Three brutal slashes of a blade have maimed a gentle-natured pet in her family's Doveton backyard. RSPCA are investigating the unthinkably cruel acts that sliced through the right eyeball of Mia, a four-year-old Staffordshire-Mastiff cross, in Leigh Court about 9pm in 13 July. Her shocked owners Gino Nayna and Katherine Antonopoulos had only been out for five minutes when they got a phone call from Casey Council telling them Mia had been attacked. Apparently, someone had reported the attack to Endeavour Hills police, who in turn got in touch with the council. The couple found Mia bleeding profusely by the back door, and the side-gate into their backyard was left wide open. "I nearly vomited three times," Ms Antonopoulos said. "I just felt sick after what happened - and just angry." It cost $4000 surgery to stitch up Mia's eye but it might not be enough to restore her vision. The family suspect a neighbour who has complained often about Mia's occasional barking. "I asked him: 'Do you know anything about someone slicing my dog?'" Mr Nayna said. "He turned his back on me and said: 'I don't want to talk about it.'" A nearby resident claims the same man once kicked their dog as a puppy, and had an intervention order against the man. The shocking attack comes just four months after the family moved into the quiet court. In the meantime, Ms Antonopoulos suffered a broken leg in a car crash. Mr Nayna is still suffering the ill-effects from being savagely king-hit at a McDonald's outlet in St Kilda four years ago. Dr Chloe Hardman, a vet who performed surgery to repair Mia's eye, said she'd never seen such a malicious injury to a pet. It had deeply distressed staff at her clinic, Melbourne Eye Vet. It would have taken significant force to pierce the cornea's thick collagen layer as well as cutting Mia's nose to the bone , Dr Hardman said. The blade used would not have been serrated

IN BRIEF
Speeding driver was ‘on the runs’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man caught speeding at twice the limit told intercepting police that he was "busting" for the toilet, a court has heard. Mustapha Sillah pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at 177 km/h in an 80 km/h section of Princes Highway, Springvale shortly after midnight on 28 April. Sillah, who was driving a white Nissan Skyline at the time, allegedly said to police: "I was busting to have a s***". Or as magistrate Pauline Spencer described it in Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 23 July
- "he was having an emergency". His defence lawyer said the excuse wasn't strictly true but was a "panicked" response. "He was put on the spot and panicked - and threw the line out there." The truth was Sillah rushed home out of worry for his feverishly-ill mother, the lawyer said. He argued that it was careless rather than dangerous driving. At the time, the road was "virtually empty", he said. Police countered that Sillah's speed posed a "huge risk to other motorists" on a stretch
of highway with service lanes and intersecting side roads. Magistrate Spencer agreed. The driving was dangerous "even if there's no other cars on the road," she said. The unemployed Sillah had no driving prior convictions, though he'd previously appeared at the County Court, the court heard. Sillah was spared conviction given his young age. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and put on a 12-month good-behaviour bond including attendance at a roadtrauma awareness seminar.
Driver charged over six police pursuits A 22-year-old Keysborough man accused of leading six police pursuits over the past seven months has been arrested. The pursuits allegedly occurred in Dandenong South, Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren and Merrimu between December 2017 and July 2018. He was charged by Greater Dandenong CIU detectives. His charges included three counts of reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving whilst pursued by police and two counts of driving at dangerous speed. He was also charged with driving unlicenced, driving an unregistered vehicle, fraudulent use of a number plate and theft from a motor vehicle. The man was expected to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 July.
Cable thieves caught on camera Burglars have broken in and stolen a ute-load of copper wiring from a Dandenong South cable manufacturer’s yard on 15 July. The three intruders cut a hole in the perimeter fence at the Tycab business and drove a bluegrey twin-cab utility into the yard about 5.47am. They filled the ute’s tray with copper wiring, and drove off in a northerly direction on Frankston-Dandenong Road. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives have released CCTV images of the alleged intruders and the ute. The burglars - two males and one female are described as Caucasian. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 and Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au
207km/h driver arrested on Monash A man's car has been impounded after being allegedly detected speeding at more than 200 km/h on Monash Freeway. The Holden Commodore was clocked on a laser speed gun at 207 km/h between EastLink and Stud Road in Dandenong North about 1.10am on 25 July. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officers caught up to the vehicle and intercepted it at Heatherton Road. A 23-year-old Endeavour Hills man was arrested and is expected to be charged on summons. The vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1093. Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Milk-bar robbers left with the shakes By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong milk-bar owner has bravely fought and scared off two robbers who appeared to be armed with guns. "I had no time to think," owner Jimmy Huang said of his decisive actions. But when the hooded, masked intruders manhandled his wife Lucy, he said "I had no choice." The robbers entered the Heatherton Road shop just before closing time about 9.30pm on Friday 20 July. One of them leapt on the front counter, another went around the side, Mr Huang said. They surrounded Lucy, pointing what ap-
peared to be hand pistols. "I was inside watching TV and I just heard a shout," Mr Huang said. When he emerged, one of the robbers bashed him over the head with the butt of a pistol. "He just hit me without warning. "Then they asked my wife where's the money?" The robbers stole $200, cigarettes and a mobile phone, then demanded more money. Mr Huang re-entered the fray. He wielded a plastic milk crate and beat one of the intruders with a wooden axe-handle. The intruders fled from the shop, running across an oval near Dandenong Oasis. Mr Huang, who sports a black eye and sev-
eral cuts to his face, was treated at Dandenong Hospital for a cut to his head. It was the first time that the milk bar had been held-up since the couple bought the business 11 years ago. Now Mr Huang is considering extra security measures, such as a screen on the counter. The offenders were described as being aged in their teens to early 20s. One was described as African, the other Caucasian. Greater Dandenong CIU police are investigating the incident. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au, or Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487.
Burglar snares car and credit cards A man has allegedly stolen car keys and a car from a Noble Park home while the residents were asleep, police say. The burglar is believed to have broken into the Craig Street unit via a rear laundry window between 10.15pm on 25 June and 3.30am on 26 June. He stole keys for a 2014 VW Golf, and drove off in the vehicle, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say. A short time later, he has used the victim’s credit card to buy items from a service station on Cheltenham Road, Keysborough. The car has since been recovered. Police have released images of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries. The man is described as 30 to 40 years old with a slim build and a moustache. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Informing the consumers By Narelle Coulter Chances are if you step into Riz Akhtar’s Volkswagen Golf as an Uber passenger you will be asked what car you drive and what was the experience like when you purchased it. Riz, 28, is the founder of dot.com start-up Carloop. Like many tech entrepreneurs he is Uber driving while he ploughs most of his time, energy and passion into his website. After 18 months in development, Carloop went live at the start of July promising to “put Aussies in the driver’s seat to buy confidently”. Riz says Uber driving provides “a bit of pocket money” but far more importantly, it provides the perfect market research opportunity as he refines Carloop. “You talk to people. You’ve got them for a bit of time so you try different pitches and see what works and doesn’t work, what clicks with certain demographics. I collate all that information at the end of the night. “I’ve met some really great people and I’ve built some really good connections. I’ve met the CEOs of companies as an Uber driver.” Riz was born in Pakistan and immigrated with his family first to New Zealand and then Australia as a boy. The family settled in Doveton and Riz attended Hallam Secondary College. He studied at RMIT for an associate degree in engineering , before transferring to mechanical engineering. While at university, Riz secured an internship with Bosch at Clayton and later worked on the Wonthaggi desalination plant. A job offer from Boral took him to Queensland where he worked on infrastructure for the 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as high rise projects on the Gold Coast. By 22 he was managing a team of 80. His goal to climb the corporate ladder was interrupted when his mum fell ill and he returned to Melbourne. After a stint in health care at private hospital Cabrini, Riz decided he had had enough of corporate life. “I wanted to find a place where the culture was a lot better. The industries I was working in were cut throat, the hours were long and they were controlled by government budgets,” he explained. “I had always been interested in technology and cars and the automotive industry in general.” The idea for Carloop first started nagging at him while he was working in Queensland. “When I moved to Queensland I didn’t know anyone there and the only people I knew were my work colleagues. They knew I was into cars and when you’re into cars everyone comes to you when they are buying a car for advice and
Carloop founder Riz Akhtar wants to simplify the new car buying process. 182767 help dealing with the dealers. “Because I helped quite a few of them I realised we were all wasting time talking to people that consumers generally don‘t trust.” Riz decided there must be a better way to avoid the countless hours consumers spend visiting dealerships, comparing prices and negotiating the purchase of a new car. Carloop shows the prices dealers are asking for more than 60 popular makes and models of cars and compares those prices to what Australians are actually paying for their cars. Riz said his aim was to bring trust and transparency to the industry. He hopes Carloop will save consumers thousands of dollars.
“I’ve heard stories of people who have gone from one dealer to another and saved 10 grand," he said. “The industry is just not transparent. Consumers feel like the dealers are there to get them and the dealers feel the same thing. “I thought there is a better way to empower Australians to save time and money and be that trusted helpful source. “ Riz spent 18 months crowd sourcing price data from across country. Type in Mazda 3 on the Carloop website and it will tell you that dealers ask $30,254 while in reality consumers pay $27,928. Consumers can receive a personalised sales
report in under 24 hours based on their geographic location. “I got a testimonial from a guy in NSW who said a process that would normally take him four weeks with our report he was able to do it in under a weekend." He hopes women feel confident using Carloop. The site's purple colour theme was no accident. "So far of the people who have requested reports 30 per cent are female. We want to increase that number. We are trying to make the site as easy to use as possible, not because we want to attract women but because it is targeted at everyone." He hopes profit will come down the track via Carloop directly linking consumers to reputable dealerships in their area. Riz hopes dealers will embrace Carloop and see it as a way to cut their overheads and save their salespeople time. “I have spoken to 50 dealership principals across the state and I can tell you their biggest issue isn’t negotiating and saving money on price. The biggest issue is the time the salesmen spend on the negotiating process. “Dealers may not be happy initially but long term vision is huge.” Riz has been sharing his dot.com journey by mentoring other young people who have bright ideas for the digital space. He is excited to be involved with the INNovation Crowd, a Casey Cardinia Region start up ecosystem, that will providing mentoring, meet-ups and help create the jobs of the future in the South East. “I mentor a lot of young people. There are a huge benefits for mentors and mentees to work together in the South East. We have enormous opportunities." In five years Riz says he wants Carloop to be “a trustable, transparent platform that Australians know and trust to be able to save them time and money and the hassle that comes with car buying". “Every morning I get up at 5am and get nothing for. I really want to solve this problem. I come across it all the time. There are thousands of people talking about it every day, but not many people are trying to solve the problem.” When he’s not interrupting the car industry, Riz likes to get behind the wheel of his Volkswagen Golf and head to the Dandenong Ranges. And his dream car? “My dream car is a BMW M5. I believe I have achieved a lot in my life considering where I came from, at the same time I am not the type of person who will show off. It is the type of car that can go fast but it looks like a normal car. I can’t do a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. That’s too much."
Early detection system sparks interest across nation A Casey based firm is at the forefront of cutting edge technology that could prevent another Black Saturday fire storm. Successful Endeavours helped develop an early detection system that detects equipment faults and vegetation ingress affecting rural powerlines. The Narre Warren based electronics design and embedded software development consultancy, helped start-up firm IND Technology with its Early Vegetation Fault Detection system for SWER (single wire earth return) systems. Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology and specialised RF antenna sensor technology, IND Technology designed an Early Fault Detection system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24 hour basis.

In 2015 IND Technology approached Successful Endeavours managing director Ray Keefe to create a commercial version of the product including the highly technical web services needed to support the system. Mr Keefe said the the technology was “a world first developed in Melbourne“. “Every second, each device in the field sends a log of sophisticated mathematical data to the web services where it is stored and then passed through to a server cluster that analyses the data and determines the overall electrical health of the network as well as specific fault locations,“ Mr Keefe explained. “The technology relies on the atomic clocks on board the GPS satellites as well as some high speed local FPGA processing.“ In 2017 IND Technology won a State Government grant for the supply of 65 systems for northern and mid western Victoria. These had to be solar powered and were for
SWER lines. Successful Endeavours was again commissioned to do the engineering design and to produce the 65 systems. “As a result they detected a cable snap event that was equivalent to the incident that started a major Black Saturday fire,“ Mr Keefe said. Both firms were nominated in the national manufacturing awards run by Manufacturers’ Monthly. Successful Endeavours was a finalist in the Industrial Product of the Year category as well as Most Innovative Manufacturing Company Award. IND Technology was selected as a finalist for Outstanding Start up of the Year. Mr Keefe said EVFD was a great example of technology designed and made in Casey gaining national recognition. “The result is a Victorian based startup now positioned to take this technology nationally and then internationally.“

Is Team 11 a kick-starter? A successful bid for an A-league football licence could kick-start the stalled revitalisation of central Dandenong, says local councillor Jim Memeti. The Team 11 bid - backed by Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia councils - is among 10 submissions across the country bidding for two new A-League licences. Under the proposal, the team would play at a proposed $175 million boutique stadium near Dandenong railway station. It would create a stream of 465,000 visitors a year, and create 444 ongoing jobs and $114 million of economic activity, according to a Greater Dandenong Council report. The stadium itself would generate about 1000 jobs during construction, and 50 on an ongoing basis. It could lead to a long-awaited boom of private investment in the city - such as hotels, restaurants, bars and brand-name retailers, Greater Dandenong's Cr Memeti said. The State Government's $290 million Rivitalising Central Dandenong project, announced in 2006, led to a flurry of significant
public buildings and radical re-casting of streets. "There was a lot of state and federal funding but we haven't seen much private investment," Cr Memeti said. "There's been some but not at the rate we'd like to see." Cr Memeti said at least two extra hotels would be required for thousands of interstate spectators. They would also dine out on the variety of cuisines and entertainment at The Drum. The flow-on could be the return of bigbrand retailers to Lonsdale Street, he said. "When you create a more buzzing central Dandenong, you bring back people and the shop keepers." A new consortium South-East Melbourne Team 11 has been approved with delegate powers by Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia councils. It would remain constrained by an agreed budget by the councils. Greater Dandenong Council has contributed $110,000 to the bid. Team 11's final proposal to Football Federation Australia closes on 31 August.

The deadly Abbotts Road level crossing is set to be removed by early September - several months ahead of schedule. The State Government has announced a 10-day construction blitz to complete the 410-metre single-track rail bridge between the evening of 28 August and the morning of 8 September. During that time, buses will replace trains between Dandenong and Cranbourne. There will be traffic management but no extended closures on Abbotts Road during the period, the Government stated. The works include removing the boom gates and existing track, and installing and connecting the new track, signalling and power. The project had been expected to be finished in 2019. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said: "Not only will this dangerous level crossing soon be gone for good, but we're removing it earlier than we promised - a great result and a credit to all involved." "Both rail and road users will benefit from this project and from all the upgrades planned for Melbourne's South-Eastern suburbs over the coming years, getting people to where they need to go sooner and safer." The crossing had been used by about 22,000 vehicles a day.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
100 years ago 1 August 1918 Dandenong Centre Riding Election Sir - The following is written for thoughtful ratepayers and not for those who are determined to give a blind and personal vote without regard to the best interests of the shire.
A letter recently appeared in your column in which it was stated that "Mr McQuade during the past three years had taken a keen interest in public affairs and had plenty of time at his disposal". Let us also look at the record of useful citizenship of Mr C W Russell during the same period and then "by their fruits ye shall know them". Record of Public Work performed by the respective candidates for the Centre Riding during the past three years. Mr McQuade -Nil Mr Russell - Secretary patriotic league, three

The thief took the Pioneer scooter with a top speed of 10km/h out of the shop has not been seen since.
Ratepayers can see at a glance which of the candidates, if elected to the council is going to be a "live wire" and which is going to stagnate.
Mr Michael O'Donnell, the headmaster of Springvale State School, said yesterday: "This is the worst year in my memory for winter illness". Mr O'Donnell said it was now virtually impossible to get emergency teachers form the Education Department's Divisional Office in South Yarra to replace staff hit by the virus. Mr O'Donnell appealed for married women teachers who retired after marrying to return to work during this crisis period. Mr O'Donnell said the shortages were creating a second problem where classes with 60 pupils were a serious overburden.

5 years ago 29 July 2013 A barrow load of fun Youngsters Christopher and Jack were barking up the right tree when they and fellow Silverton Primary School students planted 250 trees in their school yard last Friday. In a campaign to improve the environment and air quality, thousands of students across Australia joined Planet Ark's schools tree day by planting native trees and shrubs within their school grounds.
At yesterday's official National Tree Day, volunteers worked throughout Greater Dandenong including Fotheringham Reserve.
Willow trees gave polish The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. Our first bathroom was in McCrae Street in the closed-in end of the back veranda. It was not lined and had only a rolled edged galvanised iron bath with cast-iron legs. We boiled the copper, and with a tin dipper or jam tin on the end of a stick, we scooped boiling water from the copper into buckets made from old kerosene tins. We then carted the water from the washhouse up into the bathroom and ladled it into the bath. The same water was used for all the family. The dirtiest went in last.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON Our house at 40 Clow Street was opposite Stuart Street and had a gate in the back fence that gave us access into the O'Brien property fronting onto Walker Street. Mrs O'Brien and her daughter Kath were friends of Mum and did not mind us cutting through their block past the house and barn to our back gate. When coming home after dark from the Boomerang picture theatre in Thomas Street, we cut through the O'Brien property and walked
beneath that dreaded vampire bat tree that had frightened us so much a few years earlier, and we discovered they were only ordinary small bats. But even then, after having watched a spooky movie, when the bats flew out of the hollowed-out gum tree and swooped over our heads in the moonlight and circled the two massive weeping willows, we were always scared that they might clamp onto our hair and claw us. The two willows grew at the back of the old house at the end of the O'Brien's perfect Monet-like cottage garden. Their long trailing fronds polished the ground until it looked like slate. When you parted them with your hands it was like entering a round summer house with weeping willow curtains. Jinnie and some of her friends spent many hours playing house beneath those magical trees.
The underground well was a focal point of the court yard. It was situated between the two sections of the house but further to the right of the block and outside the court yard area. The well was sealed with a handmade brick dome. Water was drawn up into a heavy riveted and galvanised bucket by a cast-iron Douglas hand pump that had a handle shaped liked a kangaroo's tail. The bucket hung from the hook lug beneath the pump's spout. This was the O'Briens' only source of water before Dandenong got a mains water supply in the early 1920s. Beside the well was a long wooden bench. Sitting on the top of that bench and all turned upside-down were chipped enamel buckets and a large galvanised bathtub with handles. 12351228-EPJ19-17

Husband in wife belting By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton man who pleaded guilty to striking his wife with a belt plans to still fly out with the family on a pre-booked overseas holiday - despite interest from the court, Corrections Victoria and Child Protection. During an argument, the 42-year-old man followed the victim and children to her bedroom on 17 June, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. He took off his belt and struck her on the leg, back and arm several times, police say. After calling police, she showed them a mark on her forearm - it was a "rectangle-
shaped welt" with surrounding redness. The man who made "full and frank" admissions to police was served with a family violence safety notice. His lawyer Nadine Daniel said the man sought a sentence indication because he didn't want to interfere with the couple's trip to a family wedding in India in early August. At court, the wife sat in the back row - keeping more than five metres away from the man under an interim family violence safety notice. The wife sought a more lenient intervention order to allow contact with the husband outside the family home, the court heard.
The man however faced a further hitch to his travel plans. Due to being on a corrections order, he would need leave from Corrections Victoria to leave the state. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted that child protection services may yet step in, and not allow the man to travel with his family overseas regardless. "We can't continue to have (his wife) beaten in the way she has been beaten. "He still thinks it's OK to beat his wife when she doesn't do what he wants her to do. "That sort of thinking puts (his wife) at risk - which puts the children at risk."
Ms Spencer said it was a difficult case because she was respecting the wishes of the man's wife. "If necessary, I will stop you seeing your family." Ms Spencer cancelled the corrections order to allow the man to travel overseas. She deferred sentence until the couple returned from holiday. As a condition of bail, the man was ordered to continue seeing a men's behaviour counsellor and to comply with the intervention orders. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 24 September.
Push for a safer crossing By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council will step up its push for a safe pedestrian crossing at a notorious black-spot on Stud Road. On 23 July, the council resolved to lobby Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan as well as local state and federal MPs for a crossing near Dandenong Stadium, McPhees Road and Cheam Street. Councillor Matthew Kirwan said Dandenong residents, particularly children, and bus commuters had no nearby safe access to the stadium, playground and floodplains parkland. The closest crossing was 850 metres away at the Heatherton Road lights, with the eastern side of Stud Road largely lacking a footpath. "In reality, residents attempt crossing the busy Stud Road unsafely rather than walk up to 1.7 kilometres." Among a history of "serious accidents" on the 80 km/h road section, a pedestrian was fa-
tally struck while crossing on 5 April. Being an arterial road, Stud Road is a State Government responsibility, Cr Kirwan said. "Investigation into these accidents has involved officers from VicRoads, Council and Victoria Police and all agree that a safe pedestrian crossing would be a significant road safety improvement." Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she'd discussed the matter with Mr Donnellan, who directed VicRoads to review how to improve pedestrian safety on that section. "Any death on our roads is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the person involved in this crash." Resident Lana Formoso recently wrote to Mr Donnellan about fixing the black-spot. A senior adviser for Mr Donnellan wrote on 20 July that VicRoads would "continue to monitor the situation". The road authority and Victoria Police investigated every death on the state's roads, with consideration to safety improvements at
Lana Formoso and sons Luka and Hugo at the intersection of Stud Road and Cheam Street, Picture: GARY SISSONS Dandenong North. 182801 those locations, the adviser stated. "As you may appreciate, VicRoads receives many requests for pedestrian safety projects and all are prioritised for funding based on the relative risks to pedestrians crossing the road. "Based on (a risks) criteria, any improvement proposals will be considered for funding
in a future program. "In the meantime, VicRoads will continue to monitor the situation." The risk criteria includes factors such as the speed limit, traffic and pedestrian volumes and the historical safety record, the adviser said.

The first new trees have been planted in Noble Park, replacing the stands of river red gums cleared as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. Noble Park Primary School students joined the replanting efforts on 24 July, including fastgrowing 'little spotty' eucalypts. About 12,000 trees, shrubs and plants are expected to be planted in Noble Park's new public open spaces as a result of the rail-elevation project. Three level crossings at Heatherton, Corrigan and Chandler roads, Noble Park were also removed. A spokeswoman for the Level Crossing Removal Authority said most of the trees would be native, including the 'little-spotty' and 'eucy dwarf' gum trees and bird-attracting corymbias. "To give them the best possible chance to thrive, trees will mostly be around two metres in height when planted." Resident Gaye Guest commented on Dandenong Star Journal's Facebook page that this didn't compensate for the loss of about 300 "heritage" river red gums up to 200 years old. "Two years ago trees were cut down only to start being replaced with sapling stock this week. "It's appalling!" Opposition public transport spokesman David Davis told Parliament on 25 July that the revegetation effort was "wholly inadequate".
"They are tiny plantings in Noble Park and in other corridors as well — minute plants have been put there. "What has happened is that hundreds and hundreds of trees have been clear-felled out of that corridor — some of them very large established trees. "In fact in the Noble Park case old red gums were actually just knocked clear down by this Government." According to Greater Dandenong Council's urban street tree strategy, there is a shortage of street trees, especially ones offering large shade. The region's estimated 55,000 street trees have a canopy coverage of about 9.9 per cent of the municipality - a low quantity by Melbourne council standards. Noble Park (18 per cent) was ahead of the metropolitan average for tree canopy but southern Greater Dandenong suburbs lagged. This is attributed to lopping of river red gum woodlands, the vast drained swampland and agricultural and industrial uses. Over the next 10 years, the council aims to fill the 10,000 vacant tree sites in urban Greater Dandenong. It hopes to increase tree canopy coverage by 15 per cent by 2028. The benefits are filtering air pollution, higher property values, providing wildlife habitat, reducing stormwater runoff and reducing surface temperatures, the report stated.

Hector ran to his success By Cam Lucadou-Wells There's no substitute for hard work for Endeavour Hills resident Hector De Santos. When he landed from Burma with his young family in 1969, he worked three jobs for about 70 hours a week. During weekdays, he was a factory clerk. Weeknights, a kitchen hand. And weekends, a wedding photographer. He didn't have executive qualifications, but he could earn an executive's wage, he says. "There were plenty of jobs in those days - as much work as you wanted." In between, he ran from Clayton to his Moorabbin workplace in training for marathons. His and many other migrant success stories feature in a multi-media exhibition Heartlands 2018: What Makes An Australian. The photographic exhibition is deepened by a series of web-based stories on the subjects such as Mr De Santos. "It's important for the general public to realise the atrocities that migrants have been through," he said. "Before, migrants came here for a better life. Now they don't often have a choice." Mr De Santos wanted to make the most of his opportunities after fleeing abject conditions under a military government in Burma. In retirement, the 72-year-old granddad still believes in not wasting a second. He volunteers as an English tutor at migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia, helps at a Burmese community garden at Springvale and joins plantings at the lush Frog Hollow Reserve near his home. "I just want to give back to the community because from the start, everyone helped me." The new arrivals that he helps at AMES face harder challenges to find work than in the

Some of his middle-aged students tell him they're too old to learn English. Well, Mr De Santos has just started learning Mandarin, ahead of his backpacking trip to China. He's no stranger to world travel and un-
daunted as the oldest person in backpack hostels - it's the best way to meet people, he says. A mosaic map of Australia - including Tasmania - has been installed just inside his home's front door. "Australia welcomed me, now I welcome

Christine Ash and students Paris and Resh mark the milestone. 183296
Picture: GARY SISSONS
Lesson learnt By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's humbling to meet a four-year-old student fluent in four languages, says St Elizabeth's School principal Christine Ash. That one tiny student may have absorbed a language from each parent and each grandparent. "It's mind blowing," Ms Ash says. As the Dandenong North-based school sets itself for its 40th anniversary, Ms Ash says it's one part of the school that fills her with pride. There are 30 ethnic communities that speak 35 languages within its classrooms. The school also teaches Mandarin Chinese. "All those languages are exercising their brains - it stretches their brains." Ms Ash was a parent and teacher at the school in the 1990s. She returned as principal for the past 11 years. "I think the school is remarkable. It's family
oriented and welcoming. "It embraces all cultures and all faiths." Jessica Connolly was a student at St Elizabeth's in the early 1990s, now the school's Prep teacher. "I have very happy memories," she says. "I made a lot of my friends at primary school, we went to high school together and are still friends now." From 1978, the Presentation Sisters of Victoria were formative parts of the school. Sister Lynne Farrelly was the school's first principal, followed by Sister Roma Carroll in 1980. On 3 August, Presentation Sisters of Victoria will return to plant a commemorative tree followed by school tours, an art show and childrens' disco. The 40th anniversary celebration is at St Elizabeth's School, 111 Bakers Road, Dandenong North on 3 August from 2.45pm-8pm.

Dogs unleashed in park By Cam Lucadou-Wells Works have begun on Noble Park's first offleash dog park. The fenced dog area was born from strong community feedback as part of open-space works on the Level Crossing Removal project, a project spokeswoman said. To coincide with the dog park, a compe-
tition for favourite 'pooch pics' is being run by the Level Crossing Removal Authority. Winners of the online 'Pooches of Noble Park' competition will be announced on National Dog Day on 25 August. Prizes are two $50 dog-grooming vouchers. Details: your.levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/ public-open-space

STAR JOURNAL 23
NEWS
Masters site remastered By Cam Lucadou-Wells New life may be breathed into a former Masters hardware site at 466-468 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough. Greater Dandenong Council has approved an amended development plan to allow a supermarket, eateries and other retail premises
on the 3.5-hectare site. The site had been vacant since Masters closed shop in late 2016. City planning director Jody Bosman told a council meeting on 26 July that the plan provided a "strong basis for high-quality commercial development of the site".
Noise, traffic and aroma concerns raised by neighbouring Haileybury College were addressed, according to a council report. The college also raised concerns about being exposed to legionella infections from poorly-maintained cooling towers as well as poor language and cigarette smoke from staff rest areas.
The developer has advised Greater Dandenong that the main ex-Masters building will be retained. The Masters' chain of 63 stores was run by retailing giant Woolworths as a rival to the Bunnings conglomerate. Masters was shut down by December 2016.
Inspirational tales told Aussie-Rules football took a starring role at a star-studded Naidoc Week ceremony at Lighthouse Christian College on 19 July. As part of a special assembly, Essendon VFLW player Courtney Ugle spoke inspiringly of moving to Melbourne to play football. She told of her and her siblings' determination and perseverence, and how far they had come. St Kilda Football Club also presented the school with a playing jumper signed by the team and an indigenous jumped signed by star Jade Gresham. Marbee Williams and Brent Watkins from the Boon Wurrung Foundation presented Welcome to Country and the flag-raising ceremony and performed for the assembly. Barker a bit bitter By Hayley Wildes Some close losses came back to bite the Dandenong Rangers SEABL men at the business end of the season. Missing finals on a head-to-head countback with North West Tasmania, captain Lucas Barker admitted it was a bitter way to end the season. "It's definitely tough," he said. "Up until the last game we thought we still had a chance, but it's definitely lit a fire in everyone for next year." Although the success didn't come as often as the team would've liked, Barker talked about one of the major positives from the season. "A positive takeaway was that we had so many young guys come into the team and perform; they really added some depth," "Puoch Puoch came from nowhere really. Early on we thought he might have been play-
ing a few minutes here and there, but by the end of the season he was starting for us and having some big games. "Then we also had Keli Leaupepe and Tyler Robertson come in at different points throughout the season. They provided a spark and really helped us when we were down." Barker, who played in his seventh SEABL season with Dandenong, won the prestigious Golden Hands award as the league-leader in assists - a career-high 6.2 per game. It's an award that Barker doesn't take for granted. "It's unbelievable," he said. "Looking at all the guys who have won it before me and the seasons they had, what they've done, to be in the same company as them is pretty special and I'll definitely cherish it. "Personally, I thought my season was pretty solid - I'm always trying to improve each year, so hopefully next year will be even better." Barker spoke about the joy of dishing out
assists and bringing his teammates into the game. "Scoring is always good, but when you can put others into a position to score and be successful as a team, that's a much better feeling." Barker had a tremendous season, averaging 13.3 points, 6.2 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game. The way in which he leads his squad is second to none; his fierce competitiveness and willingness to do whatever the team needs is a staple of his game. "I definitely try to leave everything out on the court every time I get out there," he said. "Sometimes you've got to have something different to these imports or other Australian players that are really athletic or tall, so I feel like if I just leave everything I've got out there, I'll be able to compete with anybody." There's no doubt about it - anyone choosing who to go to battle with on a basketball court would want Lucas Barker on their side.
Rangers’ SEABL season comes to a close By Hayley Wildes 2018 SEABL SEASON REVIEW RANGERS SEABL MEN Coming off a grand final berth last year, the Dandenong Rangers SEABL men were unable to reach those same heights in season 2018. The Rangers (10-10) fell agonisingly short of a finals campaign, finishing ninth - all that separated Dandenong from a finals berth was a three-point head-to-head differential against North West Tasmania. The Rangers were just unable to find key wins down the stretch when they needed them most. Anthony Drmic had a tremendous season. After starting out on a tear - scoring 70 points in his first two games - Drmic was a consistent threat throughout the season and averaged a team-high 19.3 points, along with 6.3 rebounds. Captain Lucas Barker was a rock all season for the Rangers. He averaged 13.3 points, 6.2 assists (league-high) and 5.3 rebounds. Barker dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
just gets the job done night in, night out. Big man Rhys Vague was another consistent performer. His 15.8 points and 7.7 rebounds (team-high) per game were valuable and his work in the post was a treat. The unearthing of Puoch Puoch was undoubtedly a highlight of the Rangers season. As his minutes increased, his confidence grew and he earned himself a starting role through his tough play. RANGERS SEABL WOMEN The Dandenong Rangers SEABL women had what can only be described as a rollercoaster season. After 10 rounds, the Rangers were sitting pretty in fourth place with an impressive record of 9-4. Round 11 was when it all went south; a 73-62 home loss against Nunawading started a dramatic fall from grace. The Rangers would win only one of their final seven games to finish with a 10-10 record - one win out of the finals.
Despite the late season collapse, there were some positive signs and great seasons across the board. Tayla Roberts' season was one of domination. At times, she simply took over games and used her size to bully her way to the rim. She led the team in points (18 per game) and rebounds (10.6), while finishing fourth in assists (2.1). Perhaps her most impressive game of the season was a 21-point, 21-rebound and 4-assist effort against Launceston in April. She followed that performance up with another ridiculous outing just a day later; 19 points, 24 rebounds and 3 assists against Diamond Valley. Tess Madgen's season was another highpoint. Making her return from ACL injury, Madgen had a delayed start to the season, but in her 10 games she proved she is still an absolute force. Averages of 12.8 points, 4.7 assists (teamhigh) and 4.3 rebounds was a great return
A new book by renowned author and journalist Matt Watson detailing the highs and lows of the VFL/AFL father-son rule will be launched in late August. ‘Sons of Guns’ is an in-depth look into nine famous footballing families, detailing the injury, losses, premierships and stress for fathers watching their sons replicate their success on a football field. The opening chapter of the book is dedicated to Barry Mitchell - one of the finest products to come out of Springvale - and his son Tom, who is a current star with the Hawthorn Football Club. Watson told the Journal that the story of the Mitchells is an interesting one, with Barry flourishing from his early days as a Springvale boy to carve out a 221 game AFL career despite plenty of challenges. “Barry was able to describe the way he came up through the ranks of local footy - he became a champion player, and his humility stood out,” he said. “Barry played in six finals, and they were all losses, and that shows you there are no guarantees in football - Tom is very similar to his father, he is an accumulator of possessions, and he’s probably better than his father at reading the play one step ahead. “I look at the two of them, and I think that Tom has taken the very best of Barry’s ability, and refined it.” Watson’s inspiration for the book came from his own experiences as a child. When he was six years old, he fell in love with the game, and found that the game connected his family. “My father never played football, but he followed Footscray (now Western Bulldogs) and I followed North Melbourne, so football became a big part of our family and my father would take me to the football, and it would be an event for me,” he said. “It was something that connected our family together so much so, that Bill (Matt’s father) decided to ditch Footscray and follow North Melbourne, so he decided to support his son - the whole family supported North Melbourne, I had two sisters and a brother, plus mum and dad. “I knew what our family dynamic was in relation to football - so when I was asked to write ‘Sons of Guns’ I wanted to know what family dynamics were like when the sons had a father that played at the highest level. “What I discovered was something that I hadn’t really considered which was the level of abuse and bullying the sons copped just because they had a famous father, and the challenges required to succeed in AFL football.” The official book launch will take place on 31 August, so bookings are essential. For more information, visit footyalmanac.com.au. Anthony Drmic made sure his presence was felt against Nunawading. 182187

and has her confidence - in her body and game - grew throughout the season, she really stepped up. The seasons of Kiera Rowe (10.2 points, 3 rebounds), Rebecca Pizzey (8 points, 4.7 rebounds) and Taylah Giliam (7.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2 assists) were also strong. Monday, 30 July, 2018

Knox no answer for Noble By Hayley Wildes Noble Park recorded its fifth win of the season in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League after easily accounting for Knox at home on the weekend. The Bulls led by 34 points at half-time and continued to run away with the game in the second half to claim a 17.22 (124) to 8.6 (53) win. Will Collis booted four majors, while Cosimo Anagnostou and Adam Giobbi were sublime. Rowville was ruthless against Montrose at Seebeck Oval, roaring to a 103-point win, 19.18 (132) to 3.11 (29). The Hawks were a class above as Riley D’Arcy and Jackson Anderson (four goals each) ran riot. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, the Doveton Eagles suffered just their second loss of the season. Doveton led by two points at the final change against Highett, but were overrun in the final term, falling 13.7 (85) to 10.14 (74). Michael Callinan and Cameron Carmody were best for the Eagles. Keysborough fought out a tough 15-point win against Hampton, 11.10 (76) to 8.13 (61). Chris Bryan (seven goals) was electric up forward. In Division 3, Endeavour Hills proved far too good for Hallam at home. The Falcons held the Hawks scoreless in the opening term and went on to claim a 13.21 (99) to 3.4 (22) win. Nick Gay was impressive for Endeavour Hills, while Rory McIvor was best for Hallam. Hampton Park was made to work in its win over Black Rock, eventually running out 9.12 (66) to 6.8 (44) winners. Shannon Henwood was stellar for the Redbacks and Justin Hill scored four goals. Heatherton was never troubled against South Yarra at home, winning 18.18 (126) to 6.7 (43). Heatherton’s David White (seven goals) and Reagan Maddaford were in fine form.
Springvale Districts held a 40-point advantage at quarter time against Ashwood and claimed a cruisy win, 15.15 (105) to 5.3 (33). Lachlan Morrey was superb. In Division 4, Lyndale dominated Moorabbin from the outset to claim a 101-point win, 22.22 (154) to 7.11 (53). Trent Day (six goals)

and Bradley Edwards led the Pumas. Sandown was no match for Lyndhurst at home. The Cobras were never in the contest as the Lightning powered to a 15.17 (107) to 5.3 (33) win. Josh Hurford and Brenton Walker battled valiantly for Sandown.

In NPL Victoria action, the Dandenong Thunder had a chance to really assert itself against the 11th-placed Hume City FC on Saturday night in Broadmeadows, but was unable to come away with the win. In the first 15 minutes of play, neither team was able to break through and the game needed a spark. That spark came from the Thunder in the 20th minute as Samuel Catherine got on the end of some beautiful team play to put through the first goal of the game. Holding a 1-0 lead, the Thunder’s defence was under immense pressure in the final 25 minutes of the first half as its opponent peppered the goals. Dandenong did well to keep Hume City out and held a 1-0 lead at half-time. That trend continued in the second half as Hume City’s offence really started to click. To
Dandenong’s credit, their defence stood tall. What would’ve been a 71st minute equaliser for the home team was disallowed due to an offside call on James Brown’s header. It was a moment of relief for the Thunder, but that didn’t last long as Hume City finally scored the equaliser - a fantastic pass from Nick Hegarty to Benjamin Lydikos - in the 86th minute. Both teams tried desperately to grab the win in the dying minutes, but neither was able to score the match-winner and had to settle for a draw, 1-1. In NPL 2 Vic East action, the top of the table Dandenong City’s four-game win streak came to an end at the hands of North Geelong at Elcho Park. City fell behind early as the Warriors scored the opening goal in the 19th minute. From there the home side quickly grew in confidence. Trailing 1-0 at half time, City was in need of
some offensive brilliance to get back into the game but was unable to find it. An 83rd minute goal to North Geelong saw them hold a commanding 2-0 lead. City wasn’t able to find the back of the net and fell to just its fourth loss of the season. Sitting in fourth position in the East, the Springvale White Eagles faced Melbourne Victory at home on Saturday afternoon. In what was a thrilling opening to the game, the White Eagles quickly gained the upper hand courtesy of a Damir Stoilovic goal in the fourth minute. The White Eagles continued to attack in the first half, but were unable to score again. Victory pushed hard in the final stages of the game as they searched for an equaliser but couldn’t find one as the White Eagles claimed an important 1-0 win.
