Association of Victoria’s Tiny House subcommittee, said tiny houses were ideal for “people who want to minimise their footprint, live within their means and not have so much housework“. She said they suited a range of people at different stages of their lives including retirees, single older women as well as young people. “I can definitely see people installing tiny houses on their parents’ properties for instance,“ she said. “Many of them are off the grid with solar panels, composting toilets and water tanks.“ Cr Stapledon said she had seen tiny houses with roof gardens, beds that raise up to ceiling to create extra living space and compact kitchens with all mod cons. In the US some tiny houses even have pot belly heaters and decks. And they don’t necessarily have to be on wheels. “As a council we are exploring ways in which we can help people enter the housing market this way, whilst still maintaining community expectations when it comes to housing,“ Cr Stapledon said. She said the MAV group was working towards a definition of tiny houses. “The group recognises that tiny houses do not align comfortably with current legislation and are working towards a solution to the issue. “We’re also looking to involve the State Government to see how we can make these changes positive and possible. “I want young people to feel they can buy into the market and don’t have to move out

That they can live well and have a good quality of life.“ There is already a community of tiny houses operated by the Department of Human Services in Doveton which are being used as transitional housing for people facing homelessness. “It excites me that if we go small we can provide more housing and give people what they need,“ Cr Stapledon said. “If you think about how people live in the city, this is no different. You can still live well and have a small (environmental) footprint.“ Tiny house devotee Fred Schultz is one of a handful of innovators operating tiny house construction businesses in Victoria. Mr Schultz said a tiny house on wheels can cost as little as $3000 using recycled materials, or up to $30,000 using highquality new materials. He said other groups that could benefit from tiny house living included older people wanting to downsize but stay close to family, investors wanting to offer short and long-term rentals and teenagers who want to reside a comfortable distance from the family home. “Local governments and people all around Australia are starting to see tiny houses as a great housing solution for different times in life,“ Mr Schultz said. “Whether you’re entering the market of looking to simplify your life, tiny houses can tick a lot of boxes for people.“
