A man in his twenties was assaulted and died at the scene outside a milk bar in Doveton on Thursday evening, 19 July. Police and emergency services were called to Linden Place in Doveton just before 9.20pm. Investigators have been told the victim was allegedly involved in an altercation with a group of men before being “assaulted with an edged weapon.” The victim was treated by emergency services but died at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined; no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. SES crews were on scene during the morning of Friday 20 July, scouring the area for evidence. Sixteen-year-old Kara Lambert was inside the milk bar at the time the incident occurred when she saw three men “pushing and shoving.” “There were two Afghan guys arguing with someone,” she said. “They kept going at each other and one of them said ‘You watch dog.’” “Me being scared I ran but I didn’t hear anyone get stabbed. The milk bar guy, he saw the guy fall on the ground,” Kara said. Neighbour Penny, who asked not to reveal her surname, said she heard yelling from her home across the road. “We heard them yelling and automatically looked out the window,” she said, before seeing the group “take off.” “It’s very sad - it somebody’s son, in a split second your life can change.” Penny added “enough is enough,” saying the area has attracted anti-social behaviour in recent times and sees fights “all the time.” “It never used to be this bad, it used to be a friendly shopping strip, she said. “My window got smashed not so long ago and I had a breakin.“ She said she also had to put down her 15 month-old dog not long ago “because someone was throwing rocks at it.” “You’re not safe in your home. It makes you think what society has come to.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

NEWS

IN BRIEF

Shot fired: no bail A Dandenong North bottle-shop owner has allegedly struggled to ward off two would-be intruders armed with a hammer and a knife who have yelled they would kill him, a court has heard. At a bail hearing on 16 July, one of the accused Kayne Johns, 19, was also alleged to have driven off from an attempted police intercept in Dandenong in which police fired a gun. Johns faced charges including car theft, shop theft, assault, criminal damage, breaching bail, failing to stop a vehicle on police direction and dangerous driving. Johns had earlier tried to steal a slab of Johnny Walker cans from the bottle-shop about 4.10pm on 6 June, according to a police summary tendered to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. During a struggle, the owner allegedly took hold of Johns’s Gucci bag, which contained Johns’s phone and ID. Johns ran out of the store while his co-accused allegedly fled with a 10-pack of Woodstock Bourbon. Ten minutes later, the pair returned to retrieve the bag. Johns was armed with a hammer and the co-accused with a knife, police claimed.

Johns allegedly head-butted a pharmacy owner, who was standing in the bottle-shop doorway. The bottle shop owner struggled to shut and lock the front door of the shop, while the two accused males kicked, punched and used their weapons to try to get in, police submitted. The pair allegedly yelled that they would kill the owner. As they pushed the door slightly open, the owner swung a metal pole through the gap and struck Johns in the forehead. The owner then managed to get the door locked and closed. The co-accused and an unknown male who helped them try to break in then fled in a stolen Pulsar. Police asserted that Johns had drunk a “large amount of alcohol” before the incident. Two hours later, Johns was accused of attempting to steal a car parked at Quest Apartments, Dandenong. About 7.40pm, police attempted to intercept him by driving in front of the Pulsar while stopped at Comfort Inn, Dandenong. A police officer produced their gun and ordered Johns to get out of the car. Johns allegedly started the car with scissors and reversed quickly, crashing into a parked

vehicle that in turn struck another car parked behind. He drove away as the officer fired their weapon, police claimed. “By his own admissions (Johns was) drunk at the time of driving and subsequently avoiding police interception, placing police members in fear and danger resulting in them firing their firearm,” the police summary stated. Johns allegedly told police he was not trying to run over the officers, the court was told. At the hearing, he also faced family violence charges, including threats with a knife and a screwdriver in February. Six family members were protected by intervention orders, the court heard. His defence lawyer told the court that Johns was having a “very difficult time” while in adult remand. He was not getting required mentalhealth drugs and had been recently hurt by an inmate. “He has seen what other people are like (in adult custody) and he doesn’t want to end up like them.” The lawyer stressed that Johns’s rehabilitation had to be a focus due to his young age coupled with meth, Xanax and cannabis abuse and mental health issues. He was remanded in custody to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 July.

Dandy launches towards the final frontier By Cam Lucadou-Wells The sky is the limit for Dandenong, which has leapt to the forefront of Australia’s space technology program. DefendTex, which is based in Dandenong, will lead the Responsive Access to Space program into developing a revolutionary engine that could lead to satellites being launched in Australia. On 20 July, the Federal Government announced $3 million over three years for the program, which has attracted $10 million in cash and in-kind contributions from universities and industries. The Rotating Detonation Engine, if it can be made flight-ready, could lead to Australia being a space-launch destination for the rest of the world, DefendTex chief executive Travis Reddy said. The aim is to create a rocket engine that is propelled by explosion rather than standard combustion. The result is extraordinary heat generated at lift-off, which would ordinarily melt the engine and cause system failure. The RDE would aim to use new thermal management and inlet, injection and fuel mixing controls to dissipate the heat. It would be a lighter-weight, lower-cost engine with fewer moving parts, Mr Reddy said. Suddenly, Australia with its wide-open spaces could be sought to launch satellites and “payloads” from across the world.

Assistant Science Minister Zed Seselja and Senator Mitch Fifield with DefendTex CEO Travis Reddy (centre). 183156 “We’d be looking to export the service but not the location.” It could leap from being a minor player in the $480 billion worldwide space industry, and be better placed to keep its expertise within its borders, Mr Reddy said. RMIT University, University of Sydney, University of South Australia, Universitat de Bundeswehr, Defence Science and Technology Group and Innosync Pty Ltd are also involved

in the research collaboration. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance executive director Adrian Boden said space research was an “exciting” boost to the region’s thriving manufacturing hub. He said the next challenge was to ensure there were enough highly-skilled workers. “There isn’t a hole in manufacting, we’re struggling to find enough people to work in it.”

Gang talk is ‘hurting’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Young African-Australians feel like they are being portrayed as criminals as a hot political debate has raged on 'African youth gangs'. One of the flashpoints was a State Liberal political pamphlet handed out at Noble Park railway station on 12 July, declaring it would stop "gangs hunting in packs". Gatluak Puoch, of the Nuer Youth Association of Australia, said the pamphlet - and the raging political debate - was slandering African-Australian youths in general. "It hurts - it really hurts people. There are a lot of people who are contributing positively to society. "They are working and contributing to the greater good of Australia. "When people see African Australians, they will automatically think of them as criminal." It made landing jobs more difficult and the drying up of opportunities, Mr Puoch said. Youth issues in general, not just African youth disenfranchisement had to be dealt with; the individual offenders had to be dealt with, not an entire community, he said. "The majority of the youth are born here - so why is the government labelling them as African? "It's widening the gap between Australia and the community." Noble Park resident Hamed Bah told the Journal that the "gangs" talk was a misinterpretation of how African immigrants try to fit in. "Most likely, Africans are always together doing whatsoever in numbers ... it makes us feel at home for most of the time. Ask any youth - they will say so." Mr Bah said political commentary loaded "lots of negativity" on young people. He says "Australians don't know Africans that well, which makes everything so escalating". "It's shameful the way that the media carries on about it like it is a war. Remember we came from the wars, we came across seeking help but we feel as if the Government is too silent in tackling the problem." State opposition immigration spokeswoman Inga Peulich said it was an "indisputable fact ... we have a law and order crisis including with violent youth gangs". "The problem of youth gang violence impacts on everyone in our communities, especially the victims. "That's why Daniel Andrews' soft touch and mismanagement of law and order has been such a disaster for all Victorians who want safe and harmonious communities." In response to the pamphlet, Ms Peulich took aim at the response of Keysborough MP Martin Pakula, who tweeted it was "disgraceful behaviour". "I was a bit shocked at the local MP, Martin

DANDENONG SOUTH

Hamed Bah says African youth feel misunderstood by other Australians. Pakula's reaction given he doesn't even live in the seat he's supposed to represent. "If he did live in the area he would know that in Noble Park alone, there has been a 19 per cent increase in crime comparing Dec 2014 and March 2018 quarters." Crime in Noble Park has however dropped by 6 per cent in the past 12 months, though crimes against the person have risen marginally. Ms Peulich said she had collabatorated with African communities to develop a strategy and action plan. It had taken Labor three years to recently release its own $8.6 million, 10-year strategy. "The Premier and his Ministers should have been working harder throughout the term to help address the challenges identified by many African community leaders." South-East Metropolitan Greens MP Nina Springle said she had been disappointed by some politicians' "inflammatory language" but the pamphlet was "another level". "It was bad enough to continue to push the 'gang' rhetoric, but to describe people as hunting in packs makes them sound more animal than human. "I'm not sure how anyone could put their name to that type of material." Multicultural Minister Robin Scott didn't respond by deadline.

LOOKING BACK

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 25 July 1918 Dandenong water supply It is hardly conceivable that a public meeting (which was properly advertised) to discuss the important question of the local water supply, should be attended by only 13 ratepayers! However regrettable it may seem (and it certainly is regrettable), such was the case on Tuesday evening at the Town Hall; when Mr Sambell, chief executive of the Dandenong Waterworks Trust, attended at the suggestion of the Ratepayers Association in order to fully explain matters in regard to the present water supply of the town. Mr Sambell gave a most interesting address, and quoted extensively from his report on the proposed scheme for improving the supply, and whilst he presented a good case it must have been disappointing to him and the Dandenong Waterworks Trust commissioners

to find only 13 of the ratepayers were sufficiently interested in the question to attend.

50 years ago 23 July 1968 Death at 60 of Mr Ted Swords Dandenong leading businessman and community leader Mr Edwin Augustus (Ted) Swords died in Prince Henry's Hospital last Friday. He was aged 60. The founder of Dandenong First Scout group, Mr Swords conducted the Advertiser Printing in Walker Street, Dandenong, with his brother Henry. The Swords family previously published Dandenong's first newspaper, the Advertiser, which ceased in 1959. The funeral yesterday was one of the biggest ever in Dandenong with relatives, friends, business associates and community leaders paying their last respects. The Mayor, Cr Peter Wagstaff, who is a lead-

er in the scouting movement, attended in full scout uniform. He was accompanied by the District Commissioner and Group Scoutmaster of First Dandenong, Mr Tim Holt. The First Armytage Own Group Flag was draped over the casket. Ted Swords was slight of frame, quiet and unassuming, but he hid behind a comparatively gentle exterior a dynamic strength to cope adequately with a dozen different important matters simultaneously.

Det Sgt Peter Stirling Springvale CIB said the drug in its purest form could have been used to make more than 60 drug deals. "The heroin had been cut from a block and was still in its pure form." The find was proof of the continuing success of Operation Belgrade, a drug crackdown program currently running in Springvale.

Chain reaction pile-up

27 July 1998 $20,000 heroin haul by police Springvale detectives seized 283 grams of heroin believed to have a street value of $20,000. A search of a car in Springvale's central business district on 17 July found that the narcotic had been hidden in a door panel.

Drivers distracted by an accident on the Monash Freeway caused 11 more crashes over a four kilometre stretch. Police said there were a dozen accidents city-bound on the freeway between Hallam and Clyde roads between 7pm and 8.30pm on Saturday 6 July, including eight that resulted in injuries.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL kitchens, talking food with an international cast of 1500 crew members on each ship. The highlight was when each crew member would request their country's food on their national day, Mr Kestwal said. Opening last October, SWAT75 represents the pair docking in Melbourne, settling down with family and realising their dream for their own local business. "We saw a lot of potential here in Dandenong," Mr Mudigonda said.

There's a ring of mystery behind the name of a lively new Dandenong diner SWAT75. We can tell you that SWAT stands for Steaks, Wings and Tortillas - and we should add these are high-quality meats with a healthy amount of Central American zing and spices. And 75 - well it's the last two numbers of Dandenong's postcode. Just in case you forget where you are, sitting back in the modern, classy interior lit up by New Orleans' streetscapes. It's also the year of birth for owners Ajay Kestwal and Mallik Mudigonda, who conjure up flavours of Mexico, southern USA and the Caribbean that are unique to Dandenong's foodie scene. The two chefs' crafted their menu ideas while working in Caribbean cruise ships'

bean Jerk. The meat melts as the sauce sings in one's mouth. For those who fancy a nuclear-level of heat, order a plate of beef ribs dressed in the flaming-orange Buffalo sauce. As a point of difference, there's the wholesome 'superfood' burritos. We were well sated by a wrap of fajitaspiced chicken crammed within quinoa, avocado, corn, sweet potato, roast pepper and three cheeses. The eatery's generous, soft steaks are freshly sourced from a Dandenong butcher. We demolished a thick, tender porterhouse with a light chimichurri sauce - which is, herbs bathed in a high-quality oil. SWAT 75 is open at Level 1, Shop 104B, Dandenong Plaza on Mondays-Saturdays 8am-late and Sundays 9am-5pm. Details: 8774 3878 and swat75.com.au

March into a Drum By Cam Lucadou-Wells Behind the head-turning architecture, the Drum Theatre and Dandenong's former town hall have been the stage of a long-running feud. The century-plus conflict between Dandenong Shire Council and Mechanics Institute will be revealed during an Open House Melbourne tour on Sunday, 29 July. Not to mention the proverbial back stage visitors' pass, as well as access to the historic stairwell, passages and meeting rooms. Drum Theatre co-ordinator Cheryl Rush will present the tour, as well as historian Chris Keys. Ms Rush said up until recently the feud was very much alive even as late as 2006 - with some Mechanics members opposing plans for the Drum Theatre. Before the town hall was built, the Mechanics resided in a small weatherboard building on the site from 1862. The council rented offices in the building, but soon outgrew its quarters. It proposed to house the Mechanics in an improved public building elsewhere in exchange for the council taking ownership of the site. Despite some fierce opposition in its ranks, the Mechanics voted in favour of the plan. And by 1890, the grand town hall was built and opened to the public. Ms Rush said the original council chambers was located in the present-day bar area. The original wooden floorboards and windows still remain. Nearby was the original care-taker's inhouse 'apartment' where he lived with his wife and children. Other details to spot include the former magistrates' room, original marble fireplaces and delicate ceiling roses.

Talking our way to safety Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea and Cheryl Rush in the first-floor atrium. 182868 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS The tower's clock wasn't installed until 1934. It's reported that when it opened, it wouldn't stop striking, but continued 117 times. The hall underwent major renovations in the 1940s. It was the place to go for popular ballroom dances on Saturday nights, and was filled by concerts in the 1960s featuring acts such as local boy John Farnham. The most astonishing facelift of all arrived in 2006 with the construction of Drum Theatre. The sweeping red curves of the modern Drum was daringly wed to the formal, upright lines of the old Town Hall. The creation won a host of design awards such as from the Master Builders Association and the Australian Property Institute. In with the new was also a chance to restore

the old - such as the original wooden staircase, the original interior paint schemes and the original windows. Ms Rush says the façade's spectacular multi-coloured light show has helped soften the imposing hall's exterior. "It's designed to look accessible, friendly and to welcome people in." As part of Open House Melbourne, Dandenong's oldest building St James Anglican Church, the Heritage Hill properties and the civic centre and library will also be opened. The free event is on 28 and 29 July - though note St James Church opens only on 28 July and Drum Theatre only on 29 July. Details: greaterdandenong.com/openhouse or 8571 1000.

Greater Dandenong police are seeking your views on community safety. For two months, Victoria Police will gather public feedback in Community Safety Networks activities around the municipality. Officers will be out and about at railway stations, community forums, festivals and markets to get feedback from residents, business owners and commuters. "It's an opportunity for the community to have a say on the key issues within Greater Dandenong," Acting Inspector Tim Hardiman, of Greater Dandenong police, said. "We know that people have great insight into their local community and ideas about other ways to prevent crime. "Issues identified will inform the development of projects and initiatives to help improve community safety." The Community Safety Networks project is a partnership between Victoria Police, the State Government, Crime Stoppers Victoria and Neighbourhood Watch. Activities kick off on 23 July. The safety conversation is also online at Engage Victoria's website, https://engage.vic.gov. au/dandenongcommunitysafety

More works still needed Other requests were a signalised pedestrian crossing at Heatherton Road and Mons Parade, and the extension of a Caulfield-Yarraman shared-user path to Dandenong station. The LXRA has completed the signalised pedestrian crossing, and an upgraded - though not multi-deck - car park with an extra 145 spaces at Sandown Park has been announced. It is set to build a north-south link road under the rail line between Ian and Leonard streets. There are no plans to build the other requested items, the authority stated. By Cam Lucadou-Wells There are no plans to enact key items of Greater Dandenong Council's wishlist for further infrastructure in Noble Park, according to the Level Crossing Removal Authority. Last year, the council lobbied the State Government for a suite of projects as part of the skyrail, otherwise known as elevated rail, project. The items included a multi-deck car park at Sandown Park railway station and traffic signals at the roundabout at Heatherton Road, Lightwood Road and Douglas Street, Noble Park.

landscaped station precinct that's not only great for train travellers but for locals who'll soon be able to move freely between shops, services and homes on either side of the rail line," project director Brett Summers said. "We're taking this opportunity to not only remove level crossings but to make Noble Park a better place to live." Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan requested an update from the council at a meeting on 9 July. Residents were asking particularly about the multi-deck car park and roundabout traffic sig-

nals given the extra traffic expected to use the roads after the level crossings' removal, he said. The lack of a cycling path link to Dandenong station was a "very obvious gap" in the local bike network, he said. Acting engineering services director Craig Cinquegrana said VicRoads had agreed that signalisation was warranted at the roundabout intersection within 10 years, but not as part of the LXRA project. The cycle link to Dandenong station remained a "prioritised" lobbying item for the council, Mr Cinquegrana said.

Snowfields in Springvale by the tonne - it’s the real deal By Cam Lucadou-Wells Real snow - trucked in from the ski-fields - is set to fall again on Springvale's streets. More than 80,000 kilograms of the white stuff from Mt Buller will land at the sixth annual Springvale Snow Fest on 29 July. As well as snow play areas, the street festival will be abuzz with husky dogs, ice sculpting, live performances, food stalls, a silent igloo disco and roving entertainers. It is expected to attract a crowd of more than 40,000 through the day - capped with a fireworks finale. Special guests this year are Olympian alpine skier Emily Bamford - who made her Games debut at Sochi in 2014 - and The Voice 2016 runner-up Adam Ladell. Ladell will perform with Emerson School students on the main stage at 12.45pm. Given the expected crowds, visitors are advised to consider public transport. Roads will be closed at Windsor, Buckingham and Balmoral avenues. Details: greaterdandenong.com/snowfest

Industrial safety gear ATOM's Industrial and Safety Walkthrough Warehouse has just landed in Dandenong to provide locals with everything they need to get the job done without the retail price tag. ATOM has got it all covered. With everything from work wear, safety gear, welding equipment, power tools, hand tools, cutting and abrasives, general hardware, lubrication equipment and more, whatever the locals need - they can get it at ATOM. ATOM's Industrial and Safety Walkthrough Warehouse means customers can browse the range of products up close. ATOM are encouraging their customers to stop paying retail prices by offering warehouse prices on all of the big brands like Bisley, Steel Blue, Pferd, Hitachi, CRC, Loctite and their attractive buy bulk and save products. Adam Fisher, ATOM Dandenong's branch manager, is proud of ATOM's unique warehouse model. "We are all very proud to be the newest addition to ATOM's national network," Mr Fisher said. "Having worked in the industrial supply industry in this area for almost 20 years, it really is a breath of fresh air to have ATOM's new concept Industrial and Safety Walkthrough Warehouse to support the local industry with stock on hand." ATOM Dandenong is the team behind the teams driving industry in Australia. By creating a team full of 'local ordinary Australians,' ATOM believes that locals serve locals best they're nearby, they're part of the community, they're more accountable, and they're contactable. "We are continuing to build our local team with a real focus on experience in the industrial and safety space," Mr Fisher said. "I encourage people to come and have a complimentary coffee while exploring the Walkthrough Warehouse. As well as a large

Le Pine Funerals will be conducting a Loss and Grief seminar in Dandenong on Tuesday 24 July.

Loss and grief education

Adam Fisher, ATOM Dandenong s branch manager, is proud of ATOM s unique warehouse model. range of products, we have numerous inventory management and online sourcing solutions on offer. We are more than happy to organise on-site demonstrations of our inventory management solutions, including our industrial vending machines and Kanban process." Check out the new Industrial and Safety Walkthrough Warehouse at 213 Greens Rd in Dandenong South.

Doris Zagdanski is Australia's foremost grief educator and author and has 30 years' experience working with people who are grieving. She will be presenting a special 'Loss and Grief - Stuck for Words' seminar at the Le Pine Funerals and White Lady Funerals Chapel in Dandenong on Tuesday 24 July. "Doris is an engaging, straight-talking speaker who communicates in plain English about a subject most of us do not want to discuss," Le Pine Area Manager Tia Worrall said. "She blends humour, real-life stories, and common sense tips. The Loss and Grief seminar is a great opportunity to learn her secret to saying the right things to someone who is sad, hurt, lonely, overwhelmed, and grieving. It's difficult to know what to say and all we know is we want to make a difference at such a difficult time." Mrs Worrall explained that making a difference is all about understanding what to say and how to say it. The Loss and Grief seminar will include tips for accurate empathy, how to bring up the subject of their loss, grief cliches and how to avoid them, learning what grieving people need and words and actions that help and hinder. "There are many reasons why we grieve at

different stages of our lives, and put simply, grief is our response to the impact of a loss in our life," Mrs Worrall said. "We grieve because we have loved. We grieve because something significant in our life has been taken from us. We grieve because someone that we were attached to is gone. We grieve because unwelcome changes have disrupted our life. We grieve because our hopes, plans and dreams have not worked out. "Helping grieving people is not about finding ways to take their grief away. It's about the power of listening and knowing what not to say as much as what to say." The Loss and Grief seminar is ideal for those who work in health, counselling, peer support, emergency services, volunteering, aged care, education or wherever individuals may meet grieving people. The seminar will be held from 8.45am for a 9am start (12pm finish) at Le Pine and White Lady Chapel, 137 Princes Highway in Dandenong. To RSVP, contact Cheryl Good at cheryl. good@lepinefunerals.com.au by Thursday 19 July. Bookings are essential and include free admission, light refreshments and a takehome fact sheet.

Non-recyclables pile up By Brendan Rees Casey Council is reminding residents not to put the wrong items into their home recycling bins after a glut of non-recyclables were discovered at a Hallam site. In a recent trip to a recycling facility in Hallam, council officers found a number of items such bedding, tyres, hoses and more among a mountain of recyclables - which had come from residential bins. Casey Council posted photos of the hard

rubbish they had spotted onto their Facebook page on 20 June saying it would “cause issues for the recycling process.” “We ask you not to put: bedding, garden waste, polystyrene and foam, netting bags, or any plastic bags for that matter into your blue bin,” the post said. “Other definite no’s are: tyres, hoses, furniture, material bags, soft toys, mattresses, helmets or material items,“ it added.Waste and Landfill Management manager Michael Jansen said “This is an ongoing issue and we

continue to encourage and work with our residents around what goes in each bin.“ Mr Jansen said council undertook many initiatives to educate and work with residents on recycling. This included education sessions with schools, groups and the community, via letters, brochures and articles, the annual Recycling and Waste Guide, through Council’s social media channels, and the Green Events Calendar.

Tyres and hoses were some of the nonrecyclable items found by Casey Council.

Super seven for Stingrays By Hayley Wildes

Dandenong’s Jai Taylor leaves his Bendigo opponent in the dust. 183170 kicking from the Rays saved the Pioneers from what should’ve an even larger loss than the final margin of 66 points. The highlight of the quarter, and maybe even the game, was Campbell Hustwaite’s incredible running goal from the boundary. Having roved the pack beautifully, he burned his opponents and slotted a

beauty from 45 metres out on the boundary. It was the cherry on top of a fine performance from the skipper, whose tireless work around the contest powered many forays forward. Zac Foot’s tremendous game was highlighted by a screamer late in the final quarter and he finished with three majors. The Rays’ cleaner ball

Robertson stars with a 15-goal haul By Hayley Wildes In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Russell Robertson put on one hell of a show for the Doveton Eagles as the retired AFL star proved he’s still got it with 15 goals against a hapless Caulfield. With the former high-flying Melbourne forward’s signature class and goal-sense, Caulfield’s defence couldn’t keep up as he slotted them from everywhere at Power Reserve. The Eagles ran out 24.24 (168) to 5.5 (35) winners as Nick Battle and Darryl Thomas were also sublime. At Keysborough Reserve, the Burras took control of the game after quarter time to claim an important 14.12 (96) to 8.3 (51) win over Skye. Chris Bryan was dominant up forward with six majors, while Ryan Goodes and Tim Werner worked tirelessly all day. In Division 3, Endeavour Hills was far too strong for South Yarra, dominating from start

to finish to win 19.22 (136) to 3.5 (23) on the road. Tom Gillies and Sam McLean combined for eight goals, while Jayson Bruce and Daniel Soar were pivotal in powering the Falcons to the big win. Hallam fell behind early against Black Rock at home and never recovered, losing 13.12 (90) to 10.6 (66). Still winless, the Hawks battled hard but the class of Black Rock was too much to overcome. Rory McIvor and Joel Danilo were impressive for the Hawks, while Tom Bradley booted three goals. Heatherton fell in a heart-stopper against Ashwood at Essex Heights Reserve. Trailing all day, Heatherton dug deep in a valiant fourth quarter effort to nearly pull off the impossible. A 23-point three quarter time deficit proved too much for Heatherton though, as Ashwood held on for a 16.12 (108) to 15.13 (103) win in dramatic fashion. Callum Cusack and Reagan Maddaford were superb for Heatherton. Meanwhile In Division 4, Lyndale was never

use and the way in which they hunt the footy was just too much for the Pioneers as they ran out 15.21 (111) to 7.3 (45) winners. It was a clinical performance - minus the goal kicking from the top of the table Rays. Dandenong next takes on the Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena on Sunday (29 July).

up for the fight against Frankston. The Pumas fell behind early and the Dolphins punished them to run out 8.20 (68) to 3.4 (22) winners. Kane Denmead and Sukhwinder Singh were impressive for the Pumas. Dandenong was ripped apart by Carrum Patterson Lakes at home. A six-goal to one opening term set the wheels in motion as Carrum Patterson Lakes ran out 21.21 (147) to 2.7 (19) winners. Jayke Brown and Jayke Hopkins were valiant for the Redlegs. Lyndhurst struggled to put a score on the board against Cerberus, falling 15.10 (100) to 3.6 (24) on the road. Jamie Gaspero and Jarryd McGrath were shining lights for the Lightning. Finally, Sandown was unable to keep up with Moorabbin in the second half as the Kangaroos claimed a 12.15 (87) to 8.13 (61) win. Nicholas Morrish and Brendan Robinson were two of Sandown’s best.

The Dandenong Stingrays took on the bottomplaced Bendigo Pioneers at Shepley Oval on Saturday afternoon and their dominant TAC Cup season continued, claiming their seventh win on the trot. The signs were ominous early as Dandenong piled on nine scoring shots to one in the opening term. If not for their wayward kicking in front of goal, the Stingrays’ 23-point quarter time lead could’ve been much larger. From the outset, the likes of captain Campbell Hustwaite, Sam Fletcher and Will Hammill were dominating their opponents through the middle of the ground. Bailey Williams was looking dangerous around the ground - both when drifting forward and handling ruck duties, and his aerial work was a class above. The second quarter was more of the same as Dandenong extended its lead to 8.10 (58) to 1.1 (7) at half time. A whopping 18 scoring shots to two tells the story of just how dominant the Rays were and with a great set-up behind the ball, Bendigo simply couldn’t find a way through Dandenong’s wall. Jake Frawley’s work up forward was sublime, as was Bailey Williams’, who showcased his scarily-good agility with a snap goal after roving the pack in the goal square. All that was stopping Williams from completely dominating the game was his goal kicking. Jamie Plumridge added to Bendigo’s pain with his first major of the day just 50 seconds into the third quarter. But to the Pioneers’ credit, they responded with two classy goals in two minutes to put some respectability on the scoreboard. In an even quarter, both teams booted four majors. In the fourth quarter, Dandenong continued to dominate play, but more wayward

Jerome’s golden journey By Hayley Wildes When Noble Park local Jerome Pierre found out in March that he would be representing Victoria Metro on the national stage, he was excited, proud and just a little bit shocked. He was excited for the opportunity to showcase his game at the Basketball Australia under-16 Junior Championships, proud to be pulling on the big V jersey and he was shocked because, in reality, 14-year-olds aren't meant to be making under-16 national championship squads. What makes Jerome's journey even more incredible is the fact that the 196cm centre only began playing basketball in 2016. "I was very proud and also shocked [to make the team], because it doesn't really happen for 14-year-olds," Jerome said. But that shock quickly wore off and when the championships tipped off earlier this month on the Sunshine Coast, Jerome was ready. As Vic Metro's starting centre, Jerome was sublime against South Australia, finishing with an impressive double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Vic Metro claimed the win, 76-47 and would go through the tournament undefeated. In the grand final, Vic Metro took on Vic Country in what was a titanic struggle. Vic Country led by five points at half time, before scores were tied at 54-all heading into the final quarter. In a dominant fourth quarter effort, Vic Metro turned the screws on defence and held their rivals to just 10 points to claim the championship, 74-64.

Jerome Pierre won gold with Vic Metro at the under-16 Australian Basketball Championships. Picture: COURTESY OF BASKETBALL VICTORIA Speaking about the grand final, Jerome and his teammates never lost faith. "I never had any doubts with our team. I

knew we could come back," he said. "We all put a lot of work into it, so we were determined to win it."

Jerome more than proved himself against his older opponents and led his gold medalwinning team in rebounds (7.43), as well as putting up eight points per game too. Having taken up the game only recently, Jerome credits Dandenong Basketball - and his parents - for helping fast track his development. "Dandenong has helped develop me, they've supported me and all the coaches are very helpful," he said. As a centre, Jerome prides himself on rebounding. "I really try to grab every rebound. That's just my mindset; grab every rebound possible," he said. While rebounding is one of his focuses, Jerome also spoke about the need to control his emotions on the court. This is something that he has been working on tirelessly and by studying the game of a college basketball star, he has seen improvements. "Jericho Sims, who plays for the Texas Longhorns in college basketball - he's not a professional player yet - but I really look up to him," he said. "I like how he's very relaxed and doesn't get frustrated. I've had a history of getting angry in games and I really try to be like him out on the court." Jerome Pierre possesses the height, skill and understanding to take his game to the next level. At just 14 years of age, and with a national championship to his name, this is just the beginning for the kid from Noble Park.

Local clubs get behind it By Nick Creely The bid to bring an A-League and W-League club to the south-east of Victoria has received the overwhelming backing of many local Casey, Cardinia and City of Greater Dandenong clubs. In total, 43 clubs from all different regions in the south-east have provided letters of support to Team 11's bid, which was conveyed to Football Federation Australia and Deloitte as part of the bid team's Expression of Interest (EOI) submission. Of the 43 clubs, 21 of those fall within the local region of Casey, Cardinia and City of Greater Dandenong, with larger clubs such as Berwick City, Dandenong Thunder and Pakenham United all getting behind the bid. Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley said the bid would work with these clubs - and as many others as possible in southeast Victoria - in the coming months to establish what a formal working relationship would look like if and when the A-League push is successful. "This club will be nothing without the backing of the local football community," Windley said. "The support received thus far has been incredible and we can't thank enough the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run these clubs to help Team 11's bid. "We would love to have working relationships with all clubs in the south-east of Vic-

toria. "This is a club that has to be of benefit to its local football community. It goes beyond simply playing A-League and W-League matches locally, it has to be a genuine positive presence in the community and provide a genuine professional pathway for our young boys and girls. "These letters of support are an indication from our community that we are building this bid in the right way thus far." The clubs that have provided letters of support so far are: Afghan Victory, Aspendale, Berwick Churches, Berwick City, Bunyip and District Strikers, Casey Comets, Casey Panthers, Chelsea, Dandenong City, Dandenong South, Dandenong Thunder, Doveton, Endeavour Hills Fire, Endeavour Sporting Club, Endeavour United, Gippsland FC, Hampton Park Sparrows, Inverloch Stars, James Cook FC, Keysborough, Knox Churches, Korumburra City, Langwarrin, Mazenod Victory, Mornington, Mount Martha, Newborough-Yallourn, Old Mentonians, Pakenham United, Peninsula Strikers Junior FC, Peninsula Strikers Senior FC, Sandown Lions, Skye United, South Springvale, Southern United, Springvale City, Springvale White Eagles, Trafalgar Victory, Traralgon City, Warragul United, Westernport, White Star Dandenong, and Wonthaggi United.

The Dandenong Thunder is one of many local clubs in the region to get behind Team 11. 177940

Super Slam to kick off in exciting new Twenty20 comp By Nick Creely All 18 Victorian Premier Cricket clubs are officially locked in to a new and exciting Twenty20 competition, with the first ever Super Slam to kick off this season. A new concept by Cricket Victoria, the aim is to split the 18 teams into two conferences named after BBL clubs Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, and will be a standalone competition aimed at developing potential Big Bash players. Each team has the potential to sign an interstate and overseas BBL player, with the winner of the Super Slam to go to a Cricket Australia Twenty20 carnival to compete with the 26 STAR JOURNAL

winners of other Premier Twenty20 title winners across each state. Local clubs Casey-South Melbourne and Dandenong will form part of the Melbourne Stars conference, joining Fitzroy-Doncaster, Kingston Hawthorn, Camberwell Magpies, Ringwood, Frankston-Peninsula, Monash Tigers and Northcote. In the Melbourne Renegades conference, Greenvale, Melbourne, St Kilda, Prahran, Essendon, Geelong, Footscray, Melbourne Uni and Carlton will compete against each other. The games will mostly be played mid-week, which will allow a clearer focus on developing a high performance pathway to Twenty20 cricket, and also allow more two-day cricket to

be played in the regular season. "Without out a doubt, it's a new way of thinking from Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria, - it's now a pathway for players from every state to show their skills, and maybe get a contract with one of the (BBL) franchises," Casey-South Melbourne president Ross Hibbins said of the new Twenty20 competition. "It creates a link between Premier Cricket and higher level cricket in the Twenty20 scene, and it's well overdue." Hibbins believes the Swans will benefit from more exposure to the Twenty20 format, and hopes to unearth plenty of talent. "There is a real incentive to now find the best players in the region, and specialise in

Twenty20, and have a real go at trying to not only win the Stars Conference, but to also try and get to National," he said. In other news across Victorian Premier Cricket, Casey-South Melbourne has brought in two quality additions into their squad, with Dandenong's Ryan Quirk and Narre North Turf 2 premiership star Josh Dowling signing on at Casey Fields. Quirk won the Premier second XI player of the year award after compiling 716 runs and next year will be looking for an opportunity at a higher level, while pace bowler Dowling returns to the Premier fold after also playing a first XI game with Dandenong a few years ago. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
