SPECIAL PROMOTION

‘Showcase’ of enterprise By Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia

Malcolm Turnbull during a tour of Geelong’s Carbon Revolution factory.

The Geelong Business Excellence Awards are a showcase of the region’s ingenuity and enterprise. Every day, across the greater Geelong region thousands of businesses are investing, employing, growing and succeeding. It is wonderful to see this hard work and excellence being encouraged and recognised. That’s what these awards are all about, and that’s what motivates your Federal Government’s plan for a stronger economy and more jobs. I understand the sacrifice it takes to build a successful enterprise. It’s an all-consuming task, but it is so important to the prosperity of our nation.

Small and medium businesses are the backbone of our economy. They employ millions of people and keep our economy powering forward. That’s why everything my government does is designed to support and encourage you. We believe in lower taxes. We are providing tax relief for almost 8000 businesses in the region. We have extended the $20 000 instant asset write-off so businesses can buy equipment and upgrade. And of course, we are lowering income taxes for more than 125,000 workers across greater Geelong and Corangamite so they keep more of the money they earn. All of this will work together with our Geelong City Deal, which is focused on building a stronger economy with more jobs. Conges-

tion-busting infrastructure projects such as fixing local rail services, duplicating the Princes Highway and upgrading the Great Ocean Road are making a real difference. Our hard-working Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, is continuing to fight for the greater Geelong region and in all corners of the Corangamite electorate. And we will continue to back the thousands of businesses like the ones recognised here tonight. The talent on display in the Geelong Business Excellence Awards represents the very best of Australia. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your continued effort to create more jobs. We will always back small business and together we will build a stronger economy.

Celebrate our local success By Daniel Andrews, Premier Of Victoria On behalf of the Victorian Government, I am pleased to support the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. For more than 30 years the awards have celebrated the many accomplishments of Geelong’s businesses and showcased Geelong’s many success stories. As Victoria’s second-largest city, Geelong contributes so much to our economy and so much to our state. Key to those contributions is the many businesses that call Daniel Andrews Geelong home.

The chamber of commerce team behind the business awards: Kim Velvardy, Kelli Finlayson and Alex Hamilton 183008.

(Louisa Jones)

Awards promote local business excellence By Mark Edmonds, Geelong Chamber Of Commerce president It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the winners of the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. Since 1986 the awards have played a key role in promoting and encouraging business excellence, showcasing our region’s best and brightest. Many winners and finalists have gone on to achieve state and national acclaim. Each year the level of participation by the business community has grown, with the bar

of excellence shifting ever upward. This year we entered into a major partnership with Deakin University as naming-rights sponsor. I thank Deakin for its commitment to supporting the Geelong business community, enabling the chamber of commerce to deliver Geelong’s most prestigious and premier business awards. I also acknowledge and thank the chamber’s event partners, award and major media partners, and all category sponsors. Without them the awards would not be possible. I extend special thanks to the judging pan-

el, once again ably led by chair Simon Flowers. Their voluntary time and commitment ensure that the awards continue to reflect the rigorous standards of business excellence and the robust competition for which they have become synonymous. Finally, I congratulate all this year’s entrants and finalists, whom I wish all the very best. They can be proud of their achievements, and I trust that the awards experience will inspire them to continue pursuing their journeys of excellence.

Recognising that enterprise, our government is proud to back those local businesses and give them the confidence they need to grow and invest even further. That includes opening a new dedicated office for Geelong businesses, giving them the opportunity to bid on - and win - important government contracts. Those same businesses will benefit from our further cuts to regional payroll tax. Now just half the metro rate, it means regional Victoria has the lowest rate anywhere in Australia. And through our massive investments in infrastructure - building and upgrading local schools, hospitals, roads and public transport - we’re making sure it’s local residents who benefit. Because we’re not just building local - we’re buying and hiring local too. We’ve made these commitments because just as you do - we back local businesses and we back local jobs. Our Government is proud to support the Geelong Business Excellence Awards - and we’ll always be proud to support Geelong.

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Supatramp overall winner Category: Business of the Year Hospitality and Tourism Winner: Supatramp

Supatramp has won the biggest prize at the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. The indoor activity centre won Business of the Year just three and a half years after opening at Grovedale. Supatramp scooped the top award at last night’s gala presentation dinner after earlier winning the category for Tourism and Hospitality. Supatramp was the brainchild of the Schwarz and Wright families, who had a desire to develop a successful business in Geelong. “Identifying the indoor entertainment industry as an emerging sector, we started with a blank sheet of paper and a dream,” the families explain in their awards entry. “From this, we built Geelong’s largest indoor entertainment complex - a $4.3 million state-of-the-art centre. “Safety was at the forefront of our venture, something lacking within many of our competitors, so we became founding members of the Australian Trampoline Parks Association (ATPA), a regulatory body that established safety standards within the industry.“ Supatramp describes itself as the first of its kind thanks to its wide variety of activities. “It’s true, we’re so much more than just a trampoline park. “We’ve now ... opened a second centre in Wodonga and we’ve just signed our first franchise.” Supatramp’s vision is to be the market leader in active, safe and innovative indoor family entertainment.

Troy McLean, Tim Berris, Courtney O'Neil, Mark Fountain and Hannah Charnock at Supatramp. Mark is also pictured on the cover between Supatramp owners David Schwarz and Neville Wright. The business has seven full-time employees and a 57 in part-time or casual roles. Supatramp attributes its competitive difference to “three key elements”: its premium

safety standards, diverse product offering and “exceptional” customer service. “Our goal is to expand our brand through franchising and corporate owned stores.

“We know that much of our success can be attributed to our dedicated team members and we’re incredibly proud of the culture we’ve created within our workplace.”

Rendine’s big 2018 Rendine Constructions has concluded an exciting year with its category win at the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. The success culminates a year of expansion and progression for the company. From transforming a worn out shed into a multi-storey, state-of-the-art headquarters to driving business information modelling and moving into the world of manufacturing modular buildings, the company is benchmarking the future of construction in Geelong. Rendine’s vision to create, build and manage “extraordinary construction” has successfully directed the business across four decades and two generations of Mills family ownership.

Category: Advanced Manufacturing & Industry Winner: Rendine Constructions

This vision has further driven the diversification of Rendine's experienced personnel with a repertoire of building services including project feasibility, design, engineering, civil and commercial construction, modular building and maintenance services. “We understand construction. We can deliver a great finish on any job,” says managing director Greg Mills. “But our clients don’t simply want a great

finish. They want someone who can manage the process for them, who can anticipate their needs. “We engage with our clients so that we may understand their objectives and work with them to ensure those objectives are delivered in the best and smoothest way possible. Providing solutions to both their current and future requirements our clients can attend to their daily business activities, knowing that someone they trust is ensuring their needs are being delivered.” Rendine is now delivering first-class constructions throughout Victoria for government and private sector clients operating across a host of industries.

Gforce Employment Solutions chief Rob Birch says 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards finalists owe much of their success to having “the right team members“. Rob aligns his business philosophy with entrepreneur Richard Branson, who said: “Success in business is all about people, people, people. Your team is your biggest competitive advantage“. Like Branson, Gforce recognises that people drive success, which is why its motto is ’MatchRob ing businesses with Birch the best people’. For over 35 years Gforce's industry experts have provided businesses with quality apprentices, trainees, temporary and permanent staff. Recently Gforce expanded to provide disability employment services under the name EGF Solutions. EGF Solutions helps people of all abilities discover talents, harness strengths and find rewarding, long-term employment. “We're proud EGF Solutions is part of the Gforce Group and that we’re helping make business more inclusive. Inclusiveness is one way to improve business success,” Rob says. “The Diversity Council Australia’s Inclusion@Work Index 2017/2018 report found that employees in inclusive work teams were 19 times more likely to be very satisfied with their job compared to employees in non-inclusive workplaces, 10 times more likely to be highly effective in the workplace, and nine times more likely to innovate. “Gforce is proud to recognise business success by sponsoring the Regional Business category of the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards. We congratulate all award entrants, finalists and winners.”

$60m promised for jobs in city nursing By Christine Couzens, Member For Geelong Talk to anyone born in Geelong before the mid-1990s and odds are they were born in Baxter House. Baxter House was part of the Geelong Hospital and is the building on the south-west corner of Ryrie Street and Bellerine St. Geelong Private Hospital was on this site from the mid1990s until last month when it closed with only a few weeks’ notice. Up until then, Geelong had three private hospitals and one public hospital. In 2010 the previous Liberal government had promised a second public hospital for Geelong, to be built south of the river. However, this did not occur. Instead, the Private Epworth Hospital was built at Deakin University, Waurn Ponds. The Geelong region was unable to sustain three large private hospitals, which led to the closure of Ryrie St’s Geelong Private. The Andrews Government immediately invested $10 million to identify options to transform that site into a women’s and children’s hospital for Geelong. The study is looking at options to deliver additional maternity and paediatric services for Geelong families, as well as more inpatient beds, delivery rooms, operating theatres and clinics for the growing community. Located in a former RSS Woolen Mill building on Rutland St, Boom accommodates exhibition spaces, a design gallery, an art stockroom and a cafe. “The aim of the gallery is to exhibit the highest standard of contemporary art and design in a space that is dynamic and exciting,” says Boom’s awards entry. “We aim to actively engage people with the arts practice of artists, designers and makers from our region and across Australia.” The business has established a “community of creatives” with its affordable, accessible and

Steph Brown’s hair studio was a finalist in the two categories of the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards. Finishing among the Emerging Business and Retail Business finalists was a significant achievement for Brown & Co Hair Studio after opening just two and a half years ago. “Brown & Co’s mission is to deliver a tailored, luxurious experience to each and every client,” writes Steph in her awards entry. “My business is the only hair salon in Geelong that uses luxury Aveda products, a natural, cruelty-free, organic haircare range.” With 17 years’ experience in hairdressing, Steph describes herself passionate about helping clients achieve “great hair” in a “relaxed

and welcoming environment”. “As a result, my customers remain intensely loyal, travelling as far as from interstate and overseas to have their hair done at Brown & Co,” she says. Steph was thrust into the world of small business when a day spa where she worked as a hairdresser closed suddenly six weeks before Christmas in 2015. Within 48 hours she had a plan to take care of the spa’s 200 hairdressing clients. “Within a week and with no prior business experience I had signed a lease, reinstated all of the clients, transformed the salon and opened the doors as Brown & Co,” she says.

Haze entertainers 'a family' Haze Music was a finalist in the Regional Business and Customer Service categories of the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. Established in 1977, Haze is a consultancy and booking agency providing “quality entertainment for every occasion”. Tamara Andrews has solely owned and managed the business since April 2014 but attributes much of Haze’s success to the loyalty of the performers, many whom have been with the agency for over 30 years. “This one-man band is a family,” writes Tamara in her awards entry, “so when describing the business I prefer to use the term, ‘We’.” Haze Music provides professional entertainers for events of “all shapes and sizes”. The line-up covers everything from soloists, cover bands and classical ensembles through

to DJs, comedians and magicians. “Our ultimate aim is to see the performers of Geelong working by creating opportunities, providing outstanding service and having a commitment to quality, integrity & consistency,” Tamara says. Tamara is happy to spend hours sourcing the ideal performer, which she considers “worth every second when a happy outcome is achieved for all concerned”. “We’re quiet achievers,” she says. “For us, it’s not about being the biggest and making the most money. Health clinic in four finals

HR fit for all HR4Business was a finalist in the Customer Service and Home Based and Micro Business categories of the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards. HR4Business specialises in the delivery of tailored human resource management solutions, says the company’s awards entry. The business’s clients range across many industries and sectors in small, medium and large organisations. HR4Business has been servicing clients around Geelong and regional Victoria for nine years after principal consultant Sue Kelly identified a market for professional human resource management consulting services. “The service delivery model is flexible and the company’s unique organisational framework enables it to support small, medium businesses with little or no HR infrastructure as well as tailoring its services to complement existing HR teams within larger organisations,” the awards entry says. “Key areas of service delivery are HR consulting and compliance auditing, industrial relations, mediation and investigation, HR project management, and recruitment, payroll services, outplacement, OHS support and training and development. The basis of engagement with clients may varies including On Demand, Set Fee or Retainer basis. “Our point of difference is that HR4Business is the only business of its type on the landscape in Geelong. At HR4Business, we partner with our clients with the aim of developing a long-term relationship, be it now or in the future, even where the service requirements are one-off in the first instance.”

Pritchard Health was a finalist in four categories of the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards. Geelong’s first nurse-led mental health clinic placed in the categories for Emerging Business, Accessible Business, Clever and Creative Sustainable Business, and Health and Wellbeing. Founded and run by nurse practitioner Sian Pritchard, the business opened its doors in May 2017 to address the “growing need for quality mental health care in our community”. With a Masters Degree in Nursing from Deakin University, Sian’s qualification as a nurse practitioner places her at the highest level of the Australian nursing hierarchy. She can independently diagnose and treat health conditions, order and interpret blood and radiology tests, and prescribe medications or refer to specialists. Clients can be seen without a referral, enabling accessible, timely and affordable treatment. The clinic has a number of mental health nurses with postgraduate degrees across a range of specialist disciplines as well as a psychologist. “This allows us to work across individual and family therapy, eating disorder management, perinatal infant mental health, psychotherapy, clinical hypnotherapy and substance abuse treatment,” Sian says in her awards entry. Pritchard Health also provides outreach services to the community in homes, schools and through other organisations such as the Geelong Withdrawal Unit. “We work with GPs and other external practitioners to extend our range of services,” Sian says. “Nurses are unique. They are educated in the physiological, psychological, social and spiritual elements of health and wellbeing. “We fill a gap as specialists in providing a mental health service from birth to death.”

Keeping people safe drives Essential Property Solutions managing director Louise Doedee. “We help minimise the risks for commercial property owners, protect their building asset and help make sure the occupants are safe,” she says. A finalist in the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence awards’ Home Based & Micro Business and Customer Service categories, Essential Property Solutions assists owners and managers with compliance and essential safety measures (ESMs). “Under the building regulations ESMs apply to all commercial buildings,” Louise explains. “All these buildings have safety elements and equipment.” ESMs cover items including fire equipment and emergency exit lighting to protect occupants’ safety. “All those things need to be tested and inspected regularly,” Louise says. Some aspects, like fire extinguishers, are obvious but others are less visible. Up to 99 per cent of owners are unaware of their mandatory obligations under the regulations, Louise estimates. “We provide services that help make essential safety measures compliance easier.” Essential Property Solutions provides quarterly egress inspections and arranges other inspections and testing to protect owners from hefty fines for non-compliance.

Janina Lear has been a market-lover her whole life, from childhood memories searching for fresh produce at Red Hill to her European adventures. She established Piccadilly Market 10 years ago after moving to Newtown. “I didn’t see anything in Geelong when I moved here,” she says. The market offers artisnal homewares, clothing, candles, jewellery, gourmet foods and more. “I have far more applications then I have spots for stalls,” Janina says. This year she’s giving three local musicians and a young entrepreneur a chance to show off their talents. “I’m paying them but they’re also busking. I’m offering a half-price stall to a young entrepreneur.” Janina’s 12-year-old twins have used the market to sell their Glitter Queen wares. “They’ve got big opportunities because their mum owns this business,” Janina laughs. “I just thought I could offer this opportunity to some kids that don’t have that platform.“ Piccadilly Market was a finalist in the categories for Tourism & Hospitality and Clever & Sustainable Business at the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards after also reaching the finals in 2017.

The team at The Bungalow are excited about their early success.

Diners move to Bungalow Drysdale’s The Bungalow Restaurant was a finalist in the Tourism and Hospitality category of the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards. The restaurant’s name was an easy choice for owners Kerry and Simon Bell as they converted a 1932 Californian bungalow to accommodate their new venue. The pair discovered an interesting history to the former home as they prepared its revitalisation. “When we found out that the original residents made food for the community, and were foodies like us, it made perfect sense to name it The Bungalow’.” Kerry writes in her business awards entry. The original residents, Alfred and Elsie Butcher, built the bungalow for £458, 12 shillings in 1932, according to Kerry and Simon’s research.

“In 1941 Elsie began providing meals for soldiers who were stationed at the Drysdale reserve, prior to their posting overseas during World War II,” the pair explain. “According to records, all 105 soldiers would wander up to Elsie’s for a delicious home-cooked meal shared with their fellow comrades.” The heart-warming kindness and community spirit has inspired Kerry and Simon’s passion for the food they prepare and serve at The Bungalow. “Through our customer service, employee talent and consistent and predictable growth we will be the best restaurant in Drysdale,” they says. “We will understand and satisfy our guests through our delicious food, products, friendly service and commitment to our local community.”

Established in 2004, Annie’s has become a renowned and highly respected brand due to the high level of customer service and extensive gourmet food lines on offer. “Annie’s is the go-to cafe for locals, visitors and foodies … looking for that complete dining and entertaining experience,” writes owner Andrea Orchard in the store’s awards entry. “Serving authentic Italian coffee and French pastries, along with our unique ambiance, is what makes Annie’s stand out from the rest. The business now expanded into other ventures including Annie’s Kitchen, Catering and Events, in 2014 and Annie’s Italy Venetian Food and Wine Tours, in 2016.

D and C Studio was a finalist in the Emerging Business and Home Based and Micro Business categories at the 2018 Geelong Business Excellence Awards. D and C Studio is an agency “born from a passion to create exceptional brands through leading edge graphic design”, writes director and founder Kate Dewey in her awards entry. “We are dedicated to a single purpose: helping business owners to achieve their dreams in business,” Kate says. “Through gaining a deep understanding of our clients business and uncovering their unique personality and values, we design a brand so it authentically captures their essence and greater purpose, designing the brands of tomorrow for the businesses of today.” Kate has long had a “burning passion” to help others achieve their business dreams. The business is distinguished by its industry-leading accommodation, Accessible Stays, which owner Christine Smith says provides “exceptional facilities and service” for clients at all levels of mobility and ability. “The business is not disability-specific but operates as mainstream tourism service that’s fully inclusive,” she explains. Christine says the initial impetus for the business was her experience of living with permanent hearing loss and facial paralysis, an acquired disability. Christine launched her business in a market of increasing competition among emerging booking services. She noted a deficiency in disability services, turning it into a market opportunity through the creation of “innovative, well-designed,

Indy backing in print, online more opportunities for the people of the Geelong region.” Part of Victoria’s family-owned Star News Group, the Indy is regional Victoria’s highestcirculating community newspaper with a massive network of home deliveries and pick-up points. The paper’s fast-growing E-paper subscriber base and active online presence means the Indy has the whole region and beyond covered for Geelong news and advertising. Each print edition combines with regular Indy website updates and social media posts to reach one of the region’s biggest local media audiences. “If you need local advertising, the Indy has you covered,” Mr Galpin says.

Geelong’s community newspaper is celebrating its second year of sponsoring the city’s premier business awards. The Geelong Indy signed on as print sponsor last year, with the Geelong Business Excellence Awards subsequently tripling nominations and hosting its biggest presentation night ever. This year was another success after the Indy used its massive print and digital reach to promote the awards again. “We’re rapt to play a part in promoting the biggest night on the local business calendar,” says Indy managing director Tony Galpin. “Local business is the backbone of our community, providing jobs, prosperity, self-esteem and security. Vitality Laser & Skin Clinic is the latest evolution of iconic Geelong beauty business Vitality Medispa. Twenty years ago owner Annette Harman set out to build a highly successful business that could provide a wonderful lifestyle for her family. She wanted the business to also offer a pathway for young therapists to grow within the industry while providing clients with a beauty sanctuary that achieved outstanding results. Annette’s confident that her vision continues to be fulfilled, with her business growing into the largest and most-awarded aesthetic service provider in the region. Annette and the Vitality name are both synonymous with the beauty industry, not only locally but throughout Australia. With over 20 years of trading in the Geelong region, the multi-award-winning clinic proudly serves the region with an array of beauty services including cutting-edge laser and advanced skin-rejuvenation treatments. The clinic’s recent change of name coincided with a move to a larger, purpose-built facility with nine rooms at Leopold. The changes have allowed Vitality Laser & Skin Clinic to meet increasing demand for high-quality aesthetic services and to accom-

They come from all age groups, men and women.”

Traders welcomed the official opening of WorkSafe’s headquarters yesterday as more than 500 employees previously working in Melbourne relocated to Geelong. The relocation could “only be a good thing for Geelong CBD”, cafe owner Damian Rabbas said. “It’s a positive for traders and we certainly have had a few new faces in today.” More than 700 people now work at the headquarters, with about 200 Geelong-based employees moving there in May. But Mr Rabbas wished State Government had begun the move “five years ago” to help revive central Geelong. “They’re behind where they should have been,” he said. Geelong barber Vince Manganelli was equally thrilled with the opening. “I think it will be fantastic for Geelong,” he said. Barwon Water has 110 years’ experience in providing excellence in water and sewerage services, and now has another honour to its name. The statutory corporation won the Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards’ sustainability category for its “ambitious” Strategy 2030. “Strategy 2030 comes from understanding our region is facing significant changes through population growth, climate change and economic transition,“ says Tracey Slatter, Barwon Water’s managing director. “We care about the impact of these changes so are shifting our mindset from being just a water utility to becoming an enabler of regional prosperity.” Barwon Water is focusing on five key areas: business-community partnerships, entrepreneurial mindset, zero emissions, zero waste, and a high-performing workforce. “All initiatives have the underlying objectives of putting downward pressure on customer bills, improving services and increasing value,” Ms Slatter says. “As Victoria’s largest regional urban water corporation, we are committed to helping our region prosper economically, environmentally, socially and culturally.“ Barwon Water services 300,000 people every day, and 500,000 during peak periods. “With $200 million annual turnover, we have $3 billion in assets and spend $100 million annually on capital infrastructure,” Ms Slatter says. Barwon Water employs more than 300 highly-skilled workers from a diverse range of disciplines. “Our expenditure in the region sustains an estimated additional 120 jobs,” Ms Slatter says.

Three men face charges for child sex offences and supplying drugs to children following a two-month investigation and police raids in Geelong and Winchelsea. Geelong police executed a number of warrants at residential properties in Geelong, Herne Hill and Winchelsea around 7am on Wednesday as part of Operation Epicycle. IN BRIEF

Gaol parking boost By Luke Voogt Old Geelong Gaol’s new owner has unveiled a 130-space car park for the site after purchasing it from council for $1.5 million. Montgomery International yesterday unveiled plans to the Indy to resurface part of the heritage-listed gaol for commercial parking. “Obviously, being next to Geelong’s largest hospital there's a strain on parking in the area,” said company owner Dean Montgomery. “I've worked out I could fit around 130 car spaces in if we resurface the entire car parking area and appropriately line-mark the spaces with numbers on the bitumen surface.” Mr Montgomery also shared plans for an interactive museum based on the gaol’s history, operating daily except Christmas Day and Good Friday. “By using around 35 per cent of the total site area for the museum we can create a dynamic, full-time, major tourist attraction for visitors to Geelong,” he said.

An audio tour guide system would escort visitors through the notorious prison’s history, Mr Montgomery said. Ghost tours and escape rooms would continue at the gaol to test visitors’ nerves and cunning, he added. Montgomery International agreed to undertake almost $1.6 million in maintenance over the next three years, including works to preserve the gaol’s turret and roof. “We'd remove some of the more-modern fittings to provide that authentic experience,” Mr Montgomery said. The sale will allow Rotary International and Lazarus Community Centre to remain as tenants until 2020 and 2022 respectively. Lazarus provides support to homeless and isolated people in Geelong. The gaol housed some of Victoria’s most notorious prisoners from 1853 until its closure in 1991. Council has owned it since 1994. Mr Montgomery said he was committed to

following council’s and Heritage Victoria’s recommendations to preserve the gaol’s history. “I’m a great lover of heritage buildings." Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood welcomed Mr Montgomery’s vision for the gaol. “The sale also releases some pressure on our budget as the gaol has been a very expensive property to retain,” he said. The sale followed Geelong’s former stateappointed administrators’ failed attempt to sell the gaol to Barwon Health in 2016. Council approved the sale at its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday while also voting to keep North Geelong's historic Osborne House in public hands. Council would develop a master plan including the lease of part of the land surrounding the historic house, councillor Eddy Kontelj said. The site could host exhibitions, small-tomedium conferences and performances, and house businesses and retail outlets, he said.

Blaze survivor A woman in her 20s is recovering at The Alfred Hospital after suffering burns in a Grovedale house fire on Tuesday. Police believed that a candle could have started the fire, which left the woman in a critical but stable condition yesterday.

Toddler injured A toddler is recovering in hospital after a multicar crash near the intersection of Moorabool and Malop Sts, Geelong, on Wednesday. An ambulance took the boy to University Hospital Geelong with back injuries as well as a woman in her 20s for assessment.

Bomber bailed A man is on bail following a bomb scare during a raid at his home in Mark St, Lara, last Friday. Joshua Norton, 26, appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court after police charged him with possessing an explosive device and drugs and firearm offences.

Blues benevolence Almost 800 donors have raised more than $70,000 for prominent Clifton Springs blues singer and songwriter Chris Wilson as he battles pancreatic cancer. A fundraising page at gofundme.com/ chris-wilson-and-family passed the mark yesterday morning, a day after going live.

Tools targeted Thieves are swiping a “significant numbers” of tools form work sites, sheds and vehicles across the Geelong region, police have warned. Investigators recorded 44 thefts involving 91 tools including chainsaws, drills, angle grinders and circular saws from 1 June to 16 July, police revealed this week.

Storages rising The region’s water storages have continued rising after another week of rain in catchment areas, according to official measurements. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 53.7 per cent of capacity on Wednesday, up more than 1.1 billion litres after 32mm of rain over the previous seven days.

Boof's barking mad about GPS challenge By Luke Voogt Winchelsea working dog Boof loves nothing more than cuddles, playing and lying by the fireplace after a ruff day's work. And the canny canine earns his downtime, working 11 to 16 hours, six days a week, according to human mate Henry Lawrence. "He's more a pet than a work dog even though he's flat out most of the time," Henry said. "He's got a bed next to the fire that he sleeps in - he knows that's where he's allowed."

The dogged kelpie will test his speed and stamina against 12 pooches across Australia in the Cobber Challenge, donning a GPS for three weeks in August. "I'm pretty keen to see how Boof compares to the competition and how far he travels every day. We don't really have time to go off to trials," Henry said Statisticians would monitor GPS data for farmers gaining mileage by "riding up and down the paddock" on quad bikes with their dog, he added.

Five-year-old Boof, Henry's eldest working dog, was "excellent with kids" despite being tough and tenacious, he said. But past injuries including a broken front leg from jumping off a buggy and a broken pelvis from being run over had slowed Boof down a little. "He takes a fair hit and keeps going," Henry marvelled. He even copped a kangaroo bite, which caused a spine infection. "He's too ballsy for my liking sometimes," Henry said.

Warnings for AFL brawlers By Luke Voogt

LEGEND: Newcomb Football Club's Scott Smith with Rowan Klein.

Scott helping kids get kicks By Luke Voogt Scott Smith is the reason kids like Rowan Klein play mainstream football with their mates at Newcomb, according to grateful mum Sarah. “Scott is a huge part of our club,” she said. “The football community all know how much effort he puts into making the club the family-friendly, inclusive environment that it is today.” Sarah nominated Newcomb Football Club’s junior coordinator for Geelong’s Club Legend Award, much to his surprise. “I’m just stoked,” the 47-year-old St Albans Park local told the Indy on Wednesday. “I love what I do.” Scott met Rowan, who has Down syndrome, at a school clinic and convinced Sarah to sign him up for Auskick despite her initial nervousness.

“There was no program for him to play mainstream AFL with his brothers,” Scott said. “Rowie’s older brothers were playing at the club, so why couldn't he?” Scott devised a strategy for Rowan to play under-9s with a helper, usually mum. Now Scott's discussing with AFL Victoria how to get more kids with mental disabilities playing footy. A Newcomb player in the ‘80s, Scott returned seven years ago to coordinate the juniors. “We only had 20 then, now we’ve got 180,” he said. “It just ties together the whole community.” Scott is in the running to win a share of $50,000 in prizes for himself and the club in Viva Energy’s Club Legend Award. Nominations close at clublegend.com.au next Friday.

Police will seek to lay charges against brawlers involved in a violent fight after the siren at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. “If you go to the footy to cause trouble you’ll be held to account and brought before the courts,” warned Geelong Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Hay. “What we are in the process of doing is getting statements from witnesses and people involved.” Snr Sgt Hay said police would prosecute anyone who committed an offence during the brawl, the second at GMHBA Stadium this year. “On the face of it” offences had occurred during Saturday’s melee, he added. Phone footage emerged of the violent brawl which occurred seconds after Zac Tuohy kicked the match-winning goal against the Demons on Saturday night. The footage shows a man in Geelong colours stomping a Melbourne supporter while he was on ground. “We’ve seen some vision in relation to it,” Snr Sgt Hay said. “That person will be spoken to.” The melee lasted roughly 45 seconds before other crowd members broke it up. A man involved in the brawl contacted a Melbourne police station this week. Snr Sgt Hay urged anyone else involved in the fight to “get on the front foot and tell police your side of the story“.

“Come forward rather than have us knock on the front door.“ Investigators from Geelong Crime Investigation Unit would review additional phone footage and CCTV footage from the stadium, Snr Sgt Hay said. He urged witnesses who saw or filmed the brawl to phone Geelong Police Station on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Snr Sgt Hay slammed the disgraceful behaviour. “Violence is not acceptable whether it’s at home, in the street or at the footy,” he said. “People have a right to go to the footy without being involved in acts of violence and, just as importantly, having to witness acts of violence. “It can be just as bad for mums, dads and kids at the footy to have to see that go on.“ Police were meeting with Kardinia Park Stadium Trust to discuss options to make the ground safer, Snr Sgt Hay said. The trust’s chief executive officer Michael Brown said a small minority brawling marred the game for other spectators. “The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust is extremely disappointed with the behaviour from a small section of patrons at last night’s game.” “We will continue to work with the Victorian Police, AFL and both clubs to investigate the incident.” The brawl follows a glassing in the Stella Artois Lounge at the ground on 26 May which left a man bloodied and injured.

Ferry dreams for Christmas

Norlane’s Lindy Joy Crouch will be the first Australian with Down syndrome to compete at a world taekwondo tournament next week. “I want to do well and have Geelong be proud of me,” the avid Cats supporter and Tom Hawkins fan told the Indy “I want other people with disabilities to be able to enjoy taekwondo. I can do it - that’s my line!” Lindy flies to Argentina today to compete in the ITF World Championship after just 18 months learning the martial art. “I am a superstar and I love that my family is proud of me,” she said. She has already gold in a state tournament and was happy but nervous to compete in Argentina. “I am hoping to win a medal or trophy, but there will be lots people trying to win them,” she said. But while Lindy goes hard in the ring, she loves the mateship of the sport. “I like to be nice to everyone, I like it when people get on well with other and there is no fighting,” she said. Lindy survived heart surgery as a baby before the Crouch family adopted her. “It’s the first time I’ve taken her on such an adventure,” said proud mother Jayne. “We think Lindy will be a great ambassador for people with disabilities and Geelong.” A bubbly, outgoing and happy soul, Lindy had eaten healthy and attended both the gym and taekwondo twice a week in preparation, Jayne said. “She’s really quite determined and stubborn. I think she’s done quite amazing but I’m her mother, not a world judge.”

A regularly ferry between Melbourne and Geelong could be running in time for the holiday season, according to its operators. “We’d like to see, certainly by Christmas, to have some sort of a service up and running,” said Port Phillip Ferries chief Murracy Rance after a trial run on Tuesday. “There (are) thousands of people that commute from Geelong to Melbourne, Melbourne to Geelong. “We don’t want all of them, we just want 400 a day.” But the service attracted below Mr Rance's target during the free trial in windy, wintery conditions this week. More than 150 people embarked on the Bellarine Express’s maiden voyage to Docklands at 6.15am, which arrived in Melbourne five minutes early at 7.55am. Almost 200 travelled to Geelong at 8.30am on the vessel, with about 300 seats available for each service during the free trial. About the same number of passengers travelled back to Melbourne and Geelong on respective return services that afternoon. Reducing the time of the 100-minute commute would be important for the service’s viability, Mr Rance said. “There is a number of things that we can do that we can pinch six or seven or eight minutes. “If we can get it down to below 100 minutes we think it’s a real competitive alternate transport source.” The vessel has a capacity of 400 passengers, with about 320 seats indoors and the rest on the boat’s outdoor decks. Port Phillip Ferries will run a second free trial next Tueday. Passengers can book a free ticket for the trial at Port Phillip Ferries’ website, with the company to collect a gold coin donation from passengers for a local charity.

Old building ‘threat to safety of public’ Fears over the stability of a heritage-listed building have forced police to close part of central Geelong. Police taped off Belcher’s Corner at the intersection of Moorabool and Ryrie Sts on Tuesday morning amid concerns for public safety. The builder’s owners established a temporary exclusion zone at the site as a “precaution“, according to City Hall. Vicroads and Geelong’s council closed eastbound lanes on Ryrie St, north-bound lanes on Moorabool St and footpaths near the building. “We acknowledge this exclusion zone will cause some temporary disruption to traffic and commercial activity in the heart of Geelong,” council’s planning director Joanne Van Slageren said. “But public safety is our number one concern.” Council building services and emergency management staff were consulting with the owners of Belcher’s Corner as builders completed renovations in its basement, Ms Van Slageren said. “We’re consulting closely with other agencies and the owners of Belcher’s Corner to ensure the area surrounding the building is safe, until all necessary basement works are satisfactorily completed.” City Hall had advised Public Transport Victoria of possible impacts to bus services, Ms Van Slageren said. The safety concerns resulted from severe concrete cancer in the pillars of the building. Council has confirmed a member of the public had raised concerns about the build-

An alleged stalker who wrote sexually explicit letters and made inappropriate phone calls to Surf Coast businesses could be in Anglesea, police have warned. Police released security camera images of a man on Sunday as they worked to track down the alleged offender. Detectives were investigating a series of inappropriate letters and phone calls in Coburg, Torquay and Essendon, police confirmed. Various businesses had received the handwritten letters since January, police said. The offender recently made inappropriate calls to female co-workers from pay phones in Melbourne and on the Surf Coast, police alleged. “Investigators have released images and CCTV of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.“

Call an optometrist - Geelong’s suffering double vision! That’s Double Take’s diagnosis after a lobby group this week unveiled plans for a “united vision” of Geelong’s future. Committee for Geelong’s “proposed second city policy framework” outlined “practical and tangible changes” to make Geelong “world-class”. A “widely recognised city brand” and an “innovation fund” for emerging industries were among the big ideas, the development of which apparently required four years of work and travel. But how many visions does a city need? After all, only last year City Hall unveiled its 30-year Our Future vision following months of consultations and over $500,000 in expenditures. And let’s not forget that local councils alliance body G21 has an “agreed vision” for the region until 2050, with alternative priorities and plans. Seems like Geelong has more visions than a cult guru on magic mushrooms. However, and unlike the experience of some gurus, visions fade with time. For instance, the committee’s new vision follows an earlier 2011 version. And that was Vision 2, which obviously followed Vision 1. The committee was established in 2001 and is already up to vision three, so that’s a vision every 5.7 years on average. And considering that work on this year’s vision began in 2014, Vision 2 lasted only three years before its replacement began taking shape. So say what you like about the committee but nobody can argue it isn’t visionary! As her leader waded from the right into Victoria’s Sudanese crime debate this week, local Liberal MP Sarah Henderson thought it timely to fly the flag for national pride. And the Member for Corangamite certainly got off to an early start, encouraging locals to celebrate National Flag Day on 3 September. The 117th birthday of the Australian flag would be, she said, “an opportunity to promote one of our most-important cultural symbols” while encouraging the next generation to “fly it with pride”. Hmm. Double Take can’t recall Sarah promoting previous years’ flag days but notes her suddenly overt patriotism.

Man charged for car death By Luke Voogt Police have charged a 44-year-old Norlane man with culpable driving following a horror crash last Wednesday which killed a man from Buchan. Geelong Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant David Ramm last week described the crash as the worst he had seen. “The car’s basically been ripped in half,” he told the Indy. “I’ve done this for nearly 10 years and this is the most devastation I’ve seen in a crash.” The driver was travelling “an excessive amount above” the 80km/h speed limit on Princes Highway, Norlane, when he lost control at 4.40pm on 18 July, Sgt Ramm said. The blue sedan veered off the road and slammed into two trees near a BP service station. An ambulance helicopter airlifted the passenger, a Buchan man aged 42, to Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Geelong Indy understands he was clinically dead at the scene before paramedics revived him. The man remained in a critical condition on life support at the hospital until he died on Friday morning. An ambulance took the driver, a 44-yearold Norlane man, to University Hospital Geelong with serious injuries. “He wasn’t as bad as the passenger,” Sgt Ramm said. “The first impact was on the passenger side.” Paramedics later transferred the man to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a stable condition, a Barwon Health spokesperson said. The horrific crash could have been worse if

HORRIFIC: Emergency services at the Norlane crash last week. the car missed the trees and collided with the service station instead, Sgt Ramm said. “He could have wiped out half of the service station. He would have taken out the first two bowsers and probably half the shop if he did that.” Police reopened the road at 5am the following day after diverting traffic away from the scene for the previous 12 hours. The man was scheduled to appear in magistrates’ court yesterday. The crash brought Victoria’s road toll to 114, compared to 138 the same time last year. Meanwhile a Geelong motorist in his 30s crashed into a power pole before ploughing through the front fence of a Grovedale home yesterday. Waurn Ponds Sergeant Mark Thomas said the man was travelling east along Pioneer Road when he lost control and hit the power pole. The rear end of the car ploughed into the frontyard of the Pioneer Road property. Paramedics took the man to Geelong hospital with arm injuries.

FILM DREAMS: Ocean Grove's Slavko Zwirn hopes his new movie role will help him make the big time.

Movie, fatherhood coincide By Luke Voogt Ocean Grove arborist and aspiring actor Slavko Zwirn hopes to inspire his soon-to-beborn first child with his latest feature-film role. Slavko plays a supporting role in Geelong film Undertow, premiering at Melbourne Film Festival a day after his partner’s due date next month. “It’s extra special for me,” he said. “I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed that we can do the birth and see the premiere too.” The 30-year-old has played guest roles in Australian series like The Wrong Girl, Conspiracy 365 and Jack Irish. Slavko hoped his role in Undertow would help him make the big-time. “It’s a hard thing to crack,” he said. “I know that I’m going to get there, it’s just

not easy. That’s all right by me.” But his firstborn might wait years to watch dad on the silver screen given the film’s dark nature. Undertow is a psychological thriller about a woman dealing with a stillbirth, who becomes irrationally obsessed with a pregnant teenager. “To be honest I don’t like watching myself on the screen let alone have anyone else watching me,” Slavko said. “But at least (my child) would know that anything is possible.” He praised Highton writer and director Miranda Nation for giving Geelong actors opportunities in the film. “She’s so willing to involve local people in her art, which is obviously very precious to her,” he said. “A bit of faith from others goes a long way.”

By Luke Voogt Geelong-based MP Simon Ramsay will give up his seat next election after blowing almost four times the legal limit behind the wheel on Saturday. The Member for Western Victoria announced he would not recontest November’s Victorian Election in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. “I am deeply remorseful for my actions and apologise for my error of judgement,” he said. “I also regret any embarrassment and hurt caused to my family, friends, colleagues and the Liberal Party.” Bellarine police busted Mr Ramsay driving with a blood alcohol level of .19 on Saturday night at Barwon Heads. He rang Victorian Liberal Party leader Matthew Guy to resign from his position as shadow parliamentary secretary following the incident. Mr Guy accepted his resignation immediately. Mr Ramsay would continue his term in the upper house until the Victorian Election on 24 November, he said. “It has been a great honour to represent the people of Western Victoria. “Promoting and protecting our regional communities has been core to my effort.” Mr Ramsay was proud of his work with parliament’s Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee investigating ice use and supply under the previous Liberal State Government. Mr Ramsay said he would continue to support the Liberal Party and Mr Guy until the end of his current term. “I want to thank my colleagues for their kindness during this difficult time.” Mr Ramsay met with Mr Guy on Tuesday to

COMMUNITY PLANTING DAY GEELONG EMBARRASSED: Simon Ramsay will not recontest in the next Victorian Election after drink driving over the weekend. advise him he would not recontest. The party leader slammed his subordinate’s actions over the weekend at a press conference on Monday. He said the high-range drink driving would make many Victorians very angry, especially emergency workers or those who had experienced road trauma. “Drink driving is incredibly dangerous and there is no excuse for it.“ Mr Guy said the courts should make an example of Mr Ramsay given his status as an MP. “As a sitting member of parliament to do this... leaves me very angry. “There is a special responsibility when you’re talking about drink-driving laws.” But Mr Ramsay immediately admitting his wrongdoing, Mr Guy said. “He’s paid a very high price for it and frankly, so he should.” He admitted Mr Ramsay losing his licence would affect his ability to operate as an upper house member covering all of western Victoria.

LETTERS Ignorance drowns ‘refugees’ Combined Refugee Action Group’s Peter Coghlan (Letters, 20 July) wrote that refugees deserved a fair go rather than criticism and blatant prejudice. Presumably he was referring to my letter the week before, suggesting signs stating ‘#NoMoreBoats’ and ‘#GovernmentAuthorizedRefugeesOnly’. So I checked out his group’s Facebook page. The group calls on the Federal Government to immediately close offshore and onshore detention centres, permanently resettle all boat people found to be refugees, and to permit them unlimited family reunion. The group also wants to give permanent settlement in Australia to large numbers of anyone In Indonesia classed a ‘refugee’. Remember when Kevin Rudd came to office? The boats had stopped and the detention centres were virtually empty but under intense pressure from refugee activists he instituted a “humane and compassionate” policy and dismantled our border protection. What followed was chaos. After 50,000 boat people and 1200 drownings he reinstated border protection and the boats stopped again. We now take all our refugees in an orderly fashion, with those classed as most-needy at UN refugee camps given top priority. They have no money to fly into Indonesia or pay a boat smuggler. At Labor’s conference in December a motion will again call for the dismantling of Australia’s border protection. It might succeed, becoming Labor policy. Those who never learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them. Peter Rees Bell Park

From Melbourne to Corio The prices of residential properties in Corio were always going to rise as they are ultimately closer to Melbourne and have long been under-priced (Geelong Indy, 20 July), notwithstanding perceptions of socio-economic problems in the area. Many Melburnians are buying investment properties in this city because they are still substantially cheaper than comparable ones in Melbourne, and good rental income is achievable. Bananas about service Last Friday night my electric blanket gave up the ghost. I use it because of my arthritis, so I had to buy one on Saturday. Using crutches, I tried every place at Drysdale without success. While filling up with petrol I mentioned my predicament to the service station owner. He suggested Leopold, where I ended up at Coles I searched around unsuccessfully before asking a lad putting out bananas. He said I would have to go to Target in Geelong. As I headed off with no chance of going to the city Banana Boy came up to me with a big smile and said: “We do have electric blankets. Follow me”. I hobbled along with him but the blankets were queen-sized and I needed kingsized. We discussed how it could work, deciding that half could be tucked under so that only one side of the blanket was used without activating the separate switch for the other side. Now I effectively have two blankets for the

Police’s satanic symbol After reading reports about some Victorian police having mental health problems, I am curious as to why the police emblem still contains a pentagram. The upturned, five-pointed star is well-known as a satanic symbol. The orientation should be reversed with the main point up, which would symbolise the five-pointed Christ star. Also, the dark gestapo-like uniforms of Victoria Police should be restored to light blue. Good police officers should not have to work under symbols of darkness when completing difficult operations. The Police Commissioner should think outside the square, apart from his walk in rural Victoria. B Bourke Balliang

Ganging up on Sudanese I am so bitterly disappointed and appalled at the dangerous and divisive commentary of our Prime Minister and his team. First, it is not based on any type of fact, as reflected in crime statistics. This only divides our country and further fuels racism and is not reflective of Australian values. To hear this rhetoric truly makes me sick to the stomach because I know that I have much more to fear from our politicians fuelling extremists in our country rather than the so called gangs. I thought we were beyond this vote-grabbing, fear-driving behaviour since the learnings from Tampa. I am so disappointed that again we have to be subjected to our Sudanese friends being ostracised and victimised. Politicians should think about the people's lives destroyed through this behaviour as their children go to school, kinder and sports while feeling on them the eyes of everyone thinking about the commentary. Locals first, immigrants later Senators Dean Smith and Cory Bernardi want immigration reviews, with the former quoting a figure of some 240,000 immigrants last year. Recently, friends assessed the number in the past four or five years at some four million, basing their figure on the fact that our population four or so years ago was four million less. Also, a recent newspaper report said a large number of extremely wealthy Chinese people were paying millions of dollars for the privilege of emigrating here. Some friends and I recently met state Member for Geelong Christine Couzens about state and federal government issues that we considered seriously wrong, including homelessness. Anything the government is doing on homelessness will be of no use when planned immigration is expected to be in the hundreds of thousands over the next year or so as hundreds of our local born-and-bred are left without homes. We have a public housing authority whose brief is to house those who need it. If it can't do that then perhaps it should not have a job. I reiterate that I have no problem with immigrants because they are only doing what our governments enable them to do. But I do have a problem with governments that fail to fulfil their obligations to their own people. The results are what counts but are nowhere to be seen. If we can't look after our own people then perhaps we should not have any immigration at all. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

Speak up for oldies Council of the Ageing (COTA) Victoria is a notfor-profit organisation representing older Victorians. We need readers’ help to understand what assistance and services are needed to make life more liveable for the ageing. The way in which support is provided to the ageing is changing, with new government approaches promoting more choices for older Australians. We have the opportunity to influence this by bringing the voices of older Victorians and readers’ ideas forward to decision makers. COTA wants to speak with people who may be receiving support from aged care services or who may be seeking such support in the future. We would particularly like to hear from

Sixty-five years ago an armistice ending three years of fighting on the Korean peninsula was signed. Within days of North Korea’s invasion the United Nations (UN) Security Council had the support of 21 member nations, including Australia, to defend South Korea. Australia’s navy and air force committed forces to the United Nations effort within a week of the war’s beginning. Australian ground troops arrived in September 1950. The armistice was signed on 27 July 1953 but the last troops did not leave until August 1957. Approximately 18,000 Australian service personnel served in Korea between 1950 and 1957. Australia suffered some 1500 casualties, including over 350 dead, 30 taken prisoner and more than 40 still listed as missing in action. In the UN’s first collective UN military action, Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen won international respect for their courage, endurance and combat skills. Sadly, one Australian soldier remarked that most Australians who served in the Korean War regarded themselves as “forgotten veterans of a forgotten war”. In this, the final year of the Anzac Centenary, I hope these words are no longer true and that those who served in the Korean War know that Australia honours their service. Each year on 27 July we observe Korean Veterans’ Day. I encourage everyone to honour the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Korean War so they know they are not forgotten. Lest we forget. Darren Chester MP Minister for Veterans’ Affairs

Food exports lost Victoria is an agricultural powerhouse and we has an enviable reputation as a region that can reliably deliver clean, green, premium produce to domestic and overseas markets. Our willingness to conduct research and development and respond to market demands, along with our rigorous biosecurity measures and export protocols, have put Victorian farm and food businesses in a prime position to tap into growing export markets across the Asian region. But the drive has stalled in the last three years, with a state Labor Government that hasn’t grasped the opportunity. Budget papers confirm that the Andrews Labor Government has cut trade engagement spending by more than half and quietly shelved important work to strengthen market opportunities in Asia. Similarly, the budget had no new money for agricultural research and development. Trade opportunities take time, patience and persistence to develop. If Victoria continues to disengage our farmers then our wider State economy will miss out. Victorian farmers and food manufacturers deserve a State Government with a vision for their growth and prepared to invest in their future. Peter Walsh MP The Nationals leader

FINALLY FRIDAY

Survivors in gig at Sphinx By Luke Voogt Merelyn and David Carter have survived car crashes, tumours and Black Saturday bushfires, so a big gig at the Sphinx Hotel is well within the country couple’s “comfort zone”. “Those things really change your life and who you are,” Merelyn told the Indy. “What we love most is the everyday getting out there and being able to tell our stories and sing our songs to people.” Carter & Carter hit the Sphinx stage with three of Australia’s biggest acts in the Taste of Tamworth tour on 10 August. “We had our rehearsal with the band and all is ready to go,” Merelyn said a day before the tour kicked off in the Dandenongs. The couple put the show together more than a decade ago to give people across Australia a taste of the nation’s most famous country music festival. “A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to get up there,” Merelyn said. “Maybe we’ll inspire some people to head up to Tamworth this year.” Taste of Tamworth comes to North Geelong next fortnight with prolific Australian artists Jetty Road, Travis Sinclair and Anthony Taylor joining the line-up. “We love Geelong, we’ve played there for many many years,” Merelyn said. “The musicians are terrific. Country is a very varied genre - it’s not just the bush ballads.” The Carters met when Merelyn was touring in the early ‘90s and David was working as a guitarist. “My guitarist couldn’t do that particular tour,” she said. “He said, ‘I don’t like the music but I need

THICK AND THIN: Couple and country duo Merelyn and David Carter. the work.’ All these years later I still haven’t got rid of him.” They would eventually marry and in 2000 released their first album as a duo. Touring as husband and wife was “not for everyone” Merelyn admitted, but she and David had developed “good tactics” for working together over the years. “You cannot take an argument on onstage,” she said. But the couple have been through thick and thin in more than music.

They walked away from a serious car accident before they released their first album in 2000. An elderly motorist pulled out in front of them as they drove back from a gig in Warrnambool, Merelyn said. “We hit at about 100km/h. We had our two girls in the back of the car. “Nobody was killed but we should have been looking at the end result. “Now they have kids of their own.”

In 2007 surgeons removed a tumour from David’s spine. And in 2009 the couple fought the Black Saturday bushfires at their King Lake home. The fires wiped out the town but Carters fought for “hours and hours” with a water truck and a massive hose to save their home. The couple survived it all and went gone on to win a Golden Guitar and 11 Australian Independent Country Music Awards. “We love sharing who we are,” Merelyn said.

FINALLY FRIDAY

Wolfe to prowl Corio hotel By Luke Voogt The country brothers who won Australia’s heart on a TV talent quest will return to Corio for a “rowdy” gig next weekend. The Wolfe Brothers played at the Gateway Hotel during a “wild“ carpark gig last year. “There were beach balls going through the crowd and people climbing on other people’s shoulder and climbing the marquee poles,” said the band’s Tom Wolfe said. “We love it down there mate.“ The boys were recently down in Geelong with Lee Kernaghan for the country legend’s most recent tour. The Wolfe Brothers had been “Lee’s band” for several years, Tom explained. “We’ve kind of called it the best apprenticeship you could get,” he said. “We’ve been able to travel the length and breadth of this beautiful country.” The Wolfe Brothers return to the Gateway Hotel on 4 August on a tour celebrating their fourth album Country Heart, which debuted at 9 on the ARIA charts. Brothers Nick and Tom Wolfe have known bandmates Brodie Rainbird and Casey Kostuik since childhood, Tom said. They had been playing together for a few years at pubs, weddings, and club events before releasing their debut EP in 2010. They found their “niche” at B&S balls and rodeos but still had to work various day jobs in Tasmania to make a living. But their career took off when they scored an audition on Australia’s Got Talent in 2012. “Reality TV is not reality at all,” Tom said. “You’re building a house and all of a sudden you’re flying in a plane, hopping into a limo and driving to a studio in Melbourne.

TRIO'S GOT TALENT: The Wolfe Brothers play in Geelong next weekend. “The next day you’re back to building a house.” Thankfully, the producers portrayed them as “a bunch of guys who love playing music” rather than over-dramatising their situation, Tom said. “We were determined for them not to make us out as being on our last chance.” The band looked calm in the lead up to their first audition. “But we were s**ting ourselves,” Tom admitted. But unlike some solo acts The Wolfe Broth-

ers had each other to rely on as they progressed through the show’s knockout stages,Tom said. “It was like us against the world.“ Tom was working as a carpenter before brothers clenched second place in the show’s season finale. “I don’t have to do that anymore which is great,” he said. The result saw the band win fame Australiawide and tour the US county fair circuit out of Nashville in 2016. “It was incredible mate,” Tom said. “You drive seven hours and end up in Indi-

ana or the middle of Pennsylvania. “You’d come to this little corn town with nobody there ... but there would be 10,000 people in a field ready for you to play. “We learnt pretty quickly that dry Australian humour doesn’t work. But they got our songs, so for us that’s what it’s all about.” After years performing with Kernaghan the Wolfe Brothers live by his creed. “He said, ‘you’re only as good as your last gig’,” Tom said. “If you can’t go out and do a good live show what’s the point?”

Value on the Oppy’s menu It’s the value for money that keeps diners returning to Oppy’s Bistro at Norlane Hotel. The bistro’s fantastic all-day menu from midday to 8.30pm offers tummy-filling goodies starting at just $11, making Oppy’s a great spot for a quick and hearty lunch. Add fast and friendly service and pleasant surroundings and it’s no wonder Oppy’s Bistro has a stream of regulars enjoying the venue. But the value doesn’t end there - public bar meals are available for lunch and dinner from $8. The Oppy’s Bistro classic menu offers a great range of casual and seasonal dishes for both lunch and dinner, including steaks, seafood, pastas, risottos and stir fries. A lovely display of sweets is in the dessert case for patrons who still have a bit of room left. There are also plenty of good-value deals including senior two-course meals from just $16.90 for lunch. Oppy’s Bistro features speciality nights with pizza or pasta from $12 on Mondays, schnitzels from $11 and parmis from $13 on Tuesdays, and steak from $15 on Wednesdays. And now the bistro has even more variety on its specialty night menu with burgers starting at $13 on Thursday and curries from $16 on Friday . Oppy’s Bistro is family friendly with a children’s menu and playroom facilities. Norlane Hotel is renowned for its homage to Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’ Opperman, one of Australia’s sport heroes in cycling during the early part of last century.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE BASE STATION AT NORTH GEELONG

Prison Expansion Project Community Advisory Group The Department of Justice and Regulation is seeking Expressions of Interest from members of the Lara and Greater Geelong community to be part of a Prison Expansion Community Advisory Group. The Prison Precinct expansion is part of ongoing planning to ensure the prison system is safe, secure, and well-equipped to meet demand. The Community Advisory Group will have input into areas of community interest on the building of the new maximum security prison of at least 700 beds in Lara, in the vicinity of the existing Lara Prison Precinct which includes Barwon Prison and Marngoneet Correctional Centre. The group will provide a forum for information sharing as the project progresses, and will inform details about how the design of the facility addresses matters such as traffic management, car parking, lighting, noise impact, visual impact, landscaping, flora and fauna, and environmental issues. To be considered for the group, participants will need to be: • recognised as a contributor to the local community • prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the CAG • demonstrate an understanding of local issues within Lara that relate to the project • have a connection with Greater Geelong, either as a resident or a business owner. Providing a new maximum-security facility is an essential part of the Government’s commitment to improving community safety. Local mechanic Mark Goodear brought 28 years of working on luxury vehicles with him when he joined Geelong West Automotive a few months ago. Geelong West Automotive is the city’s independent specialists in Volvo, Peugeot, Renault and Citroen, which Mark has serviced since starting as an apprentice at age 16. “That’s all I’ve ever known,” the workshops’ new part-owner and manager says. “Our workshops are tooled up especially to service these luxury European vehicles.” Mark prides himself on his attention to detail, which is what any luxury car owner would expect. He joins fellow mechanics Adam Hunter, Gordon Cuthill and Ben Buckle as part owner of the workshop. The team also includes George Bellingham, who has over 40 years of experience working with Volvo.

Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. "We're set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years," Ben said. "We've invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. "This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer's warranty at all." The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealerstandard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

Cats wary at home of dangerous Lions By Justin Flynn Earlier in the season Geelong would almost have pencilled in tomorrow afternoon’s game against Brisbane as a near-certain four points. The battling Lions were pretty much one of the competition’s easy beats. Fast-forward to round 19 and Chris Fagan’s young cubs are probably the most in-form nonfinals contender in the AFL. Since the bye rounds the Lions have been competitive against GWS, thrashed Fremantle in Perth, demolished Carlton, gave Hawthorn a touch-up in Launceston and ran the Crows to five points at the Gabba. It’s been an impressive comeback. Geelong has been hot and cold. How can you describe last Saturday night’s epic encounter against Melbourne? Down by 23 points at the final change, Geelong snatched a thriller with a Zach Tuohy goal after the siren. Gary Ablett was immense in the final quarter and Tom Hawkins continued his stellar season with a seven-goal haul. Remarkably, though, the win still had the Cats sliding out of the eight on percentage. With five games left, Geelong has three at the relative safety of its GMHBA Stadium fortress, including this one. Put simply, tomorrow’s game is a must win. Next Friday night, Geelong takes on the league juggernaut, Richmond, at the MCG. There is no greater challenge in the AFL today than the Tiges at the home of footy. If the Cats win their remaining games at Kardinia Park (and they should - Brisbane, Fremantle and Gold Coast), it should be enough to get them into the eight. But if the Cats want a top four spot, they need to win, and keep winning. Brisbane is the most improved side in the comp over the past month and a half. Alex Witherden’s form has escalated him into Rising Star calculations, while Harris Andrews should be back to take on Hawkins in what would be a oneon-one battle worth going to see alone. Geelong was buoyed during the week with youngsters Jack Henry, Quinton Narkle and Esava Ratugolea all extending their tenure at the Cattery. “All three players, in just their second seasons, have shown the ability to play good football at AFL level,” Geelong’s General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said. “When the opportunity has arisen, they have grabbed their chance. Jack, Quinton and Esava have shown a commitment to their football and have heavily invested in the club and the Geelong community. “We are pleased that we have been able to come to an agreement with them to extend their time at the club.” Chris Scott will make sure Geelong doesn’t take Brisbane lightly. He simply can’t afford not to. But at GMHBA Stadium with lots to play for, the Cats will get the job done.

Mulloway's lure in west ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Garfish again provided anglers with an option inside Corio Bay amid more miserable conditions. Fishing land-based anywhere from Eastern Beach to North Shore rocks was a likely location, with a light berley trail essential to keeping gars in the vicinity. Pinkies and flathead were also still present throughout the inner-harbour, while anglers fishing after dark with fresh baits targeted snapper in excess of 7kg. Squid were caught from Clifton springs right round to Queenscliff, where fishing the boat harbour was also productive for silver trevally and small salmon. Angler fishing the cut should remember that the tide change is roughly 2.5 hours after Port Phillip Heads. Offshore anglers encountered plenty of nice pinkies in 30m to 50m from off Barwon Heads to Breamlea. Squid, pilchard and salmon fillets were good baits and also with the chance of attracting a gummy shark. Bream were on the hit list during the week for Trellys Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos when he fished Lorne’s Erskine River. Using scrub worms and Z-man Motor Oil grubs he managed half a dozen fish to 35cm. The Glenelg River at Nelson has been producing sensational mulloway fishing. The river typically fishes well for undersize fish but mulloway over the 60cm minimum have been taken in best numbers all year over the past week. Cody Carruthers made the drive to Nelson over the weekend, catching a number of mulloway to a high of 70cm along with the odd bream on various baits including salmon fillets, squid strips and pilchards. On the freshwater front, Lake Bullen Merri was on fire for rainbow trout and Chinook salmon. Trolling Tassie Devils and diving lures in shallow water around the lake margins and the northwest side in particular was productive, with bank anglers doing well on Powerbait and lures. Lake Bolac was also worth a visit, with rainbow trout to 2kg still on the bite. Bellarine Light Game and Sport Fishing Club held a day competition at the lake over the weekend when the most success was recorded while using Powerbait.

North Geelong Warriors’ biggest challenge of the season awaits this Saturday when the home-side clashes with NPL2 East high-flyers Dandenong City. Perched atop the East conference ladder for almost the entire season, Dandenong has signalled its intent for promotion from the get go. Despite an occasional hiccup, it has managed to pull away to a eight-point lead with six rounds to go. Last weekend Dandenong continued its winning ways with a clinical 3-0 win away over Eastern Lions, who are difficult to break down at home. However, Shaun Filipovic, David Stirton and Stipo Andrijasevic all had other ideas, sealing the score as they have through the year. North Geelong will need to be at its best after going down 1-0 to St Albans last week in the cruellest of fashions when defensive midfielder Andreas Miltiadou’s attempt to protect the goal from an inbound ball deflected into

the back of his own net. The Warriors had a dominating performance and were creating chances throughout the contest with near-misses to Julian Cassano and Darius Madison. But St Albans keeper Robert Santilli was having none of it, with even his woodwork to thank at one point from a Jamie Noggler attempt. Warriors coach James Coutts said after the match that he could only feel proud of the way the team performed. Although the lads felt gutted immediately after the match they had a lot of positives to take from the performance, Coutts said. He planned to ask them to focus on those aspects as they prepared for the challenge ahead. The Warriors’ under-20s continued their rich vein of form with a fourth win on the trot when they went 1-0 over St Albans, Ben Tucak getting on the score sheet. Action gets underway at Lara’s Elcho Park 12:45pm Saturday.
