there were two things that really stood out this week. One was that the town of Eumundi decided to save itself 40 years ago and did it so successfully - with a market - though in reflection towns and cities across the world have been established to provide markets or trading centres for hundreds of years. The other was the story Aunty Judi Wickes told about her grandfather who was granted a certificate of

WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PROGRAM FUNDED FOR ICE ADDICTION

Katie Noonan's Elixir with Michael Leunig.

The Sunshine Coast will be one of 10 regions across Queensland to share in $5.4m state government funding to break the hold of ice and other drugs through the Breakthrough for Families program. Child Safety Minister Di Farmer said drugs were having a huge impact on child safety with almost one in three children coming in to the care of the Department having a parent with a current or previous methamphetamine problem, usually ice. “This drug causes rapid damage within families. Most of the harm is to children under the age of five, and usually happens less than a year after the parent starts using ice,” she said. Apunipima Cape York Health Service, Lives Lived Well, Drug Arm and Bridges Aligned Service Inc will deliver the program which includes individual support sessions with families as well as public workshops, and forums. BURN OFFS IN NOOSA ARE ON THE WAY

NOOSA GETS LIVENED UP Noosa Alive Festival ended on Sunday after 10 glorious days and was hailed a great success with festival director Ian Mackellar saying it surpassed even his own expectations. "There was some real festival magic created this year," he said. Festival president Johanne Wright agreed describing the festival as "a world class event and cause for pride". "I applaud everyone on their combined monumental efforts - I am absolutely thrilled and very grateful to the entire team, to our extraordinary talented performers, to local individuals and businesses who continue to support us," she said. The festival had 16 sold out events and a further four shows selling 90 per cent of tickets. "All the events were popular and of the highest standard," festival publicist Giorgi Ciot said. "We had more firsts than ever before - 14 of them. There was a more diverse offering than usual across all genres and some wonderful surprises such as (the Mad About Theatre musical) Disenchanted produced on our own doorstep. "What this year's festival proved once again is that quality and excellence in

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will be conducting planned burns in the Noosa National Park for two weeks from 30 July. As a result, smoke may be seen around Peregian Springs, Peregian Beach, West Peregian, Marcus Beach, Noosaville and Doonan. The burns are aimed at reducing the volume of forest fuels to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas to help reduce the intensity of potential wildfires. About 10,000 people joined in the Hot 91 Fire in the Sky, more than 5000 wandered through the Maze Art Street Village and a further 8000 flocked to events across the shire. ALL FOR

OTHERS

BY MARGARET MACCOLL or Dr Drew Dwyer a life of caring for others was borne out of the experience of watching his father die of cancer. It led him first to tend to the elderly in a Psychogeriatric hospital in Sydney and later to serve the injured in combat zones before university where now the Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Queensland explores the world of Baby Boomers and supporting people in aged care. Dr Drew Dwyer began his career as a nurse in Sydney then joined the military. It was watching his father die of cancer

"There was a lot of trauma. It was not a nice thing." After his overseas postings he returned to Townsville's military base where he was stationed to the 5th Aviation regiment, in 1996 when 15 Special Air Services (SAS) soldiers and three aviators died when two Black Hawk helicopters collided mid-air during a training exercise. "It was my crew involved," he said. "I was not on staff at the time of the accident. It was a key for me to discharge and move out of the military to find a different career space" Drew turned to nursing in the civilian

system and found it to be very different. He was perplexed by the bullying and harassment he found which he had not experienced in the military where nurses were treated with respect, had a higher skill set and were given autonomy. He said the civilian system found him to be a bit confronting when he spoke out against the treatment of patients and nurses and so, he turned to university with an aim to improve the system through knowledge and leadership. While completing a bachelor degree in applied psychology he studied the culture of nursing and how it operated.

that led him into a caring profession, he said. Once in the army though his work was high pressure in frontline services. He was posted overseas, working in Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and then Cambodia during the time of Pol Pot's totalitarian regime. Imbedded with the United Nations hospital in Cambodia run by German forces Drew was based in the country's capital of Phnom Penh and flew into combat zones on Black Hawk helicopters to treat and rescue the injured civilians and military personnel. "I used to work out in the field," he said.

He undertook a Clinical Fellowship Program and also studied for a Masters Degree at the internationally renowned Joanna Briggs Institute at the University of Adelaide looking at evidence-based nursing and leadership in nursing. He later stepped into a PhD researching evidence-based health care and clinical leadership which has been his specialty ever since, particularly in the area of aged and community care. As an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Queensland in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and Social work he provides support for students and clinicians and conducts research in the areas of nursing science, medical science nursing and gerontology. Drew has harnessed a section of his doctoral work in aged care to support the increasing ageing population and specifically the Baby Boomers, in a book published last year which is aimed to enable people to take control of their own lives

as they age. The book, Ageing in the New Age - A Survival Guide for Baby Boomers is directed as the title suggests at those born between 1945 and 1964 - the Baby Boomers. Drew sees Baby Boomers as a significant sector of the community both because of their numbers and their influence. There are more than six million in Australia and more than 600 million on the planet and they are the creators of modern society, he said. Baby Boomers are a much-studied cohort and are responsible for breaking numerous moulds set by the generations before them. They are the inventors of space travel, modern technology, consumer focused markets and are ever adaptable. Baby Boomers are redefining ageing and the care they demand. They will live longer than the generation before them, have improved medical care, are better educated and better off financially. Drew's book will help them navigate what is available to them in society as they take charge of their

old age. This section of our society will more than likely choose to "age in place" in their own homes or villages and we all need to support this transition to aged independence. In addition to his work with the university Dr Drew is an ambassador for Beyond Blue. Having dealt with his own depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following his military experience, it gives him an insight into the condition which enables him to better help others through counselling and public speaking. Drew's work deals with depression in the elderly in our community nursing homes and raises awareness of the issue in the wider community through his role with Beyond Blue. He encourages people to seek help but also to own their depression and manage their lives to be as normal and positive as they can. "Life has its ups and downs. We are human beings. We are meant to experience

these things," he said. "We have a society built to support people. People should be engaging this system with pride and compassion. Removing stereotypes and stigma on such things as Mental Health and ageing is important now, more than ever." At a recent breakfast meeting in Noosa Drew spoke out about the high incidence of depression among tradies on the Sunshine Coast and presenting himself as a successful person who lives in the space of recovery. "This issue within tradies workforce alone is on the increase and so too is the anxiety and depression being experienced by the large senior's population of the sunshine coast region," he said. "I want to support my local region in providing the best I have in knowledge and best practice to support the transition of our local community. If anything our locals should know and connect with the services here on the coast ... they are the best you can find anywhere." â—?

TEEN CHARGES OVER ASSAULT

Why should Noosa's river be governed differently to any other river in Queensland is a question raised by commercial boat operators after Noosa Council released its draft River Plan for public consultation. Under its draft Noosa River Plan released last month Council is mooting plans to takeover state government responsibilities including the management of anchoring, mooring, commercial uses and jetty leases. Some commercial boat operators have said Council would do better to lobby state government for extra resources to enforce rules already in place. One boat operator said they already paid fees to state government and had long-term lease agreements in place. "The state government has the expertise, the experience and the authority," one operator said. "Why would the council take it on. It would cost the ratepayer. "Why do we need a new set of rules?" Boat operators welcomed the removal of unsightly or sunken boats in the river and said safety was an issue on the river after dark because of a lack of lights on beacons and moorings. There are five state government agencies tasked with managing

Noosa Heads Police have charged two men with assault following an incident in the Bay Village carpark on 1 July. Police said two male victims were walking through the Bay Village rear carpark during the early hours of Sunday 1 July when they were allegedly abused and assaulted by men who were unknown to them. Both victims made assault complaints to police. Extensive investigations by Noosa Heads Police, coupled with assistance from local media and members of the Noosa Community resulted in police identifying two male suspects they believed responsible for this offence. An 18 year old Cootharaba man and an 18 year old Tewantin man have been arrested and charged with one count each of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm in Company. Both have been released on bail and are due to appear in the Noosa Magistrates Court on 14 August. Police continue to seek public assistance. Any persons who may have witnessed this assault or who may have knowledge of same are encouraged to contact Noosa Heads Police on 5440 8111. ●

IS OUR RIVER SO DIFFERENT?

Noosa River. Queensland rivers. They are Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Boat Harbours Team, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol, Water Police, Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the Departments of Natural Resources and Mines, and Agriculture and Fisheries.Noosa Council has been advocating for greater controls over management of the river since 2014. In 2015 a community jury of 24 residents and ratepayers was established and provided 12 recommendations on how Council could better manage anchoring, mooring and

living on the river, commercial use of the river and commercial jetty leases. Council's draft Noosa River Plan lists 40 actions including one to establish a dedicated River Management Unit within Council to coordinate and implement the actions of the River Plan. One operator said it difficult to assess the plan because it was more visionary in design but lacking in statistical evidence, costings, implementation methods and time frames. The draft Noosa River Plan is open for public comment until 24 August. Visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au ●

FRESH IS ALWAYS BEST WHEN THE MEALS ARE ALL ON WHEELS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Tewantin-Noosa Meals on Wheels want their customers to be assured their meals will continue to be cooked fresh daily from their Wallace Park kitchen and delivered to their doors. Chairman Jo Cummingham-Pettet said recent reports Meals on Wheels operations at Maroochydore had outsourced their food preparation to a Brisbane-based company and were reheating frozen meals had resulted in concerns from Noosa clients. "A lot of our clients think it's us but it's not Noosa. Nothing has changed. The food we cook is from all local supplies and the best food," she said. LIVING LITTLE LARGE Sharon and John Rodger were working toward their dream of having a five-bedroom home on acreage property when financial pressures and health issues rearranged their plans. Instead they have found a new way to live by turning their mansion into a tiny house and will share their experience along with academics, business, government and community leaders at a conference on housing solutions on Saturday. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton, who will open the conference, said with affordable housing a crisis in our communities this event was perfectly timed to test run the latest in Tiny Homes, learn about Tiny Home communities, dispel some myths as well as explore the challenges. "Tiny homes are not a new concept, however the modern twist, especially those eco and self-contained models, has excited many across the world and here on the Sunshine Coast. Whether seeking to minimalise, simplify, 'affordalise' or externalise their lives, 'tiny homers' see 'tiny living' as a way to make room in their lives to put time and dollars into other pursuits rather than financing a mortgage," she said. "I am looking forward to listening to the panellists and attendees, and working with everyone on these big 'tiny' concepts."The conference will

hear from 17 speakers and expert panel discussions on living in environmentally sustainable and socially connected communities. Among the speakers will be US academic Gary Flomenhoft who will discuss Community Land Trusts. These non profit corporations develop and manage affordable housing, community gardens, commercial spaces and other community assets on behalf of a community. Particularly good for low income people there are more than 400 Community Land Trusts in the US, UK and Europe. There will be a number of discussions on tiny houses including from Rikki Pieters and Valerie Bares of ESC Consulting. Rikki and Valerie led a successful appeal in 2016 to enable a tiny house on wheels to remain in a Brisbane inner-city suburb and have since worked on developing a Tiny House Planning Resource enabling government regulators and the broader community to explore solutions to housing affordability and density. The Tiny Houses and Eco Villages event will be held from 10am on Saturday 4 August at House with No Steps, Charles Duke Memorial Drive, Doonan. â—?

HOUSE KEEPING TO ORDER The Katie Rose Hospice will this month open 24 hours a day thanks to the outpouring of generosity from the community who have united to create a beautiful place for loved ones as they near the end of their lives. Just a year after taking possession of the Doonan property that was donated for the hospice and with hundreds of thousands of dollars and many hours of time donated by members of the community the facility has been completely renovated, furnished and landscaped. The hospice which has been caring

"It has been a long, busy but at the same time amazing journey for all of us," chairperson Carol Raye said. The hospice is seeking a housekeeper able to volunteer a few hours each week to keep the hospice looking fabulous. For more information visit www. katerosecottage.org.au â—?

LAS VEGAS NIGHTS - AND ALL THAT JAZZ BY JIM FAGAN

The Australian Jazz Ensemble have never been so good, especially for the centrepiece of the Party—four nights of professional jazz starting on Thursday August 30 at the J." Richard is also president of Noosa Heads Jazz Club and, like Noosa Chorale, is a notfor-profit group. "Any profits we make are used to keep classic jazz alive on the Coast and in Noosa in the spirit of jazz festivals around the world. In fact, I would say the Noosa Jazz

Party is unique. It's the only one of its kind in the country, if not the world. "I can hardly believe how it has grown since 1992. This year is going to be sensational." Noosa Chorale and the Australian Jazz Ensemble with singer Juliarna Clark are once again giving a swinging start to the 10-day Noosa Jazz Party with two concerts at the J later this month. And Jazz Party organiser and founder Richard Stevens says, "It will be a winner. This is the fourth year we've welcomed the Chorale to perform with us at The J Theatre in Noosa Junction and I expect packed houses, just like other years The theme this year is "Showtime in Las Vegas" featuring chart-topping songs made famous in the casino town by star singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John and the Righteous Brothers. The Jazz Party is sponsored by Tourism Noosa and Noosa Council. It is now in its 26th year and, if anything, is getting better with age. Richard expects Noosa to jump with world class jazz played by the best musos in Australia. "We've never had so many restaurants and other venues signed up and eager. "All up, we'll have 40 different gigs during the 10 days and that doesn't include the pop-up street bands in places like Sunshine Beach and Tewantin and the free concert at Lions Park in Noosaville. "We're excited, too, by the numbers of jazz fans from inter-state, New Zealand and other overseas countries. Ticket sales

THE LOWDOWN

CERTIFICATE RULES ON ABORIGINALITY It's hard to believe today that Aboriginals in Queensland would apply to the state government to become non-Aboriginal but between 1908 and 1965 more than 4000 did. Aunty Judi Wickes had never heard of Queensland Aboriginals being awarded a Certificate of Exemption until she discovered one in her grandfather's possessions after he passed away. The finding set her on a path of research that she discussed at last Friday's forum at Noosa Parks Association and which will lead in October to the first symposium on the Certificate of Exemption. A Sunshine Coast Elder and a Kalkadoon and Wakka Wakka woman, Aunty Judi said The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 gave the Queensland Government controls over all aspects of the lives of Aboriginals including where they lived, worked, their wages, who they married and, in some cases, whether they could keep their children, until it was repealed in 1965. Aunty Judi told the group her grandfather Roy Smith was taken to Purga mission, near Ipswich, when he was 13 years old in 1914. Her grandmother, Daisy Power, was sent in 1920 to Purga mission when she was aged 19 years. Both had European fathers. Aunty Judi said up to the 1960s children of mixed descent were taken and placed in government institutions "for their own protection". She said the boys were taught to work on farms and the girls were sent out as

domestic servants. Not happy with his treatment and the conditions Roy Smith in 1920 applied to the government for a Certificate of Exemption. It was granted six years later. Aunty Judi said only "half-caste" Aboriginals were allowed to apply for the certificate until 1939 when it was open to all Aboriginals. "People who got an exemption lived in mainstream society and became a nonAboriginal person," she said. "They weren't allowed to mix with Aboriginal people." Roy was by then married to Daisy and they had a child. As Daisy was married to a non-Aboriginal she also became nonAboriginal. Aunty Judi said although the exemption afforded them some privileges it meant they could no longer have contact with their Aboriginal families or friends. They remained under surveillance and lived with the threat of the exemption being revoked, she said. "My mother told me her father said you can't do anything wrong or the government will take you away," she said. Aunty Judi said finding out about the Certificate of Exemption went some way to explaining why her family lived largely in isolation and had lost contact with family. A symposium titled Rethinking and Researching 20th Century Aboriginal Exemption will be held in October at La Trobe University in Victoria. ●

GREENING NOOSA ONE TREE AT A TIME BY MARGARET MACCOLL Seventy volunteers planted about 550 native trees on Sunday morning in an area between Cooloosa Street and Heathland Drive at Sunshine Beach to celebrate National Tree Day. Organiser of the Noosa Bush and Beach Creek Care (NBBCC) group Jill Campbell said the group began working in the area 12 months ago and the improvement in the bushland area had been "just amazing". Jill who has been working for the group for 14 years said they worked across the Noosa Shire with one of their sites a sand island at the mouth of the Noosa River which they can access only between April and September when migratory birds are not present. Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996 and since then 3.5 million volunteers have planted more than 22 million trees. ●

POWERFUL FORCE FOR OUR REEFS SAILS IN BY HOLLIE HARRIS In an historical event, Noosa Main Beach welcomed the mighty M/Y Steve Irwin and Sea Shepherd Crew to the Bay on Tuesday morning. Under the banner of “OPERATION REEF DEFENCE”, Sea Shepherd’s flagship the M/Y Steve Irwin, is traveling up the east coast of Australia to Abbot Point, to oppose the Adani Carmichael coal mine, rail link and coal port. “Our position will be made clear Australia will not trade the Great Barrier Reef with one of the world’s biggest and most destructive coal mines” said a representative of Sea Shepherd. The 59-metre M/Y Steve Irwin was escorted by a public flotilla including Noosa Coastguard. She moored in the bay outside the shark nets as crowds gathered on the beaches in protest of Adani’s new coal mine signing the death certificate for our Great Barrier Reef. Stop Adani and Sea Shepherd have formed an alliance to protect the Great Barrier Reef. Find out what you can do at www.seashepherd.org.au. ●

LAGUNA WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD "By entering these awards, we get the chance to showcase all of our real estate success as well as placing the spotlight on all four offices encompassing 40 staff and 600 property managements to a broader audience." More than 600 people gathered to recognise the nation's leading real estate agents, property managers, auctioneers, innovators and market leaders. REB editor, Tim Neary, said it was one of the most sought-after awards events for the industry. "The interest in this year's awards has been unprecedented, setting new records

across all of the categories," he said. Mr Neary added this year's winners reflected the diversity in the industry. "From national networks to individual agents, the 2018 REB Awards recognised excellence in real estate across the nation, and I'd like to congratulate all winners and finalists on their achievements," he said. Ms Miller congratulated all her staff. "The win was a team effort and reflected Laguna's passion for excellence in real estate," she said. "I would like to say a big, big thank you to each and every one of my team members!" â—?

AUSTRALIA'S top real estate professionals were crowned at the 2018 Real Estate Business Awards in Sydney last month. Among them was Laguna Real Estate's principal Olivier Miller, who accepted the prize for Major Independent of the Year Four or more offices. It's not the first time Laguna has won this prestigious category, being named winners in 2016 alongside their win for Regional Property Manager of the Year. Ms Miller was ecstatic to receive the award. "It is such an honour to be a part of these national awards," she said. "Laguna has been a finalist for the past three years and submitting all of our business achievements is no easy feat with tough competition from around Australia.

LIVE

IS BARKER A PROPHET IN DISGUISE? BY HOLLIE HARRIS ARJ Barker is tired. In his brand new show, We Need To Talk, the 43-year-old American observational/satirical stand-up, says he's tired of the obsessions of living in a modern world and sick of things being the latest and greatest. The highly articulate Barker, now a familiar mainstay of the Australian comedy stage, modulates his 85-minute routine from Zen Buddhist prayer quiet, to Spinal Tap 11 on the 10-scale loud. This American standup comedian has attracted a worldwide following. As a standup he won the coveted Perrier Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and has performed regular sell out seasons at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and Melbourne International noosatoday.com.au

Comedy Festival. He now tours Australia and New Zealand on a regular basis attracting sold out audiences at the largest theatres in the country. He has also performed in Holland, Sweden, Norway, USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand. He has made numerous appearances on late night talk shows? including Letterman and Conan O'Brian shows, as well as his own half hour special on HBO produced by comedy central. Arj also plays 'Dave' on HBO's hit series 'Flight of the Conchords'. Arj has also appeared on Bill Maher's Lasst Comic Standing and Multiple "Just for Laughs" Galas. He's a favourite on Australian TV? having appeared on "Thank God You're Here", "Rove", "Spicks and Specks", "Good News Week", "The 7pm Project", "Talkin

'bout Your Generation", "Have You Been Paying Attention", "The Footy Show" as well as numerous Melbourne International Comedy Festival Galas. So is Arj beaming with success? Well, perhaps beaming is a bit strong, but hopeful? According to the comedian/ philosopher, to live is to suffer, and we should be aware of the direction we're taking with technology, with each other, and with ourselves. Too much exponential choice has rendered us anxious, impatient, and depressed. I get the feeling his tongue in cheek stage character my be onto something. Barker is so clever, he's developed a collection of uplifting, motivational stickers for nearly every occasion — we forgive the charming Barker because he's an absolute optimist, the world is getting better

(so says Barker), and because, ultimately, he is the self-anointed, one true prophet! We'll see. With the recent release of his online musical comedy video, "Disgracebook," he pokes fun at the ways in which we are misusing and abusing social media. It's well worth a look. Though acting is a consideration, Barker seems to enjoy doing standup and travelling, so he continues to tour the world, bringing his original brand of humour. You know you love him. Arj Barker - We Need To Talk takes over The J on Friday 10 August at 7.30pm. Tickets are $49.90 Adult / $46.90 Groups 10+ and available from www. thej.com.au. Do your self a favour and get some. â—?

Love Monster by Amy Shark

Vida on Stan

Love Monster is the highly anticipated debut album from Gold Coast singersongwriter Amy Shark, unsurprisingly full of memorable melodies, lyrical poetry and pop sensibility. The album features Adore, the earworm that brought Shark huge success, a global audience, the #2 spot in triple j's Hottest 100 in 2016 and, more recently, performances on popular US late night shows. Every other track on the long-awaited full-length album shares the potential for that same success. With Shark seemingly unafraid of being vulnerable and exposing it all in her lyrics, Love Monster is full of super-specific storytelling that still seems universally relatable.

In just one episode, new dramedy on Stan, Vida, quickly cements itself as a boiling pot of emotions and story-lines, with the strongest one being an exploration into the tempestuous and binding relationships between families, particularly sisters. Vida, which is airing now on Stan, follows sisters Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn Hernandez (Melissa Barrera) two Mexican-American women who reluctantly return home to the evolving East Los Angeles neighbourhood of their childhood following the sudden death of their mother, Vidalia. Emma is a successful, savvy businesswoman while Lyn is her polar opposite.

The President Is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson

President Bill Clinton and bestselling novelist James Patterson have written a spellbinding thriller, The President is Missing. As the novel opens, a threat looms. Enemies are planning an attack of unprecedented scale on America. Uncertainty and fear grip Washington. There are whispers of cyberterror and espionage and a traitor in the cabinet. The President himself becomes a suspect, and then goes missing. Set in real time, over the course of three days, The President Is Missing is one of the most dramatic thrillers in decades. And it could all really happen...

NOOSA STRADE BIANCHE is a celebration of the 'heroic' age of cycling and steel framed bicycles and has grown from humble beginnings in 2011 to perhaps the premier vintage cycling event in Australia. The event began with a desire to celebrate the 'golden age' of cycling, whilst sharing Noosa and its beautiful hinterland with others. Experiencing the region from the perspective of the saddle of a classic steel-framed bicycle, riding over roads less travelled is a unique concept. In the vein of the famed L'EROICA in Italy, the Noosa Strade Bianche courses have been crafted to incorporate hinterland back roads with large sections of gravel; the 'strade bianche' or 'white road'. As a celebration of the steel framed cycle, NSB encourages the renaissance of the artisan-built steel framed bicycle, taking place across the world. Similarly, gravel riding is also the fastest growing form of cycling. The Eighth edition welcomes vintage cycle enthusiasts from all over South East Queensland as well as interstate and overseas to Noosa on the weekend of 11 - 12 August. NOOSA MARINA, Tewantin, is again the home for this event, hosting the VINTAGE BICYCLE SHOW AND SHINE on Saturday 11 August. The categories being Original Pre-1970. Restored pre1970, Original 1970 to 1990, Restored 1970 to 1990, Neo-retro steel frame 1990 to modern day, People's choice, which is any bike in the show and shine. The past years have seen over 1100

TRY THIS ‌ poetry slam

GO ON - UNLEASH YOUR POETIC VOICE! BY HOLLIE HARRIS IF you love the power of words and music then the second annual official Sunshine Coast Poetry Slam Championships on Thursday, August 9 (from 6pm to 10pm at The J Theatre Noosa) are a must. Featuring award-winning poet Gabriella Salmon, just back from a European tour, this is your chance to perhaps become Australia's next poetry slam champion. Poets will compete for the Sunshine Coast crown with the top two poets going on to Queensland Poetry Festival's poetry slam championships in Brisbane in late August and possibly the Australian Poetry Slam national titles in Sydney in September. The event features sound artistry musician and orator Herb Fenn from Cooloolabin plus teenage singer-songwriter Murray Law from Nambour. These championships are proudly presented by words@play. For the contestants: A free two-hour workshop will be held at the "home" of words@play - the cool Foxy On Coolum Cafe at Beach Road, Coolum - from 2pm to 4pm on the afternoon of the championships, Thursday, August 9. Hosted by Gabriella Salmon, this workshop will help give you the confidence and skills to perfect your championship performance. Gabriella brilliantly hosted our first official Sunshine Coast Poetry Slam

Championships in Coolum in August last year. She also co-hosted our 2017 workshops at Yandina's The Shared and Coolum with 2014 Australian Poetry Slam champion Zohab Zee Khan. These inaugural championships were a part of the Sunshine Coast International Readers and

Writers Festival. Poetry Slam championship rules: The contestants are limited to a maximum of 20 poets of any age or genre. Contestants must be present at The J Theatre Noosa from 6pm to 7pm on the night (August 9)

to sign up for the championships. Best in, best dressed. Only 20 will compete as per Queensland Poetry Festival and Australian Poetry Slam rules. All 20 contestants gain free admission to the championships. Ticket prices otherwise are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Our Sunshine Coast championships are one of 10 heats throughout the length and breadth of Queensland. The top two from these 10 heats contest the State championships and join winners from throughout Australia at the national titles in Sydney in September. The judging: The best part of all is that the audience judges the winners. Five judges are chosen from the audience to rate each performance from 1 to 10. Meanwhile, the audience contributes, not by clapping during a performance, but by clicking their fingers ... the louder the clicks, the better. Each performance over 3 minutes is deducted in points per minute. For the audience: Enjoy an evening of innovative performance poetry - laugh, cry, wonder. Plus the amazing talents of our entertainers Herb Fenn (ever heard a spring sing?) and Murray Law. Be inspired and amazed and come along to support your favourite performance poets and immerse yourself in this healthy, evolving creative Sunshine Coast scene. â—?

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness, Beauty & Learning

SLOW HEALTH - WAY OF THE FUTURE Tai Chi, a branch of Qigong, has been practiced for over 2,000 years. Qigong has an even longer history, dating back about 5,000 years.1 Originating in China, these exercises are said to balance and harness qi (also spelled chi), or "life energy," and is frequently described as meditation in motion, as the activity takes you through a set of slow, gentle movements while you focus on your breath. Just looking at it, it may seem like these exercises do little in terms of exercising your body, but appearances can be deceptive. Research shows Tai Chi and Qigong provide many physical and psychological benefits. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it helps channel qi through your body's energy meridians, thereby improving your overall health and well-being. More specifically, studies have shown Tai Chi stimulates the central nervous system, lowers blood pressure, relieves stress, tones muscles and helps with digestion and waste elimination. Tai Chi may be particularly beneficial for the elderly, thanks to its low impact. You can even do Tai Chi if you're confined to a

wheelchair. Those struggling with chronic pain or stiffness may also benefit a great deal. More often than not, one of the worst things you can do when you're in pain is to stay inactive, as this merely weakens your muscles further, increasing rather than lessening your pain and stiffness. Tai Chi can also take the place of seated meditation if you struggle with the sitting still part. While practicing Tai Chi, your mind is meant to stay focused on your movements, relaxation and deep breathing, while distracting thoughts are ignored. So, what exactly can Tai Chi and Qigong do for your health? According to the scientific evidence, conditions that may benefit from either of these practices include but is not limited to -Hypertension Cardiovascular disease Cancer Arthritic disease Stroke and brain injury rehabilitation Aerobic capacity, strength and coordination Falls and balance disorders Bone mineral density Shingles-related immunity Pain and stiffness

Sleep disturbances and Stress, anxiety and depression Indeed, researchers have suggested that doctors may someday prescribe Tai Chi to elderly patients suffering with multiple chronic diseases. But why wait? You can learn Tai Chi at home from books or DVDs, but joining a class with an experienced

instructor will ensure you're doing the movements correctly and safely. Many areas now offer courses in Tai Chi, so check with your local health club or yoga studio or take advantage of the FREE COMMUNITY QIGONG WORKSHOP every first Saturday of the month from 9-11am in Chaplin Park, Noosaville. ●

Eumundi Markets will celebrate its 40th anniversary next March and from humble beginnings its growth and popularity have been extraordinary. Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre manager Wendy Birrell told guests at last week’s Heritage Walk as part of the Noosa Alive festival how the first market had three stalls, eight attendees and made $30. Last year the markets consisted of 600 stalls and made $1.2 million. There are now four independently run markets in Eumundi, three commercial and one community operated. The markets were begun to try and save the dying town that lost its trade and purpose after the government moved to the east the main the highway and rail line

that had run through what had formerly been an important centre for the timber and dairying industries. Wendy said remnants of the train line still exist with the station building still in its original spot and now part of the markets. The CWA building used to be the place to have a cup of tea while waiting for the train, she said.During peak periods such as Easter the town would become a busy stopover with the garage staying open 24 hours a day for petrol and repairs to cars that had fallen victim to the rough road through Yandina. The Heritage Walk was one of many held during the festival to highlight the area’s rich history. ●

DRAGONS CONQUER THE SAINTS U9 Match report by Pamela CampbellJones The U9 Dragons had an impressive game against the Saints at Peregian Springs on Saturday, delighting family and friends with a strong team game. The U9 boys have been training hard with encouragement and guidance from their coaches, and after working well during the week, the results were plain to see on the field. 72 safe and strong tackles were made during the game, there were runs by all team members with the ball and tries by several try scorers this week. There were players in support all over the field, all game long. The team game was so unified this week, that the Player of the Match was awarded to the entire team. Family, coaches and the Eumundi Dragons Club are super proud of the way the boys played this week. It was a pleasure to watch. Go Dragons! U8 Match Report by Coach Will Vine Eumundi Dragons' under 8's showed that their hard work in training paid off this Saturday with a great game against Saints on Saturday. With the team's confidence and fitness levels at an all time high despite the long school holidays. Each player has now settled into their Forward and Back roles making the games exciting to watch. Forwards, Josh, Jasper and Oaky worked really hard to set up some excellent rucks and mauls with the backs Ted, Jet, Max, Alex and Zimmi all responding by getting the ball to the try line many times. Special mention however, has to go to Oaky Dean for the incredible effort and heart he put into the match with some good tackles, lots of time with the ball and many chances to make a break for the try line. His effort was rewarded with player of the day. With the back end of the season fast approaching I

U7s By Andrew Hillhouse The Eumundi Dragons U7s with the help of a number of U6s met Saint Andrews for the first time this weekend. They faced a highly drilled and organised team that appeared to have an impenetrable defence. Their usual tricky sidestepping did not yield the same results as in previous games. However, some quick hands and creative pasing put Eumundi players George and Billie into space out wide. Meanwhile Zac's runs straight up the middle and on the short side yielded results. Brody, Finn, George and Brooklyn were unrelenting in defence, never giving up to the end. Saint's quick play the ball showed us how to get over the advantage line. Great game by all with Brody getting Eumundie's player of the week. ●

NATIONAL KARATE TITLES SET TO STRIKE AT CALOUNDRA It is that time of the year again when all the serious exponents of karate will assemble for the Annual National Titles and this year they will be contested at the Basket Ball Arena in Caloundra. "The titles will be big for the Queensland," said Brian Dukas owner and head sensei (coach) of the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts. "The state will be hosting the tournament under the guidance of the Australian Karate Federation and all events will be conducted according to World Karate Federation standards; and spectators are welcome." The tournament will be contested over three days starting on 3rd August and go through till Sunday 5. With members coming from all over the country the standard is expected to be very high. Brian Dukas and his selectors have chosen a team of 23 members, all locals, ranging from 8 yr. old juniors, through to senior veterans, 45yrs and up. ''We consider it an honor to represent the Noosa district as part of the state team and therefore, all members have been undergoing a tough training schedule. Because the nationals noosatoday.com.au

are always of such a high standard to win medals will indeed be a great achievement." Under the present system the titles are rotated to a different state each year. Last year it was Victoria this year Queensland; next year Tasmania. "This gives us a great opportunity to promote the sport, and let's not forget that karate has now been included in the Tokyo Olympics: a great boost for our sport." In planning for the future the club now has two major objectives in mind. Following this years national they will be raising funds for the team to contest next years titles in Tasmania. The other is to ensure that all preparations for a visit by Mike Dukes (father of Brian) 8th Dan are under way. The purpose of the visit will be for Sense Mike Dukas to conduct a training seminar similar to the one hosted by the club last year; a seminar that was considered by most to be the best ever. Also during his visit black belt assessments will be conducted under his supervision in preparation for black belt grading in November. To have seminars and assessments conducted by a man of such high grading is indeed a very prestigious event. Such is his reputation that prior to his arrival he will

have conducted similar seminars in West Australia and New Zealand. Further towards a commitment to the community the club recently started selfdefense and safety awareness classes for companies interested in team building and

improving life's skills. It also conducted a training day with a company that works with child protection. "On days such as this we teach people to "Be aware of what is around you." said Dukas. ●

TIGERS TAKE THE STING OUT OF THE HORNETS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers took care of the 6th placed Aspley at Weyba road last weekend on a gorious Saturday afternoon for footy. After a very slow and sluggish start, the Tigers trailed by 5 goals early in the first quarter however from quarter time onwards it was all Noosa. The home side's ball movement and run was far superior with several great options up forward - none more dominant than young ruckman Connor McDonald. The ruckman and forward bagged 7 goals in a standout performance in front of a strong Noosa crowd which featured plenty of past players and a large and boisterous luncheon fraternity who applauded the voice and stories of ex Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann. Gun on-baller Nick Hill was a standout in the centre for Noosa racking up a game high 37 possessions with skipper Aaron Laskey again prominent across half back. Big Jake Stewart presented beautifully across centre half forward to again be among the best with returning goal sneak Sammy Faure booting 4 goals and the clever jai Fitzpatrick 3. Tiger favourite and tough man Peter Trompf showed his usual grit and courage to be among the tigers best in what was a really pleasing and solid win for the home side. A trip down to Brisbane this Saturday to take on cellar dwellers Yeronga as coach Sammy Faure will be hoping to shore up selection and attempt to get some continuity

with personnel as we head towards the business end. Exciting times at 'Tigerland' with our next home game under lights against the Steve Moody coached Caloundra Panthers. Great day had by all at 'Boof ' Lehmann s luncheon and a big thank you to all that helped in putting the show together. Catch you at the footy Go tigers Cheers Pittsy JUNIOR REPORTS Noosa Blue - Under 12 Boys On a beautiful Noosa winters day we took on the competition leaders and the bench mark in the competition, Kawana Eagles. With still a few key players out we leaned on the noosa Red team who gave us 4 players, in which they all didn't disappoint and were very accountable. It was always going to be a challenge and the team stepped up to only go down by 4 points with Kawana kicking a goal late in the last quarter. We dominated the play most of the day and the whole coaching crew were very impressed with how the team conducted themselves and carried out the Noosa Tigers team values. Cooper Delaney once again had a great game and played a real captains game which inspired the rest of the team. Ethan Slaney was outstanding all day especially in the first half. Two wins from three games again last weekend for our Tigerettes as the countdown to finals really starts to shine. The under 17 girls were brave against a much improved Nambour and Hinterland outfit but simply ran out of gas in the final quarter to go down by 10 points. Lauren Vaughan was superb for the Tigers along with skipper India Maddin whilst Charlotte Sipp, Sari Abbot and Chloe Pitts all had an impact on the match. On Sunday it was a top of the table clash in the under 15 girls and after a very even first half, the Noosa girls banged on five second half goals to run out 27 point winners and remain firmly in second place. Mia Woodburn found heaps of the footy to be clearly best on the ground with usual suspects Teesha Fox, Hannah McKenzie and Imogen Van Der Vegt outstanding also. Charlotte Sipp continues her good run of form whilst small forward Ella Reddaway had a terrific game also. Finally it was our under 13 girls who held on to win a two point thriller against the 3rd placed Maroochydore Boomers on the back oval. Poppy Tindal was again superb for the victors with Kaiya Hides, Kate Roberts and Charlie Brown fantastic players also in a really gutsy win. Go tigers ●

Noosa Red - Under 14 Boys Striving for four wins on the trot, the young Noosa Red under 14 team just fell short against top of the ladder Hinterland Glasshouse on Sunday. After a slow start, the Tigers got to within 4 points at half time and upset was on the cards. However the Tigers were never able to hit the lead, eventually going down 4.9.33 to 2.4.16. The entire Noosa backline was great all day, led by Jed Bullman who had a great game. Also in the backline, Cavan Cartwright and Tom Smith played their best games of the year. And again Jack Leary played a great game on the wing. All up it was a great team effort and the boys should be proud of their endeavour.

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

SMOKE ON THE WATER, QUAKE ON LAND BY PHIL JARRATT When I woke up this morning in Bali with the bed shaking and shuddering and the pool looking like a washing machine, the result of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake just across the Lombok Strait, my first thought was: has the world gone mad? Wayne Deane is dead, the Bukit is on fire, the island I love is shaking with rage. It seemed like all the good things I've known in my lifetime of surfing were in a state of upheaval. We'll get to Deaney in a minute, but first the news from Bali. As soon as the aftershocks had subsided, I flipped open my phone and looked for news. The feeds were empty but on Facebook a post from Noosa dawn patrol surfer Bruce Goulding was staring me in the face: "30 second earthquake just hit resort with a few aftershocks still happening. What an adventure." Wow! Good ole Brucey, quick on the trigger. Hope he got the wife and kids to safety before going on social media! I pedalled down the road to check the surf and see if any of the regulars had any info. An untidy two metres of swell was unloading on the reef but it needed a lot more tide. No one knew any more than me. In fact it wasn't until a couple of hours later that news of the devastation near Mataram, the Lombok capital, began to emerge. At least 10 people confirmed dead with dozens of crumbled buildings still to be searched. This came just a week after a huge fire, believed to have been caused by sparks from a welder at a neighbouring construction site, engulfed some 20 buildings at the iconic surfing location of Uluwatu on Bali's arid Bukit peninsula. To my mind, this was a disaster that had been waiting to happen for almost two decades, since the Suhartodriven development push resulted in health, safety and environmental concerns disappearing with every sack full of cash and jerry-built luxury spa hotels popping up on top of each other along a compromised cliffline. Fortunately, no one died in the Blue Point fires, but they were a salutary lesson that this has been allowed to happen for far too long. I've written about it before in this space, so I'll keep it brief, but the Bukit of today makes me almost weep whenever I see the Corona crowd on multiple levels of bars where once were lonely cliffs with skinny cows munching cactus, now a seething, sweating mass moving to the doof-

A Deaney favourite – tucked deep on a perfect unnamed reefie on our 2006 Telos trip. doof, while the hard-baked earth below them groans in despair. Did it have to end like this? Or can it be turned around? There are surfers of passion on the Bukit, and they are already doing good things to restore some sort of balance. I just hope it isn't too late. Meanwhile, perfect huge waves roar down the line through Racetracks towards Padang Padang, and surfers from every part of the world jostle for them, oblivious to the black clouds mushrooming above.

VALE WAYNE DEANE, A TRUE BLUE Sorry Big Wave Bob, I know you don't like obituaries, but you can bugger off to the crossword because I'm going to give Wayne Deane his due. Deaney, who passed away last Friday after a brief struggle with cancer, was an original - a great surfer on any craft you put him on, and a true blue honest bloke with a big heart. Wayne was never one to push himself, but on a great trip in the Telos Islands on the Mangalui Ndulu some years ago, I talked him into doing a long, taped interview over a few evenings as we watched the sun set over the bow, then the MP3 blew up and I could never retrieve the files. Wayne shrugged it off: "It was probably

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

BIG NIGHT FOR LOCAL SURF CLUBS On Friday evening representatives of all the surf life saving clubs on the Sunshine Coast gathered at the Maroochydore club to celebrate the outstanding achievements for the 2017/8 season. The occasion known as the Awards of Excellence was well attended. Under the control of M.C.Craig Law, former president of the Sunshine Beach club, the evening definitely got off to a good start by moving totally away from the stayed old traditional introduction of V.I.Ps. He donned an airline piolets cap and with the total support of his charming, supposedly airline hostess, pointing directions, told us which way to run in case of fire or that mandatory call of nature that would causes us to vacate our seats. The laughter and good humor, in which this new introduction protocol was received, definitely set a great atmosphere to celebrate what has been truly one of the most successful years in the history of the Sunshine Coast. In his opening address to guests branch President John Thorpe said, "With this years outstanding achievements, covering all aspects of our work, the Sunshine Coast Branch must now rate as one of the top, if not the top branches in the state." He also emphasized the outstanding success of the annual Camp Commando. The camp which catered for 130 members of our youth plays a major role in the education of young lifesavers with emphases being placed on the importance of team work. Also the ability to create positive

Athlete Of The Year, Lana Rogers. attitudes towards problems that they may encounter received special attention. This positive attitude training can also carry over into their life away from the beach. Perhaps one of the most pleasing aspects of the presentations was the number of awards that were presented to members of our local clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads. For Sunshine Michelle Smallman was named Volunteer of the Year and Josh Minogue Rookie Coach of the Year. For Michelle this award is well deserved recognition of the incredible workload that she undertook on behalf of her club; and for Josh the achievements of their competitors at Branch, State and Nationals

Michelle Smallman. Titles speak for them-selves. For Noosa Lara Porter won Junior Life Saver of the Year, Barry Leek Official of the Year, Ladies Taplin Relay, Team of the Year and Lana Rogers Athlete of the Year. For Lana this caps off a great year; she won the Australian Open Iron Woman and following this the Open Iron Woman Championship at the recent International carnival in Japan. In what can only be classified as a truly outstanding record of achievement, the most prestigious award for life saving on the Sunshine Coast, the Buhk Wilkes Memorial Trophy was again was won by Marcoola. In the 32 year life of this trophy Marcoola has not only won it an amazing 14 times but

by achieving it again this year, it gives them the unique record of having won the trophy for four consecutive years. In making the presentation Lorraine Buhk (whose family name is on the trophy) reminded all that the Buhk Wilkes is not about surf sport. ''It is about our core business -- Life Saving. Honesty, loyalty, sportsmanship, commitment and comradeship is something that we must never forget," she said. She finished by bring to our attention that "on the evening of the Inaugural presentation, 1986, the winning club was also Marcoola." Sincere words from a great lady whose family is steeped in tradition of the lifesaving movement. â—?

The offshore anglers have been pleased with the smooth conditions of late, offering perfect bar crossing conditions. Barwon Banks certainly provided good catches of snapper, pearl perch, cobia and hussar with most fish taking whole squid, flesh baits and pillies. Closer in on Sunshine Reef and the Jew Sholes, snapper, grass sweetlip and moses perch, were all taken on slimy mackerel, squid and pillies. Up to North reef is seeing moari cod, venus tusk fish, snapper, cobia and jew, best baits have been live yakka's, pillies and squid. Most fish have been taken at first light or late afternoon. There have been quite a few large cobia and jew taken on most of the offshore reefs, these fish are mainly hitting those floater that are fished in a burley trail. Heading way up North, the Reef odd Double Island have been really firing with some big snapper, pearl perch, Sampson fish, red emperor, jew ,cobia and tuskies taken. Cooler mornings in the Noosa River has seen good bream on the chew, with most fish favouring the mouth of the river in the deeper channels. Best baits have been the mullet strips, fowl gut and live yabbies. Trevally have been smashing surface lures like popper and surface walkers around the current line Near Woods Bays. Flathead have been in the lower reaches and taking noosatoday.com.au

small pillies, hardy heads and prawns, soft plastics have also been fantastic on the flatties with pinks, reds and chartreuse all colours that flathead love. Stick to the run out tide to secure the better fish. The Dog beach, frying pan and Gympie Terrace is seeing some good whiting on the run out tide with most fish taking worms and yabbies. Good size Tailor have been in the river mouth as well as some good green backs around Munna Point with most fish taken on the run up and top of the tide. Throwing small metal lures around the 15 to 40 grams with a medium to fast retrieve should see you land a feed. The beaches has been very productive with good size dart around Sunshine and Marcus beaches. The run out tide and the best baits have been beach worms and pipis. Whiting are still about in the gutters just north of the river mouth, with most catches taken on worms in the last half of the run out.Good tailor have come from the Noosa North Shore with the area north of Teewah particularly good! Pilchards on a gang of 3 x 4/0 or 3/0 hooks has secured the fish. The better tides have been the run in. It's been a good week for the jewies with the big fish loving the last of the run in tide. Reports have shown that after dark before moon rise is the prime time, using mullet fillets, whole squid and beach worms has been the key. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
