“The Lilydale drain has never been upgraded,” he said. Melbourne Water planner Michael Kearney has been working with the council on the amendment and spoke on the water authority’s behalf. He told the meeting that engineers had visited the area and “recorded maintenance issues with regard to the Lilydale main drain” as part of an investigation. “We’re already doing some work on that particular drain,” he said. Mr Kearney said the issue was “quite separate to the planning scheme amendment”. “This amendment is really looking to make sure any new work in these overlays is referred to Melbourne Water for our comments. “The recommended investigation should

proceed separately to the amendment, and not delay the amendment.” Yarra Ranges Council said the amendment made minor mapping changes to flood overlays and allowed regular farming activities in rural areas to continue permit-free. The proposal received 29 submissions, including 20 objections. The Planning Minister appointed an independent panel to consider the amendment and submissions at the council’s request. The panel recommended changes to the exhibited scheme, including mapping changes suggested by Melbourne Water in response to the submissions, and exemption of earthworks to allow routine farming activities to continue without permit requirements in rural areas, as part of the LSIO.

A Lilydale man says an under-capacity Melbourne Water drain is causing his property to flood. Don Di Battista spoke about the issues on his 10 acre farm in The Gateway at the Tuesday 24 July Yarra Ranges Council meeting. The council was debating Planning Scheme Amendment C149. Melbourne Water requested the change to update flood overlay boundaries in the Yarra Ranges to reflect recent flood modelling they’d undertaken. The Land Subject to Inundation Overlay (LSIO) and the Special Building Overlay (SBO) require a planning permit and consent from Melbourne Water for buildings and works undertaken.
This is to ensure that new development is protected from flooding and does not cause any significant rise in flood levels or affect surrounding properties. Mr Di Battista’s property is now subject to the LSIO overlay. “This is a real problem,” he said. “Melbourne Water knows that there is no capacity in the drain. “They’ve analysed it. “The LSIO has been extended because there is no drain. “Our property becomes the drain. “I don’t accept this.” Mr Di Battista asked councillors not to alter the LSIO until the drainage matter was resolved.

Shame, Sherbrooke, shame
The editor’s desk “Liberal And National Party MPs Referred To Victoria Police.” Sigh. When this email from Monbulk MP James Merlino landed in my inbox over the weekend, my reaction was one of fatigue. With still four months until the State Election and a Federal Election looming for next year, I’m already weary of the constant sniping. The government slams the opposition for inaction on one issue; the opposition retaliates with “yeah, but you haven’t done xyz” and vice-versa. I worry that if I’m exhausted by this childish back and forth - as a journalist with a keen interest in politics - the average voter will be close to tuning out completely. Apathy doesn’t help either side of politics and certainly doesn’t do the community any good. But I feel like the near-constant accusations of inaction and impropriety is breeding apathy. I fear the result will be like the old ‘boy who cried wolf’ - a politician will make a serious error worthy of condemnation but voters will have already tuned out, and it will slide under the radar. As a news organisation we have a duty to ensure this doesn’t happen. We need to cut through the political back and forth and get to the heart of local issues, to help our readers make an informed decision at the ballot box on Saturday 24 November. - Casey Neill

Every other week we read about money being spent all over the Dandenong Ranges schools. All our community are aware of the shameful neglect at Sherbrooke Community School. The kids have a dilapidated music room with possum urine running down the walls, mould, and maggots falling out of the ceiling! The car park is falling apart as is other infrastructure. As everyone around us celebrates new facilities, the kids at Sherbrooke are to cheer because leaking asbestos portables are being fixed. The upgrade given to the school a decade ago. Have the vision to build the Forest Hive for all the community and spend some of our money where we want and need it to be spent. Shameful, just because there is an election coming up, pork-barrelling the electorate and leaving kids to suffer in this disgraceful mess is unacceptable. I feel ashamed to be part of our wonderful community knowing this happens under all our noses. We are all to blame. Albert Ross, Mount Dandenong.
IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Tree treat Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross encouraged the community to celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July by nominating a tree of significance to the council’s Significant Tree Register. “Nominating a tree for the Significant Tree Register is easy to do online, and will help us to better protect our local trees of significance for the benefit of our environment and the enjoyment of our community,” he said.
A tree can be significant for many reasons, including rarity, age, size and historical value. Visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/TreeRegister before Tuesday 18 September.

IN BRIEF
Sunday burn is OK New local laws for burning off are now in place. Yarra Ranges Councillors voted to make the Open Air Burning Local Law at their Tuesday 24 July meeting, but not unanimously. Cr Jim Child moved an alternative recommendation with support from Cr Fiona McAllister over concern about biosecurity. His changes removed a ban on Sunday burning in rural areas and added mention of burning for biosecurity control alongside burning for fire prevention. Cr Child said farmers couldn't predict when they'd need to burn for biosecurity, when the right conditions would present, and when a burn-off might need to continue over a Sunday. "We need to allow our farmers the right to farm and manage their properties in a sustainable manner," he said. "Our farmers have been in this so long. They know what they're doing." Crs Noel Cliff and Mike Clarke opposed the alternative motion. "I can go along with basically everything in it, except the Sundays," Cr Cliff said. "Sundays is when we get the bulk of our six million visitors. "I don't want to do anything that I think
could jeopardise that." He suggested a permit for Sunday burns deemed necessary. "We've managed to survive Sundays without smoke for forever," he said. "Let's not wreck what we've got here." But Cr Child said a permit system was impractical. He said farmers worked seven days a week. "Mother nature works seven days a week, too," he said. Cr Clarke said allowing burning on Sundays meant "we're just not giving the atmosphere a rest". "I think we should be taking some days out during the week to help restore those atmospheric conditions," he said. He referenced a verbal submission from Emerald resident Kate Forster at the meeting, which raised health concerns. She told councillors that "smoke pollution knows no boundary" and burning off produced "a toxic soup" that "need not be visible to be harmful". "Burning biomass creates black carbon, a significant contributor to global warming," Ms Forster said. She said 24-hour burning was allowed in Cardinia Shire and fire brigade call-outs in-
creased when people took their eyes off their burn around dinner time. Ms Forster suggested Yarra Ranges work with the community on education and creative alternatives to burning off. Cr Tim Heenan advocated for stronger enforcement to stop people burning green or wet materials. The council received more than 210 submissions on the local law and heard verbal submissions at a special committee meeting in June. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox, said the local law would be in place for the next 10 years. "As a result of the community's feedback, we've made changes to ensure the local law works for our residents, while striking the balance between the need to burn off excess vegetation and the right of our residents to live in comfort without excess smoke," he said. The local law removed the prohibition on open air burning in June and July in rural areas, the 8am to 6pm time limit, the requirement to have an adult in attendance during burning in rural areas, the restriction on multiple fires, and the fire size limit of one cubic metre. The maximum wind speed under which burns are allowed is now 19 kilometres an hour, and permits are only required for burning off in urban areas.
Maggots and no money is a bad mix By Derek Schlennstedt Walls stained with possum urine and faeces, maggots falling through the ceiling and a consistent pungent odour that permeates the entire building. This is not a description of a house featured on a home improvement show. Rather, it is the current state of the music rooms at Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras. The ‘Mail’ spoke to music teacher Luciano Menolascina who described the grisly details. “The smell can be quite intolerable sometimes - particularly in summer,” he said. “It’s mainly possums; they die in the roof and the carcass starts to dry so I’ve had maggots come through the ceiling once. “I can’t make this stuff up and I’ve actually recorded it.” The room has not fallen into disrepair for lack of trying and the school has run a number of fund-raising days in conjunction with DIY work days to try and return it to teaching standards. With an enrolment of 160 students, Mr Menolascina said the room, which was previously a house, did not have enough space to adequately teach in. “I always have the biggest classes when it comes to the arts,” he said. “We have three instrumental teachers, which I organise for different days, but if we had a bigger room we could have more on the same day. “Today I’ve had to rejig the timetable so we can both use the space.” Visiting the site on 20 July Liberal Monbulk

Norwood (Instrumental Teacher) and Sue Holmes 183351 candidate John Schurink, State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Shadow Police Minister Edward O’Donohue were taken aback by the smell. They were reassured by students using the building that they would “get used to the smell“. Following the visit, Mr Guy said that a Liberal State Government would invest $100,000 to upgrade the music facility. “A Liberal-National Government, together with John Schurink, will give Sherbrooke the facilities they so desperately need and rightly deserve,” he said. “The Sherbrooke Community School has a fabulous music curriculum that needs its facilities upgraded, not ignored.” Monbulk MP and Education Minister James

Belgrave police are investigating an incident where a car pulled over on Belgrave Hallam Road and dropped off a crying child on the side of the road before driving away and returning a few minutes later. At 9.45am on 29 July, a green Holden sedan was seen pulling over on Belgrave Hallam Road in Belgrave before leaving a four-year-old child on the side of the road crying. The driver then took off before returning a few minutes later. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage is urged to contact Belgrave Police on 9754 6677. Sergeant Paul Phillips at Belgrave Police station said this kind of behaviour was "not acceptable".
Olinda Police are investigating the dumping of two Chrysler sedans in the Dandenong Ranges National Park on the night of 29 July. The cars were dumped on Silvan Rd, Olinda, at Eagle Nest Track stripped of all parts and strapped together. Anyone with information on who dumped the cars or who owns them should call Sergeant Andrew Herdman at Olinda Police on 9751 1241.
Merlino said the Department of Education recently undertook maintenance and roofing works at the college, though it was not understood whether the music rooms were included in this. “I have been advised the department has recently completed maintenance and roofing works at Sherbrooke Community College to ensure the school premises are safe, secure and well-maintained,” he said. “If a school has urgent maintenance or repair issues which are beyond its budget capacity and directly impact on student or staff safety, it is important they contact the department immediately so any issues can be addressed.” It is believed that to date, the Sherbrooke Community College has not made an application for funding.

Fears disappeared By Derek Schlennstedt Olinda resident Bree Faulkner's fears about passing her illness onto her children disappeared after she took part in a DNA sequencing program. Victorians suffering from rare or undiagnosed illnesses are being given the chance to find out more about their diseases, thanks to State Government funding for the world-leading program. Ms Faulkner was among 2000 Victorians with a rare or undiagnosed illness to access it. She was diagnosed at 11 months of age with polycystic kidney disease - a genetic disorder that involves the growth of numerous cysts in both kidneys. This slowly leads to kidney failure. Before genetic testing, her condition was presumed to be autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), which has a 50 per cent chance of being passed onto the next generation. Under the impression that if she had kids they would inherit the condition, Ms Faulkner
said she was hesitant to have children or even plan for the future. “I was always told that if I had children they would have this disease,” she said. “I had been under the assumption that it’s a passed-on disease and I knew that I got it from my parents, and I knew that I could pass it onto my kids if I had any. “I’ve lived my life with the fear that if I have children they’ll live a life that I have.” Now aged 30 and following a referral for DNA sequencing, Ms Faulkner’s diagnosis changed to autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). That result means her genetic disorder is recessive and not dominant, so her children will carry the gene but not have the disease. “It is wonderful news to know that I and my husband can go ahead and plan a family without having that worry,“ she said. “I feel like once I have my kidney transplant and look at having kids I can go into that knowing probably even more than a mother with no issues would know.”
Bree Faulkner with her Husband Michael Faulkner. Through Genomic Sequencing Bree was able to find out whether her children would be carrier or would be diagnosed with the same disease she has.
CEO resigns By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council will have a change of leadership following the resignation this week of CEO Glenn Patterson. Mr Patterson will take up the position of CEO at the City of Casey in September. With a population of 327,380 as at 2017, Casey is more than double Yarra Ranges' population of 156,982, but in a vastly more condensed landscape of 409 square kilometres compared with Yarra Ranges' 2470 square kilometres. Mayor Len Cox confirmed Mr Patterson’s resignation, saying he had been with Yarra Ranges for 10 years. “I am disappointed that Glenn is leaving ... from a strictly selfish point of view, and all the council is of the same mind,” Cr Cox said. He said that with the help of the council, Mr Patterson had turned Yarra Ranges Council around. “The place is running extremely well and a lot of it is due to Glenn’s ability,” he said. “Not only has he the ability to run staff, but to speak to anybody at any level. He relates to people very well. “He has been quite an asset to Yarra Ranges Council.” Mr Patterson served as CEO at the Colac Otway Shire and Baw Baw Shire councils before joining Yarra Ranges. A new CEO is not expected to be appointed before the start of next year.
Cardinia’s new leader Joey jubilation - looking after the littlies By Derek Schlennstedt The first Kallista Scouts Group has just launched its very first Joey Scout Mob, which caters to children aged 5-7-years-old. Already the addition to the scouting group is growing quickly, and the ‘Mail’ spoke to Volunteer Scout Leader, Tony McTackett about the opportunities it offers young kids. “With Joey scouts the key thing is to have fun,” Mr McTackett said. “It’s getting to learn about them, the environment, and there are also a number of badges which they earn.” “We play games, go out and visit science works ... we’re also hoping to go to the mount Burnett Observatory.”
“It’s really an introduction to scouting.” With the addition of Joey Scouts, the age range at Kallista Scouts Group goes from 5-25-years-old. Unlike older age groups, where the emphasis is on individual badges, Mr McTackett said that the Joey’s primarily promote teamwork. Joey’s do badge work by participating as a mob and as a team ... so it’s learning the basics of teamwork This term with another Monbulk joey badge, buddy badge buddying up with them, meeting with them and doing things together The Joey’s though aren’t just for kids and Mr McTackett said the parents often became involved too.
“The parents certainly become involved too, and pretty keen to do so. “It’s not just a babysitting service but an involvement for the whole family.” The 1st Kallista Joey Scout Mob meets on Monday nights during school terms from 5.45 to 6.45 pm at The Patch Hall, 5 The Patch Rd, The Patch. For enquiries about Joey Scouts or other age Sections email gl.1 st kallista@.scoutsvictoria.com.au “We’re a Growing group and with the joey mob , we’re just going to get bigger and better, “ Mr McTackett said.

Cardinia Shire Council has a new CEO. Councillors unanimously resolved to appoint local resident Carol Jeffs for a five-year term at a special council meeting on Monday 23 July. She'll start on Monday 8 October following the retirement of long-standing CEO Garry McQuillan. Cr Ross said Ms Jeffs had extensive experience in local government management and leadership. "As one of Australia's fastest growing municipalities, it is essential that we continue to deliver quality services and infrastructure to our established and new communities in the most efficient way possible," he said. Ms Jeffs has lived in Cardinia Shire for four years. She was recently interim CEO and community and economic development manager at City of Port Phillip, and also held management roles at Latrobe City Council. "I look forward to advocating strongly for what Cardinia Shire needs going forward and engaging with residents, community groups, farmers, businesses and landowners, as we take up the challenge of creating a future we can all be proud of," Ms Jeffs said.

Kallista CFA gets fired up By Derek Schlennstedt If you drove through Kallista on Wednesday, 25 July you may have seen a number of CFA vehicles parked in the main street and thought that a large emergency operation was underway. Instead, Kallista, Monbulk and Sassafras CFA units were undertaking a community focused training exercise. Over 30 CFA volunteers and six CFA tankers descended on the main street of Kallista to liaise with tradespeople and build a community plan for the future. The first-time event incorporated Kallista Traders into what was called the Kallista Village Major Asset Protection plan or KVMAP. Kallista CFA Captain Peter Toender said KVAMP had been three months in the making and was organised so that they could update town layouts, seek out new hazards and ultimately prepare a fire plan for the village that could be used in both winter and summer. "It hasn't been done before and for us it has uncovered some very important things," Captain Toender said. "It's us updating our pre-plans which is a document we carry in the vehicles that details where the power board or gas meter is, as well as identifying if there's any sort of hazmat or asbestos - it details any sort of issues we might face." "It's also about making the traders aware of things that might not be correct or right." Over a period of hours separate groups of CFA volunteers met with shop owners and identified any possible hazards as well as addressing any concerns the owner might have. Epoche owner Mirakye McCarty was comforted by the knowledge that her local CFA was taking such a proactive response in planning for future events. "Even them just having a sense of knowing how we are spatially organised and just a sense of where boundaries begin and end is really comforting," she said. "Just to have that relationship and that familiarity with them is comforting."
A multi-brigade training exercise conducted in Kallista helped shop owners identify possible hazards and allowed the CFA to plan for future fire events. The “firsttime event” incorporated Kallista Traders into what was called the Kallista Village Major Asset Protection plan or KVMAP.
Over 30 CFA volunteers and 6 CFA tankers descended on the main street of Kallista.
A story worth telling - and Storeys the family to tell it By Derek Schlennstedt The Storey family, who last year followed in the footsteps of Burke and Wills to write a selfpenned show, have written yet another fascinating play. In 2017, the family of four from The Patch travelled around Australia performing their play The Ghost of John King. During the tour they stopped at the Birdsville Big Red Bash, which prompted them to write their newest play The Rainbow Serpent and the Story of Creation. Simon and Tina Storey said that after visiting the Birdsville Big Red Bash, they were inspired to create a performance mixing Indigenous and European language and create a story that highlighted the Indigenous aspect of the region. After months of planning the family travelled back to the Birdsville Bash and on 10 July, 2018 unveiled their play. “Last year we were on tour with our show and that’s when we went to our first Big Red Bash,” Mr Storey said. “While there we saw the welcome to country ceremony which we though was really good, but we thought there should be more to highlight the indigenous connection to country and so started planning the show.” Drawing on indigenous tales, Mr Storey said it was important to stress that the play was not a dreamtime story, but inspired by several variations of dreamtime tales. “It’s really about the Rainbow Serpent creating the world, and the creatures in the world and at the end the Rainbow Serpent creates man and woman and gives them rules for how they should look after the earth and the creatures in it.” Arriving weeks before the big red bash, the Storeys facilitated drama workshops with local children for their roles in the production. They also constructed a giant Rainbow Serpent, which during the performance appeared on top of the big red sand dune and slithered down to the audience. The serpent was constructed from five king6 MAIL

Wayne Kite and Paula Faulkner, from Ngalan Productions, provided the music with didgeridoo and clap sticks and Elder Don Rowlands read parts of the script in the native Wangkangurru Yarluyandi language. On opening night of the Big Red Bash the play was performed to an audience of 9000 people and coincided with the welcome to country.
“The kids loved their costumes and couldn’t wait to run through the crowd and get up on the stage to show the audience their animals,” Mr Storey said. “Everyone really responded well, and enjoyed the story.” Mr Storey said the family were making plans to bring the performance to the Yarra Ranges. Cash for Emerald STEM By Derek Schlennstedt A Liberal-National State Government would provide $5.2 million to create a state-of-theart STEM centre at Emerald Secondary College. The funding comes after months of campaigning by the school to upgrade the facilities in the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) building. Earlier this year the ‘Mail’ toured the building with principal Jodie Doble, who pointed out black mould, leaky ceilings, inadequate piping and gas and electricity supplies, and out-dated equipment. The funding announcement aims to address these issues. On Friday 27 July, Gembrook MP Brad Battin and Liberal Monbulk candidate John Schurink met with Ms Doble to announce that if elected, a Liberal-National Government
would invest $5.2 million to repair the STEM building. Mr Battin said that ‘only a Liberal-National Government will rebuild the school’s maths and science classrooms“ and “give students and staff of Emerald Secondary a safe and exciting learning environment.’ “Emerald Secondary has an outstanding reputation for quality education,” he said. “This new STEM centre will only expand the learning opportunities for students in the hills, especially with science and maths.” In December last year, Emerald Secondary College received $500,000 from the State Labor Government, which Mr Battin described as a Band-Aid fix. “Emerald Secondary College deserves more than a Band-Aid, it deserves a proper fix,” he said.

Wall of Support leads design of Monbulk’s new rooms By Derek Schlennstedt Monbulk Football and Netball Club (MNFC) has seized the opportunity to incorporate a Wall of Support into the design of its new clubrooms. Motivated to action by the loss of Monbulk player and friend Matt O’Shea, past MNFC president Michael Corcoran said he wanted to put mental health awareness at the centre of small communities. “Sporting clubs provide invaluable connections between so many and it is a real opportunity to help change the way we are there for each other, from our youth and beyond,” he said. In what is traditionally an unspoken illness,
Mr Corcoran said he hoped that the wall would help to remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues and create a conversation. The wall itself will be incorporated into the Monbulk football netball, cricket and junior football clubroom. Fund-raising for the club room and the Wall of Support has already started and Mr Corcoran said he was confident the $50,000 funding target would be achieved. Almost $25,000 has been raised to date and the appeal has gone international. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the response,” Mr Corcoran said. He reserved special praise for Monbulk Recreation Reserve president Paul Utting.
“We’ve had donations from clients, colleagues and friends in the US, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and different parts of Australia, all demonstrating that the world does care." As a form of acknowledgment and inspiration to the community, Mr Corcoran said every donor to the wall would have their name permanently etched into it. Moreover, he would like to see the concept expand to other clubs and communities. “Given that football netball clubs are such an integral part of small communities, I’d love to see every club eventually have its own Wall of Support,” he said. “It doesn’t just have to exist within the football netball world.
“There is no reason why this shouldn’t extend to soccer, rugby league, rugby union and other community clubs, sporting or not.” Mr Corcoran was so confident that the fundraiser would reach its goal that he boldly promised whatever balance remained outstanding, he would personally donate, adding “that’s not meant as anything other than a statement of how much I believe in this project”. “I fully expect there will be a balance at the end, but I doubt it will be anything like $25,000 as I’m convinced more people from the local community want to get involved and show support. “Now is their opportunity.” To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/wallofsupport.

Everything old, new again Mount Evelyn Upholstery specialises in antique restoration, recovery and repairs for all types of furniture. Skilled upholsterer Luke Wilson prides himself on his workmanship. After more than 30 years in the industry, he has developed a long list of satisfied customers. The business services all kinds of furniture including lounge suites, dining chairs, recliners, ottomans, bedheads, footstools and sofa beds. For the valued clients, there are thousands of quality fabrics from which to choose. Luke said he gained great satisfaction from completing a job and seeing the smile on his customers’ faces. Due to his many years of experience, and the time and level of care it took to complete many of his projects, the upholsterer said there was no feeling quite like seeing the completed project. He said that knowing he had used his own
hands and his hard-earned skills to make a customer’s day was what kept him in the business. “It’s fantastic when furniture is restored to its former glory,” Luke said, “or to bring an old piece alive with a more modern look.” With so much experience, and so many projects under his belt, Luke is only too happy to offer advice and suggestions to his clients. Luke said his finished, refurbished works often became the centrepieces of many homes. On some occasions, these pieces could often have sentimental value for families, which was why the result was worth the time and effort. Finals focus
Robinson’s pride
By Cindy Downey Monbulk Junior Football Club had its final away game in a season filled with Monbulk Hawks team spirit, grit and determination.
By Hayley Wildes Stifling on-court defence is what 15-year-old basketballer Meg Robinson prides herself on. When some players look to take a break on defence, the Emerald local does the opposite. Recently, opposition players from across the nation learnt that the hard way when Meg helped Victoria Metro claim gold at the Basketball Australia under-16 Junior Championships on the Sunshine Coast. Playing at her first national championships, she looked at home; averaging 8.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Not even a shoulder injury (sprained AC joint) that sidelined her for three games could keep her out of the all-important finals games as she returned for the semi-final against New South Wales Metro, recording 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. Vic Metro defeated NSW Metro, 74-59, booking their place in the grand final against Vic Country. Meg spoke about taking on Vic Country and facing friends - in the final. "I had a couple of friends in the Vic Country team, so it was interesting to play against them at that level - it made for an interesting match," she said. It certainly was an interesting match. Vic Metro jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and despite a comeback in the third quarter from Vic Country, the Metro girls claimed gold with a 65-57 win. "All day we had all this nervous energy and just the second we got out on the court, we were ready to go and we really pushed them," Meg said of the dominant first quarter. "It was the most amazing feeling when that buzzer went off. Having done all that training and those girls were like my family, so it was just the best feeling." The quick wing - who plays representative
Under-9 The side was up against a very tough Healesville team. The kids played a tough match but came off the field with their heads held high. Best: Arley, Jack, Kale, Ava, Hudson.
Under-10 This match was a fantastic finish to a great season. The group really took it up to a strong Healesville side, fought out every contest, and found their players. Best: Wil, Ben, Kelly, Robert, Charlie.
Under-11 Upwey 6.5.41 d Monbulk 3.0.18 It was a close contest for the first three quarters. The Hawks were unable to hold out and the strong wind didn’t help. Best: Josh S, Kit, Hamish, Xavier.
Under-12 Healesville 9.3.57 d Monbulk 3.2.20 The team was up against a very good opposition, which got on top of the Hawks in the first half. Monbulk had to dig deep and came out and evened out the second half. Best: Oscar, Tim, Jacob, Harry, Abel.
Under-14 Blue Meg Robinson claimed gold with Vic Metro at the under-16 Australian Basketball Championships. Picture: COURTESY OF BASKETBALL VICTORIA basketball for the Knox Raiders - has been playing basketball since she was seven-yearsold after a move from netball. "I used to play netball, but I just found with basketball that I got to run so much more," she said. And run, she does. With her uncanny ability to get in passing lanes and be a flat-out nuisance on defence, Meg then gets out and runs in transition like few others. Her speed is lightning quick and she knows how to use it to her advantage. "I love running the ball in transition and I
love defence - that's my favourite part of the game," she said. "I love watching players that have a great defensive game. The ones who really go after it on defence, that's what inspires me." With a gold medal around her neck, Meg proved herself on the national stage and was thankful for the chance to represent her state. "I'm just so grateful for the opportunity," she said. "From my coaches, family and all the players around me - it was really just a group effort."
Monbulk 3.6.24 d Healesville 2.4.16 The team focused on this game and not on next week. The solid four-quarter performance was a good way to enter the finals campaign. Best: Nick T, Jake M, Nathan S, Logan B.
Under-14 Green Emerald 14.9.93 d Monbulk 0.0.0 After a spray at quarter time the boys fired up. They pride themselves on effort, intensity and tackling and all those things shone through. Best: Harry, Moe, Tommy, Abiah.
Under-16 Monbulk 14.11.95 d Healesville 1.2.8 The side was missing a few players who had a volleyball tournament, so four under-14 players were filling in. The boys worked hard in wet conditions. Best: Alex G, Gary R, Ben H, Tully F, Campbell D.

Safety boost for Corolla
An active cruise control system headlines the new safety features. of the lane markings as well as the position of the vehicle ahead and then provides steering assistance to ensure the car stays centred in the lane. It is designed to function on highways and freeways, but if the driver removes their hands from the steering wheel, they receive visual and audio warnings. Across the range, the new Corolla hatch offers further standard safety technology in the form of an automatic high beam system for the headlights and a road sign assist (RSA) system that is designed to recognise speed limit signs and displays them on the multi information display in the instrument cluster. Corolla SX and ZR models add a blind spot monitor (BSM) to the safety kit list with ZR also featuring head-up display. For improved safety and convenience when reversing, the new Corolla also comes standard with a rear-view camera with guidelines while for passive safety and occupant protection, all models include a total of seven airbags.
The new Corolla has a pre-collision safety system.
1187559-RC24-15
The new Toyota Corolla hatch brings unprecedented levels of advanced safety technology to the small car class with active driver assistance and passive protection features. Active cruise control, a pre-collision safety system, seven airbags, and reversing camera are all standard across the three-model Corolla hatch range. Toyota Australia sales and marketing vicepresident Sean Hanley said the new generation model offered outstanding driver assistance technologies that significantly raised the safety bar. "The all-new Corolla hatch is set to make its mark as one of the safest small cars in its class with many of its standard advanced safety technologies usually only found on luxury or higher-grade vehicles," he said. "But along with its new-found stylish design and fun-to-drive attitude, we considered safety an absolute priority for the new Corolla hatch to ensure whatever market our customers are shopping in, they have the highest levels of protection and driver assistance possible." Headlining the features is an active cruise control system that is standard across the entire three-model range of Corolla Ascent Sport, SX and ZR. Using a system of cameras and other sensors to maintain a set distance to the car in front, the driver is able to set a cruising speed of between 30km/h and 180km/h with the system operating at all speeds down to a complete stop for CVT-equipped models. For the Ascent Sport fitted with the manual gearbox, the ACC operates at speeds above about 30km/h. All new Corolla hatch models are also fitted with a suite of advanced safety features to help avoid collisions including an active pre-collision safety (PCS) system with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection. If a potential collision is detected, the PCS system will initially employ a visual and audible warning, then brake assistance and if the driver fails to heed the warnings, full automatic braking to assist the driver to bring the car to a complete stop. All Corolla hatch models also feature an advanced lane departure warning and support system with multiple functions. If the car deviates from the lane unintentionally, the lane departure alert (LDA) will first issue an audible and visual warning before providing gentle steering assistance to encourage the driver to move back into the lane. To help reduce the potential of fatiguerelated collisions, the system also includes a sway warning function that displays a warning prompting the driver to take a break if the system detects the car swerving due to driver inattention. Corolla hatch models equipped with the CVT feature a lane trace assist (LTA) function that works when the ACC is activated. The lane-centring function uses detection

Valley women draw with Maroondah one winter’s day By Andrew Woolley A wonderfully sunny winter day saw some good football played at the Yarra Valley Soccer Club. The juniors kicked the day off with the under-13s playing Knox. A lop-sided score line not a fair reflection on the quality of the game. A fantastic second half display resulted in the Valley's only goal, with Riley scoring a penalty. The under-11s had a fantastic game but were just unable to find the back of the net. A good Monbulk side was able to finish their chances and nabbed the three points in mailcommunity.com.au
front of the young Valley stars. The women's team played away against Maroondah and nabbed a 1-1 draw. The girls had the majority of the game and looked to run away with it but were unable to put a few more goals on the board to take all three points. With a forfeit for the senior men's, the reserves were the only senior game Valley had at home this week. A 3-3 score line meant the supporters on the sideline were never bored. Two goals to Finlay Kerridge and Josh Williemsen's first ever goal for the club got Valley the point in a game it probably should have won.
