on the WSL world tour, but unfortunately last week he was robbed of his maiden tour victory by another encounter with the unstoppable force of King Filipe of Brazil.

to excel in giant caverns at the end of the road. But Chopes isn't always quadrupleoverhead and throwing, and in any case Toledo has lifted his big wave game. It's worth remembering that our first world pro champion, Peter Townend, was considered unbeatable under three feet and useless over it, until he rode 30 foot waves at Waimea Bay in the 1974 Smirnoff. Filipe Toledo is the fastest surfer I have ever seen and one of the most exciting. As the Greatest Of All Time exits limping, arise King Filipe! But please can Julian have a go first? ●

At least this time Wade got in a few counter-punches to keep it interesting, whereas in Brazil last month he simply looked in awe of the rampaging Toledo on his home turf. And in cranking surf at Jeffrey's right up to the final, the man they call Aussie Jesus put up some spectacular performances. But that's enough about Jesus, let's talk about God, and if he keeps going like this, there's sure to be a statue of him overlooking Rio very soon. Just 23, Filipe Toledo keeps getting better and better. His first world title is only a matter of time, and since he took the yellow jersey away from Our Jules in South Africa, it might be this year. Of course next stop on the tour is Tahiti where fearless Julian can be expected

TOKYO TRIUMPH FOR LOCAL LIFESAVER BY RON LANE For local Noosa lifesaver Lana Rogers the quite determination that saw her win the recent Open Iron Woman Championship of Australia is, despite it being the winter months, still very much alive and kicking. As a member of a ten person Australian Team (5 men and 5 women) Lana recently travelled to Momochi Beach in the city of Fukuoka Japan to contest the Sanyo International Lifesaving Cup. Happy to relate that after two days of competition the overall results saw a win for Australia with 455 pts. followed by New Zealand with 435 and in third place Japan with a total of 329. "There was a good representation with teams from U.S.A., Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa," said Lana. "For us the win gave Australia 11 years in a row which is truly a great result. The only disappointment was that the beach is in a harbor area and therefore there was no surf." On day one there was a bit of a setback for the Aussies as some boys were ill and one had a minor injury, thus putting more pressure on the girls to really perform; and this they did. Day two and all team members were at full strength and the results speak for themselves. It was a busy program with 8 events, with the same program being conducted on both days. For Lana it was indeed a very successful trip. Her events consisted of the ladies open Iron woman, board race, ski race, taplin relay, board rescue and the tube rescue race. This resulted in Lana winning the gold medal in all events on both days with
The Australian team in Japan. the exception of the ski race which saw her twice win the silver. "I was very happy with the results; winning these events back to back was a good feeling. Also in the boys Max Brooks from Newport won the open men's ironman and the ski race on both days. It was a great carnival and the team spirit was first class; and we had a good coach in Kurt Wilson from Currumbin Beach. Mr. Sanyo the major sponsor was in attendance and all the
Japanese people were very supportive." After a two day sightseeing trip around Tokyo the team arrived home. However for Lana there was little rest before she was back in full training. This program is six days a week with three sessions each day. And for the season ahead her main goals are both the Iron Woman Series and the Coolangatta Gold. We wish this charming young lady all the very best. â—?

PLENTY OF FLATHEAD IN THE RIVER, JUST WAITING TO BITE In the river we have seen a solid run of big flathead from the lower part of the system as well as up to the mouth of Lake Cooroibah. These have been caught on a wide range of baits from live baits, smaller pilchards, whitebait and of course soft plastics. In the lower part of the system the tailor are making a stronger presence each week as they make their run north. Fish in the mid 70cm mark are not unusual so it's important to upsize your leaders when the tailor are around as they can get through some gear if the leader is to light. The bigger fish are falling to a range of trolled lures and surface lures and fresh strip baits fished on small gang hooks. Surface lures including popper and surface lures have also been working well in the low light periods. Live beach worms have been accounting for quality bream and whiting in the lower estuary when rigged with lighter leaders and worm hooks. Fishing areas like Gympie Road, Munna Point, Woods Bays, the Dog Beach and of course the frying pan have all seen great results. On the beaches, whiting, dart and good sized bream are in most of the close gutters. Make sure you have those worming plyers handy as live beach worms are the favourite bait for these bread and butter species. If you time your trip up the beach just on the low tide and pull some worms then fish the tide in you should see some great results. noosatoday.com.au
With good schools of tailor really starting to show up in numbers now is the time to start using gang hooks with fresh mullet strips, bonito fillet and whole pilchard baits. Fishing along the North shore has been very popular with the Double Island end seeing some bigger fish on the morning and afternoon tides. Jew are also about and love a feed of tailor so if you get a legal chopper take the sides off him and send it out the back. The best jew bite is always around the new moon so this week will be worth a try. With the breeze up a little over the weekend only the larger craft ventured out, for those that did get out the reefs were really firing. There were good numbers of snapper being taken on micro jigs on North Reef. Some legal red throat emperor were also coming from North Reef with live baits doing the job. There are large schools of bait showing on the sounder at the moment so make sure you have a good supply of bait jigs. The reefs off Double Island are fishing extremely well for pearl perch, snapper and red emperor making the long trip from the bar well worth it. A little closer to home mixed reef species like parrot, sweetlip, cod and squire have been keeping anglers happy at Sunshine Reef with the occasional trout still hanging around. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
