Gaming machines have again become a point of contention for a development proposal within the Noosa Shire. On Monday Noosa Councillors baulked at saying yes to an extra 15 poker machines to enable Tewantin Noosa RSL to house 195 machines within an upgraded gaming area. Council will investigate the possibility it could seize control from the state government over the local gambling industry. While currently not included in the Noosa Plan councillors plan to consider creating a policy on gaming machines. At the southern end of the shire at Peregian Beach the possibility of locating poker machines in a proposed surf club was raised by some members of the community as a major reason for its rejection. - Margaret Maccoll ● Cover picture: Dave Gleeson, surfshots.com.au

WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

THEY’RE DRIVING BLIND - LITERALLY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Six vision impaired to totally blind people aged 25 to over 70 years tossed away their white canes last Friday to drive cars. The group, members of the meet ups website Vision Impaired Sunny Coasters, family, friends, supporters led by Darryl Munck approached Road Craft Driver Training Centre to experience driving and they set about making it happen. Some had never driven a car and others had only recently lost their licenses due to their vision impairment. Road Craft centre CEO Sharlene Makin said while there were a few jaw dropping reactions from driving instructors when the idea was first mentioned they loved being involved. "We were approached and we thought we can do this," she said. "We have a supportive and safe ability to do this. We had a couple of pilots. There was no reason it couldn't work. "The cars have dual controls. They had very clear support and verbal instruction.

Darryl Munck leads the driving experience. "They all had a fantastic time." After driving on a private road within the facility they tested their skills in a wet skid area where they got to speed up then participate in a braking exercise. "It was quite exhilarating," she said. Darryl said by far the most popular aspect of the day was the fast drive and skidding experience.

Vision-impaired drivers. He said the bus home was abuzz with excitement with everyone keen to repeat the exercise. Sharlene said the community had been very kind to Road Craft and they

were happy to give back. Sharlene, who is completely deaf and uses a cochlear implant to hear, said they were happy to help people with disabilities. ●

NEW TRANSPORT STRATEGY SPARKS CONGESTION INTEREST BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Pedestrians cross at Hastings Street roundabout. Garth Prowd Bridge and provide transit lanes on Noosa Parade for buses and bikes. The plan was hatched after data was collected on traffic, parking and pedestrian use in peak and off peak periods in January and February to determine the key causes of congestions. The data found parking at peak times to be at capacity thoughout Hastings Street, Noosa National Park and Noosa Parade

but public car parks in Noosa Junction around The J theatre were only at 40 per cent capacity and behind the transit centre at only 50 per cent capacity. The data also found 80 per cent of people parked for less than three hours and 65 per cent less than two hours and the cause of the traffic wasn't simply due to the volume of vehicles. The study found the congestion was mainly due to pedestrians crossing the road

12392450-ACM30-18

To cut Noosa Head's traffic congestion problem around Hastings Street Noosa Council has proposed an e-transport strategy Mayor Tony Wellington said could become a test case for other regions and had garnered interest from the federal government, though questions have been raised over funding, community consultation its connection to public transport issues across the shire. Cr Wellington said the e-transport plan involved the introduction of Queensland's first e-bus fleet of "Noosa styled" buses and the provision of real time information to commuters on the location and arrival of buses through phone apps and electronic timetables. Under the proposal an e-bus charging station and depot will be located in the shire and an electric share bike service would connect travellers from buses to their end destinations. A new Transit Hub would be built to replace the one on Noosa Parade and a new pedestrian boulevard would connect the Transit Hub with Hastings Street to cut pedestrian activity at the Hastings Street roundabout. Council also plans to duplicate

at the Hastings Street roundabout, cars holding up the traffic while they waited to access a park or waited for another car to park and slow moving vehicles searching for a park. During one day over 13.5 hours from 6.30am to 8pm there were more than 7000 cars travelling both south and north and 12,000 pedestrian crossings (about one every four seconds) at Hastings Street roundabout. To further the plan Cr Wellington said Council had enlisted the help of a steering group and four working teams with each assigned to sort out the transport strategy priorities: the shuttle bus and park and ride, paid parking, transit lanes and walk and ride to school. The groups are assisted by five traffic and transport consultants. Cr Ingrid Jackson questioned the e-transport proposal she said had no business case or costings, no integrated planning with the wider Transport Strategy and had no community consultation. On Monday she voted against a motion that included seeking grant funding for the proposal. ●

But it is not just the boxing. Coach Evans also insists that a major factor of life in the Impact Club is the teaching of self-discipline, good manners and above all respect for others; and it is this attitude that has gained the unwavering support of parents. ‘’In certain parts of Australia there are definite signs that our streets are being inundated by youth, youth with no selfrespect and worst of all no respect for other people.” said the coach. ‘’In this gym that is totally unacceptable.’’ For Mark it all started in Victoria. Born in Preston in 1967 Marks family, three years later shifted to South Australia and settled in the Adelaide suburb of Modbury. Regarding his education he attended the Modbury High School until year 10. After working for some time as a cabinet maker on a wage of $86 per week, he then at age 16, moved to the Northern Territory where he obtained work in the abattoirs in Alice Springs. However it was while in the Territory that he later commenced an apprentice as a painter and on completion of his time in 94 shifted to Queensland. It was during his years in South Australia that he started boxing. “I started to learn in my mates’ back yard; his dad was a boxer and he became our teacher. While in Modbury I was living in a Housing Commission Estate and it was a pretty tough neighborhood. The streets were not exactly the safest place in town and so it was not long before I was introduced into the brutal art of streets fighting. That plus my back yard boxing lessons and I was soon capable of defending myself.” On shifting to Queensland Mark settled in Palmwoods and became involved in Martial Arts by joining a Kung Fu club in Nambour. “Despite the fact I trained for seven years during which time I became an

instructor, my heart was always in boxing.” Following his time in Palmwoods he shifted to Cooroy and it was then that his love for boxing really took off. While living in Cooroy he travelled to Gympie to train with Dennis Manger at the Gympie Boxing Club but later switched camps to train under John Burke who was rated as one of Australia’s top coaches. ‘’Believe it or not our boxing ring was made up of four star pickets driven into the ground behind his house; and for skipping we skipped on a large piece of ply wood. Pretty rugged set up but I realized in later life that it helped to give us a tough attitude to the sport.” Regarding his career as a fighter Mark who boxed as a light middleweight (96kg) said, “I had some 60 fights as an amateur, boxing all over the place; out to Charleville and Roma you name it. I did ok but soon realized that I would never become a world champion. So then I did two things. I started to cut back on fighting and began to help train the local lads; then thinking of my future I invested in land in Cooroy. ” The year 2000 saw Mark start in business as a painting contractor in Cooroy. Working under the banner of Evans Painting Contracting, the venture has been successful thus giving him the opportunity to not only provide for his family, wife Mel and three children, but has on several occasions, enabled him to provide employment for some of his boxing team. “Over the years I have had the opportunity to apprentice seven kids from the gym, thus giving them a trade and a kick start in their working career. With these boys being members of the club it also helps us to establish a more family environment not only amongst the squad but also the parents. You

couldn’t ask for a better situation.” While in 2005 the gym was slowly becoming a reality Mark had been thinking about a name. “I wanted a name that would really say something; something that would make an impact in our community. That is how I came to settle on the name Impact Boxing Academy. With that decision out of the way next was a club motto: this came much easier WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY, FOR THE COMMUNITY.” The club was on its way. “Since the club was started it has never been about money,” said Mark. “It’s about the kids. My club is run on a donation system for I understand that everyone’s financial system is different. If the family can afford to pay then it is $5 a session. All money is paid into an honesty box and all that money goes directly back into the gym for equipment etc. I started the club in the hope that I could provide a service for my local community and help guide some of our wayward youth in the right direction. Being a former boxer with a troubled background, I know how boxing and the discipline involved, made a difference to my life.” Being a man who believes that one should practice what one preachers, Mark has over the years, developed a working relationship with a local police officer Senior Sergeant Mal Scott. ‘’Mal and I have worked together for many years helping guide our troubled youth down a better pathway and so help keep them away from drugs and crime.” In what can only be described as a statement made by one who has experienced growing up on the streets of hard knocks, Coach Evans said, “I honestly believe that there is no such thing as a bad kid; sadly most of our troubled kids are purely a product of a bad environment.” Also, his endeavor with the youth of the community, resulted in the following. “I was given the opportunity through the Queensland Education Department to work with special needs children at the Cooroy State School. Add to this was a sport rec program which I designed to give the kids their choices in sport instead of pushing them down the cricket and football funnel. This program sees year 6 and 7 visit the gym once a week in their final term so they can experience a sport that most of them would not be aware of.” Both of these programs have proved successful and are conducted with no charge to either the school or the parents. “It is also interesting to note that by running these programs we are helping to eliminate the major problems of the Cowards Punch

and the School Yard Bully; something that worries many parents. Since opening Impact Boxing Academy we estimate that over 200 kids have now passed through the door and this has resulted in many members contesting tournaments throughout the country,” said Mark. The tournament results are definitely worthy of note. They have 16 registered boxers that have competed at Queensland, Australian and International level. Members have also represented their country in such tournaments as the World Titles, (Russia and India), Youth and Commonwealth Games, (Bahamas and Gold Coast) and Celtic Cup (Ireland.). This has resulted in a total of 10 gold 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. Then on the home front the club has won during 13 years of competition, 30 National and 60 Queensland Titles: there has also been numerous wins at various country championships. These tournaments have produced many outstanding fighters. Just to name a few, Ella Boot World and Youth Commonwealth Games medalist,Taylah Robinson Commonwealth Games and Indonesian medalist and the Cameron-Hands brothers, Sam and Ben winners of both National and Golden Glove titles. With the early success of his boxers drawing attention, Mark was offered a position on the staff on Boxing Australia and following this two years ago he was appointed President of Boxing Queensland. He has also held office as Assistant Coach of the Australian team. “I felt much honored by these appointments and I am grateful to my family and everyone who has supported me along the way; you can’t achieve these things by yourself you have to have a great support team and that is what I have. Also the Cooroy State School has given us for ten years great support by allowing our club to hold the annual Young Guns Tournament in their Community Hall. It is now one of the biggest tournaments in Australia.” The next project for Coach Mark Evans is to obtain a club bus. ‘’With the increasing number of tournaments in Queensland getting our team there has become a major problem: so we are looking at all avenues. It could be through sponsorship or some other arrangement. It is of the utmost importance; so we are open to discussion.” The success of the Impact Boxing Academy is but the tip of the iceberg. It is the politeness, good manners and character of these youthful warriors that is indeed the most pleasing aspect for those who come in contact. Well done Mr Evans - well done. ●

TIPS PAVE WAY TO THEATRE STARDOM BY MARGARET MACCOLL Australian musical theatre star Blake Bowden felt at home when he dropped by the audition on Saturday being held by local theatre group Mad About Theatre for their upcoming production of Annie the Musical. Blake said he began his career in amateur theatre as a child in Sydney and it was where he learnt the process of the theatre, from audition to rehearsal to performing in front of an audience, and the skills and discipline required. In Noosa to perform for the premiere of his own show Straight from the Hart on Saturday 28 July as part of the Noosa Alive Festival, Blake took time out from his preparations to encourage the young performers. "This is where I was at their age," he said. "In community theatre societies in Holroyd theatre and in the Hills District in Sydney. They did teach me the craft, how to do the same thing over and over again. It taught me so much." Blake praised the girls for their talent and dedication and spoke to them about his career. "Every show you have to audition," he told them. "It's always nerve-wracking." He advised the girls to try and have fun, telling them he had often forgotten dance

steps and lyrics to songs and it really didn't matter. "People want to see you can have fun," he said. "It's a fun job being on stage with all kinds of different people. You get to dress up and have a fun time." Blake told the group how he'd auditioned for The Wiggles Movie, was currently starring in a play, The Book of Mormon, in Sydney which he'd first seen as a Broadway show when he won a scholarship to study in New York and about the show he'd written and was performing for Noosa Alive. Director and choreographer of the Annie production, Madison Thew-Keyworth said having a professional actor like Blake talk to the young performers would show them it was possible for them to also follow that path. Mad About Theatre will be performing their musical, Disenchanted, on 27 and 28 July at the Noosa Arts Theatre as part of Noosa Alive. â—?

TALE OF JONAH AND THE WHALE BY HOLLIE HARRIS On Monday at 10:30am a whale was reported by two fishermen approximately one nautical mile out from the Noosa River mouth, entangled in rope and towing an orange buoy. Australian Institute for Marine Rescues (AIMR) representative, Jonah Cooper, tracked and observed the whale for about an hour and reported the whale was a sub adult in company with another whale. The entanglement appeared to be rope around the right tail fluke and trailing a plastic lobster trap float about a metre behind. The animal appeared to be in good condition with some abrasion marks present from the rope indicating the entanglement possibly occurred some weeks ago. Both

whales were making way on the northward migration at a speed between 3-4 knots. All information was relayed to Queensland DPI who would then determine what course of action to take. ●

REFRESHING NOOSA THE NEW CHALLENGE FOR TOURISM BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa needs to stay ahead of its global competitors in a market which has increasing expectations, according to Tourism Noosa chairman and general manager of Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas Steve McPharlin, who on Monday addressed a conference of about 200 local tourism providers. Steve said tourists were becoming increasingly more educated and had higher expectations. Cooking shows, for example,

have led to increased demands on food delivery and service, he said. “People are happy to pay for experiences,“ he said. “We have to ensure what we are offering is not stagnating. We are lucky we have a pristine environment and Noosa has a strong brand but to sustain it we need to stay ahead of the market.“ The Refresh Noosa conference brought together accommodation managers and owners with more than 30 exhibitors in a Tourism Noosa initiative to assist them to update and refresh their properties in order

to maintain a high quality experience to customers. The exhibitors came from local trades including electricians and plumbers, suppliers of hotel and resort goods including furniture, lighting and artwork and services such as interior designers, skincare consultants and solar power suppliers within the community. Roman Raudonikis from Zero Emissions Noosa was on hand to provide information to businesses wanting to reduce emissions while Plastic Free Noosa showed off a range of plastic free

options available to businesses. Hotel industry expert Michael MoretLalli spoke to the gathering on the benefits of investing in their assets. “We’ve got a lot of competing countries,“ he said. “Australia has struggled with accommodation that hasn’t stood up globally, particularly in the high end, and with the growth in the Asian market. Australia is starting to get a luxury product. People are starting to invest in their assets and increasing this will only result in being more competitive.“ ●

NEWS COUNCIL SEEKS CONTROLS ON POKIES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Tewantin-Noosa RSL CEO Phil Stephenson said the organisation would appeal to state government after Noosa Council on Monday delayed its decision on an application from the RSL to extend its gaming area with an additional 15 machines. At its General Meeting councillors voted to gain further advice on its powers to regulate poker machines before further considering the application. At present the regulation of poker machines is determined by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation in the Department of Justice and AttorneyGeneral. Council heard gaming machine numbers are capped across the state with licensed businesses able to apply for relinquished licenses in numbers of less than 20 annually without an assessment. Allocation is determined on community need. Noosa Council has no policy under its planning scheme on gaming machines and no authority to affect their regulation. Under the Noosa Plan, the operation of electronic gaming machines is best characterised as an entertainment or amusement activity. The RSL club had prior development approval from council for an extension to its gaming area which contained 180 gaming machines. Council officers recommended council agree to the RSL's application for an extension to its gaming area to allow for the

Tewantin Noosa RSL CEO Phil Stephenson extra 15 machines. Cr Jess Glasgow was in favour of the extra machines saying most people gambled responsibly and the gaming industry brought employment. Mayor Tony Wellington said he had concerns about the community impact of gambling. He cited research conducted in Victoria which found gambling resulted in increased health and crime issues and said benefits to the community of proceeds from gambling machines were overstated with only 1.3-6.6 per cent going to the community. Mr Stephenson said the research in Victoria had no relevance to the situation

with the RSL in Noosa and its support of the community. "The club may make a profit of $1.5million and out of that $443,000 has gone back in community support," he said. "We have the turnover that warrants the machines." Mr Stephenson said while public gambling was potentially a problem they encouraged problem gamblers to seek help and had welcomed the self-exclusion of 30 people with gambling issues from the club. He said council's move to increase its control over gaming machines in clubs and pubs could cause "a bit of an uproar". ●

ON TRACK FOR WORLD RECOGNITION BY JOY RINGROSE Cooran- based equestrian Billy Raymont has been making his mark in the world of international showjumping this year. After leaving Australia in February, and being in the money in Hong Kong, Paris, Holland and Germany, on the horse Oaks Redwood (Bas to his mates), Billy returned to Australia for two months to compete the World Cup horse Anton successfully in Queensland shows. They won several Grand Prix competitions while Billy was home. Returning to Europe at the beginning of July, Billy immediately put the wellrested Bas into work and two weeks later they went to Belgium to compete in a huge show, from 3-15 July, the Knokke Hippique, against many of the world’s best show jumpers. There are 221 participants in this series of 10 jumping classes. Billy was only able to compete in three, but placed well in two classes and has jumped him up to number 38 on the leaderboard, ahead of the two other Australians competing - Jamie Kermond and Hilary Scott. In the second week of the show Billy was placed 9th out of 48 riders and on Thursday 12 July 12th was placed 8th out of 97 riders in the 1.45m class. Billy and Bas are on the shortlist of five riders to go to the World Equestrian Games in South Carolina in September. Jamie and his horse Yandoo Oaks Constellation are stabled in Holland with Billy and Bas, and the two friends have been travelling to the shows together since February. Edwina, Australia’s top overseas rider, has withdrawn from the WEG team, making Billy’s participation a foregone conclusion, although the team has not been announced yet. Edwina, who recently had a baby, will be attending WEG to support and encourage her fellow Australians. The world Equestrian Games are held every four years, in between the Olympic Games. This is Billy’s first foray into world championship show jumping, and Bas has only been competing at big events since last October but they have the world of international showjumping sitting up and taking notice. ●

NEWS

POLITICAL DEAL SEALS FOREST FATE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Parks Association's long held vision of a continuous National Park running from Coolum to Cooloola has moved closer to reality, following a recent NPA-conceived agreement between a private timber company, the state government, Noosa Council, and NPA. At Friday's Environment Forum, NPA president Dr Michael Gloster, revealed the behind-the-scenes negotiating that led to the agreement which has been an ambition of the association for the past 25 years. Dr Gloster said the plan to transfer the Ringtail and Yurol forests from timber plantations to national parks was first hatched by Noosa conservationist Dr Arthur Harrold in the 1980s when the forests were state owned and operated. NPA came close to realising their dream when the issue became a 1991 election promise of the Wayne Gossled Labor government. But the Goss government wasn't re-elected and the plan was lost, he said. In 2011 when Peter Beattie was Premier the government handed 1200 hectares of state forest in Tewantin to national park. "It was a start," he said. After Anna Bligh became Premier a further 1200 hectares of forest was transferred to national park and the remaining forests were privatised. The move worked in NPA's favour and they decided to approach operators, Hancock Queensland (HQ) Plantations, with a financial offer. "When it was run by the Department of Forestry there was no way we could offer them money," he said. Dr Gloster said when links were

found between the international arm of Hancock timber resource company and environmental organisation The Nature Conservancy a meeting was organised which included The Thomas Foundation director Rowland Hill, then Noosa Mayor Noel Playford and Dr Gloster. They were told $3.5m would seal the deal. "It's not a lot for 2400 hectares," Dr Gloster said. "I knew it was doable. We had half a million in the bank because we set up Noosa National Park Information Centre to make money." Dr Gloster said he met with Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and Noosa Council's CEO with an aim for three-way deal between council, state government and NPA. He said council quickly worked out it was a good deal which could be invested in using Environmental Levy funding. Noel Playford who had become president of Local Government Association of Queensland and formed an "impressive network of politicians", led a meeting with the director generals of the departments of fisheries and forests and environment and parks and wildlife. "They were comfortable with the financials," Dr Gloster said. Dr Gloster said the three-way deal involved the state government paying HQ Plantations $3.5m upfront, with Noosa Council and NPA contributing over time and the land being converted to conservation land over a 10 year period. "In putting this deal together we had a lot of cards fall right," he said. "And we were very well prepared." ●

NOOSA MAINTAINS PEACE WITH ARMISTICE REMEMBRANCE Noosa Council will commemorate the centenary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I by recreating an event that occurred 100 years ago. "When news of the signing of the Armistice reached Australia, communities nationwide took to the streets to rejoice the end of four long years of conflict and worry," Noosa Library Service Heritage Librarian Jane Harding said. "In Noosa, the locals chose to celebrate on the river, with boats decked

Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch. There will be a wide range of activities including entertainment by The Andrews Sisters Tribute, the Noosa Chorale and other local community groups, information and displays from relevant community service groups and a community art installation . The event is being funded through a $20,326.36 Queensland Government's Anzac Centenary Grants Program grant and the Noosa Council Heritage Levy. To be involved phone 5329 6534. ●

out in patriotic bunting. The Looking Forward to Peace community event held on the river and in Tewantin Memorial Park on Sunday 11 November will also reflect on subsequent world conflicts and ongoing efforts to achieve world peace. "What better way to commemorate this day than by the community coming together again in the park and on the river?" Jane said. The event will commence after the traditional 11am service held by the

The 1918 peace flotilla on the Noosa River. This will be re-enacted at the Looking Forward to Peace event celebrating the centenary of the Armistice on Sunday November 11.

THE LOWDOWN

REMEMBERING BEC ROSS Family and friends of Bec Ross gathered at Tewantin cemetery on Friday to lay a plaque on the grave of Ben Ross to honour the memory of his wife Bec Ross. Born Sarah Rebecca Eliza Ferguson on 2 April, 1888, Bec was a long-term Tewantin resident who would be remembered by many for her years of hard work and dedicated service to the Tewantin Noosa RSL Women's Auxiliary. She was recognised for her efforts with Life membership. Bec grew up with her brothers Joe and Bill and parents Joseph and Eliza Ferguson in Werin Street Tewantin. In 1912 she married Ben Ross, also of Tewantin and the couple moved to Stradbroke Island where Ben worked from 1913-1915 as an oyster man for the Moreton

Bay Oyster Company. After joining the army he served during WWI in the Middle East and France where he was badly wounded. He was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner-of-war until 1918 when he was repatriated home. On his return Ben worked again as an oyster man for the Moreton Bay Oyster Company, but this time in the Noosa River System. The couple bought a cottage from Mr Horsemen which was loaded on two oyster punts at Rocky Point, Lake Weyba by Ben's brothers, Tom and Jack, and transported on the river to Ward Street, Tewantin, before being reassembled on their waterfront

The track, produced by James Russell of Heliport Studios in Buderim with the support of Noosa Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund grant, has been receiving airplay on radio stations in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Victoria. He will perform Bad Love at Noosa Alive’s Fire In The Sky on July 21 from

property by Ben and his brother-in-law Carl Hage. The cottage remained there for 60 years and Bec lived in it well into her 80s. The couple had seven children but tragically lost a daughter, Phillis, as a baby. Ben passed away in 1952. Two sons, Ted and Keith died in 1955 and a third son, Royce, passed away in the 1970s. Soon after Bec who could no longer care for herself went to live with her granddaughter Margaret in Brisbane and later to a nursing home where she passed away. The Tewantin property was sold and the cottage demolished. ●

HELP COAST GUARD TO HELP US

LENSCAPE

It was great to see John Nicholson safely rescued by the wonderful Noosa Coast Guards and sorry to hear about the boat. This fabulous volunteer organisation has to do its own fund-raising to survive. They are well worth supporting and some of their generous support comes from some of the less well-off rescues. S. Kenrick, Noosa

NOOSA NEEDS MORE WALKWAYS Noosa Council and councillors should be congratulated for the latest budget. Well done. But one question remains - how much money has been allocated for new concrete walkways on footpath in the suburbs? Only newer suburbs have concrete walkways, making it safe for pedestrians. All the older suburbs lack this safety, with only a few major streets having concrete walkways. Noosa Council recommends children ride/walk to school, residents to walk for fitness and walk to shops or beaches. But we all have to walk on the streets, jumping out of the way of oncoming cars. Even to catch the local bus we have to walk on the streets to get to a bus stop. I wrote a letter to our mayor Tony Wellington and got a nice reply, stating council did not have sufficient funds for this project. This is not good enough - we all pay our rates, and should all be able to walk safely on the streets. The council should have a future plan for getting concrete walkways on all streets. Residents’ safety should come first, do we really need someone to either be killed or injured before this is done? If council has about 1000 streets needing upgrading, maybe they can allocate work for approximately 50 streets a year, so that in maybe 10-15 years all streets are safe with proper walkways on the footpath. I urge all the Noosa councillors to consider and to discuss this big safety program. Some residents have put in concrete walkways in front of their house; but if they are not all connected it’s not very useful. You can’t walk on the grass as it’s very uneven and some residents are using this as their parking spot. I did some research contacting some residents in most of the suburbs including the hinterland suburbs, and not one could tell me where a concrete walkway has been constructed on a local footpath. Noosa Council gives away a lot of funding

Peter Smith snapped a beauty for Lenscape this week. "A Clearwing Hawk Moth which I discovered as I was about to remove a dead avocado tree from the garden. Luckily it remained in place long enough for me to run and collect my camera." Please send us your wildlife, landscape or lifestyle pictures to "Lenscape" at newsdesk.com.au. to various clubs and organisations, but it’s time to look after the residents first. It seem it’s all about the visitors, another $5.6m for the Noosa beach walkway and nearly $1m for the Noosa boardwalk. So please provide safety first for the Noosa Residents. Preben K. KEEP NOOSA AS IT IS Yesterday I drove through Maroochydore and had a vision of what Noosa could have become had we not de-amalgamated. All along Aerodrome Road, Alexandra Road, and in the Cotton Tree district, were mile after mile of new high rises. The Gold-Coastification of Maroochydore is now a fait accompli. As someone who fought for the de-amalgimation of Noosa, I am deeply grateful that the people of Noosa had the good sense to overwhelmingly support this move, and to subsequently elect the mayoral candidate who was not funded by developers. Our judgement has been richly rewarded. The money that was being skimmed off to the Sunshine Coast Council, is now being invested locally, and throughout the shire we are seeing the rewards of once again being properly funded, with the council taking responsibility for the Noosa River; maintaining our parks and gardens really well; taking responsibility for community structures such as the Cooroy Hall; and planning countless new infrastructure projects - all while keeping rates to CPI or less. We need to remain vigilant in order to maintain the Noosa that we love. Joy Ringrose, Pomona

ENGLISH NOT SO LUCKY An English comedian’s years ago catchphrase was “You lucky people.“ I think there would now be a few in England who would dispute that if asked. My 83 years sister-in-law living in the

Midlands (on the phone to my wife tonight) told her she rang for an appointment to see her local GP and was told it would be a threeweek wait. The alternative was to go to the surgery early on a Wednesday, Tuesday or Friday morning and they take in the first 25 patients. “You unlucky people.“ I think they need to “Brixet" from their National Health System. If they still have one? E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

CAN WE DO WITHOUT COAL? While we are having bitterly cold early mornings with not a breath of wind, nor a ray of sunshine, our heating, toaster, microwave and computer, are working. What energy source could be providing this wonderful, essential electricity? Could it be that despicable, “dirty" coal which our politicians think we should do without? Case Smit, Noosaville

ELANDA BECOMING MORE BEAUTIFUL I just wanted to comment on the article Noel Bird put in the Noosa Today this Thursday (12 July) - When is “enough enough"? Elanda is a beautiful place and has been made even more beautiful by the work that has been done out there and can only go towards making tourism in the area stronger and affordable for people with children who just want to go there and pitch their tents and set up their caravans and enjoy the many facilities available to them. It has been a rundown area for such a long time and now someone has come along with the foresight of developing the area for the better. Claudia Scott, Tewantin

WHAT VALUE FOR RATES? Once again Mayor Tony Wellington is blowing Noosa Council’s trumpets after achieving a $94 (25 cents/day) rate rise which is cheaper than the Sunshine Coast Council. But that’s where the comparison stops and before you get your pen to paper and start abusing me as an anti-Noosa council serial pest, think about it. What major infrastructure and improvements have occurred within the Noosa Shire in the last few years? You have got a $6 million road to nowhere (Dr Pages Road) used by about 20 drivers a day, and about to get a $4 million “state of the art” boardwalk that was not actually needed. Meanwhile they are still struggling to complete their capital works, with the hinterland roads in desperate need of repair, nothing is happening with the dreadful parking situation in Noosa Heads, our youth are leaving town to find work and affordable accommodation, and small businesses are moving south for a better deal. In short Noosa ratepayers may be paying cheaper rates than Sunshine Coast ratepayers, but what have you got to show for it? Ask your council... Dom Massoni, Verrierdale

KEEPING RATES DOWN Does Cr Jackson agree with anything her fellow councillors suggest? Firstly, it was more transparency for a council that is one of the most transparent in Queensland. Now it’s that they haven’t increased our rates enough! I nearly choked on my muesli when I read that. I don’t know who Cr Jackson is talking to but what I hear is that staff are very responsive and fast acting on issues. I would like to commend Mayor Tony Wellington, the other councillors and council staff for their fantastic efforts to not only keep our rates down, but also at the same time keeping Noosa looking wonderful. Thankyou. Maryanne Degrassi, Noosaville noosatoday.com.au

Retro Glammer

1 Cambridge Court, Tewantin In one of Old Tewantin’s most coveted streets, this once grand home retains a regal air about her. The irst home to be built in the Riverview estate on Cambridge Court in the mid-1990s, it is nearly dwarfed by its multi-million dollar neighbours, underscoring the opportunity presented. Her appearance may be a bit thread bare but the astute buyer will see that any expenditure on updating will be greatly rewarded. See past her weathered exterior, the old tiled loor & faded carpets & take in the voluminous crystal chandelier at the front entrance, the Bill Mackay painting on the living room wall & the ceiling height to appreciate the transformation a well-planned makeover would achieve. There is no doubt she needs some work, but with character features throughout, great bones & a picture perfect high-value neighbourhood, this is the restoration project for which you have been looking.

But it is the easy stroll of around 200m that will take you to the river’s edge to put the paddle board in the water, to stroll the river bank to the ferry, or to simply enjoy an afternoon glass of wine with the neighbours that reiterates the power of location in real estate values.

INDUSTRY NEWS

OVERALL confidence in Queensland's property industry remains fairly constant, with only small variations in business confidence levels since last quarter. The ANZ/Property Council Survey revealed confidence rose by one index point this quarter, reflecting a general stable view of most factors driving sentiment across the industry, according to the Property Council's Queensland Executive Director, Chris Mountford. "In the previous 12 months, the Queensland property industry has experienced a period of change and uncertainty, with increases to land tax and foreign investor taxes set to take effect from 1 July," he said. He said the increase in taxes was a factor holding back stronger gains in sentiment. "The one big change in confidence seen in this quarter appears in the industrial sector, which has climbed seven index points," Mr Mountford said. "There is growing appetite for logistics and warehousing. In recent months we have seen an uplift in projects been delivered to meet this demand." ●

DESIGNER ADDS TO THE VALUE A NOOSA Junction design studio played an integral role in the success of Parkridge Noosa. CLO Studios added its interior design and property styling expertise to the hugely successful mixed-use project. Owner Chloe Tozer said the design and location of Parkridge Noosa was as impressive as any project her family-owned business had worked on, including Mantra in Brisbane and Noosa-based residential projects Tingirana Resort and Noosa on the Beach. "We've built up a great working relationship with the Parkridge Noosa development and sales team, they are very professional and amongst the best I have worked with," Chloe said. "We also share similar design aesthetics and visions, making the process of executing the interior styling at the final stages of Parkridge a breeze.

"It comes as no surprise to us that Parkridge Noosa has recorded $100m in sales over the past six month. If the view and location alone doesn't sell, then the detailed design and five-star finishes of the apartments certainly will. "We've met a number of the purchasers already and they are eagerly looking forward to working with us to achieve an interior that reflects their personal design style and aesthetic that seamlessly work in with the Parkridge location." Chloe said her team's design inspiration came from the natural finishes used within the apartments and the contemporary feel of the space. "We have implemented a traditional, light colour pallet and layered black accents throughout to balance the interior with the well-executed edgy exterior pallet," she said. "Our design aesthetic can be recognised through the eclectic choice

in décor which has been layered into a contemporary style. "Parkridge is one of the most exciting projects we have worked on, it is its own oasis with exclusive undiscovered panoramic views of Lake Weyba. "This inspired us to push boundaries and choose furniture that offers flexibility in design, introducing Noosa to CLO's unique style." The Parkridge Noosa display suite is now open to the public from 10am to 2pm daily. For more information, visit: www.parkridgenoosa.com or to arrange a personal viewing call Jeremy on 0418 943 787. ●

SOCIAL SCENE

A BLOOMIN’ GOOD TIME WITH EXPERTS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens and Slow Food Noosa member Cooloola Berries were among the hundreds of exhibitors to join garden experts and enthusiasts at the Queensland Garden Expo over the weekend at Nambour Showgrounds. Popular celebrity gardener Costa Georgiadis wandered though the expo's kitchen garden to the calls of "we love you Costa" as he chatted about the many benefits of gardening. Costa implored gardeners to take inspiration from the gardens and plants on display but ensure they suit their individual gardens. "If I can leave you with one thing it's the biggest thing you can get success from is your failure, then you'll know that plant didn't work," he said. "You can get frustrated with it or you can assess why it didn't work. It'll change the way you look at your garden." With speakers at multiple stages throughout the expo, while Costa spoke about gardens fellow gardener Jerry ColebyWilliams was sprouting the benefits of compost. "If you don't have a worm farm use chopped organic sugarcane," he said. "I've found this is what the worms choose and they drag it down through the soil." Thousands of visitors attended the expo demonstrating the level of interest in gardening in the region.

FOCUS ON … King of the Mountain

FUN FOR EVERYONE ON THE MOUNTAIN Long after inspiring one of Australian band Midnight Oil's most iconic songs, Mt Cooroora in Pomona will again challenge race entrants as they compete in the 40th anniversary of the notoriously steep 4.2 kilometre Bendigo Bank 'King of the Mountain' Challenge. Held over the 21-22 July weekend, future aspiring champions aged 9-13 years will compete in the third Zinc 96.1FM Prince and Princess Race on Saturday 21 July before the festival's main race at 2pm on Sunday 22 July. This year's festival will also debut the True Value Hardware King of the Mountain Bike Ride on Sunday 22 July. Aimed at beginner, intermediate and advanced level cyclists, the fun ride through local national parks is expected to attract those keen to

explore another side of Pomona's beautiful environment. Registrations will be held on Sunday 22 July at 8am at the Pomona State School before the ride begins at 9am. Groups will be led by experienced riders to their own level of skill and experience. Bike hire is available and there are lucky draw prizes up for grabs! For more information contact Jeff Langton 0413 840 788. Evidence of the diversity of the festival's attractions can be found in its jam-packed program offering something for everyone including the Nestle 3KM Family Fun Run designed for families with children aged 4+ years, heritage markets, amusement rides, Livelife Pharmacy Skate Park competition and live music and free entertainment throughout the day. ●

FOCUS ON … Health Wellness & Beauty

HAVE YOUR SAY BY HOLLIE HARRIS It's no secret that sugary drinks are harmful to our health. But to help Queenslanders reduce their intake of sugary drinks and influence policies around this, we want to hear from locals about the issue. This month Cancer Council Queensland and Heart Foundation launched an Everyday Health Survey on sugar-sweetened beverages, aiming to identify consumer habits, determine understanding of the health impacts of sugary drinks, and assess support for proposed regulations to reduce consumption of these products. The findings will enable organisations to develop new campaigns and advocate for regulations that will positively impact the health of Queenslanders. I encourage people to speak out and have their say on the future of sugary drinks. Sugar-sweetened beverages are a major source of sugar in the Australian diet - yet

we know that these beverages have little or no nutritional value, provide excess energy, and lead to weight gain. Although many factors influence obesity, research indicates sugary drinks play a significant role in driving up rates - which is an established risk factor for chronic diseases, including cancer. It's our priority to combat this weighty issue, and advocate for changes in our community including marketing restrictions and a 20 per cent levy on sugary drinks. If you live in Queensland and are 18 and over, don't miss out on having your say. Complete the survey at www.cancerqld.org. au/everydayhealthsurvey by July 31. ●

THREE … Options to sugary drinks

REMEDIAL MASSAGE & ENERGY HEALING Clint Smith has been a successful Remedial Therapeutic Masseur based in Noosa for over 20 years. He has worked at the Hyatt Coolum Resort, with Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Sports Physio Clinics. Invited and worked for many elite athlete groups i.e. Australian Wallabies, Olympic and Paralympic Swimmers.

Ditch the sugary drinks for good with these yummy options.

In more recent years Clint has now included more subtle styles of treatment. He is a gifted practitioner in addressing “challenges” we might encounter, tightness in necks, shoulders, lower back/hip pain are common issues. As well as massage, Clint offers the ‘fine tuning’ of Energy Healing, Orion /Chiron Healing, Reiki, and Chakra balancing. Those familiar with the benefits of massage on the physical and mental space can add to that feeling of ‘surrender’. Energy Healing can increase the benefit of massage, by helping the patient acknowledge the tension / stress on a deeper level, often releasing its ‘hold’. Sessions can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs. Often stress and anxiety become a physical tension within the muscular system. Modern New Age writers, scientists, practitioners, even mystics from the past acknowledge stress and tension become almost infused within our cells / physical body. The human body will restore itself more often than not, a good practitioner just helps that process.

1

DIY flavoured water - This is one of the easiest way to add a little flavour to your drink AND reduce your sugar intake. You can add any fruit such as strawberries, melon, lemon or any herbs like mint and thyme to your water. This is also a great way to ensure you're drinking adequate amounts of water each day and staying hydrated. If you like a little fizz then substitute plain water for sparkling.

2

Iced Teas - When we say iced teas we don't mean the recipes where you add spoonful after spoonful of sugar. Instead choose your favourite herbal blend or a green tea, brew it as you usually would and then pop it into the fridge for an hour to chill. You can also add some lemon or orange slices to add a little zing to the tea.

3

Smoothies - Make the most of seasonal fruit by creating quick and delicious smoothies. Try Kiwi and coconut, avocado and berry, blackberry and banana, peach and honey, choc-banana...the list is endless. Kids love smoothies and they are so packed full of goodness.

Bullet For My Valentine - Gravity

Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan

Good Girls

Bullet For My Valentine's profile and experience as high-profile heavy-hitters seemingly belies their relative youth. It feels like they've been kicking about far longer than the little over a decade since The Poison broke them worldwide. Six albums in, change seems inevitable, and perhaps mandatory for the Welsh melodic metal mob. Sizeable slabs of atmospheric electronica and icy synths throughout are heavily noticeable, adding some extra weight to their sound. The end result is still recognisable though, with cuts like the grooving Over It and the title track boasting a melodic sensibility that has propelled them to the brink of headlining certain European festivals. Gravity may result in the furrowing of brows. ●

Anna Kerrigan, nearly twelve years old, accompanies her father to visit Dexter Styles, a man who, she gleans, is crucial to the survival of her father and her family. She is mesmerized by the sea beyond the house and by some charged mystery between the two men. Years later, her father has disappeared and the country is at war. Anna works at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, where women are allowed to hold jobs that once belonged to men, now soldiers abroad. She becomes the first female diver, the most dangerous and exclusive of occupations, repairing the ships that will help America win the war. One evening at a nightclub, she meets Dexter Styles again... ●

A lot happens in the pilot episode of Good Girls. We're introduced to Beth (Christina Hendricks), Annie (Mae Whitman) and Ruby (Retta), three overworked suburban mums, struggling to keep it all together. Beth has just discovered her husband Dean (Matthew Lillard) is having an affair with his secretary and that he's refinanced the house ... three times. He's also got the family into a hell of a lot of credit card debt. Beth's younger sister, Annie, is a single mum who's stuck in a custody battle with her wealthy ex, and Ruby's daughter, Sara, desperately needs a kidney transplant. The solution? A life of crime ... ●

A SPOT OF TEA? Jeff Martin, lead singer and guitarist of the iconic Canadian band The Tea Party, is heading to The Imperial Hotel Eumundi for a solo acoustic gig on Thursday 26 July as part of his The Stars in the Sands tour. He will be supported by multi-instrumentalist Mitch King. The Stars In The Sand tour will bring an exciting element for fans with a release of an EP available exclusively at the shows. The 4 track EP will feature original compositions with Moroccan musings, featuring sounds recorded in Morocco where Jeff led a musical odyssey with local musicians and fans three years ago. Jeff Martin's reputation as a worldrenowned live performer is well known and he has been labelled everything from "child prodigy", "virtuoso guitarist", and a "singer with perfect pitch". Jeff formed The Tea Party with his lifelong friends, Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Burrows in 1990 after many years of playing in bands

together throughout their childhood. In addition to his incredible career with The Tea Party, Jeff has carved out a distinctive and successful career for himself as a solo artist, various other side projects and as an acclaimed and highly sought after producer. His life has vastly been an exquisite journey immersing himself in many cultures, and learning to play the traditional instruments from those cultures from the masters of the craft - in particular the Middle East, and sub continents of India. His home and studio are filled with ancient instruments he's collected on his travels - all of which he plays fluently. A Jeff Martin show is one that moves the audience to realms like no other and many have likened his acoustic shows to 'a religious experience' that stays with them forever. This will be a powerful musical journey not to be missed. Doors open 7.30pm TICKETS: Pre-sale $30 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $35 at the door. ● 12393572-RC30-18

STICKY DATE MARTINI Everyone's favourite winter dessert - sticky date pudding - in martini form. We'll cheers to that! INGREDIENTS ¡ 160g (1 cup, lightly packed) brown sugar, plus extra, to serve ¡ 4 medjool dates, pitted, finely chopped, plus extra, to serve (optional) ¡ 40ml vodka ¡ 20ml butterscotch schnapps ¡ Ice, to shake ¡ Caramel sauce, to drizzle ¡ Whipped cream, to serve

COOK

METHOD Step 1 Place brown sugar, dates and 250ml (1 cup) water in a small saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium heat for 1 minute or until the sugar

Step 2 Place the vodka, schnapps, ice and 100ml date syrup in a cocktail shaker. Shake well to combine. Step 3 Drizzle caramel over the rims of 2 martini glasses. Fill with the martini mixture. Top with cream and sprinkle with extra brown sugar. Serve with extra dates, if you like. Leftover date syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to a month. TRY THIS … Shakespeare festival

CALLING ALL SHAKESPEAREANS BY HOLLIE HARRIS

THREE … tips to beat stage-fright

Veronica Neave.

Entries are now open for the coast's Second Annual Shakespeare Festival to be held at Noosa Arts Theatre 13 October 2018. Theatre groups, schools, actors, musicians and dancers from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are invited to compete. They can choose to perform Scenes, Sonnets, Music and Dance, and will be judged by highly respected theatre actor Veronica Neave. Veronica will be conducting a workshop on Shakespeare where actors and directors can learn the art of all things Shakespearean. Veronica has appeared in over fifty stage productions within Australia from Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams to writing and appearing in various shows with Kate Champion's Force Majeure and has worked in a number of TV series as well. Veronica has featured in a number of films and has just completed a lead role in the Australian TV series "Wanted". Known for her versatility in the Arts industry she is a performer, writer, teacher, dancer and director. Veronica attended drama classes from the age of five throughout her schooling culminating in a Bachelor of Arts (theatre) at three years at the University of Southern Queensland. She has worked professionally as an Actor in film, television and theatre in Australia and overseas ever since. After seven years working as a classical actor she decided to merge her acting with physical acting working with Legs on the Wall and Rock and Roll Circus, travelling the world

Avoid the stage-fright jitters with these simple tips (and avoid coffee!) -

for several years. Her experiences honed her skills to become more of a specialist performer. Using her training in yoga, dance and balance acrobatics she became passionate about marrying the techniques of text based theatre and movement. Her wide and varied experience in the arts over the last 21 years

has seen her engaged as performer, writer, director, dramaturge and teacher. Bookings are now open for festival entries as well as the workshop with Veronica Neave. Go to www. noosaartstheatre.org.au for more details. ●

1

Relax your body. To overcome stage fright, there are a few things you can do to relax your body before going on the stage. Easing the tension from your body can help steady your voice and relax your mind. Rehearse your lines. If you mess up on stage, don't panic! Make it seem like the act.

2

Meditate. On the morning before your performance, or even an hour before, take 15-20 minutes out of your day to meditate. Find a relatively quiet place where you can take a comfortable seat on the ground. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing as you relax every part of your body.

3

Set a "stop time" for your anxiety. On the day of your performance, tell yourself that you can allow yourself to be nervous for a certain amount of time, but that after a certain hour -- say, 3 PM -- all anxiety will go out the door. Just setting this goal and making this promise to yourself will make it much more likely to happen.

A RULING FROM BEHIND THE YELLOW SILK SCREEN David Rosier from the Arts Society UK will bring his 25 years experience working in SE Asia when he speaks to Noosa's Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFA) in Tewantin on Saturday. While in Hong Kong David assembled a collection of about 700 predominantly Qing Dynasty (16441911), Imperial and related textiles, costumes and dress accessories. David is a past committee member of the Hong Kong Textile Society and a frequent speaker on Chinese Imperial Insignia of rank, court costume, dress accessories and the mechanics of the Imperial government and emperors of the Qing Dynasty. His lecture seeks to provide a balanced insight into the life and achievements of one of the most important women in Chinese Imperial history, the Dowager Empress CiXi. Looking beyond Cixi's desire to force China into the modern world, he will provide an insight into her life in the extensive gardens of her beloved summer palace and her passion for painting, embroidery and fashion design. From there she sought to understand the culture, politics and role of women in the west through her relationships with leading western women. al Importance, the Ramsar Convention aims to halt the worldwide loss of wetlands and conserve those that remain. Australia has 65 Ramsar sites, with five, including nearby Moreton Bay and Great Sandy Strait, situated in Queensland. At Noosa Parks Association's Friday Environment Forum on July 20, Sheena Gillman, Chair of Conservation BirdLife Southern Queensland will explain the significance of and threats to these important Ramsar sites. "The Great Sandy Strait is a truly significant conservation zone and a Key Biodiversity Area which essentially provides for Critically Endangered Migratory Shorebirds. Why therefore place at risk the very values you seek to protect?" asks Ms Gillman. To learn more about this extensive investigation, join the audience at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive Noosaville from 10am for coffee and a chat. The forum commences at 10.30am and finishes at approximately 12.15pm. You are invited to learn more about the birds of Wallace Park by meeting Valda and friends in the car park at 8.30am. 2018 QFA DIVISION 1 HART SPORT CUP

Last Friday night I was watching women’s finals day at Jeffrey’s Bay while having a beer o’clock session with friends in Agnes Water, and, well, it was getting a little rowdy as we watched the amazing Steph Gilmore’s dramatic return to form and the top of the leader board. In between the oohs and aahs as we watched Steph’s glorious carves on the big, clean faces of epic J-Bay, some one said, “What about that time you took the piss out of her! Did you ever apologise?” Well, no, I didn’t, as a matter of fact, but I heard indirectly that she thought it was hilarious. There was a chorus of enquiry along the lines of, what did you do to her and why? So, in a break between heats, I found Steph’s controversial promo video on YouTube and played it for the group. Then I played my send-up of it. There were screams of laughter and howls of distaste. Even those who laughed loudest said they found my cameo deeply disturbing. Four and a half years later I found it a bit disturbing too! So here’s the story, and if you missed out on this back in 2013, feel free to track it down on YouTube and watch it, but not in front of the children or on a full stomach. Steph had recently shifted sponsor allegiance, from Rip Curl to Roxy, and whereas Rip Curl loved her powerhouse hacks and grace on the face, Roxy was more excited about her long legs and sexy smile, so they made a sexy video. It was meant to be a tease for the upcoming Roxy Pro France, but it was a tease of rather different kind. In two minutes there was not a wave surfed, just soft focus, dreamy shots of Steph getting out of bed, taking a shower, and wandering around a chi-chi Biarritz apartment in various states of undress while she checked the webcams, as you do. Sexy Steph got a million hits overnight, which no doubt proved to the Roxy marketing wiz kids that they were on the money, but the hard-core surfers and the feminists were appalled. It was begging to be parodied, and as it happened, Shaun and Carol Cairns of Panga Productions and I were about to start our annual social media video campaign promoting the Noosa Festival of Surfing. We were looking for a funny idea and this was it. Shaun was on the blower within minutes of seeing the Steph clip. “Mate, it’s a no-brainer. We just follow it frame for frame, same sexy music, misty shots, and then at the end instead of Roxy Pro France coming soon, it’s the Noosa Festival.” “Mmm,” I said. I was thinking that Carol in a blonde wig would be just about perfect, but that we would need a punch line. “So what’s the punch line?” “Mate, you play the Steph role! That’s the

Screen shots from our rival videos. Anything she can do, I can do…ah, sort of. Steph gets up. punch line!” I could have said no, not in a million years, and a lot of people would no doubt say that’s what I should have said. But the Panga duo were so enthusiastic, and it sounded like fun, so we did it. Carol got me kitted in a 60-year-old man version of everything Steph wore - skimpy knickers, denim cut-offs, striped matelot top, pink rashie - and off we went. Where Steph daintily steps out of her dacks to get into the shower, I drop mine to sit on the bog; where she starts the day with a healthy smoothie, I have a greasy egg and bacon burger. This is all done tastefully, you understand. Three hours later, it’s in the can. A brilliant edit job and two days later we’re going viral. We might not have Steph’s numbers but our little stunt gets picked up by every major surf website in the world, and soon the mainstream media is onto it. I was in Canberra, doing a job about a million miles removed from my unlikely new career as a cross-dressing porn star, when ABC Breakfast phoned and asked if I could get myself to the nearest studio for an interview that would be intercut with scenes from our video. Now it was getting seriously silly, but I turned up at sparrow’s the next day at the Parliament House studio like a lamb to the slaughter. The many questions could be summarized with one word: why? “Well, as surfers we weren’t very impressed by the presentation of Steph as a lingerie model, so we thought it deserved to be satirized.” What I should have said was we wanted to promote the hell out of our event and didn’t care how we did it. It wouldn’t have mattered because, despite the cackles I could hear emanating from the studio couch in another city, the ABC weren’t buying it. Virginia Trioli took a few swings at me in a newspaper column for daring to bare my flab, but overall the positive reviews outnumbered the negative, and my cyber-fame disappeared even faster than it had appeared. Except when Steph Gilmore is in the news, and some one has a couple of beers and remembers. ● noosatoday.com.au

Playing organised sports has a multitude of benefits for children and adolescents. Including enhanced co-ordination, selfesteem as well as fitness said Eumundi Dragons Club President Doug Toms. As a retired school teacher Doug, who has been a part of the small and mighty Eumundi based rugby club since 2008 said; “When you paid for your child to play Rugby at your local club you didn’t just pay for affiliation fees, (with the SCRU, QRU and ARU), a club strip or field equipment. Parents are really investing in their child’s future health and wellbeing. · You paid for your child to develop resilience - not to give up even when the going gets tough, both physically and mentally. · You paid for your child to develop strong friendships, some of which may last a lifetime · You paid for the chance to be taught by fantastic coaches who will teach your child that Rugby is not just about the skills of the game but also about the ups and downs of life. · You paid for your child to be disciplined, not just by the coaches but also by the match officials and the laws of the game as well. · You paid for your child to learn to take care of his/her body and to develop awareness that exercise is part of a healthy

The Roccocos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers are back at their Weyba Road headquarters this Saturday in what should be an intriguing contest against finals aspirant Mayne. The Noosa Tigers sit comfortably in second position on the Hart’s sports division one ladder with their Brisbane Tiger counterparts sitting fifth and starting to make some inroads on the 2018 competition. The Noosa boys have not been at home for close to a month and I’m sure will relish playing back in front of what will be a big home crowd -even more so as the Tigers celebrate their annual ladies day from 11.45am in the clubrooms. The girls will be entertained by a hypnotist which I’m sure will bring much laughter and enjoyment to a luncheon that is really gathering popularity on the calendar. Don't miss out with all booking information found on our website and on this page. A competition bye last weekend due to the representative game between North and South Queensland, where the South Qld boys took out the title by around three goals. Corey Boardman and Jayden Holt represented the victors and certainly made solid contributions to the victory and did the Noosa Tigers footy club proud. Well done boys! An interesting week selection wise for the Tigers with several key playmakers rested from the rep game due to niggling injuries. Great to see senior coach Sammy Faure back playing and kicking goals in his first game in three months and he will certainly be putting his hand up for senior selection in coming weeks. Don't be surprised also if Maccy Johnston and Tommy Maher from our Under 18s don’t come under selection consideration after constant consistent performances in the Colts. And speaking of our Colts a bit of a slipup last weekend with a pretty undisciplined showing against fellow finals aspirants Western Districts. Ex-Tiger president and multiple premiership winning player and coach across three states Benji Maher saying: "They were pretty bloody ordinary today the Colts. They got niggled and took the bait. To have four blokes sent off during one game just not good enough and they are old enough to know better. We are still a big chance to play finals but not with performances like that.". TOP SHOWJUMPERS WILL BE ON SHOW BY JOY RINGROSE Some of Australia's top show jumpers will be competing in the Sunshine Coast Showjumping Club's annual July Show, at the Nambour Showgrounds, from the 19th22nd of July. Entry is free for spectators. Over 300 horses and riders from all over Australia will be coming to Nambour for this event, which offers $24,000 on prize money. Competitions will be in both indoor and outdoor rings, with warm-up classes held on Thursday. On Friday evening the daring AM5 speed 1.45m one-round speed class will provide some great action. If there are equal penalties in the first round, a second speed round will determine the winner. On Sunday, throughout the day there will be three big money classes, starting at 8.00 am with the Future Stars class, for horses under 10 yrs old. Showjumping horses don't start serious competitions until they are at least 8 yrs old, and their bones can handle the impact of landing from height, so all of the top horses compete in Future Stars classes on their way up the showjumping ladder. At around midday the biggest class of the show, the Grand Prix, will see some of Australia's top World Cup competitors vying for $10,000 worth of prizes. Later in the afternoon there will be a Mini-Prix, for horses that are jumping at a top level, but that are not at their peak. Once again the Raymont Family, Paul, Sue and Jamie, are working frantically to make this a premier event on the Australian Showjumping Calendar. For further information, or late entries call Sue on 5447 6589, or 0400104099. â—?

STUNNING WEEKEND FOR FISHING SEES BIG 'UNS REELED IN With the weather almost perfect over the weekend families were out in force. Plenty of flathead continue to be caught with the better fish coming from the lower reaches of the river. Prawns, pilchard, whitebait and live baits like herring and poddy mullet have all claimed some good fish. For the lure angler soft plastics still seem to be the mainstay. Use at least 1/6 weighted jig head to make sure you are getting to the bottom. Quality bream and large whiting have also been in the lower reaches of the river, for the whiting worms and yabbies have been great and for the bream prawns, mullet gut and fowl gut have gotten the job done. For the lure anglers the whiting have been happy to take a surface lure, darker colours seeming to be more productive with the water a little coloured up from last weeks rain. Trevally and tailor are in great numbers and are feeding on the bait fish flushing down the river after the rain. Best to keep your activity to the lower parts of the river, fish Woods Bays, Munna Point, Munna Bridge or around the mouths. Fishing fast moving slugs and micro jigs has been popular around the mouth, while poppers have worked well in the lower reaches. Off the beaches; casting light slugs into the wash around the protected points of Noosa and off the beaches has been producing tailor and trevally. Plenty of good sized Flathead, Bream and Whiting are coming from the northern end of main beach. Up on the Noosa North Shore the fishing has been equally noosatoday.com.au

good with dart and whiting responding well to small baits including worm, prawn and squid. There are nice gutters North of Teewah so fishing whole pilchards, and mullet strip baits around the rips may see you tangle with a larger tailor or jew. For the rock hopper the consistent winds and swell have been great and made fishing the stones worthwhile, smaller snapper sweetlip and small tuna have all been taken from the Noosa North Shore, while Double Island has had the add bonus of the odd mackerel. Last weekend saw some great weather windows for the offshore crew with plenty of larger boats making their way to the Barwon Banks, Hards, and Double Island Reefs. Quality jewfish, pearl perch, tusk fish, cobia, cod and a few solid red emperor were all landed. Fishing live yakka and slimies produced some of the better results, Micro jigs and 7"and 9" soft plastics also claimed some great fish. On the closer reefs Sunshine, Masood's, and Halls reef all fished well. Snapper are really starting to come on now with plenty of quality fish taken, the key to snapper is as always a good burley trail. Sunshine has been the place to be if you are looking for some of those elusive trout. Fishing live baits hard to the reef with heavy leaders and tight drags has been the only way to get these delicious table fish from there rocky homes. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
