THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

FESTIVAL LAUNCH BANG ON It was 10 minutes of explosive visual effects involving 10,000 fireworks which totally captivated thousands of guests who had headed down to Gympie Terrace on Saturday night to enjoy one of the Noosa Alive festival's opening events. The 91.1Hot Fire in the Sky firework held in awe a crowd which filled Lions Park at Noosaville and no one was disappointed with the show. The fireworks was the grand finale of an afternoon of entertainment and stalls delivered free to the community. Noosa Alive will continue to showcase an array of music, theatre, entertainment and art as it continues until Sunday. Also free to the community is the Spanish Quarter which will operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday and has returned following its popularity last year. The street market set up in the Maze car park, next to Rococo Noosa will bring together culinary delights, music and street performers. THIEF TAKES AWAY KEVIN’S HEARING IN LATEST ROBBERY Noosaville resident Kevin Lomas has been robbed three times from his riverside apartment but in the latest theft last Wednesday night he lost something of no use to anyone else but vital to his normal life - his hearing aids. Kevin, who shares the unit with another man, said he had gone to bed about 11.30pm and his flatmate had been out so when he heard the back door open and close he naturally assumed he had returned home. It wasn't until the morning when both

on to the river and a public footpath. Kevin said the unit had been broken into twice and an iPad was taken from an outside table on another occasion. "They took my car out of the garage. The keys were stolen from the server," he said. "They took my scooter. I found it at the Yacht Club with the keys in it. "It's awful. It makes you feel uneasy. I can't stand being there at the moment." Kevin said the brown leather satchel that was stolen last week contained little of value to anyone else. He said there was a wallet with about $50 in it and a pair of glasses but the loss of his hearing aids worth about

$12,000 had a large impact on his life. As part of a Diploma of Community Service he this week began a voluntary placement in a residential establishment housing people with mental challenges. "I'm working with people," he said. "It's vital I hear what they say and write it down." Kevin said fortunately he had insurance and has been able to borrow some substitute hearing aids but would love to have his returned. Anyone finding the hearing aids should contact Noosa police. ●

COVER STORY Creating a board like this with your own hands is therapeutic and real sense of achievement.

MINDFUL WORK BY HOLLIE HARRIS

S

urfboard craftsman Greg Facer has a vision. To step back in time, when surfboards were built from timber by hand and take with him those who need help through tough times. In his shaping bay at Doonan, Greg has created a space to share his knowledge with ocean-lovers who are struggling with anxiety or depression, and the end result? "A very therapeutic process and without exception, the people I have worked with have all come out the other end of the workshop feeling more relaxed, less stressed and with a feeling of achievement," Greg says. Oh, and an incredible feeling when you paddle out on a beautiful wooden surfboard that you've crafted with your own hands. Shaping this way is actually practicing mindfulness, which in its simplest form, means awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness been proven to reduce stress and anxiety and conflict and increase resilience and emotional intelligence. Taking the time to craft something by hand

is an effective form of this practice. Greg's 40 year surfing journey, lead him to start Bare Naked Boards 5 years ago, after taking a workshop with his young son Max as a bonding exercise. "It turns out that creating something special with another person gives you a really unique bond. It was a natural progression to set up a workshop to enable me to share the experience with others," he says. As a society, we have lost the art of creativity in every-day life and having a product at the end of a days' work is a huge bonus. "You just can't beat the feeling of catching that first wave on a board you have crafted with your own hands." Throughout a number of workshops in Sydney, Greg noticed a lot of guys had been suffering badly from mental health issues - depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts. "One of the guys returned after our workshop to let me know how much his headspace had turned around since making his board with me. He still reckons that

every day he looks at his board and has a sense of achievement that carries him through that day," Greg says. Greg offers people an opportunity to disconnect from technology and chat in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Being hands on with the tools creates a nonconfronting space to chat or just to remain present in the silence. He has recognised that the process can have a huge benefit to mental wellbeing. "I have noticed that over the period of the workshop some people really open up and start talking about personal stuff. Especially blokes who, when they are head down working on their board are more comfortable about opening up. You learn some amazing things about people. "I want to get to guys BEFORE they get down the slippery slope of depression.

Catching guys who are feeling stressed or suffering from burnout. Spending some time in nature, away from technology and using your hands to create a stunning piece of craftsmanship has huge benefits and I have seen it first-hand." His three day workshops allow anybody to build a board. No experience is necessary. All tools, material and know-how are supplied - all you need is the passion to create and you're welcome to do the workshop with a friend. Greg teaches men, women, mums or dads with their sons or

daughters, anybody who wants to learn the craft, create a piece of art for the home or shape their next addition to their quiver. Greg is passionate about creating sustainable boards that do away with foam. What's so bad about foam? Well, the annual production of new surfboards, roughly 750,000, creates around 220,000 tons of CO2e. An average Polyester resin shortboard has an enormous carbon footprint and although most people tend to hang on to their boards for a long time, they eventually all end up in landfill. You can do your bit by maintaining your foam boards properly, fixing dings quickly and extending its life as long as possible. Also, consider an eco friendly option there are plenty available these days. Greg's boards are all crafted using timber which is sourced from a plantation on the mid north coast of New South Wales, and is sustainably grown (no rainforest felling) giving the whole experience a good vibe. The unique timber is called paulownia. These fast-growing trees grow to about 20 metres in 12 years, and produce a lightweight hardwood which is incredibly easy to work with. "I also like to throw a bit of Western Red Cedar in to give the boards a bit of bling," Greg says. He takes pride in designing every board from scratch taking into consideration the height, weight and experience of the person who will surf the board. By using only wood, Greg can help his customers create their own completely individual and unique board. "People are blown away when they are able to take a bunch of timber on day one and then by day three they are doing the final sanding on a hollow core wooden surfboard that they have crafted themselves. "Watching those people get so attached to their board as it takes shape - you know they have built it themselves, they own it and they are always really proud of what they have created," he says. The end product is truly a work of art. It's not all work. Of course, there is time to sneak off for some 'Vitamin Sea' during the board shaping process. "I am also a big believer in "Ocean Therapy" and we have the opportunity to go for a swim or surf and get some water time during the workshop while the glue dries," Greg says. During his down time, you might find Greg taking in the white sand and clear waters of Double Island Point, or packing up a timber quiver and heading off for a PNG adventure. "I ride everything from a 5'10" fish to a 9'3" nose rider. Love 'em all and try not to have favourites. They're all wood and they're all good!"

Sustainable boards with heart. Greg knows this craft reduces stress and anxiety and holds one on one workshops with this in mind.

RIVER PLAN AN OPEN BOOK

As of midnight last Sunday the Noosa Surf Club closed its doors for the next ten days. It has now entered a major stage of the renovations. The total renovations, it is hoped, will be completed by midSeptember. As these are the first major upgrades in a decade the final results are eagerly awaited and with its beach front views the finished structure will definitely give its members and visitors a more pleasing atmosphere. The work in progress during closure will center on a refurbishment of the bar and a totally new front entrance. "The completion of the update," said club manager Anton Mogg, "is eagerly awaited and after viewing the artist impression, we are sure that the finished product will give us a club that will be second to none." A section of the wall will be used to display photographs revolving around the early history of the club. Club officials are very interested in talking with people who may have photos that are relevant to that period and anyone who may have such memorabilia (original blazers shirts etc.) are invited to contact the club. This is of the utmost importance as such memorabilia and photographs play a vital role in consolidating the proud history of this great club. As we are all aware it is a clubs pride, history and traditions that create its character, a character in which all who pass through its doors will take pride. â—?

Residents have until 24 August to have a say on the Draft Noosa River Plan. The Draft Plan proposes a range of actions including the transfer of anchoring, mooring and live-aboard management from State to Council control. Mayor Tony Wellington said the Noosa River needed tailored management of the Noosa River and its catchment."The Noosa River's lower reaches represent one of the busiest and most popular waterways in south east Queensland. As a result, the poor river is under increasing pressure," he said. "The Draft Plan includes possible actions such as establishing a Council River Management Unit. This would allow Council officers to educate river users about marine zones and migratory bird habitats. The unit could also monitor unauthorised structures such as jetties and pontoons. "Other activities could include working closely with rural landholders and business operators to help reduce polluted run-off from rural and urban areas. "However, all of these additional Council actions come at a cost, which is why Council is keen to hear the community's thoughts on the suggestions raised in the Draft Plan. To what extent are residents prepared to pay for improved river monitoring and actions?" To view or comment on the Draft Noosa River Plan visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au, visit the libraries or Council's administration building at 9 Pelican Street, Tewantin.. â—?

THE INSIDERS SHARE THE VIEW BY MARGARET MACCOLL The results of the upcoming by-election in Longman, which includes part of the Sunshine Coast, could be a determining factor in deciding the date of the next federal election, according to political analysts speaking on Monday at the Noosa Alive festival. The analysts claimed Australia's political arena to be in a state of change, its twoparty preferred system at its least popular in the past 100 years and economic inequality central to the debate. The festival bought Barrie Cassidy and the Insiders to The J Theatre at Noosa Junction in front of a packed crowd to discuss the state of federal politics. Joining Barrie on the panel were The Guardian Australia's editor Lenore Taylor, Katharine Murphy from the Guardian and The Age, Phil Coorey of The Australian Financial Review and Dennis Atkins from The Courier Mail. Coorey predicted if the government won the by-election in Longman Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull might be tempted to call a federal election in October. "You call an election when you have the best chance of winning," he said. But Atkins predicted it wouldn't be before Christmas. "Malcolm Turnbull is terrified of getting it wrong," he said. "Paul Keating said if you're going to the gallows, you don't run."

The Insiders: Barrie Cassidy with Katharine Murphy, Phil Coorey, Lenore Taylor and Dennis Atkins. Taylor said a commonly held view was that politicians were self-interested and selfserving and had one set of rules separate to the rest of the population. Coorey said most people were unhappy with their lot. Their wages were not keeping pace with the rising cost of living. "Most people are finding it tough," he

said. Determining an effective policy on electricity and dealing with the burgeoning national and state debts were raised as major issues facing the government. The Noosa Alive festival continues until 29 July. For more information visit www. noosaalive.com.au ●

HOSPITAL WILL STAY OPEN TO PUBLIC Health Minister Steven Miles has assured Noosa residents that Noosa Hospital will continue to provide services to public patients beyond the end of the existing contract in 2020. Mr Miles assurance came in response to questions from Noosa councillor Ingrid Jackson seeking reassurance that the State Government would continue to fund public beds and the emergency department at Noosa Private Hospital after its current contract with Ramsay Health Care ends in 2020. Her letter followed the recent announcement of an $86 million redevelopment for Nambour Hospital. Cr Jackson pointed out that Noosa Shire continues to have a vital need for local hospital services, with one-quarter of its population already over the age of 65 and a forecast that this will rise to one-third in the future. "The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service and Ramsay Health Care are currently negotiating new contract arrangements that will extend the provision of public health services at the Noosa Private Hospital beyond 2020," Mr Miles said. "This will ensure that public health services continue to be provided for the benefit of residents within this area," he said. ●

CALL HIM KING OF THE MOUNTAIN BY MARGARET MACCOLL "It's there," is the reason Walter Keleman, 65, gave for lining up for the 20th time to run up and down Mr Cooroora for the King of the Mountain race in Pomona on Sunday. Thousands of spectators attended Pomona's festival before lining the streets to watch the main event. Now in its 40th year the race attracted 80 runners ranging in age from 15 to 78. Runners came from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the ACT with about 30 Sunshine Coast contenders against a contingent of about 10 from New Zealand, many of those competitors in their own

country's King of the Mountain 8km race in Kawerau. The three favourites in the race and winners of last year's King of the Mountain race were back to fight it out. Ben Duffus, 26, from Brisbane, who came in second last year, led the race from the base of the mountain to the finish line, missing out on the 22min43sec record by about a minute. Mark Bourne, last year's winner, came in second with Daniel Jones, 27, from NZ retaining his third position. Meg Reeves, 34, a neurological nurse from NSW was the first woman across the finish line about the 30minute mark. â—?

DIGITAL HUB EXPANDS AT PEREGIAN

The third and final stage of the Peregian Beach Rufous Street Masterplan Digital Hub has had an injection of funds with the federal government putting forward $2,550,179 to match Noosa Council’s contribution of the $5,100,358 project. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said with the funds from the Building Better Regions Fund - Infrastructure Projects stream, council could now build a new Community House on the site of the old Peregian Beach bowls club building and then expand the Digital Hub into the old Community House. “The funding will enable us to renovate the old building and construct an additional 80sqm extension. This will mean that we can expand the number of people working at the hub from 60 to 100,“ he said. “The funding also supports the construction of a bespoke playground as well as additional parking.“ Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said the Noosa community could look forward to the many benefits the investment would deliver, helping Noosa to diversify its economy, creating new jobs and ensuring it continues to thrive and prosper into the future. “In April I was pleased to bring the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack to Peregian Beach where he met with Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and senior officers involved with the Digital Hub project,” he said. ●

THE LOWDOWN

MAYA LEAPS INTO HOLIDAY OF DANCE What did you do on your holidays? While many local kids stayed home to relax and make the most of the warm winter weather teenagers Maya Rune, 14, flew more than 20 hours to Denmark to attend Summer School with the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen. Maya trained with ballet students from around the world and learned the famous Bournonville ballet style, which dates back more than 200 years. "Bournonville style is known the world over. It is very fast, light and elegant - a lot of footwork that is precise and fast. It is challenging for me as I usually prefer adagio styles," she said. Equally challenging for Maya was the prospect of dancing full time for three weeks. "I've attended week-long dance schools in Brisbane and Sydney in the past, but this is definitely a new experience - and certainly the highlight of my dance career so far," she said. A Dane at heart Maya's choice of holiday camp was an easy one for the Danish-born teen who moved to Noosa as an infant with her mother Karina and Maya's Danish grandmother Kirsten played chaperone. "I learned Danish from my family and I understand it completely," she said. "When I was visiting Denmark last Christmas, I learned a lot about the culture and the Danish Ballet."

Maya Rune in Denmark. A rising star Maya's Noosa dance teacher Brigette Kay runs Performing Arts Factory and has high praise for her star student, who is studying Advanced 1 Ballet with the British Ballet Organisation along with a variety of other dance styles, including lyrical, contemporary, jazz, hip hop and musical theatre. "Maya is dedicated and highly intelligent; a very hard worker," Brigette said. "She is following in the footsteps of lots of other successful dancers from our studio by gaining international dance experience,

but she is the first student to achieve this honour." Maya spent months preparing for her time at the Danish Ballet, in addition to her regular classes. "In a typical week, I usually dance about 10 hours," Maya explained. "Before I left, I also did a lot of pilates and strengthening with a physio at my dance studio." Dance for life Having danced since she was three, it's not surprising that Maya speaks highly of her sport too. "As a young girl, dance taught me to

work with others and to achieve. It taught me discipline and to be well behaved. It's also a great way to keep fit and healthy," she said. "Now that I'm older, I can see that I've also gained discipline, poise and elegance. Dance has taught me focus, resilience and determination. It requires such mental strength!. "I've learned to use those skills in other parts of my life. Performance has taught me about confidence, public speaking and being in front of an audience. â—?

RON LANE’S PEOPLE

RON LANE

FOR PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS The recent Prostate Cancer Awareness Luncheon held at the Noosa Australian Football Club was an outstanding success. To put it bluntly the club was packed to the rafters. For the organisers, the Noosa Prostate Association, the capacity house enabled this hard working and dedicated group to achieve their goals. One was to raise substantial funds for donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia but most important was the chance to promote full awareness of the

dangers of this cancer. For too long now many of our fathers brothers and mates have been walking around with their head in the clouds thinking because they feel on top of the world that all is well. The fact that you have no symptoms does not guarantee a clean bill of health. For Association chairman John Little and his committee the public response, which saw some 200 brightly attired guests in attendance, was indeed very gratifying. After being introduced by function M.C.

Beautiful clothing for women through all ages and stages of life. 50 Mary Street Noosaville Parking behind the store Monday to Saturday 9am - 5pm Sunday 9am - 1pm 1800 804 776 www.zephyrloungewear.com 12394758-CG31-18

Steve Haddan John welcomed M.P. Sandy Bolton and guests then gave a big vote of thanks to all who worked to make the occasion a success; in particular thanked the medical team of doctors and nurses ( "You tell your mates to come and visit us," said the ladies) for being in attendance. For John this was his second fundraiser as a couple months prior to the luncheon, he and five others had hiked the Jatbula Trail, in the Nitmiluk National Park, a walk of six days which resulted in a total sponsorship of $15,000. Because of his leadership and determination shown in the organising and success of both functions, National Chairman of the PCFA Jim Hughes AM, presented John with a Certificate of Appreciation. This was followed by medical presentations by both Dr.Tony Gianduzzo and his brother Associate Professor Troy Gianduzzo who, with the support of videos really pushed the awareness factor. The point that really hit home was when Dr. Tony Gianuzzo remarked, "If you don't walk through our doors- we can't help you." Other points that men should take on board are ;200,000 men are living with prostate cancer, more than 3000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia each year and risk increases with age and family history. And perhaps the biggest exposure of all is that more men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer. For a long time now we have been conscious that the awareness program for this killer of men has been far out-weighed by the similar program conducted for prevention of breast cancer. "The main reason for this," said Dr. Tony Gianduzzo, "is that breast cancer takes a lot of young women who leave behind a family of young children and this naturally grabs public attention and support. However for men their problems start much later in life and their families have grown up." ''The total amount raised by the walk, the luncheon, auctions and raffles came to an incredible $110,000.'' said (N.P.C.) Vice President Ian Miller. Both John Little and Jim Hughes spoke in support of Ian Miller when he extended his sincere thanks. "This shows what an incredible community we live in," said Mr. Little. "Our committee hit a few of the right buttons and our people responded." On the lighter side an incredible job was done by M.C. Steve Haddan and celebrity speaker Sam Kekovich, whose salty humor left people in fits of laughter.

John Little, Dr Tony Gianuzzo and Dr Troy Gianduzzo with Tara Willcock and Petra Golley. In thanking all involved a spokesman for the Noosa Association made particular note of the outstanding input of Peter Tyne who was responsible for organizing accommodation, food and the presence of both Haddan and Kekovich: also obtaining the A.F.L Club as the premises for the occasion. Rotary, the Noosa Surf Club Manager Anton Mogg and staff, plus Celebrity Auctioneer Lance Smith, who succeed in dragging thousands out of wallets, were also amongst the many sponsors acknowledged. "We were warned that for a first function like this, we will if lucky, raise in the vicinity of $20,000; so our total has exceeded all expectations," said the Noosa Chairman. "This will now become an annual affair and we will soon start working towards next year's luncheon. We will reform our committee and in particular I would like to see women come on board." To close on a personal note some of your local lifesavers have died of this disease, others are in the process of fighting it and several lucky ones have beaten it. So like the doctors and nurses said, "Walk through the door and for God's sake talk to us." So come on gentlemen, wake up- it's time to walk. â—?

THE BOLTON REPORT

SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP

THE FUTURE OF WORK IN NOOSA Some years ago I wrote a piece for Business Matters magazine titled 'Byte to Bite' highlighting the possibilities of a Noosa that provided the perfect base for the client and knowledge industries in multiple realms. Environmental, economic and social solutions could be piloted, the organic paddock to plate experience enjoyed as part of a world class wellbeing and health destination, with the iconic Noosa name and brand capitalised on for much more than tourism. True diversification in line with our vision and commitment to retain and enhance our environmental credibility and laid back lifestyle. Five years on, we are seeing this realm become closer to a reality -from the growth of special effects training company FXPHD, global destination agent Aspire, and a host of boutique businesses including microbreweries, organic cosmetics and specialist health services - we are on the way to defining that we are both a lifestyle and business base. However we do have some teething issues, including lack of connectivity in telecommunications and transport, aging codes and conflicted zonings to accommodate multi-use sites of boutique production and retail. There is also a disconnect between the demand and supply of our workforce, with employers requiring customised and relevant training and education in our key and emerging industries. With hospitality employers reporting up to 60% of their workforce on 457 visa holders, and our high rates of un and underemployment in our youth, we have some work to do.

Thankfully many of these issues have opportunity of being relegated to the past through a new planning scheme, the newly formed Education and Employment Alliance, the old TAFE site, community housing projects and alternate possibilities for transport including RideShare apps and partnering initiatives for pilots between local and State

Government. These opportunities could see a vast reduction in our challenges over the next five years. A 10 year cycle. They say one always has to be patient? So how does the future for work in Noosa look in an ever-increasing world of global connectivity and international markets? And how will Noosa capitalise on opportunities?

· By ideating, developing and providing truly unique products, services and experiences in line with our local and regional ethos that appeal to identified target markets. We are unique and let's keep raising the bar, and that includes customising training and rebranding our customer facing industries. · By leveraging resources, accessing information and collaborating to ensure that strategies complement one another instead of clashing. · By developing a concise resource portal that includes investors, and maximising the infrastructure available. A share economy is also about space, and how space is used. · To solve our community concerns such as housing as enterprise opportunities and job creation. The circular and shared economy offers good work opportunities, and can be exported to other communities. Community activism is not about waving placards nor protesting. It is about communities addressing their needs through connecting the dots and resources, and getting on with the job of resolving together. They are also job creators in themselves, as seen in examples such as community, child and aged care. The future of our economy and work in Noosa is through uniqueness and being bold. In products, services and experiences, in thought and action, and by growing our culture of environmental and human wellbeing, determination and dare I say 'that' word, innovation! ● Until next time Sandy

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

LENSCAPE

The Good. In 2015 my two bouts of pneumonia were cured with antibiotics. The Bad. In 2016 I was told because of having toomany antibiotics I was diagnosed with C.Dif (Clostridium Difficile.) The Ugly. Now in 2018 I had the recommended flu injection in April. Unfortunately I still had an onset of flu in the beginning of May and seem to be progressing through the the alphabet of antibiotics to cure these latest “dinosaur" bugs namely pseudomonas and stenotrophomonas (Jurassic Park does exist). My concern is that C. Dif might raise its ugly head again but will still put my trust in the doctors, nurses and excellent medical system we have on the Sunshine Coast. OPEN OUR HEARTS Art the provocateur. Few people were unmoved by Mayor Wellington’s speech at the opening of the “No Human Being Is Illegal” exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery last Friday. With deep emotion, he declared his anger and sadness at the Federal Government’s border policy and the desperate situation faced by refugees and asylum seekers. Surely the provocation is for us all to not just open our hearts, but also open our doors. There is a building languishing in Tewantin. Yes, the old TAFE college, whose destiny has been debated for years. Imagine offering this as a migrant centre? A gesture of sincerity. Dare the thought - Noosa has seceded once already, could it go the next step? Amanda Westwood, Noosa Heads

RULES FOR NORTH SHORE Years ago parameters were set for the use of Noosa North Shore beach. Camping areas were demarcated, no drive zones were introduced, signage saying “All road rules apply”, a beach permit system etc etc. Sunday just gone three vehicles towing boats, with their kids sitting on the boats, and four other vehicles with them, venture through the No Vehicle Zone in front of the Noosa North Shore Council camp site. It’s school holidays with children and

people everywhere. These vehicle free zones were put in place for obvious safety reasons but if you are a netter from NSW you may drive where you like? Further towards the river mouth it resembles nothing short of a squatter camp or informal settlement. This is clearly a No Camping Zone but if you a netter from NSW you can camp anywhere? There are also signs saying No Fires anywhere along this beach, they make fires. There also signs saying No domestic pets

past first cutting, they have their dogs with them. What’s going on? Could the National Parks please explain why, year after year these netters are above every law that is laid down for the area and absolutely nothing is done about it? When will the State Government or our local independent MP for the area realise that the sooner this area be transferred to the Noosa Council for law enforcement the better. Name withheld, Noosa

CARS AND GUITARS BRING THE STARS Cars and guitars go hand in hand and that was the basis for an impromptu music and cars session at Noosaville on Saturday. "Most people who can spend stupid amounts of money on cars can usually do that on guitars," said Tim of Music at Noosa. People responded with about a dozen

impressive vehicles turning up in the carpark and some up and coming young musicians coming along to play. The Myths entertained with their rock and roll tunes and were followed by The Dennis Sisters, the hottest young act in Noosa. ●

From the moment you enter this home you are impressed by the simplicity and total elegance. One has to love the floor tile which take on an appearance of marble. The very sensible and workable floorplan flows beautifully towards the breathtaking view over the lakes and golf course. The four and five million dollar houses in Noosa Springs do not boast a view any better than this. The elegant kitchen, dining and family rooms flow out to the outdoor dining area, of very nice proportions and covered by a fully automated vergola. When you sit there having a wonderful lunch enjoying the view, if you are unlucky enough to get a shower of rain, you don’t have to put your glass down, the roof will close. Currently configured with three bedrooms there are two options to increase to four. Through the very pretty Tuscan courtyard is a highly sought after Studio Suite, perfect for guests who are staying with you but not living with you. Upstairs the master suite is spacious and elegant commanding a fabulous view. It has a generous ensuite bathroom with double vanities and a corner bath. The third bedroom also enjoys a great view and a very nice ensuite bathroom. The loungeroom, with the view is of very nice proportions and comfortably homey. There is also a very cosy separate TV room. Built originally as a fourth bedroom with separate bathroom, the study is generous in size. Beautifully manicured and easy to maintain gardens have a fully automated watering system. There is a double garage and a separate golf cart garage. There is a 24 hour per day manned, security gatehouse and there has never been a break in or burglary in the history of Noosa Springs. A collaboration between Tim Crabtree and Shane Fairweather of Land and Sea Brewery and Thomas Bexon and Jake Bowrey of Thomas Surfboards resulted in the launch last Saturday of a crisp rice lager. Jake Bowrey said the two businesses which operate as neighbours out of their Project Avenue, Noosaville, bases decided a bespoke beer and a bespoke surfboard would combine well. "We're just friends of the guys and we thought it was a good fit," Jake said. The "clean, crisp lager" from Land and Sea will be presented in cans carrying designs from Thomas' surfboards. Jake said the rice lager which is more traditionally found in Japan was a tribute to the country where many of their boards found their homes. The lager will be available from Land and Sea, Sum Yung Guys, Sunshine Beach and Village Bicycle, Noosa Junction, and will soon be distributed to selected bars and restaurants at coastal towns. â—? FOCUS ON ‌ tax

TAX TIPS A TREAT income purposes to receive a deduction. Importantly, buying more stock before year end does not reduce your profit or tax (just your cash). Defer income Businesses can benefit from deferring invoices until after 30 June. By delaying income, in effect you defer paying tax on that income for the financial year. Wages & PAYG Payment Summaries Ensure you have reconciled your wages and are ready to generate the PAYG Payment Summaries (aka Group Certificates) by 14 July. Before issuing the PAYG Payment Summaries, check the yearly payroll summary agrees to your account totals in your Profit and Loss Statement, ensure any deductions are handled correctly (salary sacrificed super, family support payments so-on), and RESC (Reportable Employer Superannuation Contributions) are reported correctly. Contractor Reporting - Taxable Payments Reporting for those in the building and construction industry is due shortly after year end. Make sure you have the necessary information to complete the ATO forms. It is like PAYG Payment Summaries/Group Certificate reporting for employees, but instead is for the payments you have made to contractors and subcontractors. Cleaning and Courier related industries will need to comply with this next year, so please ensure your computer systems record the necessary information to assist you with this when the time comes (must start recording the information from 1 July 2018). Trust resolutions Trustees of discretionary trusts must make and document resolutions prior to 30 June 2018 regarding how trust income will be distributed among beneficiaries. Please contact your accountant if you have a Family Trust and haven't discussed this prior to year-end. Holmans clients have theirs prepared in June. If you haven't booked your tax planning session, contact your accountant or Holmans now to ensure you have sufficient time before 30 June 2018 to implement any actions. Tax planning is essential as it provides you with the opportunity to actively seek ways to reduce your tax liability and increase your overall wealth. This can be achieved by implementing tailored strategies to reduce the impact of capital gains, prepaying interest, investing in

Remember to keep proof of everything you intend to claim. sensible investments, assessing your current structures, and other similar proactive measures prior to 30 June.

Importantly, tax planning also allows you to budget for your up-coming tax liability by estimating the amount payable early. â—?

12394342-LB31-18

Here are our top tips for year-end preparation and tax planning for businesses -Pay quarterly super Super Guarantee (SG) contributions must be paid before 30 June to qualify for a tax deduction in the 2017-18 financial year. Consider bringing forward June quarter SG payments to increase the benefit. In addition, the ATO are actively targeting this audit area in 2018 and have released details of a one-off amnesty to bring any outstanding employee superannuation payments up to date. If you are behind, now is the time to bring it up to date, as the penalties for not doing so are severe. Additional Superannuation Consider maximising your personal superannuation contributions. The maximum superannuation contribution you can make and claim a deduction for is $25,000 per person (all super contributions, including life insurance, other superannuation funds, employer and personal). The superannuation fund must receive the funds and allocate them to your account before 30 June. Accordingly, you should seek advice from your accountant/ financial planner before doing so and will need to liaise with your superannuation fund about how to make the contribution. Small Business Entity - Asset purchases under $20,000 Small businesses (under $10 million in turnover) can immediately deduct the business portion of most assets if they cost less than $20,000 ($19,999 or less) and were purchased before 30 June 2018. This deduction is used for each asset that costs less than $20,000, whether new or second-hand. You claim the deduction, in the year the asset was first used or installed ready for use. Write-off bad debts Review your debtor list to identify those who owe you money but are unlikely to pay. Write-off bad debts before 30 June - the debt must not be merely doubtful and must have been previously included as assessable income to qualify as a deduction. Prepaid expenses Small business entities may bring forward deductible expenses such as rent, repairs and office supplies that cover a period of no more than 12 months. Stocktake Trading stock should be reviewed before 30 June to identify any obsolete, slow moving or damaged stock. Obsolete stock must be physically disposed of for

KEEP IT DRY FOR A HEALTHY, HAPPY JULY BY HOLLIE HARRIS

High levels of alcohol consumption can add up to some high-stake health risks, so Cancer Council Queensland is raising an alcohol-free glass to the Queenslanders who've spent the last few weeks reassessing their intake and raising funds for cancer as part of Dry July. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms

Most of us know we shouldn't drink as much, or as often, but don't take the steps to break the habit. We are on the last week of Dry July, so keep up the good work and don't fall back into old habits just because the month is over.

Combining his patience and skills with electrical devices and his great determination to fix or improve any problem. His keen interest in computers, has grown with the mindboggling array of computer and technology changes and many of his teenage years were spent building and fixing computers, integrating networks for gaming and always learning new things. This Peregian Springs resident, has now turned his experience into a new business, to help any one of any age, with any technology problem, big or small, that they may have. With expansive knowledge of hardware, software, apps, Cloud based storage and more, Felix has helped everyone from business people, looking to integrate their devices to allow flexible access to files and data outside the office. For individuals and a small group of friends, just wanting to be shown how to download photos off a Tablet, iPhone, Android or regular camera and save them for easy access on a PC. Smart phone changeovers to help minimise data loss, smart TV connections, Facebook, Skype and Facetime, to keep up with family and friends. Even setting up online shopping for convenient grocery delivery, to music apps, connection to Cars or Bluetooth devices, as well as adding more memory to PCs, or to the Cloud to help you store more pictures, songs or information. Chris McMillan cheered on Dry-July-ers for taking steps to reduce their cancer risk and make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. "Those going dry this July have been fundraising on our behalf will be helping us to continue Transport to Treatment - a volunteer-delivered service that transport cancer patients to and from treatment," Ms McMillan said. "By taking a break from alcohol, participants are also benefitting their health. "Many people don't realise, but if you drink too much and are overweight or obese your cancer risk is higher. "As well as being classed as a type 1 carcinogen - a known substance that causes cancer - alcoholic beverages contain a lot of kilojoules and can easily contribute to weight gain." Cancer Council Queensland recommends people limit their consumption of alcohol to reduce their risk of cancer and follow the National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines for alcohol consumption of no more than two standard drinks a day. To help Dry July-ers keep focused for the final stretch of the fundraising campaign, Ms McMillan shared these four tips. One, change your after-work routine. Go for a walk when you get home rather than heading straight for the fridge and pop the kettle on for a cup of tea instead of reaching for an alcoholic beverage. Two, make an effort to keep spending

quality time with friends and family. Look for local events happening during the day, or tell your friends just to bring themselves, not a bottle of wine, when they come over. Also, see if you can get a friend, partner or family member to join you in going dry, so you can keep each other accountable. Three, start a healthy habit or new hobby. Alcohol consumption can sometimes become an automatic response. Instead of reaching for a drink after a long week or when stressed, swap in a healthy habit, like going for a run to improve your mood, or start a creative pursuit to relieve stress. Four, count how much money you've saved by not buying alcohol. Try putting aside the money you would have spent on alcohol, and at the end of the month, that money can go towards a nice treat for yourself, towards a saving goal, or increase your Dry July fundraising to support people living with cancer. Every drink you give up benefits your health and every dollar you raise helps ease the burden of cancer patients. ●

Having been interested in the various forms of visual art for most of his life, Bob has happily accepted the invitation by the Noosa Open Studios group to be their keynote speaker at Rickys on 8 August. Bob lived in Melbourne for 40 years where he started the Budget Rent a Car Business. He also lived in Southern California for 20 years where amongst other things I served in the US Army then had a couple of years in both Alaska and Japan and now very happily calls Noosa home. His story has been well documented in his three best-selling books, "Bob Ansett, An Autobiography", "The Customer" and "The Meaning Of Success." He founded the Budget Rent A Car System in 1965 and in doing so developed a unique organisation that grew from a small two-person business to a dynamic enterprise employing over 4000 people trading in 20 countries with annual turnover exceeding a billion dollars. Budget was a trendsetter in employee relations and was one of the first companies

to introduce health and fitness programmes for its employees. Budget's innovative marketing and customer service excellence was recognised not only in Australia but also internationally. Leaving Budget in 1990, he established 'Bob Ansett Marketing' to manage his speaking engagements and provide consulting services in the field of Customer Service. This company now operates from Noosa and Bob is thrilled to share his expertise with an audience at Ricky's and help further the"With over 60 studios and galleries spread around the Noosa Shire this event provides a unique opportunity to not only visit our amazing artists in their work place but also to renew acquaintances with all the diverse sectors of the Noosa Shire," Bob says. "Over the years Josie and I collected art for our own enjoyment and for the Australian Bicentennial celebrations in 1988 we put together an exhibition of 58 paintings featuring young and emerging Australian artists. The exhibition toured all capital city and many regional galleries over a two year period celebrating our young nation and the brilliance of our talented young artists.

Noosa Open Studios first weekend will feature studios on the Coast. The second weekend will see artists in the hinterland open their studios. Local galleries are also part of the event, with exhibitions and workshops being held throughout the ten day period. This will provide visitors with many opportunities to participate, whether by viewing art, buying it or making it themselves! All of it is a celebration of our artists and visual arts across Noosa. Visitors will see a whole range of art, from drawings to paintings to ceramic art and sculptures, as well as glass art, textile art and installation art. Much of the art is available to buy, and many of the artists will be holding workshops and demonstrations throughout the event. It is a great way to get out and about and see more of our local talent and the hidden parts of Noosa. Tickets to Ricky's are  for $125 per person and available from 5447 2455 or at www.rickys.com.au before August 2nd. To find more information about Noosa Open Studios and learn about the artists, go to www.noosaopenstudios.com.au. Printed studio guides, with maps and details of artists' studio locations will be distributed locally closer to the date. â—?

HALF-PRICE DINING LANDS IN NOOSA BY HOLLIE HARRIS

helped patrons discover and try new restaurants; "We connect adventurous food lovers with quality restaurants during their quietest times; it's a win-win solution for both parties." "Locals who want to expand their palates and experience something new will love using First Table, as will restaurateurs keen to kick start their nighttime services by filling those early evening empty seats." Monkley says First Table connects

locals to the best hospitality a city has to offer: whether it's new openings, industry mainstays, or best kept secrets. "Introducing people to the best establishments and hidden gems in each city is what we live for, and it's what's made First Table the success that it's become," she says. "From award-winning, high-end eateries to those little known wonders waiting to be discovered — we see first-time experiences turning into loyal patronage

time and time again." Monkley is currently signing on top restaurants in Noosa and promises that the initial lineup when the region goes live on the site in a few weeks time will be impressive. Noosa diners who sign up to the website before the launch early next month will be given a $5 booking credit - go to www. firsttable.com.au â—?

Noosa is the latest in a string of Australian cities to get half-priced early bird dining at top restaurants. The deal is here to stay forever and it's all thanks to Australasia's premier restaurant discovery service, First Table, which launches in Noosa early August 2018. First Table offers exclusive half-priced meals to diners booking early evening seating through the website, and operates in more than 35 cities across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, with more than 800 restaurants in the network. Users pay just $10 to make an early booking at a partner restaurant for half price off the total food bill. There's only one table available each night, and its first in, best fed. "Australians have embraced the First Table concept as it's swept across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast. Mooloolaba and Maroochydore went live just a few months ago and was embraced very quickly. Now, we're so pleased to be able to bring it to the good people of Noosa," First Table's Queensland Territory Manager Jessie Monkley says. "Noosa is renowned for its world-class restaurant scene. That's why we're launching First Table here - to help foodies discover all of the great venues that Noosa has to offer." Founder Mat Weir wanted to create a system which not only helped restaurants get evenings off to a good start, but also

STICKY PORK BELLY BITES

BEST REGIONAL BAR IN THE COUNTRY BY HOLLIE HARRIS Miss Moneypenny's does it again! Having been nominated as a finalist for the Best Regional Bar in Australia award for the fifth year running, the Hastings Street venueis set to be up against some fierce competition with finalists located in prime destinations such as Byron Bay, Cairns, Mornington Peninsula and Terrigal. The Australian Bar Awards are the ultimate recognition within the hospitality industry, and Miss Moneypenny's is the only venue on the Sunshine Coast to have been nominated, or to have won one of the prestigious and sought-after awards. Miss Moneypenny's signature cocktails combined with a world class menu created by recently appointed internationally renowned chef Rose Ang has firmed their reputation on Hastings Street as being one of the most frequented dining and cocktail bar destinations for locals and tourists alike. Owner of Miss Moneypenny's, Ben Walsh says is thrilled that the nomination will once more raise the profile of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast as a high-end hospitality destination. "We are all extremely proud of this achievement. To be recognised as one of the very best venues in the nation every year that we have been open is testament to our quality, consistency, creativity and professionalism. I have my team to thank for this achievement, they take great pride in producing the very best experiences for the customers and they excel at doing so," Ben says. "Never before has the industry been in such good form" said the The Australian Bar Awards regarding this year's selected finalists. The awards night will be held on 18 September at Doltone House in Sydney, and with the best of the Australian hospitality industry in one room, it promises to be a huge night," he says. It's been a big week for the restaurant with the launch of their new menu this week. Internationally renowned Executive Chef Rose Ang and Head Chef Gene Quinlan have combined their decades of culinary experience to create a menu that has incorporated the latest international dining trends focusing on globally influenced Modern Mediterranean cuisine. Rose brings a wealth of knowledge from her Executive positions at some of the world's most renowned restaurants such as Nobu, Zuma and Roka London, Bedrutt's Palace Switzerland, Buddha Bar from Paris and was the opening Executive Chef at Sake Melbourne. 'My inspiration was to take the existing noosatoday.com.au

Miss Moneypenny's dining experience and enhance it with an international influence combined with fresh Australian produce," Rose says. The menu showcases over 15 new a la carte dishes in addition to a casual eats menu, share boards, gourmet pizzas and a generous selection of appetisers and desserts. The Entree menu includes dishes such as the double baked Spanner Crab souffle with a shellfish bisque, petite herb salad and lemon oil whilst the main menu showcases dishes such as coral coast Barramundi with caper berries, kipflers, eschalot and citrus beurre noisette. Australian produce is prominent with fresh locally caught seafood, free range chicken, premium lamb from the Goldfield region and a selection of regional cheeses. In addition they have expanded their range of vegetarian and gluten free options including a baby beetroot tarte tatin and a main dish of coal grilled sweet potato accompanied with roast witlof, goats cheese labna, toasted pepitas and local honey drizzled with pedro ximenez. For the carnivores, Miss Moneypenny's has introduced a 1kg New England Tomahawk OP Rib Eye to the menu complete with antichucho sauce, trussed cherry tomatoes and double friend onion rings. Miss Moneypenny's are also offering cocktail making classes so patrons can experience firsthand why they have been nominated Best Regional Bar in Australia five times in a row. Learning a new skill has never been so much fun! Call 07 5474 9999 for more information.

FRIDAY FORUM This week our guest speaker is Aunty Judi Wickes and her topic is the 'Certificate of Exemption for Queensland's Aboriginal People'. In the late 19th century, the Queensland government had total control of its Indigenous population through policies and practices. In essence, any Aboriginal person wanting to leave a government reserve or church mission to live in mainstream society had to apply for a Certificate of Exemption. As well as a proud Kalkadoon and Wakka Wakka woman, Aunty Judi Wickes is a respected community Elder on the Sunshine Coast where she has lived for the past eighteen years. All are welcome at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre 5 Wallace Drive Noosaville on Friday July 27 to hear Aunty Judi explain her grandparent's journey from being removed as Stolen Generation children, to gaining their freedom and beyond. The forum commences at 10.30am and finishes at approximately 12.15pm. You are invited to learn more about the birds of Wallace Park by meeting Valda and friends in the car park at 8.30am. After working for 20 years in Local Council Laboratories to the changing landscape of council mergers and retail water utility take-overs, I personally witnessed a need for a more efficient, local water testing service on the Sunshine Coast If you have staining from your bore water and wonder why and/or need to know some chemistry of your water in order to select the right filter, Peter can help. You may simply wish to know if your rainwater tank passes the Qld Health Guidelines for microbiological quality.

I will report on water quality issues so you can make a more informed decision as part of your own risk management. Most laboratories won’t give you any recommendations or advice, they just punch out results with no or little interpretation. Try getting the appropriate bottles, paying upfront, and delivering them back full to any other Lab, you’ll be confronted with cut-off times and confusion. For more information or to book online, just visit the website www.scwatertesting.com.au or phone Peter on 5447 4226

SPORT TODAY DRAGONS TO THE FUTURE BY LEO WILES

noosatoday.com.au

The end of the school holidays saw over 80 Noosa Touch Football players, ranging from U10s to under 18s, head to Hervey Bay to compete in the 2018 Junior State Cup. Under clear blue skies our teams competed against those from around the state in both boys and girls divisions. The U10 girls, Geary's Gang, played admirably notching up their first JSC win (with many more to come I'm sure) and very close results against the top ranked teams Toowoomba and Coomera. I hear they may have been a little unlucky in the lip sync competition. Our U10 boys, Tim's Titans, also performed strongly with some wins and a couple of extremely tight matches. Talent scouts may be interested in this team if the Village People ever make a comeback. The Bradford Bella's, aka U12 girls, had an outstanding carnival finishing with 4 wins and a draw with the much-fancied Redlands, from 7 matches an outstanding result. They also claimed the Lip Sync Trophy for 2018 after the players, and coach, put on an impressive display on the dance floor. The U12 Boys, Pegsy's Panthers, found themselves in one of the toughest pools squaring off against both eventual finalists in round games. They still managed to come away with a win and some very

tight results. Great job boys. A big thanks to a couple of Coolum boys who joined the team for the carnival. The U14 girls, Craig's Crusaders, ended the carnival with a couple of wins and a further 3 games that went down to the wire with only 1 and 2 touchdowns the difference. Highlights of the carnival were a 4-2 win against Rockhampton and a 4-0 win over Arana. Jase's Juggernauts, U14 boys, were very similar to the girls both probably 1 win away from making the quarter finals. A couple of good wins against Gladstone and Redlands, a draw and 2 games that ended very closely against Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Shar's Stars, the U18 girls, had terrific wins over Rockhampton and Ipswich and

very close results against Redlands and Mackay. Although they would have liked to have gone further along in the carnival, their dedication and willingness to put their bodies on the line didn't go unnoticed, well done girls. The U18 boys, Jimmy's Jets, absolutely faced the toughest draw facing up to all the top teams from around the state. They held their own and gave it their all. Standout games for these boys would have to be the 4 all draw against Brisbane and 6-7 result against Palm Beach. Although they may have not taken the win it was a marvellous game to watch right down to the final siren. Our new season of junior touch begins shortly with Junior sign on Wednesday 1 August. ●

COOROY GOLF RESULTS

Bit of a stretch.

Thanks to the fantastic support from a broad range of community organisations and businesses the future looks bright for the mighty Eumundi Dragons. The 2018 season is proving one of the most successful in the club's 10-year history," says Club President Doug Toms. "Each of our four teams has been very competitive and have gained the respect of all opposition players and officials and that has been helped by all the wonderful local support we have received that takes the financial pressure off members." From grants such as the one from the Sunshine Council that paid for the sun smart 2018 season marquee (AM I MAKING THIS UP?) to direct financial assistance as well as the 'in-kind' gifts from local Eumundi businesses, the Dragons family have seen a marked increase in sponsors. With 13 being the very real lucky number for the hinterland Junior Rugby Union Club. With on-going support from Yandina to Cooroy's Bendigo Bank Community Bank with other sponsors including; the Imperial Hotel, Noosa Hinterland Realty, Templeton Ginger, Eumundi Meats, The Bakehouse, Eumundi Village Pharmacy, Heartwood Financial, Sunshine Toyota Currimundi, Brush and Bristle Barbershops, Cooroy Queen Alexander Lodge, Leo Wiles Photography and the Eumundi Aquatic Centre. "Their assistance from these organisations enables the club to provide an awarding winning family oriented Rugby experience for all players and their supporters" adds Doug. "On field and off from the subsidised strips to opening a bank account, buy a house or land, have a swim, receive sound financial advice, have a haircut , purchase award-winning meat or gorgeous decorated pastries and bread, or being served by friendly staff filling your script or serving a succulent meal enjoying a meal all on our doorstep. "It's just a handful of the reasons all of the Dragons players and coaching staff wear the distinctive club playing and dress kits proudly displaying the names and logos of all the valued sponsors." ●

CUBBY CALLS IT A DAY ON HIS JOURNEY BY JULIAN PITTS Champion rover Caleb 'Cubby' Isles closed the curtain on his footy journey last week and will be remembered as one of the Tigers greatest. The diminutive rover calls it a day after constant back restraints and a heavy work and family load. The dual Tiger premiership player and triple club champion has been a favourite amongst the tiger faithful for well over a decade with his courage and outstanding work rate making him a legend in South Queensland. His record speaks for itself as this writer rates him the best rover he had seen at Noosa. The likes of Mick Anderson, Justin Munro and Damian Hahn were all magnificent rovers for the Tigers in my time but this pint sized running machine takes the cake. Thanks for the service 'Cubby' and I'm sure we'll see you at the

football club in the future. The Rococo's Noosa Tigers continued on their winning ways with a comprehensive victory over Mayne at Weyba rd last Saturday. Whilst a slow start had the game evenly poised after the first 20 minutes it was all Noosa from then on. Gun onballer Tommy Templeton dominated the entire day with powerful break away and possession to be clearly best player in the ground. In form ruckman Connor McDonald again slaughtered the opposition with his superior tap work and follow up whilst skipper Aaron Laskey was an impressive figure across half back. Recruit Nathan McKendrick impressed many of the tiger faithful also with his constant courage and class whilst stand in forwards Mick gaffs and Nathan Winter presented well up forward and finished the work of the on-ball

brigade. Harry Maher was as cool as ever across half back with his younger brother Tommy making his senior debut and not at all dazed by the standard jump. The youngster finished with 19 touches on debut and in particularly looked comfortable at the coal face. It's a massive weekend this weekend at Tigerland as we celebrate our 2018 Past Players Day with Aspley. Australian cricket gun and ex coach Darren Lehman entertains us at the President's Luncheon so all is set for a wonderful afternoon at Weyba Road. A big thanks to all those ladies who presented for our yearly Ladies Luncheon last Saturday and from the sounds of things it was loud and long. Good luck to all Noosa Tigers teams competing this weekend Go tigers Cheers Pittsy JUNIOR REPORTS Noosa Red - Under 10 Boys We played Maroochydore Skippy's under lights on Friday night in perfect conditions. It was by far our biggest challenge for the season and the whole team stood up and answered the challenge. Miller Axel and Reilly were dominant all game whilst Darcy, Liam and Noah were also great kicking long into the forward line to Charlee, Oliver, Will and Zion. Teleah, Monty and Byron were solid contributors also. Super effort Coach Adam Noosa Red - Under 14 Boys Noosa Red made it three wins on the trot with a convincing win over Maroochydore Roos on Sunday. The Tigers made a great start and dominated the first half. They kept the Roos scoreless, piling on eight unanswered goals. The third quarter was a disappointing one however the Tigers got

their game going again in the final quarter to run out 86 point winners 14.9.93 to 1.1.7. Captain Nick Cuthbertson dominated proceedings and was clearly best on ground. Jaxon Doeland played his best game of the year and provided a great target up forward, also laying some great tackles. Jago Roberts played up from the under 12's and was everywhere, kicking 3 goals and Torin Flanagan played a great game; relishing his time on the ball. The win keeps the Tigers on the brink of the final four with a tough game against Hinterland Glasshouse at home facing them this weekend. Youth Girls Report Noosa's Tigerettes made it two out of three last weekend with the second placed under 13 girls side starting the weekend with an ugly and fumble win over the 4th placed glasshouse on Friday night. Jemima Ward was the standout of the game playing four terrific quarters whilst Poppy Tindal, Sarah O'Connor and Lexie Ladd had an influence on the result. Our Under 15 Girls dominated their opponents for the most part at Landsborough on Sunday only to lose on the siren by 2 points. The Noosa girls kicked a staggering two goals and thirteen points with many easy chances missed throughout the entire game. Usual suspects Hannah Mckenzie and Mia Woodburn were outstanding for the Tigers whilst Lauren Vaughan and Emma Benjamin also had heaps of influence in the game. The Tiger under 17s beat the top side Coolum on Friday night in a fine team performance. India Maddin and Lauren Vaughan were just awesome for the Tigers with Haylee Beauclerc and Sari Abbott also great contributors. Well done to all girls and go tigers Cheers Pittsy ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

BADDY AND THE WHALE NOT A CHILDREN'S STORY BY PHIL JARRATT They might be from two different surfing generations, but Angourie locals David "Baddy" Treloar and Laurie Towner have a lot in common when it comes to charging hard and never pulling back. The evidence is there for all to see in the case of Laurie, most recently during the ginormous Cloudbreak swell event, when no one rode bigger or deeper. And for surfers of my generation, there is a bank of memories of Baddy in his 1970s heyday fearlessly dropping into bombs at the Bower, or getting spat out of monstrous caverns at The Point. So it should come as no surprise that when Laurie phones Baddy and tells him there's a 12-metre whale carcass floating into The Point with dozens of big Great Whites feeding off it, Baddy says: "Well, I've got a boat, let's go drag the bastard out to sea!" Environmental authorities are still debating about whether inshore whale carcasses pose a significant danger to surfers and swimmers, but for surfers who live in volatile waters such as Margaret River, WA, and the NSW coast south of Ballina, it's a no-brainer. As Baddy told the ABC: "If it goes onto the point, the place would be unsurfable for months. It's happened before when sinews from a decaying carcass wrapped around the rock ledges on the point." A spokesman for the Office of Environment and Heritage told the ABC it was illegal for the public to touch a dead whale. "Whale carcasses remain protected. People are advised not to touch dead or rotting carcasses." The ABC report continued: "Deputy unit commander for Marine Rescue IlukaYamba, Jeff Clout, said he would wait until the carcass was beached before making a decision. "The decision has been made to stand down, allow the carcass to drift in and once it's beached then we'll deal with it and dispose of it humanely," Mr Clout said. Believing that the whale was somewhat beyond humane gestures, Strike Force Treloar-Towner jumped into action. They got seaward of the whale and the chomping sharks, chucked the sand anchor around the tail flutes and the 16-foot fishing boat, its

They’re back! Remember you read it here first. VALE A TALL POPPY When news arrived of the death at 91 of Dr William McBride a week or so ago, I had just finished reading a long account of the brutal witch hunt that had brought down the brilliant and world famous Australian obstetrician and medical researcher more than 20 years ago. In the eyes of the esteemed investigative journalist the late Philip Knightley (who admittedly had gone to school with McBride and was a lifelong friend), Dr McBride's fall from grace was a classic case of the Aussie tall poppy syndrome, which rears its ugly head even in the halls of academe. But reading Knightley's long and complex examination of the flimsy evidence against

30hp engine groaning, slowly dragged the thing out to sea, 50 metres beyond the point where it would drift south. A band-aid in the scheme of things, but an effort that may well save the lives of surfers at one of Australia's best point breaks over the coming months. And with whale numbers increasing, it's a clear indication that the marine authorities have to get proactive about disposal at sea.

him, it is difficult to disagree. The New York Times obituary was fairly typical of major world media in its dismissal of a great man: "William McBride, who was among the first doctors to sound an alarm about

thalidomide, the sedative found to cause birth defects, but whose later career was marred by accusations of falsified research results and other misconduct, died on June 27 in Australia. "In the spring of 1961, at Crown Street Women's Hospital in Sydney, Australia, Dr McBride, an obstetrician, delivered a baby who had malformed arms and other problems. Within a few weeks he had delivered two more. In a letter published in the medical journal The Lancet that December, he noted that what seemed to connect the patients was a drug he had prescribed for morning sickness, thalidomide (known in Australia as Distaval). "Dr McBride was hailed as a hero. But after he set up a research organization, Foundation 41, with prize money he had received from a French institute for his role in the thalidomide matter, he was bedevilled by controversy." Indeed he was, but the punishment didn't seem to fit the crime. McBride, perhaps full of hubris, may have pursued Big Pharma too quickly with too little evidence on a couple of occasions, and, a doctor of his times, he may have agreed to perform caesarians that weren't essential. But this was a man who alerted the world to the dangers of a drug that afflicted more than 12,000 children around the world, a man who indirectly brought about a whole new approach to protecting life in utero. If you ever saw a thalidomide child all those years ago, as I did and many Australians did, you will remember Dr William McBride as a hero. A flawed human being, but a hero nonetheless. ●

COOLUM VET RIDES INTO TOP SPOT After a tough three days and 361km in the saddle the finish line at Maroochydore's Cotton Tree Park was a welcome sight for the more than 800 tired riders taking part in Velothon Sunshine Coast. There were stunning performances in all the categories but it was Sydney's Philip Taaffe and local rider Lucy Coldwell who took out the general classification. Second last year, Taaffe from the Manly Warringah club has gone one better, much to the delight of his three children supporting from the sidelines "I couldn't have hoped for a much better

outcome than that. Last year they gave me the yellow jersey for winning the Masters but this year to do it overall against the young guys, I am pretty happy for a 41 year old," he said. "When the young guys were telling me their legs were hurting I was pleasantly surprised because I don't train like them. My riding is not much more than my commute to work which gives me 40 minutes each way. Cycling is something I do among the rest of my life with the family and work but I am fortunate I am able to keep a good level of fitness."

The former middle distance runner came to cycling only five years ago when persistent injury forced him into retirement. In her day to day life as a vet at Coolum, former Scottish Commonwealth Games cycling representative, Lucy Coldwell takes care of the pets of the Sunshine Coast but over the weekend she been using surgical precision to carve out a stunning performance that kept the men in the peloton on their toes. "Being a local ride it is a bit special and I am really happy with how things have worked out this year, personally and for

the team 'Multisport Mecca'. It was great, winning the KOM, the Sprinters, Mixed Teams and taking out the overall GC, I can't complain about that," she said. "I will definitely be back. "It is important having events like this on the Sunshine Coast. This sort of event is a mini taste of what a tour is like and gets all the locals together and it showcases the region. It is winter but the weather here is perfect which is a lovely reason for people to come here on holiday." ●

MANGROVE JACK

FANTASTIC WEATHER’S FINE FOR A FISH WITH THE FAMILY! With some sensational weather last weekend, families were out in force enjoying all that the river has to offer. Good numbers of quality flathead have been right throughout the system. Soft plastics and small vibes have been very successful on the flatties. Drifting whole fish baits like frog mouth pilchards is also another proven method. Large numbers of bream have made their way into the Sunshine Coast Rivers in readiness to spawn. Pieces of fresh mullet flesh have been the best bait with some larger fish coming from the river mouth. Tailor have also been caught in the river and surface Poppers and walker a great way to target them. Another thing to keep in mind is upping your leader size to avoid losing too many lures to bite offs. Good fish to 50cm have come from Woods Bay and the Frying Pan areas. Golden trevally have been feeding around the mouth, lower estuary and Woods Bay areas. Paddle tail soft plastics and micro jigs have worked well using the double hop method. These fish will quiet often pick up the lure on the fall noosatoday.com.au

so make sure you stay in close contact with your lure. The beaches have also been a great place for families over the weekend, with many angler making the trek up the Noosa North Shore in search of the mighty tailor. Looking for a good gutter is all important along with a high tide. Larger fish are been caught in the evening but there is still plenty of fish taken throughout the day. Most angler are using the good old whole pilchard on three ganged hooks, if the fish are in good numbers casting metal slug and Micro Jigs has also worked well. For those of you not able to make the pilgrimage up to the North Shore, tailor are also being caught from the gutters at Sunshine and Peregian beaches. Sharing the gutters with the tailor have been dart, bream and flathead. Mullet fillet and prawns have also been effective baits. The offshore action has been pretty good over the last week with good numbers of fish coming from North Reef, grassy sweet lip, cobia, pearl perch, quality snapper,

venus tusk fish and scarlet sea perch are just a few of the quality reef fish on offer . Constant burley trails using frozen block pillies cubed up and tuna oil have been the best technique in getting the bigger snapper and cobia sticking round the boat. Large strip baits like mullet fillet or bonito fillet have been working well for reefies as well as whole large squid baits on paternoster rigs. Lightly weighted whole pilchards floating down the burley trail producing the bigger snapper. Sunshine reef has also been firing with snapper, pearlies and quality jew. Early morning and late evening has been the best time to plan your attack if you are fishing Jew Shoal, some nice pan sized snapper and sweetlip have come from the bottom while the odd Mackeral and tuna have been hitting bait on the surface. For those that did the steam out to the Barwon Banks, larger snapper, pearl perch, cobia, amber jack and jewies were on offer. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
