Lethal crossing By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Lana Formoso with sons Hugo and Luka in front of Stud Road. Dandenong Basketball Stadium is in the background. 182801 just to get across." Ms Formoso said it was unrealistic to expect residents to make a two-kilometre detour to use the nearest crossings. Dandenong Basketball Association general manager Graeme Allen said the stadium supported the need for a crossing, together with a signalised intersection for vehicles at McFees Road. He said there were regular collisions be-

tween cars attempting to enter and exit the stadium on Stud Road. "Losing one life is one life too many." According to VicRoads, in the five years before the 5 April crash there were no pedestrianrelated crashes on Stud Road between Cheam Street and McFees Road. Its regional movement and safety manager Sasha Yarwood said: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out

to the family and friends of those involved in this crash. "Following every death on our roads, VicRoads reviews the site and works extensively with Victoria Police on their investigation." In assessing funding requests, VicRoads considers factors such as crash history, traffic volume, cost, type of road users and the affect on the wider road network.

Crossing at a notorious Stud Road pedestrian black-spot has been compared to a perilous game of 'Frogger'. Just like the video game, pedestrians crossing between Cheam Street and the Dandenong Basketball Stadium must navigate across six lanes of fast-moving traffic. The 80 km/h road is what's between an established residential area and a vast network of walking and cycling paths, wetlands, a bus stop and the basketball stadium. It is more than a kilometre from signalised pedestrian crossings north at Bradys Road and south at Heatherton Road. On 9 July, Greater Dandenong Council confirmed it was advocating to VicRoads to install a signalised pedestrian crossing. Acting engineering services director Craig Cinquegrana said the crossing would improve pedestrian safety and encourage public transport use for basketball stadium patrons. Since 5 April, the spot has become imbued with tragedy. A woman in her 50s was fatally struck by a vehicle as she crossed the road that afternoon. Dandenong North resident Lana Formoso wrote to Greater Dandenong Council's public question time about the issue. She has vivid memories of her first attempt to cross Stud Road with her two young children to go for a bike ride in Dandenong North's wetlands. Shocked by the heavy traffic, she carried her children one-by-one across the service lane and road, took them to a safe-point at the basketball stadium and then hauled their bikes across. "It was like a game of Frogger. "I now use the car to drive just 200 metres -

Living with polio’s effects By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Mobile pet sex solution By Cam Lucadou-Wells A charitable animal shelter is seeking funds for a low-cost mobile pet-desexing service in Greater Dandenong. Under state planning laws, Australian Animal Protection Society does not have a permit to operate a commercial veterinary surgery at its temporary base in industrial Dandenong South. Without a commercial vet, the shelter is deprived of vital income. It is also unable to offer low-cost desexing to help tackle an epidemic of stray and unwanted cats. Its $55 service was just a third of the price for other commercial vets.

Last year, the shelter - Greater Dandenong's only one - housed 2500 cats and 600 dogs. "In any day, we could get up to 30 kittens handed in," AAPS president Megan Seccall said. Ahead of 'kitten season', the society has set up a Go Fund Me crowdfunding site in its hope to raise $100,000 for a mobile desexing service. Within two years, the society expects to set up a permanent shelter and vet service in Bangholme. It had recently moved from its Keysborough site after it was acquired by the State Government to create a badly-needed state school. Lyn Bates is living proof that polio is far from eradicated. The Noble Park retiree contracted polio as a child - on the tail-end of the 1940s and 1950s epidemic. In recent years, the incurable disease has become more imposing. Ms Bates, once used calipers and crutches, but now depends on a motorised wheelchair. Her crutch- wielding arms are worn out from "being my legs" for so many years. She has had to give up driving her modified car, and order taxis to get around. "It's a knock to your ego," Ms Bates says. "You suffer a lot of pain, a lot of fatigue that's one of the worst parts." This month, Polio Australia is holding an information session on the late effects of polio, how to manage it and get in touch with support services. For instance, there are specialist doctors, orthotists and occupational therapists to help make life easier. "We encourage people to come to these seminars to learn about what's available," says Ms Bates - who is co-convenor for a regional polio support group. "A lot of people don't know they can get these things, partly funded by the Government." Like others over 65, Ms Bates however is not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It's a mystery how Ms Bates contracted the illness as a six-year-old. She was the only person in the small country town of Newry who went down with the disease. She was kept in isolation in hospital for about two months. She remembers seeing her family come to visit at a distance, tapping outside her ward window. But like many polio sufferers, she stubbornly wanted to prove she could do things.

Lyn Bates says support is available for the late effects of polio. 182843 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS She moved into the city, forged a long working life in offices and lived independently in her own flat. Ms Bates says anti-vaxxers should note the disease's crippling consequences and its prevalence in other parts of the world. "If we don't continue to get our children immunised, we will get polio back again. "Many go travelling into countries like India and Pakistan where polio is still quite rampant." The information session is for people who had Polio, along with their families and carers, on July 27 at the Jan Wilson Centre, Halton Rd, Noble Park from 1.30-3pm. Register online at http://bit.ly/InfoSessionNP, or contact Stephanie Cantrill at Polio Australia on 0466 719 613 or steph@polioaustralia.org.au.

$500m grant to free up the Monash

Boy out on state’s strictest bail laws By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 15-year-old boy charged with possessing cannabis has had to pass the same strict bail law test applied to accused murderers. In what a children's court judge termed as an "anomaly", the boy had to prove "exceptional circumstances" to be released on bail on 9 July. Cannabis possession is punishable by a fine of up to $800 but was not a jailable offence. It attracted the harshest of the State Government's new bail laws because it is an indictable offence, and the boy had been on bail for an indictable offence at the time. Police seized the boy's hidden stash from his residential care bedroom early on 9 July,

the court heard. After the raid, the boy allegedly kicked two of the facility's workers. No injuries were reported, the court was told. He had been on bail for theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct endangering life due to allegedly pulling the handbrake whilst driving the stolen car. A police informant listed 11 outstanding charges that the boy faced at the children's court. "Where's it going to stop?" A Youth Justice worker said the boy had been "extremely distressed" while remanded in police cells that day. "He's really worried. He's got to the point of giving up.

"(He says) what's the point of doing the good things when I keep ending up back in (cells)." The judge stated there were "exceptional circumstances" - taking into account his intellectual disability, autism, age and his personal circumstances that led him to living in residential care. The boy had been complying with Youth Justice supervision orders and attending school, the judge said. "There's a tipping point in terms of how you deal with people." The boy was bailed with a night curfew to appear at a childrens' court at a later date.

World-class fighter kicks through red-tape By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 17-year-old fighter has punched through a bureaucratic brick wall that threatened to upend his international martial arts career. Rahullah Sarwari, of Dandenong, was denied representing Australia in Kung Fu world titles last year due to a citizenship row. With great agility, Mr Sarwari has quickly reinvented himself as a kickboxer. He was recently selected for Australia to take part in the 17-18 year old division of WAKO kickboxing world titles in Italy in September. "Rather than wait for my citizenship, I thought there should be another way in which

I could go for a world game. "(In kickboxing) they don't ask you about your citizenship stuff. "So I competed in state championships and national championships, and I was selected for the Australian team again." Mr Sarwari had been unable to compete in Kung Fu titles while his application for Australian citizenship was pending. Due to a typo, his father's credit card payment was declined during the application. By the time, the family was notified, Mr Sarwari turned 16 and so was bumped up into a different category for prospective citizenship. He and his supporters pleaded for the Fed-

eral Government to fast-track his application ahead of the titles. They pointed to his great character, volunteering as a Bonbeach surf lifesaver as well as his national gold medals in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton stated in a letter that he and his Department had no power to "waive the requirements". Without government funding, Mr Sarwari is now scrambling for sponsors to help him pay for the $5000 trip to the world titles, including a high-altitude training camp. Monash Freeway’s notorious gridlock is set to be eased with 36 kilometres of new lanes to be added - made possible by a $500 million grant from the Turnbull Government. Major construction on the Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 project is scheduled to start in mid-2019 and is expected to be completed in early 2022. Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said he has long campaigned to make the upgrade a reality. He said the project included the upgrade of the Beaconsfield Interchange and the extension of O’Shea Road in Berwick. “The freeway will be widened between Warrigal Road and Eastlink and between Clyde Road and Cardinia Road, cutting an estimated nine minutes off a peak-hour trip between Pakenham and the city,” Mr Wood said. “This is going to deliver smoother and safer commutes for my community, ensuring people get from work to home sooner so they can spend less time in traffic and more time with the family.” Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said the added lanes “will slash congestion and improve travel times for drivers across Melbourne’s south east while also ensuring safer journeys.” “Motorists make more than 470,000 trips on this corridor each day and that’s why the Turnbull Government is investing $500 million in this vital project - to help ensure those trips become quicker and easier for Melburnians,” Mr Fletcher said. “There are also important economic benefits - this upgrade will improve access to the growing Monash and Dandenong National Employment and Innovation Clusters, major employment centres incorporating Monash University, Monash Medical Centre and Dandenong Hospital. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the State Government was pleased to see the Commonwealth getting behind the urgently needed project. “Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade will give drivers in the south east faster, safer and more reliable journeys - we’re glad to see the Commonwealth getting behind this urgently needed project,” he said. “It is a fantastic outcome for Victoria that we have been able to take Commonwealth money that would have been wasted on the Liberals dud-East West Link and redirect it to important projects like the Monash Freeway Upgrade.” The national advisory body on major infrastructure projects, Infrastructure Australia added Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade to the Infrastructure Priority List.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

Home front a wheel threat By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Dawn Vernon with resident Nizamr at a Neighbourhood Watch event. 115174 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Victoria's chief executive Bambi Gordon, who is marking the statewide organisation's 35th birthday. In that time, the nature of neighbourhoods has changed, Ms Vernon said. A close neighbourhood that looks out for one another feels a safer place, she said. "A lot of people say they don't know their neighbours. "I have great neighbours because I take that step out and welcome them to the neighbourhood." Rather than letterbox drops, the group sends out free email letters by subscription. It also keeps a Facebook page to reach out across the entire Greater Dandenong region. The general meeting is at Paddy O'Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley Street, Noble Park on Wednesday 18 July, 7.30pm.

12388226-CG22-18

Car security begins at home, says Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch president Dawn Vernon. The crime-prevention group pitched into Operation Bounce Back - a joint campaign to help residents protect their cars from thieves. About 75 per cent of stolen cars are taken while parked close to home, including driveways and garages, Ms Vernon said. Many are due to simple oversights that 'open the door' for car-thieves, such as leaving keys in the ignition, she said. Residents are also advised to provide a clear line of sight from their home to the street, and to lock all doors and windows including the internal entry to the garage. Security lighting and a home alarm system should also be considered. Operation Bounce Back is holding information stalls at Springvale railway station on Monday 16 July, 1pm-3pm, and Noble Park station on Wednesday 25 July, 8.30am-10.30am. Greater Dandenong is also screening an educational animation at Harmony Square. It is a joint initiative of Greater Dandenong Council, Victoria Police and the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council. In July, Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch is also giving thanks to its cohort of loyal volunteers during its lifetime. The venerable crime-prevention group is holding a certificate presentation for past and present helpers at its general meeting. Guest speaker is Neighbourhood Watch

Rob Boyle with his prescient pork-pie ahead of the World Cup quarter-finals. 182632 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Pie in the sky? Dandenong butcher Rob Boyle's 'oracle' pork pie and the England World Cup side seemed to be having a charmed run. Mr Boyle, who runs Rob's British Butchery, had baked up a pie that correctly declared England's quarter-final win over Sweden on 8 July. But his pies' clairvoyant powers seemed to dry up for the semi-final. It incorrectly declared England a 4-2 winner over Croatia, no doubt leaving a bitter taste of defeat.

Seagull haven Greater Dandenong Council was recently provided an update on the circling flocks of seagulls in Dandenong. It seems several private building owners will follow the lead of the council and install purple glimmering lights to deter the overwhelming birdlife. A council officer said at a 9 July meeting that there was a need for suitable natural habitat for the seagulls to nest in the South-East. May we

humbly suggest the Eastern Treatment Plant emulating the well-known bird sanctuary at its Werribee counterpart.

Pack of controversy The Liberal Party caused a bit of a furore, handing out 'gang-busting' pamphlets at Noble Park railway station on 12 July. The pamphlets were headed 'Stop Gangs Hunting in Packs' - with an image of five hooded young males huddled together in a park. Interesting tactics in an area richly populated by African communities ... It sparked outrage from GetUp, Flemington-Kensington Legal Centre and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula who declared on Twitter that it was "disgraceful behaviour from my opponent using a 6 year old photo from the Evening Standard in London to try to frighten my constituents in Noble Park and #Keysborough". Others accused the party of 'dog whistling'. Liberal candidate Darrel Taylor has been contacted for a response.

Road-rage dad on his meds

Sport gets a right serve By Cam Lucadou-Wells

vest in sport to offer "somewhere for our youth to go rather than create a havoc on the street". "Some of our facilities are in need of an upgrade. We could never afford to do all of it at once ... by spreading it out at $4 million a year is quite adequate." Through sport, young people learnt to be a "team player", learnt respect and learnt to appreciate community facilities. Cr Jim Memeti said "tens of thousands" of people were using a multitude of Greater Dandenong sports fields, including 38 cricket grounds, 29 soccer pitches and 22 netball courts. The sports clubs were vital to the upbringing of children and bringing large groups together, he said. The council was spending more on swimming than the other sports "put together" including $27 million on Noble Park Aquatic Centre and the mooted - but as yet uncommitted - $60 million Dandenong Oasis replacement, he said. Corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the council had spent about the same $4 million annual amount on pavilion upgrades for the past five years. The council would also seek state and federal funds for the projects, he said. Cr Kirwan later said the "team sport argument is a bit last century". "The research shows that is not what kids want. "Go down to Hemmings Park in Dandenong any day and you will see plenty of kids skateboarding, BMX biking, playing casual soccer." 12393487-RA30-18

A $75 million plan to upgrade Greater Dandenong's sports pavilions and lights has been dismissed by a Greater Dandenong councillor as funding "declining" team sports. Cr Matthew Kirwan, in solely opposing the 25-year sports facilities plan, said the most popular recreational activities were not team sports. He pointed to the council's 2015 survey that showed the top five pursuits were walking, swimming, running, cycling and fitness activities. "Team sports like basketball, soccer and tennis took up spots six, seven and nine and all showed declining participation," Cr Kirwan said. "Sports like cricket and AFL don't even make the top ten." The "very expensive" plan would spend about $40 million on 20 pavilion upgrades over 10 years, and $35 million on 49 lighting projects over 25 years. It aims to bring all of the council's facility's up to a minimum standard, including femalefriendly and disability-compliant facilities. Cr Kirwan said the council's earlier recreation strategy prioritised spending on walking, cycling, aquatic centres and leisure centres. "If you look at our last few budgets we are not proposing $5.4 million a year on walking and cycling. "No instead we are looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, not millions per year." Cr Angela Long said the council needed to in-

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has blamed a violent attack on his adopted daughter and her partner in their car in Hallam on disagreeable medication, a court has heard. The 43-year-old man had texted complaints to the partner - who was a mechanic - about not repairing his vehicle. He then drove up the partner's driveway in Hallam. He got out of the car yelling, grabbed and tore the partner's T-shirt and punched him in the face, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 9 July. The partner fended some blows. With his hearing-aid knocked out and bleeding from his ear and face, he fled on foot. Later, the female victim has pulled up beside the accused's car at Princes Highway and Fitzgerald Road, Hallam. She made a gesture to her adopted father as if to ask what is going on. The accused got out of the car, yelling insults at her. He punched the windscreen so hard that it caused a large crack, and head-butted the daughter's face and pushed her in the face with an open hand while she was inside the car. He also punched the partner through an open passenger window. Defence lawyer Bernard Moore said the man was on "substantial medication that didn't agree with him" at the time. The psychiatric drug that he'd taken for depression was "messing with his mind", Mr Moore said.

"He's ended up in hospital four days later." The man was since receiving counselling, Mr Moore said. According to a clinician's report, the man was misusing prescription drugs, the court heard. The female victim was the daughter of the accused's dead sister. The man had brought her up as his daughter for most of her life, Mr Moore said. The head-butt occurred while the accused putting his head through the open window. But it wasn't in the "normal sense" of a headbutt, the lawyer told the court. The dispute was "all about some monies he was owed". The partner was supposed to repair his car and he didn't, Mr Moore said. "Things between them are now very good." Police submitted for the man to be put on a corrections order due to his prior history and the nature of the assaults. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she would fine the man given the 16-year gap in offending - though a CCO was "in range". The father-daughter relationship represented a "breach in trust" - and was an aggravating factor in sentencing, she noted. Ms Spencer took into account the man's hospital admission soon afterwards, as well as his ongoing mental-health treatment. "Things are not quite right with you mentally at this stage which may explain why you reacted in such an extreme way." He was convicted and fined $1500.

Man faces murder charge A Springvale man has been charged with murder over the death of a man in Montmorency last month. The 53-year-old accused was charged by Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad detectives on

the afternoon of 11 July. The victim’s body was discovered on June 29. The man was expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 11 July.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 18 July 1918 British aeroplanes in action on the Western Front Lance-Corporal Alan Ticher, who has been serving with the Army Medical Corps for more than two years in France, in a letter to his parents at Dandenong says: "We have seen a lot of good aeroplane fights round here lately, and the other night I saw the most exciting one I've ever seen. "Fritz was over flying too low for the 'archies' to hurt him. "He had a good look at our village, and turned for home. "We thought we would be in for a lively time that night, as it looked a cert on his going back to his own lines. "All of a sudden the machine guns stopped firing at him and, looking up we saw five of our

machines, travelling at a terrific pace, coming straight at him. "The first one dived at him, with machine guns firing, and it looked as though they might collide in mid-air, but Fritz dived. "Then one after another, the others dived at him, each one forcing him lower until he was eventually compelled to land. "His machine was not at all damaged and neither of the two Fritz were hurt. "It was lovely to see our planes manoeuvring - first diving, circling round him, climbing, then diving again - for all the world like great hawks." At the time of writing Lance-Corporal Ticher was suffering from the effects of gas, transmitted to him from clothes worn by soldiers at the dressing station at which he was engaged.

This week's fashion news from Partons To many women it represents the greatest (almost) invention since the wheel. To Holeproof Industries Ltd it means a profit increase of $30,453. It has been named (naturally by Holeproof) its outstanding development in 1967-68. "It" is the nylon woven wonder of panty hose. The garment, if it can be so described, marks the unsightly stocking tops and suspenders which persisted in showing beneath even the most demure of miniskirts. Never before has so much emphasis been placed on stockings, colours, textures and styles whether they be stay-ups, panty hose or tights. Black is definitely the "in" colour as we have been brain-washed by fashion writers and advertisements.

20 July 1998 Crocodile "Dandee" bitten A Dandenong man was attacked by a crocodile in his back yard on Saturday. Transitioning to our future Forty-seven years ago, I commenced working for CSIRO subsequently becoming Chief of the Division at Aspendale. Colleagues and I studied the world’s atmosphere and how its gases were influencing and changing the climate. We used innovative ways to understand such changes, also looking at the impacts and anticipating future change. In the 1970-80s, some scientists remained somewhat sceptical about whether change was happening and human activities were the cause. Today the science community is overwhelmingly convinced that the climate is changing and that a major factor is society’s emissions of gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This gas comes mainly from the combustion of fuels for energy, coal, gas and oil (the

GRAEME PEARMAN BANGHOLME CLIMATE AND ENERGY SCIENTIST

so-called fossil fuels). Thus, over the past decade or so, attention has turned to how our sourcing and use of these fuels needs to be curtailed and replaced by solar, wind and hydro sources (the so-called renewables). The United Nations has established a Framework Convention on Climate Change and in 2015, as part of that, almost 100 nations set a goal to limit global warming to below 2 degrees. To achieve that, the emissions of these cli-

matically important gases must reduce to zero through the coming decades. A huge challenge, yet a necessary one. Two significant barriers to change are conservatism and vested interests. We all, to some extent, hold on to the past; the things that have served us well. Some find it challenging to imagine a nation, city, home, or business in which coal, gas and oil no longer play a critical role. Yet we have viable options and the challenge is to recognise that in the long run this is essential. In the shorter term, those who embrace change will experience advantages over those who dwell in the past. Some citizens are employed by traditional energy companies and others have investments in them. For them it is harder to face the reality that their sector of economy is in retreat, like the

coal industry, being abandoned by investors and many governments around the world. The City of Greater Dandenong has established a Sustainability Reference Group. Part of its objectives is, working with others, to encourage and promote the use of renewable energy technologies. We aim to assist the City, its citizens and businesses, to embrace what is currently a global re-alignment of its sourcing and use of energy, but also as a way of managing the required business transition and embrace the opportunities. We hope to encourage businesses within our City to accept the challenge of a rapid transformation of our energy use by building knowledge about what options are available and implementing change that makes them more resilient and indeed more profitable than others who are slow to respond. 12351228-EPJ19-17

Hard lesson By Cam Lucadou-Wells A teacher pleading guilty to his third recent drink-driving offence has the spectre of jail looming over his head. Vincent Lam had been at a good friend's wedding before being detected with a bloodalcohol reading of 0.112 at Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills just after 3.30am on 25 March, a court heard. He was also unlicensed to drive at the time having been disqualified from driving for previous drink-driving. Police had observed Lam had difficulty staying in his lane while driving that night, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 9 July. Lam asked the court to take into account his guilty plea, that his alcohol reading was not in the "high range" and that he'd signed up for a drink-driving awareness course. He told the court that he wanted to continue to work as a "civil servant". "I keep my personal and my professional life separate," he said. "I was at a very good friend's wedding ... It was an error of judgement."

Magistrate Pauline Spencer was concerned that the "obviously smart and hard-working" teacher had been previously detected at 0.14 in 2014 and 0.06 in 2015. "Why are you making such important errors of judgement multiple times? "You can imagine someone doing it once, even imagine them doing it twice but three times? "What's going on in your head?" Ms Spencer told Lam that he had to work out his relationship with alcohol and driving. "We need to do something before you harm yourself or someone else." Lam's sentence was deferred on condition that he attended the drink-driving course and that he underwent counselling. "If you do that over the next six months, I won't jail you." Ms Spencer said she was reluctant to impose a corrections order, given Lam had teaching duties. Instead, she foreshadowed a punishing fine. His licence was disqualified for 22 months from 9 July. Lam faces final sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 October.

Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a vacant house on Mather Road, Keysborough. Neighbours woke to the sound of breaking glass at the blaze about 2am on 4 July, Detective Acting Sergeant Kim Alp of Greater Dandenong CIU said. The site, which was surrounded by a wire security fence, was due for demolition that

day, she said. It was suspected to contain asbestos. A Noble Park CFA crew attended and extinguished the fire. Detectives were investigating if squatters at the house may have been involved, Det Sgt Alp said. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Five ways to avoid scams As tax time 2018 begins, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to be on high alert for tax-related scams. To protect family and friends, the ATO has released five simple ways to avoid identity crimes. Know what to protect. Personal information that could be used by scammers to impersonate someone can include their full name, date of birth, current address, bank account numbers, credit card details, tax file number, drivers licence or passport details, and any passwords. Remind them to keep their personal information safe and secure. If personal information is stolen it can be very difficult to get back. It's best to store things like a tax file number or birth certificate somewhere safe and secure - don't carry it around in a wallet or handbag or saved on a phone. Keep passwords in a safe place and keep virus protection current. Warn them if they share too much on social media. Scammers can use information published on social networking sites to steal identities. If someone is sharing too much personal information online, remind them that they could be putting themselves at risk of targeted attacks. It's also a good idea to make sure profiles are set to private, and to be cautious about which friend requests to accept. Be suspicious of requests for personal information. If family and friends have received a request for their personal information; tell them to treat the request with caution. Scammers can be believable and will sometimes quote personal information to sound authentic, so if someone is asking for personal information, consider the possibility that it may be a scam. To check if a call, email, SMS is from the ATO call them on 1800 008 540 to confirm. Know legitimate ways to make payments. Scammers may use threatening tactics to trick their victims into paying false debts in pre-paid gift cards or by sending money to non-ATO bank accounts. To check that a payment method is legitimate, visit ato.gov.au/ howtopay dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

HOME from heart of art By Cam Lucadou-Wells Iranian-born artist Mahla Karimian's first chance to express herself on Australian gallery walls was a national art event in Dandenong. Prior to arriving in Australia, Ms Karimian found it difficult to express herself as an artist in her former homeland. She had been jailed for practising art as a woman - arrested for simply taking a photo on the street. "Even though I had a few successful exhibitions (in Iran) it was very challenging to be an artist," the multi-skilled practitioner said. "I was born in an Islamic country where, as a woman, I was forbidden from taking part in anything relating to art." Ms Karimian even spent time in a detention centre soon after her arrival in Australia in 2013. The turning point was a 2016 HOME event in Dandenong. It was her first art exhibition in Australia and she won a prize. HOME is an annual exhibition run by Greater Dandenong Council, celebrating artists from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds. "HOME was a huge step for me to find a connection and express myself and share my stories in a language of art with a broader community in Melbourne," Ms Karimian said. With entries open for the 2018 exhibition, the event created the opportunity for young people with refugee backgrounds to express themselves in a "safe and creative" environment, she said. It allowed artists to share their stories with the wider community - and to bring them together.

Mahla Karimian has featured regularly in exhibitions since her first HOME outing. Since 2016, Ms Karimian has exhibited in galleries across Melbourne as well as the HOME event twice. She works predominantly by etching on scratchboard - as well as mastering printmaking, sculpture, stencil, woodblock, digital media and photography. Entries for HOME 2018 are open until Sunday 29 July. The exhibition is staged in October. Details: www.greaterdandenong.com/ document/31066/home-call-for-artist-proposals

40 years of loyal service On Tuesday 26 June, a morning tea was held at Patterson Cheney Trucks to celebrate Neville Madden's 40 years employment with Patterson Cheney. Neville started his career as a parts salesperson, initially selling Holden, then Bedford, followed by Isuzu parts where he has remained ever since. For a short period, Neville was also a company representative, operating out of the old North Melbourne branch. Dealer Principal Terry Jewson has worked alongside Neville for 36 years and praised his skills and expertise. "To say that he knows all about Isuzu parts

is something of an understatement. In the words of his co-workers Neville, 'knows and remembers parts that we didn't even know existed!'" Terry said. "Neville is also something of a wizard when it comes to remembering numbers and it would be true to say there wouldn't be a more knowledgeable parts interpreter in the country. "Patterson Cheney has a culture which recognises that staff are our greatest asset and we aim to assist and support them in their personal and career development. Neville Madden is a perfect embodiment of that culture and we congratulate and thank Neville for his 40 years loyal service to the group."

different stages of our lives, and put simply, grief is our response to the impact of a loss in our life," Mr Kelly said. "We grieve because we have loved. We grieve because something significant in our life has been taken from us. We grieve because someone that we were attached to is gone. We grieve because unwelcome changes have disrupted our life. We grieve because our hopes, plans and dreams have not worked out. "Helping grieving people is not about finding ways to take their grief away. Protection of parts Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic is encouraging men to visit their GPs and urologists when facing issues with the "nearest and dearest parts of their bodies." "As a urologist, I frequently deal with blokes worried about what may be normal or may be a significant problem," Mr McCahy said. "The biggest worry for most men in this area is testicular cancer. Though rare, it is the commonest cancer in young men with most cancers presenting between 15-40 years. "Tumours appear as hard lumps which is why self-examination is a recommended. The good news is that early diagnosis results in almost complete cure, and even late presenting cancers can have very good results. "Lance Armstrong, before certain pharmacologically enhanced bike rides, was the poster boy for testicular cancer survival." Mr McCahy explained that other lumps that can appear in the scrotum include epididymal cysts, hydrocoeles and varicoceles. "Most chaps will get very small cysts in the epididymis (the very tightly coiled tube behind

When these cysts become bigger than the testicle itself it is worth considering seeing a urologist. "Hydrocoeles are sacs of fluid surrounding the testicle and small collections are common. When big (and they can be as large as a football), surgery is recommended. Varicoceles are varicose veins that surround the (mostly left) testicle and are very common. There are

various ways of repairing them if they become unsightly or painful. "If there are any concerns with the scrotum it is important to see your GP and urologists are happy to provide advice and chat about treatment options. Don't be scared." Philip McCahy is also a consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. For more information, visit seurology.simpl.com.

The skin cancer experts at Berwick and Officer Sun Patrol are warning that skin cancer can occur even in the depths of winter. Berwick Sun Patrol team member Dr Michael Inskip explained that no matter the time of year, it's always important for people to book in for a skin cancer check. "There is no doubt that the higher your lifetime exposure to sun (recreational or occupational), the higher your lifetime risk of skin cancers," Mr Inskip said. "This risk is further increased if you have a paler skin type or a family history of skin cancers." Mr Inskip said there was also "a bit of a tendency to forget about skin cancers when it is not sunny." "Skin cancers will appear all year around," he said. "So please don't wait till spring to have a check with a highly qualified doctor at either of our Sun Patrol clinics in Berwick or Officer." Climbing to new heights By Hayley Wildes Noble Park resident Matthew Austin is climbing to new heights - literally. The 15-year-old is set to represent Australia at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Youth World Championships in Russia next month. The Youth World Championships, which kick-off on 9 August, will see the world's best junior rock climbers compete for glory. Matthew will be competing in the speed discipline in the Youth B Males under-14 and 15 boys age-group. Matthew's love for rock climbing began in 2013. Since then, he has truly found his calling. "In 2013 I went climbing with my family at Bayside Rock in Carrum Downs and I really enjoyed it so I joined a class at Bayside," Matthew said of where it all began. "I go to Bayside two times a week and then one time a week at Gravity Worx, which is another gym for speed." What is it that drives Matthew to keep scaling the wall? "The challenge and it's really enjoyable," he said. "The rock climbing community around it as well; I've made a lot friends since I've been involved." When Matthew heads off to Moscow next month, it won't be his first experience of competing on the international stage. "Last year in New Caledonia I competed at the 2017 Oceania Continental Championships," he said. "I competed in all three disciplines of climbing; lead, boulder and speed. I won the speed discipline in the Youth B Male Speed, which is under-14 and 15 boys." "That was a really, really good experience." While Matthew continues to compete and practice in all three disciplines, he admits speed is his best discipline. In international competitions, the speed

Matthew Austin, pictured representing Australia in 2017, will be back in the green and gold next month. Picture: Courtesy of Sport Climbing Australia discipline is a brutal knockout competition and if you make one mistake, it can all be over in a flash. The competition consists of climbing a 15-metre high wall - an international set course - with two qualifying runs. From there, the 16 quickest climbers progress through to the head-to-head knockout stage until the

champion is crowned. The fact that Matthew is not just competing, but winning, on the international stage is made even more impressive when you take into account that he only took up speed climbing last year. It's a rapid rise for Matthew and he credits those who have helped him along the way.

"My coach at Bayside, who is also a national coach, Will Hammersla and our national speed coach Bryan Pillai, they have both been very, very helpful in getting my times down," he said. When Matthew Austin takes on the world next month, the Noble Park local will be looking to add to his already impressive resume and bring gold back to Australia.

Out Of Range for Tornado By Jason Adams The versatile Out Of Range claimed the Group 2 McKenna Memorial final on Thursday night at Sandown Park. Headline act and race favourite Tornado Tears missed the start, while Out Of Range began faultlessly to be the clear leader. He built a three-length break turning to the back straight before challenged by Neo Cleo. It was race on with the pair duelling sideby-side turning for home. Out Of Range's strength could not be matched as he held on to win by a length from Neo Cleo and the fast finishing Rockstar Patriot in 34.23. Handler and co-trainer Jason Thompson was delighted post-race and pleased to see Out Of Range begin so well. "When he gets the start right he can show a lot of speed," Thompson said. "If you told me before the race that he'd lead like that, I would've said you're dreaming. "He's got a flat spot mid-race and down the back they can really make ground on him, but if they don't get past him, he kicks away. I knew dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

his last 100 metres was going to be strong." The win was Out Of Range's third at group level after he took out the Group 1 Silver Chief and Group 1 National Derby earlier this year. Thursday night's $40,000 first prize took his prize money tally to $292,575. The Jason and Seona Thompson team tested him over the staying trip before dropping him back to the middle distance for the McKenna Memorial series. "This race came at the perfect time for him as he was coming in with good form over '700'. He had a good win last week in his heat and came in to the final full of confidence." Part-owner Michael Puleio was also on-track to celebrate and was beyond proud of his boy. "It's unbelievable, it really is. I didn't think he'd go straight to the front, but when he did I thought they won't catch him now," he said. He and son Darren bred the highly successful litter produced by their own Nicki Fields and sired by the great Fernando Bale. "To have the success we've had so far - it's a dream come true."

A Parkmore Springvale Districts footballer has been banned for life after punching an umpire during a match on Saturday, 7 July. The under 19s player immediately pleaded guilty at the Southern Football League tribunal on Tuesday, 10 July, and will now be unable to play for any league - including AFL - after the tribunal’s decision was handed down. The incident occurred during their clash with East Brighton after a young umpire awarded a free kick and a 50-metre penalty, where the opposition player punched the umpire, cutting his lip. Both teams abandoned the match immediately, but the umpire didn’t suffer any serious injuries as a result. Southern Football League CEO Mike Palmer said it was a difficult decision for the tribunal to make, but one that was necessary. “It’s a difficult situation and decision - it means someone who enjoys playing footy won’t play again,” he said. “There’s no winners in this - it’s all pretty sad.” Palmer praised the umpire for his handling of the situation and even bravely umpiring the next day, and pointed to safety as being the main reason to why the game was immediately called off. “We feel really sorry for the umpire, he expects to be umpiring safely, and we have to respect that,” he said. “We had little choice to make that decision (to call the game off). “But the umpire showed a real strength of character through what was a traumatic experience.” But Palmer also acknowledged that the player showed extreme “remorse” at the tribunal hearing after pleading guilty, and will be supported by the league and his club in the future.

“He wrote a very sincere apology letter to the umpire, and it was very genuine, and the player is distraught,” he said. “He was very quiet (at the hearing), and remorseful about the situation. “But we’ll help support him through the club, we won’t just ignore him - if he wants to be involved in any way off-field with the club or league, we certainly won’t be opposed to that. “We don’t just want to throw a guy to the wolves.” Springvale Districts president Sean Francis released a statement after the tribunal on behalf of the club, strongly opposing the actions of his now banned player. “Last night the tribunal passed down its ruling on the incident from our under 19s match on the weekend,” Francis said. “The reported player pled guilty and accepted responsibility for his actions. The sentence handed down by the tribunal was a life ban. “We accept the ruling of the tribunal and support the tough stance taken by the league on this issue. This kind of incident is not acceptable and has no place in our game. “The club will support the player in his transition out of football in what is a difficult time for all involved.” Palmer said he was “proud” of the club’s strong stance in the statement, and praised them for how they have handled a difficult situation. “They were genuinely mortified - no one could quite believe it, and they reacted strongly towards it,” he said. “They were part of the decision to call the game off, because everyone was so shocked by it all. “I’m pretty proud of what the club has done since. “They’ve reached out to the umpire, and they’ve respected and protected the player, but acknowledged what he’s done.” Monday, 16 July, 2018

Rowville is building nicely By Hayley Wildes Rowville sits fourth on the ladder in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League after taking care of business on the road against Balwyn on the weekend. The Hawks were trailing by five points at half-time, but an eight-goal to one second half saw Rowville claim a 14.9 (93) to 8.7 (55) win. Jackson McDonald and James Gwilt were superb for the Hawks. Noble Park led at the first break against Vermont, but was overrun after quarter time, falling 17.13 (115) to 11.9 (75). Kyle Martin continues to stand tall for the Bulls and was best afield for his side. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Keysborough was far too strong for East Brighton, winning 23.7 (145) to 12.9 (81). Chris Bryan was the star with 10 goals, while Corey Hargreaves booted six majors. Ryan Hendy and Ricky Johnson combined for 10 goals as the Doveton Eagles dismantled Hampton in a high-scoring affair, 24.14 (158) to 14.6 (90). Reece Hancock (three goals) was sublime for the Eagles. In Division 3, Springvale Districts handed Black Rock a 101-point loss. The Demons, led by Jacob Bakes and Lachlan Morrey (five goals), won 17.15 (117) to 2.4 (16) after holding Black Rock goalless for the first three quarters. Endeavour Hills made an inaccurate Ashwood pay, claiming a big 8.11 (59) to 1.10 (16) win at home. Daniel Batson and Ben Holland were involved in everything for the Falcons. Hallam was unable to overcome a slow start against South Yarra at home, falling 7.7 (49) to 4.5 (29). Mitchell Lambert and Matthew Studd were valiant all day for the Hawks. Hampton Park claimed another big win, proving too strong for Heatherton at Ross Street Reserve, running out 15.11 (101) to 6.7 (43) winners. Travis Davis and Shannon Henwood were best for the Redbacks, while Mark Stevens and Ben Clark-Henry were impressive

for Heatherton. In Division 4, Carrum Patterson Lakes came out firing and never looked back against Lyndale at home. Carrum Patterson Lakes ran out 19.12 (126) to 7.7 (49) winners. Brenton Rafferty and Alex Wilson combined for 10 goals as Toby Darma also starred for Carrum Patterson

Lakes. Danny Hartley and Matthew Leombruni battled hard for the Pumas. Sandown’s slow start proved costly against Cerberus, falling 11.14 (80) to 10.4 (64) at home. The Cobras were led particularly well by Josh Hurford and Shane Cosstick. Lyndhurst made light work of Dandenong

With the business end of the NPL season fast approaching, the region’s local teams had a mixed bag of results. In an important battle in the context of both teams’ seasons in NPL Vic action, the Dandenong Thunder was unable to take the points against Port Melbourne at George Andrews Reserve. With Port Melbourne sitting fifth and Dandenong ninth, just four competition points behind, a win for the Thunder would’ve been massive. Both the Thunder and the Sharks were unable to find the back of the net in a back-and-forth first half, before a Sam Smith beauty for the Sharks in the 80th minute was enough to get his team the win. The 1-0 loss, their second in a row, severely damages the Thunder’s chances of a post-season berth, but a Round 21 match-up against the second-bottom FC Bulleen Lions will provide Dandenong with a great chance to return

to the winners’ list. In NPL 2 East Vic action, Dandenong City strengthened its stranglehold on top of the ladder, while the Springvale White Eagles had to settle for a draw. Dandenong City, taking on Murray United at the Frank Holohan Soccer Complex, took the lead with a David Stirton goal in the 34th minute. The side then managed to keep its opposition out for the entirety of the game to claim a 1-0 win against the second-bottom Murray United outfit. The win, Dandenong City’s 15th of the season, has the side four wins ahead of the second-placed Moreland City FC. The Springvale White Eagles had a battle on their hands against Langwarrin SC at Lawton Park Reserve. With Langwarrin taking a 1-0 lead into half time, the White Eagles needed some inspiration coming out of the break and they got it immediately.

Just minutes into the second half, a beautiful strike from Karac got over the back of the Langwarrin defence and Delarno Pharoe put the ball in the back of the net for the all-important equaliser. With the ladder so tight - just five competition points separating Springvale in third from Langwarrin in seventh - both teams fought hard for a game-winning goal but were unable to find a way through tough defence. The points were shared with a 1-1 draw. Round 22 NPL 2 East Vic action sees more vital games take place with Dandenong City travelling to Gardiners Creek Reserve in Burwood to take on the Eastern Lions SC on Saturday afternoon. With the Lions needing as many competition points as possible, it will be on for young and old. Meanwhile, the Springvale White Eagles will take on Melbourne City in Bundoora on Saturday afternoon. Both teams head into the clash with eight wins.
